Solve : External drive format problem?

Answer»

Suddenly my external drive is telling me that it needs formatted and that formatting will erase all the data. Obviously I have that data saved on the external drive because I want to keep it. Is there a way to retrieve the data - get into the drive with out reformatting it?

I have a toshiba with a pentium (r) dual core cpu T4200 with a windows vista home PREMIUM operating system and the drive is a acomdata tm model PDHD1000USE-72 s/n D1318070 from radio shack.

I can be emailed at [emailprotected]
Hi

I have researched that drive and can't find what the make and model of the drive is . But that aside it would be better to work on the problem with the hard drive directly connected to a SATA port on the computer. This would allow you to run data recovery software on the drive and recover the data as well as run diagnostics to check that the drive is ok.

For data recovery i would recommend. http://www.easeus.com/

And to check the drive the manufactures diagnostics or HDD tune http://www.hdtune.com/Your portable drive has 2 ports according to its specs., for USB 2.0 and eSATA. Have you tried both connections and on a different PC? Was there any chance that it could be dropped or unplugged while reading/transferring files?Awhile back drives like that model had some serious problems. But it is hard to SAY if you can get the data off. The failures on those devices is most ofte destroy the data.

There are hundreds of bad reports specific to that particular drive model. Granted, some may be due to operator error. But many of the reports simply state the drive failed for not apparent reason.I had one die on me a few months ago. Lost all my backed up stuff. Sad to hear that. This problem with external 1TB drives stated about for or five years ago. By now you would think it should be all over with at last. But apparently there is some overstock that is still out there. Or maybe they did not really fix the problem.

So if anybody is thinking about investing in a 1TB drive that is not from a new production, be very careful. If you buy one and see that a model is an older version, the vendor might replace it with a new version if you ask. The vendor may not even be aware that nit is old stock.
With hard drives, it ALWAYS a matter of WHEN will the drive fail, not if. The size of the hard drive has no bearing on this eventuality.Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 12, 2011, 01:33:56 PM

Not True.
Are you day dreaming again BC?
My reference is to the drives taht were first introduced about four years ago, not to all current production.
The 1TB and 2TB platter was/is a new technology. The infoant morality of the new 1TB drives was very high. It is now stable. But, as I said in the post, there is the issue of old stock on the shelf. This industry has a bad habit of putting junk back into the mainstream. It has been documented and hyou nknow it.

The poster blames the hard drives, not the mobos...

disk, will experience a higher initial rate of failure. (infant mortality) then settle down for a few years into .... system built with 1TB drives requires just 11 disks. ...
my 1TB drive is about 3 and a half years old.

Why hasn't it failed? luck? Of course luck, because all drives fail and regardless of brand some will fail within a short period of time. But if it did fail- how would I know if the cause was a manufacturing defect or if it just happened to be one of the drives that don't last long?

And if so, why have none of the other 1TB+ drives I've purchased failed either? They are equally as old, and I didn't double-check any model numbers. I tend to avoid getting involved in wild goose chases when said wild goose is both invisible and covered with butter. I just get used to the smell.

More to the point though, since both of those could easily be availability error,- the Original Poster says nothing about the size of their drive. That particular model comes in 500GB, 750GB, 1TB, and 1.5TB versions. They say nothing about the size of their drive. You assume both that it is 1TB or larger, that it is a given age, and that it is a certain model (WDC) based on your decision that this is the cause, despite the lack of any information aside from "the drive failed" that bears any similarity to any of the confabulated evidence that both ignores statistical anomalies and then says certain drives fail more often than others based entirely on values well within a margin of error that would point to it.

Code: [Select]the lack of any information aside from "the drive failed" that bears any similarity to any of the confabulated evidence that both ignores statistical anomalies and then says certain drives fail more often than others based entirely on values well within a margin of error that would point to it.
False statement. The statistical study shows that about four years ago there was a LOT of **** 1TB drives being pushed into the consumer market taht filued within a few weeks. The abnormality was the mentaligy of the vendors that tried to fool the consumers with junk.

(Remember, I have already qualified this as to a problem thata is already old and does not represetn current production.)How do you know the drive is 1TB and how do you know it is a brand affected by this?

They didn't state the size. And even if they did, that particularly external drive uses Samsung for the Internal drive anyway.

Also, that PDF you CITED? That particular quote comes out of a passage regarding RAID storage and SATA drives and makes the point that for a RAID of 10TB in size you would need 43 or 44 250GB disks, but 11 1-TB disks, and goes on to say that the failure rate was about a quarter of the failure rate of the smaller drives- which is to be expected since the latter had four times as many disks. Absolutely nothing else is stated and the entire white-paper seems to focus on the use of enterprise-grade drives in a RAID setting, not on consumer drives in a desktop computing environment. And it says directly that the larger 1TB drives are more reliable even on a per-drive basis then their smaller brethren. This study says NOTHING about the consumer market, aside from saying that the paper is not about them.

Solve : Graphical error/artifact in Windows?

Answer»

Just 2 minutes before now, I was only watching a video file in Windows (XP), and the ENTIRE screen suddenly changed to a strange field of multi-coloured pixels. The sound from the video still played, however the display looked corrupted.

I held the power button to shut the computer down, then rebooted, going into the BIOS.

The display seemed fine after checking the BIOS, booting into Windows.

I thought that the problem may be from my graphics card. (near 4 years old) [Nvidia Geforce 7800 GTX 512]

The card runs at 32-35 degrees Celcius at idle, and around 55-65 degrees at load.

I had been running a stable slight overclock with Core frequency @ 560Mhz and Memory frequency (slight underclock than stock) @ 1680 mhz.

Would this mean I have to replace the card soon? (I am already in planning to buy its replacement - HD 4850 512).

Any help given is appreciated.Cards don't always warn when they're getting ready to head South...
Some will show symptoms that GET progressively worse while others will just give up the ghost all at once...
I'd say keep using it while saving up for a new one...
Make sure to check the power REQUIREMENTS on the new one and that your PSU will handle it.

Good Luck.

Solve : Warning opening/startup message has me worried -- and helpless?

Answer»

When I start my desktop, I'm getting this message (and a dull chord sound about every two minutes or so):
Dr 1 Serial ATA

Hard Drive Self Monitoring system has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range. Dell recommends that you back up regularly. Parameter may be out of range or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem.

Press F1 key to continue; F2 key to run the setup utility.

It may be connected with a my recent attempt to install HDD Life. I installed it but what comes up when I try to use it is the message that it cannot do a complete diagnosis because it's the freeware version, which I had previously installed. I tried to unistall the freeware, using the software provider's recommendations, i.e., removing the PROGRAM in control panel, then reinstalling it, but that doesn't do the job.

The COMPUTER is a Dell Workstation 380 with a 160 GB hardrive that is only six months old, with a 300 GB"slave", also new. I'm using Windows XP, the newest rendition, that I got from Dell when I bought the computer in February. Please help.

Uninstall the program completely. Then do as suggested and backup all critical data to off disk media. Then boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /rHi Allen,
I've tried without success to remove the HDDLife program. When I do try it ends with this message:"There is a problem with this WindowsInstaller package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

When you advise me to back up all data, do you mean all files? Is there a Windows program for this or do I just copy and paste?

Finally, WOULD it help matters to disconnect the one hard drive on which all my programs are now and install XP on the other hard drive?

When I do boot, now, without the abovementioned move, and hit R, what am I trying to do, or will everything run as it needs to and repair as it should?
I appreciate your help, and patience. Thanks again,

Mike

Hi Allen,
I've tried without success to remove the HDDLife program. When I do try it ends with this message:"There is a problem with this WindowsInstaller package. A script required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."

Have you tried reinstalling the program and then uninstalling it?

When you advise me to back up all data, do you mean all files? Is there a Windows program for this or do I just copy and paste?

Yes, I mean any files you need to save (photos, documents, etc) just in case the drive actually is failing - though I tend to think it's just a scare tactic from the free version of that program intended to get you to purchase the paid version). Your best bet is to copy them manually unless there are a LOT)

Finally, would it help matters to disconnect the one hard drive on which all my programs are now and install XP on the other hard drive?

Toward what end? If it would be to use the newer drive permanently and just copy the files from the existing drive to that one and then format the current drive then sure, you can do that

When I do boot, now, without the abovementioned move, and hit R, what am I trying to do, or will everything run as it needs to and repair as it should?
I appreciate your help, and patience.

When you press R you'll be asked to which Windows installation you want - press the number 1. You'll be asked for a password - press ENTER. Then you'll be taken to what looks like a dos prompt. At that point enter chkdsk /r and press ENTER
Thanks again,

Mike

I
Allen.

First off, let me thank you for taking the time to help. I appreciate that very much. I just read your annotations on my previous message, and after opening up the desktop, and saw this greeting:
NOTICE- Drive 0: Serial ATA, SATA-0
Hard Drive SELF MONITORING SYSTEM has reported that a parameter has exceeded its normal operating range.
Dell recommends that you back up your data regularly.

A parameter out of range may or may not indicate a potential hard drive problem.

Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility

I'm going to try installing the program once more and then uninstalling it to see if it is CONTRIBUTING or at worst causing the problem. I'll be back shortly. Again , thanks
Mike

Allan,
Sorry for the misspelling of your name.

The LATEST twist in my problem -- when I rebooted the desktop, this message confronted me:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hall.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Now what?

Solve : Laptop - Battery wouldn't charge, now won't work when plugged in?

Answer»

Alright, So I have a Dell Inspiron 1520. Its been very well taken care of, it doesn't get moved a lot, its not very old, etc.

About a week ago I noticed the battery would no longer charge. I thought, no big deal, batteries die, it happens. I was meaning to replace it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

For the time being I had to KEEP the laptop plugged into AC power. The battery went down to 0% charge, meaning if I accidentally unplugged the laptop it instantly shut off. But as long as I had it plugged in, no problems.

Today I turned it off at 2:00pm. I attempted to turn it BACK on at 3:00pm, and got this short little whirring noise, lights blinked on for a fraction of a second... then gone. Now when I hit the power button NOTHING happens. Its completely nonresponsive.

I double checked that it wasn't a bad wall OUTLET or something, but the outlet is fine.

I really need a quick solution to get this thing back online. Ive got college work on there that I desperately need. A partially written 20-page paper, notes from class, everything. Also - something I just noticed. This past week, even when my laptop was shut off, when the AC power was plugged into it the "LOW battery" warning would blink. Now there is no blinking what-so-ever. Its as if its not plugged in.External Power supply?
Try another power supply.
If the battery does not change to 60%, stop leaving it in the machine.I don't quite understand what you're saying. Nothing is external. Its a laptop and I have an AC adapter cord that I plug into the wall.

I dont understand what you mean by 'try another power supply'.Sorry, your power supply is shot. You should be able to remove the battery, plu it in and turn it on. In not, the internal power supply is out. It just might be the power cord, but that is about one in a hundred.
Many Laptop PCs have an external power supply. But yours does not.Check your laptops power supply wire.Just to cover every base, some simple THINGS to try.

Remove your battery and examine it. If the thing has several "blade contacts" where it connects electrically to the laptop, try removing/installing the battery several times... about a dozen or so. What this does is wipe the corrosion off the contacts.

Your laptop SHOULD power up without the battery, using only external power! Find someone with a DVM (an electronics guy in the college lab) and measure the DC output of your power adapter without the laptop plugged in. It should conform to the voltage specification on the power adapter body.

With a toothpick (something non-metalic) probe around GENTLY in the DC-IN receptacle on the laptop. Is the DC-IN pin loose or wobbly? Missing?

If you have all the system drivers from Dell, try removing and reinstalling the Power Management Driver.

Finally, any good college student with a laptop also owns a 2.5" external USB disk enclosure. If all else fails, pop your drive out and use the enclosure to attach the disk to another PC's USB inlet. Your classwork is now available. (I've learned all this from owning laptops. They're nice, but... like a Boy Scout, always "be prepared".)

Solve : printer driver problems?

Answer»

My HP Deskjet 4480 won't scan so I thought I'd update the driver. Never done any of that before. After 5 different websites each with way too much information on the pages and 4 tries I gave up. After waiting 4 minutes for the downloads I got error messages like "can't fine the specified path" or I came to a dead END when it asked if I wanted to delete the download (I don't know why I would want to delete it!) or install a new device. I already had the device/printer installed. But...does Win. updates automatically update all the drivers? I ALWAYS do the updates. Quote from: gord99 on September 12, 2011, 08:56:31 AM

But...does Win. updates automatically update all the drivers?
I believe the answer is no, except for Microsoft devices. For example, Windows Updates (Windows 7) recently updated the mouse software for my Microsoft mouse. But, even if Windows Updates does occasionally provide an update for a non-Microsoft device, you can control that by configuring your Windows Updates so that you review them before accepting them for installation.

What are these websites you visited to get info and downloads? Are they non-HP SITES? If so, why did you not go straight to HP's website? This appears to be your best source: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3742086

How are you trying to scan, by using an LCD control PANEL on the HP Deskjet 4480 or by using HP software installed on your computer?

Solve : From low profile to regular.?

Answer»

I recently bought a Low Profile GeForce 9800gt 512MB GDDR3 and I realized that in order to use it, I need a much better power supply. The one that I have in there is a 250watt and the video card requires at LEAST 400watts. Normaly this wouldn't be a problem, but my computer is a Low Profile (slim). It's a DELL Inspiron 531s. Now I can't find a power supply to fit in there. I've looked everywhere. So my only hope now is to change my entire computer case from a low profile to regular. I've already verified that my motherboard would fit in another case because it's a micro ATX. I'm just wondering if this sort of thing has been done before and if there is something that I'm not thinking about that could stop me from pulling this off? Also if there are any guides to doing this sort of thing a link would be MUCH MUCH appreciated. Thank you.

Solve : Middle click opens My documents?

Answer»

Hi,

I recently acquired a new 8 button mouse (ione lynx p3) from someone who had no use for it. It says on the box "no drivers required for windows XP" so i plugged it in and it went through the whole found new hardware etc. and then it told me it was ready to use. But it didn't work not even the movement. So i deferred back to my old 3 button mouse which worked fine, or so I thought.

Now when I click the middle mouse button (using my 3 button mouse) My Documents pops up in explorer. I've tried updating the drivers and reinstalling them but no change. It's not so much the middle mouse button but the middle click function because in Logitech Setpoint, when I change the function of the middle button to something else (i.e. minimize, do nothing, start menu, etc.) it works fine for it's assigned function but not for the middle click function. This is quite frustrating as I use Autocad and REVIT where the middle button is essential for panning and rotating. I run XP sp3.

If so, try going into the BIOS and see if there's a setting for VGA/HDMI output. This is usually detected automatically, but just check to be sure.i get picture using the vga port, but none of the graphic settings in bios help me get picture on the lcd monitor.Does the HDMI port work in Windows? Sometimes using a USB adapter does not do what you need to do.

Here are a set of jpg images that show how to hook a laptop IDE DRIVE up to a SMALL Form Factor desktop.
The only IDE PORT on the mother board is fro the CD-ROM, so we "borrow" that port with a 40 oin cable we sneak out the back of the case. Th small laptop drive needs an adapter and a small poser supply for five and twelve bolts. Once connected, we poser up everything and Windows shows this to be another drive. We now can read stuff off the drive. NOTE. we do not try to run programs off the secondy drive, if may be infected with a virus. Nor do we open image files. Here's a suggestion which might make this easier. Take the laptop into a dark room and turn it on. See if the screen lights up slightly or not.

Either:
A) The screen will glow slightly in the dark indicating the backlight has come, even if nothing is displayed on the screen. This would indicate something like the mainboard has gone bad.

B) The screen will not glow at all. This probably means the screen is not connected correctly (the cable has come loose or broken from the mainboard), the backlight is out (in which CASE the computer would still boot and you would hear the sound of Windows starting), or again the mainboard is malfunctioning and not TELLING it to turn on like it should.

In any case, if you BOUGHT it new, it will have at least a year warranty. None of these THINGS is user serviceable (and attempting to fix it will void the warranty). Contact HP for instructions on how to place a warranty claim.

Solve : Changing partition Hard drives sizes?

Answer»

For some reason my hardrive is partitioned into 5 separate drives (person who made computer for me did it).The DRIVE I store my music (G Drive) in is nearing full and I have another drive (F drive) that I have next to nothing in. Is there a way I can take the space (40gb) from F drive and use it in G drive?Years ago when drives were much smaller there was a program/app that could do that and other useful things. I'm sorry I can't recall the name of it. It was free to try and cheap to buy, but how OFTEN would you use SOMETHING like that? Usually there is something around to perform what we want so I think if you search you'll find something. Good luck.Welcome to CH.
I see you are using XP.
You can move you stuff from one drive to another.
You can tie two drives together as a "folder". (More on that below)
You can use a free program to change the size of one of more partitions.
Warning. Be very careful about the partition that has your system on it.
Here is a good program you can try free:
http://www.partition-tool.com/
Read fine print carefully. Don't let them suck you into buying it. You can use it free.
Making a drive a folder:
The "My documents" folder can be moved to an empty folder on any drive.
Video:

Something like this can be done with other folders.^^^ Geek, thanks. I followed your LINK and the app I was trying to think of is Partition Magic which SYMANTEC has now. I'm going to try a couple apps from your link. Thanks for that..it worked a treat

Solve : Mac book harddrive?

Answer»

Haha hey guys whats up!

Anyway my problem is this: I would LIKE to take the hard drive out of a computer (Macbook pro 15in) and PLACE it INSIDE a standard computer now I realize it is sata however i dont know if it will fit the standard sata thats found in most desktop comps. Oh and mind you the Macbook pro no longer works however the harddrive STILL works. I cant even plug in a DVI cable and use my monitor. You have to need USB cable for your hard disk. The SATA connections are the same...however you will need to use some type of file conversion software to view/ use that data on a Windows machine...

Solve : CD Drive Problem?

Answer»

I've had my laptop for about 2 years and I just got a new HARD drive (not by choice, it was TOTALLY screwed.) Everything's been working great apart from my CD drive. I put a CD in and nothing happens. I tried going into My Computer but the CD drive wasn't there. This is really frustrating as I need to put my CDs on iTunes ASAP. Does anyone have any clue how I can FIX this? I'm reluctant to go get it fixed as it's just been fixed already and my PARENTS will not be happy with me!
Thanks!

(I have an E-systems 3113 laptop. It has Windows XP)Insert a BOOTABLE cd in the drive and reboot (make sure the CD drive is at the top of the boot order in your bios). Does the system see the cd at boot?If it's just been fixed take it back because it isn't fixed good enough.

Solve : Custom Resolution?

Answer»

I am trying to connect my laptop to my 60" DLP TV, but have run into a problem. I am connecting my laptop to the TV via VGA cable (That's the only output on my laptop). When I tried to set the resolution to my TV's native 1920x1080, I noticed that it wasn't an available option. So, I WENT into my Nvidia control panel and created a custom resolution for 1920x1080. I was then ABLE to force a 1920x1080 output, which LOOKS great except for one problem: It doesn't fill up the entire TV. There seem to be 4 BLACK bands running along the picture, basically cropping it. So, my question is: how do I get my laptop to fill up my TV entirely? Here is a picture of the control panel and the settings I can adjust:

Here is a demonstration of the problem: (The black is the part of the screen not being used)

My graphics card is an Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS.

Thanks for your help.Looks good to me! Can you change?
Horizontal Total = ACTIVE Horizontal Pixels
Vertical Total = Active Vertical Lines

If not, it looks very good the way it is.there should be an option to change that in the control panel. I know with my ati card on win 7 theres a black border but thats easily fixed in ccc

Solve : Old HDD into new Computer?

Answer»

Hey all. The power supply on my friend's Dell (don't know the model number off-hand) recently "blew up" on him. It's an 8ish year old COMPUTER so he just wants me to build him a new computer. That being said, he wants all the information from the old Hard Drive on the new computer. Obviously i'm going to have to get him a new copy of windows, but if I slave the hard drive to a new one, will any information be lost? Other suggestions on an easier way are also appreciated. Thanks!Quote from: patsfan02832 on September 11, 2011, 05:38:20 AM

if I slave the hard drive to a new one, will any information be lost?

This is a common way of transferring files from an defunct computer. You should not LOSE anything provided the disk is not dead or damaged (and you don't format it!). Another way is to make the hard drive into an external USB drive, either by using a USB-to-IDE adapter cable or putting it into a USB enclosure. I presume the drive is IDE because you mention slaving it, but if you go down the USB route, whatever type the disk is, make sure you get the right adapter cable or enclosure.
OK i'll LOOK into that. I haven't taken a good look inside the case. If it is SATA, is there an adapter for that as WELL?Of course there is!

...If it is SATA, is there an adapter for that as well?
If it's SATA, you won't need an adapter, as the new motherboard will have multiple SATA ports. The adapter is the cheapest option. You could get the old stuff off the HDD with the ISE to USB adapter and have all that data pretty easily.
If your building the new computer it should be easy enough to slave the old disc. Some newer motherboards do have IDE connections too. Might wanna look into that when shopping aroundParagon software has an amazing program called P2P. Basically it resets windows drivers so a hard drive will boot on other hardware. So if you are supplying a new drive image there old drive to the new one run P2P and then plug the drive into the new computer. It will boot and allow you to load the new motherboard drivers.
the program as a 30 day trail is available from here

is there some driver or plug in like i downloaded in winamp that transforms 2 channel to 5.1 all the time

Err... if the media file is 2 channel you can't "convert" it to 6 channel...understand,but i thought if winamp or some players can use some plugin,to convert mp3 sound to 5.1,maybe there is something similar, like special sound driver or plug that can be INSTALLED in windows ,but it looks like there s no hope I'm not sure if it's available on other systems (it probably is but with a different name) but my sound card has CREATIVE X-Fi "CMSS-3D" which can upmix channels to 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound- allegedly.Quote from: BC_Programmer on September 09, 2011, 04:52:51 AM
I'm not sure if it's available on other systems (it probably is but with a different name) but my sound card has Creative X-Fi "CMSS-3D" which can upmix channels to 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound- allegedly.

Actually, the CMSS-3D feature works really well. I run 5.1 speakers on this computer with an X-Fi card. Even worked on my old Creative SB Live 24-bit card (came with the same software the new cards do). There are two modes with it, Stereo Surround which just plays the same left and right channels on the rear speakers (my preference) and Stereo Xpand which is a simulated "3D" mode, but I think it distorts and ruins the sound of a lot of music.

The Realtek software interface is usually pretty simple. I'm looking at the one on my wife's computer (Asus P5K SE with Realtek ALC 883 8 -Channel High Definition Audio) and I don't SEE any option for this. My laptop also has "surround sound" with an integrated Realtek chipset, but I've never been able to get it to play music surround, only files and DVDs that are already surround sound. While the Creative cards can do this, I don't think it's something Realtek ones can do.ok tnx.so the solution is to buy some other sound card ,but not realtek. If you want some suggestions on an affordable card that'll do what you need:

What's the model of your MSI motherboard?
What is your price range? My motherboard is MSI MS-7529 ,and the price price range should be around 20 euros not moreOk, from what I can tell that board only has 1 PCI Express x16 slot and 2 normal PCI slots. I'm going to suggest a PCI card instead of PCI Express just in case you want to pop a video card in there later (if you don't have one already).

Ok, first and cheapest (at $25) is the Creative Audigy SE:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102012

Second, if you want to spend a bit more, at $40 is the Creative X-Fi Xtreme: (this is the card I have in its PCI Express version, very nice)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102012

Both of these should include (or you can download from Creative.com) the Creative audio panel which will include the CMSS-3D function, as well as a number of other things. I really think you'll notice a difference in quality of sound as well as features with either of these cards over the Realtek chipsets. Also, both of these cards support up to 7.1 surround, in case you decide to upgrade you speaker system later.

Solve : Problems with my Maxtor external hard drive?

Answer»

I got a free Maxtor external hard drive from a co worker who is basically computer illiterate.

It is a maxtor model #3000ls, 40 gig capacity, FAT 32 file system, with a spin rate of 5400rpms.

I plugged it in and it works but when I checked the properties there is only about 328 mbs total size and only 300mbs of available space.

I did a virus scan, tried to a do an scan to automatically fix any file system errors and also did a scan for and attempt to recover any bad sectors.

I got nothing and it still has only 328mbs of total space.
Is this thing shot??? Any HELP would be appreciated.1. Root Directory. How many files are in the root directory within that FAT32 file system?

2. Disk MANAGEMENT. View the disk's structure within Disk Management to see how it's reported.

To access, select "Start" -> right-click "My Computer" -> select "Manage" -> within "Storage" category on left PANE of "Computer Management" window, select "Disk Management".Or DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics from MaxBlast....these can be used to wipe it and prep it for use...okay ...so I went into computer management and under my disc one (the external hard drive) it seemed to broken down into 2 sections.

One section is (112506 Partial (E.) 329 mb FAT32 healthy
there is about 301 mbs of free space

the other section is titled (Acronis SZ) 37.69 gb FAT 32 healthy (unknown partition)
there is about 8.21 gbs of free space

I can right click on the first section (112506 Partial (E.) and I get all the options...open, explore, change drive letter, format, delete logical drive, properties, help etc

but when I right click on the 2nd section (Acronis SZ) the only options are delete logical drive and help.

Acronis is a disk imaging app that creates virtual drives to store backups...
If you cannot boot to this drive and run Acronis the only option is to create a bootable Acronis floppy/CD to remove that virtual drive...
I'd still suggest running MaxBlast on it to wipe the drive entirely so it's full capacity can be used...Unplugged your Floppy and CD drive or just go to BIOS section and disable those option hope that can make some changes. Start over and format the drive.Quote from: patio on October 17, 2009, 10:44:35 AM

I'd still suggest running MaxBlast on it to wipe the drive entirely so it's full capacity can be used...

The drive APPEARS to be working. Suggest you take Patio's advice to wipe the drive and start fresh.

It's always been my experience there are things I don't want to know about others... So do everyone a favor and wipe the drive.

Solve : Dvd +- rw does not recognise blank dvd's?

Answer»

I had an NEC ND 3500A DVD BURNER that was working fine and all of the sudden I could no longer burn DVD's. It would play factory DVDs, burnt DVDs and Cd's. It would also burn Cd's but when I tried putting in a blank DVD the icon in "My Computer" went from being a DVD +- drive to CD drive with a DVD icon and it SAID that there was 0 bytes on the disk and 0 bytes free. I read some posts on other forums that said the burner may be fried. So after un-installing and re-installing the burner I decided to spend the $40 and get another burner. I got a Memorex 525G Reinstalled Windows(XP Home) installed the burner and drivers and to my DESPAIR the same prob. occured. No THIRD party software will allow me to write to a DVD either. I am using blank DVDs from the same package that I had already been using earlier with no issues. I am at my wits end and am ready to lose my marbles here. Can somebody PLEASE HELP ME !!!

Solve : USB Device not recognized?

Answer»

This is a larger issue than just my computer but for the sake of detail my recently built computer is where the problem occurred. I borrowed a friends external Western Digital hard drive to MOVE DATA from my old laptop to my newly built desktop. I was copying files from my laptop fine and as soon as I plug the hard drive into my new computer it says USB device not recognized. I've already plugged many devices in the same spot. The real issue is that now when I plug the hard drive back in my laptop it comes up as unrecognized even though it was working fine before. I plug it into my parents laptop and even my friends mac and it is still not recognized. Sadly this stigma has now moved to my printer after plugging it into my new computer and it will come up as unrecognized on any other computer.

I went through the whole process of checking if my drivers were updated, turned my computer off, but even with the help of my friend, who essentially built my computer for me, we couldn't figure out the problem. Any ideas at all would be great, this has a been an issue for quite some time. Do you have a backup?
No joke. You MAY have a virus that got into your USB drivers. Are you using the cord that came with your WD Hard drive? Try using another USB cord or a Dual USB Data Cable. Works for me. Some threads I have read on WD sites were about certain protection softwares interfering with the Hard drive. Worth a shot to see if it would make a difference.Thanx for the ideas, i will check into the whole virus issue and call my guy on that even though I do have an anti-virus, but to be safe I will give that a looking into

Its a friend's hardrive so yes I'm assuming the cord came with the WD hardrive, i will look into other usb cables, that would help a bunch if the problem was that simple.
But just to REITERATE, this happened to not only my friend's hardrive but my printer which uses a usb connection as well.

Again thanx for the replies. This seems to happen to a lot of people.

Solve : Choosing between two graphics cards....?

Answer»

Hello CH Members;

First off, the specs

Core 2 Duo E7400 @ 2.8GHz (stock)
ASUS P5KPL-CM MoBo
2GB DDR2 800Mhz RAM
Radeon X700 128MB 400Mhz (gpu) / 350MHz Memory (700Mhz in DDR)
OR
Geforce 6600GT 256MB 500Mhz Gpu / 1000Mhz Memory (2000Mhz in DDR)

Okay so here are my dilemmas:

I am somewhat of a gamer. I have both of these cards in my possession, (with another 256MB 6600GT on the way, even though i do not have an SLi Board)

The two games i want to play the most are: GTA:San Andreas and Bioshock.

Bioshock requires Shader Model 3.0, which the x700 does not have, and the game is so corrupt looking it is unplayable.

The 6600GT has SM3.0, however, when I play my GTA:SA, it is in 1280x1024 16 bit, so that there is a bit of a speed increase, and the colours go all funny. This is fixed when I revert to 32-bit, but the game goes too slow for my liking (40-60 FPS)

The x700 in 16 bit looks FINE though, which I think it wierd :S

Overall the 6600GT out performs the x700 by 5-10 FPS

So the TRADE off is colour/being able to play.

Does anyone know of a fix that would keep the performance in GTA, yet fix the colour in 16-bit for the 6600GT?You might have already done this, but make sure you have the latest version of DirectX, the latest version of NVIDIA's driver, and that any available patches for the game have been applied.Quote from: quaxo on April 16, 2009, 01:35:56 AM

I have the latest drivers. I'm running XP and have Direct X 9.0c, which is the latest, isnt it?

I don't know if they ever MADE patches for GTA, I'll take a poke around and see

There is one patch I can find, yet it does not address any issues like mine.

Any other ideas?Quote from: Kurtiskain on April 16, 2009, 04:20:13 AM

Any other ideas?

There are sometimes issues they don't mention in patch notes, either they forget or they just don't think it was important enough to mention. Just so we're not skipping any steps, might be best to go ahead and download and install it anyway, just so we can say 100% that isn't the reason.Just did some searching around. Some other people reported similar problems. Seemed to be that the desktop color depth needs to match the game. So if you want to run in 16-bit color, make sure your desktop color depth is set the same. See if that helps.I'll try that now No dice so far, perhaps it is the nVidia Drivers themselves? because the ATi ones work just fine One solution I found was to turn Frame Limiter on in the graphics settings of GTA:SA. It limits it to 30FPS, but supposedly corrects graphics issues like this, but it's even slower than the 40-60 you get in 32-bit color. Might just have to live with 40-60 fps.I decided I would play through Bioshock, then swap back to the Ati so that I get 80 FPS in my games again

Solve : C Drive space Low?

Answer»

Hello,
I have a Sony vaio PCV-RS530G, running windows xp.

I keep running out of space on my C drive, even though i'm not adding any new files. I keep clearing out my temporary internet files and DELETE files i no longer need, but i don't seem to be able to keep above around 90MB of FREE space no matter what i do. My C drive says its total size is 14GB, I'm unable to account for where all of the space has gone, I don't have that many rograms or files.

I tried running scandisk, nothing seemed to happen after it ran, nothing I could tell anyway.

Thank you to anyone who has any info. With 14GB HARD drive I think, you need a new, BIGGER drive.Try using glary utilitys it is a program that has a bunch of functions and one is called disk analysis and it shows you where all the memory is gone. Just don't use the regestry cleaner it causes more problems than it is worth. It is free and here is the link.
http://www.glaryutilities.com/
Hope this helps.and by means, do you have system restore on? I have win vista, system restore is on and I clean it out now and then and it frees up disk space. Probably that is what's eating up your hd space if you got nothing new and no malware creating duplicate files.

BTW--I had never heard of Salmon Trout (the actual fish) until I was in South America a few years back. Does your screen name relate to that at all?

My screen name was carried by a British railway locomotive, London And North Eastern Railway no. 2506. She was a member of the A3 Class, most of which were themselves named after famous British racehorses. "Salmon-Trout" with a hyphen won the 1924 St. Leger horse race. The locomotive was built in 1934. I have long thought the A3s were among the most handsome steam locomotives of their era, although in the picture below you can see the RATHER ugly smoke deflectors which were added in the early 1950s. The proportions of the boiler are still visible. Railways are a big interest of mine. A famous stable mate of Salmon Trout was no. 4472 "Flying Scotsman" which has been preserved.

And all along I thought Salmon Trout was a fish with an identity conflict. Quote from: install4you on August 27, 2011, 02:06:07 PM

This was a very skilled job. The fireman needed to know the road, its up and down grades, the locations of all the signals, as well as the driver, because there always had to be enough steam pressure in the boiler to PROVIDE the power necessary to keep the train on time. Also he had to totally manage the boiler WATER level, steam pressure, everything. Hard enough in a stattionery plant but much harder in a hot, smoky, noisy, rocking, moving, confined space.

Hmm... I was pretty sure he had onboard video. Under Graphics, Speccy only says this: Standard Monitor (1024x768 @1hz)

I searched for Asustek drivers but didn't find what you linked to, so I'm going to install that now and see what happens...

UPDATE: The chipset drivers did the trick, THANKS!!!! I'm connected and downloading updates to Windows, but I still have no idea about graphics. I'll open up the CASE once the updates are done and take a look.
OK, I opened up the case and found that he does NOT have onboard video (oops). He has an Nvidia 7200 gs, so I downloaded the drivers for that and fixed the graphics. However, when I look in the device manager, I'm still getting a network error. I believe he has a wireless card in there too if memory serves, so I'll go back in and see what it is and HOPE that the drivers for that will fix the one remaining issue. If it is an addon card get the drivers from the card manuf. site...Looks like windows solved it for me. Before updating windows I tried doing a driver search through the device manager, which didn't work. After updating windows, the driver search worked. Thanks for the help guys.Anytime...
In future use the manuf. site for all drivers as opposed to Windows Update...it rarely works .
Glad to hear you got lucky though...

Solve : graphics card suggestion??

Quote from: macdad- on April 16, 2009, 11:32:28 AM
I checked, my machine is a Dell Optiplex GX270 and its regular, orginal PCI but it does have an open AGP slot.

And also my monitor is VGA so the graphics card has to have a VGA connector.

My machine has a AGP slot open, and It was a custom refurbished rig that came with a 40GB HD.
I added a second 20GB HD from my old Dell Dimension.

And yes its "new to me" but heck, much better than my old rig, and I'm not complaining. Got it for a good deal(just the tower), used the monitor and KEYBOARD from my old Dell Dimension too. And bought a new mouse with the tower.
your CPU is over twice as fast as mine.

Well, unless you count my laptop.

Mine is a similar story, went from 350Mhz AMD K6-2 to 1.6Ghz P4. The difference is AMAZING! It wears off after a while as you GET used to the new speed, I think.I was amazed when i first boot mine up, 5 second boot up right to the login screen

But back on topic.

Thanks everyone for the input and all the suggestions were great as for VGA monitor, just get the DVI to VGA adapter dongle and it'll take care of the ISSUE of card not having VGA input.

Solve : DataStick Problem...?

Answer»

Recently, I purchased a USB 16 Gig Centon DataStick Pro to transfer "stuff" between my TWO computers. One is XP Home, the other XP Pro. I have had no problems with most transfers, documents, music etc., up to 14.5 Gigs at a time, until I tried transferring more than 10 Gigs of a movie avi. I get an error message stating that the drive is full and that I need to erase files in order to make room. However, the DataStick was empty at the time. When I click on the properties tab, it says the "E" drive has 15.1 Gigs of free space! MediaInfo says the avi file is 10.1 gigs. There should be plenty of room!
I once TRANSFERRED four smaller avi's at one time, a total of 14 Gigs, but the larger avi, even by itself, will not. I have tried other large avi files, but they will not transfer into the drive either. None of them were larger than 12 Gigs. It seems like 8 - 9 Gigs is the limit for an avi file. It does not matter which COMPUTER I try to use. Now, as this is my first stick, I can truthfully say that I'm not that familiar with them. I must POINT out that both the computer hard drives have NTFS file systems, but the DataStick is FAT 32. Could this be the problem, or did I buy a lemon? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Its the fat32 and NTFS difference i'm pretty sure. Fat32 can only transfer a file up to 2Gig i think. There is a tool that can transfer it to NTFS. Doing so will format your stick so make sure you whip it clean first. Yes I looked further into it. And its a 4gig file size limit with the FAT32 system. You make sense why you could transfer smaller file as they are likely under 4gig in size. This big file is too large for the FAT32 system. Thanks Lumpy44 for your quick response. Could you let me know what the tool is called?Darn, I'm getting good at this Google thing. I finally worded the search correctly and got the tool you mentioned and at the command prompt, typed in the convert E: fs/ntfs and now the stick loads the avi easy. Thanks again!Quote from: jwfilion on September 11, 2011, 05:46:30 PM

Solve : Display disappeared, boot problem, and fan control?

Answer»

Hi,

YESTERDAY I started experiencing my laptop display blanking, then received a display driver error in notification menu. Unfortunately, the only bit of the error I got was "display driver nvl.." or something.

I rebooted, Windows didn't start properly, then ran "Startup Repair" (a Vista autmated scan? not sure) which concluded "unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem" and recommended restoring to a System Restore point, which I click OK to.

Got to desktop ok, but the same error happened again re display driver (sorry, I didn't think to write it down).

I also at this point got another diagnosis application from Vista giving me errors with the Display driver, the specifics for the info on this are:

Description
A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

----------------------------------------------

I have copies of the other "files wthat help describe the problem", although I can't open the .dmp file.

Other things I then tried:
In Device Manager, I checked the Display adaptor, it was showing as working correctly. The driver files were showing from 2007. I clicked "update Driver" (Display Adaptor: NVIDIA GeForce 8400N GS), Windows searched for a driver for a while and began install.

But the SCREEN then crashed: grey colour with vertical lines. Also the fan started going on for 4 seconds, off for 4 seconds, on and off like that. I FORCED a reboot but really from then on I could'nt see anything on the screen.

Thinking it might be just the display affected, and the normal boot up might be visible 'underneath' it, I pressed F8, then Enter, hoping to start a Safe Boot. The screen did change slightly, I think maybe it did something. But I still couldn't see anything so I just shut down.

I left it overnight to today, and switching on I could reboot, it ran the Startup Repair, again suggesting a System Restore. This time I didn't accept. It kept scanning with "attempting repair" I think, then rebooted itself and I could log on to Windows. However, now the fan is on continuously, although I can log on and apparently use everything ok.

Note on checking the Display Adaptor driver now, it is:Date: 03/09/2008.

Current System information on Monitor is attached in Word Doc "System Information - Monitor.doc"

I am not sure what to do next. I am not aware of a "scan" I can do to check for problems. I am fairly
computer literate, working in IT support, although not the strongest on hardware faults.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Hi, does anyone have any ideas on what I can do to solve this?

I've done an MBAM (MALWAREBYTES' AntiMalware) and it picked up a Win32/Cryptor and a Trojan.TDSS, and seemed to clear ok.

When I start in Safe Mode with Networking, it starts ok, everything seems fine. When I start normally, the fan just goes continuously or on/off. Does that mean it's a driver/service issue, or a virus?
I'd say you still have a malware problem. Go here ...... Follow the directions and post the required logs for Evilfantasy to analyse.

Has the laptop be dropped or suffered some kind of physical jarring before this happen? This message usually means the hard drive has died or is in a state of failure that won't allow the computer to access it normally.

The first, and free, fix you should try is opening the hard drive compartment, remove the drive, then put it back in. While you've got it out, take note of the drive manufacturer's name.

If resteating it doesn't work, download the drive manufacturer's diagnostic tool. You can find links to the various manufacture's tools here:
http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Run the tool and see what it SAYS of the drive. No one better than the manufacturer to tell you if the drive is screwed or not. Try those things and if neither GIVES a clear answer, we'll try looking at some other steps.

Solve : screen locks up?

Answer»

Hi All,
My computer screen locks up after some Hr. of usage (~3), after each consecutive reboot sequence the time of play SHORTENS up, I have done the following;
1) virus, malware scan, clene.
2) Run WN XP file repair
3) Removed the cover and checked for hot component, applied large external fan, no change.
Any ideas?

Gershon
My guess would be that it's a "heat" issue. Blow out dust within the computer case with "canned" air (not a regular vacuum cleaner). Pay special attention to the CPU heat sink, memory MODULES, and video card. Don't let the fan blades spin at supersonic speed from the canned air (as much fun as that might be).

Don't remove the CPU "heat sink" UNLESS you're prepared to clean off and reapply the "thermal paste" to the interface plate between the two. The thermal paste fills in the microscopic air pockets to facilitate the flow of heat from CPU to heat sink.

Look for and start monitoring any heat sensors your computer system may have (read their VALUES under different processing loads). I think you may access values through CMOS setup of system BIOS (not very convenient) or look for "free" software that PROVIDES access to them. Ask if you need software recommendation. Everyone has their favorites.

Hint: Don't touch the computer chips. Aside from being very "hot", you could damage them via an electro-static discharge.

Solve : A big problem?

Answer»

My computer has gone really odd recently. I have no idea what's caused it but one day I switched it on and the screen was blue and my settings and documents were gone. Eventually I found my documents HIDDEN away in the hard drive. I want to remove this onto a portable hard drive, but when I plug this in a SMALL bubble pops up saying 'Found new Hardware', then a BOX comes up saying 'Install new hardware'. I try this, but every TIME a message comes up saying 'Cannot install this hardware'. This happens with new memory sticks and anything that I hadn't already used on it before. I'm currently using a borrowed laptop, because the internet on my computer isn't working properly either. When I load it up, it's fine, but when I try to enter a web page, it just keeps loading it, almost finishing and then reloading it. I think that ultimately I will have to buy a new computer, but I really want my documents first. I can't even put them on cd's because when I try it says: 'Incorrect Function'. Is there anything I can do?You don't have to buy a new computer-you just have to reinstall Windows with the Install DVD that came with your computer.

Try this first, though:
www.sensible-computer-help.com/safe-mode.html

Shows you how to boot into Safe Mode and run a chkdsk, which checks for file system errors.

If this fails you might want to get a hard disk enclosure to salvage your files to another PC before wiping your hard drive. How old is the computer?
Is it a laptop?
What OS?

If it is a laptop over three years old, it is time to buy a new one.Quote from: Transfusion on August 25, 2011, 06:42:25 AM

The computer has been switching itself off at random for a while so that is not a new problem, but it is now making the laptop completely unusable.

Solve : Nothing happens with external HDD?

Answer»

We found a Western Digital 400gb external HDD at a yard sale (cheap!!) with no documentation or cables. I have a plug with about 8 voltage settings from 1.5-12 volts. What is the voltage of an external HDD? I tried all of the voltage settings with it plugged into the computer and it doesn't show up.
Oh, and when I plug it in and when I set it to anything above 9volts I hear it spinning, but nothing happens on my pc.What kind of plug is it and where does it plug in to? If it had no cables what is the plug you refer to that has 8 voltage settings?Either provide a complete Western Digital Corporation (WDC) product number or go to their website yourself, IDENTIFY which drive you have, and examine the technical specs.

Come on now... Superman is dead.Quote from: cactuslizard on October 15, 2009, 02:17:47 PM

I tried all of the voltage settings with it plugged into the computer and it doesn't show up.

Where are you looking... My Computer, Windows Explorer, or Disk Management?

It's best to use Disk Management. If the drive (file system partition) isn't assigned a drive letter, it won't show up in the other places.

To access, select "Start" -> right-click "My Computer" -> select "Manage" -> within "Storage" category on left pane of "Computer Management" window, select "Disk Management".The power plug that goes into the wall is a multi-voltage plug, and it's plugged into the DC in connector, and it's a plug I already had. SORRY! I should of SAID that. I look for the "found new hardware" box to appear in explorer and I look in My Computer and it doesn't show up. Will look on WD website and check disk management.Quote from: cactuslizard on October 15, 2009, 08:21:32 PM
I look for the "found new hardware" box to appear in explorer and I look in My Computer and it doesn't show up.

So, you're saying the "found new hardware" box appears when the WDC drive is plugged in (USB cable?) ?An external HDD is not different.
Five volts and twelve volts is standard.
A small HDD, like for a laptop, needs five volts.

Solve : Blu-ray drive refuses to play BDs?

Have a custom build pc I bought APPROX 18months ago, running Windows 7 service PACK 1.

As of recent my optical disc drive (LG BH08LS20) is refusing to play blu-ray discs but still plays games and ordinary DVD's. Updated the drivers for most, TRIED with CyberLink and VLC player. VLC says "Your input can't be opened:VLC is unable to open the MRL 'dvd://D:\'. Check the log for details.". Still have MANUAL and disc for the drive, don't know where to start. CyberLink BD Advisor says pc is good to play BDs aside from graphics card driver and current service pack installed.

Thanks in advanced if anyone can help out.

JVLC Media Player isn't able to play Blu-Ray's by default, is it?
Which version of Cyberlink are you currently using?Try this link http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/249998-32-bh08ls20-drive-burner-problemsCouldn't sworn I've blurays on VLC by default, maybe not and I'm just being a tool.
Pretty sure I updated cyberlink lastnight, as I threw my LG disc in the drive to see if that did any good, just installed more cyberlink junk than was required as I'm not a big fan of cyberlink, it's a real ugly software. Plan is; i) unistall everything cyberlink related. ii.) unistall optical disc drive. iii.) unistall graphics/video card. and then re install them all. Thats with the help of you guys, I've never uninstalled any hardware.

I presume I'd go about it - right click My Computer, properties> Device Manager > double click DVD/CD rom drive> right click drive and unistall.

I'm sure I've got the discs for both drive and graphics disc (Super Multi Blue Install Disc for Windows, BH08N/LS20 and MSI afterburner graphics card performancer booster driver and utility)

Solve : Battery trouble - Dell laptop!!?

Answer»

I have a Dell Latitude 610 laptop which has a bad battery. I KEEP using it on electric power but I continually get "critical battery" popup balloons on the bottom right. Now the computer occasionally shuts down randomly or goes into Standby mode. I tried using it without the battery and it worked fine for awhile before shutting down. I thought using it without the battery would be OK?? Is it or not? Do I need to buy a new battery for it to operate properly? ThanksSounds like the battery is failing...there were recalls on Dell batteries awhile back so do some research on your Model# and see if you qualify for a Free replacement. You've already tried it without the battery & it WORKS. Something else is wrong. Sounds like the power inverter which charges the battery & supplies power to the computer is going out. Latitude D610 is not very new, is it?
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd610/en/ug_en/battery.htm#wp1054784Yes the computer should normally work without a battery in it and from the converter/charger only. However it could be that you problems are greater than a dead battery. Such as a poor/damaged charger or dc connection jack on the charger or computer end. It could also be a faulty or non operating fan. Could EVEN be a faulty or failing ram module. Could be overheating. If you can find and borrow a known good battery that is appropriate for your computer i would try that before going out and buying one. The charging unit may not be functioning properly. truenorth Quote from: nards01 on August 24, 2011, 04:37:55 PM

I tried using it without the battery and it worked fine for awhile before shutting down.
Longshot, but since you know the battery is bad, it may be a faulty (intermittant) connection in the power supply circuit. If you have a volt/ohm meter (or can beg, borrow or buy one, ~$20 at Walmart or Radio Shack), you might want to test the charger by plugging it into the wall and testing the DC voltage output at the connector that plugs into your machine. (meter set to DC~20volt scale - red lead connected to center of cable connector, black lead on outer contact surface of cable connector).Find a way to HOLD the meter leads steady then wiggle the cable that runs from the wall to the transformer, and also wiggle the cable that runs from the transformer to your machine(this will likely take 2 people).
If you see any major deviation in voltage output while wiggling the cables, this may be the culprit. If so, post your results to this THREAD and I can help you isolate which cable/connector is faulty.
Hope this helps.

http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/swu-list.pl?mdl=PCVRX741

It should be SIS 7012. The link contains everything you need for your model. For some reason I couldn't edit my post, so I will make a new reply to add something:
Did your computer originally come with Windows Vista installed? There's no official SiS 7012 Driver for Windows Vista. And your list MENTIONS that you're running XP. However, you can try a scan with Drivermax in an attempt to find a driver for vista.

Solve : Laptop : blue screen on start up?

I haven't got a windows CD i've tryed the drivers & Utilities version 8.01 Cd but that didn't work

Do you have the windows recovery console installed?I've just found two windows xp pro CD's at my mum's house which should be the same as my OS on laptop.
Can anyone advise me on what i should do next.
Boot up into the cd, go to the recovery console, and type in chkdsk /r.the question's easy I know nothing, so when i boot up same thing happens so how you guy's think you know surprises me first it as to load up then the BLUE screen ande trust me i can't get the cd to workwhen do i put the CD in the computer if i put it in to soon it laods up the same do i need to press f2 or f12 or f8 to get it to work
some one must know this stuff
two CD's that i've found at my mum's place. What i'm asking is how i upload them but both as it seems to all way's goes to screen/with option or unmountable undriver. What do i do.

This comment should certainly speed up the response time here...sorry about that comment family problems needed to focus on something my bad please take your time the cd's i found are copy's not the real CD so i'm hoping that they will work Apology accepted.

What does it say on the CD's and do you know what happened to the originals ? ?
Sometimes system CD's if copied and/or done incorrectly are just drink coasters...Hi, well the CD'S just says "win xp pro" both have been copyed so i presumed that there the copy of the real CD. When i brought the laptop it was refurbished and i didn't get a CD but i did get the sticker at the back with the code on so i know it's a real version of windows You need to borrow a real XP CD to do the re-install...i wouldn't trust the burned copies no mattter what they say on them.
Most XP CD's cannot be simply be copied and burned and this is where most people screw up...

NOTE: The XP Version and installed SP's need to match to do an install...however if doing a format and clean install only the Versions need to be the same.

Best of Luck.

PS>. MAKE sure to collect the drivers for re-install...this is especially critical with laptops to run properly...One more thing if i re-install the hard ware do i still keep my files and stuff
Apart from that thanks for you time.Quote from: Believil on September 30, 2009, 10:39:02 AM

You will need to back up any DATA on that drive that you want to save BEFORE doing any of this as it will be gone when you START the process...
If you need direction on backups post back for more info...Ok
I ran my Diagnostics and every thing passed except --Start DST Short Test-- which failed Eorror Code 1000-0146 MSG : Unit 0 :DST Log contains previous error(s).
So I continue A white box appears "No Diagnostics Partion Found. insert CD to resart the system and BOOT off the CD." so i press OK
I got my CD to work "not the real CD but the copy" and i'm left with a few options and not sure which buttons to press next.
Options i'm left with are as follows... 1 - To set up Windows XP, press Enter
2 - To repair a windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press 8
3 - To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3
Any Help from here would be Great thanks

Solve : WHAT ARE THE EFFECT OF RAM,HEAT SINK AND COOLANT ON COMPUTER?

Answer»
HI my GUYS,WELL done
What are the negative effect of ram, heat sink and coolant(GEL) on computer.i.e what are the likely signs to see if these materials go faulty or bad or damageIf your RAM goes wrong, you might have extremely slow boot times, computer randomly crashing, etc.
www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1565
How to diagnose bad RAM.

If you have not applied CPU thermal paste, please do so as it maximizes heat conduction between the CPU surface and heatsink.

The heatsink is a piece of metal-it cannot go "faulty." The fan can go faulty, though, and if your computer temperatures are abnormally high (you can check your CPU temps in your BIOS or with SpeedFan/Piriform Speccy.), the fan may be suspect.
