Solve : new cd burner program overrides Roxio Creator?

Answer»

running window XP.
Had to replace burner. Got LG cd/dvd burner it comes with quick install that contains burning program.
I was already using Roxio Creator 6 program,( for years, I like it, and won't to keep it) my problem is that the new burner program over takes Roxio and I can't make it stop. HELP, How do I make Roxio my one and only program forr burning. Why can't you load Roxio?Burner programs have been known to bang heads with each other...un-install the one that came with your LG burner using add/remove programs and you should be good to go.

patio. 8-)You may need to reinstall the Roxio software as well.Hello
I have tried to do that. I found out that the NERO program is enbedded in the quick start driver disk. when I go to the add/delete menu, it is not on the list. If I remove the whole startup disk then my computer saids there is no driver.
Now what do I do? I like roxio for me it is EASIER to use. I don't like the nero program and I can't take the burner back to the store now that I have opened it Thanks to all that answered my call for help. Raptor give me the answer that worked. He said to try
associalting a burnable Cd with another program:
right click on DVD-RW station and go to properties. from there proceed to the AUTO play tab. Select "blank CD" from the drop down list. Tag the option "Select the action you would like to perform" CHOOSE the program ( for me that is Roxio) click "apply" then click "ok"
and it worked. You're welcome, come back if you need more help.

Solve : 5 1/4" drive trouble?

Answer»

I recently tried an old 1.2mb 5.25" FDD in my 500mhz Celeron PC running windows 98. No matter what combination I USE with the ribbon cable, it would not work even though the 3.5" FDD on the same cable would. I tried both 360 and 1.2mb in the BIOS and all I would get is a Drive A: (Or B:, depending on how I had jigged it up) after POST, or in Windows 98 it would reply Drive A:\ (Or B:\) Not Ready. I got this with 3 different floppy cables (Card edge connector) and assumed it was the drive.

I have just got 2 brand new tandon metal chassis 1.2mb 5.25" still sealed, and I get the same results. Surely they wouldn't make the mobo incompatible but put the option in the BIOS?

How can I solve this? I have never connected a large 5.25" FDD but are you sure you properly connected the ribbon cable? Pin 1 is the red line and it should go on.. Pin 1..

Also, keep in that mind that Connector A: is the connector with the twist in the cable.Yes, I have set the connector every which way and the jumpers on the drive as well.
The closest I have managed is to get the computer to recognise the drive. When I click on it's Icon in windows the motor twitches up and down for a minute and then states that Drive A: is not ready.

For the purposes of simplification I removed the 3.5" and said so in the BIOSQuote

I have just got 2 brand new tandon metal chassis 1.2mb 5.25" still sealed, and I get the same results. Surely they wouldn't make the mobo incompatible but put the option in the BIOS?

How can I solve this?
I'm amazed to hear you can still buy those things. Why would anyone buy them? They were obsolete long ago.

If you need a floppy drive, why not get a 3.5 inch drive?
I work with really old hardware, these are very useful for data transfer. Currently, I have an XT clone and a IBM compatible luggable that are very nice doorstops right now cos I can't get a boot disk. Also, once they boot Iwould like to be able to transfer files and use SOFTWARE on 5.25" disk.Curious: Why would you work with machines as old as that?I do so by choice

For the following reasons:

1) I'm Curious
2) They're easier to understand
3) You have greater control over the hardware - You know exactly what's going on
4) If i break one messing about, it's no biggie. They rarely cost more than £50, often for free.
5) A wierd feeling of nostalgia - Wierd as in I'm not old enough to have used most of these before.
6) There are a lot more interesting sounds and smells
7) There's a lot of them
They are pretty reliable
9) Interesting media!
10) Huge archive of free and abandoned software/games.Alright. And you are certain the 5.25" FDD is in good condition?

Perhaps you should CONTACT the mainboard MANUFACTURER and ask them if your mainboard supports 5.25" FDD's. Sometimes the option to configure them is there, but it might be removed in later BIOS updates because it probably never worked in the first place.I am certain. Two brand new sealed drives and 1 used but working drives - Can't be by chance.

I'll contact the manufacturer tonight. You might want to look in your bios for an option "floppy drive detect". It allows the bios to check floppy drives during post. You might also have to set windows to look for floppy drives on each boot.
Right click my computer, click properties, click performance, click file system, click floppy drives, check "look for floppy drives on each reboot".I discovered th problem was I was using DD disks in a HD drive.
Soons as I can get my hands on some, I'll be fine. You can most likely use those disks under DOS by setting drivparm in config.sys or in Windows by setting it in config.dos. The only drawback is that when you use a different disk type you would have to REM the line in the config files.Hmm, I found out that I was using the right disks anyway, DS DD, I can read 360k ones (Not got any 1.2mb) move, edit copy and save files and programs safely and completely, but can't format any disks. Windows tells me that there is no disk in the drive or the drive is open. DOS FORMATTING gives a Not Ready error.

Solve : can't fix hard drive?

Answer»

I have a COMPAQ Presario 4505 from around 1996 with a new hard drive. I have looked at the help on this site, but nothing works. This is my problem: when I installed Windows 98 SE on my computer, when it was checking my hard drive, it found several bad sectors on my hard drive that I might need to reformat on BIOS. I have gotten to BIOS, but I don't know how to do what I need. Also, because I have not been able to install anything and have it work, I checked my hard drive space and my computer SAYS I have a 501 gigabyte hard drive! I know when I got my hard drive it was 40 gigabytes.help

P.S. How do I find what the maker of my hard drive is?Download the free diagnostics from the appropriate drive maker's site. Bad sectors are signs of a failing drive. As is 10 years old it may be time for a replacement before proceeding further. Post back with your findings. Was it a brand new drive or just new to you?Quote

It was new when I got it a few months ago, and I don't know how to find the maker of my hard drive. Can I get help for that?

P.S. I am STILL using Windows 98 SENO need to edit posts and delete pertinent info or make duplicate posts for the same issue. I just moved this where it belongs and deleted the duplicate thread. You're new here. You'll learn.

To find the hard drive maker take out the hard drive and look at what's printed on it. There are other ways if Windows works, like running Everest Home:

Solve : New Build. XP does not load?

Answer»

I have just completed a self build, specification thus:-

Motherboard:- ASUS M2N-E (Socket AM2)
Processor:- AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (socket AM2)
HDD:- Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB (SATA2)
Memory:- 2x512mb (DDR2)
DVD +/- RW

My problem is that, I cannot get the Operating System (XP Home) to load. Having got to the final Windows load screen, it 'freezes' showing the Windows XP logo with an empty bar. That's it! Please can a kind person , help me out? I've build other SYSTEMS in the past, but this is the first time I have been stuck. Please help if you can!Bad RAM is my guess. Those are the symptoms when my RAM goes bad. What brand is it? I hear that Corsair, kingston and pqi are good. When you hook everything together and it doesn't work it can be difficult to determine where the problem is.

Use the free download at www.memtest86.com to test the RAM. One stick at a time for an hour, then all together.

Use the free diagnostics at the Western Digital site to test the HARD drive. If everything passes let us know and we will proceed. Thanks linuxman and GX1_Man, for your quick and valued support, I'll follow your suggestions, and let you know how I get on.

Solve : Data recovery tools??

Answer»

}{ey guys! Happy Thanksgiving!

Just got a question for one of you who has some spare time. I have a possible dead HDD and want to see if any DATA can be recovered. anybody KNOW of some good tools (boot CDs etc) for recovering data from a dead/dying drive?

You guys should see this drive. Even if it's dead I'll have to keep it along with my "vintage" diamond speed star graphics card (Still in plastic wrap!) just for memories. The drive Is made by quantum and is called the BIGFOOT tx. It lives up to its name. This thing fits in a CD drive BAY! Maybe I'll TAKE a few pics and post 'em here just for kicks.Quantum Bigfoot hdds were fairly common tho' not very stable. There's some info here and lots more on the WWW.

Good luck

Solve : Graphic Card Lags! NeeD Help!! =(?

Answer»

Hye, These are my comp specs.
Pentium 4 3.0Ghz,
1Gb of RAM,
Graphic Card(256MB) ATI Radeon 9600PRO,
400w PSU,
Monitor Samsung SyncMaster795MB 17''
Processor Colling system: cooler master with a fan running at max 3660rpm at all time when it is suppose to be according to the comp temp.

Problem:- To the point, im a gammer. And I was never dissapointed with the graphic card i had until that very day. I play online games eg O2jam and now SDO which requires really really low requirements. The problem is, everything lags when i run 3d applications. It dosent lag when i run 3d apps on low detail. but it laggs on an online game like o2jam and sdo at high tex? I installed PC Alert4 and according to it, voltage isnt enough? question is.. is this the reason for me experiencing this lags? My friend had same spec with Geforce FX5200 and he dosent even lag.. its impossible for a geforce fx5200 to be better than an ati radeon 9600pro ...or my gr card is faulty? .. need help..thxWhat brand is your PS? A good brand, say Antec, 450 or 500 watt should help. I'm not an online gamer but it looks like your ram should be enough.Try a stress program such as Winstress or Prime95.sealbel i am using a CHEAP PS and i tried my friends 450W PS but the COMPUTER only runs when my SATA HardDisk is not connected.. If it is connected then the computer starts and immediately switches off after 2-3 secs. What does it means? and one more thing, if i bought a 500w PSU, will my graphic lagness problem be solved? Thank youA cheap 500 w PSU is about as effective as a cheap 350 w. There is no SENSE in sacrificing good components for an inferior PSU. Most PEOPLE don't realize how important that is to any system. If you don't spend at least $50 it is definitely a low end PSU. Yeah,
what GX1_Man said.
My card had a lot of lag when playing some games. I upgraded to a Antec 400w, (left over from my old computer) and solved most of my problems. I think a larger PSU would have taken care of all of them. When this one goes I'll get a bigger one.Guys thanks alot. Ill give it a try..ill head downtown this weekend. anyway.. any other recomendations on helping my com run on its fullest potential? and besides Antec what other recommended PSU brands should i get?
thx =)I am very fond of Zalman because they build silent Power Supply Units. They get good reviews and are of very decent quality.PC power and cooling sell top of the line models also...

PC power and cooling sell top of the line models also...

My new one is a Zalman 550. Needless to say i'm real happy with it.

Oh I didn't know that! How much did your Zalman 550 cost ? and the other brands? =)Visit the site...i can't tell you what it cost me due to the Patriot act...Why's that, Patio?

I paid € 89,- for my Zalman ZM460B-APS (ATX2.2)

Which would be converted to $ 113.404.-

I allready own a ZM400B-APS ( ATX12V ver 1.3) but I have an ATX 2.2 mainboard and I recently heard that using a 20 pins PSU with a 24 pins connector (Without using a converter) might damage your components. So I figured I'd play it safe and order a new PSU since I also thought the +12.0V rail was a bit low . 11.58V, although it increases under stress and is still within acceptable levels according to the PSU's specs so I'm not too worried about that. Solve : Re: 3 problems, 1 pc.?

I baught a couple of components a while ago, and installed it in my little brother's pc. (which i stole) Everything was running fine, exept that the FDD isn't reconized anymore. It IS installed in the BIOS, but it just won't appear in windows and at starting up the LED lights up all the TIME, and it won't go off. No start-up floppies work in it, since it doesn't read them at all!

I'd say it's not properly connected.

Quote
like always, im trying to get my cool 730.6 MB HDD installed on a pc. now, I GOT A PC WHICH CAN HANDLE IT OMFG.
in the BIOS it can be easily reconized like it should, and the pc is starting up too. The problem now is, while starting up it GIVES the failure: "NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND. PLEASE INSERT AN OTHER DISK." since the floppy disk isn't reconized, i can't do anything while im sure there is an operating system installe on the drive.

Are you sure you're booting from it... If the BIOS doesn't support the HDD, you'll undoubtedly get some strange results.

Quote
now, i tried to install the old HDD as a second drive, but now the whole pc won't startup at all! it only lights his leds, and the monitor gets no signal. Can this happen becouse there is a heavy-powered burner installed so the hdd's doesn't get enough power?

Solve : power supply fan killing me?

Answer»

:-? :-?here's the deal, firstly i'm probably the dumbest person on this forum. computer shut down in the middle of burning a cd . tells me hardware manager has FOUND a problem go to power set up for more details. went into setup power hardware tab ,power fan is turning 1300 rpm and is colored red. this tells me that the fan is dying, no problem i go get a new one. before i pulled it apart i thought i would check it one more time, this time power fan READS NA. so now i'm sure the fan is gone,INSTALL new fan ,same deal power fan is NA.what did i do wrong, and where do i go from here. thanx for your helpare you talking the PS fan? If so, just go buy a new one, PS components are very tricky and one more point of advise, dont mess with it. They can hold ENOUGH of a charge while unplugged to stop your heart.replaced fan but the power hardware screen does not read that it is running it still says that it is NA,but the fan is runningI think he was suggesting that you replace the whole power supply, not just the fan.Well...... Messing with t he PS is a bad idea. My guess is that a sensor is simply malfunctioning but who knows. Check the voltages and if all checks out then all is probably fine but.... messing with the power supply is RISKING frying your computer and zapping yourself. You can buy a voltage tester for usually 5 -10$, if it were me Id spend 60 on a PSone more thing, A hot PS could start a fire.... buy a new oneI think the Power fan is not the PSU fan, unless you have a PSU that can register the speed of its fans. Which I doubt. What brand is it?

It is most likely the fan located underneath the PSU sucking air out.

Solve : Motherboard Won't Detect CD-Drive and Harddrive.?

Answer»

I just got a new Hard-drive to install into my computer. This is the FIRST time I've ever had this kind of problem. My motherboard runs the CD-drive and the Harddrive FINE by them selves. But as soon as I plug in either with an IDE cable or power cable niether of hte devices work properly. The jumpers are most LIKELY not set to Master/Slave.

Make the HDD Master and the CD-ROM Slave. Instructions are printed on top of the HDD and CD-ROM.

Or run them both as Master on separate IDE channels for BEST RESULTS. Doubt you'd notice an performance hit. I know I didn't.

Hey people, I've had a couple of arrangements regarding to the computer problem and seemingly upgrading my current PC will be useless and pointless, hence, I've received an offer for a new computer, I would like to consult with you people about this offer which I will write down below, any comments about it will be welcomed.

I will seemingly be purchasing, or at least I hope I will find, a Geforce 7900 elsewhere, due to the fact I suspect I'll find the same card in a cheaper price than the price they've offered for it. (SUGGESTIONS for other graphic cards, or recommended PRICES, will also be embrased.)Two things that would halt me from purchasing that computer are:

QUOTE

80GB 7200RPM Quiet Seek Serial ATA 2

Far too small for the money you're spending 200 gigs minimal?

Quote
CD-ROM Drive

Where's the CD/DVD-RW?

I assume it doesn't come with a mouse, nor keyboard, nor monitor.

For the same price you could probably get a bigger HDD and a CD-DVD/RW at a different store.

Everything Raptor said ( 250+ gig HD if possible) and , be aware that the Pentium D "runs hot" , get good cooling options on that and the price seems a little high compared to building yourself or even getting more on the bare bones side to purchase*.

Any thoughts as to why this is happening or is the RAM the problem?Incompatible RAM. Go here:

Track down your motherboard and GET the proper RAM

Alan <>< You didn't force the RAM into the slot, did you? Because that mainboard is capable of both DDR 1 and DDR 2 and I know of someone who ACTUALLY managed to force DDR1 into a DDR 2 slot.. Well, I Fixed the beeping issue but on load up says

"reboot and select proper Boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key"

This is a new motherboard that I hooked up with old hard drives, do I need to set I the drive in bios as master boot so that the mb recognizes it as the boot device? Is it set to boot off the HDD with the OS on it?

You'll have to reinstall Windows, though, might as well boot directly off the CD.

The BIOS should be set to auto-detect all IDE/SATA devices. All fixed, thanks for the help!Come back anytime.

Solve : 3-button mouse problem?

Answer»

I have a new problem to report. I had recently GOT a Logitech 3-button PS/2 mouse in the mail (the classic one), and although I'm able to get it to work flawlessly (The pointer moves fine, and all three buttons work), I'm having PROBLEMS with one of my games. I'm using it with Doom for WINDOWS 95. For some reason, although the primary and secondary (left and right) buttons work as they should, the middle button doesn't respond when it isn't assigned to something in the control panel. I've tried going to Doom for Windows 95's frontend, and set the middle button to activate strafe mode, but in the game, even if I do that, it does nothing. Strangely, if I make the middle button do the same thing as the shift KEY (via the control panel), it activates speed mode in the game. I INSTALLED the Logitech mouse driver, so something is up. The operating system I am using is Windows 95.

re: dma issue: sometimes a motherboard failure, but could be a failure related to an expansion card that uses DMA and may be faulty or misconfigured.

could be bios trouble like you say, try changing battery & flash your bios to latest version, (back it up first thought)

steveThanks, Steve. I suppose it's a BIOS issue because I can't even enter it at the moment.

Problem is, it's not the type of BIOS I'm used to. It is a diagnostic PARTITION with BIOS that you have to reformat and install. Guess that'll take some experimentingHi
Sounds like a simillar system to Dell's.
The partition is a small area of the HDD set aside for suspend and hybernate info, not for bios info as such.

I don't think you need to re-format this area, indeed a colleague of mine did and had a lot of trouble getting it to work properly.
I'm pretty sure you can just flash the bios only.
generally you just boot from a floppy or download an .exe file from compaq's website.

steveMuch OBLIGED, I'll have a look see soon.

so meaning better i only install AGP 4X?

correct me if im wrong....

one more thing, i dont understand AGP 4x (sorry im noob in this thing)
any other name? The videocard you can install is called AGP videocard.

The 4x and 8x indicate the speed of the AGP slot. You have an 4x AGP slot, but you can install an 8x AGP videocard because the videocard will match the speed of the slot.

4x CARDS are no longer for sale, you can still obtain an 8x card, though. Just don't spend too much on it. Even the cheapest AGP card you can find will be a good improvement over what you currently have.Quote

Solve : Boot failure?

Answer»

Hi

The problem is that when I turn on the computer it is unable to boot even as far as bios. The fans come one (including CPU fan), it seems to be trying to talk to the CD drives. The boot process does not get started, it does not get into bios and nothing is displayed on the monitor. I do not think it could be the video as there is normally a beep shortly into the regular boot which does not happen either.

I suspect the problem has to be with the motherboard, but optimistically I'm hoping this major failure is something simpler than that. I can't easily switch out the mboard.

CPU: AMD Sempron 3100+ overclocked from 1.8 to 1.99ghz.
MBoard: ASRock Combo-Z [using socket 754] [Uli 1689 chipset]
Graphics: Leadtech/Nvidia 64mb somethingerother
1 stick of 512mb ram
WinXPsp2

What chance is there that replacing the battery could make all the difference? Surely that shouldn't affect bios booting up. (Obviously, I have tried and can't boot to a live linux CD). It is WinXP, and I have had periodical blue screens of death (every few days) while playing online games. The "prevent damage to computer" message maybe didn't succeed... I don't know.

Help! THANKS in advance!

~NickQuote

This is the cause of numerous PC problems where lights and fans are operating but it won't boot. This occurs because the power good signal is not received.

When the power supply first starts up, it takes some time for the components to get "up to speed" and start generating the proper DC voltages that the computer needs to operate. Before this time, if the computer were allowed to try to boot up, strange results could occur since the power might not be at the right voltage. It can take a half-second or longer for the power to stabilize, and this is an eternity to a processor that can run half a billion instructions per second! To prevent the computer from starting up prematurely, the power supply puts out a signal to the motherboard called "Power Good" (or "PowerGood", or "Power OK", or "PWR OK" and so on) after it completes its internal TESTS and determines that the power is ready for use. Until this signal is sent, the motherboard will refuse to start up the computer.

In addition, the power supply will turn off the Power Good signal if a power SURGE or glitch causes it to malfunction. It will then turn the signal back on when the power is OK again, which will reset the computer. If you've ever had a brownout where the lights flicker off for a split-second and the computer seems to keep running but resets itself, that's probably what happened. Sometimes a power supply may shut down and seem "blown" after a power problem but will reset itself if the power is turned off for 15 seconds and then turned back on.
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/index.cfm?a=wiki&tag=power_good_signalThank you! I haven't got a solution yet - still tinkering with things that feed and take power from the supply. It is (or at least was) a decent Aopen supply, I don't remember the exact numbers, but changing that is less agony than the Mboard.Quote

From what you have told me, I think so as well. But try the following none the less:

 • Reset CMOS
 • Test the motherboard with other hardware components (PSU, processor, etc)

Hi again,

Just to let you know that the computer is functioning well an happily... [or almost - the keyboard seems to have dc'd and while it worked fine when the pc was lying open on the floor it's now kicking up a fuss...] BuT having decided the problem was most likely to be power supply (or at least that being the cheapest starting point) I bought a new one and installed it and now it is kicking along.

Thanks for your pointer - the faulty power supply was clearly the problem and it's all resolved now. If it hadn't been for your very astute pointer it WOULD have been weeks to get a solution.

Solve : warning about overclocking?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a PC desktop that RUNS 24/7. It's never given me any problems before. Just a few hours ago, i accidentally found out that it's FREEZING. i don't know how LONG it's been in that state for. Anyway, the whole screen is blank. I got panicked so i turned it off by force. As soon as it got re-started, a warning message pop up saying "Overclocking failed! Please enter setup to re-configure your system. Press F1 to run setup, Press F2 to load default values and continue". I didn't know what to do so i picked on F2 to continue loading windows OS. It came out during the startup.

Now, it's back online. everything seems to be fine. but i don't want something like this to happen again.

Could anyone be kind to tell me what's going on here? I don't remember if it'
s been overclocked or not. All i know is the machine's been there just before i took charge of it.

Thank you in advanceQuote

got panicked so i turned it off by force

:-?

Scan for VIRUSES and Spyware.Apparently, a setting in your CMOS Setup panel got changed, perhaps before the freezing occurred, or when you forced the shutdown. The CMOS Setup panel is where you change settings in your BIOS. Your computer's BIOS probably has various settings for CPU speed or "frequency", and it somehow got changed to a faster speed than appropriate for your specific processor. Thus, the overclocking message.

Since you selected Default settings and it's running fine now, you should be OK. However, if this happens again and becomes a recurring problem, come back to the forum for further discussion of the issue.

Solve : Notebook's widescreen monitor not working...?

Answer»

I just got a refurbished Gateway notebook running Windows XP Home. It has a widescreen monitor. But the display isn't widescreen, it's just normal-sized (there's big blank space on the right that's not being used). In the display properties thing, there are only two options for screen resolution -- 1024 X 786 and 800 X 600. So I went to Gateway's chat support. The support guy said that the problem is my video device can only handle up to 1024 X 786, and and that if I want to use my widescreen monitor, I'll need to upgrade my video device. Now, I like computers and all but I have NO IDEA what that means. Support guy says I have to contact my retailer for more info on that, but my retailer (globalcomputers.com) doesn't do tech support. So before I THROW in the towel and ship this back to Global, do any of you kind folks here have ideas???You could try updating the video drivers from the manufacturer's website, they MAY give you more resolutions to choose from.Quote

Solve : Computer Monitor picture turned green!?

Answer»

While I was using my computer, the monitor color suddenly turned green. I could still see everything but it was all in green. A little while later it suddenly went back to normal. The next day the same thing happened but this time it didn't go back to normal. The monitor is pretty old. I hooked up a different monitor to the computer and it works fine. What I want to know is, is this a fixable problem? I don't know what to do with the monitor and I don't want to have to pay someone to take it away. If it is fixable then I can give it away to someone free. I'd also like to know for future reference in case this ever happens again. Any help is appreciated! Thanks!I would TRY degausing it. Has anything exuding MAGNETIC forces, such as speakers, been positioned closer to the monitor before this happened? If not, and if degausing does not help, I'd say the monitor is failing.

As far as disposing of it, inquire about recycling options in your area. A local computer organization in my area (central Ohio) has an annual drive to collect used computers and periperals. They ship the stuff to a prison where the components are broken down and certain metals extracted. How old is it? When one colour channel dies, there isn't anything you can do about it.The R, G, and B signals are carried separately on a typical RGB CONNECTION. So a failure in the connectors at EITHER end, or in the cable, can cause this problem. Also a failure in one of the guns in the monitor, or certain PROBLEMS with your graphics card can cause this.

Ensure connections are securely fastened. If this does not resolve the issue, try the monitor on a different PC, to eliminate either the monitor or the graphics card as the cause of the problem.

However when I removed the top of my SCANNER and hooked it up(cables are compatible) it didn't work PROPERLY with my scanner. I know the attachment was designed for the 1660 model scanner. Is there any way to adapt my 2580 scanner to accept the attachment? Is this a driver problem or is the cable wired differently for the 2 MODELS? Epson Tech support was not helpful on this issue.Thanks.Are they both USB?

I THINK it's a driver issue.

Install drivers BEFORE connecting USB devices and always make certain you have the correct drivers installed.

Solve : works 8.5?

Answer»

hi raptor, thx for the message. i tried AVERY standard which failed then i tried customising and measured each label and the spaces between but nothing worked i got print ACROSS two spaces. most IMPORTANT there was no way to select any one label other than to try and put the cursor into the one selected , that was difficult in itself but then trying to put the cursor into a position to start typing was another interesting CHALLENGE. i went to works web site but found no mention of works and labels and certainly no help. i spent some hours at this and wasted a lot of PAPER and never made any improvement. walter. Please post in the original thread, this is confusing.

Can you make a few screenshots of the printer settings and label settings in Works and post them here?

Solve : Ground wire?

Answer»

When I touch my case or even my screen I get a zap like putting your tongue on a 9v battery. I striped my case and looked at all the wires. Checked the BACK of the mobo. emptied out the powersupply and found nothing visual. any ideas before I start replacing. ThanksIs your outlet grounded?

I would really advise against licking items that contain chemical compounds.check around the hard drive area as well and maybe up front near the bottom of case, if u haven't found the culprit yet.Thraxis, it sounds like static electricity and it's probably building up in you.
Try going barefooted and REMOVE any synthetic CLOTHING, nylon, spandex, whatever./\

Solve : Keyboard Problems.........?

Answer» I received this Sony Vaio PCV-V200G (All-in-One) PC to fix.
The O/S "XP Home" had crashed and the owner stated that he couldn't get to the recovery partition to fix it so he just wanted it re-installed another way.
Well here COMES my problem............
I stick in my "XP Home Edition" CD and proceed to re-INSTALL and when I get to
the "Press Enter" to install part the keyboard doesn't work. I tried three!!
He NEVER gave me the original "wireless" keyboard that comes with this system
so I'm USING 3 spares I have lying around.
By the way, I come to find out the original O/S & "C" drive had been deleted or formated
before I got the system to fix.
Anyway, I need to find out if anyone knows how to get this or any other keyboards
to work??
I really need to get this system fixed bad and fast!!

Thanks,

Robqx4What type of connection do these keyboards have?

Can you access the BIOS?Hi Raptor,

No I can't access the BIOS because the keyboard doesn't work.

The keyboard connects by USB "only" NO PS2 ports on this compact Sony system!

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!It seems like you're going to have to borrow the GUY his keyboard.

Perhaps you need a special recovery disk to load keyboard drivers, did he give you any CD's that came with the PC?Funny, I remember seeing this topic on the other forum

Solve : Power Supply Keeps Blowing?

Answer»

Hi there everyone,

Iv'e got a problem with one of the workstations in our office, the PSU keeps blowing .
I don't think its got something to do with the wall outlet because everyone else seems fine and it is also running on clean power.

Computer Specs:
OS: Win98SE
CPU: Intel CELERON 733 MHz
M/Board: GigaByte GA-6WMMC7
PSU: CWT 235W ATX

NB: The PSU Blew 3 Times In One Month
Thanks alotVincent .... Were the replacement PSUs of good quality or just a cheapy ?

How long did each of the replacements last ?
The wattage of them DOESNT seem like a whole lot ......... perhaps try a higher wattage replacement ........ 350 or 400 watts.

DL65
Hi there DL65,

The replacment PSU's lasted for about 1-2weeks.
They are cheap PSU's, but surly i would expect them to last longer?
Also i had a look at the documentation and 235W should be more than enough...Or so they say?

Maybe i should get a DECENT 450w PSu

Thanks Dl65

NB: Please LET me know on what you thinkI would also carefully inspect the risers on that MBoard to eliminate the possibility that it is shorting out to the case and blowin those PSU's...Hi patio,

There definitely might have been a short.... I now (hopefully)fixed it. Only time will tell 8-), i'll keep you posted.

Thanks A Mill

Vincent yeah, my pc has a 380-watt. I can install anything on it (almost). I have two of these ready to be turned into servers

I re-installed windows xp sp2, after i reinstalled windows xp my hard drive only shows 15.9 GB of memory, before it showed a C drive with 15.9 GB and a D drive with 45GB of memeory. Did you have anything on that other part of the drive? How was it formatted?Well on the other part of the hard drive i had just regular files, videos and songs, and i think the hard drive was formatted as NFTS, im not sure, i dont think there is anything wrong with the hard drive, ANYWAY, i appreciate any advice you can give me.Quote

Other than it isn't working correctly?

Does the drive letter show at all in Windows and is not accessible? Or it is just not LISTED at all? What version of Windows? Can you see it in Disk Management?
tHE DRIVE LETTER DOES NOT APPEAR AT ALL ANYWHERE, I AM RUNNING WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK 2, AND I CANNOT SEE THE DRIVE IN DISK MANAGEMENT. THE ONLY INFO SHOWING UNDER C DRIVE IS CAPACITY 15.9GB, AND FILE SYSTEM NTFS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP.Make sure it is still enabled in the BIOS.There are two separate physical drives or two partitions on only ONE drive? Did you play with the cabling, etc.?problem solveddddddddd, all i had to do was to format the unpartitioned space on my hard drive, i went to control panel, switched to classic view, administrative tools, computer management, disk management, tghen i saw the unpartitioned space that was available, i right click that area and created a new partitoion and formatted it. it was easy, it took like 10 hours to format but now i have my disk space back, thanks for your help guys, i hope this info helps someone else. bye.Quote

I would have suggested that if you hadn't said this before:

ND I CANNOT SEE THE DRIVE IN DISK MANAGEMENT

You really have to be more specific next time.

By the way, taking 10 hours to format is a bit strange. Either the HDD is not properly configured or it's failing.Unless all the errors have made the drive revert to PIO mode but even at that i don't think it would take 10 hours...

Solve : Computer crashing problem?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I'm having issues with my computer, it starts up fine, but it'll rest/die every 30 minutes. THe computer does not shut off, as the power supply keeps on GOING and the fan does not turn off, the comptuer just suddenly dies and then reboots. This happened after i brought to a computer shop to install a 512mb RAM into my computer. Right after that, the computer would not start up, so i had them change the ram, and now, the computer keeps dying, and the computer only boots up when i have 512mb of ram installed, not 1gb as i wanted. I tried interchanging the rams, and it works with both rams, one at a time, but not both at the same time. The computer now just keeps dying. if you can help that'd be great! someone said it was because of a broken motherboard, but i wanted to see if it could be something else. THANK YOU

here's my specs of the computer
Emachines t6000
MSI 6741 (version 1) motherboard
512mb ram
400 watt power supply
128mb Sapphire Radeon 9600
Windows xp home sp2
AMD 64 3200+
thank you again

jeremyi believe i would have stolen GX1_Man's thunder by doing this but check out http://www.crucial.com/ to see if your RAM is compatible with your mobo.

also, take out the CMOS battery for about five minutes then put it back in (while comp is off). that should fix the rebooting problem. as i stated earlier, before ADDING the other stick of RAM FIND out if it is compatible.i just tried that and it doesn't work. i know both sticks of ram are compatible, but the computer will not turn on when both rams are inserted. The computer still dies every 30 minutes... even after i removed the battery for 5 minutes and reseted the bios

thanksIf the computer shop did all of the work then they should stand behind it. If both RAM work by themselves, but not together that sounds like the DEFINITION of incompatibility. Take it back to the shop.there is no emachine desktop model nummber T6000

But i did find all of the EMT6212-EMT6536

Not one of these machines has a maxiam ram under 2 gigs

meaning that it is not your mobo becasue some mobos can only handle so much ram

Every computer under or near your model nummber was 2-4 gigs, i would still reccomend talking to the store again and seeing what they think

Solve : Could this prob. be due to overheating??

Answer»

I just got this error message that said:

The system has recovered from a serious error. A log of this error has been created.

The Error Signature was: BCCode: 100000d1 BCP1: 00002000 BCP2: 000000FF BCP3: 00000000 BCP4: 00000000 OSVer: 5_1_2600 SP: 2_0 Product: 256_1

It said the files in the report in question were:
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERe083.dir00\Mini093006-01.dmp
C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERe083.dir00\sysdata.xml

Then when I sent the error, a website came up:
Hardware failure: replace failed component

Thank you for submitting an error report.

Problem description

The error was caused by an unrecoverable hardware error which forced the operating system to stop functioning.

Although we know the problem is caused by a hardware component, unfortunately the error report does not contain enough information to tell us the specific component. More than likely the problem is being caused by problems with one or more of the following computer components:

Random ACCESS Memory (RAM)
System board
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
POWER supply

Recommendations
If you have received this error more than once, it could indicate a serious problem with your computer. We recommend that you do the following:

Back up your files to avoid data loss in case of a complete hardware failure.
Contact the original manufacturer of your computer or your local computer repair shop. Either will have advanced hardware diagnostics to DETERMINE the specific component which is failing.

I've only got this error once. Could this possibly be DUE to overheating because over summer I live with my parents and I put my computer in this desk. There is a little cubby where you're supposed to put the computer (as the back has the precut wire holes), but I've always thought it was stupid because the inside of the cubby gets hot... I did leave the door open at all times at least... I thought it might be okay over summer cuz I was gonna move soon anyways. When I used it the (is it a big fan or does the one just get faster? When it makes the whirring fan sound...) fan did operate a lot more, but it never shut off or anything. Now that I'm back at school (I put it on top of my desk... where the air comes in is on the right side and the air goes out of the left side... its really perforated a lot on the left side... but I feel almost nothing from either side when the fan isn't whirring.) it seems to be acting funny.

I did get my first BSOD for this computer yesterday (I've had it for nearly 2 years) but then I thought it was due to the fact I've got two virus scanners dled (On a past computer I had a problem with virus scanner conflicts)... I just got rid of one. And I got no problems... I've also been dling unlicensed (as in unlicensed by companies in the US) fansubs off of bittorrent (which my friends also do but they have no problems) and so far the fan has been working wierd. Now the fan turns on in predictable intervals. Probably something like every 30 min to 1 hour it turns on for about 10 minutes then shuts off.Oops, pressing enter made that submit...

Also its been a bit slow but I thought that was because bittorrent was taking up RAM.

So bottom line is, should I take this to the dreaded school computer shop (I paid them 50 bucks last time and they didn't fix my computer, though they said they did ) and do that hardware scan or is it nothing?

I have an HP Media Center PC m1070n computer by the way with Windows XP (Pack 2).
It's 2.80GHz, Intel Pentum 4, 512MB of RAM and something like 150 GB.Oh also, a few days ago I just virus/spyware scanned it with a whole host of programs and they were all clean (except for a few cookies, etc.).Sounds like a heat problem. If you have room on the desktop, thats where the computer should be.A couple of things stand out to me.

1) You have moved the computer from parent home to school, check it for loose cards & plugs etc.
2) What are fansubs? If it's some sort of downloaded fan software to control the fans then remove it.
Forget 2) Google is my friend.

Solve : 83C Graphics card should i be concerned?

Answer»

So my graphics card was running at 94C and i stuck a VGA coller under it and that droped it to 84 C
its an X850 PRO and im wondering how i can drop the temp
The computer runs fine and the envirment is an avrage 54C
so i really only need to cool the GPU and i was wondering what you all reccomend
i have already but mem collers on it and that helps and i have 4 case fans 3 can go up to 4800 RPM and one is about 2700 (i keep them all about 2-3000 reduce sound)

Question two i dont have much experience with sound cards, how bad is it i have the graphics card the a VGA cooler that takes two PCI slots THEN the sound card all meshed together ...the exit point of some of the heat is right on top of the sound card...should i be very concerned

Thank you80c+ is very bad. At 94c u shouldnt turn it on.

Buy a VF900 for 20$ and install it. Undo any overclock that u have done.hrm...you think the VF900 will drop it over 20C???

i would have to move the VGA cooler out of the systemdoes it even work for an x850?Quote

does it even work for an x850?

It shouls work for every modern graphics card, especially a high-end one.

Check out Zalman's site to be sure though. And if it cant give u a workable TEMPERATURE, u should throw away the card, because there is nothing u can do.. This does seem wierd though, how can the card get to 90c?? Are u sure u arent overclocking?positive

i would show pics but i dont want to go back to that i did some re-aranging in my case and i think im droping the temp more

its down to atleat 77C now but im trying to get it lower i will tell you soon

P.S. i looked on there site i couldnt find my card listedsweet so i got it down to less than 70C at maxiaum load

i made my front fan push air out after TAKING my Graphics card out and reliazing it was not sucking air in through those rivits i swa it was blowing out
i ALSO reversed two other fans and now my entire rig is MUCH cooler

thanks for your help all

but M2TW (greatist game ever)The generally recommended fan configuration has the front fan(s) pulling air into the case and the back fans exhausting air out of the case. Seems like you've got your fans installed the opposite of this. Which direction are your rear fans blowing? Quote

70c will ware down ur card slowly but steadily. If u want to keep it for longer, buy the VF900.

M2TW is good, but nothing can compare to FFVII for the Playstation.
FFVII is good i own it its been an amazing month of gaming
1. M2TW
2. FFVII
3. Socom Combined Assult
4. BF 2142 (last month)
5. DOW: Dark Crusade (last month)

oh YEA and i used to have it so the front fan was pulling air in and the back was pushing air out But right not it was stayed under 70C for quite some time....if i switch the front one to pull air in again it temp will drop more beacuse before i had my front fan hooked up to my Powersupply on the fan only line. Which i found out later makes it so the fan is supposed to keep quite but kicks up when it gets hot....but this feature did not include Graphic card temp. So i will have the fan sucking air in soon and all of the back blowing out except for one, i was thinking having one in the back sucking in and one out would be best. Also i have a fan on the side of the case about half way up i was going to make that bring air out beacuse heat rises.

Well thanks again all i am very happy with my new temps but i believe i can get them lower so i will fiddle with them, of one more thing, how do you all check air flow??? i have herd of many people just blowing smoke into there comp but i dont smoke nor do i want smoke in my comp. There anything cheap i can just blow in there to check for hot pockets?
