Solve : If I had to choose between CPU's, which??

Answer»

well thats WAY bttr than mine but i still would consider an upgrade on ur CPU, perhaps a Pentium D or CORE 2 Dou proccesor those are top-of-the-line proccessors i highly reccommend them.well, it all depends on what you are going to do with the computerI have a DVD burner, CD burner, that are used quite a bit.

NET browsing, Google Earth, a little game playing, and I mean only a little. Considering that then I would go with the AMDJust for the sake of asking, not being argumentative.

Why?AMD is well known in Graphics Proccessing and since u do Google Earth u'll need an upgrade.Quote from: macdad- on March 14, 2008, 08:40:27 PM

AMD is well known in Graphics Proccessing and since u do Google Earth u'll need an upgrade.

This is balderdash at best... the CPU's are so close in specs i would make a financial decision at this point.Which Pentium 4 CPU are you looking at getting?
If it's socket 478 remember you won't need to change your board, whereas the AMD will REQUIRE a board change too.
Also, you may want to consider a graphics card if you don't currently have a dedicated one, it would help with your games and Google Earth.I was looking at a socket 775, 3.4GHz Prescott, SL7Z7 Pentium 4. 800MHz bus speed/2048KB L2 cache size for their bus speed and cache size improvement over my socket 478, P4, 3.06 mentioed above. I will have to purchase a 775 board though. But thats OK. The Pentium 4's seem to be easier to COME up with, without having to take out a loan.

I do already have a socket 754, AMD Athlon 64, Venice core, L2 cache 512KB/ HyperTransport, with speeds up to 800 MHz
(ADA3200AIO4BX) on a Biostar board with a GB of memory on it too. This is what I was looking to go up the 1KB cache size with the ADA3400AEP5AP Clawhammer core processor.

And I have a bare PC Chips 754 board as well, they ( the Biostar and PC Chips) both will max with the AMD3700.

I do run a Nvidia FX6200 256MB VGA card on my 478 board.from personal experience i would say earlier Intel would be better than the earlier AMD.
but i would suggest going to a AMD Athlon 64 X2 2GHz or higher if you want bang for the buck and if you go AM2 socket those motherboards are rather inexpensive.I think in that case that you'll see a better performance increase with the P4 than the AMD, as you're increasing the bus speed, clock speed and cache size compared to your older P4, whereas upgrading the Athlon will mean a slightly higher clock speed and a small cache increase.
775 boards are relatively inexpensive, and many will offer the upgrade path to Intel's newer CPUs too, without necessarily requiring NEW RAM.I understand, I have seen some Intel socket 775 boards that have 1600/1333/1066/800 MHz FSB.

Thanks,

Solve : Computer freeze and crash; xp or vista can not be reinstalled only win98 & linux?

Answer»

Big problems.
My computer suddenly froze when many apps were RUNNING. I think it was itunes and some mapping program called mapman.

the computer is a fairly new (200609) zepto znote 6615wd
It has a core duo intel processor and 1gb ram

The computer was forced turned off with the on/off button

After this it would not start xp in safe mode, last working config. or any other choice

A reinstallation of xp or vista did not work, it started the ROW of installing in bottom but suddenly stopped and went dead.

A computer guy I know (I am not) had a look and found that hardrive, ram and other hardware was running fine. He managed to install linux, but still no xp.

I then gave it to a local shop to have a look at. They TRIED starting it with an external harddrive hooked up and also exchanged the ram. No result except that they managed to install WIN 98.

So now I am sitting with an erased hardrive and WIN98 on my computer. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and how I can adress it?

regards from a computer fool

Solve : Processor installation?

Answer»

Why is everyone so negitive on this subject? It is the same as a desktop I would think. All I want to do is pull the "Cover off"I'm not taking the screen off or doing anything else. I just want to see the Mother Board..... But I want to see it on the side where the processor is. If it on the top well maybe I need to take out 4 screws...If it's on the bottom maybe I need to take them all out.... or maybe there are componets on one side only. These are the questions I'm looking for an answer to. I don't plan on disassemblying anything. I just want to access the Mother Board the easiest way possible. For right now I'm only looking. So all this stuff about being soldered and stuff doesn't matter. I just want to look at it. Sorry if I sound tight but all I've gotten is answers that don't pertain to my question. Sorry. LorenzBy starting a new Topic no one will be able to follow the info you have provided so far without a little digging.

And i don't neccessarily see it as being negative advice...just realistic.
You have a machine that's under warranty....opening it makes that warranty useless.
If there is a problem with the CPU that's in there they will replace it for Free.
If you simply want some experience on taking apart laptops and swapping processors an older machine that doesn't cost a ton of money might be a better approach.what is the reason to look inside when they will change it out for free? There's nothing wrong with the old processor. I am just going to upgrade it to a faster processor and more memory. Just an upgrade. Nothing to do with the warrany. They will not upgraade it.there is no warranty if youdo it yourself, if you have computer ppldo it then it willcome with a mwarranty most of the timeQuote from: Bmx485 on March 16, 2008, 02:08:40 PM

There's nothing wrong with the old processor. I am just going to upgrade it to a faster processor and more memory. Just an upgrade. Nothing to do with the warrany. They will not upgraade it.

Have you researched that MBoard to see if in fact it will take a newer CPU ? ?I will have to AGREE with the rest here. If it is under warranty, I would leave it alone unless there is some specific reason you need to upgrade the processor. Ram is usually mush easier to do. At least on my Dell Inspiron 9400 there is a cover that you take off that espouses the memory modules.

That said, I did take apart my son's old Toshiba laptop to try to fix the power plug and install a new keyboard. It was no easy task. (if it would have been a more usable laptop, I would have sent it in to have the WORK done) Even replacing the keyboard was a challenge.

If I have any advice it is to go SLOWLY. Often there are small cables that need to be disconnected from a component before you can continue. Before unhooking the cable, make sure you can get the cable connected again. This sounds like silly advice, but the cable on the Toshiba keyboard I mentioned above was a BEAR to hook up again. The problem was it was small, I had very little extra ROOM or cable to work with, and the cable was not stiff on the end. It was like a very small ide cable with nothing to hold onto to reinsert it. Kind of like trying to push a wet noodle through a keyhole with your hands tied behind your back.

Another suggestion is to make a map of what goes where as your taking it apart. Paper and pencil will do, but a digital camera will also help.

Good Luck!

desktops are power hogs, but at least you can get in them, for the most part, and have room to work -- laptops don't leave a lot of room for error. I upgraded RAM in one I had about twenty years ago, so it didn't have a CD drive and an ethernet port and a phone jack and USB ports and wireless and all the other stuff we've got crammed into these animals, now.

If you're capable and careful and stay organized, you should be able to do it.

Solve : Blank Media?

Answer»

I was looking to buy a DVD/CD BURNER and for Christmas a friend of MINE bought me DISKS their Memorex DVD-R 16X I know the - means I cant write over the CD. I was wondering if the disks you buy has to match the media you buy. I mean do I have to buy a Memorex burner to get theses disks to burn DVD's and does the 16X have something to do with the burner I have to buy?Quote

do I have to buy a Memorex burner
No.
DVD-R can be burned in both DVD-R, and DVD+R drives.
16x is a burning speed (most popular, I guess).well I put it in my SONY Vaio burner at my friends house it wont even read the disk its a 2002 tho.Is it DVD burner?I wouldn't base my selection of a DVD burner on the blanks i have...
Newegg has a dual layer DVD burner for 40 bucks shipped.
Lite-On.
I recommend it.

As far as blank media is concerned, whenever i buy/test a new burner i borrow/buy one blank from everyone i know covering most BRAND names and some generics...
I then do a test burn with all formats; a music file; a video clip; and a large DATA file.
This way i know which ones that burner likes the most.

Solve : Something wrong with my friend's computer?

Answer» WELL I have no idea what it might be but as fast as he tries to start the computer, something is starting to do a loud noise sounding like one of those smoke detectors you have on your roof.

Does the computer work fine otherwise?I would suggest, removing the side of the case and listening to each fan in TURN. I'm sure then you will locate the noise. Let us know when you have located the sound. Nah it's not a fansound, more like "peeeeeeeeeeeep", and the hting is he can't start the computer whatsoever. When you say he cannot start the computer, are you saying NONE of the fans are spinning. If they are spinning, how far does the computer get to booting into windows. Do you get anything on the monitor? Is this a bios beep?

Also, what makes you think its the graphics card?Alright, answers :

1.The fans are not spinning
2.The computer doesn't show anything on the monitor
3.Don't think it's a bios beep, sounds bit like a fire alarm. Not that loud though.Check the power supply. It may have gone out.More specificly what do you want me to check the powersupply for? any special SIGNS or something ?Power supplies are not meant to be user or even computer tech serviceable.

You'll have to SWAP it out with another known working power supply from another computer and see if it works then.So nothing on your computer is working at all, apart from this loud noise? If your cpu fan isnt spinning, then its down to the psu, motherboard, or the heatsink fan. what where you doing prior to this happening. Loose RAM is another possibility...
Until we know exactly what he's been doing inside the machine it's just guesswork.

Solve : Computer hang-ups?

Answer»

i bought an Asus EN8600GT Silent video card with 256mb of DDR3RAM on it, and installed it in my computer along with another Gb of RAM, and a new Power supply. The video card blowed big time, hung up for two or three seconds, and would not run my games worth a flip. I had a ATI Radeon 1700SE w/528mb of ram in there, and have since put it back in my computer. But My game still acts quarky! My ram is composed of 2 sticks of 1 Gb, and 2 - 528Mb sticks. One of the gigabyte sticks is a Corsair, and the other is Samsung. Could this be an issue. The guy at the electronics store said it didn't matter.
I've done all the cleaning, and spyware checking, defraging, etc..looked at startup processes. Nothing has changed since before I done the upgrade. Any ideas?are you removing the OLD video drivers before installing new ones?Remove one of your ram sticks to see if it helps. Also do what is suggested above. Remove the driver before installing the latest one.I did uninstall the ASUS driver / control panel PACKAGE. I reinstalled ATI's, but I am still getting this strange pause at times, like when I'm beginning to type in a text block like this one, or using the wheel on my mouse to scroll down a page.Frankie, I did think about that...which one should I take out, the new one (1Gb Corsair) or a 512Mb?Was the computer running ok before you tried to INSTALL that GRAPHICS card? If so try doing a system restore.Yes, I had some problems prior to that when it lost the keyboard, and I done a complete restore, after that everything was ok. I have since remove the new card and reinstalled my old one. The memory is the only thing that I can think of that is the issue. The MB specs say it will support 4Gb of ram.Remove one stick of ram and see how the computer goes. If you still get problems i would suggest you do a system restore. Could be that graphics card driver has upset your system and system restore would solve this. Ok...I'll let you know Hey Frankie...It seems OK, but tell me why taking one stick out would help? Also, is low density ram better than high density. By system restore i don't mean reinstall windows. I mean the system restore in accessories. Taking your computer back in time to when all was ok. Hope you know what i mean Yeah, I knew what you meant. What about my other questions.Quote from: knarlybill on January 13, 2008, 07:57:56 AM

Hey Frankie...It seems OK, but tell me why taking one stick out would help? Also, is low density ram better than high density.

Low density modules have 100% compatibility with ALL systems and ALL chipsets. So i would say low is better.

What ram do you have EXACTLY? Did you check to see if your board supports the ram you bought. What is your motherboard?

Solve : cd rom disappeared from my computer after reformatting?

Answer»

Okay, thank you, I will give that a try but to be honest although I don't know anything about computers I feel the odds of that being the cause quite slim compared to it being a hardware (software?) problem giving that they were both working fine before I upgraded.

But then I could be totally WRONG!Is it only audio CDS they wont play? What program are you using to play the CDs?Hiya,

Yes, only audio CD's won't play. I assume they would OPEN in windows MEDIA player. What happens if you open Windows Media Player and try to play the CDs from there?Hiya,

Thanks for the reply. It doesn't do anything...it doesn't acknowledge the cd being there.I'm confused here, so just to clear one thing up. Can you tell me is this a cdrom drive or a dvd drive we are talking about here? Does it say its a dvd rw on the front of the drive. Also is it only music cd that don't work. Software disks work fine do they?

Solve : need help researching laptops!?

Answer»

Laptops, the happiness they bring, the love they ensue, the hatred we feel when they break...

Well its time for me to get a new one, and I wanted it to potentially run certain games, such as World of Warcraft + maybe Dawn of War and so on as SMOOTH as it can. On top of that, also packing up a decent battery life. I was wondering if any had any suggestions on a gaming laptop that had a decent battery life. Thanks for the input! What's your BUDGET?
And doe sit have to be a laptop?

Currently I do have a desktop, just built it a few months ago, runs great and happy. However, I shall be graduating soon and the graduation gift is "laptop" to whatever I wish for. I suppose my "potential" budget would have to be between 1500 to 2200 dollars, also I might have a job where I am traveling a decent amount so was looking for a laptop with a decent amount of battery life, along with the gamer in me wanting to chill sometimes Unfortunatly, A laptop for gaming and long battery life don't go together

I am currently using a Dell Inspiron with a Intel(R) CPU T2600 @ 2.16GHz and a GeForce Go 7800 graphics card and 2 gigs of ram. It also has a 17 in. wide screen monitor. The battery life stinks. And just for comparison, I have a desktop with about the same specs that will run CIRCLES around the laptop.

A separate video card is a must. The fastest one they make for laptops if possible. I did a quick search and found a couple in your price range but I am not sure I should post the links here?

I don't see why not? Does the terms and conditions say you cannot link to products to these threads?Dell has a couple. From what I have heard, the XPS is a gaming lalptop and is pretty good, although I have also heard you pay a lot for the fancy case.

I am not sure if it is ok to post links here or not, but If you do a search on gaming laptops, you will find a lot of sites.Any laptop is by nature going to LACK in gaming skills...they haven't built one yet that will convince me otherwise....
If you find one to challenge this supposition just ship it to me for 3 months of testing.

Solve : Monitor colors look horrible?

Answer»

I had onboard video and then bought a radeon x1650. After I installed it, my MONITOR colors looked horrible (before it was almost perfect, just not bright enough). I used the drivers from ati and then the manufacturer, tried adjusting in catalyst and even with the buttons on the monitor, i couldn't get it to look anywhere close to before the x1650. i uninstalled the x1650, and it still looks like it did with it no matter what i try.

how do i get it looking like before or BETTER? my monitor is a NEC multsync 70 and im USING windows xp. below are some before and after screenshots.

Solve : Hard drive problem...missing hal.dll file?

Answer»

I've alraedy performed a search here for this particular PROBLEM, here on this FORUM and have tried the information listed on the FAQ page which involves copying the file from the Operating System CD to the directory of the hard drive.

Here's the problem:

I can't expand the file because I have no access to the Windows directory on the drive in question.

If I do a DIR of the C: drive, I get the following error: An error occurred during directory enumeration.

When trying to do a repair of the os, there is no option to select a windows installation.

The initial error that comes up after reboot is that there may be a problem with the hard drive...and to HIT any key to continue. That's when I get the hal.dll error. The error also tells me the path to the file is as follows: /system32/hal.dll. Shouldn't it be more along the line of windows/system32/hal.dll?

Anyway...this is what I have tried:

1. Chkdsk /r and it never fully completes, but returns a message that there may be a problem with the hard drive. It gets about 45% through before it returns this error message.

2. I've also tried fixboot and fixmbr followed by chkdsk /p /r, however...after the chkdsk...I'm right back to where I started...receiving the same errors on boot.

I'm beginning to think the drive is TOAST, but if anyone here has any further recommendations...I'm all ears.

Thanks in advance...
-Steve

Update...

Sorry everyone...but I just did a diagnostics on this drive using PowerMax...seems the drive is toast. I should've done this earlier...WOULD have saved me a whole lot of aggravation.

Thanks for taking a look, though.Well you took the correct steps...sorry 'bout the drive. It's okay...

Thanks for the reply. The owner of said hard drive has decided to buy a new computer...as opposed to just repairing or replacing the hard drive...go figure.Sorry i can't help in that department...
I've learned one thing in doing this all these years..."give the people what they want"...

Solve : Weird sound in the background?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm HEARING a weird sound in the background when I have my headset on - It sounds like gas leaking, or bees buzzing around my head, or a big fan gone wrong. It goes up when I'm playing a game.

I only noticed it recently, after switching to a new Nvidia 8800GT Card. I have on-board sound (Specs below), and a teammate suggested it was from bad/low power. So I bought a new power supply. Same THING, only the problem is more obvious when not gaming.

I'm thinking it's the on-board sound, but any solution to this would be awesome.

Solve : Safe to Removing old cd drive and not replacie it??

Answer»

Compac Presario 6000 series, WINDOWS xp, 6 years old. Works very well
I banged the cd drive with my knee and now the drive door is very hard to close (or open.) I disabled the drive, as I still have an external cd/dvd player burner. Even with the drive disabled, the drive is still trying to do something, either open/close, etc and is making a annoying clicking sound.
Is is safe for the rest of the computer operations to simply open up the computer, following the directions for taking out the drive, unplugging what needs to be unplugged and not replacing it. Or how about just unplugging the things that are plugged in and leave the drive in place to keep the dust out?
WOULD so much love to hear some advice.
Oh, I don't want to invest any more money in this computer as hopefully I will be switching to a laptop when the who shebang GOES.
Thanks Disconnecting the IDE ribbon cable and power plug will do fine...
Leaving it in place to keep dust out was a good idea on your part.Yeah, it really shouldn't have an impact on the system itself. Some games might need to be reinstalled because they aren't smart ENOUGH to look in another CD drive for their disc. Alternatively, after disconnecting the old drive, you could set the external drive's letter to the same letter. This should stop programs from getting confused. You could take the external drive apart, and use that in your machine. Aw, bless your hearts for answering. I will give it a go. Thank you dearies. Solve : Is my Video Card about to die??

Answer»

I have a GeForce 4 TI 4200 (AGP 8X)

Over the last month or so, I've occasionally noticed wrong-colored pixels when I visit websites, or sometimes when I'm looking through files with Windows Explorer. For example, there would be a couple red pixels in a letter in this forum post, or a line of green across an otherwise white screen. These never appear in the same place, and move as the letter in question would move, leading me to believe that it is NOT my monitor's problem.

Today, it got considerably worse. I loaded up Warcraft III, and black dots were flickering across the main screen. Think TV static, but only about 50 or so of these dots, and the rest of the image is fine.

What I THINK is happening is that my VIDEO card is about to die. I've tried inspecting the card itself (nothing wrong) and re-installing my drivers (didn't help). Is there anything I can do to fix this short of replacing the card, and how much TIME do I likely have before it gives up the ghost?

Thanks for your help.In my experience they can go on like this for months and months without degrading any further or can completely fail in a week.
When you say you inspected the card what do you mean ? ?
Is the fan operating properly ?
Did you remove it CLEAN the contacts and re-seat it ?

The only real way to diagnose if it's the card is to swap it into a known working machine and install the drivers...if it does the same thing then it's the card.

Good Luck.

P.S. Sometimes i have just replaced the fan and extended the LIFE of the card somewhat...best thing to do in this case is remove the fan and take it with you to a computer store to match up the size etc. What I mean by 'inspected the card' is that nothing soldered on was in danger of coming off, there wasn't gunk in either the card slot or the monitor plug, and the fan spun.

Thanks for the advice. I suppose I'd best ORDER a new card while I can still see my display. What about dust on the fan blades and heatsink of the video card? Did you check that and clean if needed?

Solve : Could I have a bad network card??

Answer»

I am having a problem with my laptop connecting to the internet. I lose the connection after a few minutes and get time out messages. Then it will come back on for a few minutes and then the process repeats.

I tried going to the c PROMPT and reset Winsock (netsh Winsock reset) and no luck. The computer I am using now is connected wirelessly to the network so I THINK I can assume that the router is working since I am able to send this post. So here is the information about my computer:

GATEWAY CX200X laptop
Windows XP SP2 Tablet
Pentium M 1.73GHz
1394 Net Adapter
Bluetooth LAN access server driver
Broadcom Netlink Gigabit Ethernet
Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG Network ConnectionThe laptop is connected via wireless as well?Does this connection probelm occur only when you have a wired connection to your router?
If a wireless connection to the same router has no problems, then you can probably safefly rule out the internet connection being at fault.

Try this with your wired connection setup,

Open a command prompt and type

ping -t google.com

this will create a continuous ping which will show as 'timed out' at any point when a connection isn't present.
Whilst this ping is running, try moving the network cable in it's socket on the laptop, on the router, and also just wiggle it around in general. If you see the ping timing out any particular point while you are doing this, then you have probably found your problem.

If that doesn't help, try the following when the connection is down,

Open the command prompt and type

ipconfig /release

then,

ipconfig /renew

then,

ipconfig /all

Post the results of the ipconfig /allSorry I didn't make this clear first. Yes, I am using a wireless connection. I am posting this from the laptop that is having problems demonstrating that it does work sometimes. It's just very unreliable.Check for a driver update for the wireless netcard.
If one exist it should be available from the website of the laptop manufacturer. The new drivers seem to have fixed the problem. Thanks, Deerpark! The title of the TOPIC made me chuckle...i've got 4 or 5 of them lying around and your welcome to them...

Well, I lied. It's not fixed. I just had a LONG run of no problems. I'm now on another computer. *sigh* LOL Patio! (when I'm not swearing at my computer)

Solve : Reformatting my HD?

Answer»

I would like to reformat my HD but am having trouble getting my computer to boot from my Windows XP CD.
On Startup I press F11 and GET into a blue screen that says "Select First Boot DEVICE" I navigate down from Floppy to the selection CD/DVD but there is no option to confirm my new selection. The only choices are:
[Up/Dn] Select [RETURN] Boot [ESC] cancel. When I press [RETURN] the computer simply returns to the standard boot sequence and Windows comes on. If I press [ESC] then the entire operation is cancelled and the computer again returns to the standard boot sequence. I have a custom made computer: American Megatrends 7/10/2002, Amibios(c) 2001, AMD XP 1900, 1.6GHZ with 1MB RAM.
Thank you for any help you can provide. You can email me directly at mcmillan_md AT sbcglobal DOT net

In most BIOS's the key you want is NORMALLY F10 to "save changes and Exit"...
It should say this at the bottom of the screen.

NOTE the machine will automatically re-boot with the changes intact.

MBoard Slave Master

This is how the RIBBON cable should be laid out.
The jumpers will be next to where the power plug goes into the drive.
The drive will have a diagram designating the settings.

Keep both the CD drives on the same channel.

You could also add a second HDD using the same layout.

Solve : Memory size discrepancy?

Answer»

Hi all.

Curious... the computer I built has 1G of memory. It shows up in the BIOS as the 1G (or 1024) installed, but says 960 useable. Why is that?

I've also noticed this same type of discrepancy on my laptop. When I purchased it, it was supposed to have 1G installed, but only says there is 766MB.

Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks The OS is probably using the rest of it. I have 256MB of RAM and yet my OS says it has 222MB RAM. That or the memory is corrupt.

-- edit --

You can run a memory test with memtest86 to see if the memory is corrupt.

Download it here: http://www.memtest86.com/
Tutorial: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.htmlI'm guessing the missing RAM is being used by onboard graphic cards. (I.e. a graphic card that is integrated in motherboard.) These usually take a portion of the main system RAM to use as video RAM.
If you post system specifications on the computers in question (or failing that brand name and MODEL numbers) we can tell you whether you've got onboard graphic cards.Quote from: Ravenne on January 10, 2008, 03:50:57 PM

Hi all.

Curious... the computer I built has 1G of memory. It shows up in the BIOS as the 1G (or 1024) installed, but says 960 useable. Why is that?

1024 - 960 = 64. This indicates your onboard video USES 64MB of your system RAM for video. Windows does not include that in the amount of system memory it reports in System Properties. And, most likely, it's the same thing with your laptop except it's allocating more memory to video.

For proof, run dxdiag (Start, Run, and enter dxdiag), select the Display tab, and see how much video memory is shown there.
The laptop;
Acer ASPIRE 5100
AMD Turion 64 MK-36 2GHz
766 MB
Windows Vista Home Premium

I know Vista is a resource hog, so I guess it makes sense to me now that it doesn't report the full 1G.
I just learned that Vista has a memory diagnostic tool (learn something new everyday ). I ran it for 2 passes on my laptop and 7 on my husband's. Both came up with no errors. Laptops only have integrated video, correct?

The other machine was built by me.

Motherboard is ASUS A8V-VM SE
AMD A64 3500+ 2.2Ghz
1G DDR SDRAM DDR400
Windows XP

I'm using the integrated video card, haven't added anything fancy to it.
I downloaded the Memtest program and am going to try it on this machine, just for giggles.

Thanks for your input everyone. It makes more sense to me now So both of them have integrated graphic cards... well there's your missing RAM. Like I said integrated graphic cards borrow a chunk of system RAM to use as video memory; this memory will not be reported by Windows because Windows has no access to it.
Like Soybean said, the integrated card on the desktop is using 64 mb and 258 is being used on the laptop. On a new laptop that is not uncommon.

The BIOS usually have a setting that lets you control the amount memory used by the graphics card. If you don't plan on using the computers for gaming you can reduce the amount of RAM reserved for the graphics card.Quote
I know Vista is a resource hog, so I guess it makes sense to me now that it doesn't report the full 1G.
It doesn't have anything to do with your OS. Others explained your "issue" pretty clearly. Well, when I mentioned Vista being a resource hog, I was talking about all of the pretty bells and whistles (transparent windows etc). I figured that's where the missing RAM is being used, to fuel all of that.
Or am I looking at this INCORRECTLY?
Is all that being used by the "missing RAM"?I thought, it was explained pretty well by previous posters, that you don't have any missing RAM.I know it's not "missing" (wrong choice of word perhaps ).
Since it's being used by on-board graphics, it's "in use".

If there is a way for me to find out if one is already in my computer......please give specific INSTRUCTIONS. Thank you so much.every computer has a video card. however, there are two types, integrated (built into the motherboard) or non-integrated (plugged into an expansion slot).

to tell WHETHER you have an integrated video card or not, look at the back of the computer. an integrated video card will be somewhere in the green rectangle in the picture i provided. a non-integrated video card will be in the red rectangle.

Solve : Building a Computer?

Answer»

I have recently put together a computer using old parts that i found. I have all the essentials and i hooked everything up and the system fan turns for about a second then stops, a light comes on on the motherboard and one LED light works, after that nothing HAPPENS. I dont know what is wrong, would this be a faulty CPU or power supply or what? Any help would be aprreciated.PSU is the first suspect...borrow another one of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there to SEE...
Thermal Compound is the second suspect...did you take apart the heatsink/fan combo from the CPU ? ?
If so TRAVEL to Arctic Silver's website for instructions on using it properly...available at computer stores everywhere.
MBoard standoffs would be the third suspect...they are small Brass posts that go between the MBoard and the case screw mounts and are there to prevent MBoard shorting out on the case...It depends on how you look at old todays compents are outdated cause there are new ones tommorow. I would see if you put enought paste on the CPU to see if its not over heating.Quote from: squall_01 on December 30, 2007, 03:18:04 PM

I have no idea what you meant but Thermal Paste was already suggested. Thanks for the advice, im pretty sure the power supply is good and i know the motherboard is on the STAND offs correctly. Most likely i just need more thermal paste of the CPU. Thank you very much! Arctic Silver's website has the most comprehensive instructions on doing this that i've seen...it's worth a visit as this is a critical step and needs to be done properly....it's not as simple as just gooping some on there and slapping it together. Solve : Hardrive probs.?

I recently put a PC GAME on my second hardrive to save space on the primary drive, No PROBLEM there, But when the game NEEDED to download a Auto- update I got an error message(Forgot what It said). So I reloaded It on the C drive and the game Auto-Updated fine. I am finding out that some software works improperly on my D or second drive. Why, And can I fix? I know someone will help me with this, you guys are awsome. SOUNDS to me like a bad HD, however, some programs do need to be customized if they are installed on a different drive.

what do you mean by "some software works improperly"? we need more specific details, that auto-update error message might be helpful as well.so it is only software that CONNECTS to the internet that works improperly?

Quote

I will have to download software and write down error message
that would be very nice, thank you.Simply point the DLoad to the proper drive/directory.
If it doesn't like this method then save it to disk and install from there.
It doesn't matter where you save it to as long as you point it to the proper directory when installing...

Solve : computer not booting (or even reaching BIOS)?

Answer»

So I'm working on an older computer, an HP well past its warranty. It has 512 megs of RAM, a P4, and GeForce Ti4600 or something similar (AGP slot). The computer has been working fine. A while back the DVD drive (IDE connector) had a disc break inside of it, messing up its gears and READER, so I bought a new drive and installed it. I also plugged in a RADEON 9800 and an additional 128 megs of RAM. I tried to turn the computer on, and all everything lights up, fans spin, I can hear hard drive, etc, but I get nothing from the monitor but an amber light. I put back the old video card that worked, removed the new RAM, but kept the new DVD drive in, (because even if something is goofy with that, the computer should at least be able to reach BIOS and begin to boot). I have checked the stupid stuff, i.e., making sure the monitor cable is properly plugged in to the video card, making sure the RAM is seated CORRECTLY, making sure all cables are plugged in, etc.

To summarize, the machine is in exactly the same state in which I started working on it, except it now has a new DVD drive plugged in. But where as it worked fine before, now it won't even start to boot.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this? pop out your CMOS battery (the only battery on the board) and wait 30 seconds, then pop it back in. do this while the computer is off and the power supply is shut down.Well, I tried popping out the battery like you suggested and no luck. I think the mobo may have gone *censored* up. Not sure why it would have, maybe there was a bad soldering job or something and I knocked something loose when I was poking around inside the case, that's really all I can think of at this point. Any additional suggestions would be appreciated. Okay you mite hav ESD something. First take out the RAM an see if you get any beeps from the mother board. If you dont hear any that MEANS the board is bad. If you do it mite be the RAM try useing a differnt one. If that doesn't work the CPU probably died.

Solve : CD ROM stuck?

Answer»

How do I remove a CD from a CD ROM drive that will not eject?you can try with a stretched out PAPER clip. look at the front for a small hole and push the paper clip in there. this is how to manually open the drive. if it still will not open, then you will need to open up your computer, remove your cd drive, and then disassemble it.There should be a small hole in the front, take a paper clip. BEND it straight and PUT it in the hole. The drive should open a little enough for you to grab an remove the disc. Try unpluging the power to it, and RECONNECT it see if that doesn't FIX it.Thanks that did work.

I have Win Xp sp2. I have a 60gb C: drive that I just re-formatted and it's working fine. I have a Maxtor 120gb hard drive that was in a modded xbox console. I don't know what exactly was done to the hard drive but I have installed it as a slave on my PC. When I BOOTED up xp, it recognized the new hard ware. The drivers are installed. When I go to disk drives in computer management, I can see the maxtor drive installed.

My problem is I can't see the new drive in disk manager or explorer to reformat it. The drive works fine when installed in the xbox but not in the pc.

Any ideas?Whats the harddrive type? Maxtor,Western Digtal.... Just shearch for the drive on google with format which ever drive and it should workIt's a maxtor DiamondMax 120GB HDD.

My problem isn't really formatting it, it's being able to see it in disk management. The only place it shows up is in Device Manager but I can't format it from there.DLoad and run the MaxBlast software from Here

I have a Maxtor 120gb hard drive that was in a modded xbox console.

the harddrive is most likely locked, as most xbox HD's are. did you place the HD in your xbox or did someone else?I was there when it was done but I really have no idea what he did to it. I do seem to remember something about locking it though....

How would I go about unlocking it?how did you format your HD? was is a soft-modded xbox or a hard-modded xbox?

P.S.

soft-mod = software mod
hard-mod = hardware mod. (modchip)It was a hard mod. I don't really remember/know what was done to it. I know we put it in the pc, formatted it and created 2 partitions. We also installed a few bits of software. The we put it in the xbox, I remember having to change the eeprom so when I put the xbox online microsoft wouldn't pickup that it had a new hard drive. Like I SAID I don't really know what was done to the drive, my buddy was doing all the software stuff while I was soildering the mod chip in, so I wasn't really paying attention. After it was all put together, we had to flash the bios and install the home brew OS to be able to read games from the hard drive.

I'm going to dig around on xbox-scene and see if I can find out how to unlock the drive.you will most likely need the boot disk you used to format the harddrive. the option to lock/unlock the harddrive should be on that.Try formatting the drive in dos mode, and set a partion for it..Quote from: barryd on December 29, 2007, 09:20:45 PM

Free Solution

Your Mileage MAY Vary...Thanks for the help guys. I've found something on the xbox-scene website. I think if I install the drive back in the xbox, I can use the hacked bios to unlock the drive. If that doesn't work, I'm going to try to get in touch with the guy that did all this and see if he can fix it.

I'll post back with the outcome.hey, there should be a tutorial on xbox-scene in the the origional xbox section about how to use your xbox hard drive in your pc. but if that doesnt work you could try using slayers-auto-evox-installer which will probably be able to unlock it if you have an evox dashboard/OS installed(IM not sure about other dashboards). You can get slayers from xbins but i think that version is corrupted. Your best bet is to get instructions how how to get it from the slayer origional website which can be located at: slayer.xbox-scene.com . Solve : Is my computer fried??

Answer»

Got the dreaded call at work today from my daughter. "Dad, I was chatting with my friend online and the computer just shut off"

She tried turning it back on and got a message that the computer overheated and I talked her through the reboot.

She finished chatting and when I came home from work, the screen was black (power save mode). I tried SIGNING on but nothing happened. The screen stayed black and the monitor was still acting in "sleep" mode.

I shut off the power for about 2 hours and tried turning it on again with no luck. Both fans are working and there are no beeping or other sounds. It was a little dusty but nothing really major. We've had problems with the computer overheating before and I took it from the cabinet in the desk and now it's on top next to the monitor. It's a Gateway with a Pent
ium 4 processer but that's pretty much all I know about computers. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Your motherboard is probably dead since you don't get any beeps. The way to tell is by takeing out your RAM and seeing if you dont get a beep. After you replace the bad board see if it still doesn't overheat. You mite need a bigger HEATSINK for it. Which AIDS in keeping the CPU at the reight tempaturesLooks like we may have GOTTEN lucky. A friend of mine came over (didn't know he fixed them for a living). He ripped it apart, cleaned out everything, put it back together (he had a bigger heatsink that he installed) and everything works BETTER than before. Not bad for a 6 pack.

Solve : Mixing IDE/SATA, Question?

Answer»

I made the mistake of thinking a COMPUTER had an IDE interface on its harddrive when it has a SATA interface. I meant to slave the new harddrive to the old one, and now I'm sitting here with a IDE harddrive that I'm unsure if I can take back. I'm INEXPERIENCED with computer assembly in general, and a virgin when it comes to slaving. Do I need to get a new SATA harddrive, or is there a way I can use this one? I feel very foolish right now. you should be able to still use the IDE drive, assuming your motherboard has IDE ports.Homer's correct. You can use both.
On most newer MBoards SATA takes priority so the IDE will automatically be a slave although you can make it bootable if need be.
So if your OS is already on the SATA you should be GOOD to go.

P.S. You may have to format the IDE before Windows will be able to use it. This can be done in DISK Management.
It will then show up as an additional drive D: for example and you can use it as a storage drive.I have an extension to this question. I would like to slave an IDE drive from an older computer that had power problems to a SATA drive but the cabling for the power side is not the same (4 pin versus ). Also there appears to be a slot on the board for a 40 pin connection but all the others are SATA. Are there adapters or is this a futile exercise? Or am i just missing an obvious solution or ??
Thanks,
Dandpmpe - welcome to the CH forums.

The 40-pin connector your mention may be for ide devices - what does your mobo manual say on the subject?

Ide to Sata and Sata to Ide adapters are widely available, here is just one example of many.. Google for lots more..

Good luck

You get can get spliters one that connects to the power plug allowing for more power plugs. But if you DVD Drive USES a SATA you mite not be able to. The fourty pin connector is for IDE HARDDRIVES and CD ROM Drives. If you really want the IDE get a differnt power suplly and so SATA converts wheich connect to the power plugs.Dusty and squall,

Thanks for the responses and link. With this information and the pictures in the link I think I understand the hookup. I'll keep you posted as to the outcome.

Happy New YearWasn't sure if you would understand that. But if you need help I'll provide some examples.

Solve : Sound "more to the left"?

Answer»

Hi there! Happy new year!
Finally the FORUMS are up again!

Now to the problem.
The sound when i for example listen to music or videos the sound seem to be "more to the left" and i have to change the slider
a little bit to the left about 60 % left and 40 % RIGHT if you know what i meen.

This isnt such a big problem, but it would be nice to get it sorted out if there is a way.

Specs:
Asus P5N32-E SLI
Intel core 2 quad Q6600
Nvidia 8800gts 320 mb
Ms windows xp sp2
Soundcard-Some that came with the mobo, and i have on the "sound max" application.

Thanx =)...update sound driver?Do u meen that SoundMax has got a own driver or what?Whatever is your on-board sound chip.Allright IM gonna search for drivers for it, thanx I would try updateing the drive. ALso, take some Electronic cleaner "Deoxit" and spray it on the ends of the plug connections. Move them in and out repeatedly to remove any dirt.i would throw out the soundmax card and get a new sound card. they are nothing but junk and they have caused so many different audio problems to so many different people, INCLUDING me.

Solve : Trouble with DVD drive (Maybe)?

Answer»
Trouble with DVD drive;
Not every time, but a lot of the time when I "Eject" a disc from my DVD drive my computer will immediately do a "Restart" This can't be good. I am using a very good HP computer with windows XP. Any ideas please?
Jim
Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery...
Uncheck"auto restart on errors"...
Save the changes and exit.
Re-boot.
Now you will GET a BSOD instead of a restart next time...write down the entire error message and post it here.31 Dec 07

The computer finally crashed this morning ( I haven't been using it that much)
This is the message I get:

" A problem has been detected and windows has shut down. To prevent damage to your computer

RDR-FILE;-SYSTEM
Check any newly installed hardware ....etc....(no new hardware){My words}

Technical info:
Stop: OX00000027 (OXBAAD009C, OXEBACB56C, OXBACB268, 0XED4 7D4EA)

cdudf-xp.sys-address ED47d4ea base at ED442000, DATESTAMP 407c6bc2

Beginning dump of physical memory
physical memory dump complete."

At this point the computer was froze, So I was unable to "cut and paste," I hope I have copied everything correctly.

Thank you for any advice you might give me...

I'm not sure what cause that But I restart it after that and everything seems fine so try booting it up again.Reading some posts, it may be Norton related. Do you have anything from Symantec installed?
How long ago did it start?I don't think that his problem seeing as I get it too and I don't run Norton. It just happens from time to time.Did you try System Restore?Thank you for your reply.
No, I don't have Norton installed, I replaced Norton with Mcafee about a year ago..The only thing I do have installed along this line are Mcafee, Stopzilla(great program) and Wedroot Spy Sweeper.
I made the "restore" disc when I first got the computer a couple of years ago BUT I just don't have the nerve to try a "Restore"
Thanks a lot
Jim How much RAM is installed in this machine ? ?
ALSO what OS is it ? ?

MS seems to indicate this is a memory problem so post back with as much info on the machine and OS and we can go from there...Thank you:
I have an HP Pavilion a850y: PENTIUM(r)_ 4 cpu 3.20ghz, 1gig memory:
Microsoft windows XP home edition, version 2002, service pack 2.
Has one each: IDE-CD R/RW 48xC, Benq DVD LS DW1655,
The problem I have has happened on both the CD & DVD Drives.

I'm not talking about your Restore disk, I'm talking about Windows built-in System Restore. One thing you can try is replacing the IDE cable for the CD/DVD drives...they do go bad. But i don't think it's this...
Remember to remove all power when working inside the case.
In the meantime i would also DLoad and run MemTest to test that RAM...any errors are bad and mean it will need replaced.
Let the test run for a few hours.I was just looking a BIT and saw that you replaced Norton with McAffee. I recommend doing a deeper check into the Program Files folder and MSconfig because even after uninstalling norton...it leaves remnants. Most of them bear symantec in thier name...bear that in mind when searching for them.

After you are sure you got every last trace...use a registry cleaner.

This had solved my DVD drive problem once before.

Solve : my computer wont load........please help?

Answer»

Hello, umm im having TROUBLE with my computer not loading when i turn it on. My bios was going a bit funny because i was looking around in there the other day and i went into CPU speeds and tried to change them around but it just wrecked my computer. I got help on here and some guy told me to remove this little battery thingy that was like on my mother board sumwhere and i did and it fixed the problem. But then the other day i tried to start my computer and it didnt start again, i tried removing that little battery again but this time it didnt work. now my screen, keyboard, and speakers wont load when i turn my computer on. if someone can help me id be really happy cause i kinda need it up and running soon.......thankyouDouble postsorry i just wasnt sure which forums to put it in.......Not sure where the orginal post is but takeing out the CMOS battery won't FIX it. Put the Battery back in and wait a couple hours since it probably has to charge. It keeps track of your settings an such like the clock thats why it keeps time even when its unpluged. Look around the BIOS again if you can get it to boot there should be an area where you should be able to reseat the settings to how they were.umm....i cant even get into the bios......when i start it up i can hear it start up normally but the keyboard, speakers, and screen wont load. so i cant really get into anything. I dont think its the battery that needs charging because i took the battery from my main computer and put it into the one im trying to fix and it didnt work....ill keep trying different things but if anyone has any ideas please help. Try going into your BIOS again and set IDE settings for your Hard Drive to "user".
You have to play with the BIOS settings to get yours to load the drives correctly. Have had similar prob. with mine. Of course this is risky business, but your comp. isn't working correctly ANYWAY, so the BIOS is worth a try. Remember to write down your previous settings, before you change things. Always save and exit the BIOS each time. The BIOS is pretty rugged so spend some time trying this approach first or next.
He SAID he couldn't get into the BIOS, So hears something else to try take out the RAM and see if you don't get a beep. If you do your motherboard is okay and it could be the CPU. If not it mite be the problem.yeah thats what i thought the problem could be and i really hope my motherboard isn't fried lol.........ill have to check it out.....
