Solve : psu dead??

Answer»

ok i have a antec high efficiency 500watt power supply unit.

My problem is when i plug it only into the MOTHERBOARD the computer turns on and works fine. but if i plug anything like a cd drive or hhd it just give me a 1 sec burst so the fans spin a little then it stops. i press it again and it does same thing.i have two small CHASSIS fans that i can plug into one of the normal plugs of my power supply, if it just them it can boot up fine.

i guess my question is what else can i try before i SAY it's toast?

ps- if i only got motherboard plugged in when i turn it on then plug in cd drive and hdd while it running. It will run fine although then it does not detect them so it fails to boot os.borrow a friend's and if his works just fine, then ya urs is toast.I don't have access to another PSU that would work with this setup. never mind you can end this post i figured it out

it had something to do with chassis fan it wasn't plugged in well or sumthin.....

Solve : Odd problem -- impossible to diagnose?

Answer»

At least, not with anything I KNOW of.

When I boot my computer, sometimes -- *sometimes* -- when I get to the WinXP splash screen, a BSOD will flash for a second, then my computer will reboot. Here's the odd part: Subsequent boots never have the BSOD. At this point, I'm thinking "*censored*?". I can't really troubleshoot if I can't even see the BSOD, can I?

Problem is, I'm having this problem more and more often. I'm seriously considering wiping the Kubuntu drive (nothing major on it, anyway) and moving my important files over, followed closely by a hard drive wipe. Before I do something this drastic, however, I'd like to know if there are any measures I can take first.

Straight off the top of my head, this sounds like hardware, HDD or RAM, or conceivably PSU. Thermal related, a RAM module not quite snug when cold but OK a minute later as it warms?, a loose power connector maybe to a disk drive, a damaged or loose IDE/SATA cable, that sort of thing. At least I would try to eliminate each thing. There is a program called Memtest that can test your RAM for errors. Also I'd do a thorough Scandisk on my boot drive.

Are you saying that now and then the first boot of the day throws a bsod when you get to the Windows XP splash with the animated blue bar? Right at the start of that, or part way through? And after that later boots are OK?

Is there anything in the Event Log (Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Event Viewer) that ties in with the times it happens? If it happens after the event logging service is started up, there may be clues in there. A certain service or driver EVERY time, comparing logs of good boots with logs of bad ones? A warning such as "disk error"? Maybe even a summary of the bsod message.

Event ID 6009 seems to be the first thing recorded, then you can see later events until the bsod maybe...

I would certainly have a look around inside the caseOh well, one of my guesses was right. People do say Maxtors run hot. I had one bite the dust a few months back, it had a partition for my XP swap file, it wasn't until it started clicking at any swap activity and freezing the machine that I came out of hardware-failure-denial.

The event log was full of red "error" icons.

I'm on mother's lappy right now. I need a new hdd, looking at Seagates. 350 GB for $75. Not bad. I really don't need that much space, but I can't find anything smaller. Crap, I'm gonna be out a *very* nice computer for a few weeks.Yipee! 300 GB SATA formatting as I speak! I'll be back on the Net in a day or TWO. Oy. I am a living Windows "Est. Time Left" counter. I always overestimate. I'm back on the Net, all old protections up and running. Time to see if I can slave my old hdd and get files off of it, then it's history.

Anyone know a good way to destroy an old hdd so noone takes the data? Quote from: Dilbert on August 18, 2007, 04:58:36 PM

Is that Peter Noone you're worried about? Out of Herman's Hermits? No one ELSE?

Uh... wha?

No, I just don't want anyone else getting their hands on my stuff. Ah, forget it. BB gun works well.

I'm getting the data off that old hdd now. I have no further use for a dying 200GB hdd when my new one is another 100 GB yet, but I'd rather not have personal data in the hands of strangers as I chuck this. Quote from: Dilbert on August 18, 2007, 05:18:16 PM

You wrote "noone" when I think you meant "no one". Peter Noone was a famous 1960s singer in a band called Herman's Hermits, and his name is usually brought up by *censored* spelling professors in such circumstances.

Solve : Do I have a hard drive or RAM problem? Or maybe something else entirely??

Answer»

Yep, I have tested each stick individually, and in the first and last and middle slots too.And the results were.....I still get errors regardless of which stick is being tested and which slot it is in.Remove both sticks and clean the contacts with a SOFT toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol.
Clean out the RAM slots with a can of compressed air.
Re-seat one stick at a time and re-run memtest.
If you are still getting errors return the RAM for replacement.
If the new RAM tests BAD also then the RAM slots themselves are bad and you may have to replace the MBoard. Can it be possible also if that's the case where my RAM is not compatible with my motherboard?Yes of course. Unlikely because usually I don't think the motherboard WOULD let you get past the BIOS. Post the exact RAM specifications or the make and model of them. I'll check them against this motherbaord: http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K8NGM2-NBP

What's happened about the harddrive, has that been replaced or run diagnostics on yet? It doesn't have to have bad sectors or data to be crapping out. They are not physical checks, only data checks. If you have not done so already, back up ALL required data in case of a PERMANENT hard disk failure.

There are THREE things, you may only need to replace one, you may need to replace all of them, I don't know at this stage; Hard disk, memory, motherboard.

Something I found on your motherboard site:
Quote

• Dual-channel DDR works ONLY in the 3 combinations listed in the table shown above.
• Please select the identical memory modules to install on the dual channel, and DO NOT install three memory modules on three DIMMs, or it may cause some failures.
• Always insert the memory modules into the GREEN slots first, and it is strongly recommended not to insert the memory modules into the PURPLE slots while the GREEN slots are left empty.
• This mainboard DO NOT support the memory module installed with more than 18 pieces of IC (integrated circuit).
• The Maximum memory speed decreases when the following two memory combination is selected:
- Each channel is installed with two double-sided memory module
- Both DIMM1 and DIMM3 are installed with double-sided memory module
• Due to the South Bridge resource deployment, the system density will only be detected up to 3+ GB (not full 4GB) when each DIMM is installed with an 1GB memory module
The size of that message was unneccesary...Sorry man, I typed instead of .

Solve : X1300 Visiontek Videocard 4 big problems?

Answer»

Well im throwing this topic in while i go mess around with this videocard until i get it to work or I send it in to be replaced or something. So here is my problem and im hoping SOMONE suggests something by the next 2 days lol.

Please note that ths is a new installation of windows, and ive had other problems on my last windows, hense the format, but now i have new problems.

1. My card O/C's itself. Ya its the most retarded thing i read too, but its true. No matter what i do, i cant work without Atitool or atitry Having to run at the startup and Downclock the X1300 down or else it will "wtfrape" me with the Blue screen of death, or i the video drivers will crash and my screen will go blank (from overheating and a crapload of ARTIFACTS). (this problem was present in the previous windows, and this current one)

2. at some random time (mostly when im playing GAMES or watching a video), the video drivers will crash, making my game freeze and then a blank screen appearing, the only way to recover from the crash without a hard restart, is to go nuts Alt tabing in and out of the game BEFORE the screen goes blank. I know ive succeded if the MONITOR blacks out for a sec and my game comes back on. (this problem also occured with previous Windows installation)

3. When playing games, for some weird and unknown reason, when i put my games to low Resolution, my fps goes DOWN!!. I get more (or same) fps if im at 1680X1050 than 1024/768 ! how is that possible? I dont get it. For example, I get 15-35 FPS when im at such high rez and i get the same FPS if im at the lowest res that i can go to.

4. The card gets unusually hot, especially on the edges of the board, u can fry an egg on that. I have 3 fans (the main one , and 2 on the back of the videocard) to try to keep it cool Mainly when windows is starting up. the 2 fans i think give me 2-3 more seconds of stability before a crash .

My specs:

2.4 GHz intel
1 Gig ram
550 watts PSU
asrock p4vm890
And a Magnificent X1300 PCI-E 512MB card

PS . when the Card O/C's at the startup, Its clock read "596 CORE, 810 mem, or maybe its the otherway around, so ya i only have a few seconds for ati tool to start and downclock the card before it crashes the pc, as u can see.

I also changed drivers, downloaded omega drivers, downloaded the 7.1 drivers, they all giving me the same issue. I just formated 3 days ago and im hoping i dont have to format again ..

thanks and cheersIt obviously doesn't like the overclocked settings...set it back to default and re-install the original drivers that came with it
New drivers are not always better drivers...lol patio, i dunno wat it is, but i guess u didnt understand me...

The card overclocks itself (problem number 1). What i Do is Reset the clock speeds of the core and memory at each startup by using ATItool. I Reset the clock speeds to default when using ATItool, I dont Overclock it, I downclock it to defaults.

Solve : Upgrading RAM (URGENT!)?

Answer»

I'm upgrading my RAM to 4GB and i'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. I've heard mixed opinions about what exactly it will recognize, and i'm curious as to whether or not i made a bad choice. Haven't installed the 4GB yet. Should i even install it? Also, i've recently upgraded from 1GB to 2GB and and its using 800 to 900MB just idling. Is that normal?Vista 32 will not be able to utilize the full 4gb so it's just a waste of ram.
Check this site out for an explanation:
http://www.crucial.com/kb/answer.asp?qid=4251

The amount of memory the system uses while idling depends on how many programs you've got running in the background. You might want to review the programs that starts up automatically with windows and SEE if you really need them.I predict no appreciable difference except less $$$$. Well, you were right Deerpark. It Only recognizes 2.99GB, even though my bios shows 4. But i only paid $45 more than what 2GB cost. Thanks though. You got 2 gig RAM for $45. Please elaborate on this. Inquiring minds want to know.T_blake if you dont want the extra ram send it my way LOL, sorry. I paid $225 for 2GB and $270 for 4GB.(3 actually )

Luckily Best Buy Refunded my $225 For the 2GB. Sorry, But i got 2, 512GB sticks here if anyone's interested. Quote from: t_blake07 on August 16, 2007, 06:32:06 PM

But i got 2, 512GB sticks here if anyone's interested.
AWESOME 512 "GB"

About the 900 mb ram used while idling, Vista has a new feature that loads programs into RAM that it expects you will run BASED on which programs you run the most. On my computer (it's only got 1 GB RAM running home premium) if I just turned my computer on the system seems kinda slow. If I wait a few minutes the system feels much more responsive because Vista loaded lots of stuff into RAM. When you run programs that need a lot of RAM Vista unloads the stuff you aren't using.Quote from: t_blake07 on August 16, 2007, 06:32:06 PM
But i got 2, 512GB sticks here if anyone's interested.
How much you OFFERING OK, i see now. My system does the same Soviet. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, 512GB.... U know what i mean. unless your willing to pay for 512"GB"!?

Solve : Looking for a Laptop?

Answer»

If possible, I would like to buy a laptop within the 7-800 dollar range. I'll mostly use it school and gaming (World of Warcraft: BC, would be the most graphics heavy game I'd play).

Any suggestions for a prebuilt? WELL I dont like prebuilt Laptops, but that kinda the only THING u can get. HP Laptops tend to a have a crapload of "HP User advantage" programs that only clog up the laptop, and also they are full of ads so by the time u buy the thing, HP would have already PAID for PARTS in Ads and they make the 800 bucks profit. HP's are good but they are full of garbage. on the other hand They have the hardware to be able to play WoW and such.

May i ask though, why would u play games on ur laptop? invest in a cheap laptop for school and buy urself a desktop for about the same price as a nice LOADED laptop

Solve : Sound slows down??

Answer»

Hello! This is my first post here, which is probably apparent from my post count.

I've been having this problem for weeks now, and can't find a way to solve it.

I am using an HP Pavilion DV6000, Windows XP, (if ADDITIONAL INFORMATION is required please tell me ) and the problem is that when I am watching videos, or listening to music, after a minute or so (mostly shorter) the sound starts to slow down - it becomes sluggish and in slow-motion.

Please help.
Thanks!ok does the entire movie slow down... or
does the sound not match up with the picture? like you see dog bark...2 seconds pass......you hear it?Are u watching a DVD? a video clip? whats running in the background (in terms of processes) when you are doing that?

GO to Start>run and type msconfig then go to startup tab and uncheck anything that u dont want to start at every BOOTUP. Make sure also that when ur watching a video, that u dont have anything else running that demands alot of cpu power. When did u notice this happening btw?

Solve : Dvd making trouble!!?

Answer»

I made a video on windows MOVIE maker! Then i wanted to PUT it on a DVD-r disc to play it on my dvd player. I used nero! Then i went to play it on my dvd player and it didn't work! There could be about a million reasons for that.
For example not all dvd players like burned dvds and might only read certain brands or dvd burned at slow speeds. Have you used burned dvds on that dvd player before?

Also how did you burn it in Nero?I never made a dvd before so i have no idea what to do?Answering the QUESTIONS would be a great start.
my advice always burn at the slowest or a low speed X12 for the first disk
and second test the disk with the same computer or better yet another computer to see if it reads it properly, but like they said earlier some
dvd players don't like burned disks(maybe try another dvd player in ur case)

GOOD LUCK!
try to play the DVD that u made on ur pc and see if it works.

Solve : OMG Going Insane with PC Issue!!!?

Answer» Ok So I went on a trip and My husband calls to tell me he got an error message. Something about Hardware failure and it was shutting down to prevent further damage. I have a Dell XPS 410 CUSTOM made for my gaming . 2 gigs memory Invidia Video Card. Ok so I come home and He tells me that it will now not boot up. When I turn it on the green light comes on you hear the fan running and it SOUNDS as if something is working in there. But The monitor is automatically put in standby mode. Thanks. ok so do u hear a beep at the startup? if not then were u able to hear a beep sound everytime u start ur pc before?
Also did he tell u when/where/how he got the error? (as in what he was doing on it). Try to press F2 or Delete button when u start the pc, and c if u can get into bios and c if all hardware is DETECTED and u might wanna load default values and save them to see if that works. what happens when u press a key once u get that "press any key" message?ok so Finally Dell gets back to me. Seems my hard drive FAILED and memory sticks were also damaged. They are replacing them as it turns out I did buy the extended warranty. YAY for me... Thanks for replying. Solve : 2 computers 2 dead HDDs?

Answer»

Ok if someone else on earth did something as dumb as this and the solution is somewhere on this board just refer me to it, thanks.

I attempted to add a 20gig HDD from one "older" computer PentiumIII533 to a "newer" 1.7gig celeron.

My list of sins, and ommisions in the process sets me up to be voted stupidest guy ever.

I plugged them onto the same ribbon without resetting any jumpers, I didn't change the name (C:) for either drive, I didn't have a boot disk made up ahead of time, and when it didn't work no big suprise I just spent a LOT of time swapping hardware around pretty much randomly til I can't really remember now what was done when.

So...

What have I done from a hardware/CMOS/BIOS point of view?

If the two boxes with their original HDDs back in PLACE now won't even boot far enough to read from the floopy drive can I hope to recover either?

Is this actually the dumbest thing you've ever heard of anyone doing to two perfectly good machines?

If you put the 2 hard DRIVES back in thier pc's and u dont see them booting that means u probably did something in the cmos, because i dont think putting 2 harddrives on 1 computer can possisbly wreck the 2. Did u move the jumpers from master to slave on the hdd? if u did put them both back to Master , and when u wanna put them together in the same computer put 1 master 1 slave, the computer itself will name the drives for u. Im assuming u have 2 windows installations on both drives, which means that if u have both as master, then u can have problems.
Make sure u go to ur bios and load the default settings on each computer (it will tell u wat button to press to go into settings/bios). When the hard drives are on different PC's set them both as master, when u wanna put them on 1 computer, put 1 master, 1 slave. or 1 master, 1 cable select. They should both be recognized once u do that and everything should be fine. Remember press F8 to go into boot menu and choose which windows u wnana load up.

GLThanks for the reply.

I REALIZE I didn't put much detail in my original post. THe reason is my errors were many and varied and I figured it would make for easier demangling if I waited for folks to post possible fixes, most all of which I have actually already tried, with zero success.

SO, in fact I changed the jumpers, then changed them back when the drives went back into their respective towers.

Going to BIOS is the real problem at this point, I've tried to get at BIOS for both machines, but after counting RAM, and giving me an all clear post POST beep neither machine will not go past that point and I can't get them to F8 or anything. First of all we don't even know yet what version of Windows is on either machine...
2nd we know nothing about either machine...

Post alot more info and maybe we can find a solution to your current dilemna...The beginning would be to choose 1 computer and concentrate on it.

Leave the hard drive IDE cable and the power plug unattached and
see if you can get to the BIOS then.

Edit:Plus what patio said.

Any amount of ram probably wouldn't make a considerable difference as the clock speeds are just too low for gaming at a resolution of 1440 x 900 on med-high settings. So do I need a better graphics card or is it pointless? What is a decent one to look for? Can my graphics card be upgraded at all?
I am not a gamer but I do like to play some games such as Sims.
Thanks so much for the responses.Sims does not require a high-end graphics card, so at the right settings your gameplay should be fine.

No, it's highly unlikely that your video card will be upgradeable, though you probably don't need it; it's better than integrated graphics.Quote from: DeltaSlaya on August 18, 2007, 05:25:15 PM

Yes I am. Read the specifications. I did and I saw the same thing you did, which in no way indicates a video "card" is installed. Do the specifications say anything about a PCI Express slot, or AGP slot, or PCI slot? Can you tell me any laptops that have them? WELL I don't mean a 'card' as such, I'm more a desktop oriented guy. I just mean that it's made by Nvidia or ATi I guess?? lolQuote from: DeltaSlaya on August 18, 2007, 05:25:15 PM

OK, see my point now? It IS integrated graphics, based on the nVidia GeForce Go 6150 GPU. Laptops simply aren't upgradeable in ways that desktop PC's usually are.Thank you all for your responses. I use my computer mainly for internet ACCESS, and photo editing so I suppose that the gaming aspect will not effect my usage much at all.

Solve : CD/DVD drive PLEASE!?

Answer»

Doesn't anyone out there know what I might have overlooked. >:(Viao Sony Notebook with optional optical driver DSM51-CD-RW/DVD or DSM5. XP Windows Operating System.

Seems like everything has gone wrong after downloading SP2. My CD's play fine, sound is great. HOWEVER, when I recently played a DVD, there was a picture, but no sound. I WENT into the volume CONTROL, everything was fine. Chatted with a Sony TECH. person, she advised me to download the original driver. I did, and not only did I have no sound, but the picture got distorted and went black and I received a "stop error" message. Boy was I pissed. Anyway, followed instructions for the stop error, that didn't work either. Went back to Sony, spoke with another tech. person. He reassure me that Changing the BIOS WOULD definitely work. No way. Went back again, against my better judgement, and was again give another link "procedure to troubleshoot the CD/DVD drive. Driver is enabled, no hardward conflict, no viruses. Check ed Device Manager, all clear there. Even had a search for updated driver. couldn't find a better match. I also attached an external drive, and the same thing happen, a picture, but no sound. So I'm really confused. Unfortunately, I can't go into safe mode, because it keeps kicking me back to normal. So does anyone out there have any further advise. Thanks.

Solve : NTFS.sys?

Answer»

I have bought a SATA HDD 750GB capacity which is installed on Windows XP prof PLATFORM computer (Primay HDD 160GB is PATA). After installation the SYSTEM is getting rebooted with a BLUE screen saying that "The problem seems to be caused by the following file : NTFS.sys PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA"

Is there any tool which is used to check the HDD?

Please guide me to fix this issue.

Some Google hits on NTFS.sys PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA discuss a problem with RAM as the culprit for this error message. Did you remove your RAM when you installed the hard drive? Perhaps you should check it to make sure it's properly seated in the slot(s).

By the way, why the poll? It makes absolutely no sense?

Solve : 1 printer-2 computers?

Hope this is the correct site.
I have a Windows 98 and a Windows xp.
I have a wireless router which i"m using wired.
I have a cable modem.
I have a HP Printer.
I would LIKE to connect both computers to this printer.
How would the BEST way to do this be?
Thanks,
John
If you have the printer connected to the Win XP COMPUTER, see Share Your Printer Over a Home Network Using Windows XP. If the printer is connected to the Win 98 computer, you may need additional references. You might download a document from Microsoft on File and Printer Sharing with Microsoft Windows. My Windows 98 is connected to the printer.
Windows 98 and Windows xp are both connected to the router.
Would like the printer to work on both pcs.
Thank-You
John
Can you download the document provided my Microsoft in the second LINK I POSTED? It's a Word document and has info specifically on Win 98/Win Me.

Solve : Add a hard drive??

Answer»

I have a master drive, a Samsung, in my HP computer with a Windows XP Home Edition operating system on it. Now I have taken a hard drive out of one of my other PC's that is an IBM but not as big and not as fast. It has Windows XP Professional Edition OS on it. I want to add that hard drive onto the HP as a slave drive and leave the Samsung as the master drive. How do I do it? Is it just a matter of plugging it in and LETTING Windows find it, or will there be a CONFLICT between the two operating systems? Also, when the IBM drive was in the other pc it was the Master drive. Do I have to change the switch pins in the back of it to make it a slave drive?
A great thanks to whoever can help. There can be only one master and one slave. Check the drives. Each should show how to SET the jumpers at the back of the drive for master/slave/cable select. Jumper them accordingly and you shouldn't have any problems. Although this is no guarantee as there can be compatibility issues between manufacturers'.

Alan <><

I'm sorry for seeking a clarification, but the fact that they will both have an operating system on them, and DIFFERENT ones at that, will not be a problem? That's not a problem. As long as the original drive is jumpered as master, that's what the system will boot from. Win XP Pro, on the second/slave drive, will simply be ignored.

Solve : Strange any Help??

Answer»

Ok,here's the deal, I put windows back on my computer after SOMETHING or anthor happened and I use a Linksys wireless network card to GET internet off a computer that sits out in the living room, now I went on the SITE for Linksys because they have a self fix tool that will get all the DRIVERS needed etc, ( I hooked my computer up to the LAN line in the living room)EVERYTHING was set couple days go by and I decide to move it to a different room,so I do and when I turn it on it shows me the found new hardware setup screen, for the network card ! so I shut it down take it back out to the LAN line and when I start it up it is acting fine,so then I'm thinking ok??? so I take it back in the room and it does it again , until I finally had too take it out there ,do it all again just in case and brought it back sat the computer up higher...and its been fine but I just shut it down because of the heat it generates in the room , then turned it back on and boom did it again, I then restarted it and it was fine Your computer wireless link could possibly have
the AFDB syndrome.

Maybe you will need to find what is blocking the signal.

------->AFDB The aerial is coated in Aluminium Solid Foil? Or is there a beanie on it?

Is the computer in question a laptop? What do you mean you get internet off a computer that sits in the living room? Sorry I don't follow the sentence structure.

If it's giving you the add new hardware screen for a wireless card then perhaps it was never installed correctly or was knocked out. Try downloading appropriate drivers / software and then removing the card and removing it from device manager. (Right-click My Computer > Manage > Device Manager > Networking stuff).

Solve : Replace IDE Hard Drive with SCSI?

Answer»

I have a U160 RAID controller and a PAIR of 68pin SCSI drives laying around that I was thinking of installing in my computer. The idea is to replace my IDE Hard drive with the SCSI drives and set up a mirrored partition. The drives are 18GB so they'd only be good for my Windows but here's what I'm thinking:

1. 10K drives will certainly improve OS PERFORMANCE, right?
2. Will the RAID 1 slow down any improvements I might notice from adding the 10K drives?
3. Is U160 fast?
4. How do I terminate the SCSI connection on the RAID CARD that will be outside of the PC?

Thanks for the help,

PO1. Possibly, depends on applications being used.
2. No it won't make it run slower, or it shouldn't.
3. I assume 160 refers to the MB/s? If so it's better than a 133MB/s IDE but slower than a 300MB/s SATA-II.
4. Disable it in DEVICE Manager? If it comes up there.

Solve : Processor question...?

Answer»

I'm looking for a computer for my mom, she wanted a new laptop and while searching for her, I FOUND a really nice laptop on sale and everything looked great in it except for the processor. It had an AMD Sempron 3500 processor. I don't know much about this type of processor, is it the equivalent of a CELERON? If so I'll just tell her to pay an extra $50 and have them upgrade the processor to an Athlon 64 Dual Core. Thanks for the help!your exactly right *

sempron AMD / celeron Intel

There's nothing wrong with a sempron for surfing the net and basic word processing etc...

A dual -core would be nice though, if your inclined to spend the extra bling...Thanks! I thought they were equivalent, but I wasn't 100% sure. Check the pricing on a laptop with an AMD 3800 CPU...you may be pleasantly surprised. Thanks PATIO I'll definitely look into that. yah some of the 3800's are cheaper. Otherwise if she is not gaming or video editing she will be fine.Yeah, she's not going to be gaming or editing anything. Mostly just word processing applications. Thanks guys! You've been a lot of help!t
The 3800 gives quite a bit of bang for the buck...just ordered one myself.I know this is an old thread now, but just to let everyone know we got my mom a refurbished laptop from Dell with an Athlon 64 X2 processor. She loves it. Now I'm jealous. As long as Mom is happy...what ELSE MATTERS in Life ? ?

That's right Patio, cause if mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy.

Any hardware changes been made recently? Did this happen all of a sudden, or have you seen some gradually increasing symptoms of a problem developing?i had put a second hard drive in it about a week before it happed. I just woke up nd turned on the computer ONE morning, nd thats what it gave me.Can you access your BIOS and see whether it's recognizing both drives? Is that second drive for additional storage space or do you have programs installed on it?

Are both drives IDE (i.e. not SATA) drives?

As a test, you might disconnect the second drive and see whether you can boot up from your original drive.
Yea,, i can access my BIOS, and it reads both drives. right now i only have one drive connected. there both IDE drivesoh and the second drive is only extra space for music and such.I think the HDD are not detected. Try to enter in BIOS setup then see if the your HDD has been detected by the CMOS. Then if its detected. then make the your HDD the first boot device.Quote from: juanfishnet on August 20, 2007, 10:54:38 PM

Someone help!

but on which side should I place it?

It honestly does not matter.

I think I'd want the BOTTOM side, the side showing the circuit board, down. That way, it's not exposed to dust (harder to clean than the top side) and I think you don't want to RISK things touching that side of the drive while it's running.Good point, Soybean. Also I suppose it's a good idea to keep the drive horizontal, not inclined at an angle, so the spindle bearings get lubed consistently.

Solve : Disk Drive not reading disks?

Answer»

My computer has stopped reading disks all together. I cant install programs or anything. Ive tried going to the drive itself and manually opening the program but its not even there because the disk drive doesnt even spin and read the disk. help?Exactly what happens when you try to start the computer? What do you see on screen? How far does it get?

Have noticed any unusual noises from the drive before this happened? How old is it?

What make and model computer is this? Tell us the specs on it.

Everything else on the computer is fine. Dont know all the specs for it since its new to me and I bought it from a friend. But the computer itself is not even a year old I believe. Its an HP Desktop. Thats all I know at the moment since its at my other house (parents divorced). The only irregular thing is the disk drive doesnt make that normal sound of it spinning on startup you know? Check the CABLING to the drive...there will be 2 connectors, a WIDE flat ribbon connecter and a 4 pin power connecter. Make sure they are both SNUGLY connected.
The only way to determine if the drive has failed is to swap it into a known working machine...if it STILL doesn't run replace it.
This is simple enough for you to do yourself. Just take your time and make sure the power is removed and take anti static precautions.

Solve : SATA HDD disappeared?

Answer»

Yesterday night, my house RCD tripped while I'm uploading file to internet. After recovered PC power, I found that my SATA HDD disappeared from WINDOWS XP HDD list - other 2 IDE HDD, FDD, DVD drives & movable drive remained. I opened device manager, selected drives icon and right clicked on it then forced it to scan for hardware change. Device manager didn't found the SATA drive.

However, every time I rebooted the PC, BIOS reported existence of the SATA HDD. I tried connect that SATA HDD to SATA0 then 1 of my gigabyte GA-8S655FX(-L) motherboard (my motherboard had 2 available SATA ports). Each time BIOS could found the HDD drive.

Was my SATA dead ? If no, how could I make XP to discover it again ?Verify Windows has the correct SATA DRIVER installed.Irrelevant, the SATA HDD worked normal before the incident! How is it irrelevant? It wouldn't be the first time a driver got corrupted by a power outage.Hook up the SATA into a known WORKING machine to see if it works...

Solve : DVD-RW CD Drive dead....?

2 weeks ago I tried installing some software, which TOOK forever. I noticed that my DISK drive was making strange clicking noises, ect. Today I tried installing something I bought several HOURS ago, it clicks, and starts up and stops several times, and doesnt SHOW up at all. Do I need to buy another drive? how do I fix this.

ps. im certain the disk is fine, its brand NEW. I have Virtual Daemon Manager running in the background which has never caused problems, so I ruled that out. The device manager says its working fine. How do I fix this?have u tried using a dvd lens clenerA clicking sound is the sound of a hard drive failure.
First get rid of Daemon Tools completely...you can always re-install it.
Then DLoad and run the diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site and see if that hard drive is failing...
If so back up your data iIMMEDIATELY...you may only get one chance.
Post back with your results and we'll go from there...

Solve : Quick question, please read...?

Answer»

I have a computer that I just put together. I have everything put into the case except for a processor.

Here's the question...

With the POWER plugged in, and the monitor hooked up, I turn the computer on. Should I see anything on the screen (such as POST), or a blank screen and the monitor LIGHT just keep blinking?

It's BASICALLY an identical computer to the other one I had... different case and motherboard, that's it. The video (AGP) went out and the video card tested fine in anther computer.

I transfered it all out into another case and new motherboard, hooked everything up, plugged it in, and turned it on expecting to see POST run... but I get nothing but a blank screen and the blinking monitor power light. Keep in mind there is no CPU in it. But I'm still thinking POST should run or am I wrong? Everything SEEM fine?it needs the CPU....Ok great... that's good news to me. Solve : Lost CD Rom drive?

I am using windows XP HOME, and I have run into a problem. My son was using my pc and he said he got a "blue screen " crash. He REMOVED all the USB devices and was able to find out that the mouse was causing the problem. He installed a new mouse and the problem went away( at least I hope so) Today I purchased a new wireless keyboard and mouse by Logitech and installed them. I got them connected and they run well. I went to install the software and put the cd in and it started to go but nothing happened. I went to my computer and there wasn't a drive for the cd rom, instead there was an icon that was for a "mobile device"which I assumed was the keyboard and mouse.I am not sure if this loss is due to the keyboard mouse or the blue screen error. How can I GET my cd rom drive to show up and work?

You have some awesomely sub $30 gfx cardsbecause i just used $60 on rams and i need to be cheap yet be able to play games can thoes card run tf2? i suck at thistf2 is Team Fortress 2 I assume so....

Team Fortress 2 Minimum System Requirements
CPU: 1.2 GHz Processor
RAM: 256 MB
Graphics Card: DirectX 7 capable graphics card
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection
CD or DVD rom drive

Team Fortress 2 Recommended System Requirements
CPU: 2.4 GHz Processor
RAM: 512 MB
Graphics Card: DirectX 9 capable graphics card 256 MB
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection
CD or DVD rom drive

Team Fortress 2 IDEAL System Requirements
For running the game smooth in 1280x1024 with High Quality graphics.

CPU: 3.4 GHz Processor
RAM: 1024 MB
Graphics Card: Radeon X800 or Geforce 6800
Windows 2000/XP/ME/98
Mouse
Keyboard
Internet Connection
CD or DVD rom drive

So as long as you buy graphics card that supports directx 7, then it will work. Since directx 7 is a really old technology, as directx 9 and 10 are what's out.... you should be able to get gfx cards like those from link i already posted and it'll run the game easily.awesome!!!! thanks for the help
btw can you please post a link directly to a video card? because im not sure which one you are directing me to o.OWhat graphics port do you have?

Yes, it's an AGP slot. You didn't have to take that screenshot though, as an Intel 8xx chipset can only have an AGP slot.

It was a very poor choice to spend all your MONEY on RAM, as the Video Card matters a *censored* of a lot more.
This is what you should buy:

That is good card . If you really want cheaper cards. Although you can get $30 or less cards, you most likely can not run the game tf2 because you do have to have the 256mb.

here are few more cards to consider from same site if you don't want to get anywhere close to $100.:

Just to reiterate what the others have said, you'll need to spend much more than $30 to play modern games.
How much RAM do you have now?
And no, I don't use AIM.i have 1.2gb and it was not a waste of money i think the rams was a nice thing to buy not my computer is better. and i thank everyone for showing me the wayyes, you do need the ram. So at least 1gb is good. now, get yourself a graphics card. Just look at the $20 or $30 more than youre original budget of $30 and you will have a card that can run it, and can last you for a while. So you can't be too cheap on yourself. Otherwise you'll end up having to spend even more money to upgrade when you find out that your next favorite game runs like a snail.

Solve : PS2/USB mouse protocols???

Answer»

not sure if this is the RIGHT forum, but here it goes:

I'm in the process of designing an alternative PS2 or USB input device that will act as a mouse for my brother who is a quadriplegic. The devices available to him are horribly overpriced. Everything is falling into place except for one thing:

Does anyone know where I could find a spec for the communication protocol for either USB or PS2 mice?

Thanks! Here's just one from a Google search for mouse protocol which returned 22.6m hits.

Hope this is what you're looking for.

Good luckNice, I've never heard of something like this being attempted, though I guess if you are good at electronics and converting the appropriate movement into the right signal it wouldn't be too hard. I'd have to say PS/2 would probably be easier, just because I think USB is more circuitboard based.Dusty,

Thanks for the tip. UNFORTUNATELY, I did the same before and WOUND up with all pages describing the physical layer protocol- the actual signals on the wires. What I Need is the commands and data that is send by a PS2 mouse so I can program my device to act just like a mouse.

DeltaSlaya,

YEAH it's pretty easy, even with USB. They make chips now that are TTL serial input from a microcontroller and USB output. Should be a fun PROJECT.Here is a hex representation of commands. Again hope this helps.

As you say, it will be an interesting project, I hope your health insurance covers mental breakdown. LOL

Good luck

Solve : BSOD on startup AND windows setup?

Answer»

So a customer brought a laptop into my shop a few days ago. it was getting a BSOD error, BAD_POOL_CALLER. I thought ok, maybe bad ram. I tested the ram with several VERSIONS of memtest. came BACK FINE. I switched it out with a known good stick of ram, still the same thing. then I tested the hard DRIVE with a couple different programs including quicktech pro. came back fine. So, I tried reloading it after I got the customer's permission. when I hit enter at the setup screen to start it, SAME BLUE SCREEN!

What puts a huge kink in this case is the fact that this is a CHINESE version of xp pro. so, the on ly media I have is the one supplied by the customer, which came with the laptop.

It's a compaq presario B2000 laptop. specs are same as from factory.

Anyone have any insight on this? I'm at my wit's end.I am seeing this could be a issue with the CPU or Motherboard rather than the HDD or RAM, I had one machine a while back, where I didn't know it but the CPU fan had stopped (Thank God it was only a AMD K6-2 ) and when trying to install Win 2000 it would randomly give bluescreens similar to those, BAD_POOL_HEADER and the like, so check that out first

Solve : Printer Malfunction?

Answer»

I have a Canon i455 printer connected to my PC running onWindows ME. Last WEEK it printed twelve photos perfectly which I had just downloaded. I then wanted to type a letter from WORD but it would not oblige. When asked to print a test page the Windows motif is printed in the correct colours but although the printer sounds as if it is printing text, the page is blank.

I have been through all the suggestions in the help pages from both Windows and Canon without SUCCESS. I have today purchased two new ink cartridges and neither has cured the problem.

Can anyone help me please? Many thanks, Peter Edward.Do you know if the printer has print heads seperate from the ink cartridges? I've seen print head nozzles get plugged and lose a color. Looks like you have all color but BLACK right? For the fact that the test page showed the Windows Motif, but no text?

If not sure, open your printer lid if like 99% of other printers where the ink cradle will present itself to you at Center. TAKE a q-tip with a little rubbing alcohol and wipe the underside of the ink cradle . There might be 2 round objects at bottom which are the print heads for the Inkjet.

Higher end printers also have a button to push to purge print heads of obstructions and dried ink. Might be called Clean Print Nozzle or something like that. Otherwise in your printer properties it may have a Print Nozzle purge or clean feature.

Good Luck.. DAVE

Solve : IBM 300gl, Problem Number One: Power Supply?

Answer»

Well I recieved a IBM 300gl tower for free, and it had barely any parts in it. I thought it would be a good project, and a good way to get some computer experience by getting it back in running. So the first problem, the power supply is blown. Can I get a power supply that puts out more watts then the old one? Or do I have to get the exact same one. The power supply that CAME with it gave out a max of 145 watts, and i've found a couple of the same power supplys on the internet. But it would be easier for me to get one with a higher wattage. I understand that if it had less then 145watts that would make sense, but how about Over? My thoughts is it'll fry the thing.

Any help would be GREAT More power will not fry the machine at all...i'd recommend at least 350W and make sure it is the right form factor.Quote

More power will not fry the machine at all...i'd recommend at least 350W and make sure it is the right form factor.
That just made my day. Can I ask what you mean by Right Form Factor? I looked it up and what I found is, something about specifics in motherboards and stuff. So you want me to make sure I get a power supply that will plug correctly into my motherboard?Correct.
You can visit PCPower and Cooling and they should have more info on what you need...Thank You Patio.Well the Power Supply that came with the computer was a AA20610 Power Supply. I Believe it is a 20pin one so im looking for another 20 pin Power Supply. And I think I can only find these used, not sure. All I did to find the Pin was count the number of Holes on the Power Supply, on the adapter the plugs into the Motherboard and there was 20, so im assuming it is 20. Please correct me if im wrong. Some of those IBM power supplies were a DIFFERENT physical size and so the mounting screw holes are different. It needs to be able to FIT into the case. Try a standard size PSU and see if it actually fits in there and everything lines up before you purchase something that won't work. Thanks Patio, and Gx1 man, ill probably pick up the power supply some time soon, while keeping in mind what you two said. Hopefully I can get this computer to work Make sure you can return it if it doesn't fit, and be sure to post back.YAY, im SUPER happy the power supply im getting is only going to cost me $15 dollars, and im getting WIN2k for the comp for $20. And probably another $50+ to get all the parts it needs I wouldn't hit a dog in the....with a $15.00 PSU...ask them for a name brand you will not spend much more and avoid alot of headaches.

Solve : Radeon 9200SE Won't set to 8x, 4x or even 2x?

Answer»

Hey everybody.

I am having issues with my Radeon 9200SE (128MB)
In Smartgart or ATI TRAY Tools I cannot set the AGP speed above 'off'
I have tried a few things, one uninstalling/reinstalling Chipset drivers then trying again, and BIOS does not have any AGP speed setting at all...Here are my computer specs:

M/B: MSI 648-f Neo
CPU: Intel CELERON P4 2.5GHz (128KB cache, 400MHz FSB)
RAM: 768MB 266mhz
GFX CARD: ATi Radeon 9200SE 128MB 8x
XP SP2 - most updates
Latest ATi 9200 series drivers from site.

This has stumped me ever since I have had this setup.
Thanks in advance
KurtisHave you tried reverting back to the original ATI9200 drivers that shipped with the card ? ?Sadly I don't have the DISK...Anybody know what version shipped with it? I have gone to the ATi site and tried the oldest driver that SUPPORTS it...no luck

If you are using a usb mouse UNPLUG it during the boot process and that might help. After the first time leave the mouse plugged in and boot again.

Sounds crazy but it WORKED for others...

should it be 450W,550W or etc....???are there any MANUAL that can help me to count the total output WATT from my pc?
please, anything about 'how to choose power supply unit'..

To know what wattage you NEED you could TRY an online calculator like this: http://www.journeysystems.com/?powercalcActually, use this site: http://www.extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp

Don't use that other one, this ones a lot better.

Solve : Dual-core processor?

Answer»

I've found the latest PC games require a faster processor speeds. If a game REQUIRES a 3.0GHz processor, would a dual-core processor with specs LISTING speed at 1.8GHz be able to HANDLE 3.0GHz requirements? -- In other words does dual-core mean double the speed (or at least a proportional increase) because there's two processor on the chip?

thanks

JustinNot necessarily. And yes, it should be able to handle it. It may even be BETTER PERFORMANCE if the game supports multithreading well.

Is this CPU a Core 2 Duo by any chance?

Solve : USB Device not recognised?

Answer»

I have a fujitzu external 2.5" 60gb drive. It has been working okay on my pc without any problems until yesterday. Now when it is PLUGGED in it says USB Device not recognised/ unknow device. I have looked in the properties of the unknown device and It says that it has not GOT a driver installed. However my external drive works on a different pc okay. I have never had a driver for this before. It suposts to work with plug and play.

I am starting to think it is not my drive and my pc is at fault.
I have checked out the USB connections and ports but I can't SEE any problems with them. Other things like my camera work okay with the usb connection.

Please could someone advise me.. or even tell me which driver I am suppost to have.

I would be very grateful..Have you tried reinstalling the drivers?Yeah I have tried installing the driver but It would not work.

Any more idea's?Try it on the rear USB ports...A friend's Win XP laptop has a similar problem and I'm trying to sort it out. Plug in the USB disk and the little balloon comes up, identifying the device. Then the Wizard comes up looking for a driver, but none CAME with it (all my research indicates that none should be needed). Sometimes, after two or three iterations of the wizard, Explorer sees the new drive, but sometimes not. When it's SEEN, it works.
Same scenario when I brought over my 1GB pen drive. No driver came with that either, nor have I ever needed on on Win XP.

Ideas? I'm reduced to reinstalling Win XP on the laptop from the recovery CDs.

Solve : No BIOS?

No prob...

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=426322&lang=en&docname=bph07173I tried it, same problem. No BIOS

Do you have a spare keyboard and mouse lying around? Make SURE they are not USB.
Quote
Tried a new drive, keyboard and mouse, no luck.
Sometimes people overlook the simple things, were they PS2, you didn't exactly say so.Mouse and keyboard are both PS2, Tried a different board , nothing. I unplugged the mouse and same thing. It just goes to the HP screen and freezes. Keyboard also freezes, no caps lock ornum lock lights come on. During initial start, I can turn both on and off, but then nothing. So,if you tried another board and by that you MEAN motherboard...

Are you still using the same graphics card ?

Did your Power Supply Unit/PSU accidentally get changed to the wrong
power SETTING for your area ? Like 110/220Volt this is normally easy
to locate.PSU is fine. I was talking about the keyboard earlier. Could it be the processor ?
I thought it should still boot though.
If it was the motherboard, the fans wouldn't run or even come up to the HP screen ?

To clarify, sound and video are integrated on the motherboard. Like I stated earlier,
she never did any upgrades, it's as is when she purchased it. She's never had any problems until this.Quote
If it was the motherboard, the fans wouldn't run or even come up to the HP screen

Not neccessarily...Thanks for the reply, maybe it's the MB after all. I've tried just about everything ELSE, except the $40 phone call to HP. Again, thanks to all, for all the help in trying to resolve this issue. I'm too stubbborn to give up though. How, if any one knows, can I check to see if it's definitely the motherboard?
I downloaded a BIOS update from HP, ran it, still nothing.Actually...

Have you tried a blank, partitioned and formatted HDD?

Then try to run the WIndows installation CD?yes, it reads the cd drive, but does nothing after that. Will it boot with linux.

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadThanks, but I really don't want to go there. I'm looking into a Motherboard now. We'll see what happens. I'll let you guys know.
Thatnks to all, appreciate it.

The power supply still works, but the FAN it in is dead.
