Solve : NT 4.00 Imaged Drive Problems? |
|
Answer» We have a machine that the hard drive was imaged, that image was put on another drive. Now both drives when hooked up SHOW a blue screen stop message. The message is inaccessible_boot_device, along with it in the bug check section are some other numbers. In the driver information section of the screen it shows all the drivers that loaded. In the kernel build number and stack dump section there are other numbers and all along the right side of that it says ntoskrnl. I can't set it up to do a memory dump file so as to look at that, because the hard drive never boots past that screen. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing the blue stop screen or how to get a memory dump file to READ, for further troubleshooting of the drive?Post the entire BSOD message including the gibberish... What were these machines imaged thru ? ?The drives were attached to a USB DEVICE similiar to a drive toaster. The original was imaged, and that image was put on the second drive. We tried to check if both drives would work and both of them show this same screen. The drives were checked in a computer that isn't the original, but before the drives were imaged the original would boot up completely in this non original computer. [attachment deleted by admin]Quote from: MachTool on October 05, 2009, 09:34:38 PM ...The drives were checked in a computer that isn't the original...This is a drive controller issue, the original having a specific driver instead of the Windows generic driver. I have had this happen to me numerous times with Win2k. "...Windows NT requires a mini-port driver to communicate with the boot controller. If the device driver is corrupt or incompatible with your controller, you can replace it by copying a new driver to the %systemroot%\system32\drivers folder or through the Emergency Repair process. On computers running on a SCSI controller or ATAPI enabled systems, SCSIPORT.SYS and DISK.SYS (Windows NT 4.0 only) device drivers are also required to successfully boot..."Can I find out that information from the Registry the type of driver that was used? Its hard finding information on these computers.NT4.0 was not plug & play and does not automatically find and use the proper drivers, even if they exist in the proper directory. I'm not even sure if it has the capability to do a Repair Install. Repairing anything in NT4.0 usually requires a complete reinstall from the original CD's.It's confusing how the original drive worked in another computer before it was imaged, now that same drive gives the stop screen. I could understand how the imaged drive would give the stop screen. Quote from: MachTool on October 09, 2009, 08:02:57 AM It's confusing how the original drive worked in another computer before it was imaged, now that same drive gives the stop screen. I could understand how the imaged drive would give the stop screen. That's the reason: it's a different computer. Unlikely an identical make and model of computer.I guess I should have clarified that better, this is what I meant. The drives were checked in a computer that isn't the original, but before the drives were imaged the original would boot up completely in this non original computer. How do I get around this problem? Do you know how to make this drive record a memory dump file, so it could be put in a Windows Debugger. It seems like the only way to view the problem is to hook two computers together and troubleshoot it that way. Maybe this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q125933 or this: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q164471 The FIRST link refers to being able to get to the control panel, is there a way with the disk not being able to boot past the stop screen? Second link says there has to be an ERP made from the system in question, unfortunately it isn't available. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q125933 If you are running Windows NT 4.0, go to the SCSI Adapters option in Control Panel. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q164471 An Emergency Repair Disk from the installation of Windows NT that we are replacing the file on is required for this operation. It is possible to use an ERD from an identical installation of Windows NT on another computer, but this invites unforeseen problems if there is even a minor difference between installations.I'm sorry, I have no more suggestionsThank you for your help Comp_Com. Does anyone else have any suggestions that MIGHT be able to help with our problems? Patio I posted all the Stop screen message, is there anything you might have? |

Solve : Why 2K?? |
|
Answer» Seconded Absolutely...Got my vote too. Quote from: spock on September 12, 2009, 08:24:47 PM They should have just started with Windows 1, and named each suceeding O.S. 2,3,4, etc. Why they have to jump around is beyond me-Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME,Because that is a little boring also, don't you think? I much prefer the name Vista instead of Windows 6. Quote from: spock on September 12, 2009, 08:24:47 PM They should have just started with Windows 1, and named each suceeding O.S. 2,3,4, etc. Why they have to jump around is beyond me-Windows 95, 98, 98SE, ME,It did start that way. Windows 1.0 Windows 2.0 Windows 3.0 Windows 3.1 (for home) Windows NT 3.1 (for office) Windows 95 (for home), here's where it gets off-track Windows NT 4.0 (for office) Windows 98 (for home) Windows 2000 (for office), some call it Windows NT 5.0 Windows Millenium, (for home) Windows XP-Home Windows XP-Professional, some call it Windows NT 5.1 Windows Vista, some call it Windows NT 6.0 Windows 7, see...back on track again True. And to add to that: - Windows XP Home is also NT 5.1 - and Windows 7 is 6.1 You can notice by this that XP and 2000 have a very similar core and Vista and 7 have a very similar core. Most Windows 2000 drivers will WORK on XP (example: I have a printer with Windows 2000 drivers but not XP drivers so I always install the 2K drivers on XP Pro and it works perfectly) also proving this. Quote from: IVY on August 17, 2009, 07:50:20 PM I'll take that for a 'yes'Maybe she likes it because Whne you sa it fast... It sounds like Win Iv ! they ALL have versions numbers... the marketing names are different. |

Solve : Windows 2000 need InternetExplorer 7? |
|
Answer» Quote from: patio on August 12, 2009, 06:45:04 PM I got IE7 running on WIN2K...How, if I may ask? I did hear there were some hacks to get it to work.IE7 and IE8 do not work on WINDOWS 2000. Use a DIFFERENT BROWSER like FireFox.You can go through and make changes into the registry allowing you to get ie7 onto windows 2000, but imo, it's not worth the trouble and besides, that's ie7 was not meant to be working with 2000 anyway. I thought that we had solved this. |

Solve : 128 bit security update for Windows 2000? |
|
Answer» I WANT to access some secure sites with my Windows 2000 PC and it did not get through. I am not on a coporate network, just at HOME. I know there is only 56 bit security in my PC. I have IE6 and a link to a update took me to the Windows 2000 Server webpage when I was needing it for Windows 2000 Professional. Note: Internet Explorer 5.5 includes 128-bit encryption. If you already have Internet Explorer 5.5 installed, you do not need to upgrade your BROWSER with the Internet Explorer HIGH Encryption Pack. If you are running Windows 2000, installing Internet Explorer 5.5 will not change the current level of encryption on your computer, you will need to install the Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack. That link is dead. Can you help me? PS: Windows XP is too slow to boot on this PC.Do you have all 4 SERVICE Packs installed ? ? DLoad and install IE6 to that machine...i believe it offers the same level of security...you can download the latest version of internet explorer 6 that works with windows 2000 here.I have the latest IE for Windows 2000. I don't have SP4.why don't you have SP4? |

Solve : window nt 4.0 serivce pack 6? |

Answer» when it boots up and as it is going on the desktop a error message pops up c:/ program- cannot find the file "c/program"(or one of its COMPONETS) make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libaries are available. not sure what happen any solutions.Gonna need the full error message including the complete path...this is because the HKLM/Software/Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key has an entry whose command line does not contain quotes around it. Use regedit to navigate there and look for an entry that lists "C:\Program files" but does not have quotes around the path. Then place quotes at the front and end of the program name.I went to the start/run regedit I find hkey_local_machine/softward/microsoft/windows nt /current version I do not see the c: program flles. I do not show any for hklmAlso check Current_user, as well as your startup folder, and the RunOnce KEYS in both HKLM and HKCU. |

Solve : Reliable backup needed for Windows 2000? |
|
Answer» I have a Windows 2000 system and need a good backup program. Ghost is out due to poor customer service on other products. Acronis does not list operating system compatibility for TI but does list 2000 for Echo. Don't know why one would choose TI vs Echo. Anyone have thoughts on this? The backup program with Windows 2000 is a good program. It is NOT for users who do not want to INVEST time in learning how it works. But it does, indeed, work very well. When you do a full backup, it should be to some external device. A hard drive or a network drive. This is where more hardware can help. You decide if you want more software or more hardware. I like more hardware. After the backup, you should CREATE an emergency disk on tghe A: drive. It is not a boot disk. It is used to assist in a repair of the system with the boot CD. In the event you have a total wipe out of the hard drive, it can be restored. But this requires some method a mobile drive. A mobile drive is on a tray the can be placed into a sick PC and you se the BIOS to boot the mobile drive that has a bard generic Windows 2000. That system is th en use to restore the original from the backup. When done, remove the mobile and reset the BIOS. This is a common practice in large installations where many PCs have mostly the same hardware and OS. Here is a PAGE from a popular vendor: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/category/category_slc.asp?CatId=285 This is NOT and endorsement for any product or service. This is to show what is call a "mobile hard drive system". With this the Windows 2000 backup is very usable as is. I wrote this a 4AM, so if it is not too clear, please understand. I am just trying to be helpful. I gotta get up again at 6AM. Acronis works fine with Win2K.Two out of Ten users say "Acronis sucks". Let them......3 out of 10 Computer users should find a new Hobby...now now, guys HuH ? |

Solve : Windows 2000 Boot Loop? |
|
Answer» This may be a motherboard issue, and if so someone please tell me.
At this point, no matter what I do in the bios or the boot order, it will not find the necessary files to start from either the floppy, nor the CD. No safe mode will let me in. And there's the ambiguous 'corrupt' that I can read when it flashes the BSOD before rebooting again. The BSOD flash comes after the dos 'loading windows bars' and the Windows loading bar is filled 100%. I don't want to go bald. What do I do now? I've run out of tricks. Have you tried a different data cable / TRY loading Windows on another hard drive? If the problem follows you the it's probable a mb issue. ALAN <>< That's a good idea, but not exactly feasible with my current computer supplies. However, after talking to the wife about what she did and what not... I found out that her machine has been locking up on a consistent basis, and that she has to reset the clock whenever she reboots the machine. Considering the age of the motherboard, I opted to just replace the d*mn thing. Fortunately, Frys.com had a sale for a refurbished desktop. It has everything except a monitor. I ordered it not fifteen minutes ago and told the wife after the fact. Thank the gods for a big tax return check, I say. Plan on offloading her files after the new machine gets here. The only thing that I'm going to do to that new one is to reformat the harddrive to clean out the hoohah that comes preloaded. Clean Installs all around! Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate it. Glad you posted back and let us know what happened. Alan <>< |

I installed my ISPs virus program, restarted, and it deleted the username and pw, which i DONT remember because i had them saved. now i cant get past that screen Well it IS true. The ISP set up program, along with a security suite caused, after restart, my username and pw to be taken out of the fields. I'm still curious as to "what" fields- was this the windows 2000 login dialog? because WINLOGON never populates the password combo under any circumstances (if it did, that would defeat the entire purpose of a password). (although in specific cases where no password exists or TweakUI was set to log-on automatically it will do so) Unless of course this isn't the logon dialog, but perhaps another logon dialog, say, for logging onto the internet. This would make a lot of sense, since the ISP setup program would replace them. If this is the case, a quick call to your ISP with your billing information, and they should give you that information. If this IS the windows 2000 dialog, (which as stated before is only possible in CERTAIN circumstances where a PW was not set at all or tweakui was configured to start the machine automatically (in which case it should be consulted)). If somehow, by some w2k logon dialog was actually set to workaround security and populate the password box WITHOUT user intervention, and that information is forgotten and it is no longer populated... There is no way to retrieve the password. any mechanism for doing so would complete nullify any purpose for the password to have been set in the first place. there might be a way for you to logon, however; if the administrator account has no password (which if I recall correctly, is the default), you should be able to place "administrator" in the user name box and leave the password field blank, and press OK. This should allow you to recreate a new account. |

Solve : should I install Windows 2000?? |
|
Answer» I have been USING Windows 98 for several years but have recently acquired devices that are not COMPATIBLE with it. If I decide to install Windows 2000 what kind of problems am I likely to experience? Will I lose information or will some of my "stuff" not work anymore? Mainly I use my computer for email and PC games (some on line, some just through software) and general information look up on the internet. I'd really appreciate any thoughts about Windows 2000 and advice on the best way to proceed before I decide to install it. Thanks!I haven't gone from windows 98 to 2000, but I did go from 98SE to XP, which is fairly similar. I've only DONE clean installs of Windows 2000, though. |

Solve : a windows 2000 computer has suddenly stopped booting? |
|
Answer» It just goes to the gateway screen and stays there. I think it might be a problem with my antivirus or something. Anyways, how would I fix it?Without any details it's EXTREMELY hard to tell...its a gateway 256MB RaM, 120GB HD, intel celeron processor you think virus in your computer. remove virus using kaspersky. Please stop suggesting this for every PC issue you come across here. The computer doesnt boot up anymoroe, it just stays there with a flashing cursor. I dont want to reintall my operating system from SCRATCH cause it would mean wiping off all the files on my HD. A friend of MINE had a problem LIKE this once, and he said something about rewiting the mbr or something. How would I do that, if I cant even get the computer to reboot Or is something else I can try |

Solve : how to make non rebooting windows 2000 laptop reboot? |
|
Answer» The laptop suddenly went dead, MEANING I cant get it to reboot anymore. When I power it on, it just sits there with a blinking cursor. And there are quite a few important files on the laptop. So how can I get it to work properly and reboot LIKE it should MultiBoot Disable Express Boot Popup Delay Boot Order: Notebook Optical Device First Notebook Hard Drive Second Im guessing Notebook optical device is the CD Drive, and it is already set to the first boot device. Yet when I power the computer off and back on, the computer doesnt boot from the CD drive. How do I set the boot device to the CD Drive Did you select F10 after changing it which in the BIOS "saves changes and exits " ? ? What CD are you trying to boot to ? ?Yes I did the F10 to save the BIOS settings. ACTUALLY I got it to work. But the thing is there is no repair option. I insert the WinXP OS (the laptop has WinXP on it not Win2000), then I do the F8 to accept the EULA, then I should see the option to repair (meaning there should be an option where I can press r). why isnt there one? The HP website also says that I might nead to reseat the RAM, is it really true that if the RAM is not seated properly, the system just KEEPS booting to the Advanced option screen over and over again? You have nothing to lose by re-seating the RAM so go ahead and do so... Make sure all power sources aredisconnected and you are grounded. Instructions for a Repair Install of XP You need an official XP CD for this to work. Read through it to become familiar with the procedure and also print out a copy for reference before you START... Best of Luck and let us know...Actually I fixed the problem. I did the reseating of the RAM but that didnt work. I tried to backup the data, but I got the error 'this disk is unmountable'. Then I did a chk of the disk and I found out the mbr was unreadable. so I rewrote the mbr. and that fixed it. |

Solve : Windows 2000 only boots in safe mode? |
|
Answer» I was having trouble with my network password in Windows 2000 and tried many times to reboot, sometimes in safe mode, and, now that I know the login and password, the computer will only boot in some mode looking like safe mode, but when I go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager, I see that the Ethernet Controller, PCI Device and Video Controller (VGA COMPATIBLE) , all show up under other devices with a yellow question mark on them, and the system will only boot in 16 colors, and has no internet connectivity. (Cable through a NIC)This is normal as safe mode only loads a minimal list of Drivers...enough to boot with and not much more... |

Answer» when ever i boot up my gateway windows 2000, sect PAK 4, it starts to run, and then starts shutting on and off. eventually the screen turns a grey color, and then to blue. the blue window that comes up says"stop(c000021a) fatal system error. the windows logon process system process failed unexpextedly terminated with a status of 0x00000000 the system has been shut down". what do i do. it is my brothers comp and he bought it uses, with no backup disk, or whatever it is called. we know that it is infected, but had still been working. that is till a couple of days ago. now when you turn it on, that is what happens. it KEEPS repeating the same process, shutting on and off, but never getting booted up and ONLINE. help me please?Judging by the error messages and the frequency of the issues it sounds to me as if you are going to need to track down an official Win2K CD..... |
