Solve : EIDE hard drives compatible with SATA MoBo??

Answer» HI!
Please don't laugh at this if this is an elementary question. I've been out of the loop when it comes to technology for the last 4 years or so and am looking at upgrading my computer.

Currently, I have a Gigabyte GA-8IHXP motherboard with a 2.26 ghz intel CPU that pushes 2 IDE hard DRIVES (one is running on a WinPromise driver, but I do not have RAID set up), 2 optical drives (CD-RW and a CD-ROM), floppy drive and a Zip drive. I built this computer myself. This motherboard runs on PC800 or 1066 RAMBUS RIMM which is very EXPENSIVE even now (512 mb will set you back about $150-200). Right now, my mobo only has 512 mb and a graphic artist, I need more speed with applications!!

I was looking at the new Gigabyte GA-G1975x motherboard with a 3.0+ ghz CPU (HT) for an upgrade, but I see that it is SATA. Will my IDE hard drives and optical drives work with this motherboard? If so, how? Also, I wondered about the RAM -- does it have to be installed in pairs like the RAMBUS RIMM in my current system? I really don't want to give up my IDE hard drives as they are less than 1 year old. If they are not compatible with this new mobo that I'm looking at, is there a way to convert them? By the way, what is Hyper Threading? I saw that on the spec sheet for the new mobo.

I am sooooo out of the loop!

Please advise.

I don't want to make the mistake of buying everything for a new computer to build and then see that I will have compatibility issues.

Thanks for your help!Yes, you can use your IDE drives in it, since it has IDE connectors as well as the SATA connectors, according to GIGABYTE GA-G1975X Turbo Motherboard Review :: The G1-Turbo Features.

Re: Hyper Threading, I suggest you search via Google. There's plenty of info out there.I did read the review that was provided for me in the last post and saw that the mobo that I was looking at upgrading to does have 2 EIDE connections. However, how would this help for my situation? I have 2 EIDE hard drives, 2 EIDE optical (CD-RW, CD-ROM) drives and an IDE zip drive. Also, I wondered about the speed factor...since I not be utilizing the SATA connections, I probably wouldn't be using all the speed potential either, right? Is there a cable that allows for an IDE device to be connected to a SATA connector -- like an adapter cable?

Also, after reading the review on the GA-G1975x mobo, I was unclear whether the RAM had to be installed in pairs or not. I am not anxious to move into another motherboard that forces paired installation of RAM, but would like something as speedy.

Any suggestions on a smokin fast computer that I could use my existing storage devices with and a motherboard that does not have to have paired RAM installation?

Thanks for the help.

Please reply. To use dual channel mode, you have to have dual channel memory in pairs.

Each IDE channel can support two devices,so everything should work IF the memory is appropriate. But the fifth device coulod be problematic unless you get a PCI - IDE card to run the Zip drive. How was this set up on your previous machine? You asked how my IDE drives are currently set up on my computer. Well, let me see if I can remember....it's been so long.

I know that the IDE zip drive is plugged into it's own IDE connection on the mobo -- a smaller style IDE connection (more wires on the cable). The hard drives - one is plugged into the 133 connection and the other into the 100 connection. 1 hard drive (I think the 133 connection) is set up on a WinPromise (RAID) driver so that I could hook up the 2 IDE optical drives WITHOUT a problem. I am not, however, running an actual RAID array on this system.

This system was built 4 years ago and only ONE hitch during that time -- a virus that caused me to format and reintall windows -- but it was time for a GOOD cleaning.

I'm not sure if this style of connection hard drives makes sense to you but I think it's the best I can explain it. There are 4 ide slots on my current motherboard -- two 2 x UDMA ATA 133/100/66 Bus Master IDE ports and 2 x UDMA ATA 100/66 Bus Master IDE ports.

Solve : question on RAID?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a question to ask here. I have a PC desktop used as a file server. It's got two hard disks, big memory RAMS and is a pentium 4. It also has RAID system installed in the system. It's RAID 1.

My question is how do i know if ONE has failed or not since the two hard disks are identical to each other. Sorry for asking this question as this is my FIRST time to have experienced using the RAID.

Thank you very much in advance

Solve : disconnected??

Answer» WHENEVER I play BF2, I get good ping (under 100). But out of no where, I get disconnected.. (a problem shows up on the screen as: There is a problem with your connection. then i get disconnected. its been happening for a while and ive just SUCKED it up whenever it happens, ive tried fixing it by REWIRING my network system and putting cat6's in. still happens. my network goes from modem to wifi, then my computer is cat6'ed up (because its also a hub) and my other computers wifi'ed. help please.ISP? Hardware involved? Other issues with that machine? Issues with other machines on network? More details please. You may want to check if a firewall is involved, make sure all ports are forwarded, through the firewall and or router. If you need help forwarding ports through you router please check http://www.portforward.com/routers.htmwell, i rewired my network again, but this time i put it as: modem to hub ((for wired computers(linksys)) then i put a cat6 running to my wifi (dlink di-624). but it disconnects then reconnects very frequently. should i just get a better hub? (its an older linksys)Quote
You may want to check if a firewall is involved, make sure all ports are forwarded, through the firewall and or router. If you need help forwarding ports through you router please check http://www.portforward.com/routers.htm

it says
"The DI-624 will not allow you to forward enough ports, to run VoipBuster. You should try using the DMZ portion of this router if it is available. Alternatively you can try switching the router to BRIDGED mode. You will need to CONTACT your ISP to switch to bridged mode, so they can make the required changed on their end."

i dont know anything about the "DMZ portion" of my wifi. I have alltel, but would a bridge fix the problem? or should i just go back and buy new wired 5port 10/100/1000 hub? (my current one is only 10/100) which would be the better choice to go, in your opinion?

Solve : Promedia 5.1, Logitech, or None of the Above??

Answer»

I currently have the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speaker system and I'm looking at maybe upgrading, but I'm not sure what to get. I'm pretty happy with my ProMedias, and so I'm leaning towards the Promedia 5.1, but reading REVIEWS on www.newegg.com is making me a little iffy and I'm considering the Logitech Z-5500 speaker set. Any opinions on either one or even a different set of SPEAKERS I should get? Thanks.btw, I have purchased the z-5500s and they are great. SOUND is great and they look BETTER than the klipsh. as far as sound, there is no shortage with this system. the only problem is that the SUBWOOFER is enormous!! it seriously is 15"x13"x13" and is heavy. other than that, a great system!

Solve : Building Custom PC ''power supply''?

Answer»

HI, i want to combine 5 computers into one big machine inside a rackmount fourniture, we think we have pretty much everything figure out. but THERES still a few things i need to verify. we want 1 powersupply for all cd roms, 1 power supply for all HDD etc...

We want one 300w power supply for 6 cd-roms (no MotherBoards, No HDD, just the cd roms) do you think it is safe? do you think it will cause a problem if i increase the lenght of the powercables? I know you cant have IDE cables longer then 18 inch, is there a limit for power suppy cables? Can I use other wires that are not use (black, yellow and red) from the original ''motherboard'' CONECTOR to create additional molex (HDD/cd ROM) conectors.

How many HDD would you consider safe to hook on one PowerSupply, nothing else on it just the HDD's? how much ''Juice'' does a HDD take?

Is it possible To have 2 MotherBoards on one PowerSupply? (again, just the two motherboards would be hooked on the powersupply)

Any info comments would be very apreciated!

Je connait du monde Bien étrange!
One power supply should be GOOD (rated at 300w) You should try to KEEP the power from extending past 15 feet to ensure that the power doesn't start to dimmish. Limiting cable is a good way to insure that you keep away from interference. I cannot answer your question about the power consumption of your CD-ROM/ r/rw... but you should check the manufacturers website for additional information, on the power consumption. 300w should be more than enough for your situation.Google "power supply calculator" it will help you in your project.BudallicA.....Absolutely. They will never know the differance.

Solve : pink line on my screen, won't go away?

Answer»

I had left my notebook FMV-Biblo NX70J/T running all night as I sometimes do for DOWNLOADING. I'd put down the screen so that the screen shuts off, but everything else keeps running.

When I woke up today, there was a thin pink vertical line going from the top of the screen to the bottom, to the right of the start button, overlapping everything. Everything except the mouse icon.
Also, if part of it passes over a white area (such as on this forum screen) that part is invisible.

When the computer is off, the line is gone. When I restart the computer, the windows xp home boot screen comes up and I see the line. Then when it switches from the boot screen to the LOGON screen, the screen goes BLACK and the line goes away. Then at the logon screen it's back again.

What's happened?! Is this permanent?
COuld be a failed video adapter, or overheating. If it has persisted on subsequent boot ups, it may be a sign of serious problems as you cannot cange the video card in a laptop.

Only chance would be to update the video driver from the manufacturer;s website and cross your fingers. Thanks for the input. I just updated the video drivers and restarted, but nothing changed. I also tried reverting my desktop theme back to the original windows, but no dice.

I need to use my computer today, but I will give it a long rest and LET my battery uncharge overnight and see if it takes.I wasn't talking desktop theme. I was referring to resolution. Right CLICK on desktop, Properties, Settings and you should be able to choose between 1024 x 768, or higher. What is it set on now? Can you adjust it higher? Now there is another pink line right alongside the first one. A double line!!!

MY settings are on 1024 by 768 which fits my screen perfectly. THe colour quality is "highest 32 bit" I tried putting the screen resolution on all the different settings, but the lines stay.

No fix from the latest driver, no improvement with resolution, etc. It sounds like a shot video adapter. Bad news from home for a laptop.

Solve : How is this possible??

Answer»

I had a diskette I used to take files to/from school. Well, for some ODD reason it wouldn't read at school. I could see the files, but whwn i tried to do anything, the drive would make a lot of noise and give me an error that made no sense. I can't even remember the error, but that's irrelevant. I took the floppy home and tried to get it to read on my XP machine (school uses Win2000 Prof) and I finally got an error that was coherent: My disk wasn't formatted! What?? Just how did I write to the *censored* thing if it was incorrectly formatted?? OK, whatever. I had another copy on my hdd, so I just formatted the sucker. WORKED perfectly, but I managed to maintain my dignity by insisting it was just the "fact" that my diskette was formatted for only external floppy drives. Being PC illiterate, they bought it.

That's one "HUH???". The second one:

After this happened, I decided to format all my diskettes (all 10 of them). One after another went smoothly. Then one refused to format. I tried it again, no go. So I exited the Prompt and selected Format... from the A: right-click menu. It refused to format, again saying it couldn't. Annoyed, I tried to access the drive. Of course, it told me I had to format. This time, it worked.

1. How can a floppy diskette lose its format? It makes no sense to me!
2. Why on Earth would a floppy be unable to format when I try to do it manually, but if I try to access it it works, even though the same window pops up? I wasn't angry at that point, I wasn't laughing. It was just... wha...?Got any magnets nearby? Are the floppys being bent or pressed on? Static electricity? As for why it would refuse to format, that could be a number of things. Either the disk itself, or the drive. Seeing as how other disks worked fine, I would say that there's just one oddball. Do you buy preformatted disks?

Flame1. No magnets.
2. I take care of my floppies - great care. I make sure they aren't bent or pressed on.
3. I don't think there would be ESD, but that's probably the culprit.

1. Yes, they were formatted, the box said, for PC/MAC. But I just bought 25 more, all formatted for PC. (I'm still going to format them before I use them)Save your time, money, and stress. Go buy a USB flash drive.

FlameI'd do that, except for the fact that floppies are cheap, while replacing a broken flash drive would be... painful. (In Sr. High, things tend to get broken. Not as some violent cult, just everyday wear and tear that gets exaggerated around TEENS. And I'd hate to replace a $30 flash drive when floppies are so darn cheap) I really didn't want to buy so many floppies, but really, I wanted to replace those cheap floppies, and they were sold in 25-packs or 50-packs. I didn't want 50, and the 25 were only 5 USD, so...

I am interested in getting a flash drive and was already, but I'm saving my pennies for that. It'll take a while with no job...I agree with Flame, buy a USB flash disk.
You'll get more storage with a lot less problems.
I have about 10 of them and not a single problem.
You know what I do Dilbert... I not only put my files on my USB Glash Drive, butmy cousin owns a web server, so I upload my files there, just incase anything happened to the drive

FlameOK, OK. I'll save up for a flash drive. But in the meantime, I'll stick to floppy and CD as I don't have the flash drive yet. Though I am also interested in a zip drive; it appears to be cheaper if you're willing to not buy a 1 GB flash drive (I'm not, I'd rather have something like 512 MB as I don't have that much data on my computer. Heck, I'm using less than 10 GB right now including Windows and updates and AntiVirus, etc...). How good are zip drives?Your school has a Zip Drive? The idea is to have something reliable that almost every computer will have. A USB port is the best thing today, as more and more computers are not coming with floppy drives...

FlameFor your purposes, any size flash drive would probably be sufficient. Here's a 128MB drive for $9.99 plus shipping/handling: Lexar Media 128MB JumpDrive Portable USB 2.0 Drive.

And, here's more.Quote

Your school has a Zip Drive? The idea is to have something reliable that almost every computer will have. A USB port is the best thing today, as more and more computers are not coming with floppy drives...

Flame

I was under the impression they had external (USB) zip drives. Wikipedia has a picture of one. But I will probably go with the flash drive, and later get a zip drive just because I like having computer "toys". 8-) But that's for later... it makes for good BRAGGING to the other techhies around the schoolgrounds.
lol Yes, but I would keep the zip drive for home. You wouldn't want to lug that drive around school all day Not bad for home use though.

FlameConsider this Dilbert. For less than the cost of a 250MB external zip drive, you could buy an 80GB hard drive and an external enclosure for it and thereby have an 80GB external hard drive. Or, go with a true External Hard Drive, such this 80GB for about $92.50 including shipping. Now, which makes more sense, the zip drive or one of the options for obtaining an external hard drive?

And, if you compare the cost per MB of zip drives vs. flash drives, it makes zip drives look like a rather expensive item, doesn't it? I see an Iomega 250MB USB Zip Starter Kit with 3 Disks from TigerDirect.com for $140. But, I could get a 1GB flash drive for less than $50. I'll let you do the math; I think you get the picture. At this point though, Dilbert just wants the Zip Drive as a new toy

Solve : WORKSTATIONS?

Answer»

I NEED A NEW WORK STATION TO RUN PRO-E AND AUTOCAD. I'VE CHECKED OUT DELL AND COMPAQ. ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?If you get a Dell or HP or Compaq, get one with 64-bit dual processors & plenty of RAM to handle the high-end graphics.Hey just from personal experiance, stay away from the Compaq BRAND. Even though HP now owns Compaq, HP computers are STILL made with much more quality. Please Also stay away from emachines as they too are made of cheap components. As far as buying any computers other then the ones that I've recommended not to try, you should be good! If you like intel processors stay with a P4 w/hyperthreading Dual Core or ViiV. Their Pentium D is not recommended although it saves power because it will lack in processing power. If you the type who wants to give AMD a try, stick with the Atlon XP 64 Bit Processors and or the OPTERON series processor. These are high-end processors that will ensure that you get a good quality computer that has more bang for it's buck.

;)I only give advice with computers devices that I've used!

Solve : Installing Texas Instruments 3 port firewire card?

Answer»

Hi,

I am trying to install a "OHCI 1.1, 1394a Link Layer Controller integrated with a 1394a, 400Mbps, 3-port Physical Layer (PHY) (TSB43AB23) from Texas Instruments. clicky

Unfortunately, after having reformatted the system, the device GIVES an error code 10, saying it does not share resources because it has not been activated.

The person who first installed it got it working by accident, so he told me.

Unfortunately, Texas Instruments does not provide drivers for this card. They rely on it being autodetected and installed by Windows. This it does, it just can't use it.

Tried the following:

  • Reinstalling device
  • Moving it to a different PCI slot

The device has never worked properly, it actually stopped working a few days before the PC was reformatted.

Any ideas? No one's got a clue?If the problem is such that it has never worked properly, have you considered making use of your warranty? Have you tried emailing TI support about this?Texas Instruments require you to fill out a ridicilously large amount of personal information before you're allowed to contact them. However, if someone could give me the TI technical support E-mail adress, that would help.

And I have no idea if the device is still under warranty, even if it is traded in for a new one, there is no quarantee that it will work. It has worked before. With that history and that support, I would move to another device quickly OR follow the laborious TI support protocol if you want to get that working.Quote

I'm just bothered about this "no drivers" issue. Have you gone back to the vendor about this? How can anyone say there are no drivers?

I'm a bit confused now about whether it has worked or not - you did say in your first post, "The device has never worked properly". If it has worked properly in the past, then are you prepared to do the ultimate to get it working? i.e. reinstall Windows. I would think that's your best shot, if indeed the Firewire drivers are part of Windows' device library. The firewire card was installed by someone else, he told me he accidently got it to work by switching PCI slots a few times and after a while, the card, along with Windows XP stopped working so I reformatted it and now the card will be detected, but it can not be assigned resources.

I think the card may have been damaged by inept HANDLING.

As for the drivers part: TI seems conceited enough to trust Microsoft to supply the end-user with drivers.

Quote
Have you tried [emailprotected]?

I can give that a try, is it a verified adress?

Quote
is it a verified adress?
No, just an educated guess!
Good guess.

I've got a confirmation E-mail from them. Is there any way to obtain E-mail adresses from a webpage such as the TI support page without actually submitting any information? Sometimes it can be found in the source code, but not always. It helps against compulsory registration. If the email address is not embedded in the source code, then it may be possible to obtain the email address USING some "alternative TECHNIQUES". Those techniques tend to be time-consuming and illicit.

But you're onto a fairly safe bet, adding "support" to the domain name.Much obliged. I'll let know if TI DECIDES to respond when you skip their reg. form. They took the liberty of mailing me their registration list.

How helpful.

Solve : Power up issues?

I have a custom built home computer, and sometimes it won't power up, or rather start the bios. I can't figure out why, PLEASE HELP!

What do you mean it won't power up? The fans don't spin sometimes when you press the power button?

FlameNo No, I mean, my bios won't iniate.Do you have virus and Spyware protection? When did this start? Has it ever worked properly? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

FlameIf ur talking abt BIOS then it does start, otherwise how would u know that its the BIOS.
I think ur talking abt Windows not starting, the PC works right? Does it reboot or give u an error message.
I need more info to help u.Alright, it has always happened, I THOUGHT maybe it was a hardware configuration issue, but no, I tore it down and rebuilt it plenty of times.... Then I thought maybe it was a power issue, put in a new power supply, nope didn't work.....And Guy I know it's the BIOS because the BIOS DOESN'T Load.....thats just it, every other time, I turn on my computer, my BIOS, does not load, I get NO action from my computer, the CPU monitor light flashes, the harddrive lights flashes, the CD ROM doesn't and my Monitor doesn't acknowledge the computer being started. No reboots, no error messages, NOTHING, point blank, I get NO action....I even used my Mother board's Error Reporter to try and figure it out. Still nothing, I should TELL you all, I have a 939 board. PCIE x16 slots, Sata Hardrive, and Dual Core Processor.I am truly amazaed at the amount of info here that was NOT included in the original post!!!You guys really aren't very helpful....If my computer wasn't down at the moment (I am in the process of reformatting the OS...it has nothing to do with the problem at hand) I would give you guys all my system info.We try to be helpful, but it helps to have all pertinent info at theoutset. If you are formatting the drive, you are beyond a non-functional BIOS.Wow, I give up with you people, The Formatting has NOTHING to do with the hardware issue, I think I will just sit down and figure it out myself, thank you though. Circles are quite fun to run around in.The on again off again bios, I think you have a hardware problem and my money is on the psu.
Do you have total CONFIDENCE in the size & QUALITY of the new psu you put in?
Everyone here is really trying to help you.I'm with Fed. In diagnosing an intermittent startup problem, I would strip the PC down to its core, and try to boot several times, with as few things connected as possible. Then repeat with a different graphics card. Then with different memory configuration. Then with different processor. Etc.

Solve : Internet down after few hours?

Answer»

Hi,

I need your help. I have a PC that's connected to the internet. what's happening is that the internet was down after every few hours. I don't know what's causing it down?

I have a few IP address i bought from my ISP. For example, This troubled PC is connected to 211.21.20.23. Then, i have the rest of my other LAN computers connected to 211.21.20.22. When the troubled PC was down (by this i mean, i can't surf the internet at all), i CHECK the other PCs that's connected to other IP and they were alright. I did not have any problem with getting to the internet.

When this happens, all i do is to either restart the computer or re-enable the LAN from the network connection under control panel.

The strange THING is that after the internet's back on, everything's OK. After a few hours (3 or 4 hrs), the same problem occurs again.

Is there anyone might be ABLE to help me?

Your help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you in advance Does your ISP have a "fair use" policy that prevents you from being connected for more than four hours? Whatever the case, it sounds like you should take this up with your ISP first.

Solve : PCI Hardware?

If there already exists a question about this and it is being answered please refer me to the proper page!

Here is my question:
I know there exists a few different types of PCI hardware slots, the thing that confuses me is which PCI cards are backward compatible and does anyone have a distinction between the different types. A link to the different types with pictures would be really helpful!

;DThanks AgainI've never heard of different types of PCI - You've got your PCI and your AGP. It's fairly universal; what may have to be backward-compatible in some CASES, I think, is the motherboard. Solve : Processor compatibility?

Answer»

Right now i have a "amd ATHLON xp 2200+ mmx 1.8 Gig" processor and i want to KNOW if it is possible to simply buy a better processor and just put it in. If you can is it PLUG and play like ram, or does it require some instalation like a graphix card or some serious installation where you must know what you are doing?
yeah simply plug n play, make sure you get the right socket cpu, im guessing its a socket A, all you have to do is take off the heatsink (the big silver piece of METAL with a fan on it) undo the leaver (if U have 1) take out the square looking chip and replace it with your new one, and reattach the heatsink.

and also look in your motherboard manual to see what model numbers it can hold. (instructions will be in their for the cpu)Sweet, thanx manTHe key is getting a compatible processor. Not any one will necessarily look. All the info is in the motherboard manual though.

Hey guys and gals heres my problem...

I went to bed last NIGHT and shut down my computer. When I woke up this morning and turned on my computer, my D: drive (Maxtor HD connected to SECONDARY Slave) is not recognized by windows anymore. My bios recognized it, device manager says it's working properly, but computer management did not RECOGNIZE a D; drive.

Here is my drive listing now...
Local Disk (C:)
CD-Drive (E:)
DVD Drive (F:)

No D drive to be found!!! Someone please help !!!

Thanks
Do you have virus and Spyware PROTECTION? Have you made any CHANGES to your system recently? Which operating system are you using?

FlameWhat operating system? Is it up to date? Is the drive formatted NTFS? More details are helpful.

Solve : Any hope here??

Answer»

Here is the system that I just installed PCLinuxOS on and as predicted, it does run a little slow. It's not too bad for what I will be doing, but if I could speed it up a bit CHEAP, then i might do it. I know that more RAM would help, but I have no 256 MB sticks and there are only 2 slots. What about processor? Is there any room to grow here or would that be a complete waste, even if i can pick one up on ebay?

I don't know jack about processor upgrades.

Platform : Windows 98 Second Edition Ver. 4.10Well ur system is quite dated. You will need to buy a new CPU soon because u just cant do much with a 7 year old 500 mhz CPU. You can find good ONES for cheap now adays. 250 mb ram is enough u dont need more. I dont know much abt Linux, but why not install Windows 98/XP?
Right now only changing ur CPU, or maybe getting a new computer (since they have become cheap now adays) will do the trick, its ur only chance at making the OS u installed work, but if u dont need the power why would u need a new OS? what will u be doing?first find the make of your mobo, then check the internet for that. amd should have a pdf of all the specs of your mobo.in this it should have all the possibilities, but i think there's only so much you can upgrade. but first check how much RAM it can take, and then upgrade that, because ram comes cheap these days. then check up on how in any part that you don't have the best it can take (besides the hard drive because with that you just have to think about how much you need). this is suprisingly inexpensive because it's an old computer.Track, this is not my main system. Its just a "tinker" system that I experimenting with Linux on. I know that it is dated.

Hyper, i looked on the AMD web site and i think i am about maxed in processor. RAM is probably my only option.

PKMoreRAM would help, but it willnotputit in hyperdrive. How do you like Linux so far, and what other distros, if any, have you tried? Before looking to upgrade, why not consider the things that you can do for free? Run an efficient window manager, for example - rather than Gnome or KDE's defaults, both of which will make that machine sluggish. Your machine will whizz with FVWM; also try Enlightenment or WindowMaker. This is my first experience with a full install (dual boot) of Linux. I have tried a few distros - Puppy, DSL, Ubuntu, Vector - and PCLinuxOS was by far superior, though it does seem a bit resource intensive for Linux. The support community is outstanding.

Rob - how do i CHANGE to a more efficient windows mananger in PCLinuxOS? Will it still look and flow as sharp as the default?

PKQuote

Rob - how do i change to a more efficient windows mananger in PCLinuxOS? Will it still look and flow as sharp as the default?
This question may need to be directed to the PCLinuxOS forum. I know that PCLinuxOS is based on MANDRAKE, so in theory a Mandrake-packaged window manager will work (see RPMFind) but in practice such a change may break things. Better to get the distro maintainers to package up one of the less resource-intensive WMs for PCLinuxOS.

Of course they may just say "no" because they wouldn't be able to make an alternative WM comply with their "MS Windows-like" objective. In that case, like it or not, you're better off with a more "Linux-like" distribution; one like VecotrLinux that actually tries hard to run on older hardware.

I'm not familiar with PCLinuxOS - it seems to be a relative newcomer. Who knows - they may or may not address your very issue in future releases. But as all distro maintainers, they have to think very hard about their priorities. I SUSPECT speed is not one of them.

Solve : power on 2nd pc over network??

Answer»

this might be a stupid question haha sorry if it is

im using a laptop in my bedroom which is connected to a desktop pc downstairs via straight thru ethernet cable. i often access files from the desktop with my laptop, but when the pc is off, i have to GO downstairs, turn it on then turn it off when im done. Is their a way of turning the desktop pc on and off using my laptop!! thanxIf this was ever integrated into any software, to turn on and off a computer remotely, it whould be a highe security problem, you can imagine. there is a lot of security in knowing that your computer is off and nothing can touch it. if someone set this up it would be a matter of hacking into a wireless connection and controlling a computer completely. so i don't think there is a way, for security's sake.
PS. you could ACTUALLY walk down stairs and turn it on There is no way to turn on ur PC using an ethernet connection, but u may be able to find an alternative method of turning ur PC on.. for instense maybe a long stick? Thats a brush idea but u can make some sort of device that will turn it on with the PUSH of a button or somewhat if u put ur mind to it.
Why close ur PC anyway? u can have the monitor turned off to save power if ur worried abt a costly bill.Check the desktops BIOS and see if you have the option to set it to "wake on lan". Then instead of shutting down completely, put it in sleep MODE. Also set the desktop to sleep after a specific period of inactivity.lol after a thew months of going downstairs to turn it on and off you would understand how anoying it is!

i have been leaving it in standby alot, turning the monitor off but i understand this still TAKES up quite a bit of power?PC in standby probably uses no more than 15 watts. That's less than a nickel's worth of electricity a day.

Wake on LAN is fine for this purpose. Presumably you have already installed TightVNC or RealVNC for true remote control. No? i can still access files from the hardrive when its in standby. its all i wanna do really

i was just worried that it takes up alot of tricity

Solve : Noise from Monitor?

Answer»

When I run 'Civilization III' on my computer, a high pitched noise continually comes from the monitor. If I TAP the screen the sound goes away for about 10 seconds, then starts again.

Please tell me if anyone has an idea of what causing the problem and how to fix it.

My OS is 'XP Home EDITION'. My monitor is 'hp pavilion mx75'Sounds like the monitor is/is getting faulty. Do you have another monitor to hook up as a test?

Great taste in games, by the way. *salute*Sounds exactly like a fault in the monitor. is it a CRT or an LCD?

does it just happen when the game is going, or is it constant, or does it start with the game and keep going after quit?

btw great game but i THINK i like civ II better .I tried a second monitor and there was no noise.

I have a CRT monitor.

Usually the noise starts with the game and continues till I exit, but some times it starts in the MIDDLE of the game.

By the way, the noise comes only with Civilization III.

I also have Civilization II and I just got Civilization IV. Quote

I also have Civilization II and I just got Civilization IV.

hehe lucky you. it could be, and thi is a wild guess, that the refresh rate with the game is too much for the monitor to handle? probably not because this is a shot in the dark but consider it.The screen was set at a refresh rate of 60 Hertz and there was no lower setting.

The other settings which were not recommended were:
70 Hertz, 72 Hertz, 75 Hertz, 85 Hertz, and 100 Hertz.maybe you should mess about with the brightness. contrast ect to see if it sorts it out, lol you never know do you

Solve : Keyboard Problem "stuck"?

Answer»

Okay, I posted this at the XP site but this is really bad for my keyboard. Here it is,
Okay, I have this huge problem with my keyboard. My number lock key is "stuck". The light won't turn on when I press number lock, nothing happens at all actually! The number pad acts like arrows when I log on, (4:right, 6:left, etc). Like I said I can't change it! This is true with my Caps lock too! (just won't work) I need my number lock for a variety of reasons and I have had this problem for a COUPLE of months now, and I am on the virge of breaking! This is a fairly new keyboard, and I really don't want to get rid of it, it's pretty nice. I got it a year or two ago. Can anyone please help me, I have XP proffesional, and before I log on the light is on, after it, it turns off. I can't change it either way. Just for the record of who else wants to try this dilema, I pried off the keys, looks good, PRESSED the button that the key PRESSES, nothing. Just curious, could this have anything to do with the software for the keyboard software, or the DRIVERS, or maybe just the hardware isn't agreeing with each other. Open to any, and all suggestions. THANK you!
Please help!

Desperately Yours, The Boar...
-Ask if you have any questions. What kind of keyboard is it?How does it connect? USB or standard mouse port?

FlameMy keyboard connects to the port right next to the mouse port (USB, I think). My keyboard type is a standard 101/102-key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 keyboardUSB is flat, PS/2 is round and probably purple.

How about deleting all keyboard references in Device manager and rebooting? If no joy, then uninstall and reinstall your keyboard software. If still no joy, new keyboard.I have already done that but! Okay, I have a brilliant idea, can anyone give me the program you use to set the keys key 4:is 4 on the keyboard. The keys on the number pad work, just as different functions. Now the coding of the number pad and other keys are jumbled up (num lock:is insert, etc). Please help!

Solve : DVI Connection = Blank Monitor?

Answer»

I am installing a PNY 6600GT in place of an existing PNY 5700le in my daughters emachines T2082 (Athlon XP 2000, 768MB RAM, Windows XP). The 6600 only has DVI inputs and the emachines LCD Monitor only has a VGA output. The card comes with two identical "adaptors" to go from VGA to DVI. I get a "no input signal" on the monitor when plugging the 6600 in (the fan is running on the card). However, I also get a a "no input signal" if I PLUG the monintor into the 5700le DVI input with one of the adaptors. The 5700 has one VGA and one DVI port (the VGA is how the 5700 is currently hooked up). I have tried both adaptors with no luck. Based on these facts, it does not appear that the 6600 is the issue. What's the problem - is there a setting I need to change?

Thanks for any help.

Try installing the device drivers for the video card (use the CD that came with the card to install the drivers).

Best regards,

Installing the drivers from the CD got the 5700le working through the DVI port. The CD screen says something to the effect of "drivers installed for 5700le". There is no way to choose a different card than what is currently in the machine. The 6600 still showed no display. I therefore went to PNY's website to download the latest drivers. That link took me to the normal NVIDA site for updated drivers. I downloaded and installed the latest but the 6600 still does not display. What else can I try?

Thanks for the help. Are both the PNY 6600GT and the PNY 5700le video cards installed on the motherboard at the same time? If so, remove one of them and see if the other works. If not, then either the PNY 6600GT card is damaged or the drivers are damaged or the wrong type. Try downloading and installing new drivers from the manufacturer.

No. Only one AGP slot. The 5700le always works when installed. I deleted and installed the 88.98 nvida drivers again (PNY does not seem to have drivers on their website). No luck. I have tried the 6600 in another computer and it works. That computer runs a ATI card and I did not install any drivers, but I could immediately see content on the monitor and windows booted. Although I obviously can't see on the monitor, I do not belive windows is booting when the 6600 is installed.

When I we installing the drivers again the program did say a file ALREADY existed (although I uninstalled the drivers from control panel), I SELECTED overwrite. Anti-virus software off when installing drivers. Again the 5700le works like a charm EVEN through the DVI port.
For anyone who digs this tread up through a search, the problem is my motherboard is not 8X. Most 8X cards will run with 4X boards but apparently not the 6600GT, it requires a true 8X board.RCAWood:

Thanks for letting us know how it turned out! Yeah, it makes sense, now, that it was some kind of a hardware compatibility problem.

Blessings to you,

Solve : 16070 MHz Processor... [bad cpu problems]?

Answer»

Hi EVERYONE. Last night my computer suddenly crashed while I was playing CS Source.
When I rebooted it everything seemed to be fine, and I opened the case and temperatures felt
good. I verified this with the bios which said my computer was running at 28/30 deg c.
I shut it down for the night to be safe, but when I turned it on this morning I checked my
system information, and discovered that my computer thinks that I have a AMD 64 3200+ (which i do)
that runs at 16070 MHz / 16 GHz (which i dont). I checked the bios, but everything looked normal
in the processor power settings, and I don't overclock at all. I also checked using diagnostic software,
which also said my processor is running insanely fast... To my knowledge there were no power surges
or issues last night when my computer crashed, but I do run it in a very warm room. All my fans
are running properly. My RAM is detected properly. I hope this is enough information for you to help
me. I would really appreciate any advice on how to FIX this, because I am pretty certain that it is a
very bad thing. Oh yeah... I run Windows XP Pro (SP2) and now things that fade on and out (start menu
items) go slowly, but everything else is as fast as ever. I have a 6600 GT (nvidia videocard). So...
please help me out. Thanks in advance for all of you who do!

[EDIT]
Ok, I just went and ran my computer again quick. Nothing had changed, but I tried playing CS:S again
to see what happened. It ran... but the fade effects went very slow (MENUS), and once I started a game
everything ran in extremely slow MOTION. Reloading the glock took about 30 seconds. It ran smoothly,
but it must have been at about 2 fps... this is a really scary new addition to my problem. Somebody please
help!

Solve : RAMBUS/RDRAM upgrade Q's. Speed? Specs?

Answer»

Lemmee see...I have the gist of RAMBUS but have a few questions before going shopping so I don't completely eff it up: 1)Install in pairs where each half of the pair is the same speed and capacity as the other. A second pair (4-slot m'board) must match in speed but need not match in capacity. Optimal config assumed w/out defaulting to lowest speed if different speed pairs are used. Right??

OK, now the nitty gritty part where I am an idiot. Take Ebay for example. I see pics of RIMM's and the product ID/part # is printed and is followed by either a '/8' or '/16'? I think I need the 16...but what does this mean? 2nd question: I see -40 and -45 (ns?) listed on these RIMM's also. My system supports up to 50ns and I ASSUME that the higher number is better, right? But I do not see anything for sale that says -50 on it? Hmmm? Below in my Memory Snapshot, the memory currently installed (one slot) says 400MHZ...so where does PC 800 derive from? Or do the 2 slots function as a pair 400 + 400 = 800 = thus PC800? Only other thing i can figure is that 400 is the channel speed and RDRAM is 2-channel per card or something = 800. Bottom line, I can go 2GB, but I need to know what exactly I'm looking for from a specs standpoint and my machine. Longwinded............sorry and thanks from the idiot. Snapshot below.

Solve : DirectWave Internet Access?

I live about three miles past the middle of nowhere on the edge of Where The *censored* Are We. Which means I have to ACCESS the internet with a dial up connection.

Now, I do have DirectTv and they advertise DirectWave Internet Access but I would really LIKE to hear from folks that have this service. If there is any. It's expensive as *censored* too.

But, when I was on broadband (before I bought my new house in the woods) I loved it. I was even getting into playing ONLINE GAMES. Which of course is a no go out here in the hinterlands.

So does anyone have any experiences with DirectWave?

Solve : Building an Altair...?

Not sure where to post this, but I'll ask. Has anybody here ever read anything online or have any PERSONAL experience about building/programming a 70's style computer? Sort of like the Altair style early computer. I am not having any luck finding anything online on this. -Thanks, Scotthttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altair_8800

"...Programming the Altair was an extremely tedious process where one toggled the switches to positions corresponding to an 8080 opcode, then used a special switch to enter the code into the machine's memory, and then repeated this step until all the opcodes of a presumably complete and correct program was in place. When the machine first shipped the switches and lights were the only interface, and all one could do with the machine was make programs to make the lights blink..."

If you would like to something a little more practical that is used TODAY: look at microcontrollers (not MICROPROCESSORS). Some kits can be found here:

Wow! That site is awesome! What do these kits come with? Like how broken down is each kit? Very COOL though, I will be buying many of these.

I got a high pitched noise coming from my tower, and it's driving me insane!! I can't pinpoint it even with the casing off, though I think it's coming from the PSU.

It starts whenever a program is started - be it a Word doc or a GAME, never when just on desktop with no progs running. It's not constant - it can be intermittent, very strangely (and maybe separately) I've NOTICED on FM2006 it makes a clicky noise as I scroll over lists of names.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

P4 3.2
450 watt PSU
ASRock Dual 440 PCIe Pro mobo
2 x 512 KingstonProbably a PSU or fan sound. Can you get close enought to hear? You can put a screwdriver on each component, one at a time and put the larger end in your ear to hear better. (An old trick!)I piece of plastic tube in your ear works well.
Don't try and touch the screwdriver or the plastic tube on a moving fan.thanks guys - I put my ear to he psu and think its coming from in there, but it could be coming from my processor which is pretty much next to it. (dunno if processors make noise like!)

The PSU is one that came with my tower, so I'm gonna replace it with a Colors iT 550w Gold one. If it doesn't solve it, I'll be back!

nice tip about the screwdriver too!Let us know how it works out! I've replaced the PSU with the Colors iT 550w one - and had a gloriously silent FIRST couple of minutes before it started

I noticed when playing Pirates and FM2006, it corresponds with lag on the screen - how can I word this - when the 2D game engine of FM2006 is on screen, sometimes it starts to lag in an evenly jerky sort of way, at the exact same time as the noise starts, which is intermittent (in time with the 'jerks'). You get me?

On some other programs it can just be almost constant. I'm thinking motherboard or processor because it seems to be doing it only when the PC is 'working'. When it's just on the desktop with no programs running it doesn't do it.

Bit more system info -

P4 3.2 HT
Arctic Cooling freezer unit (it's not freezer unit fan I'm sure)
2x512mb Kingston memory
Colors iT 550w PSU
ASRock P4 Dual 880 PCIe mobo
NVidia GeForce 6600
200G HD
Sony DVDRW

I've had a listen to the HD, DVD and graphics card and am 99% sure it's not them. Funnily enough it still sounds like the PSU, but if it is it's not the fault of the PSU cos obviously I just replaced that - could it be a BIOS setting? I have a temperature readout on my case - with the side fan on it runs about 18 - 24, without it can run up to about 28, so I think thats ok.

If I can give you guys anymore info just ask, I'm tearing my hair out with this so any help or ideas will be gratefully received!Your lagg and them sound issues you are having could be your onboard sound or sound card. Using onboard sound can create what looks like lagg in a game and distort the sound, when infact its because the soundcard or onboard sounds not UPTO much. I would swap out the soundcard. Or if you have onboard i would get a soundcard. A good way to test before you buy, is to disable the sound under device manager and see if what you see as lagg disappears in the GAMES. Let us know how you get on.Thanks I'll try that - I have a pretty decent Soundblaster Live 24-bit SC, but maybe I haven't disabled the on-board properly or something? Anyway, I'll let you know the results.

I'd sure rather it be the soundcard then the processor! I disabled the on board sound and disabled my soundcard from device manager - unfortunately it never affected the high pitched torture coming from my tower...

I took the other side of my case off and pressed my ear to the backplate - I have to say it sounded a bit louder from behind the area of my processor.

The issue where it lags in tandem with the display is just one part of it - it also eminates an almost constant high pitched whine.

Any other ideas anyone?

Just so you know I'm running XP with SP2.

Solve : Re: how to reformat a hard drive?

Answer»

First, and important, thing to do is ESTABLISH whether you have a FULL version cd of your OS. Sometimes suppliers put a hidden Recovery PARTITION on the hard disk and supply just a recovery cd. If you FORMAT your hdd you may delete the recovery partition, then you would be up for big bucks to buy a suitable OS.

Take care out there! At least you've learned about Dell.

To format put your XP cd in the DRIVE and boot.. You might have to change the Bios boot sequence to boot from the cd first but try it before changing Bios, it might already be set.

Follow the on-screen prompts.

Good luck..and if this is your first format/re-install read the screen messages fully before responding to them. What are the issues leading to the formats? Details are important. If you just clean up the hard-drive and then MAKE a drive image you can restore easily from the drive image.

Solve : tv/video card problem?

Answer»

1st of all i really hope ill GET help from here.
i had Ati radeon 9600pro video card and Winfast TV2000 XP expert tv card...everything worked just fine.
then i bought new video card. GEFORCE 6600GT (gigabyte) and thats where problems STARTED. as long as i keep tv card out of pc everything is ok, but when i plug tv card in it starts using video card's resources and video wont work (its on minimum..res is 800x600 4b) :@
thats what it says under resources TAB:

*This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)

If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

Click TROUBLESHOOT to start the troubleshooter for this device.

i also got this from sumwhere:

Input/Output Range 03B0 - 03BB used by:
Intel(R) 82865G/PE/P/GV/82848P Processor to AGP Controller - 2571
Input/Output Range 03C0 - 03DF used by:
Intel(R) 82865G/PE/P/GV/82848P Processor to AGP Controller - 2571
Memory Range 000A0000 - 000BFFFF used by:
Intel(R) 82865G/PE/P/GV/82848P Processor to AGP Controller - 2571

..i wanted to change resources but i cant..cuz 'use automatic settings' check box is checked and its grayed out.
can sum1 help me out with that problem? ..i have searched over 2 months and nothing..no1 knows nothing about it.

oh and heres what i have done so far...tried other slots for tv card (only one slot for video).
uninstalled drivers for tv card.
took out sound card and put in tv card and video (video still didnt work)
disabled sum devices.

i would check with the mannufacturer of the TV card to see if this is a known issue and if it can be solved.Check this

Solve : Dvd Recorders Firmware?

Answer»

8-)Hey board havent been around for a while due to school.
but i wanted to ask how do i update the firmware of my two dvd recorders
which are
TDK DVDRW840G USB DEVICE
and
SONY DVDRW DRU-720A USB Device
i looked at other post in other forums and they say that if you dont DOWNLOAD the right firmware it can mess up your drive so that's why i'm asking if someone can help with the firmware for my drive.
Thanksif you are not having issues, there is absolutely no need to do this. It is a GOOD way to get a paperweight for no good reason.

If you do have issues, we can talk about those too.sometimes it will have problems but i guess its the media at times, i just thought updating was something good to DONOT necessarily. BIOS flashes have caused paperweights as well as firmware updates that were attempted just because they were new.

If you do not have issues that are specifically addressed with an update, I would PASS (except for Windows itself)!

Solve : Hard Drive install didn't go well?

Answer»

I installed a 2nd hard DRIVE (Seagate 250), and another memory card (Ultra 512) to my KMA AM39L-L board. Now when I turn the power everything powers up but....
#1 There is no "beep" as it is powering up
#2 The monitor which has been plugged in and out a NUMBER of times keeps giving me the self test
Needless to say I am STUCK!!!! Any SUGGESTIONS??Rule #1 - Only introduce one variable at a time. TAKE out the second RAM for now and replace firmly in slot. If it doesn't work take iti out for now. We'll deal with it later.

Is the new hard drive jumpered as slave and the original as master? If the machine now boots, is it seen in the BIOS?

Keep us posted.Thank you.
Took memory out.
turned power on... nothing..... :-?So if you leave just the old RAM in there and the hard drive not attached it works?

If so, tell us what happened with the hard drive jumpering. No, just hooking up the original HD it wont work. We tried all the jumper possibilities of the master/slave and the channel select or select. But when you turn it on we dont even get a beep. We have UNPLUGGED and replugged everything!! So you have JUST the original RAM and the original hard drive, jumpered as master, and nothing happens? If so, remove and reseat the RAM and try again. Now what?Tried that and nothing.

Solve : Hidden Partition?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I am going to get a bigger HARD drive,

The problem with the one i have is there is a Hidden partition that contains the windows xp disks.

I didn't get these CDs with the computer.

Is it possible to put this hidden partition onto a CD?
Or if not will i be able to remove it onto my new Hard drive through some sort of cable?

Thanks

R0SSAs far as i am aware, if that hidden partion contains information for xp recovery disks, then you will not be able to recreate it on ANOTHER hard drive or cd. But im not 100% sure. If you are getting another hard drive however and want to INSTALL xp on it, then if you have a licence somewhere on your computer then you could just borrow xp of somone you know and install that. Not sure about that but there's a ton of info on the net.

Here is just one.

Good luck...Ross, this is not a one eyed rant mate.... W2K rules!
Give it some thought.WOULD this method of copying a cd would boot form the startup to reinstall windows or formatt the comuter?thanks for the info guys,

Seems a bit complicated so i might not go though with it.

I suppose i could just KEEP both hard drives.

Solve : Need help IE errors windows not starting up etc?

Answer»

First I am sorry for the different posts just trying to put them in the proper place for consideration. I have a dell demension 2350 pent 4 1.8 ghz processor 1024 mb ram 30 gig hard drive and 80 gig slave drive. A few months ago the computer crashed or at least I think it did wouldnt boot after the dell logo just got a black screen....tried to boot from safe mode or any other mode I COULD....no dice so I took it to circut city and they pluged it in and said yep you gotta re format I dont know how to do that so they did it for me. of course when I got it home it was bare of every thing took me days to figure out every thing and probably didnt do some thing right cause I have had problems ever since. so now I keep getting the IE error: the instruction at 0x01633812 refferenced memory at 0x016f4918 the memory could not be read click ok to term then I GET a runtime error 216 at 01633812. then there is the problem with windows not starting takes forever and then I get the error sorry didnt write that one down and am not willing to SHUT off to get it I may never get windows to start again . So any hope? help? etc will be greatly appriciated, an sorry again for the posts.I would start with removing the RAM and reseating the chip(s). It's pretty straightforward. Do you know how to do this?

Afterward I would download and run memtest for a few hours. (Free at www.memtest86.com)

This seems like a memory error, so I would start here.

What problems caused the reformat in the first place?

If you post your service TAG (on the outside of the case) it would help with some of the work we need to do later for the other problems.

You said you had a shiny Windows CD to reinstall with? What version is it?

ok it first started with not being able to download macafe updates then the thing would not boot up couldnt boot from disk or anything just dell logo on start up then black screen. I have macafe and adaware spybot ccleaner and secrete maker running on the computer run them often defrag often as well. I have the windows xp home that came with the computer and yes I do know how to put in the ram so I will try reseating that. my service tag is 51vqg21 thanks for the help. I am not a complete dummy when it comes to these things but close....I know just ENOUGH to make me dangerous Here is some more info you might enjoy after further research:

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=259279

http://www.smartcomputing.com/techsupport/detail.aspx?guid=&ErrorID=21707

Is your McAffee up to date? If so, I would turn off system restore, boot to safe mode (F8 at startup before the Windows logo) and run it there.

I would try the free online virus scanner at www.trendmicro.com also.

After the system is clean you can turn system restore back on.

Thanks for all your help but I have one more question if I reseat the memory and try to start windows and it wont start then what?? thanksYou're no worse off than you are now and you will need to reload Windows.

Did you try ALL of the above suggestions?

Solve : Is this mobo fried???

Mobo MS6117 ver:1.1 LX.6 PII Ram UNKNOWN but think 128mb

Symptoms: At power up the PSU and box fans "kick" but do not rotate. No power is applied at any output pin.

PSU: ATX 20 pin connector to mobo. When pin 14 is shorted the fans spin normally and all peripherals are powered. All voltages check out to specs.

Any ideas on what to test next PLEASE :-?Quote

Will now be looking at processor, ram etc. as advised on another forum

Solve : Computer only plays MIDI sound?

Answer»

OK, today I went to play some music on my computer and to my surprise it would not play any of the sound files I have. WINAMP would not even open up! However, it will play MIDI sounds. This just doesn't make sense to me. I opened DXDIAG and ran a test on the "Microsoft Synthesizer" and "Realtek AC97 Audio" and got nothing. When I tested "Microsoft MIDI Mapper [Emulated]" and "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth [Emulated]," both succesfully played sound. I am a musician and use my computer for writing, direct recording, and mixing, so I need to resolve this problem as soon as possible. Please advise me on how to go about fixing these problems. Thanks for all your help! What your Computer Model and Spec

BumpQuote

What your Computer Model and Spec

It's T2596 eMachine
2.50GHz Intel Celeron Processor
60gGB Hard Drive

Sound: Realtek AC97 Audio
Drivers: ALCXWDM.SYS

What other specs do you need to know? Thanks for your timeBump lol!

ANYWAYS you did list your computer specs with AC97' I am assuming that you have a built in sound card to your motherboard.

Questions:

When did this problem started to happen?

How long has it happen?

What Operating SYSTEM do you have?

What did you do prior to this happening?

Did you install a new PROGRAM recently?

Do you get any error messages?

Did you check volume control and see if Wav is not muted

What devices are on your volume properties?
ex. Playback AC97
Recording AC97
My Computer-> Control Panel-> Volume Control

Questions:

When did this problem started to happen?
Yesterday afternoon.

How long has it happen?
1 day now.

What Operating System do you have?
Windows XP

What did you do prior to this happening?
Nothing, it was working fine, left it on overnight came home and tried to play a sound file, it didn't work.

Did you install a new program recently?
Nope.

Do you get any error messages?
Nope. Only thing close to an error is winamp will not open, the tab appears at the bottom of the screen but the codec will not appear.

Did you check volume control and see if Wav is not muted
Interestingly enough I did, and it wasn't. But, I checked again just now to be sure and when I open a sound file even if the Wave is not muted no sound comes out. Then when I move the Wave output level up or down sound does come out, but winamp still doesn't open up. The song starts from 0:00 as soon as I move the level and winamp remains tabbed but no codec. Talk about wierd.

What devices are on your volume properties?
It just has:
Playback
Recording
Other
and subcategories of each

ThanksHow about going into Control Panel, deleting all sound entries and rebooting the machine. Did that help?Quote
How about going into Control Panel, deleting all sound entries and rebooting the machine. Did that help?

I haven't tried that yet, but I'm not exactly sure what you mean. Can you please explain what exactly I should do?Control Panel/Device Manager and look down the list til you see and entry for sound (near the bottom). Click to expant the list for the sound items and then RIGHT click on each of them to delete. Then reboot. Windows should load the appropriate drivers.OK I did that, and now sound works with windows media player and in system sounds again. For some reason winamp is still messed up so I will try re-installing that tomorrow. Thanks for all your help.

Solve : building my computer??

Answer»

Im building my own computer. I have an Athlon 64 3700+ processor, 200GB HDD, ABIT motherboard, and 1GB stick of RAM. I HOOKED my pc up to my other computer's monitor so i could start installing drivers and the OS and what not. I started up my PC and it went into BIOS for about 7 seconds the the whole console shut off. When i started it up again the monitor wouldnt display anything.....i was thinking about it and since i dont have a heat sink for my CPU i thought that might be way it shut off itself. What do you think??? oh and which drivers should i install first? I have the HDD driver, the motherboard driver, and my graphics card driver to install....should i install one of these first or the OS first? thanks alot everyone!Sylent...... Well ...for openers , I wouldnt be powering up without a heat sink and CPU cooling fan ........ I would also suggest looking at the cd that came with the mobo ........on another pc .....it should give you the proper procedure ....... REMEMBER the old saying ...when in doubt read the instructions ......

dl65 Wihout a heat sink it will not run for long. Once you get that installed you can proceed, bu not until. alright thanks alot GUYS....i APPRECIATE it. Hi Sylent,
Hope you did not burn your CPU up. If you do put your heat sink on your CPU do a search on the web for thermal grease applications and get you some instructions. Its all over the web if not here. Just joined and read your post and did not get to SURF the site yet.

This site has some good instructions
