Solve : hard drives xp/vista?

Answer»

i HAVE THIS SITUATION. I had an older hp desktop that started getting the blue screen of death. Problem seemed to be related to a power supply failure. blue screen appeared approx 20 minutes into start. I then purchased another hp, just vista. I would like to take the xp drive and install it in an open bay on the vista machine. Is this possible or should I purchase a rocketfish HD case to see it and manipulate old files. I would really like to see old resumes. Any concerns or ideas. Any help is welcomeNo reason I can think of that you can't put it in the new machine. If it's just to retrieve data...Click Here...

If you are wanting the new machine to boot to XP it probably won't ...it will be looking for all the old hardware.

However you could do a Repair Install of XP to get it to work...
Best of Luck.Sorry if my reply wasn't clear. I just assumed you would still boot to Vista and only wanted to be able to view data files on the old drive.Thank you all for your COMMENTS. I just want to be able to see and manipulate/print older resumes. Still no problems?

Thanks again! Great process and forum response to a new user.Welcome !

Use the Slave Drive LINK then...

NOTE: If these are SATA drives hook the old one up to SATA3 connector or higher so it won't attempt to boot to it...Yeah it seems most people are forgetting the fact that modern computers use SATA and the older machine may use IDE drive connectors.. well it's pssible to convertors for cheap on ebay if that turns out to be the case..

If there's an operating system still on the "windows" drive and it's in tact, when booting the new machine it will ask what OS you want to use.. even if you tried you cant boot XP as it won't have SATA drivers.. however you can access it and retrive / use your old data.

somebody needs to learn about boot.ini... the boot loader doesn't scan for bootable partitions...new post

I guess I am less experienced than I thought. Latest situation..........

I have an older xp/hp. I have a parallel ide hard disk that I have removed and would like to install in a vista/hp. The new vista pc has an ITA hard disk. I took the ide drive and set the jumpers to slave and installed in the vista machine. I did not want the machine to boot to xp. I wanted it to boot to vista and I hoped to manipulate/recover some files from the XP drive. In multiple attempts, it still attempted to boot to XP. I have removed the XP drive and am back where I started. What should I do know. Should I set the Jumper to cable select? What are the issues I have to do to resolve this problem? Again I just want the PC to boot to vista but would like to see the XP/IDE drive to retrieve files. Any help is welcomeDid you ever watch the Tutorial and read the info in the Slave Drive link provided ? ?
All the info you need is there. Please note, I see your commentary but see no link, I presume you are speaking of a hyperlink.

If yoy are patio mentioned above, how do I see the slave drive link you comment about?look up.SLAVE DRIVE LINK IS OF NO HELP BECAUSE i HAVE ALREADY DONE THIS. As mentioned, The new drive(vista) is a sata drive and has different connectors. However, the ide(xp) drive that I want to be able to see has a spot to connect a parallel cable on the mother board. When I make this connection and start the pc it wants to boot to the xp disk. I want it to boot to vista disk. I have already made the adjustments necessary to the xp disk to make it a slave. This does not work. Something is still letting it be the master. Once I disconnect the cable it will boot to the vista disk. Why does this HAPPEN. Does the sata new disk(vista) have some control here and REQUIRE a conversion kit of some KIND for the IDE drive?

Helpchange the boot order.

Solve : Annoying Vista HD issue.?

okay, why is my harddrive space slowely disapearing. i have disabled system restore thinking that would be the issue. being that the issue has continued, im assuming OTHERWISE. all input is appreciated.

and thank you, i will download the program and see what i find.

Not a good idea.set system restore disk space to its lowest setting
but DO NOT disable itIt's okay to disable system restore for now - the restore points do chew up a lot of disc space. In fact, I strongly urge you (and everyone else) to use a disc imaging utility on a regular basis. It is more efficient and more reliable than system restore and you can then leave system restore disabled.Quote

This is an excellent advice as a long run solution, however...
System restore is not a perfect tool, and in number of cases won't work, or won't help, but there are number of cases, where simply restoring registry to yesterday will cure some stupid mistake, we made today.
As for disk space, with today's hard drive prices, I see no reason to struggle for a free space. Either stop downloading 700 MB movies, or get bigger drive.

We still don't know any details about poster's hard drive: size, free space, TreeSize findings.Quote from: Broni on August 31, 2009, 09:13:38 AM
but there are number of cases, where simply restoring registry to yesterday will cure some stupid mistake, we made today.
Well, I guess I grudgingly agree. And truth be told I keep system restore active for the system partition (only) on all of my SYSTEMS. But it's so buggy that I would only think about trying to use it if all else failed.

I create Acronis True Image images of the system partition on all computers at least once or twice a week. I store them on the second HD on the computers. I also create monthly images to be stored on external HD's.I also agree with Allans approach...
However the real world people in general could care less about backups; regular maintenence and or running regular malware scans and updates...
They would rather ignore all that stuff and then land here wondering why all their data is gone and the machine won't even boot...

If even the casual user would learn to use ERUNT...it backs up periodically automatically so it's not even difficult...(thus system restore is not needed) and grab a good imaging app ( there are even FREE alternatives ) learn to use them and make a regimented schedule then most issues would go away...

I've preached 'til i'm blue in the face and my head hurts that all that's needed is to grab a FREE image app...learn it and run it at least once a month and your troubles are gone......but alas all this falls on deaf ears.

There...i feel much better.
Time for a Pint.
And you know, the funny part is that a backup image is almost a "cureall". It can provide painless recovery from viruses (much better than trying to "disinfect" since you never know if you get it all), user errors, software errors --- pretty much everything except hardware problems. And even then, if that problem causes some form of corruption to the OS it will get you back up in literally no time.I have a slightly different regimen than yours but whatever works...

Once a week:
Update and run all malware scans.
Run diskclean; CCleaner and Auslogics Defrag.
Grab any Windows updates if need be.
Create an image and save it to my image partition.

Then Monthly i take the latest image file and burn it to DVD; date it and put it in the archives vault. Delete all images except the latest and move on...

Even though the above takes 2 - 3 hours late every Sunday evening i have been doing it so long it's just routine....worst case scenario both of my HDD's fail...the external won't run and the machine won't boot at all.
New HDD...restore the latest image and i'm back in business in under 20 minutes...

Works for me.There are a number of HUMOROUS comments that come to mind, but I'm just going to go with: Nice routine

Most work, but the ones that charge alot usually try and do it the safe way instead of forcing itself through. When they force through there are usually files you have to reinstall afterwards.

We have determined it's a hardware issue by the following:

A) It works on another machine
B) It works on the rear ports of the offending machine

patio.what part of doesnt work on the front port is hard to follow? No, oh well just thought if I needed too get one or something. I all ready have one of those attached but thought if need be to use them for something else. Why do you never STOP digging when you find yourself in a hole ? ?

We found out it's a hardware issue...it has nothing to do with you being able to use your front ports or not.

Solve : CPU Issue??

Answer»

Now, let me start by saying I'm not exactly sure how to have a more descriptive title because I'm not exactly sure what my problem is.

First of all, I'm running a 2.4ghz Intel Celeron processor with 760 some odd mbs of ram (give or take for devotion to graphics memory... bios FEATURE) on Windows XP Professional SP3. I'm using this computer because it was a friends and the harddrive went out, so I replaced it with a spare HD of mine and put some extra ram in it.

So I'm working on a fresh format, and even when I had fixed this computer before the HD failed it was horribly slow. I can't even steam videos without them skipping 2-3 seconds at a time. I've had computers with 800 mhz and 512 mbs of ram run much faster. I have all the updated drivers, all my visual themes disabled, and running no processes but the basics.

I understand Celerons have much lower L2 cache than say a Pentium 4 of similar clock speed, and therefore will be much slower to its comparative brand, but I know I should be getting more out of this. I wasn't really sure if there were different drivers for processors, so I went to Intels site and looked up this processor in paticular, and there was only a processor identifcation program for download. So I downloaded this in HOPES of helping diagnose my problem, and it's given me some useful information, and some really annoying information.

Note two things. It has no speedstep technology(so the speed should be somewhat consistant, to rule out this option), and it's running at less than half of its expected speed. The more strain I put on the computer and rerun this test, the lower the frequency is. It doesn't make any sense. This is the only help information it gives me. Quote
Reported frequency - The speed at which the tested processor is currently operating.

Expected frequency - The highest speed at which the tested processor was manufactured to operate.

Small variations in clock frequencies are common. If there appears to be a significant variation, please contact the PC system manufacturer or microprocessor place of purchase.

Now I could be wrong, but I'm assuming that this is my problem. I can't think of anything else. I've never had a computer so slow before. Even while I'm typing this it will freeze for several seconds an then catch up on the text.... Scrolling pages is brutal.

I'd really appreciate some help. Thanks.I would start by re-installing the MBoard chipset drivers first...then any ADDITIONAL drivers that machine needs.
If you are not sure what's in there DLoad install and run Everest Home and run a quick report...this will tell you every component in that machine...

@nd you should check to see if the HDD has possibly dropped into PIO mode...
To do this Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...right click both IDE controllers and see what they are set at...should be "UDMA if available"....
Make the changes and re-boot.
Best of Luck.Quote
Expected Processor Frequency: 2.40 GHz

Note that the ratio of Expected Processor Frequency to Reported Processor Frequency is the same as the ratio of Expected System Bus Frequency to Reported System Bus Frequency. Go into the BIOS settings and see whether you can change System Bus Frequency.

I've experienced this with an ECS motherboard I'm currently using. On a few occasions, the "CPU Frequency", which is a setting in the BIOS for this motherboard, has changed on it's own. I noticed my processor speed being incorrectly reported during startup and also got a lower-than-normal reading if I right-clicked on My Computer and selected Properties. I accessed the BIOS setting screens and SAW the incorrect setting, changed it, restarted and ... back to normal. Also if it has changed on it's own you may want to replace your CMOS battery...part # CR2032 available anywhere.Quote

In addition to the excellent posts above, this part makes me wonder if thermal throttling is the cause.
Pentium 4 processors, including the related Celerons, do throw out a large amount of heat.
I suggest following the CH cleaning guide to remove any dust from the machine, and see if that helps. Even if it doesn't, cleaning should be done regularly so it won't hurt. I mention it because you didn't mention cleaning anywhere, so if you've already done this then disregard it.
Reapplying the thermal paste may be a good idea too, thermal paste can get dried out and become much less effective over time which also leads to cooling issues. If this is a name brand machine, all the more reason to do so as the original paste is most likely very cheap and badly applied (at least, it always has been in my experience). Thanks for all the quick replies. Like I mentioned, I'm unable to find drivers for the chipset. It just gives me the download for the processor identification utility, no drivers.

I checked the IDE channels, the primary is set to "DMA if available" with my only other option being PIO. My secondary was set to PIO but I've changed it to DMA but it doesn't seem to make much difference. They're "Ultra DMA Mode 5" and "Multi-Word DMA mode" respectively.

I've blown the computer out with an air can but that's about it. I don't think it's terribly dirty. It did get hot once right after I reformatted for no apparent reason but after that it's stayed at a normal temperature. This is a laptop by the way, sorry I forgot to mention.

Also, there's no settings for CPU frequency in my BIOS. It's pretty basic.Get Everest Home Here...

Solve : Is my new hard drive failing??

Answer»

I recently purchased a new computer:

Vista Home Premium 64-bit
Core 2 Quad @ 2.83 Ghz
8.00 GB Ram
500 GB Hard DRIVE

I NOTICED as soon as windows was installed and up and running, the system was very slow and sluggish, often unable to complete two things at once...then services would randomly shut down and applications wouldnt open. I tried a disk check but it kept on freezing at the same point (stage 4 of 5) which suggested to me the hard drive was the problem. I've also had a number of problem reports coming up saying an application can't open becuase of the hard drive. I ran SeaTools, and both the Short DST and Long DST failed, as WELL as the Long Generic. Should I presume the hard drive is basically screwed and I should replaced it/send it back?

THANK you

Solve : Vista Dual boot.?

alright, i tried dual booting with vista and XP. but i started with vista, and then installed xp. now i can not access my vista partition. will someone please help me! help is well appreciated!!You really should read the instructions before proceeding.

When the system REBOOTS it won’t bring up a boot menu. Although XP RECOGNISES the Vista partition it doesn’t recognise Vista itself. This is because the Windows XP bootloader gets installed to the MBR, thus overwriting the Vista bootloader and so Vista can no longer boot - the XP bootloader can't be made to recognise Vista.

And here is a cure...

well i got it fixed. actually i found that link right before you posted it. and what i figured was that i was going to run the dual boot and then when i had xp installed i was going to EDIT boot.ini and add another option. which in turn worked. well, it worked partially. (dont feel like going into detail) but even though i had gotten it fixed, your help was still appreciated. thanks again.

Solve : ASUS motherboard?

Answer»

I have an ASUS P5WDH Deluxe. The "User Guide" booklet says that the mobo is designed for a CPU with a 1066 fsb. The ASUS web sight says the board (all modifications) will TAKE a Core 2 Quad Q9550 which has a 1333 fsb. Who is correct? ASUS has not bothered to answer me on this yet (5 days of trying). Anyone know the answer? I'd love to hear from you.I can take a guess... I suspect they're both right, in some respect..

The motherboard might accept a CPU with the 1333 FSB, but the CPU FSB will not run at that max. speed, unless maybe you overclock the board. The board you're talking about will feed a processor either 266.5 MHz or 200 MHz.. If you have your board's bus speed set at 266.5 MHz, a processor's FSB will allow 4 data transfers per each of those cycles (google "quad pumping") giving you "1066" (266.5x4)... If your board's bus is set at 200 MHz, then your processor front side bus will run at "800" (I think there is a VERSION of Pent. 4 with that FSB speed.)

When I checked the board specs., on Newegg they listed 1066/800 FSB speeds..

now say you overclock the board from 266 MHz to 333 then you would get the max. FSB speed (333x4) of that processor of 1333 MT/s (mega transfers) However, I'm not the most familiar person with overclocking so I don't know if you would be able kick the board up from 266 MHz all the way to 333 MHzThanks Blockhead, Your response makes sense. I think I'll try the faster processor because I have successfully overclocked my current Pentium D processor by at least 20%. It did pump the fsb from 800 mhz to 930 mhz. If this WORKS, I'll buy you a BREWSKI!you're welcome

Or as Count Dracula would say, you're Velcome

Solve : Mouse driver problem?

Answer»

I use a laptop, and earlier it was possible to inactivate the touch pad when a mouse was plugged in. But now the touch pad is not inactive when I have a mouse plugged in and that's fatal in games since I accidentally brush up against the touch pad with my left hand from time to time (my touch pad is located to the left from the MIDDLE).
I cannot enter the mouse options from the control panel, so I cannot change the settings back to disabling the touch pad whenever a mouse is plugged in. I checked the device manager for updates for pointing tools, but there were none. The last time I fixed this problem was by doing a system restore, but there has to be an easier way.

Can you help me?you could phycally block it

When I attempt to open the mouse options, I get a MESSAGE saying: "Unable to connect to Synaptics Pointing Device Driver", and then it asks me if I want to uninstall the Synaptics driver. That's all I know.
And I really don't want to have to PHYSICALLY block the touch pad or use an external keyboard.Have you tried updating or uninstall/reinstall the Synaptics mouse in device manager?Yes. The driver is up to date.

Turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in....doesn't always work but you might get LUCKY.

Solve : problem with usb ports?

Answer»

I'm working on Windows XP professional version 2000 SP2. The problem is when ever i try to plug-in a USB device, the OS is crashing and not responding to anything except the manual restart button on the cabinet.

But the PORTS are working all fine without any trouble when i start my PC in Safe mode.

How do i get my USB ports to work without any trouble even when i boot my OS normally? When did this all start? Is every usb device causing this problem? have you tried different devices? If not, what device causes the freeze? If it's a new install, have you installed the chipset driver?it started about 4weeks ago.

the problem is with the ports cos i've tried connecting different USB devices like a card reader, flash drive, camera, etc.

and not a driver installation problemDid anything unusual happen just before the problem appeared (new sw, new hw, virus activity, blue screen error, etc)?So the correct MBoard drivers have been installed ? ?
Just making sure here.are you sure its not being slow?
maybe its just busy installing drivers for the device you pluged inUhhh...this would only happen if in fact it did...the first time. All drivers perfectly installed.. The os is crashing everytime i plug in any usb device and the only way to get the system workin is either to use the reset button on the cabinet or press hold the power button till the system shuts down.. No unusual activity before the problem started..All MOTHER board drivers r installed good.. I've been using my flash drive regularly without any problem.. All of a SUDDEN, one day i start my pc and plug in my drive and the os crashed.. But i can use all my usb ports without any problem if i boot my os in safe mode.. Which is a headache cos most of the applications i use don't work in safe mode..Open msconfig and choose "selective startup" (disable everything) and reboot. Try the usb PORT. What happens?

Solve : Problem rebooting laptop.................?

Please Help

When my laptop has been sitting for at least 15 minutes powered down it starts up no problem loads OPERATING system works great.
If I RESTART, say after installing new software or changing settings or from start menu it shuts down restarts and FREEZES on the "IN TOUCH WITH TOMORROW TOSHIBA" Boot mode screen, unable to do anything. The only way I came shut it down is by holding the power button, then I push the power button again and it starts up and freezes on the same screen.
I have to let it sit powered off for a minimum of 15 minutes before it will start properly again.
Any idea as to why this is happening? Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Video card upgrade question for Toshiba laptop?

Answer»

which is mainly about the only thing that can be USED. Also any cards as well.Their are some laptops that the video card can be UPGRADED. I know because I had one and upgraded it. But the options for upgrading my video card were very limiting. In other words it really wasn't much of an upgrade. In my case, it was a matter of replacing a dead video card, I got the better card because it was the same price.

A NEW video card for a laptop is NOT cheap. Over $350 for mine. I would follow the advice given and invest in a desktop. Laptop just aren't made for gaming. Sure, you can buy high end laptops that will PERFORM ok, but at a much higher cost than a desktop. are you sure about exchanging PROCESSORS?if they are the same socket and same type, like intel, yes

Solve : No sound external Jack?

Answer»

After adding new hard drive and installing XP PRO my external jacks for sound (SPEAKERS) and MICROPHONE do not work I went to the devise manager and downloaded all new drivers for everything , checked the set up and everything apears OK ?
help
Please!
HubertIs this jack part of the MB or is on it's own card?

Either way..

Go to your control panel, then you go to hardware and sound. In the hardware and sound, you will see this thing that says sound. Click sound, and a little screen will pop-up, double click speakers, then another little screen will pop-up. On the first tab, it'll SAY controller information, then whatever it is, next to it (on the right side) there will be a button that says properties. Click on that, and another screen will pop up, click on the little tab that says driver, and you will see all these options, click on update driver, and maybe it'll work.

If there is no options, it's because something is wrong with your driver. You will need to reinstall the driver for this sound card/mb.

Thank you I will try that

Solve : Computer has power, power button pressed nothing happens...?

Answer»

Hi All.. I have a computer that is acting up..
Here is the story..
Power is supplied to computer tower, i can see the orange led on the case on and once i press the fire the computer up, I hear the fans and the hard drive taking off but the led STAYS orange and nothing happens on the screen.. After unplugging and re-plugging the power again several times.. I press the orange led power button and computer fires up and the led turns green once it turns green the boot up starts and i see everything on the screen post BIOS messages and etc,.. and everything is booting and working as it should..

It happens EVERY time i start up the pc.. Gets frustrating now.. Any Ideas??
I think its the power supply but we changed it and this is the second one still same thing..

Specs:
Mobo: PC Chips M955G V3.0A
Processor: P4 Single Core. 2.87ghz
Ram: 1GB
Video Card: On Board
Power Supply: 375 watt..If you haven't tested the RAM, now might be a good time. Memtest http://www.memtest.org/ or a Ubuntu linux distro iso which comes with a memtest option.this sounds a bit familiar
similar to what happend to my OLD CompaqITs not the RAM, we replaced with new ram sticks and same thing happens.. Can it be the power supply?? I read somewhere if the power supply doesn't receive a PWR_OK signal it wont start up.. Have you double checked that all of the cables and cards inside the tower are secure and that none of them have become loose?

Remove each one and physically reseat it to make sure.It appeared to be a faulty motherboard.. I replaced with an ASUS mobo and works like a CHARM under the same PSU.. Tnx for all the help...

Any error messages? Does it just freeze?Try it in a different machine...I am having the same problem. I am trying to install a 1TB SATA hitachi drive in a desktop. I have an existing IDE drive configured as Master 1 and a CD drive as Slave 1. I have enabled the SATA controller on the motherboard and when I plug in the cables for the SATA drive, the device manager says that the SCSI/RAID controller has a problem. I don't want a RAID array. I just want the 1TB SATA drive to expand capacity. Can I have both a SATA drive and an IDE drive in the same machine or do I need to disable one? I have the SATA drive set in BIOS as IDE not RAID. Thanks.I'm not experienced like patio but I'd like to KNOW the solution and maybe can help.

OK so that's an improvement over "can't be detected, correct?
So now go to 'My Computer > select that drive, then right click on the drive icon, then select 'Properties". Post what you find there.
or
Go to 'Control Panel' > click 'System' icon > click 'Hardware' tab > click 'Device Manager' > double click the entry 'Disk Drives' > double click the drive listed in question here. That will bring you to the settings tab for that drive which list 'Device Status'.
What does it say in that 'Device Status' box?So now go to 'My Computer > select that drive, then right click on the drive icon, then select 'Properties". Post what you find there.

normal start-up > My Computer > right click hard drive icon > Properties > Tools tab > in the box labled "Error Checking" click "Check Now" > check both options boxes then click "Start".

I have the Canan ip4200 Printer and one of thier Flat Bed Scanners.

Now I have my Printer and Scanner setup so that I just turn on my Printer and hit the Copy Button on the scanner and when it scanns the item it automacitly prints it out.

And it works greate.

But when I hit the Copy Button on my scanner a window comes up asking me what program do I want to scan with
Scan Gear Tool Box
Photobass

And I have to click on Scangear Toolbox and it scanns it and sends it to the printer and prints it out.

What I need help with it useto just Automaticly Pic ScanGear Toolbox to scann with and then send it to the printer.

I remember there was a way I could bring up a window and Un Check Photobass and just leave ScanGear Toolbox Checked.

And then it would just use ScanGear Tool box when I hit the Copy Button on the Scanner.

I am GOING nuts here please help SOS
ThanksDid you look in the manual?
What model scanner?n676u is my scanner

And it has no Booklet but I never looked this up anyway.

I remember it was in the Properties of Printer or ScanGear Toolbox os something.
And I am going in and out of everything and can't find it.this is the correct manual for ScanGear with that model scanner. Try chapter 6. Maybe PAGE 73 or 76. That's all I can find and I'm not FAMILIAR with that scanner or software. Maybe Scangear issues can be better answered in the software section?

Now itt goes from the BIOS screen to a screen which says Windows not shut down properly and GIVES several options on loading Windows. When I select ONE of the options it goes back to the bios screen and so on.it sounds like you changes the motherbaord without reinstalling windows
you need to do a reinstall
or it will load drivers for the old motherboard and will not bootBoot to your XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option and perform a Repair InstallRepair Install of XP

Done properly all your apps and data will remain intact...

Done improperly all your stuff will be gone but you will have a fresh install of XP...

Solve : Dell Dimension 9150 Booting problem - HELP!?

Answer»

Not sure if this is the right area to put this but new to this forum.

I recently bought a second hand Dell Dimension 9150 (not even two WEEKS ago). It all seemed to be working fine and not had any problems. Tonight I turned it off as normal but when I went to turn it on an hour or so later, it kept making a weird BUZZING/"burr" sound repeatedly. Nothing was showing up on the monitor even though it was on. Most of the lights turned on as normal and flashed to indicate they were working but some of the other lights are staying on. These are numbers 1 and 3, or 3 and 4.

I checked the official Dell website on another computer and I kept getting lights 3 and 4 stuck on at first but now it seems to be lights 1 and 3. Both of which are APPARENTLY memory problems according to their site.

I did manage to turn it on once but it shut itself off after a few minutes use. It also seems to fail as it starts up as when I push the power button it goes to start, stops for a few second and then goes which it never used to.
I'm not a very technical person so I don't understand why the memory suddely has problems or what I could do to solve it??

Any help would be greatly appreciated Quote from: danboy34 on August 29, 2009, 02:08:14 PM

If you have two or more memory modules installed, power down and take precautions concerning grounding yourself to the case before touching any internal components, REMOVE the modules, reinstall one module, and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, power down and take precautions concerning grounding yourself to the case before touching any internal component, then reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.
Did I mention be sure to disconnect power and take precautions concerning grounding yourself to the case before touching any internal component?

Solve : ATI Tool Overclocking Help?

Answer»

Hi all,

Just before I head down to my nearest computer parts store for either a new CPU/GPU, I've decided to see how my current CPU/GPU could overclock before the new parts are bought.

Therefore, I had opened up ATI Tool (0.26) and checked the temperatures -

Idle

 • Core Temp - 32 C
 • Chip Temp - 34 C

The default clock speeds seem interesting:

2D

 • Core - 275 MHz
 • Memory - 1200 MHz

3D Low
 • Core - 450 MHz
 • Memory - 1600 MHz

3D Perf.
 • Core - 500 MHz
 • Memory - 1600 MHz

I don't know if these are normal clock speeds, however I researched and found all mention of my card's clockspeeds to be:

 • Core - 550 MHz
 • Memory - 1700 MHz

I am not sure if that means that all of 2D/3D low/3D Perf. are running at that speed.

So I had gone to try the "Find Max Core" to see how it clocked.

First it had started from 278 MHz for all (2D/3D low/3D Perf.), then 280 MHz, (heatup phase 1), then 300 MHz,
then 310 MHz, (heat up phase 2), and so on until it was at 575 MHz that the temperatures had gotten to about 60+ degrees Celcius, that I got worried and aborted the test.

I was about the CHECK something else on my computer when Windows suddenly froze.

So I had to reboot and research some more.

And here is my question:

What clockspeeds are optimal for this card? (Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX 512) [Maybe albeit less performance than max so it doesn't run at 60+ Celcius all the time]

60c is fine. Just dont let it get above 90. Also, run 3dmark after every increase and look for artifiacts. When you see artifacts then take each one down by 10-15.525 to 550
it should be safe at that
but if its freezeing that means is unstable and clock it downThanks.

What would be a good setting for the memory clockspeeds?WSR - smeezekitty is wrong, please ignore him.
The "optimal" or maximum clock speeds of a card are not something you can be told, you have to find them for yourself.
Automatic overclocking options, such as the "find max" on ATITool are not a good idea, because what is stable in one program may not be stable in another, as you've seen.
When overclocking a video card, I use ATITool's 3D view and use the check for artifacts tool. Run it for 5 minutes or so, then increase a clock speed by, say, 10MHz. Run it again for 5 minutes. If the temperature goes too high, or you see any visual artifacts, back off 5-10MHz and try again for 10 minutes. If it's OK, raise it further, rinse and REPEAT until you can't go any higher. Then try raising the other clock speed. You may have to find a balance - sometimes lowering the core from its maximum overclock means you can raise the memory a bit more, but you'll have to experiment to see what gives you the best performance. After you've found your maximum stable speeds with ATITool, it's a good idea to test again with other graphically intensive programs, such as 3DMark or an actual game. Again, any instability or graphical glitches and you'll need to clock back a bit and try again.
The core speed will have more of an impact on performance than the memory speed. The core speed will raise the temperature you can measure, memory speed will raise the memory temperature but you can't usually measure that. I'd recommend clocking the core up first, then memory.
The core temperature is fine up to 90C or more, so it's not often you'll have to worry about temperatures - more than likely, your card will top out on clock speeds before you get that high, unless your cooling is very bad.

3D perf is the only clock speed you should need to change.

I hope this helps.i googled it and it seems to be underclocked
thtas all i tried to stateQuote from: smeezekitty on August 27, 2009, 11:37:49 AM
i googled it and it seems to be underclocked
thtas all i tried to state
I apologize if that's what you meant, but it wasn't what you said. Thanks Calum,

I'll try to find a stable clock by your advice.Okay, I tried the first "Scan artifacts" phase, the card seemed normal, until about 4min 20-40 seconds, that the temp of the GPU core was reported as -190 Celcius,

The chip temp said 53 Celcius.

I stopped the tool after it reached 5 min, and the GPU temp came back to normal, 63 Celcius.

Should I continue, even from this abnormality?Sounds just like a brief sensor malfunction.
If your chip overheats you'll know, there will be graphical glitches or the system will freeze. Monitoring the temps is only to see how close you are to the maximum temperature, if you reach it there shouldn't be a problem as the thermal protection should protect the card from damage.
What program are you using to monitor temperatures?Oh, a sensor malfunction.
It got me worried there, I thought there was almost LIQUID nitrogen touching the card.

I've been using ATITool's temp reports + Speedfan (although there seems to be a 6-7 degree Celcius difference between the two).

I may check RealTemp's report once I have downloaded it.

I forgot to mention my CPU is an Intel Pentium D 805, so I think RealTemp will not be compatible with it.RealTemp won't work with a Pentium D, no. Either Speedfan or ATITool should be fine to measure temps, but personally I use Rivatuner. It's a little more complex to set up, but I find it's better to monitor graphics card temperatures. If you're happy with the programs you're using there's no real reason to switch though.Okay, So I've so far gotten a stable 550 Mhz Core and 1640 Mhz Memory clock @:

63 (ATITool)/67 (GPU-Z)/73 (Speedfan) Celcius. (67 Average Celcius).

According to specifications for my card, this seems to be levels close to the RATED clockspeeds.

I think there may be more potential left from these figures.

I tested its game performance using Race Driver Grid (bought in '08!), at Medium settings, no AA, only in menu so far...

GPU-Z is most likely to be correct from those figures, but whichever is right you're well within spec so no worries there.
Good to hear the overclock is working out for you so far.

If it was the original one your computer came with then you should be able to just look up your computer model online and then search for a driver LIST for it.

If worst comes to worst, just post your MAKE and model here and I'll find it for you.

Another question is are the "barebone kits" on tigerdirect worth it for a beginner to make sure I am getting compatible components?
The barebones kits are only worth it if they have what you want or better for cheaper. Usually, that is not the case.Quote from: Aardobard on August 09, 2009, 12:29:12 AM

This build is $5 over budget. You can drop down to a slightly smaller HDD to get it under budget if you must. Please note that it DOES NOT include a DVD/Optical drive as you can likely recycle that from your EXISTING machine. It DOES include a 19" LCD monitor so you do not have to squint =) . The components have overclocking potential, if you get the urge, and the video card, while not latest tech, will drive this monitor to all but the highest settings on current GAMES.
[Formerly Big Red Box]

But in case this goes badly again, here's a text list:
CPU E6300 $84
MOBO Gigabyte EP45-UD3L $100
RAM GSkill 2x2Gb 1066MHz F2-8500CL5D-4GBPK $55
HDD WD 750GB Green $60
GPU XFX 9800GT 512 $96
Case + PSU Antec 300 + 430WPSU combo $100
MONITOR ACER X192Wb 19" $110

What is the best area to cut some cost out of the build as my budget has been downsized a bit? Obviously I could forgo the new monitor for the time being but where else? You could drop to an intel e5200, they run about $50 and you won't see much difference (plus they OC like cheetos crunch!) You could go with a smaller HDD, the 320Gb go for about $50. The last place I'd rob from would be the GPU. You can get a decent one for $50-60 but that's the place you are most likely to see a significant difference.

So wth these changes + dropping the monitor you are looking at about $200 in savings. At that price point an AMD build or even a prebuilt might give you a better value. I have been doing some research over the last few weeks and here is the build I have initially decided on. Let me know what you think. Thanks

If your going to be doing hardcore gamming then you will need to get a decent graphics card which should only be another $100 or so.

Solve : Speaker static/crackling when windows loads?

Answer»

A few days ago, my right speaker suddenly started producing this static/crackling noise. First, I checked all my wire connections and MUTED the microphone/aux volume in the sound mixer with no effect. Then I tested the speakers on my other computer and found that they worked perfectly (my speakers still function on my computer, albeit with the annoying static popping throughout).

I scanned for viruses and spyware, reinstalled all the drivers (sound blaster live 24 bit), and tried system restore all with no effect. I think I've ruled out environmental factors such as wiring and interference from cell phones/monitors.

Perhaps the most notable part was that the speaker only starts to make the noise when windows loads... and they work perfectly in safe mode. I killed all unnecessary services/programs and still have the problem. I also searched this site and read that a wireless router signal could disrupt the speakers, but my right speaker still spits out static with the wireless router powered down. I'm crazy stuck... if anybody has any suggestions I'd really appreciate the help

Speakers: Logitech X-230
OS: XPYou may just be getting some electrical noise from the CPU during start-up.

How old are the speakers and your CPU?both the speakers and the cpu are around 4 years old, and I've never had this type of problem with them before. I'm not sure what electrical noise is, but the static always starts at the exact same time, when windows is loading (around the 9th or 10th load bar they make a POP and then start crackling away).Just for refrence, Electrical Noise is the excess electrical signals a circuit gives off that travels thru the wires.

During boot up, the CPU, RAM, and especially the Hard DRIVE give off Electrical Noise this then finds its way out to your speakers thru your sound card, fortunately electrical noise isn't that bad and doesn't do any damage. If it gives you more problems(like no sound at all) you should consider getting your sound card checked.Quote from: alarune on August 28, 2009, 07:50:11 PM

You might check the power SUPPLY wiring to your optical drive(s), hard drive (s), external drive(s), ect. (anything that reacts differently or not at all in safe mode).

i agree sounds like eletrical noise
but it maybe picking up extra eletrical noise because the
sound card is going out? (maybe)I've had this set up for a few months now, and haven't had any problems before a few days ago. If it was electrical noise, would there be a way to fix it? and also, how would i fix the power supply wiring? just move it away from the audio cable?

THANKS again guys, this is really frustrating...Quote from: alarune on August 28, 2009, 09:10:02 PM

The power supplied to the components from the Power Supply Unit will be on the inside of the case. Are you familiar with working inside the case (power cord disconnected, your body grounded to the metal chassis before touching anything inside, ect}?Possible breakthrough! When I plug headphones into the front of my computer (headphone jack), the speaker static stops completely. Also, if I play music, the speakers AND headphones will output audio without static on either one. I tried plugging the speakers themselves into the headphone jack, and again, no static!

Any ideas on why the speakers sound fine in the headphone jack, but not their intended jack in the back of the pc? It's like the speakers want something plugged into the headphone jack or to be plugged in there themselves... I appreciate the suggestions about power supply, but i think it has to do with the headphone jack somehow.

I guess it's also worth mentioning that my speakers have a built in headphone jack. When headphones are plugged in here, the speakers do not output audio (but also don't produce static).Quote from: alarune on August 29, 2009, 08:48:22 AM

Sounds like the sound card's filtering circuit was going out, and the headphon jack's filtering circuit is fine, you would've been able to fix the sound card with some really intense soldering, but I wounldn't mess with it.Quote from: alarune on August 29, 2009, 08:48:22 AM

Is this an integrated sound card or add-in card?

If your lucky your problem is caused by dust/dirt ect collected in the speaker output jack. You could try blowing the crap out with compressed air in a can.

Speaking of blowing out dust, how long since you removed the cover and blew out the dust on the inside of the machine?

If this doesn't help (if it's an add-in card) you can try RESEATING the sound card in it's socket.

Or, next step is sound card replacement.

Solve : wandering touchpad mouse cursor?

Answer»

I have a Dell Latitude laptop with a touchpad mouse. From time to time on and off the CURSOR wont stay where I move it. It just wanders away close by but just far enough off the item or button that I want to select. So then it becomes a two handed operation. One to hold the mouse in place and the other to hit the select key. What a pain in the xxxx. Than the thing starts to work ok for awhile. I thought it had something to do with static electricity but havnt been able to prove anything yet. Ive tried washing my hands even putting a little cream on them but nothing works. Then all the sudden its ok again.
Any THOUGHTS would be appreciated. Cant use a plug in mouse because I spend a lot of time computing from a CHAIR where I dont have room for a pad or a good surface. Oh yeah it also has a toggle stick which works fine all the time even when the touch pad is acting up.they all do that
it maybe humidity
try licking your FINGERS before use
or tapping it fairly hard a couple of times
that usuly GETS it working

Solve : Video Card Malfunctioning or something else??

Answer» Summary
I think my video card is broken. Whenever I try to PLAY resource intensive games, my computer restarts after like 30 minutes of playing. I've already tried a bunch of things. I've already checked if a bunch of other things are broken. And it seems like my video card an ATI 9600 XT is starting to die. Oh, my computer, including the video card, works fine as long as I'm not playing a game.

Extended Version

Let me start from the beginning...

It all started a few weeks ago, I decided to start playing the SIMS 2 again. This was after a long break from playing computer games, spanning about 3-4 months, I don't exactly remember. Well everything ran normally for about half an hour then my computer restarted. Like it just shut-off. I tried playing again, and again my computer restarted. So then I decided that I'd try to ignore it and just save more frequently. So for about a week I'd be playing the Sims and save every 5 minutes, waiting for the inevidable restart to occur. Sometimes it'd take 5 minutes to happen; sometimes 2 hours. So then, since I hadn't played computer games, or done anything that would even remotely strain my video card, for about 3-4 months, I have no idea when the problem actually started.

Here's a run down of what I tried doing...

I thought there might be a software conflict or something like that, so I went on a rampage uninstalling any program that I didn't use regularly. That helped a little bit, and I stress little, more or less I'm just being wishful.

I tried reinstalling/updating the video card drivers. Nada.

I thought that my RAM might be broken, I had them switched. No improvement.

I thought that my computer as a whole might be over heating, so borrowed a few fans from a friend just to see if they'd help. Yea, they didn't.

So finally, I'm left with the thought that my video card might be broken. This actually kind of makes me sad, but oh well. My computer has an onboard video chip thing, that only turns on when the motherboard doesn't detect a video card. So I decided to try that out, I had it run the Sims 2 for half an hour NOTHING happened. No crashing (surprising because this was a SiS chip that supposedly didn't support the game), no restarts. Of course, it might be helpful to mention that the game was practically unplayable.

My Computer Specs:
OS: Windows XP Home Edition SP2
CPU: 2.4 GHZ Pentium 4
MB: Uses a 651 SiS chipset
RAM: 1024 mb, same speed, same maker.
Video Card: ATI 9600 XT, made by Gigabyte
2 Hard-Drives totalling 210 GB
A TV tuner
DVD burner

Oh yea, within the last 6 months, I have added a DVD burner, TV tuner and an other hard drive.

Error Message

It's the same every time:

My computer is a Powerspec 8821. I checked the website, and there's nothing there about the PSU. Does Everest show any info on the PSU? I'll have to ask my dad about seeing if we can get a bigger PSU, what would be a good wattage? 400? 500?

I think the sensor on my motherboard is broken, it keeps randomly jumping from 30 C to 70 C :-? . But my video card seems to hold steady at 30C - 40C. I updated my Direct X like a couple DAYS ago.
Quote

It probably would be best to just look in there and read what is on it. It may have to be unscrewed (4 screws) to get a good look at the casing, especially if it is printed on the top.

A name brand quality power supply is best. Think Antec and Newegg, about $50. With a cheap one you never know, and if you have expensive components to ruin, this is not the time to be saving a few dollars.

Ummm... yea, I think it's a bit low. Apparently it's only 250 W, I thought that it was 300 W at least. So, could this be the root of the problem? If so, how many watts should the next PSU be? Also you said Antec was a good brand, and others?

Quote
Wow!!! Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Yea, that's why we just assumed the motherboard sensor was broken. I put my hand near the CPU when it was supposedly running at 70 C, and it seemed normal.
250 w is definitely not enough! 400 from a quality maker would be sufficient. What motherboard is in there? Everest should tell you as well.

FIC VI-39L which uses a SiS 651 Chipset. Oh and it's form factor is micro ATX.]

About those PSUs, are all PSU's a standard size or do I have to check the size on whatever I'm going to get? I measured my current PSU and it's 5.75"x5.5".

Thanks for all the help so far. If you have an ATX case, then an ATX power supply will fit and work with the right motherboard connectors. Those will all work.Alright, thanks! I'm going to get the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817103935 . If that doesn't fix the problem, at least I won't have to worry about energy consupmtion anymore, plus I'll have a spare PSU for a internet and word-processing computer. Post back and let us know the outcome. So yea, minor problem.

The new PSU installed pretty easily, my case is a bit small so it's little bit cluttered now, not a problem. But there's one little issues, the computer shuts down 30 seconds after logging into a Windows User Profile. It boots fine loads Windows, but in under a minute after logging in bam it shuts down. Would misconnected wires cause this or something else?Onboard sensors aren't the most accurate devices in the world in general but a jump of that magnitude coupled with a crash is a little coincidental don't you think?
Blow a room fan into the open case and see if that improves things. If it does, start looking at fans and heatsink assembly etc. Heatsink compound does lose it's heat transfer efficiency over time!Quote

My dad thought of that and so we blasted it with a couple extra fans, one at the CPU and one at the video card. No effect. :-/

Oh, adding on to my last comment... I decided to unplug everything nonessential out of the computer, it also turned out the at CPU heatsink wasn't fully clipped in, I don't think that was a big deal. The computer's running fine with the new PSU, but I'm not sure what the problem was, so I'm afraid of putting everything back in.
[edit]
Edit, I think my video card is dead. I'm going to test it in our other computer. Great... thank god this computer has onboard video. [/edit]

[edit]Edit #2: I decided to try out the DVI port, and the video card is working now. Wierd. Computers are so wierd.[/edit]No having it seated properly would do make it shut down. It does not take much. As long as you clipped it down and it is working now, you should be fine to hook everything back up. Just to be safe add one thing at a time and test it until you add all the devices back.
I have the same board in a powerspec 8921. it is a good board and should last a bit longer. I am finding it hard to find a good video card to run in it that will prolong the life of this machine. The post is 3 1/2 years old...

Immediately after you press "F2" to continue, begin rapidly tapping the F8 key twice per second or faster until you see the "Windows Advanced Options" menu. Safe Mode. Use the F8 function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the F8 key once or twice per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its PROCESSING bar display).

When the Windows Advanced Options menu comes up, use the up/down arrow keys to select "Safe Mode". Hit the Enter key.

Boot to safe mode. Do you have the same problem?

ADG: Well, there you go... He still has a problem in Safe Mode (I think, although I'm not sure it's the same problem - little bit of a communication problem).

never13more:
If your system clock won't keep correct time, you probably need to replace the CMOS battery on the motherboard.

I don't know exactly what "Alt = will go log off -_-" means, but I'm going to leave you now to run some errands.

I don't currently have any good ideas REGARDING your "keyboard". My intended contribution was to get you into "Safe Mode" and that small contribution has been completed.

--dahlarbear1. System Clock. You should correct your system clock setting. You'll probably have to replace the CMOS battery before it will maintain its setting.

Prompt to press F1/F2 each time computer boots
Time and date GETTING reset and/or losing time
How to replace the CMOS battery

2. Keyboard. You should check all of your keys, with or WITHOUT SHIFT key held down. There are other key combinations, but probably too tedious to check all. Have you discovered any other "key" or "key sequence" other than the "ALT" key which doesn't APPEAR to be mapped to the correct action?

3. ALT Key. Are you saying it's different in "normal" and "safe mode" boot?
a. Normal boot: "when i press it , it will go sleep and then open again".
b. Safe Mode boot: "Alt = will go log off".

What are you expecting the "ALT" key to do?Im expecting using alt tabs and some computer game purposes.
and while im in ragnarok and putting some skills on the button of f5
it will go print screen I wonder why.. hmm?Have you tried another keyboard ?Sorry - forgot all about this thread. Yes - same question as above - what happens with a different keyboard?

I take it that graphics is not integrated then.
Does it have integrated graphics?
Reason I ask is I'm thinking maybe resetting the BIOS by removing the battery changed the graphics output back to default/integrated/factory. Now if you still have your monitor plugged in to the add-in graphics card - it's not getting a signal. If this is the case, try plugging the monitor into the integrated graphics just to get it back up and running.
Reseat your ram,....make sure all connectors from front panel are attached to motherboard header pins what??? This is a dell unless he changed it that I doubt there fine. since this is a dell there will be a LIGHT code on the back wich can be used to figure out what is wrong.

Solve : Transferring my C drive to a larger hard disk?

In my Sony VAIO desktop The 180 gig C drive only has 10 gigs left, not even enough to work with anymore and I have purchased a one TB drive which I want to use as my C drive. I am running XP.
Presently both drive bays are full, the single partition C drive and a second drive partitioned into D,E,F,G which has my picture and music files, etc. ..I also have a USB external disk drive onto which I have cloned my C drive with Ghost.

Which of the following should I do: take out my D>>> drive and run the new one as a slave and clone the C drive to it and then exchange with the present C drive. I realize that I have to run the new drive in slave mode and then MAKE it the master.

After reconnecting my D>>? drive will the drive letters automatically come up in the old order?

Secondly, I could clone the new drive from my external one, but I just don't quite KNOW how, would I have to reassign drive C to the external and run it as a master, how could I do that without SWITCHING connections around physically especially with no access to the internal parts of the drive?

Sorry for the length of this post.

...OttA: if 10 gb is not enough to work with i dont know is
B: do you want to boot from an external drive?? thats not possable
C: why dont you just copy whats on you D drive to the new drive and install it there
D: your post doesnt make alot of snesIf it makes you feel any better, I understand your post just fine, although I'd rather a more experienced member of this board give you correct directions.
But I would think using Norton Gohst will be fine, letting your PC assign whatever drive letter to the drive, then after all is done and you remove the old drive you can then use Disk Management to assign the drive letter C to your new drive.
But as I said, wait for a more experienced member to confirm this.
Have fun. Why I said that 10 gigs are not enough to work with is that I wanted to defrag the disk and the error message said there was not enough memory on the disk for defragmentation.

Solve : Power Supply Suggestions?

Answer»

I'm in the market for a new ATX power supply since I'm buying a PNY-GTX 260 video card.
Here's my specs...

- AMD Phenom 9550 Quad-Core Processor
- 2GBs of RAM
- 500GB Harddrive
- ATX550W Power Supply (Rhycom) (current)
- Windows XP Professional - 32bit

I'm looking to spend around $100. The card requires a 550watts PS and 2 x 6-pin PCIe connectors, however, I'd like to get the highest wattage I can for the money. Also, I'm concerned about the make and reliability.

Here's more information

Quote
Most users who possess some knowledge of computer components, probably already know that there are only a few manufacturers dedicated in producing power supplies. To name a few... these include PC Power & Cooling, FSP, CWT and Impervio. In fact, a majority of big retail brands don't even produce their own power supplies ... they just basically re-brand and re-package the product. Corsair is one of those brands ... and I can see why. It's much easier to get someone to produce quality power supplies than to try and make them from scratch. The costs of R&D, production line and others expenses are just too much to make a decent ROI. It would be a lot better to just leave it to the experts.

This is where Channel Well Technology (CWT) comes in ... Corsair's OEM partner who's responsible for producing their power supplies. For those who don't know who CWT (Channel Well Technology) are ... here's a little blurb taken from their website

"Channel Well Technology Co., Ltd. was founded in Tao Yuan, Taiwan. They have been manufacturing power supplies since 1993. Since then, their products have shown up under different disguises including Antec, 2theMax, Thermaltake, Koolance, and Xigmatek, CWT themselves and now Corsair. CWT is one of the more complete OEM manufacturers, producing not only power supplies for the retail market, but also for the industrial sector."

I received an email from Corsair after we published the review. They emphasised an important point which they SAID we needed to tell our readers. Here's what they had to say ...

"It’s true that we do use engineering partners, such as CWT and Seasonic, to build our PSUs, but it is absolutely not the case that a Corsair PSU is simply a re-badged CWT or Seasonic. This is a really important point and the information that a Corsair PSU is much more than a re-badging is something that we’re very keen to highlight.

We have a dedicated power engineer in the US who analyses and assess the various designs from quality OEMs and then selects good basic models as a starting point. Crucially, we then test and analyse the performance, strengths and weaknesses of that design and modify and add/change components as required to improve the product to our requirements and quality STANDARDS. The modified design is then built by our engineering partners, which means that the end result is not the same as the OEM design – it is very much a Corsair PSU. As you know, the final designs are then also qualified in an oven at 50C running at full load (this applies to VX, TX and HX). It sounds like a small point, but it is actually very, very important. Solve : NTLDR Is missing or Corrupt, Press Ctrl Alt Delete to Restart.?

Answer»

Yes I have an HP Pavilion Dv2000 Series DV2125NR

I am running Windows XP Media Center Edition.
I have installed a new harddrive a SATA Seagate 120 GB 2.5"

I installed the new hard drive, and then I ran the recovery disk that I ordered from Hp.

I first install the first CD, then it ask for the 2nd CD. In the middle it ask for Supplementary CD - and if it did not come with one press CANCEL - So I press Cancel. Then it ask me to insert the first CD again so I do that. I get to 51 PERCENT, and it completely shuts off. When I reboot it says NTLDR is MISSING or Corrupt, press CTRL ALT DELETE to restart, I have tried the installation many of times and it does the same thing each and every time.

Any Advice?.. All Is welcome....HP presents a STRANGE ritual for Preparing the hard drive for recovery using the recovery discs (Manufacturer Menu). It might be worth a shot...

While not the exact same problem, SOMEONE who performed the ritual successfully: NTLDR missing.

Solve : Single Rail vs. 4 Rail??

Answer»

Power Supply question.....

I'm upgrading my systems' power supply and video card (to a GTX 260) and I've noticed the specs for a power supply being either single rail or 4 (or multiple) rail.
I'm not looking to go SLI with additional video cards...I'm just going to run ONE.

Would either spec BENEFIT me over the other if I were to choose a power supply with single or multiple rail?...or does it make any difference?

Thanks.I bought a Corsair TX850w with single rail design for my build mainly because a single rail supplys current with all current available to whatever components demand it. With a multi rail design, it splits the total current up between components = less total current on any given rail. If components on one rail have a hi demand, there is less total current available to those components, regardless of components on other rails having a low demand.

That's all just my OPINION of course. I'm sure someone else can come up with reasons why multi rails are better.

BTW, I run a GTX 260That's what I needed to know.

ThanksI always thought multi-rails had the feature of if one rail fails, then the other components on the other rails that haven't failed still RECEIVE power.

I may be wrong, but that's my understanding of multi-rails from my Antec TP 550.I wouldn't worry about multiple rails vs. single rails, it's MOSTLY marketing material.
Obviously, there is a difference, but in my opinion it's not something to worry about.
Instead, pick a high quality PSU from a reputable manufacturer that has picked up good reviews from trusted sources.Quote from: WSR on August 29, 2009, 02:48:21 AM

I guess your right but I don't see that as an advantage. If a power supply rail fails, the components on that rail fail. This alone would be cause to shut down and repair/replace the PSU. There is really no point in supplying power to the components on the other rails if your system is going to be operating partially dissabled. JMO

Solve : Hp scanner?

Answer»

I have a HP Desktop F4200 all in one scanner printer. My question Is can I upload a picture thats stored In MY PICTURES to the scanner so it will scan that picture or is this not possible?.Of course it's not possible - scanning is a physical activity, but what would be the purpose? What's on your mind, Tony?

Do you WANT to CHANGE the resolution of an existing picture?I just want to scan a picture that I have stored in my computer, I will have to just print it out on my printer with photo PAPER I guess. And how did you know my name?Quote from: srtony1946 on August 29, 2009, 07:39:04 AM

"srtony" - I'd take a shot that it's "Tony" too

And if it's already on your computer, just print it. All a scanner does is save the image to your system - but it's already there so I guess we don't understand what it is you need to do with the scanner.srtony1946, scanners are like cameras. They take a picture of whatever you lay on the glass. Then they squirt the digital data down the wire into your computer, where it is stored in a file. If an image is already stored in your computer, as a digital file, just how did you plan to lay it on the glass?
You should just be able to open the picture file on your computer, and print the picture from whatever software opens the image. Thanks for the replys, I just printed them out on my printer using HP ADVANCED photo paper, with best picture setting and let me tell you the pictures came out fantastic!. Way better than I expected! Thanks my friends. We're GLAD it worked out for you! The results you can get at home are pretty amazing!

Solve : Getting NIC and video card to recognize their drivers?

Answer»

My husband has a Dell Dimension 2400
Pentium 4 2.53 GHz
512 KB
BIOS A03
He had a trojan I could not remove, so I reinstalled Windows XP from the Dell disk that came with his computer. This was Service Pack 1A. 2 problems:
1. The video display could not be optimized. Control Panel>Appearance and Themes> Display>Settings did not allow me to slide the bar to the right to improve resolution. Video CARD is integrated on motherboard, I think.
2. I couldn't get the NIC to work, even after I loaded the drivers from another disk that came with the Dell. I finally accidentally fixed the problem by uninstalling the NIC, reloading the drivers, and restarting the computer. The NIC was then recognized as new hardware. He has a Broadcom 4401 Integrated network adapter and a Broadcom 440X Extreme Ethernet Controller. After I got this feature working, I was able to connect to our LAN and the Internet. I installed Trend Micro Internet Security Pro, which required updating P. At this point I decided to fix the video display, but wound up disabling the monitor and losing the display in Normal Mode. I could not RESOLVE this problem through many fixes I tried.
3. I finally re-reinstalled Windows XP 1a from the Dell disk. Once again, I cannot get the Broadcom devices or the video card to recognize their drivers. Therefore I have no Internet access from that computer, and poor video resolution. I haven't yet tried uninstalling the NIC like I did the first time.
You need to install the driversI did! The NIC drivers are in c:\dell\drivers\(number). But even when I specify that drive path, I get the message that the driver isn't in there. I'm going to work on this tomorrow. You need to install it from there. Usually, it just extracts the driver if I remember correctly. You have to go to the folder and actually find the installerQuote from: reeder2 on August 30, 2009, 06:19:12 PM

Probably easier to get the drivers directly from Dell. Go to Dell Support and type in the Service Tag Number located on the back of the computer. Download and transfer to CD or flash drive and transfer to Dimension 2400. Then force Windows to use those drivers.it still does the same thing that I saidI finally did install the drivers for the video card and the Broadcom NIC. Now we have excellent resolution and LAN access. I reinstalled (re-re-re, etc) from the Dell drivers and utilities disk, but PAID more attention to the drivepath. I guess I used the wrong one. I wish I could explain exactly what I did differently this time, so other people could get some help from this, but anyway the problems are solved, so thanks. The path you listed above is only where the drivers are EXTRACTED to from the Dell utilities disc. You still have to install them. Once they are installed you can delete that Dell folder from your drive.I guess I installed them, then. Case closed. ThanksLightbulb moment. Just realized the problem with the NIC was that I was trying to install the wrong driver. Once I found the right driver, the problem was solved. It was easier to figure out this time because I installed the video driver first, making the display easier to read when I was looking for the right Broadcam.
