Solve : Directx 9.0?

Answer»

Hello, I am having trouble installing directx 9.0. I am trying to install need for speed most wanted and when I try to install directx 9.0 off of the game cd I get an error saying "directx did not copy a required file" and when I try to install directx 9.0 febraury sdk then I get the error -5. I am running windows xp pro.I even tried this http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=891890 but dxxpdbg does not exist.Maybe you should download DirectX from Microsoft: Microsoft DirectX DownloadsI did, but I downloaded it again from your link and it downloaded nicely, went to install started and then "directx did not copy a required file".I have service pack 1 installed if that helps. Why not go ahead and upgrade your OS to SP2? That, in itself, may fix the problem. Even if it does not, you're better off with SP2.Because after installing ps2 in our lab computers at school and also friends have reported the same, sp2 causes all kinds of headaches.I followed these steps and I am almost there.
Try these steps mate

1. Delete the folder CatRoot2 from C:\Windows\System32 (if Windows XP) or
C:\WINNT\System32 (if Windows 2000).
2.The DirectX folder under C:\Windows\System32 (if Windows XP) or
C:\WINNT\System32 (if Windows 2000).
3. The {44BBA855-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} folder under
C:\WINDOWS\RegisteredPackages (if Windows XP) or
C:\WINNT\RegisteredPackages (if Windows 2000).

Try the installation of DirectX and it will succeed

Now it installs directx BUT at the final end like right when its 100% it fails and says check the log so I did and it is error -9. And according to the error code list from Microsoft
-9
(INTERNAL) Setup detected an internal error. There are only two situations known to cause this error message: • Dsetup.dll could not load the Dsetup32.dll and Dsetup16.dll files.
• Setup attempted to call a unicode version of Setup Advanced Programming Interfaces (APIs), which are not implemented.
If you receive this error message, rename the Dsetup16.dll and Dsetup32.dll files. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files Or Folders.
2. Type the following line in the Named box, and then click Find Now:
dsetup16.dll
3. Click the file, and then click Rename on the File menu.
4. Change the name to a .dxx extension. The file name should READ as follows:
Dsetup16.dxx
5. Repeat steps 2-4 for the Dsetup32.dll file.
6. Reinstall DirectX.

I searched for dsetup16.dll and found nothing while dsetup32.dll came up with 4 results and still searching. I will continue and see what happens. If this works I will be able to help alot of people looking for help on this topic in other places. Microsoft supports sucks! So I am here so far:

Because after installing ps2 in our lab computers at school and also friends have reported the same, sp2 causes all kinds of headaches.
I installed SP2 on 11/16/04. No problems. I was reluctant for awhile, after SP2 was released, to install it, but finally decided to do so after READING comments in forums. Here's an article worth reading on SP2: The Dark Side of Windows XP Service Pack 2. Althgough the title has negative connotations, the article actually discusses steps to take before installing SP2 to insure a successful installation.
If all hardware and software is compatible and it's very unlikely that it's not, then SP2 will install just fine and without problem.
Well over 90% of failed or problematcal SP2 installation is due to virus/malware INFECTION. Most of the rest is caused by over aggressive AV.

Empty all temp folders and internet caches.
Ensure that your system is completely clean.
Download SP2.
DISCONNECT from the internet.
Disable AV.
Install SP2.and what happens if,in microsofts infinate wisdom it is decided that your system is a pirate version, what happens to the files that may have been overwritten??

Solve : Windows XP and Word 2000?

Answer»

Hello, I hope this is the right place to post this :-/.

We've recently bought a new PC with Windows XP installed on it. We're running Word 2000 on it. The problem is that the Word documents do not look like they did when running it on Windows 98; they're much smaller and don't fill the screen.

In other words, the document stretched out across the entire page on Word in 98 but does not fill the page widthways in XP.

Much searching of Word and XP has ensued but we're still none the wiser as to how to change this and, basically, get back the 'look' of Word as it ran on 98.

Any ideas?

Thank you. I have used office 2000 in Xp for a long time and I didn't have any problems. Are you 100% sure that you have correctly configured the page? or maybe you just have to change the zoom level or the view.

Just guessing....Are you also using a different size monitor now? Are you using the same resolution on your monitor as you used with Win 98?

Have you tried the different Views for Word 2000? With Word 2003, if I select Web Layout view, the Word document spreads across the entire Word screen. If using Normal view, have you tried just changing the right margin setting, to move it further to the right?I've altered the zoom and the view but while they make a difference they don't make things the way they were on 98. If you change the screen size then it affects the FONT size and the two don't seem to marry correctly.

The monitor size, is the same, in fact it's the same monitor. Altering the resolution doesn't help either.

But thanks for taking the time to read and reply; it's greatly appreciated. You're probably in a different viewing mode. Try each of the OPTIONS on the view menu (at the top of that menu), until you find the one that you're used to.Thanks for that.

It makes some difference but it seems IMPOSSIBLE to get the screen to look identicle to how it did with 98 despite the fact the monitor is exactly the same.Shine:

Try clicking the middle button in the upper, right-hand CORNER of Word (the one with a square on it). That should restore the window up.

DocI have Windows XP and I have installed Word 2000. It WORKS fine for me.
I am sure you have already tried it, but click VIEW, then click PRINT LAYOUT. If that doesnt work, click VIEW and then click NORMALL.
Are any of these the same as what you had in 98?Hi, I think that the problem is resolved pretty much now. Certainly, adjusting settings and sizes has made it as close as possible to the old view. It seems the fact that XP has a smallest screen resolution of 800 x 600 and 98 has a slightly different size is what was causing the trouble; it makes it impossible to get exactly the same screen view.

Many thanks for all attempts made to help!

Solve : Regarding Sound Card?

Answer»

I am running off of Windows 2000, my sound card or something is messed up. All I need to know is 3 things; How do I locate the MAKE and MODEL of my sound card, How do I locate what my CPU is, and how do I find out how much RAM I have? :-/Everest Ultimate Edition.
http://www.lavalys.com/

Everest Free Edition.
http://www.comcen.com.au/~fed/everest.zipAnd what am I supposed to do with these sites? For the CPU and Ram google a program called CPU-Z, it gives you everything you need to know about the 2. If you don't want that just do:

Start>Run>dxdiag

That will also tell you what you have, just not in as much detail.Download, install & run the program.
The 2nd one is a discontinued free version, you would have to unzip it after downloading.Hmm...OKAY I got my CPU and RAM info, but what about my soundcard?
What does this Lavalys thing do?Everest from Lavalys is a STAND alone program that will tell you all about your computer.
It is HIGHLY regarded and will present you with no problems.

Solve : Windows 2000, Resizing Active Desktop Objects?

Answer»

Hello!

My name is Jeff and i have a problem with Windows 2000 web content on my desktop. I can add active content, but am unable to resize or move it. Nothing happens when I hover over the content, click or double click. The only thing I can do is add/remove the content and scroll.

I can't find any settings stopping me but knowing Windows theres probably something i've missed.

If you have any idea what MIGHT be stopping me from resizing and moving active content or have had similar issues please reply! All replys are much appreciated.

THANKS, [smiley=beer.gif]

Jeff

(I have attached a screen SHOT of the content)I can't really think of when I had my 2000, but there should be a control panel of some sort under the start menu, then an option for apearrances. Thanks for the reply but unfortunately the only appearance options are as above. I'm sure there is an option to lock desktop items resulting with content being unmovable but i cant find it anywhere.I believe Have the WORLD Delivered to Your PC's Desktop probably has the answer to your question.

Solve : 2000 pro?

Answer»

Ok here it is. I have a friend who's neice CHANGED the password on her laptop and can't REMEMBER it, now she can't log in. Is there anyway to fix this without re-installing? They don't have the Windows 2000 professional CD.

The laptop is an IBM thinkpad 600E.

Any help would be nice.
ThanksAre you referring to the laptop BIOS password or the Windows password?

If the FORMER you are SOL. If the latter you are not quite as SOL, but you will need a CD. Do you have a valid COA on the machine? Why no CD?

It was the windows password. After more and more searching I found a program that resets the passwords of any account. So I reset it to nothing and sent the laptop on it's way.

They didn't have the windows CD because she bought it second hand.

Thanks though.Sure no problem. You can find all the information here. It's a good program. You can use it on a floppy or a CD, then you BOOT to it and follow the STEPS. Usually you should be able to follow the defaults. Just make sure it's the right account.

It says only SP3 for Win 2000 but it worked on SP4 for me.

Noi didnt write crappity smacked ?=

wth who is editing my posts ?

wth does tht mean ?

and no ?

i need a sulotion not a "no"Language! Do you type to your mother like that?

First get a working CDROM. THey are cheap, and you will need one.

Then boot with that new CDROM and reinstall Windows 2000.

There is no other solution worth mentioning. Now you know.

i dont type to my mother i talk *

and tha cd rom is fine..

like if i put it in this comp it will work..

btw it aint got sound drivers installed..

and i downloaded them but cant install..

i got a zip wit like 30 useless files.. ne1 was a setupBoot with a LEGAL crappity smacked Windows 2000 CD and reinstall then. u spammer..

check this out..

THA CDROM DOESNT WORK

it cant have a prob wit tha cables.. cause ive checked

but it may have wit BIOs settings.. they r *censored* up :s

each time i turn on tht comp i must change CPU settings. If the cdrom works in another computer then is should be bootable in the problem computer.
Set it as the 1st boot device in bios & boot it up with W2000 disk in the cdrom.Go to another computer then and MAKE boot disks off of the Windows 2000 CD. Then boot and install from the bootdisks. Thus eliminating the so called "crappity smacked up" CD ROM drive.

You will need 4 floppy disks for the boot disks.

To create Windows 2000 setup disks on a computer RUNNING Windows NT 4.0, 2000, or XP

1. Insert the Windows 2000 CD into the CD-ROM drive.

2. From the DOS window, move to the CD-ROM drive by entering the drive letter followed by a colon (usually d: or e:).

3. Change to the bootdisk directory by entering: cd \bootdisk
4. Enter the following command: makebt32.exe

The program should run and prompt you to insert your floppy disks to create the set.

One thing to note, it's a slower install than from a CD. So you should look into getting a new CD ROM if you think the other one is faulty.

I think not What has he done to this poor computer to get it so crappity smacked?

If we fix this one issue, will it be enough?

By the way, how about some crappity smacked details about this machine? Is this a legal copy of Windows? You said something about a zip file?

Solve : Outlook 2000- renaming Inbox folder?

Answer»

I reset the reminder TASK for a friend's birthday then browsed the internet for awhile. When I went BACK to Outlook the Inbox folder was renamed "xxx's Birthday". Since special folders can't be renamed how did this happen and how do I GET it to go back? I can't delete this folder either and it's really bothering me.
Maybe it wouldn't be so bad if this person were a good friend but she's just an acquaintance!

I hope someone can help.
May this is a sign?
REINSTALL it.

Solve : Outlook - all emails have attachments?

Answer»

For some reason, and only recently, almost every email I receive from anyone has an attached .txt file accompanying it. The content of the .txt file is whatever is in the body of the email and the name of the file is the subject of the email. I contacted my hosting company who handles my email, and they said it's a problem with OUTLOOK. Has anyone heard of such a thing, and have any ideas as to how to fix it? Thank you in advance. You are receiving mails in html more than plain text format. send yourself an email in plain text (tools--options--send) to see if you get attachment too...We're on to something here... when I sent myself an email in HTML format, there was no attachment. When I did as you instructed and changed it to plain text, that is when the attached .txt file showed up. Is there some setting I need to change so that when others send me emails I don't get the .txt attachment? Thank you!!The only option I can see regarding this issue is, unchecking the box of "Read all messages in plain text" in the Reading Messages section under Tools->Options->Read tab. Uncheck that option and see if it's any good.

How you used to get messages before? Did you make any changes that may cause this?

let us KNOW...I couldn't FIND anything that said "read all messages in plain text". Under Tools > Options, I have:
Preferences
Mail Delivery
Mail Format
Spelling
Security
Other

I looked under all of those, but couldn't find anything about reading messages in plain text. I am using Outlook 2000.

Thank you again.# Select Tools | Options... from the menu in Outlook.
# Make SURE the Preferences tab is selected.
# Click E-mail Options....
# Make sure Read all standard mail in plain text and Read all digitally singed mail in plain text are unchecked.
# Click OK.
# Click OK again.Reading emails in plain text is far safer.Quote

Close original message on reply
Save copies of sent items
Display notification of new mail
Automatically save unsent messages

Then there is an "advanced email options" tab, but there is no option there to read mail in plain text. There is ALSO
a "tracking options", but it's not under that one either.

Solve : clock out of sync??

Answer»

I have been doing that repeatedly. It still won't install the software upgrades. I've been searching for them elsewhere, and have found 2 of them so far...I remember Microsoft used to have some downloads that were dependent on other ones FIRST being installed & the computer being re-booted but that was years AGO with win98.
Are these critical patches from Microsoft?Eureeka!!! I found the software updates by doing a Google search and downloaded them. Now I can get the list of updates from Microsoft. I couldn't have gotten that far without your help. Many thanks!!

Yes, they are critical updates, but for Windows 2000 (althought it is upgraded from 98se)Windows 2000, you are a wise PERSON. (Unblonde)
I hope we helped you somehow.Yes, you were very helpful. Many, many thanks. Keep up the GREAT work!!Had many other problems and had to fdisk, format and reinstall Windows2000. Everything else works, except Windows Update scan. There is another place to get these critical updates if anyone else has this problem:

www.softwarepatch.com/windows/

It would be easier if the danged update scan would work, though. Microsoft--go FIGURE [smiley=angry.gif]

That is strange, a clean install and the M$OFT updates still didn't work :-?
Did you change any settings at all before trying the update? No, I just installed the OS. Then went straight to Microsoft Update. When I went to their troubleshooting, they had the error I got ( 0x80072F8F), and it just said to make sure my time and date and time zone are correct (which they were), then to Run regsvr32 SOFTPUB.dll. from the start menu (succeeded), but still not fixed. Maybe the problem is on their end?Firewall setting perhaps?

You should temporarily turn off any real time AV when downloading/installing MS updates.I went for the MS updates before installing the firewall & anti-virus programs (ZoneAlarm) when I reformatted. Thanks for the replies and all the advice. I'll keep trying... Meanwhile, any more suggestions? You should never connect to the internet or any other public network without at least rudimentary firewall protection. You may well have been infected, it only takes seconds.I wonder if the 98SE--->W2K upgrade has any bearing on this?
Do you know anyone with W2K disk? No, I don't know anyone with a 2K disk. But the first time I formatted and installed the upgrade, the update worked. And the 2nd time. Yes, I tend to reformat whenever I have a major problem. It just seems easier. I'm definitely no computer genious (I leave that to you guys). [smiley=thumbsup.gif]

I know I shoudn't connect to the web without the firewall and anti-virus, but I wondered if that was stopping the update from working. Don't think it was, though. If I were you I'd get a copy of a full version W2K disk, it's not cheating as you do have 98SE + the W2K upgrade.
Then do a clean install. Your firewall shouldn't cause any problems with Windows updates but it seems that ZA6 is fast beoming a pain in the wotsits.
Your real time anti virus should be temporarily disabled whilst downloading/installing Windows updates. It can cause major problems.

If you decide to buy a copy of Win2K, try and source a version with SP4 already slipstreamed.

Solve : CD-RW ,ME , will play won't record?

Answer»

Hi, Compaq Presario 7000us ME 2000 windows here. Hope SOMEONE has had this problem. I put a blank disc in to record and it is not recognised as being blank, Ive tried four different brands of disk . I ran the quick restore cd's which came from Compaq. I was prior to that running windows XP which was installed by a friend of a friend. The PC came with windows Me . Adaptec is the program that came with it to creat cd's . Oh it will not let me change the rc-rw drive alpha . I have deleated both drives from the properties and let the PC put them back which made no difference. USED the auto search for updated drivers and the drivers are already the most updated. Is there any way to check if I have a physical problem with the re writer part . I was able to copy cd's prior to getting some kind of virus which may or may not been part of my problem. My floppy disk will record . Thanks for reading this .You've got corrupted device files somewhere then. A reinstallation is the sure fire way to resolve this, although if you can possibly avoid reinstalling ME, so much the better. Replace it with 98SE or XP! (If you have a LICENCE for ME, you are automatically LICENSED for earlier versions of Windows too.)Thank you for your response , A bad FILE some where in there makes sense. Here`s the problem , I have reinstalled Me four or five times. When I had XP and the virus I couldn`t dump the hard drive through the DOS comands , I had a co worker that walked me through that process he is no longer available. So I wonder if I still have things running or maybe just stuck in the hard drive that keep corrupting my Me windows. I think before I reinstall anything I should do that first. I may be calling it the wrong thing , it was through the run programs window . I forget what I had to type in how ever I know it works because I watched the guy that installed the XP deleat the hard drive. So if you've read this far would you be able to tell me the comand , then I`ll know that is or is not the problem. Thanks again

Solve : ntldr missing from xp?

Answer»

Had a problem e,very one said I had a virus so ran my rescue cd's. But when I got to end of last disk . get hp blue screen then dos screen saying ntldc is missing have ran install TWO TIMES, both times same outcome. What am I dooing wrong.
Please helpPeter
Thanks for the reply. The only thing on that computer is the mouse key board and MONITOR. any thanks againThanks Peter,
UNFORTUNATELY my lap top runs 2000. guess I may have to nd up having to have some one else fix it. don't know any one with xpThought all the rescue disks from hp should have all that but guess not. Thanks any way for your help. This is a very common XP problem and eminently solvable.

See here.

Good luckMade a mistake have me instead of 2000 .will that still work?Am confused. Why are you using Win 2000\ME when the possible cure lies with the pc running XP. Your subject is ntldr missing from xp :-?

Perhaps you should restate which OS has the problem...Sorry about the confusion . the problem computer is running Windows XP .had a virus so ran my rescue cd's. Was trying doing a total re format. But when I got to end of last disk . get hp blue screen then dos screen saying ntldc is missing have ran install two times, both times same outcome. One of the POSTS said to copy missing files. from computer I was using to write these posts.I thought it was runing Microsoft 2000 however when I checked I realized it is ME edition . Hope this clears up the conffusion trying to find some one locally I can get to make a floppy of the ntird file.
Thanks every one for the help. You also get this message when a non-bootable floppy is left in the drive. Does this apply by chance?Wish there was but alass no.Palmetto - thanks for coming back.

If you suspect a malware attack the last thing you should do is try to format/reinstall. There are lots of free malware removal tools available to remove 99.99% of all known infections.

Now understand that you do not have a full cd of the XP OS

Here's a site worth a visit provided you have access to a good pc with a floppy drive and the pc with the problem also has a floppy drive. http://www.tinyempire.com/shortnotes/files/ntldr_missing.htm

Good luckFormat a floppy disk in Windows 2000 or XP and copy the ntldr and ntdetect.com files to it.

Choose the right XP boot.ini file from the two standard examples below depending on whether you are using XP Home or XP Professional and copy and paste into Notepad then save as boot.ini

Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP Professional" /fastdetect
Code: [Select][boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="XP Home" /fastdetect
Then copy the new boot.ini file to the floppy.

Now put the floppy in the XP computer and see if it will boot to the hard drive.

Hopefully the XP computer does have a floppy drive.

Solve : how to load windows without a cd-rom drive??

Answer»

I have an older ibm APTIVA laptop that does not load. I get the ntdlr is missing. There are no cr-rom or FLOPPY drives. So i figured i WOULD try attaching an external cdrom via usb and load windows. I changed my boot order and it will not load from the external cdrom. Anyone know any other ways i can get this laptop fixed? With no boot device other that the hard drive, you have MAJOR issues. I would look for another solution, like getting a floppy and/or CD if you intend to use it.I have an external cdrom drive that i connected via usb but it will not boot to it. the operating system on it is windows 2000. Is there a key i can press during start up that will send it into dos or SAFE mode? You can press F8 during startup to boot into safe mode as far as I know, but I'm not 100% sure that will HELP you boot from that external CD drive.

Solve : Batch file W2K3: Create DIR w/today's date, etc.?

Answer»

I did a quick search and could not find what I need. I have tried this on my own and came very close... but no cigar!

Here is my scenario: I have COMPUTER out in the SHOP that contains all the CNC programs we USE daily in our manufacturing process. This computer up-loads and downloads these CNC files from each of several machine tools via hardwire and a port switcher. Several semi-qualified people send/receive these files daily, and they manage to "hose up" files constantly. I do a normal back up every night, but some times a file is CORRUPTED and we don't know it until 6 months later. My back-ups normally only go back a maximum of 8 weeks.

I now have plenty of network storage available and would like to COPY (not BACKUP) the directory (about 35 MEG) once a week to a network folder. What I attempted to do was write a batch file to be run on my utility server as a scheduled task. What I want it to do is; create a DIR named as "today's date", and copy the target directory in its entirety, then close.

My last attempt would create the new Dir and name it properly, but then it copies the target directory to the root instead of the newly named DIR. I'm sure it is just an issue with me being "SYNTAX" challenged. The only way I ever GET syntax right is copy/paste!!!

My utility server is running Windows Server 2003 .NET and the target machine is a Windows Advanced Server 2000.

Below is what I have that DOES work. This will create a new DIR and name it properly. What I can't seem to do is then make this newly created DIR the target to copy the files to.

I would appreciate any assistance with the second half of this batch file.

@echo off
R:
cd R:\MACHINE PROGRAMS
for /F "tokens=2-4 delims=/- " %%A in ('date/T') do set var= %%A%%B%%C
md %var%
cd R:\MACHINE PROGRAMS\%var%\

Solve : Windows 2000 Server Question?

Answer»

How do I USE Remote Desktop/Access with Windows 2000 server?Be more specific please...
What is your client OS and etc.

Open Adminostrative Tools--ROuting and Remote Access. Right click on your server and choose Configure and Enable Routing and Remote Access, to run the wizard. Click Next (Common Configuration window), next and on the Remote Client Protocols window make sure you choose all the protocols your clients will use. You can add protocols ALSO. Next comes IP Address Assignment window. If your IP addresses are assigned by DHCP or manlually. And if you have more than one RAS Server you can set up RADIUS to control them centrally. If not choose No, I don't want to set up RADIUS now...Click Finish to finish...
Then you need to go Active Users and Computers and allow the user Remote Access...and go to the client computer and configure there too...
Settings--Network and Dial Up Connections--Make New Connection--Dial Up to Private Network--Phone Number to Dial (ENTER the phone number to which RAS Server Modem connected)--Next--next...Here a client is Win2K.

Log in as ADMINISTRATOR to perform all above...
Some steps SKIPPED as you can choose for your option...

Solve : Windows 2000 Professional Problems... Help needed.?

I have encountered quite a number of problems with this Operating System.

Sometime I will get this during the logon screen:

"Logon MESSAGE
The system cannot log you on due to the following error:
The network request is not supported.
Please try again or consult your systme administrator."

I tried logging in using both the administrator and username account but failed(not due to WRONG password).

I don't understand what it is implying. For you info, I have no problem booting in safe mode.

If I logon sucessfully, I will encounter another problems.

I will get this message pop up out of nowhere whenever I use the computer.

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/5672/service2gq.jpg

or

Then there's another problem, which is this:

My TIME setting and REGION setting is set according to my timezone and it's accurate as it is, but it still give me this error. I followed the instructions but it doesn't help.

How do I solve all of this problems?

Every now and then, there's virus popping. I deleted it, yet it still pop up.You have to boot to safe mode and delete it. What are you using?I switched back to windows 98 again. okay well here we go i tried to reformatt this pc that had win 98 on it all went well until ! it restarted and now i am getting the blue screen of death saying that 000007bdll\??\c:\windows\system32\sfcfiles.dll is not a valid windows image and i have to disable bios CACHE and memory shadowing ? help! i do have the win 2000 emergency disk and back UPS but i dont want to continue without some advice . can anyone help please! :-/I am not CLEAR on this. The machine had Win 98 but you are trying to install Windows 2000. Is that a shiny legal Windows CD? Is it an upgrade version?

In any case, you can boot from the Win2000 CD and delete all partitions and recreate them to install to. If an upgrade the install will ask you to briedly insert the Win98 CD.Quote

hello thanks for the reply and yes its a legal win 2000 proffessional cd , uh, microsoft says you get this message when your cd is scratched but i had it professionally repaired and it still will not go past the win 2000 start up menu. i have done everything it will let me into the bios , and of course win 2000 options but wont even start in safe mode , i am stumped. after the STOP message it says if problem continues disable , or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable bios memory , options such as caching or shadowing or go to safe mode. I dont know i cant figure it out ive tried everything like i said and no luck , hoping someone had this error before. P.S. yes i just put win 2000 in and said i wanted to upgrade it went through all the proceedures on last start up it went to the stop message? thanks leanne. So you are booting from the CD or just inserting it after the machine is running?

Can you make a copy of the CD for installation purposes? I would try that next.

You can also copy the files from i386 folder to the hard drive after FORMATTING and start from there, but this should not be necessary.

How Can You Transfer Your Database Over To Another Drive And Get It Linked Properly?

And Or Hide Critical ASP Files Inside A WebRoot Directory? So That Way They Can't Be Accessed Via Internet.

Anyway Possible?

Thanks In Advance!

PS. The Reason For This Is Due To A Certain Hacker Who Won't Leave Our Forums Alone.

Yep it's definitely possible. Is this on an Apache server or a server running IIS? Is ANYONE going to have access to these files?

Not entirely sure what you mean by your first question. What kind of a database are you using?Yes We Are Running IIS......The Only Folks That Have Access To This Server Are Me And My Husband......From Our Individual PC's Here At Home As WELL As From Work.
But We Ran Into A Problem YESTERDAY Were Someone Got Into The Database Somehow And Started Deleteing asp Files. My Husbands Forum Got Hacked As Well As Mine. They Tend To Mess With His More Than Mine Though. And It's Someone From Overseas..UGHHHH

We Are Wanting To Hide The Database So That Way They Can't Find It Like To Another Drive...Was Told This Was Possible But Hubby Tried It LASTNIGHT And Couldn't Get It To Work Right.

Or Is There Another Way To Do This(Such As Settings)..We Are Behind A Router Also.

Hope This Helps If Not I Will Try To Answer Ur Questions As Best As I Can..

Thanks In Advance,
StephYes we can do something about this but again: what kind of a database are you using? MSSQL? MySQL? PosatgresSQL? Oracle? Sybase? Text file? Excel file? MS Access DB?MS Access DB......Yuck.

Okay, you definitely don't want the database sitting anywhere in your webroot tree. That way, anyone can open it in a browser unless you deny access to the IUSR_*** account. You should be able to PLONK the .mdb file anywhere you like, and then reference it in your ASP scripts by its absolute path (e.g. C:\safefolder\database.mdb). Unfortunately I'm not an ASP programmer, so I can't provide a code snippet.

Consider investigating MySQL and transferring your database to that. You will achieve a massive increase in performance, security and stability.

Solve : OE Express "From" field text is invisible?

Answer»

Recently, the text in the "from" column in Outlook Express (being used as a newsreader only, not an email client) has become invisible when logged ONTO my domain (when logged on to the local server this is not an ISSUE). I need to know how to restore the text to it's original color (black on white). I am assuming that the fix will be a registry modification since I have reviewed every possible option that is configurable via the OE GUI.

Why would the thread subject, date, and other column information remain visible while "from" is invisible?

OS: Windows Advanced Server 2000 SP4 running TERMINAL services (problem exists both in a terminal service session as well as when logged onto the console.)
System: AMD Sempron 3100+ w/768MB DDR/160GB UDMA

Solve : domain or workgroup?

Answer»

why is it in windows 2000 if you have a domain set up and you CHANGE it to a workgroup you kill the os basically?? I'm serious cause I tried safe mode and safe mode with networking nothing i just want some help to understand what happened in this instance so that i dont repeat it.I don't know what are you talking about. I haven't had this PROBLEM.If you want to understand we r not going to explain sos
Google
YEah viking i dont what he is talking about :-?OK let me explain in windows 2000 you can be part of a domain and if you changed it to be a part of a workgroup you lose your username and password and so in order to correct it you have reinstall the os so it basically kills the os and i want some understanding of why it happens like that. generally you will only encounter this problem if you try to do file and print sharing. Is the computer actually part of a domain? If so then yes taking it out of the domain would get rid of the domain user name and password. In that case you would have to use a local username and password. Like the administrator account. You may also have to change it to log into the workgroup and not the domain.

To get your username and password back re-join the domain that you left. Then you should be able to log into that machine using your domain username and password.

Other than that I don't see what your problem would be.um that would be nice if using the admin log worked!!Your user configuration is stored on the Server rather than local computer. So when you return to the workgroup you get disconnected from the server and lose all the information stored on the server. In Domain you don't have much to do with local users...still doesnt explain it it sounds greek to me.Ok when you are logging in and you are at the log in screen where you put your username and password in. Look around for a second. You may have to hit the options button but there should be another place. Make sure you're logging into the workgroup. Then use the local administrator account.

If it's still set to log into the domain then it won't work.

Once you get logged in you should re-join the domain.

Re-joining the domain,
1) Right Click "My Computer" at the Windows 2000 Professional Station and select "Properties"
2) Select the Network Identification TAB and click Properties.
3) In the Member of Section shown below, click the Domain box and type in the domain you wish to join and Click OK.
4) You will be prompted to enter a user name and password from the server that has permissions to join computers to the domain. (use the servers administrator user name and password). You may be prompted to reboot the client .

like i said the admin account did not work and so i have no idea what i did wrong on that system never trust me to enable file and print sharing...even though i work for dell....although this screw up happened on my own computer...still do not trust me....recommend going to file and print sharing websites for that otherwise ill make a mess out of a computer. For leaving or joining a domain you need some advanced user rights. And at least local administrator rights. Are you a local administrator for your computer? Also, for enabling file and printer sharing you need administrator credentials (local account, local administrator for that computer).
When you leave a domain (and join a workgroup), you may only use local users accounts (users that do not need to use credentials from a server to log on). Long story... Of COURSE, if you know the account password.
It is your home computer? Or it is a work computer? If it is from work, talk with the network administrator (he will tell you some nasty things, he will reproach you...), he should be able to solve your problem.

Solve : virtual memory?

Answer»

I'm running windows 2000, and when I start up the computer there is a pop-up that says i dnot have any virtual memory left. i hit the ok button and then it tells me it wants to shut down. If i let it shut down it starts up on its owna nd does the exact same thing.
I tried closing COME applications from the task manager, becuase it was all i could get to. Once i closed some appications the desktop icons appeared and i could open some programs although it was running very slowly.
I ran norton windoctor, and it said there was a program missing "dotnetinstaller". I tried to run the virus scanner it it wouldnt, it said pieces of norton where missing and i had to uninstall norton and reinstall it, but i do not have a cd for norton. I downlaoded a 15 day trial version but it wouldnt let me install it..

I did everything i could but it still says i have no virtural memory and wants ot shut down. PLEASE help me asap! how can i get everything back and running again? whats wrong?sounds like a norton problem...did you use speed disk..more info on norton...is it nav or nsw...uninstall norton system works either with the uninstall it came with or the add/remove in the control panel... norton may have exceed the vm ... if you download system mechanic this >http://www.iolo.com its should sort it... thirty-day trialware..Dotnet is a Trojan. You should download AVG Free Edition anti-virus and uninstall Norton which uses a lot of system resources. You can also use Zone Alarm Free Firewall as I do on XP Pro.

If you download SpyBot SD, AdAware SE and SPYWAREBLASTER you should be able to keep your system clean and remove DOTNET.

Most of us use all three programs.

Problems with virual memory ... might ... be caused by faulty or badly seated RAM modules. Virtual memory mimicks RAM and if the RAM is faulty then you will need a lot of virtual memory.

How much RAM do you have? XP Professional machines often have provision for 4 x 1024 RAM modules and you need at least 256Mb to run WELL. 512Mb is better and 1024Mb better still.Rachael, you can also try a rescue set of up-to-date Anti-Virus floppy diskettes from another machine.

Boot to these rescue DISKS and run a virus check from the A: drive.follow thwe following step to increase ur virtual memory :

1. right on ur 'my computer'

2. Click on advanced tab

3. on performance column click setting

4. click advanced tab

5. on virtual memory column click setting

6. then se tup new virtual memory by increasing the virtual memory value according to what that showed above column... just put it there..Ummmmm, this thread is 5 months old. Ummmmm, this thread is 17 months old. It'll soon be its second birthday.

Solve : CD-RW won't write?

Answer»

Hi,

I hope I'm posting in the right place here. I just installed a Samsung CD-RW Drive on my Windows 2000 Server SYSTEM (SP4). The drive has the label Compact Disc ReWritable on the front panel, if it matters to anyone.

The drive reads CDs just fine, but it can't write to a CD-R disk with label Compact Disc Recordable on the front panel (I don't have any other discs to try). For example, if I paste an ITEM from my hard drive onto the CD icon in Windows Explorer, then the message reads: D:\ is not accessible. Incorrect Function.

The Windows Device Manager indicates that 'This device is working properly', so I don't think that this is a hardware problem.

And I'm not convinced that I need burning software like Nero. Isn't there a function within Windows 2000 that can format CDs so they can be burned? And can't I then just drag and drop items onto the CD drive letter?

In any case, no software came with this drive.

I know the error message above is a common problem for some reason, but I've only seen solutions for Windows XP. Does anyone have any ideas about how to fix it in Windows 2000?

Thanks for any suggestions!

P.G.It will read OK but you'll need some sort of software to be able to BURN anything. I use NERO on XP and use the native XP drag and drop to burn files to CD instead of using NERO's InCD.

You could try DeepBurner which has a freeware version.

FREEWAREThanks for the reply!

When I bought the drive, the (preoccupied with listening to music) SALES kid insisted that I don't need any kind of software to burn CDs. I kind of knew that it wouldn't work without it, but I hadn't done any tech work on my PCs in years, so I believed him. Plus, he was the only one in the store.

So I went back today and spoke with another guy. He gave me the Nero disc that was supposed to accompany the drive. I spent so much time this weekend trying to figure out why it didn't work. Now I know.

Thanks for the DeepBurner advice. My next step would've been to get some freeware to solve this.Quote

start/run/sfc and click OK. Select extract one file from disk. Insert windows CD. Click start. Do for each file. It's only one problem more I forgot to mention, in my Gateway 2000, my CD-ROM for the win98 files is not being recognized, I would appreciate help to solve that problem. How can I get Windows 98 to recognize my D: drive?
I already checked the BIOS and it does not have a D: drive is there a way to upgrade the BIOS? when I insert the Win98 Startup disk the drive is recognized and I have run setup from it. After running setup I cannot reach anymore. helpIf it is not recognized in the BIOS and you have not been monkeying around inside the case I would say it is most likely deceased. You could try reattaching the cable and power plug, but if that doesn't get it, I would buy another. They are really cheap. I suspect that is the originalone with that machine, so that makes it 5+ yhears old? You can try another drive in there just to confirm where the problem is.

If it were me, I would remedy the CDROM and then reinstall Windows, but the other way may work for you. Let us know. Bless your heart, such a bearer of good news you are! I was hoping for some kind of solution for my poor old drive, I know it still lives, otherwise it wouldn't run my Wind98 setup cd. BTW does it need a card? I think something is not connected right, I'll try momking around it for sure and see what happens ( it is my learning PC). Seriously, thanks for your suggestion.I think it bears to mention that my troubles with the cdrom drive started when I formated the c: drive and got rid of windows 3.11 to install wind98 instead. I have nothing but troubles SINCE. I've been doing all of this because I want to plug in my dsl to this gateway 2000 with the maximum memory i could install 4x72 simms sticks and 405mg hd. windows is taking half of the drive, but now it wont let me install any of the drivers i need for my isa card and my cdrom and a couple other pnp that i don't need but they cause me PROBLEMS. Every time I try to install the right drivers i get the blue screen of death. All i want is to get to the internet from the gateway computer while my main computer is in the shop.any help for me? i'm broke and i'cant buy a stick of gum! It depends largely on how the CD is connected. Is it connected to an onboard IDE port or is it connected via an IDE addon card?
If it's the former, then you need to set the BIOS to recognise that there's a CD unit on (Hopefully!) IDE 2.
If it's the latter, you'll need a driver for the add on card.

You'll find a self extracting bootdisk here that will load real mode CD and mouse drivers among other things. Download it, extract it and run the executale with a diskette in the drive.
Once the diskette has been created, boot from it. Read the screen output and tell us if your CD appears at drive letter V.

Solve : Local Group Policy?

Has anyone ever copied a local GROUP POLICY from one PC to ANOTHER on Windows 2000? AD is not an option at this moment...

I got a Windows 2000 computer from a garage sale, and I think it is set to system restore whenever I log out. I wan't to disable this so I can save files to the computer, and not have them disappear next time I log on.

This is may not be system restore because I don't use system restore or know exactly what it is.
If this is ANOTHER setting please offer your assistance then too.

Thanks for the help guys. I don't BELIEVE Win2000 has system restore.

Are you able to log on as administrator?

Any used computer should be formatted and Windows reinstalled to remove the previous owner's baggage. I don't suppose you got a Windows CD with this? No, but all I know is that when I save things to the local disk, and log off they aren't there the next time.

If I connect to a network drive and save stuff there it is safe.

Thanks Quote

I'll have to go check not sure what kind of account I'm using.

No, I don't have the CD. :-/

None of his own stuff is anywhere on the computer so he must have loaded it himself or done a good job cleaning up.

So if you make a new folder on the C drive called "Stuff" and put some file in there neither the file NOR the folder is visible?

YES, and it's not just hidden I tryed to install a game on it, and after I logged off I guess it was deleted.

Is it POSSIBLE to put read only on an entire drive?
If a boot drive was read only the system probably wouldn't even boot. Your description SOUNDS like something like Ghost is running at startup and reimaging the drive but I somehow very much doubt that!
Does a HijackThis log throw any light on the situation?

Solve : Windows2000/No Boot Up?

Answer»

A little while AGO, I bought a barebones kit from TigerDirect (the Manufacturer is Wintergreen SYS). A few months later, I SMELLED smoke coming from the back of the computer and then the monitor turned itself off. The power still comes on when I turn the computer on. The CD drives still have power, but not my floppy drive. The Power and Activity lights still come on, but no visual on my monitor. No POST either. I have sent the Motherboard and Video Card back the following to their manufacturers since then, and when I got replacement PARTS, the computer was still doing the same thing. I tried switching the power supply and had my memory tested at a local repair shop, but I still have no visual on my monitor. My monitor works fine when I hook a different computer up to it, so I don't think that's the problem. If anyone here has any ideas of what could be wrong, please let me know.

Thanks in Advance,
Neo1134You may want to take the whole machine to the shop. It sounds like several potential problem areas.

How about booting with just the CPU/FAN Mobo, RAM and video? Does anything happen? Any beep codes? Are there any jumpers that need to be set on the mobo?

When you rebuilt the machine the floppy drive still did not have power? You made it sound like an identical problem.Smoke cming from a machine does not sound good. Have you any idea where it was coming from?
Strip the machine down and connect only a keyboard, a known good graphics card (PCI preferably) and one known good stick of memory. Before switching on, reset the BIOS via the CMOS jumper.
If it boots now, add one item at a time starting with more memory, graphics card, floppy drive, hard drive, CD etc until it fails. If and when it does, you've either found your BAD component or overloaded your PSU.Hmm... ok guys. I am going to give it to a computer repair place. I've tried everything that I and several other people could think of but nothing has worked.

Thank You For Your Assistance,

When exactly did this problem start? Did you do anything immediately prior to it occurring?start/run/msinfo32

Solve : Quick System Folder question...?

Is Windows XP and NT operating system?
What exactly is NT, and what does it mean?
Windows 2000 NT

Question: Why is it in some XP installs the system directory is called C:\WINDOWS and in others C:\WINNT

What causes the difference? :-?Windows XP is based on NT technology and was originally known as NT5.
The WinNT folder usually occurs in WinXP after an upgrade from Win NT has been performed.Quote

after an upgrade from Win NT

An upgrade from Windows NT? What kind of upgrade? A service pack upgrade?

Please explain more for I am confused. :-/

No he means an upgrade install. If you have a Windows NT machine and boot to an XP disk you have the option to do an upgrade install. It has to be Windows NT 4.0 and it can only upgrade to Windows XP PROFESSIONAL, not Windows XP Home. Windows NT 3.51 or lower cannot upgrade to XP.

NT stands for New Technology. Along with that came NTFS, which stands for New Technology File System. My dad has a laptop (from the university) with Windows XP it's system directory is C:\WINNT does that mean that it was booted from a previous Windows NT OS?

Windows XP can still USE fat or fat32 file systems too right? You may change system folder name during installation.
Quote
Windows XP can still use fat or fat32 file systems too right?

Right.Windows XP is intended to be the marriage of the home OS (9x) and the business OS (NT). The unmitigated disaster that was WinME was the supposed forerunner of XP which feigned non dependence on MSDOS by attempting to HIDE it.
The big difference between XP and the 9x series is that it is entirely NT based - ie MSDOS is not present.Quote

When you boot to the command line through safe mode are you using cmd.exe?Command launches a DOS emulator, which is why there are so many problems running DOS programs under NT/XP.

The COMMON DOS interpreter is command.com by the way.

Solve : Multitude of problems....BIOS/Windows/Harddrive?

Answer»

Things never are as easy as it is planned. I bought a Maxtor 200gb harddrive and was gonna start with a fresh install of XP Pro. So i hooked the only the new harddrive and ran the software to format and partition it. Well it said to first GO into the BIOS and check to see if it recognizes the harddrive first. Did that and exited the BIOS. After the harddrive was formatted and partitioned, i restarted the computer and it goes to the blue banner screen for Dynamic Drive Overlay and states to "press spacebar to boot from diskette or press C to bot from CD-ROM." Well a 1/2 second after that is displayed i get a Disk Read Error and to hit control alt delete to restart the computer.

Well crap, so something is up with the new drive or the software. May i mention the software frequently locks up before i get it to format. It took me about 8 times before i could get through it all the way. Anyhoo, so i figure i'll take out the new harddrive and put my old one back in and do a file swap from one harddrive to another and then just reinstall windows. Well with only my old harddrive in, it will give me the black XP screen with the bar going back and forth, and then goes to the blue screen with the small Windows XP icon. Normally it would load windows from there and then go to the login screen. Instead it is hanging up at the blue screen. I've let it sit for 20 minutes and it still stays on that blue screen.

The computer i am working on is an old HP XT953 with a P3 1.0GHz and was originally Windows ME. I had upgraded to Windows XP Pro SP2 and that is what is on my old harddrive now. When i go into the BIOS, it gives me three options for the types of windows in a drop down box. One option is "Other", the next option is "Win 95", and the last option is "Win 98/2000". I've had it on all three types and it still hangs up. The BIOS i have on the computer is a PhoenixBIOS Core Version 4.06 BIOS Revision 2.10 05/08/01. All i want to figure out is how i can go back into windows. I've tried going into Safe Mode, using the last known good configuration, i've tried them all and they all get stuck at the same spot. Please help me! If you need any more info let me know. For some reason i can't get my bootdisks to work either on this computer and it says that windows was unable to format the disk. When it rains it pours!

I've also loaded Default Settings in the BIOS and still won't go into windows. Running out of options hereUsing overlay software is to be avoided if at all possible! Remove it now and forget Windows for the moment, let's get the hardware sorted out first.
Does the BIOS actually see the drive and does it REPORT it's full size?Quote

Overlay software as in the DDO? The bios read the drive ok without me doing anything to it. It only recognizes the 137gb instead of the 200gb, which i have read that if i am installing XP SP1 or later that it will recognize it. I partitioned the drive into 3, one at 100gb and two at 50GB. I'll try reading up on removing the DDO.Quote

It is the MaxBlast 4 software that came with the Maxtor CD. The DDO software installs itself if the BIOS is older and won't recognize the full harddrive capacity.Buening:

Backdated is correct. Have you checked the documentation for the motherboard to see if it supports hard drives as large as 200 GB? Many Windows Me systems shipped with hard drives smaller than 10 GB. Have you checked the Web site of the motherboard manufacturer to see if there is a flash upgrade for the BIOS?

DocWell here is the funny thing. I have the updated BIOS and the computer originally came with a 40GB harddrive. A few months after i got the computer i added a 160Gb slave for all my games and files. That one installed in a cinch and i partitioned it into 4 separate 40gb drives. I'm not a guru with computers so please correct me if my assumtions are wrong, but if you partition the harddrive into smaller drives that are less than the 137Gb it really doesn't matter if the BIOS is able to handle larger drives. Is this correct? At first, i tried using the Maxblast software in DOS cause i wanted the 200gb drive to be my bootdrive. Well it kept giving me a disk read error, so i hooked up my 40gb boot disk along with the 200gb and booted up windows. When i got into windows and ran the software, it would only allow me to transfer all the files from my 40 to my 200 but i wanted a clean install of windows. The drive partitions showed up in My Computer. While i was in windows, a warning window popped up and said that the system is not setup for drives larger than 137gb and if i wanted it to turn on those settings. It said it had to adjust the Registry and the screen blanked and restarted windows. Well since then i am not able to get back into windows and this is scaring me. I had most of my files backed up, but there are a few files on my desktop that i would like to save. Is there any way i could get into my old harddrive to retrieve some files? Reinstalling windows on that drive would delete the files in My Documents and the Desktop.

I'm getting a set of boot disks for XP Pro TODAY at work. My previous set gave me an error on disc 4 saying a file was corrupt. I'm trying to install windows on yet another drive, 80gb (yeah i'm getting desparate to get into windows here). As far as the 200gb, i put in a bootable Win ME cd and it goes through the initial setup and then aborts the install saying that the harddrive wasn't found. It said that either the cables aren't hooked up or the drive wasn't initialized and that i need to run FDisk. I don't feel comfortable enough with FDisk to know what i'm doing.

One other note. I removed the DDO from the 200gb and when i restart the computer it goes to a black DOS screen and says Disc Read Error. It doesn't check the disc drive or CD drive or nothing. I'm thinking i may have a defective drive.

If anyone could help me get back into my old harddrive i would appreciate it!!!! I tried going into safe mode, and even reverting back to a known good configuration and nothing works.

I'm not sure if i can get a BIOS upgrade from the mobo manufacturer cause it is an HP computer. Since it isn't a retail mobo, the only updates i can get are through HP and they haven't had an upgrade in a few years. It does have the upgraded BIOS though. In the BIOS, it recognizes the harddrive and states that it is 137gb and not the 200gb.The bottom line is that you'll need a hard drive equal to or smaller than the BIOS limitation size for this computer to reliably operate.
You could try the overlay software again but it's definitely not to be recommended.Quote

Does it matter if that harddrive is partitioned into drives smaller than the 137gb barrier? Or does the bios recognize the hardrive as its full size regardless of how many partitions it has? Thanks for the help everyone!

Solve : Help with Templates in Outlook (Add Margins)?

Answer»

Hello,

I have a question about the Stationary or templates in Microsoft Outlook.

I would like to use the template in the picture.

Tool -> Options -> Mail Format -> Stationary Picker -> Glacier

The Problem when choosing that stationary is that it automatically adds an extra line after each time you hit enter…. So that the signature has line breaks between each line!

To try and counter this problem I created a new Stationary with a blank Document and choose the Background for Glacier. This worked for getting rid of the Extra Line break after each time you hit enter. But Now every new email starts with no left margin. The text starts at zero on the ruler rather than .5 where it should start to avoid TYPING over the darker color in the Glacier Background.

So, I don’t know how to fix this, I’m open to all ideas. I don’t see a place to add a margin to the stationary. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Thanks

Patrick
[emailprotected]

Have you tried just dragging the Left Indent bar on the ruler to the right? That should do it.That will work for a single email, but I have to do that Everytime.

And Even If I do that, if a Person replies to my email, their text goes back to not having a Margin.

Well, I can't relate to your preception of this as a problem. I'm sure the template was designed on the premise that the typing to the far left would be on top of the darker background. Seems to me it's still quite readable.

I really don't know of any other solution right now.Quote

Sorry I didn't make it clear.

Under the factory template "Glacier" the emails are set up with a Margin so that the text does not overlap the darker stripes. But the factory template also has the stupid double spacing. I created the "Glacier 2" template to get rid of the double spacing, but I don't know how to add the margin.Hmmm, I'm unable to duplicate the behavior you describe for the default/factory template; mine does not double space when I hit Enter.

I'm using Outlook 2003. I just added that template after reading your post. When I did so, my system asked me to insert my FrontPage 2000 CD. So, perhaps my system is not setup the same way as yours. To insert the Glacier background, I actually insert a THEME, not a Background. Both are on the Format menu.

I have no idea why my system installed this Theme from my FrontPage 2000 CD instead of asking for the Office 2003 CD. But, my Glacier Theme looks identical to yours.

I guess this really doesn't help you. Hope someone else has a suggestion.Hmm... I'm on Outlook 2003 also ... I think that is the latest, New computer at the office.

I described the process I did to get to "Stationary" in my first post. You don't create a new message first.

If I create a new message and select theme, I don't have Glacier listed as an option.

This isn't really a problem, there are a COUPLE of those themes I'd rather have.

But I don't see any options to get those themes to apply for Every New message and not just a single message.

Is that possible?Go to TOOLS, Options, Mail Format, and select the stationery you want under Stationery and Fonts, in the box labeled "Use this stationery by default:".I get a completely seperate list for Themes and Stationary...

It sounds like you get one list for Themes and Stationary..

The only stationary in that list that I like is Glacier, and that is how I came to my first post.

Is there a way to get my themes into my stationary list. No, I have many more themes than stationery; over 80 themes, about 24 stationeries. I don't know of way to get themes added to your choice of stationery. If I learn of a way to do that, I'll let you know. I'd also like to know.4jacks, I have an idea. Send me a private message by clicking on the PM button here in the forum. I'll email you the file to add Glacier to your stationery. You simply need to copy it into the folder where your Stationery is stored. On my system, I found them at F:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Stationery. My OS is installed on F:\; change that as needed for your system. Let me know if interested.

Also, here's a reference with some info on creating new stationery: http://faculty.eicc.edu/golson/outlook/#stationery. This came from a Google search.Sent you a PM!

I currently have Glacier in my Stationary, just not my Themes..

I'll try the file though, maybe your Glacier, doesn't have the stupid double spaces.

Thanks.stinks, I don't have permission to save in that folder :-?

It's already in there though, same files, so I'm not sure if it will get rid of the double spacing.I believe you could copy my files into some other folder and then tell Outlook where the files are. If you open Stationery Picker (from Tools, Options, Mail Format), click on New, select "Use this file as a template:" and then Browse to the location of the file, that should work. I don't think stationery has to be in the standard folder that holds the usual stationery. You might want to change the name to Glacier2 or such.

Apparently, you don't have administrative RIGHTS on that computer. Is that right? If so, perhaps it won't let you browse to a different folder as described above.

Solve : MS Outlook forwarding problems?

Hi,

We have a machine on our network that is USING MS Outlook 2000 as it's email interface. The issue is that we can't forward any emails from the Inbox without them disappearing into thin air.

Although the email reaches it's destination the email is removed from the Inbox. I have checked the other folders and also the rules but I can't seem to fathom what is happening.

If anyone has any ideas then your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks. If it's actually reaching your inbox then it's doubtful that it's a rule as most rules come into effect before that stage. What happens immediately prior to it's "disappearance"?Sorry I don't think I made myself clear..

If I TRY to foward a email from my Inbox to a colleague, the orginal email that was sitting in my inbox disappears.

The email should register in the sent box and it should also remain in my inbox.

I hope this is clear.Sorry for the confusion - It's one of those days!
I suspect a rule at work here, something LIKE delete on forward. Does the message appear in the deleted folder?Quote

Go to Tools, Options, Preferences tab, E-mail Options (button) and see what boxes you have checked there. I'm not sure which settings AFFECT this. Also, I'm using Outlook 2003, so there may be differences. My guess is you have a check mark in "Close original message on reply or forward" and you do not have a check mark in "Save copies of messages in Sent Items folder". Or, you need to go to the NEXT screen by clicking on Advanced E-mail Options (button) and check your settings there under Save messages.
You might want to check your View settings as well. Current View should be set to Messages. Not sure though but are you using rules?
At an rate you could make a copy of the emails before forwarding as a temp fix.

Solve : Outlook 2000- can't find personal folders or pab?

Answer»

I recently upgraded to a new XP system. I mounted my old hard drive on new system and COPIED Documents and Settings to new drive. Outlook doesn't see my old personal folders (pst), my ADDRESS book (PAB) or my JUNKMAIL filters(rwz). Where should the files be located so that Outlook can see them. Can you open up Outlook at all?

If so go to File..Open..Personal Folders File... Then navigate to wherever the PST file is stored
(I think the default is something like C:\Documents And Settings\UserName\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook or C:\Documents And Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook (your PAB file and rules is probably there to).

If you can't get into outlook try copying the files from your old drive to the locations above and then opening your outlook

Replace "UserName" with your user login name.

Hope this helps,

Brad D.You must be able to view Hidden Files and Folders to access the Local Settings folder to get these items through Explorer.

From a Command Promtpt at the root of the drive to recover from:
dir *.pst /s
This will show you where all PST files are that are available to you. If you were previously using NTFS you may have to reset permissions to get to that infomartion.

Winnt/System32/config/system

Select "r" at the first screen to repair"

I have put the CD in and nothing happens?

Does anyone have any IDEAS, thanks!

Did you try to repair using the CD like it INSTRUCTED? You said you put the CD in, but my question is what you did once inserting it.

FlameI didnt do anything with the CD. It didnt do anything when we inserted it.If it actually is a BOOTABLE CD, you need to set the BIOS boot order to boot from CD before hard drive. Preferably, it should be set to Floppy, CDROM, 1st hard drive.
If it isn't a bootable CD, make the WIN2K boodisk set from the CD and use those.

Of course it must be. Even 2000 would be faster. What about RAM? You have not enough CPU speed ofr XP. And you must have at least 256Mb Ram to work with. I have XP with 128 MB Ram but it works on the 1.5 GHz CPU. I think the better way of increasing your system to upgrade it to possible level.
And plus REMOVE some of the programs above. You have too many ANTIMALWARE installed, which drastically reduces your speed. On the forums there are recommennded ONES for you. Others are not necessary.uhhhhhh that many antimalware programs are unneccesary and ALSO the older versions of windows (9x, 3.x) are faster since they are made for slower machines and there are much less processes running at the same time as on XPPersonall, I would dump his lot:
Registry Mechanic 5, System Mechanic 6, Easycleaner, Hdcleaner, Tweaknow Regcleaner pro, Winpatrol and Secretmaker.

This lot is not so much a recipe for disaster, but an all out nuking waiting to happen.

Solve : Can't login to Win2000 Pro?

Answer»

Hi,
I was having trouble launching and editing application setings in Win 2000 PRO, so I edited local security policy settings for the OS (I allowed all FEATURES to be allowed for the ADMINSTRATOR). When the computer restarted, I get the following massage:

"The local policy of this system does not permit you to logon interactively."

On top of that, I can't login with my old password.

So I'm basicaly stuck at the login PROMPT. And I am supposed to be the administrator!

Any and all help is welcome, thanks in advance.budbud83.....Have you tried rebooting into safe mode ?
What changes did you actualy make ?

There are many password recovery or reset tools AVAILABLE such as the ones here. NT isn't that secure!
