You could try switching the plasma to slot 1...the connection on the plasma only fits in slot 2 otherwise i would, can i get an adapter for it or a different lead, thanks for the reply

Solve : Question about upgrading RAM...?

Answer»

I have a Compaq Presario Desktop that came with 256 MB of RAM. It has a Celeron 208 GHz processor. I have one additional slot for RAM that is empty. I'm running Windows XP and lately my pc is really bogged down. I got some new internet installed and the guy that installed it says I have to many programs on my pc.

My question is the internet installer says I don't have enough RAM. If I upgrade the RAM will that help my programs run faster?? How much RAM should I get?? Can I still use the 256 MB that's in my pc now and just add more to other empty slot??

Thanks! You should be able to just add another 256MB STICK in the second slot.
But we need to know exactly which stick you already have so we can get you an identical one.
In any case, while this will make your computer faster, you should really look into buying a whole new computer if you are looking for a significant improvement.Yeah I really need a new computer but I can't afford one until at least February. So I guess the memory is a good choice then?? I went to memory4all and FOUND my exact memory at a reasonable price so I guess I will try it out. I just have to decide if I want to buy a 256 MB stick or 512 MB stick.

Thanks! In the meantime you should free up some space on that HDD...this will cause slowdowns as well.
And do the regular maintenence as well including diskclean and defrag...Quote

guy that installed it says I have to many programs on my pc.
He PROBABLY MEANT too many programs running on your PC.
You should check that out too.Log on to crucial.com and do a scan and it will tell you what you can put in it.

Solve : Damsel in Distress-?

Answer»

HELP! I'm confused. Yesterday morning I installed some software which required me to restart the computer. Upon restarting, nothing happened, i.e. "the lights were on but no one home", there were none of the usual BEEPS, the only noises I can hear are the fan and a "click-click", "click-click", "click-click" sound coming from the back of the computer. The lights on the keyboard were not illuminated nor was anything appearing on my monitor. I inserted the disk it came with and tried to restart it with that, but still nothing. I've read Q&A on this WEBSITE...the no Post beeps points either No power (which it has), loose card or a short, and the repetative clicking sound points to a hard disk problem. I'm confused now, which is it? And could installing software create such a huge hardware problem or could this have been a fault in the machine itself. It's only a month old and if it makes any difference the os is Windows Vista basic home The clicking sound you hear is usually indicative of a hard drive failure. Installing software would not in itself cause the problem, but the restart could have been "The straw that broke the camels back" as it were if the PC SHIPPED with a less than perfect hard drive. My advice would be to return it from whence it came, if it's still under warranty.Buscrew--Cheers me dear! You're a star!Right! Another stupid question regarding my initial posting. I rang the manufacturer tech support line this morning to request they collect my computer for repair. Before they would come and collect it they told me to take the battery out of the motherboard for a few minutes and put it back in. I did this and amazingly ENOUGH the computer started.

Can anyone tell me why this worked? I makes no sense to me, but then again I have only a very basic understanding of these things. But then if I don't ask my stupid questions I'll never learn. That batteries small but important job is to retain the SETTINGS in the BIOS...
In simple terms this tells the machine how it is configured ; what hardware is installed and what time it is...
When you boot without this info the machine struggles to right itself and loads everything in a haphazard way and usually gets PRETTY cranky as it did.

Replace the battery.
Part # CR 2032 about 4 bucks and even available at Wally World or your local computer retailer...

Solve : DvdRom doesnt see disk?

Answer»

I put pictures on a CD-R (fujifilm) but my computer doesnt see it. I tried both the DVDRom and the writer. All other music movies and GAMES work fine on EITHER. Im not sure if it could be a format problem? If any one knows of issues I might try to make it work? These are my daughters baby pitures so Im pretty bummed right now. I hope I can fix it. Also, Im not a super computer whiz so be PATIENT if I have dumb questions!
Thanks for any help, HLOZAKhave you tried a different computer yet?It sounds like you didn't "finalise" the CD burn project.
The procedure is different for each burning software so we'll need to know that...
Meanwhile don't panic. DLoad and INSTALL IsoBuster. It can read these mistakes NORMALLY referred to as coasters and also retrieve your data.
When you open the CD with IsoBuster you can Extract the data back into a directory you make on the machine and then re-burn the CD without losing your pictures.
Let us know.

Solve : ViewSonic LCD Digital won't work?

Answer»

I have a ViewSonic LCD VA1912wb monitor - USING eVGA GeForce 7600GS video card. Windows XP Pro, Intel Core2Duo 6300 @ 1.86 GHz, 2 GIG Ram

I have been using the digital side of this monitor since I BOUGHT it in December. Never had a problem. All of a sudden, the digital side stopped working and only the analog will work now. I have updated the drivers for the video card, and I try to keep all my drivers current. Could this be a setting issue? I hope. Any thoughts on this would GREATLY be appreciated. Any switches on the monitor the little ones may have been playing with ? ?

Solve : My Computer PCI Card Disappeared!?

Answer»

I am trying to import from my mini DV camera into my computer to do some editing. I use a pirated VERSION of AVID Xpress PRO. Or the Legit version of Ulead Visual Studio 8. But all that don't matter to my problem as it seems my PCI card no longer exsist on my computer.

I bought a sound card a while a go and it was then where the problem first appeared, but the technician who installed the soundcard was able to fix it right away.
I don't know if the PCI dissapeared the next time i restarted my computer but i do need it now and it's just not there.

I went to device manager and there is no trace of it. I thought i should probably UNINSTALL the driver and restart the computer but i don't know how (since the PCI card is not there for me to right click).

I went to BIOS and checked that USB is enabled. What do i do? I need the soundcard for both programs or they will not work. And of course, i need the firewire for the camera. So neither are dispensable.

My system is:
Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
Service Pack 2

Computer:
Intel(R)Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz

Sound card is (reading off the box)
Audio Extreme 5.1
innoAX (innoVISION) TM

As for the firewire well it's "Made In China" hehehe...
USB2.0Card+IEEE 1394 FIREWIRE
Which ACCORDING to the box is supported by Windows XP

What can be done?
Quote

I use a pirated version of AVID Xpress PRO.

This is always a problem with machines...but enough about that.

Re-install your MBoard drivers and re-boot...Well if you can give me 1500$ for the real one i'd be happy to stop all my illegal activities .

Can you tell me how i basicly do that? I may seem to know what i'm talking about but i have no idea. I have the driver for this computer... Got it while recieving my computer. What next?I think i did it... I put the intel cd and a window popped up. It had a list of drivers and other applications. I checked all the drivers minus the sound one.

It installed them again i suppose... restarted automatically after every driver.
Then A new hardware was found and it was something BIOS. But a file was missing and i was unable to locate it. If i remember correctly it was called SMBios... not sure.

***
Edit:

Ok i restarted and got the "Found new Hardware again"

It's for: Intel (R) System Management BIOS Driver.
(live narration from now on )
I click. Install the software automatically as RECOMMENDED.

...

A loops is scanning the screen lol...

...

The CD-Rom worked a bit. The Driver CD is still there btw.

still searching...

...

setting a system restore point...

now the message i get is:
The file SMBios.sys on (unknown) is needed.

Type the path where the file is located, and then click OK.

Copy Files From:

***
It's not on the cd... Nor on C nor D (which are my hard drives of 2 seperate hard disks)

Running a search for 'files and folders' on all hard drives just to make sure i'm not supposed to give the exact path.

Found:
'mssmBios' system file in C:Windows\system32\Drivers
now is looking in D: so i dont think we found anything.

... yup nothing else is found.

Conducting the same search on the CD.
no results.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's as far as i know and dare to go.

Will need help again. Please?

No i don't have $1500.00 for you...sorry.
When installing MBoard drivers sometimes each COMPONENT requires a re-boot...this is why the process keeps repeating itself.
Follow it thru to the end.Yes man i have. There's just this one thing now.. SMBios. No file for it. Where can i get a SMBios.sys?

And the PCI card still not there.Try your board manuf. website.nah.. intel don't have it. Maybe i should just disable it? what would happen without it?

Edit: anyways, this didn't fix my problem. anything else we can try?*bump*

got anything for me?You didn't state who's MBoard this is...

Solve : No Respond From Hardrives Ect.?

Answer»

Well. i've been having a few problems lately with my computer which it is responding.

*started on pc
*comes to pages which checks memory , IDE *its laggs when it try detecting IDE*
*Next SCREEN DISK BOOT FAILURE, PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER
-=
*My DVD + CD drive doesnt respond i have connected everything right in
*I just formated my hardrive so OS on it yet. its completly empty.

Please someone help me thanks if there is no operating system on the drive there cannot be a system drive to detect,
then you will get "boot disk failure"
put your windows operating system disc in the cd/dvd drive then boot the pc depending on the boot sequence the bios will eventually find a boot sequence on the cd and begin the reinstall of windows.

you may have to enter the BIOS to change the boot sequence if it is set for only the hard drive,
then set the sequence to cd/dvd ,C , A

ater after reinstalling change it back to C , D ,A

have you changed any jumpers,
if two drives are on one ide cable one must be set a slave the other as master,
if both are set as master none will show,
make sure that the ide cables and molex power connectors are firmly in the motherboard and the back of each drive,
also make sure that drive detection in the motherboard BIOS is set to autodetect drives.
it is also not a good idea to have hard drives and cd/dvd s on the same ide cable.

okay. i have TRIED that. i FORGOT something

i have PLUGGED all DVD drive. power+IDE cable. my dvd doesnt respond when i try to press eject button , but when i pull out IDE out and i press eject it works...

help? You have either damaged the IDE cable or managed to insert it upside down...try another cable.
And post more details on exactly what drives you have and how you have them hooked up before we can assist further...
Example: i have 2 hard drives on IDE1 jumpered as master and slave and a DVD on IDE2 as master...etc.

Solve : Laptop Battery Question?

Answer»

Hi I have a Toshiba Tecra 8100 Laptop and I have an issue with it. It seems that my battery didn't hold a charge before. So I bought a new one. The problem was fixed and then it started to happen again. Now I can't use my laptop(without the cord) unless if I charge it first and then the charge won't hold for LONG. Any ideas? thanksHmm when you got the new Bat did you leave it to charge for a day or two yes. I left it for LIKE close to 3 days chargingIt may be the POWER cord/charger itself that went bad.
If you have an authorised Toshiba repair facility near you take the old battery to them and they'll TEST it ...normally for free. If the old battery charges up you need to replace the charger.
Don't tell them this if you don't have to they are prety expensive. That way you can shop around.

Solve : Computer start up problem?

Answer»

I recently put together a computer which, when I push the power button, starts to power up for 3-4 seconds, makes a couple of quiet ticking noises then shuts off. It will then automatically try to power up again and repeat this process until I switch it off at the wall. It never makes it FAR enough to display anything on the screen when it is doing this. Once I have switched it off at the wall and back on again, it usually boots up fine and operates as normal.

The computer has a E6750 proccessor on a Gigabyte motherboard (P35 chipset) with a 250GB SATA harddrive and 2GB of RAM. At first guess i would say there must be some thing wrong with your power suply.... Did you remember to use thermal compound on this build ? ?
Is the heatsink/fan combo fastened securely ? ?
Did you use all the MBoard standoffs REQUIRED ? ?

Solve : Video output problems?

Answer»

I am working on a GATEWAY 835GM Desktop Computer. The motherboard is an Intel (Big Lake) 945G Motherboard with built on video. The original problem with the computer was causing the display to go haywire. It was obvious to me to install a video card. So I purchased the PCIE 16 Geforce N6200 video card and installed it. EVER since then, when turning on the computer there is no output to the monitor (about %50 of the time). Everything powers up, just no output to the monitor. The other %50 of the time however, everything works absolutely perfectly. It appears to be TOTALLY random, the only slight pattern I have noticed is that it appears less likely to work after the PSU is unplugged from the wall. I have reseated the memory, etc. In the BIOS I have the video output changed from Auto to PCIE 16. Any comments or ideas would be great! Thanks in advance!Did you re-seat the vid card ? ?Yes I have re seated the video card numerous times. I was inclined to test the power supply however I recently noticed that when I remove the new graphics card and run in off of the old built on video it seems to start up %100 of the time. Its almost as if sometimes it chooses to run the video off of the one card and sometimes off of the built on video. I think I will try restarting with the new card until it doesn't show up and then switching cable to old build on video to see if that's running (taking over). Will let you know asap. I tried this and it makes no difference. When the video doesn't show it makes no difference which jack the monitor is plugged in to. Even after no video at startup if I switch to the other jack it makes no difference. Also, this has been tried with multiple monitors. Try the card in another slot.
The card may be failing also test it in another machine...I have no other PC's with a PCI Express Slot in it. I will RMA this new card with newegg get a replacement and try that. Thank YouI just found this website http://www.mysuperpc.com/vcu/troubleshooting_video_card_problems.shtml in which the guy talks about the exact problem i'm having. He calls it the "video card boot problem". One thing he says to consider is whether the PSU is sufficient to supply everything. He goes on to describe other fixes but I'm just curious on whether you think I may be putting the PSU over its limit with this card. I believe the PSU is only 230 Watts, however this is a wimpy card. Could I be pushing it over the limit to where it occasionally has trouble booting? Visit eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5 and get a solid NUMBER on how much power your hardware needs. 230W is a rather small PSU for modern desktop computers.

Are you saying the computer works with the new card about 50% of the time?

I think maybe I am going over the limit for the PSU. Thanks for that site! I am going to go buy a new PSU and see if that makes a difference. To me it seems to be about %50 of the time. However after reading that site I LISTED previously, it may be more of a hot or cold thing than a chance thing. I will get a PSU and RMA replace this vid card. ThanksDo yourself a favor and don't buy a cheapo $30.00 PSU.

Solve : 100% cpu usage?

Answer»

Its a Dell Dimension 2400 Computer. Prob is that EVEN when i go into safe mode it says 100% cpu usage. constantly with nothing running at all. Any ideas?how much Ram do you have? could be an error with windows, should have bought a Mac lol... YEAH check ONE of your ram cards has not come loose ?

I am not sure but i reckon you could have spyware or some sort of VIRUS have you tried a virus scan ??

Lets us no your computers full specs

And be glad you did not buy a mac Go into TASK Manager and click the Processes tab and the top. This shows all current processes/programs running on your computer.
Find the one(s) using the most Memory and find the ones using the most CPU and post it here.and also, if it says system idle process, don't bother.

now i'm not sure what's the problem, but taskmanager sometimes reads that process and displays it to your cpu usage.

otherwise, do what Carbon said.

Solve : Printer Tray Problem?

Answer»

Hey guys my first real problem!
Ok this may take a while but I am stumped.....

Now in my work in my office there is three computers running on thier own network, two 98's and 1 Xp MACHINE...... They both print to the same printer.....

Now as I work in a solicitor we use a program call opsis CASE MANAGEMENT system basically this allows you to work from precedents....

So when I say want to write to the client I HIT letter to client and it merges the client details into the letter and then I manually type the body of the letter, now this program is also meant to no whether the letter should be printed out on headed pager or plain paper generally it does, but the girl who is using xp is unable to print headed, I have changed the tray in printer set up still nothing prints to what EVER tray it wants, I have tried printing from word without opsis running in the background and it prints fine.

So would anybody know how to resolve this issue, I believe it’s a problem with opsis....

Solve : Would you.....?

Answer»

How can I find the board specs (for when the computer arrives).
But the person on ebay said "Intel 965 and 975X socket 775 Motherboards" only. Mines an alienware PCI Express Motherboard with Intel 925XE Chipset
And what makes a PROCESSOR good. GHz, Cache or somthing ELSE.
I emailed a computer friend of mine and he said, that I wont need to upgrade my processor because it will play most games/ programmes, how it is.
Is this right.
Cause, I don't want 3ds max 6 or half life 2 being slow, when I'm using them.
And what's good in a processor, cause everyone seems to go of topic when I ask
Thanks
Get a dual core, the Pentium 4 is still fine but a dual core will make a massive difference.
What's good in a CPU: more cache helps, more GHz or clock speed helps, a higher FSB helps if you have the motherboard to back it up, and dual or quadcore is also good.
Basically, if you're BUYING a new processor now, look for Intel Core 2 Duo or Core 2 Quad, or the Pentium Dual Core series.Quote from: saint_hades on August 28, 2007, 04:44:33 PM

How can I find the board specs (for when the computer arrives).

Thanks Calum, so if more GHz helps, than doesn't that make mine a, better processor, than the E6600, or do you need good everything else, cause the E6600, beats me on cache and I think everything else.

O' (reason I put the quote in), will the Intel core 2 duo E6600, work in my computer, or will I have to wait till the computer comes before I can KNOWA FASTER clock speed is only an issue if the processors are from the same series.
So a 3.4GHz Pentium 4 is faster than a 3GHz from the same line.
However, a Core 2 Duo E6300, for example, at 1.86GHz is much faster than either of the example Pentium 4s.
You will need a different motherboard - you have an older chipset so the Core 2 Duo will not work in it.Would this do, for a new motherboard and processor
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BUN-INTEL-6-0Ghz-Pentium-Dual-Core-16XPCI-E-Mobo_W0QQitemZ120154704393QQihZ002QQcategoryZ131530QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

And do you think I should get a new graphics card or, a new processor/ motherboardAnd are motherboards and processors easy to install and fit.
Or do you think I should just the a computer person to do it.That processor isn't good, it's Pentium D and is wrongly advertised as Pentium Dual Core.
They are fairly easy to fit, but if in doubt get an expert to do it.
You don't want to get it wrong and destroy them, they're pretty expensive parts.

Solve : New hard drive, need to change letter designation, but...?

Answer»

Anyway, I installed a new 80 gig HD to take the place of the aging 40 gig in my older PC operating Windows XP. I used clonning software to duplicate the old drive. I planned to use the older HD as additional storeage. But, now, after booting off the new drive (I think, as it is designated as drive 0, master. And the old drive set to drive 1, slave in the bios) it loads everything else off the old drive as it is designated C:

Under DISK Management I see I can change drive letter DESIGNATIONS but, since the old drive is set at C: I am unable to change it or reformat as it is still used by some software. I want to replace it with the new drive (currently F:) then, use my old drive for further storeage.

What to do now?

What do you mean "it loads everything else"?

You cloned the 40 GB onto the 80 GB drive, right?

The 80 GB drive is an exact copy of the 40 GB drive in every way?

If you remove the 40 GB drive altogether, does the system boot from the 80 GB drive?

If the answer to these questions is "yes",

disconnect the 80 GB drive

reconnect the 40 GB drive

boot from a floppy disk

format the 40 GB drive

connect the 80 GB drive as master

connect the 40 GB as slave

The now blank 40 GB drive is ready for use as storage.

Does it boot from the 80 after the 40 is removed ?

Answer is no. It does not get as far as the welcome screen. Comes to a hault just before.

I thought my proceedure would be an EASY way of going about this without BUYING backup software. Maybe not.How did you clone the 40 GB drive? You mentioned cloning software.

Whenever this procedure is used it involves re-setting jumpers...i think what happened is you successfully cloned the old to new and re-booted without changing jumpers...
Contrex's FIX above should work first time...
If they don't remove the 40G ribbon cable...make sure the 80G is jumpered to master and try again...

Note: Some drives have a " master with slave present" setting...if this is true in your case this is how the 80G should be jumpered.

Solve : Booted from games?

Answer» No, I have only one VIRUS protection AVG. I uninstalled MCAFEE before I installed the AVG.

As for the games. Yes, GSN, POOGO.COM, GAMEDESIRE.COM, GAMEHOUSE.COM these are all online game site. But the emulator game I was playing from "My Documents" and not connected to AOL.

As for the IEB to play the games that doesn't WORK EITHER. At least not on those I've tried it on. I'll go back and try again. I have been working with Microsoft Techs for two straight weeks on all kinds of things since I had to validate my copy of Windows. I have installed and uninstalled programs up the wazoo, and as I said been reformatted twice. I even had IE6 upgraded to IE7.

*It should be noted that I know diddley squat about computers.
So................What is the question ?Moderator, please end this topic in this THREAD only.Done.

Solve : HP Photosmart Printer connected to iMac trying to make it print on both sides?

Answer»

Hi - I am having a problem with my HP Photosmart All-In-One Printer (model 3210xi). For whatever reason I can not get the printer to print on two SIDES of the paper. I have followed the directions exactly as outlined on HP's owners MANUAL and on their web page. Although I select "Two SIDED Printing" from the menue and CHECK the box where it says "Print Both Sides" it will just print out the pages in consecutive order (1,2,3,4 .. etc.) rather than print either the odd or even numbered pages first. I am using an iMac ver. 10.4. The directions are very INTUITIVE so I can not understand what is wrong - is it me, the printer, or the computer? Any and all help will be very much appreciated. Ill Pm u a link....

If you type the name of the flash drive problem into google you may be able to find the DRIVERS you needXP doesn't require flash drive drivers...

Is it new ? ?
Is there INFO on there you need ? ?
Have you tried it on another machine ? ?Try MS USB Flash Drive Manager:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=94991901-bfc4-485e-bcae-c9df0accdaae&displaylang=en

Use the properties tab to view and change settings. Incidentally some of these DEVICES have a locking switch on the case, CHECK to see if it is locked.

Solve : New Saitek Eclipse Will Not Work With Game?

Answer»

I have purchased a new Saitek Eclipse KEYBOARD for my pc. The old keyboard plugged into the back of the cpu via a PS/2 connection. The new keyboard has a USB connection. I unplugged the old keyboard and connected the new keyboard in the USB port. It works for everything except when I want to play my on-line game (Lord of the Rings Online).

I thought it MIGHT be that the game is looking for the keyboard at the PS/2 port, so I tried rebooting several times with the new keyboard plugged in. Still doesn't work. I also tried uninstalling the game and reinstalling it to see if it might reroute with the new connection. Still doesn't work.

The main purpose for getting this new keyboard was to play this game. I need help!

Thanks,
Melinda~Did you install the drivers for the new keyboard ? ?There were no drivers to install. No cd in the BOX. Looked at their website and it states that it's plug and play, no drivers necessary. Are you running Vista ? ?

Even if not go to Control Panel /System/Hardware/Device Manager...find the keyboard listing right clik it and select remove.
You will get a warning message...ignore it and re-boot.
Windows will automatically re-install it.

See if this improves things.No....running XP. Plugged the keyboard into my husband's computer and it works FINE. *sigh*

Tried plugging into 2 different USB PORTS....still works fine everywhere except when it's time for the game to load.

I will try to uninstall the keyboard drivers. We'll see what happens.Just so you know it's best to use the rear USB ports for any device acting up...it's a known power issue on tons of machines out there.Still doesn't work. Bummer.
We'd need to know the differences between your husband's and your machine to tell any further...
If it works on his that means it's not the keyboard at fault.Redefine the controls of your keyboard from the game? or reinstall the game... Just a thought.

Solve : Unsure whats failing??

Answer»

I am having problems when I start my computer. It does not want to boot. The only way I can get it to boot up is if I MANUALLY force it to boot from the hard drive. I think this is an indication that a piece of hardware is going because I made sure there was nothing in the CD Rom Drive when it wouldn't start. Also If it helps anyone the other day the computer COULD not find the operating system the first 3 times I tried to start the computer, and then magically the system was found again. I have an HP Pavilion Notebook with an after market hard drive so it may just be time to get a new hard drive again. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? i would get a new hard drive but it sounds like a very very bad virusSeanbond why are you talking about viruses? Nothing in phleba23's post suggest a virus.

phleba23 exactly how are you forcing it to boot?
Do you know the make of the hdd? If you do, download a hdd diagnostic tool from the manufacturer.I am making it book by hitting esc in the first few moments of booting and choosing the booting order, I am not sure of the hard drive type but I installed it so I can open the computer back up and find out. Thanks you.
Oh and I did run another Virus Scan. No Viruses.I agree with Deerpark. Use the free utilities from the drive maker's website to check the HDD.
The other things you can check as well before SPENDING any money:

DLoad and run MemTest to test the RAM. Let it run a few hours. Any ERRORS and you have bad RAM

Also try to borrow a known good PSU and swap it into your MACHINE. If the symptoms go away it's time to replace the power supply.

Post back with your results of the above and we'll go from there...Quote from: patio on August 12, 2007, 09:24:09 AM

Also try to borrow a known good PSU and swap it into your machine. If the symptoms go away it's time to replace the power supply.
patio, it's an HP Pavilion Notebook PC.Ooooooops...It sounds to me like your laptop is having trouble recognising the after market HD and after you shut down it's forgetting the bios settings and reverting to the default and then you're back to where you started from.
Conclusion... flat cmos battery, cheap to buy but I'm not sure how difficult they are to change, if it's easy (or cheap) I'd try it first.Just thought I would update people since everyone was so nice to help me. Since the couple of times my computer has acted up. It hasn't done anything out of the ordinary so my parents thought I should probably just wait until the computer totally tanks and then take it to a professional. Thank you very much for all of you help.If it tanks again stop here first...explain the price difference to your Parent's and i'm sure they will understand.

Glad to hear you are up and running though.

but list your pc specs and one of the pros will tell you what you need most ! Get a new CPU, new motherboard and new graphics card.
But not that CPU and board, they're older technology, not good performance, and expensive.Right. Change of mind.
What motherboard will work with the Intel E6600 duo.
And were can I get one cheapAny Socket 775 motherboard that support Intel Core 2 Duo will work with the E6600.
Here's a good board that SUPPORTS Core 2 and SLI.INTEL Pentium D 6.0Ghz & 4MB L2 Cache << not true no such thing *

Of topic, how do you have writing as a link, insead of having the link
ThanksExactly, but in the minds of Ebay sellers 3GHz dual core --> 6GHz dual core.
Quite how they work that out I don't know, but it's a VALID point.
I overlooked it - too used to just halving the speeds all the time to get past that.
Edit: yes, that board will work fine with either processor.
And to have writing as a link, use {url=yourlink.com}your text{/url} and replace { with [, } with ].
Hope this helps.Thanks Calum,
Big help as always.
I'll get my computer person to fit the motherboard, and I'll bye the processor when I can

Ok i just plugged in my extrernal philps dvd and its not playing dvds , and in my computer its being read as CD-DRIVE....... any thoughts on how to fix this.....

my drive : DVD-DRIVE Update Driversdoesnt have drivers....Google the serial number and you should FIND driversA DVD drive will report itself to Windows according to the last type of media that was used in it...
Another fine example of how Bill G thinks he's smarter than the rest of the World.
Re-boot...put a DVD in and play something and re-boot and see how it is being identified to prove this,
If it's ACTUALLY refusing to play DVD's there may be other issues...you need to post what player you are running what type of DVD this is and where this DVD was scarfed from to go further...hey patio

Theres a link to the dvd-drive in my 1st post ... and sorry i didnt explain to you what i had already done ... i did try that method rebooting with a dvd in , didnt work i also tryed disableing in it in bios . that didnt work ..... im trying to run a game ...... dvd-rom of course , doesnt read or anything just flashs and thats it ..... i have a internal up and running at the moment , but i need to port for my harddrive so it cant stay there for to long .....

Solve : My printer only print out black pages, HELP!?

Answer»

Hi all,

I got a CANON Laser Shot LBP-1120 printer but it only print out black PAGES only while I proceed to the printing command. I am using Window 2000. Any suggestions to solve it? Please help! Thanks!
1. New INK cartridge

2. Clean the head

3. Reinstall (i love that one)

4. Wait some one will help Blanck or Black, that is the question, or is it blank?lol i went with blankYes, I changed a new cartridge already and it's the same. And then, I cleaned the roller and all area around the cartidge, I re-installed the print driver and it still prints the full page black page, just like the paper is permed into black even THOUGH the margin part, fully in black. I scanned with the Norton Anti-virus and no virus were found. However, 2 days ago, I NOTICED the printer was a bit strange. When it printed, the image is blurred (but the cartridge actually is full) and 1 hour later, I printed the same thing and it was 100% neat.

Solve : Anyone have experience with Western Digital USB HD?

Answer»

I bought a WD MY BOOK Premium ES Edition HD to backup several of my office PCs and laptops. I was told at the store I purchased from, this would not be a problem. Specifically, I told them the application was to go to each PC and back up data. I was told that I could name each of the PCs(or hard drives) and back them up at will; by name. I have been looking all through this new drive and the support site for it and I have found no mention of this capability.

So before I take it back to the store (BEst Buy) I would like to know if there is indeed any way to make this WORK for the above application. Does anyone have any advice for this or how they would backup several devices not all on a network.

Thank youYou ran into a Salesman...
But more details would be HELPFUL...when you say backup how are you doing it? ?
What software do you plan on using? ?
How many machines ? ?
What is the frequency of the backups ? ?Quote from: patio on August 29, 2007, 07:50:21 PM

How many machines ? ? guessing 5-12 OR I am pretty scared of this Comp.
What is the frequency of the backups ? ? (software) << what type are you going to be using again ? Did You know you* will have to buy this "extra" $$ ....probably did not come with your computer...

PS... LISTEN to Patio ...western digitals are cr** i bought 1 at christmas and so far its stop working 4 times and had to be formated 4 times, so that means i have actually lost all my back up 4 times, which meant when my computer got VISTA installed... my EXTERNAL hd went down and i lost all my data because vista deleted it all on my local hd (because it's rubbish) and my external hd had to be formated as it said that it was a 1kb RAW file system not the fat32 it should be, moral of the story buy a sever to do you back ups...Vista doesn't just delete things...a RAW file system is a symptom of a drive that has been unplugged prematurely...I have 3 laptops and 3 pc's on a Dell server. Essentially I thought this would make a convenient light to medium technical routine of going to each system and first making a complete backup, and then making scheduled incremental data backups. I was told that the WD HD as able to identify or Make provisions for me to identify each machIne and back It up.

Well.............that's sort of correct. (After spending most of the day tracking down information from Western Digital and backup software vendors). I can create folders and after copying or backing up a system, then copy/paste or drag the files into the created folders I made. Ok...I can live with that, not as lazy as I wanted to be, but it works.

As far as the incremental data backups, it ain't gonna happen with the EMC retrospect Express that comes with the MY Book Premium ES. Apparently, Western Digital does have a fairly nice software called HD Backup software, but I cannot purchase it. (Even though they list it on their website and give details etc....) So..I am looking for a client softare that I can install on each machine that I hope at a reasonable price will allow for incremental backups, scheduled events etc. Does anyone have a software that will do all of this?

Thanks for and all advice,I use Acronis True Image for backups...it can not only be scheduled but will also do incremental backups.
Best deal on it is at newegg...Kudos to GX1_Man...
You may also want to look into burning your backups regularly to CD/DVD...all HDD's fail eventually.Quote from: gator32 on August 30, 2007, 06:54:31 PM

Solve : power supply (?)?

Answer»

Power supply?

I’m not totally sure what’s wrong with my computer.
I have a PM8M-V motherboard
3.0Ghz p4 CPU
2 GB RAM
6200 Graphics card
Raidmax Stagitta case w/ 420W power supply.

I had everything set up in a case and got it to turn on in the BIOS but I lost interest and didn’t do anything with it for awhile. When I came to revisit I found that the power supply had died so I bought the new case.
Well, it’s not turning on. Sometimes (about 20%) I’ll get the lights to come on the front for half a second, the fan sounds like it’s starting and then nothing HAPPENS.
The power supply is set correctly to 115V. I don’t have a multimeter, though I suppose I could get one if I had to.
Does this SOUND like it’s most likely a power supply problem, or did something happen to my other components? Maybe I magically don't have something hooked up right? I've checked and re-checked a million times though.

Suggestions: (1) You may want to consider purchasing 184-pin DIMMs along with your motherboard if your existing memory is not of this type. (2) Be sure that you are USING a Socket 478-compatible processor with this motherboard.

3.0Ghz p4 CPU pretty damed sure thats a775 cpu~socket.......... look here 1st, then Listen to Patio or the hidden GX1-Man

Solve : Built in Vga taking up valuable RAM?

Answer»

Hi i recently bought a new graphics card (nvidia fx 5200) for my old pc, it only has a 1.5 ghz amd proccesor and 256mb of rami decided long ago that i would leave me new mac game free, as it is a company computer and it doesnt look good having games all over your pc when your doing a presentation.
Anyway i installed it fine and disabled my old built in vga card and it was running fine, apart from my old vga takes up 16mb of ram even tho it isnt doing anything, this might not sound much but several games that require 256 Ram wont work because of this 16 Mb short fall, is there anyway of entirely disabling this built in vga without cutting it out with a saw?Look in your BIOS for an option to disable it.
It's often in a section called something like ONBOARD peripherals, and is SOMETIMES called onboard or integrated graphics, VGA or display adapter.
Also, consider upgrading your RAM, 256Mb is not a lot, especially for games.yea i disabled it trough my bios but it still eats up that 16mb, and i cant upgrade my ram, my motheboard wont take anymore even tho it came with 2 ram slot ONE already FILLED with 256 ram...Download, unzip, install and run Everest Home Edition
Everest

Select Computer>Summary from the left HAND screen.
Right click in the right hand screen & select Copy All
Paste the details in here.Your MBoard maxes out at 256 MG of RAM ? ?

Is this a 486 ? ?436? yes it does max out at 256 but i never get this due to my built in vga...

Solve : not reading OK-3.5 diskettes?

Answer»
Hi,
I have an OLD computer with WIN-95, 32 Mb RAM. It always worked perfect, I can access Internet, save files in HARD drive or diskette, etc. But now suddenly it can not save anything in 3.5 diskettes. When it reads one, or if I try to write on diskette, it indicates - diskette is not FORMATTED, do you want to format? -.
The diskettes are OK since can be read read them in other computers with W-XP or W-98. They are virus free, with files or empty, new or used, all are considered unformatted by my PC. I CHECKED the system in – Panel - CONFIGURATION, diskette controllers, but it says all is OK. What may be happening, the diskette reader is spoiled ? do I need to change the drive, or it may be a failure of system or registry? I will appreciate any help.- Thanks in advance. how much does a new diskette drive cost?

Solve : Builting a PC?

Answer» HELLO Gents, I have a question or two. Can i built a descent pc that's at least a dual core with about a $650 dollar budget? ThxOr suggestions as to which mother boards cpu's and graphics cards are down the alley of my budget, thx for all or any replies. What exactly do you want?
A motherboard, CPU and graphics card?
Or a whole PC?
And how GOOD does it need to be?I don't think so-

Do you want a monitor ? Makes the whole THING more expensive

There is no point going for a poor duel core but i reckon that would be at least $300

A decent graphics card about $300

Mother Board $100

Power supply depending on your graphics card you may need to get a bigger power supply

So in sort you need more money ...You guys are right i didn't think it would be enough. So one ? Is this a descent notebook?? The one on the far right of the page, thx again. http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/services/inspnnb/1520_DNCWKA1?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhsIt's OK, but you could do better.
And it ALWAYS depends what you want it for.
Do you not want a desktop any more then?
I didn't say it was impossible, I just asked exactly what you needed. Here this might do the job !

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/cfgc2d.asp?v=dThey seem pretty expensive to me . . .$609.00 ??With an 8400GS - not exactly great for gaming.
I went through the configurator, and got a good gaming config, for around $760.
Better to DIY.Not bad. It is right around my budget, and will definitely LOOK into that one. I have a pc right now it stinks pretty much. I mentioned a laptop because i can take it to work with me or chill in my bedroom with it, and use this pc as my backup for storage. It's a 1.8ghz pentium 4-which is bad the only thing good about it is that i have 2bg ram on it and about 800 gb of hard drive space and a 5200fx 256mb graphics card it's so so. So if i can get a good laptop for about 800 i rather do that.

Solve : Sony VAIO PCG-VX71P CMOS?

I recently got this old laptop from a friend,, I know what the PROBLEM is but I can't seem to find the CMOS battery to fix it.

Does anybody know where the CMOS battery is on this model? I have taken most of it apart and there doesn't seem to be a CMOS battery ALTHOUGH I know there is ONE on it somewhere, I need to replace it.Have you traveled to Sony's site ? ?
Most manuf. have owners MANUALS online that you can DLoad...I use Google a lot when asking questions, I rarely resort to asking on forums unless I have practically searched everything I can, Googling doesn't do much good for this laptop

And looking on the manufactures site would be the first thing I would do.

This laptop has an Intel Pentium 3 processor running at 850MHz. which means it left sony's site ages ago, hence I am asking here.

Here are its specs for anyone who is curious.

Solve : How data is saved in USB Data Traveller?

Answer»

Hi there,

I am want how DATA is saved in USB data traveller. Waiting for quick positve
reponse.

Regards,

Mumtaz Ali

Hyderabad, Pakistan

Hello Machachar.

Are you asking how to save things on your USB data traveler or are you asking how it WORKS?Removable storage has been around almost as long as the computer itself. Early removable storage was based on magnetic tape like that used by an audio cassette. Before that, some computers even used paper punch cards to store information!

Punch cards like the one above had holes that the computer interpreted as specific info

We've come a long way since the days of punch cards. New removable storage devices can store hundreds of megabytes (and even gigabytes) of data on a single disk, cassette, card or cartridge.

If your asking how to save it, it should be plug and play, if not go to my computer it will be like j://DRIVE or somthing

    Solve : Sound!!!!!!?

    Answer»

Can anyone tell me how to ungrade, or update my sound card? I have windows xp if that helps!!!!!You can UPGRADE your sound card by purchasing one that is compatible with your current operating system. Find one at any computer or retail store that carries sound cards. Make sure your computer meets the MINIMUM system requirements for the new sound card.

You can update your current sound card one of two ways...

    1) Visit Windows or Microsoft Update for updated hardware DRIVERS for your installed sound card

    2) Visit your sound card manufacturer's website for an updated driver RELATED to the sound card you currently have installed

I HOPE you found this information useful...This doesn't happen to be related to your Sims 2 problem, does it? If so...that has nothing to do with your sound card. Just curious.

    What are your system temperatures?
Measure them in the BIOS from a cold start (leave the computer off for a while before you take readings) using Speedfan and Everest just after boot, Speedfan and Everest after the computer has been on for, say, an hour, and once more with Speedfan and Everest after playing a game or doing something else intensive.
    Download Speedfan here.
Download Everest here.I Really appreciate ya help man... But i dont get it!! i mean dunno anythin bout bios!

can u guide me plz...Press delete, escape, F1, F2 or F10 to get into the BIOS when booting.
Watch for a screen that says "Press (key) to enter BIOS or SETUP" and press the key specified.
If all else fails, turn it on and just keep tapping escape, delete, F1, F2 and F10 until you get in.
Then look for the temperatures, they are in a different place in each BIOS.AND THEN??Follow the instructions in posts #4 and #6.Yo, what processez haz u gots runnin'? Something might be overworkin' ya CPU, so u should check da Task Manager and see if anything be usin' up a lot o' resourcez. Peace.

Solve : My monitor suddenly turn off with "NO SIGNAL"..."POWER SAVE..Pls Help?

    Answer»

    Dear Experts,

I was using the PC and suddenly, my monitor get turned off, but the light on power button changed the color from green to orange with dark on the monitor and there was "POWER SAVE"...and something said "NO SIGNAL..". Now, I cannot use my PC because I tried restarted the PC but still turned off...How to fix this problem? Can anyone help me for this..

I am very appreciate for your HELPS..

    Thanks,

    NatashaHello Natasha.

It's like foning your favorite car MECHANIC and telling him/her that your car won't start and asking what you can do... His first question will be "Whats the make and model?"

So the first question about your monitor is "What's the make and model?"

This fault is 'generally' caused by damage to the connection cable, or incorrect plugging but may be caused by heat STRESS or a video card problem. We could accept some details of your pc as WELL, the more info you supply the better chance of us being able to come up with a reasonably sane diagnosis..

    Thanks.Hi,

Thanks for your reply. My motherboard is ASUS and the videocard is NVIDIA but I dont know the exact serial since the PC is turned off. However, the monitor is MINFO. The monitor is connected to Video Card. The video card include all components in the PC Case itself is more than 4 years old. What do you think?

    Thanks,

Natasha At 4 years old it may be the vid card going bad.
Did it display any other weird symptoms prior to this such as strange lines and or colors ? ?
The best way to diagnose this would be to first hook up another monitor...if the other monitor does the same thing then it's probably the vid card failing.
Do you know anyone in your area you can borrow a vid card from ? ?
If so swap it in there to confirm the card is the problem...

Solve : Guide on how to install new HDD!?

    Answer»

My HDD on my Toshiba Dynabook satellite laptop got bad,i bought a new 40GB Toshiba HDD(MK4032GAX).
i've REMOVED the old one, inserted the new one in place.I put the laptop on but nothing displays on the screen. But the HDD led remains on INDICATING that it is being accessed. But the screen seems dead.
But on removing the HDD the Screen comes back. But reports #HDD0 error!
I DONT know whether there is any special way to installing the NEWLY bought HDD.Please i will be sincerely grateful if anynoe could offer me a help.!You do have an other HDD for Windows do you?

Jonas Normally.....and I say normally because I'm not 100% positive on all notebook systems, all you gotta do is swap out the HDD and reinstall Windows on the new one. If you're getting no video or you don't even know if the computer is POSTing then check the System Setup or BIOS screen without any HDD to SEE if there are any options for a new HDD on the system. You could also try resetting to Defaults in case anything changed in there........if all that fails, then u might've bought a bad HDD.Well you did install windows on the new one?
It could be that the BIOS is blocking the HDD I had the same problem with a DVD reader a while ago.

Jonas You should have a CD that shipped with the new HDD...boot with this in the drive and use the utilities to prepare the drive for an OS install...No i have not installed any O/S on the newly bought HDD.
If i insert it in the laptopm, the laptop starts with the HDD led being on continiously, the CPU fan working, but the Screen is blank.
On removing the HDD,the Screen Shows up.I dont know what to do.
Needed urgent help.Without an OS you can't do much.
Set you BIOS to boot from disk.
Insert an OS drive and you're good to go.

Jonas I've set the the BIOS to boot from HDD,but nothing sems to work!

    Solve : flashing lcd monitor?

Answer» WHENEVER I turn on my monitor in the morning, it ALWAYS flashes for a few seconds, then the screen goes blank. Usually I've discovered that if I walk away for a few min., and then turn the monitor off and then on, it flashes for a longer period of time, then goes blank. If I then walk away a few more minutes and turn it off, then on, it usually flashes for a while, then goes to a steady picture.

I've tried gently hitting it, to no avail, nothing at all happens (besides the symptomatic flashing, then offness).

Also, this flashing activity does not occur once the picture stops flashing, as LONG as I leave the monitor on.

So, my question: This is a 22" flat screen LCD monitor, and I don't really have the finances to replace it right now so, is there any type of affordable repair that could be done on this monitor?

thanks for any advice Quite honestly, I personally don't know of any cheap repairs that would be better than replacing the monitor. Have you tried to reseat the cable for the monitor or even try the monitor on another computer to see if it STILL has the same problem?Quote
Have you tried to reseat the cable for the monitor or even try the monitor on another computer to see if it still has the same problem?

The flashing even occurs if I turn off the computer, and the monitor displays the "standby mode" message, so it cannot be related to the cable or the computer, unfortunately.HI again!

Now that I'm finally coming to terms with the eminent death of my dearly beloved monitor, I am considering an upgrade to a wide-screen monitor, however, how do I check to see if my video card can support the resolution that a wide-screen monitor would call for, without stretching the image?

my video card is the following:

    NVIDIA GeForce 6200 Turbocache(TM)

(I got that info via device manager)

    Solve : PSU Installation Problem?

    Answer»

    Hi
I had a problem with my computer switching off, and I was told that this was because my PSU was not working properly. I decided to have a go at replacing the unit, and bought an x power atx 450td to replace a 300 watt PSU.

I installed the PSU, connected everything, and all hardware is working fine, exept that I have no output to my monitor. The mother board is a 20 pin connection, which holds my graphics card and has no other power supply. other conections are to the dvd WRITER, dvd drive, floppy, and hard drive. All appear to be working fine, but I can't be sure about the hard drive.

from memory the computer spec is

    pentium 2
    160 gb hard drve
    windows xp sp2
    ATI radion 9200 Graphics card

Thanks in advanceDoes the vid card have a 4 pin power connection on it ? ?
If so you need a 24 pin PSU to run that card.Quote from: corneilius on August 06, 2007, 11:36:01 AM

... the dvd writer, dvd drive, floppy, and hard drive. All appear to be working fine, but I can't be sure about the hard drive.
You mean you can't be sure about the hard drive because you can't see anything on your monitor, right? Do you have an LED on front of your computer that would normally be flickering while the hard drive is running? Does it appear to be working during startup? Do you hear any sounds, such as the Start Windows tune?

Have you checked your video card to verify it's properly seated in the slot? It may have gotten dis-located during the PSU installation.

    Thanks for the replies

Patio, the 300 watt unit I took off only had a 20 pin conector to the motherboard, I have looked at the graphics card and there is no obvious connection for a 4 pin conector.

Soybean, yes I can't be sure about the hard drive because there is no signal to the monitor, but the LED is working as it should when the computer is turned on.

Is it possible to wire the PSU to the different components incorectly?I have connected the mother board with the 20 pin, and the dvd writer, dvd drive, floppy and hard drive with 4 pin some which are 'daisy chainned'. I have other conectors which are not used, but the 300 watt unit had these also.

I will check on the Graphics card.

Thanks again. Is this a Dell ? ?No the computer was bought new from a trader at a computer fair, so is not 'branded'.What brand PSU ? ?

I've seen duds right out of the box.

In general i stay away from the cheap ones...Not meaning this as an INSULT, but have you checked the obvious yet?

Was the monitor cable jostled loose during the repair?

Is the video card seated properly?

What happens when you plug a different monitor into the machine?Talk about STUPID. checked the seating of the card and realised there is a monitor output from the card, as well as an output from the motherboard.

Guess who had linked my monitor to the motherboard instead of the graphics card as it had been in the first place. Duh!!!!

Everything is working ok now. Thanks for all the help posted by everyone.
