Solve : acer?

Answer»

I got my acer last November and have had a few problems with it I have not been able to get windows updates since I got it and I have had to have it in for repairs which took 4 weeks even though it is under warranty. It is now freezing and crashing frequently and even though I have enquired I still have not received my $100 cash back. Has anyone else EXPERIENCED similar problems and frustrationswpfish...... What kind of warranty do you have with this machine ? If its under warranty....... what was the $100 for ......?
Did you receive a original Windows cd ......with the operating system on it ?
Did you have SP2 installed ?
Were there any error messages .....when you tried to get the win updates .....
Did you purchase this machine new ....from ... a reputable dealer ? A brief discription of the computer would possibly help. All you have told us ..is that it is an ACER .....
It almost sounds as if there may be more going on here than your telling us.

dl65 I have an acer aspire 3000 I have an extended warranty 3 years but this excludes alot of things. The $100 is a separate thing I was offered this when I bought it new from a large electrical dealership. I did get an original windows cd with the operating system on it windows xp home 2002 with SP2 When I try to get updates I get message Files required to use Windows Update are no longer registered or installed on your computer.
When I had it repaired it cost me $253 there research log said:
//Line 1 : FRU Sub Code = CCO1 - MECHANICAL BROKEN, ACTION Code = SE08 - REPLACE FRU/ Line 2 : FRU Sub Code = MB01 - MAINBOARD CONNECTOR DAMAGE, Action Code = SE08 - REPLACE FR
whatever this means
I bought the unit new to hopefully avoid problemswpfish..... Has that laptop ever been dropped or received some rough handling ....... because from the repair info ...thats what it sounds like ......
As far as the other issue ... It sound like you have some necessary files MISSING or CORRUPT ....... perhaps you should save anything important and do a format and a clean install ...that should correct the update issue ....... its also possible the lack of certain updates are causing the problems .

dl65 thanks for your help i think u r right my daughter has dropped it (wont own up). I have just fixed the problem I think with the updates by downloading mozilla and then going to windowsupdate.62nds.com where I was able to get the updates 44 of them. Computer is better but still crashing (goes to coloured STRIPES like test pattern) is there any other action I can take to have the system run more reliably

Solve : new pc rebuild wont boot properly?

Answer»

Spec:
Mainboard: MSI Microstar KM4M
Processor: AMD Sempron 2200+
RAM: 2x 256 DDR 333mhz (only stick one in at moment and I have a 1gb stick arriving soon)
Hard Drive: Maxtor 80gb
GRAPHICS CARD: 256MB Radeon (not connected)

I have recently upgraded my computer with this new spec. I have tested the RAM and the hard drive on different computers and they both work fine. However when I BOOT up the machine makes one beep and then stops after the memory detection. I cant go into the BIOS because the keyboard does not function (either with PS2 or USB connection) and the CD-ROM has no POWER going to it. I have tried disconnecting the CD-ROM but still have the same problem. I have removed everything from the computer and put it all back together.
Please help :-/Well if you upgraded then have you tryed putting the old stuff back in? If its a new computer then its not your problem its the problem or the guy who sold it to you. If its a used computer beat the guy who sold it to you untill he buys it back. Now there are a couple of things you could try includeing CHECKING the keayborads PS/2 connector bor bent/broken pins. Also you could open your computer and set the reset jumper. If your computer doesnt have one then just remove the CMOS battrey. If you still have a warrenty send it back.I bought all the parts brand new and separatley over a SPACE of time. none of the pins are bent on anything.
If i reset the jumper NOTHING happens - no power at all.
Is this a really big problem if so which part of the machine?Maybe this is another power issue???
You say that there is no Power getting to the CD drive which does seem like there is a lack of power.I have just put my old hard drive back in and can now get into bios - just checking all of the settings before i try and boot up windows
Ok - so with my old HD it will boot up POST and let me into BIOS but it will not boot into windows instead it resets itself.
Any IdeasI now have it so that the new hard drive and cd-rom are recognised.
The keyboard works (both USB and PS2)
I can get into BIOS
BUT
it wont boot into windows - after POST it restarts

And I cant explain why the keyboard and everything else is suddenly being recognised
:-?
Sounds like your HDD is bad. Uhh lets see here...
-rumages around in the papers under his desk-
Here it is:

Ahem, There are two options you can choose in such a situation one of with requres renstalling your OS the latter of wich requires a hammer. Myself prefers the latter. Anywho, Pull all of the plugs out of your drives check for bent pins check for bad temination check for bad cables then put it all back together, reset your BIOS settings and redetect your drives. Then try booting. Rememberr this termination: HDD with your OS is the PriMaster the second HDD is the PriMaster. Your CD/DVD rom drive is the SecMaster and your CD/DVD-RW drive is the SecSlave. If you dont have a second HDD or a second CD then just exlude them from the list. I have had very bad expirence with placeing a CD and a HDD on the same chain. But should you need three HDDs or three CDs then I guess you can. If your computer still does not boot up then place the OS CD in your SecMaster drive and set your computer to boot from the CD. If your computer does not support this, you have a reall sad computer. In witch case set your computer to boot from the floopy drive and insert your EBD.(Emergency boot disk) If this solution fails to solve your problem please contact customer support.

This is writen on a tettered pice of paper under my desk.(Except for the "then you have a really sad computer" part)

Solve : Netowkred Laser Printer?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a Xerox Phaser 6100.
It works great over parallel or usb connection, but I can't get it to work over ETHERNET.
When I plug it into my router, lights flash slowly on the printer but nothing on the router, as it would for every other device.

The connection page settings seem fine and I've tried to use to MAC address to locate and set up the printer, but still no good.

It's as though the network card in the printer is not doing anything.
Or should I be trying something else?

Anyone got any ideas???
Thanks for your help
steve743........ Excuse me if I sound a little stupid.........but why are you plugging the printer into your router ? Usually the printer is plugged into the computer ...or am I really just having a moment .......LOL

dl65 This is a printer with an ethernet port - designed for plugging into an intranet, for workgroup printing.

Do you happen to know what the IP address is for the printer? Or does it use DHCP? Are you able to list the DHCP addresses assigned by your router?Hi yes it is a networkable workgroup printer. It has parallel, usb, and ethernet ports.
I've followed all the instructions and settings but nothing seems to even be aware of it existing when
using the ethernet port.

The printer can be set to use DHCP or manual IP. I have tried both.
There is a software utility which is supposed to set it all up if you type in the MAC address, but that can't find it either.

It probably means the ethernet port/card in the printer is broken, but how can I TELL, is there a way to test its ethernet connection?

I bought it second hand but its only 18 months old and been well looked after.

The first thing I would try is setting the printer to an IP address within your subnet. Then see if you can ping it from one of the other PCs. Do you have a crossover cable handy? You could directly connect it to a PC's ethernet port.Hi
Thanks for the advice on the cross-over cable, I'll give it a try.
I've tried manually setting the IP to a local one, but still can't ping it.

Also, the green led by the ethernet port on the printer blinks at a steady rate of twice per second.
No lights flashing on the router for the port.

My router gives the following details about my network:

Router
---------
LAN IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Default Gateway: 195.166.128.53
Primary DNS Server: 212.159.6.10
Secondary DNS Server: 212.159.6.9

Network
----------
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DHCP Server: 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.254

I have just reset the network settings on the printer to factory default.
Then selected DHCP and printed a connection page, it reads:

IP Stack
--------
Status: On
Source: DHCP
IP: 169.254.45.202 (I can't ping this)
Mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 169.254.1.1
DNS: 0.0.0.0
URL: http://169.254.45.202:631
MAC: 00:00:f0:ae:57:e0
WINS Name: XRX0000f0ae57e0
WINS Server: 0.0.0.0

UPNP
----
Auto IP: On
Multicast DNS: On
SSDP: On
SSDL TTL: 1

Port 9100: On
LPR: On
EtherTalk Stack Details: Off--------------------
Source: DHCP
IP: 169.254.45.202 (I can't ping this)
Mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: 169.254.1.1
-----------------------

With a 169.x.x.x ip it is not seeing the router/DHCP server at all. I would sugest setting it manually tp 192.168.1.99 and set the gateway to 192.168.1.1 and see if that helps.Aye, do what lex says. And ensure you're using a KNOWN good cable between the printer and anything you're connecting to the printer.

The people you bought this printer from - did they have it working over the network? Thanks for all your tips.
I have tried everything and have concluded that it is probably the printer's network card that is at fault.

I have just noticed that the ethernet cable I got with my ADSL router is a cross over and the one I got with the printer is a straight cable.
I have tried both cables with no success.
Could it be that using the cross over cable has damaged the printer?

Solve : is this RAM compatible??

Answer»

I have a Compaq PRESARIO and the type of RAM is DDR PC2100. Will a stick of DDR400 work if I add it? This is the one: http://www.pcvonline.com/productDetails.aspx?id=2288Nope.. sorry, your looking for DDR266 ram, which is 2100, DDR400 is PC3200.
Oh and TRY looking for ram on Newegg.com, its MUCH cheaper.go to www.crucial.com, input your model number and find out for SURE. Or go to the Compaq website. We would be just guessing otherwise.Well crucial said that PC2700 will work but why should I trust it?BUD, if you can't trust Crucial and would rather blind luck, go ahead!

Some Compaq's are very particular.

Solve : Graphic Adapter Error?

Answer»

Recently for some weird reason anytime I try and load a PC game like The SIMS 2, I get this error message http://img131.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc235&image=28226_ERROR.JPG

I have the lastest DirectX 9.0 installed and everything and my computer has never done this before!

Can anyone HELP me fix this please

~LumoWhat graphics card do you have? Is it DirectX 9 capable? Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but just having DirectX 9 installed in Windows does not necessarily mean you can run applications requiring DirectX 9. You must still have a video card that SUPPORTS it. I suspect I would have the same problem you're having if I tried to play that game. I have DirectX 9 installed in Windows, but I believe my nVidia GeForce4 Ti4200 video card only supports up to DirectX 8.That is correct. We need to know the graphics card to see if the SIms 2 will ever work on that machine, regardless of Direct XWell I have been playing the sims 2 on this computer for weeks...It was even working the day before all this started happening.

:-/Be that as it MAY, what graphics adapter is in there? Use Everest if not sure:

http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4181Well I'm not too sure my way around Everast...But I clicked On GPU and it says

nVIDIA GeForce

is that my graphic adpater...I'm not too sure :-?Where did you go to "clicked On GPU"? Anyway, yes, that's your adapter. You should see the full name of your display adapter in Device Manager under Display adapters. You can also get some info on it by running dxdiag (START, Run, and enter dxdiag in the Run box) and selecting the Display tab.

In fact, I suggest you run the tests that you see when you run dxdiag. Were they all successful?

Solve : Strange Clicking Noise?

Answer»

Ok i just found out to day that when i have my earphone connect to the computer and listening to it with NOTHING playing or only a few application runing behide the taskbar like (winpatrol, wininupdater,My network connections, aol and dsl modem), strange__i keep hearing click EVERY 16sec.

My operating system is Winxp Home edition
You're probably hearing the processor cycling at 2GHZ (or whatever) only it sounds much much slower because of all the dope you smoke.

I never had this sort of strange noise before.
So basically you say everything is okAre you too relaxed even to laugh at my joke?!

It sounds like crossover noise from some other peripheral - possibly this coincides with something on your network connection. In electromagnetic terms, the inside of a computer is a very NOISY place to be.

Certianly I wouldn't worry about this. Thanks I laughed at the joke Rob!Thank you!I just snorted coffee out of my nose. LOL ...... and I've got the munchies

Solve : Help my computer freezes?

Answer»

I have an eMachines T6520 AMD Athon 64 3400+ 2.4GHz / 1GB DDR / 250GB HDD / 16x DL DVD±RW/ 48x CD-ROM / ATI Radeon Xpress 200 / 10/100 Ethernet LAN / Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

anyway

the problem is that it freezes right all the time...for example, I run baulder's gate, an older game that this system should handle very well and during the intro movie it freezes...same with Halo PC and when burning DVDs

I have to reboot the computer by holding the BUTTON in...it is accompanied by the cpu fan constantly increasing in SPEED until it is maxed out

I've THOUGHT it may have been a video card issue so I put in an ATI Radeon pro 1300 card and it still does it...

HELP me pleaseHeat, Bad PSU and Bad RAM are the most likely culprits. What temps? What if you take off the side panel and blow a fan in there? Any difference? What make and model power supply? Free RAM test at www.memtest86.com

Solve : Video Card Issue...?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I bought some time ago a Radeon X850 XT... It used to run fine, all games at full detail, no overheating problems.. I even overclocked it a little bit. The problem is that today I arrived from the college, turned on my PC and then my eyes just went

There we some sort of wicked and colourful pixels. There wasn't any text at all. Only random colors flashing at the screen. I thought that the video card wasn't correctly socketed, so I kinda took if off and plugged it back in...

But the problem persists... So, is it really dead or is there still a hope?

Thanks =)Well if there are just colors on the screen I would suggest you try a roomates video card or get an old one to test it out first. My brother had an issue with his video card. Instead of flashing colors his screen there would be these color LINES and no matter what you do to them its always there.

We ended up reinstalling the graphics driver. Increase the refresh rate and end up shutting down and rebooting the PC 3 times.
*if you restart the computer does not power down the card.Well...

If it was drivers problem I would be happy, but I'm afraid that it might be something worse...

The thing is that I don't even get to see anything... It's just some random colors flashing around the screen... I've tried to unplug the extra power supply of the graphic card (you know that molex plug)...
But the colors keep flashing.. I'm afraid that the video card it's just good to go to trash!!

Someone knows how to reset a video card bios? It might work...

Thanks

EDIT: And besides, I don't know how some faulty drivers could influence a DOS environment...It sounds like a dead card. Sometimes it just happens, but if you have been overclocking it that can hasten it's demise. God *censored* it!

That just sucks.. On the other hand I got a x800 pro, but it has some weird lines too, but the images kinda show clearly... Just some random red lines... What can it be? Bad contact between heatsink and gpu? I'm saying this because it used to be watercooled before I took it off...

You overclocked them both? Well I did... Never got any problems, neither artifacts.. So I presume that the overclock was kinda stable and wasn't HARMING the video card. The x800 pro had like a +20Mhz overclock...

I don't know what to do, I have these two "dead" graphic cards, and I really need them to play World of Warcraft and besides I don't want to SPEND any money on a new one... Any hope on this case?whoa that's scary. if you overclock things that often, especially a video card you better have a spare SEALED in the box so you can take it out on warranty. Do not overclock the spare.

just an idea Looks like a bunch of junk DOS characters, like this, right:
[ch9688][ch9689][ch9786][ch9834][ch9608][ch9618][ch9675][ch9674][ch9658][ch9571][ch9688][ch9689][ch9786][ch9834][ch9608][ch9618][ch9675]
(or is that clasified as text?)

If so, then its your DISPLAY settings, not your video card. Can you see the BIOS?

Solve : wrong CPU speed?

Answer»

Ok here is another one i have posted long ago

My PC speed was at 2.8 ghz till i did something which i dont REMEMBER because it was long time ago and now it has gone down to 1243 ghz.

WHY ?
How will i getted back?

Spec:
Microsoft XP Home edition
Service pack 1
ADM Athlon XP 1243 Ghz
Motherboard chipset - nVIDIA nFORCE Ultra 400
System memory of 512MB (PC2700 DDR SDRAM)

ThankAccess your CMOS Setup UTILITY and check the setting in your BIOS for CPU speed. If you have a User's Guide/Manual for your motherboard, that would be very helpful. If you don't have one, visit the manufacturer's website and search for a downloadable manual. I dont know what to look for but i will give a go
I am not that good at hardwareThis may be helpful: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm. And this: http://www.cyberwalker.net/faqs/reinstall-reformat-winxp/enter-BIOS.html

I've experienced what you've experienced, more than once. My processor is an Athon XP 2200, with a standard clock speed of 1.8GHz. About 4 or 5 times last year, my System Properties panel would show a speed of about 1.5GHz. Every time, the cause was the same; the correct BIOS setting got lost.

Motherboards have a small battery on them that's needed for your motherboard to store certain settings while your COMPUTER is off. This includes time and date, also. If this loss of the correct CPU speed becomes a persistent problem, and you experience other SYMPTOMS such as loss of correct time and date, this is an indication you may need to replace that battery.

Thanks

Solve : KVM Switch?

Answer»

This is just out of curiosity, I use a KVM switch at work for our Unix system computer and my regular WinXP Computer (not supposed to but hey, can't surf the web on our unix ).

Anyways, sometimes when I use the keycombo the Unix system seems to change the way the keyboard works when I switch back and forth and the F Keys sometimes display weird ASCII symbols and the capslock is on when it should be off, this greatly hinder's US since a lot of our unix system uses the F Keys and the passwords aren't being recognized until we somehow randomly fix it. (a logoff and a BUNCH of key presses tends to fix it most of the time)

Does this happen frequently to anyone using Unix or a KVM Switch in GENERAL? or could it just be our Key Combination for the switch? (Scroll Lock, Scroll Lock, Up ARROW.)

Solve : no display or boot screen?

Answer»

My computer has been working great for several months, when one day I noticed the fans/HDs were running but the display signal would not return when I wiggled the mouse (optical; there was no red light underneath); the computer had been left running beforehand. Anyway, I MANUALLY reset it and it booted back up just fine. A week later however, the computer did the exact same thing, and now it acts like it is booting up (fans etc. start) but there is no display, every time I try. Also there is a fancy blue light that shines out the front of the case that also won't light up anymore.

I ruled out the monitor (using another computer). I pulled out my agp video card and tried the onboard video. No luck. I tried to reset CMOS by pulling out the battery for a few minutes. nothing. I disconnected and RECONNECTED everything. Nothing. Then I diconnected everything except psu, cpu, ram. And after than I tried a different cpu in the motherboard, and it still won't boot up . .

The only thing I can think of would be either the motherboard or the psu. Any suggestions?well you did a good job troubleshootin give yourself a pat on the back. good job
Thats everything I would have recommended.
BUT one las thing.
My aunt had this same problem her machine would boot but no display. i fix it in 2 minutes.

Turn your brightness up o your monitor and the reast of the stuff for you display to.
This is pretty much what I can think of since you did everthing elsehey subfusca,

when u said u tested the mothboard monitor jack, did u still have ur agp video card removed? because when some hardware is simply removed, and not uninstalled, it might give u a plain black screen. im saying this because, when i got rid of dial up, i simply yanked out my modem, and my monitor went black. i had to actually uninstall the modem first before removing it. with this being said, u might have caused a problem trying to solve the initial problem. u might WANT to put back ALL of ur hardware, even the video card, and then test the motherboard monitor jack. then if that works and ur video card doesnt, u KNOW ur video card is fried. unless uve done all this and i just wasted 10 minutes of my time. thanx guys. i actually tried the onboard video before i pulled the vid. card--which works fine when i switch it to another computer. :-?Quote

Turn your brightness up o your monitor and the reast of the stuff for you display to. This is pretty much what I can think of since you did everthing else

Disregard this rubbish.

It's down to most likely motherboard or power supply. Do you have a known good, spare PSU laying about to check with.Ok. It's got to be the motherboard. I SWAPPED the psu and the problem remains. After I replace it, I will let you know if it works.

Solve : TV CARD ??

Answer»

THANKS.....What I must to have pesent to get a TV CARD ?you might want to rephrase that. I don't know what your asking.Check the system requirements to see whether you have the recommended OS, processor speed, AMOUNT of RAM, etc. You'll either need a free PCI slot or USB port, depending on what TYPE of device you get, although your use of the word, card, suggests you'll be installing a PCI-type TV card.Soybean...thanks...God bless you

Solve : DVD RW Drive wont read discs?

Answer»

My DVD RW drive has suddenly stopped working, only a couple of days ago I burnt a CD and it was FINE. I have updated the driver, but still no luck.
Basically, the problem is that when I insert a disc the drive DOESNT detect it, i've tried VARIOUS BRANDS of discs but nothing seems to work. I also tried setting the drive to write slower and faster, but that didnt work either.I tinkered with the properties for a while but that didnt seem to do anything.
Thanks for any help.Use a CD cleaner in the drive. It that doesn't fix it, you probably have a broken drive.

Flameif its an OLDER monitor did you try and degause it?I have got it WORKING now. Clicked 'Control Panel', 'Display', 'Settings', 'Advanced', 'Monitor', and then reset the 'Screen Refresh Rate' to 60 herz. This gets rid of the interference.

However I am interested in your recommendation. What do you mean by 'degause'? How does one go about doing this?

Also another reply suggested downloading special drivers and updating the video card drivers? How do I go about locating these drivers (which are the right ones?)Quote

Ok I just started them both up. It's done the exact flaming thing. Arghh!!!! [smiley=angry.gif] [smiley=angry.gif]

I don't want to live with the aggrivation as the computer will eventually be over the other side of the house. And the idea is that all my sister needs to do is turn it on and she can print from there and go on the internet.

I dont get the fact that it is working but when you turn the computer off everything resets.
If you have netbeui configured, enable internet sharing, that will enable TCPIP to be used along with NetbeuI.

I did find out that you dont need to be assigned an IP automatically from your ISP. You can assign them staticly. So the above should work.

But your settings reset each time is weird. So just try stictly ASSIGNING IPS like the above show.Found the problem people!
Took it to a friend, he had a look. It turns out the USB ethernet adaptor is faulty. Borrowed a PCI one, works fine! remembers it's IP, shares things, ICS works fine!

Well that was the problem, I thought the first adive was a bit weird...Good for you for the SOLUTION and spotting the faulty "advice". First off buy a $20 switch and it will SAVE you all the headach. Plucg your modem into it and then let it assign IP to the other computers, very easy to setup.

Otherwise-
the Dynamic IP being given out by the ISP is for the modem itself not the computer. You do not even have to run the WIZARD if you fllow the post above by ROB.

sorry if I bored you.

Many motherboards enter the BIOS with Delete, or F1 (IBM) or F2 (Dell). Once you get there (and it usually tells you on the boot up screen) you can look around all you want. Be CAREFUL if you change anything!Theres a shedfull of utilities out there that will read bios info and dump it to disk in varius formats. No need to enter the bios at all to get info.

Solve : The New PC that Won't?

Answer»

I just built a new computer for myself. So FAR it has been the most troublesome peice that I've ever had to deal with. My build is as fallows:
AW8-MAX ABIT motherboard
Intel Celeron D 2.66Ghz Dual Core CPU
512mb G.SKILL DDR2 memory
MADDOG Radion video card
LITE-ON CD/DVD Burner
80gig Westren Digital HDD

The Motherboard seems to be very tempermental. I've had to call their tech support (they tried to tell me the reason for my pc shuting down was because me CPU was over heating at 255*C) a few times already. Now my video card seems to be screwing up. It's an OLDER card, I was hoping to save on the initial cost of the computer. When I use the DVI out as well as the VGA out the monitor blinks once it loads windows. My cpu seems to also be having some trouble. Nothing is running stable. One moment everything will be fine and the next it will sound like somebody slowed down everything. Even the music gets slower as well as page scrolling. Any ideas? How many fans do you have?

Flame3x 120mm

XP just reported a 'Device Failure' and shutdown on me, it says the device that failed was the video card. But that doesn't explain why the CPU is lagging so baddly.A bad vido card can cause ALL sorts of problems. If your CPU is at 255 degrees you really need to address that before expecting anything to run correctly, if at all.

Where and when did you make this purchase and do you still have receipts?Alight. Sense my last update alot has gone down. First off 255 degrees is pretty hard to get to in a matter of secounds (the plastic would melt...) turned out the guys over at ABIT Tech Support didn't know anything, got that fixed. The idea of a bad video card justified in my mind spending the cash for a new one, which I've installed (ATI Radieon X300SE). The systemed seemED a little more stable until it crashed again. It's down to just freezing up really bad. Could be a 64-bit CPU/MOBO running in a 32-bit world be what's hanging it up? It shouldn't be. I've been watching my system proformance very close and have noticed that just very little things like changing the track in Winamp take up alot of CPU power (4% when just draging the mouse around the screen, 8% to change a song track). When I get more then two things going at once is when it hangs up real bad. This system should be great for multitasking.

Bought from Newegg.com and yes, have all receipts (just like momma always said). What if you strip it to basics - MB/CPU/FAN, simplest PCI video card you can get and 1 stick RAM and see what happens? I would then test the RAM (www.memtest86.com) one stick at a time and make SURE the MB/CPU/Heatsink is correctly connected. if it works, add one component at a time till the GUILTY party is obvious.

You could always CONTACT newegg for an RMA before you pull your hair out.

Did you reuse some old power supply? If so, what make.model/wattage?How would I test without be able to boot windows? I know heating is no longer a problem, it never was, the motherboard was just set wrong. I only have one stick of RAM in currently and my video card, nothing else as far as PCI; I also have the DVD Drive and HDD. I've also come to find that it locks up so bad when one of the two cores from reason peaks out at 100% usage and the other for some reason idles...

Solve : F1 key on start-up??

Answer»

My PC company sent an engineer who installed a new motherboard. Since then I have to hit F1 each time on start-up. The CMOS battery seems OK as my clock/date work fine. Any ideas please? We'll need a hint or two about the computer and motherboard make/model. Can you call the repair guy? Can you post the exact F1 message?Sorry, here is more information!

I have a Dell 9100 with an Intel D 2.8 GHz, purchased last October. This is going to SOUND unhelpful but I don't know what motherboard they fit! Can I FIND out easily from the PC? The only information I got from "Device Manager" was ACPI\PNP0C)2\17. Does this mean anything?

It's a Dell so contacting anyone there is a challenge. I don't think I have any access back to the engineer that called, unfortunately. All Dell suggest is to reinstall Windows but this is something they suggest for just about anything!

The ERROR message is "Floppy diskette seek failure"

Is there any other information that would help? They didnt plug your floppy in correctly.
if they did then you just have to open up your CMOS and reset it.

Either way reset your CMOS after you plug the floppy in correctly which you can tell if it is by opening up the case and see if the floppy is connected to the shortest Flat Gray cable (IDE CABLE) If it is then just push it in somemore to make sure it is in all the way.

KK
First, lets establish if this PC even has a floppy drive. Many Dells don't.I know mine does not. :-/....no 3.5" floppy drive on mine either. Two CD/DVD drives but no floppy.Okay - so the problem is that the BIOS has been reset, and gone back to its default setting of looking for a floppy drive when booting up. You need to enter the BIOS (check your Dell handbook - or someone else here will tell you which key to press) and look for the option "boot up floppy seek" (or something like that) and disable it. That will cure your problem.F2 when you see the Dell logo Got a result! I have changed the diskette option in the BIOS to "off" and my PC boots normally. Many thanks to all for the advice.

I might even tell Dell so they can give the correct advice NEXT time!I'm glad you are all fixed and thanks for posting back.

Solve : 1500 Dollars Later....?

Answer»

Hello,

I recently BUILT a machine and have a few questions about the inevitable unforseeable screw-ups that come along with it.

1. I had to partition a 250 GB Western Digital drive into 137 GB and 113 GB respectively. The reasons for this are pretty silly, I think, so I'll skip that for now. In any case, I have another one on the way. I want to put them in RAID. Can I put two HDDs in RAID while they are partitioned? I obviously don't know the answer, but something tells me it isn't the best idea...

2. Since the first day I completed the build, the comp. has been suffering from random complete reboots, i.e. it boots DOWN to the initial start-up in BIOS and boots back up independently to WINXP as if nothing happened. I've noticed this happened when using my web browser (Firefox, but I doubt that little badass is the culprit) and when using Yahoo! Messenger. Recently the reboots have started happening when playing movies in WMP, and BF2 has been suffering load-up problems as well. The load-up problems may be UNRELATED, though. And twice, I've gotten a prompt in windows warning about a "Memory Sanity Check". This got me thinking the problem was with my DDR2. So I took one stick of RAM out, and have gotten only a single reboot since, whereas with both sticks of 1GB I would get between two and five reboots every day. I switched the sticks around and had the same result, so it seems neither stick of RAM was corrupted or that when used in tandem they tend to screw up. But since I got the single reboot with just one stick of RAM, it made me think it was a power issue. When I have both DDR2s in, maybe they're drawing too much power. The single reboot I got with just one stick may have happened because in that instance my comp was drawing more power than normal (VGA card, processor, etc.)

I have fully updated BIOS, and drivers and firmware are solid as far as I can tell. I can't think of any conflicting programs that may be causing this reboot problem, nor is the problem specific to any single, absolute program (because it has happened using three separate, completely different progs.) I think it's hardware doing it. And I think it's either incompatible RAM, or a power issue. I thought a 550 watt PSU would handle all my needs, especially since it's advertised as being SLI capable and whatnot. Anyhow, enough with the small-talk.

Additional note: GEIL RAM is not listed in my MBs manual as a "Reliable Vendor", and that may be true...but I've come to realize that ASUS seems to know very little about the products they release. The P5ND2-SLI Deluxe has some kick-*censored* capabilities, but they SEEMED to have released it WELL BEFORE working out any bugs, and do little about fixing them with BIOS updates....anywho, thank you very much in advance for having the patience to get through all that crap I wrote above to get to the end here. The hardware companies rock when it comes to innovation, but it always seems the end-users are the ones that end up helping each other out.

Thanks

I had a similar problem some time ago where the computer randomly rebooted. The problem turned out to be a difference between the MB manual and the actual motherboard as to placement of clock speed jumper settings. What this caused was overclocking of my chip. I reset the jumpers to achieve the proper clock speed and never had another problem with it. The script on the motherboard is so small that sometimes you need a magnifying glass to read it. Also your Main Processor chip may be at fault or not getting proper cooling.

Solve : HP 1600C printer?

Answer»

I have an HP 1600C new out of the box printer and have it connected to my COMPUTER with a parallel printer cable on LPT-1. I'm using Win XP Pro and the Windows printer driver as instructed by the HP web site. I have only a black ink cartridge installed - no color cartridges. Problem is when I print a test page using the buttons on the printer it prints out fine. However when I try to print anything from the computer it isn't "seeing" the printer. Printer is SHOWN as the default printer in control PANEL and drivers indicate normal. First question is: are the color cartridges required for this printer to operate properly? Second question is: If not, are there any solutions to this? ThanksSo it won't print anything at all? That's STRANGE. Did you FOLLOW all of the instructions in the user's manual on how to install this correctly?

Solve : ECC vs. Non-ECC PC1066 RAMBUS?

Answer»

Question: Can ECC PC1066 RAMbus ram be mixed with Non-ECC PC1066 RAMbus RAM as long as they are kept in their respective pairs?

I have googled this question and apparently I'm not the only one with this question. According to http://www.rdram.us/ you can mix the two kinds of RAM together as long as the ECC and ECC are paired and the non-ECC and the non-ECC are paired. But, according to http://www.satech.com/motherboard-memory-asus-motherboard-memory-asus-p4t533-motherboard-memory.html (a retailer of memory), this is not true.

I have also searched this forum for this TOPIC and it came back empty.

I have seen mixed results all over google -- who do you believe? I do not know the ANSWER.

Any memory GURUs out there?

I know what I would like the answer to be -- at least then I could believe that it's not my motherboard causing the problem...

Thanks! Is that the difference in the pairs of RAM you mentioned in your previous post that you thought were identical? Although not a good idea in standard RAM, frequently it will work, but none will function as ECC. RAMBUS had such a short and limited lifespan, and it's own intricacies that I am not sure, if that is what we are talking about. I think this is TOTALLY dependant on the MOBO design, rather than a function of the RAM itself.Thank you for your reply.

While I thought the 4 modules were identical, I should have put on my glasses and took another peek. I couldn't see the difference between the 8 and 6 when it came to KVR1066X16-8/256 vs. the KVR1066X18-8/256.

When these are all installed in their respective pairs in my GA-8IHXP (2.x) mobo, I receive this error once Windows has started:

BSOD
Stop error: 0x0000007E (0x0000005, 0x8054B339, 0xF7C8164C, 0xF7C81348)
then it starts the Dumping Phyiscal Memory to disk...

When I take out one pair of the RAMBUS (whichever is in slot 2,3), the computer will boot FINE. So, my conclusion after all this is that either the ECC and Non-ECC RAM are not happy living together or there is something very wrong with two of my RAM slots on the motherboard.

What do you think? Am I close in reasoning?Yes. I think the ECC and non-ECC mix is the issue, rather than the motherboard.

Is this the answer you WANTED to hear? Haha. Yes, I suppose that IS the answer I wanted to hear -- because I don't wanna have to go and get a new mobo or a new computer yet...

I suppose though one more question answered would ease my troubled mind. Will the GA-IHXP mobo (or any other board) RECOGNIZE memory that is only installed in slot 2,3 and not in 1,2? It would make sense to me that a mobo would look for RAM in the first 2 slots -- 0,1 -- that those would HAVE to be filled with RAM before 2.3 could be used. Am I correct?

Now, if I am correct on the previous question, then the only thing left to do is chase down some more RAM that is either Non-ECC or ECC and make 2 matching sets for me to install -- and try.

Cross your fingers. Did you look here:

Solve : Please help some kinda hard drive error?

When i shut down my computer and boot it back up It says decting ide or something like it then it wont go through at all. When i put in my xp desk i can reformat and reinstall. When i restart it does it again. I MAKE my small LIVING off my computer and really really need help here. Please email any replies or adivce you have to [emailprotected]update:

Now when i try and reinstall windows it gets to the point where its Examining the harddrive and then just keeps doing it. It wont go back or foward. The harddrive has worked fine for 6 months or so. And its still pretty new.update again now it finally picked up my main drive but isnt showing the second drive (where all my data is stored sadly) and is starting to FORMAT...... I could really use some help here....hey starcyxx, i gotta few questions.

1. what is ur operating system?
2. what are the sizes of the hard drives?
3. what is the brand and model of ur motherboard? (be precise)
4. what are the events leading up to this problem?
(such as replacing harddrives, harddrive swapping, etc.)

here are a few REASONS without knowing the full details...

1. hard drive is too big for mother board too handle
2. incorrect jumper placement on harddrive
3. power supply issue (no power)
4. bad IDE or SATA ribbon

*EDIT*
and please dont double post, never mind triple posting. just do as i did here with the big *EDIT* sign next time u have an update

and also, i didnt get what u were saying on ur first post. please be more specific and clear.I apologize for that, i dont normally use boards and arent up to date on it. Im sorry but i dont know my exact board. But its all be working for a while now. The power supply i placed in it, its close to twice what the computer actually needs. One hard drive is a Maxtor 60 gb that was in a DELL i had before the other is 200 GB Maxtor. How would i find out exactly what board that i have.

There was no major changes before this problem started happening at all.hmmm... the power supply may be 2X bigger than needed, but that doesnt mean it cant break down. also, u say u didnt mess with the internals of the computer. leaving 4 solutions i can think of...

1. try switching to differnt power supply jacks
(u should have at least 1 or 2 spare jacks dangling from ur power supply)
2. replace ur IDE or SATA ribbon going into ur harddrives.
3. replace power supply
4. replace the motherboard

i listed them in costly order $$$. 1 being the cheapest to replace and 4 being the most expensive to replace

also, the only way i know of how to check the product code/manufacturer of ur motherboard would be to open ur computer up and look for the sticker or stamp.

Solve : ethernet cards?

Answer»

is it FUTILE to try to install an ethernet CARD on a computer that is eight years old? It is a Pentium processor I don't KNOW the speed, it runs Windows 98 and has a whopping 32 mb RAMAny PCI ethernet card should work in a PCI slot on that machine. It is definitely NOT futile! Windows 98 and 32 meg RAM would be a more limiting factor. What are you planning to do.I still have a Pentium that's about 10 1/2 years old. I have an ethernet card installed in an ISA slot. This old machine runs Win 98SE and 128MB RAM. It has two ISA slots and one PCI slot. Since the PCI slot had a video card in it, I searched for, and found, an ethernet card for an ISA slot. It gets the same download speeds as my main computer, but is slow and choppy on rendering some web pages. I think ISA was limited to 10 Mbps and there can be DRIVER issues. Make sure you are using the correct one.

No, i haven't made any changes to my system. Is it a manufacturing glitch? If it is under warranty I would contact them pronto. Okay, some BACKGROUND: my system...

Intel P4 516 2.93Ghz 1MB C 533 FSB Socket 775
Intel D945PSNLK Socket 775 Motherboard
Corsair Value Select 512MB PC4200 DDR2 x3
Ultra 500w V-Series PSU
Radeon X700 128mb GRAPHICS card
WD 250gb HDD
generic DVD/CDROM
generic keyboard/mouse
M-Audio Audiophile USB sound card

Anyway, the other day I was using the computer when it froze. I reset, and although the comp itself booted, nothing displayed on the monitor. This happened every time I reset (12-15 times), so I powered down, turned off the surge protector, and went to bed.
The next day, I tried again, and it booted up just fine - until the Win XP boot screen, whereupon the monitor froze -- but oddly, the computer booted up as if nothing was wrong. Just, the display was stuck.
So I bought a new monitor. Still the same thing.

The longer I leave the power off before rebooting, the longer it GOES before the monitor locks up, thus why I'm suspecting the PSU.

And please, don't suggest things like 'did you try reseating -component?' or anything else obvious, because I've tried it. I have not tried a different graphics card due to me being kinda broke and not wanting to spend $200 on something if I don't absolutely have to. It's not a bad connection, it's definitely a HARDWARE failure of some kind. I get no error beeps or anything, so it's hard to pinpoint the problem. Thanks for any help.It certainly could be the power supply, especially if it is an off brand, or old, or sub-optimal output. I just got a new 400+ watt Thermaltake from newegg.com and revived a previously dead machine. Antec is a fine maker also. EL Cheapo non name I would not suggest at any price.

Is there anything that I can do to have both internet access and USB 2.0 ports at the same time?Get an external USB HUB which will plug into your one port and provide more ports to use, BUT you will lose some of your mobility.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.asp?N=2050400026+1228013606&Submit=ENE&description=usb+hub&Subcategory=26&Ntk=allHow will this allow me to have 2.0 ports if I am only plugging the hub into a 1.1 port? Am I understanding this correctly?OH, I see. You only have 1.1 ports on the notebook. You will need to get a PCMCIA card which has USB 2 ports on it, something like this:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=723748&CatId=511

There are a LOT of cards available. I am not endorsing this one, per se.

This may conflict with a wireless card, if present, space wise, so geometry on the card ports is important.

All I do then is just swap the Wireless-B card with the USB card when I was 2.0 ports, right.? If so, will this have any effect on my internet connection, besides no internet when I have the card out, if I insert another card into the slot for a SHORT time? That's correcct, but if the geometry is correct you may be able to keep both in at the same time. Unfortunately you will not know for sure unitl you get the adapter.

Solve : woefully ignorant?

Hi, I recently got an AMD Athlon 64, 3500+ processor. It's running great, but the info package I got with it was SLIM, and there's a couple basic things I don't know. There's a space on it marked "CF/Microdrive". I looked this up and got some info about a Compact Flash card. Is this something similar to a floppy disk?

And there's space for "SD/MMC/SM/MS/MS-PRO/xD". I have no idea what this is. Tried to search the forum, the net, without much luck. If anyone could please give me some basic info on these two things, or point me to somewhere where i could find basic info, i would really appreciate it. (previously I was using a 6 yr old computer with cd-r drive, floppy disk drive, so that's where my knowledge is at).I'm assuming you just bought a new computer, running an AMD Athlon 64 processor, which has a drive that looks somewhat like THIS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ShowImage.asp?image=21-104-108-02.jpg,21-104-108-03.jpg,21-104-108-04.jpg&CurImage=21-104-108-02.jpg&Description=MITSUMI%20Beige%202.0MB%203.5"%20Internal%20USB%202.0%20digital%20card%20reader%20and%20Floppy%20Drive%20,Black%20Bezel%20Replacement%20Included%20Model%20FA404M%20BG%20-%20Retail.

You've never OWNED a digital camera or mp3 player? Most digital devices use some kind of digital media card for storage (of pictures, mp3s, etc.). There are several types of cards used by different devices (e.g. compact flash-CF, secure digital-SD, MEMORY stick-MS, smart media-SM, and so on)

HOPE this helps. You probably already have this info from searching online.Yeah, that helps thanks, enough that I can figure out the rest. I've never used digital cameras, M3P players, etc., because I've been broke TIL recently.

Solve : Epson 836xl - lines in scan?

Answer»

I have two EPSON 836xl scanners. I stopped using one because it was leaving two light colored lines running the entire 17 inch length of the scans. I started using my other scanner, and it is now doing the same thing except it is only leaving one line (in the same spot EVERY time). Can anyone TELL me if it's the light doing it? Does it need replaced? I cannot buy a new scanner (nor do I desire to do so), so does anyone have any suggestions on fixing this PROBLEM?

Thank you in advance! Is there ANYTHING in your owner's manual about this?

Solve : s-video to tv problems?

Answer»

hi all, hope u can help

i'm using an s-video cable from my desktop pc to my tv (which is in another room) to watch movies etc (AVI format).
everything works fine apart from some movies, which do not appear, but only on the tv. when i open the movie on the pc, they play fine, but when i walk into the other room, the area of the screen where the movie is playing on the pc is blank on the tv.
at first i THOUGHT it was because the videos could be copyrighted or protected, but then i realised it can't be this, as my own home-made movies (also AVI format) play back with the same problem, and i KNOW that they aren't copyrighted or protected, as i recorded them myself. I have some other home-made movies on my pc which are in ASF format and they play with no problems, i get the movie at both ends.
I have tried using vlc player, media player, and winamp to play the movies, all of which give the same result. I'm guessing now that its probably some sort of codec issue, but i could be wrong.

here's my system specs...

intel p4 2.26ghz processor
512mb rdram
256mb nvidia geforce 5700le graphics card (agp)
1x80gb hard disk
1x200gb hard disk
1xdvd-rw
1xcd-rw
windows xp home EDITION (SERVICE pack 2)

thanks for taking the time to read this :-)

Solve : Printer help printing PDF files?

Answer»

Hi , How can I match up the pages in the tool bar to the pages of the pdf file ? The printer READS page 1 as page 7 . I need to print out all odd pages and then print all even pages on the reverese side of the odd.
My os is windows xp pro . the adobe is NEWEST adobe 7
My printer is a BROTHER MFC420 cn
Not sure if this workaround will help but try downloading & using Foxit http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php to VIEW, edit or print PDF files.
You will never go back to adobe. Quote

The printer reads page 1 as page 7 .
I don't know what you mean by that statement. HOWEVER, it looks quite possible to print all even or all odd pages, then flip these sheets over and feed them through the printer again to print the remaing pages. When you go to File, Print, you'll see a box labeled Subset. Click on the drop arrow and you'll see the options to either print odd pages only or even pages only.

Solve : fine lines at top of monitor?

Answer»

Recently my MONITOR has fine lines appearing just at the TOP of the screen. I have a Compaq 7550 using an Nvidia MX100/200 64mb video card. I tried CHANGING the refresh rate which worked for about 1 hour and then the lines were back. I also tried changing the resolution. I can't tell if it is the monitor that is messed up or the video card. How do I rule out one or the other?? :-/Try that monitor on another machine and try another monitor on this machine. You'll be able to tell where the problem is soon enough. Video card artifacts maybe? The above exercise will determine the source of the problem. im pretty sure its the monitor. however u should test it the way gx1_man stated earlier.I don't have access to another monitor and I live in the sticks so, I tried dropping my refresh down to 60. That got RID of the lines but I am sure it is temporary. I have a feeling it is time to upgrade the monitor. Thanks for your help. Too BAD I can't use my Pocket PC as a test monitor.

Solve : cd-rw does not work?

Answer»

Hello,
I'm in need of some EXPERT help.. I'm not really very knowledgeable when it comes to computer problems.

Here's the situation. My d:drive is a cd-rw. When I insert a disc of any type the green LIGHT turns to a flashing red and it does not work. I'm also getting a weird error message about Yahoo Music and on my Norton SystemWorks too.

I've tried resetting the eid cable. I went thru the troubleshooter. I've been to Norton's website for a scan and no known viruses.

Any ideas what to try next? How old is the drive? Sometimes they quit working even though there is a light or the drawer opens. Has it had a lot of use? Has anything else changed with the machine? Any monkeying around inside the case BEFORE the problem? The cr-rw is 5 years old and sees little use. I use it less than once a month on average. I opened the case about 6 months ago to upgrade the ram from 128 to 512 and I cleaned it at the same time.5 years is a long time for an optical drive. COULD you have dislodged something from it? When did it stop functioning correctly? Check all data cables for a firm fit.

A replacement drive is $30. A DVD burner is about $40. I did not realize that these devices are so inexpensive. Could I upgrade to a dvd burner? Is this a plug and play type operation? Here ya go: NEC 16X DVD±R DVD Burner Black IDE/ATAPI Model ND-3550A - OEM, $38.Just remove the old, plug in the new, set any jumpers (if needed) and install the software to make it functional. That's all there is to it.Thanks gx1_man and soybean, I bought that dvd burner that you recomended. I'm not sure what a jumper is but hopefully I don't need it. The dvd burner will be a GOOD upgrade. I'll post any other questions or I'll tell you when it's running again.
The jumper is a little connector which connects adjacent pins to create electrical contact between them. It's a feature on all hard drives and optical (CD/DVD) drives to control the master/slave configuration. This issue comes into play mainly when you two drives connected to the same data cable. Here's a reference which should help: Setting Hard Drive Jumpers. Also, the documentation with the CDRW drive you purchased will probably have info on this.It will probably not have any documentation if it is OEM, or any software. Just make sure the jumper on the new drive matches the setting on the one coming out.

Solve : My digital cam?

Answer»

Ok now I am not very computer savy so here it goes:

My girlfriend bought me a Digicam (fugifilm E510 w/5.2 mega pixels)
First time we WENT to "upload" the pics we took we took the cam pluged the usb cable in the cam then in the PC . Turned on the cam and a window poped up that asked how I wanted to save/dl or print the pics. The option we always picked was "save to desktop " and that was it. Just a week ago I found that it took little maybe 30seconds vids. SO I pluged it in the same way and it worked all fine. Now yesterday I went to upload some pics of some things I want to sell. and NO window pops up giving me any choice.

Any idea's ?

:-/ I am not sure on how to make the window pop up again as I do not have your kind of camera. You should be able to go into My Computer and access the photos from the camera as is if it were a drive. You will have to transfer the photos manually by copying and pasting the photos to where you want them.m4|\|7i5..... I'm not entirely sure I'm understanding you ..........
You use the term "upload" to describle transfering pics or vids from the camera to the pc ..... actually that downloading from the camera to the pc......
UPLOADING usaully refers to uploading or posting to a hosting service or the like ......
Then you mention uploading pics to some site for selling ...... normally you would go to that site ....go to the section where you upload pics or whatever and then that site would prompt you to browse for the pics you wish to post ....so you would select them and upload to their site.

I think thats what you are inquiring about ........

Yes sir

Again I am not very PC savy....

Do you have any words of wisdome for my dlilima?
m4|\|7i5... Four ideas come to mind ......
The first is that there may be something corrupt in the software that came with the camera ..... I would remove the camera software from your pc ....and then reinstall it .....

The second .... Check the UBS cable and be sure that the computer is seeing the camera when it's plugged in .

The third....... Is there a switch on the camera which must be in a certain position to allow transfer of the pic or vid clip......to the pc ?

Finally ........ Carefully reread your camera manual....because the Camera is NEW to you you may have missed something .

Let us know how you make out .

dl65 First off sorry about the wrong placment of this thread.

Ok for your first question
The first is that there may be something corrupt in the software that came with the camera ..... I would remove the camera software from your pc ....and then reinstall it .....

this I will try and let you know!

Second:
The second .... Check the UBS cable and be sure that the computer is seeing the camera when it's plugged in .

When I plug the USB into the PC it makes a noise , but it always did that even when it was working right.

Third:
The third....... Is there a switch on the camera which must be in a certain position to allow transfer of the pic or vid clip......to the pc ?

I have tried ALL the positions

Fouth:
Finally ........ Carefully reread your camera manual....because the Camera is new to you you may have missed something .

This my girlfriend will have to do cause she got the pics to the PC first.
Again I will let you know what happens when I reinstall.

UPDATE

Ok I found that on my computer that I have a "Digital Imiganing Monitor" Which allows you to decide where to put your PICTURES/ vids onto your PC. So now I want to post a video of something on a forum . And the only availible type's of uploads are GIF, and what ever else there are , but the vid I took is a AVI I belive. Is there a way to "change" it from an AVI to something that the FORUMS will upload ?m4|\|7i5..... I think that if you go to a upload site like photobucket.com and set up a free account, you can upload gifs ,jpgs , bmp and they will accept vid clips up to 3 minutes long as well ........ The vid clips are converted to Flash8 so as to be compatible with browsers....... then when you upload something it is put in your file and a link generated that you can post on a forum or in a email ..........

dl65 Ok Thank you , I'll try that. I use imageshack but I will try photobucket.
