Solve : Using an RCA LCD TV as a PC Monitor?

Answer»

I'm looking for some advice concerning some display problems that I'm having.

I just purchased an RCA 32" LCD HDTV (model: L32WD12; spec sheet here: http://tv.rca.com/NR/rdonlyres/8FE5C137-8504-4009-B6AA-9424D07BDBDD/0/L32WD12.pdf).

I've connected the TV to my PC's video card via the VGA ports on both devices. The video card is an ATI Radeon x850 XT Platinum Edition (256 MB RAM; specs sheet here: http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonx850/radeonx850series/index.html).

The problem I'm having is that there is a bad shadowing affect on the TV when I'm using it as a PC monitor (television looks OK). I refer to the problem as "shadowing" instead of "ghosting", because it is always visible, even with still IMAGES such as the icons on the desktop. A good example that I can use to try to explain what I'm seeing is that when my mouse cursor is sitting still, I can see two more "dimmer" mouse cursors to the right of it. This same shadowing effect exists on all graphics, whether on the Windows Desktop, within games, etc. This results in the display quality being very poor.

I've spent a significant amount of TIME adjusting the display settings on the TV and the Video Card, to no avail. I was able to improve the display very slightly by increasing the contrast setting on the video card; however, I noticed that for all practical purposes, none of the adjustments that I make have any real affect on the shadows. I also updated my video card's drivers to the latest version, but that didn't have any NOTICEABLE affect.

So, with all of that being said, here are my questions:

1. Does anyone have any general advice on what might cause this and how I can correct it?

2. My video card has a DVI port, and the TV has an HDMI port - if I connect the video card to the TV using a DVI->HDMI cable, what are the chances that could correct the problem?

3. Someone told me that problems like this were usually related to signal strength. While I'm aware that is an important factor when dealing with coax cable and TV connections, but is the idea of "signal strength" applicable when dealing with a VGA connection? If so, what could I do to improve it?

Thanksuse 32' LCD TV as monitor, i'm going to do that also, hope u'll get yout answer.

your friend may b right, signal strengh problem,
try use different of video input connection, DVI -HDMI, or find something can boost up the signal.
try from the cheaper way
good luck
I broke down and bought a DVI-HDMI cable, and that solved the problem for me. There is no shadowing at all now, and the display looks really good. Admittedly, that was an expensive way to go, though - since I wanted the cable right away, I didn't look around online for a good deal. I just went to Circuit City and bought what they had - a 6' DVI-HDMI for...ouch...$129.

I've been told that perhaps my original problem was just due to a low quality VGA cable, so I might have been able to have gotten an acceptable display quality using another VGA cable. So, if you have any problems when you connect your PC to your 32" TV, it might be worthwhile to try a second VGA cable before you make the investment of the DVI-HDMI cable.wow!, that what i said when u told me that 6" DVI HDMI cable cost u $129. ouch... heart pain...
but it really solve your problem. thanks for the advice.
i'm not change my monitor to 32" yet. $ is the problem. plus i'm not think windows vista stable enough. at least wait for next services pack realease 1st. (my idea of getting 32" LCD as monitor is just bcoz 1:i wanna get a core 2 duo with SLi mode graphic.
2:vista user interface is suitable for this.wide SCREEN)

so the 1st thing already broke me down........

Solve : Building a new pc soon, need some help with graphics, motherboard etc.?

Answer»

I intend to build a new pc in the near future. Right now I'm looking at parts and stuff and most likely there'll be some parts with features I've never really USED before.

So far the only thing I've just about decided on is the processor - the Intel Core 2 Duo E4400. Now I do intend to salvage some parts from this pc I'm currently using such as the two IDE Hard DRIVES(will buy a SATA hard DRIVE in the future), the 2 DVD optical rewritable drives and perhaps the AGP Radeon X1300 Pro Video Card which brings me to the first question.

Now one of the new parts will definitely be the motherboard and I have a hard time choosing. First I know that it has to have a LGA 775 socket (Sockect T) for the aforementioned processor. My main concern is the Graphics card because in the future I want to buy a PCI Xpress graphics card and put it in this motherboard. Is it possible for a mobo to have both PCI-X and AGP slots for graphics cards?

Now I never had a motherboard with PCI-X slots so this will be my first. I would really like to use the AGP for my current graphics card and get a PCI-X graphics card later down the line and remove the AGP graphics card when that time comes(without having to buy a new motherboard). If the answer to my question in the above paragraph is yes can you recommend some good motherboards with both PCI-X & AGP slots for graphics cards(nothing too expensive, looking for the best bang for my buck)?

That motherboard also has to have good(passable) sound built in until I get the money to buy a good sound card. As for RAM, I interested in buying 2 gigs of DDR2 but if there are DDR1 slots in the motherboard as well I could use the RAM I am currently using until I replace with DDR2 but the motherboard must have DDR2 slots.

In a few years I'll upgrade the processor to a Quad 2 Quad but it should work in the motherboard because of the processor socket right? Lastly SLI/Crossfire capability N the motherboard, it doesn't really matter to me, I doubt I'll be able to afford 2 PCI-X graphics cards and run them parallel. Just curious, is there any REAL performance boost in doing this?

Thanks in advance for any help.
There are some motherboards with both AGP and PCI- Express but they are bit hard to find. Here's one from newegg.com: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157107

Solve : Flash Disck Help?

Answer»

Hello, I just got my computer fixed, new mother board put in and a new hard drive. I went to put it my usb flash disk and the screen went blank. I tried both the front and back ones. What does this mean? Do I just need to instal a driver or something? Do I need to take it back to them to FIX it? PLEASE please no computer lingo. I know my basics but nothing beyond that. Any help would be APPRECIATED. If you could post the specs of your machine that might help solve the problem

Go ONTO Start, Programs/All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Information.
Post all it says there.

Also, when you say the screen goes blank, does the monitor itself turn off? Or does the computer restart in any way, or do you have to switch it off and on manually?

Solve : SATA format problem?

Answer»

I want to format 80GB SATA HDD under DOS using format /s command.
1st, im using FDISK and set 1st DOS partition, but a weird things occur.
It only show 10GB after fdisk.
Then i boot into my USB flash drive DOS, i use format :SATA drive follow /s
after format, it is not a DOS partition,i cant boot my SATA HDD.

The only way i found is , boot to XP CD then format the partition to FAT then exit after format.
Aftet that i am use my USB flash drive to format it with format /s.

DOS (if that's what you are really using) ended it's life LONG before SATA was even around.

If you are trying to use XP and are talking about command prompt, etc. then you do not need to format it this way. Just boot with your XP CD and have the SATA drivers ready when ASKED and press F6.

Perhaps you could clarify exactly what operating system, what you are doing and how, and what the final goal is.oh...i forgot to tell the purpose.
actually just a simple goal: make my SATA HDD have a OS.
the fast way i can think is DOS.
once the user on the unit, then is a DOS BASED HDD.
But i can't using the simple command format/s to make it a DOS HDD.
And this is DOS 6.22 or what?I am using my WIN98 bootable USB flash drive to format/s it.

And i also try using DOS 6.22 bootable diskette to format.

Quote

DOS (if that's what you are really using) ended it's life LONG before SATA was even around.

I don't think you will be able to access the SATA drive this way.

Solve : Urgent need help please read!!?

Answer»

So, I have a major paper due in a few days, and just this evening i spilled water all over the keyboard of my laptop. It's an Averatec TABLET with microsoft windows xp. It's been having issues with the moniter for awhile--I have to beat on the egde of the screen to make it clear up, because the pixels go all wierd, like turning colors, ESPECIALLY red. When the water spilled i immediatly turned the computer upside down to PREVENT water from seeping into the interior. The sound that had been playing went all funky so I turned off the laptop. A few minutes later i tried turning it on again, but the pixels kept turning blue and red so that i couldn't see images. I tried beating on it like always but then the WHOLE screen started turning red and pink in horizontal and then vertical lines, and nothing i did fixed it. So I turned it off again, and it took me at least 4 pushes of the power button to actually get it to turn on and boot up, after it repeatedly turned on for a few seconds, then shut off. SO the fourth time was succesful. It's still taking many tries to turn it on and boot up. Also, there's no sound, not even the little startup ditty. There's just crackling. Plus, when I try to play something, the music doesn't play--and i mean that the progress bar and the seconds COUNTDOWN don't move, even THOUGH a song is selected.
This is the final straw. I am getting a new computer come Christmas time. Until then, I have the end of a semester and allof its' papers to finish. So i need the computer to work. Any suggestions?take out your hard drive, try to find a temp pc to continue your work, sent your laptop to repair,
that what i'll do,
anybody got any idea?what can i say is u still lucky u can recover your data in hard drive. i'm not that lucky like you.
i blow my hard drive before i pass up my final project and only recover back 50% from my backup disk. :-/Frequent backups on anything other than a hard drive is always a good idea.

You're going to need to get that machine repaired as it has multiple issues so salvaging the data is the way to go. You can get a desktop to notebook drive adapter for about $10 at a computer shop, compUSA, etc.

Solve : RAM Confusion?

Answer»

I've been thinking about installing RAM on my computer and I've done lots of research on the INTERNET. But I noticed one thiing about it. It is a 1 gig DDR RAM Stick. The RAM I wish to install has the numbers 3200 in the title. I was just wondering, what is it for and how do I figure out what my current computers RAM "number" is?Hi Joe welcome* start with this ...............

read this on Ram*

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_SDRAM

Go to here and DOWNLOAD this free program and it will tell you what type Ram you have.....

http://www.filehippo.com/download_everest_home/

after you install this, click on the computer icon and it will display what you have inside your computer....

Thanks! It seems like that program you SUGGESTED gave me all the answers I needed. I will WORK. Thanks! You can go to www.crucial.com and see what is in there and what exactly you need. Some computers can not use 1 gig. sticks, but qas we don't know the computer or motherboard make model, we can't advise further. Some manufacturers are very specific what will and won't work.

So what is the hardware involved?

Solve : old school question-graphics?

Answer»

Just replaced my hard drive on my old thinkpad i 1400 series model 2611-412 with a new one. Problem is that my display is now only a standard pci graphics adapter with only 2/16 colors and only 640x480 mega pixels! I used to have good graphics with my old hard drive. How do I change this. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.have you installed the latest graphics drivers for your card?not even sure what card is in the laptop. The specs say it's svga??How did you install Windows on the new hard drive, by using a Microsoft CD or a Restore CD from the computer manufacturer? If the latter, it should have the video drivers on it. If the former, you need to visit the computer manufacturer's website and download the DRIVER. Might be a good idea to do that in either case, to get the latest driver.driver for what? not even sure if there is a card or it is integrated. Just says svga. Also can't find drivers?Doesn't MATTER whether it's a card or it is integrated, you need a driver for your display adapter. Where did you look? Check the IBM CD that shipped with the MACHINE...Look on the bottom of the laptop and post the machine code there. It is a 7 digit COMBO like xxxx-xxx. Then we can point you in the CORRECT direction.

Solve : Bios doesn't recognize memory...sometimes?

Answer»

Ok so here's the issue.

I had a PROBLEM with not all memory being recognized by the bios, only 256mb shown, but Windows' System information would show all 512mb.

Occasionally all the RAM would be recognized and useable, but after awhile it would revert to only 256mb again.

This situation was really impeding the performance of the system, so i decided to buy another 512mb stick, so i would always have at least 512mb available.

However this didn't solve the problem as i would hope, and despite me trying them in all slots and different combinations, only 256mb RAM will show up. Occasionally 1024mb will be available, and this total also shows up in system information, but it doesn't happen often.

Anyways, i'm wondering, what COULD be causing this? I've run memtest for long periods of time and no problems are found with either stick, and i doubt it is a motherboard fault if the total does actually show up in system information.

Here's the best information i can find

Thanks to all who can help. You either have bad or incompatable RAM. Put only one stick in and see what it shows. Run Memtest on it (www.memtest86.org for a free download). If there are no errors after an hour, remove it and put in another and do the same procedure. Then start adding two at a time and see the results, so you can pinpoint where the exact problem is. Write down your results and post them. We'll leave the light on.

Solve : RAM question?

Answer»

I have a Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 AM2 NFORCE 570 motherboard in my PC, which to my understanding can have a max of 4gb of RAM. Currently I have 2gb of RAM and I was wondering, if I were to UPGRADE, can I just add 1gb at a time, or do I need to add 2? I guess the reason I'm confused is that in the old days you couldn't add 128mb if you already had 256mb (for example), but you had to add it in doubles (or at least that's what I remember being told....) If you have 2 x 1 gig sticks in there now and you want to add one more 1 gig stick, for a total of 3 gigs (3 sticks) thats fine*

Keep in mind- 32bit Wndws VISTA will not recognize 4 gigs of ram.....

No, I have 1gb sticks, and I'm still using Win XP Pro. just an idea* newegg (and other companies-I'm guessing) offer much better $$$ deals if you go ahead and buy 2 sticks (dual channel kits) instead of just one.
I myself want to go to 3 or 4 gigs...

1 gig is 60.00

2 gigs is 109.00 food for thought*

gonna get a better sound card instead.............

Unless you are running 64 bit version of Windows you're wasting that money on RAM...
Yes it can be done...yes you can make it be recognised...No it will never be utilised...Quote from: patio on August 14, 2007, 09:17:05 PM

Unless you are running 64 bit version of Windows you're wasting that money on RAM...
Yes it can be done...yes you can make it be recognised...No it will never be utilised...
Three questions: 1. So you're saying 2gb is enough RAM? 2. How do you FIND out if you are running 64 bit version? 3. What is the difference between 64 bit Windows and regular Windows?Patio seems to think (and many others too) that for us general PUTER users its a waste to invest in more memory than 2 gigs- and I'm glad he said it again, I almost wanted to get one more stick myself but he's right, it will probably just lag there (a waste)......
So 2 gigs for gaming, some basic media apps and just about everything not requiring intensive data flow should be plenty good. Including if you have Vista.

here is a link to the mothership where this guy kinda explains 32 vs. 64 bit systems .......... "novice users like me need No 64 bit os"

HTTP://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/64bit/russel_x64faq.mspxIf 2 gigs of RAM on an XP machine is n ot enough, then you have other issues.

"Filling the slots" is expensive and minimul to no return on the investment.

Hello i recently moved and my computer won't get internet (my other one) no matter what we do we tried doing ports, cables, resetting winsock, going directly to modem, and everything but no matter what the computer just won't notice that the cable is in there - when the cable is plugged in the orange LIGHT appears near the cable on the back of the tower but no internet. Dell says i need a new motherboard but a couple of peopel i know think that they are just trying to get me for 300$ and that I could possbiyl just buy a new NETWORK card.... i found this site and it looks like you guys are good so please reply... i need your helpHave you checked your BIOS settings? You may need to enable onboard LAN.

Any, yeah, a network card may be solution, one that would be much less expensive than a motherboard replacement. Here's a network card I'd recommend: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833124107Thank you - i was looking at a similiar one to this one before you replied - ill give you the link and can you tell me which one ill be better off with?

can you also tell me the steps to find the bios and sutff or w/e? i recently moved and it worked fine before the move also we tried like everything with my IPS service and dell doing like ipconfig and stuff in cmd like thatto get to the bios screen:-
When you turn yourr pc on you will probably get the compaq logo screen if so just press the tab button then in the bottom left corner should say " enter f1,f2 or delete"
i cant remember which one it is of hand but it is only one press the required button then you will enter a grey screen i think or maybe blue (sorry for the confusion it's been a while since working with dells)

goto advanced options there you will have an option for the onboard lan with in one of the categorys listed, make sure it is enabled then save the changes and exit see where you go from there sorry if this is a little confusingQuote from: Chris99 on August 14, 2007, 10:19:25 AM

Mainly due to the better review rating on the on http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16833124107 , I'd choose it out of the two. However, here's one priced at only $6.99 plus shipping and the reviews are good: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833156107

Regarding how to ACCESS the BIOS, see http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htmWell i saw the one that was 25 dollars at staples and I bought it but im waiting to put it in cause my uncle said he would like to try SOMETHING with the computer first but i ca't get in contact with him.OK, well, please post back and let us know how it goes. I think this is poor information as he already said Dell, not Compaq. Dell is generally F2, but it will say on the screen what to press to get to setup.

Solve : Cd Drive help please, tried everything?

Answer»

hey all, need help

3 days ago my cd drive stopped playing all types of cds. it seems to of stopped right about the time i unistalled poweriso. these are the things i've tried so far:

* Unistalling the device and restarting windows and drivers are re-installed
* Deleted the upper and lower filters from the cd registy
* CHECKED manufactures website for drivers but the device uses the build in drivers.
* used the microsoft autorun fix
* tried installing poweriso again and played AROUND with some of the OPTIONS to see if i left anything on that might of caused a problem in the registry

None of the above have worked. The weird thing is that the only disc my pc will play is the Windows reload cd?? any SUGGESTIONS please i really dont want to have to reload the whole system, cheers

heres what cd drive im using:
MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8572 (cd/dvd combo)
SCSI CDROM Class
Windows xp sp2How old is the drive and has it had a lot of use. All CD drives die eventually. Luckily they are cheap to replace (unless they are a real SCSI drive and you want to replace that. IDE drives are VERY inexpensive.)

If you haven't made any changes to your system, moved it, etc. it could have just given up. Real pressed CD's are easier to read than CDR's that have been burned. There is no telling what PowerISO did, but that seems to be the thing that put it over the edge right?

You can delete all refernces to the CD drive in Device Manager and reboot. Sometimes you GET lucky and that clears things up.

I turn my computer on and my maxtor 160 gig hardrive MAKES a clicking noise then it beeps.. it does it over and over again.. eventually it stops but whenever i restart my computer it does it again.. it seems like it cant boot...and i put in my windows cd to try to repair it but my computer says it doesnt detect and hard disk!!!! I THINK my hard drive is fried...so what do i do.. its only a year old and i have a 3 year warranty so cant i get another one?Commonly known as the Click of Death...that HDD is GETTING ready to fail...
Backup what you can ASAP. There may not be much time. The more you try to use that drive the further away data recovery becomes.A lot of Maxtor DRIVES 100 gig. or more frfequently fail in about a year. Use that warranty and if you can't get your data, just remember that ALL hard drives die eventuially and not the appropriate place for a single backup of important data.

Solve : Creative Sound Cards?

Answer»

I want to upgrade my basic creative sound card to a premium card. (this is what I currently have and it works pretty good- Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 )

My sound preferences are somewhat modest and I am not a big audio BUFF but want a great performing card .....

I would love to hear any INPUT from our members on this subject and even info on a different brand name if its a good product. Any feedback is appreciated . Which of these 2 cards would be better ?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102014

or this one ?

Creative has been the popular choice for as long as I can remember...and either one of those cards should work well if your system meets the minimum system requirements.

Here's something else you may want to look into for just a little more money: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829102015lol, I am leaning towards that one because I have no extra 5.25 bay room.* I just read reviews on it and I think its the best choice though I hate to think of another month of Ramden noodles ! (price is HIGH) thanks for reassuring my thoughts...Quote from: honvetops on August 12, 2007, 09:04:29 AM

I want to upgrade my basic creative sound card to a premium card. (this is what I currently have and it works pretty good- Creative Sound Blaster Audigy SE 7.1 )

My sound preferences are somewhat modest and I am not a big audio buff but want a great performing card .....

Hmmm, honvetops, I guess I just don't get it. If your sound preferences are somewhat modest and you're not a big audio *censored*, then why do you need a a great performing card? That's a contradiction if I've ever seen one. The card you have should be absolutely fine for your needs. Quote from: soybean on August 12, 2007, 10:18:09 AM

Here's my point. I would like to hear all these sounds I am not hearing with my current sound card in gaming-(the review on these cards all say with their product you can hear much more audio in the game) ...

I guess I would like a card with more tweaking ability.... My bass is extremely over powering and the high's from my speakers are rather modest. A better card should increase the highs and allow me to adjust the over powering bass. Maybe I am a little more audio demanding than I posted, sorry.Well, you didn't mention gaming in your original post. Did you read the specs on newegg.com on those two cards you posted? I took a look and noticed the higher priced one describes a feature for GAMING MODE. Other than what I saw on newegg, I'm not familiar with these cards.Hey Honvetops if you want to get a real kick out of your games get one of those low frequency strap on backpack things that connect to your sound port through a 'double adaptor' thingie.
My kids have one, I only used it a few times because it was just too scary.
They let you feel the sounds in your body, great for FPS with the volume up and the lights turned off but keep a defrib machine handy. I've seen those too* I KNOW nothing about them though your story sounds pretty interesting with the kids !
My readings are saying if you can drop more bling, get the elite series...... Soy is right in that my current card is ok but I like upgrades especially since this would be on my newer puter. My speakers really need a higher quality card to utilize them better.Quote from: honvetops on August 12, 2007, 09:04:29 AM

I just found the above card on sale @ Circuit City at an unbelievable 99.00
in STORE pickup when purchased online- can't beat that price anywhere!!! ( can't beat this deal )

I hope the improved FIDELITY is worth it. What kind of speakers do you have? That may be a less expensive solution. So good to see you here Mark !! I ended up getting the X-Fi gamer card, it does everything the Elite pro does except no box & remote (109db verse 116 db ) big deal...

I have the 5.1 Logitech 5300z 280 watts

I will install this thing later tonight .... I hope you stick around for awhile this time ?Thanks for the "Hi" and I am planning a full return.

Solve : USB 2.0 inputs??

Answer»

On my old PC, whenever I would connect my camera it would give me the message "You can speed up this device if you connect it to a USB 2.0 connection" (or something to that effect). My computer didn't have any USB 2.0 connections, which I didn't worry about, since I was about to get a new PC anyway. So my new PC arrived a week or so ago and I connect my camera, and get the same message. Apparently my new computer doesn't have USB 2.0 either. How can I upgrade it? (PC specs: Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 AM2 Nforce 570 Motherboard, AMD X2 4600, 2gb RAM, Win XP Pro) Yeah, I know, for a new PC it ain't that impressive, but we can't all afford 'top of the line', LOL.I was just reading a little about USB 2.0 and it said that starting in 2003 all computers came with it. Hmm.... When I connect my camera I'm using one of the PORTS on the front of the case, could that be the problem? Are only the inputs on the back 2.0? Are they labeled differently or would they still just have the USB symbol? That board lists both 2.0 and 1.1 ports. Try a rear port.I'm surprised to see that on a new computer. My tower PC is that way, but the motherboard is several years old; it's an ECS K7S5A PRO. I installed a USB controller card (in a PCI slot) which PROVIDED two more USB 2.0 ports on back and also provided pins for re-wiring the front two USB ports so that they are now USB 2.0.That's what I was thinking, what would a new motherboard have USB 1.1 inputs for? What does the documentation say it's supposed to have? I see two versions of the M57SLI on newegg.com; the specs on both say "6x USB 2.0", no USB 1.1. Maybe your board is not functioning right. I'd contact the manufacturer's tech support. If you can't get it working with their help, you might want to return it.Quote

1. 1 PS/2 keyboard port
2. 1 PS/2 MOUSE port
3. 1 parallel port
4. 1 SPDIF out port (coaxial)
5. 1 SPDIF out port (optical)
6. 1 COMA port
7. 4 USB 2.0/1.1 ports
8. 1 IEEE1394a port
9. 1 RJ-45 port
10. 6 audio jacks (Line In / Line Out / MIC In/Surround Speaker Out (Rear Speaker Out) / Center / Subwoofer Speaker Out / Side Speaker Out)

This from the Gigabyte spec page...Well, shame on newegg. They don't have their facts straight.

But, the facts from Gigabyte don't seem right. A image of the motherboard on newegg.com clearly shows 4 ports on back. roccenstein said he connected his camera to a front USB port. So, a total of 6 ports seems to be the actual number. That info from Gigabyte is the listing for the back panel ports...the front ones are listed the same way...2.0/1.1roccenstein, have you tried your camera on a rear port? If you find connecting to a rear port inconvenient, you can get a USB extension cable such as http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812119004I haven't tried it yet, but will as soon as I get home tonight. Hypothetically speaking, if the rear does the same, is there any way to configure settings so that they do WORK as 2.0? I'm just wondering if they defaulted to 1.1 for some reason (just grasping at straws). My hunch is the rear ports are functioning at 2.0. So, let's wait and see what happens when you try it. If you still get that message, let us know. We can pursue this further then. Either way, please let us know how it went. Some motherboards require the 2.0 drivers to be loaded. If you got a driver CD with it, look on there. If not choose hadware at Windows update and see if that fixes it.

Also see if there is a setting in the BIOS that enables/disables USB 2.0

USB 1.1 ports are perfectly fine for a USB keyboard and mouse, by the way.OK, I got it straightened out. It turned out to be what GX1_Man said. As I stated, this is a new computer, and apparently when I installed all the drivers that particular one got missed and showed up as a "?" in the device manager, once I HIT 'reinstall driver' it fixed the problem, and MAN is it FAST! After waiting almost 15 minutes to download about 120 pics plus a few video files on my old PC, I can't wait to try it with the new one. Thanks for all the help!

Solve : Ususing old HD , with new Mobo and Vid Card?

Answer»

I didn't read that there...

What is NVM ? ?

I suggest DLoading and burning the Ultimate Boot CD otherwise known as UBCD...There are many free tools on their including a few cloning tools...

Be careful and read each section as some of these are powerful tools indeed. Why would you want to clone what is not working CORRECTLY now?

i was talking about cloning this HD, the one that im using for this computer, however, i couldnt find good HD cloner, so i decided to re format and its not worth the viruses and spyware that comes with this HD, so i reformated HD, now when i go to install XP it keeps freezing during the installation, ive used my orginal CD, froze with that one, so i thought it may be a scratch, now i used my backup and STILL freezez, do you THINK there may be a problem with my HD, which is cuasing it to freeze the installion? Are these copies of original MS XP CD's ? ? ?Quote

I hoped he could prove to himself that what he was told will not work wouldn't...Hope on, Patio. I don't think he is quite there yet. No, ive cloned this HD before and it WORKED, but this time it didnt so im thinking a messed up HD, becuase all the times i TRY to install XP it keeps freezing...Quote
The new HDD manuf. utility ( free ) is probably the best choice...they have come a long way.

Solve : Old Laptop Resurrection?

Answer»

Hey everybody, i'm needing some help again. A couple of years ago i decided to PUT a cpu (from a desktop) into my Laptop. Back then i was new to computers and thought, 'i can just throw this 1 ghz cpu in, replacing my 500mgz'. well, ever since the THING wont start up. i have tried putting the old cpu back in, to no avial. I have both cpus still and i just want this old thing to work! The Laptop is acting like there is no cpu in it, I press the power button, i hear the fan start up, then... everything dies. Any help greatly appreciated guys!
-Midian

EDIT- here are the specs
Compaq Presario 1600 XL 145
8mb Vid
20gb HD
320mb Ram
Laugh it up, i know... i told you its old. It's a shame to run a perfectly good laptop, but you may have done that. Are you sure the CPU fan is on correctly and wired in correctly? If it were a desktop you could remove the CMOS battery for a bit and reset the BIOS. With a laptop it is a whole different thing.

I would suggest checking with HP (who now owns Compaq) for an idea if it is salvageable.

http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/contact/chat_1.htmli had a chat with 3 of their online technicians and wow.. learned nothing... they recommended that i take the RTC battery out for 30 seconds.. and umm, thats it. Oh and they also told me the 1 ghz cpu isnt compatible EVEN though thats what i told THEM. anyway im sure the people here can help me a little more than the idiots telling me what i already know.
Heres what ive tried-
-Taking the RTC battery out
-holding the power button 'on' with nothing plugged in (total Discharge)
-REINSTALLING the 500mhz CPU 3 times
and thats about all i could come up with, any other suggestions?I dont know if it is worth it to you but go to a local computer store and get some preffesional help. I know a lot of them in my area that have money back polices if they cant FIX it or al least recover the data.okay, now that i have been messing with it, i can get it to turn on(and stay on). attempt to read a disk in the cdrom, but still nothing on the monitor. i plugged it into my lcd, but still, nothing.

EDIT: I Tryed to flash the bios, but still nothing... im not sure this POS is worth putting any more money into it, im just trying to get it to start up.

EDIT2: I bought a new RTC battery and that didnt solve the problem either

Solve : IBM 300gl Problem #2: No CD or Floppy Drive?

Answer»

Well the IBM has no floppy drive or cd drive so im wondering can I put the harddrive in a different computer, install the OS and get the harddrive to work in the IBM? Also, If i do that will it over write anything on the Motherboard or w/e of the computer I put the harddrive in? In my mind I dont think it is going to wipe everything, and it will work but I thought id better check with the pros first.Floppy drive...about 12 bucks...

CDROM drive ....about 20 bucks...

I'd install both.

Well I might be getting both for free, or I might BUY them like you said but I was wondering If I can actually get the computer running with an OS before i bought them or got them for free. What OS are you throwing on that machine ? ? ?

After which how do you plan to install programs without a flopp or CD drive ? ?Windows 2000, and im getting the cd drive later and most programs I use are freeware.Well just to put CLOSURE to the IBM I had, im not going to keep it due to lack of parts, random mother BOARD, random graphicds card; basically stuff i'am not willing to fool around or buy yet.Sometimes there is no substitute for a closet full of parts. This could be one of those rare instances where we can say i'm glad you didn't get it fixed up.

Solve : RAM fits in Comp but Monitor doesn't turn on. HELP?

Answer»

I recently purchased a 512 MB stick of RAM for my PC. I made SURE it worked with a PC shopmen, and I made sure my motherboard was compatible. I have 0 viruses etc and 20 gb of free memory. My comp is a Compaq Presario, a bit old so the Motherboard can only sustain 512 MB of RAM. I put the stick in, success! It fits. We then turn the PC on, it WORKS, but the monitor stays OFF. We checked 5 times to see what was the problem with no success, so my brother and I then put the 126 MB of RAM back in (it was hard to get a hold of this, my comp is living in the 90's) and the 126 MB of RAM worked, and then we moved the 512 over a slot, to no avail it STILL wouldn't work. Can you tell me what is wrong? I will post my SYSTEM specs and the RAM specs.

RAM: 512MB PC133 CL3 (SDR below)

System Specs:

OS: WINDOWS ME (soon to be XP)
Type: Compaq PC
Manufacturer: Compaq
Processor: Intel Pentium III, ~930 MHz
Current RAM: 126 MB
DirectX: 9.0b
Series of Compaq: 5003 US (of the 5000 Series)

Can ANYONE tell me why my monitor is not behaving and not turning on? This is extremely unfortunate. I am used to being let down/not getting what I want on a constant basis but this is just plain ANNOYING! PLEASE HELP!

Issue: 512 MB RAM works in PC but monitor does not turn on. Please read above.

Thanks.

~Sam
I believe the 5000 series could only hold 256 RAM per slot for 768 total. So, while it can use 512 RAM, it CANNOT use a SINGLE 512 meg. chip. I hope you can get your money back. I think they also used CL2 and some Compaqs are VERY particular about the RAM.

Have a read:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario+5000+Series+Model+5000US

Unfortunately, because "it fits" does not mean ANYTHING other than it fits.Ah Jesus, I'm sure I can get my memory back... but ... the inside of the PC, unless I didn't see, had only TWO slots, there was no third slot. Hm... does this STILL mean I can only fit 254+254. *censored*, this is really annoying.

And I think this is my PC, I checked, only 2 slots. This is my PC.

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario+5000+Series+Model+5003US%2E

But, I still think your right.256 is the biggest in any one slot in the 5000 series. Sorry. Well, now I know. Thanks, I'll just trade the 512 MB for 2x 256's. He'll let me do it, he's my bud. Haha, thanks though. Now I know. You're welcomed and let us know how it works with the correct RAM.

[ Memory Modules / DDIt appears so, if you have the right modules:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=GA%2D8SIMLThanks GX1_Man, but just a short query........

I looked on crucial before and found that link that you have provided which says my system has 3 memory slots, but I DEFINITELY only have 2. I'm no expert on computers but I know that much!! Why is it giving me wrong info on crucial? Does the everest report give you all the information you need?
Didn't this come out of a Packard Bell? They could have changed the specs for an OEM product. This site shows the model as a 2 RAM slot board also:

http://www.neoseeker.com/Hardware/Products/Gigabyte_8SIML/

This seems to be another VARIATION from a Packard Bell system:

Gigabyte GA-8SIML-NF7 (Columbia VP) motherboard

So I think Cruicial is correct IF that is a stock Gigabyte board. Obviously it is not. There were also various revisions on that model number. Why do ask the question? Is your computer running normal with 2GB of memory installed or not?

It appears Crucial is incorrect on the number of slots. Otherwise, their data on your memory is quite likely correct. Their competitor, Kingston, appears to have it correct, including the number of slots: Gigabyte GA-8SIML MotherboardMy computer is a Packard Bell, but Everest says my motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-8SIML. I don't know, i comfuse myself sometimes, sorry if I'm confusing you guys too.
My computer seems to be running fine with the 2GB of RAM in, just not as fast as I thought it would. Maybe my expectations were too high?!
I only ask all these (dumb) questions because I don't want to destroy my computer or anything. It won't blow up if I installed too much, will it?I'm no computer ginius or anything but RAM shouldnt make your computer run any faster and if it does it wont do it by much at all. Thats what the processor is for I believe. Everything helps a little at making it run faster but mainly its your processor.
LATER

JugaloJayXP really needs 512 to run smoothly, but more than that will probably not be noticeable unless you are doing high end gaming. As you have onboard video, I don't think that will be an issue.

PEOPLE usually succumb to that "more is better" philosophy, but it depends on your usage. It will not, however, cause your computer to blow up if you have too much.

Unlike what was told above, going from 128 or 256 to 512 of RAM will cause a noticeable improvement.

If your computer is slow, it is because of other issues.Cheers GX1_Man, you always seem to be the one who replies to my queries and it's much appreciated! You're welcome. We'll keep the light on for you if any more questions pop up.

Solve : Recording from S-video out?

Answer»

Hello...heres my problem..I am recording Powerpoint presentations with audio directly to DVD via the S-video out on a laptop. If the presentations has a video clip in it, the video won't playback on the DVD. All I get is a black box where the video clip should be....Any ideas??...Is this a video memory issue...a graphics / video card issue??...Thanks

MIf you hooked up the laptop to a TV does the video play correctly then? In some video playback modes, the video is only shown on the "primary screen" so you'll have to setup your dvd recorder to be the primary "screen".Yes.. the video plays fine when I hook it up just to a projector..I use the VGA out to the projector, then I send the s-video to the recorder....As long as the Powerpoint has no video, it records fine..Thanks for the reply..I still believe the problem is that you NEED to setup your recorder as the primary display device. How to do that depends on your graphics card. So can you tell US the name of your graphics card or if you don't know that give us the make and model of your laptop.Thanks..Its a Dell Inspiron 5100 XP Pro Pentium 4 2.79 hz.....I am getting a new laptop soon...and it will have an updated video and graphics card....How would I SET the S-video as the primary display device??....and will that affect the VGA output..as I will need to send the presentation to a projector as well...THanks

MOkay I think your graphics card is a Ati Radeon.
Try this: (note these steps might not work for you depending on what driver you've got installed. But think these are the steps that are most likely to be correct.)

Right click on your desktop and select "properties".
Select the "settings" tab and press the "advanced" button.
Look for a tab called "Displays".
You should have a PICTURE of a computer screen, a laptop and a tv screen.
Click on the circle icon under the tv screen.
Press okOkay I had already done that..and it works..both the primary and secondary will play video...BUT....now theres nothing on the laptop screen...and the presenter won't like that...When I get to the "advanced" tab theres the 3 options.. monitor, panel and TV....it will only allow me to activate 2 of the 3...Also what is the other button next to the circle button..A clone?....I do have an older Compaq Evo 1000 that will allow me to activate all 3...but the video will only play on the one that is designated as primary..not on the other 2 so THATS no good either..and when I did get the video to play when the projector is primary..the screen output was narrow..as if it had been set to 16:9.....I can come out of the recorder S-video into the projector..but the image quality is greatly diminished.....Are the newer graphics/video cards capable of allowing full video to all 3 outputs.....I know there are companies, other hardware devices that can do what I need but I'm trying to record these presentations as painless and inexpensive as possible....Any other solutions would be greatly appreciated..Thanks for your help.

Okay, I was trying to recall all of my basic complaints when my dino began having problems. I think the major one was I couldn't get my AOL info to click over to my screen name after I uninstalled AOL 9.0 Optimized, and Installed 9.0VR. Nothing anyone did helped and I got really TICKED. I think I wasn't able to click on my "Existing MEMBER" name until after I had the validation of Windows. I had to backdoor the "GUEST" name to get online with AOL. But also this happened, I never install or uninstall without a Tech, first of all. And, I was told to never uninstall AOL unless you have a copy online. You can uninstall it after the new installation. But one tech totally uninstalled aol before he installed the new copy. I just can't recall if that was before or after the validation.

Q: Is there a way to PEEK into the recycle bin?

Also, I know I'm putting a lot out there but you never know what might be helpful. I'm trying to help my cause.

Sure I'm having sympathy pains. This whole computer is one BIG pain if I'm not sitting infront of it.

I think the thing that I'm not able to understand mainly is what changed between the time when the computer did work well, and the time when it randomly froze and then blacked out.

Could you un-install AOL?

You mean to see what is inside the recycle bin? Just double-click on it to bring up the explorer windows.
I think the thing that I'm not able to understand mainly is what changed between the time when the computer did work well, and the time when it randomly froze and then blacked out.

Same here. I know that whatever happened happened after Windows was validated. I know because I wasn't having the black screen or BIOS page problem until after that. When WIndows was activated, 76 updates came in at one setting. Of course with a WGA on your comp Windows doesn't update. I had intentions of ignoring this thing forever, but my local repairmen said, That was my biggest problem. It might be causing the freezing in Pogo.Com. However, at the time Pogo.Com had problems with their games and members weren't aware. Even now they're having problems. But the freezing wasn't sending me to balck or BIOS. I got the black screen twice one night while using AIM. But when it threw me off the emulator. I was stunned. So with that and the connectivity errors from AOL they advised a reformat fearing a virus. But that reulted in the same issues, and they continue now.

Could you un-install AOL?

I know how to uninstall AOL. Are you asking me to do that? Why? I haven't unchecked the 3 items in "Start Up" yet. I'm being overrun with tasks that I have no idea why I'm doing them. I just need clarity.

Are you guys aware of "Belarc Advisor" a system tool for gathering your system's INFORMATION? Do you think it would help you, if I loaded that and did the scan?

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

BTW, how do I keep the 2nd page of the BIOS up long enough to read it all? Again, I'm sorry to inflict my ineptitude for computers on you guys but at least I'm asking questions and taking in what you're telling me. In other words, I appreciate you. Belarc Advisor will tell you what all the internal components in your machine are...Okay, but is it something that will give you guys needed info?Yikes! I finally got to see an error report during a freezing. Here it is:

Windows display drivers stopped responding

The ati2dvag display driver has stopped working normally. Save work and reboot the system to restore full display functionality. The next time you reboot the machine a dialog will be displayed giving you a chance to [upload data about this failure to Microsoft.]

The bracketed part didn't happen. Okay, so the screen wen to white this time. Not that there was a white screen rather than black but that everything was shown in whte with black fonts. Then it was grey after closing down the error window, then the next screen was teal (my desk top).

Also yesterday I managed to copy down info from my BIOS pages. If you think it might help I'll post it.Looks like you may have video related issues. I did a search on ati2dvag and came up with the below post. It's possible that many of your problems could stem from a video driver related issue.

http://www.modernstreet.com/general/ati2dvag-problem/This is sooo depressing. A virus. I told a few Techs that the way the black screens seem to go from not just games but to offline games, my AIM, when I was just posting even, that it seemed to be something spreading across my machine.

Thanks for the leg work Admin Hope.

BTW, Admin Hope...maybe you guys should sticky that link and advise people to consider that as the possible source of their problems if they have ATI. So after all it was just a Driver problem?
Yes.. I suppose that would explain it, as the answer would have to be software-related.
So when in Safe Mode, somehow the Virus/Issue didn't come up.

Casse,
Re-install the drivers for the ATI card - or tell me which card it is (using the Barlec Advisor) and I will find them for you. And then we will see if this persists.I hear ya Jess. I'll get back with you later. Right now I'm thinking, what about the modem. Is that still a viable cause as well? Should they both be investigated?

Well, the tech unistalled and reinstalled the driver, but no dice. Still freezes and goes black.

I went into the system devices as recommended in the link from Hope Admins, I was looking for the PCI STANDARD PCI-to-PCI BRIDGE,]/b]
but I didn't find that exact listing. This is what I did find:

PCI bus

******** CPU to CPI BRIDGE

***PCI to ISA BRIDGE

********PCI to AGP CONTROLLERS

The (*) represent numbers and letters that if needed will be furnished. Is one of these the equivalent to the PCI STANDARD PCI-to-PCIBRIDGE?

Thanks everyone.
The PCI Standard PCI to PCI bridge is located under "System Devices".

The modem is probably fine. This is a software issue.Yeah jess, I know. Those are what I found in SD. It was stated in the article from Admin Hope that not all machines will list the device as CPI STANDARD CPI-TO-CPI BRIDGE. To know what the listing is, ask the manufacturer.

Solve : Video Capture troubles :(?

Answer»

Hello all,

I recently decided I wanted to try recording my console games on my PC, so I got a video capture card and I've come to a few issues. First, when I try to use WinTV, it just doesn't work. I'm not sure if I just don't know how to find the right source for it (I'm using component plugs not the other things). I tried using VLC, which WORKED fine for video, but I couldn't get the sound from the capture card, it would only TAKE it from my microphone input. I don't really have a problem buying a DIFFERENT card if you know better ones, but I don't want to spend too much more than $80. I'd also really prefer an AV input, but that's more a convenience than anything.

Anyway, the second problem I have is that I want to be able to have it working on my TV and computer at the same time (I'd play on the TV while it records on the PC), and I have all the cords (2 extra sets of A/V cables), but I don't know how to get it split between the two sources. I got some y cables, but they are Male>female connectors, and I need 1 female split into 2 females.

Any help on either of these would be great, or if you have just better ideas that would be super too. Thanks much for your help!Your link is not valid. You can correct it by editing your post.Quote from: soybean on August 16, 2007, 02:20:25 PM

Hey all. I have just found out that my ram is bad and that it causes my computer to randomly crash without any BSOD or warning. Now I have found some new ram that I want to BUY, but my question is if they are compatible with my current system?

New Ram: https://www.databutikken.com/dk/Default.aspx?Product=2GBTWXD2800

My Computer:

Solve : A Wierd Problem With my Video Card... I Think?

Answer»

hey guys!

see... what's happening is: After my comp has been on for a few minutes OR if i do something which was to "put presure" on my video card (like enter a GAME, watch a video file ect.) The computer CRASHED and all goes back. It's still on! but my monitor isn't responding at all (I think it reboots, but the monitor stays black). When this happends the video card accelerates likes crazy and makes 5 times as much noise (I assume it's the fan going crazy)

Weird thing is. I've had this new comp for 6 months now and nothing's ever been wrong... with the Video card or anything els and now suddenly... this. I was ofcourse thinking "Overheating" which would be the obvious answer , but why it would OVERHEAT NOW... when it's been going great for 6 months is beyond me (i've ofcourse cleaned the comp, gotten rid of dust ect.)

I have a:

INTEL Core 2 Duo, 2,14Ghz
Geforce 7900 GS, 256mb
1 gig ram
550W Power...thing
hmm.. what els is needed?

I REALLY hope you can help guys! thank youOk you should check you Video card is seated correctly and also check your fan on the card for dust or blockage of any kind.... Can you also check all you fans come on when the pc is switched on ? what brand is the power supply? was it BOUGHT new or used?

overheating may be an issue here also, as you SUSPECTED. does your motherboard have onboard video that you could try using for a while to see if it doesn the same thing? If it's 6 months old i would check to see if it is still under Warranty...Quote from: Wrangque on October 01, 2007, 03:55:02 AM

(i've ofcourse cleaned the comp, gotten rid of dust ect.)

By this what do you mean did you remove your ram cpu etc, just make sure every thing is seated nicely

What version of windows are you using?
When did this problem start and did you install or remove anything around that time.
You say the screen goes black, does it look like the screen is turning off?its windows xp and i dont REMEMBER installing or removing anything... however i remember accepting a file on msn that might have been a virus... and yes... the screen goes black like it is turning off The most important factor is what specifically happened before the problem began. Downloading a file that might have been a virus is never a good idea. What was it and what virus/spyware protection are you using?

Solve : Inside my PC?

Answer»

ARGH! I had a Compaq 5003 US way back when, I got a much better comp in January and I'm planning on upgrading it. I have a Dell Dimension 4600i, with 1 Gig of RAM and ~2.80 GHz of Processor... 380 GB of HD space, I am having a bit of trouble with the ram though. I plan to upgrade to 3 GB of RAM. It has 4 slots for RAM and each slot can HOLD 1 GB, it said on www.crucial.com that the RAM needed to be installed in pairs, so I tried to move ONE stick over but since there was so many wires I couldn't get it installed in right. When I get the two gigs of RAM, can I put 1 gig next to 1 512 MB in each pair of slots? Or does it need to be 512 and 512? Either way, I can't see through all the cords to get it clicked in on both sides. Any SUGGESTIONS? Also, I am going to install a GFX card soon and I have no idea what is the GFX card, I found a card near the back of the Dell and there was 2 other slots like the one the card was in, are these GFX Card slots?

Thanks!

~NeciFiXI'm not sure but my hunch is you should put the two 512's together and the two 1GB's together. Regarding the difficulty of accessing the slots, you just need to take the time to do what's necessary to make them accessible. If that means disconnecting some cables, then so be it. Just connect everything back the way it was; that shouldn't be very difficult. If you're going to be inside the case doing such things as installing memory, you ought to be able to do this.

Take precautions to avoid ESD (electrostatic discharge) while working inside your computer case. One technique here is to touch a metal part of the case chasis before touching any components in your computer. What is the service tag on the machine? We can help you with that information.

Solve : Encrypted usb drive?

Answer»

I backup some data to a new maxtor one touch III usb drive which use maxtor drive encryption utility. When I need that drive to GET some data, I faced a problem that the drive is know well by the computer (device manager) but is not seen totally in my computer. I tried a lot of software to even format or managing the drive anyway but all failed (swissknife, partition magic, paragon, smart FDISK, acronis, Large drive tools), all of them see the disk but can not make any change to it. Some reports that it is LOCKED and others that I can not read/write and some other messages like PROTECTED drive. I am sure that the drive is perfect as it is seen rapidly by any computer running any operating system (INCLUDING linux).I suggest doing some searching for a solution at http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/ Seems like the encryption is getting in the way. I'd think their website has some info on this issue.Encryption has separated many a user from their data. It's THAT safe.I dont like encrypting data like that, it's not very safe and not practical.

Solve : Lapping your CPU?

Answer»

Perhaps we could sticky it in the "Bad Ideas" or "You've Got More Dollars Than Sense" section?Quote from: timrob on August 16, 2007, 12:33:41 PM

I saw this INTRIGUING thread and asked one of the Design Engineers here at work. I work for an automotive company and his comments should reflect the same for a computers CPU.

Anyway, I asked the Design Engineer about this issue. He said that the nickel cover is for a couple reasons. First, it's for corrosion. Nickel, or some kind of alloy with Nickel will corrode a lot less or not at all as compared to Copper. Everybody's seen their copper plumbing turn green after a few years. Granted, the amount of moisture between the two is magnitudes different. The second reason is for EMC-Electro Magnetic Compatibility protection. Without getting into the finer details, the Nickel cover protects for ESD(electrostatic discharge) and for EMI (ELECTROMAGNETIC Interference). Now I am not a teacher in the FINE arts of EMC, but I was responsible for EMC Testing on Heavy Duty trucks and Full size vans at another automotive company several years ago. And trust me, EMC is an art, more so than a science. So if you don't think you'll ever drag your feet on the carpet and grab your laptop or touch your computer case, or if your computer is in a metal cage that prevents all forms of radio waves from entering, or think the high frequency radio noise created by the computers various buses can't possibly interfere ever with the cpu, then go for it. Worst case, you fry the cpu and the mobo. Sticky that!

timrob thanx for the info that Intel and AMD have known for years...
They do things for a reason.
I think it's neat that an Automotive Design Engineer sees the common sense approach from chip manufacturers.
Great post...but enough about that...i'm assembling my topic on how to reclaim the Gold from your sticks of RAM and STILL see a performance boost while trading your Gold for dollars....

Look for it to be a stickie !did I tell anyone about my psu theory on removing the aluminum casing to reduce heat yet ?

Solve : Floppy Drive Noise?

Theres no disk in there, but it makes noises. What's wrong with it?

When?

All the time, or just during boot up?

Just occasionallyAny help? It happens when loading THINGS etc....Win 95/98/ME Or what

Random accessing of the floppy drive is common in Win 9x and is mostly caused by a rogue DRIVER DRVWQ117.VXD Renaming as .OLD might fix this.

Google for lots of info.My old computer does this (new one don't have a floppy drive), I always thought it was the antivirus programs looking for viruses randomly.Quote from: DJES86 on August 16, 2007, 07:09:09 PM
Any help? It happens when loading things etc....

It could be a lot of different things.

Dusty mentioned something above that I'd never heard before. I've used 98 for a long time now, and never had your problem, so that's probably why I never heard of it... never needed to look.

Be sure to do what Dusty suggested.

Once upon a time, I do remember that either some program or function was left in a default state such that the first thing it did was to attempt to access the A: drive. Therefore, every time it was used, the first thing I would get would be the jiggy-jiggy-jiggy noise when the drive spun.

The solution was simple. Access something on the C: drive with that function or program. Apparently it defaulted to wherever it was last used.

You've got something that is hitting your A: drive. We will assume that is not you clicking on it.
It could be some program you are running, either all the time or some of the time. You'd have to be observant and narrow it down.

It could be some infection. Again, you'd have to hunt it down.
You are running some good AV software, aren't you? kept updated?
How about Anti-Spyware? up to date? recently scanned?
In other words, are you sure you have no unwanted crud running?

You SAID it happens when "loading things".
Describe that more, please. EXACTLY what do you mean?

Solve : Upgrading Ram !!! Help !!! Also Video Card Question?

Answer»

Hey there today I have finally decided that it is time to upgrade my ram from 512 to 1gb and I really cant wait.. accept I need a COUPLE questions answered. I ran the program CPU-Z to find out all the information on my computer and this is what I got in the txt file

http://mrcracker.com/cpuz.txt

and from there i got my motherboard model and looked it up to find this:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00100539#N254

Now as my cpuz test shows that my current ram stick is a pc2100 (133mhz) now from the motherboard link i got .. which im pretty sure is the right model it shows that my max speed is a pc2700. Should I be getting that or should I stick with a 2100. Someone told me that its not good to mix different speeds so I'm asking you! Also as i went to newegg.com to look for a 512 stick i could buy i found many but im confused. what pin count should i be looking for if anyone could just point me to the right direction.

also my VIDEO card. this is a pretty old computer but it will be perfect for me once i get a video card upgrade. now by looking at the motherboard information it shows me that i have a Intel Extreme Graphics with Direct AGP which can have up to 64mb onboard memory if i upped it from BIOS. now on startup i pressed F11 to get to bios and for the video memory option it was set to 8mb. I pressed it to see what options there were and it was either 8mb or down to 1mb?? I dont understand that. Dont see no 64mb. Maybe im mistaking that for the cache or something. I would be happy if you can fill me out.

But I would also like to start looking for a new graphics card .. especially for gaming. If there is any pro here that would like to please fill me in what I should be looking for and what my motherboard can handle so I could start searching up on neweg It would be great! Or if anyone has any they recommend on newegg that my motherboard would support it would be great!

Hey Mr. Cracker !

you need 184 pin memory (my opinion would be to get 2# sticks of 512 mb ram RUNNING "dual channel" mode - fastest )

you motherboard will allow you to use a AGP video card, older tech but hey, its what you got.... 64mb < I BELIEVE that is referring to the amount of ram your mobo will support for the agp video card (taking memory from your sticks)

here's a link to the egg's ram which will work in your case.....
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010170147+1052407860&name=DDR+333+(PC+2700)

ps... don't mix the 2 # different speeds ie... ( pc2100 and pc 2700 ) it will run on the lower speed module always- keep it the same speed in dual channel mode if you can buy the 2 sticks*

Good luckThanks for the response! So I'll be looking at two pc2700 sticks.

So basiclly my motherboard only supports up to a 64mb video card? I always thought that my video card that I have now that came with the computer supported up to 64mb if I were to change it in BIOS.

By the way what do you think of this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144122in my opinion......anytime I see an item at the egg company with an excellent rating 80% or better It's got to be good.... I buy a lot there....
those are very nice sticks *

I would ask our members on additional info on the AGP cards if you like, I don't have much knowledge on those.....

Solve : Weird Monitor question?

Answer»

Hello, I need to reformat my computer. I just have wayyyy too much stuff, have what I want backed up already. But here's my problem.
A couple of days ago, while I was playing an online game, my monitor WENT black. No signal. So thats fine, it was plugged into the normal part in the motherboard. So I reach down, and plug it into my graphics card. It works just fine. I did try a few more times into the motherboard, but still no signal.
This is where I run into an issue. Like I said, I want to reformat. BUT I can only plug my monitor into my graphics card. If I was to reformat, I would have to plug it back into the motherboard, right? Or would it still work in my graphics card, without installing any drivers? If it doesn't, I wont be able to reformat lol.

I hope someone can make sense of this. Everyone else seems to think I'm asking if it will *fix* my motherboard, which I'm not, and it's causing me quite a headache lol.

It all depends on the operating system you're going to be using...

If it's Windows Me or above, you probably won't have to. When the video card was installed, you may have DISABLED the onboard video either through a jumper SETTING on your motherboard or through the sytem's BIOS. Either way...if you are reinstalling your operating system it would install a default driver which will work until you install the correct driver(s) for your video card.

Why reformat though? Why not just delete and uninstall what you don't need...run CCleaner...and then defrag? This will optimize your registry and hard DRIVE and you should be good to go. A little ROUTINE maintenance goes a long way.

Solve : #0 HDD error !?

Answer»

i bought a new HDD(Toshiba mk4032gax)40g for my Toshiba Dynabook satellite 1801 laptop.I removed the old one and inserted the new one, restarted the laptop to format and install O/S(win xp) ,the laptop wasted some time and displays "#0 HDD error ".The win xp boots, but at a point says that"HDD not DETECTED ,so installation cant continue.
Pls i WANT to know whether the HDD is damaged or the hdd IDE.I'm assuming the Toshiba hard drive CAME with no setup utility...most of them don't.

However, you may be able to visit IBM or Maxtor's webiste for a utility CD that will help you install the hard drive properly.

Try Maxtor's PowerMax: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?locale=en-US&name=SeaTools&vgnextoid=720bd20cacdec010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD

The above link is for SeaTools which has replaced PowerMax...USE the DOS version to see if you can setup the Toshiba with it and then GET back to us...

Solve : GeForce FX5200 problem?

Answer»

Greetings to the Group - I started getting an error with my system and would appreciate some help. I get an error NV4_DISP on the blue screen saying Windows is shutting down account of this error and is dumping my memory etc. The error also states that this driver is stuck in a loop and the device or the driver has a problem etc. I downloaded another driver from Nvidia website, w2kxp6693_whql, but it hasn't helped as the error is the same. I only get this when trying to run the two sims, MS Flight Sim and MS Train Sim. After running in Safe Mode, I can re-boot and all is well unless I try to run these two sims. Here is part of my system information and would appreciate some help so I can solve this problem. I have been using these two sims on this system for a couple of years. The only new change recently is a new DVD RW drive to replace a defective one. I don't want to buy another video card right now, but I need this one to work for a while.

http://www.christopherjason.com/articles/nvidia-nv4disp-problem/Hey thanks for your help. Unfortunately I'm still dead. I did get rid of the BSOD, but now when I try to open up the sims the system just locks up.

FYI here is the info from Nvidia, but it didn't help me either.

There are several factors that can contribute to system instability. SINCE the graphic card is always drawing to your screen, Windows will often report the graphics card or its drivers as the problematic device after a system error. In most cases, the problem is caused by another device or component in your system such as the motherboard, system memory, power supply or hard drive. Here are some tips to help you troubleshoot your computer.

Close unnecessary programs and processes in Windows XP and Vista.

Right-click a blank space on the Windows Taskbar and select Task Manager.
Click the Applications tab to view the list of active programs.
Click on any program listed in this window and click the End Task button.
Repeat until all programs have been closed.

The following steps are to close unnecessary processes in task manager:
Click the Processes tab to view the list of active processes.
Click the User Name column header to organize the processes by your login.
Click on any program listed next to your Windows login, other than EXPLORER.EXE and TASKMGR.EXE, then select the End Process button.

(Do not close processes running under SYSTEM, LOCAL SERVICE, or NETWORK SERVICE.)
Repeat the previous instructions until all programs/processes associated to your Windows Login are closed except for the following two:
TASKMGR.EXE
EXPLORER.EXE
DWM.EXE (Vista only)

If you have installed NVIDIA nTune please uninstall this utility for troubleshooting purposes through Windows Control Panel Add / Remove Programs.

Thereafter, close task manager and try to reproduce the problem.

If you do not KNOW who makes your motherboard chipset, please consult with your PC manufacturer or your motherboard manufacturer for more information.

The following motherboard BIOS settings are suggested for better stability, but are not required settings:

Assign IRQ to VGA Enabled
VGA palette snooping Disabled
PCI Latency Timer 128
Video BIOS Shadowing Disabled
Video RAM Shadowing Disabled
USWC Options Disabled
PnP O/S Installed Enabled
Video BIOS Cacheable Disabled
Video RAM Cacheable Disabled
AGP Graphics Aperture 64MB (or half of your total system memory)

Incompatible system memory or bad system memory can also LEAD to system instability. Please verify that your system memory has been tested and is compatible with your motherboard make and model. There are 3rd party utilities which allow you to test the integrity of your system memory. One such program is Memtest86 which is available as a free download from the following URL:

www.memtest86.com

Just as important is your CPU. If it is malfunctioning, it will cause system instability. There are 3rd party utilities to test your CPU. One such utility is Prime95 which features a torture test which reports to you any errors generated by the CPU. This utility may be downloaded from:

http://www.mersenne.org/freesoft.htm

If your NVIDIA Forceware display drivers are outdated, you may need to download and install the latest display drivers. You will find the latest Forceware unified display drivers for desktop graphic cards from our Software Downloads page at the following URL:

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

From the Software Downloads page, choose "Graphics Driver" from the first box - Choose the correct "Geforce Series " if you have a Geforce, Riva TNT2 or Vanta based graphics card. Choose Quadro if you have a Quadro based graphics card -> on the third box, choose the operating system you are using and then click the Go button. This will take you to the driver downloads page for your graphics card.

If your video card features active cooling, check that the fan on the video card is spinning. If it is not spinning, in particular when you are running a 3d application, then it can cause the video card to overheat. Last but not least, verify that your system meets the full minimum system requirements provided by your video card manufacturer.

If these steps do not resolve the problem, please contact the manufacturer of your video card (please note that NVIDIA does not manufacture video cards but only designs video chips). If you received your video card as part of a computer purchase, please contact the manufacturer of your computer.

Please feel free to contact us, if you have any further questions.

Regards,
NVIDIA, Customer Care.

Solve : BOOTING PROBLEMS ...MEMORY ERROR?

Answer»

My Intel P IV System with Intel D845 GVSR MotherBoard refuses to boot at MANY instances. It uses 256 MB RAM (Two 128 Stick). If the it is powered-on after the CMOS CELL removed and reinstalled, there is a screen showing the message that
'Memory error detected..
Memory TIMINGS reset to default settings
Preee F4 to enter Setup'
If the setup values are saved the system will work for sometime and then reboot or HANG at various intervals. And I have to repeat the above procedure for booting the system.

Could anybody help me?Take out one stick of RAM / reboot / run the system until it crashes..or doesn't. If it doesn't, then the other stick of RAM is bad. If it does, repeat the process to verify.

Post back with results.

Alan <>< Thanx ALEN,
Most probably it seems to be so.While I was running it with one RAM removed, and performed a 'memtest',20 locations of the RAM used were notified as damaged. And after a short while it restarted and hanged.I tried with the other RAM .It is working till moment without problem.
Let us see!!!!

Solve : Help: DVD/CD-RW on my laptop doesn't work?

Answer»

Hey..
I have a problem with my DVD/CD-RW on my Toshiba laptop.
It STOPS reading all my discs like CD-R, DVD, and CD since yesterday. The day before it was working perfectly, ripped songs from my original CDs.
Now it has stopped functioning.
I don't know what went wrong...

Did it get fried?

I uninstalled the hardware and rebooted it. LET Windows XP REINSTALL it.
The hardware STILL can't read any discs.
This is frustrating.

Btw, my laptop is 3 years old.

Does anyone know how to fix the problem?
The drive may have failed. The best method to test this is to swap the drive into another machine and see...
Unfortunately since this is a laptop this narrows down that possibility.
Is there a Toshiba Authorised SERVICE center in your area ? ?

Solve : Monitors?

Answer»

I have a relatively old but still OBVIOUSLY usable Toshiba Tecra A1, which has been my faithful companion for the past four years now. It was used when I received it -- having been my mum's for the first two -- but still in good condition. HOWEVER, regardless of the care I take of it, it has begun to fall apart; keys have come loose and gone missing, the sound card no longer works without my having to hold headphones a specific way, it overheats, and most irksomely, the screen no longer stays up of its own accord.

Can anybody provide some assistance on how to keep the screen up? I have the other problems under control, for the most part...or will when I get some money. Alas, the life of a student. Unless you want to invest some GREENBACKS to have this issued fixed, you may just want to put something heavy behind it to prop the screen up against it.

However, that may provide to be cumbersome if you're constantly on the move with this thing.

Or you may want to invest a few dollars in a repair manual from the manufacturer and attempt to make the repair yourself to save some money. It depends on how comfortable you are when it comes to computer repair. What about your mobility requirements? Do you need to carry the laptop to classrooms, etc., or can it be left on your desk? If so, and if you could find a cheap used MONITOR, perhaps you could connect it the the laptop and use the external monitor as your primary monitor.

Solve : Video card question?

Answer»

As stated in an earlier post, I have a Gigabyte M57SLI-S4 AM2 NFORCE 570 motherboard and I'm currently running an Nvidia EVGA Geforce 8400 GS 256mb graphics card. I was considering upgrading to a 512mb card, but since my motherboard will allow me to run two of the same card, would it make more sense to have two 256mb cards, or one 512mb one? I know it would be cheaper to buy the 256 one. Also, if I were to add the second 256 card, is it easy to set it up, or should the motherboard just recognize it and use it automatically?I am not 100 % sure but, I thought I just read that this card is not SLI capable.. Double check on that one (can it be hooked up to another 8400gs card) ?? Your motherboard does have the 2 pci-e slots though.....

That card seems a little on the lower end, might consider a higher clocked core speed card. Something PREFERABLY - Memory Clock 500MHz or more*As far as I know it's SLI. Yeah, I know my card ain't that great, but it was what I could afford when I got my new(ish) PC. So what you're saying is it would make more sense to upgrade to a better 512mb card than to buy a 2nd 256 card like I have now? Doesn't Sli require the cards to both be the same?SLI requires that both cards are the same (IE..8400 GS's ) yes but, they don't have to be identical from the same MFG. It would be better I suppose that they were but it can work with different manufacturers cards.

Nothing wrong at all with any video card compared to "most" onboard video ....
If you can save some bling * I would hold on to what you have right now until you can upgrade to a higher clocked card - an example*
The BFG 7600GT < lifetime warranty, very respectable mid-range card which can play just about anything except the new games which are not EVEN available .

...the 7600GT does a great job for under 125.00 us. There are some around 100.00 but I don't think they have lifetime warranties.... Look at the performance specs on a 7300 or 7600 gt... I think you would like those cards and the performance they would give you.
Get rid of the 8400GS, its a joke.

only 2x better than onboard video.

Buy an 8800GTX.Quote from: lil_falco on August 14, 2007, 05:44:01 PM

Is that you Track ? ? ?an 8800GTX is probably a bit out of his price range if he's running a 8400

Solve : Graphics Card Question?

Answer»

It was fine since being installed about a year ago, and then when I had to reinstall the OS, it isn't working since, which is why I thought maybe it was a setting or a WINDOWS issue or something.

Thanks! Ren920In looking at the ATI Radeon trouble shooting site, it tells me to go into device manager and disable the onboard Intel and then install the graphics card. Since it is already installed and the DRIVERS are downloaded, would I just enable it? And, if I TRY that and it doesnt work, and the Intel is disabled, how do I then see my monitor to fix anything?

Sorry to sound stupid, but I kind of am where this is concerned.
Thank you
Ren920I would un-install the drivers/software for the vid card/
Then power down remove all power sources and physically remove the card.
Hook up the monitor to the onboard vid and restart. Do a few more re-boots.
Then re-install the card and after re-booting point it to the appropiate drivers and you should be good to go.Thank you so much, I'm going to try it!
Ren 920OK, here is the result.

I unintalled all the drivers for the video card and physically removed the card form the machine. I connected the monitor to the onboard video and rebooted several times.

I physically reinstalled the card, and then booted up. It did recognize the new HARDWARE, and then I installed the drivers. It said i had to restart to be able to use the program, and when i did, I saw the Dell setup screen and the windows loading, but then I got a black screen. I know I am up because I hear the windows chime and my partner sitting right beside me sees me automatilcally log in to yahoo, etc.

Does this mean

a) the card is not pointed at the driver? ( I did not use the wizard to find the driver file, it would not let me choose the folder, so I just opened it and HIT "install.")
b) the driver is not correct (I got it from the Radeon ATI site for this particular card
or c) my graphics card is bad? (I did get a desktop while the monitor was plugged in to the card port.)

Thanks once again,
Ren920

Do you have the original driver CD that shipped with the card ? ?
If so i would install that one.
To test the card to see if it has failed swap it into another machine...No, I dont have the original CD.

I will try it in another machine.

Thank you.

Solve : How do I get sound surround??

Answer»

I purchased a 5.1 system. How do I tell if I have a 2 or 5 channel system??

Both my computers have on board but 5.1 system has a black jack which only audio cards possess. Big problem is I purchased the speakers for sound surround for movies but not getting it. Do I need to purchase a sound CARD?

Thanks for any help you can all provide.

Yes...

You'll need to purchase a sound card supporting 5.1.

What do you have installed now?SAVIOUR,

Not sure what you MEAN. It's an ASUS motherboard and the speakers are logitech 5.1. All I can really tell you is that it's onboard audio with pink, orange and green jacks but no black which is what I think I need.

I think you answered my question though. I do think I need a card that supports it.

thanx

u instal MPEG2DECODERQuote from: sheshu22 on August 17, 2007, 11:38:22 PM

u instal MPEG2DECODER
Why?Your onboard sound does not support 5.1 Surround, so you will need to purchase a sound card compatible with your system which also supports 5.1.

Go to Creative's website and shop around...or just visit your local Wally World...WalMart for ONE comaptible.

How much do you want to spend on this card?you might not have to... i have the same jack. with integrated sound. my pc will configur the jacks differently like my pink is front small speakers. my orange jack is my rear speakers and mic jack is now my sub woofer. experiment with ur audio settings a little more before you go get a sound card. you might get lucky !
