Solve : Video/Graphics Adapter?

Answer»

Am looking for a new computer to run some GIS software, but sellers only give very VAGUE info about the video cards.. My question is what kind of video/graphics adapters MEET the following SPECS: 24-bit capable graphics accellerator, and OpenGL 1.3 or higher video CARD with 64MB of memory?Practically any new card on the market now will exceed those REQUIREMENTS.

Solve : Clean install?

Answer»

Hi All, I'm due to receive my new copy of Win 7 any day now. I have 2 HDDs both 250gb C & E. I backup to E drive. WOULD you ADVISE physically disconnecting drive E before installing 7? The reason I ask is I had to re-install Vista RECENTLY & during the process it appeared to format E at the same time thus I lost all my files. I did specify to install on C at the time. Is it possible to format drive C before install so it is on a 'clean' HDD? Thank you in anticipation of you advice. Alexma"IT" didn't format e: drive, you did. The install process (for any OS) will only do what you tell it to - and before it will format any drive or partition you have to "OK" it several times. Just boot to the Windows 7 DVD and START the install procedure. It will ask where you want it installed and will ask if you first want to format that drive / partition. Just pay attention during the process and you'll be fine.

Solve : Dell Dimension C521 Processor upgrade?

Answer»

So I have this computer which is Dell Dimension C521, yes the slim one. And I currently have single core, and untill recently I found out I could have a dual core processor, well since it's a pretty old computer the processors should be pretty cheap, but then majority of processors that are AMD Athlon 64 x2, well they are very hard to find because they are no long distributed.

So I need help on at least telling me what name should I be looking at or a link if possible to the processor.
Here is one of the processors I found
http://www.acmemicro.com/estore/merchant.ihtml?pid=3748&lastcatid=357&step=4
I wonder if it will work.
If it does, then does ANYONE know of any better ones?

and also here are some pictures of my stuff.
Thanks in advance.

[SAVING space, attachment deleted by admin]I'd check with Dell 1st but it looks like from the info you have provided that board should take any AM2 AMD CPU...can't ask them, their forum isn't working.
I've asked similar question on the other forum where they help with the computers too but they said that
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103210
won't work, well they said that it might and might not work.
And this one won't either
http://www.digiconcepts.com/amd_cpus_235.htm
all because it's Brisbane meaning it has different VOLTAGES and stuff, so I'm a bit confused. :STheir Forum is working...what link did you clik ?yea I found out that it's working now... apparently Dell hates Firefox lol, I was unable to get in with Firefox but able to get in with Internet Explorer. All your answers will be there...Yea they said all of the processors I showed should work, and well... I hope so, kuz I just ordered that newegg processor the 5200+What does kuz mean ? ?kuz means because.
Never heard of slang lol?Nope.Well now you know.

Solve : PC Sometimes Stuck at BIOS?

Answer»

So I have a Compaq Presario as follows:

AMD Athlon 64x2 4200+ (2.2ghz)
3GB PC2-6400 RAM (2GBx1, 1GBx1)
ATI HD4550 512MB GDDR3
160GB HD
Modem
250w PSU
Windows 7

Sometimes when I try to power on the machine, it will get stuck at the Compaq logo BIOS SCREEN. It won’t advance past that. The first time, I reseated all the connections on outside of the machine and popped off the case. The machine booted into Windows normally. The problem then went away for a few days.

Today, the Compaq did the same THING again, GETTING stuck at the BIOS screen. This time I just popped the case off and the computer booted.

What’s the issue here? How can I got about solving it? What should I try first to resolve the issue?

Thanks for the help.

...The first time, I reseated all the connections on outside of the machine and popped off the case. The machine booted into Windows normally. The problem then went away for a few days....
Now do the same thing inside the machine. Something is probably loose.
Remove and reseat all connections one at a time, including the RAM sticks.I decided to make sure the connections inside were tight and connected well. If the issue happens again, I will disconnect and reconnect everything one-by-one. I did notice a few connections that were a little loose, but nothing too out of the ordinary. You may want to upgrade your power supply. It's a little low for this type of machine.

Go with at least 450W or 500W

It's a store bought Compaq Presario. The PSU is what came with it.I switched off the "hidden boot" option in the BIOS so that it shows the hardware testing at the beginning and the problem has gone away (for now). I'll update if the issue returns.

Solve : Looping during Re-boot?

Answer»

Need some help.....got up the other morning and computer was trying to reboot....thought nothing of if, thot the power might have flickered or something. However, before I left for work.....it was still trying to re-BOOT. It's like it's in a LOOP....it brings up the Windows XP sign with the scrolling blue bar at the bottom.....but never fully re-boots. It came up with a screen that said windows didn't shut down properly....choose start normally......safe mode....last good configuration.....have tried everything.....keeps looping.....Any suggestions. It's an EMachines.....that's about all I know. Using work compputer right now.1. Are you able to boot into "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"?

Are there any files on the DRIVE that you do not want to loose?Reboot. As soon as the system POSTs start tapping the F8 Key. When you get to the boot options screen select: Disable Restart on Error
Reboot
Do you see a blue screen error message? If so, POST the entire contents of that screen here. This happened to me too on my old computer. I had to get a new HDD...Quote from: Kasaioni on October 15, 2009, 03:19:41 PM

This happened to me too on my old computer. I had to get a new HDD...
And we're not going to rule out that possibility here - but just because a bad hd was the cause of your problem does not guaranty that's the problem here. We're going to try a few things before suggesting the poster spends money.I did get the blue screen which is about 5 lines.....space....about 5 more lines....it stays on the screen for about a second.....not even time to read it, much less write it down and post. Once it puts it up and it goes away.....it wont come back up when looping through the next time.

And No, it wont boot up in any mode. I've already replace the hard drive on this one once, this hard drive was bought at Best Buy, and looks like I may have to replace again.

An IT guy gave me instructions once before......DOS prompts to get in and repair the partitions, and of course, I have SINCE missplaced them. Was hoping someone on here might know how to do that. Please be advised.....I'm computer illiterate! I can only operate one......not diagnose nothing. LOLAssuming you are running XP, boot to the CD and choose the first repair option (press "R"). That will take you to the Recovery Console. Once there, run chkdsk /r. It will take a while to complete - let it do so.Check your RAM, bad stick can make that happen.K, will try this afternoon.....thanks!!!!

Solve : Extra HD / Synctoy Problem?

Answer»

I recently bought an I-0 DATA 1.0TB HD for extra backup and STORAGE. I have been using synctoy to regularly backup my important files and folders from my main laptop. Every time I run synctoy (I usually do so in the "contribute" mode), I get a "corrupt file" response. In ADDITION, my backup procedure quits and it says "Exception during preview: The FileSyncProvider failed while detecting CHANGES." Although I was originally ABLE to syncronize my laptop files and folders with the HD, I can no longer finish a simple "contribute" task. I have another 160GB HD (Buffalo) which works just fine in the same manner. I had another 250GB HD that also failed completely on me and I can no longer use it either.

Can any tell me what the problem is and how to rectify it?Run the HDD diagnostics on the laptop drive.

Solve : 45 gigs of hard drive space vanished.?

Answer»

This was a 500 gig hard drive last night. I was testing my RAM one gig at a time and after the FIRST time I started up the computer with one stick (1 GB) of RAM, 45 gigs of my hard drive was gone. I now have all my RAM BACK in (3 x 1 GB) and it's still gone. I tried this and this...the first wasn't applicable and the second didn't do anything except FREE up extra space, but my HDD remained at 465 gigs.

I'm stumped, can anyone help?System Restore is a likely culprit. And the system reserves 12% of the drive for future MFT expansion. You can download Treesize Personal and see where the usage is: http://www.jam-software.com/treesize_personal/ Indexing will gobble some of that up as well. Are you sure? This happened literally between one restart, and I've had system restore enabled forever. And it doesn't just use up some hard drive space, it will take some and make it appear to not exist anymore? I've never experienced that with system restore before. I'm not saying that something suddenly took up 45 gigs of space, I'm saying 45 gigs of space ceased to exist - that's supposed to say "500 GB" and it did 12 hours ago.

Chart Courtesy of Western Digital...

Nothing Vanished.Any idea why it would suddenly change the way it calculates size after doing it the other way for 2 1/2 years? This confuses me..My first thought is, it's a 500GB hard drive, which would give you around 465GB. To my knowledge there hasn't been any 550GB HDD's made..(which would give you 500GB HDD space.

It's possible some 3rd party program was installed that displayed the drice in decimal instead of binary..if anything would do that.

Maybe someone else has been using your computer and messing with stuff?

If you take a look inside, the hard drive will say how BIG it is..if it's a 500GB, then you'll get 465GB. I know, I hate the FACT manufacturers do this too.

Solve : DVD-Drive problem?

Answer»

I don't see 4 lasers on my drive. I found just one laser till from my purchase. It's quite interesting. Really i don't know about them. What do you mean, you don't SEE any lasers? Did you take the drive apart??I'm RUNNING my notebook with ac power ( very poor battery backup). In the beginning all the peripherals all at low temperature even my DVD drive but at later times it's (temperature) going to increase beyond the CERTAINS limits over 80C. I think this may be the problem, isn't it ?

Can you provide me more information regarding how to decrease this temperature of my drive. And one more ISSUE is that "how to clean my drive ?"What drive are you talking about?

What temperatures?

How are you reading these temperatures?I'm talking about Acer aspire 4720 DVD RW Drive.
I read the temperatures by using http://www.almico.com/installspeedfan439.exe software.
The temperatures of my peripherals are increasing gradually upto 80C-83C(processor) and 52c(harddisk) . At the beginning they were low. It's only natural that computers (especially laptops) get hot when they're powered on.

The best you could do is avoid running high-intensity / demanding programs or games for prolonged periods of time, keep the VENTS clear and unobstructed, and keeping the temperature of the room down.

Solve : So confused.?

Answer»

LOL thank you Geek-9pm I wish I could tell all the soldiers not to use their laptops when the sun is out. I really didn't know they had a temp limit though. Although in hindsight that does make sense. I will say this EVEN things sealed the entire time while in Iraq came back swimming in the moon dust that is the sand out there. Sadly it's unavoidable.

I really thought I would replace the RAM, if it hadn't been for CC I would never had known it could be cleaned that way.

I will be sure to read over the link, thanks again Geek-9pmHmmmmm new problem. While I've been thanking everyone for their help I uninstalled Norton that was on the laptop and Installed Spybot and Malware Bytes. Malware found no issues Spybot found a bunch and cleaned up what it could saying that some items could not be fixed with out a RESTART and asked if it "may run at windows start up" I clicked yes and restarted. At the 90% of Spybot on the restart i tapped the power cord and I mean that literally I "tapped" the cord, the screen dimmed it said to plug in or risk losing all of the information and before I could click ok or try and fix it, it shut down.

After lots of cussing and threating of USB ports with spoons, I calmly collect myself resettled everything and turned it back on. Everything booted up and I was flooded with Command Promts. After about 5 minutes of watching them flash they all stopped and 6 of them stayed up. I haven't touched anything and they've gone away. They were all blank never said anything and now I'm officially afraid I've pissed off the laptop gods and don't want to touch it.

Should I be worried about this, should I reboot and see if it happens again?

Help again please.UPDATE: Cleaning the RAM and slot yielded no improvement the stick is shot going to work on sending it back for a replacement to Kingston. Updated the system, apparently it had been off so long there were 27 updates.

No more command prompts SPAMMING my screen. Sad I had hoped the RAM would work. OH well guess I will have to deal with a very slow laptop. Can someone point me in the right direction where I could find out how much RAM the MB can handle?

Thanks again guys for being my sounding BOARD while I work on the moody laptop. So don't want to buy a new CD drive either. For memory capacity & type go to www.support.hp.com OR www.crucial.com

For HP - Compaq Pavilion dv8000t Series Laptop/Notebook (not sure about the 8000t).
http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Pavilion%20dv8000t%20Series
It says max capacity is 2GB, for model 8000t.

You might be able to find a used CD-Drive for a reasonable price at: http://www.laptopservice.com/
or just search Google. Thanks again Computer_Commando you keep coming to my rescue and I'm going to owe you big time .

By the way love your sig, first time I saw it I was a little weirded out especially b/c the little creature kept changing but after a bit it kind of grew on me.

Now off to find a new project to keep my hands busy.......
Idle hands get me into so much trouble.

~wanders away~It's mossible the RAM slot itself is bad and not the RAM.

I had a problem with my PC earlier this year, couldn't use it for a month. Long story short, after one day I was bored and took the first stick of RAM out of my PC. It booted fine. For some reason I decided to put that stick of RAM into the 3rd slot. It worked. 1st slot went bad for some reason

Solve : It won't run?

Answer»

If you open the hood, can you tell if the engine has good compression or is burning oil?
BTW, disk drives are not serviceable, but you can run tests on them, if it starts (spins).spins, that is why it's called a disk drive, duh, I'm getting it but am a little slow on the uptake it seems. Well, wish me luck, I'm going in. I take it with the cover off and the machine turned on there is a mechanism in there that will be big enough to have something spinning INSIDE of it and this will be the disk that the machine says isn't there and in my very plain terms, no SPINNY no worky? right? hmm I wonder if it doesn't work can I take the disk drive outta this Gateway and put it in there or is that like trying to put Ford parts in a Chevy?

How Hard Disks Work

Like putting a Ford engine into a Ford car, but there's many different size engines/transmissions. Gotta have the right engine for the transmission.OK thanks for the visual there is nothing in there that resembles that, I was looking at a square box thing with a fan on it that connects to a circuit board via a pair of clamps that everything connects toso with my IP logged in this site knows even what operating system I'm using? kinda spooky but I'm getting over itQuote from: benton1964 on October 18, 2009, 04:19:33 PM
OK thanks for the visual there is nothing in there that resembles that, I was looking at a square box thing with a fan on it that connects to a circuit board via a pair of clamps that everything connects to
It's there, you probably will see it from the side, not the top. Look for a wide flat grey cable from the big main circuit board (motherboard).I have removed this UNIT again as when I replaced it before when I turned it back on the machine wouldn't operate at all, a closer inspection of it shows that the reverse side of it has many little pins and in my hamfisted way i bent one of those pins, attempting repairsUm OK I have the flat cable located there are two, one goes to the cd rom drive the other goes nowhereIn your 1st post, you said it had a 100GB hard drive, maybe it's disconnected. There's 2 cables to each drive: data (the flat one) and power (red, yellow, black wires). Drives can share the data cable, if it has 3 connectors.I only said it had a 100 gig hard drive because that is what the machine says on the front cover, the boot menu kept telling me there is no hard drive and now that you've shown me the picture and explained that one of those flat cables plug into it I can see that the drive isn't broken or damaged, it simply isn't there. Thank you for the information, I'm going to open the Gateway now and see if I can steal the drive from it. That's what i get from buying a 20 dollar 'puter at a yard saleInstalling a PC IDE/EIDE hard driveOK I have extracted the hard drive from the gateway it is an odd device on the other thread (SCSI isn't there) I was saying that the tower had two CD drives and two floppys. I was wrong. One of those "floppys" is the hard drive it has a door, it's some kind of tape player, maybe it isn't a hard drive at all?well the drives are incompatible, the pins are different from the gateway to the emachine and whatever I did by removing the square thing with the fan (some type of heat sink I deduce) destroyed the emachine anyway. Target practice it is! I just want to thank everyone here who posted on this thread and the other I started, I have learned quite a bit and I can take this knowledge and move on to the next project.

Solve : Computer Keeps Rebooting?

Answer»

Ok I need help guys.

Quick run down: My computer started having really bad artifacts so I pulled my video card out and had it tested at a local computer shop and they said it was bad. I RMA'd it and they sent me a 8800gt (had a 7950gt) I put it in and the started getting one long beep and 2 short beeps.

So i replaced my PSU to "corsair TX650w" had a (Antec 400) now I get the boot screen with no beeps but it runs the Memory TEST and reboots, just does that over and over. I tried ESC to skip memory test, reboots and starts it again. I tried letting the memory test run and it reboots and starts again. I tried DEL to enter bios and it reboots and starts again.

I pulled all memory and tired each one, one at a time and get the same thing. Tired 4 different sticks. All sticks work fine in the wifes computer. ALSO I cleared the CMOS.

What MBoard so we can determine what the beep codes mean...

Asus A8N5X
Hey guys I found this troubleshoot guide. I get all the way to number 13 and the computer runs the memory test and keeps rebooting. Someone please help me out here. I tried 4 different sticks of memory and in different slots. The first slot i get one beep on POST and it see's my cpu then the memory test starts and just reboots and starts over, can't get in the bios either. If i put a stick in any other slot I get 1 long beep and 2 short beeps. I'm thinking the mobo is bad.

1 Nothing but the power SUPPLY, CPU,installed on the motherboard, plug your power cord in and turn power on.
2 You should hear a series of long beeps & all your fans should be turning.
3 The board is looking for memory.
4 That tells you your 'board, CPU & power supply are working.
5 Unplug power cord (very important an ATX power supply always has power to it when the cord is pluged in).
6 Install 1 stick of RAM in the first bank, it should be marked either 0 or 1
7 Plug your power cord in and turn your power on.
8 You should get 1 long and 3 short beeps. It will be looking for the video card.
9 That tells you your PS/'board/CPU/RAM are working.
10 Unplug power cord.
11 Install your video card and plug your monitor into your video card.
12 Plug your power cord in turn your power on.
13 You should get a power up test which is 1 short beep.
14 You should see your CPU/RAM/video reconized on the screen.
15 You will get a disk boot failure because you have no drives installed. In this case every thing you have installed is working.
16 Shut machine down and unplug power cord.
17 Install all your drives, set your BIOS up and install your operating system.

Solve : Erase Only Data Files????

Answer»

I want to erase all my personal data files from a COMPUTER I'm getting rid of. I searched the FAQ's and found some free utility programs. What's not CLEAR to me is whether I can completely remove all my personal data and still leave the operating system and program files in place. Can anyone help?If you do it from within the OS then you can do anything you like with data files and the OS will be fine. Thanks, Allan, for your quick response! Now, is anyone FAMILIAR with any of the utility programs listed in the FAQ's (Eraser, Harddisk Eraser, NecroFile, Permanent Erasure, SDelete) to recommend one to use? Is there another free utility out there that would do the job for me?Do you have your windows disk?Just delete the files, empty the recycle BIN, and defrag the drive. Unless you work for the CIA I wouldn't be too worried about someone trying to recover your deleted files.Quote from: fordee9r on October 17, 2009, 10:22:42 PM

Solve : Display issues?

Answer»

I re-booted my computer the other day and now it will not display anything on the monitor. I have re-booted many times to the same result. I hooked the monitor up to another computer and it worked fine. I've TRIED to start the computer up in safe mode (using F8) and have yet to succeed at that either. What are my next steps to take? I'm at a loss. Thanks - PaxPax...

First thing to do would to make sure you have no loose CABLE connections.

Always check the cable connections with the computer powered off...and unplugged from any and all power sources.

Also make sure the monitor is off when performing these checks.same as before......If you are using a separate video card...Have you checked to see if the card is SEATED in its slot on the motherboard properly?

Also, is there more than one CONNECTION on your computer to hook up a monitor? Some motherboards and computer manufacturers have onboard video...check that, as well.

Also open BIOS to check your video settings...whether or not you have disabled onboard video.I get absolutely NO SCREEN image at all so I have no idea as to how to check my BIOS. It has a video card and was seated properlyIs there an onboard connection you can try?

Could be the hardware device is bad, or a Power Supply issue.

Solve : Help re-directing info?

Hello, new to the forum. I have a Sony Vaio desktop that is about 7yrs. old. It came with a C drive VOLUME/D drive volume ratio of about 1 to 4. Now that I've accumulated quite a bit of info, the C drive has about 19% available space, while the D drive hardly has a dent in it. I always save everything to the D drive, however there always seems to be items that save to the C drive(my docs, program files being the most prevalent)which build up over time. Is it possible to move the target location of things like program file to the D drive,or would a partitioning program help? THANKS DanNormally on laptops the D: drive is reserved for the restore partition...
Post more details on the capacity and used space on C: and D: and we'll go from there...Patio, thanks for the reply. Here's some info:

D-drive capacity.........59.6GB Used........5.87GB Free..........53.7GB

If you use My Documents folder to keep files in, you can move the whole folder to D drive. To do this, right click on My Documents to open the Properties panel. Click on the Move button, select D:\ or a folder on D:\ as the destination and proceed. This will also move the My Music and My Pictures folders, since they are normally under My Documents.

To move programs to D drive, you would need to UNINSTALL them and then reinstall them, selecting D drive or a folder on it (such as Program Files) as the location when installing the program.soybean, thanks for the info. Got another gig and 1/2 free space on my c-drive.

Solve : USB 2.0 runs at 1.1 speed?

Answer»

This is the 2nd time I've had my 2.0 card run at 1.1 speed. The other day I had a SD/MMC Card reader hooked up to a cable, which is connected to the 2.0 card. I could not find the device in Windows Explorer.

Well I haven't tried using the device for some time now, maybe 2 or 3 weeks. And now I can see it in WE. The only problem is, it's running at 1.1 speed. I know I've fixed this before, but I cannot remember what I did.

Can someone remind me? And does anyone know what could be making it go back. I have WinXP Home Ed. SP3. I've gone to MS Help & Support, and they said that this was corrected with SP3.how do you know it's running at 1.1 speed?aye, how do you know its running only at 1.1 speed?

Maybe you should plug the card in, because the "hooked up cable" might be bottlenecking the card speed.l I get the balloon that says: This device could run better if hooked up to a 2.0 card.Quote from: iamyourmom on April 01, 2009, 07:44:29 PM

I've taken the cord out. Waited for the system notification sound. Waited a few seconds, and then reinserted the usb cable to the 2.0 card. And I still get the balloon saying that the device would work better if it were ATTACHED to a 2.0 usb card.Quote from: UncleAaron on April 02, 2009, 06:18:10 AM

It is the cable!!! it is bottlenecking the transfer. try plugging the SD card directly in. If you open Device Manager and expand the section for UNIVERSAL Serial Bus Controllers, do the titles of any item include the word "enchanced"?

Here is how it shows up in Device Manager.Quote from: UncleAaron on April 01, 2009, 06:25:15 PM
This is the 2nd time I've had my 2.0 card run at 1.1 speed.
Is this "card" an add-on USB card installed in a PCI slot? If so, how many USB ports does it have? Why did you install the card? Were you having problems with onboard USB? How long have you had it installed in your computer? Has it worked alright until the recent instances where it gave you the message indicating it was working at 1.1 speed?

When you installed the card, did you have to install a driver for it or did Windows recognize it without you installing a driver? The other day I moved the USB EXTENTION cable--The one I use to hook up a Converter Drive for attaching SD/MMC CARDS to the computer without going to the back of the computer to hook them up--to a USB 1.1 connector, and copied files from my SD card to the computer.

This morning, I copied some files, and when I turned on my printer (still connected to the 2.0 card), the balloon showing that: "Your device could run better if attached to a high-speed USB card" didn't come up. So I then moved the extention cable to the 2.0 card, and to my amazement, I didn't get that balloon to show up for it either.

Not sure what happened. I guess XP is recognizing it sometimes, and not other times. I guess I'll just have to keep going back and forth with it.

On one of the M$ KB articles it said this was corrected with SP3. I find that hard to believe, because my machine has SP3.

Oh well, THANKS for the help. I do appreciate the responses I got. Have a great weekend everyone. Quote

Your card USB ports are 2.0....all others on that machine are 1,1or I have fixed this before by reinstalling the drivers for all USB devices/controllers/hubs

Solve : Basic FlashDrive question?

Answer»

In the taskbar, in Windows, there is an icon that you click on, and when doing so it allows you to "safely remove" the flashdrive from your comptuer. What is the danger in removing the flashdrive without clicking on the "safely remove" feature?? USB devices are powered through USB port, and ALSO the data is TRANSFERRED through it.
In THEORY, by simply yanking USB device out of the port, the damage may occur to the port, and to the data on USB device.
However, the CHANCES are really slim.
In older Windows versions, and in early XP version, there was an issue of delayed writing (write caching) to USB devices, so the system was less busy.
If that transfer was interrupted by removing the device, the data had a good chance to get corrupted.
In updated XP, or Vista, write caching is DISABLED by default, so, if you're not using any program, which is actually using USB device at the moment, removing USB device without using "Safely remove", shouldn't cause any problems.
Personally, I never use it, but, if you want to be double safe....thx

Solve : desktop pc boots strangely?

Answer»

Hi all,

I made changes to my HP m7330n desktop and sometimes I have problem when booting up. Two things happen: 1) PC starts and fans go one full speed but then nothing happens (no display or sound of HDD working) and fans stay on high speed forever unless I disconnect the power or hold the power button for 6-7 secs. 2) THEN after holding the power button to turn it off and starting it again after 6 secs, as soon as I press the power button, it starts to flash blue&orange alternatively.

This is the current list of hardware:
Athlon X2 4200+ (stock)
RAM 2X512MB (stock)
HDD 250 Seagate 7200 (stock)
HP DVD-ROM and HP DVD-RW (stock)
VGA PNY nVidia 128 PCI EXPRESS (added)
Motherboard MS 7184 emachines (added in place of MS 7184 HP - since the vga port was not working properly and also I suspected that mobo was the cause of the problem with booting)
PSU Dynex 400W DX-400WPS (added- replaced Bestec ATX-300-12Z, I suspected that booting problems were caused by lack of enough power)
TV CARD AND MODEM TAKEN OUT

Sometimes when I get the flashing blue&orange I take everything out and boot with mobo and cpu only and it works (I mean no strange boot problems, but stops since no HDD), and later on, adding other components won't cause a problem.
It is totally random and sometimes PC boots up fine and sometimes I get the flashing lights.
I appreciate your help. This is driving me crazy, it's so strange!!!

OmidCan you remember any of the changes you made? Just hardware, or settings too, etc. How old is the motherboard?

Check and reseat memory modules, check the cpu is completely flush to the MB, check that the back end of the video card doesn't move out of the slot when you screw it down, check all connections.......You were in the the case, so some component may have been dislodged inadvertantly.

Next time this happens go into Control panel>Administrative Tools>Event Viewer>...........Click on System on the right hand side and see if the problem is listed........Check the Applications on the right hand side as well and look for problems.

Also, try a cold boot ....... Turn the PC completely off with the power supply switch on the back of the PC. Give it a minute or so, then turn on the switch on the back and press the power switch on the front. This will sometimes do the trick.I made hardware changes only, and the motherboard is recently bought and installed. Also I checked all installations and everything looks fine. Cold boot does not work!!
At this POINT I only encounter two errors that i mentioned above, and nothing is displayed on the monitor. My final guess is that something must be wrong with CPU, since MOBO+CPU boot doesn't work now. what do you think?
Anyway, thank you for your help.

Omid Seems like Your motherboard is dying Was thermal compound applied when you replaced the MBoard ? ?
Is the Dynex PSU still under warranty ? ?
To see if it is the culprit borrow a known good one of 400W or greater and swap it in there overnight. There was thermal compound on both cpu and heatsink when I installed them on the new motherboard.
the PSU is new and I GOT it around 2 weeks ago from bestbuy.
The motherboard was new so I guess cpu is the problem.

Thanks for helping.

Omid

Why do you think that is the case? How old is the CPU and did it exhibit any erratic behaviour prior to this ? ? Because my server had recently the very same simptoms. It's booted like this for about month or so, and it ended up refusing to boot at all. Well, maybe CPU is the problem, I shell not argue with the guru ... but the new motherboard could spoil as well.

Around 2.5-3 years. I cannot say if it malfunctioned before or not, since I mostly focused on the mobo when problems started. I believe 3 years is not a very LONG time for a CPU but what I see at this point suggests that CPU is the problem. Athlon's old CPUs are going for over $70 on eBay, Yikes!!

Solve : No Sound, was Missing PCI Driver?

Answer»

After a motherboard/processor failure, I have replaced the Intel Board Pentium 4 3GHZ dead 'un with a Micro-ATX GeForce 7050M-M motherboard with onboard graphics and enhanced onboard sound, as the computer does not have to do anything stretching. This has an AMD Dual Core 6000 processor attached (it was a motherboard BUNDLE).

Twin SATA HDD's are still installed as per before, as are 2 IDE drives, a DVD Rom and a DVD RW, and a Floppy. These all work.

This is in XP Pro running in Safe Mode (as currently it won't boot though normally).

My problem seems to centre on Device Driver which reports a PCI device being unable to work DUE to no PCI driver loaded in "Other Devices", but gives no direct indication of WHAT device. Cannot see any other error messaging.

There are two PCI slots and one PCI Express slot, but with onboard, nothing in any of them.

I have however discovered that there is only sound from the internal speaker, beeps, etc, and sound files loaded to Windows Media Player by double clicking them report a problem with or a missing sound device.

Is the onboard sound using PCI I wonder..................info with the motherboard is not clear and being in Safe Mode does not help.

I have allowed Windows to search for PCI drivers on Motherboard CD, XPPro CD, and Internet (Safe Mode with Networking), to no result.

Oh, and don't know if connected or not, but while it boots into Safe Mode and runs OK, it takes an AGE to shutdown................

Hope I have given enough info, berate me if not....... .........any ideas please?

That board uses Realtek HD audio.
A bad install of that will create an unknown PCI device.

Look in Device Manager>System devices for either the HD Audio Controller or the MS UAA Bus driver.
Are either there?

Also, are you updated to SP3?

Hi,

Thanks for post.................Delay as been away................

HD Audio Controller not found in lists. MS UAA Bus Driver for HD is listed and reports working OK

SP3 installed (was doing it before and after)

In Sound PROPERTIES, the Realtek device appears, but system won't allow status report in Safe Mode.

With the old MB this system had a PCI sound card, Creative Audigy. I have tried to ensure this was uninstalled and cannot see any remains from it.

Re-installed the sound anyway.

Along the way the PCI yellow question marks are now gone, yet still no sound other than internal speaker beeps. XP will NOT boot into normal mode, there is a flicker of a blue screen during latter stages of boot, but I have not been able to slow it enough to read it before it reboots to the Safe Mode choice screen. Is there a way to do this.

In Safe, if the system is left for any TIME it seems to slow itself down till it runs at a crawl or effectively stops.

Only system idle process is using processor resource.

On the F8 boot screen, there is an option to disable automatic restarting on BSOD, select that and you should be able to read the error on the BSOD.Did you install the MBoard drivers when you swapped the board out ? ?
Some components rely on the proper chipset drivers being installed to function properly...OK, the error message is one that seems not to appear in most lists, Ox07E.

I have loaded all the motherboard drivers and the sound drivers, etc. (more than once, in case)

I'm now wondering if there's a hangover of settings/active software from the old motherboard/sound card/graphics card still there affecting things, though can't find any.

Think I'm going to buy a new SATA drive and install drivers and XP to that from scratch.

Solve : added new hardware - now sounds like automotive fuel pump.?

In my already QUIET operating new build (running for 1 week now).

I now have a kinda whistling noise I best can describe as sounding like the high pitched sound of an electric fuel pump in the gas tank of a car.
I can't tell which device the noise is coming from but I did rule out the new cpu fan, new case fan, the 3 mainboard DDR2 RAM cooling fans and both 250mm factory case cooling fans. The 10,000 RPM Velociraptor hard drive has been quiet all week.
Any idea of what would be making this type of sound and is it anything to worry about?
SORRY for the 'sound diagnosis over the internet' thread. I just though this sound may be common and I just wander what it is.
Thanks,

I'd definately get a graphics card first in your position, although i'd be looking to set my sights a bit higher than 2600xt or a 3650 OTHERWISE you wont see much improvement in performance anyway... Perhaps a 3870?That processor fits the motherboard ; i checked the motherboard info , i think the 3870 is not for agp , anyway thxSave your money for a new machine...

What's the cart number? Some carts are not refillable.I dont see a gtx 260 running on a 400 watt power supplyQuote from: computeruler on April 10, 2009, 11:10:37 AM

What's this have to do with this thread?Anyway...

HP printers should have a program installed called an HP Toolbox, if I remember correctly.

Here you can specify the cartridges were replaced if you have re-filled them and then clean the print heads and print out a test page. I'm not sure of the actual process, but you should be able to do it from within that program.I new I posted that in the wrong thread but I wasnt quite shure... I have no idea how that happened. Just ignore meQuote from: GlitchPC on April 10, 2009, 11:25:41 AM

Did I miss SOMETHING here?

To be honest, John, refilling cartridges isn't worth the trouble or RISK. Too many times have I seen them not work or leak, causing damage to the printer and a fine mess. It's really BEST to stick to new cartridges, whether original Lexmark cartridges or generic but compatible ones. I know it's probably not the answer you're looking for, but it's the best option.Ohh and to answer your question.. sometimes theres a button on the printer you need to press to tell it you got more ink. Like you have to do when you get more paperSorry, I referred to HP...

Just check my signature and that will explain everything.

Anyway...the same MAY apply to a Lexmark printer. There may be a program that resets the cartridges.Quote from: computeruler on April 10, 2009, 02:38:10 PM

Solve : My laptop acer Aspire 5570 is not connect SD card (4G)?

Answer»

When i plug sd card(2G) in my laptop that is ok.But sd card (4G) is not connect. My laptop ASPIRE 5570 not recognized it.I updated driver for card reader. My OS is WINDOW xp.I reinstalled my OS. Please helps me.Thanks allDoes your 4GB card say SDHC on it? If so, it won't work on that model of Acer. That card reader won't read SDHC (Secure Digital High CAPACITY) cards. You will have to do one of two things in this case:

1. Get a 4GB SD card (not SDHC)
2. Get a SDHC USB card readerNo, it only say SD.it's Kingston.Help me please! Can U help me please!! I think quaxo is right. the 4GB SD card should be in SDHC form, which means your laptop cannot read. Either get a SDHC card reader or get another SD card. Actually, there were both SD and SDHC versions of the 4GB card.

Can u help me please!!

Have you tested this card in any other machines or devices? If not, it would be a start. At LEAST that way we can verify it isn't the card.In the past,my friend's 4G SD card pluged into my pc that was ok.I verified my sd card with other laptop, it's ok.I don't know what's happened with my laptop. That's difficult Quote from: quaxo on April 09, 2009, 10:34:51 PM
Actually, there were both SD and SDHC versions of the 4GB card.

Really? I have yet to see it.4GB SD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000070068%201053107930%201053313500&name=4GB

4GB SDHC:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2000070068%201053125651%201053313500&name=4GB

They do both exist. 4GB is the highest SD cards go before SDHC.

nhilanthan, if the card is working fine in other systems, either it is a SDHC card or there is a problem with your card reader. You can try uninstalling the card reader's driver and reinstalling it, but other than that I can't think of a reason it wouldn't read.

I'll take a look...1. Print this post out, since you won't have an access to it, at some point.

2. Download, and install Spybot (if you don't have it) from here: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

3. Close all windows, except for HJT.

4. Put a checkmark next to following HJT entries:

- R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = dynhost.inetcam.com;register.inetcam.com

- O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

- O20 - Winlogon Notify: arm32reg - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\arm32.dll (file missing)

5. Click on "Fix It" button.

6. Restart your computer in Safe Mode (F8)

7. Run Spybot (click on updates, first), and fix whatever it asks you to fix.

8. Open Windows Explorer. Go Tools>Folder Options, put a checkmark next to "Show hidden files, and folders".

9. Delete following files (if they still exist):

- lsass.exe from c:\windows\ folder (Do NOT confuse it with legit Micro$oft lsass.exe file located in c:\windows\system32 folder)

- arm32.dll from C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Settings\
folder

10. Turn off System Restore.

11. Restart in Normal Mode.

12. Turn System Restore on.

13. Run HJT again, and post back its log back here.

We'll have to, most likely, work little bit more, since you have "mywebsearch" presentDoing all that help a lot, it still freezes up but not nearly as much. Here is my hijack log after all of this.

Well, we have work to do...

0. Create Autoruns folder in your root C:\ directory.

1. Download and extract the Autoruns (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/Autoruns.mspx) program to C:\Autoruns

2. Reboot into Safe Mode.

3. Navigate to the C:\Autoruns folder you created in Step 0 and double-click on autoruns.exe.

4. When the program starts, click on the Options menu and enable the following options by clicking on them. This will place a checkmark next to each of these options.

1. Include empty locations

2. Verify Code Signatures

3. Hide Signed Microsoft Entries

5. Then press the F5 key on your keyboard to refresh the startups list using these new settings.

6. The program shows information about your startup entries in 16 different tabs.
For the most PART, the filename you are looking for will be found under the Logon or the Services tabs, but you should check all the other tabs to make sure they are not loading elsewhere as well.
Click on each tab and look through the list for the filename that you want to remove (you can use File>Find, or CTRL+F). The filename will be found under the Image Path column.
There may be more than one entry associated with the same file as it is common for malware to create multiple startup entries.
It is important to note that many malware programs disguise themselves by using the same filenames as valid Microsoft files.
It is therefore important to know exactly which file, and the folder they are in, that you want to remove.

You are looking for entries containing following file(s):
- arm32.dll
- any entry with: menusearch.html?p=zuzeb004YYUS, or part of it
- any entry containing: dynhost.inetcam.com,or register.inetcam.com

7. Once you find the entry that is associated with the malware, you want to delete that entry so it will not start again on the next reboot. To do that right click on the entry and select delete. This startup entry will now be removed from the Registry.

8. Now that we made it so it will not start on boot up, you should delete the file using My Computer or Windows Explorer (just use "Search). Make sure, that hidden files are shown (Windows Explorer >Tools>Folder Options>View tab, check "Show hidden files, and folders).

9. When you are finished removing the malware entries from the Registry and deleting the files, reboot into normal mode.

Report what you found, and post new HJT log.

Ok, i deleted the arm32.dll using autoruns. I could not find using window exploxer the file on my hard drive though. Here is my new hijack file

http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=zuzeb004YYUS
Right click on it. Click Delete.
If not found, please list all entries listed there.

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

Good luck

Ok were making headway, I was able to delete everything you had until I reached the 3rd HKEY part HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Internet Exployer\MenuExt, in the right pane, the only listed was AB(Default) Reg_52

Then on the Last HKEY I was able to delete the first one 4982D40A-C53B-4615-B15B-B5B5E98D167C, but under that on the left side is a Folder with the same name 4982D40A...... Dont know if that is suppose to be there so I left it for now.

Here is my Hijack log now

Thanks Let me check your HJT log, first...Yeah, we're making progress. With the latest steps, we eliminated half of bad entries.

Now...

Go back to Registry Editor in Safe Mode.

Navigate to:

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt
Right click on MenuExt folder, click Export. Save it to known location.
Right click on MenuExt folder, click Delete.

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions
Quote
but under that on the left side is a Folder with the same name 4982D40A......
Right click on that folder, click Export. Save it to known location.
Right click on that folder, click Delete.

Restart into Normal Mode.
Post new HJT log.Ok did all that here is my new HJT log

Solve : Unmountable boot volume error after new hard drive installation?

Answer»

OK..here it goes. I've been trying to install a new primary hard drive (WD 160GB IDE) and then install XP Pro. However, each time it boots to the install disc I get the blue SCREEN with the UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error. Most of the troubleshooting guides I've read in regards to this say to boot to the Recovery CONSOLE and run the check disc, however this is a brand new hard drive and I can't get to the Recovery console anyhow as it fails before that. In addition, this is the second drive I've tried so I doubt it's the drive. This is what I've done so far:

BTW..I have a Dell Dimension 8300

1. Per Dells suggestion, boot to XP with at least Service Pack 2. I tried XP with SP3 and that didn't work.
2. Per Western Digitals suggestion, boot using the XP reinstall disc....that didn't work.
3. Swapped old 80 conductor 40 pin IDE cable for new.......that didn't work.
4. Tried setting jumper to master and cable select......neither worked.
5. Update BIOS to latest version...AO7...that didn't work.

For what it's worth...at the bottom of the blue screen there is an error code as follows:
STOP:0x000000ED (0x89E34030, 0xc000010, 0x00000000)..........got this code after I booted to the reinstall disc
STOP:0x000000ED (0x89E3B8C0, 0xc000010, 0x00000000)....got this code after I swapped the cable

Any other ideas?Go back to an 80 pin cable.
DLoad the bootable version of the DATA Lifeguard Tools from their site and use them to prepare the drive for a new installation...I appreciate your reply, however I'm using a new 80 conductor/40 pin wire....this is the type that is required...see below.

In the ATA/ATAPI-4 standard that introduced the Ultra DMA transfer mode set, a new cable was introduced to replace the old STANDBY: the 80-conductor IDE/ATA cable. The name is important: the new cable has 80 conductors (wires)--it does not have 80 pins on each connector, though, just 40. This means that the new cable is pin-compatible with the old drive. No change has been made to the IDE/ATA connectors, aside from the color-coding issue (see below).

In addition, I tried to boot to the Data Lifeguard Tools disk provided with the hd...but that didn't work. That said, WD said I did not need to use the Data Lifeguard Tools if booting to an OS.

thanks

Well you can take WD's advice or follow ours to get this to work....
Barring that i would return the drive for a replacement.OK.....so I tried your suggestion, and unfortunately that did not work either....same error. This is the second drive I have tried......

thanks

The kernel mode I/O subsystem attempted to mount the boot volume and it failed. This error also might occur during an upgrade to Win XP on systems that use higher throughput ATA disks or CONTROLLERS with incorrect cabling. In some cases, your system might appear to work normally after you restart.

Try a brand new cable...

Solve : Hardware Shut Down?

Answer»

When the system is TURNED on, the fans start up but then then system powers down almost immediately. The PC was WORKING fine and no new hardware has been added. Any suggestions?Do you see anything on the screen at all when you turn it on? This could be a number of things. FIRST that comes to mind is the power supply. Do you know enough about computers to swap the power supply out with another? You said you added new hardware, right? try taking out the newly installed hardware and see if it works again. How old is this computer? Have you tried cleaning it out using compressed air...or replacing the CMOS battery?I BUILT this PC six YEARS ago and have not added any new hardware since. When I power it up, it shuts down before anything shows on the screen and there are no coded beeps from the Bios. I have cleaned it but not thoroughly. I'll give that a try as well as swapping out the power supply. Thank you for the suggestions.

Solve : Motherboard/wireless card incompatable??

Answer»

I've been using a usb wireless adapter for the past 2.5 years on my computer. I broke it recently (long story, but definitely broke) and decided to go with an internal card. So, I purchased this one from newegg:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315041
EDIMAX EW-7128G IEEE 802.11b/g PCI Wireless Card

The motherboard I have is
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131142
ASUS P5N-E SLI LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard

I'm not dumb with COMPUTERS, but I'm definitely not fluent. I'm learning as I go along, but it was a home built computer. Anyway, it appears that the card doesn't fit into the slot I thought it should fit into. I have a huge video card so I'm not sure if that's covering something up, but from what I've read the PCI express slots aren't compatible with most of these wireless cards. I can't tell exactly what's going on, but it appears that may be my problem. I was trying to put the card into the TWO WHITE slots at the very bottom. Is there another place I should be looking? Am I just being stupid and it should fit somewhere? It looked like the motherboard had normal and express PCI slots, but I thought maybe the video card was covering one up or something.

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Thanks!
a PCI card goes in a PCI slot.

the white slots sound like PCI slots. how are they not fitting?Just looked at the pictures of your board. That card (which is PCI) should fit into one of those two PCI (white) slots. Not exactly sure what you're doing wrong. Can you explain why you can't fit it there?Yep. There are 3 "sections" on the card where it connects into the slot. There is a little section, a larger section and then another small section. The slot has a large section and then a small section. I have this feeling with computers that if it doesn't fit don't force it into place. When I try to put the card into the slot, it just doesn't go in. I don't know if I pushed it VERY hard if it would go in there, but I think that's a bad idea. It should just slide in from what I know. I have a feeling it's the type of PCI slot/card but I'm not sure I understand all of how they're different, what kinds I'm dealing with.Ah, I see what you mean. Some PCI cards have this and some don't. No need to worry, it does go into that PCI slot though. My old PCI soundcard was like that as well.

As for your trouble getting it in, sometimes you do have to apply a bit of pressure to get it to slip into the slot right, they can be quite tight fitting.Great THANK you. Good to know I'm not just nuts. I guess it's not so bad when things don't work right AWAY, because you learn a little more each time. I've had a few things break recently, well, mostly just my power supply, and I learned all about how to test it and get it back to working properly, and I guess this is just one more step in the journey. Thanks for your help, I'll let you know if I get it in.

Solve : Adding 2nd HD (RAID 0) using existing HD.?

Answer»

My new build has been up and running GREAT for about a week, but now I'm going to add another WD Velociraptor 150GB drive and set up a 'RAID 0' ARRAY using the primary "system
" hard drive I already have (WD Velociraptor 150GB) and the new one. I also ordered Vista 64 bit OS and 4GB more of the same memory. Is there going to be a problem using the 'used' HD I have now when I configure the RAID '0' array because of the data already on the drive? Is there a proceedure I need to use to wipe the present DISC CLEAN. Keep in mind my present 32 bit OS is on the Velociraptor "system" drive, not the 1TB Barracuda Drive.

Thanks,
Mike

Solve : Gradual death of my CD rom & DVD?

Answer»

Hi Folks
Newbie reporting in for some advice. My knowledge of computers can be written on the back of a postage stamp using a thick felt tip pen_ hopefully that gives you some idea of my PC abiliities

My PC is fairly old but runs on XP Windows. It is fitted with a separate CD rom and a DVD player. Over the past 2 YEARS, the PC has gradually stopped playing DVDs and has now packed in playing CDs. The lights are on, but nothing happens.....

I have replaced the IDE cable, but that has had zero effect. I am now considering buying a new DVD rewriter, but I have a sinking feeling that this will not solve my problems, as I find it hard to believe that both the DVD and the CD would both pack in at virtually the same time.

I have uninstalled both lots of hardware and checked the drivers and uninstalled & reinstalled etc, all to no AVAIL.

I have considered resetting the PC, but I don't really want to do this except as a final resort.

So.....before I reset/ chuck the whole lot in the bin and buy another 'tower' system, can anyone suggest anything else I could try which might fix it?

CheersIf the steps listed below won't HELP, the drives are most likely dead.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.Broni

Many thanks for your excellent TIPS and advice. I have finally worked through all the options, but unfortunately my PC still refuses to play. So, I'm off now to bury it and consider my next option......... Brand new dual-layer DVD burners are about 40 Bucks shipped from newegg...
Install time :10-15 MINUTES....
Tools needed: Phillips screwdriver.patio even offers free on-site installation

But anyways here's stream processing in a few words :-

A normal CPU is made up of multiple cores which can process different functions at the same time. For example you can run a compiler on one core and an encoder on another. These cores are very complex and process these functions at a very fast rate. Applications that can do several functions or threads at the same time can benefit greatly from this. Also these processors can perform a single function at an extremely fast rate. There are 4 and 2 cores in modern CPU's

Now stream processors perform a single thread at a very slow rate, I can't find data on how slow but it should be around 1/10 th of the speed of the CPU in a normal GPU. Anyways in Larrabee it is 1/2 the speed of a core 2 at the same clock frequency. But
GPU's contain hundred of these very simple processors which can make overall computation very high. HOWEVER, different functions cannot be performed in at the same time in these stream processors. The same function can run on a very large SET of data in these thingies. For example you can't run a compiler and an encoder at the same time but you can encode a large number of files at the same time. Of course you can also encode two files in two separate cores in a desktop processors, but overall it will be much slower than in a GPU. This type of parallelism is called SIMD (Single Instruction Multiple Data). Think of things that can benefit by doing the same thing on different sets of data. For example we have 3d rendering. You can use the same function to render 1000 frames in different cores.

The raw computational power of modern GPU's is 20x, i.e they can process about 1 teraflop while CPU's max do 50 Gigaflops. But this doesn't mean that there would be a 20x improvement in all tasks. For example, Nvidia and AMD launched Avivo and Badaboom media encoders and these provided about 4x the speed of a CPU. With better drivers and and opencl we can expect a 10x improvemet in a lot of things like rendering and then there's larrabee too.

No, bananas what else would I mean?

In that case, it might be because ATI is based in Canada, and we don't have a good climate for banana growing. Also, the soil has too much clay for the rhizome to take root of a banana plant. Not good conditions. As such any number of bananas ATI had (for whatever reason) would be subject to import fee's and levy's- so it really wouldn't be cost effective to try to remain competitive with their number of bananas.

Solve : Zune can't play my CDs?

Answer»

Getting an error code: C00D11D2 (90070005).

Windows Vista, Samsung DVD player, lots of computer memory and speed.

When I inset a CD, Zune opens and lists the tracks. When I DOUBLE click the first track to start play, Zune RUNS through all the tracks and then displays the error code. It's telling me it can't access the file. It might be in use. When I click on web help, it just refers to allowing Zune access through my firewall. Doing that makes no DIFFERENCE -- I still get the same PROCESS and the same error message.

Used to work fine. This has started lately. Device manager lists the DVD player as TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D ATA Device and says, in the general tab, that "this device is working properly.

Any help, anyone, please?

Solve : mouse pointer?

Answer»

Quote from: Towergazer on April 10, 2009, 03:23:28 AM

I'd like to get in on this thread. I have been using a Logitech Trackerball but suddenly the pointer would begin to take off and slide away from left to right across my monitor. If I dragged it back, it would just keep repeating that action. It occurred PRIMARILY at booting up. If I rebooted, it would behave for some time - anything between 15 minutes to an hour - then would slide away again.
I then switched to a basic MS Intellimouse but the same process occurs, although it appears to be marginally more stable. I haven't installed any driver. It looked after itself on installation.
Any suggestions? It's driving me mad as well.
Happy Easter, folks.
What surface are you operating the mice on? (eg. WOOD, plastic etc etc)Quote

You should start your own thread.

Short answer to all of this. My brother and I have been using computers for years. We have never found any mouse or keyboard of any kind that performs as well, over the long haul, as the standard keyboard and mouse. OK. Exception for the optical moue. That's good. Anything else gives trouble sooner or later.and trackpoint for laptops. Those are great.Bit more from me. Thanks for your responses. When the Logitec Trackerball began giving trouble, the makers were good enough to send me a new replacement one. This began to wander as soon as I began to use it. I tried both the usual USB port and the PS2 (P2S?) connections but to no avail. My point being that it wasn't an old mouse/ball that was causing the problem.
I use a mousemat with the current one month old MS Intellimouse.
Still got the problem. But do you have the problem with a standard mouse?
NOTICE. Never unpin/plug the PS/2 mouse with power on. It damages weaknesses the electronics inside the mouse. It wlll right away, or become weak and fail later.

Wheel Mouse picture below. Cost about $1.50 each, will last for 3 to 6 months in normal use. Or don't jerk them around and the can last a lot longer.

2 Pages on a mouse issue......nevermind.BC.....Thank You!! I found my connect button on the bottom of my keyboard. Never knew it was there. After trying the things from the help offered on this forum, the pointer seems to have gotten somewhat better but occasionally still just shoots off into computer land SOMEWHERE....still don't know what's causing it...I really don't want to replace my keyboard if at all possible since it also has the buttons for controlling my recording and play, pause and other things I need. I was wondering if I could continue to use my wireless keyboard, but use a wired mouse? Thanking you in advance for all your help... Quote

Couple days ago my cousin was messing with my bios SETTINGS. And somehow MESSED it up. Everytime you restarted the COMPUTER you would get this diskette drive 0 seek failure. so we just left it as is. Until our web browsers STARTED crashing every 5 minutes. I thought it was just mozilla so i tried opera but i couldnt install it due to it being corrupt.

So i rebooted/reformatted my computer During the copy phaise some files couldnt be copied correctly so i had to skip the files. After windows was installed i tried to install my old programs like aim and mozilla. etc etc but i couldnt because an error message would POP up saying "file is corrupt". So i once again reformatted my computer this time after the "to install a fresh copy of windows xp press enter thing" it would give me a NFTS.sys crash. i tried to reboot again and it worked but still the copy phaise some files i had to skip. Now sometimes on reboot it would give me that NFTS.sys error. and still some programs wont install correctly. does anyone know whats wrong with my computer?!?!?!

Solve : Graphics Tablet acting bizzarely... any ideas??

Answer»

I'm using a LaPazz graphics tablet on my vista... it's always worked absolutely fine, no problem.... today is different.
It doesn't want to recognise the pen...
well, it knows it's there, because when i tap it, the little LED light flashes to say it knows it's there, but it won't move the curser around the screen. I put a new battery in a couple of days ago so i know it's not that. fair enough - it must be broken.

but it's not.
If i open the graphics tablet control panel, and click the 'pressure' tab, the tablet suddenly springs to life and i can use it anywhere... the second i close that little window down, it stops working again...

i've restarted the compter 3 times now, and it's the same story.

W... t... F?!?!?!?!

ANY ideas what's wrong with it???Try replacing the battery in your pen (if applicable) and/or reinstall your tablet driver/software using its CD.battery is brand new and i've uninstalled and re-installed all the software and checked that the drivers etc are all up to DATE and it's still the same story - my dad's FRIEND who is our REGULAR computer chap has no idea what's wrong with it either - he thinks it may be some kind of driver conflict or something? but isn't sure what to do about it and i know absolutely nothing about drivers myself. The status says it's working NORMALLY, but it clearly isn't... this is very weird! thanks for trying though! i'm open to all ideas - i'm an artist and photographer, so my tablet is very useful to me!

i've googled around and found another person who had a smiliar problem to me, but he was on a mac and apparently, according to my tech guy, that solution won't apply to my vista... so it's a bit of a mystery!

thanks! What was the Mac solution? Do you know?

What is your graphic tablet's model number?yep - it's here:
http://www.justintheloop.com/technology/the-lapazz-graphic-tablet-wp8060-tab08-on-os-x/

the model is the same one i thinkIt seems like the driver software doesn't start automatically.

Try starting it manually.i'm GOING to sound dumb now, but how do i do that? i'm not too familiar with drivers - i know what they're for, but i've never really meddled with them other than reinstalling them or updating themNot the drive, the software. It should be either in the Start Menu, or you can go looking through your Program Files.
I don't know what it's called, but it's just like another program.

Solve : device manager/ exclamation mark?

Answer»

Hello
In DEVICE manager under "sound, video, and game controllers"
I have two "standard game ports" listed

one off them has a yellow EXCLAMATION mark on it and is enabled
the other one is also enabled.

The one with the exclamation mark on it also says "this device cannot find enough free resources that it can use, if you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

and on the resources tab in the "conflicting device list"
states input/output range 0201-0201 not available

To be honest i do not know, i do not play any games.
can you use them for sound, as in to play sound out of speakers.

My computer was getting fixed the other day, and while he was fixing it , he noticed it had two sound cards in, so he took one out, and gave it back to me.

So when i had connected all the leads and TURNED the computer on, all was fine until i connected the speakers, i COULD not get any sound from anywhere.

So i put the other sound card back in and hey speakers are working.
So i think , if this is right, its the onboard computer sound card that i carn't get any sound from.

This other sound card just fits into a spare slot.

But on the other hand has this got anything to do with it at all
i will post back , after disableing the one that has the exclamation mark on it.

But just to make sure is it safe to do this,
As i haven't a clue about thisRight click one of them at a time and select Uninstall/Remove...
Reboot and see what happens...
If no joy/joy reinstall your sound card drivers...Quote from: patio on April 11, 2009, 03:10:25 PM

Hello i have done what you mentioned, but this makes no difference, it will ask you to restart the computer, for the changes to take affect, and when you do this its the same as it was.

I tryed to disable it, but that just brings up a red x telling you its disabled.

as i say if this is doing know harm, can i leave it as it is

I'm sure it's causing no harm...missing or incorrect drivers won't harm anything.
If you are real curious DLoad Everest Home and install it and run a report...it may give you more clues about the missing device.Quote

Looking over your answer again, i realised what i had done.
I was uninstalling one then rebooting the computer.

And then doing the same with the other one, then rebooting the computer.

As you said, uninstall one, then the other, and then restart the computer

That did work this time.

Thankyou for your help patio Excellent...nice work !

Solve : dvd volume?

Answer»

My DVD play movies, but EVEN when the VOLUME is set at 100%, I can't hear the voices. What are you using SPEAKERS or headphones? Be sure that they are connected properly to your SOUND card.Make sure your sound output options match your speaker setup. On 5.1 output from a DVD, the voice is typically put out through the center channel only. If you output 5.1 audio to say 4.1 or two speaker setups, there is no center speaker and the voices will be lost, but most of the other sounds will be heard fine. This is can be fixed by changing various settings, depending where exactly the problem lies (DVD player settings or sound card settings).

Can you give more info? What program are you using to play your DVDs? What sound card do you have? What is your speaker setup? If you still have problems it could just be the recording/copy...?

Does this occur with all DVDs?

If so, you could try VLC Media Player as you can turn up the volume to more than 100%. You can download it from here:
