Solve : Problem with 7900GT?

Answer»

Well a little tube fell of from the 7900GT, it's about 1/4" and it has these numbers on top 621,100,25z. I took it off becuase I was going to do a maintenance on it and INSTALL XP PRO. So now the video card doesn't transfer ANYTHING. What can I do?So you installed XP are you sure it isn't a driver problem?
What OS did you have before?

Jonas Before I had XP home ed. I don't think so because it doesnt read the 7900 GT it reads the 6100 thats onboard. The 7900 turns on and the fan STARTS to rotate but I don't get anything on the monitor. You will NEED to pull the vid card until you are ABLE to repair it and use your onboard graphics in the meantime...

Solve : Comparing Memory Modules?

Answer»

I'm looking to PURCHASE some Corsair Value Ram for a new HTPC build on a ASUS P5B-E mobo. There's 2 memory types available, listed below.

VS2GBKIT533D2 DDR2-533 (PC2-4200) 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) 4-4-4-12-2T 240pin DIMM $84
VS2GBKIT667D2 DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) 5-5-5-15-2T 240pin DIMM $76

Now from the LITTLE bit I understand about memory, 667/5300 is faster than 533/4200, but it is cheaper. It's a similar pricing DIFFERENCE at newegg.com and zipzoomfly. Are the 667/5300 modules faster? I don't know a whole lot about the latencies.
read these and make a decision....

http://pcworld.about.com/magazine/2212p032id118372.htm

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1637776,00.asp (latency)

http://www.buycomputermemory.com/types-of-computer-memory-common-uses.html

either ONE WOULD be fine *Thanks. Since I'm not going to overclock, I'll go with the 5300 and save a few bucks.

Solve : computer won't boot?

Answer»

i'm new to forum. thanks for any help. computer is 4 yr old compaq presarrio. started loosing time about 1 yr ago..didn't know to change battery...9 mos ago started having boot problems..had to TURN on and off several times to GET it to boot..rescently updated windows xp, went to reboot and will not boot. KEYBOARD light up for a split second, hard drive hums and feels like it is spinning. monitor says no signal and nothing harrens...replaced cmos battery, still no boot. have tried every key and combination to get into cmos/bios. no luck. need help please!!
thanksBorrow a power supply of the same wattage or greater and swap it in there and run things overnight...if everything seems OK you need a new PSU...
Don't buy a 20 dollar special or you'll soon be in the same boat.
You can also try another CMOS battery...i have had them DOA brand new CAUSE they sit on the store shelf for years sometimes...A general rule of thumb to go by when purchasing new power supplies is to go by it's weight.

For example, if you buy a 500 watt power supply that weighs 1/2 a pound and a 500 watt power
supply that weighs 3 pounds, you can usually be assured the 3 pound power supply will greatly
outlast the 1/2 pound one.

In most cases, the cheapo junk power supplies don't really weigh anything at all and might only last you
a month or so.The Chinese have figured out this fallicy and are loading their cheapos with LEAD to get away with it...

Solve : Toshiba satellite HDD O/S installation?

Answer»

I bought a new HDD,but my laptop refused to WORK well with it.
I dont know whether swapping it on a desktop computer to format it and install O/S on it.And putting it back into my laptop can work.
I dont know if my laptop will be comfortable with this idea.
Help needed! What is the make and model of the new HDD you are trying to install on your laptop? If the OS you will be installing is any NEWER than WinME then the laptop will not be happy with this method...
Did you recieve a utility CD with this drive ? ?
If so boot the laptop with it in and use it to prepare the HDD for your OS installation...Good point patio...

If it didn't come with a utility cd, then we'll need to know the manufacturer and model of your hard drive so we can make a recommendation to you.The HDD didnt come with any utility CD.
My laptop is TOSHIBA Dynabook satellite 1800 series.
The name of the HDD is 40GB Toshiba HDD(MK4032GAX).From what I have found, Toshiba does not have a hard drive utility for their hard drives, for which I find quite strange...however, you may be able to use IBM's or Maxtor's utility software to properly prepare the drive...unless someone has a better idea.

Solve : video card or not sure?

Answer»

My question is regarding an IBM Aptiva 270, AMD k6-2/400, Windows 98 computer. Anyway, this computer has been sitting up for a couple of years. The onboard video card is an ATI 3D Rage Pro Turbo AGP. I tried starting it up, the lights come on the monitor green, then turns yellow, screen remains black, the keyboard lgts come on for a second, then go out. I replaced the fan and heatsink, because we were always having trouble in the past with it shutting off after getting hot, while my SON played video games. The monitor checks out fine and the keyboard works on another computer. I would like to try and figure out, as cheaply as POSSIBLE, what is going on. I have been told I should change out the on board video card to another ONE. If I do, what video card would work for this computer without me spending too much money, since this a trial and error thing. Could there be another problem I haven't thought of, that might help? I bought an AMD K6-2/500 processor. That did not help, so I switched back. My son says to throw it away, but I really like trying to fix things if I can. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks....greenleaves I'd swap out the PSU with a known working one as a test.

This note is regarding my Ibm aptiva 270, AMD k6-2/400, windows 98. The monitor comes on but the light turns from green to yellow and the keyboard lights up and then goes out. I did as you suggested and checked out the PSU with a multimeter and it seems to be putting out the CORRECT volts based on what I was able to get off the internet. I checked all the plugs coming from the PSU with it turned on. I had some help from my son. He knows some about eletronics. What I would like to try now is replace the onboard video card with something similar. It is an ATI rage pro turbo 3D video card. I have looked at some on the internet but it is so comfusing as to what I should get that would work with my computer. My son used to play games on this computer all the time and it always ran hot and was always shutting off on him at times. That's probably why we replaced it with another one. I am going to be the only one using it now. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Greenleaves

Solve : motherboard integrated video card?

Answer»

I'm kinda a computer idiot, so PLEASE forgive me. I WAKE up one morning to check my e-mail and my monitor will not come on, computer is going throught the process of starting up, but the monitor doesnt work, so I hook up an old monitor and it doesnt work either. I am guessing it is the video card, but it is INTEGRATED w/ motherboard. Is there any way to fix this?

How about some specifics on the computer? See below.sorry, it is an athlon 1700+/a70ft. with windows xp. other than that I dont really know anythingTry adding a known working vid card in that machine...
I would suggest borrowing one in case that machine has other issues.

In the meantime DLoad and RUN Everest Home and post the results here...this will tell you more than you NEED to know about that machine. There really is no excuse to not know details about your machine, especially when seeking help. Solve : Formatted Computer, boot issues, i really need some help?

Answer»

Well now, remember you're asking someone who knows nothing about puters. They request of you to "share your desk top" through a DEVICE called "Easy Assist". I did see him go into the partitions PAGE. It was just a matter of clicks so I have no idea what he did. As for thr back up of info...I was asked if I had everything I wanted to save backed up, but AOL BACKS and stores "Saved on AOL Mail" and "Favorites", anything ELSE was easily replaced as I don't do a lot of work in Word or whatever. And I had DISCS for WXP and 9.0VR.

Solve : info on Epson Perfection 4490 Photo scanner?

Answer»

HI, I have above named scanner; it works good (although a bit slow)--I'm happy with it.
I would LIKE to know how to contact Epson about extending the negative film FUNCTION. I need to scan some odd sized negatives but the scanning firmware (I guess) it just set up for the frames supplied with the scanner--not large enough for an old 4" x 6" negative.
I have tried many things to get it to scan this size, even made up a black sheet with the 4 x 6 hole cut in it to fit the negative, but of course it will only scan the dimensions that the program offers, and maintains a certain aspect ratio that screws things up!
I suspect that it is PROBABLY impossible but it's worth a try.

Solve : Screen problem or something more serious??

Answer»

My laptop works fine for a few minutes but then it suddenly stops responding and the screen becomes corrupted.

The screen dissolves into a pattern of blurred vertical lines which look like wrinkles in cloth. These wrinkles are usually coloured green but sometimes fade to grey or purple. Sometimes the whole screen fades to black or white and then the wrinkles reappear. At the same time, horizontal lines keep appearing and advancing jerkily down the screen in front of the wrinkles.

After I[ch8217]ve turned the laptop off, it refuses to boot for a while. When I press the power button, the fan whirrs and the hard drive LED lights up, but the screen doesn[ch8217]t come on and the hard drive makes no noise, which suggests that it isn[ch8217]t actually working.

When the computer does eventually boot up, it works fine for a few minutes but then the screen goes crazy and the cycle begins again. The period for which it works before becoming corrupted decreases every time.

I[ch8217]ve tried reseating the monitor cable where it attaches to the motherboard, but this hasn[ch8217]t worked. I[ch8217]ve also tried hooking up the laptop to ANOTHER monitor: when the laptop screen became corrupted, the other monitor went blank (i.e. power LED flashing but screen entirely blank as if receiving no signal).

On the face of it, this looks like a monitor problem, but why should the computer stop responding to commands when the screen gets corrupted, and why does the computer refuse to reboot for a while after it[ch8217]s happened?

Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Hewlett Packard Pavilion zt1171, purchased 2002
Intel Mobile Pentium III-M 1.06GHz
Seagate Momentus 40GB HD422 (new in June)
Transcend 512MB SDRAM (new in September)

Windows XP Home
Microsoft Works Suite 2002 Try reducing the screen resolution and make sure that both monitors are CAPABLE of displaying the resolution AND refresh rates selected. Thanks for your replies.

Before all this happened, I had made no changes to my system (e.g. installing new hardware / software) and done nothing out of the ordinary. A few days ago the laptop wouldn[ch8217]t restart from standby and exhibited the symptoms described above (+fan; +HD light; -screen; -HD noise). After a few unsuccessful tries, it booted up as if nothing had happened: there was no error message, nothing untoward in the event log, and a virus scan returned a clean bill of health. It worked fine for a day or so and then the screen badness started and it[ch8217]s been the same since.

Exactly the same problem recurs in safe mode. Both monitors capable of relevant resolution & refresh rate.

I[ch8217]ve just tried disconnecting the laptop screen altogether, attaching the other monitor, then starting up the laptop. The same thing happened again: a few minutes[ch8217] perfect functioning then the monitor went blank as if it was receiving no signal. At the same time, the HD light went out on the laptop and the HD STOPPED chunnering [ch8211] this almost always happens when the screen becomes corrupted.

I[ch8217]ve previously had some [ch8216]contact creep[ch8217] problems with this computer: heat causes some of the connections to become loose (this usually affects the keyboard and is cured by reseating the ribbon cable). With this in mind, I[ch8217]ve RESEATED everything I can get my hands on (HD, RAM, processor, cables), but this hasn[ch8217]t rectified the problem. I[ch8217]ve also tried substituting an alternative RAM chip to no avail.

As before, all comments greatly appreciated. You can be about 90% certain that this a hardware problem, and that it is heat related. The fact that it works cold but not hot generally points to one of three things. 1. A defective component 2. A bad connection 3. A cold solder joint or cracked trace on the MB. Another thing, if you are running on AC power, a defective power adapter that is overheating can cause many problems. Have you tried running on battery only to see if problem persists?I think the motherboard is heading south.

Solve : Adding Video card?

Answer»

I have an older computer with Windows 98 on it. Can I add a video card that supports dual monitors?Yes, just make sure the card has 2 # dvi or vga connectors*

Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows 2000 and Windows Xp all support Dual monitors.

Win 98 supports a max of 9And, if you now have an AGP card installed that you would like to continue using, you could install a PCI video card for the second monitor. If you do this, I suggest you GET a PCI card with a graphics CHIP from the same manufacturer as the one on the AGP card. In other words, make them both ATI or both nVidia. They can be mixed but keeping them the same can just help avoid driver CONFLICTS. Don't need to be the same exact chip, just the same manufacturer. For example, I have an AGP (nVidia GeForce FX 5200) combined with a PCI (nVidia GeForce4 MX440). They use the same driver. If it's an older macjhine with Win98 chances are the slots aren't AGP...PCI most likely.

Solve : Computer Crashing in some of the newer games?

Answer»

Alright i recently picked up a new VIDEO card and have been trying out some of the games out there and i seem to be having problems with some games but not others but the problem is always the same.
Ill be running the game for about 10minutes and then it will crash and i will get "No Signal" from my monitor and be forced to restart. Games I'm able to play with no issues are Oblivion, Hellgate: London, and Wow. While i get these crashes on STRANGLEHOLD, Tabula Rasa, and Jericho. Wondering if anyone had any idea what could be causing these crashes here are my comp specs. I do have the updated DRIVERS for just about everything i know of.

Windows XP home
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+
Memory: 2GB DDR ram
Video Card: ATI Radeon X1950XT

The only things i can think of are maybe my power supply is having trouble handling the new card? or it might be an issue with the ram since its the old DDR and not DDR2? I have trouble believing either of these on one hand because it handles oblivion and HLG with no problems. Anyone know if these are even a possiblity or have any other tips or help that'd be appreciated.the other games working great?
then i will predict it's your video card can't support that game, could be too heavy for it, what psu you have?

is this a desktop or laptop we're talking about?

have you checked your fans? perhaps your pc is overheating...I would say faultly video card... Since we're all guessing i'll bet on heat...
With a side bet on the PSU.Turns out it was in fact my PSU i went ahead and finally took a look at it and t was only a 300W PSU and according to the book that came with my video card it suggested 450W+ so after buying a new PSU today everything seems to work great thanks for the ADVICE

Solve : PC powers down?

Answer»

i have a computer running win xp sp2 that sometimes just shuts down completely. i have unplug power cord and reboot. other times it boots up and runs allday with no problems. i have ran virus SCANS,etc, but nothing jumps out. i was wondering if anyone has had this problem and what fixed it? Make sure your memory is properly seated. You can also run a memory test and see if one of your memory modules is bad. Do you notice any particular time it shuts down? (like only when your playing games or running certain applications)How old is your computer? Do you know what psu you have? ......... aka brand Quote from: beanhead07 on August 07, 2007, 06:50:09 AM

going on what beanhead SAID ......Also there is a slight chance it could be your memory , take a test at http://www.memtest.org/ to make sure there are no errors , if we SUSPECT they are we Will come back top that later , also if your happy with removing the side panel of your computer you can take a look and double check to make sure you memory has been inserted correctly and hasn't some how slipped out * WILD THEORY I KNOW :d*HAHA thanks Tony I've actually worked on a computer that the memory had come halfway out before.... so it has happened. lol! but check your PSU first like Tony said. If you've got a spare try swapping it out and see if it STILL has the same problem. i will try these and reply back, thanksI actually have this exact same problem and am also looking for a solution. I'm running Vista, with a new Coolmax psu, a new bioware mobo, new buffalo ram and a new AMD processor. My situation is the same though. It will just off at random and the only way to turn it back on is to unplug the psu and plug it back in. At times it will stay on for hours/days, others for less than a minute. I'm getting ready to run the memory test that was suggested, but I haven't really figured anything out yet. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Solve : HP OmniBook Xe3-gc Won't turn on but will lpay cd's?

Answer»

I recently inherited a BROKEN OmniBook Xe3-gc Mo. # F3776WT. When you press the power button the lights on the keyboard flash and the battery light comes on (when it's plugged in). There is some noise from the cd drive but the screen stays blank and it stops making noise. We tried plugging another monitor to it and it did the same thing and the monitor light stayed yellow. Not sure what 2 do next?!?! Any help would be appriciated!!!!Well, you said it...

Quote

I recently inherited a broken OmniBook

1. Take it to a repair shop
2. Get estimate of repair costs.
3. If cost not too great, tell shop to go ahead.
4. If cost too great, throw busted Omnibook in trash.
I guess sometimes the truth hurts lolMostly when it comes to laptops...they're like BIC lighters...when they break you replace them.
I'll probably get jumped on by laptop repair afficianadoes but i just won't work on them.

Don't get me wrong i've done it dozens of times in the past but it's just not worth the time and effort involved...Quote from: patio on October 03, 2007, 02:04:09 PM

Agreed! I don't like them! I know MANY people think they are better than desktops, but you pay more for less capability, often just as a lifestyle accessory toy to show off in front of people, they can get easily stolen, damaged, dropped, SOAKED, etc, the makers and their agents often cease stocking the incredibly expensive non-standard spares after only a few MONTHS sometimes, I could go on...

One of the major problems I've come across when dealing with customer laptops is that the power port often breaks where the plug goes into the laptop.

If that happens the battery will never charge.

You might have a dead battery.

If this is the case you might need another mother board for the laptop UNLESS the power jack can be soldered back in place onto the motherboard
so it doesn't wiggle or feel loose anymore. That's usually the easiest fix. But depending on the laptop, it may or may not be cheaper to replace
the mother board or just buy a whole new laptop.

Solve : HP d125xi "scanner failure"?

Answer»

Just bought this used and I have tried the following steps to try and diagnose this problem. If anyone has any ideas please let me know what else I can try? I have the tools to TEST sensors or electrical devices also. I have not yet pulled the entire machine apart to look at all boards to check for burns and blowouts, sounds like a hardware problem to me. I was able to perform a "scan to" function once when initially HOOKED up to PC and it worked flawlessly, now it just keeps getting the "scanner failure" error. I am able to print only in black ink while the error is blinking(new cartridges, but not able to align or clean printheads while flashing error, it appears before it finishes tasks). Any suggestions would be a great help.

1: Performed semi and full reset in wall socket and on power bar, multiple times.
2: Used hair dryer on light bulbs while powering on (yes lights are on and it is 70-90 degrees ambient anyways).
3:Removed plastic cover from above MIRRORS (mirrors appear to be clean, no film noticed on front or REAR mirror, not seen any other mirrors)
3: Has new ink cartridges, but will not print color, only black. (DONT see how this will affect the scanner problem, probably printer heads are dirty/dried, will soak them after I find scanner error problem), have tried cleaning printheads or aligning them and get error before they can finsh.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for reading
So what exactly is it doing or not doing correctly?

Solve : diskette drive 1 seek failure?

Answer»

Can anybody help me? WHen I turn on my computer I get nothing but a message saying....DISKETTE DRIVE 1 SEEK FAILURE
NO BOOT DEVICE AVAILABLE
STRIKE F1 TO RETRY BOOT, F2 FOR SETUP UTILITY
I've tried everything I KNOW I need HELP!!!!!
running window xp Is/was there a floppy in the drive ? ?

If so remove it power down and startup again.(1) Make sure there's no floppydisk in the drive.
Also check the cables to your floppydrive and check the BIOS settings.

(2) Try unplugging any usb items and see if it still hangs

(3) Press "Del" at startup, as soon as it lists the hard drives etc. (sometimes F9-F12)
The key('s) are displayed on the screen.

Then it looks for a primary boot device and make sure the HD-0 or HD-1 or C: or HD is the first primary boot device in the boot sequence.

Revised*
make sure the HD-0 or HD-1 or C: or HD is the first primary boot device in the boot sequence.

get into your bios and change the boot-sequence* go- CD/DVD (1st) / Hard drive (2ND)

Theres no floppy drive in fact its not hooked up. Went down about a year ago and havent been able to get a new one yet. no usb's hooked up either. still giving same messageMake sure you have no disks in your floppy drive. Otherwise your hard drive needs to be turned on in your bios I think.

Solve : reading drive on laptop?

Answer»

My laptop has died and I've decided not to fix it. It is not the hard drive, but some other card. Anyway, I was wondering if I could take the hard drive and hook it up to another computer in order to get some items off the drive?

If I can do this, how do I do it?

thanks
Judy
Welcome to the CH forums Judy.

You can hook up your laptop hard drive to a desktop IDE connector using the adapter you will see here. Cost is about ten dollars.

Good luckJust want to confirm that this is the only way to do it?

I do not have access to a desktop that I can open up to install anything. I was hoping there may be a "sleeve" or something that I could insert the hard drive itself into and then plug into another computer, either desk or laptop.

Anything like that? Or am I just out of luck?

thanks in advance.

Then look around there some more, for others. That was just the first one I came to.

Wait for Dusty, or someone else with experience with them before you spend your MONEY. I just saw that it had been a while SINCE you'd gotten a response and wanted to give you something to think about.

The first SUGGESTION is the best...i have had bad times with data recovery using USB ports but if that's the only alternative go for it...
You don't know anyone else with a desktop system ? ?
It takes about 10 minutes tops to hook it up using the first method...

Solve : Question about motherboards & hard drives?

Answer»

I don't know much about this stuff so please bear with me...

I'm interested in updating my cpu and memory, but I have a pretty old motherboard. The upgrade I'd like to make I'm pretty sure would require me to get a new motherboard since my current one doesn't have a LGA 775 socket.

So my question is if I were to put in a new motherboard, would my hard drive need to be reformatted before the hard drive would work?

I'm basically not wanting to lose all the data on my hard drive, but I have a feeling I don't have a choice (aside from moving it all somewhere else first). Am i right about that?

In a NUTSHELL, if I install everything (motherboard/cpu/ddr2) and just turn on my computer, is my hard drive going to have no idea what to do and essentially do nothing and not start up?
You'll definitely not be able to boot from that hard drive if you change the motherboard...however, you could add another hard drive...install the new operating sytem on the new hard drive and SLAVE the old one so the information on that drive would be readily available.

It's really not that difficult to do...and if you need help with it...give us a shout...Thanks for the quick reply!

I will probably try to do that. You're welcome...

LET us know how it goes...okay?I'm working with a pretty tight space inside this case. I honestly don't know if I can fit 2 hard drives in there. Can I use a new external hard drive as the master and set the internal one that's already in there to slave? While you can certainly do what you've suggested...you may want to rethink it.

Personally...this is what I would recommend...

While you can't just use the same drive, attached to your current motherboard, on a new motherboard...unless, of course, that new motherboard is EXACTLY the same motherboard (as the old one) configured the same...same jumper settings...same BIOS, etc., etc...highly unlikely, though...

Your best bet would be to use a new hard drive installed with the new motherboard...partitioned...formatted.. .and setup with the OS of your choosing (as long as it's supported) and jumpered as "Master"...the old drive I'd "Slave". I'd then copy anything I needed from the old drive to the new. That's just me...and I usually stick to my guns...but you may hear DIFFERENT from other users within this forum.

I, too have an external drive, but do not use it as a boot device. I use it as a backup device...files, programs, folders, etc.

My posts tend to get a little long and winded so please bear with me...

Since it is your intention to replace the motherboard...you're better off with the above recommendation...however...you may want to wait to see what others may say...Yeah I just wasn't sure if because it would be a external usb drive that it would be weird to use it as a boot device.

Solve : Booting up problem.?

Answer»

Hi, I'm having trouble with my laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000).

When I turn it on, |I'm getting the error message

"No boot sectors on internal hard drive. No bootable sectors".

The hard drive is being recognised.

Any ideas?I'm no great expert on this, but I'll do what I can SINCE no-one has ANSWERED so far.

1. Go into the BIOS SETUP and check that the HDD is being seen by the BIOS and correctly identified
Also make sure that all your drives are set to "Auto" detect.

2. Would be a good idea to RUN the HDD manufacturers diagnostic utility to test th HDD to see if it's healthy.

3. Which Windows version is installed?

4. Use fdisk to look at the partitioning. See if it looks OK and whether the 1st Primary Partition [the C: partition with Windows on it] is SET AS ACTIVE.
Set it active if it isn't.

5. That should do for now, but the next step would be to RESTORE the MBR..
AND/OR...

6. Make an NT/2000/XP boot floppy and use that to attempt to load Windows

Solve : "No Audio Device"?

Answer»

hello,
I will like to firstly note that I know next to nothing about computers. I recently got a second hand computer off my brother. Now the problem I seem to be having is that I am not getting any sound from the speakers at all.

I have gone to control panel> sounds and audio DEVICES and there it says "no audio devices"

And in the Device Manager the only things LISTED under sound, video and game controllers is
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

I am running a HP Pavillion m7369a Media Center PC
Intel Pentiunm 4 Processor 524
NVIDIA GeFORCE 7300LE

Umm, I don't know anything else. I would really appreciate any help on this. I would love to have sound on this device. I must also note that I do not have any of the recovery cds.

Thank you all in Advance What OPERATING system are you running on it? Windows XP or Vista?

Since you said second hand computer, I will assume XP. If that is true:

Download this DRIVER from the HP website and install it. The instructions
are on this page as well as the audio driver download.

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-39525-1&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=1845085&os=228&lang=en

If the problem lies not within the drivers and this does not fix your sound issue, let me know.THANK YOU SO MUCH!:)

You are a star!

That did help. You have no idea how happy I was to hear the windows start up sounds

Thank you

Solve : Do I need a new Motherboard??

Answer»

Yesterday my husband and I were cleaning the fans in our computer, including the CPU fan. Now when I try to start up the computer all the fans run and the cd-rom drive works but there is no picture on the MONITOR. I tried a different monitor and I reseated the video CARD and RAM. The monitor is still blank.
So I am wondering if my husband may have done something to the MOBO while putting the fan back in? Are there any other possibilities I can test before I resort to buying a new MOBO?

Thanks for your help!Quote from: melissalynne7 on August 13, 2007, 02:15:36 PM

So I am wondering if my husband may have done something to the MOBO while putting the fan back in?
So, the CPU fan and heatsink were removed from the processor?yes, and I'm afraid that maybe the motherboard was damaged when the fan was put back inAre there more than one connector for the monitor on the back of the machine ? ?
If so power down and hook up to the other one...Quote from: melissalynne7 on August 13, 2007, 03:24:47 PM
yes, and I'm afraid that maybe the motherboard was damaged when the fan was put back in
Or, the processor could have been damaged. Was thermal paste applied to the processor before re-mounting the heatsink on the CPU?I hooked up the monitor using the other port, still no picture.

No, thermal paste was not applied.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
MelissaI took the heat sink off again to see if I could find any problems. Two of the little prongs are bent and I cannot straighten them. I took the heat sink off again to see if I could find any problems. Two of the little prongs are bent and I cannot straighten them. Could this be the source of my problem?
It sure could. And, if you can't straighten them, you've got a ruined processor. Even if you can straighten them, it may not work. Here's a reference: Installing a CPU and Heatsink, or Installing Memory, CPU and Heatsink . And, regarding the bent pins:
Bent CPU Pins and How to Fix Bent Pins on a CPU. And a reminder, a proper application of thermal paste between a CPU and heatsink is necessary to prevent overheating, i.e. heat damage, of a CPU.Quote from: melissalynne7 on August 13, 2007, 04:39:20 PM

Solve : Nothing on Screen?

Answer»

Hi Guys
I just moved house and my computer was working fine when I turned it off before I moved, and when I got to my new house I turned it on and the LCD screen wont display anything. The computer was packed in the original box and Im not sure how it was handled as the removalists can never be trusted. I have test the screen on another computer and it works fine. When I turn the computer on, the light on the power button of the screen goes from green to orange where normally it stays green. I have checked that all cables are connected inside the computer and also video card and ram and evrything is connected fine. I also tried using the Plug on the motherboard instead of the video card and still nothing. I am assuming it is the motherboard but it is reasonably new, so Im not sure.
Any ideas? any checks I can do?
Thanks in advance for your helpdoes it beep or anything

if not try using different ramdavey, does the computer appear to startup? I.e. can you hear the hdd and fans spinning up?

Does the computer make any beeping noises?Quote from: seanbond on August 12, 2007, 08:47:51 AM

does it beep or anything

if not try using different ram

Please refrain from GIVING this advice to people with very different problems.

patio.YES, the computer turns on, it BEEPS, the lights come on, the fans spin and the cd drive lights flash and open fine. I asssume its not the graphics card because the on board graphics port on the motherboard doesnt work either??? You could try removing the vid card and re-seating it...make sure all fans are operating properly.I have removed the video card and reseated it, removed the ram modules and reseated them, still nothingYou may have to reset the bios to the defaults to be able to use the onboard video, if you can't access your bios by hitting Del continuously at start up the try removing the cmos battery for a while to reset it.
Edit 1: Don't forget to plug your video cable into the onboard video port.
Edit 2: It may also be a problem with your monitor can you try a different one out?thanks I tried that, Yes I tried another monitor and still nothing, but both the monitors work on another computer so it cant be that. I tried hitting delete on startup but nothing comes up on the monitor so i dont know whether it went into bios or not. It just says no signal on the screen, but both monitors work on another computer with the same cables so its got to be inside the computerUnplug from the mains power, this will allow your PSU to reset if it has latched out.
Remove the cmos battery for 10 minutes.
Plug your video cable into the onboard video port.
Refit your cmos battery.
Plug back into your mains power.
Push the 'go' button on the front.... what happens?

PS, check that your PSU is set to the voltage appropriate to your area. Thanks Fed, I just tried that and it is still the same...nothing on the screen. The power supply is set correctly. It sounds as tho the hard drives arnt doing there normal thing, like they are turning on and spinning but they are not doing the normal clicking type noises that happens when the PC is turned on. Does the motherboard control them? I just had a problem similar to this - i also jsut moved and on my other computer im still having problems but a differnet one. at first it was working fine in my old house and whatever - then we moved and it woulnd't display anything exept for input invalid or... no it was input not support - i fixed this by just BUYING a new graphics card -.- ... now my problem is NO INTERNET..... please check my post about internet in this forum labled "please help!" thank you.Clicking noises from your HD is not a good sign so you should try and test it with bootable software from the manufacturer's website.
You should also test your ram with a bootable floppy, download the software from memtest.

Either way you should still see a post screen flash up at bootup so it may well be your PSU going South. Do you have access to one you can try as a test?

Without making any changes from my previous post you could remove the other video card just in case your bios is the AUTO detect type.

Solve : Machine freezes instantly?

Answer»

Hello friends,
I am using an Intel Celeron System with Intel 845GVSR MOBO.There is 256 MB RAM(128x2).My OS is Windows XP.My Keyboard is PS/2 and mouse is USB.One day by mistake I CONNECTED the Keyboard to the PS/2 PORT for mouse and the system didn't boot up.I realized this after a number of futile attempts to restart and once I knew this connected the KB to the correct port. But thereafter the machine failed to work properly.
I tried with CMOS settings, replacing the SMPS,re-seating the RAM sticks, replacing the MOBO with a same made and at one time the system got working. But the present problem is that it will go to a standstill amidst of working ,with the monitor displaying what it was (and sometimes a black screen) and with the keyboard and mouse not responding. The HDD and power LED will be on then.
The even strange thing is that at this stage the restart button is not functioning,I have to power-off the system manually and after a lot of power on and off it will work correctly for some time. And then the freezing. The Samsung monitor (CRT)is working correctly when tested with another system. While restarting after this freezing the power LED of the monitor will be blinking green as if no signal is there.

Please help me.........I am in pity after this much replacements and the sustaining problem!Borrow a PS2 mouse and try it with that...dis-connect any USB devices not being used.I am having a similiar problem. I haven't gotten it fixed yet. Sorry for not being any help lol.Thank you.....
I tried the PS/2 mouse but no improvement. Now,if I am removing the CMOS cell and switch-on after inserting the cell, the machine shows a message such as 'memory error' and a prompt to enter CMOS Setup by pressing F4.After saving the CMOS SET up the machine will work perfectly but for a short time.
Any suggestions?I just got my problem resolved and I'll tell you the solution though it may have nothing to do with yours but is worth checking.

Mine was overheating which I knew, but I did not know why. Well, a clip on the heatsink over the cpu broke and it was lose and not doing its job. So I could have either ordered a new clip, but thats not what I did do. my grandpa fixed it with a piece of plastic that was gonna be thrown away. He like ATTACHED it to the broken part and now it works fine. It is awesome. I'm amazed my grandpa did it as he is 82.

Everytime I boot my computer I always get an error message 'FAN fail or speed to low', I got into the bios and I notice the CPU fan is working at about 6,000rpm but the CHIP fan is at 0rpm. Basically it's telling me it's not working at all. I took the case off and the 4 fans I can see all seem to be working.
There may be another one but I can't see it. Im an overclocker so I was wondering If i'd PUSHED it too far? Please give me your thoughts.

Also by taking the case off the SIDE while having the computer RUNNING, will this make the system run cooler?

Solve : no boot, no post, but power ok?

Answer»

hi my dads computer refuses to start up after someone blew the house fuses with the toaster. its surge protected as well.
specs.
gigabyte 7vaxp ultra
amd athlon 2500
2x 512mb 333
radoen 9500 pro 128mb

i have taken everything off apart from the above, replaced the battery for bios, cleaned everything spotlessly. cant see any blown capacitors anywhere, checked ram individually
the power seems ok as system turns on all fans, lights, (ram lights orange not sure if it should be green). no beeps nothing when turned on, runs for about 5min then shuts off. when hdd and dvd drives connected they span up ok.

question is have we fried something and how to test which bit it is, dont have access to other parts as they either dont fit this motherboard or are laptops. dont want to just buy each bit new till i find out which ones bust as i would rather upgrade it all instead of having 2 systems that are a few years OLD Some damage may have been done to the cpu or the graphics card, can you see any thing on the SCREEN at booting?
any Bios data such as drives ram or even any windows start up showing on the screen ?

I am sorry to say this but most surge protection gadgets work once and once only, and OFTEN that surge is the one which is not noticed, the thermal fuse/capacitor/resistor/thermal diode/ blows and after that its is only an extension SOCKET. The more expensive over £100 ones often can be reset and retested, they work very well but any of them can not really be trusted unless there is a method of checking/testing it is reliable.
a few years ago we used to tie a few knots in the power cable or even added a few ferrite rings into the knots , the phone, and the network cable then the power surge burnt out at the knot , we then only replaced the power cable and tied the knots in the new one again, I cannot recommend you do this and I am not recommending you do this of course.
If you're not getting a POST (beeps), then you may have either:
1. a power supply that is defective/blown and took the motherboard with it
2. a defective/blown motherboard

Have you disconnected EVERYTHING / hard drives, cdrom drives, etc. and tried booting with nothing but the RAM, CPU & video?

Alan <>< hi, yes i get nothing on the screen at all, and everything apart from ram, cpu and graphics.
psu works as disk drives worked when connected.
have been looking for replacement parts this evening and it may work out cheaper to upgrade it all than find something that fits the motherboard or new motherboard with the right connectors that i need for drives/sound etc. its so daft as i was happy with the performance"...psu works as disk drives worked when connected...."

Just because the drives power up doesn't mean the power supply is good, only that some power is getting to the drives.

Try a power supply first as it is much less expensive that the rest of that stuff.

Alan <>< Its your power supply, thats allin simple terms the power supply unit has a variety of rails which provide at least three voltages 3v,5v,12v if any are damaged then the motherboard cannot startup , bits of the supply may still provide a short supply then cut out.

a good start wood be to replace the power Supply Unit with a good branded unit, I would not recomend any cheep and nasty as they can cause more damage, and make sure that all the correct and up to date specification connectors are fitted for crossfire etc as they usualy are made with a sfe system it stops before it damages any computersQuote from: deep on September 24, 2007, 03:46:34 PM

Its your power supply, thats all

Stop it.

I tend to agree with Alan on this one...
The first culprit would obviously be the PSU...but instead of just buying one see if you can borrow a known working one of the same or greater wattage and swap it in there for at least a day to test...run the machine thru all it's paces and if it's FINE then by all means replace it.
Another thing to check would be the modem...even a small spike will usually take thes out of commision so remove and or dis-connect it and see if the machine behaves.

Let us know...just to let you all know and thanks for suggestions but the computer has died a death. tried new psu, ram, videocard, chip and motherboard. no luck so new internals for meA total Death ? ?
Although rare it does happen...
As is customary here there will be the 3 days of mourning followed by the official ceremony.
Sorry about the loss and thanx for letting us know.

p.s. Have the RAM, vid card and maybe even the CPU tested in another system...there may be some salvageable units there.

Solve : IDE / SATA?

Answer»

I'm buying a new COMPUTER and the HDD will be SATA. I have an old IDE HDD from my old computer and I wanted to use it in my new machine as a slave like it was in my old one. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to do this. I heard there is a device you can HOOK up via usb and the IDE HDD would go inside of that. I haven't been ABLE to find one though. Any ideas? Thanks. The thing your talking about is a hard drive enclosure... you can buy them from most pc hardware component shops.

You could buy one of these, which will connect to your computer via USB or firewire depending on the enclosure you buy and make the HDD an external storage drive.

Or you could just slave the drive and plug it in via IDE in your new computer (are you buying a package or custom building?) as most (I have not came across one which doesn't have... yet...) motherboards have at least 1 IDE channel.I'm buying a PRE built. It's going to get me through while I build one then it will be my spare. I guess I'll wait until I receive the pc and look into using the IDE on the mobo. So that would be fine? It will see both types off HDD's? Well worst come to worst I'll buy one of those hard drive enclosures. Thanks.Yeah it should see both of the HD's without a fuss.

Post back if you run into any PROBLEMS Or there is no need for an enclosure...if the machine is shipped with a SATA drive it doesn't mean you cannot run an IDE drive.
Just hook it up internally and it will run fine.

Solve : Nvidia to launch sub-$100 GeForce 8400?

Answer»

According to a report by ExtremeTech.com, Nvidia plans to LAUNCH a CHEAP version of its GeForce 8-series graphics card in an effort to further gain market share in the discrete desktop graphics market, which it currently controls. The GeForce 8400 would reportedly come in two versions, one with 256MB of frame buffer memory, and the other with 128MB, priced at $79.99 and $49.99 for the cheapest Direct X 10 compatibility possible.

Features of the card were not available, although sources said their information indicated that the cards would be clocked at 450 MHz with a 400-MHz memory clock. HDCP support should be included, although the cards will probably lack HDMI as a cost-saving feature, they said. It was not known whether the cards will be SLI-enabled.
Nvidia already has a sub-$100 DirectX 10 card out in the market, the GeForce 8500XT with 256MB of frame buffer RAM is priced at $99; however, with Nvidia pushing down its budget card prices, more than one will be tempted to grab one for some DX10 gaming goodness, EVEN if they don’t run as smoothly as high-END cards in all the latest games.

http://www.techspot.com/news/25657-nvidia-to-launch-sub100-geforce-8400.htmlNot too SHABBY. Thanks for the info, Scott. For the most part useless now*, it's nice to see a company bring a (DX10) card to the market for under 100.00 ...... I saw a few of these the other day, they don't look too bad.
Nice benchmark scores for a budget card, could be a nice choice for people with not much cash that want DX10.This is a great step in the right direction. Normally if you want the latest and greatest features you have to break the bank. I run a 8800 GTS in my main system but I would love to run something like this in the media center or my wifes computer. Its an 8500 GT with a 64-bit memory bus.

Not very exciting. If u want a budget card, u would buy a DX9.0 one.Deep breathing Deep breathing........$100 , ok so i go out and spend £100 on mine only to see lol that there was a better one for the chepaer price .......

ok IVE tried the intergated perhip.... Its still not working. But when I went into that section I took a note of things that can be enabled/disabled and heres the list of them.

Enhance ATAPI Performance
ONBOARD legacy audio
Soundblaster
MPU- 401
FM Port
Game Port

Im pretty sure the only one thats enabled is Onboard legacy audio, The rest are disabled. Cheers Ahhh I think im gonna give up from now, I might just buy a new computer next year lol. More and more things are GOING wrong with it everday so I think its a lost cause. Thanks for everyones help I appreciate it greatly! Visit the manuf. site and see if there are Win98 MBoard drivers for that machine.
USB was relatively new to Win98 and you MAY be out of luck...I FINALLY DID IT! I had to update my amibios. I found it after i had to goto american megatreds, downloaded a utility that scans ur motherboard build tag and then once i had that i got onto this really great site that has a download for the update and then load optimized defaults in the bios. Iam so STOKED right about now.... Thank u to all that helped me. It made me think and yeah now I have the universal bus controllers section and everything works! Thats so *censored* awesome. This is an awesome forum too i might as well add, its a great service
Thank u to all and to all a goodnight!

Solve : No sound after opening my pc?

Answer»

Hi,

So I opened my pc up a few days ago to CLEAN it and ever since then theres been no sound, im guessing I must have knocked something out of place, ive since tried making sure that everything is plugged in properly (albeit not knowing what any of it does) and still nothing, as far as I know this is 100% a hardware problem, ive updated my drivers and used different speakers and still nothing.

So if I was going to try and fix it myself, what would I have to try to look for?

SYSTEM specs:

Radeon 9200 all in wonder
Amd athlon 1700
1024mb ram
N-vidia n-force audio
Xp sp 2 running ad-aware, comodo, spybot and windows cleaner constantly.

thanks alot.is your sound onboard, meaning, is the sound plug on your motherboard? or is it a discrete sound card in one of the pci slots? if it's a sound card, check to make sure it's seated properly in the slot.Hi, thanks for the reply, you plug the speakers into this yellow box which is (I think) connected to the mother board. I fiddled around with it a bit and it was sturdy.

hmm...that actually LOOKS like some type of serial or game port...but that seems like a newer mobo so it probably isn't one of those...

also, there is a capacitor in that picture that is partially covered by your thumb. from the angle you took the picture it looks like the top of it is slightly rounded...

check all of your capacitors on your motherboard. they're the little tin-can looking things. they should be flat on the top, if they're rounded, or completely burst open and leaking FLUID, your motherboard is bad. look for that and check back.Checked them all and they seem fine, a few of them are a bit wobbly but I guess thats because of the height of them.

I did find the nvidia logo on my mother board though, its near where the yellow circle is now, I usually plug my speakers into the jack at the top of my pc and the wires from that end near the logo.

Just say if you need any PICTURES

http://img117.imageshack.us/img117/5597/spa0179uu3.jpgI completely reformated my pc so its definetely a hardware problem, im guessing something is out of place but I cant put my finger on what.I don't know of any sound hookups that are inside the case...do you mean the PC speaker perhaps ? ?
This won't play sounds other than MBoard warning beeps by the way.

Solve : Sound only coming from one speaker?

Answer»

Okey doke, I bought Dark Messiah: of Might and Magic earlier TODAY, came home, then installed it. I went out to eat then came back and decided to play it. I watched the opening cutscene and my SOUND was fine, but before i could start a new game one of my friends called and wanted me to hang out with them so I did. When I came home I opened iTunes, played a song, and noticed that sound was only coming out of my left speaker. I checked to make sure I had it balanced out on the master volume, and after that I plugged in a headset and GOT the same problem. After that I plugged in my iPod and both speakers worked fine. Any help would be much APPRECIATED =)Can anyone please SHED some light on this please ?

Solve : Sound quit working?

Answer»

I was trying to get my SAMSUNG vid camcorder to play through my pc when all of a sudden my sound goes dead.
I had the cam plugged into my pc via usb cord in the back that I usually use for my card reader.
I was having no luck with this so I plugged it into the front usb slot that I use for my TV(Hauppage Software).
No luck here either, so I decided to give up.
Now my I am GETTING no sound out of any of my devices, TV, Real Player, ETC...
All usb cords are in place with previous devices plugged back in, card reader works.
Still no sound.
I tried plugging the TV device into the back usb slot and it worked fine except for the sound was still dead.
I've had a new mother board put in about a year ago with no problems since.
Go to Control Panel / System / Hardware / Device Manager...scroll the list to your sound device.

Any yellow exclamation points ? ?

If so re-boot and re-install your sound drivers.

If it's onboard sound they will be on your motherboard drivers CD...No yellow exclamation points showing.I would still try re-installing the appropiate drivers...Ta-Da!
All is well.
Thanks for the help! Excellent ! GLAD you're fixed up stop by ANYTIME....

Solve : Flashdrive recognition problem..?

Answer»

A friend of mine has a dell inspiron 600m laptop...she is running xp sp2 and has 512mb ram. She has had this problem for quite some time but whenever she tries to put in a flashdrive(doesnt' matter what brand) the computer detects it and brings up the install hardware wizard. Well whenever it would SEARCH for a driver it always comes up with an error saying can't install hardware windows cant located a driver for this device. Well I know that with xp you don't need to download drivers or not supposed to. It will recognize other usb devices just fine so I don't think it would be the usb ports themselves. I have tried LOOKING for a driver anyway just to say that I tried this option...well I couldn't find any made for xp( oh and her flashdrive is a lexar firefly which they were on SAFETY recall due to burning up but she got hers after all that mess was over with) I even tried mine and it still wouldn't work. In device manager it would come up with a ! mark above her flashdrive and it would name her flashdrive what it is supposed to be named (JD Firefly) if I click update driver or install driver it never would do anything...always come up with can't find driver for this device or no driver installed. I tried doing the sfc /scannow and that didn't FIX it though it didn't even ask for her xp cd which in all the other forums I have read it usually asks for it...not sure if this maybe it. Not really sure what the problem is. I was going to try and plug her flashdrive in and go into disk managment and change the drive letter..haven' tried this yet but maybe it will work...the only other thing I can think of is to whipe her HARDDRIVE and completely reinstall everything. If anyone has any suggestions or has had this problem I would like to hear as much input as I can. Thnx.Have you contacted a Dell helpdesk?

No I haven't.

Solve : simm and dimm?

Answer»

Hi all,am going for an a+ exam in the near future.i am a bit confused about single inline memory module (simm) and dual inline memory module (dimm). Is it a type of system memory like sd ram and ddr ram or it is a type of memory socket ? SIMMS and dimms are different kinds of memory module.

The main difference between SIMMs and DIMMs is that SIMMs have a 32-bit data path, while DIMMs have a 64-bit data path. Since INTEL's Pentium has (as do several other processors) a 64-bit bus width, it required SIMMs installed in MATCHED pairs in order to use them. The processor would then ACCESS the two SIMMs simultaneously. DIMMs were introduced to eliminate this inefficiency. Another difference is that DIMMs have separate electrical CONTACTS on each side of the module, while the contacts on SIMMs on both sides are duplicates of each other.

(1) SIMMs

(2) DIMMs
