Solve : "fuzzy" monitor display/resolution?

Answer»

Thanks for reading this and I hope you can help me. I have a Micron TransPort trek2 laptop, USING windows 2000 proffesional, and ever since I got it (bought it off of ebay) the MONITOR display is horrible. I have gone to windows and microsoft and updated everything hoping that would take care of the poor RESOLUTION issues but no luck!! Now here's the wierd thing, when I first start it up and the Micron LOGO comes on the screen it's as clear as a whistle, but as soon as it gets to windows all the letters/icons/displays are "fuzzy" I guess is the best way to describe it. Can someone PLEASE help me?

Thanks in advance :-?Set the resolution to EITHER 1024x786 or 1280x1024, depending on what the native resolution of the screen is.Thanks for all the help. I was able to figure it out, I needed to download a driver and install it.

Solve : xp recovery console failure?

Answer»

i recently purchased a new Dell:

Core 2 Duo with Viiv, 1.66Ghz, 1024Mb RAM, XP Media Centre Edition 2005

I booted it and was faced with a screen saying "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME". I LOADED up the XP Recovery Disk from the boot menu. I had been faced with this problem before, and presuming the boot.ini file was corrupt again, i was planning to run the system recovery function on the disk, and either create a new boot partition or run CHKDSK. This has fixed the problem EVERY time in the past. I selected the recovery console option (as opposed to setting up XP fresh). However where as usually a command line screen loads up and from there i can run CHKDSK to fix the problem ETC. it has not loaded up this time. I have tried over half a dozen times, left it for hours, but it simply claims it is examining the disk and the command line screen DOES NOT appear as it usually does. Without this, i can not repair my current problem, or even reinstall fresh.

any help would be much appreciated. Could it be that the boot.ini file is fine but it is another problem that CHKDSK wont fix anyway?

many thanks

Contact Dell immediately and have them replace you system. The "recently purchased" should be a red flag to you. A "new' system right out of the box should not give you error messages. If you don't GET this resolved NOW you'll regret it later with all the hassle and fiddling just to get it to work.

And are you also aware that some vid cards do not like each other and won't run side by side ? ?

patio. 8-)I know this sounds like a weird question but I'll ask it again, does it do it in both single PLAYER and multiplayer? did you add a new router or anything else outside the computer? The fact that it does it only in 3d applications sounds like it may be a problem with the ram on the video card and if it only does it in multiplayer it could be a router problem, however it should not crash the computer but it could. Again run a 3d benchmark for an hour and see what happens. All the system diagnostics reports in the world wont help if its a HARDWARE problem, try to isolate when and how it happens. Trying another vid card would be an awsome way to see if it was hardware related. If you dont have one try rolling back the drivers if you have not already.ant got anthor video card to use lol but yeah i think it is a hardware i'm trying defraging and that ram test then i'm ganna try benchmark but if all thos fail i'll have to buy a new video card

Read Fed's note and see it your components are even compatible. IF they are, and only if they are then proceed:

Strip the machine to basics, motherboard, CPU/fan, 1 stick of memory and one videocard with the PSU. Go into BIOS and set to safe mode.

Does it work? If so, then and a hard drive and install Windows. If that works, introduce only ONE variable at a time until it fails. Then you will have your guilty party. Change only ONE BIOS setting at a time, reboot and use it a bit to see it it continues to function.

When you sla,m all the pieces together and it doesn't work, it can be difficult to find the problem.

Do the drill exacly as above and post back. This thread is going on WAAAAAY too long.

Solve : USB printers fail after installing USB PCI c?

Answer»

New USB PCI CARD installed and works fine with all hardware (thumb drive, scanner, camera, portable drive) but it will not work with any of 3 printers. When I install a printer it may work, but only until re-booting. After that, windows "finds new hardware" and installs a 2nd copy of the printer, but then none of them will connect. I get a "Device not connected" message in the properties/port.

The irq is being shared with my onboard sound card and a PCI modem. I know this can cause problems but with the other hardware working fine I havent' attempted to change these settings. I did remove my Com 1 and Com 2 and LPT ports from the BIOS while troublshooting this, but windows assigned a couple of the USB CONTROLLERS to those irq's.

As of now, each time I reboot Windows finds new hardware (the printers) that have already been installed, installs them again, and in the printer properties, the USB port for each printer says Device not Connected, even tho one of them is.

Before I was using on-board USB 1.1 which I disabled in the BIOS. I did this after the problem was apparent.

Current setup:
Win98SE
Athlon XP with K7S5A
American Megatrends BIOS 2001

Any suggestions??

Thanks,
John

What happens if you enable the 1.1 USB in the BIOS & plug one of your printers in there?

Alan <><

Thanks for the reply Alan - but problem is solved.

Along your thought lines, I had been connecting via a hub. I uninstalled all USB drivers, software and components, then reinstalled the Card, and installed the mian printer, connected directly to the pci card. Seemed to work OK. Then 2 more printers, and still OK. Then all the other USB hardware, no problem. Turns out the hub, which is made by Targus, is made for laptops, and thus has a "Y" cable with TWO Type A connectors - one is for data + power (normal) and the other is just power. Having had them both connected to my onboard usb for several years I had forgotten all about how they worked. WELL for some reason the pci card didn't cooperate like the old onboard USB when both were connected.

I just don't know why it only affected the printers and not the other hardware. Probably had to do with messing up the printer port addresses.

If anybody has problems with USB I suggest checking out www.usbman.com (and posting the question here of course)

They have a ton of helpful info and links (for those not running XP) and got me GOING in the right direction. Especiallly interesting was learning how to clean up Device Manager in Safe Mode. Amazing all the old junk and duplicate stuff I found installed!

Thanks again,
John

Solve : cd+g format?

Answer»

I have a lap top with everything but the kitchen sink, (so I thought) but it will not read cd+g as in the popular kareoke disks, it will play the sound but will not show the graphics, even though i have a cd-r and a dvd-r drive, do i NEED any more hardware or is it a matter of having the right software.

I hope someone has the answer. As far as i know karaoke CD's are encrypted to prevent unlawful copyright breaking COPIES ....

Sorry.

patio. 8-)What the HECK is CD + G? :-?A CD+G (also known as CD+Graphics) is a special audio compact disc that contains graphics data in addition to the audio data on the disc. The disc can be played on a regular audio CD player, but when played on a special CD+G player, can output a graphics signal (typically, the CD+G player is hooked up to a television set or a computer monitor); these graphics are almost exclusively used to display lyrics on a television set for karaoke performers to sing along with.

In each sector there are 2352 bytes (24 * 98) of audio content data and 96 bytes of subchannel data.

The 96 bytes of subchannel information in each sector contain four packets of 24 bytes apiece :

1 byte for command, 1 byte for instruction, 2 bytes for parityQ, 16 bytes for data, and 4 bytes parityP.

Each of the 96 subchannel data bytes can be thought of as being divided into 8 bits. Each of these bits corresponds to a separate stream of information. These streams are called "channels", and are labeled starting with the letter P, like so:
Channel P Q R S T U V W
Bit 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 0

Both the P and Q channels on a regular audio CD are used for timing information. They are used to assist the CD player in tracking the current location on the disc, and to provide the timing information for the time display on the CD player. Note that same space is used for CD-TEXT as well.

Channel Q is used for control purposes of more sophisticated players. It contains position information the Media Catalog Number (MCN), and International Standard Recording Code (ISRC). The ISRC is used by the media industry, and contains information about the country of ORIGIN, the year of publication, owner of the rights, as well as a serial number, and some additional tags:

Data
This track contains Data (rather than audio). Can be used for muting in audio CD Players.

SCMS Flag
Used by the Serial Copy Management System to indicate permission to digitally copy the track.

Four-Channel Audio
The track uses four channel audio. Used very rarely on Compact Discs.Alright, Thanks.

Solve : connecting laptop to TV?

Answer»

I BOUGHT an s-video cable to connect my laptop to my TV. I can see EVERYTHING properly until I try to WATCH a DVD. When it starts to play it I can see everything on the laptop screen but on the TV the part of the screen where the movie is supposed to be is black. I can STILL see the play, pause, stop, rewind buttons. The laptop is HP pavilion and the video card is ATI Radeon IGP 64 MB. I am using 1024X768X32 60 hz or 800X600X32 60 hz. The TV is an Sony Trinitron. I also got the same thing on a Sharp TVAll of my stuff does the same thing. I figure it is part of some sort of COPYRIGHT infringement law. I guess they figure if we did that with a DVD, we would record it.

Solve : SD card problem(cannot delete photos)?

Answer»

I have an 128Mb SD card, My sister borrowed it from me to USE as a backup for his DIGITAL camera. when returned it to me I cannot delete the photos inside it. I can open it for viewing but i cannot delete them, she already replaced it with a new SD and did not bother to get the card in question, what i want to know is , is my SD card permently damaged? I already tried fomatting and erasing the file by a PC card reader but did not work. any advice? it would be nice if i could retun the new card my sister bought as replacement I know she needs it. HELP i need some adviceHave you tried formatting the card in your camera?yea soybean already tried that but the photos are still there and can't be deleted......I don't have a card reader. If I understand you correctly, you tried to format two ways, in the card reader and in your camera, and neither way works. Do you have a USB cable to connect your camera directly to your computer? If so, you could try formatting from your computer. To do this, connect the camera to your computer, open My Computer, where you should see the camera under Devices with Removable Storage, right click on it and select Format.

My camera manual advises not to format this way but, in your case, I would try it. If it works, then I would try formatting again with your camera so that your camera can apply certain formatting characteristics to a camera memory card that Windows formatting will not apply. The more I think about this, I don't know whether formatting via direct connection to your computer by USB cable would be any different than formatting in a card reader. But, might be worth try. Most cameras have a "write protect feature" to prevent accidentally erasing photos...is this feature enabled on that disk ? ?soybean: IM scared of trying your suggestion , this might damage my camera or affect the internal memory, im still contemplating on trying it.

Patio: the SD's physical lock switch is at the "open" position. My camera is a KODAK easyshare camera series and my sister's kamera is nikon 100 I think?I'm not talking about the physical lock switch ...it's a software issue within the camera itself.
When you view the pictures in Windows or the camera itself protected pictures will have a slash mark at the bottom right corner or some other symbol if they are write protected.patio: I know what you mean, no such marks! picture is viewed as normal by the camera screen.....I tried deleting and copying Jpeg images on the sd card using a card reader, it seemed to work at first; old Photos are deleted and new photo files are added. but when i remove the sd card from the reader then return it and reopen it the old picture is back and the new photo files disappear :-( , same result when I open the sd card on the digital camera....:-(.....I was thinking could it be the cryptographic feature of the the SD card (wich I hear and read so much about) has something to do with it? how do you ACTIVATE the cryptographic feature of an sd card?.....can it be de-activated?.....or it can be something else......its such a waste to trow a 128mb SD card in the garbage can......I just thought of something...since the photos that won't delete were from sis's camera how bout trying to use her camera to format the card ? ?
Sounds wierd i know but i've seen stranger.

Normally a format is a format period.Cameras read memory cards differently than other cameras. I once put my memory card into an old camera I had, and it only showed pictures that were on there from a long time ago that I didn't know I had anymore.

Hoop2077hoop2077........a really spooky comment.....anyway, im still waiting for other ideas....Quote

Solve : Cd's (usually blank) not recognized?

Answer»

I did a search and could not find this problem, but it seems to me that it can't be all that rare.

When trying to burn cd's in my recording drive, I am getting messages to insert a blank recordable media device. When I go to "my computer" to check the properties, it isn't seeing the cd either. I have tried other BLANKS.

I am using windows xp, the cd drive is lite-on LTR-24102M, and the device manager says it is working properly. I am using Sony CD-R Audio cd's. It was working sporatically for a while, but nothing today. I can play audio cd's that I burned (memorex), but put in one with photos (memorex) and nothing there either. Tried a TDK that has photos, and that one worked.

Can anyone help?? Thank you!!What program are you using to burn ? ?I am using a trial of "audio cd maker" But it doesn't only happen with that program. I was having that problem, a lot.

I got hold of the HP service line and the rep there walked me through using RecordNow. Even though the computer doesn't recognize the drive, going to either RecordNow or Nero and indicating the drive allows me to transfer data.

I find that I have to set the software to allow multiple recording sessions or the disk is locked thereafter. An RW disk can be erased, but a plain R drive is forever committed unless you allow multi-session.

All this allows me to put data on discs. Considerably different from simply addressing a drive, but it works for me.DLoad and install CDBurnerXPro...free.

Any better results ? ?Thank you both for your responses. I do appreciate it. Before I download and try yet another program, should I delete any I have on here already to avoid conflicts? I have the Roxio basic that came on my computer, and I have tried Acoustica MP3 Burner, MP3 Audio CD Burner, and Audio CD Maker. I just want a simple program that will burn cd's in both formats. (MP3 & regular audio) so that I can save some podcast LECTURES that are in MP3 format. I don't need anything fancy.

You know, I am wondering if the problem is partly the Sony CD's I found an Imation CD put it in the drive, and up came the "what do you want to do?" box. I took that out, put the Sony in, and nothing.

Thanks again!!!Whenever i install a new burner i ask all my friends for a blank media disk or buy one from them and test them all with a mixed media collection of songs, data and video...

This prevents that dissappointing feeling after buying a 100 pak of blanks i can't use.

By all means try some other brands of media. Thanks again. Lesson learned. Fortunately it's only a 20 pack.Quote

Thanks again. Lesson learned. Fortunately it's only a 20 pack.

Giftwrap and give it away for Christmas !You have to look at the specs for your drive and buy the appropriate disks. I chose to buy an all-purpose second drive. Works really well.

I have had trouble with Roxio, and I ended up by removing the program (actually I re-formatted the hard drive, just to get it entirely off my computer, which tells you how strongly I felt). Not only because Roxio formats your disks so they may not be readable by other programs, and I think that was my original problem, but also because they REFUSED to regognize my rebate application. For a measly fifty bucks, they have made an enemy for life.

Your whole problem could be related to the Roxio bit. I use the software that came with the computer, Record Now by Sonic, and also the software that came with the drive, Nero. If your needs are minimal, SOMETHING of this ORDER would be all you need. Both are sort of bare bones, and they include opportunity to by the full program. If I were heavy into audio or video, a fuller program might be appropriate but I get along trouble-free this way.Thank you.

I am pleasantly surprised at how helpful people are at this website. I ran into it looking for some ideas as to what my problem is. For just joining, I am impressed at how friendly you are to us newbies. I will pass it along to others too.

Solve : can't get printer to print wirelessly?

Answer»

HI,
I just bought a HP5080 and have it up and running on my desktop upstairs. I have spent the LAST SEVERAL hours TRYING to get it to do the same wirelessly from my laptop down stairs with no happiness. I have set up a Linksys WRT54G router conected to the printer via an Eathernet cable to one of the outputs on the router. My desktop shows that it is talking to the router just fine and the computer seems to have found the printer as it went through the installation okay. I checked the printer on the laptop and it says it is on and ready. I have shutdown and restarted several times as sometimes that works.

I am using a Compaq Presario LT and it has XP HOME addition.

Is there a IP address for the printer. Oh, by the way, I am not using a network as all I want is to be able to send print jobs directly to the printer without going thru the desktop computer which prints nicely thru its USB connection.

Any ideas as to what I am overlooking will be greatly appreciated.

Solve : Connection from Computer to TV?

How would I do this? What TYPE of cord or cable will I need to buy?I have a Dell Insiron 1000. According to it's specifications I have a SiSM650 Integrated GraphicsWhat OUTPUTS do you have from your graphics card?I am sure only a 15 pin VGA port.

That is a low end system with onboard video. Great for a lot of things, but not this. You could also consider an FM TRANSMITTER. Plug that into your headphones jack and it will broadcast the sound to a radio frequency. I'm not sure what that jack is called, but you can also buy a cable that will convert the microphone jack into an rca jack.

Good luck!

Solve : Computer Turns on, won't boot?

Answer»

Since I've built my computer, booting up never seems to work right. Ive cleared the Cmos several times on the MB, followed the manual, etc. Lately, I have found a method that works for turning it on.

I power up, get the 'no link' message on the monitor like always. I let the computer run for about 2 minutes. Then i turn the computer off and turn it back on before the fans on the case stop spinning and hold delete. This seems to work.... I have installed Windows XP, many programs, everything seems to be working flawlessly except for the boot process.

However, this can't be a good thing for the cpu or the system in general. What is the PROBLEM here? I've heard it might be the MB BATTERY?

Enermax 550 watt PSU
2x GeForce 7600 GT
Western Digital Caviar HD 320GB
Corsair MEM 2GB, 2X1GB
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (socket 939)
Windows XP (without SP2)

First off, any ideas as to what the problem is before I strip down my system to the essentials and then add stuff untill the problem occurs? Is there really going to be a problem if i continue to boot up like that or can I get by?

Well the battery is certainly the cheapest/easiest solution if that's the trouble so try that first...

Following that if it does not improve run the HDD diagnostics on that HDD from WD.

Still no good ? Test that RAM using MemTest...let it run for awhile. Any ERRORS at all mean bad RAM, replace it.

Still no joy ? Try swapping out that Vid card with a known working one in good shape.

If all this does not help get back to us...

Solve : DVD Drive won't open after Burning?

Answer»

I just bought a sony Dual Layer DVD Rewriter and after I burn an ISO using DVD deycripter, the dvd tray will not open. I have to turn the computer off and restart it to get dvd tray to open.

I have two DVD Rewrtiers installed in my computer and they are both set to the far left one (Not Master and not slave, but the far left one). The one DVD Drive is the same drive that CAME with the computer and the DVD Rewriter I just bought toke the place of a CD Drive.

Why won't the dvd tray open after I burn? Should I try setting one dvd drive to master and the other to slave? Also If this matters, My Hard Drive is wired up with a diffrent type of cable (not IDE).

My computer is a: HP Pavilion a1120nI doubt it has anything to do with jumper settings, but if it is a SAFER bet to use Master/Slave from my experience.

You should be able to open the tray by inserting a paperclip into the little hole near the eject button, however, if it refuses to open the program might not yet be done or perhaps the CD/DVD tray is failing. Are you sure it has completed the burn process itself ? ?
Most burners i've seen auto eject the DVD upon completion although this might not be true in your case.

Do you mean Cable Select (CS)? "Far left" is a meaningless description.

Okay, thanks for the info. I will try one drive on master and the other on slave.

And I thought it made sense. I said its not on master or slave but on the far left one.

Also I have used my other DVD drive with the same program and it opens after. The program (DVD Deycripter) says that the ISO has been burnt successfully. So my old drive would work after but new drive won't. So Its most likely not the programs fault. The problem might be that everything is on the left...I just set the one drive to master and the other to slave and it now works.
Quote
And I thought it made sense. I said its not on master or slave but on the far left one.

There are three settings - Master (MA), Slave (SL) and Cable Select (CS). Where they are located depends on the manufacturer, not the compass.

If everything worked FINE before, but not since the drive was added, it is either a hardware or configuration ERROR.

Solve : Power Supply Problems :(?

Answer»

HI, I'm new here...

I was wondering if anyone could HELP me with this

I've got a *censored* 450W power supply hooked up to an Asus s939 A8N-E motherboard
It's usually very noisy...
I booted it up today, and it was even noiser, and I didn't even get past the motherboard startup screen..
I've only tried one solution, and that's smacking the *censored* out it...lol..
Is there anychance it could be broken? It has worked fine for about a day or two..

Another thing... it's a 20pin hookup on a 24pin hookup... so I'm missing like 4 pins at the end... could that be the problem

AND

If I hook my up old 270W powersupply, could it do any good with a

A64 3800+
1GB DDR
Geforce 7950 GT 512mb

Your help is greatly appreciated WELCOME to the forums.

Be very thankful that your crappy PSU didn't TAKE out your mobo after being SMACKED around a bit.

Could it be broken :-? What do you think :-?

As for the 20/24 pin hookup - get real. Break open the piggy BANK and buy a decent 450w PSU..

Solve : Help....?

All you are doing is creating headaches for yourself.
Get into BIOS and set your cdrom as the 1st boot device.
Put your XP disk into your cdrom, boot up, format & do a clean install.
A previous install in a different computer with your HD as a slave is just asking for trouble.
Do you have a genuine Microsoft XP disk? All of the ctrl alt codes bring me to the same place F1 does there is no Cmos or bios figurations therenow I'm P..o'ed I ran the xp boot floppy and then ran the cd and still have to boot off the floppy and its becoming aggravating ...? Stupid F'in PC goes blank if the floppy isn't inserted..Let's start all over. This has gone on waaaaay too long.

What make and model of computer. How much RAM and what CPU? Is this a legal and shiney real Windows CD or some sort of restore disk. Have you monkeyed with the BIOS settings? If so, set them all to the default positions. (You said it was an IBM, so assuming it is, that is easy to do.)

In the BIOS make sure that the machine is set to boot to CD first, save your settings, exit the BIOS and restart the machine. What happens now.

What EXACTLY happened prior to all of this?

Quote

All of the ctrl alt codes bring me to the same place F1 does there is no Cmos or bios figurations there

How to enter CMOS/BIOS setup(Click)

It doesn't have to be the F1 button.

You should pay close attention to Fed and Gx_Man because right now you're obviously not doing that. If you're just going to ignore our questions then there is no point in helping you.I have done everything they have told me to do. I have tried all the settings to get into the bios and it doesnt go there. (bios) I know how to get into the bios and cmos on the other comps we have but for some reason this one computer wont let me find it. Yes it is the full version of win xp.... the make and model is an IBM 300gl.... hard drive is 3gigs.... the ram is 96mb ram.... yes its low .... as for what happened well our teen daughter went into the msconfig and DISABLED all the settings.. So the biggest prob I have right now is getting into the bios... and the system prop. tells me that C is turned off.....Quote
s for what happened well our teen daughter went into the msconfig and disabled all the settings.. So the biggest prob I have right now is getting into the bios

These issues are not related. Windows does not in any way affect the BIOS.

What brand of PC do you have and what type of CMOS?I know these 2 issues are not related.. I never said they were... What Im telling you is as I have mentioned many times.....I cannot find the bios or c-mos settings in this computer..... I know what to do once I get into the bios or c-mos.... But again I cant find these settings..... I have tried all the commands that the others have told me to try and they do not work....I have mentioned before that it is a IBM 300gl....You could have inspected the mainboard to see what CMOS chip is installed.. And while you're at it, reset it to its default values so it will complain and tell you system settings are wrong.

Try that and see if it will allow you to access the BIOS.HOLD down the F1 button BEFORE you power up the machine...

If this fails try the same technique with Ctrl S

patio. 8-)K I held down the F1 key as soon as it started the PC of course yells at me tells me keyboard error then takes me into config/setup utility and there is no cmos or bios settings in there..But in product data it tells me bios mode is desktop??In case you're still puzzling over this you'll find that all Thinkpads require you to hold the F1 key before turning the machine on. Keep the F1 key pressed while it's booting up and - you're in.

Patio is correct.Have you tried removing the ram cleaning the contacts and
reseating it.

Have you thought about a new CMOS battery?Something doesn't figure here.

If you take out one memory module assuming you have 2,will it then go to the cmos settings because hardware CONFIGURATION has changed?

But,SSSthon SSSometthings gotta work!Fer SSShame! Fer SSShame!
At this stage hit Ctrl S and see if that does it...Take it to a shop. It is beyond your help. Here is what I see... system summary
product Data
Devices and I/O ports
Start Options
Date and Time
System SECURITY
Advanced Setup
ISA Legacy Resources
Power Management
Save Settings
Restore Settings
Load Default Settings
Exit Setup
In these Settings it does not have a place to change Bios or Cmos..HOWEVER I find an area that shows a boot method but my choices are confusing to me ..pxe,tcp/ip,netware,rpl ..As for the Mo bo I'm still attempting to find the make of it..

thanks AsHTwo lessons here:

1) All hard drives fail you eventually, so burning to an optical media is always better.

2) Some kind of backup strategy is required IF your data is worth saving.

You may get lucky, but if not data recovery services are VERY expensive.

now there is no display...

You've given contradictory facts here. Is it 64MB or 256MB? It's one or the other, not both.

Has this video card ever worked for you? If so, what has changed? Were you tampering with things?ofcourse i know CPU-central processing unit.

the video card realy is 64MB DDR, it is the RAM which is 256MB..

in UNIT A, i connect a monitor, it doesn't seem to have power.but if i conect it to UNIT B, the monitor turns on. now im concluding that it is that UNIT A which has a problem and not the monitor. it is that UNIT A that have the 64MB DDR and RAM of 256Try switching videocards, see if the problem continues.

And your PC is not just a CPU. okey,im WRONG in saying that CPU,what matters is that u got wat i min...

i already tried switching video cards but i didnt try the video card of that defective UNIT to a working UNIT...
ill try it by and by...

any other alternatives?Yes, slowly take the PC apart to determine the parts that are faulty and the parts that are working. Just be careful not to damage working parts with broken parts when you test them in another machine.

Oh, and don't mount your HDD in another PC and then boot from it unless you want to reinstall Windows.

Solve : My Hard Drive died.?

Answer»

Yes this is HORRIBLE. I dropped my hard drive onto the floor and made a big thud. This hard drive however was a slave so only stuff like videos, games, music, pictures WOULD be lost.

Heres the problem now. When i plug the power to the hard drive it makes an un usualy reading sound. Like a broken radio signal (screeeeeeetch). My BIOS doesn't see any hard drive, neither does my DEVICE manager and disk manager. I know its obviously broken but is there and hope i can fix it? Its a 250 gig maxtor and it's fairly new.

Any help is welcomed. Please =]You could use it as a fridge magnet.
Even if you ever got it to work again by getting it repaired or dropping it again on the other side, would you ever be able to trust it?Seriously I would use it again. What have I got to loose? Anyways I was actually thinking of dropping it the other way but I diddn't because that only works for some things. You won't be able to fix it yourself and I think it would be cheaper to buy a new HD than get the old one repaired if at all possible.I guess so. Thanks for the info it's just that I had some valuable information on that hard drive. =[using damaged equipment is never a good idea. what if it starts a fire? you will LOSE more than just some binary code.Data recovery is always an option if your data is valueble enough. Phone a few companies and ask for prices. But it's very expen$ive.

THis makes a good case (again) that anything important needs to be BACKED up to something OTHER than a hard drive. They all die eventually.

Solve : New problem?

Answer»

Hi. I was here a few weeks back. My computer died. I thought it was the mobo. Ordered a new one and damaged my cpu removing it from the old mobo (thanks thermal paste!). Got my new mobo and chip installed. Now here is my problem.

When the machine boots up. I see it recognize my sata hard drive. When windows starts to load, it reboots. I try to run powermax from a floppy drive to check my harddrive, but the program does not find my harddrive. I attempted to repair windows, but get a message that it cannot find my harddrive. I tried to REINSTALL windows, but got a message saying it could not find my harddrive. I go into bios and I see that it recognizes my harddrive. I just don't know. I would like to save all the stuff on my harddrive too. So if someone has a solution, I would appreciate it. Here are the specs on my SYSTEM now.

AMD 64 Athlon 3000
ASUS K8U-X mobo
1 gig Corsair PC 3200
150 Gig Maxtor 7200 RPM Sata Harddrive
Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro with 256 mb
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card.

thanks for the help.It sounds like the hard drive has issues.

I would try to boot with a Linux Live CD and see if it is recognized and the data retrievable. Alternatively you could slave it to a working machine to salvage files. Both of these depend on it actually being able to function. Could this be what killed the thing in the first place? The SATA drivers need to be installed very early in the XP INSTALL process...watch for the prompt and hit F6 at the appropiate time.I think it is a mobo issue. I found a page in the saying that the sata socket is not hot and you have to run Windows xp service pack 1 at least. Well, how do you put it on their? Its kinda like a chicken or the egg senerio. I went to ASUS and left a note for technical support. I'm hoping there might be a bios update or somthing. Still OPEN for suggestions.

Thanks
Well, you didn't mention installing the RAID drivers, so maybe that is the problem. Windows XP does not recognize the SATA technology, so this must be done. I forget how to create the driver boot disk on the computer you are building, but you can make it on another working computer. Take your ASUS driver cd to another computer and create the SiS RAID Driver Disk on a floppy. Once you have done that, go back to the one you are building, begin to install XP, and when it asks if you would like to install any third party RAID drivers, hit F6. Follow the steps and there you go.

Good luck!

Better pissed off than pissed on. You surely don't EXPECT people to REMEMBER your specs, do you? Whether more info is needed or not depends on what you need help with. For example, your HD. Someone might ask how it is formatted, or partitioned, or whether it is a master or slave drive. Having the specs in your sig is a GOOD start, but is not necessarily the complete picture.Yes, like what is your motherboard, what exactly is your processor model and what is your problem?

If i unplug it and TRY again it will usually do the same thing but after about 3-10 tries it eventually will boot all the way up instead of just "dying" after a few seconds. it's almost like it is powering up and then can't quite GET all the way there. it reminds me of a car when the starter is going but the motor doesn't catch. any help greatly appreciated, thanksWhen was the last time your computer had a complete internal cleaning and all connections were checked?

Is there such a virus or spyware that eats up your computer disk drive? Because I have been having this problem, and it seems impossible to fix. umm.. and there is this one game file i am not able to delete, i dont know if that is the cause, but it might be.(is there another way to delete a game that doesnt work, and freezes when you TRY to click on it?) Eventually over time, my hard drive space will be taken up and i will have no more space. Spyware, and Virus scan is not a choice for me, because when the scanner scans the game, it freezes. I guess the only way is to take out the virus or spyware MANUALLY? (Is that even possible? lol.) well, if you can help me, i would greatly appreciate it.

well, thanks alot.

p.s. Im a computer newbie, so im not so smart about computers. Is it just the one file or every file you try and delete?

It could be just that you need to RESTART your PC after uninstalling the game as they sometimes do leave residiual files or folders that can't be deleted after an uninstall. Try restarting your PC if you haven't already.yeah, i tried to reastar my computer many times. Its just this one file sitting on my desktop. It doesnt do anything, lol.Try restarting in safe mode with system restore off. Delete the file and then run your scans while there.

If that doesn't get it try Killbox.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/killbox.php

If that doesn't get it post back. As a matter of fact, if it DOES get it post back. In that case, a while ago I found a sneaky way of deleting the undeletable.

Start Command prompt up and work your way to your desktop, or where the files are located.

Open task manager and FIND the explorer.exe process, end it.

Then back in the Command Prompt delete the offending file and exit.

Restart your PC and it should be GONE.

I have just moved house and set up my computer but when I turned it on the moniter didnt work, the light came on green, then it said on the display 'no signal input or cable disconnected or power saving', then the light turned amber and it went into standby. I have figured out it is a problem with the computer because I tried out my HOUSEMATES moniter and it did the same thing. The computer and moniter doesnt bleep or anything when switched on, but the computer sounds like its working, lights/fan are on etc.

Does anyone know how I can fix this, is it a loose connection inside?

Cheers guys!Well with knowing nothing about the machine from what you posted I would have to guess.....maybe.

If it has an add on video card it may need to be firmly seated in the slot. You will have to open the case to do this. Sometimes this happens during a move. If it persists or you want to post a LOT of details about the system, etc. for better help then let us know.Thankyou for replying, I know this sounds really stupid, but I actually dont know wat the computer specs are, because the only way I know how to find them is looking on the computer which I can't do cos it wont work!! I'm going to open the case now and have a look inside to see if the card has come loose...If you DOWNLOAD and run Everest Home and make a report you will know EVERYTHING that is inside that computer, once you get it running.

Fans barely draw any power, the risk of damaging something is greater than the possibility of your problem being caused by a fan me thinks.

I was about to say it was a COM port issue. An old old computer of mine had that issue and I just disabled the COM port in the BIOS and it seemed to go away... Only try this if you do not use the COM (normally, the serial) port for anything.

This has nothing to do with his ISSUES...

patio. 8-)I've backed up my important files, and will most likely re-install everything, due to the fact I am planning to purchase a new MOTHERBOARD AMONG the new parts.-=Updating, not bumping old thread=-

My computer is back from repair, the problem was the fan was overloaded with dust, and I couldn't clean it with my own tools, the problem is now fixed and everything is back to normal, I've been told where to buy air pressure as well, to prevent further occurences.

Solve : CD-Rom causing computer restarts?

Answer»

I recently purchased a new computer and to cut costs didnt buy a new cd-rom drive figuring I could use the one from my old computer. If the drive is connected to the computer I cannot get past post as the computer RESETS when checking for ide drives and am unable to get to bios. If I wait to plug in the drive till the computer loads up XP, it immediatly resets and continues resetting when it checks for ide drives.
I have TRIED using either ide port on mobo and switching the drive from master to slave with no effect.

My computer specs are:
AMD X2 3800 AM2 CPU
320GB SATA II 7200RPM HD
GIGABYTE AM2 NF4-SLI m55SLI-S4
Generic CD-RW IDE Drive
500W PSU
1GB DDR2 PC6400 Ram

Would appreciate any help or suggestions. ThanksHow is the drive jumpered and on what cable? Is the CD seen in the BIOS/setup screen? The drive is the only one on an IDE cable connected to the second IDE slot atm. It is jumpered as master but I originally had it as slave. I am unable to get to the BIOS with it plugged in as it resets before i can.Do you have ANOTHER drive to try with? Do you have a warranty on that motherboard?

You surely don't mean that you are plugging in a device when the machine is running? Lol... yea i kinda wondered about the wisdom of plugging in the drive while the comp was on but i was desperate. :-/ I was putting off trying a different drive but if you think it will help i will try it now. The computer is brand new so i would hope it isnt the motherboard being broke that is causing the problem, but yes, i do have a warranty.
THANKS for the response
Tried a different dvd-rom drive and am having no problems with it. Thanks for the push in the right direction GX1... just needed to get off my lazy but and troubleshoot i guess.
Really, really appreciate the help. You're welcome and thanks for posting back.

Now you have a totally new machine, right?

Solve : Video card problem post-SP2 update?

Answer»

So I decided to finally UPGRADE to SP2, only because my Windows Live Messenger was not working on SP1 for some funky reason. After doing so, I had to install some of the drivers again (wireless, sound, video card, monitor). I was on a roll until the 3rd one, video card, got me stuck. I use a generic Nvidia 128mb AGP card, and I have the drivers for it, but the computer doesn't seem to detect the card at all. This was never a problem back when I was using SP1. I tried uninstalling the previous drivers and reinstalling again, but the driver software still wouldn't detect the card. What's more, I checked in Device Manager and I couldn't even find Display Adapter! I tried going the Add Hardware way, but that didn't help. I even tried unplugging the card and PLUGGING it back in, but still no luck. Right now I'm on VGA I think. Before I try a reformat (too much to go through, backup and whatnot) or buying a new card, I'd like to see if I can fix this. Hope someone can help!

HP pav 061
AMD 3000+ (2.2Ghz)
768 DDR RAM
Windows XP Pro SP2

Generic Nvidia 128mb AGP video card (I used 77.72 driver before and it was fine)
Samsung SyncMaster 940bw monitor (I can't use it properly because the monitor needs the video card RUNNING to have it set to proper widescreen RESOLUTION, which I believe is 1440x900 or something. I'm running 1024x768 now with a crappy refresh rate...)

Solve : Are Dual Processors worth buying??

Answer»

;DI have been looking at these dual processing machines and would like to know if it is worth me spending my piggy bank savings on a new PC.

The applications I mainly run are:

Desktop Publishing, including image creation
Video editing
Web site creation and maintenance
Internet
Games
Music creation, editing and converting

Spec at the moment:

P4 3.0mHz 512ram
Radeon 9250
Delta 44

Basically any video editing other than high end gaming is the most taxing task on a MACHINE...i would say that coupled with a decent vid card you would be happy with your extra investment for years to come.

patio. 8-)Thanks for your thoughts Patio.

I also wondered about how much ram I should invest in too - for this potential Dual Processor.

BTW
MACs are all about dual processing now, especially as they are biased towards music and graphic apps. So I can see why they would be desirable there.

So, I don't suppose anyone knows of a site/info area which contains an idiots guide to dual processing so that I can read up on the subject?? 1G of RAM should suit your needs...you could always bump it up to 2G LATER on when pricing flattens out a bit...

Guide below:

http://www.techweb.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=161300003

patio. 8-)I think a dual-core would be the "perfect" example of buying the right system for the applications he is doing. The fit is perfect. Spend the money! Is there anything a dual-core processor isn't perfect for?DOS 4.1...roflQuote

Is there anything a dual-core processor isn't perfect for?

Overkill for word processing, e-mail, web surfing, etc.better over kill then underresourced where it takes forever to do anythingThe only place you see differences are in raw speed, based on gigahertz power, or multiple processor use, which is rare with current software.

I can type the same speed on a Word document with a Pentium I as on an Intel DualCore. DVD playback is a constant speed, regardless of processor. Net surfing is more dependant on connection than processor. Well, you get the idea.

For Games and Video Editing, as you listed, it can be quite helpful. WHETHER it's $1000 better depends on what you have now.I thought the advantage of a dual-core is it can process more than one program's instructions at once - or perhaps two sets of instructions from the same program, however all but the most recent ones cannot do this. Since playing a game isn't multitasking, it's singletasking (I don't download etc whilst playing) as far as I can see a faster single core would be better than an indivudually slower double-core. Right?

Solve : Cd Drive won't open!!?

Answer»

If it's a HP computer and still under warranty, phone them up and tell them what's happened, they should happily fix it for you.I do have restore points,

I do have a few install CDs,

It is an HP Pavilion RUNNING XP SP2,

I'm unsure if it has a warranty on it at all, much less if it still WOULD be under warranty, I've had to open it up to fix a cable on the hard DRIVE before... I could ask the GUY who bought it, see if he got the warranty...

I will not buy MSI again, but I am sure there are some MSI solutions that do work. Like the Shuttle computers? Although I haven't seen any for sale anymore so I suppose those failed as well.

Solve : Microphone headset problem?

Answer»

I race online and I WOULD like to USE my headset for communication. When i use the mic it works but the person I'm talking with comes over my speakers instead of the headset. It is plugged in correctly as I can tell. How can I fix this p[roblem??

Thanks.

HarrisonDoes your mic have two connectors that need to be plugged into your computer? I THINK you may need to unplug your speakers and plug a jack for incoming mic sound to that jack.Is there a splitter or something that would allow me to use the speakers and HEAR through the headset for conversations on TEAM speak?

Solve : CD-ROM drive not playing cds properly?

Answer»

i have a dvd cd-rw drive(philips cdrw/dvd). when i put in a cd, a music or dvd, the cd skips and does not play the cd continously. the cds do not have any scatches on them, and i've had this computer for only about 4 months. i checked the device manager and it says that it is working properly. my computer is an hp dv2000t LAPTOP, and i do watch a lot of dvds on it, so maybe i over used it. do i possibly need to replace it? or maybe i need to clean the LENS? anybody have any SUGGESTIONS?No doubt the machine has a warranty, so use it. That's what it's for.problem fixed. i had to lower the tab on the hardware ACCELARATION option, under advance settings for the SPEAKERS. that took care of the static and stutter that i was experiencing with my cd-rom drive.

For Dual channel, yes. Slots should be coloured accordingly. Same colour means same channel.

You should check your BIOS if this is a newly built PC. perhaps your FSB is out of alignment. You should check your BIOS if this is a newly built PC. perhaps your FSB is out of alignment.

Not quite. Setting it to "Auto" should do.

If you're not entirely sure on how to use your BIOS, you should refer to the mainboard manual.Try installing with 1 gig ram.

I got the same window with a new 2 gig install . removed 1 stick and the system worked. Then purchased to 1 gig sticks from crucial and did not have another problem again. That would be 2-1 gig sticks.

Solve : Installing PSU.. without dying, possible??

Answer»

I just found out that my 500w PSU is like everything else in my PC - cheap and old. Why is that? because 2 years ago i didnt know what a motherboard was.. god bless me.

So now i have to dish out 50.. no wait i live in Israel now.. 150$ for a NEW PSU with 30A+ for my new 8800 GTX (wich costs 1278$ by the way).

My question is this - what are the chances of me, err ah.. not burning into a fukcing crisp while trying to install the new PSU? I was told "DONT GO NEAR THE PSU.. idiot" because its dangeous (something with volts and amps.. its all very technical), but im too proud.... and cheap, to get someone else to do it.. so can anyone give me a ball-park estimate here? I'm going to the army next year, so i might aswell die now..

And u become a man-sized bread stick.. extra well-done.No he's right, you unplug your PC and there is no electricity to kill you flowing through it. If you want to be really safe and secure once you have unplugged it, press the power button that will use up any residual electricity that might happen to be still flowing round the circuits.

Your PC is perfectly safe for you to touch if it is unplugged. Safe for you that is, not for your PC. If you want your PC to be safe while you mess about with the insides I would suggest getting yourself an anti-static kit.

After that it is one of the easiest parts to swap. Just unplug the cables (make sure you be careful with the mothetboard one as it's got a clip on it) and unscrew the PSU from your case.Quote

Solve : The right ram but wrong speed?

Answer»

Hi all. I bought some new RAM and had a technician install it. He had a bit of trouble getting the PC to recognise it but did eventually get it right. Apparently the new ram is the right kind but not the right speed.
Since then we've had nothing but trouble with programmes closing suddenly and all kinds of ERROR reports.
Have I got the wrong ram or could it be something else going wrong?
Any help would be appreciated please.

I have a Hyundai 2600
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
I had 256 ram and installed another 256
NVIDIA gEforce2 MX/MX400
40 gig HARD drive
I don't about any other specsWell it's obviously not the right RAM...

TRY this http://www.crucial.com/systemscanner/I ran a scan at crucial.com before buying the ram.
The ram they stated that I already had was wrong and the one they recommended for my system has never been heard of in NewZealand
Is there any way to make them compatible or shall I just take it out and try and get the right one?Right RAM=no problems

Wrong RAM=your current position.A little info might have been good but thankyouIt would have helped if you had posted more info as well, but you got perfect advice based on what you posted. It was vague at best.

But since you're gone, good luck.

See below.Try running it with only the stick of RAM you got from Crucial, to rule out the possibility that your other stick is damaged.is it a laptop or a desktop?comp-love, the ORIGINAL poster has been gone well over a week and is now an ex-member (as well as being rude).Off to The Sin Bin i say...

Solve : Creative SB Audigy Firewire port stopped working?

Answer»

Okay, here's the deal:

I have an external enclosure with two IDE drives in it. The enclosure CONNECTS to the firewire port on my Soundblaster Audigy 2 soundcard. Everything worked fine until a few days ago when I rearranged the computer area and, after moving the computer 3 feet over, the external drives were no longer detected and my speakers snap, crackle, and pop like it's nobody's business. The firewire port is still shown in device manager. What I've tried so far:

1. Switching the PCI slot the soundcard is in
2. Updating all drivers
3. Switching to different IRQs
4. Installing a simple 3-port firewire PCI card and plugging the enclosure into that (card was detected, drives were not)

All wire are connected and all ports have been tried. What should I do??Try a different cable

Alan <>< oh man if i buy a new cable and the SOLUTION was that simple i'll feel like a real moronYou could also try un-installing the firewire port in Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager...Windows will automatically re-install it on reboot.
