Solve : start up pains?

Answer»

on start up my laptop RUNNING windows 2000 does two annoying things:
1) it automatically opens the 'my documents' folder

2) i get a MESSAGE warning "can not find c:\logon.exe

doesn't seem to affect much, but i have to close both before i can get on with things.

any suggestions?

thanksThese are both symptomatic of malware infection; the first being caused by the DlDer trojan, the second by the improper removal of an SDBot worm variant.
Carry out the procedures listed in this post and post a Hijackthis logfile here when done.
If possible, zip the logfile and attach it rather than post it.o.k. i'll try that.

Solve : HELP!  TROUBLE W/BURNING MUSIC CD'S....?

Answer»

I recently upgraded my OS from WindowsME to Windows XP. I have tried to burn some music cd's with Nero & Easy CD Creator on my cdrw but it just doesn't work [smiley=cry.gif]....

Any suggestions will help and thank you so very much!the first QUESTION is have you updated your burning software? which versions are you running. cd creator 5 will not run on xp without patches. i'm sure earlier versions won't run at all.Upgrading a current OS to another is risky. Upgrading WinME to WinXP is asking for problems!
Did you actually upgrade or did you format and then install XP?
What versions of Nero and EasyCD are you using? Off the top of my head, I believe that Easy CD Creator 5.3.5 and Nero 6.6.0.5 are the minimum requirements for XP compatibility and functionality.Pardon my ignorance here, but I thought XP came out after ME and is newer. At least, according to this page, "Combines Windows NT/2000 professional series with the Windows 98 and ME consumer series into a single operating system." Windows ME has to be out already to be integrated, right?

Sorry if I'm just confused, but I'm pretty sure a couple of my computers are upgraded from ME. No wait, that one got formatted because of a virus. Anyhoo... am I misunderstanding you?
I agree Anayway, have you tried updating your drivers for the burner? Windows Updates?

Yes, I have tried updating the drivers or are there other drivers I can download for a CD Writer IDE 1610 (STANDARD) :-?Sorry for any confusion! By current OS, I meant the already installed OS.

It's not a good IDEA to upgrade as many remnants and any problems of the former OS are left behind and these have a nasty habit of coming back in the future and biting you! Anyone who sets up systems on a regular basis will tell you that a fresh installation is the wisest course to choose.
As a slight aside, an upgrade CD can be used to perform a full installation from scratch without an OS being present; the XP installation routine will merely ask you to insert a previous OS installation CD (Win98, ME etc) to check for previous ownership.

As for CD drivers, these cannot really be upgraded. CD and DvD burners are only burners if the correct software is installed to utilise them. Look for any useable updates to Nero and Roxio and then uninstall both. REBOOT and try the INBUILT XP CD burning application. You won't be able to burn music CDs with this but for now, we just want to see what's happening.
If that works OK, reinstall Nero (Do not install InCD!) and apply the updates.Try out your burner.
If all is well, and if you think you need it, install EasyCD, apply the updates and test.

Solve : Help installing Win 98 on new hard drive?

Answer»

Hi, I'm a noobie to the forums and I'm not an expert with computers so forgive me if my question is stupid.

I bought a new 160GB Maxtor hard drive and Windows 98 to install on my computer. I unscrewed my old hard drive, and then screwed in the new one. I then followed the instructions in the Windows 98 book, which were to insert the Windows 98 STARTUP Disk into the floppy drive, followed by the CD. I then typed 1, pressed ENTER and it begins the set up process for a moment but then a blue screen appears that says:

Setup cannot install Windows 98 on your computer.

Your computer does not have a hard disk, your hard disk is not functioning correctly, or your hard disk requires a SPECIAL device driver. Contact your computer vendor for assistance.

Then my only option is to press F3 and exit the setup. So then I'm back to the blank black screen that now says:

E:\WIN98>

If I type in setup it again prepares to setup but then says:

Cannot create a temporary directory.
If you have HPFS or NTFS installed on your hard drive, you will need to create an MS-DOS boot partition to set up Windows.

Now I am completely clueless as what to do from here. I just want to get Windows 98 up and running along with the new hard drive. This is part of a project I am doing for school, so any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks.

-ScottEnsure that the master/slave jumper settings are correct and that hard drive detection in your BIOS is set to "Auto".
But....... Even if the BIOS sees the hard drive, I suspect that Win98 will have great difficulty in using it. If it's useable (Probably OK with OVERLAY software), it will more than likely need to be partitioned.
Are you using Win98 or Win98SE?I'm using Win98SE

How do I ensure that the hard drive detection in my BIOS is set to "Auto"? What is my BIOS?nside:

There should be a message that appears on the monitor when you first start the computer that says something like, "Press F1 to enter setup". Press the key indicated on your keyboard.

Are you sure you both set the jumper and connected the ribbon cable to the MOTHERBOARD correctly?

Solve : compaq presario 2100 freezes at windows?

Answer»

Hi,
We have a Compaq Presario 2100 that is freezing up after the prompt to choose to boot in safe mode etc. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Kompumomwhat happened prior to this? Any other clues? Has anyone been monkeying around inside the case? Are you the only one with acccess to this computer? Is this a laptop?GX1 is right--without more information we will be just guessing what is the cause and cure. My best guess with so little info:

Choose Last Known Good Configuration from the Windows startup menu (it's a few choices below Safe Mode).

DocThe compaq is a laptop, prior to this problem it has been freezing up especially when someone uses the dvd player. As far as access, FOUR other people in addition to myself have access to the computer but none of them or myself opened the case.
Thanks for your help.I tried choosing the last safe configuration, as soon as any choice is made at this screen the computer freezes. When I tried the Safe Mode with C prompt this is what came up
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\hal.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\KDCOM.DLL
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\bootvid.dll
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\config\system
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows\system32\config\system.logA repair reinstall would probably be the easiest and quickest option here.We will try this and see what happens, thanks for the helpWe just tried to reinstall the software and RECIEVED an error message of a file missing hal.dll
I do not think I mentioned that we are running Windows XP
If anyone has any other ideas please let me know.
Thanks
since we can not reinstall, could this be a hardware problem? Is this a real WIndows XP CD or a recovery disc from Compaq?Do you still have the HAL.dll problem? You do? Good!

Lets repair your boot.ini!

1. Insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
2. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
3. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console.
4. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair, typically this will be #1.
5. Type bootcfg /list to show the current entries in the BOOT.INI file. At this point you may get a message telling you that the boot.ini file does not exist. The next step will correct this error.
6. Type bootcfg /rebuild to repair it. This will scan your hard dives for installations of Windows XP, 2000 or NT and display the RESULTS. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your Windows installations to the boot.ini file. Those step will be:

 • Total Identified Windows Installs: 1

(1) C:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
Type y and hit enter
 • Enter Load Identifier

This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message, type the name of your operating system, and then press ENTER.
 • Enter OS Load options

When you receive this message, type /fastdetect, and then press ENTER.
7. Take out the CD ROM and type exit.

Now that we have that out of the way, lets repair/replace Hal.dll

1. As above, insert and boot from your Windows XP CD.
5. At the command prompt type: expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll. (where d: is the drive letter of your CD and c:\windows is the location for your Windows installation folder.) If prompted for permission to overwrite an existing version of the hal.dll file select yes.
6. Once you have expanded the file type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer.

Now very rarely, this will not do the trick. Further action is needed!!

1. Remove your hard drive and install it in another computer with the same OS as a slave or D drive, so that you can copy an undamaged hal.dll file from that system to your hard drive. In this case Hal.dll may or may not be found in: D:\WINDOWS\System32 but regardless if found it will need to be replaced. A working copy of hal.dll will be found in: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386. Copy that version of the file to: D:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\hal.dll as well as the D:\WINDOWS\System32 folder; if it asks to overwrite say YES.
2. Perform a repair installation of Windows.
3. Reformat and perform a complete installation of Windows.

Oh my... Whats that? A functional PC! I'll be damned!

Good Luck,
Robbie

Try to right-click on the file and select Properties. Do you get an error? If so, what does the error say, exactly?

DocTHANK YOU The KillBox on reboot THING worked! But im still confused, why could'nt I have just deleted it normaly?LJS:

In RARE circumstances, Windows 2000 and XP cannot delete files. One EXAMPLE is when the file becomes corrupted and the file name has a space before or after it. I have a file on my PC that i cannot delete, and have not taken the time to follow Microsoft's recommendations, which would take some EFFORT. I might try Pocket Killbox.

8-)With what Microsoft and it's partners have in mind for the future, starting with Vista, I think I shall be porting over to Linux. I shall be strongly encouraging others to do the same.
Search for "Trusted Computing Initiative" if you need clarification of the above.Backdated:

Yeah, i'm thinking it will be a waste of money to upgrade to Vista, but i work in technical support for a small software business, so i should be familiar with Vista. Therefore, i might purchase a Microsoft textbook on Vista with an evaluation CD and install it on a system i'm not using just to get familiar with the OS.

In regard to what you posted, what do Microsoft and its partners have in mind that you don't like?

What "flavor" of Linux would you recommend?

Have you found any way to install and use Microsoft Office and other Windows software with Linux?
Try a Google for "TCPA" "and "NGSCB" but have a look at El Reg first perhaps. Don't believe all the PARTNERSHIP hype about how wonderful all this will be - It's a concerted attempt at complete domination and the suppression of all that the computer "industry" has STOOD for so far with regards to "small time" innovation and development.

I'm only really picking my way through the Linux maze as yet but have taken an early shine to RedHat. In light of all that's out there, that will probably soon change. My main concern if I am to recommend Linux to others is driver support and ease of driver installation. Open Office seems to have the MS Office thing covered, but as I've said, I've only really taken a few small steps.

I hear what you're saying about the need for at least familiarity with the OS, but I'm thinking that before it's usage becomes widespread, I may well have finished in the game and gone on to pastures new.

As an aside, I'd completely forgotten about the pics and info you asked me for. I'll sort something out this evening for you.I will try it. But I don't think get it earlier than first Service Pack. I did not like XP after it's second Service Pack even. Lets see.I have a Xandros system which included Crossover Office. It runs Office 2000 flawlessly, but I have come to prefer OpenOffice. The file compatibility is very good. OprnOffice runs on my other linux boxes and it is free!Quote

=======================================

Thanks for the link, Backdated. I don't plan to purchase it at least till SP1 either, Peccavi, as history shows new OSes from Microsoft ship with too many bugs and it also takes too long for software to catch up with the newest flavor of Windows.

MS Office 2000. Yes it does!
I intend to wait and see. I do that for EVERYTHING now days. I waited a year or so before getting XP, a year or so before I got an IPOD, everything. Vista is no different. I also intend on possibly TRYING an evaluation version of Vista sometime. I probably won't actually own Vista until I build my own computer when I go to college.

Cool. Is Xandros free, and from where can i download it?
You can download the Community Edition for free (torrent only, however). I think there is a 30 day trial of Crossover included. You can buy it for a discounted price if you want it (or PM me and I will send you a copy).

The Deluxe version has Crossover included but it is about $90.

There are SEVERAL flavors. Check out www.xandros.com

None of them have virus/spyware/adware issues. One license covers all personal machines you have. If I only knew anything about it..

I'll probably wait and get it a year or two after it comes out. It all depends. I have to get a new laptop for when I go to college anyway, so maybe it'll come with Vista.Quote

I'd suggest buying a new laptop just after Vista is released. You are bound to find a laptop with Windows XP Professional of Media Center installed on one at a lower price.

Some programs might not work with Vista when it is first released, and you will have to wait till the makers of the programs provide patches to the software to download and install.

Windows XP Professional and Media Center 2005 provide the best of Windows 98 SE / Me and Windows 2000 in one operating system, PLUS a few extras, like the Windows Firewall and additional commands available in the CMD window. I'm not so sure this new operating system will be much of an improvement, and may even be fraught with bugs, as was Windows Me.

Solve : Windows XP Restarting?

Answer» WHENEVER I open a file over a network, my windows xp pro machine restarts as soon as I close that file. It only happens with network files, local files are no problem. As soon as I click the x to close, the screen goes blank and then the boot sequence begins. Any ideas.....ENTER shutdown -a in the Start>Run box to disable auto shutdown on error.
Does the Event Viewer shed any light? The event viewer has nothing. I turned off automatic restart on system failure and it gave me a blue screen instead. The error was "Process has locked pages"...Hmm.. All I can think of off the top of my head is that you are missing a temp directory where it would be able to save the file to. But i'll keep looking... I'm interested to know what is causing this one...

Also.. could you tell us a bit more details.. ie. what TYPE file are you opening.. or does it vary? And what type of network setup do you have? what OS is on the network share? Are you doing anything more than opening and closing the files?

thanksWell, it doesn't seem to matter what type of file it is, have tried it with Access Databases, text files, batch files and even all types of picture files. Have tried opening files on Windows 98, 2000 server and XP. Have even tried opening a local file through the computer name, i.e. typed \\pcname\c\file.txt into explorer on the local computer and it still crashed as soon as I closed it. But the same file opens and closes fine by typing in c:\file.txt.
The network setup is just standard windows xp pro settings, all that I have set is a static ip address. (but problem still occurs with dynamic ip). Have reinstalled the network card and even installed a brand new one with no success.
Doesn't matter if I edit the file or not, it always crashes as soon as I close it.
Hope that clears things up....!!!Yep.. sounds like Explorer is the problem... But you can browse the file structure just fine? As long as you don't actually open a file? Have you tried just using explorer and closing explorer without opening anything?

Here Try This (It's XP SP2 in a downloadable file) this may correct your issues.Quote
The error was "Process has locked pages"...
We need the full error message exactly as it appears. Firewall details etc would also be helpful.

OK, just tried to browse the network with explorer and can open any folder on any share ACROSS alll the different system types and it works fine. No crash when I close explorer. Only causes a problem when a file is opened and closed. I ran several programs(MsAccess, an accounts package etc.) that open access databases accross a network. (Don't think that accounts package relies on explorer to run) But as soon as they close and therefore the files they opened across the network are closed, the system crashes.
We have our own VB program which also opens access databases across our network and the log files for that show the last thing it tried to do before system crash was close the database.
This is one of the strangest little bugs I've ever come across....!!!I've attached a screen shot of the error message. This error happens with or without FIREWALLS....It's a bad driver and the following will help track that driver down (2K, XP and 2K3 only):

Open Regedit and navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management
Make a new DWord Value and name it:
TrackLockedPages
Set it's value to:
1
Reboot.
Now retry and post any error message in full. You should now get something along the lines of DRIVER (Name)_LEFT_LOCKED_PAGES.The driver files is "rdbss.sys"....A supported fix is available from Microsoft, but they say it needs additional testing before general release. If you aren't badly affected, it's recommended that you wait for Win2K SP5 - WinXP SP2 supposedly already contains a fix.
If you need an immediate resolution, you'll need to contact Microsoft Product Support Services.
Two files will need replacing - mrxsmb.sys and rdbss.sys.Have just installed service pack 2 and the problem has not gone away.......I wasn't overly confident that it would as Microsoft don't seem to know too much about this. Have you visited Microsoft Update to see if any of the updates cure it?
I can supply you with the two files from a fully patched system if you'd like to try that. Otherwise, all you can do is contact Microsoft Product Support Services.Could you send me on those files please...one last thing to try before contacting Microsoft....

IS this an address belonging to SOMEONE in your address book? Does it contain any UNUSUAL characters?

I suggest going to that entry in your address book, deleting the email address, and manually adding it again. Does that help?I don't keep an address book, I enter all addresses manually.

There are no unusual characters in the address and I've sent many messages to this person before the problem started....

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but i believe it is a boot sector virus. See if one of your friends has a Windows 2000 CD you can borrow and we will explain how to fix the boot sector using the Repair Console on the CD.

What message do you get when you try to log on with the old password?

Have you tried typing in a new password?

Hi, This is my own pc at home.
Have tried typing my old password which brings up the message cannot log you on.
Have also tried logging on as administrator with administrator as the password and even with no password with no success.
Here's exactly what the message says.
"The system could not log you in. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case. Make sure that the CAPS Lock is not accidentally on".
Topconker:

Sounds like you changed your password and cannot remember what it is, now.

Did you also change (or add) the password to the default administrator account? If not, call the BUSINESS from which you bought the computer and ask for the password.

Do you connect to a network at work with this computer over the Internet?Go here and follow instructions.

When I try to turn on my computer, Windows attempts to boot, but is then interrupted by a blue screen with a stop error that says "STOP: 0x0000007B (0x81868a10, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". Then it says to check for viruses, but I can't because it won't boot up. I've tried USING F8 start up screen, but I tried a few things nothing will work. It keeps going back to the blue screen. Then I tried looking at a Windows help page that didn't help, but it did say that if someone tried to help me these numbers MIGHT be HELPFUL :"0x4, 0, 0, 0". Can anyone help?Do you have access to a CD burner and Nero and a computer that you can temporarily install a few small applications on?

Solve : Downloads, streams, network shares ALL STOP!!?

Answer»

ok I got this comp from a friend who bought a new comp and didnt need the old one. I want to use it as network storage but its having trouble taking in incoming traffic (from INTERNET and from networked computers) When i try to download files (like windows updates) from the internet they stop in the middle, sometimes after a few MB sometimes after a few kb. When I try to OPEN files from the other computers on the network they either dont open or in the case of music they stop playing in the middle of the song. Im able to easily browse the other computers on the network from the TROUBLED computer and browse the troubled computer from the other computers (all the shared stuff) I can also use other computers to open the files on the troubled computer. Also each computer is able to PING all the other computers (with large packets 65500 bytes and large counts)

So basiclly the troubled computer can send things out just fine, but when it comes to incoming stuff all *censored* breaks loose

troubled computer - new hdd with new install of windows 2000 sp4
windows 2000 sp4
netgear fa310-tx network card
intel celeron 1GHz
512 mb pc?
mobo - ?

other comps:
windows xp sp2
windows meForgot one thing

on the troubled computer used a 4.2 GB western digital HDD to install the OS
after all is working RIGHT will add a couple 300GB HDD's

Solve : having a few problems?

Answer»

ive got a 550 mhz pIII and i had antivir and a cheesy security setup(mcafee),so ...i found what look like a good deal and bought and INSTALLED the defender pro 5 in 1. Great software!! stops everything in its tracks as far as spyware, etc... However, I have now lost use of windows media player 10 and tried to reinstall after the warning message that the ini. file is damged. But , I tried deleting the whole media player and I cant, so then I went to SYSTEM restore and now that refuses to WORK as well. I am using windows xp pro as my os,this is the first time ive had any problems using the system restore option. I have since contacted the support team at defender pro but yet have heard a reply, any THOUGHTS? I dont want to reformat the hard drive...i just got all my windows updates done, thanksDon't KNOW if XP has this feature but 2000 does so it's worth a shot...open command prompt, type sfc/scannow, & hit enter.
If it works on XP it will bring up a window showing it is scanning for lost or damaged protected files. It will prompt you to put in the CD for your OS & copy the files from there. Like I said it's worth a shot.

Solve : Send To?

Answer»

How do i add a new location to the send to command so that i can get a new folder on my desktop and placed a new folder in the send to folder on my hard drive ? I want to use send to to send SOMETHING from my docs to another folder on the desktop by right clicking on it and i can t remember how - make is simple - thanksFirst bring up the hidden files & folders, either in control panel/folder options/view/show hidden files, or in the tools button (tool bar). Then open the documents & settings folder (My computer/C:/), find the Send To folder, open it & add a new folder & rename it. This works on 2000, & should be the same for XP.
Another trick you can do is to GO to the My Docs folder, highlight (single-clik) the folder or file you want to move, then click on the edit button in the toolbar, go down to either copy to folder or move to folder from the DROP down list & it will bring up a window for you to pick what folder you want to copy/move to.James2 - sorry just tryed that and it doesn t work , i seem to recall something being dragged and its was tricky to do an y v easy to forget - bye for now . . .Sorry, guess I don't remember too good either, but the second option should have WORKED, does on mine.
As far as drag & drop I believe both folders have to be in the same window?Simply placing a shortcut in the C:\Documents and Settings\Username\SendTo folder should suffice.
Better still, copy the following exactly and paste it into Notepad. Save the file as copymove.reg on your desktop. Double click it and select yes at the warning prompt.

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Copy To]
@="{C2FBB630-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\AllFilesystemObjects\shellex\ContextMenuHandlers\Move To]
@="{C2FBB631-2971-11D1-A18C-00C04FD75D13}"
This will add "Copy To" and "Move To" functions to the right click CONTEXT menu.

Solve : how do i get windows 2000 to come back on??

Answer»

I need help in getting windows 2000 to start running again. I bought a new base unit for my computer and it was already installed with windows 2000. When I switched it on, I put the windows 2000 disk in, which I now know I shouldn't have done, and accidentally REINSTALLED it. My computer shut down and now I can't get back on to it. I have tried starting it up in safe mode and the last known good configuration, but neither of these have worked. When I switch my computer on, it begins to load but restarts just before the main screen COMES up.

If anyone could help me with this I would be very grateful!

Thank you in advance

MichelleHmmm, "base unit". Haven't heard that one before, as far as computer components go. In computer terms, exactly what do you MEAN?i don't know what else to call it- it was called a base unit when i ordered it. Its the tower where the power SUPPLY comes from, where all the drives are.In other words, the computer? lol

Solve : XP or 2000 Prof.??

Which OS is best?
I would like honest, unbiased comparisons from those with experience!

Would I be right saying that 2000 professional offers most of what XP has but takes up less ROOM, memory and doesn't have some of the USELESS bells and WHISTLES?

If not please correct me!
Pretty much, yeah, how much ram and processor speed do you have?
XP is easier to tweak and play around with reg settings though. You have summed it up very well. All of the good stuff, none of the fluff.Would you recommend it for a p4, 1gb ram machine that feels as if it isnt running as fast as it could? Is it dual core dual channel?

Have you disabled the paging executive?

Do you use diskeeper 10 Pro? If not it's worth WATCHING their flash demo especially about the bit about the Master File Tables and the use of Frag-Shield.Quote

You mean XP, right? Are you serious? If that machine won't run XP well after a fresh OS installation, then there's something wrong the machine. Last summer, I installed a new hard drive for my nephew, a college student. He gave me the Win XP and Office 2003 CD's he bought - no, stole - at academic pricing from the college bookstore. The computer had a 600MHz Duron processor with 384MB PC133 memory. It ran fine with Win XP.work this one out i've got 2 machines the one downstairs (which the kids use) has a celeron 1700 mhz processor, 256 ddr memory and a 80g hard drive, the machine upstairs has a pentium 3 450 mhz processor, 320mb sdram and a 40g hard drive. both machines have windows xp HOME on them. the machine upstairs runs like the wind the one downstairs runs like a snail. know what would you put this down to the celeron processor or kids on the internet or both.Or all of the above plus less RAM.

Solve : keyboard/mouse problems?

Answer»

ok...heres the situation. i got a compaq presario ez2207 with win98 given to me without a keyboard and mouse. i thought my old keyboard and mouse might work. WRONG!!! my keyboard and mouse have ps/2 jacks on them, and for some stupid reason the dumb ppl at compaq decided not to put ps/2 jacks on their computer, instead they only have usb ports. so i go buy a usb keyboard and mouse only to find out i need to install drivers for them....how the f*** do u install drivers for a mouse and keyboard when u need them to click "install" on the hardware wizard screen??? and the stupid thing is, they both work when i run win98 in safe mode *censored*

...sorry for the language i have tried for too long to GET it to work. and any help would greatly be appreciated.Have you tried to reboot into normal and see if win 98 sees the new hardware ?

dl65 it sees the hardware then it asks to install the driver for it... i need to click "next" in order to do it...but i cant. they both work in safe mode but they dont in normal mode...theres no power to either of them in normal mode (optical mouse doesnt glow and keyboard LEDs dont glow). also the LCD display on the front of the computer acknologes the keyboard and mouse. so everything works EXCEPT when i run windows in normal mode.

It is indeed a stupid situation!
Is the keyboard available in DOS mode? If it's not, then you're probably stumped as legacy mode USB drivers have been disabled in the BIOS setup.
More on this machine here.have u tried installing driver from safe mode.one other thing u could do if your computer will support it upgrade to windows 2000 and above.2000 and above should have a driveri have a driver for the keyboard, but the mouse doenst come with one. besides i dont think the cd-rom drive works in safe mode. either that or theres something wrong with the cd-rom drive. i cant tell, i cant navigate in normal mode ive only been able to navigate in safe mode. i guess the best option is to install windows XP.Quote

i guess the best option is to install windows xp.

Only if the machine has enough horsepower (RAM) to make it enjoyable and you have $100+ to shell out for XP. Are we sure it is not a hardware problem? If it is no version of Windows will fix that!
If the keyboard works OK in DOS mode, then all you need is a mouse driver.
There's a bootdisk here that loads real mode mouse and CD drivers. Boot from this with a CD in the drive unit and dir the CD. This will prove keyboard, mouse and CD functionality in one fell swoop.
The first CD unit will be loaded at V: so a few simple tests would be to TYPE:
edit - The DOS editor will open and you should be able to move the mouse cursor.
dir v: - This should list the contents of the first CD unit.

There is no machine specific Windows mouse driver for this box.I'm a new user here.

Solve : Downgrading to Windows 2000 on a Netbook?

Answer»

I have Windows XP on this netbook I purchased a few years ago. Do you think I could get a performance boost if I downgraded from XP to 2000? I wouldn't bother with going through the trouble normally, but it's the only computing device I have to use currently. What problems would I run into in the process of doing this?Good morning corlenbelspar

Well in my opinion I would not do this for a couple of reasons. But like I said this is my opinion

Windows 2000 "As support for Windows 2000 ends on 13 July, 2010" so the only updates you will get will be before 7/2010.
W2K was fairly fast but could be temperamental with drivers. I don't know where you will find drivers for a NETBOOK which ever netbook you have. I would stay with XP. There is a really good possibility it will run worse with W2K than XP.

Windows XP "Even though we ended the sale of Windows XP on October 22, 2010, we still plan to provide support for individual users and businesses until April 2014" just for the updates alone I would not downgrade to W2K

Both OS's were built on the same NT kernel but XP drivers do not always work on W2K.

You cant not install newer versions of IE on W2K, most software will be written for XP and not W2K. A lot of companies do not offer support for any OS before XP.

Don't get me wrong when W2K was out and running it was fairly stable, quick, clean looking etc. Well hope this helps you on your decision, Mike Quote from: corlenbelspar on AUGUST 11, 2012, 11:49:14 PM

What have you done so far to try to speed up the XP installation? Some things to try:

-reduce graphical effects (transluscent selection rectangle, fading menus, use the Classic theme, etc
-reduce running services. Many of the services that run by default are not necessary. Typically they won't impact performance but it can be worth trying to disable those you don't need. Disabling Luna themes can be particularly helpful since they can be relatively taxing on older Graphics cards or on older integrated chips (or, as some netbooks use, host-based processing).I SUPPOSE you're right hartbeatmr. I thought these things you mentioned would maybe be a PROBLEM but wanted to make sure there was anything else I didn't think of.

BC_Programmer, I disabled a bunch of processes that were unneeded as well as changing to the classic theme and reducing effects; I don't have much experience dealing with Windows services to know what is needed and what isn't, but I guess Google will be a good tool to use in that regard.

Thank you both for your replies. Visit BlackViper's site for a comprehensive list of services and what they do...Will that netbook accommodate more RAM? If so, adding more is what I'd do. A visit to www.crucial.com is a way to find out whether your computer can support more RAM.Quote from: corlenbelspar on August 11, 2012, 11:49:14 PM

Yes, you get a performance boost of about 20%

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0v_6yLKFws

This is my video that shows my netbook working with Windows 2000. The only thing PROBLEMATIC is the hyper-threading, and only "Advanced Computer and Power Interface" can work on my Intel Atom N450, with all the subsequent problems of warming the netbook if you don't apply a patch provided long time ago by Microsoft.
If you have a processor without Hyper-threading, Windows 2000 can install and run flawlessly if you set IDE mode in the Bios and you start the installation of Windows 2K from XP copying the files of Windows 2000 and substituting the 2K's Winnt32.exe with XP's Winnt32.exe.

P.S. There are some unofficial updates that help to keep your Windows 2000 updated and, with them, you can run some programs designed for XP.I think It was wondering if I could downgrade to XP and how easy is it to do this? Also, do I need to buy a copy of XP, or can I just downgrade for free, seeing as I have alreayd bought the license for 7.Quote from: Jazz555 on January 12, 2013, 12:10:33 AM
do I need to buy a copy of XP, or can I just downgrade for free, seeing as I have alreayd bought the license for 7.

You need a copy of XP on genuine Windows media and a product key not in use on any other machine. Also there may be issues around product levels (Starter, Home, PROFESSIONAL, etc). Finally you may find that if you have very recent hardware, the maker has not written or released XP drivers. There will be issues if you need SATA drivers for example.

Solve : Win2K Pro Service Pack 4 install fails, stimon.exe error?

Answer»

I am currently updating a Compaq Armada M300 (s/n 1J17JKB5E00W) as far as it can be, given system limitations. It has Windows 2000 Pro with SP2 on it now. I tried installing SP4, but it fails with this error..."The FILE c:\winnt\system32\stimon.exe is open or in use by another program." I looked in Task Manager, Running TASKS, Services, and MSConfig for stimon.exe or stisvc. It was not listed in any of those places, EITHER as running or not running. I am confused. What program could be using stimon.exe if it's not listed at all?Normally happens with a copied ver. of Win2K...

There is an alleged fix as i've seen it before but i'm not at liberty to say...AFAIK, the version of Win2K Pro on the M300 is genuine. IDK how to tell if it's copied/cracked/pirated or not. The only way I know past this error is to wipe and install a known-legitimate version. Or install XP as this system meets minimum requirements (THOUGH it'll never be fast) or an easy-to-use/migrate from Win2K/XP version of Linux. Any suggestions? This system has a P3-600MHz cpu and 320mb RAM.you could try using Process Explorer (might require an older version to run on W2K) and then use the "Files" view to see which program has it open.

Another alternative, if you are comfortable using the command line is using the "Handle" sysinternals tool, which can FIND out precisely what has that file open. (with the tool installed, 'handle stimon.exe' should find what you need).

Please HELP me, I am getting hard TIME to resolve this problem.

Thanks All,
You may be out of luck...the English language Pack needs to be purchased from MS for other language editions i believe.Versions of Windows Prior to 7 were localized installations. There are two ways in which Windows 2000 can support multiple languages - localized versions of the operating system and Regional Settings (also called Locales) within a localized version. To install a Locale you need the CD, unless it has been installed already.
As he stated he has no CD he's outta luck as i said.

Not all apps that work on XP and later will run on Windows 2000. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes not.

Check version of VideoLAN. Windows 2000 support is removed in VLC 1.2.0 and newer.

Old versions of VLC for Windows 2000:

Why is it so difficult to install old versions of anything?
VLC 1.0.5 works
Hello. I had a Compaq Evo N620c with Windows 2000, and Flash worked perfectly. But I got the same problem with my Armada 1700 a time back. Mozilla Firefox and Flash worked back then. This is about three-four months ago.Yeah, Adobe flash is now at 11 and many web sites just do not work with earlier versions. I don't know of nay ix.Thanks, I have given up.

Many websites now require Flash 11.
As far as I know, Adobe has no intention to make Flash compatible with Windows 2000.
Thanks to numerous past discussions, methods have been found for installing Flash Player 11 on Windows 2000. See this thread in Adobe User Forums, which explains how to use the free HxD Hex Editor to make one simple change that will allow installation of Flash Player 11 on Windows 2000:

http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1012569

It's preferable to install recent Flash Player 11 using the hack rather than an old version which has security vulnerabilites and may be deprecated by some video sites.

I CONCUR with another poster that VLC 1.0.5 works well on Windows 2000. Have also had good success with SMPlayer which might have some newer codecs.

Will mark this a s solved.

Solve : DacCom.dll Problem?

Answer»

I am running WIN200 on this computer, and have no desire to change. I have a scheduled task which runs every morning, and have preciously had no problem with it. Suddenly, it doesn't run. I checked the Task Scheduler, and the message said it was turned off. I attempted to turn it on, but was not successful ULTIMATELY Component Services told me that a file named "DacCom.DLL" was improperly installed, and had to be re-installed so that the Task Scheduler would run.

The file didn't exist on my computer, nor does it seem to exist on my WIN2000 installation disk..

I Googled the problem, and it seems to be fairly common. One of the solutions offered allowed me to download the file DacCom.dll. I did so, but it didn't help. I got the same ERROR message.

The program I want to run operates quite well when called up, but nothing will run from the Task Scheduler.

I have tried to re-register the file, but that doesn't work. I get a message that tells me the module couldn't be found.

Anyone have any ideas how to restore my Task Scheduler?Tom Brady, I see you got told on another forum that there is a Windows file called dacom.dll. My spelling is correct. "DacCom.dll".
Perhaps I didn't explain the situation properly: when I attempt to initialize "Component Services" (which controls the Task MANAGER, among other things) I get 2 error messages. The first says "Unable to initialize APPLICATION because (DacCom) is not installed properly. Please re-install this product.". The second error message is headed "Microsoft Management Console" and says " The selected snap-in did not initialize properly."

Solve : My laptop starts very but displays a light blue screen with mouse curse only.?

Answer»

I ve a min laptop toshiba (portege 3490CT), pentium 3 with in built hard disk. No anti virus software was instaled. The problem is that it starts very. At first it STOPED opening all programes giving error message that "some setup file missing" if opened a file on the desktop/EVEN a program from the startmenu. Now it has stoped DISPLAYS the desktop, insteady it displays a blue screen with curser alone & even safemode is nolonger displaying desktop yet at first it was working well in safemode only. What should i do.

Another THING is, It has no cd rom and failed to recorgonise external drive. In its bootsquence options, there is FDD option. Does this means that i can use a flash stick to reprogram ma laptop? Wat volume of aflash do i ned to make bootable one? You have way more problems with this old computer than are worth the time trying to figure out. Is it possible to purchase a new on? If so then do so.

Alan <><
regarding the FDD appears to be not recognizable I think this is an issue with a Toshiba make HD! The had the same problem when I tried ACCESSING a Toshiba external Hard drive but no chance it will appear on My Computer the PC just hangs.

Solve : All data gone, looking for ideas?

Answer»

I'm a FAIRLY advanced user but here is something I've never seen before.

I had an old system running Windows 2000 Pro. A year ago or so I tried to boot it up and it wouldn't start (stuck at the boot screen with AHDCPI something maybe and a single dash on a line by itself below that -- this is before any of the windows boot stuff starts). I thought OK, maybe a DISK has gone bad, someday I'll deal with that... I didn't need it fixed then, so I just turned it off and left it alone.

OK, now a year later, the day has come to deal with it.

It still wouldn't boot of course, so I disconnected the three drives in the machine, got an empty disk (13.5G IBM) and installed Win 2000 on it in the machine. I put on SP4, then did the update/reboot loop dance until the system was fully updated.

So the system is running great with this one new (old) disk with the fresh OS install.

Here's where it gets interesting.

So then I shut down and try, one at a time, installing the three drives that had previously been in the machine. Because I want to access their data and copy it off to another system.

Well... after getting past one problem where the bios was booting off HDD-1 instead of HDD-0, I got the system to boot up (booting off the newly installed drive) with the first of the three drives attached. I have the case cracked open and am just plugging drives into the cables (powering off before doing this of course). I have checked the jumpers and the master/slave jumper settings are correct; things also look good in the BIOS with the full drive size and model showing up correctly.

But. There's always a but, right?

When the OS came up, the old drive just was not there. I went into disk manager and I can see it and it shows up as just empty space, unpartitioned.

I thought OK, so I had an empty drive on the system; I must have forgotten about that.

Tried the second disk. It shows up (as drive E:, since the optical drive is drive D:)

But... there's a but here, too. Double clicking on the disk, an error message comes up saying the disk is not formated... would I LIKE to format it now? Well no, thank you.

OK, that's two.

Tried the third disk. It doesn't show up at all, and looking at disk manager, it is also unpartitioned.

All these disks are IDE drives. This system has a Shuttle AK-12 motherboard.

There is NO WAY that all three of these disks were empty previously. This was a fully functioning system with a ton of valuable data on it. Maybe I'm just in denial about the data being gone, but really I do not believe that all three disks would go bad at the same time (where "time" is defined in a special way as how many times the computer has been used recently... I do realize that a lot of time has passed while the computer was sitting off and idle).

What is going on?

I can understand disks going bad, but three disks?

Disk manager shows all three as being fine (I saw "functioning normally" or something somewhere... forget where).. I think it was disk manager but maybe not. At least it does detect the disks and it reports their sizes correctly.

Looking for ideas here.

Hopefully ideas other than "the data's gone" because the drives do seem good. Also fwiw they sound fine, and always have.

Assuming the data still is retrievable, what could account for this behavior?

What other information could I provide that would help?

My favorite theory right now is that I need a motherboard update. But that doesn't seem right. And of course the company that made the motherboard, Shuttle, does not have the driver for this model on their web site! Never buy Shuttle; they abandon their old products.

Also there's the theory that I had RAID on this system, but I don't think so. The drive sizes are mismatched: 60G (Maxtor), 80G (Seagate), 120G (Seagate).

Or the theory that the system is doing this to the drives... doesn't make sense either, because it's not doing ANYTHING to the (even older drive) with the newly installed OS.

And I have a theory that maybe there's some IRQ setting that's messed up. This is something I used to be familiar with in Windows, but my knowledge has faded with time as I haven't dealt with it in a while... if that rings a bell for anyone and you have suggestions, please share.

I can't figure this out. Anyone have ideas on what might be wrong? I strongly suspect all the data is still there.

OK, it turns out I am an idiot.

Can anyone think of what happened before you read the answer below?

OK well you don't have all the information I have, so the question is unfair. I just didn't realize the extra information was relevant.

Extra information: there is an identically-looking other computer right behind the computer I was working on.

Huh. So. It turns out somehow the two computers got swapped, and all this time I was working on a computer that's set up with UNIX. So now you see how three partitions simultaneously "failing" could make sense, since they didn't fail at all, they just aren't recognized by Windows.

The other computer, hiding in the back, was the actual Windows 2000 Pro machine with the disks I needed.

Still have some disk issues with that one (one of the disks is flaking out, maybe) but the big mystery is solved.

Great story...glad you figured it out...

Yeah, a 41-year old who has no money, makes REFERENCES to their parents and Roblox, and somehow manages to have hands about the size of a 12-year old, is completely more believable than the fact that you are really in fact just 12 and taking apart some old junk that you found in the attic.

As to the problem, as others have said, you need an adapter. UNFORTUNATELY, as you seem to be coming to grips with, consumer goods typically require money. This, for you, is an unfortunate truth as you claim to have none. Of course with no money I fail to see how a 41 year old could have such a nice lamp, and electricity, and a place to live, as all three of those cost money, the latter two in fact costing a recurring amount, which makes me wonder, if you don't have a job, you really ought to think about getting one. And heaven help those around you if you manage to land one in IT.Quote from: kbartlin18 on December 24, 2011, 03:15:35 PM

Solve : Windows Mobile Calendar Events - Reminders Don't Occur?

Answer»

I have a Palm Treo 700w for Verizon, for which you can see the specs on the wikipedia page I have linked below. I know that it's not exactly qualified for this BOARD, but I placed it where I best could - aside from Off Topic.

Sometimes, my phone stops displaying calendar reminders, and maybe even tasks and alarms too - I don't use those as much. I use it for a lot, especially waking up in the mornings in time for school. Normally, this problem can be resolved by deriving the device of power for a number of seconds, but it doesn't SEEM to be working now. Any help that can be offered will be APPRECIATED, and if this topic is moved, please private message me. I have tried Google, Yahoo Answers, and Verizon Support, but apparently my technology is so outdated that nobody knows what I need to do. Many thanks in advance for any help!

And, I'm wondering why you posted in the Windows 2000 section. Other would have been fine, I think.

Regarding your actual question, SORRY, I have no idea. I'm not familiar with it. I am on Thanksgiving break from school, and so am not required to return until November 28. However, this is an issue that needs to be resolved ASAP. Thank you, everyone.

Solve : KERNEL32.dll Missing????

Answer»

1st of all I will admit that I have little to no KNOWLEDGE of the "inner workings" of a computer!

I have an old, old laptop (Dell Latitude C610) that was given to me. I read on the internet that the laptop was capable of being "wireless"...Thus problems began...

I ordered a wireless card from a vendor on "Amazon.com". Description - "Intel PRO/Wireless 2200 - Network adapter - Mini PCI - 802.11b, 802.11g.

Tried to install and think I learned I needed drivers for the software. Called Dell and Intel for help but neither "supported the software". Contacted the vendor from Amazon.com and they sent me numerous files to try to get the laptop wireless.

AND - that is when the problems REALLY started!!!

Now I am getting this error on the laptop (and by the way - still no wireless network!!!)

"The procedure entry point WTSGetActiveConsoleId could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"!!

Is there any help for this???

All replys are appreciated!!!WELCOME to the forum.

1st of all I will admit that I have little to no knowledge of the "inner workings" of a computer!

Here is the best advice I can give you. This is the same as I would say to my close friends. Attempting to improve or maintain an older computer with Windows 2000 is not a good use of your time. I have a Windows 2000 laptop here that works fine, but I no longer have any interest in doing any improvements on it. If it started to have problems, I would just set it aside.
You can get a good quality refurbished dell laptop for about $200 or less and it with have Windows XP. The old computer you might sell and recover part of the cost.

If you want to get a refurbished Dell laptop with Windows XP, do a Google search on:
Refurbished Dell Laptop

The best choice of wireless adapter is often a USB device. These are in high demand and work on many computers, so the cost goes down and the quality is good. But any specialized wireless devices for older models TEND to be overpriced because of low turnover.

That is the best advice I can offer for anybody with limited experience. I have had better results buying a NEWER refurbished computer rather that doing maintenance on my older clunkers. And I have years of experience st this thing.

Otherwise, you have to remove the drivers you installed. They may not be suitable for Windows 2000. which had a major update two or three years ago. It is no longer supported.
Sorry for posting in the old topic but i had similar problems...

When it comes to kernel32.dll i suggest you to just reinstall the windows, put xp up and remove all the necessary things that would slow down your computer.

Or there is another solution THO i dont suggest it is to go to dll files website and download kernel32.dll or read about it and see if your problem is solvable

P.S. this is my 1st post. I hope it was helpful
Cheers
I plead ignorance. Checking with the MS knowledge Base, there are updates after nSP4 for Windows 2000. One of these is a security update for kernel32.dll which may have something to do with the problem the OP reported.

Solve : Problems with boot from CD ROM?

Answer»

I have a big problem: I can not boot from CD ROM (and I need to repair my OS). I have Windows 2000 Datacenter. When I boot, I receive following message:
INT13/42h
Read error (AX=0100,DL=44)
Block=00000010
Error loading image:DISKEM1X.BIN

Can anybody help me? Or, how I can to repair OS without boot from CD ROM.
Thanks a lot.

MikyHi,

First You have to check Your BIOS and the arrangment of the boot DEVICES.

most BIOS they arranged the boot devices as:

Floppy DISK
CD-ROOM
HARDDRIVE

So, try to fix it like above, by restarting your computer and hit the F8, or Delete, or F2 because

It is depend from BIOs to other any way most of them is F8.

then go to Boot and arrabge it.

Or maybe your CD that you are trying to boot from it does not Bootable CD

this is another problem also ..

seond solution.

Bring a startup disk with a Win CD to Enther to the DOS and repair Your Windows by typing :

[CD partition F G E ... ] sys C: (Enter)

finish

regards

Cici .
Try entering the BIOS setup and changing the boot order to boot from the CD-ROM drive first.

i am trying to change the boot sequence by
having.
1- cd
2- hdd
3- floppy.
i am using the page dn to change the field as well as + and _ KEY

Solve : tried to clean out computer?

Answer»

I wanted to defrag the computer but only had 11% memory and needed 15%.
After deleting files I now had 0% memory. I now have 2%.
it looks like instead of deleting they WENT to my C drive that I was trying to clean out.
I tried a restore and that did not help.
I am on Windows 2000 Professional.
Can ANYONE help w/this.

thxFirst let's clarify the terminology. "Memory" refers to ram and swapfile. You are TALKING about hard disc space.

When you deleted the files they went to the recycle bin. Empty the Recycle Bin. Run Disc Cleanup. When you do, CLICK on the "more options" tab and choose to clean up restore points. This will delete all but the most recent restore point - that should FREE up a LOT of space. Let us know.

Solve : inaccessible boot device /stop error screen?

Answer»

Heres the problem- I can't boot up, even in safe mode. I don't have windows 2000 installation disk and I don't have boot up disk. I downloaded ultimate boot CD and can get it running but don't know what to do.
Is there anything I can do? Anywhere I can downolad a instalation disk or a boot up disk?
If I wanted to wipe the hard drive and start again, is that even possible without either of the above disks?
If I were in your situation, I'd look towards a more modern OS unless you have applications that have to run on 2000. If your looking for a free solution Linux has many good operating systems that are dirt simple to install. Only concern would be what you have for hardware and do you need to PLAY games that would be tricky to make run under Linux?. If you have a Pentium III or newer CPU and 512MB of Ram or more, you can go the route of many modern Linux distros like Ubuntu Desktop.

If you want to stick with Windows OS and you have your Key on your system, and you have a friend with a Windows 2000 Professional CD, you can try performing a repair installation with their disk or a clean installation if you want to start from scratch clean, using your key to register the software.

If you dont have access to a Windows 2000 Professional CD then, I would look to ebay for a non-pirated version of 2000 or XP or BUY a new COPY of XP Home for about $89 -$109 at a retail outlet. If your system is a Pentium III or better CPU and at least 256MB Ram, I'd rather buy a copy of XP Home or XP Pro instead of Windows 2000 which has limited functionality these days with many pieces of software no longer supporting 2000 with the minimum OS now being XP. I am guessing your hardware is OLD given you are running Win 2000, otherwise I would suggest Windows 7 Home Premium, but for Win 7 Home Premium, you should really have a Dual-Core CPU and at least 1GB Ram, although 2GB is way better. Or a modern faster single-core CPU like the AMD Sempron 2.7 Ghz and 2GB Ram.

Solve : 2K Installation Issue?

Answer»

Recent my fathers drive in his audio pc died. He ordered a replacement after getting what he could off the old old. We attempt to install 2K, only for it to start haveing issues with the install. Dell Dimension 4100, there are no light error codes.Just curious as to if you replaced the drive with same type such as IDE with IDE or if you upgraded this older system to now take a SATA drive to where you might need a SATA controller driver for Windows 2000 Pro?

If you kept the same IDE drive type, is the jumper installed correctly for MASTER (MA), SLAVE (SL), or CABLE SELECT (CS) ? Look at the old drive and compare jumper location to make sure it matches the new drive.

I am guessing you are able to boot off the Windows 2000 Pro CD and then it comes to a point to where it says hard drive not detected? No, we got an IDE to go in the unit. After it installs the files during the LOAD bar part of it, is when it starts to have trouble. We tried a differnt cd drive, useing the harddrive in another machine an still have this OCCURING.

Solve : problem with mouse pointer on my laptop?

Answer»

I have an old Dell running Windows 2000. The USB port isn't working so i have to use the built-in mouse point usually. However when I went to use the computer a few days ago I discovered a weird PROBLEM. The mouse pointer will only allow left-clicking so it is very hard for me to do anything on that computer at all. The computer has a touch pad with buttons and also a little rubber thing in between the keys on the keyboard and another set of mouse buttons to go with it. I'm not sure what happened but neither will respond CORRECTLY and I ca only get left-clicking. I plugged a borrowed USB mouse into the PS port (with an adapter) and it worked fine, if this gives any clue as to what happened

~thanks

Try uninstalling USB root hubs and reboot. Go to your device manager and expand USB CONTROLLERS. There are usually 4 USB hubs and right-click select uninstall, reboot. how do I do that?I'm still unable to use that LAPTOP because the mouse pointer issue...

I have windows 2000. The computer said it was preparing to boot device list but never did or it said to hit f12 to temporary boot list, but it did not work. it said to hit f1 but that did not work. The only way to get out was to shut the machine down. Is there a way to unlock this machine?

Thank You. It worked. Now my friend has the same problem with some of her older video games. Can you help with that too please?

Sure, can you get some more information from them, such as computer specs (OS, memory, etc) the game in question, has it always been that way or did it START at some point, etc

A Generic suggestion for games would be to disable any unnecessary peripherals, such as TV tuner cards or Card readers, for some reason that can cause problems with some games when they go looking for controllers. My friend has the exact same computer as me: E-Machines ET1331G-07w, but with Windows XP Pro SP3 x32. She has the Millienium Game Pak for Windows 98. While most games play, we noticed yesterday that the game Bloobs had a runtime error. I changed it's compatability MODE every way possible, but this does not help. Her computer does not have a TV Tuner Card or external game controllers. I just have no idea how to fix this. Please help if you can, and thank you.

Solve : The directory or file C: is corrupt or unreadable Please run chdsk utility?

When chkdsk /r completes it always reports have found and repaired ONE or more errors. If you didn't see that message I suggest you MAY not have run chkdsk /r

chkdsk does not always state that it "found and repaired one or more errors" one particular case in which it might neglect to do so is if there were no errors to report, at which point it simply states that "chkdsk has checked the drive and found no errors" or a message to that effect.I do not insist. If you're certain you did follow that PROCEDURE that's fine. I just want to make sure it's been DONE. Thank you. There were errors, for sure, I saw them, but it was hard to read since the computer reboots. What other software can I use? Whoa - time warp. You're responding to a post in your thread from a year ago?Sure I am; let me say this, I still haven't replaced the drive.
Interestingly, Seatools for DOS claims, the drive is fine, I did a long and short SMART test.

The drive doesn't want to quit but those error messages don't quit either.

So theres only one thing I can try, and thats reformatting and starting fresh, perhaps it'll work otherwise I'll have to give in and finally replace it.

Solve : Windows 2000 won't boot?

Answer»

Hey guys...

So here's what's happening...
I exchanged my old PC and kept the old hard drive, and the old PC used a Hard Drive controller of type PIIX3, and the new one uses PIIX4, I tried this but Windows 2K still keeps freaking crashing with the error code "Inaccessible boot device"... Can anybody help me?

Please? I don't what else to do I'm really stuck and I want my old PC to work still... I want it to boot that's all I care about... I've set up all the RAM and stuff like it was previously but this didn't help... What should I do??? Come on anybody?

Edit: Plus I've just checked the Drive with CHKDSK /F and it comes up with no signs of any problems... And this is a perfect-condition drive so there should really be no issue with it, from what I can see...

This PC is custom PC my friend gave me, like I said, The motherboard is an HP one, Supposing it should be compatible with Windows-9x and NT OSes... I don't know, I'm really confused.

Oh yes, I also remembered this Machine had a Windows 98 HDD in it, sorry, didn't see that when I first opened it up,( I remind you I just said I 'Exchanged' my old PC, I said nothing about buying a new computer. ) ..So I ran Command-Only when booting 98, Ok, so get this. The Win 98 Drive is Marked as 'C:\' , Windows 2k is marked as drive 'D:\'. Here's what happens.
I'm guessing either both drives are going/gone bad or there's something seriously wrong with either the MBR or something else.

Here's what I do. I typed in: D:\ Into The MS-Dos prompt and it tells me...
Wait, what? Ok, I just finished a 'Scandisk' now and now when I type D:\ it tells me invalid drive specification... What?
Though I try to Dir C:\, it says:
General Writing failure writing drive C
Abort, Retry, Fail?
What is going on here??

So,
Here's a photo I took of it, for experts who can try to solve the error code...

Quick question, why would your Windows 2000 machine give Blue screens from Windows XP?Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 22, 2010, 11:19:38 AM

Quick question, why would your Windows 2000 machine give Blue screens from Windows XP?
To be honest I'm really not sure...
I was really thinking this is supposedly a default NT BSOD, as you can see it looks AFAIK quite different from Windows Xp and + BSOD's...

Why? Is a standard Windows 2k professional/NT bsod different than this??

Also, could you possible specify what's needed to properly run Win2k? I feel like I'm stuck here... I technically could change the hard drive controller, but I mean, what type does Windows 2k need to boot? Or any NT OS for that matter... Like, the minimum specifications...?As an addition, I've also tried INSERTING my Windows 98 Disk into the CD-ROM upon boot, changing the CMOS battery, switching drives... etc...
But still no luck.

It seems I'm having a bad day...oh wait, that is the standard 2k BSOD. nevermind.Let's clarify....

I exchanged my old PC and kept the old hard drive
And what did you do with the old hard drive? Did you just put it into new hardware environment? The reason you get this error either specific driver used for hard drive access does not like the new motherboard...the fix is normally to select a generic IDE driver before moving the hard drive, or 2000 cannot find itself as the drive is now seen as D: ...having it as the only drive would normally fix this.

Hey, sorry for long wait... I know this reply / thread is a bit old but please let me add this...

The Win98 drive had the bootloader on it, or atleast some of it. And upon attempting to boot 2000 by itself, I get the dreaded NT-error:

NT18 BOOT FAILURE

or something along those lines... any help?
Oh, also, sorry FORGOT to add... I attempted to copy the bootloader over to the Win 2000 drive in addition to try to get it to work... didn't help any. (I did this from DOS)
But now I'm only bottlenecked to a certain point, and since I still can't boot the Operating System due to the drive being inaccessible, thus, carpy 98 hogging the booting with it's own bootloader (last TIME I checked, 98 has the boot loader... I think)

Just to let you all know I only got Windows 2k to boot by copying over the bootloader from 98 drive... Oh I already said that...

Ugh, Dual-Booting back in the days is not what it is today. Quote from: deargodpleasehelp on December 11, 2010, 09:28:34 AM

or something?

Ugh, Dual-Booting back in the days is not what it is today.

For the record, I never had any problems dual-booting my Thinkpad laptop (circa 1994) between PC-DOS 7 and OS/2 for a while. At least until I realized that OS/2 was gobbling up a lot of space and I hardly ever booted into it, at which point I deleted it

Lastly, regardless of what operating systems you're dealing with, when you go to create a dual-boot system, you should always have the disks for both.

Indeed I do, I have the Windows 2000 RTM disk, and the 98 Bootable cd...

But, I do not have the patience (or feeling) to reinstall 98 or 2000, both have important files that keep them running (The IDE driver and Floppy + Sata drivers)... So I don't feel like reinstalling these Oses... Took me forever just to try to configure the old PC right just to run 2k without Driver issues...

Then I finally replaced the PC and took the drive with it... and this is what I get?

Also, not NTLDR is missing message...
EDIT: Actually, upon force-booting 98 I do get: NTLDR is missing message...
But not on Windows 2000... I'm not sure why it displays something different.

I mean I tried searching ALL over the web, but I didn't find anything!! ;(

I'm not sure why, it just says something like: NT18 BOOT FAILURE
or NT** something ending with "... BOOT FAILURE"

It doesn't give me the Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. thing...
I've really never seen this before, I suppose this has something to do with the bootloader??

I actually have really no idea about this error or whatever... Never seen this on any of my other PCs, must be a Windows 2000 thing? Doesn't happen on XP...

And if I try to boot back into '98 it shows me the loading screen, then I get a bSOD. (BLACK screen of death; DOS Style).

Solve : Deleting files equal to 1KB in a batch file?

Answer»

How to create a script to delete files (ej.: *.xml or *.html) equal to 1KB in batch file?Did you mean files whose size is exactly 1024 bytes? Not more? Not less?

I refer to files that are 1KB, may be more or less bytes. I do not know much about the subject of bytes.
thanks for you reply...1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte = 1 KB.

I ask again. Do you want to only delete files that are 1 KB in size? (Did you mean size?)
only the files of size 1KBCode: [Select]@echo off
REM example
set mask=*.xml
for /f "delims=" %%A in ('dir /b %mask%') do if %%~zA equ 1024 del "%%~dpnxA"
D:\Temp>dir

Files 2.xml, 4.xml, 6.xml, 8.xml are files of 1KB to windows.

In the DETAILS view, Windows EXPLORER rounds file SIZES, roughly to the nearest 1 KB. Files under 1024 bytes are shown as "1 KB". The file 2.xml is in fact 115 bytes in size as you can see. so are 4, 6 and 8.xml.

Yes, the batch file name is del.batQuote from: mdibarra on December 07, 2010, 01:40:20 PM
Yes, the batch file name is del.bat

And the .xml files are in the same folder? Are they hidden, system or read-only? What HAPPENS if you run this batch in that folder?
