Solve : Too hot.?

Answer»

Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 22, 2009, 02:33:46 PM

There are many references to the use of thermal materials.
Here is just one that considers use of a thermal pad or else thermal grease.
http://www.heatsink-guide.com/compound.htm

"You should apply a very thin (paper thin) layer on the heatsink with your finger before installing it. Don't use too much - the thinner the layer, the better. But make sure that the entire contact area between CPU and heatsink is covered; otherwise hot-spots can form."

Exactly, to the letter what I did.I use an old fashion Silicone grease formulated for high power audio OUTPUT transistors.

I know it says: "...apply a very thin (paper thin) layer...", but I think that's very misleading. Just put a dab on the cpu and smear it around. This is not rocket science!

He even says: "...In no case, a thermal pad and thermal compound should be used together...", but makes no point as to why. That's because it's just not true and he can't back it up.

It's your computer, you do what you WANT with it.Quote from: notme on October 22, 2009, 02:55:38 PM

I in fact used a glove as there was a warning on the packet: "touching this with your skin will cause instant death" or similar but those instructions look good and I will follow those when the paste arrives.Quote

Memory of an Elephant...... I never spread the paste at all... just a little dollop in the center of the CPU. Heatsink spreads it around for me, which I believe is the idea. As long as you put the heatsink straight down rather then at a angle, in which case the paste might become unevenly applied.

Finally my NEW paste arrived so I followed the instructions on artic silver and now it is not GOING over 40C any time and usually floats around 25C-30C on all CORES. Thanks for all the help - fixed!I guess paper-thin is too thin?

Solve : speed fan?

Answer»

When onboard video, there is no GPU, the CPU serves as the GPU and the system memory is shared, a portion is set aside for the video's exclusive use. There is some power reduction because the CPU is not working as hard, but not enough offset a dedicated GPU. BTW, modern GPU's are more powerful than CPU's of just a few years ago.Thanks. That's something I've always wondered about.Onboard still has a graphics controller, somethimes integrated into the chipset (chipsets used to be "sets of chips", i.e. more than one), it's just not doing the heavy processsing. HENCE, the continuing confusion and interchangeability of terms: graphics controller, graphics processor (or graphics processing unit), graphics memory, video controller, video memory, shared memory. As cpu's and memory and chipsets have become faster and cheaper and way more plentiful, onboard memory is not so bad. For the same reasons, separate video cards will always be better. Just Google "Moore's Law".It would seem that you were right all along, computer_commando... I do need a graphics card.

Although setting my memory speed to match my bus speed helped with hulu videos, I realized I was having the same problems with some other video websites, in which this solution doesn't help. I disabled the Aero interface (set it to "Classical") and the problem went AWAY. I can only conclude that the onboard graphics system cannot handle the Aero interface AND full screen videos at the same TIME...

So I either need to leave Aero disabled, or get a graphics card. MAY as well get a card, there ARE some video games I'd like to try and the onboard graphics just doesn't seem to cut it..

EDIT: I suppose it's possible that using ram of equal capacity, enabling dual channel mode may help...........my ram is currently running in single channel mode because the ram sticks are not equal in size.. You need to find a low power card like this, so you don't have to replace the psu:

Solve : can i run a desktop /tower unit on its side? (i have limited space )?

Answer»

I have an old IBM tower that would fit nicely on a shelf on its side. (it has decent ventilation)
will the harddrive perform NORMALLY (and last a normal life?)

thxWelcome to CH,

Some information is available here The old school of THOUGHT is that if you reorient the hd you should reformat it in its new position. While there is no reason not to turn the box on its side, be prepared for possible disc read errors. If that occurs, FORMAT the drive and reinstall the OS while the system is on its side.I never had a problem CHANGING how the machine sat without a format.

The only problem I had was putting CD into the player. I had to hold them in place and close the tray at the same time.

Hello, Sorry if this post TWICE but I SEE 4 screens within one.
I have updated the BIOS and formatted and re-installed XP Home
Nothing seem to make a difference. When I plug in an EXTERNAL monitor it is fine but on the LCD it is still 4 screens . Attached is a poor quality picture but you will get the idea.

None, it is a fresh install of XP Home with the drive reformatted.
It doesn't happen all the time but more often than not these days.

Solve : Geforce G100 vs 7800GT?

Answer»

Hi,

a friend of mine bougth a new pc with a Feforce G100 BUILD in. I still have an OLD Geforce 7800GT with modified cooler lying around. Which off these TWO is the better videocard? The G100 because the G100 is DX10 while the 7800GT is a DirectX 9.
The G100 is better because:
DirectX 10
Low Profile
Works better with modern games.I know of the DirectX VERSION. But what of the raw power off the cards? The Geforce G 100 is an renamed 9400GS. Does the 7800GT not have more computing power?

Solve : Will not boot?

Answer»

Intel Core2Duo 3.16
8 GB OCZ RAM (x4 2GB module)
Windows XP 64
Gigabyte MB model# GA-EP45-UD3R
PSU- Zalman 600W (ZM500-HP)
PCI-E Ge Force 9600GT

Symptoms: When I turn on the COMPUTER: the case lights/fans come on, MB led's come on, I can hear the HDD's spool up, and the fans on the PSU and GPU turn on. The monitor acts as if no SIGNAL were being sent because it never turns on. (yes it's plugged in). Front HDD indicator light COMES on and stays on, seems as if it never goes to POST tests.

I have tried several different memory configurations ( 1,2,4 sticks in varying slots). I've removed all drives with the exception of the HD the OS is located on. I pulled the processor and reseated it and heatsink with fresh paste. I have pulled the video card several times and see no obvious damage. I've double and triple checked connectors to MB and PSU.

I can't guess what HAPPENED. It was working one night and shut down normally. The next morning I got the symptoms described above. I would really appreciate some thoughts or ideas that don't involve buying replacement components. I'm a poor college student. Sounds like you need a new video card.Try the display on another computer (or a different display on this computer) just to rule out a bad display.I tried the monitor on another computer and it seems to function normally.

Then it sounds like the previous poster got it RIGHT - try a new video card.Ok thanks, I'll try to dig up a replacement video card. I should be able to post the results of that in a few days.

Solve : Trouble booting computer?

Answer»

Quote from: Kozok on October 26, 2009, 09:21:47 AM

1. Could reformating possibly fix this?
2. Also, I just checked My Computer and it shows there is a 2nd cd-drive along with the dvd drive (which for some reason is being called a cd-drive), and the cd-drive. D is the dvd E is the cd and F is the drive that shouldn't be there.
3. I believe I forgot to mention that sometimes it crashes for no apparent reason, sometimes during loading and sometimes just while running around on a game. When it crashes it does this screeching sound through my headphones/speakers, if that MEANS anything.
1. No. Reformatting will not fix a hardware problem.
2. This indicates to me, that the IDE bus is being "corrupted" by a bad device. Remember, you said: "...cylinder light on the left of my power button that lights up red..." That light indicates IDE bus activity and is only solid-red during BIOS detection. It flashes the rest of the time.
3. Once one things goes bad, everything goes bad.So basically my computer is screwed, and I should just get a new one?I thought you were here because you want to repair it.A failing/weak PSU will cause other components in the machine to strain and run HOTTER than normal...I am here to fix it but I thought that if the IDE bus is corrupted then I'd be better off buying a new computer, unless there is a way to fix that then I am all ears. I'll try a new PSU.Corrupted doesn't mean damaged. It means the data (1's and 0's) gets mixed up, so it freezes. Hit the reset button or power down and up and it starts from scratch like nothing happened. This is all under the ASSUMPTION the IDE bus has failed...
Try what's been suggested first.Well, I put the PSU in and now it wont boot normal or in safe mode. Any ideas?Looking more like the hard drive is bad. I assume the new psu is connected properly, all FANS are running and you can feel the hard drive spinning or hear it spinning. You can download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic software to test the HDD. You want the FDD bootable version since you still have an FDD. Who makes the HDD?Hmm, well after turning the computer off and starting it again, and try it about 50 times it looks like the computer finally started to work properly again. Thanks for the help.

Solve : Problems with overheating (Possibly)?

Answer»

I've had my computer for about a year and a half now, and it's always WORKED pretty well. Unfortunately, lately it's been acting up. If I do any heavy loading with my computer, it crashes - that is, the screen turns BLACK. It might be my video card overheating, as I usually can hear audio for a little while after the crash.

Running WINDOWS Vista on a Toshiba Qosmio x305, 64 bit OS, NVIDIA GeForce 9700M GTS, duo Intel Core processors (P7350 @ 2.00 GHZ)
Been using Kaspersky Internet Security as my sole protection. My friend suggested I clean out the fans, but after unscrewing all the screws, I still couldn't get to the fans.

Any suggestions ( I did order a notebook cooler )Here are manuals and instructions for Toshiba laptops, with instructions to access your fans for cleaning.

Follow ESD precautions at all times.

Solve : memory upgrade?

Answer»

Hi i have 1gb of memory i WANT to put in another 1gb mine is ddr2 400ghz 184 pin.i have been told all ddr2 is 184pin but i have been on lots of sites and the majority of ddr2 is 200/240 pins.is this pin number critical. i can't put anything other than 184 pin in my computer.can somebody please help.If your motherboard can only accept memory with 184 pins, then you are CURRENTLY using DDR, not DDR2. You cannot install ddr2 memory onto a motherboard designed to accept ddr memory. The RAM sockets are different so ddr2 will not fit into sockets designed for ddr memory.

What is the make/model of your computer?

Visit crucial.com or kingston.com or newegg.com and use their memory configurator. If they have your computer model in their DATABASE, their memory configurator will tell you what memory you can buy for your computer. Thanks Eeviac/Soybean CHECKED with crucial you are right i am using ddr not ddr2.

Solve : How to format IDE drive to FAT ???

Answer»

I have an old 40GB IDE drive that is formatted NTFS. I would like to wipe it clean, create two partitions and format it to FAT, not FAT32. I am USING XP and can not find any option other than NTSC to reformat. I have read XP will not format any thing over 32 GB?? into anything other than NTSC but that it can still be done. Any HELP would be APPRECIATED.

Thanks
ChrisIf it's over 32G it will not show FAT as an option...
You will need to remove all partitions...create one under that size and select FAT...
Actually FAT not FAT32 may be limited to 8G...NTFS vs FATI understand the BENEFITS of NTFS but I need FAT for a specific application. I am going to replace a disc on chip flash module in a STB with this hard drive. The STB is linux based and utilizes FAT. I was hoping for just two partitions one small ( a G or less ) to install the initial boot flash and the remainder close to 40 to be able to record HD programing to. OK. I think I understand what you are doing. But do you think the software in in the *STB does more that 4GB? I mean, if there is more space available, with the software let you use it? Are you going to modify the Linux application inside the STB?

*STB means Set Tip Box, a converter needed to receive HDTV programs. Some have provision for recording a program.I gotcha. I always use Partition Magic for that kind of stuff.
However, FAT (FAT16) is limited to 2GB for most OS, 4GB for some OS. No way to get 30+GB as FAT16. Use Windows to partition to 2GB & 38GB and you should get the option for FAT on the 2GB partition. So far I do know that the STB will recognize the drive once it is formatted PROPERLY. I can then install the boot flash via usb. The STB automatically defaults this to the smaller partition. The recording capabilities on the larger partition are going to be trial and error.
Thanks for the info on my format options. I will give it a go tonight.

Solve : need a help with my external hard drive !!!!?

Answer»

I did it. you are hero!!!That was fast! Next order of business: BACKUP
I keep triple backups: internal hard drive, external hard drive, flash memory
I also do image backups of Boot drive, and keep rotating backups of them.
No system restore is necessary, boot drive can be re-imaged in 15min vs reinstall of Windows & programs in hours.

new challenge

After recovering all files, if I define the TWO ext hard drives as RAID 5, then this implies that every time I copy a file into one disk will be backed-up automatically. right? Are you abandoning the Comstar enclosure?
You are using this for data only?
Do you need more than 500GB?
Do you want both drives running all the time when the computer is on?

My experience is with RAID-1, only. I used it as the boot drives for a few months until I OBTAINED a different computer which didn't have that capability. One drive started failing and was automatically being rebuilt every couple DAYS. Didn't slow things down that much because RAID controller did all the work.

RAID-5 seems fine, but I believe RAID-1+0 would be good, too. Just don't USE RAID-0.

Solve : External Monitor with Laptop No longer Displaying?

Answer»

I have my Dell Inspiron e1505 laptop connected to my Dell SEW198WFP monitor. Previously, it worked without any problems. Now while still using a VGA cable, the display seems to recognize it is connected to my laptop but no picture either extends when using the monitor as a secondary display or as the primary display. I have not added any additional software or changed any configurations as far as I know to possibly cause the monitor to no longer work. I tried updating both the monitor and video card drivers but neither of these provided a solution.

My system:
Windows Vista Business SP2
Dell Inspiron e1505
2GB RAM
Display Intel 945 Express Chipset

How can you tell?I can move OPEN windows to the external monitor but the screen stays black. Normally, without my external connected, my mouse is bound to the confines of my laptop screen. Also, I can choose the monitor in my display properties when it's connected and can't when it is not. Thanks for the clarification. The external monitor WORKS but the Windows desktop does not extend onto it. Right-click Desktop, select Properties, select Desktop tab or Settings tab. Should be items there to do what you want.I've already gone through all of this. Both the built in windows graphic properties and the graphic card properties do not solve the issue. I've used the exact same set up within the last couple weeks and it has worked just FINE. Now for some reason, external monitors no longer work either as a display clone or an extended desktop.Quote from: duck4life on October 25, 2009, 06:14:10 PM

This is ODD. Do you have some kind of graphic on the desktop? If you change background to None and Windows theme to Standard, the 2nd monitor should at least be blue, and not black. If it stays black, could be bad connection at laptop VGA CONNECTOR.

Solve : Internal USB hubs on laptops !!!?

Answer»

I have a Toshiba laptop Satellite L505D-S6952, while hooking up and TRYING to run my Audio interface with my DJ program I kept getting background noise, which I have discovered was partly DUE to my mouse plugged into another usb port, after disconnecting the mouse most of the noise went away, but some still remained. After talking to the tech at the support department I was told that I probably have IRQ conflicts within the laptop. I was also told that the usb's probably share an internal hub.
I am going to purchase a new laptop but need to find out if any of the usb ports are independent of each other.
Does anyone know how to tell if certain usb ports are independent of other ones??

1. IRQ conflicts will not cause noise.
2. They probably do.
3. Not before you buy it. I think you're barking up the wrong tree. It could be the mouse wire was serving as an antenna. TRY the mouse in a different USB port or a different mouse or a wireless mouse.

Solve : My camera (kodak easyshare)won't connect to the computer??

Answer»

Okay so I have a kodak easyshare m1093IS and basically, when I plug it through the usb cable, nothing pops up and the power button flashes its blue lights. I BELIEVE it's suppose to be black ? Not too sure.. and so I removed the memory chip thingy and plugged it straight into the comp but nothing popped up. YES i HAVE installed the software that came along with it but it's not detecting a connection.

Once the connection was established and the pop up came up asking what software you would like to use to open the hardware and there was NO software to select from even THOUGH I already installed the software

Please do help me out, Thanks!Quote from: frank0478 on October 14, 2009, 04:35:45 PM

.. and so I removed the memory chip thingy and plugged it straight into the comp but nothing popped up
Open My Computer, it will be under one of the drives listed. Don't know why software is not working. Post back with you computer make and model number, along with Operating System and version/update.i don't think it's the software, k I got it to connect, but there is no way for me to access it

You know when you plug something in and it gives you a bunch of software for you to open that hardware? there is absolutely NOTHING for the camera

and i'm using xp .. if it matters i got the version 8 of that software So are you saying it doesn't show in My Computer ? ?
It will have a drive LETTER and be listed as a mass storage device...

If not try Windows Explorer....

PS> The EasyShare software is junk...avoid it if you can...so yeah I uninstalled the easyshare thing since it's crap.... and yes it does not show in my computerRight clik My Computer and select Manage...then Disk Management...does it show there ? ?
If so RIGHT clik it and select Properties and report your findings...k So i did what you said

weird thing is when I hold the flashing PWR botton, it connects but as soon as I let go it disconnects

WHILE HOLDING i was able to get this from the property

"No drivers are installed for this device.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter."

After I let go I got:
"Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)

To fix this PROBLEM, reconnect this hardware device to the computer.

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device."Unplug the camera and re-boot.
Go to Control Panel/Add/Remove programs and un-install the Kodak software and re-boot
Go back to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manger and see if the camera is listed...if it is right clik it and select Remove/Uninstall...re-boot.

Power down.
Plug the camera in and power up...Windows will now recognise it as a mass storage device and you should be good to go.

Let us know...i've uninstalled the kodak software LONG time ago HOWEVER!

I did not try removing the drive so I definitely will try that soon and let you know
k so I uninstalled the drive which only took seconds, then replugged the usb in..... it said new drive has an issue installing ? then exact same PROBLEM happens as I previously described above... any other tricks in your pocket?Driver Link...why did you link me? I've been to the site.. how they have is the software No...they also have just the Driver...software isn't neccessary...where?

Solve : Please reccommend me a gaming/desktop replacement laptop!?

Answer»

Hi, guys.

I bought an Acer from Wal-mart two or three years ago and replaced everything in it but the motherboard (give or take). This was a mistake, in retrospect; the computer seems to finally be giving up the ghost and doing all kinds of weird stuff.

I want to buy a laptop eventually, and I really need some advice on what to GET. I'm looking for something that will run games as well as my old DESKTOP, preferably better. But, rather than listing my desktop specs, I'll tell you what improved specs I'm looking for in a laptop.

Dual-core or Quad-core processor (probably Intel)
260M or similar nVidia graphics
6GB RAM
Windows 7
600GB HDD @7200 RPM or better
Wireless N
Card reader
8-cell battery or better (but not necessary, I'll be plugged in most of the time)
WEBCAM would be nice (but not necessary)
DVD R/W (don't need/want Blu-ray)
Costs less than $1400
No sales tax/shipping
Must be reliable!!! No more money down the toilet

I don't need a big display (1440x900 is fine, SMALLER might even be okay).

Right now I'm kind of hoping that my desktop holds out, but it's also just plain big and bulky. As far as the price, Best Buy had an ASUS G72Gx with similar specs to the above for $1299. I almost ordered it, but I hated to pay sales tax ($100) and shipping ($15). I also worried that a quad core processor might generate too much heat, but I really don't know. (You'd think ASUS would test it out and verify that it would not over heat, so maybe it's silly of me to worry about that.)

I feel a little overwhelmed and discouraged. I don't like spending so much money, but what can I do? I want the power (or better) of my junky old desktop, but I don't want to deal with my ailing unit, or any bulky desktop at all.

Sometimes I think I should just be satisfied with my little netbook for computing and do my gaming on my consoles instead, but I want to play this pile of games I already have and other PC-exclusive weird stuff that comes out in the FUTURE. I also want to be able to record my music on something, and my 2005 laptop doesn't really cut it.

That Best Buy one for $1299 would be great if not for sales tax.

Ugh... But I hate spending this much money unless it's on a guitar.

Can you guys help me? Please please please?

Also, what's an eSATA port, and how do I hook an external HDD to it? My external HDD just uses USB. (I'm asking because this computer I was looking at has an eSATA.)

Solve : Help me! Issues with Printer not being recognised?

Answer»

Hi,
I RECENTLY bought an EPson SX200 printer to install on a computer running Windows XP. WHen it came to installation, I went by the book and followed every step. All fine, until it comes to actually connecting the printer to the computer. It then comes up with device not recognised. I followed all the troubleshooting tips, tried various USB cables etc, but STILL to no avail.

Took it back to shop, who suggested that it could be that the installation cd was for vista, whilst my computer was XP. SUggested downloading printer DRIVERS from website.

I then spoke to an EPson technical person USING their online chat, told them what they had said. He gave me the link for the drivers page, said try it but it's unlikely to work, he thought it was probably something to do with:
"You could try uninstalling and reinstalling from the following page however in my experience this is caused by missing system software that is require for a USB 2.0 MFP device like this"

I attempted the driver install but it still didn't work so I took the printer back, they didn't have another so I bought a more expensive printer SX515 I think, tried to install this one and again came up against the same problem.

Does any one know what I can do to fix this, I can't take the new printer back again and I really need a printer!!

Thanks in advance
Bunty84You can try SFC /scannow in the run box...It will check your installation for any missing XP system files you might need for the printer....have a look at this link so you know what's happening.

Solve : memory?

Answer»

Howdy, how does one determine how much MEMORY a PC REQUIRES to perform at its optimal? being a novice I appreciate all thoughts.Well, I aint hardly a pro in this. But more is always better. There is no such thing as to much memory. That SAID, in a 32bit system there is a max, it won't recognize more that 4 GB of memory. A 64-bit system will not have this problem.

For working with Vista at an acceptable level i found 2GB is the minimum, any less and Vista will hog is all the memory for itself. So EVERY time you wan't something more than just Vista it has to free memory first costing valuable time...Welcome to CH,

You can also go here and run their scan on your PC.....This will tell you how much Ram your motherboard can handle.

Solve : External hard drive....?

Answer»

The last few months i've been getting a lot of CRC errors, especially when I'd downlaod a torrent then check it.
So today, I was CLEARING up room on my laptop hard DRIVE, and while transferring files they just stopped halfway through due to an I/O error. Tried copying again, still wouldn't worked. So I restarted, and it wouldn't even show up in my computer.
I restarted again, still wouldn't show up. So I checked device manager and it detected a WDC external USB device. I checked Disk manager and there is nothing there except my own laptops hard drive.
So I tried checking on a couple of friends coumputer and it wouldn't show up.
It also FROZE my laptop starting up when I rebooted.

So is this hard drive a complete loss? Is there any way I could get some files off of it?
Or should I just get a replacement?
Drive sounds blown, but I would swap the USB cable if the cable is replaceable. most of the time the drive is shot, but I have also seen bad USB cables cause PROBLEMS. If you have critical data on this drive you can pay a data recovery center to try to recover the data for you, but it can be costly. I use a software utility called GetDataBack NTFS for blown DRIVES that still spin up. It recovers data most of the time when there is table corruption and the drive spins, but otherwise can not be addressed to read information. I would try GetDataBack NTFS as for they have a try before you buy program to see if it could recovr your files before buying it. The catch is that you have to buy it to actually recover files. Maybe someone knows of a free utility, but this one I bought and it works well. So give it a try and see if the data is there or the drive is totally shot.Well, it actually worked. I'm currently backing stuff up, Imma go get a replacement today or tommorow.
Thanks =]

Solve : Half of LCD is missing... HELP!!!?

Answer»

I have a gateway laptop model: w340ua and half of the screen is not there, like its covered with white and random colors.. I hook up the laptop to an external display and works great..
So now its either the LCD screen or the LCD inverter..

What does an inverter do? Is it basically to power the lcd up? or provide colors and etc.

If someone can find me a replacement screen that would be very much appreceiated..

Here is a PIC i have attached below..

THANKS..

[SAVING space, attachment deleted by admin]Try these guys: http://www.LaptopService.comNow i am in no way an expert on this but that looks like it would be a problem with the LCD screen itself not the inverter because if it was the power supply more than likely the whole thing would go out. You will probably need to get the screen REPLACED I.E. repaired.

Solve : Laptop charger?

So i have a dell xps m1730 i have had it for about a YEAR and a half and i have never changed the charger but now it is telling me that i dont have a proper charger when i turn on the computer and it says it wont be able to charge and so it doesnt charge at all but it will run off the cable. Im not sure whats going on since just this morning it was working FINE and it hasnt even been moved or unplugged since. ANy help would be awesome!

  • Why would you change the charger?
  • "...dont have a proper charge.." OR don't have a proper charge (on the battery).
Sounds like the battery is no longer charging, you may need a new battery.
I think you may be right because i ALREADY know there are issues with this battery and have already talked to the COMPANY i bought the battery from, since this isn't the original, and am getting it arranged to get it exchanged for a new ONE. Thank you.2nd battery in a 1-1/2 years? Not good!

Solve : Help Opening my emachines T4130 Chassis?

Answer»

First off, I wan to SAY that I've checked the site and I haven't found any information on how to open my specific chassis and the information that is available does not apply to my specific computer.

I have an old Emachines T4130, and I need to open the case so I can replace the HDD. The problem is, even with all the screws out I can't get the case to budge! I've check with the manufacturer and they want to charge me for tech support because my computer is so old. I will not pay PER minute charges just to find out how to open my case. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Can you UPLOAD some photos?I think the top and sides are one piece and they slide off to the rear.
Is this it?
Slides to the back sounds right.....

http://downloads.emachines.com/userguides/DesktopPC_UserGuide_en.pdf

Page 46That's nice, but it doesn't LOOK anything like the T4130.

If were as simple as just taking the sides off, I don't think the OP would be asking.I've learned to assume nothing, in any case they have a generic manual that can only help somewhere down the road.

Hi!

I have an HP Pavilion dv1000 notebook. it had 512MB of RAM MEMORY (two slots) and i upgraded it to have 2GB.
The computer was working fine and then suddenly, it showed a blue screen and switched itself off. (this was the same day as the memory change, so i'm thinking the events are related).

this is the blue screen:

it's in spanish, but this is what it says:

"A problem has been FOUND and windows has been turned off to avoid damage to the system.
UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
if this is the FIRST time you see this screen of error detention, restart your computer. If the screen appears again, do the following:
Check that any hardware or software is proprly installed. if it is a new installation, contact your you provider to see what updates you may need.

If problems persist, stop any new software or hardware you have installed. Stop the memory BIOS options of cache and vigilance. You may need to restart you computer in error detection mode.
Technical Information:

So, do you think it is a problem with the new memory? or could it me something else, a VIRUS maybe? please help me out :(i'm super stressed)

I took some pictures of the memory... maybe theyre not properly installed....

these are the old memory CHIPS:

and these are the new memories, already in the slots.

pleas eplease please help me The new memory appear to be the correct type. I don't think that's what causing the problem, but it only takes a minute to swap it back to the old ones.

Solve : Video card and win 7?

Answer»

Out of CURIOSITY I downloaded the windows 7 UPGRADE ADVISOR to test whether my system met the requirements. It passed all but one requirement which was the windows aero STUFF, it said my graphics adaptor could not support it.

My graphics card is a nvidia geforce 8400 gs and I went on to the nvidia site and found my graphics card, I checked whether it had new drivers and I saw that it had drivers for win vista and win 7, so if I did in the future upgrade to win 7 is it simply a case of just updating the drivers to the win 7 ones? I am currently running win xp.

Thanks for any replies.Yep - that should do it. But you can install the driver now and rerun the compatibility check if you like. Thanks for the reply, but if I do install the driver the win 7 one, then won't I have problems becasue im running in xp.The driver is not going to get your performance rating to change...
Why would you want to install a Win7 driver on XP ? ?
Nothing's gonna change things...
I suggested he updates to the latest driver and then run the compatibility test.

Solve : Is there any way of "disabling" an attached laptop keyboard??

Hi there,

My laptop keyboard recently went crazy and decided to mess up and not work, so I bought a cheap \wireless keyboard which I now use as a replacement - which is PLACED on top of the attached keyboard.

However, recently the keyboard as started pressing random keys repeatedly (eg. ////////////////////////) and the only way I fix this is to bash the keys on the keyboard, and then it goes away.

I've tried deleting the drivers from the C: drive but I can't do this, it says I need permissions EVEN though I'm an administrator.

Is there any way I could stop the keyboard from being re\co\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\k7

^ there is a fine example where it happened in the middle of this post...

...from being recognized by the laptop?

It is a Samsung R510 running Windows Vista.

ThanksThe simple answer is to not PUT the wireless on top of the bad keyboard. Move it about three feet away and try it.Or 3 inches. Just not on top of the laptop!Haha, never thought the REPEATED key strokes could be the keyboard pressing against the keyboard...

however, if this doesn't work and to save me creating another thread, how would I disabled the keyboard?Laptop keyboard can be disconnected, but it's not for those with little or no manual dexterity. If you're referring to my early problem, that wasn't me and that fixed itself and the laptop now boots perfectly.

On topic:

I've been using my wireless keyboard not on top of my keyboard on my laptop.. and I'm stilling getting the repeated key strokes. So, if you could be so kind as to tell me how to disconnect a keyboard I'd be most grateful.

I've built computers before and I've replaced the RAM is this one, so I think I can trust myself not to break it. There appears to be no SUPPORT for the R510 laptop on Samsung's website. You're on your own to figure out how to take it apart and remove the cable that connects the keyboard to the motherboard.

Solve : Resolution stuck at 640X480?

Answer»

Okay, the other day I was helping a friend out with his computer. He was claiming to have video card problems, so i TOOK a look and sure enough, he was. I know this because his onboard video works just fine.

I brought his computer over to my place and tried putting my graphics card into his computer in place of his. His computer didn't even detect it. So, i tried putting them both (separately) back into my computer and ever since then my RESOLUTIONS been stuck on 640X480, 60Hz, 32 colors.

The cards:
-Nvidia 7300gs and 8400gs

Other specifications:
-Windows XP professional
-AMD athlon 3200 2.0
-1.5g RAM

When it happened:
-Right after I had tried using my graphics card in his computer
-Was RUNNING at 1280x1024 beautifully beforehand

What i've done to resolve this:
-Uninstall, reinstall drivers both from website and from the CD
-Reseat card multiple times
-Confirmed PCI express slot is active in BIOS

What i think it is:
-Graphics card is fried altogether from friends' pci express slot on his motherboardQuote

So, i tried putting them both (separately) back into my computer and ever since then my resolutions been stuck on 640X480, 60Hz, 32 colors.
Did you resolve this?
Is you computer running OK now?
Did his card fry your computer?
My computer's running great with the exception of the resolution being stuck at 640x480. Tried putting both cards in and installing each individual driver separately and STILL nothing. It detects the card upon driver installation and when i GO to the Nvidia control panel to change the resolution, it gives me the different resolution options, but when i select them, it doesn't change at all. It even has the precaution notification that says 'If you can't see this, it will revert within 15 seconds' - but even that is listed in 640x480 after selecting a higher resolution.

What i think has happened is that his PCI Express slot has fried both of our cards.

Solve : Friend's PC?

Answer»

I have a friend who uses Dual Monitors for his Business. He has a dual monitor video card. It is only 16MB and I think it is limited. His picture is elongated. I have seen where people use an onboard video card along with a second AGP or PCI Video Card to run two monitors. Is there any secret I should know before I send my friend to the STORE to buy a Video Card.

Just want to gain some more insight.

He does not need any more computer problems!!!Maybe not onboard video, but primary and secondary video cards. Onboard designates "on the motherboard". COMPUTERS usually do not allow simultaneous OPERATION of onboard video and dedicated video cards. Picture is elongated because both monitors need to have the same aspect ratio (width:height), i.e. resolution. You can set them differently, but it's difficult for the eye to adjust from one to the other. Older monitors and TV's were 4:3, wide monitors and TV's are 16:9. Before buying a video card, you need to know more about the computer and the monitors, too.Video card with 16MB of RAM is rather obsolete. You can get one with 512MB for about 50 bucks.

Solve : Can some suggest a video card compatible with my motherboard??

Answer»

As of now im stuck with an nVidia 6150se that came on board with my Foxconn M61PMV series motherboard. I'd like to upgrade to a 9800 or an 8800, as I use it most for gaming, but there are so MANY different video cards that say 9800/8800 on them, like a BFG, Galaxy, Asus, etc. and I just need to know what will work with my computer. If you need more specs, just ask.At the very least, you should be AWARE that the CURRENT PCIe x16 slot on your board is PCI express version 1.0, not the latest 2.0 standard which supports more bandwidth. So when you decide on how much you want to spend, keep in mind that you may SAVE some money by purchasing a card designed to use the 1.0 standard (not the 2.0 standard). If you purchased a card designed to take advantage of 2.0 architecture, it will still work in your x16 slot, but the data throughput will not be OPTIMIZED. So if you have to decide between two cards that are the same with the exception of the bandwidth standard (1.0 or 2.0), a 1.0 card might be cheaper.

Solve : Video settings.?

Answer»

Hi, first off if I posted this in the wrong section I'm sorry.

Well here is my problem, I recieved my computer from a friend already set up, I just plugged it in and went without touching any settings. I had a some problems so I had to re-install Vista, everything when fine, I've been using it with no problems for a few weeks now.

I play online games and ever since I installed Vista again I get very low frames per second. Before I would get around 20-30 fps now I never get above 8 fps on any game I play. I don't understand what is wrong, except maybe some settings are wrong with my monitor or video card, since I don't know much about such settings I thought I would ask others that might know more, you.

So I'm not sure what info I should give, so I'll try to list what I can and if more is needed please ask.

Monitor-
Name brand: Sony
Model #: SDM-HS9FP
Also says on the back "TFT LCD Color Computer Display

If I right-click the desktop and go to personalize it list
1. (Default monitor) on NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
2. (Default monitor) on NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS

Then if I click on Advanved settings and go to monitor tab it says
Monitor Type: Default monitor and Screen refresh rate is set to 60 Hertz, I can't select the Properties button.
Not sure what else to list.

Video card-
Type: NVIDIA GeForse 8800 GTW
If I try to "Update driver" through device manager and let it look for drivers on my computer/internet it says it has the most recent driver.
Again, I don't know what else to put.

I know this isn't alot of info but I'm not sure what else to put, just ask if you need anything,

Thanks for any help.
Go to http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us and download the driver. Specifically, you need the driver at http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_191.07_whql.html, assuming your version of Vista is 32 bit.I have the specific driver already, doesn't help any unfortunately. Thank you for the reply though, if anyone else has any IDEAS I'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks.Anyone else may have an idea? What did you use to reinstall Vista (recovery partition, recovery/restore DVD, Microsoft Retail Install DVD, OEM Install DVD) ?

Basically, I'm wondering whether you need to reinstall the motherboard chipset and onboard device drivers.

I'm not a "gamer" so I'm not up to date on video card technology; however, why the different designations for the video card: "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS" and "NVIDIA GeForse 8800 GTW" ?Quote from: dahlarbear on October 22, 2009, 04:23:55 AM

Let me try to explain everything from the start.
I recieved the used computer from a friend, it worked fine for awhile but I got a key logger >< (stupid me). Anyways, I heard the only way to get rid of it was to wipe and reinstall vista from scratch. So I used a burnt disc that my friend sent with the computer and did just that. I want to call it restoring or formatting but to be honest I'm sure exactly which it was. I put the disc in and followed the directions, in the end my computer was like completely new. None of my old files or anything.

I went through device manager and only thing that didn't have a driver was the sound card so I installed that with the disc. Then later on I upgraded my video card to the newest driver from Nvidia website.

That's about it really, I didn't touch anything else or change any settings else where. Before I formatted/restored I would easily get 20+ fps on any game and since then I never get higher then 7 fps.

I did try to find a driver for my monitor, though I'm not sure if there is one. Only thing I found that I thought was the driver said it's not for Vista, which is what I have, so I never installed it. Again, if any more information is needed, please ask and tell me where I can find it and I'll be glad to search for it, I CHECK back here regularly.

Thanks again for any help, it's driving me crazy Quote from: nixxo on October 22, 2009, 04:55:13 AM

Perhaps your "friend" knows what kind of disc you have (recovery/restore DVD, Microsoft Retail Install DVD, OEM Install DVD) ? Also what service pack level is the disc at (or your current system) ?

Is this a brand name computer (e.g. Dell, HP, Gateway, ...) or a custom build ? Is there supposed to be a separate motherboard drivers disc ?Unforutnately I can't get a hold of my friend at the moment, she lives acrossed the country and is unreachable. As for the disc I put it in my system and tried to see if it had a name or anything but it doesn't. When I run it the first window asks to install WIndows Vista so I assume installation disc of some sort.
Edit: The burnt disc is actually a DVD +R, so it's a dvd not a cd.

Orginally the system is Service pack 1, as we speak Vista is installing Service pack 2.

As far as I know about the computer, it isn't custom built, just has new Video card and ram installed. The computer is a Sony VAIO and the OS is Windows Vista Ultimate.

Hope that answered everything, it's the best that I know at this point in time. Anything else, please ask and I'll do my best to answer. If it's something I can find on my own, if possible say how to locate it, so I don't either get CONFUSED or give the wrong information.Just wanted to say I found the problem. I feel pretty stupid but it had nothing to do with my computer but some settings I had in a few games >< Thanks for those who tried to help.

YOURE right , I fix computers and that why I post on here several times. Patio and Allan, its not how many broken computers I have, its how many broken computers my clients bring in. You guys are very helpful, thanks for your help.
So you get paid to fix computers, but you don't know how - so you come here for help and we do it for you for free? Nice.allan good one, no I do know how to fix computers but theres some small questions that I have from time to time that help me find out more. For example if a computer doesnt boot, then I know how to go into safe mode and try to figure out which driver is causing the problem. But I like to find out new ways of doing thing, and easier ways too, so I ask questions like the one I asked in this thread about when you use recovery vs repair.

After all I couldnt run a computer business by just relying for help from here or any other forum, cause I might get help but not when I want it. I night have deadlines, but its unfair of me to expect you to stick to them. But I get good knowledge from here. Thanks guys.

Oops - SORRY - didn't even notice that it's a laptop. Yes it is a laptop. and an onboard video. So how do i go about the broblem now you have gotten a good picture of the problem i am having. You can either:

1) Look at the invoice for the laptop if you kept it. It should detail the PARTS including the video chip or

2) Contact the laptop manufacturer (probably your best bet) or

3) CAREFULLY OPEN the laptop and see which video chip it hasso,is the video card removable and replaceable. Or will it require replacing the motherboard entirely. You should probably contact hpThe laptop is nc6000. Please can u give me details on how to lose it. I have tried before but after removing the screws, some parts refused to open when i tried pulling it.I have succeeded in opening the laptop and i found out that the video card is intergrated on the BOARD. So what do i do to solve the problem. Do i have to CHANGE the motherboard. Take it to the shop...

Here's my situation: Yesterday, I needed to move my computer from one room to the next. It was working just fine before I shut it all down and disconnected everything. I set everything up in the new room and connected everything properly (I think). The last thing I did was plug the computer into it's power cord. When I did that, there's a little green light on the back of the computer that seems to be connected to the power supply within the computer. It was blinking. The little blue LED behind the power button on the front of the computer was blinking in unison with this green light. I tried to turn the computer on by pushing this power botton as I would usually do, but nothing happens. Does this sound like something shorted in the power supply and it needs to be replaced, or what? I'm almost ready to chuck it out the window and buy a new computer. (I will if the power supply costs half of what a new computer will cost). Can anyone advise? Thanks!I don't think it's a power supply, just yet, but they are only about $30. I don't think you can get a new computer for $60? If you've had it on the floor for 3 years, it could just be CHOKED with dust bunnies. It HAS been on the floor for a while. I opened it up and it IS pretty dusty inside. I'll need to blow it out, I GUESS. Not sure I would trust myself to replace the power supply, but I can try it. Thanks for the reply, though. Maybe I'm just looking for an excuse to by a new computer.I'm not saying it's the power supply, just yet, because you said some of the lights came on. The PSU (Power Supply Unit) puts out a number of different voltages, some of which turn on when you plug it in and do not press the power button. Some computers protect themselves from turning on if the CPU fan won't spin or is disconnected. Maybe when you moved it, something came loose inside. That could be a possibility. I thought I was careful with it when I moved it yesterday, though. I guess I just thought since it was working just fine when I shut it all down yesterday, that it's just weird that it won't start up when I hooked it back up. You wouldn't happen to know abouts what it would cost to take it to BEST Buy and have them replace the power supply or something, would you? Would you suggest I simply get some COMPRESSED air and do a nice blow out of it first and then try plugging it back in and see if it starts up?Costs about the same as taking your car in for repair. Hourly rates are the same.

Solve : Aspire 4520 Startup Repair?

Answer»

My Granddaughters Acer Aspire 4520 64x2 running Windows VISTA, over heated (fan plugged with lint) when it restarted it went to Startup Repair. I don't know what she did but now it tells me files are not there. I have a Recovery Disk but have to get to BIOS to reset Boot order. Problem; when I start the computer the keyboard arrow keys are not working so I can not make any choices. Any advice will be great.Since this is a laptop (I assume), remove the power cord and the battery for a few minutes, just to make sure it's really shut off. Then reconnect both, depress power button and immediately and CONTINUOUSLY tap the Setup key (to ENTER the BIOS). On your Acer, it's not the arrow keys but DEL or F1 or F10. You should be able to set Boot Order there. I think the other menu you see is located on the recovery partition.Sorry this has been a bad week so I am just now getting back to this computer.
This is a laptop computer and I have replaced the cooling fan, double checked the connection for the keyboard, discovered Acer has problems with keyboard "Sticky Keys". I have removed both batteries and AC connections and have restarted several times with different combinations of power. The Acer Logo does come up and tells me Press F2 to enter Setup, but keyboard does not respond, even when I start pressing F2 as soon as I power up.
I removed the HD and powered up with these results:

NVIDIA Boot Agent 244.0538
Copyright (C) 2001-2005 NVIDIA Corporation
Copyright (C) 1997-2000 INtel Corporation
PXE-E61: Media Test Failure- check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting NVIDTA Boot Agent
Operating system not found.

Then I reinstalled the HD and let it start however it wanted. (No choice as keyboard does not respond). Startup Repair started and finally got to the end and these are the results of that test:

Startup Repair diagnosis and repair Log:

Session Details
==============
System Disk = \Device\Harddisk0
Windows directory = C:Windows
AutoChk Run = 0
Number of root causes = 1

to save space I will tell you all tests were "completed successfully with Error Code = 0x0". At end of report

Root cause found:
==============
Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem.

Repair action: System Restore
Result: Cancelled

Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error Code = 0x2
Time taken = 665001 ms

Those are the results of all the tests that I have been able to run.

Microsoft created a Vista Recovery disc that I downloaded via torrents and burned to DVD disk via ImgBurn ISO files. Because the laptop is set to start from HD the Recovery disk does not run so I cannot fix this problem.
Thanks JeanIf the keyboard is not responding and Acer has problems with keyboard "Sticky Keys", you can try an external keyboard.I had thought of that but if windows doesn't start, will the keyboard be recognized?
Thanks JeanSorry, thanks for the thought about the external keyboard. I will try to find one as my own computer is a laptop ALSO. it will take a day or so to get back on that.
Thanks again, JeanQuote from: ejeanruport on October 16, 2009, 12:58:03 PM

I had thought of that but if windows doesn't start, will the keyboard be recognized?
Yes.Thanks so much. will look for a keyboard. JeanFound a keyboard and adapter to USB port. lights come on on the keyboard but computer will not respond to keystrokes.
Is there an upgraded BIOS I can install to reconnect the laptop keyboard?
I contacted Acer and they want me to by a Recovery Disk, but that will cause loss of all data in the computer. Some of which is business related.
Windows is still partially working because if I leave it on long enough the screensaver will activate.
Thanks. Jean

1. If adapter not provided with the keyboard, keyboard may not function.
2. Not likely. Hard to say what's wrong; it overheated
3. You said in the 1st post you have a Recovery Disk, why do you need another?
4. Copy all the data files immediately. If you put in the recovery disk when you turn it on and pres ctrl+alt+del it should boot from the diskI am sorry but the keyboard does NOT activate so I cannot type ctrl+alt+del. I surely wish I could cause then I wouldn't have to bother anyone.
Thanks for the thought.

Solve : Computer does not recognize bootup disk?

Answer»

Good Evening,

I'm trying to get an old computer up and running. It used to WORK until some CONSTRUCTION guys did some demolition in the adjoining room. It seems some substance has affected this PC.

I did a thorough cleaning of the hardware but with no result.

When I boot up the system claims that the hd is unbootable. I substituted a hd I know is bootable and got the same result.

When I look into the BIOS it seems not to be able to automatically find the hd. A manual setting makes no difference.

I'm THINKING the mb has a problem.

What do you guys think?

AMD 3400+ CPU
MSI K8N Neo2-FX mb
1 GB memory
nVidia 6800 GT video card
You have to clean all the dirt out of all the connectors.
You can use Alcohol (70%)as well as compressed air.
I some cases only alcohol can lift out the crud.
Most of the time it is the flat cable connectors that get filled with crud in a dusty environment. Inspect the connectors with a magnifier glass.
Make sure is is dry before you turn on power.Try a different data cable. Check you jumper settings.

How did you clean it? Did you ground yourself to the case? Static electricity can fry your circuit boards.I've built many computers, INCLUDING this one so I know I didn't fry the board.

I cleaned it by removing the boards and blowing air into all crevices and crannies. Also taking out the dust bunnies.

When I first tried to start the PC, I'd get a flash of power and then everything would go dead. So I replaced the PSU and it ran but failed to recognize the hds.

The hds are IDE. So I disconnected them and connected a SATA drive. Same result.

So by actually using different cables there was no change. Hence I don't think the problem is in the IDE cables which is why I SUSPECT the mb.

It will do this if standoffs are not installed/missing...
Did you use them ?Gypsum dust from drywall is a killer....

http://www.sunmanagers.org/archives/1993/0510.htmlStandoffs were installed initially and have not been tampered with since.

The fact that a new hd (the SATA one that was not exposed to the dust) could not be recognized by the BIOS indicates to me that the problem is not in the hds.

With respect to the rest of the article, the problem began the day after dry wall was installed which meant that if overheating of a circuit did occur, it happened in a relatively short amount of time and probably to the BIOS.

I can't think of another answer than to replace the mb - if I can find one like it.Quote

When I look into the BIOS it seems not to be able to automatically find the hd. A manual setting makes no difference.

What does it recognize? Is the memory OK?
Cab it boot a floppy? Does it even try?

Have you washed out all HDD connectors with Alcohol?
As another mentioned,. dry wall dust is really bad electrical connections.
You have to get it all out.

ALso does a memory stick need to be locked in in order to work?

Generally, if a memory stick can't be locked down it means it is not seated properly. On my computer the ram is automatically locked in once it's in. So for me, if it's unlocked, the rams just sitting there wasting space.

Solve : No display at all?

Answer»

I turn on my computer, fans turn on, the LED lights up and everything, but there is no video. I am quite sure I have onboard video as I dont see a PCI card. Question is what is wrong firstly and if it is that the onboard video doesnt work, then can I use a PCI card.
Its an ALASKA computer, not a brand Ive heard of before.
Either try a different DISPLAY on your system or try your display on a different system. Let's rule out a bad display before anything else. The computer is a desktop. Regasrding the display, it works cause I tried it on another computer
Did anything unusual happen the last time the system worked normally (new hw, SW, virus, error, etc)?No error or anything. The display did start acting weird though. I started seeing lines, horizontal, and then the display got kind of pixelated, and now it just kaput.

Should I PLUG in a PCI video card or is there hope for the onboard video
Don't you think you should have mentionedQuote from: shashgo on October 20, 2009, 12:49:44 PM

Don't you think you should have mentioned that?

It sounds like the on board video is shot. Try an external card if you have one.sorry i didnt know whether that mattered cause I was wondering if I could put in an external card, and not asking about the onboard video. But yes Ill try an external card. Once its in, will the computer know anyway which card to use since onboard video w ill still be enabled until I can go to the Bios and disable it?

Depending on your system you may have to disable onboard video in the bios.but how can i see the bios screen before I plug in an external video card. If my onboard video is busted, then I wont be able to see any video. You obviously do it after you install the card.I recomend a external card.Quote from: neelchauhan on October 20, 2009, 01:45:06 PM
I recomend a external card.
still working on it. i got an external card but it doesnt fit, so i have to g o get a new one. Ill post back when I get it

I told the guy that I needed a video card for my computer. He gave me one which turns out to be t he longer pci card, I think its called PCI express. I have a s hort slot, so I guess I need a PCI card right

Once again Shasgo you have provided little or no info for us to assist you...
How can we possibly recommend a vid card when we don't even know what slots are available on the MBoard ? ? ?I looked on the internet and this is w2hat I found. My card is longer and cannot fit the shorter slot in my computer so I need to get a PCI card not PCI express

yea i did need a new cd drive. The funny thing is, I dont know what went wrong with it, cause the LAST thing I did was pop in a DVD, which of COURSE didnt play, and then nothing would play in the drive. Anyhow I got me a new cd drive. I did install the OS to a partition on the HD and then reboot from that and then I cleaned out the partition of the OLD OS.

Thanks all

Solve : AMD Overdrive?

Answer»

AMD OVERDRIVE LISTS MY MEMORY AS SINGLE CHANNEL. if I CLICK THE QUESTION MARK AT THE TOP OF PAGE AND THEN THE WORD SINGLE IT EXPLAINS WITH THE MESSAGE"SINGLE =WIDTH OF DRAM INTERFACE IN 64 BIT MODE ; DUAL=WIDTH OF DRAM INTERFACE IN 128 BIT MODE" i COULD REALLY USE AN EXPLANATION OF THIS IF SOMEONE COULD AS I AM RATHER A NOVICE AND CONFUSED. I GUESS I THOUGHT IT WAS 64 AND 32 BIT AND NOW I HAVE ANOTHER SET OF MODES OR IS IT THE SAME BUT JUST STATED DIFFERENTLY? ANY HELP APPRECIATED. THANKS ric5406 System as follows GAMA790X-UD4P PHENOM-X4-9750 Sapphire HD4850 1gb Seagate 500gbHDDX2 WinVista/Win7 dualboot Patriot Viper DDR2-PC2-8500 Nice caps....although you figured out how to turn them off towards the end of your Post.If a single channel is 64-bit then two channels would double it to 128-bit. That's basically all it is saying. Thanks for the answer BC_Programmer, why doesn't it show as dual channel is really what I want to know. I am thinking that I must have something adjusted wrong. And yes Patio I GET lazy and don't like to shift. I hope my questions aren't too basic, but this is my first build and so FAR it has gone well. Most things I can puzzle out on my own but I am unable to use this overdrive program without it crashing so I am sure to be doing something wrong.Yeah...hittin that Shift button is ALOT of work....

Solve : Pacify me about this RAM issue if you can?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavilion Media Center TV Model m7667c which I purchased new in 2007
Today I decided to order some more RAM. I ordered 2 more GBs (2x1GBs)
Upon researching, I found that the maximum amount of RAM I can have is 8GBs (4x2GBs)
I also learned that my PC was suppose to have came installed with 2GBs (2x1GBs)
However, my system's information was only showing 1 GB of RAM

I removed the side cover and found that one of my RAM sticks was not locked in on the top.
(very strange since I have never messed with my RAM before in this PC)
OK, cool. I figured I COULD simply lock it down and I would now have 2GBs of RAM running.

Unfortunately, when I attempted to boot up my computer, I got the long BEEPS indicating a RAM problem.
I carefully pulled the RAM stick out and re-seated it again, and still I got the beeps once again.
So I removed it and decided to do some research until I found this forum.

My question is this:
Do you THINK it is possible that the RAM stick became defective simply by not being locked down properly from the beginning?
I can not recall how much RAM my PC showed when I first purchased it in 2007. I wish I could remember.

Can the slot itself be defective or do these beep codes only pertain to a defective RAM stick?
I haven't attempted to try the RAM in a different slot as of yet. I may wait until I receive the other 2GBs that I ordered.
I just don't want to PUT the new RAM into a defective slot and end up destroying my new RAM.

Any thoughts or suggestions that may help pacify me until I get the new RAM?

Thanks,
GaryQuote from: BrotherGary on October 09, 2009, 01:20:02 AM

Do you think it is possible that the RAM stick became defective simply by not being locked down properly from the beginning?
yes..
Try to remove the memory stick that is not lock, and place the working memory to the other slot, or try to clean the memory using an eraser and also clean the memory slot, remove all the dust coz it might be the cause of disconnection..
Here is an Update: And this is very strange to me.

I could not get the seemingly defective stick to work at all in the original slot.
I could not even get it to work in the empty slot next to it.
Then I tried taking the GOOD stick out, and putting it in the seemingly defective stick's slot, all by itself, just to SEE what would happen.
Then when I tried to boot up the PC, it kept shutting back off almost immediately. (No Beeps) No idea why

This kinda scared me, but then all I did was take the seemingly defective stick, and put it where the Good stick had originally been.
That did the trick and now I finally have 2GBs of working RAM, with 2 open slots awaiting the 2 new RAM sticks I ordered.

Thanks Hey brothergary,

When you memory stick was not locked in was it all the way properly in the slot but kept unlocked or was the stick not quite properly in there either?

Cheers,

Solve : US Camcorders?

Answer»

Someone asked "will my US bought JVC Camcorder work in the UK?"
I don't KNOW what model they have bought and what medium it records to.
So, out interest, apart from the charging of it, does it really matter?
Wouldn't the OUTPUT be COMPATIBLE wherever you download it to, or does this ntsc/pal thing still come into play?

It depends on the camcorder, it's storage type, and it's outputs. The UK is PAL.

Really NEED to know more about the camcorder.
