This is a drive controller issue, the original having a specific driver instead of the Windows generic driver. I have had this happen to me numerous times with Win2k.

That's the reason: it's a different computer. Unlikely an identical make and model of computer.I guess I should have clarified that better, this is what I meant.

Answer» I just "accidentally" discovered an interesting feature while messing about- it's possible to make a folder inaccessible to most every program really EASILY. It relies on the way the Unicode file access functions parse the filename, as WELL as how explorer and most programs deal with it as well. step 1: open COMMAND prompt step 2: use md to create the directory- include the FULL path. you must prepend \\?\, for example: Code: [Select]md \\?\D:\testfolder. I'm not sure how quote parsing works, but I don't believe this "feature" will work with quotes around the name. Since for the most part this just creates that folder after the \\?\, but adding that allows us to basically override the command prompt BEHAVIOUR that detects and removes trailing periods. You can copy files into the folder from command prompt, specifying the space, but trying to view the contents with Dir returns a error- you cannot seemingly access the files. And in fact, you cannot- Windows explorer errors out as well, saying the location is unavailable. The question is why? well, prepending \\?\ to a filename in file functions says to the function that the string can be much longer- under most circumstances (without the \\?\, that is) a path is limited to 240 characters). this is used to remove that limit. Without the \\?\, most programs (the command interpreter, explorer) strip off ending periods before calling the function. for some reason they don't do this when \\?\ is given. Note however that even specifying the \\?\ in the address bar/location bar will not help- since it will strip off the period for user input (you cannot access it because explorer is stripping off the period at the end of the directory name). Be warned that since explorer cannot access it, neither can file open/SAVE dialogs, so save them elsewhere and them copy them into the "secret" folder. nice thanks.

Answer» when it boots up and as it is going on the desktop a error message pops up c:/ program- cannot find the file "c/program"(or one of its COMPONETS) make sure the path and file name are correct and that all required libaries are available. not sure what happen any solutions.Gonna need the full error message including the complete path...this is because the HKLM/Software/Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run key has an entry whose command line does not contain quotes around it. Use regedit to navigate there and look for an entry that lists "C:\Program files" but does not have quotes around the path. Then place quotes at the front and end of the program name.I went to the start/run regedit I find hkey_local_machine/softward/microsoft/windows nt /current version I do not see the c: program flles. I do not show any for hklmAlso check Current_user, as well as your startup folder, and the RunOnce KEYS in both HKLM and HKCU. Also be advised that (IIRC) both the windows and the "Windows NT" key under the software/Microsoft key have "Run" keys.I found the run once- run oncex-run services and they all have default(value not set). I am not seeing any file for current USERS in the REGISTERY .interesting. Can you post a Hijackthis log? I decide to log in as a another user and gave that user administrator privileges and that message doesn't come up for that user. thanks for the HELP. it does take awhile to boot up to the desk top.

So the problem im having is that the fellow put a password on the administration account for Windows 2000 and now he doesn't remember it. Im going to try a FLOPPY from a friend later on that he's not using anymore, but with the CDs it won't let me. I can't change the boot order either. Its for the administration account. But in the BIOS it won't let me change the boot order, or anything else REALLY with out the admin password. Answer» I acquired an HP Pavilion 1795 computer which came to me with Windows 2000 installed although the computer has the MS tag on it showing that it originally had XP installed.I have the original Windows CD for XP which says it is for a new computer only. Do I first uninstall XP, then 2000 and how do I retain my apps so they end up with XP? I do not know nor can I find UNINSTALL for either 2000 or XP, how do I find it? Tried updating from the Windows Update site and it says that I have to download and install the newest version. I click Install Now and it goes through two screens, the download and then the copy files, up to 100% each and then I get the ERROR NUMBER. I Googled the error number and found a number of sites with answers, none of which worked. Some had me changing the registry, others wanted a registry change but the folder they referenced was not there. Some wanted me to download the validation tool and run from the desktop, but validation is not valid for Win2k. I have set automatic updates to daily but don't hold much hope. Answer» I was having trouble with my network password in Windows 2000 and tried many times to reboot, sometimes in safe mode, and, now that I know the login and password, the computer will only boot in some mode looking like safe mode, but when I go to Control Panel, System, Device Manager, I see that the Ethernet Controller, PCI Device and Video Controller (VGA COMPATIBLE) , all show up under other devices with a yellow question mark on them, and the system will only boot in 16 colors, and has no internet connectivity. (Cable through a NIC)This is normal as safe mode only loads a minimal list of Drivers...enough to boot with and not much more... What else happened prior to this to get you to this stage ? ?While trying to access the printer on this machine, I had to set a network password and I created a new user and when I had to reboot the computer I couldn't REMEMBER the USERNAME, so the password wouldn't work. I had never had a password for the administrator, but that wouldn't work without one either. So I went to http://www.loginrecovery.com and when they showed me the usernames I was able to get into the computer, but it had the appearance of being in safe mode, although it didn't say so in the corners of the screen. After finding the video driver was no longer there, it appeared that I had restored to one of the original modes, before installing the video driver, and I have since installed the drivers and can now see the proper resolution and colors, but the gap in email dates is about 1 year. I must have gone back to an older setting. It is now working, but a LOT of email etc are missing. I have no idea what that service could have DONE to your machine as i am unfamiliar with what they do...

If i go into add/remove programes and look for the microsoft office 2000 it has a flag in the left column, If i try to repair, or reinstall it goes about half way through the process then comes up with the same message as above. Can anyone tell me what has happened, and how can i fix this. I do not have the original mic office disks as we have moved house and i have no idea where they have gone. (my kids i think lending to friends). All my home accounts and PERSONAL contacts etc are on my excell files. I do have backups on two seperate usb storage drives, but can't use them as they try to open office 2000 in order to read them. Hoping someone can tell me what has happened to creat the above problems, and can i fix it without going out and buying another mic office 2000 disk. In the meantime, try Open Office at www.openoffice.org You can download it for free, and use it to read and edit your Excel files. I just cant get into anything due to the strange commands that come up as above. The version of Office installed on the system appears to have become corrupted. (I'm such a genius!) I've not seen those responses, before. Hi Kiwi Alan, You're getting a message which says "a valid source for Office 2000 SR1 cannot be found." This suggests that the registry entries RELATING to Office 2000 are intact, but there is a problem with the executable file and/or an essential DLL file. DLL files are easy to replace, but the executable is another matter. Have you tried opening Windows Explorer and double-clicking c:\program files\microsoft office\office\excel.exe? If that works (and I'd be surprised if it does) then it means your shortcut is corrupted, and that's very easy to fix. Always eliminate the simplest options first. If that doesn't work, then AEGIS is dead RIGHT, and your Office installation is corrupted. And if you don't have the disc, that could be your blooming lot, mate. So then OpenOffice is your best solution. If you have the time and patience, you could check whether it's just a missing or corrupted DLL file. Download Microsoft Dependency Walker (free download) from http://www.dependencywalker.com and identify the essential DLL files for Excel.exe. There are only NINE or ten. Make a note of any which are missing from your Office folder and/or your Windows System32 folder. Go to a site such as WWW.DLLDLL.COM and download new ones. Replace the missing one(s), and see if that fixes the problem. If none were missing, that's where the patience comes in. Try replacing the existing DLL files one by one and see whether that (eventually) fixes the problem. If it doesn't then you would have to suspect that Excel.exe itself is corrupted. And that's game shot, as they say. Because without the CD there's no way you can replace that legally (unless you buy another copy on eBay). Aussie Alan
