Solve : date and time settings?

Answer»

there is dis system i use. its a p3 system with 256mb ram.i changed the hdd when the system was infected but when i did i noticed that it was soooooo sooo SLOW to load and kept complaining of date and time settings and when i tried to change it in bios setup it wouldnt change but after a series of restarting it would work but at tmes it wouldnt browse and will reduce the windows u open but one can change its date and time at the taskbar but it would still be slow.i've tried changing the ram twice and its still thesame...any help is welcomeQuote from: jessyb on April 09, 2009, 11:03:01 AM

My system is a Pentium 3 with 256Mb of RAM. I changed the HDD after the system was infected but when I did I noticed that the system ran slowly, Windows was slow to load and kept complaining of date and time settings. When I tried to change it in the BIOS setup, it wouldn’t change but after a series of restarting it would work. Also, at times it would be difficult to browse the system because open windows would be minimised. Although it is still possible to change the time and date at the taskbar but the clock would still be slow. I've tried changing the RAM twice and it’s still the same.

Any help would be welcome.

I am going to make some assumptions on what you’ve said here. I assume you are using some form of Windows OS and that your clock is still slow after adjustments. It doesn’t sound like just a CMOS battery issue, more like a virus. First though we need to know some things:

What OS are you using? E.g. Windows XP.

Do you have any anti-virus software INSTALLED?

You SAY that you have changed your hard drive; did you make a clean installation of Windows or just copy the files over to another hard drive?
If you reinstalled windows...

1. Chipset drivers? Did you install them before anything else?
2. no Graphics drivers can cause a system slowdown, jittering windows and scrolls.actually the hdd i replaced it with was 'ghosted' and i tried changing the date and time settings in setup and also changed the ram twice. the build uses windows xp but all things on it have been pre - installedXP is going to be slow on 256Mg of RAM...period.

Also if there were issues with the original Windows install the "image" has carried them over to the new install...I think that you mentioned that you also have a problem with date and time.
I suggest you to unplug your PC from power SUPPLY, wait 2-3 minutes and when your PC is started check for the date and time, if it is WRONG change the CMOS battery and the problem will be solved.
Cheers.
the cmos battery has been changed and the image has been used well over 30 times with no hassle...so wat could it be?Quote from: patio on April 13, 2009, 07:12:03 AM

we have a lot of pcs here with thesame components....neva eva been this slowThat may be true but this has always been my experience...issues with Date/Time persistence indicate either a dying BIOS battery or a failing/cheap power supply. Why the poll?Flash BIOS advice removed...

Solve : reinstalled Windows XP, but not drivers??

Answer»

I am so confused right now. I don't know much about computers so keep that in mind if you can help me. I reinstalled Windows XP for my inspiron laptop. I thought the drivers weresupposed to install automatically, but they didn't. I put the drivers CD in the CD drive and it said that I didn't need to install the drivers because they are already installed. What? I have nothing on my computer right now. The only things I really need at the MOMENT are sound and internet connection. I have wireless service and built-in wireless card. What do I need to do now? How can I get on the internet and have sound on my computer. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me with this problem. Thank you!The laptop should have shipped with a Driver CD...
Use this to re-install all drivers. Windows does not do this automatically as all drivers are different...

NOTE: MBoard/chipset drivers should go first.- Go to Dell Support
- Find the drivers correct for your system, you can either:
----- A. Enter the service tag on your computer. This is usually a string of 8 letters and numbers in a white square with SERVICE TAG: next to it, but your tag may differ.
----- B. Select your computer type, model number, and whatever other options they ask for.
- Download the wireless utility, Motherboard and chipset drivers and COPY that to a USB pen drive, Floppy, CD, or other external storage device.
- Install that on your computer; if the installation fails, you may have selected the wrong one. They often have two or three versions for the same laptop model; if you're not sure of the card types, you might have to just download them all. If you're lucky, there might only be one driver download for each item.
- Go through the process of selecting your computer model again with the installed network card and proceed to download the remainder of the drivers and install them.

Notes: You can download all the drivers at once and transfer them, but I find it easier to install the internet then download the updates. Why? Because Dell has MANY different types of drivers for the same model of laptop, and it's easier to use a trial-and-error method instead of downloading hundreds of megabytes just to get a few files. If you find that the selection is not a large one, you have fast internet (or a slow internet on the other computer), and/or a large storage device, you may choose to download them all at once. How do we know, it's Dell?Inspiron is a Dell brand.Ahh, well hidden info.....LOL
Good catch I have a DELL Inspiron 1501 which came with a drivers CD. You should also have a drivers CD. When you put this CD in, it installs a DELL Resource software. After the install it should automatically open the DELL Resource software and show you the drivers which are compatible with your system.

Solve : lost everything?

Answer»

I have a LAPTOP upstairs which i use for INTERNET access via usb wireless connection and other work. I have not been connected to the internet for a over a week but have used it nearly everyday for other work. Today when I switched my laptop on every file had gone and it was as though it was a brand new computer being used for the first time. All that was left was office, my network connection icon and anti virus. I still have to type in the password for my user account to log in. No one has touched my laptop and no new hardware has been installed. This has happened before but the next time I started the laptop up it went back to normal. Does anyone know what might have gone wrong and how i can restore my work? Can youdo a system restore? Can Voodoo Restore System
Most Probably So, But only Patio
Would Know for SureEvery file was gone? Are you sure no one else has had access to that computer?

Sounds like your hard drive is on it's way out. If you can restart and get your files again, back them up asap. The easiest way to accomplish this, would be to share the files on a network and save them to the other computer.

What antivirus are you using? This did happen before?
How was the ISSUE resolved?
Or was it?
On a number of laptops, maybe most, there is a rather simple way to wipe out all the work you have done and put the whole system back to the original factory load. A password may be preserved, but no documents or other work that the owner created. Does this fit in with what happened to you? Did you get a response from the manufacture of the laptop?
Hope we can be of some help.system restore checkpoint doesnt go back far enough.
The files are not of major importance just miffed into why this happened.
It is an old laptop which i got given and I am the only person who uses the laptop as the rest of the family use the main pc. Thanks for the help from everyone learnt a few things. Does there seem to be anything else wrong? Is it possible that you had two user accounts and you loged in on the new one, no the old one?
Or here is a huynch I just thought of.
If it only has one account, try making a new account. Log into the new account. Do a search for a partial file file name know will me part of the documents you created. Example: Search for photos with the word "Disney" in them to find your photos you took at Disneyland. The search looks also into all user areas and should find the photos no matter where the are.

It is posible you have some kind of virus, Perhaps you need to u[date the AV and do a scan. But You likely already did that.
well your hunch worked. i did a search for some pics and it was searching through folders that i previously had so knew they were around somewhere. went through few folders on my computer and they were hidden. thanks for the help! only have to add all my fav websites as they got deleted as well. POSSIBLY a virus which has hidden these files & folders?

Solve : I can't hear sound?

Answer»

wel...my operating system I am using is WINDOWS XP...
Some time ago by mistake I had erased my sound card software by mistake...now I have bought a new 1 and i hav installed it.I have EVEN update my driver and al...am hearing sound only on windows media player...I can't hear sound on my flv player neither online...!! Why is it so?
What should I do??
It would be very kind of you people if you could help me...
Thank you very much in advance and yes by the way my sound card is crystal cm8738Is its possible that your default soundcard is still set to your onboard card?

Try changing it in the sounds and audip devices portion in the device manager

Only other thing is that ypu have it set to quad speakers, and you have it PLUGGED into the reat set holeit should just be pnp unless it didnt which you may have to reset the card. Also, check the wireing most people dont read the manual but check with it. If you cannot hear sound only in one program when it will be an issue with the configuration of the application. Check in the preferences of the flv player for settings for audio. It may still be set to your old sound card for output. You may need to reconfigure the audio output settings.

Solve : format computer, and install new operating system?

Answer»

Microsoft is cutting off support for XP too, though- does that mean we should all MOVE to Vista?

Although the security issue, as well as the fact that most security software doesn't work on 98 means that 98 shouldn't be connected to the net.

As a computer that is used off the internet however it is still quite capable. And without the distraction of the net it might EVEN be possible to get some work done too Yes, but its not until April 2014 that Microsoft end their support for Microsoft Windows XP. That’s not exactly soon. I also did not say anything about moving to Vista. I personally hate Windows Vista OS. For all the hassle it would take to get this laptop fixed, they MAY as well buy a new one. And the laptop is for education purposes only. If it’s being used for school then most schools are moving to digital materials which would be hosted on the net. E.g, websites such as, Glow Scotland, Scholar, ETC. You have to move with the technology.

Solve : Gateway Solo 9150 backlight?

Answer»

I got my hands on an old Gateway Solo laptop and I'm trying to fix it up. The big issue is that the screen no longer lights up. I can see some action going on in the darkness and when I plug it into a monitor it works. What is the most likely culprit? I was THINKING of ordering an inverter for it, but is there another part that would be more likely to be broken?backlight.

Most LCDs have a flourescent backlight. Wether this can be replaced (cheaply, that is), I haven't a clue. The problem you're experiencing is usually caused by a bad LCD inverter...they are cheap and easy to replace.So- he was right then. Yes...

It could be a loose harness, but I've seen this particular inverter online for as low as $8 (USD).OK, so I got the inverter in the mail and it looks slightly DIFFERENT. How can I tell if it is a compatible model? I tried it out and it didn't fix the problem. So what's next? I have tried resetting the cables in their sockets as well. In my very limited knowledge I believe this leaves the cable and the light, correct?First off...CHECK with the company you purchased the inverter from to make sure you have the correct ONE...and whether or not it's DOA. Also, check the harness and light as you suggested. How would I know if it was DOA without replacing the other parts?

Please stop recommending a PAY program to find drivers...drivers are Free and that's not what we do here.
This is a Help Forum and we don't neccessarily want people pulling out their wallets for something that can be done with sound advice that costs nothing.
This is the 2nd time we've been thru this.OK patio i do APOLOGISE about that, but according to his dxdiag text, his soundcard driver is installed. He can install his sound card also if he is going to google the Hardware ID: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_2415&SUBSYS_56438086&REV_02 . At least this is my opinion, or he can go to driverguide site open an account, which is free and download the driver.
He said that he can not find a sound card driver from the link posted by quaxo
Because of that I'm suggesting him to do so.

Solve : Black Screen Shutdown?

Answer»

I own an IBM (now Leveno) ThinkPad TYPE 2886-5TU LAPTOP that I purchased in Nov 2004. It is running Windows XP Pro Version 2002 Service Pack 3. It is located on a desk in the same location since I purchased it. I clean it every 6 weeks including vacuuming all intake and exhaust ports. The battery is at the end of its life, since when I run it on battery power alone it quickly discharges. Over the past two months the computer will go to black screen with no warning. The only WAY I can get it back up is to hit the power button. When I start it up right away, it tends to repeat the black screen scenario, which leads me to believe that it is overheating. The fan seems to be running the same as always. I do not hear any unusual noises. When I get the computer running again, it will run for days/weeks before the problem reoccurs. Questions: Is there any other problem other than overheating that could be causing this problem? Is there any way to check to see if it is overheating? What is the computer doing when it goes to black screen? Is it going into "hibernation"? I have read about this but am not sure what it is. Is it possible that the battery is causing the problem? If the problem is overheating is the solution only to replace the fan?

Thank you in advance for your help.Well one thing to check is to go into Control Panel and open Power Options. Click on the Hibernate tab and check if hibernation is enabled and if enabled, when its set to go into hibernation.

Have you tried checking the Event Viewer? Some times problems like the one you are having are logged in the event viewer with either a yellow or red icon. Check the event viewer by going into the control panel, administrative tools and event viewer. Check for any entries which have yellow or red icons. If you remember roughly the time and date of when you last had this problem then look for any errors which occurred around that time. You can DOUBLE click on these entries to get more information. If you find an entire which you think could be the reported error for your problem then you can google search the error number which it gives you when you double click on its entry.Thank you very much for the information.

I checked the hibernation tab which indicates that it is enabled and what it does. It does not tell me when it is implemented. Would it happen without notice and if so, under what circumstances? Is powering on the way you are supposed to get a laptop out of hibernation?

I looked at the event viewer. This looks like a great tool. Since I do not remember when this last happened I could not correlate the events with the problem. I will be sure to check this the next time I have the problem.

Again, thank you.Your welcome

If hibernation is enabled, then hibernation normally occurs when the laptop is about to run out of battery power when the power cord is not plugged in, after 10 minutes of the screen saver, closing the lid over. You can change these settings by going into control panel and power options and in the Power Schemes tab, at the bottom there is SYSTEM hibernates. You can change these settings for when the laptops plugged in or running on batteries. You can also change hibernate settings in the Advanced tab. For example, When I close the lid of my portable computer: Hibernate. If you don't want hibernation then you can disable it completely by clicking the Hibernate tab and un check the Enable hibernate box then click on Apply, OK.

Hope this helps!

Solve : Problem W/ Display video?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a problem with my monitor.
Basically what i've done in control panel> Display > under the tab "settings", and clicked on the button "advanced". and within that, in the tab " ADAPTER", adapter type under properties, "general" tab, I accidentally disabled the device USAGE. and restarted my computer. after this was done, my computer was able to turn on but not able to display my desktop. Now i cant go back and see my desktop. is there a way to change this back??
#1 - Boot into safe mode and try to fix it there ( Might have to alter REGISTRY setting if you cant mofidy the display properties.)

# 2 - If you have a VIDEO card installed, plus integrated video...remove the better AGP, PCI, or PCIe video card and boot off of integrated to gain your display back.

# 3 - If your system has integrated video and no additional better video card installed, borrow or buy a video card to gain access to the system with video support. This action would only affect the device selected and new video devices would INITIALIZE with their new properties.

# 4 - Perform Windows Repair from OEM CD ( this will be drastic...you could lose data and wilh have to reinstall applications.)

(((BTW: What were you trying to achieve in there playing with this setting???)))

Solve : Motherboard help?

Answer»

Ok well I am starting to get into gaming so i wanted to buy a new graphics card. When i opened my computer to see what kind of slots i have i only have pci slots. There are no pcie slots. What should i do. Should I buy a new motherboard and risk the blue screen? Or is there such thing as a good pci graphic card for gaming? Any help or links would be nice thanksIf you have only PCI slots then your Motherboard is a cheapo and I wouldnt use it for gaming since it was manufactured as a lower end board for regular home or office computing without rendering games as its intent.

Depending on your computer sometimes you can install a new motherboard into the original case and most of the time with lower end machines they are built intently to become throwaways with motherboards specific to the build and not universal.

The other gotcha that I see so many people do is if the case will take the motherboard upgrade the power supply rated for just 240 Watts can not supply the power output needed for the new motherboard that requires 350 watts minimum at which I suggest 400+ Watts. If you are going to run a higher end VIDEO card your wattage requirement could climb into the 600 or 700 watt range to avoid smoking the power supply.

Those who are not up to par with the hardware and requirements and can not afford to take the smoke show risk, I suggest buying a new computer with warranty and a PCIe slot available to take that better video card ( but still make sure the power supply has enough wattage to take the increased GPU power load.) Most computer shops / stores will allow you to open the case of the floor models to look inside and see if it really has a PCIe slot for example without getting it home and realizing OH CRAP this system is a P.O.S lower end STRIPPED model.

Long time ago I BOUGHT a monster HP Pavilion tower for $700 at STAPLES on clearance and got it home to find out that the motherboard didnt have a AGP slot to take a better video card. Instead you saw the silk screen layout with solder plugged in the holes where one could have been, but this was the lower end motherboard build with only PCI slots. Tried to take it back and couldnt because of Clearance purchase and ended up selling it for $300 to buy a better machine with the 8x AGP slot. And at Radio Shack I opened up the computer to confirm that the Compaq Presario 6030 had a 8x AGP slot and that I wasnt going to get robbed againand avoided the clearance computer as well that they had there. This clearance system the HP btw also already had been registered under the previous owner and had games installed on it that didnt require the CD and wouldnt run on the integrated video. Thats how crappy this Pavilion was. Lesson learned ( Be very careful with clearance purchases and its best to spend the extra $100 for a new system, and open it up to make sure you like its innards as well before buying.) Generally they will allow for the floor models to be cracked open, but the new in box systems they wont because it voids the mfr warranty. The PCI Local Bus is common in modern PCs, where it has displaced ISA and VESA Local Bus as the standard expansion bus, and it also appears in many other computer types. Despite the availability of faster interfaces such as PCI-X and PCI Express, conventional PCI remains a very common interface.
So don't feel to unlucky..

Solve : Problem setting up local wireless network?

Answer»

I have installed a Sweex LW057v2 (Wireless LAN PCI) card. It receives a SIGNAL and all the info seems to be there (IP address; DNS server...). But I get the error message: 'Page cannot be DISPLAYED' and ' Cannot find server'.

Any ideas why it isn’t working, or what diagnostic / correction steps I could take.

Have you setup the Wireless Network in Control Panel ? ?I have checked, it says the computer is connected to a wireless connection.

But I still have the error message - Page cannot be displayed and Cannot find server.

So what can I do next?Set up the Wireless connection in Control Panel...
It will show a good connection even if you have skipped this important step...

Solve : Computer won't boot when cold?

Answer»

This problem started about a week ago and has been getting worse.
I won’t boot after being left off over night. It will boot after installing the backup (takes 5 min. from time to inserting disk to reboot). It’s booted once after waiting for it to warm up for a few minutes. Boots fine if turned off for a few hours but once it reaches room temp wont. I don’t think it’s a software problem as I’ve reinstalled windows after reformatting. I’ve switched the memory into the other slots and no diff there. I’ve checked all my plugs and components to be sure they are seated properly.
I built this computer in Nov 06 with no problems. I added the 2nd raptor a month ago. So the big change is using the RAID controller and a second hard drive
Today I tried waiting to warm up again but only got past the windows splash screen and power to the USB ports.
SO…Power supply? Motherboard? Cables? A piece of silicone? Hard drive?
WIN 7 running on:
Asus P5N-E SLI motherboard
Intel E6600 dual core CPU
EVGA 8800GTX DX10 Graphics card
2 Gigs of Corsair DDR-2 PC 6400, EPP CERTIFIED.
2 WESTERN DIGITAL WD1500AHFD 150GB RAPTOR SATA in RAID 0
1Tb HITACHI hard drive
Sound Blaster gamer X-FI Titanium Fatality Pro.
650-watt power supply

Is the Hitachi your boot drive?

Where exactly in the boot process does it stop? Can you GET into BIOS when it's cold?I found this.....

I STILL don't know if it was the thermal paste on the heatsink or the new power supply she installed but combined they solved the problem she was having....Sound familiar?

Solve : EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE IS GOING CRAZY?

Answer»

I have a simpletech external harddrive (re)drive and for a little bit it seemed to have a problem because it would eject itself randomly, and then after a while it just would not open and a pop up would say "drive is not formatted, do you want to format it now?" No matter what EVERY TIME i OPENED it i would get this message. Then finally i decided to take the loss of information and just reformat. It took 2 days and then it said there was an error and now i cant click on it at all. If i go to my computer and right click on the (re)drive and hit explore a message comes up that says "f:/ drive is not accessible error with Inpage operation. PLEASE HELPSound like it bit the dust to me. When it ejected your DISK without prompting is a good sign it went bye bye. Check your cables and see if it shows up in your BIOS. If it does show it may be more complicated. You could use your install disk to format outside of your OS.take a visit to disk management with the disk connected.

GO down to the external drive letter.

What is it listed as? any PARTITIONS?

Solve : Multiple problems booting + gpu?

Answer»

My computer stopped booting up today. I've been having problems for a long time now with my computer booting up, it would take multiple tries where I could hear the fans inside going at what seemed to be maximum speed, when this would happen it would stay powered on but stuck there, never loading the BIOS. I'd just force a restart until it worked, which I could detect easily as when it worked the fans would slow down right after it was powered on. Also for about a month now my monitor wouldn't receive a signal from my computer until the Vista loading SCREEN comes up.

So the past few days I had noticed some issues with my GPU (evga geforce 7900gs ko) it started when I was PLAYING a video game, the screen would get bright COLORED pixelated.. static I guess and I was able to just switch out of the game and it would be fine. Then it got to where just watching videos would cause problems, only with videos the display would just loose the signal for a second. Then I'd get an error from Vista saying there was a driver error (I had just installed the latest version).

Because of all this, I opened up my case this afternoon and thought I'd just clean off some parts, as it collects quite a bit of dust in there, hoping that would fix this. After cleaning off everything I could get to, I closed it back up and now it will not boot up at all. First it was just like before, getting stuck at the beginning with the fans going full speed, only after about 20 attempts I realized I probably wasn't going to get a good start. Eventually it stopped even going that far, after trying to boot the computer would shut itself down and the power button's light began blinking.

I'm at a loss as to what the problem is. I tried taking out the graphics card (my computer came with a crappy integrated card as well) to see if that was the issue. My only other theory is that it's the PSU. That's the only other part I've replaced since buying the computer. It seems that all the booting problems came shortly after I started using it.

My specs:
eMachines T6524 (specs in link)
Running Windows Vista x64 w/latest SP & Updates

My only modifications are an extra GB of RAM, an EVGA nVidia GeForce 7900GS KO, and Thermaltake PurePower W0070 430-Watt Power Supply with Dual Fans.Could be that the new power supply is the problem. The eMachines link shows no info about your machine.Quote from: patio on April 14, 2009, 06:51:17 AM

The eMachines link shows no info about your machine.
Yes it does, just click the specifications link there in the page and it will EXPAND, showing all the specs.Playing that golf thingy will make you totally BLIND one day.....

[attachment deleted by admin]No it won't...
At any rate what MBoard is in that eMachine ? ?
Other than the PSU which you replaced my first suspect would be the MBoard.
I wouldn't throw any more cash at this machine...Doesn't the image posted show you the Mobo? I figured chipset=motherboard. If it's not listed there, I don't know. And yes, I realize the computer is outdated, but I can't afford a new computer quite yet.2 things I am constantly replacing since 1982. Power supplies and CD/DVD drives.you might try replacing your bios battery. But it really sounds like the power supply to me also. I just cleaned out my computer and found lots of junk clogging up the inside of my power supply so i took it apart and cleaned that out too. but if that's the case it's probably too late. You should get another PS that you can return, such as from Frys or such. Thanks for the replies everyone. I was able to find my old PSU that originally came with the desktop, and it still was not working. The only improvement was that it would startup and hang there indefinitely, and not powering off with the blinking power button.

Solve : boot up issue?

Answer»

My OS is win xp, w/ intel pentium and maxor HD. HARD drive by itself? boots up fine, but when i hook up cd-rom or floppy it wont boot and goes to that "problem booting up choose device and reboot bla bla" screen. I check bios and basically it DOESNT see hard drive if any other device is plugged in at same time. I think ive narrowed it down to hard drive. because no matter where i plug the jumper in, it only shows up as secondary slave. IE: plug jumper into DS master position and still shows it as slave
Does this problem sound familiar or repairable to anyone? or am i stuck having to REPLACE hard drive? It would help if you told use just what kind of computer you have.
Laptop? Desktop? Tower? SFF?
New? Old?
I will just assume you have a normal ATX motherboard that has dual chn IDE for the hard drive. Common practice is to put the HDD on one and the CD-Drive on the other. That way it always works, even it the devices are not pinned right.

So how do YU "plug-in" a floppy? Is this a laptop? Which?I also had the same problem with my DELL Optiplex GX260 which had a Maxtor Diamond Max Plus 8 40 GB hard drive. The hard drive was not recognized when CD and Floppy drives were connected at the same time. The only SOLUTION I found was to replace the hard drive. I swapped the hard drive with a hard drive out of one of my old systems. The DELL Optiplex GX260 now works fine and the hard drive is detected without a problem. It could also be a problem with your power supply in your system. You said that it only powers up the hard drive when you remove other devices? This shows it may be the power supply. The power supply may not be able to power up the hard drive because of the other connected drives.Thank You Geek I used dual IDE and everything is hunky dory. and next time i'll be sure to give all the proper info. thanx again for taking the time to help me.

Solve : Screen stuck at 1024x768??

Answer»

Hello to all Newbie here with my first post and wondering if anyone can offer any advice. (I'm familiar with how forums like this work and am a site Moderator on one of my car related ones, so I'm NORMALLY the one handing out advice many times a day, but with computers I'm not very good .

Machine in question is a 1 year old, bog standard Acer Aspire 5633 LAPTOP with a 15.4 widescreen display.

Just under a week ago I switched on as normal but the screen had shrunk leaving a large black border down the right and a thin black strip at the bottom. Upon investigation it had changed from the usual 1280x800 to 1024x768.

Now I've had intermittent success with changing it back by going to Control Panel > Device manager and re-installing the Display Adapter (Mobile Intel (R) 945GM Express Chipset Family), and also re-installing the Monitor Driver (Generic PnP Monitor) and after switching off and back on again, sometimes it restores back to 1280x800 but as soon as it's turned off and I come back to it the next day, it's shrunk again. Also, this procedure doesn't work everytime and more often than not it doesn't help. I don't know if they are the proper names for them, I'm just going on what it says on the screen?

This laptop's been fine for over a year and I've not changed anything whatsoever on it to make this happen, it's just come out of the blue?

Totally lost here, and I'm not very good with the technicalities of computers - I can use the software I need for my job, but that's about it.

Any help or explanations would be greatly appreciated, and if you need any further info help diagnose the problem, I'll try and find it out

Thanks
Mark
I will ASSUME you tried going into Control panel>Display>Settings then adjust your settings.

I will assume you tried going into Control panel>Display>Settings then adjust your settings.

Alternatively, could you do a system restore to a point before your problems began?

I've tried the first suggestion, yes but it's giving the maximum I can go to as still being 1024x786.

How would I go about doing the system restore, PLEASE ? (I reckon I'd only need to go back a week as it was fine up to then)

Thanks Here's some info to get you going.... http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/using-windows-vista-system-restore/Many thanks for that, I'll have a read through it
You're most welcome....Good Luck....it's pretty straightforward.

Solve : my webcam is delayed?

i had purchased a WEB cam that has a frequency of 60hz and it is 5 m pixel ...when i TALK my video that i see and others see is delayed.

are there settings i can change in windows vista for this?

if not what can i do to fix it.

the camera is BRAND new and has a mic built in.

This is KNOWN commonly as "lag"...
Unless you and all other parties have a super fsat web connection...like the Military or Government it's gonna happen...you can try go to the camera's make website get help or buy a new one or ur pc screen reloading is slowQuote from: kamz1245 on April 15, 2009, 12:46:29 PM

you can try go to the camera's make website get help or buy a new one or ur pc screen reloading is slow

HuH ? ?heh ok yea i have lag with it. my screen is fine heh 2 milli-second refresh and its at 75 hz...thats not the problem. my internet connection is 20 Mbit plenty fast.

the camera is the problem i think. Although i dont know where to go on vista for the video camera settings. there prob is no place for these settings other then external software.

i guess ill buy a different one. the camera was from ebay and shipped from china for only 18 dollars.

the company i believe is called " Times classic"

oh well thanks anywayWhat service are you using for video chat? If it's something like Windows Live Messenger or Yahoo Messenger, this lag is normal and there's not much you can do it about it. It also depends on your connection speed as well as the speed of the person you're sharing video with.there are several things to be considered here.

20Mb is 20 Megabits a second.

a typical web cam usually delivers AROUND a res of 640*480. this is really FAR less then 5 megapixels, in fact it's a third of a megapixel- but it'll do for the comparision.

640 * 480 resolution, multiply by 32 bits (4 bytes) and you get a total storage space of 1,228,800 bytes.

This is a single frame. a conservative frames per second would be 24. so, in a single second, your webcam, at a LOW resolution of 640x480, must push 29,491,200 bytes of data to the PC every second. the PC, in turn, must push thos amount through your 20 M-bit connection.

a 20 megabit connection is 20 million bits. this is equal to 2,500,000 bytes.

Now, doing the math, we see that 20 megabits of speed is not quite fast enough- 2,500,000 versus over 29,491,200 bytes- and I was being conservative,- if your web-cam is actually set using the 5 megapixel resolution, then you'll end up with 5 million, times 4, or 20 million bytes for a single frame. multiply this by another conservative 24 frames per second to come up with the collosal 480 million bytes that your webcam, if you were to have "lag free" viewing, must push through your 2.5 million byte connection. As patio said- you need an industrial strength web connection- nothing a consumer can get. and even if you had that- that 480 million bytes is over 8 times higher then the maximum bandwidth limit for USB, which is 480 megabits.

And so you see, not only is 20 megabits not "plenty", but really it's impossible with modern technology to get "lag free" viewing of webcam images.

Go to google and search your camera related drivers.A cheap webcam like this is normally like this.

Try this though.

Without accessing the camera at all, jus having it connected, go into control panel and select all control panel items...there should be one either called scanners and cameras or Devices.

It should bring up your camera in a window when you double click it, and see there if it is lagg free.

Solve : BFG NVIDIA FX 5500 Fan is having difficulty moving?

Answer»

Hi there everyone. I have a fairly old computer, and I just noticed this morning that it's graphics fan was not spinning. I have no idea how long it has been like this, but somehow it has managed to go along without frying its self. I was able to push it a little, (with the power on,) and it would start spinning, but no where near as fast as it should be spinning.

Anyways, I'm looking for a way to get this fan spinning again. I'd rather not have to buy a new fan/graphics card since this is an old computer anyways, (no need to put any money into it,) but if worse comes to worse, I guess I could. I think the best route would be to grease it. I've taken it out, and from my reearch, people say I should peel back sticker on it and apply some kind of grease to the tip of the rotating portion of the fan that you see under the sticker. I've got that planned out, but it's the exact kind of grease I should be using that I'm confused on. I have WD-40, 3 in 1 multipurpose grease, as well as some others, but what should I use?

If someone could name an exact brand and type of grease that I should use, that would be great.

And here are some specs:

Computer brand: Custom
Motherboard: Asus A7V8X-X
Graphics card info: NVIDIA GeForce FX5500 w/ 128MB of ram, I just replaced this card around a year and a half ago.

If anymore info is needed, by all means please ask for it.

Thanks!

~TGP1994Grease won't work, the bearings are sealed or probably worn out. Should have lasted more than a year or two. Is the graphics card out of warranty? If yes, then get a replacement fan.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=+40000576&QksAutoSuggestion=&ShowDeactivatedMark=False&Configurator=&Subcategory=-1&description=fans+and+heatsinks&Ntk=&CFG=&SpeTabStoreType=&srchInDesc=Actually, I took a grease bottle meant for an old sewing machine in my house, and put a drop at the bottom of what looked like the rotating point of the fan. Now it's working perfectly. But thanks for your help That's good stuff, see how long it lasts spinning at 3000rpm.Wait... are you saying it won't? I also have this 3in1 multipurpose thing, maybe that would work with this solution doesn't later on.

I am concerned though, I have downloaded SpeedFan, and it's reading 0 degrees C from my graphics card, (which I'm assuming means it isn't reading it at all,) and it's also reading an 86 degrees C for a temp 3 on my Asus A7V8X-X motherboard. Any ideas what Temp 3 is?Access your BIOS screens upon a restart and see whether any screen shows temperatures. If it does, you may be able to correlate that with what SpeedFan shows. IOW, it may give you a clue to what Temp3 is.Quote from: tgp1994 on October 17, 2009, 05:42:03 PM

Wait... are you saying it won't? I also have this 3in1 multipurpose thing, maybe that would work with this solution doesn't later on...
Fan bearings are non-lubricated, oil is a temporary fix.Remove the card and bring it with you to a PC store...
They'll probably be able to match up a replacement fan for about 5 to 8 Bucks...

PS. 3 in 1 oil has acid in it...not a good idea. This article, Quiet noisy computer fans with a drop of oil, recommends sewing machine oil. The article also has a good description, with illustrations, of how to do it. yes, Noisy fans that are otherwise working fine... not broken fans whose bearings are no longer lubricated properly

I had a fan fail with the a BFG 5500FX also. Not sure what happened, the fan itself was literally at an angle to the heatsink, and the fan wouldn't even go back on at all. I managed to unscrew the fan and install the fan from my PCI 6200FX... but I suppose I was lucky I had spares .

At the same time however- I did use the card without major incident for a few months afterward, by underclocking the card to the standard, reference nvidia speed for the 5500FX (mine was factory OC'd), and everything worked fine for me (games, applications, etc) so I suspected a failed OC on the manufacturers part, until I went to replace the HD and FOUND the condition of the fan.Ooh, I love logging in and seeing LOTS of replies, thanks for your input everyone

Ya, I checked out my BIOS screen, there doesn't seem to be any such temperature as a 3rd temperature. One thing that nags at me is the fact that SpeedFan wasn't detecting any temps for the GFX card, so could it be possible it was misdetecting it as temp 3? I am kind of disappointed that my BIOS doesn't have any kind of fan control either, my computer is noisy as heck. And it seems like the mobo versions after mine started comming with some kind of control. I have the latest, even beta bios, as well.

I'll make sure I avoid 3-in-1, thanks. Ya, maybe I could bring it into a store and get another graphics card fan, but then I have to consider things like; I've had this computer for years, should I just go for an upgraded card, or even an entirely new computer? Oh well, I'll cross that bridge once I get to it.

@soybean: I'm glad I CHOSE the right thing, I can't image what would have happened if I got impatient like usual and went with something else

@BC_Programmer: Ya, like I said, I had to get a replacement awhile ago, b/c of the fan, but I kind of regret now that I didn't bother checking the fan and at least preserving the card a little bit longer. I love BFG, they just SENT me an email saying I could still RMA this card. Props to them.

Solve : XP not detecting USB devices?

Answer»

Hi,

I have Panasonic CF-29 that I am trying to fix for my sister. There is no volume. XP does not recognize a sound card. I am not sure if the LAPTOP has a sound card. I never opened up a laptop case. So I prefer not to open the case unless I have to. I bought an external sound card and XP doest recognize it. My PC recognized the sound card. I connected a USB mice and an IPod and XP didn't recognize it either. So there is a problem with USB port. According to ITunes, the previous owner connected their IPod 2 months ago. So the UBS port was working 2 months ago. Any ideas? Will an internal sound card fix the problem? I already updated the chipset. And uninstalled all the devices under USB System controller in Device Manager.Go to the manufacturer's website and download all drivers and reinstall them.

Most (if not all) laptops don't have a replaceable/upgradeable sound card.

As for whether or not it already has one, it does:
SigmaTel™ STAC9751 AC-97 v.2.2 Compliant Audio Codec- Intel® high definition audio compliantThis is no sound card in a laptop. It is part of the motherboard and can not be replaced. The USB ports MAY have been damaged. Try eevery USB port with an USB device. It ncan take up to 30 seconds for a device to be recgnized.

Does the laptop have a PC card slot? (Also called PCMCIA card.)This thread is a continuation...Quote from: Geek-9pm on September 12, 2011, 12:00:30 AM

This is no sound card in a laptop. It is part of the motherboard and can not be replaced.

Some do. My Toshiba (can't remember model, about 10 years ago) had a (if I remember right) C-Media one that could actually be removed and replaced with an identical one if needed without REPLACING anything else. My girlfriend's Toshiba Libretto U100 also had a removable/replaceable sound card. Neither could be upgraded THOUGH, as the size/shape of the cards are proprietary to those systems, but like I said, either could have been replaced if you did something like broke the volume control or a jack (both things were directly connected to the cards). Provided you could find a replacement. I have seen others in laptops I worked on (non-Toshiba) that have a similar "sound card".Panasonic said that I have a sound card. So looks like my laptop has a chip sound card. I already went to the manufactures website and updated the drivers. Yes I do have PC card slot. I only have 1 USB port. I might just buy a docking station to connect the external sound card. Anyone know how to restore to factory settings without a CD. I pressed F11 during boot up but nothing happened.

5. When the graphics cards say Directx9 can I upgrade them online to the most recent version or will I just be hosed?
...
1. I agree.
2. Memory type on graphics card has no relationship to memory type on motherboard. Yes.
3. No.
4. Depends on what the Dell Dimension 2400 supports. See: www.crucial.com
5. No.If I read your specs right you only have a 200 watt power supply. That's not enough power for most add in graphics cards. 64MB of video RAM is fairly standard on recent computers, but not enough for many of the newer games.

Crucial is a great source for checking what RAM you have and what you could add, and you could use more RAM. Their prices aren't always the cheapest, but they are not bad, and their customer service is excellent. And I don't say that about many companies.I would invest in a new system myself if you want to do modern GAMING beyond WoW's capabilities. I have a friend who is still gaming WoW on a 1.8Ghz P4 single-core with an 8x AGP ATI Radeon card with 256MB Ram, and the system running on 1GB Ram. He has to avoid certain areas where his frame rate goes from about 12-20 frames per second to 6 frames per second.

That single-core Pentium 4 2.2Ghz is going to be a huge bottleneck. Even a cheap modern single-core such as the Sempron 145 ($35 CPU New) which is 2.8Ghz beats the pants off of that P4. I know because I upgraded my wife from a 2.66Ghz P4 to a Sempron 145 2.8Ghz after first checking what it benchmarked at passmark cpu benchmark data and it screams for a single-core. Of course 2,3,4, and 6 core CPU's are better, in which I have a quad-core AMD Athlon II x4, if you have a tight budget for about $120 you can build a cheap modern system, and put in a decent video card where most of todays games depend greatly on. But your DELL XP OS probably wont migrate over to the new motherboard so your also having to look into buying an OS for it.

If your lucky that Dell has an AGP slot that will take a 8x AGP video card and you can upgrade the power supply to 450 watts minimum, but it still wont have the throughput necessary to play most modern games without low frame rate or errors trying to run. My wifes system I basically replaced motherboard, CPU, and Ram and kept everything else the same old parts. That 160GB IDE drive is still plenty for her. And fortunately she already had a 450 watt power supply in it and I had my second hand PCIe videocard to stuff into it for her and her WoW gaming needs, which is just a GeForce 8400GS with 512MB Ram. She is running Win XP Pro on 2GB Ram also.

Total cost for that upgrade was like $35 for Sempron 145 2.8Ghz AM3 45watt CPU + $60 for Biostar AM3 motherboard + $20 for 2GB Patriot DDR2 800Mhz Ram stick = $115... and if I didnt go as cheap as i could go, I could have installed an Athlon II x2 for $65 instead of going with the $35 Sempron Single-core, but she doesnt need that extra power, I will probably have a Hand-me-down AM3 quad-core for her in the future when I move on to x6 or larger processing. The first time she hopped onto that madern low end single core she was in heaven with how fast it was compared to the pentium 4 she had prior. *She doesnt know I went cheap on it, but she does know that I have the better system since mine does run faster...lolThanks alot to everybody for the input in response to Dave you're saying that a newer processor is faster because of the FSB speed right? I thought about replacing the whole lot but then the only thing I would be keeping is the case and that seems a little superfluous especially since my hard drive is only 60Gb. With the addition of most likely putting in an new OS which I'm not familiar with doing and the fact that most of the buying of parts would be over the internet. I'm the kind of person who likes to look at things before I buy them. If I were to stay with the motherboard I have it only supports single core so I'm going to upgrade the RAM to 2Gb and save up for a better gaming rig that I can upgrade in the future. I mostly play minecraft on this thing but the framerate was all ready pathetic and when I modded the game the framerate dropped to 0to7 instead of twenty. When I tried to get this basic input that you guys were so NICE to provide from computer stores they all wanted to screw me by saying just bring it in and we'll test it. When I go to get a new computer I will buy it new but skimp on things like ram as long as it has the room for more and put it in myself I figure I can save a couple hundred if I do everything I can do myself after I buy it. You guys think thats a good idea? Most new out of the box computers will require no additional RAM or anything else. Win7-32bit will have 2-3GB, Win7-64bit will have a minimum of 4GB. All will be DDR3 which is the latest & least expensive.Quote from: Jareth on September 11, 2011, 02:14:36 PM

A few points:

Minecraft is written in java. The java VM (even the 64-bit version for some reason) seems to act weird after a program allocates about a GB or so of memory. running MC for a while usually breaks this.
-You could try the Optifine mod which tries to speed things up a bit.
-Mods are, with the exception of the above, usually very badly optimized. They are written by 16 year olds, largely, so that isn't surprising.

-If you are using the leaked 1.8 prerelease- that's got some weird memory issues too.

The game itself is more dependent on CPU than Memory. OTOH, it's going to need memory to work otherwise you'll be swapping all over. 2GB with win7 or vista would be pushing it, I think.

The above is on the assumption you are talking about minecraft, and not creative mode minecraft, which featured neither mining nor crafting.I was talking about the real minecraft not creative mode and I frequent a few minecraft forums. I think because my computer runs it just not well that if I ramp up the ram from 512Mb to 2Gb like I plan to in the near future it should run smoothly enough until I get a better computer. Minecraft wants 1Gb of ram out of the gate which is absurd to look at when playing the game. I have tried optifine and it doesn't seem to help. I agree with your assesment about mods but minecraft without it is boring fast. I'm smart enough not to use any leaked versions when Im already having problems particularly when the modders have done more for the game than Notch has or will. With Notch adding in Millenaire into the core experience the game is wrecking peoples computers with 2 to 4Gbs of ram. I just hope when I upgrade the ram I will be able to play it worth a hill of beans until I get a gaming rig to beef up. Quote
I frequent a few minecraft forums.
Alright- but, what is your point? So do I (?)

Minecraft wants 1Gb of ram out of the gate

Minecraft normally loads up to 9 chunks around you, or 81 chunks. each chunk is 16x16x128, with a bit more than 2 bytes per block (one byte for the block type (1-255) and one byte for the skylight and data (4 bits each). another 4 bits for block generated light values, and another 256 bytes per chunk for the heightmap data.

This brings the grand total of data per chunk to 82,176, multiplied by 81 you've got 6 Megabytes of data that needs to be handled. On top of that you have the fact that java doesn't allow for the immediate destruction of memory data at a determinate point and that the classes that manage said data need to be instantiated, as well as data to be stored for entities, and other blocks that have entity data (like chests, note blocks, furnaces, and so forth). And of course items like tooltip text and item NAMES being stored as immutable strings. It's the java VM that is "using" the memory, not necessarily minecraft. a good quarter of the memory associated with javaw when MC is running is probably discarded data waiting to be gc'd. the other quarter is probably kernel-mode memory used by the OpenGL driver.

Quote
which is absurd to look at when playing the game.
Not of the sort minecraft is. Games like crysis and stuff have precomputed geometry and optimized poly counts for everything. for MC every single visible block is going to add about 2 poly's on average, and with a lot of scenes you're looking at several thousand blocks. And that is just the Graphics driver side of the equation, you've still got the copious amount of loaded chunks being loaded/unloaded as you travel.

Quote
but minecraft without it is boring fast.
For you, maybe. I got bored of mods, myself. Why? Because they are all programmed terribly. I have a fecking quad-core and the damned things make it feel like it did to play quake on my P-133. I've always ended up reverting to pure vanilla.

Quote
when the modders have done more for the game than Notch has or will.
No, they haven't. All the modders I "know" are all elitist douchebags. It's not hard at all to mod Minecraft, given a little basic java knowledge.

Quote
With Notch adding in Millenaire into the core experience
They aren't... they are adding their own. Millenaire itself is pretty badly optimized. An interesting (if unoriginal) concept, but badly executed, really.

Personally, there are only two situations I've had where MC has had problems. After installing mods like the yogbox (good mod, terrible implementation), or with the 1.8 prerelease after leaving the game running for about 18 hours at the title screen. And this is with a ~2Ghz dual core laptop as well, which runs both fine.

While your opinions are your own right I think the only one sounding like an "elitist douchebag" is yourself. Minecraft by itself BLOWS if it's so easy to make good mods then why are you not blowing the other modders out of the water? Like Vintron said in the chat room the other day "java has it's place but NOT in gaming". The point of bringing up the minecraft forums is that Notch refuses to tell you system requirements because far less people would buy the game. The people on the forums were the ones who told me it needs at least 1Gb of ram to run smoothly and some of them have 4Gbs and are still having fps issues. Sure there is alot of rendering going on but when Game Informer said you enter the game with hilariously low res textures and no idea what to do I figured my old computer should be able to play said textures without so many problems. If I had known java script was such a kunt I wouldn't have wasted my time and have you seen the 1.8 leak it's a complete train wreck The features hes added are lame and don't even work yet. It's bleak to know that when he does get all the bugs ironed out the game will still suck. If I need a new gaming rig just to play minecraft with more than 15 fps I would just play a better game. First, Kodaichi purposely places malicious code in his mods so that specific people can't play them. That's being a douchebag.

Second, I've seen their code. Their is a good reason they are modding a pre-existing game and not writing one of their own.

Third, I never claimed I wasn't an elitist douchebag. It takes one to know one, I suppose.

Then he's a dumbass. The programming language has nothing to do with the result. Arguing about what programming language is better than another is like arguing over the colour of blueprint paper that should be used for a house. It won't make a difference when it comes to the end result.

The point of bringing up the minecraft forums is that Notch refuses to tell you system requirements because far less people would buy the game.
First, you are clearly one of those people who seem to think there is only "Notch" working on it (this is common, for some reason). For one thing, he isn't even working on minecraft at the moment, only Jeb_ is, and second, the reason he's never given a system requirement is because he has no idea what would be required. Additionally, the differences between different versions make it a ballpark guess at best. And it's just silly to assume that no value is given for marketing reasons. In fact that's downright absurd.

It runs fine on my 3 year old laptop, anybody who thinks it's "simpler" than your average game on the basis that somehow the construction of cubes is easier than anything else is wrong, because it's not. a rolling hill in a game could easily consist of far fewer polygons, vertex, and normal surface data (if not texture-mapping data) than a minecraft landscape of similar proportions.

Either way, the wiki has taken upon the task of trying to assemble some comparisons of performance with different systems. Nearly all the listed systems using a integrated card fare badly, probably because if Intel's more or less Software implementation of OpenGL.

a lot of the people on the forums are 14-year old technological dilettantes. But they are right, it likely would require more than 1GB of RAM. I only have two systems available to test with (a 3 year old laptop with 4GB and a newer desktop with 8GB) and they seem to run it fine. Then again, neither of them is 10 years old, either.

Quote
Sure there is alot of rendering going on but when Game Informer said you enter the game with hilariously low res textures and no idea what to do I figured my old computer should be able to play said textures without so many problems.

Ahh, so this is the course of events:

-Gaming magazine with the summary technical knowledge of a bowl of walnuts says game uses "hilarious low res textures"

-you assume that game runs fine on your ~10-year old system, which was a value-oriented system even at the time of it's introduction, despite them not saying anything about the other million factors of a game that contribute to what is processed. a "hilariously low res texture" (16x16 pixels) on 1679616 blocks (that would be the number of block surfaces required to render when all 81 chunks are visible on far distance, on a perfectly flat surface no less) would still mean pushing 768 bytes (assuming 16x16 at true color for the textures, which the textures.png backs up) 1679616 times, meaning that the GPU has to churn out about 128959488 bytes per frame. Warranted, optimizations in the rendering of MC would reduce that to a single tiled texture rather then setting the material for every single block (rather, groups of colinear faces with the same texture will be made into a single face with that texture tiled across it's surface the appropriate number of times). But the minecraft landscape is hardly flat; even the savannah biome doesn't usually have flat areas bigger then a chunk or two. And in your case, the Graphics card is your CPU, and with a single core that CPU is also dealing with everything in the background as well, so you end up with far more context switches and kernel-mode/user mode switches that it's no wonder it doesn't run that well. No modern game, regardless of language, would run very well on such a system, unless it used a 10 year old game engine.

I rather like hunger, strongholds, and abandoned mineshafts, and critical hits, and the new bow mechanic (I know actually use a bow, for one thing) and how the arrows stick in mobs. Something satisfying about impaling a creeper's face with an arrow. the mineshaft spawn rate is way above what it will be when actually finished, too, likely for testing. Ravines look bloody awesome. Only issue I have with it is those bloody blue spiders, which have at least in part made me more careful when navigating said abandoned mines. And the furnace bug that crashes the game, but that only happens after you exploit the dupe bug. (and both of these have been fixed in the version that will be released, as well as most of the other bugged issues (like waaaay too many mineshafts). It is, however, a pre-release.

Quote
It's bleak to know that when he does get all the bugs ironed out the game will still suck.
Mojang. Not Notch. Jeb_/Jens is the one preparing 1.8 for release, not Notch. Notch is working on something that was probably a contractual obligation. And whether the game sucks is purely subjective. Obviously you are allowed to think it does, just as I am allowed to dismiss your arguments as wrong and invalid based on their lack of anything but emotional creedence. I think the creative/classic mode "sucks" too, but certainly not technologically (moreso in that it lacks both mining and crafting, which is a bit weird)
Quote
If I need a new gaming rig just to play minecraft with more than 15 fps I would just play a better game.
And yet, here you are, talking about building a new computer for minecraft. I'd like to say I build this machine for minecraft, but I actually built it for VS 2008, which I ironically said the exact same things you are saying about minecraft for until I was able to run it. It's software envy, I guess.

Another thing to try, might be to dual boot a Linux distro. some people report minecraft running a bit better there, which I suspect is because their linux install is a lot newer than their windows one, but it get's the job done and is far less invasive than reinstalling windows itself from scratch. (I've personally noticed no real difference between Win7 and Mint 10 as far as Minecraft's speed is concerned, though, but YMMV.)

As for framerate, *queue old man voice* back in the day I used to play quake on a Pentium 133, which was well past the recommended requirements for the game. Average FPS was 12, iirc. I can't be bothered to check again. the passive matrix screen is almost painful. I guess since something better was at the time unattainable I just dealt with what I had. I didn't rant about id Software though, that I recall... despite their system requirements being laughably wrong in my case...It's not that I lack creativity it's the fact that once you build a castle with a moat of lava and have already found diamonds there is not a lot left to do. Other then maybe build another or a roller coaster or something. Notch has posted that he plans to fix the memory hogging and graphical issues "sooner than later" but by that he seems to mean after the whole freaking game is done. I only dis java script because it allows for such sloppy game design and many game devs have posed the same question of why he didn't use a better avenue. I realize he used java because he was familiar with the program but the coding is sub par. Also I do think hunger and the ability to sprint are good ideas but there is no reason to add experience when you can't use it on anything. The strongholds and mineshafts clash with the ravine generation far too often even though the ravines are also cool. I know there are more employees but for the amount of sales he should have hired a few more myself and the moderator on Get satisfaction go crazy trying to help all the people with critical errors or issues with buying the game. Mojang should seriously have better tech support and customer service of any kind. I only bring up Notch because he is the one saying this and that will get fixed then he releases another "update" and fixes few to none of the problems just introduces a handfull more. The guys who created the aether mod did a very good job of coding and it doesn't slow the game down a bit. But my crap computer still doesn't get a good enough framerate to fight any of the bosses well. I am not getting a new computer for minecraft it has just illuminated the fact that I should have saved my money from the get go to play the games I really wanted to play. Though you're going a little overboard I do agree with one thing quake and my computer both suck but buying a PCI card for it is too expensive for a piece of junk. I had a p133 back in the day too.

Solve : Bios Reflush software?

Answer»

Hi guys,

I have prblem with my HP compaq DX2300 and i want to reflush the bios but i cant find any software support the motherbord which is MS-7336. does anyone have it

Thanks What exactly to you mean by reflush the bios???re-flushing the bios is re-install the bios chip's firmware, i found many software can do this but not support my motherbord, i can't find the file or software neither on the MSI websiteYou mean FLASH not FLUSH. Why on earth would you want to flash the bios with the same version? I've never heard of that.because there is a problem with the bios, " check sum bios error" and i feel i am stuck here so i want to reflash the bios.
btw sorry for the FLUSH Is it a bios checksum error or a cmos checksum error? If the latter, unplug the SYSTEM from AC power, OPEN the case, remove the round silver battery for 20 or 30 seconds, replace the battery and the computer cover, plug it back in and restart.i've tried to remove the battry, i found the bios flash software but it didn't work. it seems the motherboard has alot of problems, i'll send it back to HP tomorrow to FIX it or buy a newone.

thanks for help In future keep in mind that flushing the BIOS is the easiest way to create an expensive doorstopper...You can flush your toilet, you can flush your nose, you can flush your friends - but you can't flush your bios.I did that ONE for you.... You just keep teeing them up, I'll kick 'em through

Solve : PC shuts down by itself while installing Windows?

Answer»

I've had problems with a virus, so I decided to format the HDD and reinstall XP Pro, but when I reach the "37 minutes remaining" part of the install my PC shuts off, sometimes before. I've tried letting it cool off and even opened up the case and stuck a fan on it, but it keeps doing it. Any ideas what it MAY be?Genuine XP CD ?
Any hardware issues prior to this ? ?

Most common problems causing this are overheating, BAD RAM or hard drive issues...
Try cleaning the CD in an outward motion from the center with a SOFT lint free cloth first though...
Then DLoad the drive diagnostics (FREE) from the HDD manuf. site and run the long test.
For the RAM DLoad and run MemTest...let it run at least 2 hours...any errors at all and you have a bad stick of RAM.It's a genuine CD and it's happened a few times before. Sometimes it'll work fine for hours, other times it'll shut down after an hour, but for some reason it consistently shuts down during the particular part of the INSTALLATION. Man, the RAM better not be bad, I only got it a few months ago!Should still be under warranty then...The recession got themGot who ? ?
There is a manuf. warranty on most RAM.

Solve : Touchy touchpad - left click button is dead.?

Answer»

Alright, so I have a relatively new Asus F3L series notebook, about eight months old now, running Windows XP (although my OS isn't really pertinent to the issue). Over the past few months, the left click button on its touchpad has been slowly dying, some days not working at all. It's definitely a hardware issue as FLIPPING the LAPTOP over and banging on its bottom a few times usually gets it to work again, but doing this obviously worries me (I don't want to break ANYTHING else, but nothing else works). The Asus tech support guys won't help me at all, giving me the sole option of "Return the laptop and LOSE all computer access for the next few months," which isn't going to happen. What could be causing this problem? Would removing and re-inserting the touchpad help at all, and if so, how would I go about it without breaking something?

I thought that I'd dealt with every hardware issue under the sun, but this is a new one to me.

Thankyou in advance.

Solve : while typing, cursor keeps moving to unwanted places?

Answer»

This seems to be a problem with every laptop I've owned as well as friends' laptops. If I am in the middle of typing a paragraph, my cursor will all of a sudden jump to another part of the paragraph. If I'm not watching, I'll end up typing words in the wrong place in the paragraph. I'm always aware of where my hands are on the keyboard making sure not to touch any arrow buttons or my mouse pad. Any suggestions as to why this happens?
This is common on LAP tops. If any part of you hand touches the touch pad. Try turning it off while typing and see if it helps.

If you have the correct driver installed for the touchpad, there should be options to adjust its sensitivity, prevent unwanted tap-clicks, etc.How do you turn off the touchpad or adjust its sensitivity? I've searched the "help and support" but it does not have anything on "touchpad." Have searched HARDWARE and several other places. Thanks to those who gave suggestions. Just need next step. What's the MODEL of laptop?HP Compaq 680sExcellent.lolQuote from: lreedy316 on April 14, 2009, 01:43:11 PM

HP Compaq 680s

Are you sure that's the right number? Searching through HP's website as well as Google, I was unable to find a laptop with that model number.I found it on the hp.com website and downloaded the driver for the touchpad. I was able to adjust the palm touch and the sensitivity. Hopefully that will do the trick. Thanks for all the help!Oh ok, good.

I don't know if this applies to your model or not, but on most HP/Compaq models, there's also a small button just above the touchpad. This is used to activate or deactivate the touchpad. Handy if you're going to be typing more than a sentence or two. Just give it a PRESS then type away. Press it again when you're done or need to use the mouse. The touchpad usually shuts off and turns back on instantly when you push it, there's not LONG wait or anything.Don't worry its not a big problem. I have also the similar problem. Its common in all laptops.

Solve : Battery not Charging?

Answer»

I have posted to the Dell Forum but haven't gotten a response. HOPEFULLY someone can help me.

Facts:
1. I have a Dell Latitude D810 (purchased 2/2007 no longer under warranty)
2. Needed a new Battery - purchased 12/08
3. Battery slowly quite keeping its charge. It stayed charged some days for an hour and others for only 20 minutes or less.
4. Ordered a replacement battery while still under the ONE year warranty.
5. Received new battery and it only kept a charge for about 5 seconds.
6. I thought I got a bad battery so asked for a replacement.
7. New Battery states it is "not present".
8. Running Windows XP

It has been suggested that Dell update or replace my BIOS. Dell sent me a link to do this but it won't work unless I have a battery installed. Since my battery is "not present". This is not an option.

Now it SEEMS as if I need to repair the motherboard. I was wondering if there is anything that I can do to correct this problem. Or to fix the motherboard myself. I am computer illiterate, but am pretty good at figuring out things if given step by step directions.

Someone replied on another forum that I may want to check my CMOS battery. I don't think this is the problem because everything else works just fine as long as I am using my A/C Adapter. (I purchased a new one about 6 months ago)

Any help will be greatly appreciated
You would need a diagram of the Motherboard. Or else fabricate your own battery charger. Do you still have the old AC adapter? Did it really go bad?
If the laptop is FAILING, it can draw more current and can not charge the battery. And if the battery is charged, it will not give long service.

Building a home made battery charger for the kind of batteries use in laptops presents some risk. The charging current is on the order of about 500 MA for about 4 hours, but this can vary a lot, depending on the battery type.
The laptop itself has circuitry that regulates the charge rate. This may not be on the motherboard. It may have burnt out. Without a diagram of the motherboard and the other things inside the case, it is just a wild guess as to how to charge the battery. The only thing I would try is to charge the battery outside the case in a home made circuit that limits the current to 500MA and max of 12 volts. And do it in a safe place. it could explode.

Come to think of it, I would not do that. I have an old lap top that works good on AC. I tried to find an battery for it, tore it open, and was dismayed by the complexity of the thing. I just use it a a small AC powered computer.

If you really like that laptop, just WAIT. Someday somebody will have a good one for sale and you can buy it. Then you will have two. One to travel, one to keep at home.

Solve : USB Hard Drive?

Answer»

So, After I got a virus on my laptop, I managed to back up all my files onto an external hard drive. Now, I can't find my windows CD, so that sucks. However, I did format it, so all the data is gone. But the problem I'm having is, the Western Digital USB drive I backed up all my data on isn't being recognized by any computers anymore. It was fine just an hour ago, now it isn't working. I hope I didn't just lose all of my data that I spent hours trying to back up.

EDIT: On my vista laptop, it just said "Device drivers for Unknown installed successfully."

How do you install drivers for SOMETHING that's unknown? Too bad, it still doesn't work.

EDIT #2: I just used UBCD to boot the laptop, and I ran a HD Tune scan. Looks like the virus fried my laptop's hard drive. Half of the drive is damaged sectors. I guess I can count using a data recovery program out of the question to get the data back. I believe that the Western Digital USB drive is my only option to get my data back now, the laptop's drive is completely ruined...Why don't you run Chkdsk and see if it will repair file system errors and bad sectors. Chkdsk cannot actually repair a bad sector, but it might be able to recover the data stored in one.A virus will not fry a laptop hard drive...or any other hard drive...Quote from: patio on April 11, 2009, 08:12:18 AM

A virus will not fry a laptop hard drive...or any other hard drive...

Yeah, that's what I thought. It doesn't make sense to me either. All of my computers except the Vista one just failed a hard drive self-test though. Sooo... Yeah, me in all of my stupidity apparently got every computer infected. Think it's a BIOS virus that's screwing with my hard drive or something? I mean really, what virus would survive a DBAN wipe? Because, what it seems to be doing is writing random garbage in the MFT over and over until the sectors turn up as "bad." Then, the computer that I don't turn off not only had bad sectors at the BEGINNING, but throughout the drive in random spots.

EDIT: Let me rephrase that; After wiping the drive with DBAN, I partitioned the drive so that I could install on an area that was not red in the HD Test scan. I installed a fresh windows copy from the original CD. Almost immediately, it resumed grinding the drive again. This virus is making a fool out of me. I don't know what it is, where it is, or how to get rid of it. None of my anti-virus programs are finding it, and it automatically deletes HijackThis and other software (The files are "corrupt.") It boots itself in safe mode SOMEHOW (I thought that couldn't happen) and reinstalls from a clean copy of windows. I'm like, ya know, about to scream here. I've never SEEN anything do this before.

Oh, and by the way, this was originally in Hardware because I thought I removed the virus by formatting the drive. Clearly, I was incorrect...A few things to consider:
A virus cannot destroy hardware...
There are no BIOS virii that i know of...

That being said VISIT our Virus and Spyware section and follow the guide at the top of the page for posting your logs...Alright, I'll bring this back over to Spyware/antivirus again. *CENSORED*, i thought I had it. At this stage, it sounds to me like your best option is buy a new hard drive.

Solve : Stretched Display?

Answer»

Ever since putting in a new graphics card (Nvidia GTS 450) my resolution has been stretched. Previously, my 17" monitor displayed a 144 X 900 resolution perfectly. Now, a 1440 X 900 resolution makes a perfect circle taller. This is the native resolution for my monitor. Every possible, displayable resolution either YIELDS a tall circle, or a wide circle. The best I can get is with 1280 X 1024 (slightly wide circle). I've updated all drivers. I have played around in the NVidia control panel, changing the scaling mode without any change, as well as looking through all the options in the windows control panel. I have also changed my monitor's cable from VGA to DVI. Interestingly, with a VGA cable, my computer thinks 1280 X 1024 is the native resolution of my monitor. Still, either configuration gives the same result, a skewed picture.

Again, before the new graphics card, everything was fine on 1440 X 900. Now, no possible resolution gives a picture that is not skewed.

Any and all help is appreciated, thanks.Have you considered the the monitor itself?

Replacing a graphics card can cause complications RESULTING in instability if running with old drivers, EVEN if you updated them. Furthermore, you cannot overwrite and/or ASSUMED that those drivers will be stable with the new GPU. You say you updated all the drivers, but its recommended that you uninstall the drivers of the past GPU and install the new drivers from the manufacturers site, not Nvidia's site.

Try using Driver Sweeper to remove the old drivers and then install the new drivers for the new card. Thanks very much for responding. I DOWNLOADED driversweeper and reinstalled the drivers, but I am still having the same issues.Quote from: hedgehog88 on September 08, 2011, 01:13:11 AM

Have you considered the the monitor itself?

Check the monitor's on-screen menu and see if there's a setting for setting factory defaults.

Solve : Video Streaking/Ghosting edge Problem?

Answer»

Well, I'm sure how to explain this... but as you can see in the attached photo I have a problem with this- watermark ghosting edge streak(y)ness. It randomly occurred and when i play videos I'm sure didn't not have this before- they now appear like this with MOVEMENT. I've TRIED windows media player and VLC, they both do it, though, VLC less then the other. What even more odd. Is when I pause the video you can (as seen on the photo) see the streaks clearly. Though, if i minimize the application then bring it up again- it's smooths out a little- yet still apparent. Any flippin clue ANYONE? I cant seem to find this problem with anyone else.. Go figure. Ha. Thanks in advance.
I also updated my video driver for my Nvida Gforce 9800 GT video card... nothing.
I have windows 7 64-bit. 4Gb of RAM and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core processor 5400+ 2.79GHz

[regaining space - attachment deleted by admin]For anybody that has this problem, which I've SEARCHED all over the net. You need to completely uninstall your video card driver, remove it. Let it reinstall it's driver (usually automatically) and wal-la! .. I made the mistake of "just" updating it. Hope this helps!

Also called phosphor pitch, a measurement that indicates the diagonal distance between like-colored phosphor dots on a display screen. Measured in millimeters, the dot pitch is ONE of the principal characteristics that determines the quality of display monitors. The lower the NUMBER, the crisper the image. The dot pitch of color monitors for personal computers ranges from about 0.15 mm to 0.30 mm.

I think that's what was being described.

regarding Numeracy (or more precisely, the lack thereof) my co-worker (the one we're trying our best to get rid of) Is a complete B-word to our customers and can barely handle simple math. On several occasions asking the customer how much she owes them.

meanwhile, it cost $1.68, and they gave her a toonie ($2).

And god forbid they wait until AFTER she rings in the amount given to let the machine do the math before introducing *GASP* another 68 cents! Dear me!

Oh well, as My supervisor says about her, "you can't teach stupid"- She's a smart one, she is.

various interesting stupidities she's performed.

Taking out the compost, she told us, "she was taking it out to her car".... *CENSORED*?

She can't use the stepladder to grab any items, she has to get me to grab them. a Complete waste of my time. As if I don't have any of my own work to do. Apparently she's "afraid of heights". Which means she must not sleep on her stomach for fear.

Saying "this is ridiculous" when there is one customer. Who wants one coffee. Yeah, alright then. Not like that's the reason we're freaking here in the first place.

or my personal favourite would be going out to clean tables, and purposely bringing a newspaper to read. As if we can't see her standing there for almost an hour reading the bloody paper. My suspicion is she looks at the pictures.

My only consolation is I make more money then her. But really I don't understand why let her keep her job after simply vanishing from the store not once, but twice in her first three months. Oh well.

Sorry, guess I somewhat strayed from "numerically challenged" to just plain "stupid".Numerically challenged eventually morphs into just plain stupid....
If you don't use it ...you lose it.that's true.

She's illiterate as well. heh, High school dropout. Or maybe she didn't even get past high school? I don't know. whenever some of us talk about school(s) she always changes the subject.

I would guess, maybe, that some of these are true: she is "built", and either the boss or the clientele are male, and except for moose the nearest female is in Fairbanks?

GOD no...

she's old... and ... "of generous girth"

they keep saying that they can't get rid of her because she's been there so long. well who's fault is that? they were told before the three months "probation" was up that she was a freakin retard when it came to anything requiring a cerebrum.

Although I'll admit that the brain mass of the entire afternoon shift staff might add up to the size of an ants claw, so it seems to be the de facto standard to hire retards.

I guess they work for cheap? Unlike the smarter ones there like myself who realize that they don't lack a working frontal lobe.BC,

Solve : 64K / 60Hz - Frequency out of range - when systems boots??

Answer»

I am pretty much a NOVICE on the computer. Yesterday I received a PC game and tried to load the game and although it autostarted it would not load. After about 60 seconds the screen went blank, EXCEPT for a single line accross the upper edge of the screen. There was no sound or anything else. I thought it might be loading and left for several minutes and came back to find it had not changed. I opened the disc DRIVE and removed the disc and found it very hot (the disc). I had to reset the machine and went I did so, it went through the normal set up screens including the Windows screen but before the icons screen would normally appear the screen went dark except for a message in the center stating the following:

First row: 64K / 60 hz
Second Row Frequency Out Of Range

Nothing else will COME up. Can anyone help with this and tell me what to do. I have tried the same disc on other computers. It would not work on any but did not effect the others in this way. The computer is older as is the monitor being used (about five years on both)

Thanks

RwalterCan you get into safe mode?No I cannot seem to get into the safe mode? The only thing I can do is ACCESS the bios by hitting F1 as the windows programs loads. There does not seem to be anything in the bios that will help.

Solve : Computer Idiot in need of help.?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

So i bought a computer, mainly for writing and playing games. I´ve mostly just played with an Xbox 360 so i have no clue, hench my screen name Clueless, what is good on my new PC and what isn´t, and most of all how to update the CURRENT software which is pre-installed on my system.

So i kinda need an ´ Idiots Guide ´ type walkthrough in pretty much *everything*. / deep sigh.

Anyway, here is my current spec :

AMD Acer Phenom Triple Core. 6 Gb of DDR2 Ram. 1Tb HD Drive. Windows Vista 64 Bit Home Premium.
ATI Radeon HD4650 1Gb Graphics Card. ( The box says Up To 2431 Mb. What ever that means. ) I don´t think it´s an intergrated card since the 1Gb is supposedly the cards own memory, and does not take it from the main system memory.
It also came with a BlueRay /DVD R/W Combo thing.

So, my first question is, how do i update my current Graphics Card drivers?
I know i need to download the proper 64bit drivers from ATI, but i don´t know how to install them because i probably need to remove the old drivers first which came with the computer. How do i that?
This is where the ´ Idiots Guide ´ will come in handy. *lol*. I´m not joking since i have noooo clue how to even start the process, other than downloading the *.exe file from ATI onto my desktop.
And after i´ve removed the old drivers, restart and double click on the *.exe file and let it do it´s magick on it´s own?

/deep sigh.

Question number two. After i´ve updated my graphics card, i prolly need to use the automated Windows updater, or should i do that before i install any new graphics drivers? And what can i do to increase my computers performance since i´ve heard that Vista is a resource hog?

And finally, did i just waste my money 700 Euros, on a bad computer, or do i have a chanse to play games like Empire:Total War at somewhat goodish graphics? I really don´t mind CUTTING down extras such as shadows, and some filters or whatever those are called which remove jagged edges as long as the framerate is good or the game is playable at 1200 x 720 with an 22 inch widescreen monitor.

Thank you before hand, and please don´t get upset since i´m beign honest about this. I´m a total computer beginner.

With regards.
Hey Clueless,

It LOOKS like a pretty solid computer to me to be able to play games. I do not think you wasted your money.

Second, if you are upgrading your graphics drives from ATI drivers to new ATI drivers, you shouldn't have to uninstall the previous drivers I don't think. You should just be able to download and install. I would like someone else to comment on this though.

Last, you should be able to run the windows update at any point with no problem. Just go here, windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and follow Microsoft's directions. I would update Windows first.......*sigh* You SAID graphics card which means that it isnt intergrated on to the board at all. If it is in the top part of the TOWER it has on board if it connects to the lower part its a card. Visit ATI and put in what you have graphic card wise and the operating sytem which will take you to a download page and run it from there. No unless it isnt to that card, not sure were you got that your doing an update not a reinstall then there would be no software for it to update. Think of it more as a patch. I would creat a restore point before updateing not sure how in vista. probably if you updated before installing the new video drivers. Remove anything that your not useing in the taskbar. Cant really answer the last one but probably its only 700 so its probably not all that great of a machine.
Nice post here. Thanks for sharing.Okay? your Welcome

Solve : Facing a "Weird" Problem with DSL 502-T Router!?

Hi Guys!!

DSL 502-T is what I use to connect to Internet(My ISP Charges monthly rental for the same). I have STARTED facing one of the most odd of the issues since few days:

Suddenly, all 3 LIGHTS viz. Status, ADSL & Ethernet(except Power) goes OFF & I have to re-start the Router all over again!

This trend religiously goes by once in a day(for the very first session of the day) & things work FINE after that!

Now, is this some issue with my Hardware or some Glitch goes by at the ISP end? CONTACT your ISP...they will replace it Free of charge.
