Solve : hard disk drive information recovery?

Answer»

i recently took 2 hdd out of a pc, because the pc doesn't work. But i want to acces these 2 hdd to recover the information, how do i do it? much help is appreciated. The best method would be to hook them up in a working machine jumpered as a slave drive.
This will enable you to see the drive and it's contents when you re-boot in Windows Explorer and you can copy/burn to your heart's content.
On the back of the HDD's you will see a set of 10 or 12 pins next to the POWER connector...
Visit the drive manuf. site to find the jumper SETTINGS but they are usually on a small diagram on the drive itself.
Once the jumper is set you need to check the jumper on the drive in the machine you are installing it to. Some need to be set to MASTER/w/slave for this to work.
The master drive should be connected to the end of the IDE connector which is the flat ribbon cable with the slave drive(the one you want to copy) on the middle connector.
Make sure all connections are snug, take your time and don't force anything and you should be good to go.

I suggest only doing one drive at a time. And when you go to do the second drive do a few re-boots after DISCONNECTING the first drive and before connecting the second drive with only the master on the working machine hooked up.
This prevents the BIOS from gettting a drive swap-brain fart...

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

Solve : Connecting a second hard drive.?

Answer»

I currently have a 40GB IDE hard drive running Windows XP. I WANT to add a second hard drive to it and i have a SATA 80GB hard drive. When I hook it up to the PC it reads from the SATA FIRST which doesnt have an Operating system on it. How do I get it to boot tp the IDE hard drive first? Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. I tryed searching through this site and I didn't see any topics related to it. THANKS!Go to your BIOS go to the tab ADVANCE then look for Boot Priority then on your list from 1-X (X SHOWING you the total amount of Hard Drives/Devices you can hook up) then make the Boot Priority 1. IDE Hard Drive OR CD-ROM Drive (If you want it is used if your computer crashes or other failures) 2. IDE Hard Drive (If you want CD-ROW first) 3. SATA Drive. Then Save CHANGES and Quit, reboot and tell us/me what happends does it work? Also when you have done the above you could TRAVEL to the SATA drive manuf. site and DLoad their utilities...
These will allow you to "clone " the 40G to the SATA and have everything in place as is...
After you have made sure everything is running fine you can then format the older 40G and use it for storing files.

p.s. If you recieved a CD with the SATA drive the utilities are on there...just put it in and boot from it.

Solve : now i have NO sound at all?

Answer»

to add to my other problem (re: IE problems -> able to watch videos, but no sound heard). sound was working fine yesterday, came home from work went to listen to my music and nothing. looked through this forum for advice, tried suggestions:

- did the windows troubleshooting and no help.
-did the device manager thing, says sound/audio device is working fine. no exclaimation marks or question mark icons
-mute is unchecked, volume devices are all up
- tested speakers out by plugging into my own stereo, working fine
- my sister DID say that she accidently turned off our power bar before the computer actually shutdown (could that affect it?)

again, simple pc talk please. any suggestions are appreciated, thank you in advanceEasiest fix would be to try re-installing the sound drivers...all kinds of GOOFY things can happen when a machine is powered down improperly...k, did the reinstalling of driver (with someone walking me through it) and nothing.
went to this site: http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97-2.aspx?lineid=5&famid=12&series=8&Software=True#8Windows

d'led and installed and still no sound.

what on earth am i doing wrong? :-?Can you swap another sound card in there to see if it works ? ?
It's not an impossibility that the card itself has gone South....Maybe your computer is haunted?! Probably not but I had the same problem with my sound card. Except my sound card wasn't even being detected. It just randomly stopped working. I moved the card to a DIFFERENT ISA slot. Didn't work. Reinstalled drivers. Still didn't work (You should make you install the CORRECT drivers for your card). So I gave up and left the computer by itself for a few hours. Scarily without doing anything when I turn my 'puter back on the sound card works! :-? *CENSORED*. Although the computer turns itself on by itself when I don't tell it to (I can't anyway, I checked) every once and a while. BUT just in case your computer is, don't do something bad to your computer or it may start doing those things! Or worse, delete the contents of your hard drive. Quote

If you are still using an ISA card, it's probably giving you that much problems because of its old age..

Solve : Computer starts up then shuts down?

Answer»

Hi, my computer that I just bought on Craigslist will start up for a few seconds, and then it shuts down. It will stay on for anywhere from 1 to 7 or 8 seconds. The strange thing is that the computer as it is started up fine when I went to look at it before. We even SWAPPED the video CARD just to make sure everything was working before I bought it. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, please respond to me post-haste. Thank you in advance.

Pentium 4 Dual-Core 3.2 Ghz
1GB DDR ram
160 GB Hard Drive
256 MB GeForce 8500 XT
RC410L/800-M (V2.0) Motherboard

It has a copy of Windows installed, but no drivers for anything (no motherboard drivers or video card drivers)ok, how about your psu?how many wattage output?
And, did the cpu fan spinning? How old the computer now?
Could it because of the thermal paste?

Try without the GRAPHIC card 1st It's possible in the move that something has jarred loose.
Remove a side panel and carefully remove and re-seat all addon cards and the RAM sticks.
Check for dust bunnies while you are in there

p.s. You will NEED to DLoad and install the MBoard drivers also ...not having them will just create issues.i had the same sort of problem turned out my keyboard had gone faulty can you try another keyboardQuote from: Lemming_Attack on September 27, 2007, 12:24:28 AM

Hi, my computer that I just bought on Craigslist will start up for a few seconds, and then it shuts down. It will stay on for anywhere from 1 to 7 or 8 seconds.

Such problems probably occurs due to some unusual virus. I have had the prob of restarting the computer and i reinstalled window XP and the problem solved. you also try to reinstall your window might you get it right !

Regards larbert: I don't think reinstalling always gets rid of viruses. Best bet is to reformat if you want to get completely rid of a nasty virus that causes the comp to shut off.

also, does it do a POST test? Does it beep once at bootup? You said 7 to 8 seconds so I am assuming so. I doubt that it is a keyboard error (as soldier suggested) as there are different sequence of beeps for that sort of thing.

I think I'm going with patio on this one. Probably something got loose during the move. If it's not that it's probably either the PSU or a fan/heat issue.

Solve : writing ISO image to DVD?

Answer»

I have Sonic DigitalMedia LE v7 on a Windows XP computer, and need to record a 4.31 GB ISO image to DVD, and I have a DVD+R blank disk. The Disk INFORMATION function reports that the disk can HOLD 4,482.6 MB (4.377 GB). When I click on "Burn Image to Disc" an advertisement for Easy Media Creator 10 appears. However, I cannot find any information indicating whether Easy Media Creator 10 can record an ISO image. I don't want to buy it if it can't do this. And I can't find any other software that promises to do it.Practically all burning software can burn an ISO image. It's the most common task there is. Many people use an app called Ahead Nero Burning ROM. If you don't already have a copy, and don't want to pay for software, there are plenty of free alternatives such as CDBurnerXP.

http://cdburnerxp.se/I FOUND I also had Nero Express on the computer. Recording was easy. Thanks.Jim_Clark, did you know you share a name with one of the greatest Formula 1 racing DRIVERS of all time?

Solve : Sudden loss of power?

Answer»

Hi, I'm new here but it looks like a very informative and friendly forum... can you help?

Last night, whilst playing "Painkiller" (I'm 38, don't start!), I had a sudden loss of power to my desktop; without any warning and no jarring to the case, it suddenly died.

Monitor, speakers, external HD all carried on working.

When i switch off the power at the wall and switch back on (UK 240V), there is a momentary flicker of life as the case fans (and leds) flare up for a tiny flicker and then die. It will do this once only... subsequent pressing of power button does nothing, HOWEVER if i disconnect power to the wall and reconnect, it will do the same THING.

I opened it up and the processor, PSU fans all start momentarily and then die.

No other equipment in the house flickered at the time (like lights or TV).

Am I right in thinking it's the PSU that has suddenly died?

(One thing of interest... a week ago I updated my video driver to ATI CATALYST 7.9; this wouldn't run any of my Half life installation so I removed it and reinstalled version 6.

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

AMD Athlon 2.2, running at 3.2

Radeon 9600 graphics
Onboard sound.
Fancy case.Forgot to add:

I have a 400w power supply and ASRock K7S8X motherboard. What make and wattage is that PSU ? ?
It's possible it has failed and/or it's not quite enough for the new hardware.
Best procedure would be to borrow a known good one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there overnite...
If everything works FINE you know for SURE it's the PSU...Thanks, unfortunately I don't know - it's at home and I never thought to check. I'm at work on the only other PC I have access to.

There's no new hardware at all... the last thing I added was the external HD about 3 months ago.Well at any rate try what's been suggested and we'll leave the light on...Thanks for your help.
I'll try that!Power supply is shot, replace itHi!

Yep, I put in an old Power supply and sure enough, it works!

Fab. Thanks for your help and advice. With a newer machine to keep it in good shape and also be ready for any upgrades down the road you may want to invest in a new PSU instead of relying on one swapped in that "works"...

It's one of the most important components yet everyone seems to overlook it.
Expect to spend 40 to 50 bucks for a decent one and 70 to 100+ for HIGH end.

Solve : How do I open my MS keyboard??????

Answer»

Hello everyone,
I have a Microsoft ergonomic 4000 ver 1.0 keyboard. The guarantee is expired and I have a tiny problem that is annoying me to the max. I live in Holland but purchased the keyboard in America. The problem was there from the start, I thought I could live with this but now I want to repair it myself.
The problem is that the LED for the caps lock is missing! when I removed all the screws from the bottom of the keyboard the only things I was able to remove were the wrist pads. With these removed I was able to look at the smallpc board and can see that one of the leds is in FACT not there. If I can seperate the top and bottom shells I can easily solder in a replacement led but I am unable to seperate the two halves. Does anyone here know how to do this? Are there some hidden screws under one or more keys? if so which keys?
THANKS for any suggestions
MikeMy only recommendation would be to locate the actual model number of the keyboard usually written on one of the corners or underneath the board and googling your model number followed by the word diagram. Maybe if your lucky enough there will be a diagram or photo of the break down of your board.Try swapping the scroll lock (which nobody uses nowadays) and the caps lock wires or something? It appears he is still trying to find the way to open the board up.Typically some screws are hidden under the rubber feet, which are stuck on. How about posting some photos?I tried the Google diagram thing. With absolutely no success. I 've been googling like crazy with no results.

Also you are correct in saying I cannot get the $#&%* thing opened up. One cannot repair what one cannot get to. I suspect there are one or more screws hidden under the keys. IMO

Here you go with the pics! Front and rear views. The rubber feet are tiny and have no screws hidden under them.

Those are the kind of rubber feet that look like they might be concealing catches/lugs. What do you see when you remove the feet? Just a BLANK piece of plastic, or something that looks like a joint? (No, not ganja...)

This is an interesting exercise, just writing out how I tend to approach this kind of thing. My disassembling of components has always been somewhat... INTUITIVE... (Yup, things get damaged!!!)No Rob nothing under the little pads except plastic.
When all the screws are removed from the bottom and the wrist pads removed I am able to pry the corners up a bit. It seems like something is holding the center of the top and bottom together. I should have been more clear in this. Thus the reason I think there are screws hidden under one or more keys. If I'm correct then the question is which keys. I've tried prying on a couple of keys up to a point where I felt that if I put any more pressure on them they would break. Aside from the missing LED everything works perfect. I don't want to break the keyboard. Since I am not a touch typer I would very much like to have the idiot light on to warn me I'm typing in Caps. If there were a button to revert a sentence or two typed in caps to small letters that would be great. Since there isn't, at least to my knowledge, then I'll have do do what I've been doing, delete the line and start over. LOL the fun never stops.
Quite a few plastic components have what i call "snap tabs" inside...that is when the 2 pieces press together they snap lock.
You can try gently prying inside the edge towards the center to try and get them to release however i cannot assume any responsibility for damage incurred USING this method.

We have NORTON ghost on a floppy and we have been trying all night to install his new hd.

We then moved jumpers and CABLES about and now we dont know where the *censored* we are. Can anyone tell me if the jumpers on both drives should be on cable select or not and which ribbon cable goes where? We are really in a mess

But in the system information it shows my computer has only 1 gbram running. So i want to know WAT should i do to make it running with 2 gb ram. Are the 2 pieces of RAM identical? Maybe one of them is not compatible or it may be broken. Check by swapping.

The mobo is screwed into the metal panel which "fits" inside the new case INFRONT of the right side panel. It's like portable until I secure it in place in the case.
I guess I will need to unplug everything inside my own puter and hook up the new mobo to it, thats what u mean ??

I'm not sure what you want to do with your cats, but I suggest you keep them AWAY from the 110~230 volts line.

And yes, uninstalling drivers prior to installing a new videocard is a good idea.
You should GOOGLE for DriverCleaner and use that. Unless you're using more than one Nvidia driver in which case I suggest you don't.thanks for advice, I have an uninstaller already, I'll get rid of the old drivers and do a fresh install for the new card.Quote

Solve : USB Flashdrive Issues?

Answer»

Brand-> Dell Inspiron 600m laptop
O/S-> WinXP SP2
RAM->512MB

A friend of mine that works with me is having problems getting flashdrives to recognize on her computer...she has had this problem for quite some time actually..other usb devices work fine on there...what happens is when she plugs them in it brings it up by the tray saying new HARDWARE find and the gives its name which its a lexar firefly jumpdrive 512megs by the WAY. After that it brings up the found new hardware driver instalation wizard...well whenever i would go through that several different ways it would come to cannot install hardware error occurd cuz windows kind find a driver...something along those lines. Well i have gone to lexar, microsoft and a couple other websites and downloaded the driver for it but still does the same thing...and actually all those drivers when they would install would end up saying either driver made only for win95 or 98se or winxp doesn't need to install driver. I have checked in services to make sure plug and play is enabled and checked on the BIOS as well though her bios doesn't MENTION plug and play anywhere to enable or disable it...i have tried my flashdrive on her computer and it does the same thing and i tried her flashdrive on my computer and it brings it right up no problem. I have checked in device manager and it shows that there aren't any driver installed for it or anything...tried updating and all that to the driver and still comes up with the same error...she had on older flashdrive that worked fine on her computer though she lost it and said that it has been about a year since she has used it(since she lost it) so i'm not even sure if this issue happend between that time and if that flashdrive would even work if she found it...not really sure what it is causing the problem...i know xp usually looks for driver itself unlike 95 and 98 but it SEEMS something maybe wrong with the O/S somewhere with a file or somekind causing it to not recognize it...so if anyone has an input it would be appritiated...i told her that maybe completely reinstalling the O/S may just FIX it if it is a corrupted file of some kind. THnx!That's quite a paragraph...
From what i gathered she's running XP correct ?
If so it doesn't need drivers for flash drives.
Have her go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...she should have her XP CD handy as it will ask for it.
Reboot and see what happens.ok i will do that thnx...let you know how it goes.

Solve : Laptop Hardrive Issues?

Answer»

My room MATE has a sony vaio laptop, when we boot it up it says operation SYSTEM not found, I then booted up with his recovery cd's and it says hardrive cannot be found, I then looked in the bios on startup and once again it does not show a harddrive, it was working fine now dead.

He said last TIME he used it a windows screen popped up running through some file verification THING and then shut off and this started.

Any help is appreciated, its only a few years old.

THanksPerhaps that HDD has gotten unseated slightly due to moving...check the Sony site and or your manual to see the proper procedures for removing/replacing that HDD and re-seat it.

patio. 8-)Can you hear the hdd spin up? You may have to put your ear next to where the drive lives to hear it.

If the BIOS doesn't see it the OS surely won't.

Solve : Gateway E4100?

Answer»

I am wanting to upgrade my graphics card on my GATEWAY E4100. I can't find out which AGP graphics card is compatible. I'm LOOKING for a 128 or 256 MB card. Any suggestions what to look for and the cost?I wouldn't bother spending too much on it, AGP is becoming outdated and the cards are far too expensive considered to PCI-E, which your mainboard is not capable of supporting. If you do buy an AGP card, buy one that doesn't cost more than 100~120 dollars or so otherwise you'll end up with a card that might make the rest of your system a bottleneck for performance

MB RAM doesn't mean a lot. It's the processor core and RAM speed on the VIDEOCARD that makes the biggest difference. Plus the amount of pixel pipelines. In any case; the higher, the better.

What games do you plan on playing?Nothing too graphics intensive. I was looking more for a mid level card that could handle some games and Windows VISTA when it comes out.I wouldn't bother buying Windows Vista for your current PC, when Vista comes out it will be cheaper to buy a new computer that comes with Vista (OEM) than it will be to purchase the OS in its retail form.

Besides, I don't think they're bringing out any Vista-ready AGP cards anymore, like I said, the technology is too outdated. It is now PCI-Express that is taking the lead. This doesn't mean that you can't install Vista on your current machine, though.

What kind of videocard is currently installed? Here are the relevant specs on my computer:
Intel Extreme Graphics 2 controller
Universal 0.8 V / 1.5 V AGP 3.0 connector supporting 1X, 4X, and 8X AGP cards or an ADD cardAny new videocard would most likely make a vast improvement in the 128-256MB range. How much do you want to spend? It can very from £20 to £200+. Have a look at 6600GT for a starting point and GO up or down from there.

Solve : NO Video at startup?

Answer»

HI if anyone could help it would be much appreciated.

I have a compaq ml370 G2. It was working fine and i did not open it or do any work on it. I went to start it up and couldn't get video to the monitor.

Thought it was the video card so i got a replacement PCI video card and put it into one of the PCI 66mhz slots which i BELIEVE can be used with a normal PCI card but without success.

I have unplugged all everything from teh motherboard. When i take ram out it beeps so the POST is working, when i take one of the processors out it beeps so the POST is working, The harddrives spin up the CD rom drive spins up, the lights on the RAID Controller card are all green. :-? :-/

I am stumped, I am thinking either it still is the video and the card i have put in is not compatible for some reason or doesn't work in the 66mhz slot or the motherboard has had it. :-/

Any thoughts would be much appreciated

thanks
Have you tried another monitor on it to determine if it's the video or the monitor itself that has GONE South ? ?

What happens when you put the RAM back in, same problem?

The monitor had been tested on another computer all working fine

I have removed the battery for the CMOS still no good,

Don know the exact model of video card that i tried i think it is an S3 TRIO PCI

Thanks for the helpYou mention PCI 66mhz slots...this board is fairly old. Do you know which board it is and have you checked the manuf. site to see which vid cards are supported ? ?

Solve : DVD Rom opening & closing on it's own?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with my DVD Rom opening & closing on it's own. It only started doing this over the last 2 weeks.
The only thing I have downloaded is Microsofts Malicious Software Removal Tool Sep 2007. Ever since downloading this update, this DVD problem has started.
I have tried System Restore, but even this didn't fix the problem.
I have run Spybot (search & destroy), AVG Spyware & Virus Scan & Adware and have come up with nothing. All these programs are updated every day.
The only thing I can think of is that it's a software conflict. But I don't know where to look to correct it.
I'm running out of answers so I'm hoping someone out there might have a solution Do you have a shortcut to the DVD drive on the desktop ? ?
If so delete it and CREATE another one.
Also travel to device Manager and RIGHT click the drive and select "remove"
Windows will automatically re-install it on re-boot.
If all this fails then re-check the drive's connections and ask your friends if they have pranked you...I forgot to mention before that I'm also running Zonealarm's firewall.
I shut the computer down, checked all connections & all looks good.
I removed the DVD in question and then installed it again. But as soon as I reboot the computer, the DVD drive starts opening & closing again.
I'm starting to think that someone has dropped something into my computer without my knowledge. All though everyone denies it.
I know my last resort will have to be to reformat my primary drive and start from scratch. Im trying to avoid that option as I'm only on a slow CONNECTION and it takes me days to update Microsoft.
Is there any other option I can try?
A reformat and install sounds pretty drastic at this point...
When you SAY you removed it and re-installed it what method do you mean ? ?
Another thing you can do to see if it is the hardware would be to swap it into another machine...if it does the same thing then it's the drive.I went to 'Device Manager' & clicked on uninstall which removed the DVD drive. I rebooted the computer, went to 'My Computer' and it was there. So I gathered it installed the DVD drive.
I could take the DVD drive and stick into my daughters computer and see what happens.
I took the DVD drive out, stuck it into my daughter's computer and it did the samething. So we now know that it's the drive.
In my computer I put in an old CD Rom drive and BOOTED the old girl up. To my surprise the CD Rom stayed in.
That's a big releaf for me.
On close inspection of my old DVD drive, I noticed for some reason that something had been split on it. I don't know how it got there or how long it has been there. But it must have been shorting it out.
So know I just have to buy a new DVD Drive. Actually it was my burner, but I hardly use it. So there is no great rush to purchase a new one.
Thanks for all your help "Patio". You were a great help to me. Saved me alot of stress and hair pulling.
Brand new DVD burners are down to about 40 bucks at some good online vendors.
Glad to hear you got it sorted and stop by anytime !

Solve : Overheating Laptop?!?

Answer»

Hi Everyone,

I have a Compaq Presario M2000 Notebook with Windows XP SERVICE Pack 2.

If I leave the AC Adapter plugged in for 5 minutes or so, it will start overheating.
My main concern is that the part that is overheating is RIGHT next to the battery.

I bought the notebook PC about 4 years ago.

Also, this is weird, the fan starts running when my screen is at normal brightness.

Compaq is no longer getting my $1000 dollars. I'm getting an Toshiba next time.

BIOS Setup? Get new computer? What do I do?

THANK you in advance. Are you ABSOLUTELY and completely sure that it hasn't always heated up like this; or is it just that you've only just noticed?

Depending on the layout of the charge system, if the transformer (for 'converting' electrical outlet power into the smaller doses used by your LAPTOP's battery) is built in to the laptop, then this heating is perfectly fine. The transformer has to do something with all that energy, and since it translates it through a magnetic field, that creates a lot of heat energy as a byproduct.

Mind you, if you're leaving it in while fully charged this is generally unadvisable. While in theory the laptop should automatically realise "Oh hey, I'm on AC now" sometimes they do get a tad confused and start using the battery and AC, leading to a constant charging, and much overheating.
All in all it's not something I would worry about too much, as long as you keep your eye on it.

On the fan-brightness front I won't comment, as that's nowhere near my field of limited expertise.Oh, alright. I did leave it in while it has fully charged.

Thank you!get yourself a laptop fan or cooler, to help keep your laptop from getting fried.

Solve : Hard drive recognition?

Answer»

I just installed a slave drive on a dell computer. The computer had been running properly however, after installation the hard drive is not recognized. I removed the slave drive and reconnected OLD drive to original configuration and still have same problem. I also removed battery to clear cmos.

any help would be greatPerhaps the other IDE drives are configured to Cable SELECT and not Master/Slave.

Or you put the cable in the wrong way around if it's an older IDE cable/system.

Did you set the jumpers on each drive correctly ? ?

The original HDD in the machine should be jumpered as "master with slave" and connected to the end of the ribbon cable.

The new HDD you installed should be jumpered as slave and connected to the middle connecter of the ribbon cable.

Right now the BIOS is having a BRAIN fart so you MIGHT have to retry it a few times.

patio. 8-)You were right! It had a "brain fart". It's now working after restarting several times. Thanks for your help!!!!!Congrats !

Solve : New video card question?

Answer»

I was planning on upgrading my video card, and after doing some research, I think I've decided on the ATI X1950 Pro, but some people have been telling me that I'll need to upgrade my power supply (350w) in order to use it. However, I found this info HTTP://tinyurl.com/382f9h that makes it appear that it would be no problem with what I CURRENTLY have. So who is right? (In case it matters, I have win xp pro, amd 4600, 2gb ram)
Well for the ATI Radeon X1950 the minimum power requirement is 450W so the people were right, also you are using a AMD ATHLON 64 X2 4600+ (2.4GHz) which I am guessing your model uses 65W to 125W. So yes you need to upgrade your power supply which I suggest 550-600W with a 6-Pin PCI-e connect for your graphics card.So the info on that page I found is totally incorrect, then? Go here and get an actual number:
eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5Quote from: roccenstein on August 23, 2007, 03:05:51 PM

So the info on that page I found is totally incorrect, then?

Nope your website link is correct, it shows you the Power Comsumption of the Graphics card during full load, not the power supply requirement.OK, so just how difficult is it to change the PS? I've changed graphics cards, RAM, HARD drives, etc, before, but never a PS. Is it simply a matter of unplugging what's there and then connecting the new one?yeah pretty much. And do yourself a favor...don't buy a tewnty dollar special...Wha...? You been following me? Make sure it comes with a PCI-e 6-Pin connector for your graphics card Quote from: roccenstein on August 24, 2007, 08:53:45 AM

Solve : Help Please?

Answer»

I turned my computer on one day and I got the normal Asus screen, the next screen SHOWING the harware was black and snowy but it then BOOTED to windows.

After the next reboot all I got was a black snowy screen and it never loaded windows.
After talking to some peeps the consensus was that I had a MOBO failure.

I just replaced the mother board put everything back TOGETHER and when I boot up the computer I got the nice Asus screen then it went righ back to the snowy screen and does not load windows. I believe the OS is not loading cause when I press the power on button it shuts right off. I do not need to hold it.

What could this failure be? RAM failure? Video card?To test the RAM DLoad and run MemTest...let it run for a few hours.
But it's probably the video card.
I doubt it was the MBoard. You could try getting new video card to test to see if problem goes away. f Memtest has NO problem reading RAM, then it could be video card's problem.

Or you could t ry getting a hold of a second computer and install your video card on ait ND see if that second computer has same problems when loading to windows.

Solve : Bootup Problem/Backwards Compatible??

I currently have a PENTIUM 2.40R chip in my ECS P4VXASD2+ motherboard with 1 gig of SDRAM, all powered by a 500 watt Antec psu. I have just purchased a Intel Pentium 3.20E processor, but upon installing it, the system does not BOOT. The monitor does not even get a signal.

The motherboard has a 533fsb, and the chip has a 800fsb, but it should be backwards compatible correct? Also both are the correct SOCKET 478 for the motherboard. I cannot think of any other problems unless the chip was doa.

Any suggestions on what the problem may be and how I can RECTIFY it?

Thanks a lot to anyone that can offer some assistance/solution.

Solve : Cannot change refresh rate??

Answer»

I have a used COMPAQ presario 2700 that I just recently RECIEVED from my brother. The screen is starting to give so I've hooked it up to an ages old DiGview. My problem is that it makes me nauseous. My old computer never did, even though I use the same monitor for both. I did a little searching and concluded that it must be the refresh rate, problem being, I can't change the refresh rate on this thing to anything more than default (that I know of, anyway)

see?
is there anyway AROUND this or am I pretty much stuck with my nausea? Most newer MONITORS do not require drivers...but as this is an older model try searching for drivers using the model# from the BACK of the monitor...

Solve : cd r-rw drive (works somewhat>make it work>DIES???)?

Answer» OK i'll say it plain and SIMPLE. i have a philips cdrw800 drive. It used to WORK (somewhat). At first (aprox. two weeks ago) the bios found could fin and read that it was there. (Now the somewhat not working part) It was always seen as slave even when i had jumpers set to master. When i put it to cable select it still thought it was a slave. i switched to a SPARE dvd drive i had laying around. The dvd drive worked perfectly no matter what settings i put it at (so not a bad IDE slot on motho or something in bios). So i set my dvd drive to master and my cdrw drive as slave. Bios detected that Right so i tryed it.(Success)"I AM A GENEUS". Now a week after the bios won't detect the cdrw drive at all so does this mean my drive is toast or can i try something. "HELP ME OTHER GENEUSES"Try only connecting the cdrw drive to the IDE cable.
Also try using a different power plug for the drive.
If the BIOS still can't detect it, I think the drive is toast.
You might want to try the drive in another computer (if possible) just to be sure.
i have tryed it with only cdrw on ide and i had gotten it from other comp i think it was working in there. That drive is at least 5 years old and maybe more...
It may have just GONE to drive Heaven.

Solve : schiz mouse leading to serious insanity issues - hellpppp?

Answer»

Here's a weird one for the super techs. I have had this problem intermittently for a couple of years now, where my mouse freezes within minutes of REBOOTING or goes completely schizo at any time. So far I have tried different mice, both PS/2 and USB, both optical and ball, and nothing seems to cure it permanently. It's not a cleanliness issue. I have the same issue across multiple computers over various builds including a P4 1.8GHZ and a P4 3GHz, with 2 different motherboards under the 3GHZ, 2 different hard drives, several different video cards, different RAM DEPENDING on the motherboard used, reformatted and reinstalled operating systems, and the only thing I can come up with is possible interference, but none of the mice were wireless, which helps limit that as a factor. Even different monitors and printers.
I might have no problem at all for 2 months straight, then for a continuous week or 2, I might have complete nightmares trying to use my pc. So far the ONLY consistent factor across every setup has been windows XP and my 3.5" drive and speakers (drawing power via the monitor power jack), old CDRom, although there is also DVDRom that was used in the latest reinstall. Other than the XP, I can't relate it to any specific software installation either.
Any ideas? I'm GOING mad here.I have never used the monitor power connector for any devices ...
This may have nothing to do with your mouse issues however.
What other electronic components are close to this machine ? ?other than items directly connected to it, like the cable modem, this pc is alone (electrically) in it's room. and different positions in the room have no affect too.I know I'm a voice in the wilderness but I feel that using words like "schizo" in that way is offensive to clients of MENTAL health services and people who work with them. It is as offensive as "spaz" or "spastic" for CLUMSY and "gay" for lame. A little sensitivity please!

At least it's not a PC mouseTo the politically correct contrex :
I'm sorry if you are so easily offended, but schizo is precisely the correct description for my mouse's behaviour. It is acting as if it has multiple personalities. At the times that it "acts up", it goes from "personality 1" perfectly average mouse, to "personality 2" where the mouse and pointer "freeze", frequently in the first minute of the pc being rebooted, with only means of unfreezing being rebooting, to "personality 3" dragging the pointer across the screen in any direction at random, INCLUDING AGAINST THE DIRECTION THE MOUSE IS BEING MOVED IN, until it locks itself into any corner of the screen, where it will then wait a sec before allowing itself to be moved away, and "personality 4" where the pointer leaps agitatedly around the screen, clicking at random, creating new icons on the desktop, deleting things, opening files, etc, in which state rapid and repeated use of the "esc" key calms it down.

The problem is i have this other computer which does not have a graphics card at all so i am forced to use the on board analog (vga), and my lcd supports dvi and vga and it also has cables for it, so iv set up everything correctly but when i turn on the LCD, a LITTLE box appears in top left corner and it says "DIGITAL" "ANALOG" and it keeps switching back n forth (its finding out the configuration) after that it goes on analog my screen is all black and my start button on my lcd is just blinking.. i have also tried it on digital which does not work either.. but when i try it on my own pc and i connect it to the graphic card (vga) everything works fine.

o and it used to work fine on a CRT monitor.

any suggestions, solutions? would be appreciated

thanks.Check the BIOS settings to see if the onboard video has been disabled.how do i check bios settings when my screen is all black? i cant view anything just the light blinking..dot2...

1) First check the monitor's cable connections on the back of the monitor...as well as the connection to the back of your PC.
2) If you are still having the issue and can't see the screen, once you boot into BIOS, you may need to install a graphics card in the computer you are having the issue with.
3) Once the graphics card is installed, connect your monitor to it and boot into BIOS.
4) Check your BIOS settings and make sure the onboard video is enabled...save your settings and exit.
5) Turn off your computer...disconnect all cables...remove the installed graphics card...reconnect cables...plug your monitor into the onboard graphics connection...turn your computer on.

Please post your results...I have not done the fallowing PROCEDURE ^
but some more stuff i found out is its not a monitor issue, when i start the computer everything runs fine but i hear no beep sound and before i used to hear it and monitor worked fine. i have switched the rams and i still don't get any beep could it be a dead cpu?

please help : [What type of RAM did you switch ? ?
There are many types and using the wrong ones will prevent a machine from BOOTING properly.by switch i mean i just used one ram that came with the machine then i tried the other stick to see if it works but still nothing?

maybe i need a pci express graphics card?Quote from: dot2 on August 20, 2007, 08:01:36 PM

And why didn't you try the procedure I recommended?i will try it as soon as i can tomorrow hopefully and ill post the results asap. good news!

i tried the steps you told me.. but unfortunitly didn't work same thing was happening so then i noticed that the power supply was a 20pin and there was 4 pin free on where the motherboard connector are, so i hooked up my 600w 24 pin connector to the motherboard and what do you know everything worked fine!

btw the psu i was using on that motherboard was 400 psu 20pins

so now I'm thinking of buying a 430w 24pin connector psu

anyways thanks for everyones input!Glad to hear you have it all working...good 4 you...

Take care...i got one more question..

im trying to find another power supply that has the enough power and would do the job so i was wondering.. will this power supply do the job?

present power supply (not enough) : [emailprotected], [emailprotected], [emailprotected], [emailprotected], [emailprotected], [emailprotected] -> 400w (powerup)

the power supply i plan to buy: [emailprotected], [emailprotected], [emailprotected], [emailprotected], [emailprotected],[emailprotected] --> 430W (thermaltake)

remember i don't have a video card i only have a pentium 4 D 3ghz asus motherboard couple of usb's inuse, cd,floppy, dvd, and the other normal necessities, 2 sticks of ddr2 ram 1gb

someone want to suggest a power supply please do so!

thanks. Check the pricing on a 600W or even 700W Thermaltake...if it's not that much more i'd go for it if you're thinking of doing a new build down the road you would be in fairly good shape...

Solve : Please help me solve this problem on dell inspiron laptop?

Answer»

I have a dell inspiron 6000 laptop.
The battery of the laptop was completely discharged.
I connected it to the AC power so that the battery will charge. After some time I shut down the system by pressing the power button . Please note that accidently the power button was pressed for a long time and then there was a beep.

Now if I TRY to charge the laptop it only turns on the display light which indicates that the power is on .

It does not turn on the display light which indicates that the battery is charging.

The display light which indicates that the computer reads or writes data flickers sometimes but does not remain turned on for a long time.

Is it that the computer is in the power management mode and the battery is not getting charged.
Can it be possibly due to pressing the power button for long time until I heard a beep.

Is there something WRONG during POST

Please help me find a SOLUTION to this problem.

Thanking you.I'd unhook it from the MAIN and remove the battery and let it sit overnight.
Then hook up only the AC and see if it boots...
If it does power down and re-insert the battery and let it get a full charge.

Which is better the Radeon X850 PRO or the Radeon X1600 PRO...also tell me if possible why you would choose that one please

(both PCI x16)

sory for any misspelling bestbuy had the huge sales today i strted work at 3 amWell you need to talk with Track. He has been summoned. Well I have an x1600XT and it works fine for me. Not sure which one is better. As to "why" would you pick the better one? Well, self-answering X1600XT>X1600Pro
I think the X850 is better than the X1600, see here - http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/X850pro-1600pro-ftopict178926.html - and here - http://boards.1up.com/zd/board/message?board.id=pc&message.id=59847
They seem to suggest that the X850 has better performance, but the X1600 will make your games look nicer and will be more future proof (sort of, even though the frame rates will drop)
Track will be able to explain it betterok beacuse i have the X850 wich i cant get to below 70C (really loud *censored* thing) this is the X850 BEFORE they ripped it off the market and repositioned the fan and then re-massed produced them....i bouth the X1600 PRO becuase it was only 99$!!! so i figured....i wont open it but we only have 5 and the deal is good for onyl one more day

oh also i read over those things...it seems they were split right down the middle....im not going to open the card incase my X850 is the better choiceSo on those deals with only "5 minimum per store" advertised in the Sunday paper, do Best Buy employees get first pick? I have been there on several occasions, first in the door, STRAIGHT to the department and was told they were already sold out. One of several reasons I don't shop there anymore. (The other biggies being I don't want an "extended warranty" on everything I buy and I certainly do not want a "special offer" on magazine subscriptions.( ha ha

no no if we did that we would be fired....we cant buy ANY door buster deals or PS3's or Wii's unless we stand in that line like everyone ELSE or else we have to wait until after X-mas to purchace things

i wish we got first dips we had the wii's 5 days before we sold them same with the PS3's

if the EMPLOYES want anything we have to have friends and family come in and get it for us with no discount -P although the discounts on the door busters are INSANE!!!Quote

So u own the X850 Pro, and have just purchased the X1600 Pro?

The X850 Pro is MUCH better than the X1600 Pro, having over twice the memory bandwidth and game performance. The only thing that the X1600 Pro has over the X850 Pro, is Shader Model 3.0, wich is a nice feature, but not even worth an extra 20$. The only time when SM3.0 actually matters is when u want to input HDR into a game, and then u must have SM3.0. The thing abt the X1600 Pro is that it is too weak to even think abt rendering a game with HDR, so the X1600 Pro is totally worthless.

The X850 Pro is built on the R480 core, wich has 16 pipelines. However the X850 Pro, unlike the X850XT has 4 of those pipelines "locked". What u can do is "unlock" the 4 pipelines, giving u a 33% increase in performance over what u have now. That means that the X1600, with it's 4 pipelines is even more worthless in COMPARISON to the X850.

http://www.gpureview.com/show_cards.php?card1=54&card2=350#

How to unlock the 16 pipelines on the X850 Pro:
http://www.overclock.net/faqs/44936-how-flash-your-x850pro-xt-pe.html

*Note: The X850 Pro is overclocked considerably, cosidering the fact that it has a 130nm core.
This results in high temperatures. In order to lower those temperatures significantly, purchase the Zalman VF900 graphics card cooler, wich costs 25$.thanks very much

i guess i will return this other card ASAP

Hm looks like you'll just have to MAKE do on 1280x1024 then

Try playing on the higher resolution on absotule minimum settings, and SEE if the problem is still there. I think you can FORCE battlefield 2 to use whatever resolution you want.

I can play 1600x1200 (which is the closest res. supported in bf2 to my MONITOR) on med settings with x2 AA. I wish I could force it to 1680x1050.You can try editing the video.con file in my DOCUMENTS and settings/%username/battlefield2/profiles/%profile and add the resolution of your choosing. Probably won't work, though.

Solve : Is my HD toast??

Answer»

A couple days ago all was well until my computer started lagging a bit so I WENT to restart it to clear things up. When it came back on again it immediately said cannot find registry/configuration file and would not load anything, even in safe mode. I'd just see the background come up and that was it, no programs would open. So I ran it with CD support and managed to fix that...kind of. I could get into windows but all my files were damaged. Not only ones that were there before but I was DLing a few files and they became damaged too in mid-DL. After that I restarted the computer again and its going back to the windows screen but no programs will open.

This all happened pretty suddenly, everything was working FINE until about 2 minutes before I got that FIRST error message. The HD is only about a year old and hasn't taken any damage that I know of but it won't hold any info without damaging it so my guess would be thats the problem. But I'm not great with computers so any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks Have you tried reinstalling Windows XP and testing your Hard Disk Drive using diagnostic software?I'm running scandisk and such right now and im going to try and backup a couple files. Then I'll try reinstalling. I'm just getting a few things done before I do that because I've never tried reformatting myself before. What do you mean by damaged? Alright so about a week ago, i was playing games fine until about 4 days ago. I open Css and i create a server, It runs fine but it looks different. I go into the SETTINGS and see that the shadows, textures, and models where set to low (usually on high). I set them up, go back in game and its running horrible. I'm not sure what to think because i was running it on the settings i usually do which i get about 40 frames but now im getting about 5-10. I play around, and decide ill just reformat now because I as planning to in about a week. I reformat, install my drivers, and steam. I open css to get the same problem AND when i get it to run decent, the screen starts to flicker, turning weird colors and stretching out models. After this i tried other games and hte same thing happened.

I've tried: Reinstalled Video Cards Drivers

Motherboard Drivers

reinstalled dx9.0c

checked OVERHEATING and it was not

Downloaded Nvidia beta drivers

Reinstalling Css

Reformated agian

I've ran out of things to try and i don't know what to do. Hopefully someone has had this problem and has a fix so please someone help.

Solve : New Processor Trouble?

Answer»

I recently upgraded from a Athlon 64 3200+ to an X2 4200+ and it came in today, I got it all installed perfectly, started the computer up and everything was working fine. It got to the point where the Windows XP screen would COME on, and then it just flat out shut down. At this point, pressing the button to turn my computer on wouldn't even work anymore. I had to reset the power supply. I pulled everything out and put it back in to no avail. I eventually re-installed the 3200+ and that's where I'm at now. Any advice is appreciated.

Remove all traces of thermal compound and then add a nice NEW small flat layer of that wonderful stuff ...... always USING a nice plastic credit card , stick it back in your socket and boot up....

I find to much or to little can cause this ... same things happened to me ..... Repair install of XP

When changing major components such as a MBoard or CPU XP will sometimes balk as the ORIGINAL install ties itself to the HARDWARE it was installed on...
I recommend reading it thru thoroughly before hand and printing it out for reference...
If done properly you will retain all programs and data but it's advisable to backup the most important stuff ahead of time.

Good Luck and let us know...Thanks for the advice so far.

Patio, actually I threw in the boot disc to see if I could at least reformat and it still did the same thing. The procedure doesn't involve a format...it's designed to save your data and the OS intact.
If you're saying it is still shutting down before you can do anything then i would re-check all your hardware connections...etc. and make sure the CPU/Heatsink combo is seated firmly.
Did you have to remove the MBoard to do this process ? ?
How old is the PSU ? ?
Is the RAM seated properly ? ?
In other words re-check everything to be sure...Thanks guys for taking the time to read my problem and reply. I cleaned off all of the paste and re-applied it. Solve : Drive only recognized in certain areas?

I installed a new Maxtor 200Gb 6L200P0 on my MACHINE today. It's a P4 2.8 GHz, 1Gb RAM, WIN-XP Pro machine. The new HD is in addition to the 200Gb already in there. It showed up fine on the detection screen before windows loads after installation. Once windows loaded, it showed up in my Device Manager under the original drive. I checked the MODEL numbers on the drives to ensure it was showing the 2 separate drives. However, the drive does NOT show in My COMPUTER. The original drive is there, as are the CD-ROM and floppy drives. However, this ONE is not there. I checked my setting and I don't have any drives that are hidden. Anyone ever run into this? Anyone have any ideas? Many thanks!

Ok make sure you reinable everything i told you to disable ......

Try this :

1. Take out one stick of ram leaveing the others in reboot

2. If you have no success with that put the stick you took out back in and take the other stick out reboot again .....

Tony
ok first removed the 2gb stick left 512 in still shut down so put 2gb stick in 512 out and guess what shut down Okokokok

Now we enter the extreme :

Unplug all cables and connectors from the motherboard to the power supply ...... and reattach them .... make sure there firmly in and your fully grounded at all times ....... unplug anything unnecessary like LED light connectors and leave them out for now .....

If that fails take out your GPU and reboot without it ......

Im throwing ideas at you here ....... and i have a few left......

I'd say 2.5GB RAM is enough.Quote from: Richenstony on September 26, 2007, 07:44:29 AM

can someone tell me why a faulty keyboard would do this..... Huh?
If the keyboard has a KEY for shutting the computer off, maybe there is something wrong with this key? Maybe some elecrical phenomena occur that are interpreted by the system as pressing of that key? Maybe something has been spillt over the keybord and led to some shorts or whatsoever? Just a random idea.i dont no why must be the shut down key on the keyboard but it is that but the faulty keyboard on a working pc and it made that close down to. so a new keyboard and all is fine now who would have thought it haha.Quote from: soldier101983 on September 27, 2007, 04:04:06 PM

Solve : Have no USB support- cannot access computer with usb keyboard and mouse?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 9100 with 1 gb RAM, Pentium D chip, and 2- 160gb harddrives that I have partioned into 4 total drives. I run Win XP Media Center Ed. 2005, which is really a fancy XP Pro. This machine only has USB ports in addition to the monitor port.

I had a virus I could not get rid of, so I reformatted and repartitioned both hard drives like I had it. There was a separate 256mb partition that had the MBR in it, so, thinking I needed that, I didn't reformat it. I wonder now if the virus hid there. I reinstalled Win XP MCE 2005 without problems and I reloaded a couple of Dell drivers, when suddenly a big, FLASHING, rectangular box appeared on the desktop saying it was installing programs, not to interrupt, and that it could take up to 30 minutes to complete. After that was FINISHED, I discovered that my USB ports no longer operated, hence I had no working keyboard or mouse. I tried to reboot from the DVD, but I could not press a key to start from the CD as it asked, so it merely booted to the Windows desktop, where I can go no further. I am stuck! I have no idea where to go with this. Is there some way to turn on the usb ports manually on the motherboard? I couldn't get into the setup screen either because I couldn't press F2 after the Dell screen. Would a new hard drive make any difference? Does anyone have any ideas? I appreciate any and all help.

Try plugging the keyboard into each of the usb ports.
Turn off the computer and unplug it for 15 minutes to make sure all the power is drained from it and try again.
Try a different keyboard/mouse.
This is why everyone should have a spare PS2 mouse and keyboard...if the OS doesn't load properly the USB ports are worthless...
It won't cost much...and you'll have them for such emergencies.Quote from: patio on September 25, 2007, 03:21:51 PM

a lot of the new dells don't come with ps/2 ports.
A call to dell tech support may be in order.Dell won't talk to me anymore. I had a three year contract (purchased computer from initial owner unused) and was told I had the rest of it. After the first year they deleted the 2 extra years which I had seen on numerous occasions in the past, and I can't even talk to a human because I have "no" coverage. Otherwise, I would have called them right off.

I did try changing the usb ports, and I discovered that there is a 1 second window where the usb port is on right at startup (I could tell by the little green light on the keyboard) so I started pressing keys as soon as I saw that, and it was enough for the Windows Installation DVD to start. So, I've deleted the Windows partition and am reinstalling to that partition now. I will let you know how this turns out. Thank you very much for your suggestions. And a PS2 port may be something to think about on my next machine as a backup! So you're saying you don't have these on the back of your machine ? ?

.Sometimes resetting you BIOS to defaults fixes this problem
when you don't have PS/2 capability.

Jumpers on motherboard,or CMOS battery is the normal route.Patio- YES, those ports are NOT on the back (or front) of my machine. I had to purchase a ps2-to-usb connector initially in order to use my older mouse.

Update- I am continuing to reinstall Windows and all the drivers. So far so good. I was told by Dell forum people that the first driver to update is the Desktop Management driver (on Dell machines) which includes support for all kind of USB connections. It's also called smb driver (System Management something).
I hope these bits help someone else down the road when they encounter this problem. I'll ADD to this as I learn more about it.Actually Dell does a very good job on their support info in most cases...if not the Forums there have tons of info.
