Solve : Monitor problem, please help.?

Answer»

I'm having a strange problem with my monitor. I was running my resolution at 1280 by 1024 for the last 14 days without incident. Then yesterday I upgraded my anti-virus software, AVG Free, and I had to REBOOT. When it came back up the resolution was back at 1152 by 864, and when I tried to set it back up to my higher resolution my monitor flashed "Sync out of range" and refused to change. Any ideas why, or how to fix it? My graphics card is brand new.

Thanks in advance.

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place, but it seemed to fit.try unplugging your monitor for a minute or so and then try it again. SOMETIMES these THINGS just need a reboot. It worked. Thank you very much.

More details, please.when you look up my model on sony's support page and search for drivers and updates for vista you can download the drivers, such as the screen driver. but when you go to make them work, or load them on the computer it SAYS that it has failed.

K i have a 17" monitor, when i loaded vista it automaticly placed a Generic non-pnp monitor on a STANDARD VGA Graphics Adapter. i tried getting a driver from ATi Radeon but for some reason there was no such driver.
Can you give me a LINK to your computer updates?

Maybe your card doesn't support Vista.

Solve : Windows 98 and Ipod?

Answer»

I think I need some help with installing/uninstalling drivers.

Using Win98SE here.

I have no experience with USB external hard drives.

Here's the goal: Be able to manage music, etc., on an Ipod Nano w/8G of storage space, under Win98SE.

I've located SOFTWARE. Yamipod. www.yamipod.com
It runs under '98, but presently cannot see the Ipod.

Began with installing a PCI USB 2.0 card. Located NEC driver and installed. I believe that is ok.

Located some drivers for external USB hard drives, and installed.

When the Ipod is connected, it is recognized. Its little screen changes to "Connected" and a reminder to eject it before disconnecting it.
Explorer SHOWS a new drive, "Removable Disk (G:)"

However, G drive cannot be accessed. Windows says the drive is not formatted. I always click No. More on this in a moment.

Next, I run Yamipod. It loads right up, but says, "Please plug in your Ipod to continue". It is not seeing the Ipod that is already plugged in, and appearing as G: drive.

In Device Manager, after plugging in the Ipod, I see a "Storage Device" -> "USB Disk". No question mark or exclamation point.

In Explorer, I can right click G: drive and eject it. Ipod gets the SIGNAL, and displays Ok to disconnect message.
Curiously, if I use the "Unplug or Eject Hardware icon" that appears in the System tray, the Ipod does not get the command.

Hopefully I've reported everything. If not, or if you have something you want me to examine or test, please ask.

I'm wondering if I've got the wrong driver. And.... I can't seem to un-install it to get to try another that I located and want to try.
Please see: www.98-drivers.com/ipod.html
That sounds LIKE exactly what I want, and I want to try it.
Note the setup instructions there, "When prompted, select "Search for updated driver (recommended)".
I don't get that chance.

What I've tried is to go into Device Manager and remove the Storage Device->USB Disk.
But, when next I connect the Ipod, I don't get a chance to try another driver - Windows sees it, and quickly installs a driver.
To me it seems that now, since a driver was once installed, Windows is simply re-installing that driver.

So - does anyone out there have experience with managing Ipods under Windows 98SE?

If not, I'd still like to try this driver, and don't know how to go about getting it installed. I'd appreciate advice on how to do that.

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Forgot to say: Ipod works fine when connected to an XP computer running ITUNES. Itunes can load music to the Ipod, and remove it, just fine.
I.e. the problem is not the Ipod.

While looking around for info on this, more than once I read that none of the Win98 software could 'initialize' an Ipod. The Ipod must first be set up on an XP machine. So... I visited an XP computer and did that first.

Solve : Local disc C:/ after format...plzzzzz help!!?

Answer»

I just Formatted my laptop and my local disc C:/ free space is 27 GB/ 37 GB .....so the used space is 10 GB??
I didn't put anything in it yet!!!
I checked my local disc C:/ and it appears that there are backup files but I'm NOT sure if they are!
how do I know which are my backup files because I'm afraid I'll delete some important files and harm my laptop>>>and then FORMAT it ALL OVER AGAIN!!!!

In my local disc I have a file named "82fde1c3ce0ef69f727c00"
I don't know what is it??? is it ok to delete it? it's 41 MB.

and I have 2 other files, one of them is named WINDOWS (2.47 GB) and other one named WINDOWS.0 (2.21 GB), both of them with same content!!! wich one should I delet?
Contact the laptop manuf.
Even if you have a HIDDEN partition which holds the recovery data it will not be SHOWN on most Windows VERSIONS.
They will be able to tell you the size of the partition and just SUBTRACT the difference from what is shown and it should add up,,,

As far as the files named Windows if you delete them you probably won't be able to use the machine.
What do you know about file management and how are you viewing these files ? ?Well...Im fairly sure you didn't actually format it at all?
Because when you install windows, it searches for already installed versions of windows (WINDOWS folder) and then if it finds one, lets you continue install, but under a different folder, in this case, WINDOWS.0!

So backup all your important documents (if not already) and follow this website on another computer if possible.
http://www.windowsreinstall.com/ Click the version of windows you want to install along the top (dont worry about versions you can select this later )

Best of luck,

KurtisIf you formatted the hard drive, how come there are files on it? or are you misusing the word "format", as many people seem to, to mean "reinstall Windows"?

Solve : phyisical memory?

Answer»

i noticed in my system information(running vista HOME premium) that my total phyiscal memory was 1.525.50 gb and my available phyisical memory was only 723.07 gb.my question- there must be a way of recovering some of that memory can anyone shed some light on this subject for me and mabey there is a software program for me to try.any sugestions would be greatly appreciated, thx sligster1525 mb is the amount of installed ram and 723mb is the amount of ram left over from the system using what it needs.
To free up some of it, you would have to turn off some services or delete some startup programs in msconfig. (HIT Win+R, and type msconfig)Vista will use almost everything available...it handles RAM differently than in the past.
Are you having any issues ? ?I would also add a stick of RAM so that it doesnt start using HardDrive space just in CASE. CAUSE then it will cause the HD to go bad.If this were TRUE all Windows machine would have dead hard drives as all versions of Windows use a swapfile...

Solve : hook up my computer to tv?

Answer»

Hello, I got a cable today so I can WATCH my computer from my tv. I have a nvidia 8500GT card and Intel dual cpu at 1.6 ghz winxp sp2. When i hook up the cable to the vga card and tv my computer crashes. Anyone know what to do?what kind of cable is it? which port are you plugging the cable into on your computer? which ports are you plugging the cable into on your tv?The guy at the store sold me a cable that has 4 prongs. my vga card takes 7, but it does fit and the guy said that cable works. the port is RIGHT next to my monitor port. on the tv end I plugged it into the female video in hole. I got it to show a picture for one second and the screen and mouse on my pc froze, had to restart. after that tried again and sometimes I get BSODdoes it look like this?
Yep, thats me!What kind of guy??? It possible could be overload your SYSTEM an I would use the recommened cord not one that he thinks should be okay.Quote from: cygnus1 on April 14, 2008, 02:48:55 PM

Yep, thats me!
and is it the same connector on both sides of the cable? (I should have asked earlier)
Yes, with a adapter to fit a RCA jack for "Video in"well, it seems that the connection is most likely CORRECT, assuming you're plugging the cords into the right ports everywhere. The next step is to see if you have the most recent drivers for your video card. you can download drivers from the manufacturer's website. install them, and try it again.I do have the latest driver, but I will reinstall and see if that works! Thanks for the help!If your gonna reinstall, I would COMPLETELY uninstall first.get the 7 prong HDTV cable and retest. Maybe 4 prong cable doesn't work (well)

Solve : Slow Boot?

Answer»

Hi,
My system is Motherboard:- Gigabyte 81875 with Bios V6 running windows XP pro and a Pentium 4 2.8 with 2gb DDR ram.
I've got a problem with a new HDD. About a 3 weeks ago I had a HDD failure but luckily I had a mirror image of my master HDD (160gb as master on ide1 with a DVD rom drive) on a secondary HDD 160gb as secondary on ide2with a second DVD rom drive) in the computer.
I had disabled that HDD and only connected it when I wanted to update my mirror image. I used Acronis to do the work.
I bought a new 250gb HDD and used Acronis to reload my operating system from HDD2.When I first did the update everything seemed to be working OK but suddenly the bootup time on the new HDD went to 8mins.
so I disconnected the new HDD and booted from the OLD HDD which booted in 4.5 mins. So I gather that it is not the software but a problem with the hardware setup. Just to prove that the new HDD was OK I
reformatted the new drive and re-installed XP Pro. The bootup time was only just over a minute so the HDD I assume is OK.
I've tried to contact Gigabyte but after 4days I've still not had a response. I understand that there is a problem with older Bios not being able to recognize a larger HDD but as the HDD seemed to function OK initially
I'm not so sure this is my problem also the motherboard has a SATA connector, does this mean I can use a SATA HDD as well as an IDE?
perhaps someone can point me in the right direction.
Make sure to check the jumpers on the HDD. If your P4 mobo can only handle 1.5 gb/s it may be wishful thinking that you can set the jumpers to 3.0 gb/s.

I'm guessing, THOUGH, that if your drive has SATA connectors it may be capable of 3.0 gb/s. Could be worth checking the manual. How exactly did you create the image file in Acronis ? ?
Did you Verify the image after creating it ? ?
What ver. of Acronis ?Hi Patio,
The Acronis is version 8.0 and I used the Disk Clone part of Acronis and the Automatic function. As I said I FORMATTED the HDD and then did another Disk Clone and I still have the same problem. I've tried to contact Gigabyte to ask about the SATA connection as well but to date no reply.

Regards,
DaveIt still could be the image itself.
One of the important tools included with Acronis since version4 or so is a tool that's used to 'verify" the image after it's created.

Another issue may be the SATA drivers on the image.
Is the new 250 the same brand as the one the image is from ? ?
Hi Patio,
The HDDs are different makes, the 160gb HDD is a Maxtor and the 250gb is a Western Digital. Both the HDDs are on IDE 160gb on IDE channel2 & the 250gb on IDE channel 1 so I don't think the SATA drivers come into the equation, or do they?
Also in acronis, I have found the Check image tool but it seems as if all it does is check the image and does not COMPARE with the original image, I suppose the program would show up any faults on the image but do you think there is a fault or just a problem.
What program would you use to create a duplicate image on a secondary HDD just in case of main HDD failure?

Regards,

DaveI would and do use Acronis for that task...the image tool does indeed compare the 2 for discrepancies.
I usually RUN it right after creating an image and before burning it to DVD...

Solve : Computer starts up, Moniter does not correspond?

Answer»

I've recently had trouble with my CDROM drive, so I opened tower (SOMETHING I haven't done before and have no experience with), and tried to see if there was something internally wrong with it.
After opening it and seeing that I don't have a clue how to dismantle everything, I decided to just vacuum all the built up dust inside, and then I sealed it back up, hooked all the wires back up. (also, when it was OPEN, I did accidentally knock some big circuit board thing along the side ajar, although I think I've GOT that back in place).
I turned the tower on, it initially made a loud, unusual noise, like maybe something was loose. Also, nothing came up on the monitor (except for its standby screen). I switched it off and on. Nothing changed, so I gave a light but firm smack upon the top of the tower. The noise stopped, but it still doesn't work. Everything sounds normal in the tower on startup, except for ONE loud, sustained beep that the tower emits when I start it.
Any help is greatly appreciated! What operating system are you using on the computer?

Do you get any output on the display at all when you start it up?When you say knocked ajar..you mean bent vertically or like it had come out of a socket?I'm using Windows XP. The only thing that shows up on the monitor is an icon says the monitor is working, and to check the cables and computer.

It's a circuit board thing that's flat, is vertical, and is along the side of the tower. It slid a bit out of place to the side, but I think it's slid back in correctly.
Yeah, I don't know what it exactly is (motherboard, graphics card, whatever). I'm obviously quite dumb with this stuff, so I appreciate the help! Quote

I decided to just vacuum all the built up dust inside
Never use vacuum inside the computer. It produces a lot of static. You might have had fried something.Yeesh. How would I tell what exactly was fried? What is computer make, and model?
Windows version?
Can you hear hard drive spinning, and fans running?
Does that sustained beep ever end?Not sure of the make or model. The tower has 2 little labels, one that has "USitek" on it, and the other with Intel, Pentium 4.
I'm using Windows XP.
The fans are running, and I'm pretty sure the hard drive is spinning.
Yeah, the sustained beep only lasts for a second or two.Try to reseat your RAM sticks. I'm sorry for being so clueless about this, but what are those, where would I find them, and how do I reseat them?I was really calm know I'm not, I get very frustrated when people do this first NEVER SMAKE YOUR TOWER This an cause several problems. First off I assume it was probably your video card that you mite have pushed loose. Remove the screw an the card then with a light firm grip put it back in an screw it down. Secondly you said it beeped so it could be the RAM as well. HTTP://ralphlosey.files.wordpress.com/2007/06/ram.jpg This is what you RAM probably looks like. Use the same method as for the Video Card. But I would try the card first to see if that doesnt fix it. Your vacuum could also have inhaled one or more MBoard jumpers.Where are the MBoard jumpers, and where's the MBoard, while we're at it?This is a MBoard:

Manufacturing is different with each so jumpers can be located just about anywhere...

Solve : Mouse goes on and off line?

This all began while playing OBLIVION - a game that has caused many problems on my system.

Recently the mouse goes off line and then almost immediately, back on line.

Then it started happening when I wasn't playing the game, in NORMAL computer operations (although not NEARLY as often).

I've switched the USB PORT of the mouse, but to no avail.

Specifics:
Mouse: Logitech MX510 (corded)
Win. XP PRO sp2

AMD dual core 4800+

Solve : All sorts of problems :(?

Answer»

Hey everyone,
Recently, my dell 5100 crapped out on me after a good 4 year run. I think it was the motherboard that blew out as it wouldnt turn on anymore. Anyway, I picked up a shuttle XPC barebone, and just salvaged parts from the dell. To my dismay, when I boot up the computer, it will automatically restart its self after the windows xp loading screen and before the windows log in screen. I thought it could be some corrupt files so I was going to try and reformat the harddrive, however now when I try to boot from cd, it says Verifying Pool Data - skips a line - Boot from CD: - but when i try to press anything on the keyboard to execute the command, nothing happens. Any idea whats wrong??

Any HELP is appreciated

AIM: sjabbs
email: [emailprotected]Give this a try..
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/russel_02may13.mspxi take it that you just pulled the Hard Drive out and put it into the new shuttle? if its a DIFFERENT motherboard it wont boot because it will still be trying to load the drivers for that specific board so yes...your only real option is to do a repair install of windows this is DONE by booting from the disk...which you cant do so...did u change any jumpers? because I know on some motherboards there are jumpers u can change to disable the PS/2 ports and stuff...can you access the BIOS and MOVE around?

If you do, by some miracle (PERHAPS try another keyboard?) get into XP setup, you want to skip the first screen untill it says scanning for previous versions of microsoft windows, and it should detect ur XP setup, and then just click r on the keyboard to start a repair install which will keep all your desktop setting and the like but set it up for the new motherboard

Goodluck!

Solve : Vertical lines on monitor?

Answer»

I am experiencing vertical flickering lines on my monitor. When I move the mouse around it will SOMETIMES help clear it up. It seems to be getting worse with TIME. I have updated my video card and my refresh rate and cables are good. I tried SWITCHING to a new monitor and the problem is STILL there. Does anyone have any idea what else I can try? ThanksWith all power unplugged open the case and remove and re-seat the vid card.
Leave the case open for now so you can make sure the vid card FAN works properly on power up.
If this still persists as you have tried 2 monitors already the card may be failing.

Solve : Motherboard swap problems?

Answer»

Hey all. I just finished installing my new motherboard, unfortunately I've already run into a problem. When I get to the log in to windows SCREEN, neither my MOUSE nor my keyboard works(both USB, but they don't work in ps2 ports either). This is especially weird since my keyboard works fine with my bios, before I run windows. I've tried several mouses, and several usb ports, but its always the same thing. I tried SAFE mode as well, but again same thing. The bios has all the usb ports set to enabled. I was kinda looking forward to finally having my computer back, but I guess the computer gods are against me. Lmk if you have any suggestions.

Cheers,
AndyIf the hard drive is prior to the MBoard replacement it's still trying to load the drivers from the last known good hardware configuration...
This may be why it's having troubles.
Are you saying the PS2 devices didn't work or are they USB devices with PS2 adapters ?PATIO is right, if your getting into windows thats lucky for a M/B replacement!
Boot up into safe mode by tapping f8 just after the BIOS disappears and selecting safe mode, which will load your default drivrs, though u might have to use a PS/2 mouse and Keyboard to do this, and remove your mouse and keyboard drivers by right clicking my computer in the start menu, clicking properties, hardware tab, device manager, open the keyboards and uninstall that, and then the same with your mouse.
Reboot and report back

Solve : Unresponsive Beeping Keyboard?

Answer»

Okay. My keyboard somehow went for a bath. I opened it up and tried to dry it. Plugged in and keys were screwed up. Like the Space Bar was =. Cleaned it some more. Now no keys work, and I get a constant beeping.

Computer specs:
Windows XP Home Edition
Service Pack 2
Keyboard is an HP...don't know anything else.

No installation disc
Buying a new keyboard i out of the question...unless the price isn't bad

I'll give any other needed informationIt may come back once it's completely dry.

I have seen basic KEYBOARDS with PS2 and / or USB plugs for as little as $10 - 12 US.This basically means it's detecting that more then 3 buttons are being pushed down...time for a new keyboard! Easier to get a new one but sometimes the random beep is CAUSED by three stuck keys. If you REALLY feel like tring to save it POP the keys off. If dring it out doesnt work.Below is Wal-Mart keyboard link...They bez cheap!!!!

Solve : Athlon xp 1800+ is underclocked?

I've noticed during post that my processor is clocked at 733mhz. I doubled checked my processor info. on my pc and it was really running at 733mhz.

I've tried resetting my jumper setting to 100mhz and 133mhz including the bios, and STILL the same result, except that in a 100mhz, i was clocked at 550mhz or something.....

what COULD be the main cause of this problem....I'd appreciate immediate reply to this....Thanks in advance

i wanted the above system to boot from the 80gb hdd (from another computer p4s800 mx, windows xp professional service pack 2).but when i took 40gb hdd out and replaced with 80gb hdd (jumper settings 'cable select'),computer recognised the hdd, i pressed F1 to save CHANGES and then monitor screen goes to screen showing all set up and boot keys options and then monitor screen turned grey with blinking cursar on top left corner of the screen, did not go further.

i tried with jumper settings to 'master' still the same problem.

please help to boot from this diskDid you format the drive??? In the BOIS are you gettting your new hard disk's NAME displayed..hi

i did not format my disk because i have stuff on this along with windows xp professional service pack 2.

when i connect the hdd, first display on monitor screen is hp logo and at the BOTTOM of the screen F9:boot menu, F10:set up utilities, F12: network service boot, it stays for few seconds and then goes to black screen with following messege written in white writings,

If i press F1 to save changes then next screen is grey with blinking cursar and stays there.

please help to set up.

thank you for your time.can you plz reply to my QUESTION above..yes, i can see in bios my drive and its name

thanksSo you are trying to install XP to the 80G HDD correct ?

Does this XP CD say Windows and have shiny holograms all over it ? ?i do not want to install windows xp on this drive because this drive is from another working computer with xp already installed on this.

i want to use this to run computer( i am just swaping hard drives).

thanksThis rarely works because XP is not supposed to be moved from machine to machine and simply run...
This is by design.
You could try a Repair Install of XP on the 40G drive if it is having issues.
Read thru the directions paying special attention to the Warnings as all data can be lost if not done properly...
I suggest printing out a copy for reference.

NOTE if you do this with the 80G drive it will then be tied to that machine with the validation and the 40G install is no longer valid.

Solve : problem with hard drives?

Answer» HELLO. i have two hard DRIVES installed on my comp. ones is a 160gb with ubuntu and plenty of space left. the other is a 300 gb with xp installed. my problem is that sometimes when im doing something in ubuntu, out of nowhere you can hear the harddrive make a weird noise and then the whole comp freezes and ill have to switch the power on then back off. any ideas what it could be? sounds like a dying harddrive. i would purchase a replacement drive ASAP.is there any way to know for sure?
yepp,
my friend, that sounds just like it. you didn't mention how old the HDD was. and be carefull with the other HDD, sometmes when you don't screw the HDD in it's place, they become older then they are due to the vibrations.
cheers!!obviosly the only way to know for sure is to transplant it in another computer preferably without other HDDs in there. Check if the problem PERSISTS. Or you can check the web site of the company that made the drive and download the testing tools for the drive.

thanks a lotQuote from: Aldom92 on April 14, 2008, 12:49:33 AM

Solve : Problem booting my computer, and crazy screen problem..?

Answer»

The past few DAYS when I go to TURN on my computer, nothiing really HAPPENS. It turns on, but you don't see anything in the monitor, and the keyboard lights are EVEN off, so it's like the computer isn't going through POST or something.

After a few TRIES of on/off it works.

But then there's this weird problem where the screen looks all hazy/electric/with static. Kinda like this example I found: http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/2/214953.jpg

What could be happening?

jst tried the integrated viideo and nothing. it's probably RAMIt could be a problem with BIOS, just check and see what the settings are.

Solve : Adding an IDE hard drive, to a computer with two sata2 Hard Drives.?

Answer»

I tried HOOKING up a 60 gig IDE hard DRIVE to my ASUS A8N5X motherboard and its not detecting it.

The computer is already set up with windows Xp and windows 98 on 2 seperate Sata2 hard drives.

The IDE hard drive is compatible with the motherboard from what I know, and Ive tired installing it with several different jumper positions. Although Id PREFER to have it on as a secondary slave drive. All I want to do is reformat the drive so I can give it to a friend.

Things Ive tried.....

I tried putting it in a different IDE port by removing the DVD burner.

I tried removing the Sata2 hard drives and installing the IDE drive as a master.

I tried all 3 different jumper positions on the IDE drive.

Yet every time I boot the computer up the drive is not detected. If you need more details about the computer just let me know. I don't know if there is an operating system on the IDE drive but I don't think there is. I also have no drivers for the IDE drive but I figured I didn't need drivers. Ive never tried hooking an IDE drive to a computer already using SATA technology.

Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance. where is it not being detected? in the BIOS or in windows? It was about a week ago, but im pretty sure neither the bios or windows detected the driveQuote from: Mikenet2008 on April 14, 2008, 04:06:25 AM

you need to be 100% sure or we cannot safely determine what is causing the problem.I got it to work thankfully, the problem was just that the power cord I was using was not supplying power to the hard drive. I tried using another one and it detected it right away. Thanks anyway though.try to put it on a primary slave...Quote from: kensau on April 15, 2008, 04:28:03 AM

i would think about purchasing a new power supply as the one you are currently using sounds like it wont last much longer.

Solve : jittery sound?

Answer»

I have a Dragon Ultra SY-P4X400 (that I built myself), P4 3.08Ghz, 1G RAM, Maxtor 320G HD, Maxtor 120G HD, Maxtor 320G USB external HD, Seagate 160 G HD, Lite-On CD/DVD-R/CW, Creative CD-R/CW, running WinXP SP2. The sound is onboard C-Media 8738 PCI audio.

My PROBLEM is whenever I play anything with sound....a MP3, MPEG, AVI, DVD or streaming VIDEO, the sound is jittery, Hiccups. It'll sort of freeze for a second and then jerkingly start playing. A minute, a few minutes, 30 minutes laster, it'll do it again.

I have uninstalled and REINSTALLED old sound drivers and new drivers. Nothing has worked. I did have to REINSTALL WinXP during December. Everything was working fine up until then.

Help?Borrow a sound card from a friend. MAYBE your on-board chip is going south.

Solve : MTron SSD Pro 7000 running slow?

Answer»

Hi

I'm wondering if I can get some advice.

I have an Mtron SSD Pro 7000 2.5" drive which I bought to run with my Dell VOSTRO 1700 laptop.
I bought the SSD to perform backtest runs for an automated trading system and database.

I purchased the Dell Vostro 1700 because it was 1 of 2 notebooks that Dell sells that facilitates 2 internal drives.
After many hours with Dell Tech support, it turns out that the Vostro has some kind of problem running the 2nd internal drive.
I therfore RAN the Mtron SSD externally on the Vostro with a usb cable.
I found that when the SSD was connected before booting the notebook, it would run 50% faster than if I connected it after the boot.
I MEASURE this by the time it takes to perform 1 run (2 MINS when connected before the boot, 3 mins when connected after.)

I EVENTUALLY resolved the issue with Dell and they sent me an XPS 1730 (the other system that facilitates a 2nd drive) for the same price as the Vostro
I installed the SSD and there was no problem as with the Vostro.
However, it is running 50% slower than when connected externally through the usb cable!

I formatted the drive ntfs and it is connected using the stock dell sata cable.
The drive is also in performance mode (write cacheing has been enabled)

Can anyone suggest how I can get it to run as fast internally as externally?

thanks

Solve : Is it possible that there are no CD-RW's for my comp??

Answer»

Hello!

Recently I realised I need a way to copy media off my computer so the logical choice was to call up a local computer store and ask about CD burners, the guy got all huffy with me and spent a long time TALKING about how because my laptop is 7 years old, only has a pentium 3, 200 some MB of Ram, and one GB of freespace on the harddrive(it's a gateway), doesn't have a 2.0 usb has the older type - that there aren't any CD burners in existence compatible and I was wasting my and his time trying to buy anything for the, "old piece of junk" - I'm inclined to believe him just because I know how quickly things evolve with computers but I'm shocked that my laptop is basically dead in the water if what this guy says is true - the reason he gave is because CD burners weren't that popular 6 or 7 years ago there just aren't any available that would work with my comp.

Is it true?tell us what the model is and we'll check if it is too old.
It's a gateway solo 5300If you take the current cd-rom drive or floppy drive out of the laptop, what does the connector LOOK LIKE? Is it located in the middle on the back, or on the side?
New cd/dvd drives have them on the side, like this: http://tinyurl.com/5nff6w
If it LOOKS like that, then you can put a new drive in there. If not, you'll have to do more searching. if you have a USB port on your gateway, then you can just get an external CD-RW like the LaCie CD-RW 52X/24X/52X USB which you can just connect thru your usb port WITHOUT having to take any cd-rom or floppy drive out.

Just get the right drivers for your CD-RW if your operating system doesn't detect it automatically. Thanks, I didn't mention... I was looking for a USB drive, but I guess it actually might be better to have an onboard drive - I didn't even think of that as a possibility.

So, my main question that remains is this:

I know that the USB port on the laptop comp doesn't have the fastest USB connect, I've gotten digital cameras, an Ipod, among other things that say their minimum specs are "for USB 2.0 Only" they just give me funny little popups about it and work a little slower - will the same be true of a CD-RW drive?Quote from: boredbody on April 15, 2008, 02:42:30 PM

It could be a problem. If you do get a USB CD-RW drive, get the fastest one ypou can get, and set the burning speed much below the max, to make sure that you don't get data corruption.even if cd-rw drives aren't backward compatible (which they probably are) you could get a usb 2.0 pcmcia card and plug it into that.Quote from: michaewlewis on April 15, 2008, 03:52:38 PM

Yes, older usb apps work with usb 2.0 drives, usb 2.0 apps work with older drives. It will be that you will have slower read/write speeds. that is all..... this applies for cd-rw's as well.

and onboard cd-rw drive might be better idea if the drive is hardly going to be removed from the computer. If you already have a cd or dvd burner (in another computer) you can buy a ide to usb converter on newegg for half the price of an external driveQuote from: michaewlewis on April 15, 2008, 05:21:13 PM

Thank you, everything so far has been really helpful. This is my first foray into CD burning so I don't but the above is another great idea I wouldn't have thought of, I could get a cheaper IDE drive for my desktop and with the converter cable use it on the laptop as well! Brilliant, thanks so much.

Solve : RAID Problems?

Answer»

Hi,

I have just built a system using a Gigabyte GA-73VM-S2 Motherboard using nVidia SATA Raid. I attached 2 500Gb Samsung SATA2 drives, downloaded the SATA Raid drivers for Vista from nVidia and created a Mirrored Raid array with them, then installed Windows Vista Business.

The install appeared to go OK, I was downloading Windows updates when the machine froze. I had to reboot the PC twice before it came back on again, when it did, an error message popped up in the system TRAY along the LINES of "SATA Raid write error disk 0.2". This error flashed up a few times, so using the nVidia Raid software installed from the motherboard cd, I attempted to rebuild the array. This completed without any problems, but then the PC froze again.

This time, during bootup, it stopped on "DETECTING Array", not discovering the array and not booting any further than this. Previously at this point, a "Healthy" array had been detected, then I was given the option to press F10 for the Raid options. I then powered the PC off, then on again, and when it reached the "Detecting Array" stage, the array flashed red showing the 2 disks as a degraded array.

I then deleted the array, then re-created it and re-installed Vista. At the first point that Vista rebooted, the boot up stopped and froze, DISPLAYING "Detecting Array" but getting no further.

Can anyone help with this? I have installed Raid arrays previously using XP and Server 2003 without any problems - they have always just worked before. My initial thoughts are a faulty disk.

Thanks

Nickim leaning towards a faulty disk. try installing vista seperately on both of them. see if one or both harddrives fail the installation.I downloaded HUtil from Samsung's website and ran it on both disks. Straight away it found multiple errors on one of the disks. I took it back to my supplier, who tested it, and also found errors, and replaced it for me.

I have now re-created the array using my replacement disk, re-installed Windows and everything appears to be working fine.

Thanks for your help.

It sounds like your hdd ribbon drive cable is not plugged into the board properly. If it was booting from hard drive c before and now FAILS to see it. Maybe the cable is in backwards or the power cable is not plugged in the drive or board.

Because XP is designed not to work if enough hardware is changed. I believe it's an anti-piracy feature.

Quote from: Dave666 on January 13, 2008, 04:04:02 PM

No. The drive will always be detectable, XP just wont be able to load properly. It will crash during the load if inserted into a computer with different hardware. Thanks alot...Yes it is recognized by Bios, just keeps crashing as you said, starting up then restarting....
I was wondering, the CPU is a celeron 1GHz Tualatin, and the MOTHER board is an ATX CM 33 TL SKT 370 DFI,...How much RAM can i put in,just 512 MBs??
Thanks1 gbThanksIt is crashing because the XP install was from another machine.
XP is not supposed to be moved from one machine to another...again this is by design. Thanks alot! I see now. I guess there is no way aroud it?
So now when i hook up the hard drive,i guess i put in the windows CD then take it from there?
Or follow my suggestion from above on a repair install of XP...

why are you placing your CPU fan on the 12 volt rail and not onto the mobo CPU fan header?Well, my fan blows air over a heatsink which is on my CPU, it isn't right on top of it like most CPU FANS. i think it is on the 12 volt rail. not exactly sure though. I also think the that 512mb 8800GTS isn't worth $100 more, but it wont fit anyway so no argument there.

Solve : Monitor goes blank: Any suggestions??

OK, so I was told that the monitor on this computer I got was the problem. I checked it and the monitor works fine when I hook it up to my own tower. Its the tower it came with thats a problem. When I hook up the monitor the screen goes blank, so I DISCONNECT it and it says the usual: No SIGNAL, check video cable. I was told it coluld be the video card but IM having trouble figuring out wahts up. Im kinda new at this. Can anyone help, please? What Windows version?
Go to Device Manager, and see, if there are any yellow "?", or "!" marks there.Does it have a video card and integrated video, or one or the other? If it is a bad card, you should be able to hook it up to the integrated video and boot into the bios. Then you should set the video to EITHER auto or onboard. Save your settings and reboot. now you should be able to boot into windows with video. If you don't have a video card, you will have to buy one, or borrow one from someone. Then you would hook your monitor to the video card and boot to the bios. Then set the video to auto or PCI. Save your settings and reboot. Keep in mind that without the drivers you will have very low resolution and poor color. But at least then you would know that it is the integrated video that puked on you.Hey Broni,no can do if he has no video!Quote

Solve : Please give the detailed reply about the symptoms of having bad capacitors.?

Answer»

Dear Friends,
Please inform me the symptoms of a computer if its mainboard having bad capacitors. Thank you very much.Welcome to the CH forums.

Think about any problem which can occur on any piece of hardware and "bad" capacitors can CAUSE it.

Following is an extract from this site and there is LOTS more info on the WWW.

Quote from: Wikipedia

Common problems caused by bad capacitors:
* Not turning on all the time; having to hit reset or try turning the computer on again
* Instabilities (hangs, BSODs, kernel panics, etc.), especially when symptoms get progressively more frequent over time
* CPU core voltage or other system voltages fluctuating or going out of range, possibly with an increase in CPU temperature as the core voltage rises
* Memory errors, especially ones that get more frequent with time
* Spontaneous reboots
* In case of on-board video cards, unstable image in some video modes
* Failing to complete the POST, or rebooting before it is completed
* Never starting the POST; fans spin but the system appears dead

Good luck.

as for physical symptoms of a bad CAPACITOR, you may notice any of the following...

1. burnt - the wrapping around the capacitor may appear slightly burnt or completely charred.

2. leaking - the dielectric within the capacitor may possibly be leaking out.

3. impregnated - rather then the usual cylindrical shape, the impregnated capacitor will appear to be bulging, most often from the sides and from the top. impregnated capacitors, although harder to spot, are the early WARNING signs of a failing capacitor. take note that all cylindrical type capacitors have a flat top, if it is even slightly rounded, then it is impregnated.

Dear Friends,
Thank you for your replies. Thank you.
homer,

Is that a Dell board with the buldged capacitors? i dont know who manufactured the motherboards. are dells NOTORIOUS for bad caps?Yes, my son has a Dell GX270 Opti Plex. It was acting all haywire, doing this and doing that, shutting down, you name it, it was doing it.

Opened the case looked at the MB it had more swollen capacitors and leaking ones than not.

I contacted Dell, it was a big enough problem on that particular model, they sent a replacement motherboard free of charge, even a box and prepaid shipping to return the defective one.

He lucked out there.

Solve : Keyboard Problem?

I have a very strange problem. I had a problem with my DVD drive and someone on a forum told me to uninstall my IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers (it auto reinstalls once i REBOOT). Now the good news: If fixed my DVD drive. Bad news: my KEYBOARD won't work. All the other USB devices work (its a USB keyboard). I know for sure that the keyboard works because i tried it on my laptop. It doesn't come with a driver and the manual says it should work by just plugging it in (MADE by Microsoft). I am baffled by this problem and have been typing USING the On-Screen Keyboard for a month and its really annoying .
Any help would be appreciated, Thanks in advance.Try using the same procedure you did on the IDE controller on every USB root and hub in device manager...right click/uninstall or remove.

Pure coincidence. I tried that uninstalling and installing the hubs and controllers but the keyboard still doesn't workIf the keyboard works on another machine but not that one then the USB slot may be burned out...
Is it on the front or rear of the machine ? ?I have 4 USB ports, 2 in the back and 2 in the front. I plugged the keyboard into all of them but it still doesn't work. Solve : Is it better to use a ATI graphics card than Nvidia in computer with AMD CPU??

I was recently told that Nvidia graphics card preforms better when used with a Intel processor than if it would be used with a AMD processor. Is this true? If this statement is true, is the performance difference so big that it is best to always use ATI graphics cards in COMPUTERS with AMD processor?

The reason I wonder this is that I am thinking of buying a better graphics card for my computer. The computer has a AMD processor and a ATI graphics card. I had in MIND to buy a card from Nvidia because I have had some TROUBLE with my present graphics card. But the statement above ha made me uncertain.I wouldn't put much credence in this statement...if it were true they would only be selling cards to 1/2 the market...
Sounds fishy to me.i would say dont go with a new Nvida Graphics card but instead go with a ATI Graphics Card, just to be safe....They are interchangeable. I had an nVidia in my AMD based system for quite some time and it worked wonderful i am planning on getting a new nVidia card to replace my current ATI. Anyone who says otherwise does not know what they are talking about.Whoever told you that is utterly wrong.
There are no two ways about it, that's complete rubbish.i have an thlon right now and i have an 8600 GT and have had absolutely no problem with any compatibility issues, actually no problems at all. Makes absolutely no difference what so ever. Get what you like.yes wat ever floats ur boat, and wat ever is more affordable to u.I am convinced.

Your replies makes it impossible for me to draw any other conclusion than there is no connection between the combination of CPU- and GPU-brand and performance.

This was exactly what I wanted to hear. Thank you all for the help.

Solve : Dell XPS 400?

Answer»

I keep FINDING people on the Net having an issue with the DELL XPS 400. MAINLY because it has only USB ports and no legacy device support. So, how do you fix a computer with only USB ports, if the USB ports do not work. All indications are that it is a software issue like a DRIVER vs. a hardware issue like blown caps.

Thanks. When did they stop working? What do you see in device manager? Also what version of windows are you RUNNING?

Solve : onspeed mobo?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I picked up a motherboard at my local Goodwill store for $2.50 still in the original box. Only problem is it came with no docs or software. Usually this is no problem because I can always google it and find docs and drivers. Well, this time it is a no go. I cannot find any INFO on this board! It is an Onspeed board model # U-631 with a socket 370 and a SIS chipset. One chip is marked 620, the other is marked 5595. It has an Award Bios. The lable on the bios is marked PCI/PNP 686 211343166 It has 2 ISA slots, 3 PCI slots, 3 DIMM slots, and it looks like there is another way to hook up the power right next to the standard 20 PIN plugin. Everything on the board is copyright 1998. Also everything that would be on the back pane is set up to be hooked up with ribbon connectors to the mobo and mounted the way you would mount a sound/video card. It did come with all of the cables/ribbons and connectors. The only thing on the back pane is an old style keyboard connector. Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.Well if you have all of your PARTS you could attempt to hook it up and try to let device manager install everything, but that's just me.Yes I have all the parts and I can locate drivers for the chipset and audio and video. I guess I should clarify that I am looking for a manual or info as to what processor speed it supports and what all the jumper settings are for and also what memory speed it supports. Thank you for your help.If the board has the FCC # on it you can Try This...Quote from: david68 on March 15, 2008, 08:35:06 PM

It is an Onspeed board model # U-631
Are you absolutely sure about that? Google yields nothing for a such a brand name or model for motherboards.Yes I am sure about the make and model. It was in the original box with the make and model#. And the warranty sticker on the back of the board matches the info on the box. Also the Onspeed name is silk screened on the back of the motherboard.I also looked for the FCC #. I cannot find it anywhere on the board.Hey guys, turns out that this board is actually a Jetway J-620BF. I had to get creative in my search to find it. Looked for SIS 620/5595 chipset based mobo's with a 370 socket. What made it not too difficult was the fact that the socket is right in the very corner of the board. The I compared photos of the boards and lo and behold, found an exact match! The layout of all the components and jumpers are the same. Then I was able to find a manual for it. Could this be a rebranded board of a now defunct manufacturer? Thanks for your help.

Solve : Laptop dead!?

Answer»

We have a Toshiba P200 laptop, which is not responding to anything. Earlier we tried installing an old printer, but that didn’t WORK. So we bought a new one and that seemed to work OK. Just after that the computer started doing a Norton antivirus scan. We tried to cancel that but it just hung there doing nothing. We went onto help files but they also hung there doing nothing. Basically the computer just refused to do anything, even shut down. Task MANAGER would not function; we only got an error message. All we get is a dark, blank screen. We have been unable to shut it down. The arrow curser is there and moves AROUND, but there’s nothing to click on. Please help!Try unplugging the ac cord and taking the battery out. This will shut the computer down. You should then be able to put the battery back in and START the computer.

Why it locked up is anyone's guess.Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / antivirus & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start happening / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

If you hold the POWER button down for 5-to-8 seconds, the computer will shut off. Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?

Solve : no access to optical drives after uninstall of xp programs?

Answer»

i was removing certain program components on windows xp. after removing sonic cd/dvd writer from windows xp pro media edition, i lost access to both of my dvd drives.

this error comes up after i uninstall, update etc., drivers in device manager

Windows cannot load the device DRIVER for this hardware. The driver may be CORRUPTED or missing. (Code 39)

i can toggle between different error depending on whether i allow the computer to automatically choose drivers that won't work, i choose different manufacturers that are not compatible with the software, etc.and others. i know the brand of one of my dvd drives (matshita sw-9585) which is an obsolete dvdram drive, and i was able to get the driver for this model, but when the update utility in device manager lets me point to the files in the executable i downloaded from the website, it asks for something like this, "$winnt$.inf", which is a file type that does not have a shared extension in the file folder containing the drivers i would be using.

is there ANYTHING i can do to regain access to my drives? i have a feeling that sonic cd/dvd has a larger role in allowing dvd drives to run on a computer, and that uninstalling it made me lose access to these drives. one minute, it was working fine and the next i lost all access to the drives!

i am able to boot from them if i change the order in the bios, and the bios still recognizes the drives!

here is some of the preliminary info from an everest report

Solve : "Floppy drive fail"?

Answer»

When I try to start computer it just stops with message "floppy drive fail". Replaced floppy drive with brand new one, put in new cables, reversed all connections, been into Bios, all to no avail. Does not matter what disk in drive, or no disk at all. Any ideas?Welcome to the CH forums.

Having done all the correct things it comes down to a MOTHERBOARD failure.

Here is the relevant CH reference.

I suspect that Dusty is right. Sounds like the floppy controller may have died.
You MIGHT try telling the bios there is no floppy drive. That might get you going (minus the floppy of course.)Check to make sure the cable is inserted properly in the mother board.
Check also to make sure there is a power connector to the floppy.
Make sure there are no bent pins on the floppy.
Check bios and make sure floppy dis controller is enabled.
make sure the cable is'nt around the wrong way.
Often it is just something small like the above.
