Solve : USB driver does not start (Win 2000)?

Answer»

Windows 2000 SP4
When the system starts, it will not start the USB driver (ALi PCI to USB Open Host controller): yellow exclamation mark in configuration-system-hardware.
A solution is to have the system re-install the driver automatically. That works fine and the connected peripherals (printer and scanner) work OK. But after system switch-off, the problem re-appears.

I have looked in the services but cannot find anything appropriate.
Any suggestions?

Motherboard is MSI MS-5169; CPU is AMD K6-2
Chipset is van ULi Electronics: ULi/ALi M1541 ALADDIN5 (North: ULi/ALi M1541; SOUTH ULi/ALi M1533/1535/1543)

Have you got Service Pack 2 installed?

If you haven't, that is most likely your problem. ASSUMING you are using Windows XP.Notice he's running Windows 2000 Pro SP4

Try booting into SafeMode, go to Device Manager & delete the drivers for the USB device that's coming up the the yellow dot-exclaimation point, then reboot. Windoze should reinstall the drivers.

What happens?

Same thing; it nicely installs the drivers and EVERYTHING works, but upon re-start the problem is back.

Solve : 2000 Prof won't fill desktop?

Answer»

A friend brought me his laptop that had recently been reformatted with Windows 2000 Professional. His major problem is that since reformatting, the SCREEN that comes up, (like IE) will not fill the desktop. It has a 2" border on all four sides. I have tried adjusting everything except the Bios. Restoring the registry won't help because the reformat was recent.

Any suggestion how to make the windows fill the screen? The little boxes at the top right do nothing.

The other problem he had was getting his computer to print to file. He doesn't have a printer, and he wanted to print to notepad, but it kept asking for a printer.

SandyDo you mean it won't fill the monitor (and you get a black empty border round the screen?) or you can see the desktop around the Window? Hm that's odd if so. If it's a new format I'd be tempted just to reformat again.Since the repair did he REMEMBER to re-install the video drivers ? ?

This is definitely connected to a resolution problem. The display needs to be set to a HIGHER resolution (after the drivers have been installed, as patio says).Lowering thr resolution may help too. The WAY he describes the problem, to me it sounds like when he maximizes a window it does not fill all of the desktop, leaving a border of desktop around it, eg with icons and stuff. That's a very odd problem, hopefully he can elaberate. Not as odd as you might think - this always happens with laptop displays that aren't running at their native resolution and which don't have "screen stretching" built in.

Solve : Microsoft Excel 2000 - Prevent Copy?

Answer»

Is there any way to prevent a user from copying an entire worksheet and PASTING it in a different file?
Thank you!You can always apply protection on your WORKSHEETS and workbooks.

Tools -> Protection -> Protect Sheet / Protect WorkbookTools -> Protection -> Protect Sheet / Protect Workbook will not prevent copying and pasting into another file. It will only prevent the specific file in which protection was enabled from being modified.

You may want to put a password on the file to open or modifiy it. To do this, use Save As, and click on Tools in the Save As panel. Then, choose General Options and set the password(s).Quote

Is there any way to prevent a user from copying an entire worksheet and pasting it in a different file?
Convert it to a PDF; don't distribute the xls file. You can do this using the free program, PrimoPDF. Find a link to it in the software FAQ (see my signature).I never TRIED it with a PDF of an Excel sheet, but it is possible to copy text from a PDF quite easily - just nobody knows about it I can't recall seeing a PDF of a spreadsheet but I'm sure that it would not contain formulas. It would simply show the results of formulas, just as the ACTUAL spreadsheet would. So, even though the numbers and text in an Excel file converted to PDF could perhaps be copied, the underlying formulas could not. Good point.I guess it would be useful to know what the OP actually wants to do...

Solve : 2000 Pro install. problems?

Answer»

I can get to the first reboot in the setup which brings you here where you're supposed to wait and not press anything for Windows 2000 Pro to start up:

http://www.windows2000.windowsreinstall.com/installnewhdd/Image20.jpg

But instead of starting up it just says something like Disk read error press Ctl+Alt+Delete to restart. If you restart it brings you to the same spot over and over and over again.

What's going on? I have a Dell 1ghz, 256mb ram, 20GBhd computer that has been formatted in setup (then put Windows 2000 on it and ended up at the problem.)You have a 20GB hard drive if you have it ID'd go to the manufacturers
website and download the diagnostic tools.

The below site may help with that.

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287Hmm.. THANKS I'll try this when I get home, but the thing is I had the HD working with Windows 98 on it earlier in the week.. so UNLESS formatting it messed the HD up.. I DUNNO. Can I use one of these diagnostics without an operating system though?
I think you may have something with the hdd messing up after the install. Did you do a clean install or an upgrade? My luck with upgrades isn't all that hot I prefer to copy all pertinent data to another media, reformat and reinstall the OS. Cleaner / neater / and for me better all around.

Usually you will be able to boot to the program prior to the OS installing itself.

Alan <>< I'm in the process of trying to do a clean install. But when it says to reboot it does, then says there was a disk read error. Anyways I'm gonna try that diagnostic thing, hopefully it'll work.
I've read that I need to return my BIOS to default, but there's no option for this on my PC. Is there a special button combonation to do this?? Or did I just MISS it in the BIOS?Carefully clean that CD off using a lint free cloth...is this a copy or does it have all that shiny Geniune Windows MS crap on the front ? ?It's a store-bought copy of Windows 2000 Pro. There is no problem with the hard drive (I've tried 2 and get the same result), but here's something for you.

When I try and install using NTFS file system, when I reboot to start Windows 2000 Pro, it says there's a "Disk read error, press ctrl+alt+delete to restart"

When I try and install using FAT32 file system, when I reboot to start Windows 2000 Pro, it says "Disk error, press any key to continue." Then when you press a key it reads from the cd again and waits to see if you want to boot from it.

???This is really starting to piss me off, I've tried everything and nothing works...I hate computers!!Did you try the HDD diagnostics, you don't need an OS to do it.I tried using the site street1 suggested and made a diagnostic disk. I ran it and guess what? ERROR! I'm going to tech this overnight and come back in the morning with my findings. Thanks for the help so far guys. :-/Free diagnostics can be downloaded from the appropriate hard drive maker's site. They can be RUN from a floppy or a CD. No OS is required. If you're getting a disk error with the diagnostic software...both NTFS & FAT type partitions, sounds like you have a hard drive problem.

I'd partition the hard drive. That's one way to know if you have issues with the disk surface. 20 gig isn't so big so you can watch the partition process. If you get an "allocation error" dump the disk.

No reset the BIOS to the default? Strange...

You might remove the battery to the motherboard & leave it out for a few minutes. That should drain the CMOS chip of its stored settings. Reinsert the battery and reconfigure your BIOS.

Solve : Reg hack in win2000?

Answer»

Ok, I hate to admit this, but Im getting OLD....I must have used this hack like 500 times a year ago in about 4 of the classrooms that I monitor, and now, today, when I want to do it again, I cant remember how to do it.......
Here's the dilemma Im in.
I need to turn on the NumLock at boot, and I know the reg value is 2, however, in my reg keyboard setting my reg value now is at 0x80000000 and I cant remember where to put the 2...LOL....I am very much so hating to admit to this....I cant remember if I took out the entire key and dropped something else in there, or if I took ONE of the 0's off and put the 2 at the end....Please someone save my sanity today!!! LOL
And many thankx in advance......I have about two other problems that I will need help with...this is the easiest one, so I thought Id lay this one out there first.you can turn the numlock on/off through the bios, easier & quicker than reg hack.

if you can't do that for whatever reason, check the reg on one of the computers you changedOk, I didnt GO into too much detail....the old systems are now re-imaged with xp pro, and the bios is showing that it is on, however, as soon as the system boots, and I have to enter a password, the numlock is off.

but thanks for the answerWindows XP - Switching Num Lock On
Windows XP will switch off the Num Lock key when it boots. In some cases it's enough to make sure that the Num Lock key is enabled when you shut down; Windows will remember the status of Num Lock, and enable it on the next boot. In other cases this may not work, and Windows will always default to switching Num Lock off when booting. To fix this:

# Start the Registry Editor
# Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Keyboard\
# DOUBLE-click the value InitialKeyboardIndicators, and enter 2 as it's Value data
# Close the registry editor
# Log off, or restart Windows for the changes to take effect

patio. 8-)OK, for all of you out there that dropped suggestions....first and foremost, THANK YOU ALL! It was greatley appreciated in my dark hour of need! LOL

However, I was able to find the following and it helped me out a bit:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Microsoft\Input Devices. Right-click on Input Devices, then select New, Key. Name the new key Keyboard. Highlight Keyboard, right-click on it, then click New, String Value. Name it NumLock. Enter ON as the value to turn the NumLock key on or OFF to turn it off.

Yes, a bit more in depth than what I wanted to do, however, it was pretty much the one thing that worked for me. And this time, I did a copy PASTE into a file that we use called "semester Cleanup" for all computers.
don't forget to do a key export so you can keep the hack and just double click it next time Even though my advice fell on deaf ears it still works...

Solve : 2000 user can't get back on the net?

Answer»

Looking for some help....In an attempt to clean up my hard drive, and remove "junk" (SPYWARE, old programs, etc) off the computer, I deleted numerous files that I "thought" were not important. Now when I attempt to launch internet explorer I'm not able to connect to the net. The modem/router is worker properly because the wireless laptops in the house are working fine.. Also, I deleted the files in the recycle bin before I discovered the problem... All of the software installed on the hard drive is working fine (office, Excel etc).....Any advise as to what to check?
I have try to "restore to last known good configuration" without success..

ThanksDo you have a real Windows CD?Before you do this, MAKE SURE you have the real Windows CD as suggested by GX1_Man.

Open Control Panel/ Add/Remove Programs / Add/Remove Windows Components. Un-TICK Internet Explorer / reboot / go THRU the same process only this time PUT a tick in Internet Explorer.

Alan <>< Yes, I do have a 2000 Pro CD..I will give your SUGGESTION a try...Do I need to backup any of the files I have prior to running the windows CD??

Thanks again for the help..
You should always have important files backed up anyway. THis is especially important when tinkering with the operating system itself.

If you put your XP Home into the cdrom drive and reboot the computer, provided your BIOS is set to boot to the cdrom first, the CD should spin up and give you the option of LOADING XP on it.

Solve : Windows2000 Login?

Answer»

Hello everyone, I'm not too computer literate so take it kind of easy on me.

First off my computer is a Direction SPL 300 (old I know), 300 mhz, pent 2, 128mb RAM (currently, upgrading soon, like within a few days to 224mb), 100gb HDD, Windows2000 Prof.

I recently (yesterday) INSTALLED a new HDD (100gb) in my computer and used (sorry for name dropping) MaxBlast 4 to copy each partition from the old HDD to the new one and everything seems to have copied over fine, except when I start the computer with the new HDD it goes all the way to the WINDOWS 2000 login (Ctrl, Alt, Delet) screen. I tried logging in using both administrator and my active user account. And after typing in my username and password, the computer changes to the normal "loading your personal settings" screen and then immediately jumps back to the login screen. Does anyone know of a reason for this? I am asking the same question on another forum, and there suggestion was boot in SAFE mode, which I am going to try tomorrow (26AUG06) when I am off of work. But does anyone else have any other suggestions?

Anything will help.

-Thanks-Do you have a real Windows CD to reinstall, if necessary?Nope, trust me if I had I would've just installed a whole new O/S on the new hard drive. Anyway I'm getting off of work in a few minutes, so I'm going to just try and run it in safe mode if that doesn't work, I guess I'll just keep that drive as extra storage.Have you tried just hitting Enter at the logon screen ? ?

patio. 8-)Well it looks like I screwed it up pretty bad. This morning I tried to re-copy the C drive to my new HDD from the old one and, I ended up LOOSING my Windows2000 on my new and old HDD. See, my old HDD was dual-boot Windows95/Windows2000 and when I tried copying it this morning I ended up with both the new and old HDD's trying to boot only Windows95, and I haven't seen any sign of Windows2000, and when it trys to boot Windows95 (since I tried removing Windows95, a little while AGO) it goes directly to an MS-DOS Prompt screen and tells me that win.com can't be found. Is there something I can type into the MS-DOS Prompt, to get my Windows2000 back?

PLEASE HELP!!!

THANKS IN ADVANCE.

Solve : problem installing Windows Office Professional2000?

Yes I did that and then rebooted again and it went straight to loading XPIf you can boot from floppy, use Smart Boot MANAGER. There's a link in the software FAQ (see my SIGNATURE).I will try using that but how exactly does it work once i have it downloaded? If you run the program you download, from the command prompt, it will display brief help. You'll need a blank floppy.

Don't worry about that. XP is XP. Your installed version may just have a service pack that the CD version doesn't have. You can install it afterwards. Good luck.

Solve : Making Tasks in Outlook2000?

Answer»

I have a user who is having a problem with Outlook2000. When making a "new task" he will ENTER the task information, time, date, etc. When he tries to save it he gets an error, Invalid Perimeter. He was able to make new tasks in the past, 6-7 months ago. I have re-imaged the PC, and recently replaced the PC, same problem. We are on Exchange server, USERS PC is Win2k SP4, Outlook2000 SP3. No one else is having this problem, and all PC's in the company have the same image. Any help would be appreciated.
Thx!

BRIf you've replace the pc..all other pc's are the same and don't have the problem...could it be the wire? I've seen PROBLEMS where a pc won't work @ one location, it was moved...volia!! works fine.

Just a thought.

I actually re-imaged the pc with the company standard image, had the user try again, and still failed. So, I'm THINKING......could his "profile" in exchange server be causing the problem? Does anyone know about exchange? Could this be the problem?

Solve : windows 2000 pro stuck in cmos?

Answer»

when my computer starts up in will get stuck in cmos. it will let you navigate thruogh all the options but no MATTER what you PICK you can not get out of it. any help would be great.First off, the computer doesn't automatically go into CMOS by itself. Normally you have to hit a key (Del, for example) or some other key combination to get into the CMOS. YOU have to be the one to make it go there.

Do you have the motherboard manual? If so, find the section on how it TELLS you to reset the CMOS with the jumper settings. The other thing you can do is remove the motherboard BATTERY (looks like a nickel) for awhile, then put it back in. By removing the battery you will help the CMOS 'forget' it's settings and you can start from scratch.

Alan <><

And Windows 2000 or any other operating system has nothing to do with it.There was something under the delete key, it would still function so you could not TELL it was locked on. thanks for the input though. What was under the delete key ? ?

Regards,

If you have already repartitioned the disk, I assume all the data is gone, and you want a fresh install? I'm not familular with the Win2000 installer but try deleting all partitions and creating a new one. What exactly does it say when you try to format? You could try putting the harddrive as a slave in another computer and formatting it that way.You need to download and run the free diagnostics from the manufacturer's web site to make sure the HARD drive is usable.

If that checks out OK, TELL US what make and model, age, how you partitoned this hard drive and what else is on it. Have you monkey about inside the case, removed jumpers or anything like that? Any playing about in the BIOS?Hi,

i checked in the BIOS - it is detecting the HDD, no problem in that. The only problem is reoccuring while formatting the HDD using NTFS . i checked the jumper settings ,they are fine - no changes.

Solve : Windows 2000 or later?

Answer»

Hi everyone

Not sure if anyone can help... I am a Windows 98 SE user... have always liked this package, NEVER had any problems with it. However, have just got a new mobile phone and I need to download the software so I can transfer stuff from my old phone VIA computer to my new phone (the new phone has got jack shi....) on it!!! However, it won't let me download, SAYS my operating system won't support new software. Seems like I have to upgrade to Windows 2000 or later version.

Don't know anything about buying and installing software. Where is the best place to buy, exactly what am I looking for, ie what is it called. Typed Windows 2000 in search engine and just so bloody confused by all the terminology and all the software available. I am a home user and obviously want to spend as little as possible. Any advice would be welcome.

Solve : Windows 2000 GUI startup problem?

Answer»

Following the installation of a demo for some software the gui for Windows 2000 seems to have been corrupted.

After startup and login, both of which complete without error, all that is displayed is a blue screen and the mouse pointer. The mouse pointer can be moved around the screen and the screensaver eventually comes on but no other response is obtained. Also, the only keyboard response is to alt-ctrl-del. Access to the PC is possible only through safe mode with command PROMPT.

Any suggestions on how to repair the gui would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
nosbmWhat happened prior to this? Surely you have a clue for us. What software?Thank you for your response and my apologies for not responding before today.

It seems that for some reason the demo software that was installed has somehow prevented explorer.exe from starting normally with Windows. As far as I understand the situation explorer.exe should be one of the default processes RUNNING in Windows 2000, see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=263201; explorer.exe provides the taskbar, desktop etc for the user. The difficulty now is that even if explorer.exe is run manually from Task Manager nothing happens.

Also, the various files that were part of the demo package have all been manually deleted from the command prompt, so I am reasonably sure that the demo package is no longer doing anything.

The question then is how to repair/replace the Windows 2000 GUI without having to reinstall Windows?

Best regards,
nosbmYou could Do a windows System Repair

Its one of the options when you boot off an install disk, its when you chose wich partition to install on it also say press "R" to attempt a System Recovery

Ive not used this option Offten , i would prefair to Reinstall the Hole OS if i thought any Windows System Files might be Dammaged or Croupt

you could try useing the Recovery console and copying the files off the disk, but im not sure which files would fix the problem.

You could Lose Files doing any of these things, so be waryI’ve never said I was an Expert, and id rather not be so openly flamed. If you think that advice is bad what's your Opinion on on the problem?

Are you all Bark? Do you have any idea what you’re talking about?

And from the insults you are attempting against me you are making it known that you know allot less than I do.

So please if you are going to tell people my advice is bad maybe you could do it by posting Better advice rather than wasting time by showing off you INFERIORITY Complex
Ah yes an eloquently worded retort, I must say sir you baffle me with you massive intellect, I must take my hat off to you as you have proven to me now that you are in fact the second coming, and I quiver in the presence of your aura that you so magnificently project so well trough your medium of text, truly I am in awe.Careful Panboy. You are bordering on becoming what you were criticizing.

Your posts have become much better composed by the way. Very much more legible and coherent. I congratulate your effort. Please NOTE that this problem was finally resolved by upgrading the PC involved to Windows XP and the original demo software REINSTALLED. This demo package is now operational, so the problem would seem to have been some incompatability with Windows 2000.

Best regards,
nosbmThat Can happen with Demos, Always use full versions

Solve : Joining a windows 2000 domain?

We currently went from a workgroup environment to a Windows 2000 domain environment. On my computer I joined the domain after having setup the same userid and password on the AD domain. But after logging on to my computer and the new domain in I found out I was a different user and could not access my files or even my desktop SETTINGS on my computer. I missed SOMETHING very important and have been searching for an answer of how to setup an EXISTING PC and user on a Windows 2000 server. Can anyone help :-?Are you the administrator of this domain? You would need to log onto your computer using an account with admin rights over that computer, FIND the files you want and change their ownership to the domain user's account. Remember that LOCALMACHINE\Fred is not the same user as DOMAIN\Fred.Thanks Fred,
From your answer I'm assuming I can't do what I had hoped, ie save the users desktop and original file structure and if I understand you correctly I'll just move the files to the new Windows 2000 domain user from the Windows 2000 workstation users directory. It seems cumbersome but if that's what's needed to be done that's what I'll need to do.
Thanks for your response, I spent hours on this trying different ideas, it's nice to have someone lend a helping hand.

On the contrary - you can do it. You simply need to change the ownership of the files. They are currently owned by a local account; change the ownership to a domain account. That'll do the trick.Yes you can "Move" user accounts in windows 2000

What you have to do is login as the Administrator , right click on My computer, click on the advanced tab
Click on the "User Profiles" Button
Sorry i made a mistake its the user Profiles Tab in win2000

It should show all the users STORED localy Domain and Local,
Chose the old User Account
and click the copy too button
then browse to the New User location
eg: C:\Docs&Setteings\domianUser\
and copy

and your sorted.

I deleted files from my computer .. don't ask .. that I need to recover. In the recycle bin there was a file "S-1-2 etc" that I right-clicked and restored, but not all my files returned.

I desperately need SOMEONES help or advice. Do they make a program for recovery or is there a way to recover ??You might have a look at these. The more the machine is used, the more difficult it can be to recover things. There are commercial things that cost most and professional data recovery that costs a LOT of money. GOOD luck.

Remember - backup, backup, backup!

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=free+file+recoverykoalaw - First you should understand how deleted files are STORED in the Recycle bin and how they are stored when cleared from the Recycle bin. Go here and do a bit of reading.

Then go to here and get Restoration.

As a trial I have recovered files two years old with this program but it depends on how much free space there is on your hdd and how much hdd activity there has been since the file(s) was deleted.

Good luck

Thank you so much for your replies .. they are very much appreciated. I'm getting ready to try a program today and see what happens. I will post back to let you all know, since SOMEONE else might use this info to help them later.

Thanks again
Please do post back. We are always interested in how the story ended. Just giving you GUYS an update ... I am using a program called Restoration from aumha.org and it is working great. I don't think I realized how much I had lost.

I also tried a program called Smart Data Recovery from smartpctools.com and it worked really well also.

Thank you for all your help. Thanks for the update..

Solve : start command from cmd?

Answer»

Hi all.

I need to start telnet session with TITLE on the title BAR in windows XP. I TYPED below command at Start->Run->open

cmd /c start -m "Router-Samba CLI" telnet 10.72.10.22

but title is not shows as "Router-Samba CLI", it is shown as Telnet 10.77.10.22.

but same command works FINE with windows 2000

COULD any one help to display "Router-Samba CLI" as title.

or Could you suggest if any other command can be used.

This is very much important for me as I am using router name instead of ip in all the placess.
Accually I am calling this command from my application. where user can launch multiple session on different router. Why is it important for it to give the name rather than the ip??I could be wrong, but I think that XP telnet overrides the title option, so you may not be able to change this. You could try using a different telnet client altogether. I strongly recommend >PuTTY<.

Solve : View file types crashes?

Answer»

When I go to control panel > folder options > FILE types. It starts to display the file types and then the file types window and the control panel window dissapear.
Also if I go to windows exolorer and click tools > folder options > file types it starts to SHOW the file types and then I GET a send error report to microsoft window and if I look at the details of the error there is a 0xc0000005 error.
I have checked my memory and it is fine. This is the only problem I an having with the computer. Every thing else works fine.
Thanks
Dan
If it is Windows 2000, install the latest service pack:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311278

DocNo it is windows xp with SP2
I have discovered where the problem is.
It is somewhere in the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT Section but there is so many entries in there and I don't know exactly which one or ones are causing the problem.
Does anyone know of a way to find the problem without having to one by one eliminate each entry and see if it fixes the problem.
I was going to export the key and then delete every entry but I think that is dangerous and very time consuming.
Thanks
Dan
It could be a bad device driver, or other cause:

Solve : Memory could not be 'written' and screen "cracks"?

Answer»

Two Questions. But first,

Not sure what exactly to post for comp info, so here goes:

Microsoft Windows XP
Professional
Version 2002
SP2
23.9GB of 57.2GB used
AMD Athlon XP 2000+
1.67GHz
512 MB of RAM

Ok? Now, to the point.
First-
When I'm playing certain games (mainly WarCraft: RoC and FT) The game closes and this is the message I get:

No, this probablem is NOT limited to only Warcraft, it happens in other games too. I have tryed reinstalation, no success. System RESTORE? Nothing. The computer was custom made from scratch, so if you cant think of anything, could it be something connected wrong and if so, what?

Second-
If it doesnt give me this message, then it does something else. The speakers will make a crackeling sound, and then the image on the screen will look like its "broken". Cant TAKE a screenshot b/c the comp freezes up. It displaces images and there are "cracks" in the screen... could this be from my graphics card? I dont know much about comps, so if thats way off, dont flame lol.

Any help to either ques is much loved. Is this a LEGAL copy of the game(s)?
Somethimes, copied/pirated games will do this, it just happens. It could also be a memory problem, but I am not too sure.Yes, it is a legal copy of the game. Brand new actually- I cracked my old disc after 3 yrs and BOUGHT a new set w/ brand new keys literally 3 days ago. Problem has happened both before AND after the new version was bought. When i first installed it, it was from a scartched disc, so i thought that was the issue and unistalled/reinstalled the game using the new discs but to no avail. And again, this issue is not limited to this single game. If it is a memory problem, is the solution a new part I would need or a some type of program?Try disabling other running programs, especially Norton if you have it.:-/ ive tried. Closed all non-system programs using the task manager> proscesses. I even went risky and shut down AVG, my main anti-virus program. Used my good FRIEND google and searched for every running progress before closing them all to check for viruses or questionable programs- I either knew what every caused every process or it was a nessasary process. Is Windows and all your drivers up to date from the manufacturer's websites?oui. I check monthly. :-/ lol, im just killing everything aint i... but again, im no nothing of computers but still suspect either somethings hooked up wrong, a faulty part *b/c im not usre where he got em from*, or something is funny w/ my graphics card *mainly regarding the "cracking"*What graphics card do you have?umm... im very unsure if this is it, but in My Computer the folder is
NVDIA > WIN2KXP > 81.94 > a bunch of files.
I know it has to DO WITH the graphics card, but unsure if IT IS the graphics card... well, the card is a part right? so i mean, it should at least say what card it is im using... i thinktryed to reinstall the driver...

NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200

has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatability with Windows XPDon't worry about the windows testing, microsoft would have you using drivers that are 2 years old.well... i now have a NVDIA icon in the task bar that ive nvr seen before, which means i changed something... ill test the game later on and post the results. But supposing it is a memory problem, what would cause that?Test your RAM just to be sure.
http://www.memtest.com

Edit: http://www.memtest86.com/ did you mean memtest86? and if so, its too complicated for me
It's easy, just download the file, double click it & it will create a floppy for you.
Then just boot your computer to the floppy and let it rip for an hour or so.

Solve : Windows Time?

Answer»

Hey if any one can help me i have a little problem

im TRYING to write a batch file that will check the time on a time server and then change my time if the differance is LESS than 10 mins.

but when i try to run NET TIME /DOMAIN:ntp.maths.tcd.ie

it just returns the error , cannot find DC, it happend if i try to use time.windows.com as well, and i know that one works cause ive sync'ed my clock in the time menu, but i need to know the clock is not going to get a realy wrong value some day that im not at my PC to notice.

if any one can help i be very thankfull.

im on XP but i may need to do this on 2000 and 2003 as wellWith XP, why not use the built-in feature for synchronization of time? To do this, go to Control Panel, Date and Time Properties, select the INTERNET Time tab, and check the box for "Automatically synchronize with an Internet time server".

I don't know whether Win 2000 and Server 2003 have the same feature. You always Google on Internet time synchronization; I believe there's plenty of info and tools already available for this. The net time command only works if you're logged into a domain controller (e.g. Windows 2003 Server or a Linux SAMBA server). For time synchronisation otherwise, you need a client program, such as >Automachron<, which will do the trick for you, automatically.

Win XP has a built in time synch client, but it's not very satisfactory, having very limited options. Thanks rob ill give that program a try.

i dont realy trust the Windows time client , it made my time change to a very wrong number a few times.Quote

i dont realy trust the Windows time client , it made my time change to a very wrong number a few times.
I'm skeptical. The Windows time update feature only automatically updates once a week, and that is a limitation. But, I doubt very much that it caused major discrepancy in your time. I'd bet something else caused your inaccurate time, such a CMOS battery that may need to be replaced, or some other software or malware.

I just read the info in Windows Help and Support on time sychronization. It points out that a firewall can also prevent the time synchronization to fail, and it advises users to check their firewall settings. I've tested the Windows time update feature with my firewall enabled, and it works.
well it was the pre SP2 windows time that made my PC clock go Off by QUITE a bit , and i need to set up syncked time on a server in my office that i will then use as an SNTP host . and well once a week isent good enuph, and i still dont trust it it is windows after all.

the program rob gave look like it'll do the trick tho

My computer starts up normally, until it gets to the "Starting windows" black screen. But the thing is, it doesn't get to it, it just SITS there. I can try pressing spacebar, sure, that works. But I doesn't let me use my mouse...
Its very wierd.

I've had this problem alot, and I'm afraid I'm going to have the BLUE Screen Stop Error very soon. I've already had it, I just formatted.

here is what my event log has to say...

"Timeout (30000 milliseconds) waiting for the Speed Disk service service to connect. "

"The operation on timed out (time out is configurable via the registry). "

"The device SENT an incorrect response(s) following a mouse reset. "

"Could not set the keyboard indicator lights. "

"Could not set the keyboard typematic RATE and delay. "

"The GBPoll service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action."

"The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block. "
Andrew:

Are you using a USB mouse (with a rectangular connector) or a PS/2 mouse (with a round connector)?

Is this a new mouse?

Have you installed the drivers for the mouse from the CD that came with it?

Is this Windows XP or some other operating system?

Doc

this is a usb mouse with a ps2 connector.
I'm using Windows 2000 SP4

its fairly new.
Like I said I checked my event log, and I had alotta errors come up.Andrew:

Buy a PS/2 or USB mouse without an adapter and use that one instead.

Solve : dissapering memory??

Answer»

alright ... i deleted something that was about 263 mb, and after that it showed i had about 480 mb free SPACE on my hard DRIVE. after about 2 hours i got the little message saying "you have low disc space" and when i checked i only had 30 mb of free space left, i wasnt downloading anything in those 2 hours, so i had roughly 450 mb disc space that just 'dissapeared'. is it POSSIBLE this is a virus that takes memory? or the possibility of downloaded files coming back? thx for the help in advance.even 450 mb is very low disk space...can u tell if you are referring to the hard disk space (C drive)....

if you stil receiving error low disk space, go to Run, type msconfig...clear the start up..restart the comp and try.You may want to delete a lot more before it ceases to function until you solve this mystery. 15% free space is the minimum recommended for Windows to function properly.@ response1: yes i am reffering to C: space, and @#2 i only got roughly 5gigs on my hard drive, deleting alot more things is nearly impossible. i do have another hard drive in my comp but i dont think its recognized in my BIOS, which raises another quick question, i use xp, do i need my xp disc in my cd rom to enter my BIOS? i hit DEL at the startup of my comp and found no mention of anything relevant in the startup settings, thx again. What are your settings for virtual memory? Are you letting Windows manage it? If so, I think that may explain why you see the decrease in free space. In other words, maybe Windows is recalculating the size of virtual memory during one of your computing sessions; this is, recalculating to a larger size. Space set aside for virtual memory is included in the calculation of total space used.

Also, even though you were "not downloading anything", were your browsing websites? If so, your system could be accumulating temporary internet files.yes this is a good point you brought up, i was browsing websites, and opening and closing many programs... the regular stuff, you know. is there a way to edit this?Quote

@ response1: yes i am reffering to C: space, and @#2 i only got roughly 5gigs on my hard drive, deleting alot more things is nearly impossible. i do have another hard drive in my comp but i dont think its recognized in my BIOS, which raises another quick question, i use xp, do i need my xp disc in my cd rom to enter my BIOS? i hit DEL at the startup of my comp and found no mention of anything relevant in the startup settings, thx again.
So, the hard drive's size is 5GB. Is that right? Wow, that's awfully small to be running Win XP. What size is the other hard drive? Has Windows ever recognized it under your current hardware configuration? Is it currently mounted inside the computer and connected to the power cord and data cable?

To limit the amount of space allocated to temporary internet files in IE, go to Tools, Internet Options, and click on the Settings button on the General tab panel. To see your virtual memory settings, right click on My Computer and select Properties, select Advanced, click on Settings, under Performance, Advanced, and then click on the button named Change.

Have you run Windows Disk Cleanup utility?yes, the drive is 5gb, the other hard drive is properly put into my computer and connected etc, it was recognizable before, as well as accessable, until i reformatted my computer. since then my computer has not recognized it.

as for the virtual memory, here is a pic... not sure what it means but maybe you can recommend something for me to do until i get more space? again the help is much appreciated

Ideally, you would be able to leave it as is, since the current setting is probably a good one for many users, with 512MB of RAM. But, under the circumstances, I think you may simply have to experiment some with it. The generally recommended amount of virtual memory is related the amount of RAM installed. I suggest you read this: How can I optimize the Windows 2000/XP/2003 virtual memory (Pagefile)?, and maybe some other references that can found via a Google search on Pagefile sizing.

I'll suggest setting the maximum size to the same size as the minimum size, or 768MB. Again, you'll probably need to experiment and see how your computer runs under certain settings.

And, continue to pursue the problem of the other drive not being recognized, or get a larger drive to replace your 5GB drive.alright i will experiment some and find out what works for me, just 1 more question and im done.

if i had PREVIOUSLY had memory put into a different computer, is it possible to take that memory out and put it in the one i have now?It depends on whether both computers use the same type of memory. Here's a reference: Different RAM Types and its uses. You could visit www.crucial.com or http://www.kingston.com/ and use their memory selector tool; you need to know the make and model of your computer or your motherboard; you can use them to determine the types of memory your two computers use; you don't need to actually make a purchase.

What version of Word, PowerPoint, ETC? Office versions are 97, 2000, 2002, and 2003. There was no Office 98, even though there is a Publisher 98. Publisher 2003 is included in Office 2003, at least some versions. Obviously, Publisher 98 was a stand-alone product.

Still, I would have guessed that Publisher 98 files will open in Publisher 2003. You might Google for some info on this. You're right, soybean - they're supposed to. Perhaps there is a problem with the original file?

Solve : MS Paint on a network?

Answer»

I have installed WinXP Pro on a Windows AD 2000 network of 14 workstations. Users have been set up with My Documents redirected using a GPO to their own space on the server.

MS Paint ignores the redirection and insists on looking at the local drive as a default for saves.

Anyone know a work around for this?mspaint automatically defaults to "My Pictures" on my system. Is this Win XP Pro SP2? Fully up to date system? Do the "My Pictures" folders exist for the users? If not, mspaint probably looks in whatever directory it was told to start up in. In the latter case you can change the shortcut-->"start in" accordingly. That won't be a problem if your users' folders map to a consistent drive LETTER.Nice idea! Thanks

You are, of course, correct. I was being lazy. It actually defaults to the My Pictures folder under Documents and Settings\My Documents on the local hard drive. Yes, using Pro SP2. Yes, all have a consistent drive letter. All I need to do is edit the icon on the shared desktop! I'll give that a try. Thanks for the help.Quote

Can that be tweaked with GPE? (I never use it, since I have Linux servers on my LANs.)Quote

Nope, that didn't work! However, I did manage to tweak the redirection in the GPO and got that to work. Managed to BREAK something else in the PROCESS but that's the way it goes!

Thanks again for the suggestions.Ha! Yes; it's a bit like herding CATS, isn't it?! Good luck.Would this be a good time for Microsoft to take a bow?

Solve : XP fails to boot?

Answer»

Whenever i boot up the pc, it only gets to the windows xp boot screen and then stops. So i have to manually switch off. When i boot up again it goes onto the safe mode select screen. If i select "last known good configeration" it will boot up normally, except that found new hardware pops up,(this does'nt happen every time) eventually installing Matrox Graphics Millenium G200 AGP. I can then use the pc as normall. When i shut down and then reboot it does the same and so i end up booting with last known good configeration.

All scans with Adaware, Spybot Search&Destroy and AVG as well as online scans with Panda and Bitdefender came up clean.

Any help would be greatly appreciated..

Yes i did do system restore, but it did'nt improve things at all.
I ALSO used the c d repair console, and now i only have 1 restore point.

I get 1 SHORT beep, although it has done this since i first got it about 10 months ago (brought secondhand)

Have tried to boot with all u s b devices removed.

Had trouble installing a 256mb pc100 memory stick. It is currently in place but is only picked up as a 128mb stick. If it is removed it still has the same problems.

Hope that this is helpfull.

Colgate I decided to formatt and start over, but xp would not install. So i thought that i would install 2k then upgrade to xp.
I was able to install 2k, which i was unable to update easily as had problems with usb bandwidth. So my broadband external modem would'nt connect.

I then upgraded too xp, and all is well. Just hope it continues to be problem free.
I have set automatic updates to notify only, and i check them out prior to downloading and/or installing.

Thanks for all help. [smiley=thumbsup.gif]By the way, you don't have to install 2000 to install XP in normal machines. It sounds like yours has other issues which will need to be addressed sooner or later.hey im not that good wit computers but i had the same problem wit mine and it turned out to be the harddrive was fried so ................. :-/ hope this helps

Solve : Weird thing on Windows 2000 professional.?

Answer»

Hey guys, I work at a small boys and girls club type of place that has a little comptuer lab for kids to do their homework and projects and such, most of them work fine except for one. When booted up I get this message:

"*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0x8186C3D0, 0xC0000032, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)
INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

If this is your first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your COMPUTER. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated.
RUN CHKDSK/F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

Refer to your Getting Started manual for more information on troubleshooting Stop errors."

The thing is, no matter what I can't get on the computer to check for viruses. When I press F8 to go into the booting setting like Safe Mode, if I click it, it loads until giving this message.

As I said before were like a Boys and Girls club that offers not a lot of help in terms of "Computer Tech" we have someone on the payroll I think that really has no idea what he is doing.

The computer has been down for a while and I can't think up any reasons. Any help from you guys? Thanks for any input. The first thing I would suggest is to take the drive out of the machine and slave(insert the drive as a secondary drive) it to another machine. Hopefully when you boot the OS of the good machine it should detect the problem and repair it. If not run chkdsk /f [driveletter] when you get into Windows. This is a very common problem where I work and I would say that 90% of the time this resolves that issue.
Another thing that you could try is when you boot the machine hit the F8 as you did before. Than use the "LAST known good configuration" option. This should restore the machine to a known last good STATE. This works on occasion, but you may be too far along for this option.
Couple other causes could be a bad driver install, bad software install, or bad drive itself. If it's a DELL machine they have great diagnostics that you can download for each of their machines. Go to their site and download the diags and make the disks on a working machine. Than boot up the troubled machine with the disks. Just select the drive test because every other test never finds a problem.
Barring it not being a physical drive problem XP you would be able to fix this with sytem restore easily(if it GOES through that is.) Being that the machine is Windows 2000 other than what I listed theirs really not much you can do.
All is not lost because worst case scenario is rebuilding the machine and you can have that done in no time. It's a bit of a pain, but it's no biggie. The data is the most important thing. Good luck.

Solve : MS Outlook/webmail - downloading contacts?

Answer»

I am attempting to configure MS Outlook 2000 to manage my email. I got it to work, but now I want to download my Address Book, and cannot figure it out.

-I exported my webmail address book and saved it to the desktop as a .csv file.
-I went to File > Import/Export, Import from another program or file > Comma Separated Values, but it tells me I need to download some feature from the source CD, which I don't have.

Am I doing this correctly? is there any easier WAY i can do it?Bung your Outlook/Office CD in the drive. Make sure all of Outlook's import/export filters are installed. There you go.Quote

it tells me I need to download some feature from the source CD, which I don't have.

By "source CD", do you mean the Office CD? So, you don't have it, right?
No, I don't have the source CD. and I'm not sure if my coworkers will have access to it either.
Is there a way to do this without it?

Also, if I have my mail organized into folders ONLINE, is it possible to download all the folders as well? How would I do this?
Or must everything I want to transfer be in the Inbox?I'm not sure this will work but here's an IDEA. Open Outlook Express and import your CSV file into the Address Book. Then, open Outlook Contacts and try import the OE Address list into Outlook's Contacts. Then, use Contacts as a source of addresses for Outlook email.

As far as DOWNLOADING messages from your webmail service, I believe you'll have to move everything into your online Inbox in order to get it downloaded to Outlook. Of COURSE, a systematic approach might help keep your messages organized. In other words, you could move one folder at a time into your Inbox, download it, move the messages into other folders in Outlook, then repeat the procedure for another online folder, etc.Quote
By "source CD", do you mean the Office CD? So, you don't have it, right?
Oops. It would help if I read more carefully, wouldn't it?

Why do you not have the installation CD?

Why does WINDOWS ME suck so much? I liked 98se and 2000 but ME?>You're not alone< in FEELING this way!Wow I thought I was just paranoid. But I do have a likely explantion for such an occorence. COINCIDENCE than Windows 2000 was released right afer ME? I think not. It was a very cleverly developed marketing ploy invented my Microsoft. ME was the prototype for 2000 and was forced to be finished erlie so that people would think that it sucked so much that that they couldent resist buying 2000. Then to push the Pentium I and II with MMX users to buy Pentium III and 4s Windows 2000 doesnt have MMX support. Infact MMX just slows down video preformance under Windows 2000. I havent tryed XP yet though. Also I might just be crazy but if you think about it it makes perfect sence. Even if my sentinces dont.Without a doubt, Windows XP professional is (at last) a far superior operating system to the other dross MS has pushed out for home users. The only real drawback for me is its relatively heavy hardware requirements. So it's Win98SE for older hardware and WinXP Pro for newer hardware. For desktop systems I wouldn't consider ANY other MS O/S.I would half to agree with you there. But just one prolem... The only copy of XP i have is in Aribic. last time I buy software from goodwill. Although I included the ME disk with the AOL disks and used it for target practice. They also MAKE good coasters I still use AOL discs for coasters. Anyone NEED any? PULL! *BANG!* *Cop sirens* Crap hide! Useualy what I do. Well anyway. Does anyone agree with my thorie on ME yet?

Solve : WinME - won't boot up?

Answer»

Help! I know I have an old operating system - it's on the old computer that we have for the kids. That being said, last WEEK I downloaded updates from Microsoft for ME, a few days ago the computer would not shut down. Today, it would not boot up. You can hear the computer running, it will get to the point were the background is displayed, but nothing else. No START MENU, no icons.
I have put in the system restoration disc, but nothing happened.

I run virus scans and have anti virus programs with regular updates.

The other thing that has happened with this computer, when I run the virus scan, it finds 3 programs that "possible problems" - it won't let me delete, quarentine or fix them. Since that occured (Christmas) - when we run a defrag it goes so far and then it says that 'something is writing to the disc' and starts over. Then it goes further than it did before on the disc, but GETS stopped and starts over again. This continues until the defrag is complete.

I am at a loss with what to do. I didn't find much help on the Microsoft website. Anyone have any ideas?

thank you...... :-?What if you boot to safe mode and try a system restore?

It sounds like in the end the best route would be to format and reinstall WIndows after saving any important data, especially if this hasn't been done in a while.

If it is a hardware problem Windows cannot fix it, but you need to make sure the system is clean if you do not want to reinstall at this time, once it gets running.Thank you for the response!

I've booted from safe mode and still the same response. While in safe-mode - I put the restore disc in and it did nothing. The screen stayed with the words 'safe-mode' in each corner and nothing else.

Is there any hope?
Thanks again for the response!Do you have a real ME disk to reinstall with or just a restore CD? What is the manufacturer make/model? Do you have important data there to back up for safety? It is a Gateway computer, model ATXSTF Performance 866 and it did not come with the original ME disc - just 3 marked 'restoration disc'.

We bought this computer in 2000, so it's fairly old and has seen it's share of stuff.

I'd like to keep it just a while longer - but I may have to go buy a new ONE.

Thanks again for your help.If you have a virus scanner operational during defrag it can cause problems with starting over repeatedly.

If you want to restore it, you just boot with the appropriate CD in the drive. Try all 3 one at a time and see what happens.

Solve : Setup won't disappear?

Answer»

I had recently tried to INSTALL Win2k on a new drive I had set up as a slave. The installation didn't work (a needed file wasn't ABLED to be copied), so I ended up cloning the drive with Ghost. The new drive is now master (the old is off of the computer), but at startup, I get two options for OS: one win2k and the other win2k setup. How do i get the setup OS off? Thanks

933mhz P3, 256mb, Win2K SP4.Post your boot.ini fileNever on a first date!

I knew you'd come through, GX1_man!

Here it is.. i looked at it and see that it the set up is there.. just don't know how to change it

Code: [Select][Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional Setup"
If you have a regular, not a 'restore' CD, make sure the BIOS to boot CD before Hard Disk. Boot the Win2K CD and, instead of Setup, TAKE the immediate R for Repair.

Give the command

BootCfg /Rebuild

and then exit.

Try that. It is the EASIEST and most PAINLESS way.The CD doesn't boot. I had to use the 4 floppy set up originally to set up installation. I can try that tomorrow, once I make all the floppies again, of course!

I'll post of my success (or lack of) tomorrow/

Solve : Windows XP Speed UP!?

Answer»

I know im new and all that it doesnt mean i cant give advice so heres a guide what ive written it will hopefully help you speed up your computer without formating and reinstalling Windows its mainly for Windows XP .

Please reply to let us Know what you think
================================================== ===========

1. Convert a volume to NTFS

To convert a volume to NTFS from the command prompt
Open the Command Prompt window.
In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

For example, typing convert D: /fs:ntfs would format drive D: with the ntfs format.

Notes

To open a command prompt, click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Command Prompt.
You can convert FAT or FAT32 volumes to NTFS with this command.

I also Recommend you to run your OS in a HDD or Partition NOT bigger than 15 GB. ( I'm not gonna discuss this or any other recommendations LOL) Txs
================================================== ==================================================

2.Disable the XP loading screen

To speed up your boot process slightly, disable the Windows XP loading screen. This can be accomplished easily by opening the MSCONFIG utility ('start\run and type msconfig'), selecting the 'boot.ini' tab and checking the /NOGUIBOOT option.

When you boot your system, you will see a black screen in between POST and the welcome screen from now on.

================================================== ================================================
3. Eliminate unwanted fonts to increase boot speed

The Windows XP control panel contains a 'fonts' directory which holds all the fonts currently installed on your system. These can come from Windows itself or from an application such as Word.

Windows checks and loads these fonts during the startup process, therefore having a large amount of font files can cause performance to drag during startup. The simple solution for this (if you do not expect to use the majority of these fonts constantly) is to MOVE the unnecessary fonts to a new directory elsewhere on the hard disk, preserving them in case they are needed, but preventing them from loading upon startup.

To do this:

Create a new directory called 'font backup' or something similar on your c: drive.

Go to 'start\control panel\fonts' and select all fonts (for now, we will be more selective later). Drag and drop all the fonts into the backup folder you just created. Things will get garbled for a moment, never fear. Windows XP will automatically re-install the base fonts that it needs to display text into the fonts folder in a second or two.

Now you have the bare minimum of fonts installed. Go through the backup folder and cherry pick the fonts that you are sure to use (like Times New Roman or Arial).

If you removed a large volume of fonts, your system should now boot faster.
================================================== ================================================== ===
4. Disable unneeded devices in device manager

A quick fix that can make XP boot faster is to disable any unused devices in the Windows XP device manager. For example if you have a integrated SOUND card or video card that you have upgraded, or if you do not use a floppy drive on your system, it pays to disable these devices in device manager.

The same goes for extra network cards. Of course, the standard rule of thumb applies here: If you do not know what it is, leave it alone.

To disable unneeded devices in device manager:

Right click on 'my computer' and select 'properties.' From the 'hardware' tab, select 'device manager.' Expand the various categories to locate unused devices. Right click the devices and select 'disable.'

Increasing shutdown speed by reducing wait times part 1

Windows XP stores a couple of values in its registry which are responsible for determining how long to wait before SHUTTING down (killing) open applications and services once the shutdown command has been given.

By editing these two settings and changing them to lower values, you can considerably decrease the amount of time that Windows XP needs to successfully shut itself down. The first part of this tweak deals with setting the amount of time Windows will take to kill open applications on shutdown.

Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\'
Highlight the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' value.
Set it to '1000' (the default should be 20000).
Now highlight the 'HungAppTimeout' value
Set it to '1000' also.
================================================== ================================================== ====
Increasing shutdown speed by reducing wait times part 2

The second part of this tip changes the same settings, this time for all users on the system.

Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop'
Highlight the 'WaitToKillAppTimeout' value.
Set it to '1000' (the default should be 20000).
Now highlight the 'HungAppTimeout' value.
Set it to '1000' also.

Auto kill tasks on shutdown

To allow Windows XP to close non-responsive applications automatically upon shutdown:

Open REGEDIT and navigate to 'HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop'

Highlight the value 'AutoEndTasks.'

Change the value to '1'

XP will now be able to close hung applications without user input during the shutdown process.
================================================== =================================================
1. run "regedit";
2. goto [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\PrefetchParameters\EnablePrefetcher];
3. Set the value to either 0-Disable, 1-App launch prefetch, 2-Boot Prefetch, 3-Both ("3" is recommended).
4. reboot.
================================================== ===============================================

BROWSING SPEEDUP

Then run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Explorer\RemoteComputer\NameSpace
In the left hand pane highlight these 2 subkeys:

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF} = Scheduled Tasks
{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D} = Shared Printers

and delete them: right-click on each -> select Delete -> click OK.

RECOMMENDED: Export (BACKUP) this Registry key to a REG file FIRST, to be able to restore it (by running the REG file) if necessary. In Regedit: highlight the key name in the left hand pane -> click "Registry" from the menu -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type a file name in the "File name" field -> browse to the destination of your choice -> push the Save button.

This Registry change takes effect immediately.
Just start MS IE while connected to the network/internet to see the difference.

FYI: Upgrading to a future MS Internet Explorer release or reinstalling it may add these values to your Registry *again*, therefore you may need to delete them *again* after (re)installing MS IE.

================================================== ================================================== ===

Windows NT4/2000/ME/XP/2003 users ONLY:
"This Registry hack might fix your CPU Priority if you don't have a PnP BIOS.
increasing CPU priority by 50 to 100%.
Run Regedit and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\PriorityControl

or create it if not present: right-click on an empty spot -> select New -> Key -> paste "PriorityControl" (no quotes) into the type-in box -> click OK to save.
Now highlight this key, and in the right hand pane create a new DWORD [REG_DWORD] Value called "Win32PrioritySeparation" (no quotes) -> double-click on it -> check the Decimal box -> type 1 -> click OK to save.
When this baby is set to 1, the foreground (active) application has more CPU power than the background (inactive) apps (if any), and if you set the value to 2, you get even more power to the foreground app:

0 = Foreground and background applications equally responsive.
1 = Foreground application more responsive than background.
2 = Best foreground application response time.
The maximum value allowed is 26 (Hex) or 38 (Decimal).
Play around with these values till you find your own "sweet spot".
BEWARE: Higher settings will drag down system resources considerably.
================================================== ==================================================

Launch apps with desired priority setting

This tweak will launch most executables with the priority setting you want it to have.

Let's say you have a game installed called HIGH NEEDS and the executable is called HN.exe

Here's what to do:

-Create a new textfile in the game-app wathever-directory (let's say C:\HN), but instead of giving it the .txt extension you name it HN.bat
-Right-click this file and choose 'Edit', you'll see it'll open notepad. Put this line in:
cmd /c start /High HN.exe
-Save (make sure you save it as .bat, not as .txt) and close.

Now create a shortcut to this file and place it on your desktop. Every time you doubleclick this shortcut HIGH NEEDS will open with priority set to 'high'. (ofcourse you can also create a batchfile on your desktop, containing the full path of the app you want to start but the nice thing of creating a shortcut is you can give it an ICON).

These are all the settings: Realtime, High, AboveNormal, Normal, BelowNormal, Low.

Disable performance counters

Like Windows 2000, Windows XP has a performance monitor utility (found in administrative tools) which can track several areas of your PC's performance. Everything from CPU use to hard drive access can be tracked and graphed. The information for this utility comes from several performance counter services which run behind the scenes, gathering data for the monitor.

If you have no use for this information, it's a good idea to disable the counters, since they take up system resources. Unfortunately, this is rather hard to do without the use of additional software. Fortunately, Microsoft has made the necessary software freely available on their website.

The Extensible Performance Counter List utility can be used to permanently disable these performance counters.

First download and install the utility, then run the Exctrlst.exe utility, found in 'c:\program files\resource kit\'

Select each line in the 'Extensible performance counters' window and clear the 'performance counters enabled' button below. You must do this separately for each counter. When done, just exit the utility.

Now if you load the performance monitor, you will see that it has no information available to it.

Microsoft claims Longhorn will be, er, faster

The only reason why its faster is they added a superfetch feature to the prefetcher. If you look at the key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management\Prefetcher

you will notice in windows xp

EnablePrefetcher = 3 and you will notice in windows longhorn
EnableSuperfetch = 1

Well, guess what? You can put the EnableSuperfetch = 1 in windows xp and get the same speed.

Wow, Microsoft just added a feature that was already there in xp.
================================================== ================================================== =

Speed up the Start Menu

The default speed of the Start Menu is pretty slow, but you can fix that by editing a Registry Key. Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Control Panel \ Desktop \ MenuShowDelay

By default, the value is 400. Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up. (The perfect value in my opinion is 150)

If this doesn't work for some reason, then you might try the following: Navigate to Display Properties then Appearance then Effects and turn off the option titled Show menu shadow. You will get much better overall performance
================================================== ================================================== ===

This tweak removes the shortcut arrow

Open Regedit.exe and navigate to the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Shell Icons

Backup the key.
In the right-pane, create a new String value named "29"
Double-click 29 and set it's value as follows:
C:\Windows\System32\shell32.dll,50 (an empty icon)

Close Registry Editor.
To apply the changes instantly, follow this

Right-click Desktop, choose Properties
Click the Appearance Tab.
Click Advanced button
Choose Icon from the drop-down list
Set it's size to 31 and press OK, OK.
The changes will be applied now. Repeat the above steps and then set the Icon size back to 32 (defaults). The above steps are required to force Windows to redraw the icons. Even Tweak UI does this.

Solve : Emergency Repair Disk?

Answer»

Is it possible to make a ERD from one Windows 2000 computer and use it to recover another 2000 machine? SHORT Story: Used a tool that modified the registry, upon reboot I got a nice, shiny Blue Screen. All Googling points to a (surprise!) registry ERROR. No ERD was created for the machine, so I thought it might work if I used the 2k 'puter next to it. I've got a 2k upgrade CD that I'm starting up with.

Also, is their a difference between an Emergency Repair Disk and an Emergency Recovery Disk? I'm getting conflicting reports.

Thanks.

-Oober

[highlight]EDIT: Quick Update. The FIRST ERD I created (the one that errored out) copied the registry onto the disk. On a whim I made a second ATTEMPT, this time choosing not to copy the registry. This time the disk worked on the erring computer... sort of. It went through the MOTIONS of repairing the files, but the system still crashes on kernel load. Same registry related error. Rats. I need a clean registry, but when I copy it to a disk, Setup on the crashed machine won't accept it.[/highlight]A little light reading for you, I hope it helps.

Solve : Windows ME Service Pack CD?

Answer» WINDOWS ME is installed on a P-III which will never be connected to the internet. I have not been able to locate a Microsoft CD containing ME updates. I know that Microsoft has Service Pack CDs for WinXP, Office 2003, Office XP, Office 2000 & Office 97. Can anyone help me locate WinME updates on CD?Why bother? Most OS updates from Microsoft are to FIX security issues that can arise from being online. If you won't be using that computer online, don't worry about not getting the updates."As one who is dead to the world does not need to drink of the WATER of the Earth, a computer that is dead to the Internet does not need to drink of security updates of the Internet."

soybean is absolutely correct. If your computer does not need to connect to the Internet, you can USE your computer without fear of not having a vital update.

Solve : windows xp when on ie?

Answer»

whwn logged as administrator can access sites that can no access fully when logged as normal userIt depends what rights the user has set up and preferences in IE. Can you be specific?have internet priv set as low . can not change any thing ie access , as a user but when logged as admin can access full access to sites normal users can not. this is driving me nutsSteve:

Windows XP Home has just two user types: Administrator and Limited User (or what Windows 2000 called a User account).

If you have Windows XP Professional, you can change the Limited User to a Power User, if you disable simple file sharing, and then change the user account to power user in Computer Management. A Power User should have no problems using IE under normal circumstances. Let us KNOW if you have XP Pro and need help.

Docyes I do have xp pro and would be grateful for your advise.Try changing the Limited User account to a Power User:

1. Right-click My Computer and click Manage
2. In Computer Management, double-click LOCAL Users and Groups, and click Groups
3. Right-click Power Users and click Properties
4. In the Power User Properties dialog box, click Add
5. Type the user name and click Check Names (you should SEE the computer name followed by the user name appear in the box)
6. Click OK and OK and close Computer Management
7. Restart your computer

You should be able to use IE with the user account that you have now changed to a Power User (essentially, a power user can do almost everything an Administrator can do but change an Administrator's settings).

Let us know how it goes.
Doc
Went through and changed user to Power User and than visited one of the sites I could access as administrator. Still did not view correctly , however It gave me a message to install macromedia. This was already installed and WORKED when logged as administrator. I removed macromedia and re installed now working.

McAfee comes with a Virus Scan Boot Disk, which allows you to scan for viruses from one single floppy disk (Symantec requires more than one disk).
When you get your computer up and running, create a boot disk by clicking START, PROGRAMS, McAFEE, and Create Rescue Disk.
Follow the simple step by step instructions.
If your computer does not start, just put the disk in while you power it on, and all should be well.

Solve : Windows2000 boots to blue screen?

Answer»

Hello, hope you can help - apologies if this is an obvious question, it's all still fairly new to me.

My other computer (which is about 5-6 years OLD) suddenly switched off last night and now won't boot into Windows2000 via safe mode or via CD.

It's gets to the Windows START-up screen - pauses, then brings up a blue screen which includesthe text:-

STOP: c0000145 (application error) failed to initialize properly.....click OK to terminate...etc

It tells me about safe mode, uninstalling any new hardware and to disable BIOS memory options.

The only thing I noticed before it went off last night, is that the clock read December 31st 1997! I've been trying to boot up this morning and when I went into the BIOS, the date was wrong again.

Could this be the battery? I haven't used this particular computer for about 4 months.

Thanks in advance.

WilkoIf the clock does not hold the correct time ALWAYS start by replacing the CMOS battery. Thanks, I'll try that tomorrow.

WilkoWilko:

If the battery is not one that is hard-wired to the motherboard, you should be able to replace it for less than a buck (or pound or euro). It might be small and flat like a wristwatch battery.

DocHi all

Thanks for the info.

I've replaced the battery - the good news is the clock is now working properly so changing the battery has helped.

The bad news is I'm still getting the same blue screen as it STARTS to go into Windows2000.

Any ideas as to what I can try next? This is all i could find:

Answer»

*New user alert *

Hey there, set up is Pentium 3, 800mhz, 10gb hd, 128mb ram running windows 2000 pro.

Everything was running FINE until I got the internet hooked up with a DSL modem today. Now system runs so slow, i have numerous MESSAGES popping up saying 'bad image' and when i open the task manager it just closes straight away so I CANT even tell whats running. Also having trouble just opening most programs. I reckon a reboot is in order but I dont have the key for the Windows 2000 pro disc anymore.

Any help/ideas most APPRECIATED.

Solve : updating xp sp2 genuine version?

Answer»

Yeah it made me laugh, could just see Tucker scratching his head...you are very "on the ball" if you KNOW what I mean!
Thanks for your help...I've still got an duff copy of windows xp and can't update it but I have managed to download google earth for my 8 YEAR old...I think that's where this started!
Why does an 8 year old want google earth??Two things:

1. This started because Microsoft will *never* allow updates for fake Windows'.

2. We can't help you understand your 8-year old. We're techhies, not psychologists. Sounds strange I have SP1 but no problem with updating or running google earth.Oh no, Google Earth has nothing to do with this. It's the fake Windows that's causing a problem. I don't BLAME anyone but whoever gave bek the disc for this one. Anyhoo, bek will need a legit copy of Windows, if he wants the updates to work. Sorry, bek. Anyways, if you have any earlier copies of Windows, you can just buy the upgrade version, and insert the earlier disc when it asks for a previous version. It doesn't have to install the older version - it just has to be a full disc.

If you don't have an earlier disc, it's OK - you just need to get the more expensive full disc. And in the meantime, I recommend backing up any files you need, because I would recommend a format right before you install the legit XP. Don't format now - but backup your necessary files. The reason I suggest a format is so that any traces of an illigitemate copy can be removed. If there's even a hint, Microsoft will reject you again and snub you if you call Tech Support. So let's get it cleared before the install.

Mandatory reminder: Formatting a drive destroys all files on the hard drive. No exeptions.Quote

Microsoft *always* allow critical updates and sp2 is available for download here-

There wont be a problem INSTALLING it it on an *illegal* system. Thanks again for your help...I never thought you were psychologists, I was just being friendly.
My daughter was trying to install the google toolbar and google earth, it was google tool bar that would not load without the service pack2 updates. I downloaded google earth on it's own in the end with no problem.
By the way my real name is Rebekah!Google toolbar=bad. Any toolbar=risk.

Solve : clean up laptop?

UG! First CCleaner doesn't work! Second no one has helped me do what i want to do so read the first thing! For the record ....... from the MicroSoft site .........

Validation is required for all genuine Windows downloads on Microsoft Download Center. It is also required by the Windows Update service for users of Windows XP including Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Media Center Edition. All users can access security updates via Automatic Updates. [highlight]Genuine Windows downloads are available, without [/highlight]validation, to customers running Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows Vista, and Windows NT 4.0 with Service PACK 3. Genuine Windows downloads are not available for older versions of Windows (Windows 95, Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 2, and earlier), or non-Microsoft OPERATING systems.

dl65 Format the hard drive and then install dos cd drivers and mouse on it. Oakcdrom.sys should do-
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/software/oakcdrom.sys
You need himem.sys and emm386.exe in config.sys as well as mouse.com and mscdex.exe in autoexec.

DEVICE=HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:OFF
DEVICE=EMM386.EXE AUTO
DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:CD001

MOUSE
MSCDEX /D:CD001
Easier still just copy the CONTENTS of a win98 bootdisk and alter the paths to suit.

I've got 4 win98 computers myself and Ive never seen the windows genuine advantage check in any of them or in anybody elses. Its not there cos win98 update uses a DIFFERENT system to xp-
xp - http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx?ln=en-us
98 - http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
Its not possible for a 98 computer to use wgav as it doesnt exist in win98 so how its there is a complete mystery.

Solve : Removing user passwords in XP from slave drive??

Answer»

My 5 year old Dell will not boot, but I can access the hard drive in our new computer, so most of our files are accessible. (We contacted dell about the boot PROBLEM, the power supply NEEDS to be replaced, but the part isn’t available anymore so we just got a new computer) However, since I’m an accountant & work from home, I had a password on my login name, protecting many of my client’s files. Unfortunately, I can’t access my “My Documents” on the old hard drive because of the password. My user file folder says there are zero files, which I’m sure isn’t true.

Can anyone help me with either booting either of our new COMPUTERS (new Dell or new eMachines) with the old hard drive as master (instead of slave) or with removing the password on the slave hard drive? Any suggestions would be most appreciated! I know the password, I’m just not sure how to get rid of it!

Oh, and all the computers are desktops and all are running Windows XP home.

Thanks!

Christine (who will NEVER forget to back up client files again!)
CKB:

If you chose the option to make the files for that user name private, then Windows XP has encrypted them and you will not be able to access them. It is a security feature of Windows XP and Windows 2000 to keep someone who steals your computer from accessing your files.

You might be able to purchase a used power supply of the same kind through eBay (or at least purchase a computer of EXACTLY the same Dell make and model number). That way you can have a hardware technician install the power supply you purchase in the old computer or the hard drive in the used computer you purchase and get it working just long enough for you to have windows no longer make the files private.

DocWhat model Dell is this? It's hard to believe that Dell does not have a power supply for this. I can still get new ones for 7 year old Optiplex at a reasonable price through them. Ones "off the shelf" at the local STORE may not work, but this seems the best fix.
