Solve : HELP! TROUBLE W/BURNING MUSIC CD'S....? |
|
Answer» I recently upgraded my OS from WindowsME to Windows XP. I have tried to burn some music cd's with Nero & Easy CD Creator on my cdrw but it just doesn't work [smiley=cry.gif].... Upgrading a current OS to another is risky. Upgrading WinME to WinXP is asking for problems! Actually, I didn't format, just installed XP. Nero was already installed on the WindowsME before I installed XP.Quote I agree Anayway, have you tried updating your drivers for the burner? Windows Updates? Yes, I have tried updating the drivers or are there other drivers I can download for a CD Writer IDE 1610 (STANDARD) :-?Sorry for any confusion! By current OS, I meant the already installed OS. It's not a good IDEA to upgrade as many remnants and any problems of the former OS are left behind and these have a nasty habit of coming back in the future and biting you! Anyone who sets up systems on a regular basis will tell you that a fresh installation is the wisest course to choose. As a slight aside, an upgrade CD can be used to perform a full installation from scratch without an OS being present; the XP installation routine will merely ask you to insert a previous OS installation CD (Win98, ME etc) to check for previous ownership. As for CD drivers, these cannot really be upgraded. CD and DvD burners are only burners if the correct software is installed to utilise them. Look for any useable updates to Nero and Roxio and then uninstall both. REBOOT and try the INBUILT XP CD burning application. You won't be able to burn music CDs with this but for now, we just want to see what's happening. If that works OK, reinstall Nero (Do not install InCD!) and apply the updates.Try out your burner. If all is well, and if you think you need it, install EasyCD, apply the updates and test. |

Solve : compaq presario 2100 freezes at windows? |
|
Answer» Hi,
(1) C:\Windows Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All) Type y and hit enter
This is the name of the operating system. When you receive this message, type the name of your operating system, and then press ENTER.
When you receive this message, type /fastdetect, and then press ENTER.
7. Take out the CD ROM and type exit. Now that we have that out of the way, lets repair/replace Hal.dll 1. As above, insert and boot from your Windows XP CD. 2. When you receive the "Press any key to boot from CD" message, press a key to start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM. 3. When you receive the "Welcome to Setup" message, press R to start the Recovery Console. 4. Press the number that corresponds to the correct location for the installation of Windows you want to repair, typically this will be #1. 5. At the command prompt type: expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32\hal.dll. (where d: is the drive letter of your CD and c:\windows is the location for your Windows installation folder.) If prompted for permission to overwrite an existing version of the hal.dll file select yes. 6. Once you have expanded the file type "exit" to exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer. Now very rarely, this will not do the trick. Further action is needed!! 1. Remove your hard drive and install it in another computer with the same OS as a slave or D drive, so that you can copy an undamaged hal.dll file from that system to your hard drive. In this case Hal.dll may or may not be found in: D:\WINDOWS\System32 but regardless if found it will need to be replaced. A working copy of hal.dll will be found in: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386. Copy that version of the file to: D:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386\hal.dll as well as the D:\WINDOWS\System32 folder; if it asks to overwrite say YES. 2. Perform a repair installation of Windows. 3. Reformat and perform a complete installation of Windows. Oh my... Whats that? A functional PC! I'll be damned! Good Luck, Robbie It looks like Robbie is on to something: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314477 You've got your work cut out for you, K-mom. Let us know if there is anything we may do. Doc ================================ PS Welcome to the FORUM, Robbie. 8-)Under a repair console. the following should fix it: attrib -h -r -s c:\boot.ini del c:\boot.ini bootcfg /rebuild fixboot exit Thank you everyone who sent suggestions, I used the windows xp cd and that did the trick for now, the touch pad is acting finicky and we will have to reinstall Office etc, but everyone in the kompumom family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts. kompumomCome back and visit us any time. |

Solve : Will you get the new Windows operating system?? |
|
Answer» What do you think? I have a Xandros system which included Crossover Office. It runs Office 2000 flawlessly, but I have come to prefer OpenOffice. The file compatibility is very good. OprnOffice runs on my other linux boxes and it is free! When you say, "it runs Office 2000 flawlessly" do you mean Microsoft Office? ======================================= Thanks for the link, Backdated. I don't plan to purchase it at least till SP1 either, Peccavi, as history shows new OSes from Microsoft ship with too many bugs and it also takes too long for software to catch up with the newest flavor of Windows. 8-) Quote When you say, "it runs Office 2000 flawlessly" do you mean Microsoft Office? MS Office 2000. Yes it does! I intend to wait and see. I do that for EVERYTHING now days. I waited a year or so before getting XP, a year or so before I got an IPOD, everything. Vista is no different. I also intend on possibly TRYING an evaluation version of Vista sometime. I probably won't actually own Vista until I build my own computer when I go to college. FlameQuote QuoteYou can download the Community Edition for free (torrent only, however). I think there is a 30 day trial of Crossover included. You can buy it for a discounted price if you want it (or PM me and I will send you a copy).MS Office 2000. Yes it does! The Deluxe version has Crossover included but it is about $90. There are SEVERAL flavors. Check out www.xandros.com None of them have virus/spyware/adware issues. One license covers all personal machines you have. If I only knew anything about it.. I'll probably wait and get it a year or two after it comes out. It all depends. I have to get a new laptop for when I go to college anyway, so maybe it'll come with Vista.Quote If I only knew anything about it.. I'd suggest buying a new laptop just after Vista is released. You are bound to find a laptop with Windows XP Professional of Media Center installed on one at a lower price. Some programs might not work with Vista when it is first released, and you will have to wait till the makers of the programs provide patches to the software to download and install. Windows XP Professional and Media Center 2005 provide the best of Windows 98 SE / Me and Windows 2000 in one operating system, PLUS a few extras, like the Windows Firewall and additional commands available in the CMD window. I'm not so sure this new operating system will be much of an improvement, and may even be fraught with bugs, as was Windows Me. Doc |

Solve : Windows XP Restarting? |
|
Answer» WHENEVER I open a file over a network, my windows xp pro machine restarts as soon as I close that file. It only happens with network files, local files are no problem. As soon as I click the x to close, the screen goes blank and then the boot sequence begins. Any ideas.....ENTER shutdown -a in the Start>Run box to disable auto shutdown on error. Does the Event Viewer shed any light? The event viewer has nothing. I turned off automatic restart on system failure and it gave me a blue screen instead. The error was "Process has locked pages"...Hmm.. All I can think of off the top of my head is that you are missing a temp directory where it would be able to save the file to. But i'll keep looking... I'm interested to know what is causing this one... Also.. could you tell us a bit more details.. ie. what TYPE file are you opening.. or does it vary? And what type of network setup do you have? what OS is on the network share? Are you doing anything more than opening and closing the files? thanksWell, it doesn't seem to matter what type of file it is, have tried it with Access Databases, text files, batch files and even all types of picture files. Have tried opening files on Windows 98, 2000 server and XP. Have even tried opening a local file through the computer name, i.e. typed \\pcname\c\file.txt into explorer on the local computer and it still crashed as soon as I closed it. But the same file opens and closes fine by typing in c:\file.txt. The network setup is just standard windows xp pro settings, all that I have set is a static ip address. (but problem still occurs with dynamic ip). Have reinstalled the network card and even installed a brand new one with no success. Doesn't matter if I edit the file or not, it always crashes as soon as I close it. Hope that clears things up....!!!Yep.. sounds like Explorer is the problem... But you can browse the file structure just fine? As long as you don't actually open a file? Have you tried just using explorer and closing explorer without opening anything? Here Try This (It's XP SP2 in a downloadable file) this may correct your issues.Quote The error was "Process has locked pages"...We need the full error message exactly as it appears. Firewall details etc would also be helpful. OK, just tried to browse the network with explorer and can open any folder on any share ACROSS alll the different system types and it works fine. No crash when I close explorer. Only causes a problem when a file is opened and closed. I ran several programs(MsAccess, an accounts package etc.) that open access databases accross a network. (Don't think that accounts package relies on explorer to run) But as soon as they close and therefore the files they opened across the network are closed, the system crashes. We have our own VB program which also opens access databases across our network and the log files for that show the last thing it tried to do before system crash was close the database. This is one of the strangest little bugs I've ever come across....!!!I've attached a screen shot of the error message. This error happens with or without FIREWALLS....It's a bad driver and the following will help track that driver down (2K, XP and 2K3 only): Open Regedit and navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management Make a new DWord Value and name it: TrackLockedPages Set it's value to: 1 Reboot. Now retry and post any error message in full. You should now get something along the lines of DRIVER (Name)_LEFT_LOCKED_PAGES.The driver files is "rdbss.sys"....A supported fix is available from Microsoft, but they say it needs additional testing before general release. If you aren't badly affected, it's recommended that you wait for Win2K SP5 - WinXP SP2 supposedly already contains a fix. If you need an immediate resolution, you'll need to contact Microsoft Product Support Services. Two files will need replacing - mrxsmb.sys and rdbss.sys.Have just installed service pack 2 and the problem has not gone away.......I wasn't overly confident that it would as Microsoft don't seem to know too much about this. Have you visited Microsoft Update to see if any of the updates cure it? I can supply you with the two files from a fully patched system if you'd like to try that. Otherwise, all you can do is contact Microsoft Product Support Services.Could you send me on those files please...one last thing to try before contacting Microsoft.... |

Solve : Stop Error OX0000007B, Can anyone help?? |
|
Answer» Hello, I keep getting a stop error OX0000007B whenever I try to boot up. I can't get into safe mode or use last good configuration. I can get into the BIOS by hitting del key, can this be fixed from there? or can I at least fix it to get past the blue screen from here? The only thing I did was run Housecall because I was having problems with programs opening and closing by theirselves and thought it to be some kind of virus, so ran housecall antivirus and there was some infected files in adaware, removed infected files and was working just FINE, then after sitting idle for a few minutes it went into stop error OX0000007B. Blue Screen. I'm using my labtop now. Please HELP if ANYONE can. And I don't have the windows 2000 cd. This is the biggest problem you've listed. You will need a Windows CD sooner or later. In your case it is sooner. Backdated? When you say onboard do you mean the ethernet card inside the computer. I have no nic add ins. All my COMPUTERS are networked together. Soak? Should I remove the one inside my computer and let set and put back in? GX1_MAN: I know. Thanks Trouble: Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but i believe it is a boot sector virus. See if one of your friends has a Windows 2000 CD you can borrow and we will explain how to fix the boot sector using the Repair Console on the CD. Your only other alternative is to use some sort of rescue disks created by your anti-virus program, or the anti-virus program CD, to scan the computer for viruses and fix the boot sector. DocThanks pcdoc4christ. I will just take to repair shop. Thanks everyone!URWHi people, i seem to have a similar problem but on Windows XP. It keeps giving me a hardware malfunction with the blue screen. I can't boot normally and when i try safe mood, it stops after LOADING mup.sys from the system32 folders. Solve : "Inaccessible Boot Device"? |

Answer» When I try to turn on my computer, Windows attempts to boot, but is then interrupted by a blue screen with a stop error that says "STOP: 0x0000007B (0x81868a10, 0xC0000006, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE". Then it says to check for viruses, but I can't because it won't boot up. I've tried USING F8 start up screen, but I tried a few things nothing will work. It keeps going back to the blue screen. Then I tried looking at a Windows help page that didn't help, but it did say that if someone tried to help me these numbers MIGHT be HELPFUL :"0x4, 0, 0, 0". Answer» ok I got this comp from a friend who bought a new comp and didnt need the old one. I want to use it as network storage but its having trouble taking in incoming traffic (from INTERNET and from networked computers) When i try to download files (like windows updates) from the internet they stop in the middle, sometimes after a few MB sometimes after a few kb. When I try to OPEN files from the other computers on the network they either dont open or in the case of music they stop playing in the middle of the song. Im able to easily browse the other computers on the network from the TROUBLED computer and browse the troubled computer from the other computers (all the shared stuff) I can also use other computers to open the files on the troubled computer. Also each computer is able to PING all the other computers (with large packets 65500 bytes and large counts) |

Solve : how do i get windows 2000 to come back on?? |

When I switched it on, I put the windows 2000 disk in, which I now know I shouldn't have done, and accidentally REINSTALLED it. My computer shut down and now I can't get back on to it. Solve : XP or 2000 Prof.?? |
|
Answer» Which OS is best? Would you recommend it for a p4, 1gb ram machine that feels as if it isnt running as fast as it could? You mean XP, right? Are you serious? If that machine won't run XP well after a fresh OS installation, then there's something wrong the machine. Last summer, I installed a new hard drive for my nephew, a college student. He gave me the Win XP and Office 2003 CD's he bought - no, stole - at academic pricing from the college bookstore. The computer had a 600MHz Duron processor with 384MB PC133 memory. It ran fine with Win XP.work this one out i've got 2 machines the one downstairs (which the kids use) has a celeron 1700 mhz processor, 256 ddr memory and a 80g hard drive, the machine upstairs has a pentium 3 450 mhz processor, 320mb sdram and a 40g hard drive. both machines have windows xp HOME on them. the machine upstairs runs like the wind the one downstairs runs like a snail. know what would you put this down to the celeron processor or kids on the internet or both.Or all of the above plus less RAM. |

Solve : keyboard/mouse problems? |
|
Answer» ok...heres the situation. i got a compaq presario ez2207 with win98 given to me without a keyboard and mouse. i thought my old keyboard and mouse might work. WRONG!!! my keyboard and mouse have ps/2 jacks on them, and for some stupid reason the dumb ppl at compaq decided not to put ps/2 jacks on their computer, instead they only have usb ports. so i go buy a usb keyboard and mouse only to find out i need to install drivers for them....how the f*** do u install drivers for a mouse and keyboard when u need them to click "install" on the hardware wizard screen??? and the stupid thing is, they both work when i run win98 in safe mode *censored* i guess the best option is to install windows xp. Only if the machine has enough horsepower (RAM) to make it enjoyable and you have $100+ to shell out for XP. Are we sure it is not a hardware problem? If it is no version of Windows will fix that! If the keyboard works OK in DOS mode, then all you need is a mouse driver. There's a bootdisk here that loads real mode mouse and CD drivers. Boot from this with a CD in the drive unit and dir the CD. This will prove keyboard, mouse and CD functionality in one fell swoop. The first CD unit will be loaded at V: so a few simple tests would be to TYPE: edit - The DOS editor will open and you should be able to move the mouse cursor. dir v: - This should list the contents of the first CD unit. There is no machine specific Windows mouse driver for this box.I'm a new user here. Q. What do you think is going on when you merrily hit the keys and nothing is showing up on the monitor? thanks. :-/Quote I'm a new user here. Can you start a new thread detailing your problems please midavenue? I'm not sure how to start a new thread. I'm afraid I have no more details. This happened last night to a friend. She evidently must have been clicking on 'something' before this. I tried to click on the keyboard and nothing showed up on the monitor. ThanksTo start a new thread, click here and then click on the "Start New Topic" button. It's considered bad manners to hijack someone elses thread and it serves to confuse everyone.I understand and apologize. Have started new thread. No problem! hey thanks alot backdated ill be sure to give it a shot....right after a buy a new fan...the power supply fan konked out and now after 5 minutes the p.s. overheats and shuts down. WHEN WILL IT ALL END??? p.s. will i be able to make a floppy boot disk out of this? its small enough to FIT on a floppy (i just want to be sure, my pos computer im on right now doesnt have a cd burner) |

Solve : Downgrading to Windows 2000 on a Netbook? |
|
Answer» I have Windows XP on this netbook I purchased a few years ago. Do you think I could get a performance boost if I downgraded from XP to 2000? I wouldn't bother with going through the trouble normally, but it's the only computing device I have to use currently. What problems would I run into in the process of doing this?Good morning corlenbelspar I have Windows XP on this netbook I purchased a few years ago. Do you think I could get a performance boost if I downgraded from XP to 2000? I wouldn't bother with going through the trouble normally, but it's the only computing device I have to use currently. What problems would I run into in the process of doing this? What have you done so far to try to speed up the XP installation? Some things to try: -reduce graphical effects (transluscent selection rectangle, fading menus, use the Classic theme, etc -reduce running services. Many of the services that run by default are not necessary. Typically they won't impact performance but it can be worth trying to disable those you don't need. Disabling Luna themes can be particularly helpful since they can be relatively taxing on older Graphics cards or on older integrated chips (or, as some netbooks use, host-based processing).I SUPPOSE you're right hartbeatmr. I thought these things you mentioned would maybe be a PROBLEM but wanted to make sure there was anything else I didn't think of. BC_Programmer, I disabled a bunch of processes that were unneeded as well as changing to the classic theme and reducing effects; I don't have much experience dealing with Windows services to know what is needed and what isn't, but I guess Google will be a good tool to use in that regard. Thank you both for your replies. Visit BlackViper's site for a comprehensive list of services and what they do...Will that netbook accommodate more RAM? If so, adding more is what I'd do. A visit to www.crucial.com is a way to find out whether your computer can support more RAM.Quote from: corlenbelspar on August 11, 2012, 11:49:14 PM I have Windows XP on this netbook I purchased a few years ago. Do you think I could get a performance boost if I downgraded from XP to 2000? I wouldn't bother with going through the trouble normally, but it's the only computing device I have to use currently. What problems would I run into in the process of doing this? Yes, you get a performance boost of about 20% http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w0v_6yLKFws This is my video that shows my netbook working with Windows 2000. The only thing PROBLEMATIC is the hyper-threading, and only "Advanced Computer and Power Interface" can work on my Intel Atom N450, with all the subsequent problems of warming the netbook if you don't apply a patch provided long time ago by Microsoft. If you have a processor without Hyper-threading, Windows 2000 can install and run flawlessly if you set IDE mode in the Bios and you start the installation of Windows 2K from XP copying the files of Windows 2000 and substituting the 2K's Winnt32.exe with XP's Winnt32.exe. P.S. There are some unofficial updates that help to keep your Windows 2000 updated and, with them, you can run some programs designed for XP.I think It was wondering if I could downgrade to XP and how easy is it to do this? Also, do I need to buy a copy of XP, or can I just downgrade for free, seeing as I have alreayd bought the license for 7.Quote from: Jazz555 on January 12, 2013, 12:10:33 AM do I need to buy a copy of XP, or can I just downgrade for free, seeing as I have alreayd bought the license for 7. You need a copy of XP on genuine Windows media and a product key not in use on any other machine. Also there may be issues around product levels (Starter, Home, PROFESSIONAL, etc). Finally you may find that if you have very recent hardware, the maker has not written or released XP drivers. There will be issues if you need SATA drivers for example. I tried installing SP4, but it fails with this error..."The FILE c:\winnt\system32\stimon.exe is open or in use by another program." Solve : Adding English (US) language in Windows 2000? |
|
Answer» Hi All, That could not solve my prob. PLEASE HELP ME OUT!! Shouting for attention is ill-mannered and childish. What part of this do you not understand? Quote To install a language, click its check box and then click the Apply button. You’ll be asked for the Windows 2000 CD-ROM. Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 05, 2012, 07:37:31 AM Versions of Windows Prior to 7 were localized installations. That is- there were no "language packs", at least not as far as I recall. There are two ways in which Windows 2000 can support multiple languages - localized versions of the operating system and Regional Settings (also called Locales) within a localized version. To install a Locale you need the CD, unless it has been installed already. As he stated he has no CD he's outta luck as i said. |

Answer» I installed SP-4. Still get ERROR. Windows 2000 support is removed in VLC 1.2.0 and newer. http://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=76295 My guess is that Windows 2000 is simply too old to run those programs. It is looking for a certain procedure located in Kernel32.dll which is not even implemented in Windows 2000. You NEED XP to run that software.Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 21, 2012, 11:34:34 PM A number of programs give this error. Video LAN is one. Not all apps that work on XP and later will run on Windows 2000. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes not. Check version of VideoLAN. Windows 2000 support is removed in VLC 1.2.0 and newer. Old versions of VLC for Windows 2000: http://www.oldapps.com/VLC_Player.php?system=Windows_2000 Old versions of Flash Player for Windows 2000: http://www.oldapps.com/flash_player.php?system=Windows_2000 Probably necessary to do the same for other apps. The Oldapps site has lots of stuff. http://www.oldapps.com/ Thanks for replys I am about ready ton give it up. All I wanted was to watch movies on the old laptop, the think pad X 20. Found out that not all drivers were up to date, Even the BIOS was very old. Finally got the audio to work right and tat at least got WMP to play MP3 files. Installing Flash 9 on a Windows 2000 system is not intuitive. Got a version of the 9 series to work. But You Tube is very slow. Now TRYING different versions of VLC. I am at 1.1.7 AAAGGG... got that message again! Why is it so difficult to install old versions of anything? VLC 1.0.5 works Hello. I had a Compaq Evo N620c with Windows 2000, and Flash worked perfectly. But I got the same problem with my Armada 1700 a time back. Mozilla Firefox and Flash worked back then. This is about three-four months ago.Yeah, Adobe flash is now at 11 and many web sites just do not work with earlier versions. I don't know of nay ix.Thanks, I have given up. Many websites now require Flash 11. As far as I know, Adobe has no intention to make Flash compatible with Windows 2000. Thanks to numerous past discussions, methods have been found for installing Flash Player 11 on Windows 2000. See this thread in Adobe User Forums, which explains how to use the free HxD Hex Editor to make one simple change that will allow installation of Flash Player 11 on Windows 2000: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1012569 It's preferable to install recent Flash Player 11 using the hack rather than an old version which has security vulnerabilites and may be deprecated by some video sites. I CONCUR with another poster that VLC 1.0.5 works well on Windows 2000. Have also had good success with SMPlayer which might have some newer codecs. http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/Thank you, Outcast Will mark this a s solved. |

Solve : DacCom.dll Problem? |
|
Answer» I am running WIN200 on this computer, and have no desire to change. I have a scheduled task which runs every morning, and have preciously had no problem with it. Suddenly, it doesn't run. I checked the Task Scheduler, and the message said it was turned off. I attempted to turn it on, but was not successful ULTIMATELY Component Services told me that a file named "DacCom.DLL" was improperly installed, and had to be re-installed so that the Task Scheduler would run. Tom Brady, I see you got told on another forum that there is a Windows file called dacom.dll. If your spelling of the file named in the message is accurate, then the answer in that thread which says you may have malware is worth following up. Malware authors often use names for files which are very similar to proper Windows files. My spelling is correct. "DacCom.dll". Perhaps I didn't explain the situation properly: when I attempt to initialize "Component Services" (which controls the Task MANAGER, among other things) I get 2 error messages. The first says "Unable to initialize APPLICATION because (DacCom) is not installed properly. Please re-install this product.". The second error message is headed "Microsoft Management Console" and says " The selected snap-in did not initialize properly." I downloaded a new version of "DacCom.dll", but it didn't end the problem.Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter... Have your Windows CD handy...it'll ask for it... Let it complete and re-boot.Quote from: patio on May 19, 2012, 07:25:48 AM Go to Start/Run and type in sfc /scannow and hit Enter...Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, running the SFC program and re-booting didn't help. I'm still looking for the answer |

Solve : Convert laptop NT hard drive into Desktop sata hard drive? |
|
Answer» OK. i need to make a old IDE harddrive into a Desktop sata harddrive. OK. I am broke, so i cant spend ANY money. That is the 2nd time I have seen you use that excuse for a hardware related question. How did you think this WOULD be a free solution? He does it all the time...Quote from: kbartlin18 on December 24, 2011, 03:15:35 PM OK. I am broke, so i cant spend ANY money. Yeah, a 41-year old who has no money, makes REFERENCES to their parents and Roblox, and somehow manages to have hands about the size of a 12-year old, is completely more believable than the fact that you are really in fact just 12 and taking apart some old junk that you found in the attic. As to the problem, as others have said, you need an adapter. UNFORTUNATELY, as you seem to be coming to grips with, consumer goods typically require money. This, for you, is an unfortunate truth as you claim to have none. Of course with no money I fail to see how a 41 year old could have such a nice lamp, and electricity, and a place to live, as all three of those cost money, the latter two in fact costing a recurring amount, which makes me wonder, if you don't have a job, you really ought to think about getting one. And heaven help those around you if you manage to land one in IT.Quote from: kbartlin18 on December 24, 2011, 03:15:35 PM OK. I am broke, so i cant spend ANY money. Then you're out of luck. You'll be aware of it from within the forum. And, I'm wondering why you posted in the Windows 2000 section. Other would have been fine, I think. Regarding your actual question, SORRY, I have no idea. Solve : KERNEL32.dll Missing???? |
|
Answer» 1st of all I will admit that I have little to no KNOWLEDGE of the "inner workings" of a computer! 1st of all I will admit that I have little to no knowledge of the "inner workings" of a computer! Here is the best advice I can give you. This is the same as I would say to my close friends. Attempting to improve or maintain an older computer with Windows 2000 is not a good use of your time. I have a Windows 2000 laptop here that works fine, but I no longer have any interest in doing any improvements on it. If it started to have problems, I would just set it aside. You can get a good quality refurbished dell laptop for about $200 or less and it with have Windows XP. The old computer you might sell and recover part of the cost. If you want to get a refurbished Dell laptop with Windows XP, do a Google search on: Refurbished Dell Laptop The best choice of wireless adapter is often a USB device. These are in high demand and work on many computers, so the cost goes down and the quality is good. But any specialized wireless devices for older models TEND to be overpriced because of low turnover. That is the best advice I can offer for anybody with limited experience. I have had better results buying a NEWER refurbished computer rather that doing maintenance on my older clunkers. And I have years of experience st this thing. Otherwise, you have to remove the drivers you installed. They may not be suitable for Windows 2000. which had a major update two or three years ago. It is no longer supported. Sorry for posting in the old topic but i had similar problems... When it comes to kernel32.dll i suggest you to just reinstall the windows, put xp up and remove all the necessary things that would slow down your computer. Or there is another solution THO i dont suggest it is to go to dll files website and download kernel32.dll or read about it and see if your problem is solvable P.S. this is my 1st post. I hope it was helpful Cheers I plead ignorance. Checking with the MS knowledge Base, there are updates after nSP4 for Windows 2000. One of these is a security update for kernel32.dll which may have something to do with the problem the OP reported. Quote Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 and known issuesI had to do some work on an old laptop and can not upgrade it to Windows XP. So I have ton eat my own words. Some old computers never die, but they don't work well on XP. Hope the link above gives some clue.Quote from: dolphinmm on May 05, 2011, 09:47:09 PM "The procedure entry point WTSGetActiveConsoleId could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"!!http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/aa383835%28v=vs.85%29.aspx Quote Minimum supported client: Windows XP |

Solve : problem with mouse pointer on my laptop? |
|
Answer» I have an old Dell running Windows 2000. The USB port isn't working so i have to use the built-in mouse point usually. However when I went to use the computer a few days ago I discovered a weird PROBLEM. The mouse pointer will only allow left-clicking so it is very hard for me to do anything on that computer at all. The computer has a touch pad with buttons and also a little rubber thing in between the keys on the keyboard and another set of mouse buttons to go with it. I'm not sure what happened but neither will respond CORRECTLY and I ca only get left-clicking. I plugged a borrowed USB mouse into the PS port (with an adapter) and it worked fine, if this gives any clue as to what happened |

Solve : unlock windows? |

Answer» At first I was only ABLE to see the sign on dialog box. It said Administrator for USERNAME and would not take my username and or my password. Then I rebooted and hit the f2 key and when setup-password came up I put in my password. At this point I GOT the symbol of the window and lock on a black screen and could not go further. I have windows 2000. The computer said it was preparing to boot device list but never did or it said to hit f12 to temporary boot list, but it did not work. it said to hit f1 but that did not work. The only way to get out was to shut the machine down. Is there a way to unlock this machine? |

Solve : Visual C++ Runtime Error? |
|
Answer» I have Microsoft Picture It! Photo 2002. When I call the program and select a photo to view, I get the following message: Thank You. It worked. Now my friend has the same problem with some of her older video games. Can you help with that too please? Sure, can you get some more information from them, such as computer specs (OS, memory, etc) the game in question, has it always been that way or did it START at some point, etc A Generic suggestion for games would be to disable any unnecessary peripherals, such as TV tuner cards or Card readers, for some reason that can cause problems with some games when they go looking for controllers. My friend has the exact same computer as me: E-Machines ET1331G-07w, but with Windows XP Pro SP3 x32. She has the Millienium Game Pak for Windows 98. While most games play, we noticed yesterday that the game Bloobs had a runtime error. I changed it's compatability MODE every way possible, but this does not help. Her computer does not have a TV Tuner Card or external game controllers. I just have no idea how to fix this. Please help if you can, and thank you. |

Solve : The directory or file C: is corrupt or unreadable Please run chdsk utility? |
|
Answer» Quote from: Allan on February 23, 2010, 01:44:23 PM When chkdsk /r completes it always reports have found and repaired ONE or more errors. If you didn't see that message I suggest you MAY not have run chkdsk /r chkdsk does not always state that it "found and repaired one or more errors" one particular case in which it might neglect to do so is if there were no errors to report, at which point it simply states that "chkdsk has checked the drive and found no errors" or a message to that effect.I do not insist. If you're certain you did follow that PROCEDURE that's fine. I just want to make sure it's been DONE. Thank you. There were errors, for sure, I saw them, but it was hard to read since the computer reboots. What other software can I use? Whoa - time warp. You're responding to a post in your thread from a year ago?Sure I am; let me say this, I still haven't replaced the drive. Interestingly, Seatools for DOS claims, the drive is fine, I did a long and short SMART test. The drive doesn't want to quit but those error messages don't quit either. So theres only one thing I can try, and thats reformatting and starting fresh, perhaps it'll work otherwise I'll have to give in and finally replace it. |

Solve : Windows 2000 won't boot? |
|
Answer» Hey guys... Quick question, why would your Windows 2000 machine give Blue screens from Windows XP?To be honest I'm really not sure... I was really thinking this is supposedly a default NT BSOD, as you can see it looks AFAIK quite different from Windows Xp and + BSOD's... Why? Is a standard Windows 2k professional/NT bsod different than this?? Also, could you possible specify what's needed to properly run Win2k? I feel like I'm stuck here... I technically could change the hard drive controller, but I mean, what type does Windows 2k need to boot? Or any NT OS for that matter... Like, the minimum specifications...?As an addition, I've also tried INSERTING my Windows 98 Disk into the CD-ROM upon boot, changing the CMOS battery, switching drives... etc... But still no luck. It seems I'm having a bad day...oh wait, that is the standard 2k BSOD. nevermind.Let's clarify.... Quote I exchanged my old PC and kept the old hard driveAnd what did you do with the old hard drive? Did you just put it into new hardware environment? The reason you get this error either specific driver used for hard drive access does not like the new motherboard...the fix is normally to select a generic IDE driver before moving the hard drive, or 2000 cannot find itself as the drive is now seen as D: ...having it as the only drive would normally fix this. mike Quote from: indogo on November 25, 2010, 06:47:06 AM The reason you get this error either specific driver used for hard drive access does not like the new motherboard...the fix is normally to select a generic IDE driver before moving the hard drive, or 2000 cannot find itself as the drive is now seen as D: ...having it as the only drive would normally fix this. Hey, sorry for long wait... I know this reply / thread is a bit old but please let me add this... The Win98 drive had the bootloader on it, or atleast some of it. And upon attempting to boot 2000 by itself, I get the dreaded NT-error: NT18 BOOT FAILURE or something along those lines... any help? Oh, also, sorry FORGOT to add... I attempted to copy the bootloader over to the Win 2000 drive in addition to try to get it to work... didn't help any. (I did this from DOS) But now I'm only bottlenecked to a certain point, and since I still can't boot the Operating System due to the drive being inaccessible, thus, carpy 98 hogging the booting with it's own bootloader (last TIME I checked, 98 has the boot loader... I think) Just to let you all know I only got Windows 2k to boot by copying over the bootloader from 98 drive... Oh I already said that... Ugh, Dual-Booting back in the days is not what it is today. Quote from: deargodpleasehelp on December 11, 2010, 09:28:34 AM Hey, sorry for long wait... I know this reply / thread is a bit old but please let me add this... you mean: NTLDR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. or something? Quote from: deargodpleasehelp on December 11, 2010, 09:28:34 AM Ugh, Dual-Booting back in the days is not what it is today. For the record, I never had any problems dual-booting my Thinkpad laptop (circa 1994) between PC-DOS 7 and OS/2 for a while. At least until I realized that OS/2 was gobbling up a lot of space and I hardly ever booted into it, at which point I deleted it Lastly, regardless of what operating systems you're dealing with, when you go to create a dual-boot system, you should always have the disks for both. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 11, 2010, 09:34:18 AM you mean: Indeed I do, I have the Windows 2000 RTM disk, and the 98 Bootable cd... But, I do not have the patience (or feeling) to reinstall 98 or 2000, both have important files that keep them running (The IDE driver and Floppy + Sata drivers)... So I don't feel like reinstalling these Oses... Took me forever just to try to configure the old PC right just to run 2k without Driver issues... Then I finally replaced the PC and took the drive with it... and this is what I get? Also, not NTLDR is missing message... EDIT: Actually, upon force-booting 98 I do get: NTLDR is missing message... But not on Windows 2000... I'm not sure why it displays something different. I mean I tried searching ALL over the web, but I didn't find anything!! ;( I'm not sure why, it just says something like: NT18 BOOT FAILURE or NT** something ending with "... BOOT FAILURE" It doesn't give me the Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart. thing... I've really never seen this before, I suppose this has something to do with the bootloader?? I actually have really no idea about this error or whatever... Never seen this on any of my other PCs, must be a Windows 2000 thing? Doesn't happen on XP... And if I try to boot back into '98 it shows me the loading screen, then I get a bSOD. (BLACK screen of death; DOS Style). |
