Solve : It's sticking out!?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 and have a problem with the PC card slot and release. The release catch/eject button thing was pushed by accident by someone and now it is stuck in the out position. If I try and push it in again it just ejects the PC card. How do I go back to having both card and eject catch thing safely tucked away in my laptop?

Ta from a real COMPUTER dumbo! (Although I didn't do it - I let my boyfriend USE my laptop and he went on a random button PRESSING frenzy trying to find the CD drive!).Try taking the card out, and pressing in the button. Now, reinstert the card WITHOUT touching the button.

Solve : sound card problems, can you help??

Answer»

I have recently had my computer WIPED and xp reinstated on the machine, but i dont seem to be able to get any sound. it says that no sound device is installed and i cant find any way of getting it to WORK. i think that the sound card is integrated in the system but i cant find it anywhere! would be very grateful for any HELP in locating it and getting it to work.If it is integrated then you'll need to contact the manufactuer for an updated driver. Like if it's Dell, visit Dell.com and check for drivers under your system's catagory.

Although if its from a major company like Dell you should already have a reinstallation disc that came with your set. Load the drivers from that, sometimes with XP home you need to ACTUALLY ACCESS the device through device manager find the unknown device (yellow ?) and install drivers through it with your disc in the drive or actually have it search the folder you saved it in.

Good luckRun Everest home and identify the motherboard make/model and you will also be able to identify the sound chip involved. Then we will go driver hunting.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

If this is a pre-fab system (Dell,Compaq, etc.) post the make and model number of the system.

We can't go further until we get some info.i have tried downloading the driver that i think is relevant to the system. the hardware that is on the device manager is either C-Media aC97 Audio Device or SIS 7012 Audio Driver. The computer is a Legend201 from what i can make out from the documentsSee the response above. We are just guessing what the chip is, and you posted two that are definitely NOT the same. There is a correct answer, but you have to post some info for help.

Did you download and run Everest? What did you find?didnt download everest, can you tell me the exact infomation that you require and i'll try my best to find it
does acpi uniprocessor mean anything to you?Thats nothing to do with sound...

What OS do you have? Win2000?

What manufacture did the computer come from?

Can you offer a service tag on the computer or refrence the manufacturer for exact info of the sound device?
Multimedia and motherboard are what we are after. It is on the right side of the screen when the program starts.Quote

didnt download everest, can you tell me the exact infomation that you require and i'll try my best to find it

Download and run Everest will give all the infos.

Solve : CD-RW problem?

Answer»

I have a Dell computer with Windows XP home edition service pack 2. I have a PROBLEM with my CD burner. After its burned a few song it comes up with a disk error. It doesnt do this for anything but audio. It burns about 2 and a half songs before the error pops up. I have a HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8481b cd burner. Thanks for any help. Also, it does it with any program i try to use. for ex. roxio, windows media player, realplayer ect. Thanks again.Has it always been this way? How old is it? Still under warranty? Has anything happened hardware or software wise? Have you tried reinstalling the burning software? More info, please.Yeah its always been like this. Its about 2-3 years old. I dont know if its still under warentee. Its always had this cr-rw drive and has never had a OS installed. hope this helps. After 2-3 years, no warantee I'm afraid.

Never had an OS installed? The PC always has an OS installed, but the CD-RW drive never gets an OS. It's simply a drive that contains removable data.

Anyway, one question must still be answered:

Quote

Have you tried reinstalling the burning software?

What's your service tag? We can see if it still has a warranty. It's a 5-6 digit on the outside of the case of in the bottom right corner of the screen if you press F2 when you see the Dell logo.

My Optiplexes all had a standard 3 year warranty (never had to use them though) so I'm spoiled.

How come waiting so long to fix this issue by the way? At worst a new drive for $30 should solve it. Quote

Hey ya' all! I have somewhat of this same problem...except when I try to burn cd's, the windows media player says the songs WON'T FIT! Even one song, it still comes up with WON'T FIT! The cd-r's I am using are blank so I don't know why the songs WON'T FIT! Although, I CAN save documents to the blank cd's... go figure, HUH?Nothingtogain244-

Although it is impolite to hijack a thread and the problems MAY sound similar, frequently neither they nor the solutions are.

Has yours always been this way? What has changed? Do you have a regular CD burning program? Why don't you post a new thread to address this as well as specifics on your computer, operating SYSTEM, service pack, etc. Sorry about this but i made a bit of a mix up. Its a Gateway not a Dell.I figured out the problem. All i had to do was change the write speed. Sorry for troubleing you guys.

Solve : Noisy TravelStar?

Answer»

My PowerBook has an IBM TravelStar 20GN (DJSA-220), and every once in a while it makes a loud "CLANK" noise. I've used two COMPUTERS with TravelStars from that family and they both do the same thing. But I was wondering what the noise is. Thanks!

-JohnThe clank can be the early signs of hard disk death. I would download the diagnostics from the IBM website and check the drives function pronto.Quote

The clank can be the early signs of hard disk death.

The last thing I want to hear about a drive in a computer I just spent $200 on...

I was reading around and I read that the noise is just the heads adjusting themselves. Apparently every drive that was made around that TIME makes this noise. Does anyone AGREE with this? The thing is, the drive is only 5 years old.

Quote

Can't. They don't have a Mac OS X version.

Keep the suggestions coming...
Thanks!

-JohnThe clank was a problem with previous Deskstar ("Deathstar") drives made by Hitachi for IBM. They frequently died a premature death. It was REFERRED to as a death rattle. Head parking is not that loud in normal drives, or those by other makers.

Solve : POST doesnt even try?

Answer»

NO good deed goes unpunished
I thought I'd help my fatherinlaw with his older 'puter Using asus p5-a -b, AMD K6-2 550 @ 450 mhz (too many errors @ 550 on three SIMILAR machines), I decided to help by installing a USB add-on card so his new copier/printer would connect to the computer. slick install. It picked up the printer and away we went, SORTA...
Half way through the secondary software installation, It freezes.
Now it won't boot.. Please insert system DISK when asked to boot C,A
during POST, it does not even try to detect the Primary Master.
BIOS recognizes it and under auto assigned the proper size, cylinders, etc.
Using a win98 boot disk, I can see, open .txt files. on C:
I looked up and executed Clear CMOS (CLRCLK in ASUS speak) with the battery out. Tested the battery, it is good. Then I treid the BIOS detect HDD utility. Results above.
The disk is a 20G and it reads (under dir command) 16G free.
These facts make me think formatting is not necessary.
I changed IDE cables
Once, under Win98 bootdisk, it told me C: does not appear to have a valid partition... , so I tried fdisk and it said C: was not a valid drive
Any ideas?
Without knowing what OS you are RUNNING, I'm guesing the drive is NTFS and win98 does not regonize it?

Solve : Dell Insiron 4000 processor replacement?

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspiron 4000 laptop that the repair technican says is going bad. If I replace the processor will Windows ME recognize the NEW processor or will I have to reformat HD with ME?Are you sure the processor is the only issue? That seems unlikely. The processor is USUALLY either bad or not. The motherboard is not a cheap thing for a laptop. How did you come by this INFORMATION?A technician at repair place that i have used for many years did "diagnostics" and said that the processor was the problem. More information...I ACTUALLY talked to the technician....they used a burn in utility and got a number of reports on the CPU that were not within range for the PIII chip. This is what they are basing the idea that it is the processor causing the computer to lock up and shut down. I pressed them and they said there "maybe" a motherboard problem but they cannot tell for sure until the resolve the issues with the processor....I SUSPECT the motherboard will be changed out soon as well.

Let us know.

Solve : NoteBIOS partition of file does not exist?

Answer»

Hi,

I recieved recently a laptop. As it goes through BIOS this message appears:

"noteBIOS partition or file does not exist
Save to disk FEATURE is disabled"

If I press a key and continue, MS Scandisk comes up and hangs for a few minutes, and then says something about an error on your hard drive. The windows 98 bitmap comes up andhangs for five minutes, and then says something like

"error reading drive c:
ABort/Retry/Fail?"

accessing C:\ and then typing DIR causes machine to freeze up completely after the computer has finished listing.

it is a Cedar Laptop (I don't know who made it) Pentium, 16mb RAM. No battery.

I assume making a noteBIOS file or partition would solve the problem. I cant re-install windows, SETUP hangs at the routine check.I just found a utility called PHDISK.EXE to remake the partition or file, but It won't work because I dont have a primary dos partition, apparantly, and fdisk cant write one because writing to the hard drive is disabled! arg!Writing to the hard drive is disabled?! Odd. This laptop may well be more of a curse than a blessing. But the first thing I would try would be to install a spare (or second hand) hard drive into it, for testing purposes. Taking a laptop apart is not a great plan unless you're reasonably confident in that area, but without opening it up, I think this problem may be hard to diagnose.

You could get a much better (working) laptop for very little money on eBay, incidentally.Just LET it go.The hard drive may be dead, there is no SUPPORT for this make, it only has 16meg RAM and who knows what else, etc.

Solve : Power Supply Cable?

Answer»

I just bought a enclosure and the power supply cable -> the yellow wire is out of it's place i really do not know what to do and i couldnt return it would anyone please tell me what to do? please.soom......Quote

I just bought a enclosure and the power supply cable

If theres SOMETHING wrong with whatever it is you purchased ....why wouldnt you return it .
The other thing , if you wish for a idea of what the PROBLEM is .......we really need to know exactly what your talking about.
You mention you bought an enclosure ....... an enclosure for what ? and ..... "the power supply cable " again for what .......

please let us know .

dl65 hard drive .. the power suuply cable that is in the enclosure i was trying to put the hard drive into it and while i was doing that i realized that the yellow wire isnt in its place " in the plastic thing "Push it back in until it CLICKS in place. Use pliers if necessary. Preferably do this with the computer unplugged... no no .. the enclosure is like the external thing for the hard disk drive... i just want to know what to do CAUSE im worry too much if its just SCREWED.. i bought a hard drive and then bought a enclosure so i put it in because i didnt have space in the pc.. when i opened the enclosure the yellow wire was more like removed from the plasticPlease post some photos of the enclosure and the wire. Here : Yeah, I thought you were talking about that kind of plug. The problem is, it doesn't look like the connector has come out, as I'd thought - it looks like it has sheared off. How are your soldering skills? You may be able to solder the wire back to the connector (and then hold it in place by wrapping the base of the plug with insulation tape). You'll probably need to strip the yellow wire back a little first.

Not a difficult job, but if you're not familiar with soldering irons and wire strippers, I'd recommend getting a more experienced friend to help.

Solve : LAPTOP HD RECOVERY?

Answer»

My daughter's laptop motherboard died...The unit powers up, but the error message is "INVALID SYSTEM DISK" upon booting up the machine. Can't get into the BIOS, however, and can't CHANGE the boot device(even tho you can get to the menu for it.... My question is this - is there any way to access C: without REMOVING the HD from the unit (since it does power up to some extent)? This isn't a big deal - she didn't have anything really significant that wasn't already BACKED up - but it does raise my intellectual curiosity...

Any thoughts on how this might be done - if it's possible - would be very much appreciated!

TIA!
NickWhy do you think the motherboard is dead and not the hard drive?Good question - It's what the repair guy told me - and I have a reasonably hi degree of trust that he knows what hes talking about

Unfortunatley, can't get into the BIOS - I can basically get 2 things: the INVALID mssg, or the small menu that gives me my choices for the BOOT device - which it will accept input, but it still gives me the INVALID mssg

Also, I can't get to the DVD/CD rom to try that...When I accessed the boot device menu, I changed the boot device to boot from thr dvd/cd, - it accepted the response, but it still came back INVALID SYSTEM DISK.

I suspect that what I want to attempt here probably can't be done - something like:
power the laptop up & attach it to antoher PC via say the USB or Serial Port, etc & somehow "automagically" have the laptop C: appear as some sort orf remote storage device...Don't know if this is feasible, of course. Obviously, If I could something like what you SUGGEST to work, that's much easier - but I'm not sure that I could get it to work...

Many thanks!

What if you boot from the CDROM with an XP disk in there? Or make a bootdisk (free at www.bootdisk.com) for Win98SE and see if it boots?GX1 there may be a problem.
This is a laptop, so making a bootdisk won't work unless they have a usb floppy drive on hand. i'm not sure, but if you try and get into the bios to make a CD a bootable device, it should be fine, just burn the disk and put it in.I have 3 laptops and they ALL have floppies. bootdisk.com also have CD ISO images. that's nice.

Solve : Need help upgrading processor.?

Answer»

Hey, my computer is basically an old HP 7955, *censored* *censored* thing, but weve been upgrading it over the years, it went from 256 mb ram to 768, a crappy graphics card to a radeon x850 pro, and ball mouse to opitcal mouse, and bulky monitor to flat screen. New sound card, etc the works, even a new 400 watt power supply with 2 fans, the only thing not changed is its processor/motherboard stuff. I am wondering what do I do to get my cpu faster, get a new processor chip? mother board? what? I am also looking not to spend a *censored* load of money, thanks. My cpu specs..

Also found,

Processor Brand Intel
Processor Socket Type mPGA478
Processor Family Pentium(R) 4
Processor Front Side Bus Frequency 400MHz

For my computer, and i was looking online at processors, and this one...

Platform: PC
Processor Class: Pentium 4 Processor
Processor Speed: 2.40 GHz
Processor Socket: Intel mPGA478 (478 pin)
Bus Speed: 533 MHz
L1 Cache Size: 16KB
L2 Cache Size: 1 MB
Limited Warranty: 3 Years (36 Months)

which is like 180 dollars, that i think i can get dad convinced to buy, but it says bus speed is 533 MHz, but my cpu says bus speed frequency 400 MHz, does this mean it wont work? I am just trying to desperately upgrade my processor so I can get my cpu running so much faster.

Solve : 2-7900gtx's and no room for audio?

Answer»

:'(Is there a way of connecting an audio CARD to my asus a8n 32sli-deluxe after having connected 2 ge-force 7900gtx video cards? These cards cover up all the pci slots. Or is there another board out there that gives me more options? This is my first build and I'm REALLY GETTING discouraged. I THOUGHT I did my homework and never thought that stuff wasn't going to fit. Components I'm using are; Silverstone TJ07 ATX Full Tower, AMD FX-60, 2G Corsair3500 PRO, 4 WD 5000YS RE-2 HD's in raid 0,1 ,CREATIVE LABS platinum pro audio card(maybe not), PCP&C 1kW psu. I thought I had the right board to accomodate all this stuff. Is there such a board or not?According to specs shown on newegg.com for that motherboard, it has:

PCI Express x16 2 x PCI-E x16 with SLI™ support at full x16, x16 mode
PCI Slots 3
Other Slots 1 x PCI-E x4 slot

That's a total of six slots. Now, if you've built this system yourself, you surely know that you aren't going to find motherboards with more slots than that. I haven't SEEN any of the ge-force 7900gtx video cards, so I find it hard to believe you have no room to install something in any of those PCI slots after installing your two video cards. You have two PCI slots between the top PCI-E x16 and the bottom one, right? So, how can you not enough room to install an audio card there?

when i 1st set this network up i could access files from my desktop with my laptop NICE and speedy, now it seems to of slowd down, folders can take up to 10 seconds to load? cant think of what it can be thanx for all your helpHave you scanned for viruses and SPYWARE? When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently? Have you tried turning off the router and then powering it back on (restarting)? (You should leave it off for about 20 seconds)

Flameyes iv done all that and its still the same! accessing the files itself dont take much time at all, its just viewing them, like when i highlite something on my desktop from the lappy it takes a thew seconds ? and opening folders with alot of stuff in can take bloomin ages! like 10 secs or so, i dont remember it doing this when i 1st set this UPWHAT has changed since then? What kind of protection? What kind of network setup? Etc?nothing that i know of. it just started randomly going slow, only change i can think of is a windows update, :-?Remember what you updated?

Flamehavnt got a clue, it was one of them auto updates. im starting to think its always been this slow but have only just started noticing it?

is it the same with U when u access files over a network?I have the same problem. The only difference i made was installing SERVICE pack 2 on one computer.
I think we might be imagining this problem.. maybe it has always been this slow. I tried placing the router higher, while trying to highten the connection and it seemed to worked.. accessing the folders still took ages but large files took less time. I dont know what ur configuration is, im tryingt to get help myself as well but ive tried all that was written here and there is no improvement that i can see. Also i dont understand how turning off the router for 20 seconds could do anything.
Thank you. What sort of router are you using?? (what brand)i found out it was going slow because the speed was only 12 Mbps thru my router to my laptop (from the desktop). To make it fast all i did was instead of using the router i plugged the ethernet wire straight into the pc ethernet socket and not the router and it now runs at 100 Mbps! only problem now is i cant get on the net when the pc is off (obviously) but accessing files from my desktop dont take forever now which is gggggggggggreat.

does anyone know if it was running at 12 Mbps because its all the router can handle or because some sort of windows setting was wrong??? would be very handy if i could get 100Mbps thru the router so i can access the net when the pc is off.

kind regardsIs your router capable of 100Mbps?im not sure :-? :-? :-? i havnt got a manual for it or anything, when i use everest it says yeah speed is 12Mbps but dont know if everest is saying that because thats what its set at?

Solve : maxtor 80GBs not detected nor....?

Answer»

i have a maxtor diamond plus 9 80GB hard drive, the issue is that sometime back it STOPPED being detected and showing up in BIOS / cmos but it STILL worked like a charm, but then later on it stopped working, now when i plug it in it dun even make any sound but it gives the blue hardware conflict / error screen no matter on which jumper settings i use it as a back up drive on!!!

can anyone TELL me if its possible to recover my data from it or get it to work, or any utitlity i can use to get revived?Download and run the free diagnostics from the Maxtor site (if it will run that far). If it is not recognized you would have to use a data recovery service (expen$ive). If it is you could possibly slave it in another machine.well THATS the thing, i plug in the hard drive, it boots and never even reaches the windows boot screen just hangs up before that and shows that blue hardware error screen! what should i do? i AM using it as a secondary master and slave as well as a primary slaveDistorted:

What does the Blue Screen of Death say? Does it have the word STOP followed by 0x and several numbers and letters? If so, what are these letters and numbers?

Solve : Why won't Montior turn on??

Answer»

Just got new computer and can't talk to tech support until monday so i was wondering if anyone new any reasons why my computer won't even display anything on the my screen its like the computer isn't even hooked to it :-/Bad connections or bad power supply are the most LIKELY reasons.why dont you try another monitor and see what happens?

R0SSThanks for giving me hints i thought it might be bad something! And i have USED 3 different Montiors Did you BUY the moniter from a store? , Bring it back maybe it is defective. Or bring it to a friends house and try it there. ok does the 4 pin power connection need something connected to it? Its a male connector and its on my motherboard which is a eVGA nForce-4 SLI Chipset Dual DDR w/7.1 Sound, Gb LAN, S-ATA Raid, USB 2.0, Dual PCI-E MB , Do the jumpers need to be covered with a little black connector? :-?Quote

Did you buy the moniter from a store? , Bring it back maybe it is defective. Or bring it to a friends house and try it there.
Didn't the OP just say he'd tried three monitors?

Personally, I wouldn't mess with this. You don't want to do anything that gives the company an excuse to say you've INVALIDATED your warranty. Just relax, have some chocolate, wait for Monday. Read a book maybe.

Edit: you were posting whilst I was editing. Those connectors are probably not your problem. Thanks Rob Will Do LOL

Solve : wi-fis?

Answer»

which is better.. the lower letter wifi's (g...) or the higher (a..)?
and what wifi would you recommend? (such as company, model, etc.)Speed does not necessarily go according to letter. A Wireless B for instance will go up to I think 11Mbps. An A or G will go higher. I can't say how much, becuase I haven't done much research on them. I think a B will go up to 11 Mbps. If anyone sees that as a mistake, please point it out. I know that a B is slower than A or G ANYWAY. As for companies, you will hear mixed results. So far, the highest rated companies that I know of are NETGEAR, Linksys, and Dlink. I like Linksys myself, but I hear Netgear DRIVES a hard bargain too. As for the model, that will depend on your budget. You will need to know what you WANT to spend on all this.

FlameI see.
I have a D-Link G, and im not too impressed with it.
but then again, I haven't experienced any others. Also, would an antenna (such as http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=315787&pfp=search&tabtype=pi#moreinfo)

help improve the connection (because i get disconnected a lot during gaming) and maybe the speed? For a little bit less you can have: http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=332968&pfp=BROWSE ... With the other one, it seems more like an off brand to me, and you would need to make sure it's compatible with your router. It looks like something from outer space as well With the Dlink, there is no compatibility worries, and I think it goes just as far. Also, what is your internet speed now WITHOUT an extra antenna?

Solve : Is it possible to record Video tape to DVD??

Answer»

I have several tapes that have been MADE over the years about coaching softball and I would like to be able to put them on DVD's so I could PLAY them for kids at the ball park on a laptop. Any Suggestions? :-?It can certainly be done. Ideally you'll need a decent video capture card installed in your PC, and the PC itself will need to be fairly high spec. Playing around with video is the hardest work most home PCs get to do.This is what I have:
3GHz with 2GB Ram and a Radeon 9550 with 256MB of memory. The HD is
75GB and I have a removable drive with 100GB. There is a CD Drive and a DVD R/W drive as well. Would this be able to handle the job?

If so where would be the best place to find directions?Yes that should be up to the job. Can the Radeon do video capture?According to the directions the s-video connection is for video in and video out. It ALSO states that the Excalibur Radeon card has viedo in capability for CAPTURING full motion or still image video. It shows multiple cable configurations. Knowing absolutly NOTHING about this I don't know what software would be used to do this. It may be already on the system and I am not knowlegable to know what I am looking at.

Solve : Evil Computer with Personality??

Answer»

Hello everyone. My computer, which is realitivly new, seems to have a lazy personality. It only boots up when it wants. I usually have to shut it off, and wait 30 seconds and BOOT up, and this happens several times. When it fails to boot up, it will either freeze at the bios(?)(Phoenix Award) screen, some screen after that I cant identify, and then the windows loading screen. IF it doesnt freeze at one of the screens, it will sometimes freeze at a black screen. Its not fun having to boot up 5 or 6 times just to use my comp...please help could be a multitude of things..

Bad HDD, bad windows install, Bios settings out of whack.. voltage jumpers on the board can be off..

Any more info on what it's doing or more indepth about the computer itself?Hmm, come to think of it, everytime I boot it SUCCESSFULLY, it asks me what settings to boot it on, safe mode, last known good configuration and boot normally. Could it be, maybe that it is caused by my anti-virus thing, AVG? It asks me to change something everytime I install/download...

as for the computer itself, its got windows home XP, a nvidia graphics card(forgot which one), 1GB RAM, 200gb hd and evga nForce4 motherboard

Edit: Also, when I do boot up, it will either give a short beep, a long beep, or continuous short beeps.Did anyone set a time for the computer to turn on by itself in the BIOS?

FlameEh? I dont think so... but what would that do?AWARD BIOS BEEP CODES

Below are Award BIOS Beep codes that can OCCUR. However, because of the wide variety of different computer manufacturers with this BIOS, the beep codes may vary.

Beep Code Description
1 long, 2 short Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information
Any other beep(s) RAM problem.

If any other correctable hardware issues, the BIOS will display a message.

So it might be a video problem? Should I reinsert the video card?Worth a shot...Thats true, It booted up fine just now though, so I'll see if it dies on me again later, and if it does, I'll reinsert.

Solve : RAM count @ post?

Answer»

What is the most likely cause when the RAM is checked more than once during POST?Some motherboards do MULTIPLE counts to check function. Is there an option for Fast Boot in the BIOS? What computer or motherboard make/model?In general, no specific problem.

Does it not indicate that the RAM is damaged in any way? This smacks of homework...I can assure you it is not. But even if it were so, would it truly matter?

Them who were once new are now smart mouthing new COMERS. I suppose that happens when PEOPLE get fancy titles and a system where people are put into classes.

I see this forum hasn't changed one BIT.Instead of getting distracted with this, did you find an option in the BIOS for fast boot,or similar? What is the computer or motherboard make/model?It does not concer a 'specific' motherboard, it is just that I have seen it happen on older systems with aging RAM and never quite understood wheter it was a bad thing or good thing.

Are you saying it depends on the motherboard?Sorry, GX1_Man, I need to resolve this real quick:

Marxist, I was in no way smart-mouthing you. I said what I said because we have had a huge influx of lazy school-goers asking us to do their homework for them, and that tends to make other regulars and me a little suspicious of questions about problems they don't have.

As for my title as an "expert": This is not an official title. This was a gift from another forum member celebrating my 14th thread in the FAQ Solution Database. That position of FAQ Moderator is my only official title. I do not CONSIDER myself to be a true "expert", but I do know a heck of a lot about computers, much of it learned through informal means.

Solve : Why won't it work????

Answer»

My forehead is red and flat from banging it on the table - Why won't it work? I've connected a laptop and DESKTOP with a crossover ethernet cable to enable file sharing and internet connection for the laptop. The laptop can access the desktop's files and has internet access - that's good. The desktop cannot access the laptop's files - that's the bad part. Both have XP. The desktop is RUNNING Zone Alarm. Having the Windows firewall turned on or off on the laptop makes no difference. I've run the network wiz on both. I've set certain folders on the laptop for sharing. When I go to My Network Places I can see the laptop but when I click on it the following message appears: Laptop is not accessible. You might not have permission to access this network resource. Contact the administrator of this network to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not found.
I know it's probably something stupid I haven't done but I don't think my forehead can take much more. What's the answer?
Windows file sharing is horrible. Particularly with XP Home. Is that what you're using?

Have you ensured you are properly sharing a folder on the laptop? If so, I recommend this: ensure that you are using the same username and PASSWORD on both machines, and ensure that the share permissions reflect this. If it still doesn't work, try going to Windows Explorer and in the file bar, type "\\laptop\share", where laptop is the name of your laptop in the workgroup, and share is the name you gave to the shared folder on the laptop.

Report back! We're using XP Pro. No luck yet. I have Administrator accounts with the same username and passwords on both computers. I've shared the folders. I went to windows explorer and typed what you said (with the correct names of course) and ..... nothing. It COMES up with a message saying windows is unable to locate folder. The laptop still has no problem accessing the desktop's files so I'm now CONFIDENT this is not a hardware issue. Any more ideas?? ThanksRepeat the above instructions with ZoneAlarm turned off.Nope. Still nothing. This must be cactus too.

Solve : Sony Vaio freezes?

Answer»

I have a problem with a Sony Vaio VGN-S360. Its my Sisters laptop, she installed a new video driver, because it kept saying something about a video error. After that all kinds of problems, it wont go into safe mode, it wont boot the logo screen. I turned it on about 20 time before the screen would ever even light up.

When I finally got it to boot, I tried the recovery f10, after it reinstalled an error came up saying "windows\system32\config\system" was missing or corrupt.

So I figured I would do a clean install of windows xp home edition. I tried all day to get the monitor to come on, finally the next day, I just tried again and whoa....it came on, so I PRECEDED to do a clean install........but half way through the install, the monitor went away, lights out.

That was yesterday...today I got it to come on, one time and it booted up normally and said continuing setup....the picture started fading, and vertical lines are on the screen now, but nothing. It keeps going from blue to white with lines, and rolling, then nothing?

Is it the monitor, hdd, mobo, power supply, what do I test to find out?

I figured there are people here a lot smarter than me, that could at least tell me, what I am looking for, where to troubleshoot? I have no clue?

THANKS for this forum

Does your sister have virus and SPYWARE protection? Is the laptop still under warranty?

FlameYes she has protection, and no the warranty is out. She said she should have known to keep the warranty.

What is your guess as to what the problem is?

Thanks for the reply Could either be a nasty virus, or maybe overheating, which would explain why it is constantly shutting off... Are the fans running ok?

FlameNot sure about the fans, but the bottom of the pc seems to get hot. I guess I would need to take the bottom off to check the fans, correct? Or just listen?

When I try to start the pc, I can hear the boot cd startup, but when I take the cd out and try to boot, all sound stops right away.

What seems strange to me, is it DOESNT even seem to be trying to boot. The sony logo has only started once today, and it tried to start windows xp, but froze up and then, the screen kept going to snowy white and then it would have vertical lines of different colors.

It isnt on long enough to overheat, of course it wouldnt take long I guess if the fans arent working. When you turn the computer on, you should hear the fans running as soon as you press that button. It would either be a soft hum, or a louder fan sound.

FlameIf you have never worked on a laptop, now may not be the time to start. Yes I can hear the fans running. While I was trying to hear the fans, I turned the laptop upside down, and when I tried starting it again. Surprise it decided to start up again, the logo screen came up and it said it is contining setup, it asked for me to insert the cd, and I did and it started loading windows again...........but after just a few minutes, lines started going across the screen and it started JUMPING and then it froze again

Now the screen is black again!!!

Thanks for your help, no one seems to know what is causing this, certainly not me I think you have a serious hardware issue, possibly the graphics adapter going bad, but in any case, reloading Windows doesn't appear to be the solution. Software doesn't fix malfunctioning hardware. I think the machine needs a repair shop, and you will not be able to fix this on your own. Sorry. Thanks so much to both of you for your help, I think you are right, GX1_Man.

Nothing seems to work and this morning when I tried, I didnt hear the fans come on, there was no sound.I would say that it's either the video card or the power supply. It seems to be a power issue if the fans won't come on. Good luck at the shop

Solve : CD r/w help please...?

Answer»

hello, i just purchased a new cr r/w from an internet shop.

it's a altec 48x12x48x....

here's my problem.. i connected all the neccesary cables and BOOTED up my pc.
when the pc is finally done booting up i noticed the "add new hardware wizard" on my DESKTOP with the message.. " Cannot intall the following device CD-ROM" ..."setup cannot find the specified file."

i check my device manager and the cdR/w drive has the Yellow Exclamation point next to it and says "device drivers are not installed for this device"

but here's the kicker...i can burn music cd's some how and it still reads what DISC i put in there. i need to figure out how to stop this annoying add new hardware wizard, and the little ballon in my taskbar that says new hardware found.

i have windows XP pro w/ service pack 2
Code: [Select]The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

and the deivce ID if it helps...
Code: [Select]IDE\CDROMRW-481248_______________________________1.07____\5&18BEF761&0&0.1.0

ANY HELP....would be greatly apperciated !!1
thanks - justinWas this a replacementfor or an addition to another drive? Are all jumpers set correctly?Did you receive a driver on CD or floppy with the CD-RW drive? Have you visited the manufacturer's website to see about downloading a driver? Might also check their website to see WHETHER they have a firmware upgrade for this CD-RW drive.yes it's a replacement.

the webstie i bought it off of calls it "Altec 48x12x48x"
but on the ACTUAL drive it say... "CyQ've"

no cd w/ driver r such, just a cd with nero
...and i'm able to burn cd with that nero, but no my old version of nero.

and the jumpers r set just the way that my old cd r/w was set..so

i checked the websties for both..and i did find something that upgrades the firmware

but still everytime i turn my pc it comes up (the add hardware wiz)

Solve : No sound (Failure at Step 19)?

Answer»

Turned on Dell 4700 Desktop today and found no sound from speakers with all types of sound file. With volume controls all the way up, I can just hear sound, very quietly. Through earphone socket sound level OK but sounds very weird with echo and strange distortion. Use SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio. All volume sliders and mute buttons checked OK. DirectX diagnostic revealed “Failure at step 19 (verification of user) HRESULT = 0x00000000 (error code)”. Cannot reinstall Driver as can’t find sound card installation CD with those supplied by Dell. I tried “Rollback” on Device Driver without Success. Any suggestions?Have you tried running a System Restoration?

FlameThanks. I'll try that next.Another solution: CHAINTECH AV-512 Sound Card - Retail. I've had one of these cards in my system for about a year. Tried Restore. No improvement.

Thanks for the other suggestion about getting a new sound card but I have a serious aversion to spending money uneccessarily, but I will bear it in mind as a last resort.Have you got a spare PC?

Thanks for the other suggestion about getting a new sound card but I have a serious aversion to spending money uneccessarily, but I will bear it in mind as a last resort.
Oh, I AGREE. I bought that card when I had problems with my onboard sound. Ohterwise, I'd still be using the onboard sound. I mentioned the card because it's an inexpensive one that I've been satisfied with. I don't really utitlize the full capability of it, since I don't have a full set of speakers for 5.1 configuration.I don't have another PC.

I don't know if it is connected to this PROBLEM but for some reason I had to reinstall an imaging programme from disc as the shortcut on my desktop could not ACCESS it. Please ignore this if you think it is unconnected.

Any more suggestions?Tim, can you set the record straight here? Is your sound onboard, i.e. integrated, or a sound card? The comment in your last post, "I don't have another PC.", implies that you have a sound card installed. But, you don't have another PC to test it in, as the other post suggested. If you have onboard audio, the absence of another PC is irrelevant.Truth is, I don't know if I'm using onboard sound. Flame's earlier comment makes me think I am.Just made a discovery. In CONTROL Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices, On Volume tab, I clicked check box to SHOW volume icon in taskbar. An error message appeared stating that the volume control programme has not been installed. On the Sounds and Audio Devices Audio tab, I click on sound playback, volume button, to receive an error message stating "cannot execute SndVol32.exe, use Add/Remove control panel to install". Problem is, this programme is not listed there.

I'm starting to wonder if my SndVol32.exe was infected by a virus and I eroneously deleted it using my anti virus software. If so, how can I get it back?Every Dell ever made has all the drivers available at the Dell website. Go to this page and input your model number on the right hand side and then you can choose your drivers for the operating system involved.

www.support.dell.com

OK. Done that. Still no change. Really pigged off now!

No.....wait. Ha! Cracked it! Opened sound and audio devices in Control Panel, clicked on volume and many more slider controls were available than before. Turned a couple of these up and bingo!

I'm baffled but relieved.

Thanks for all your input, people.

(i'm impressed with this site!)Thanks for posting back with how your issue was resolved.

Solve : Intel nor Abit can help....maybe you can...?

Answer»

Alright. Built a new pc about two weeks ago. Had some troubles with the CPU/Motherboard at the start, but nothing a bios upgrade couldn't heal. But for some reason, it's gone back to what it was doing before. I'll be lestening to music and move a page across the SCREEN and the system will half freeze. When I look at my CPU one is idle (or is handleing a normal amount of load, 15 - 50%) and my first CPU is peaking at 100%. My PF Usage is staying stable. Then I click on the application (winamp for example) to terminate it. It prompts with 'Terminating this application...blah blah.' As soon as that prompt occurs the first CPU idles and stablizes and the problem goes away. Then I move a WINDOW again and it happens again.

My build:
Abit AW8-MAX
Intel Celeron D 2.66GHz Dual Core
512MB highspeed RAM
CD/DVD burner
400W powerWhat malware/virus protection is being used? Can you check the running PROCESSES in task manager to see what is stealing your CPU?I'm running nortan anti-virus and ad-aware. I haven't done ANYTHING 'risky' though (except getting on the internet, but only on trusted sites).

My processes look like this:
System Idle (between 80-97)
Winamp (between 0-20)
Opera (0-3)
and so forth down the line of 0'sYou could run HIJACK This, and post a zip of the logfile.

Solve : CD Drive doesnt read anything?

Answer»

Okay,

Im doing this for a friend's computer. Its relatively new, an HP Pavillion 555e. The DVD drive WORKS perfectly, but the CD-R/RW drive, (which is a CyberDrv CW088D CD-R/RW) is driving me nuts. It doesnt read ANYTHING, no cds of any type, Ive tried. The weird thing is, Ive updated the drivers, and when I uninstalled then reinstalled the drive, I restarted and a little bubble came up that said "New hardware found" so I clicked the bubble and nothing happened. When I tried to burn a cd, it just ejected the blank disk I put in and said that I needed to insert a blank disk...needless to say this is how I found out it doesnt read anything. I ran some sort of check up on it with the HP Troubleshooting guide, and it said to update the drivers which I had already DONE! Device Manager says the drive is WORKING perfectly. The computer seems to think the drive is fine, no error mesages every come up about this and when I look in properties of the drive the status is "This device is working properly." Its ENABLED also, so thats not it.
Im thinking it may have never been formatted, which I dont know how to do. Is there anything else I should be looking at?

Please HELP!

Which operating system are you using? Do you have virus and Spyware protection? When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently?

FlameIf it's"relatively new" is it under warranty?Has this drive ever worked? Think WARRANTY. Operating sytem is Windows XP Home Edition, virus and spyware protection- no (recommendations?), the drive has never worked according to my friend and no changes minor or major have taken place recently.
So I suppose I should find out about the warranty? But before I do so, is there any way I can find out if its just some malfunction? It opbviously is a malfunction if it has never worked. Let HP fix what they sold him. You could replace the whole drive at your expense, but why?

Solve : Beep query?

Answer»

A couple of months ago I had to have my motherboard replaced. I now have AMD Sempron 2800.

Since the replacement there has been a STARTUP beep (single beep) as the WinFast logo fades - I BELIEVE this is a coded signal that startup is ok. The trouble is that I find it increasingly irritating and I wondered if it could be suppressed or ELIMINATED. Am I right in thinking that beep codes sound when there is something not right that NEED checking? - and would all beep codes be affected if one was altered in some way?

I have Windows XP SP2 768 RAM, and BIOS Phoenix 6.000

Thanks for any advice. You are correct in your assumption that some motherboards beep with a successful POST and then continue to function normally.

Solve : CD burner problems?

Answer» RECENTLY I have been having a hard time with my CD writer/burner. As it is now, I am not sure whether my problems are a result of software problems, or the CD writer itself. I suspect that it may be a problem with the ACTUAL drive.

I have tried to burn some music recently. I have been burning the discs at 1x speed to try and give them the best chance possible. I have also stopped working with my computer while the burning is in process. However, about 40% of the discs that I have burnt recently have had skipping and catching problems.

Also, before these recent audio CD's had failed, I had a few problems burning data CD's. I was transferring some music of mine that I had put into mp3's by writing the data to CD's. While reinstalling the mp3 data, I had trouble with some of the songs. Some of those also could not be reinstalled on the computer.

In all cases, when the skipping/catching problem arises, whether data, or audio, it stalls the entire drive and I have to manually eject the disc to close the drive window.

I have a dell inspiron 600m purchased in January of 2004. It runs on Windows XP. The CD drive is the original one sent with the computer.

Is there a WAY to test where the problem lies? What are my options? I really appreciate any help that anyone can give.

Thanks,
willieThe most helpful thing would be to try another drive in there and try that drive in another machine to see where the problem is. With a laptop this can be problematic. You didn't say if your warranty had expired, but especially if that drive has had some use it could be shot. They don't make 'em like they used to. Thanks for the reccomendation. If I SWITCH a cd drive, what things do I have to do? If I borrow my friend's can I just insert it into my laptop? Will I need different software for it to work? Can I guarantee the safety of my friend's drive?

Also, I have had a THOUGHT that perhaps it was issues with buffer under run errors. Perhaps my computer is not up to the task. Perhaps too many programs are running on my computer. I try to close down any other visable programs before I burn a disc, but maybe there are things running that I don't know about. How can I find this out?

Lastly, it sounds like you think my cd drive might be shot. If it is, is there a cd drive that you would reccomend for my system. I wouldn't mind one that could write DVD's as well.

Most of all, thanks for the help and taking the time to read and respond to my post. I appreciate it.

-willieIf your friend has a similar model you can just pop the drives back and forth. Look how they connect internally. What model does the friend have?

Solve : DVD-ROM/CD-RW Problem?

Answer»

I have had a problem with my disc drive for a while now, but didn't think much of it until now. My DVD-ROM/CD-RW all-in-one drive is unable to play DVDs, but is able to play any other regular CD. (Burned, music, games, etc.) I didn't care, however, because I have a couple DVD players around the house and would much rather watch movies on a TV than a computer screen.. but I just pre-ordered the new Final Fantasy XI expansion, and it is only being released as DVD-ROM.

When I load a DVD disc into the drive, the computer thinks for a while, then everything freezes. As soon as I hit the button to remove the disc, everything unfreezes and catches up to any buttons i have pushed (say I spammed alt-tab over and over, the computer will switch between all programs open until it finishes.)

I have LOOKED everywhere in the computer (Device Manager, System Information, etc.) for info about this drive, but it seems hopeless. I know that the driver is from 2001, which means it is OLD.. but I don't know which drivers to use to update it. The most useful info i can find about this drive in my computer is in System Information, the PNP Device ID says:

IDE\CDROMHL-DT-ST_RW/DVD_GCC-4520B____________1.00___\5&38663351&0&0.0.0

I only recognize in that string of whatever is the CDROMHL-DT-ST_RW which I guess means cd RW and the DVD_GCC which probably means dvd player.

I know a fair amount about COMPUTERS, but when it starts to get to the technical stuff, I have to look for help. By the way, on the front of the actual Drive itself is the LG symbol, and DVD-ROM16xDVD as wekk as 52x24x52x.

If anyone is able to help me at all, I would be incredibly grateful. As well, if it is just a driver update that is needed, or new firmware (unsure what this is, but SAW it talked about on a few forums before), please let me know if you know which LG drivers I should download for a DVD player/ CD-RW drive.

Thanks in advance.

PS - I have looked around the internet for different people with the same problems, and have only found people with similar problems, but who received no help at all. So I have done some research before begging for help myself. *bump*
Anyone at all know anything about this? Please help me out if you can.

Solve : warning alarm coming from console?

Answer»

Hi,
My computer is making a strange siren type noise coming from the TOWER. My computer is an Intel P4 2.4 with 256ddr pc2100. It has a CD/RW and a 20 g Western digital ATA hard drive. The noise sounds like some sort of alarm. I always shut the computer down when it comes on. I thought it was overheating, but I checked the fan and it is running and the casing is cool to the touch. I haven'e been able to find any reference to this sort of sound. Are there built in alarm sounds for failing componets? It happened a few times last summer and then started up again a few weeks ago. It's becoming more and more frequent. When I shut it down the noise usually goes away while windows is shutting down and before the computer actually turns off.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,
FrenchycatzHow strange. Does this happen when you perform a certain action? Which operating system are you using? Do you have virus and Spyware protection? When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently? Are you sure this noise is coming from the tower and not the speakers?

FlameYes I have spyware and Anitvirus protection and they are all updated and running. At first the noise was random. I defragged the hard drive and it made the noise. I can almost count on it to make the noise when I'm playing a maj jong GAME. It also happened once when I was trying to use adobe reader and the whole system hung up. Otherwise there SEEMS to be no reason. Strangely enough it has not gone off today. I use Windows XP home and have looked on their website and came up with nothing helpful. The alarm is coming from the tower. I crawled down on the floor and HEARD it. I also turned the speakers off to be sure. I use Firefox as a browser, but this has happened offline as well. I did have it hooked into a UPS but the batteries gave out on it and the whole thing is now on a six shooter til I can find a place to replace the batteries. I had thought it might be the cause.

Solve : no sound after reinstalling windows...?

Answer»

i reinstalled windows (windows 98 first edition), and the sound driver too (sound blaster audiopci), and i get no sound from all sound files. i tried to open the mixer from the taskbar while playing a sound file, and it shows nothing. what can i do...?Are you sure this is the correct driver for your sound hardware? Go to Start-->Settings-->Control Panel-->System-->Device manager. Does your sound card show up there? Are there any problems indicated?yes, it shows up under "sound, video game and controllers":

Creative Gameport Stick
Sound Blaster AudioPCI
Sound Blaster AudioPCI Legacy Device

there are 2 devices which seems to have a problem, but im sure its related to the problem. they are listed under "other devices", with a yellow QUESTION mark on the left:

PCI Communication Device
PCI Ethernet Controller

By clicking on "Properties", both SAY that "the drivers for this device are not installed"...oh, and im sure that this is the right driver... how can i check it?It sounds as though you have drivers correctly installed. On the audio mixer, do you have any channels muted? Are all the volume controls turned up? Are your speakers plugged into the correct socket? Are you sure they are switched on and working?oops... i meant "im NOT sure that this is the right driver"...

on the audio mixer nothing is muted and everything is up. im not sure that the speakers are pugged in correctly, but i dont think this is the problem because the audio mixer shows no activity. so maybe its something with the driver settings or something...?If it is the wrong driver it will never work. Download and run Everest Home and clearly identidy the sound card.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.htmlthank you...
i downloaded the right driver and it works now...GLAD to HEAR the problem is solved!

Solve : Increased RAM not being recognised?

Answer»

I reserected an old PC as my current machine CRASHED and burned. so I could get some info from my Hard Drive.

I was having an issue with my PC loading and getting an NTLDR error. Having read the through the FORUMS I purchased some new RAM, to see if this would solve the PROBLEM, which to my relief it did.

But the SYSTEM will not recognise the new RAM fully and thinks it is still running on the old RAM.

Please don't laugh to much but the old PC was running on 64mb (two 32MB SDRAM)

The new RAM I purchase was 128MB, to see if I could kick start my PC.

How do I get the PC through the BIOS/CMOS to recognise this increase RAM?

My motherboard is an old AMD KM6 (TM)hey this is probably useless but check the pdf for your mobo. some have memory limits, for example, my old one can only have something like 384 mb ram.Not all RAM is compatible, especially with older systems - double sided vs. single sided, inticacies of the motherboard etc. Just because it fits the SLOT is NOT enough.

Post you motherboard or computer make/model and specifics about what you got, but I suspect it is just incompatible RAM.

Solve : Second Opinion Please?

Answer»

Soyo motherboard with a 2600+ XP Barton core working fine for the last year or two. When pressing "on" today, no video at all (Monitor yellow light is on, instead of ususal green. Swapped video card with identical AGP FX5200, no difference. Monitor works fine with another computer. Another monitor on this computer gives identical results. Swapped out 2 known working power supplies and no difference. No attempt to seek floppy drive, access hard drive, etc. noted when POWERED on.

Computer was not opened or moved prior to this, no unusal activity at all. Meticulously clean from malware, running Windows 98.

I plan to replace CMOS battery in a.m. and pray over it, but would welcome all ideas, before springing for a NEW mobo. I am too tired after jetting in this afternoon to mess with it further today. My thoughts are the mobo. You know it's not the video card, you know it's not the monitor, you know it's not the PSU, it can't be the hard drive... what else could it be? All boards, chips and such have lives, as you oft recommend; likely the mobo. Though if replacing the CMOS battery works (strange THINGS happen with computers) I wouldn't complain.

Solve : Question Concerning AGP Cards?

Answer»

Glad I found this PLACE, 'cuz I do have a pressing question that I FEEL silly for asking about...but it's never come up until now.

I currently own an eMachines T2200 (See Sig)...bought it because I needed something quick and cheap, seeing as how I'm saving up to BUILD one from scratch. And so far, it's a decent rig, save for the Integrated Graphics Card.

It has an AGP slot, only it's 4x. I want something that I can GAME on...and most cards are 8x. But I've seen some cards that are written out as 4x/8x. Does that mean that it fits into the 4x slot as well as an 8x? I thought the T2200 came packaged with a PCI-E, but sadly that is not so, and I'm reluctant to buy a PCI standard card.

Thanks folks!Cipher...... check out the link ......it explains the differances.

Solve : Basic PC problem.?

Answer»

I have and Intel 4 desk computer thats about 2 yrs old. I am not very good with computers so this is pretty basic, but the tower PART of the computer constantly hums like the fan is on ALL THE TIME! It never has done this before, it just started recently. Nothing has changed, its not dirty or dusty, there are no program problems, but it drives me bonkers. In the past the fan (or whatever) has come on for a few minutes, but then you wouldn't hear it again for like an hour, now, like I said, its on all the time. Any suggestions?? Thanks.Have you made any changes to your system recently? INSTALL anything new? Running any new or additional programs? What about the external environment? Have you changed the room temperature? Do you have virus and SPYWARE PROTECTION? Yes, I know. It sounds funny for a virus or Spyware infection to be causing this, but it's possible, trust me. A friend of mine once had a virus that made the CD drive constantly open and close. Funny how these things work.

FlameThanks Flame for your prompt reply. We have spybot, ad ware, norton 2004 and the window xp firewall. No programs recently installed that coincides with this problem. Do I have to manually run spybot, adware etc for it to scan/fix my system or is it automatic? Because I have never prompted them to scan the computer. Norton does it once a week. Maybe thats an issue?1724....... Perhaps you should consider opening up the case and seeing exactly what it is thats humming ...... You probably have .....
a fan running in your PSU , at least one case fan , a cooling fan on the cpu and possibly a fan on your vid card .......

Try and track down the source.

dl65 As you can tell, I am not savy with this stuff. I just thought I had one fan. :-/ I will try that and see whats going on!If my memory serves me correctly, unless you buy the upgraded version of Spybot and Adaware, you must run the scans manually. I suggest running these programs. I would also be curious to see how your computer temperatures are looking. Here is a link to Everest Home Edition. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html ... I want you to download and install it, and once it is open, click on the Report Button. Once prompted, put the bullet point next to all pages, and let it make the report in HTML. This may take just a minute or two to complete after clicking on Finish. Once Everest says that the report is complete, click on the Save To File Button, and save to the desktop with the name of your choice. After that, please attach this file to your next message on this topic. I will then review it for you, as will other members. If you have any questions, let us know.

FlameOK, thanks..I will run those scans and download that report..Thanks! Sure thing. Just post your results and I'll get to them ASAP.

FlameSomething else you could look at is do you have anything on the tower that that would cause a vibration SOUND? also it might be a fan, your case may been clean and not look dusty but some fans (ball bearing ones) tend to get dust inside of them causing them to hum or fail.just check up all the wirings or peripherals inside ur pc or maybe they r only scrummbled that can cause noise in ur fan or in your computer...

Solve : Laptop Graphics Problem?

Answer»

Good Morning

For around he last month, when i start up my system, there is a green tinge to the the start up logo (Asus, normally white). When i get onto WINDOWS, the background has green in places, and the white words have green around them. It is not fully around everything, but shouldnt be there. I found i i just had to close my laptop, then open it to fix the paroblem.

It started geting a lot worse. I set my background to a picture of the 'code' of the matrix, and when i started the system, the black had turned to red, and it looked like lava was running down my computer .

I was worried, so i reformated my computer, wiping everything and restoring the original settings. I chnaged the back ground, and set it to 16 bit colour, hoping it may fix it. It hasent. Now randomly, the screen in places gets a green tinge. it is REALLY iritating.

Oddly, when i play a game or something in full screen, it doesnt happen. I thought it may be a virus, but i completly wiped everything, and keeped no back up data, i didnt need anything. I have had my laptop for around 10 months, and this has only started in the last 2 months, and now it is getting really bad, and really frequent. I dont know what the problem could be, a graphics card or something maybe it, but then why doent it work in full scren

If you can help, i would really appreciate it. I love my computer, and BUYING another ISNT something i can do at the moment. If you need me to upload my computer information, i can if it would be of use.

Thank you again for your time

Alixis ZephyrDetails about the system, maker, operating system, graphics adapter, RAM, etc. are helpful. No,make that necessary. I have attached my the system information saved by DIRECT x diagnostics. This is what I need to attach for any game problems, so i hope this is good enough :-/ Its a zip btw, I can't upload a notepad document.

Thank you for your time. I really appreciate this.

Solve : upgraded hardware having problems booting up?

Answer»

I upgraded my desktop with a new cpu, motherboard, DVD-RW, video card, wi-fi, and ram. I didn't upgrade my hard drive. Did that last year. It is a Western Digital 200GB. I went from a Pentium cpu to a AMD. I am having problem getting past the boot up. I am able to access BIOS set up but no further. Once it passes that the next screen reads "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key" I have tried to re-arrange the boot devices every way. I have also tried to boot from XP disk. Got any ideals? My ideal is to become the difinitive source of all computer knowledge. But my idea is that you NEED to set BIOS to boot from hard disk first. Check that; it's probably set to CD or some nonsense. Not your fault...

And sorry for giving you such a hard time. Thanks for the advice. I have tried CONFIG all of them in different order. Hasn't worked. What about the jumpers? Is the drive set to Master?I have check all that and they are all set to where they need to be. Just to cover the OBVIOUS: All IDE cables are connected, right? and the power? (Only reason I ask is because when I built my comp it wouldn't find my hard drive. Turned out to be a loose IDE. )

To cover the less obvious: What is your hardware setup? What all is promary master, promary SLAVE, secondary master, etc...Thanks for the help. I ended up just running an IDE cable to the DVD and A seperate to the hard drive. that worked Again thanks for the help.Hey, no problem. Post again when/if you ever have another computer problem. just check all the IDE or maybe ur jumper of ur hardrive...pls be patient about the slave and masters of the hardrive you CONNECT....or use other IDE cables for sure....PAS (Problem Already Solved)

Solve : Laptop screen blank - any ideas??

Answer»

My daughter has a Compaq Presario V2000 laptop, 4 months old, AMD processor, Windows XP, not sure on exact specifications. Tonight the laptop was working fine until it was left running for about 2 hours. When she retuned to use it the screen was blank and WOULD not come back on. It normally goes into STANDBY and when power button is pressed STARTS back up again. Tonight nothing.
I've rebooted several times - nothing. I inserted the recovery disc and restarted - nothing on screen so I turned laptop off and removed disc.
The laptop sounds like it's running normally. The battery was fully charged prior to going blank. Running off AC makes no difference.
It has updated AVG installed but I can't be sure how long ago it was run last.
Any ideas??
Please tell me it's not cactus - it has all her uni work on it and I just found out its not backed up
Are there any other machines that have caused more grief to the human race than computers??
ThanksMost laptops have some keyboard combination that switches the laptop panel on/off - particularly whilst working with an external monitor. Have you tried that combination? Have you tried plugging in an external monitor?

Cactus?I've checked the user manual and can't find any reference to a keyboard combination. I haven't tried another monitor - I'll do that tomorrow after some sleep.
Sorry - cactus is a bit of Aussie slang for broken, damaged, no good, etcMany laptops have a "function" or "FN" key, which when combined with another key (usually a numerical key) does various laptoppy (new word!) things. If you see any odd little icons on the keyboard, above the number KEYS, this might provide a clue. I'm not familiar with the laptop I'm afraid.

In the user manual, LOOK under "screen blanking" or "external monitor" or something like that, unless the monitor is also cactus.

(Did I use the word right?) Thanks Rob, I'll try pressing some buttons tomorrow and see what happens.
Hey, with a few more lessons I'll have you sounding like an Aussie in no time.Aw roight cobber, fur dinkum.sorry rob but that was crap ( im aussie as well )Aw... shucks...dont worry you'll get better.
