Solve : USB - Disk in drive E is not formatted???

Answer»

Hi Guys,

I have a USB key with a mountain of data on it, most of it is backed up but there is still some important files on there that I desperately need and haven't backed up YET, (stupid or what)!! When I plug it into my computer it is recognising that it's there and the light on the key comes on, I am always pretty careful and remove it safely from the machine when I'm finished, however now when I try to open it up and view the contents of the key I receive a message telling me " the disk in drive E is not formatted, would you like to format now. Yes/No" I don't want to format it and loose all of my data. I have CHECKED the properties on the device and it's telling me that the device is working PROPERLY. The key is ALSO full with no space left. Please please someone help me - any suggestions would be most gratefully appreciated.

Thanks a million. What is the original file system that the USB drive was formatted?
FAT, FAT32, NTFS?

And what is your OS?DLoad and try Recuva on it to see if you can get any data back.
I wouldn't format it as your data will be EVEN tougher to get back.Link

Solve : add more memory in HD?

Answer»

HI! I have 40GB HD and I want to expand it. How can I do it , should I BUY another one HD , if ye s how to connect with this one.

Thank you!40 GIGS by todays standards is a SMALL drive. How much free space do you have on it? Also are you planning on ADDING more data quickly?

Getting a new drive maybe the answer for you. In most cases you can add the drive and than set it up in Disk Managment.

you cant physically make a drive bigger, you have to get a new one. clean the stuff off that one a little.

Solve : best ram for asus p5q-vm?

any opinions on the best ram (meaning what will have system performance the best, no gaming)
with an ASUS p5q-vm motherboard and core 2 quad q9400 processor.....
board supports PC2-5300, PC2-6400 and PC2-8500I have been USING and recommending OCZ RAM for over a year now...but you can't go wrong with Crucial either...If you travel to http://www.crucial.com/ you can see the crucial memory advisor tool, try using that.Quote from: kuszmania9999 on March 22, 2009, 04:51:30 AM

If you travel to http://www.crucial.com/ you can see the crucial memory advisor tool, try using that.

I believe he is looking for recommendations on what brand to get...Kingston user here. Both Crucial and Kingston have memory selector tools to help you choose the RIGHT memory. If you visit Kingston and find memory for your computer, you might then visit newegg.com and see whether they have it; they often have Kingston memory and may have a lower price than buying directly from kingston.com.thanks everyone..... i know the majopr brands to stick to , and im thinking of getting corsair......but the real question is it can use PC2 8500 or 6400........if i go with the 8500 will that be a faster system than 6400It's hard to see the difference between the 2...thanks again!but thinking more on that, then why are there the different kinds anyway?RAM speed increases are incremental...just like bigger faster hard DRIVES CPU's and other components.
The only time i actually saw a difference was going fromm 800mhz to 1066.

Solve : ghosted hard drive and won't boot?

Answer»

How can I get my new hard drive with all my old hard drive stuff on it to boot up again. I copied my hard drive to my new hard drive using Norton's Ghost 14.0, I deleted the old hard drive using Norton's PARTITION MAGIC, change my jumpers to cable select, switched order on ide cable and rebooted computer. I also have my hard drive partitioned for dual boot (1 is for my gaming, 2 is my main computer) and never had a problem with it. Now when I REBOOT the computer it lets me select which partition like normal but goes to a BLUE screen with the windows logo on it and does NOTHING. I am really hoping you can help me with my problem. Thank you in advance.

Sounds like the new drive was not prepped properly...it has to be set as an active partition and formatted to be bootable.
You may have to start over.
Also whenever cloning or ghosting a drive it's best to hook up only the cloned drive at first as master to make sure everything is in running order ...when it is you can then safely add your other drives.

Solve : upgrade of hardware?

Answer» HI,

i have a R42 IBM thinkpad with 256 MB Ram and 40GB hard DISK. Can i upgrade it to 1GB or more Ram and also to a 160GB or more hard disk.PLease do also let me know if I NEED any further changes in the hardware to make. Also what would be the approximate cost for getting it upgraded.I am a user from India location.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers..A laptop would be hard to upgrade.

But RAM would be easier to upgrade compared to Harddrive.

Note: Laptop RAM and desktop RAM is different, and so, when you buy the RAM, you MUST make sure it is laptop RAM.

Solve : Computer Won't turn on??

Answer»

So recently my computer would not turn on. So I automatically thought it was either my psu or my mobo. Since I was already going to buy another psu I just went for it and bought one. I installed it, and upon pressing the power button it fired up, I was happy.
About 3 minutes later, after I was already on the internet, it shut down again. I pressed the power button to try to turn it on and nothing happened.
So I tried changing sockets on the wall for some reason, and it worked. Computer came back up, I checked the bios for overheating but I was running at 34 degrees so I continued starting up, only to find the computer shut down upon window's startup.
I tried plugging the cord into a different socket and every time it fires up again for only 2 seconds now. If I dont change the plug then nothing happens whatsoever.
If I leave the computer alone for long ENOUGH, then I am able to use it for longer without it powering off, which I would BELIEVE would be linked to overheating but the temps are COMPLETELY fine.

Any IDEAS?

Please
Could be a SHORT in the power cord.
Try another one.

I have a DELL XPS laptop that has built-in wireless.

I reformatted it with Windows XP HE after I couldn't even start my computer up at all.

I was thinking once I got my internet up again I'd be able to figure everything ELSE out, but it's not letting me set up a wireless connection and not recognizing that I have wireless at all.

Is there a simple easy fix to this that I'm completely overlooking?

Solve : EXPERTS NEEDED: CPU Problem?

Answer»

Quote from: macdad- on March 20, 2009, 11:35:02 AM

This could be explained:
Possibly Electronic Noise, since the CPU is working so much that the BUS becomes very noisy(Electronically) which could spread through the board to your Sound Chip through the Power bus. This can't be fixed unless you want to do really hard mods on your motherboard(Soldering, Wires, etc.)

seriously, you're just making stuff up. crosstalk would occur regardless of how "swamped" the bus is- which means not a single computer made would work.

Crosstalk is a problem, but only to the engineers.. or I suppose if you make some offbeat modification.

Anyway, I guess I'll add something relevant-

you can sort the processes by CPU usage by clicking the CPU time column in the processes list- alternatively, you can try Process explorerQuote from: BC_Programmer on March 20, 2009, 01:04:33 PM

Thanks for the contribution and I'm aware of the CPU sorting system in task MANAGER. However, like I said, it's impossible to pinpoint one program because it's everything. Even task manager can take up 60%. Everything just jumps up and down.process explorer adds some more detail- for example I've had similar symptoms that turned out to be DEFERRED procedure calls. Could be a driver issue, too.

EDIT: although, come to think of it viruses can attach themselves to running processes...I'm running Process Explorer as we speak but it doesn't really give me any new insight. My CPU is around 5-20 right now and it's still just default programs popping up snatching away CPU. e.g. Firefox, Winamp and Process Explorer itself.Being a laptop it's probably a loose cold solder joint or other wiring issue inside the beast...but i'm just GUESSING since we've seen alot of that.I think it's my motherboard. It makes sense.

CPU is slow, everything is basically acting weird. I then tried installing 3 different kinds of Windows XP all of which didn't work because I got a BSOD about drivers, etc. I then plugged in my external DVD WRITER and played the Windows XP on that one. Installation did start this time but then told me Windows could not detect ANY hard drives.

Any ideas?Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 20, 2009, 01:04:33 PM

yea its kinda cheesy...and besides the engineers probably have some filtering system built into the sound chip.

you never know. im not saying crosstalk is what is causing his CPU to have overloading. im just saying it could be explained for the cirpping in his sound. It's all a matter of tolerances, isn't it?

Solve : Dead LCD monitor?

Answer»

HP a1310n tower running Windows XP, USING an HP vs17 LCD monitor. Turned computer off normally last NIGHT, but when I tried to use it this morning, the monitor won't turn on. Doublechecked the surge-protected power strip, power cord and connection to the monitor. Swapped it out, and the "new" monitor works fine, so it's not the video CARD or anything to do with the tower. The only sign of life is the power button turns blue for a few seconds when first PUSHED, then goes out, but won't light up again if the power button is pushed multiple times. Is it just a paperweight now, or is there some hope?
Thanks for ANY input...
Return the monitor for a replacement....Wish I could. Bought it in 2006, so I'm sure there's no warranty. you should still check it mite have the four year warrentyPaperwork shows a 1-yr warranty on the monitor. Out of luck.

Solve : just built a rig..... BUT IT WONT POWER UP!!?

Answer»

Hey, ok so today I decided to put togther a system real quick, when it was complete I connected the monitor, keyboard and mouse.... plug in the power supply, switched it on and hit the power button.... nothing happened. after checking all cables and connections tried it again, this time I NOTICED the first time I would push the button after I switched on the power supply, everything jumped. All the fans, and the FRONT panel LEDs, but only one LED on the motherboard stays on until the supply is switched off. I ran through the front panel buttons and LED connections on the motherboard and its all CORRECT.... Can anyone tell me if the problem is in the MB, the power supply, or just the power button? Hey, ok so today I decided to put togther a system real quick, when it was complete I connected the monitor, keyboard and mouse.... plug in the power supply, switched it on and hit the power button.... nothing happened.

FAILED.

But is could be the PSU. Does it provide enough for the hardware? And perhaps some things have not been plugged in correctly, and hence the jump. BTW, have you grounded your new rig?

Quote
BTW, have you grounded your new rig?

If it is in the case, is it not grounded?

I've built a few, and I've never had to "ground" anything...Ok I've found a way to get it started, but not without having the duel power system chip and the 4 pin pulled.... and then it starts flawlessly. (idk much about the "duel power" thang, its like a chip thats plugged in between tha psu and the back panel ports). I can however reconnect everything whilst its running and then everythings good to go, so........ WHATS THA DILL?! thanks for the help I checked on line for a dual power system chip, and couldn't find one. What does the documentation say about it?wellll I dont have any. I got all the parts from a few network server pcs from my dad's office thet they were throwing out. But I found out the motherboard is a GYGABYTE 8 sigma GA-K8NXP-SLI and the dual power system is in essence a built in surge protector. There is no such THING as a built in surge supressor on a MBoard...
Re-check all your connections; make sure the CPU heatsink combo is seated properly and double check all stamdoffs are in place...ok scratch all that... it works with tha durn thang in it lol it just wont start with the 4 pin hooked up....If you are plugging/unplugging things with it powered up you risk serious damage to expensive components...

Post alot more info on what exactly is in this machine...Quote from: patio on March 20, 2009, 06:59:16 AM

They were free I got it all sorted out now, turns out I had some pins miss connected on a 1394 plug in on the MB! works great now. Thanks for the help

Solve : Disappointed with Digital Audio on my Laptop?

Answer»

Dear All! I recently bought Dell's XPS M1730 laptop, running Windows Vista. It has Core 2 Duo T9300 2.50 GHz, 800, 6m, with 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD, Blue Ray DVD combo, Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC (sound). I'm completely satisfied with its performance for my usual activities (gaming), but I just developed an interest in creating DIGITAL Audio music tracks and am having problems with the sound.

Using software provided on Computer Music MAGAZINE's free DVD (energy XT2.5 Core), I've been able to create tracks. But the sound coming via my Bluetooth headphones is disappointing. I can hear pops and crackles and sometimes the music skips a portion of the track altogether. I don't think it's the headphones, because they seem to work fine with Cd's and other sound sources. Also the spec of the laptop means it should be able to cope with a couple of tracks of untouched digital audio. I just think that maybe my sound card isn't up to it.

Here is my question: If that is the problem, and given that there's nothing I can do to muck about with my laptop's sound device, is an external/USB Audio device my only other option? If yes, what should I look for?

Thanks for your time.Actually, i don't believe its the sound card. Have you TRIED some unedited music? and instead of bluetooth, use wired headphones and see if the problem persists. Try another music program.
(I like fruity loops)Quote from: JJ 3000 on March 22, 2009, 01:46:42 AM

(I like fruity loops)

LOL fruity loops???Thanks for your very quick response, iamyourmom!

I hooked up a pair of non-bluetooth headphones as you suggested; the sound quality itself was better - punchier, FULLER. But alas, the skips and pops were still there. I forgot to mention in my original post that the track I had made - a very simple drum and bass loop - has been left completely unedited.

I note what 33 3000 has said. Thanks for the suggestion, there!

Regards,
Robert.
In addition, if the sqeaks and pops are still there, try twisting the audio jack around (with the wired haedphones) and you might just get less pops. maybe. Its not the sound card for sure however also check which another bluetooth headset and test the same on another computer. Quote from: iamyourmom on March 22, 2009, 01:50:18 AM

Solve : Monitor Resolution question/problem?

Answer»

I don't know much about PC's so here goes. I hooked up a monitor on my PC and in the Settings tab I have a bunch of OPTIONS in the Monitor Resolution slidebar - I can GO very small down to 1600x1200. But when we hook up the same monitor to my son's machine - his resolution slide bar only goes to 1280x1024. We've checked the device manager and it's showing the correct monitor name each time. But for some REASON, the smallest resolution he can get is 1280x1024 no MATTER what monitor we plug into it. My computer changes resolution capability each time I hook in different monitors. Why is his "stuck on" 1280x1024 and won't go to the smaller resolution sizes like mine will?
This is simply a difference in computers. In this case, it's a difference in the video card or display adapter between the two computers.

Solve : Graphic Card Fan and temperature.?

Answer»

I've been checking my graphic card temperatures, and they seem pretty high to me. (88C after an hour of Crysis or Dawn of war 2). but 10 minutes after stopping the game and keeping it idle, the graphic card TEMPERATURE drops down to 53C.

Is there anyway to lower the graphic card temps? I've been using Rivatuner to make the fan SPIN faster, but it does not seem to affect the temps in anyway.

I clean the inside of the comp once every TWO months, and there is good air circulation inside the comp. Any suggestions WOULD be nice.

thanks. Add a new fan?Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on March 21, 2009, 09:53:44 PM

Add a new fan?

great. mate.

just kidding. I've thought of that, but there's not a slot big enough to be effective. For an 8600GT, 88C is pretty high, but not dangerously so.
You say you've CLEANED inside the computer, but have you cleaned the card itself thoroughly? Dust can build up inside the card's heatsink, and as the fins are tightly spaced it affects temperatures very badly.
Odd that increasing the fan speed does not affect the temperatures at all, are you sure the fan is spinning faster?
What case and cooling fans do you have at the minute, and how are they arranged?

indeed, netbooks are specifically made for work, especially for students. Asus 1000e is perfect for ms word and browsers.

I also use Netbooks, the Asus Eee PC 901, and it is perfect for school, because its light, and its LONG battery life allows me to use it for the entire day without having to BRING the AC charger. There is an Acer unit in that price range...same size...more horsepower.

Well, im stumped, on which?Quote from: squall_01 on March 21, 2009, 05:17:07 AM
on which?
regarding your problem DO NOT USE A VOLTMETER UNLESS IT IS AUTO RANGEING volteters have an internal 9 volt battery AND WILL KILL MOST OF THE INTEGRATED CHIPS mounted on the board . the two beeps you hear are possibly memory error you need to obtain the beep codes for your bios it shoul be in your board manual if you don't have the manual get a mate to go to the manufacturer WEBSITE ( open the case and check the model which is printed on the motherboard before doing this) and download a image and manual from the site possibly reseating the memory sticks could solve the problem but make shure you take static electricity precautions
hope this is helpfull

Solve : Monitor Problem??

Hello, I just bought a used desktop from microcenter. It is a HP Pavilion Media Center m8457c with a NVIDIA GeForce 8400 HD graphics card with DVI and HDMI ports. I tried to plug in my monitor in the back but there is no port that will work. Do i have the WRONG type of monitor or is something wrong with the desktop?

In the back there is a cover over the place where the monitor is SUPPOSE to be placed which says " Do Not Remove."

[attachment deleted by admin]You need a connector...

eBaywhich would be better a DVI or HDMI adapter? What's the make an MODEL of your monitor? If it's VGA and doesn't support DVI, or HDMI...the point is moot. In order to use DVI or HDMI capability...you need a monitor that supports it.

More...On the monitor says "nec multisync LCD 1530v" That's an SVGA monitor...it's not HD. If you want to take advantage of DVI or HDMI, you'll need an HD monitor.okay so i need to buy a HD monitor in order to get my desktop running?No...you'll need a connector...read my first post.

Solve : squealing computer.............Annoying!!?

Answer»

Anyone know why a computer would make squealing sounds? Basically, and time I move the mouse pointer, or execute a command the computer sqeals. It's not very loud but it's still annoying.. It spueals occasionally when the computer is idle, also.

I replaced the harddrive last night because I thought that was the problem, but that did not correct the problem. I checked to see if any cables are rubbing against the CPU fan, but everythinig there is OK.

Can you identify where the sound is coming from?

Also, what kind of sound is it? Is it a spinning sound, rubbing sound, sound of two things hitting each other? It's like a combination of Chirps and Squeals. It's sounds like it is something spinning, but I cannot comfirm that....I tried stopping the CPU fan with my hand for a SECOND and the noise continued, so I don't think it's the CPU fan. I put my ear up to the power SUPPLY fan, and it doesn't seem to be coming from there. There is NO DISK in the optical DRIVE, so there is no disk in there spinning.....I took a second LOOK inside the computer and can't seem to pin-point the noise. NO disk in the Floppy drive either. It is very high-pitch, but very quite.

The CPU and motherboard are brand new....just put them in about a month ago.....don't know if that might have to do anything with it..

I have had experience with squeaking sounds coming from my computer. It turned out to be the fan.

Is it possible to can take the computer out, lay it down on the floor, and turn it on to see where it is coming from?I'll try that tomorow...........been drinking Old English beer and now I'm pooped ......I'll post back later

thanksYou might swap out your power supply to see if thats the problem.....Power supply transformers will make a high pitch squeal, as do power supply fans and whistling capacitors inside the supply......or peel back the labels on the fans and add a drop of oil to the bearings.I swapped out the PSU and apparently it worked... I no longer here the irritating sauealing sound.

thanks all

Solve : Epson Perfection 1660 scanner?

Answer»

After years of having my Epson 1660 scanner and using it occasionally I've developed a problem. When I try to do SCAN I get the following message.

Unable to ACCESS the scanner because it is not ready or another application is using it. Please make sure the scanner is on and CONNECTED to your computer, or close all scanning applications.

I've TRIED reinstalling the scanner, run VIRUS scans, and Ad-Aware scan for spyware but the problem persists. What should be my next step?

Thanks!

Solve : Microphone/Sound card problem?

Answer» HEY guys!

Computer description:
Sound card: TerraTec Aureon 5.1 pci
Headset: Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset
OS: Windows XP Service pack 3
Ram: 2 GB
CPU: Dual core 3.00 GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

Just bought a new sound card (TerraTec Aureon 5.1 pci) and a new headset (Creative Fatal1ty Gaming Headset).
As I'm gaming a lot, I often talk to my friends using Ventrilo 2.1 and Teamspeak 2.
My problem is that when I speak they can hear me but they also hear an annoying beeping sound in the background. When I tried Windows built-in sound recorder I also heard the sound my friends was describing.

Any ideas of what it might be?

p.s Sorry for any misspelling or any grammatical mistakes, English is my second language d.s

Please check with any other application and then if not resolved please install the audio drivers.Thank you for the fast reply makshaw17,

I did as you told me and downloaded another audio recorder, audacity, but the problem is still there.
Then i picked up the LATEST drivers for my sound card and recorded again.I just tried with my old headset and I seem to have the same problem with them.
This leads me to think that its my sound card that is the problem.
Don't know if this HELPS but anyway...Okay... In this CASE contact the manufacturer and if in warranty get it repalced.Okay, ill see if I can get it replaced
Thx for the help!

Solve : Stupidly hard to fix?

Answer»

Hi am T and studying Software Engineer in Birmingham
I have some experience at fixing computers but not this one because it is the most unfixable computer
i have ever encounter!
I hope you guys knows how to solve this
---Laptop-------------------------
OS = Vista Home
Model - Invent
CPU - 1.7GB
GPU - AMD 64 - Athlon x 2 N
-------------------------------------

Thats will probably be all the information you need!

Problem: Vista Could not start up with the following Error

2/793 (_ 00000000000000000.cmf.ms)

Cause: This is cause by an service pack update

My solution 1: Trying to use Vista build in automatic system recovery.
Results = 16 hours it stuck on finalising restore

My solution 2: TRY to repair it using vista build in repair system but vista coulnt not reconise any problem
It said everything is ok and it cannot find any problems

My solution 3: booting on safe mode and other different mode
Results were the same, an error came up

My solution 4: Re formatt the dam thing
Got the boot disc for ubuntu and XP and try them both which mean that i try to boot it from the disc
i would use Vista disc but i dont have one but i am downloading it now!
The computer just ignor the disc even i went on boot order in BIOS oh i forgot that i try using vista recovery
disc but the computer just ignor it

My solution 5: Re formatt the dam thing but different method
Using both ubuntu and XP disc through an external CD drive and booting from USB port but the computer
would reconise it (not the CDs but the port)

I am trying to boot it from an external hard drive but i can INSTALL OS on my USB pen (kingston 8 GB) but the computer do reconise theres is a USB connected

i been on this problem for 5 hours now and please help me!!

Thank you if you have any sugestionwhy my laptop cant boot from disc even i already change the boot order?
Is vista has a secret F key that wil allo the computer to boot from disc?did you make it as a bootable disc?If the laptops BIOS does not support booting from a USB external device this will not work...
Why not backup your DATA and do a Repair Install of Vista instead ? ?try changing the boot sequence to a USB device.I boot xp on it and it works now but i want vista on it but the problem is my cd drive does not work.
I try to install vista on my USB pen but it doesnt workIf you have XP installed try installing the drivers for the CD/DVD drive and then check if its working.Optical drives do not need drivers in XP...
Borrow or buy a new DVD drive.
Or as i said check your MBoard manual to see if it supports booting to an external USB device...

Solve : Floppy disk-Please help?

Answer»

I'm trying to open up a document that I saved a couple years ago on a floppy disk but it just OPENS up as a bunch of symbols INSTEAD of words. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I really need this document. Thank youWhat program did you use to save this document?microsoft wordOK, what version of Microsoft Word, or what version of Microsoft Office, please?

To be more specific, do you know with what version the file was written and saved?

What version are you using, now, as you try to open it?

As far as the file, itself: what extension does it have? Is it a .doc file?

THANKS!Try it with WordPad...Start/Accessories...When I saved the document I was using Microsoft Word 97 and I saved it as a .doc.
I tried using the word pad to open it but it still doesn't work. The version I am using now is Word 2003.Word '03 ought open a Word '97 doc, as far as I know.
Does WordPad MAKE any part of the document legible?

(I am not being critical in any WAY. To me, the .doc should open.)

Just curious. Is Unicode checked by any chance ? ?"WordPad" and "Microsoft Word" are two different programs. Wordpad can be found in accessories, and can usually open older Word Documents.

Solve : I'm looking to buy a new cpu, need help?

Answer»

Can any one of u guy's go to this web SITE and recomd, how to configure this CPU for me?

http://www.ibuypower.com/ibp/store/configurator.aspx?mid=182

Any help would be apreciated.I'm sorry not sure if anyone else really get this ether. But your ASKING three things so what are you wanting to know. What is your budget?
What are you going to use the computer for?about $ 1200 mainly for online gaming.Do you need a monitor or keyboard or mouse?

Are you just wanting to buy the tower?

Do you have an operating system? Also what kind of Buss speeds would u recomend?depends on your needs, such as if you have any games that you can help us build off of so it can run them, running into that problem with my sister, but I recommend tring at least dual core or something LIKE that. Since it starting to be more common every were.yeah, what games you want to play?

AOE3 or WOW is fine with a 9500GT, Crysis is definitely not good at all on that card.

Also, what would you like to do with your pc other than gaming? Just wondering in case you can be modding your pc specs a bit so it's not all hardcore gaming but still decent enough.Quote from: kajun on March 15, 2009, 05:37:26 PM

about $ 1200 mainly for online gaming.

Well for $1200 you can get a pretty decent computer these days....

You just need to know where to buy from...

A nice little setup could be....

Q6600 or 8200 2.6GHZ CPU
Either 9600 or 9800 as there both getting cheaper
Some nice RAM, like 4gb,still cheap as chips
5400rpm HDD
Gigabyte motherboard << make sure its giabyte <<
all gigabyte motherboards provide BETTER performance over nearly all other brands

That'll do ya, its similar to my setupit varies at least figure out a cpu then go from there like you can get a board that cost 800 or one that is like half that from another site. Maybe if you used like pentium d or something thats a early dual core. Will also cost less know then it would have.and if you live in the USA, which I assume you do, you can check out newegg.com and I see some pretty good preconfigured gaming pc options for decent prices and on single pc parts so maybe that would help? pmf, geeks and tiger you can usually find things cheaper.

Solve : Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-C2502 //Won't read CD-ROMs?

Answer»

I've done some searching on the web and a lot of people have issues with this device, in that, it plays DVDs perfectly fine but when you insert a CD it attempts to read but gives the windows message about "Can't read CD it may be corrupt or need formating.. blah blah."
A few people, but not most, found the issue was fixed after the latest firmware was installed. I however cannot do this since the laptop I'm using doesn't have a floppy drive. I have tried to download the driver disk image and burn it ONTO a virtual disk which has an autoboot.bat file on it so OBVIOUSLY needs to be booted on start up.
I have ran the files in the autoboot.bat from the image (WITHIN windows) and get the following text:

// --- Copyright (C) TOSHIBA Corp. 1995-2002. All rights reserved. --- //
*** This Version-Up program was shipped

< Primary >
0 : (Master) Not ATAPI Device
1 : (Slave) Not ATAPI Device
< Secondary >
2 : (Master) Not Connect
3 : (Slave) Not Connect

Drive Not Connected

Is there any way I can install this firmware while the operating system is loaded or can I run some sort of boot from this virtual disk? And is there anything else I can try to fix the device? Any advice would be much appreciated, Thanks
Shandy.

I have an old DVD Rom that does that same thing, will no longer play or read CD's (only parts of them) but is perfectly fine with DVDs (or Windows XP CD? ) It's pretty much a shot in the dark and fingers crossed for me Hope you can get your working.

Peace.Use a flash drive to update your DVD ROM if your BIOS support booting to usb.
Do so at your own risk. Make sure the laptop is plugged in while you are doing this.

Have you tried using a laser lens cleaner?Ahhh yeah, Duh!
Thanks JJ 3000, I will give that a shot, I can't believe I didn't think of that

Your best bet is to buy them bundled together......This way you are pretty much assured that they are compatible.

more or less, you should have got a motherboard manual with it that should tell you in the FIRST pages of it, if not google the number on the board and LOOK for manuals. You can also go to the manufacture website and it should be there.http://www.cpushack.net/SocketID.html

Solve : Samsung SyncMaster 930B Monitor Viewing Problem?

Answer»

My SyncMaster 930B monitor stopped displaying. I thought the problem was my eGeForce FX 5200 PCI DVI video CARD because the fan on the card stopped working. I replaced it with a eGeForce 6200 PCI DVI video card (I only have PCI SLOTS on my motherboard). Still no display. However, when I shine a flashlight on the screeen, I can see the display barely. The monitor accepts both DVI and VGA connections so I changed the display setup on my monitor to VGA and connected it to the video chip on my motherboard, with the same result. I ALSO checked the display options in the menu. Brightness is at 98%. Apparently the problem is related to whatever process the monitor uses to light up the screen. Is there a USER fix to this problem, or is the resolution just to replace the monitor? You might have a look at this ARTICLE.....

Solve : Keyboard Stopped Working?

Answer»

This is really a doozie, I have a Dell Comp. and I am not real happy about that. Any way, I had a problem with my C D Burner so I called Dell it cost me 50 bucks to have them not fix it... I ended up buying a new Burner but before I did that the guy I was on the phone with had asked me if I wanted to purchase a extended warranty for a $150.00 I told him no, so he had me download this program that allows a Dell Assoc. to enter your computer and try to fix the problem well he couldn't fix it so I ordered a new one, and at this point my Key Board was working fine and had always been working with no problems what so ever. That night after being on the comp. and phone with the guy from Dell, I went to use my Key Board and nothing, I tried another key board and nothing, I tried my key board on another comp. and it works fine . I have tried to plug it in other USB ports and nothing. What really doesn't make sence is the key board works in the Bios. I called Dell and told them the whole story and they said it was a software issue and if I wanted to pay $140.00 they would fix it, I kind of told them where to go, cause it was working fine until there guy was all over in my comp.doing who knows what. I'm hoping some one knows what I can do without having to go through Dell. To anyone who cares about GOOD Customer Service then don't buy a Dell. Also if your wondering how I typed this I am using the key board in Accessibility in Win. XP not a bad option but not as good as the real thing.Thank you in advance.

Robyn
So what exactly is the problem?

But with the keyboard plugged in, right click on my computer and click properties. Then click on the HARDWARE tab and press hardware manager. See if there are any yellow ! beside anything. I told it was and STILL is a KEY BOARD problem; If you read my situation you would know excatly what the problem is I thought I explained my self pretty good Do you get it now hopefll If not it would be nice to have someone actually read it.Well for me i think the guy has something to do with this. By the way, why don't you try to go to my computer right click it then look for hardware, then click on device manager and see if there is some missing drivers. So that we could be sure if it is really a keyboard problem.I am sorry that this happened to you and I would like to help you with this. Firstly, PLEASE click on start and then click on run and type "devmgmt.msc" without the codes. You will enter device manager. Please check if there are any bangs on keyboard. If so please right click on the bang and then click on uninstall and then restart the computer. Also, please disable the on screen keyboard and then restart the computer. Please let me know if this resolves the issue. I will help you with this.I did what you said and there are no bangs on the keyboard, believe me I have been through all the TROUBLESHOOTERS for the keyboard and the USB and nothing has worked. The thing that gets me is no keyboard will work on my comp. but my keyboard will work on other computers, I think the guy from Dell did something, deleted a file or something. All the drivers are present and up dated, in the device manager it says everything is working. Dell also said something about it being a software problem, do you have any idea what he could be talking about?. I could reinstall my windows xp but i am not even sure that would work and I would end up loosing all my data. I have also tried system restore and that didn't work either. I really don't know what else to do. I hope you can help, and thank you.Since this is a USB keyboard, try a PS/2 keyboard, assuming your computer has a PS/2 plug, of course.

If not- or if the PS/2 keyboard doesn't work either, try this-

OPEN Device Manager (right click My computer, "Properties", Hardware tab, Device manager button)

In device manager, open the "keyboards" node (icon).

Right-Click and select "uninstall" (your keyboard might have a different name then mine, of course.) Also, if there is more then one item within the "keyboards" section uninstall all of them.

Once you've done this, reboot the computer. With any luck, windows will detect the keyboard and reinstall the proper drivers and so forth. If not, try to jog it's memory by unplugging the keyboard and wait until the PC makes a sound indicating removal. Then plug it back in. With luck, the computer will recognize the keyboard and you'll be good to go.

if none of the above work, it could be a USB issue. To try to fix that try uninstalling all "USB root hub" and "USB controller" entries in the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section in Device manager, and rebooting.

Let me know when you online... find me on yahoo with sameLooks like the issue is resolved for you... I am happy for that. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I am ready to help you with that.Yes it is resolved, I ended up going to a web site called Just Answers and they or he told me to try putting my windows xp cd in and boot from it and then instead of doing a reinstall to do a repair so I did and it worked. Thank you very much for your help I sure appreciate it.

Not programs..... but there are tools you can get from electrical stores... or dicksmith or what notThese happened because of bad capacitor, from the motherboard.Be prepare for a new mobo.
And try to take out the RAM and boot the pc, i you can hear any beep, the mobo is still useable, but like i said it just matter of time. How long since you ran maintenance on your system partition?

Is this a problem....should i leave it alone or should i change the settings, and if yes how do i do that?
thanksThat should be ok. Are you encountering any problems with it? i dont know if this is related, thats why im asking.......my 2 optical drives are not recognized ....i read somewhere if the clocking or voltage isnt set right you can have strange problems...?
thats true. but if there is not enough voltage, the computer will not boot What is the brand and model of your motherboard/computer and the RAM?

How bout the jumper?Master/slave have been set?You can experience all sorts of issues if voltages aren't correct.
Adjusting the voltage to 2.1V is easily done, and even if it does not solve your issue it's one variable eliminated.
To change the setting, refer to your motherboard's manual.guys....everything was working fine until i changed the ram and installed an evga geforce 9300 gt VIDEO card......did both of these t the same time......didnt use the drves for a couple days but when i tried they werent workng, have the yellow ? in device manager....
mother BOARD is dell oyc523 chipset i945p on NORTH and ich7/r on south, dell bios a03, the ram is set at 5,5,5,15,21

this was my backup machine until i shorted out the motherbord on my main computer....i then upgraded ram and gpu and mad this my main......but since it's acting hokey i dont like it or trust it......so i want to make this the backup again and i will build my own for a main in about 2 weeks......i'll get more bang for the buck and will be able to build a much nicer system.....

meanwhile , i was wondering if i should even try to get these frives working again, or cut my losses here and deal with it.....by the way, i also had did a reinstall of xp about a week before all this, everything was good after that until i did the upgrades......i also feel the machine is slower than what it should beWhat wattage is your power supply?..... Adding a new card and INCREASED ram will put strain on the power supply....Doesn't take much to fluctuate the DC power......the ratings are usually a bit high so your wattage may be lower that you believe.no idea...it is stock.....how do i find that outQuote from: king244 on March 15, 2009, 11:57:40 AM

Solve : Slower CPU into faster motherboard??

I have a laptop motherboard (FIC A360+) with a 133MHz bus. This motherboard has no adjustment jumpers.
I also have a spare Intel P3 CPU rated at 1GHz on a 100MHz bus, compatible voltage and FORM factor (1.75v and socket-370).

Can I safely PUT this slower CPU into the faster motherboard? If so, will the CPU CONTINUE to run at 10 times the bus speed and hence perform at 1330MHz? Are there any issues here I should be aware/warned about?

Thanks in ANTICIPATION for any helpful responses!
It should be ok. but not too sure why would you want to do that...

But no. it will not run at 10 times the bus speed. (I think)It may run at the new bus speed, been awhile since I've done that

Dear Friends
I used audigy 2 zs for five years but i got angry becouse it started crackling/popping in my SPEAKERS even when i installed kx drivers (though it doesnt crack when i'm not playing anything now). I have creative p580 speakers which all work ok 100%.I started using onboard sound and there was no crackling, but unfortunately there was only left speaker playing. As i changed left and right on my subwoofer, then only right speaker was playing, as i put headphones to green on the card also only left was playing. What is going on? The balance in sndvol32 is ok, and when i changed it to the right maximum the i hear nothing.I ticked in sndvol32 in advanced to 'rear speakers to line in' and 'central and sub to mic, but i get no SURROUND sound watching elephants dream which is obviously 5.1 and on creative 2zs with kx drivers plays all speakers, but with this annoying cracking. Please help. Is the onboard card broken? I've deleted it from my system and on restart i have sound so i guess xp has these drivers already but i installed newest drivers from the asus page - alc650_wdma341, and after running test also only right speaker played.
Driveragent.com says i have wrong drivers to both creative (which i now uninstalled i think using revo uninstaller) and onboard drivers

With XP, when I used printer, I received notification if one of the ink cartridges was low/needed replaced. This isn't happening with Vista - all I have is flashing light on printer. This only tells me that ONE of the inks needs replacing, but not which one. So I had to replace all four to continue printing. Anyone know how to get this info on Vista? Many thanksFrom what I have found about that printer on the Epson website it doesn't look to be compatible with Vista so that feature just might not work with it.

Instead of buying all new printer cartridges when the light flashes try printing a few test pages to see what color is low.

Print 1 PAGE in black, 1 page in Cyan, 1 page in magenta, 1 page in yellow and the one that doesn't come out right is probably the one that needs replaced. Plus I never change my cartridges when the printer tells me to I wait until the colors aren't ACTUALLY printing any more then replace them. I do this because I have had my printer tell me to change cartridges and it still print perfectly fine for about two weeks more with heavey color printing. Thanks for your reply. I don't change the ink right away either - that was where the notification was HANDY, cos you knew which was getting low, but there was always plenty to carry on for several docs. Thing is, if one runs out, the printer won't print anything at all till it is replaced. If you don't know which one, you have to do them all. I will try your idea of printing test pages. All I have been able to come up with so far is NOTING the date that all four were replaced, to try and get a pattern for replacing - but I am sure I will waste good cartridges replacing them too early! Luckily I get them very cheap! There are Vista downloads for your printer, including its driver, here: http://esupport.epson-europe.com/ProductHome.aspx?lng=en-GB&data=vRaxNXeC8zhTqd3mB6BavU5HxureXaU002FxGbRumTYYQQIU003D&tc=6#7Thanks for the info and the link. Hope it helps - its a little thing but I miss it a lot!
CheersLet us know.Yea - it worked! Thanks so much - I have my ink status info back on screen.
Many thanks for your help.Glad it worked. I guess I should have spent a little more time finding the answer I guess that is why Broni is the "The Man"LOL....I'm glad to see it fixed deedoll,As you have correctly noted with Epson printers when you are out of ink in one cartridge it makes the printer unusable until that cartridge is dealt with. This is a practice of the MANUFACTURER to make their money as the printers are basically free.Epson is one of the most restrictive on their printers to permit use when cartridges indicate being out of ink. However there are a variety of solutions to this that do not necessarily involve replacing cartridges (particularly with Epson brand cartridges). If you would like to learn how to overcome this by other means than replacing cartridges it would be my pleasure to advise you.truenorth

Solve : Question about serial ata power adapter?

Answer»

Good Morning!

I bought a Sony DVD/CD rewriteable drive DRU-V200S off the internet after the gentleman assured me my computer was 100% able to handle this drive. I just got the package yesterday. Everythings here. I am happy with it. What I am not happy with... is it says I need a serial ATA power cable *I do not have* and if not then I can purchase a serial ATA power adapter..which is fine. I have looked on-line even went back to the shop where I bought the drive and I actually do not know what I am looking for. ALSO I have no clue as to how to connect the adapter for it to work

Here is info about my computer.

System: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition V 202 Service Pack 3
AMD Sempron 3000+ 1.99 GHz 448 MB of RAM

I tried to find the other info you needed but just do not know where to find it.
I hope these questions doesn't sound too ignorant...I just do not know where to go from here. Thanks in advance for any and all replies.

Probaly looks like this. "Serial ATA" is USUALLY abbreviated to "SATA". This is a SATA power adapter cable. It allows you to take power from a PATA (IDE) power connector.

That's what it looks like inside my computer... well it is connected to a long belt looking thing...but my problem is the back of the DVD/CD drive it has 2 long plugs... the one you show below will not connect to the drive...Do I need some kind of adapter to connect to mine...like your picture below to the plug into my new drive?

The black connector on the left is a SATA power connector. The white connector on the right is a PATA power connector.

Maybe this will help better explain what I am needing/or asking.

Here is a pic of the back of the drive

And I have the image here that you posted in mine...

which I can not see how it hooks up to the drive. Or maybe it isn't as hard as I am making it out to be? How would I plug in the drive with what I have?
Look again at that connector on the back of the drive......that's NOT just ONE plug, it's TWO.
the wide one on the left is the power connector and the shorter one to the right of it is the SATA data cable.

You DO have SATA ports on your motherboard, don't you?

If not then you bought the wrong drive. You will need an IDE drive, NOT a SATA drive.

Cheers!

I did wonder about this.
Ok next silly question....how do I find out if I have SATA ports on my motherboard?Quote from: Rhonda_IN on March 20, 2009, 05:44:44 PM
Ok next silly question....how do I find out if I have SATA ports on my motherboard?

Tell us its MANUFACTURER and model number, or if your computer is a store bought one, its brand and model number.
Emachines W3052If the motherboard is the K7MNF-64 which shipped with the W3052 the user manual lists SATA connectors as being "Optional"

The only way to find out is to get into the case and have a look.

A zipped pdf user manual can be downloaded from here.. Other marketing sites list the specs with ide only.

Good luck.

Solve : RAM, Graphics Chip, Shared Memory?

Answer» 256MB of RAM and 32mb graphics chip. 32 is 12% of 256.
Those are the specs of my laptop. If I incress the RAM to 1gb will the graphics chip go up to 123mb(122.88), 12%? Is that how it works or will my graphics chip alway be 32mb?

Who said anything about gaming? I wanted to know if incressing RAM would it incress the graphics chip, since a graphics chip is integrated to your motherboard and therefore you can't upgrade it. Don't recall asking anything about gaming or what a good gaming computer is.Depends on the chip but i would bet if it's using 32 now that's what it will use with the new RAM.
There will be a performance gain overall but if you're thinking of gaming laptops aren't the greatest for that task.Alienware M-15X or Alienware M-17X are really good gaming laptops. They both have 9800M graphics cards on it, and 9800's are still good graphics cards DESPITE all the new ones coming out.

Given that you have EQUIVALENT parts for laptop and desktop, desktop should beat out the laptop but alienware gaming laptops are smoking hot but it comes with a big price tag Judging by his specs he doesn't have an Alienware...QUOTE from: PATIO on March 19, 2009, 05:37:40 PM
Judging by his specs he doesn't have an Alienware...

and i thought you said laptops weren't good for gaming? You need to get the right kind of laptop. They aren't.I just wondered .... why are they making laptops for gaming if laptops are strictly non gaming machines?Ask Alienware...

Solve : Xp trying to kill computer??

Answer»

I just installed xp back on my machine yesterday. (Hated vista, and got stuffed with viruses) So I formatted, reinstalled, and now xp has become very unreliable. Most of the time, it will start up just fine, but once I tell it to open a program it won't come up for a good 3 minutes. Remember, this ain't a slow computer.....2.3ghz quad core, 4GB ram, 512 video card. It never did this before. I think it might be HARDWARE because my computer hasn't been shut off properly all the time, and so something might be damaged.......

Please help!Seeing as you just installed XP, Install it again.

Remember to format the entire Hard Drive during the INSTALLATION.I'm pretty sure I did. Also windows won't update. It KEEPS saying it failed!Yeah, reinstall it.

One question, is it Genuine?yes.....100% genuine installation of xp. Why?Just wondering. Reinstall yet?sorry, just finished REINSTALLING now time for all the drivers and such...

Solve : Lexmark Z515 printer fault?

Answer»

The black cartridge 17 was used up so black PRINTING was fuzzy. I installed a new cartridge in the manner I had done previously. But it did not WORK this time. There was no black on the test pages and a text print gave nothing. Color continues to be ok. I then tried another new cartridge with the same NEGATIVE result. I put the old cartridge back and that worked.
I have carried out tests suggested by Lexmark Help but they have not helped to find out what the PROBLEM is.
