Apart from that, at startup it says Mom.exe error, cannot start program.. and I dont know how to solve this either.
Althought I did figure out what mom.exe is and it seems like it's the ATI Catalysator program or something ..

Anyway these are the speccs for my computer ..

HP Compaq 6715s - Sempron 3600+ / 1024MB / 80GB / 15.4" TFT / Radeon Xpress 1250 / Vista Home Basic

AMD Mobile Sempron 3600+ / 2 GHz
1Gb RAM
O/S is not vista anymore .. the school REINSTALLED XP instead so that they'd run on less memory occupied or something ..
ATI Radeon Xpressl 1250

thats pretty much it..

PLEASE .. i really need to solve this -.- getting on my nerves to stay on cpu for 10 mins and then bluescreen ..The best thing would be to take it back to school and let them look at it for you. It is probably under warranty/guarntee if it is new.

Solve : dvi to dvi OR dvi to vga??

Answer»

If I'm gonna get a graphics CARD for my computer and it has only dvi out...

would the quality that I SEE on my monitor be the same if...

I use a connect directly from graphics card to the dvi port on my monitor vs using a dvi to vga adapter and plugging into the vga port of my monitor?I've used a VGA to DVI adapter (DVI output, monitor uses VGA) and not noticed a real difference in quality.
I would say it would be pretty much the same quality as using a graphics card with a VGA output. So you mean DVI does not have too much difference in picture quality than VGA?

So DVI to VGA with VGA/DVI adapter is same as DVI to DVI direct connector?Vga is ANALOG and DVI is 100% digital. When you're doing conversions from analog to digital some quality is going to be lost. However, that being said I think it really depends more on the display and video card you're using than the CONNECTION you're using to connect to it.

You'll likely notice some improvements in more graphic intensive programs (e.g. games) and DVD or high-def movies. When using pure DVI with no VGA conversions.

If you want it really broken down check out this article.Quote from: elxr06 on September 30, 2007, 02:05:37 PM

What I'm saying is that I personally haven't seen a difference.
Others with KEENER eyes may do.

Solve : an error message popped out when I tried to?

Answer»

An error message popped out after I unplugged an external USB HDD from my Windows XP.
Here is that error:

Could anyone help me?
I just don't know what's happened!
This means whatever you were working on when you un-plugged the HDD all that data is lost.
Did you use the USB device connection WIZARD to turn the drive off before unplugging ? ?
This is kinda important to do especially with HDD's...

We might be looking at alot of RAW here...Quote

I had tried to unplug the HDD by choosing the option of Safe Hardware Remove, but it just said
the HDD can't be turned off, please try again later...
So, I unplugged it without furthure hesitating...

You are RIGHT, patio!
When I plugged this HDD to my notebook again, I got this warning:

and I found some of my data missing.
I have run chkdsk, but it can't help for the missing data.
Where has the data gone? What is showing after running chkdsk ? ?

Backup strategy would be a good thing to consider at this point.

It's possible you have only lost some data but without having that HDD in front of me it's impossible to tell.

If you want to try recovering data give PC File Inspector a go but your mileage may vary...

p.s. The lost data all goes to that HUGE mainframe in the sky...Quote

I typed "Chkdsk F", and then the DOS windows popped out.

I would love to show you the print screen, but I can't.
The DOS showed me hundreds of lines of corrupted data details, and then it started replacing
invalid security ID with the default ID...
Too many lines, I don't know how to tell.
Sorry for that, patio!

It's still in the data verifying stage, it just reached 6%.Cool,

Patio, it has just finished verifying the data, here is the result:

(I am sorry, i don't know how to copy the text from the DOS)

The missing data seems be back now, but the problem is that some of the files
are mis-placed. The folder A should originally have three files inside it, but now it has only one file left, and
I find the other two in Folder B.
It's weird! You are luckier than most that wind up in this situation in that most of your data is still there...
In the repair procedure chkdsk has been known to re-order some files/directories...not such a big deal if you know how to re-arrange your data.

Again i can't stress enough a good solid backup strategy if your data is important to you.

Congrats and stop by anytime...Quote

I can't highlight the text.
and when I right click, I see that the Copy option is disabled.

You should be able to highlight the text with your left mouse button then use your right mouse button to copy it.
Then use the right mouse button again to paste it in the dos window or Ctrl + V to paste it in a Windows type window like notepad or right here in chat.

Solve : Please Please Help Me!?

Answer»

Hi there,

I've NEVER used this forum before and I really need some help! My girlfriend recently bought a laptop a HP NC4000 second hand and it didn't have a CD/DVD drive. I had a spare external CD-RW drive lying around so i gave it to her. Unfourtunately the power supply to this has the same connector as an S-Video out connector and when she tried to set the computer up she accidentally connected the power source to the S-Video connector! The screen went funny for a while until i realised what she had done and so pulled the connector out. Now though the screen won't work at all!!!! Does this mean the screen is completely broken now? Can it be fixed and if so how much will this cost? (the Laptop was bought from ebay so no guarantee or anything like that i'm afraid )
Thanks for any help you can givewhen you turn the lap top on you said it powers on yes ? green flashing light or anything ?

Do the fans START, does the screen light up at all.... yeah you can hear the fan and feel the hard drive spinning in it so i think that the computer part is alright, there is a screen connector at the back so i guess i need to test whether or not that worksYep this makes it a little less likly to be a power suply issue...

Yes that would be a GOOD way to see if its the video card or the screen just get an old pc montior and PLUG it in the back and you will have an answer

Solve : Formatting Harddrive??

Answer»

After I format the hard drive, which do I install first?
The drivers on the cd that came with the motherboard, the PRINTER drivers and then Windows XP/SP2, AVG full edition. Also my harddrive has the jumper set at CB(cable select ?)(came that way already installed in computer) can I change that to Master before I install any drivers or WinXP? or do I change it to master after every thing is installed? I would like to add another harddrive(40GB) to my system as a secondary one.
My motherboard is a MSI [emailprotected]
Intel P4 /2.60GHz
80GB HD
512 MB DDR SDRAM
(2) DVD+/-RW
Media Reader 8 in 1
5 USB Ports (4 back-1 front)
56 K- ITU v.92 Ready Fax Modem
10/100 Mbps Ethernet
Ultra V Series 500 Watt ATX Power Supply
(2) Printers/ CX5200 Epson all in one and a Epson photo 870

Thanks in advance for any help.Do not have INTENET CONNECTED. If you have a cable, pull it out. Disconnect any USB devices.
1) Windows
2) Motherboard Drivers
3) AVG and some Spyware protection like Spybot
Connect the cable to the internet.
4) Use Windows Update to get all critical updates
5) Printer and all other peripherals. Follow instructions on printer.
6) Scan your system

You can change the JUMPERS on the cable at anytime (might as WELL do it first), BUT if you jumper the new hard drive you are adding as CS also, then the one on the far end of the cable is Master and the one on the center connector slave. Either way will work fine.Quote

do I change it to master after every thing is installed?

it must be the master to install windows on. either set the jumper on the HD to "Master" ,or set it to "cable select" and place it at the far end of the cable. hence, why they call it "cable select" (see pic below)

Thanks GX1_Man & Homer,
I appricate the help I have gotten from this forum, now and in the past. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks Again.your welcome. let us know how it goes.Cable Select and appropriate connections cause no problems for Windows to load. I've done it LOTS of times on a variety of machines. (That's most likely how it was originally done in his case, as it was wired this way and Windows was on it.) When you're completely finished download & install Ccleaner
(During install, uncheck the Yahoo Toolbar option)

Run the Cleaner and also Scan for Issues.

Then Defrag & Re-boot.

Do this on a regular basis and your computer will be happy.

Solve : I have problems in hearing sound from headphones?

Answer»

I have a 2.33 / dual core pc. Its a brand new pc, the problem is i have a seprate creative SOUND blaster card. I can hear sounds from my speakers which is connected to the creative sound card. But i cannot hear sounds from my headphones when i connect it to the attached sound card of the Pc. Maybe your headphones are busted. maybe they are high impedance type and need high volume level.

Quote

the attached sound card of the Pc.

Is that the Creative card?

try this:

IF you have a headphone jack in the front of your computer, plug your headphone into it. If you can hear sound from headphones, then headphones are ok. Then most likely it is some problem with your sound card and its headphone jack OR it could be some settings you might need to fix from your operating system (windows xp, vista, or WHATEVER other you are using)There is a headphone setting in Control Panel/Sounds and Multimedia...CHECK this also...If you are plugging it into your onboard sound card, you won't HEAD anything because the Card will disable this...plug the headphones into your Creative card and see if it comes through.

Solve : help!!?

Not really sure if this is where this belongs, but here goes..

When I try to restart my computer sometimes it will look as if the monitor is idle (when the light is orange and the screen is black) which forces me to shut it off by the tower and turn it back on it goes back on correctly and everything but then I don't have internet. Most of the time I can just restart and it won't go idle and I will have internet and everything will work fine, but last night it did this and I got tired of it so I just left it on and went to sleep. Next morning I tried to restart it and it worked fine, but today it is doing the same thing because I had to restart. I just reformated today HOPING it was just a virus or SOMETHING, but its still doing it and now I can't do anything with the computer because there's no music or anything. Someone else suggested I flash my motherboard or whatever, but I don't have a floppy drive and am not EXACTLY sure how to do that.

Any way to fix this or am I s.o.l? Any questions or you think it will help me in any way please post. I wish I could say more on the whole problem, but its just so frustrating.

Thanks,
ChuChiA BIOS flash is a last resort so don't take your friends advice...

Post alot more info on your system specs, OS etc. and someone will be along shortly...I don't really know anything about it, I know when I reformated I put Windows XP Home on it.

Telling us that you installed XP doesn't tell us a whole lot ......

Was it XP you had on the machine before ?
Did you have a fully functional anti-virus installed before ?
Do you have SP2 installed as well as all the other updates?
The fact that you were able to load XP suggests to me that your CD-rom is working ?
What player do you normally use for music ?
Have you checked to be sure the drivers for your sound card are installed ?
How do you normally connect to the net ....... dial-up , cable or DSL ?
How old is you machine ?
I don't think I would be flashing the bios until you have exhausted all other possibilities.

dl65
Yes, I had XP on it before.

No, I didn't have an anti-virus thing.

No, I didn't have all updates.

Yes, my CD-rom works.

To play music I use limewire or Windows MEDIA Player.

Yes, I have my sound drivers.

I connect to the internet with cable.

My machine is about year to a year an a half old.ChuChi.... Do you get any error messages when you try to play something using WMP11 ?
What happens when you put a music cd in the cd drive ...... will it play ?
When you reinstalled XP , did you D/L SP2 as well as all the critical and other updates from MS ?
If you click start/run ....then type cmd and press enter ....... a new box will appear ......... type dxdiag and press enter ......... a diagnostic window will open ........ now click on the sound tabs ( one at a time and run the test ) do this for all the sound tabs that are listed and note the results ....... and let us know.

dl65
No, I don't get any errors, music plays fine, no I didn't download anything because I don't have internet. I did what you said and it said my sound card does not support hardware buffering, but all tests were successful.Quote
I don't really know anything about it, I know when I reformated I put Windows XP Home on it.

Did you really format and do a clean install of XP or did you just re-install XP (dirty install)?
Many people confuse these things.

Solve : Making the switch??

Answer»

Having some trouble here. I took a hard drive (IBM) out of my old pc and put it in a different one (HP Pavilion 533w) as a slave drive. The bios recognizes it as a slave drive and in the right boot sequence, but in "My Computer" it doesn't show it. It has all of my important programs and data on it that I was hoping to have access to. What am I doing WRONG? What operating systems are on both drives?

Fat 32 can't access NTFS files. The operating system for the Samsung master drive is Windows XP Home edition and the one for the IBM slave drive is Windows XP Professional edition. Does that help? Do you think there is a conflict? What are the file structures? FAT32 / NTFS on each?Quote from: DeltaSlaya on August 21, 2007, 10:03:48 PM

What are the file structures? FAT32 / NTFS on each?

I agree with DeltaSlaya....WINDOW XP home is PROBABLY installed as
FAT 32.Sorry for my ignorance, but how would I find out? Especially how would I check the IBM drive since I can't access it?Just because Win XP is installed on a partition formatted FAT32, does that mean it can't read another drive or partition formatted NTFS? I'm a bit SKEPTICAL about this.I'd like to know that one too. The Windows XP Home that is on my Samsung hard drive is FAT 32. Maybe that is why it recognizes it in bios but not in "My Computer." When I go to My Computer to check the drives it shows the Samsung drive divided up into 23 disks. When I right click on the first disk and check the properties the other drives are all there, the IBM and I have a Seagate FreeAgent Pro. But I know these are NTFS, so maybe that is the problem. The question is, what to do about it. What can I do to get the drive to recognize the other ones so that I can access my files? I'm getting disparate .Right clik My Computer...select Manage then choose Disk Management...how does it show up there ? ?
Was the drive using disk compression before you swapped it in ? ?
Any new software installed recently ? ?

Solve : Laptop wont start?

Answer»

Hi i am having a weird problem, my computer just won't turn on

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1550 (i know thats probly the problem)

last NIGHT i was playing video games on my computer for probly too long when everything froze up, nothing would work to get it to turn off so i hit the BUTTON and turned it off
i went to turn it back on, it got to windows and froze again
i turned it off and back on again and this time it just went to the very first screen you see when i turn it on and frooze there,
since then it wont even get to that point

when i turn it on, the green power light comes on, and i can hear the computer start to work but nothing happens, the screen just stays black

i talked to dell tech support, and they had me do a few things, we found out its not thebattery or power source
and also while turning it on they had me push the FN key which made the caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights flash

they SAID that the problem is my motherboard and are going to have a local tech guy fix it,

im just wondering if that is the case or not, cause ive had a problem that they couldnt help me with in the past

THanks for the help im looking forward to a response
thanks
krazyfreak
It sounds like you got a tech who knew their stuff by thenm eleminating the obvious stuff first with the battery and power checks then moving through the other checks. They eliminated SOFTWARE faults and arrived at the most logical fault of mobo failure which needs someone to actually now open the computer and fix it.

Is this still covered under warranty? I'd be interested to know how they determined it's not a PSU or RAM issue over the phone...those GUYS must be GOOD ! !

I am starting college after 20+ years and need it desparately - one of my classes is on-line.Any help ASAP would be GREATLY appreciated. Thank You.
1. use the command net stop spooler
2. using Windows Explorer navigate to %systemroot%\system32\spool\printers
(usually c:\windows\sytem32\spool\printers) and delete any files with .shd
or .spl extensions
3. use the command net start spooler - REBOOT

Solve : possible video card problem or northbridge problem?

Answer»

Hello, about 3 months ago my computer started acting funny. It started when I left the system running overnight (which I used to do a lot) and I turned on the monitor the next morning and the screen was blank exept for the blinking cursor. I did the 3-finger salute, but I didn't end-task anything, just hit cancel. The screen went back to normal. I shut it off when I was finished. The next day, I booted it up, it ran fine, I let it run for a while, came back and the screen was blank - the teal-green WINDOWS color but with no desktop icons at all. It wouldn't shut down with the 3-finger salute, I had to shut it off manually. Ever since then, it does that still and especially when I'm playing one of my games the screen will suddenly turn into a bunch of vertical different colored stripes, or will turn into a blank screen of a different color and the system will freeze up, I have to shut it down manually. Sometimes this happens even when I have started the system up and get to the desktop screen or just go to internet explorer to get to my startup page. It happens 98% of the time when I'm trying to play one of my games. So...any ideas? THank you!

System:
Packard Bell (OLD!!!) Built in 1997 or 1998
CPU: Cyrix MII 300
64 MB RAM
Windows 98 SE

Video card is built/integrated into the motherboard by the way. SiS PCI True Co. IOR Graphics and Video Accelerator 1.M Byte Video Memory. Shared memory BIOS version 1.10 06-24-98 Support VESA BIOS Extension version 2.0 (I got that info on the video card from doing the "DEBUG" thing in the MS-DOS prompt, hope that helps...thanks!)
(quote) playing one of my games the screen will suddenly turn into a bunch of vertical different colored stripes, or will turn into a blank screen of a different color and the system will freeze up (/quote)

same thing happed to me...my graphics card was overheating...have you tried dusting out the macheine?I haven't tried that yet. It's been about 6 or 7 months since I did that, maybe that will do it. So it does sound like the video card then. I'll give it a try. Thanks.then try new drivers if dust doesnt fix (all not just graphics card jsut incase)Sounds like a failing video adapter (at best) and a failing motherboard (at worst). Do you have an old PCI video card you could slide in there to test with? What about taking off the side of the case and after dusting it out, BLOW a fan in there to see if it helps. Check the CPU fan to see if its turning as well.

With that processor and motherboard and it's age you have probably GOTTEN a full term of service from it. heh heh, you're probably right, it's ancient! I don't have another video card around, the one on the motherboard is built-in. If I have to replace the video card, I don't even know if I'll find one that is compatible with this old thing. Any suggestions for finding a video card for this old system?Any PCI vid card should work fine in that system...course we don't yet know which MBoard you have...Any PCI 4 or 8 meg card would do just fine. It doesn't NEED to be anything special except not so bizarre that you can't get drivers for it. An ATI or Matrox would be ideal and eBay is a great place to go for this.

Solve : new cpu install system32\hal.dll error now?

Answer»

I recently INSTALLED a new p4 3.2 northwood cpu into my gigabyte 8ipe1000pro mothorboard. Upon booting up I get the system32 \HAL.dll error.

I have checked the cpu temp (its at around 60c) If I put the previous cpu in (p4 2.6) the machine starts up no problem and enters windows without any error.

I did an os reinstall, but it would either hang up on reinstall or give me the same message.
Once I did get into windows but the computer shut off after about an hour and cam back on with the same message system32\hal.dll

Any ideas??
The Hal other than just a Hardware Abstraction Layer are also used as a Piracy Protector built into MS OS ... If your OS thinks that you are dropping the hard drive into a clone ( problem in the days of pre XP ) MS Cracked down on this Piracy Problem of building a drive in original system and move drive to clone for free illegal OS and software.

Usually you are prompted to reactivate your OS Key with MS server or with MS India SUPPORT. At least that was the case with my Win 2003 Server Enterprise Edition after upgrading CPU's. But it looks like you swapped Motherboard and CPU, so many changes to break the HAL

And here regarding Hals:

**** I'd downgrade, backup all your important data, and perform a clean install of XP from MS OEM Installation set. This should go smooth. You will probably not be able to use the original MFR Restore XP install to get this working...Drastic Hardware Changes break the Restore Set...

Solve : my processor is overheating?

Answer»

I have newly installed

intel duo core processor 3 GHZ with intel 945 GCNL motherboard. I assemble every thing. But when I turn the cpu on. It automatically turns off after about 5 seconds.

When I reboot, I hear a siren beeping two TIMES and then the cpu turns off.

I have only one heatsink and fan( that comes with the processor) and is working properly.

Do ANYONE help me please. I don't know what to do.

I shall be very very thankful.Disassemble everything so that the only things connected to the motherboard are the:
cpu / cpu fan / RAM / power SUPPLY. Reseat the cpu/RAM &b power supply connections. Boot and see what happens.

If it still does the same thing, remove the motherboard from the case / reconnect as above and TRY again.

If that still doesn't work you have a BAD cpu/RAM/power supply/motherboard.

Alan <>< Do you follow correct procedure in applying thermal paste to the processor before mounting the heatsink on it?how can i apply thermal paste, do i have to buy it separately because paste is not given with the processor.

and processor book also haven't mention anything about it
Did you buy the heatsink and fan separately? Did the heatsink have a thermal pad on it? Did installation instructions come with the heatsink?

See Installing a CPU and Heatsink

yes sir,

the processor came in a sealed packet with heat sink and fan, heat sink and fan are of new round shape.

There is only a intel book which have not mention of thermal paste. do it come separately.

A slight paste in there on the top of the processor and lower part of the heat sink. but it is not enough i think only slight paste. The language translation is a bit difficult to understand and I'm not quite sure exactly what you've done during the process of assembling your computer.

So, I think you should carefully read How To Correctly Apply Thermal Grease, remove your heatsink, clean the old thermal compound off of it, and apply new thermal paste/grease as explained in the article.

Solve : Cant get sound out of speakers when surfing the web?

Answer»

Whenever I am on the Interent, I CANT get sound. For example I cant get audio on youtube. But its not just youtube, its everywhere that i cant hear sound. I can hear sound if im playing a game that i installed and i can hear itunes and WMA. how do i fix this??More information please.
What version of windows is this?
When did the problem start?
etc...Its Windows XP. The problem STARTED after I got the computer from a friend. The computer ISNT EVEN a year old a believe.Alright I have more accurate specs for my comp now. Its a HP Pavillion A200N. It has a 2.4Ghz Intel Celeron Processor. Now the sound problem has been happening ever SINCE I got the thing. Did your "friend" also give you the recovery CD's along with the computer? Most likely that's why he/she gave it to you

If not there may be a partition that has the installation software on it. Usually on a brand name pc you can, @ the boot process, have the option to boot to that partition and restore the computer back to its original condition.

Have you checked Device Manager for problems / what browser are you using / try Firefox:

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Alan <><
downloaded firefox but no luck with that. checked the device manager and I see nothing alarming there. i wasnt given any cd's with the computer though. I will see about getting those from him if I can contact him. But tell me more about this "partition" (dumb it down plz lol)

Solve : Mouse issues - possibly compatibility with XP pro SP2 YES/NO??

Answer»

Hey, I was just wondering. Well basically Installed WIN98se when I first got my new hard drive and then I formatted my new hard drive to install Xp pro and now ive just upgraded to Xp pro SP2 And my mouse is playing up abit... It does a tiny LITTLE shiver that u can only just notice and then it moves slowly and smoothly across the screen or up the screen in most cases. I didnt have this problem with 98se and I bought the mouse new not long ago but its an old make of mouse that I got. I did notice an occasional little bit of a shiver with the original Xp pro but now its moving across the screen after the SP2 installation.
My mouse is a A4 tech OK-250. Its came with no drivers and its just a standard 2 button, no wheel, ball movement (not optical) mouse.
Ive just run a check on Spybot search and destroy it came up with a few entries and Iam now fixing the problems like removing casale media and cpx interactive and what not.... but do I replace my mouse with a newer one suited to XP? Would that fix the problem for good? Just a simple yes or no... If someone answers other than what u think please share becuase any HELP would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for ur time Just finished spybot s&d. Problem is still there Just thought id let u guys know... Post way more info on that machine and it's specs...a Win98 machine going to XP is never a pretty outcome most TIMES.Ok, Well all the information I could find is that it has

AMD duron Processor
1.00GHz
448MB of RAM
WD 160Gig Hard drive
Nvidia GeForce2 MX/MX 400 Graphics

Cheers
Might be a driver issue or a hardware issue. Do you have another mouse you can try/borrow?

Alan <>< I finally borrowed a mouse. The other mouse seems to work fine atm.... no shivering or moving atm and by now it would normally start. So thats a good thing I guess. I may seem abit of a dumb dumb at these THINGS but see I really dont trust the computer that ive got because it is getting on in age and Im not quite sure about all the performance and reliability of all hardware and so forth. My boss built it for me back in 2001 so yeah I dont really know all that much about it. And it has let me down a few times in the past but im pretty sure thats maybe to do with that hard drive that ive now replaced....

Anywho back to the mouse, I have heard that mice run a certain amount of kilometers and then kinda run out of functionality. I dont really understand it because Ive had to replace a few mice before but all were bought new and dont last all that long. Im not really prepared to blow $50-$100 bucks on a mouse just yet. But I dont buy second hand and I normally get ones that arnt too cheap and nasty like a novelty... But is the running out of Km's thing common?

The mouse isnt going too bad at all now Which is awesome. I should have thought of trying another mouse earlier. Sorry Its just my distrust in my comp that kinda makes me look for something wrong inside the case. I just thought it was strange that all of a sudden after XP Pro SP2 was installed it really started to play up.... coincidence? lol
Thank u

Solve : IDE CDROM Drive Slave Problems?

Answer»

All of a sudden my computer started accessing my HD and wouldn't quit. I quickly noticed that my CDROM drives were no longer recognized by Windows. Not to long after that everything froze and every time I tried to reboot it-it would immediately start accessing the HD like crazy and wouldn't get past the initial BIOS screen.

My initial suspicion was that it was my HD, but after a lot of trial and error I've come to suspect it's something to do with my CDROM drives. I say this because after I unplugged them the system boots and runs perfectly. So after some more trial and error I discovered that both CDROM drives (and my system) work so long as there's only one of them connected. As soon as I connect either of them as a slave the problem returns. It doesn't seem to MATTER which drive is the slave/master either.

I've checked my IDE cables and they all look fine and are firmly connected. Both drives are seemingly powering on, as I can usually (except when the system freezes) eject the disk tray. And I've only checked and double checked the jumpers a few hundred times.

So I'm at a loss as to what the problem could be. I could see it if one of the drives was defective, but why would they both still work as a master?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.
~James

System:
OS: Windows 98 SE
MB: ECS P6VXA
RAM: 256MB
CPU: 1Ghz Pentium III
HD: 250GB Seagate Barracuda ST3250623A-RK - Primary IDE controller
CDROM: Mitsumi FX4831T!A - Secondary IDE controller
CDWriter: HP CD-Writer 9500 - Secondary IDE controller
When you say both work when connected individually can you read discs and copy files from them on both and burn with the CD-RW?Yes. Individually both drives read discs, copy files, play audio CDs, and the burner writes all of the above beautifully.

I would start by replacing the IDE cable...make sure it is an 80 pin connector,
Next i would go to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager and select the IDE channel that is acting up...right clik it and select remove.
You still haven't mentioned how your drives are set up/ cabled...
Windows will automatically re-install it on re-BOOT...although it may ask for your MBoard driver disk...

Try these steps and post back with the results.Okay, I removed the IDE controller from Windows, then replaced the old IDE cable that came with the system with a new one. I successfully booted with both drives connected. For the moment it would seem as if it's working.

I'm still a little concerned as when I first turn the computer on the HD accesses for a few seconds. Normally it only comes on for a split second. I hope that's nothing to be concerned about, but some part of me is afraid it might be.

Quote

You still haven't mentioned how your drives are set up/ cabled...

Sorry, I didn't think it was important. Usually I plug the master into the end of the cable, and the slave in the middle. Although I did try swapping that arrangement. Which didn't seem to matter either way. My old IDE cable (for the CDROM drives) was a 40 wire cable that came with the system when I bought it. The new one I just installed is an 80 wire cable. The HD cable is a newer 80 wire cable that came with the HD when I bought it.
There are many things that will access the HDD and cause the ACTIVITY light to go on...anti-virus; programs loading or running in the background etc.

To check the overall health of the HDD DLoad and run the diagnostics from the drive manuf. site. This will tell you if that drive can be trusted with data.

You may also want to run disk cleanup and DEFRAG if it hasn't been done in awhile.

You can also DLoad and install Startup CPL from Mike Lin. This will tell you everything that is loading at startup on your machine...You might, as a precaution, back up any data you want to keep just in case the hard drive does fail. Better SAFE than sorry

Alan <>< Oh, no. I mean literally when I first turn my computer on, this is happening long before Window's is even given the chance to boot. When I press the power button the HDD access light lights up for a few seconds while my BIOS performs it's initial start up sequence. Which is abnormal behavior, as it normally only comes on for a split second. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid?

Anyways, I'm not really worried about the hard drive itself, I run diagnostics with Seatools and defrag it every once in a while, and so far everything looks good. But even if it were to go I always keep a backup of all my important data.

Solve : What Hardware do u think should buy for my new computer? Have ur say...?

Answer»

Hey, Im am planning to build a new computer fairly soon as soon i get the cash flow up. I know that most of u probably think Im computer illiterate because of my other posts hahaha. But Im gonna give it a go because thats how u learn and computers really do it for me, I love them and I dont want to waste money on someone else building it for me and me not learning anything about the workings of my system. I dont know much about decent gpu's is or cpu's or anything so I really do need some help. Because this is my first attempt from scratch.

Ok so far im gonna be running the same OS which is XP Pro SP2 coz Im not really a Vista fan.

Im gonna be getting an ATX Omni 4720 PC Case... The link is here
http://www.i-love-pc.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductNO=808

Basically speaking its got stacks of ROOM EG/ Five 3.5 HD spaces and Four 5.25 spaces and good vent.

What I want to do is buy from this store because Its just down the road and genuinely cheap ( I got my new HD from there ).
HERES the link http://www.i-love-pc.com
Its the same site as the case link btw.

Ok so what I need to figure out apart from the Case and HARD Drive is the rest and this is where u come in.
What I want from my computer is one thing but price is another. Im not rich atm and would like to buy everything from that store if so... If u have an idea of what hardware I would need, find it on the site and then could u please tell me? If u cant find it there can u please just give me the make and model and any other info that might help and I could probably order it in from the store. I dont want anything too flash, I just want the right hardware to do the job right and well enough so I dont have troubles for a while.

What I would like from my comp - I would like to hook up 5.1 surround sound.
At least 6 USB Ports. An option might be to get 4 and then a small hub?
I would like to view movies with ease...that means no jumpy crap happening in full screen mode and I will be happy.... A nice CARD to probably go with an LG L1917SSN 19 inch LCD Monitor http://www.i-love-pc.com/ProductDetail.asp?ProductNO=659 Hoping to stick with Nvidia tho if that helps...
As far as RAM goes I would like to upgrade to DDR2 but have no idea how to do that. And would like at least a gig. And also my HD is IDE so I think I should maybe go SATA. Would that be a good idea for the future? Coz I can always palm off my IDE Hard drive to dad or my sister, It only cost me $60 bucks New for 160GB anyway lol.
Baically I want to listen to top quality music. I also wouldnt mind recording voice tags and stuff through the mic on a regular basis to mix musically. Is it possible to get more than ONE Mic port? Coz I would really love to record with more than one mic at a time... For example one for guitar and the other for voice. If u cant its all good im just exploring options.
CPU? - Not sure on this one. Maybe if someone could take a stab from what I want from my comp?
Motherboard? Same deal there... I have no idea.
Network needs to support ethernet/Lan.... Broadband.
DVD Burner, DVD Player, Cd Burner, and obviously CD Player. Floppy im not too fussed about, Not quite sure if the case will allow it. I do need a floppy drive but I think I have an external one floating around somewhere. So that not a big deal to worry about.

I also will be using a scanner and WEBCAM and a dvd camcorder thats a mass usb storage device pretty much on a regular basis consisting of amature vid editing and such, Dont know if that has to do with much but im just thinking of the power and usage needed to run all these things, Probably not all at once tho lol.

So thats all I can think of atm. If anyone is up for the mission and has some spare time please feel free to help me. Thanks heaps

Solve : PC 2700 ram vs PC 3200?

Answer»

My computer accepts only DDR ram. If I EVER get more ram to increase the memory ...

Would you recommend getting PC 2700 or PC 3200 ram?

I now have 2*256mb PC3200, and 1 256mb of PC2700 and I know right now, my computer runs at the PC2700 speed

Like let's say, 4*256mb rams at PC2700 vs 4*256mb rams at PC3200? Would the speed increase at the PC3200 be significant enough as compared to the PC2700, or would that not matter too much and I could get either type and that would be ok??
You won't notice the speed difference in my opinion...what determines it also is what the MBoard runs it at.just out of curiousity, would 1.5 ram be enough to run windows vista home premium comfortably?

I know vista premium REQUIRES at LEAST 1gb memory so....Sure...sure 1 gb is the minimum but people have recommended that you have at least 2 gb so that windows vista home premium will run smoothly without any lagging whatsoever.

Is 1.5 gb of ram that way i mean... does vista premium run smoothly at 1.5 gb with aero transparency turned on completely and whatnot? Or would my computer still feel laggy / sluggish?Although RAM is certainly a factor the other components in the machine matter as well...

For example, when I go to ESPN.com a video plays on the homepage but I hear no sound. you may need to update your soundcard...I had been having problems with sound for awhile and about a week ago i updated my driver. Newer isn't always better.
What soundcard is this by the way ? ?
I'm not sure.
How can I fix the soundcard to make it play sound on the internet? With all the vague responses you have given to the questions posted this could go on for weeks...
DLoad and install Everest Home and run a report...save it to a text file.

Solve : Paswword protected BIO's?

Answer»

This is my current situation, thanks for reading by the way. I have had three PC's donated to me from a library, these are very old systems. I removed the password protect via the cmos battery, and then reinstalled the OSto get rid of the password protect on the OS, this PC is now operational. I have clone to that system, these two were exactly the same, I did the cmos trick on the second one, now all I get is the system hands at the post. I try to run setup at (f1) and the system says it is entering setup, but the bios will not load, and the post will not continue. Also I tried to let the system boot up, but it too hangs at the final post screen, no beeps, no screem errors. Why did this work on one unit and not the other when both are identical? Ay Ideas would help greatly. I also have one more that will need to have the same thing done except it is a Dell and is DEAD completely, have to get it started first. Any Dell experts out there, have had a rash of Dells that will not power up, acts like dead power supplies but the power supplies test out good, CHECK the rm MODULES all are seated fine, what is going on with these Dell machines?I speak Dell. What are the model and processors? Better yet doyou have the service tags on the machines? It should be on the side of the case, a 5-7 digit combo of numbers and letters.

What make is the one other machine that won't boot up correctly? By requiring you to press F1, I am ASSUMING it is an IBM. What is the machine code for it - a seven digit like xxxx-xxx?I will get this for you and repost, it will take a couple of days so please stand by, thanks for your reply.

Solve : Toshiba laptop power problem?

Answer»

Hello! I hope someone can help me.

I bought a laptop (Toshiba) in Canada, and have recent moved to Taiwan for work. My laptop is second hand, and I'm not sure who had it before. I bought it from a computer technician who got it from a third party.
Anyway, the computer refuses to charge its battery. I plug it in, and nothing. I can't get it to turn on. I know TI's not a WEIRD virus or anything. It's just that the computer won't acknoweledge that there's a power supply hooked to it.
I've taken it to 3 different computer stores here in Taiwan, and they all tell me that they can't help me becuase the PART that needs to be replaced must be bought in Canada. (The part is the thing that the power supply hooks into when I plug it into the computer. Sorry I don't know the technical name)
The only problem is that the serial number on teh computer is rubbed off, and that seems to be an important thing in getting the right part for my computer.
Is there ANYTHING that can be done for my laptop? I'm pretty desperate. I have limited other ways to contact my family at home OUTSIDE of programs like Skype, which are on my computer.
If anyone can help, I'd greatly appreciaet it. My email address is [emailprotected] ...That's my preferred method of responce.
Thanks so much!

E Mail address removed to prevent Spam...We need the model number of your laptop. From that details of your laptop can be found on the Internet, without it we're flying blind.

I had the same problem too after a few charge its because of the Toshiba Laptop batteries died like if it was Dell which will prevent charge to the computer even when the battery is out, theres not much you can do about it if the CIRCUIT is screwed up and the batteries dont work... sorry to hear about that.

Solve : Monitor Problem?

Answer»

Monitor: Viewsonic VX924 LCD

Monitor started blinking off and on every few moments, and when it blinked back on it said ANALOG in the bottom corner as if the SENSOR was just picking up again or something.

Also, the screen went blank white for awhile, and I could see the desktop if I looked from above, but not straight on.

This just started happening last night.

Do I need to replace the monitor?how old is the monitor ?
Do you have another monitor you could swap in just to be sure your vid card isnt going ?

dl65 Yeah I tried my roommate's monitor briefly and it seemed fine. I'm not sure what would have caused this to happen to my monitor it's only about 6 months old. I'm going to call thew company xpcgear.com where I got it, on monday and hope for the best.Nvidiot..... ok , then that pretty MUCH rules out the vid card as being suspect .
Did any software come with that monitor ?
Hopefully , the monitor will still be under warantee.

dl65 Here's what one person said:

Sounds like the backlight inverter BOARD.

It's a very common problem.

LCD's use four small Cold Compact Fluorescent bulbs to back light the display. (thats what gives the LCD it's brightness allowing you to see it)

The inverter board runs these lights and when they go bad they will typically SHOW symptoms like you have or the monitor power light comes on and you have either no display or a very dim display.

If you ever have one that has no display but the power light is on you can check by shining a flashlight directly into the LCD from the front (right into the screen) if you can see an image then it's either the inverter board (most likely) or the CCFL bulbs have gone bad.

The inverter board and CCFL's are replaceable.Standard Viewsonic LCD monitors have a 3 year warranty IF it came from a legitimate dealer.

Does anybody have any good Ebooks for hardware or websites where I can read about hardware? Would it be a good idea to try and build a cheap computer to learn about it?

Depends on your definition of "cheap".
If you buy the least expensive possible, of every COMPONENT, you increase your chances of giving yourself heartburn. Just like most things, if you get the cheapest, you are risking early failure, poor construction, and/or just outright not working right out of the box. This is not good, and especially so when just starting out.

At the opposite extreme, I don't feel it is necessary to buy "cadillac" parts either. At this point, you might be paying a premium just for the name.

Like anything, good value is the thing to aim for. Forums like this can be excellent places to garner opinions on different components. Of COURSE, until you get familiar with the terms and jargon, it might look like a language of its own - but that can be part of the fun too.

As your read books and online articles, etc., when you come across terms that unfamiliar to you, or you are unsure of, don't forget this website!
There is much more to Computer HOPE than just these forums.
There are some excellent 'help' articles, FAQs, etc. Well written and easy to understand.

That said, you might like to check out:

Solve : My new PC build?

I'm building myself a new PC. It'll be used for heavy multimedia and heavy gamingg. (not extreme gaming though). Here are the specs:

ECS RD480-A939 motherboard
3D fuzion Geforce 7600GS 256MB GDDR2
Rosewill 480-watt PSU
A-data 1GB DDR400 dualchannel RAM
AMD Athlon 64 3200
total: $452.31
What do you think?define heavy gaming but not extreamPlaying the latest games, but not the latest and greatest hardware. Decent gaming machine.Your not going to be able to do much current gaming with that.. but if ur budget is 500$, i guess thats the best u can do. Remmember to always spend as much as u can on the graphics card.I always thought that the graphics card and CPU were "important" because of hype: intel and ATI. I could play all my games without any bottleneck on the GPUs end with my current hardware (before my RAM WENT berzerk). I thought that having such an advanced graphics card would MAKE my PC able to play all the latest and greatest games. Until a few years ago, a mach64 was plenty options for me.Quote

Even a 500$ low-end PC would be a lot better than ur current PIII PC, but if ur happy with that and are able to play the games that u like on that PC, then why upgrade?
If u WANT to upgrade, take my graphics card advice and buy whatever CPU u want. You WILL be able to play current games on even a 7600 GS, but not at high settings. If the PC is "low-end" u will only be able to play current games on low-end graphics settings.

If u have a 32MB Riva, it dosent matter what graphics card u buy, because ull see a huge difference in graphics, such as uve never thought possible.No. I have 2x20GB EIDEs. 40GB total.Count on one drive for the operating system, and the other for 1 or 2 games and an application or two. That's about all you will have room for. As they are 20 gig drives, they are PROBABLY older and slower than what would be appropriate for a powerful new system. I would recommend a newer, faster and bigger hard drive.I can't afford both the 7600GS and the 160GB hard drive. I'll add on the hard drive later.

Solve : CPU running anywhere near stated chip speed?

Answer»

First time on the site, what a great resource!

I have an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ CPU runing in a MSI KN72 Delta2 (MS-6570E v!.X) PLATINUM series motherboard which is supposedly 'designed for' these processors.

My BIOS splash screen identifies the chip as 3000+ but if I go into BIOS Setup it shows as running at 2140MHz. I am running Windows XP Home Edition 2002 with SP2 and 1Gb of RAM and in System Properties it also reports the CPU running at 2.12GHz.

Is this correct? I have tried fiddling with FSB speeds and this result is achieved with 202MHz FSB which is the maximum I can go to. I have tried the so called safe 'Dynamic Overclocking' facility in Bios but the system becomes unstable.

The computer runs fine, but it is certainly no better than my other 2GHz Athlon running the same software with 512Gb of RAM. My Laptop is a 2.6GHz and is reported as running at 2.5GHz in XP.

I cannot believe that this is right! Interestingly my CPU temperature is showing as around 60 degrees C, which seems rather cool from what I can gather from other posts on the site, so maybe it's not operating at full stretch?

Any advice, help or comments gratefully received.Well for me personally I'd be s**t scared if my CPU was operating at 60C, but I don't know what Athlons run at. AMDs XXXX+ number is NOT the clock speed and it is NOT what it will be reported as in Windows XP.

Quote

After 2000, Intel's competitor, AMD, started using model numbers instead of clock rates to market its CPUs because of the lower CPU clocks when compared to Intel. Continuing this trend it attempted to dispell the "Megahertz myth" which it CLAIMED did not tell the whole story of the power of its CPUs. In 2004, Intel announced it would do the same, probably because of consumer confusion over its Pentium M mobile CPU, which reportedly ran at about half the clock rate of the roughly equivalent Pentium 4 CPU. As of 2007, performance improvements have continued to come through innovations in pipelining, instruction sets, and the development of multi-core processors, rather than clock speed increases (which have been constrained by CPU power dissipation issues). However, the transistor count has continued to increase as predicted by Moore's Law.
Where are the temps being reported ? ?140F/60C isn't really that hot, according to this site that particular processor has a MAX safe operating temp of 185F/85C.

Also of note, the site says that 2.16GHz is the proper clock speed.

Seems like you're using some odd logic here. You seem to think the temp should be higher if it was "operating at full stretch". That's just silly, and I would not call 60 degrees C "rather cool". The highest temp I've ever seen with my AMD Athlon XP 2200+ is 47C. Right now, it's at 43C and has been running for over 2 hours.

Now, of course, the CPU temp will vary depending on how you're tasking your computer. You've said nothing about how you're using your computer when it's running at 60C. Thank you gentlemen, most enlightening.

For DeltaSlaya - Your quote was just what I have been looking for as I was very confused about the new processor ratings. I am ashamed that I assumed the processor was a 3GHz but as the nerd in the shop told me that was it's speed, I believed him. I shouldn't have as he (along with all other shop staff I have asked) could not explain to me the new ratings. I shall be paying him a visit shortly and VENT my displeasure. My motherboard manual says a 3200+ is the fastest I can use so I shall be bargaining hard. I must go and check what the 3200+'s actual speed is elsewhere in the site - thank you James359.

As for the temperauture guys, I have a little utility program that was reporting 60 degrees but after seeing your comments I did the equivalent of an engine 'plug chop' on my PC i.e revved it up during one of Doom 3's busy scenes (where things slow down because it has so much to deal with, I presume) and hit the reset button. Going straight into Setup on the re-boot the temperature was flicking steadily between 47 and 50, which seems to make sense from what you have said.

So, you're getting inconsistent temp readings from different sources, right? The utliity program you mentioned gives a different reading than the BIOS screen, right?

What is that utliity program? You might download SpeedFan and try it. I find that it gives me the same readings that I see in the BIOS, but this MAY vary, I suppose, depending on the make and model of your motherboard. Quote from: wrightik on August 22, 2007, 02:04:01 PM

Well the XXXX+ number is, in a way the 'clock speed' for AMD processors, but is not based on the same measurements that Intel uses. AMD processors commonly run at lower clock speeds but can achieve the same or higher general performance. Read the Wikipedia link I've posted.

As for your temperature checking method, that will not give you a reliable temperature, a CPUs temp can drop rapidly, it could have dropped 30C as soon as Doom stopped.

Solve : graphics card problem??

Answer»

Recently got a video card for my computer and I'm having some PROBLEMS.
System:
HP Pavilion a 735w
Athlon 3000+ 2.1Ghz
1 gig ram
Upgraded the power supply to a 350W unit when I put in the video card

ATI Radeon 9700 Pro video card

The Problem: Occasionally (sometimes with only Internet Explorer OPEN) the screen will develop four or five "stripes" the run from the top to the bottom of the display. These stripes are very multicolored, and in effect blur the rest of the display that is still visible beneath them; in other words, on the desktop if a 'stripe' COVERS an icon, I can still see the icon but it is blurred by the 'stripe'.

Any idea what's going on?
thanks,
Russplug a different monitor into your graphics card. if the lines are still visible on the different monitor, the video card is the problem. if the lines are no longer visible on the different monitor, your monitor is the problem.
Or put back in your old card to see if the new card is at fault.Ok, I grabbed a monitor from my office and tried it out....four lines just like my monitor. I'll remove the radeon card this evening and revert back to the onboard graphics, but then what?
RussA bad card would need to be replaced. Be sure it is seated correctly.
Was it working fine or the video just developed problems AFTER you changed the card?Try a lower REFRESH rate. The monitor might not adequately support the refresh rate the card is set to.Ok,
I've taken the Radeon card out and changed back to the ondoard graphics...and I can see again.
It had gotten so bad that I couldn't see very much of the screen at all.
Should I try to re-install the card to see if it happens again? Should I call the shop where I bought the card to try and exchange it?
Thanks,
Russ

PS I changed the refresh rate with no difference, and video developed problems about a week after changing from onboard graphics to the Radeon card ( I installed the card specifically to play GT Legends).Absolutely...return it for a new one.
Can you still return the PSU and upgrade to at least a 450 ...350 is on the borderline for a newer machine with a beefed up VID card.

Solve : Installing SATA HDD as Master on an IDE Motherboard through PCI Adapter?

Answer»

So, I have an SATA HDD that I found in my DAD's busted computer. The HDD still works fine as we hooked it up to another computer through a IDE and SATA to USB cable. I want to make the new SATA HDD my master on my main computer, but the computer uses IDE HDDs (Which have crashed). I purchased an SATA PCI Host Card and INSTALLED it into the pc. However, when I hooked everything up and booted it, I RECEIVE an error stating: NTLDR is missing Press Crtl+Alt+Del to restart.

My pc is an older Sony Vaio PCV-RX650 with stock motherboard.
The SATA HDD is a Maxtor 6L100M0 - 100 GB HDD

When I use my recovery discs to try and install WINDOWS on the computer, I always get an error message saying:

Cannot find hard drive
Confirm if hard drive is correctly connected.

I've plugged in the HDD to the PCI card and the PCI card to the slot. There is power to the HDD.

The start up screen looks like this:

Solve : System fan speed reading zero since since day 1?

Answer»

I just recently BUILT my computer about a month ago. All 5 fans are running (6 with cpu). My bios and tuner app both say my system fan is running at 0 rpm. What exactly is going on here? Should it be a concern?Not knowing what kind of fan it is, and what kind of motherboard you've GOT complicates matters. So it'd help to know;

Where is your fan getting it's power? The power supply, or your motherboard?
What kind of fan is it, a standard fan or a PWM fan?
Are all the fan's wires connected to its power source?

EDIT:
Basically what your looking for is to see if the Yellow or Green (I think) wire is connected to your motherboard. That's the wire that reports your fan's speed to the motherboard.

If that wire isn't connected and the fan is running, personally I wouldn't say it's a BIG deal. Just means you don't know how fast it's running.endezeichen,Had (actually still have)this very same issue with a Compaq Presario. However it is clear by visual observation that the fan is actually operating. Also the temps are being maintaned well within specs.Contacted HP and they said not to WORRY about it as their installation did not include an ability of the system to detect a fan speed. So it may well be that is the case with the way yours is also setup even though you built it yourself. If it causes other issues you can tell the BIOS to IGNORE the warning. truenorthI have a Striker Extreme motherboard, which supports something like 9 fans, with speed monitoring. Though unfortunately my case's fans came with PSU connections, not the four pin motherboard ones. This means those speeds don't show up, it's not uncommon.

Solve : Problem at start up?

Answer»

If anyone can help me with this I would appreciate it. I have a self built computer with a Seagate hard drive and an MSI mother board. It is just about 3 years old and has been working fine till today. I shut it down to install a wireless card. I didn't do any work to it yet and tried to start it back up again and it wouldn't start up completely. When you turn it on, the power light COMES on and stays on, the keyboard light comes on just briefly ( a lot shorter then usual), the hard drive runs contuously and both fans run continuously however, on the monitor I receive a "no input signal" and the light on the laser mouse doesn't come on either nor do the keyboard lights EVER come back on. I've tried to clean it out, disconnect the power supply and reinstall, checked all the wiring on the motherboard and inspected it for any burnouts and I cannot find anything. Has anyone had this problem before or have any ideas what is wrong? I would greatly appreciate anyones assistance. What's the name, wattage and age of the power supply? Does it come on at all? Do the fans spin? The power supply is a Mirage, 350W and it is only about 1 1/2 - 2 years old. The fans run just fine and it sounds like the hard drive is running the same as well.Take out the wireless card & reboot...what happens?

Alan <>< The wireless card was never installed. All I did was shut down the machine, I never put the card in because I hadn't installed the software yet, so I had to turn it back on and that is when I had the problem.Do you happen to have another machine you can swap that PSU into to see if it is the culprit ? ?

patio. 8-)Only USB devices require you to install the software before connecting the device.

Have you touched anything whilst the PC CASING was open?I never touched anything, plus I hadn't even opened the case yet. What are you thinking could have caused it. I have been thinking that it is the mother board. Its just kind of expensive to replace just to test.I don't have another machine to test the PSU, but I was thinking that since the fan and the hard drive are still running, the PSU might not be the problem. Could it still run the fan and hard drive, and not allow the computer to finish start up.The computer SIMPLY wouldn't start up anymore?

Inspect the motherboard to see if any of those round towers little towers of which I do not know the bloody name e are leaking a yellow fluid.

Also make certain all HARDWARE and cables are firmly seated.capacitors raptor. Finally.

Solve : Not Charging.....?

Answer»

I have a DELL laptop about 3 YEARS old. I plug the charger in, the CHARGING light flicks on once quickly then nothing happens. The computer won't turn on as the battery is DEAD, but it also won't charge. Any ideas? That battery has probably outlived it's lifespan.
Do you know anyone with a similar machine ? ?
If so borrow there battery to DETERMINE if it is the battery or the charging system at fault. Not having used laptops much, I have to ask, does a dead battery mean the computer will not run? In other words, the power does not get ROUTED directly from the power cord to the system if the battery dies? Is this true with all laptops? I can say that isn't true for all laptops. My laptop runs fine without a battery inserted (the battery is dead and I always use it near a socket anyway...) and I have personal experience with at least a couple of brands that doesn't care if a battery is present or not.As some of you may know, I was given an old computer (Dell Inspiron 4000) and the battery is like stuck to the computer with screws. If my predictions are right. The battery is about the size of an A5 piece of paper.

Back to the problem at hand, my dad's laptop runs fine without the battery so either something is wrong with the charger or something is wrong with the connection inside the laptop.

Seconded
However, if you really can't/don't want to, an AMD SEMPRON 3200+ or above will GIVE you about the same/better performance than the Intel Celeron D
An AMD Athlon 64/X2 will give you even better performance
However, as Track said, an E6300 will beat all of these but the top-end ones for cheaperA Celeron D does not have equivalent with a current AMD. The AMD's are all better than that.A sempron 64 3200+ will be (from what i hear) about twice the speed of a celeron D 3.2GHz.If u cannot afford a 175$ CPU, TRY going for an Athlon 64 or Pentium 4, not a Sempron or Celeron. What MBoard have you DECIDED on ? ?

Solve : Server issue?

Answer»

I recently got a Gateway(ick) 7210 server, which had 1 PIII CPU which says: 600E/256/100/1.65V S1 on the top, so I got two faster CPUs off of ebay, which says: 933/256/133/1.7V S1. I'm wondering if the two new CPUs will work. I got them both running in the server, but one of the new CPUs dosen't have a heatsink on it, and I don't want to burn it up. I'm slightly sleep deprived right now, so just let me know what other information you need.

Thanks in advance,

Vipersorry can't help you out, but i'm curiuos, is this server for web HOSTING or what? sounds coolYeah, if I can ever get it running, it will be used for web hosting. You haven't had any problems yet with the CPU overheating?

Is it even working, then?I got a heatsink on the other 933mhz processor, installed them both, but I cant get into the BIOS to tell it I'm installing faster processors. I press F2, it will say 'Entering Setup'. Then it goes to a screen that checks my SCSI disks, after that, when it's going into the BIOS, it ends up at a blank screen, and doesn't do anything, and there is no beeping to indicate a problem.Maybe the hardware isn't entirely compatible with the processors you're trying to install. What if you test them one by one?the only thing plugged in on the inside is one stick of RAM, the two 933MHz processors and the power switch. when I started it up, it flashed the computers stats, during the ram test, saying it had two 700MHz cpus. then it went through the SCSI BIOS, telling me there were no SCSI disks, then I got two errors, 1: Processor FSB frequency mismatch, and check date and time. I just need to know how to get into the BIOS, because it's basically ignoreing me when I press F2.

any idea would be great, thanks

ViperWhy don't you use one of the many system information tools (see the software FAQ; link in my signature) to provide the motherboard and chipset model/details. Possibly someone then can research processor compatibility for you.Try resetting the CMOS to its default values by either shortcircuiting the jumper or by removing the battery.

Perhaps you can boot the PC with only one CPU installed and from there alter the BIOS settings to your needs. I do not know wheter this applies to server mainboards or not, but does it come with any jumpers that allow you to configure the processor FSB and multiplier manually?Google rocks, and I DONT think those CPUs will work... or atleat not at their full potential

Solve : Another day, another problem :)?

Answer»

Yea, computers are annoying sometimes.. But I guess the same thing can be SAID about automobiles as well.

Anyway, here's the issue at hand:

I have an OnBoard Internet Controller (It's a Marvell Yukon) anyway, I play this only game the just doesn't seem to agree with the thing in anyway (I get disconnected) I've tried different computers running off the same router and modem (I also just used the modem) and it only happens on this computer (A new one, by the way)

So, I went into a plan to eliminate what I think could be the problem, but over-riding the problem cause.. Thus, I disabled my OnBoard Card (Port, w/e) and plugged an a Compaq 3121 I used a few years back, never a BIT of trouble with it either.. My computer just won't pick it up, at all.

I ran the Hardware wizard numerous AMOUNT of times, and still nothing.. It's like it isn't there. It works though, because the lights light up on the card itself (Telling me if the PC Line is good)

Just wondering if this is a case of my Motherboard not supporting that kinda card, or what gives? I'm running an Asus P4P8XSE.

Any help would be godly, trust me.If I understand you CORRECTLY you are saying that the Compaq network card was not detected by Windows (XP?) and your onboard NIC is giving you problems.

Are you certain your installation of Windows is proper?Grab a brand spankin new NIC card...i think my LAST one was 12 bucks...

Solve : Monitor light flashing; no video?

Ive tried almost everything now and Im at the point of despair.

When I START my computer up, I get only a flashing green monitor light. Thats it. Ive tried it on another monitor and it, being older, has a yellow light and says no signal. Ive tested my video card in another machine and its worked. Ive tested also my RAM in another machine, and I even bought a new motherboard today. Same problem. The last thing I can think of it being it the PSU, but that seems unlikely, because everything seems to be powered up fine, my fans and lights are running, and the PSU fans are too. Ive tried to boot up without power to my floppy, hard, and DVD drives with no success. Please help me! Ive had this computer for 2.5 years and I am running an 430 W Thermaltake PSU, A8N-SLI Deluxe (tried with a brand new SE too), 1.5 GB Samsung DDR RAM, 120 MB Seagate HD, AMD Athlon 3000+ Processor. I bought these all from NCIX btw. Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Ive just bought a new PSU and mobo, tried both, same problem. Ive had my RAM and Vid card tested in other computers and they work fine. Ive also tested on more than one monitor. It seems you haven't tested your CPU in a known working computer.

(AMD Athlon 3000+ Processor)could that be the problem that the monitor isnt RESPONDING? My CPU worked fine for 2 years or so, so it does work with this configuration (in the past). I was just told (and looked up) that the problem could be either with the motherboard, the vid card, the monitor, or the psu, nothing about a cpu. Strange things happen when a CPU overheats.

Have you tried cleaning the heatsink and CPU and applying
new thermal compound ,to SEE if it is still good ?Quote from: street1 on August 23, 2007, 06:15:04 PM

Im missing certain Items Like The Processor and Disk Drives I Already Have a AMD AM2 4200+ If Im Missing Somthing Else Please Help Me Get the Parts For THis PC
The only suggestion i would offer would be to spend a little more and get your RAM from a legitimate source...

Other than that...Well if u already have the AM2 CPU, then i wont tell u to buy a Core 2 Duo.

You should buy the WD 250GB HDD for ~75$, or any other WD HDD. They make better HDDs for less.

Remmember to spend as much money as u can on the graphics card..Iam Im going to buy a ge 7900 and wait for the 8800 price dropQuote

Iam Im going to buy a gt 7900 and wait for the 8800 price drop

Good idea.

Will u overclock the 7900 GT and volt mod? If not, consider the X800 GTO for ~125$ wich will give u around the same performance.

The X1950 Pro is a better choice than the 7900 GT, if u WANT a 200$ graphics card.My Range for A Video Card Is 200 So What DO u SuggestQuote

Solve : Using line-in on one sound card, speakers on other?

Answer»

Here's my issue: I'm a guitar player, and I recently purchased a nice set of USB headphones. My intention was to plug my amplifier into the line-input on my computer and then use the headphones. However, because the headphones have their own sound card, it doesn't work. Basically my integrated sound card (which has the line-in or mic jack, I've tried both) won't sent the signal over to the USB sound card built into the headphones. So I can't hear my guitar over these headphones. I need to know how to make this work. So far the closest I've come is using a recording program that plays as it RECORDS, but it has lag (it's really disorienting to play guitar and listening to everything a second or two after you play it). I've played with all of Windows XP's MIXER settings and got nowhere. Does anyone know how to do this?

The other issue is practically the same problem but with my TV tuner card. I don't have a TV, just this card for my computer. However, the tuner card has an audio-out port like most CD drives have, that plugs straight into the sound card (my integrated one). I can't hear TV on my headphones, either.

It seems to me that all I need is some kind of ROUTING or BRIDGING software that will send the input signal from my integrated sound card to the USB one. The USB headphones have no inputs of any kind.

My integrated sound card is a Realtek AC97. My headphones are LTB Mentor True 5.1 USB Surround Sound.

I know I can use standard analog headphones on my AC97 speaker out and have that work, but then I'd have to return these USB headphones, which I don't feel like messing with unless absolutely necessary. If the USB HEADPHONE is a proper soundcard (I've never seen those things, so I might be mistaken) you should be able to select it as a recording device under Start -> Settings -> Configuration -> Sound and Audio Devices -> Audio tab. Choose a soundcard accordinglyIf I were you and had the option to return the USB headphones, I think I would do so. Then, I'd start looking for a sound card to replace the onboard sound and for some standard headphones that would connect to a regular phones jack on the sound card. Seems to me this hardware would serve your purposes better than what you're trying to work with now.

Solve : Disabling laptop touchpad/stick?

Answer»

Hey guys, I'm not entirely sure where this thread belongs but I've got a friend who has an old laptop that has a USB mouse connected to it and she need to disable the touchpad and the stick in the MIDDLE of the keyboard because it gets annoying while she's typing and the cursor moves and sometimes messes up her documents by closing them or something. I honestly don't KNOW what type of computer or the major specs that should be listed but I know the OS is either Windows 98 or 2000. I haven't worked enough with those to know how to do it. I can do it on XP but don't know how from 98 or 2000. She's already tried going to the Control Panel and going to the Mouse icon but she said it doesn't give any way to disable it. Any SUGGESTIONS? Thanks guys!If you have a make and model, we can get some drivers . . . usually you need to INSTALL the correct drivers, and the pad can then be set to disable itself when an external device is plugged in.Try following instructions given on following page: http://help.cnet.com/9602-12576_39-0.html?messageID=2507805

It should work for most, if not all touchpads. Thanks guys, I'll try those directions and see if that works. Sounds LIKE what I already did but I'll read them again and double check. Calum I'll try and get the specs on it for you. Thanks again guys!OK, if you can find the make and model that'd be useful.
Let us know how you get on.

Solve : Combo Drive will read audio CD's - Will not burn them.?

Answer»

I have a CD/DVD ROM combo DRIVE. LATELY, when I try to burn a CD it will go as far as to 'initialize' the burn, then it fails and ejects the disc tray. I thought it may have been the disc, but I've tried several more and still have the same problem. In iTunes it gives me an 'unknown error', in Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 it gives me this text:

Code: [Select]Sense: 04 ASC: 09 ASCQ: 00 (Command 2A)
-------------------------------------------------------
Px.dll: 2.7.17.500
PxAFS.DLL: 1.0.0.1
pxdrv.dll: 1.1.63.0
PxMas.dll: 2.7.17.500
PxSFS.DLL: 2.7.17.500
PxWave.dll: 2.7.17.500
PXWMA.dll: 1.0.0.3

It will read audio CD's and also DVD's. The driver is up to date as far as I know and Windows says it is fully operational. Any ideas what may be causing the problem? Here is my BASIC computer info:

Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, SP2
Mobile AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3400+
2.21 GHz, 512 MB RAMHow old is this drive ? ?
In many units different lasers are used for reading and writing...in other words it would be doing what yours is reading but not writing.
New burners can be had now for around 40 bucks shipped...i prefer newegg as an online source...Quote from: patio on September 29, 2007, 08:59:31 PM

It's not old, maybe a few years. I've never had this problem up until a few weeks ago. The more DETAILED specifications can be found here (expand 'specifications'): http://www.emachines.com/support/product_support.html?cat=Notebooks&subcat=M-Series&model=M6811Try it in another machine...if it does the same thing it needs replaced.

Well I am having sound problems, I cant hear sound/music from Realplayer or EVEN WMP but I can hear music/sounds from my games (Guild Wars, Counter-Strike: SOURCE, Starcraft) but when I try to PLAY a music file while running a game like Guild Wars I crash and my computer stops/freezes. I check the DXDIAG for both Music and Sound they work fine and my Sound Settings/Properties are all up no mute. Any help WOULD be appreciated, thanks in advance.Ha! I found out the problem, it wasn't Hardware Conflict, it was SOFTWARE Conflict with RealPlayer and Quicktime Player, -_-Google both realplayer alternative and quicktime alternative you won't be disappointed.Quote from: Fed on August 24, 2007, 02:28:50 PM
