Solve : Keep fan settnings, and power supply question?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

I did just BUY 2 new fan's http://www.xigmatek.com/product/accessory-xsff1251.php I installed them and powered up my computer, 10 seconds it had load the desktop my computer did suddenly restart, then I thought it was a power supply error so I removed one fan and restart the computer and now it's run fine, I think.

Whit SpeedFan I lowered the fan speed whit 30% and now I'm wondering 2 things, if I can keep the fan speed on start-up somehow and if it really is a power problem, tho it seems like it I just want to be sure.

SYSTEM speck

Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2496MB RAM
Hard Drive: 1550 GB
Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX/9800 GTX+
Monitor: 1680 x 1050
Sound Card: SoundMAX HD Audio
Keyboard: HID-Compliant Bluetooth Keyboard
Mouse: HID-compliant Bluetooth Mouse

and I did clean my computer when I installed the fan's, and I got a 700W power supply, and can I see if I have enough power to keep everything working?Post your temps...

Who makes this PSU ? ?Here is the temp

this is when idle not when I play games, and the fan's I bought are not on. I ALSO have a regular fan in front of the computer (300x300)

and you have to define
Quote from: patio on December 27, 2009, 09:37:30 AM

Who makes this PSU ? ?

or do you mean manufacture? then it should be cooler master, other wise you have to define it.

Edit:
what if I use a 3 pin connector and plug it in to a 4pin,

then connect it to the Power supply thingy, would it be any different from plugging it in to the mother board,

Or would the power be the same even if I plug it in to the 4pin direct to the power supply

Or will everything be a mess?

Edit2:
Fixed some picture

Edit3:
Feel free to help if you feel like it, I'm open minded.I still cannot decide what your goal here is...
And i've read the thread 3 times...Quote from: patio on December 28, 2009, 02:13:17 PM
I still cannot decide what your goal here is...
And i've read the thread 3 times...
All I can understand is that he added 2 fans and the computer shut down a short time after the desktop loaded. He removed 1 fan and the problem has not reoccurred.
I don't think a 700W psu will have an issue with multiple cooling fans. I suspect the 1 fan was connected incorrectly since he doesn't seem to understand what signal/voltage is on what pin.Computer_Commando are right but well you get the fan's whit a 3pin connector I plugged both in to the only 3pin I had on my computer,

and then the fan's have power supply, but my motherboard didn't give enough whit power so the computer did a "emergency" restart, so I removed one fan and started my computer and it run, but I don't know if everything else will get enough power so I was asking if I could connect the 3pin from the fan to a 4pin so I could have direct connection to the power supply.

I use a 3 pin connector from the fan and plug it in to a 4pin,

Then connect it to the Power supply to the 4pin, you see the a text saying Molex 4 pin etc there is where I connect it

Would that work?

Btw it's ASUS P5B motherboardQuote from: Frejoh466 on December 29, 2009, 01:51:27 AM
...I was asking if I could connect the 3pin from the fan to a 4pin so I could have direct connection to the power supply...
Yes, but only 2 of the 3 wires can be connected, +12V & Gnd
On the 4-pin molex: +12 is yellow, Gnd is Black (2 of them), +5 is Red
On the fan: +12, Gnd, Speed Sensor (rpm); one of the reds is +12, don't know which.
You should be able to connect the fan directly to the motherboard, if you know which wire is which and what pin is what.
On motherboard pic, from right to left, pins are: Gnd, +12, RPM_Sense, but you should check this with manual or voltmeter. My motherboard can't give enough whit power to both of the fans, so everything just die if I connect them to the motherboard.

Edit:
Well now the fan dose take power directly without any crash and burns, but now I can't control speed due to it's not connected to the motherboard, well I guess I can live whit that if I don't want to do some serious hacking. but thanks for the help Speed control is what the 3rd lead is for...Quote from: patio on December 30, 2009, 08:07:12 AM

So if I plug the 3rd pin in to the motherboard I get speed control. Thanks patio Yepper...Quote from: Frejoh466 on December 30, 2009, 09:46:04 AM

Nope. Speed sensing, not speed control.

Common cooling fans will have either two, three, or four pins on the connector.

Two-pin fans OPERATE either as an on/off fan, or can be controlled by varying the voltage.
Three-pin fans add a tachometer reporting wire so the controlling system can measure the actual speed.
Four-pin fans add a fourth wire to control fan speed using PWM (Pulse-width modulation.)
Yer kiddin me right ? ?
If there's no speed control then what wire would control that ? ?

Can't wait for this response...

Solve : Software or hardware?? The Christmas gift isn't working!?

Answer»

Bought hubby a new barebones with
M4A785-M MOTHERBOARD and AMD ATHLON II X2 240 2.8GHZ AM3 CPU

We have installed our older
HITACHI HDT725032VLA360
PNY GFORCE 8800GTX
ULTRA ATX 850 POWER SUPPLY

When turning it on it will beep once, show the motherboard screen, try to start XP, stop and go to the safe mode screen.

It will only run in safe mode, not normal or last known good configuration. (It will repeat the above if we try normal or last known).

I really don't know if this is a hardware or software issue.
Thank you for your expertise!

Ran Avast with no changes. 1. Reinstall. WINDOWS XP is designed to be built on the machine it is to run on. It doesn't transfer well from one machine to another. I think you're saying you moved the existing operating system (hard drive) to a new motherboard and CPU.

You may need to perform a "repair" installation or a "new" installation of Windows XP.

I'm surprised you're able to boot to "Safe Mode". What was your old configuration. Maybe it's close enough to patch up. Maybe someone else has some thoughts on this...

You might be able to modify your "boot.ini" file to add additional invocation lines for the operating system to permit you to attempt booting with different versions of the "Hal.dll" and possibly "ntoskrnl.exe" (see the "/hal" and "/kernel" boot.ini option switches within Custom Boot Menu in Windows XP).

2. Blue Screen of Death (BSoD). Is there a BSoD when you attempt to boot normally? You may have to disable auto restart in order to see it.

Use the <F8> function key during system startup to access the Windows Advanced Options menu. Tap the key once or TWICE per second as you startup the computer (or immediately after POST completes and screen flashes black prior to displaying Windows XP logo with its processing BAR display).

From the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the up/down arrow keys to select the "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and hit Enter.

Hopefully the machine will stop on a BSoD. Record and post back with the "exact" error message text and/or numbers plus any error string or software module (file name) it might name.

3. Windows XP Install CD. Do you have the installation files available? As an alternative, your can try a "repair" install.
This is NOT from the Recovery Console.
Proceed with an install, if it finds an existing Windows XP installation, C:\WINDOWS, it will ask you if you want to repair the install.
Later on, you may need to activate XP again. Or something like that.In simple terms - if you took the hd from an old system and put it in the new system you need to reinstall the Operating System. Your best bet is to boot to the XP CD, format, and start from scratch. A repair install MAY work, but a clean install with a new system is best. You didn't say (and we didn't ask) whether you're using a "retail" or "OEM" license for that Windows XP installation.

Anyone have a link for the Windows XP OEM licensing terms?

You also should find the Windows XP "PRODUCT Key" before attempting a reinstall. You may need it.

(Have you heard about Linux?)OEM Liscensing...Thank you patio. Seems to be a lot of information... I guess that's a good thingHere is another.

Quote

Users who run a Microsoft Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) operating system may upgrade or REPLACE most of the hardware components on the computer and still maintain the license for the original Microsoft OEM operating system software provided by the OEM, with the exception of an upgrade or a replacement of the motherboard.

Solve : Advent 9315 screen?

Answer»

Ok so I arrive in London with my large bag that contains one laptop. Walking across the road and 'snap' the strap snapped 'crash'. Thought nothing of it at the time but when I set my laptop up... see pic.

Is it worth replacing the screen on SOMETHING like this and is it a big job?

[Saving space, attachment DELETED by admin]Best thing you can do is price out a replacement for it and determine if it's worth rescuing...Yeah just priced it off Amazon.. £67.99 not to big a deal I suppose. Will have to get some micro-screwdrivers as well.. Thanks for the reply. That's actually a really GOOD deal considering...I agree - At that price it is worth replacing the screen - I had to replace the screen on my laptop and it was quite easyOk ran into a snag of SORTS. Ordered the screen which will be here tomorrow. Now I can't undo one of the two screws on each side of the screen. Tried 3 different types of micro screwdrivers and it's getting to the point that I'm running a risk of rounding them off. Are there any tips to get these little.... things out before I break something else. Also is there a CHANCE there could be a NUT on the other side so would have to access it that way?
Thanks in advance

Solve : BIIIG Problems!?

Answer»

Ok so I will put a mash of PROBLEMS that I have, as I will copy and paste this on SEVERAL forums (I'm going desperate, need help soon).

1. Recently I bought a 220gt. Now my old card was a 120, and after installing driveres and everything (on displayh settings, it shows gt 120 for example it says displaying at 800x600 on gt220) for some reason I am getting WORSE performance on games than before. I heard it was supposed to be loud, I cant hear it, I checked the card for a 8pin connector for power but found none, is there one?
On a quick note that has me worried, while playing dead space, I was playing fine when my computer blacked out. The computer was still on but the screen said No VGA detected, what the *censored* hapened?

2. Me ethernet drivers have stopped working, I think this was shortly before I removed the Nvidia drivers from my computer (I removed all Nvidia drivers) either way, I ahve TRIED everything and it is not working. When I go to the device manager, here are the things that are not working:
Coprocessor (under storage devices)
Ethernet Controller
SM Bus controller (both under other devices)

My computer is the gateway lx6810

Please help me!
ThxSomebody will be with you shortly. It is hard for me to offer much help.
I am not SURE you can put that card into the stock gateway PC. It would be helpful it you would include some specs on your machine so we don't have to look it up. Like what is the Power Supply on you Gateway? Did you upgrade it? Did the documentation with the 220 video card say you need an extra power connector? I could look that up, bit that is the kind of homework you are supposed to do before you even buy the card.
Here is what you might have done.

1. You may have overloaded the power supply.
2. You may have damaged the video card by forcing it to run the wrong way.
3, Something else so bad I don't even what to guess. Quote

I removed the Nvidia drivers from my computer
Is the 220gt your referring to not Nvidia? Try reinstalling the drivers for your card.

I think the ethernet is a seperate issue, You should be able to get drivers from gateway. the power supply is 450w, it is compatible. It's brand new, I looked it up and you dont need an extra power connector.
I updated drivers and still NOTHING, computer keeps running but everytthing blacks out.

BTW I fixed ethernet issue
BTW I heard there is a crash report thing? How do I use it? Im sure it would help you guysDid you download the latest drivers directly from nvidia?

Solve : HD gone for ever???

Answer»

Okay, I think I already know that I'm outta luck but I thought I'd ask anyway.

My brother built me a new computer and moved my HD over to it without backing it up.

I couldn't get the computer online so I didn't register WinXP on time (3 days) so I was locked out.

My supposedly computer savvy friend said he had fixed just such an issue a few times before, 'no problem' he said - so I took him at his word.

He reinstalled my copy of WinXP Pro and wiped out EVERYTHING!

I have reinstalled Windows in the PAST and never wiped out my entire computer so I have no idea how he managed to literally wipe my system clean.

My question, is everything on my HD gone...forever?? Is there anything I can do to recover it? Are there companies that do that? Any idea on pricing?

Yep, I'm an idiot and I should have never trusted anyone to touch my system but done is done now.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Thanks for your time,

Miss Nikki1. Pull the Hard Drive. Stop using the hard drive immediately and disconnect it. Continuing to use and "write" to the hard drive can only cause more damage to your "missing" data.

2. Professional Data Recovery. Yes, there are companies that perform data recovery; but I have no knowledge or experience with any of them. No, I don't know about "pricing", but I've heard it can be expensive. I've also heard it can "vary" QUITE a bit from company to company.

You need to DECIDE what your "data" is worth and how much "risk" you're willing to accept.

3. Do you feel LUCKY? Buy a new hard drive and reinstall the operating system. "Slave" the old hard drive to this system to see what you can see. Avoid all writes to the old hard drive. I've heard an internal connection to the motherboard is better than an external enclosure.

Try some of the more reputable "free" data recovery and/or partition recovery software to see where you're at. Remember, no writes to the "old" hard drive. You need to recover data to the "new" hard drive or other storage media. Don't hurry. Understand what you are doing before acting...

I've never looked for files on a system where the operating system had been reinstalled (and partition was possibly deleted, recreated, and then formatted).

Solve : Power Supply Voltage Question?

Answer»

Hi,I hope this doesn't sound really stupid,But I have an OLDER AOpen SPI-235HP POWER supply that I pulled from one of my old parts computers to use for a home brew project that I am working on and when I checked the voltage on the +12 VDC lead I had only 10.44
VDC.Is this normal? I've built several desktops for myself and my friends and I've never needed to check the output on a power supply until now.I really need the full 12 volts.I appreciate any help. From what I've read on power supplies, the should be no more than a ±5% tolerance, so you're looking at something like 11.4v-12.6v as acceptable. Anything outside of that range will EITHER over or under power WHATEVER you're connected to leading to undesired results.

If your power supply is only putting out 10.44v, there's likely something wrong with it (old?) and anything relying on 12v may not work properly. How are the other voltages? They should be 5 and 3.3, with the same general ±5%.

Power supplies are not user serviceable. If it's not working properly, you're best off replacing it.No-load voltage could be normally low. Plug a case fan in and test again.

Solve : Computer seems to turn on but black screen?

Answer»

So I got a hp pavilion tx510us entertainment notebook (runs Vista) and it seems to turn on (like all the lights are on and it makes noises) but the screen is black/blank or whatever. And its not just a blank screen because then I would have been able to put my pass in and then hear the turn on music and stuff. The thing is this happened before when it was still under WARRANTY so I sent it in for free and they sent it back and it turned on and it still had on all my stuff so it must have been an easy enough solution, but when I chatted with them again I guess they don't keep track of what they did to it and they want me to send it in again and that would cost a large sum of money because its no longer under warranty. I did a hard reset a few times and took out the memory module and put it back in agian but still nothing. So, anyone have any ideas?
could b a back lite problem. try flashing lite on screen c if u c image. look hard hehe its faint. cheersThanks for the suggestion, tried it didn't worked used a flashlight and everything. Another thing is that usally when I shut the lap top it goes into sleep mode but now it just says turned on (only black screen). It could be the inverter or the actual screen itself.

Capacitators are the round cylindrical things.

1. If he says an IC there's no reason to doubt, given the symptoms he described, that he means an IC. It stands for "INTEGRATED Circuit".

A voltage regulator IC, often called simply a "power IC". They are dotted around most motherboards, and if a short circuit or component failure occurs, they can, as described, burn up.

2. There is no such thing as a "capacitator".

I agree, though, the motherboard may need REPLACING.

Integrated circuits are everywhere; a cpu microprocessor is an IC, so is every single "chip" on the motherboard and elsewhere in a computer. I will admit I am very ignorant... hi. I am interested in buying more memory and a video card for my computer but I need to know if they will work out good with the latest games. here is my computer specs-

I want to buy from these links-

I believe the card will work.

The memory that you have selected is DDR266, I believe you need DDR333 or DDR400. crucial.com and memory-up.com as well as others have free scanners to find out what memory you have and what you can can use.
Check on newegg.com to make SURE whatever you buy from ebay is actually a "good buy" , check for return policy and warranty no matter where you buy from.can I use this memory-

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134036&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Memory+(Desktop+Memory)-_-Kingston+Technology+Corp.-_-20134036also would this memory work-

http://www.amazon.com/PNY-OPTIMA-PC2700-Desktop-MD1024SD1-333/dp/B000701CJQWhy don't you just travel to Crucial's site and run the online SCANNER that was suggested above ? ?Even if you don't buy from Crucial, you should run their scan to better understand what you currently have and what you need.

Personally, I have bought a number off things off eBay, but when it comes to ELECTRONICS, even new, I just have a problem with it. I think you are better off with established sites.

Solve : Epson Stylus Pro 4000 Printer?

Answer»

The head on my Epson 4000 printer is always plugging, I've had this printer for years and never come up with a good solution for this problem.

I've tried pulling the ink tanks out, and putting empty ones in there place when I'm not printing, but other then doing a print head cleaning, nothing SEEMS to help!

I'm hoping to get in contact with someone, who has this printer and has come up with a solution to this problem. Carl1, That sure is some impressive printer you have. Although i have and still do own many Epson printers i do not own that one. I found the following review of your printer and i note under the information on "configuration" a reference to "clogs" that may have a bearing on your issue. It appears that that FUNCTION "clearing clogs" is a built in "automatic" thing. So i am wondering if maybe this part of the machine is no longer working for you. truenorth http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/printers/epson-4000.shtmlThank you truenorth, I'll look at that.

I've been looking for a long time for someone with a tip or somekind of a solution to this problem.
I run a print test everytime before printing, and when I'm done pull the ink tanks and put in empties, hoping that will stop it.
The tanks for this printer are AROUND $70 per tank, and as good as it is, if your wasting ink, well you understand.

Solve : Replacing hard drives??

Answer»

Recently my HP laptop stopped working, it will not start up. i've had such problems before but when i would take out the battery and put it back in it would work, now it does NOT. I have a gateway laptop whose internal hard drive has CRASHED. Can i take out my HP hard drive and put it in my gate way laptop. Would it work fine just as it was on my HP. If not is there anyway i can retrieve my data from my crashed HP computer , specially i need my itunes folder from program files so i can have all my playlist loaded into a new itunes for another computer . all help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance .Unfortunately you can't expect the OS from one laptop to work in another laptop. The hardware is different, so the drivers are different. Get one of these:

2.5" laptop to IDE converter...
This will enable you to hook up the laptop HDD's to any working desktop and retrieve...burn your data...

About 7 Bucks at any PC store...1. Computer Specs.
a. Make, model name/number of HP laptop
b. Product Number (should be info tag back, bottom, or under battery)
c. Operating system and service pack level of laptop

2. Restore/Recovery Resources. The "support" pages of the HP website should document what your restore/recovery options are for that HP laptop if it is a standard build/installation.
a. Hard drive may have "hidden" restore/recovery partition
b. Restore/Recovery CD/DVDs may be available from HP for "nominal" cost.
c. Do you have Microsoft "RETAIL" installation media for your operating system.

4. Data Recovery. Standard operating procedure for "data" recovery is to "slave" the data drive to a known working computer and attempt repair and/or recovery from its operating system. This operating system must support the file system type of the data drive.

If the data is important to you and the disk is readable, focus first on "data" recovery rather than repair. You should avoid any "writes" to the data drive. You just want to "read" it. You'll also need to determine where to place any recovered files (CD-R, DVD, USB thumb/flash, or hard drive media).

After you've secured the data you can't afford to lose, attempt to repair the file system and/or boot records.

The "slaved" drive may be attached to an internal INTERFACE of the working computer (best option) or PLACED in an external USB enclosure with the appropriate internal interface.

You'll need to determine the interface of the laptop hard drive (?) and the available internal interfaces of the working computer (IDE or SATA). Special interface cables with the appropriate adapters may be purchased for this operation.

5. Boot Live CD or USB Media. Alternatively, you can try to recover/repair the file system of the laptop by booting a compatible operating system from a Live CD or USB media. This operating system should permit access to your hard drive file system and include capability to copy files to other media. (Of course if laptop has hardware issues, you could do more damage to your files.)it just won't start up, it does not display anything. Before when it did that i took out the battery and put it back then it started. Now nothing at all. I just want my data from that hard drive.

ill add all the laptop specs later as i am not near it now.

Solve : Old game doesn't recognise graphics card?

Answer»

Old game I am trying to play is Wheel of TIME Video game from 1999.

The game wont recognise my graphics card and only setting that is playable is SOFTWARE rendering. With that graphics are so bad that game is hardly playable.
If I try to start the game with any other setting that Software rendering it crashes on start giving error about not finding graphics card.

Is there any way I could make it recognise my graphics card and get (somewhat) better graphics?

I tried using compatibility modes (Win 95&98) but those didn't help.

My graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460.
OS is Windows 7 pro 64 bit.

My old computer which had Geforce G6500 could run this game without problems.

"software rendering" probably means it is pushing all the work to the CPU...
http://www.computingunleashed.com/how-to-runplay-latest-games-without.html
the grammar in the above link is terrible, but it is on the right track of simulating an older graphics card with 3DAnalyze... I'll see if I can get more info on simulating graphics cards...Many games have aftermarket patches to resolve issues with them involving their (utterly stupid IMO) support for only very specific chipsets. Games that fall into this category (RIDICULOUS 3-D support constraints as WELL as aftermarket patches to fix that stupidity) usually have patches that apply either to the game executable itself, to the "3d Device setup" program (and/or it's database file) or both.

A quick search using a query to this end gave me this page, which lists several patches, including one listed as a "Direct3d patch" which may be helpful.

I cannot install those patches, they wont install because they wont detect the game. ("Please install game before installing this patch.")
Game's install CD has been lost for years so I have been moving the game from computer to computer simply by copying the game folder. So I am not very surprised that patches wont detect it.
I tried opening patches in game folder but didn't help.

I also tried 3d Analyser, so far it didn't help either. I'll keep experimenting with its many options when I have more time.
Any idea which options I should use?

And these all options the game gives me for graphics:
3dfx Glide for Windows - Works, same low graphics as software rendering, complaints missing Dll while starting.
Direct3d support - Game crashes
OpenGL support - Game crashes
S3 Metal for Windows - Works, same low graphics, complaints missing Dll while starting.
Software rendering - Works, low graphicsYou need to purchase the game if you want it to run properly...I know the game files are fine because on other computers it works without any problem.
After so many years it would be hard to find this game on sale, and even I found it I wouldn't buy game that already own.Quote from: Madoc Comadrin on August 22, 2011, 03:22:40 AM

and even I found it I wouldn't buy game that already own.

If you lost the disc, you no longer own the game, really.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 22, 2011, 09:29:02 AM
If you lost the disc, you no longer own the game, really.

I still possess those bits that make up the game.

I managed to install that 3d patch but it didn't help. (I found out that default location for game was C:/Wheel of Time not C:/Program files so moving game to default folder allowed INSTALLATION.)
But it didn't help, game still crashes like before.

Any other ideas what might help?

Solve : Potential power supply issue?

Answer» HELLO,
Not sure if I am in the right category for this, but I moved a computer from one location to the other... the computer turned on fine before moving, now when I PLUG it in, the green indicator light keeps blinking and the computer won't turn on.. I checked all the connections and they are all Ok...
Am I right in assuming the power supply may be toast?.. (the little red switch to indicate 115 or 220 has not been move, still on 115).. is there any resolving the issue without purchasing a new power supply??
Thank you,
LarryBefore you give up on the PSU i'd try removing a side panel and double check all drive connectioons...remove and re-seat both the vid card and RAM modules as well...
As always unplug all power and take anti-static precautions...Thanks for your quick reply!
I did check and had done all that you had mentioned and still have the issue.. I might add that for a few days before I decided to move it, that on occasion I would open a website and while the page was open at times it would completely disappear as if I closed the page... I suspected issues before this and have moved to a new location, out of the way, so I could perhaps experiment with it... it is a older computer (about 6+ years old) and I don't want to put a great deal of MONEY into it, if at all...SMILE..

LarryTry booting with only 1 stick of RAM, CPU and heatsink, and video card unless it has onboard video (without the hard drive plugged in to see if it POSTs...No luck!... thanks, everyone, for your attempts to help but believe it may be a dead issue at this TIME...

3. Is there a PATTERN to the "freezes"? What application or internet browser are you using when it freezes?

So I have an acer aspire 3680 and the computer was completely shutting down all of the sudden by itself like a month ago. Now it will turn on for about 10 seconds then shut down again. The CHARGER is new and good. Any ideas? thanksWas there anything different that occurred before the problem arose (new hw, sw, virus, ERROR, etc)?Remove the battery and try it....same results ?no new software or viruses.hw, errors?I removed the battery and I started it up. I thought that solved it but the computer just lost power again and shut down.no hw errorsThen either the power pack is dying/dead and or if the machine was jarred possibly a cold solder joint has gone bad...
That or the actual power lead to the MBoard needs repaired.

Call some local shops for estimates...this is NOT a DIY repair generally...The battery hasn't worked for a MINUTE. I know how to solder as well.MBoards are not just regular soldering skills on account of the MULTIPLE layers but i'm not questioning your skills here...just making SURE you know what's involved.

He was GOING to do it for me but he passed away 8 days ago.

So the help I would like is 1. How do I reformat the HDD and 2. how do I erase all the personal things of his if possible freely.

KenBoot to the Windows CD of your choice...
In SETUP select delete partition and re-create...
Then continue with setup.DBAN will do the job:
Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can DETECT, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

This does not securely delete data-I have successfully recovered files with Recuva-however it is definitely an easier way...Unless they are wanted by the FBI it will work just fine...Thanks for the info I have just tried dban but when it starts I get error messages.

Solve : Running a tower desktop to HD TV?

Answer»

Currently thinking of buying the Acer Aspire Predator G7700 Sniper IV configuration to run via a HD TV due to absolute terrible website design and such lack of information. Also misinterpretating and MISUNDERSTANDING information from various sources Amazon, Play.com and also sources advertised on google shop stating the different configurations that Acer are producing. I have found a reliable stockist UK, I do have to order the desktop but that's no biggy, I would prefer buy from Comet than an online stockist that I have never heard of.

I am wanting to run it via a 30-40" LCD/LED TV, not sure on the model. And I'm not sure on the exact ports the Predator has but I have e-mailed acer to find out if they have HDMI or DVI on the desktop. If one of these is available, can I use the TV as my MONITOR for the PC to do all my computer related activities? (music, basic gaming, basic office work, dowmloading, net browsing and movies from different sources - DOWNLOADED, non hd dvds and blu-ray dvds).

Here is the link to it via comet, they say no HDMI port but also on other sites there is mention of HDMI being on the computer, I cannot imagine a Acer having different inputs/case capabilities on the different configurations as I have come across about 6/7 for each model of predator, the blu G7200 and the orange g7700:

http://www.comet.co.uk/shopcomet/product/563218/ACER-SNIPER-IV/tab/specification

Any help is much appreciated right now, very frustrated. I will shed as much as light on the situation as POSSIBLE answering everyones questions to try and solve my annoying dillemma. Kind regards Josh

joshuashaw, have not examined your exact hardware that you mention. However the short answer to the question " can I use the TV as my monitor for the PC to do all my computer related activities? (music, basic gaming, basic office work, downloading, net browsing and movies from different sources - downloaded, non hd DVDs and blu-ray " is yes. Depending on what output/input ports are available on the computer/HD TV units that will determine what you need to have at opposite ends of the connection cable. I am using a 36 in. HDMI television connected to a Dell XPS and can do all the things that you mention should i desire to. truenorthTo drive a HD TV set one of the most important things to look for would be a HDMI output on the video card. There are plenty on the market, but it's just not a standard item yet for off the shelf PCs.

If Acer can't add or upgrade one for you I would look elsewhere.

Other than that it looks like a good MACHINE.

Solve : No Sound -- Usual Fixes Aren't Working?

Recently I had to remove Windows entirely from my laptop and then install it back on, clean slate. Everything seemed to be working, but I've discovered I have no sound. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling it with no avail, and the Windows troubleshooter was no help. Any FIX or workaround would be appreciated.

Although, if you'll allow me, I have another, much smaller, RELATED problem that maybe you can put your intellect to. There are buttons on the front of my computer for controlling sound: volume up/down and mute. Before my re-installation of Windows, those buttons, when pressed, would bring up a quick, opaque box with a bar indicating volume level, which would quickly disappear after a second or two.

These buttons now still appear to control the sound, but I have no indicator. Do you--or anyone willing--know of how to get that back?Just out of curiosity, what fixed the problem? Did a restart after installing the chipset driver fix the problem, or did the sound driver I recommended fix the problem?

As far as the sound goes... Click Start and then click on Control Panel..

There are probably options for sound under the "sounds and audio devices"...Or dell may have there own proprietary options for sound, somewhere in Control Panel..Hm... afraid I don't see any options like that in the Control Panel...

As for the fix, it was the sound driver. I suspect the chipset driver had a hand in it, too.

Solve : HP compaq nx9005... Help!?

Answer»

My friend has dropped their HP compaq nx9005. Now I know it works as I've plugged it in to my monitor and it boots up FINE and dandy. However, when I boot it up on it's own with no monitor plugged in the Laptop screen it not working.

I was THINKING that this, POSSIBLY, has either dislodged something on the on-board graphics chipset or the drop may have jolted loose the inverter somehow.

Would a laptop screen still work without the inverter?? I mean would it still come but just not be brighter?

any suggestions peeps... ?

Cheers.. B2If the inverter was damaged, yes you will see 'ghosts' of what is on the screen, with most lcd screens you can use a flashlight to highlight portions of it to see what is there

Otherwise it is likely to be a damaged or dislodged screen cable. My V2000 would only operate the laptop screen if I ALMOST had the laptop CLOSED until I replaced the cable with a spare from the computer workshop at work.Found somebody on eBay that will sell two of these for $80. B oath non working.

Solve : emachine won't recognize monitor?

Answer»

I recently told a friend that I would look at his computer because he didn't know how to REFORMAT it or anything and he wanted it done. He said that it has been SITTING for months and he knows nothing about it. From the looks of it, the computer is an emachine t3085 with just under a gig of RAM. It has a radeon 9800 pro 128m graphics card and is relatively clean inside. My real PROBLEM is that when I connect the monitor to the computer and turn it on, the monitor just says that there is no signal. I tried another monitor just I got no luck. I thought it might be the cord but it worked just fine on another computer. Could be the video card. Check to see it's PROPERLY seated. If it is, try a different card and see if it works.Quote from: kpatcox on August 21, 2011, 04:35:21 PM

No. But if the RAM isnt busted, then I think the PCI connector on the Mobo might be. And that would be expensive to replace. Quote from: Transfusion on August 21, 2011, 10:21:06 AM

Solve : has my monitor had it??

Answer»

Happy new YEAR to you all.
My monitor flashes on and off at boot.
This started about 5 days ago after about 3 minites it stops and is ok for the rest of the day.
It now takes longer to settle down, I thught this mite be the graphics card.
But i have tried 2 outher computers conected to the monitor and also diffrent cables
digital and analog.
If i boot the computer with out the monitor conected, and then conect it later it still flashes on and off for some time.
The make and model of computer seems irevelent but they are both win xp pro.
The monitor is View Sonic VX910 model no VS10162.
Power supply is mains input.
Any help please Mopy.Since i am guilty of mostly ASKING question rather than contributing by posting a few answers i would like to start off the new year by offering my two cents. Please take it with a grain of salt because as good as i am compared to most of the people that i actually know with computer help needs i am by no stretch of the imagination in the same ball park as my CH comrades.

So here goes:

First off you didn't mention make model and type of monitor. Based on what you said i am picturing a CRT instead of an lcd. Under certain circumstance i think that the CRT would behave as you discribed if it was one of the following: Old, Cold, tired but not fired.

Cold meaning the room temp is colder than most of the time in my experience results in less than perfect performance. i have seen similar results if the video card is old and or cold. After they warm up they are like an old girlfriend: willing to play like they used to.
Since i have far more monitors than one Hopi should admit to i change mine out quickly to see how the newer one perform. If the perform well then i figure the other one is ready for the gift pile. Believe it or not that are so folks who would love your flicker rather than there fun house mirror.

Hope this helps.

i would also suggest updating drivers because they are usually free and fix many things.

Hope this is of some help to you.

Happy new year!Quote from: Kryptonite on JANUARY 03, 2010, 03:10:04 AM

ViewSonic VX910 is a 19" LCD monitor

Sounds like the backlight or inverter is dying...

To test if the LCD panel is actually working, shine a strong light on it. If you can see stuff on the screen faintly (in between the "flashes") then a repair job is called for in my opinion.

This is the monitor i have.
And yes i can see all when a light is shoon in.
Is this a replasement job or repair job, replacment about £100
Thanks Kevin.i probably should have googled the model number before guessing what it wasn't....no excuses just anxious to want to contribute if i can.No problem mate thanks for the reply.

A repair firm would probably charge such a big percentage of the price of a new monitor that you may not think it is worth it. I guess you are in the UK like me, since you mention £s. On the web I see one US firm charges a flat fee of $145 to fix any fault on a 19" monitor (except for a new panel). They charge much less to supply a replacement part e.g. $75 for an inverter board or $50 - $70 for backlights, but you need to be sure you know what the problem is and how to replace the part. I imagine that if you went to a UK firm the the NUMBERS (in pounds) would be a bit smaller but not much. These things are like TVs - these days, for a punter, there's no point in having a repair job done on a cheaper model. Especially if you were thinking of upgrading.

Having said that, you could give Techno-Mart in Harrow a ring.

http://www.techno-mart.co.uk/

They say repairs start at £39 + VAT and they don't charge for an estimate (no fix, no fee) & if you are near enough to drop it off & collect it you could save the carriage charges.

And/or check out yellow pages & compare

some problems in the hardware is costly to repair, you could buy another part cheaply ............Many thanks for your help everyone Please consider this thread now closed.
Thanks Kevin. (UK)

Solve : Help installing Matrox G450, please?

I WOULD appreciate some assistance letting me know where I could find the correct driver for this video card, Matrox G450 32 MB Dual Head AGP Video Card. I purchased it off ebay (item #170408830746

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...e=STRK:MEWNX:IT

if you want to look at it to see exactly what I bought) and I am instaling to a Compaq with ONBOARD video with XP. I found this:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documen...;product=240109

which gives step by step instructions to install. But since I bought this off ebay I do not have a disk to install the driver and I would not know when to install the driver PER those directions. If I could get someone to give me link to the correct driver, since I am finding what seems like 100 different links to install drivers and I don't know which one is correct. Let me know if the install instructions are right and when should I install the driver. I THOUGHT at step 6 I would not have any video since I would have already changed the BIOS. I like I said I am a novice.

Thank you in advance

Solve : wireless router problem?

I have a rca dcw725 wireless gateway router. I am using a Dell Inspiron netbook and a xbox360 hooked to this router the netbook is wireless the xbox is wired. After 20 minutes or so I will get disconnected from internet and the second ethernet port on my router will be lit up but nothing is plugged into it. I will reset my router and it will work good for another 20 minutes or so. I NEED help this is getting really frustrating...DSL ? ?
If so all filters in place ? ?yes dsl.. filters? high speed is new to me so in learning everythingCan anyone tell me why the second ethernet port shows a connection when there is nuthin plugged into itThey go on every phone line...
If an incoming phone call drops your connection you need more of them...
Call your provider...they hand them out like candy.

Can anyone tell me why the second ethernet port shows a connection when there is nuthin plugged into it
This is a Windows quirk...not to worry. Also, would help to know how LONG he has had the DSL service. How old is the router. Did the problem start recently after some change.

How many times has it failed after twenty minutes?
Four out of five? One out of three?
How old is the router?i got dsl service and router first week of dec. its been doing this the whole time. ive tried asking my provider but either the person didnt know at the time or i cant even get through.

It has times when it will disconnect 5 or 6 times in 20 minutes other times it may go 45 minutes ok as far as those filters there is no phone lines coming through only cable in the housestev, As you are new to the DSL phenomenon here is what Patio is referring to with the suggestion of "phone filters". As he SAID it should not be necessary to "buy " them as usually your DSL provider will supply some (3-4) usually. But you must have one on every line where a phone is connected (except the line leading to the ISP provided DSL modem) so if you have more phone lines you may need to purchase extras. They are very inexpensive and 2-3 dollars per ought to do it. truenorth
http://www.winbuyer.com/cat-96454/keyword-dsl%20phone%20line%20filters/init-1/D-22102007/C-Type2_20/?c=7296454&gclid=CP2S9fDKhp8CFZZ75QoddRVlMwstev, so we are on the wrong tack IT appears that you do NOT have DSL what you have is a "cable " high speed connection. CORRECT? truenorthSome clarification does seem needed here. stev, is your broadband Internet access provided by your cable COMPANY or it is a telephone-line based connection? DSL is a telephone-line based connection. So, DSL or cable, which is it?

The filters mentioned in this discussion apply to DSL, not to cable. If you have DSL, your ISP would normally have sent you some DSL filters along with the modem.

Who is your ISP?ok im sorry i have cable i thought dsl was basically high speed either phone or cableQuote from: stev on January 02, 2010, 03:18:16 PM

Solve : Certain keys on keyboard not working?

Answer»

Hi, this is my first post on these forums so I hope I am posting in the right area!

After eight months of sitting in my closet infected with a virus, I finally took my Dell Inspiron 1525 to a computer repair store and had a new HD installed. It's working great and after being stuck with an Acer netbook during the Dell's hiatus, I'm happy as a clam.

However, some of the keys on the KEYBOARD are not working, and if I remember right, weren't working before the virus took the Dell out of commission. As far as I know, the keys that are not working are: Esc, Delete, and the down arrow key. The guy who fixed my laptop said he couldn't fix the keys, which I thought was kind of odd, as it seems like a pretty trivial task compared to saving all my data and installing a new HD, but then again I know nothing about repairing computers.

Anyone have an idea of what might be causing just these keys to not work? I should say that about a year ago the laptop fell off my bed (oops) and I had to have the power jack repaired, but in all honesty I can't remember if the keys stopped working right after the fall or if it took a while.

Obviously these keys aren't necessary for me to be able to use the laptop but would be HANDY to have them back so I don't always have to switch to the trackpad.

I am running Windows Vista Home Basic.Buy a cheap keyboard on eBay...

Solve : One certain frequency plays very loudly on my speakers?

Answer»

Ok, so my SPEAKERS are a Logitech Z5300 5.1 set and my sound card is the Creative X-fi Elite Pro. I have bass redirection ENABLED with the crossover frequency set at 140hz. Now whenever I'm writing or LISTENING to music or SOMETHING and the computer plays the frequency 123hz (the B a minor 9th below Middle C), it is really loud and muddled, much louder than any of the other pitches near it. I'm not sure if this is the only frequency this happens on, but it's the only one that I've noticed or that bothers me. I tried pulling the speakers off of the WALL to see if the speakers were resonating the wall, but it wasn't that. Does anyone know why this might be or how to fix it? Or is that just a particularly resonant pitch on these speakers? If there's anything I left out or anything else you would need to know, just say so. Thanks so much well, i think the only way to find out would be to try different speakers. I know that seems obvious but i decided to reply anyway.

Solve : New Wireless NIC; Issues.?

Answer»

I installed a new Wireless NIC in one of my computers. It is a D-Link Rangemax Super G 108mbps. I have a Wireless Super G router 108mbps router.

The Wireless NIC PICKS up my HOME network signal strength at about 20%, 8-12 mbps.

ANOTHER computer that sits on the same desk (and therefore is the same distance from the router) receives the same signal at about 80%, 54 mbps continuously, and that is an OLDER system with a 54 mbps G card.

After installing the Wireless NIC, I reinstalled Windows XP Pro 32 bit. All the drivers for everything (including the Wireless NIC) have been installed.

Moving the antenna/pointing it into a different DIRECTION has no affect on signal strength.

Does anyone have any idea why this is, and how I can fix it?

I used to use their systems and they were pretty good. It's probably the same company you found on the web - contact them and see if they can help.Yes, it is a good machine but as you see I need a manual to help me set-up. I tried to contact them but they have no e-mail for their PCs as they no longer manufacture them. One suggestion i'll make ....try and determine who makes the MOTHERBOARD and see if you can track down an Owner's Manual for that...
That should CONTAIN most of the info needed...

Does this machine run ? ?Yes, it runs fine until today when it froze while trying to download an MSN Toolbar. It was loaded with Windows XP in 2002 and it is very fast although the volume even at maximum setting, is hard to hear.If it runs then DLoad install and run Everest Home on it....

Tell us the rest of the story.I don't know I try ed reloading the operating system before no luck know it wont let me in at all. can I wipe the hard drive and start over?Dell OptiPlexes running Win2K are often found in offices, schools, etc. I know them well.

Quote from: Wikipedia

Dell, Inc. targets its OptiPlex line of desktop computers for sale into the corporate, government and education markets.

They are nice little quiet portable (!) machines. If a BIOS password is set and required to start, that is because the owner made it that way. A "hard crash" cannot cause this. A used one from a reputable (!) ex-corporate supplier will not have one set and activated.

Having said that, Dell does not make a secret of how to remove a OptiPlex BIOS password, I am surprised to note.

If you type "remove Dell Optiplex BIOS password" into Google, one of the first results takes you to the Dell website where you can read:

Quote

Dell Optiplex BIOS Password Recovery

The BIOS password may be cleared from a Dell Optiplex by removing the password jumper (PSWD) from the motherboard.

The location of the password jumper on a Dell Optiplex motherboard can be found by reviewing the Optiplex User Guides.

For most Dell Optiplex desktops, the steps to reset a BIOS password and clear all CMOS settings are:

* Locate the 3-pin CMOS password reset jumper on the system board.
* Remove the jumper plug from pins 1 and 2.
* Place the jumper plug on pins 2 and 3 and wait approximately 5 seconds.
* Replace the jumper plug on pins 1 and 2.

You have not said which Optiplex model you have, but a link on that page will take you to a LIST of models with a link to each guide.

How do you get from this (above)...

OK a CHANGE in the window info
It used to say:

Detecting Primary Master...None
Detecting Primary Slave...None

Now it reads:
Detecting Primary Master... SAMSUNG SV6003H
Detecting Primary Slave ...NONE
...
...to this (above). You went from a Toshiba & a Sony to a Samsung. Is this the same computer? Looked it up, the Samsung is the hard drive. If the BIOS doesn't see a device, Windows won't see it.Quote from: Salmon Trout on August 18, 2011, 01:31:15 PM
You can get them everywhere else as well.

It was intended to be.
No latch to be found on the heatsink. Darn thing is impossible to remove. I'll try replacing the battery. Wouldn't that be awesome if it were 3.50buk fix!Commando...good question. I have no idea how it went from a sony to a toshiba to a samsung. It is a Sony. Maybe when I hit the default settings it changed? Arghghhh!!!
Low or dead CMOS batteries will do all kinds of weird things. Same thing for digital WATCHES. Just a couple hours AGO, couldn't figure out why stopwatch function wouldn't reset properly, kept resetting to all 2's or all 3's, would go to 00 for a second then back to 2's or 3's. Removed battery, load tester indicates virtually dead.Quote from: Computer_Commando on August 20, 2011, 04:29:12 PM

Why would a low battery change SONY into TOSHIBA and then SAMSUNG? Why not SONY to ^&%%R$$£ and then =))[emailprotected]@# and then ::%$£? Seems kind of odd that the putative "low battery" would just happen to know the names of some East Asian drive manufacturers and be able to spell them, too.

Only the Primary Master changed from NONE to SAMSUNG SV6003H
Primary Slave stayed at NONE
Secondary Master & Slave went from NONE to "nothing listed", either OMITTED by OP or ?

Solve : Booting Problem?

Answer»

Hi,

If I keep my PC idle for long time (around 2 to 3 hrs or more), it does not start immeadiately when i switch on next time. ie it seems SMPS is working & light in CD drive starts flickering but there is no display in the monitor. I have to wait for around 5 to 10 mts and then switch on once again. Then it will start working.

Please let me know what could be the problem.

Thanks & Regards,

if Software problem

if hardware problem check ur vendorDid this problem just start? If so, is there anything different since the last time everything WORKED normally (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)? Does the system shut down normally? Does everything work properly when the system is running?

Test: Boot to safe mode, leave it alone for a while. Shutdown and restart. What happens? This problem exists for more than 15 days. It shutsdown normally. As I stated earlier if I restart immeadiately (or within a short time 5 or 10 mts) , it may boot without any problem. It looks like booting process happens . But not even a single character is displayed in the monitor. Will it be a Cable Problem?

Thanks and Regards,
RangaHowever the system becomes very slow when it is running . Many of the times softwares become non-responsive.What happens in safe mode?It doesn't start in safe mode. It just displays some system files & restart ones again.1. What Computer?
a. Is it a desktop, laptop, or netbook?
b. Is it a CRT or LCD monitor?
c. Is the monitor built-in (laptop or netbook screen)?

2. What do you mean by "idle"?
a. PC is shutdown and powered off (electronics are "cold").
b. PC is in "hibernation" mode.
c. PC is in "sleep" mode.

3. No display.
a. Nothing at all displays during system startup?
(1) No video card, motherboard, or computer vendor logo.
(2) No POST screen diagnostics.
(3) No operating system loading screen.
b. Have you tried a different monitor, data, and/or power cable?
c. Have you tried a different video card or onboard graphics?
d. Have you tried monitor on a known good working computer system?

4. Hardware Diagnostics. See how system and display performs when booting from hardware diagnostic CDs.
a. Memory diagnostics (www.memtest.org or www.memtest86.com)
b. Hard disk drive diagnostics (Get from drive manufacturer web site).

If problem persists, disconnect and/or remove all peripherals and expansions cards not needed to test memory or hard drive to eliminate them as the source of your problem.

1. What Computer?

c. Is the monitor built-in (laptop or netbook screen)?

It is a CRT monitor.

c. Have you tried a different video card or onboard graphics?
d. Have you tried monitor on a known good working computer system?

a. Just blank screen.
b,c,d) No.

Not able to extract memtest file. Let me try other.
Which peripheral is required to get first line of display in monitor.

5. Operating System. What operating system and service pack level are you running?

Windows Xp Operating +Sp21. Computer system.
a. Windows XP SP2
b. CRT Monitor
c. Hard Disk Drive
d. CD-ROM Drive

e. Is it a desktop computer?
f. Does computer have onboard video, separate video card, or both?
g. Does computer have a working (and bootable) floppy drive?

2. Power On Self Test (POST). You should be able to use POST to test ability to display to both a "cold" and a "warm" monitor. However, it would be EASIER to test monitor on a known good working computer system.

Minimum hardware required for Power-On Self Test:
a. Power Supply
b. Motherboard
c. CPU
d. Memory
e. Video Card
f. Monitor (might be required for newer motherboards)
g. Keyboard (not required, but needed to enter CMOS setup for system BIOS. Best to use PS/2 keyboard interface for troubleshooting).

Traditionally, a successful POST gives a "single" beep from motherboard speaker. Not all systems adhere to this. Without a monitor, POST errors are communicated using a series of "short" and "long" beeps. With a monitor, you might get both a beep code sequence and error message on monitor.

3. Test CRT Monitor.
a. Standalone test (while not connected to computer)
(1) Power on a "cold" monitor. Does it display anything; e.g. "Please check video cable connection" or "No VGA signal input"?
(2) Let monitor warm up. Power it down, then back on. Does it display anything.

b. With "data" cable connected to computer (which is shutdown and powered off).
(1) Power on a "cold" monitor. Does it display anything; e.g. "Please check video cable connection" or "No VGA signal input"?
(2) Let monitor warm up. Power monitor down, then back on. Does it display anything.

c. With "data" cable connected to computer (which is shutdown and powered off).
(1) Power on a "cold" monitor and then the computer.
(a) Does monitor display anything? Should display one or more of the FOLLOWING:
o video card, motherboard, or computer vendor logo
o POST screen diagnostics
o operating system loading screen
(2) Let monitor warm up. Power monitor down, then back on. Restart computer. Does monitor display anything.

4. I'm thinking hardware. I don't know what is causing your problems, but I'm thinking hardware rather than software. I can't come up with one thing that is consistent with all of your symptoms.
a. Bad system RAM can cause a "blank" display.
b. A system that becomes slow and non-responsive could be caused by excessive heat or a FAILING disk drive. (Ensure all computer fans are working. Blow out your computer with "canned" air - especially around the video card.)

5. Memory Diagnostics. I like to boot memory diagnostics because it exercises the basic components of your computer system under a light power load. And it permits you to test system operation with a minimum of hardware connected. You can disconnect most peripherals, expansion cards, and internal drives to ensure they aren't the cause of your problem.
