Solve : win7hard drive in a win8 laptop is it possible??

Answer»

"I have a samsung laptop that RUNS in windows7, I performed a clean format with it but unfortunately it goes out so bad, that I't would'nt boot my win7 installation cd(hoping for a 2nd TRY). so i came up with an Idea that i would insert my win7 hard drive temporarily in my win8 laptop so i can do the hard drive formatting there. But is it possible? "What does "it goes out so bad" mean? Why can't you boot to your W7 dvd?yes it can't and i got this unique error WHEREIN the problem SIGNATURE are 0.0.0.0/unknownIf I understand what your asking, the answer is yes, you can connect the Win 7 hard drive to the Win 8 computer and format it.  However, I don't think that's what you really want to do.  You wish to re-install Win 7 on that hard drive and you can't do that while it's attached to the Win 8 computer.

You need to figure out why you can't boot from the Win 7 install dvd.  How old is the Win 7 computer?  If it's new enough, you may need to go into the BIOS settings to disable Secure Boot.  You also need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that it first tries to boot from the dvd drive.  Where did you get the Win 7 install dvd, is it SOMETHING you downloaded off some obscure website or is it a genuine dvd that you are confident is good?  Can you boot that dvd on another machine? Please start at the beginning. EXACTLY what happens when you try to boot to the W7 dvd?

Is there an option to disable a floppy drive from the bios? If you don't have a floppy drive present, there might be an option in the bios to enable or disable the drive.

Disable the floppy drive and then save the settings.

Solve : After start up, screen goes directly to "This program cannot display the webpage?

Answer»

After windows 7 start up, the SCREEN goes directly to "This program cannot display the webpage."  When it goes to this screen the computer LOCKS up and nothing can be do, but moving the pointer.  I REBOOT in safe mode and same results.  However, after a moment the computer goes into sleep mode, and once I wakes it up, I do have limited function until it returns to that same screen with same results. It would help if you could post a screenshot or two REGARDING your issue.

So after windows starts up, the windows desktop says "This program cannot display the webpage or
after windows starts up, your browser says "This program cannot display the webpage?

Your errors are all over the place. Multiple and varied BSOD's typically indicate one of two things: a significant hardware PROBLEM or malware. Please do the following as preliminary testing:

1) Please run full scans with BOTH your installed anti virus app AND with MalwareBytes.

2) Please check your ram. To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.Memory and Hard drive both checked out ok. Theres no virus. For this is a clean reinstall of windows. Not sure what to go on nowYou need to let memtest run several hours - EVEN overnight if possible. If it checks out, and if you are certain there is no malware, my next thought is the motherboard.Just to ADD to what was already suggested, the last BSOD points to your video card/chip (dxgmms1.sys). Bugcheck code 0x119
http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x00000119

If you happen to have onboard video and is using a graphics card currently, remove the card and use the motherboard video itself then check the difference.Sorry to disagree jason, but the errors point to EVERYTHING - including the ACPI driver. It's almost certainly malware or the motherboard.Another condition that produces very random BSOD's is a flakey PSU...

Solve : Need help!! Vista 32 home premium wont boot?

Answer»

Desperately seeking help. I have a laptop with Windows Vista on it. Im trying to get to the recovery console to repair an endless boot failure -LOOP. The blue screen error  i received when i chose do not reboot from windows advanced boot options screen is unmountable_boot_volume. When i try to boot into safe mode it just stops loading files and nothing else  happens. Last know good config does not work either. Ive set the boot order in bios to cd/dvd first to boot from a vista system recovery disk. Upon restart i press a key to boot from cd rom as message indicates. I get a white loader bar which says loading windows files, when that completes i get a greenish/yellow loader bar that says microsoft. After 1 MIN or so that disappears and im staring at a black screen that goes no further. I thought maybe i needed a different recovery disk, so a friend of mine sent me an iso  of windows vista. I attempted to boot from this dvd i created successfully with windows disc image burner , and the same thing happens as listed above. Any help is greatly appreciated. ThanksIt might be getting hung because the hard drive is sick... do you have a spare hard drive to swap into it? Then boot off of the disc and try to install to this other healthy hard drive? I had a Dell that did exactly what you are explaining for problem with a 40GB IDE HDD. I swapped out the 40GB HDD with a 12GB that I had laying around that was a good drive, but smaller and then i was able to install Windows with no problems, although not much HDD space on a 12GB drive after windows is fully patched.Dave,
Thanks for your reply. No such luck with an extra laptop hardrive laying around. Im pretty sure the boot cd/dvd should still get to the windows startup/install screen even if it were the hard drive. I used a few diagnostic programs while running  Hirens boot cd, in which they show the hard drive having 232 of 250 gb remaining. I ran memtest to test the memory, and no errors were found. Any SUGGESTIONS from anybody on where to go next to get this repair disc to boot all the way up so i can do a repair?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555302Thanks Allan. Problem is I can not get to command prompt with or without USING a recovery or installation disc. Also, when attempting to LOAD safe mode, or safe mode with command prompt from windows advanced boot options, it loads some of the files and freezes about 20 seconds into it.... Ive done repairs before from a recovery disc with xp, but this is my first go around with vista. Itit wont go any further beyond loading windows files, and then hangs when booting from the cd/dvd?Link to the .iso ? ?

Very may well be why it didn't work...I suggest you run a diagnostic on the hard drive.

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=28744&hl=hard+drive+diagnostic)
Make sure you select the tool which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnosticThanks for your reply,
https://www.copy.com/s/8odLQ0g4QLBApgyx/Windows%20Vista%20Home%20Premium%20SP2%20(32%20Bit).iso
Ive also attempted with a vista 32 and 64 bit recovery cd i purchased off of ebay. And  last but not least ive attempted the one built into Hirens bootcd, all 3 give me the same result as previously mentioned. Allan, thats where the problem comes in. Im not sure of the brand of hd as its a lap top and Ive yet to take it apart. That is my next step if thats the direction it leads me.You can try SeaTools for DOS and DataLifeguard for DOS and see if either of those work. BTW, removing the cover from the hd drive on a laptop should take you about 30 seconds.Okay, my apology as I have little experience with laptops and the hardware layout. I though if I removed the bottom than pieces would go everywhere, making it a nightmare to put back together. No apology necessary - not an issue.Patio did you find anything wrong with the iso? Quote from: brc3404 on October 09, 2014, 03:08:54 PM

Patio did you find anything wrong with the iso?

Yes...i wouldn't trust it...Its from an IT guy I used to work with. Its not from a torrent. Why do you say you wouldnt trust it?

Solve : Unable to choose default program for file type?

Answer»

I downloaded an application to play .mid files, and unpacked the zip file into a subfolder of Program Files.  (The application is quite an old one, and doesn't have an installer.)  It works fine.

Now I want to make this application my default player for .mid files.  When I follow the usual methods, I can browse to the application's .exe file, but when I click the "Open" button, the application I have selected is ignored and I am offered Windows Media Player as default instead.

I have found that I can make the new application default by copying its .exe to my desktop, and performing the procedure on that copy.  But I'd rather not do that if I could understand what is preventing the application being used as default from where I have put it.

I tried adding the subfolder of Program Files to my Path, but that makes no difference, even after restarting Vista.  Any ideas please? Not sure if this will HELP you or not since the program is stand alone exe and not a Windows installed application. But its worth a try using this method.

http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-create-new-file-type-association-in-windows-vista/How old is this app ? ?
Are you sure they don't offer a zip that includes an installer ? ?
What app is it ? ?

The above may run the app fine...but it won't work for a file extension i don't think. Quote

Yeah i dont have Vista to try this on to test for them, and without knowing what application needs file extension association, its a gamble if the info in that link would solve this.

Because the program is not installed and linked in the windows registry, I actually have doubts if this would work or not, but it would be cool if it does. Quote from: DaveLembke on October 05, 2014, 10:08:46 AM

http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/how-to-create-new-file-type-association-in-windows-vista/

Thanks, DaveLembke, but that's what I meant by "the usual methods" which I had tried.

Patio, the app is the Falcosoft SoundFont MidiPlayer at http://falcosoft.hu/softwares.html#midiplayer   It may not be so old, after all!  I see it is now on v2.5, I got v2.4.

I may just have to put up with keeping a duplicate copy of the .exe on my desktop.  (A shortcut to Program Files\... is not enough.)Here's what to try:...
Right clik a mid file...select Open With...then POINT it to that exe instead of the shortcut...
Report back with the results.Had to get into the Vista registry to FIX this.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\MidiPlayer.exe\shell\open\command contained "C:\Users\...\Desktop\MidiPlayer.exe" "%1", which I changed to "C:\Program Files\MidiPlayer2\MidiPlayer.exe" "%1" and all seems OK.

Apparently, the "usual methods" in Vista of changing the default program for a file type — several of which have been suggested in this thread — were unable to handle this situation.

Thanks to all who commented. So the above suggestion didn't work ? ? Quote from: patio on October 10, 2014, 07:42:12 AM
So the above suggestion didn't work ? ?

It didn't work.  The situation was that I was choosing a default player (MidiPlayer.exe) which was registered but in a different location (Desktop) to that I was now giving for it (Program Files\MidiPlayer2).  It seems that none of the usual Vista methods for changing a filetype's default program worked in that situation, but just refused to see the app in its new location. Most likely because it was installed to the Desktop... Quote from: patio on October 10, 2014, 08:07:36 AM
Most likely because it was installed to the Desktop...

If there had been an installer, the problem might not have arisen.  As it was, the .zip file was unpacked in Program Files\MidiPlayer and the .exe was copied from there to the desktop.  What happened after that is largely guesswork but that registry key may have been created during a successful attempt to make the desktop copy the default player, and remained when the desktop copy was deleted.  An uninstaller might have deleted the registry key as well as the .exe, and avoided the later problem when trying to make the Program Files\MidiPlayer copy into the default player.

Solve : Help with Windows 7 PC? Restricting internet downloads??

Answer»

(sorry in advance for the lengthy post but I want to make sure I cover the issue properly)
My FAMILY have a PC, it's pretty old so a while back we got it fixed, and since then we've had trouble with downloading/saving files onto the computer.

Back then we knew the people so they'd fix for some chocolate or biscuits but now NEW staff have come in and they charge a minimum of £100 so I'd like to fix it myself if that's possible.

Anyway, whenever we want to download a file, for example an attachment to an email, it comes up with a message saying the anti-virus restricted this download. This gets in the way if I have to print out payslips, forms, important documents etc. as I have to get the file via memory stick and print off that way - which is way more hassle!

They have Sophos installed, so I tried uninstalling the anti-virus to be able to download the one I have for my laptop. I uninstalled it, but still downloads were restricted (meaning the PROBLEM wasn't solved & the computer has no anti-virus!)

I have browsed the internet and changed all the internet settings a thousand different ways to what they say but it still doesn't work!
It is on every browser, we have Chrome and IE, both browsers block all downloads, but we can save images for some reason.

I thought maybe I can do a back up then restore the computer to factory settings, but only 2 options are shown: create image repair disk or restore using Windows 7 disk (or something along those lines) - which we don't have as the IT guys never gave it to us when they installed it.

I must add there's no way of contacting the guys who used to fix our PC's so going back to them isn't an option.
I will attach a pic to show you the message that shows up.

I don't know if it is a virus that's CAUSING this as I'm not familiar with the quality of Sophos, plus my family are irritatingly stupid when it comes to TECHNOLOGY so they could have got something on there by accident.

Is there any genius out there who knows what we can do?
I would really appreciate any help!

BTW a full screenshot would be more helpful...

Solve : Copying albums onto an SD card for mobile phone?

Answer»

Hey, (first time here) Got my SD CONNECTED to my PC, when I copy an album from My Music onto SD directory the album (which does take enough time for me to think it's not just copying an empty folder), the album ends up being completely empty?

When transferring it does say  "300mb left" "250mb left" etc... So it must be transferring them, surely ? :S

Please help! empty at the phone, but files present at the computer level? If this is the case then, its because the files are in a format that the phone does not recognize and so it shows none available.

My MP3 player has this issue with the menu system. I sent an album over and when to play it and nothing there, but the folder NAME is there. Looking as to why I found out that the music was in WMA format and not MP3, so I just needed to insert my CD in and tell it to create MP3 of it, and then copy it over and then all was well.

So my THOUGHTS on this issue is that the file format is not supported by the phone maybe.  It would help if the OP would tell what kind of phone his has.
Alsop, has the OP EVER got any music to play on the phone? If so, what was the format? Can he coy any music file from file from the phone to the PC? In that case he could examine the file and learn what format it uses. Some MP3 players are very fussy about the EXACT parameters of the MP3.

Solve : laptop crashing?

Answer»

Im using a HP G62 notebook, with Windows 7 HOME premium OS. the laptop has been running fine for awhile then my screen started turning blank WHITE, which i could fix my simply pressing down on my X/C keys on the keyboard, until yesterday. now the screen doesnt turn white anymore but if i play League of Legends my laptop screen will flicker then the laptop CRASHES. I can freely run anything else except league of legends now and im wondering why that is.can anybody help?any ideas
Please don't bump threads less than 24 hours old. If someone can help, they will respond. When pressing X and C keys it fixed the white display.... and then the laptop crashes playing games...

I was thinking that maybe you had a loose video cable under the keyboard and by pressing down on the keyboard which places down pressure on the keyboard interface it was causing some pressure to a partially seated or intermittent connected video cable to the main board of the laptop and that may be why your white screen corrects itself.

As far as laptop crashing while only playing games. I'd check on CPU and GPU temps when playing games. If either CPU or GPU is going above 60C then you will need to either add a cooler pad below the laptop that helps with better air flow to cool it or you may have to open it up and replace a dried up heat pad or replace a heat pipe that is non functional due to a leak in the pipe.

Speedfan is a good tool to check temps. You can start it and check the check boxes for GPU and CPU Core and have it start to log the graph mode on the one tab. Then with it running start up a game and if the game normally plays say 10 minutes or longer before crashing then HIT your windows key at around 5 minutes into the game and look at the speedfan graph and look to see where your temps climbed to while GAMING. The temps should start to drop quickly after hitting the windows key because the CPU and GPU will be less loaded down not having to handle the game graphics and so they will cool some from before the windows key was pressed.

Solve : wkufind.exe ??? at start up every time???

Answer»

Every time since the last update I turn on my computer I get this " Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes etc" This program (wkufind.exe) keeps popping up on start up, I press yes when it pops up during start up to get rid of it but it becomes annouying when it pops up during startup EVERYTIME . I am running win 7 ultimate, I think this is for microsoft word update not sure. how do I stop this? The file is from a MS app called Picture It!...if you do not use this software you can get rid of it using Add/Remove programs...
If you do use it you can turn off auto-updates by opening the app and selecting Tools/Options from the programs menu bar.I looked in the uninstall file I do not see it nor anywhere in my programs, I did a search for picture it but no file shows up    ??Is it listed under Windows components ? ?No listing in search  And nothing at all in Start/All Programs ? ?

Someone else may have attempted to install it at one time or another.I dont get it why would it ask me  on start up to install every startup is it malware? If you navigate to your Startup folder in Explorer it can safely be deleted if you do not have or want Picture It...

Another easier and safer option is to DLoad and install StartupCPL from Mike Lin.
This is a great TINY app that allows you to control what runs on startup on your PC.
After installing it will place an icon in Control PANEL called Startup.
Clik it to launch the app whenever you need it...find the file name and UNCHECK the box next to it...this will
stop this aggraviting little popup each time you start...
Note : There will be 4 or 5 Tabs on the TOP of the CPL window...you may have to check each 1 by 1...
NOTE # 2 Never uncheck any item if you do not know what it does.

Best of Luck and let us know...Thanks patio that did the job I want to thank all who replied   i am new here , i had the same problem with wknfun.exe pop ups at start up ...i have windows 8.1 ....in case anyone wants to know if you do not already ...... c drive /   programs files (x86)/   common files   /    microsoft shared /   work shared....then delete wknfun.exe    problem is over

Solve : How to transfer files between 2 computer via USB cable?

Answer»
I have 2 computers, one is DELL notebook (Windows 7), the other is SONY laptop ( Windows XP pro). Please advise how to transfer a file from the DELL's desktop to SONY's folder with a USB cable ( A to A plug). Please show the procedure. Thank you very much indeed.
JohnNo, you can' do that.
More is needed than just a modified cable. A controller is needed.Computers are USB masters. You can not tie a MASTER to a master.
Such a device is a 'smart' cable that behaves like a slave  to both computers.

The above image is from Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com Search for 'USB file transfer'
Expect to pay $15 to $25 for such a gadget.
The principal advantages of USB are:
 Faster than most Wi-Fi devices.
Easy setup and easy to use.
 No security issues.

Also such devices are found other places. Like Cables to go.
http://www.cablestogo.com/
Or try New-egg.

My point is that you can not build one. You buy it.

A crossover ethernet cable would be way cheaper...It would be cheaper to use a USB memory stick. You don't even need a crossover cable anymore, if you have a fairly new NIC.  If you have a gigabit nic, it's new enough.  Newer nics have an option called Auto-MDIX (automatic medium-dependent interface crossover). This technology detects whether you need a crossover cable or a straight-through cable, and it automatically configures the network interface card accordingly.GOOD POST Stollin ... Quote

Most people these days have at least a single Cat5 cable, and so a peer-to-peer can be established.

However if an external hard drive or USB stick was available for the transfer, that is I feel the best option here due to not having to make any changes to the systems NIC properties.

However if one really wanted to do this for FREE without an external drive or storage device to transfer the data between systems and they didnt have a cross over cable, and the systems were new enough to support this feature, it is a valid option.

For 2 systems I have between the SYSTEM that is a gaming system and the other system that encodes video files ( chugs through large video files created with FRAPS to record gaming events, and then the other system processes the files from raw 30GB video files down to 1.4GB files ), I use a simple cross over Cat5 cable between 2 x 100MBPS network adapters. This allows me to at any TIME pass a file over to the system that is used for mainly video processing projects and have my gaming system free of this heavy CPU/ Hard Drive Read/write process and able to game without lag while another system is running its CPU and Hard Drive full bore to convert a 30GB file down to 1.4GB.Both PC's would need those newer NIC's...this should be mentioned...

Solve : fsquirt.exe?

Answer»

Hi all

I have a Packard Bell OneTwo, Windows 7 Home Premium, Service Pack 1, Intel Core i5-2400s, 64 bit.  I want to send files by Bluetooth from PC.  When I right click a file then click "send to", there is no Bluetooth option.  I can't find the Bluetooth Set Up Wizard and fsquirt.exe is missing.  Any help would be appreciated, thxs.Have you used Bluetooth before on this computer?
A question like yours was on the Microsoft site.
No send to Bluetooth device.
The general answer is that you must manually turn on or start the Bluetooth device. And  you must have specific directories that are for Bluetooth.
PLEASE look at the link above to find more links about Bluetooth and Windows.
Also, look at this:
What is the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard?
Quote

The Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard enables users to transfer files between a computer and a Bluetooth device. For example, users can transfer files between a computer and a mobile phone or a personal digital assistant (PDA). The Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard can also transfer files between two computers that support Bluetooth.

Note  The default GUI that the Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard uses is implemented in the Fsquirt.exe file. This file can be unhooked from the underlying transfer wizard mechanism to enable replacement of the default Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard GUI. For more information, see the following question...
If that does not help, please report back here. HELLO there

I have not used Bluetooth on my pc before.  I don't think my pc has built in Bluetooth.  When I click Start then type in Bluetooth, NOTHING matching comes up.  There is no Bluetooth symbol in the "show hidden icons" tiny arrow.  Will I need a Bluetooth USB dongle?  What about "Bluetooth File Transfer" software.Curious as to why you want to use Bluetooth for File Transfer?

Bluetooth would be my very last option for any file sharing because the PROTOCOLS that bluetooth operate on are very unsecure.

If requiring a wireless transfer, i would go with wireless G or N instead where you will have better security and encryption options for point to point transfers of data.A broad  observation about what DaveLembke said.
Bluetooth is often used for short range low-speed data communications where security is not a major issue.
However, there are a number of innovations and options with Bluetooth.
Bluetooth: What does it really do and will it be replaced?

Quote
Bluetooth can also be used to wirelessly control devices. For example by using Bluetooth to pair a smartphone to some speakers not only can you send music from the phone to be played out of the speakers, but you can also then use the phone to adjust the volume, pause the music or skip track.
Similarly the wireless controllers used by the PlayStation 4 and some other consoles use Bluetooth to pair with the console and wireless keyboards and mice generally rely on Bluetooth
In those kinds of applications you might not care if your neighbors can hear your music selections.
Plenty of other  options for file transfer...a USB stik comes to mind.

Solve : Full Screen --> Black Screen?

Answer»

Hello everyone! My first post here.

First the HARDWARE:
 - OS windows pro
 - AMD 8 core processor FX8350
 - ASUS sabertooth motherboard 990FX R2.0
 - AMD Radeon HD 7900 series

The problem started about two weeks ago: Whenever i run a program in full screen mode (everything from the latest AAA-games to VLC media player) the monitor goes entirely blank. I can Alt+Tab out, or in media player double click to go back to windowed mode, and everything is normal again. Note that the black screen sometimes repeatedly goes away and then reappears, while other times it is permanent.

I had this problem earlier this year (spring) and didn't find a solution. I reinstalled windows, and the problem was gone for half a year. I suppose that eliminates the possibility of a hardware error?

 - I have recently air dusted the case, and it should be well-cooled
 - OS and central programs are run from a SSD, while games and media is stored on a HDD
 - Drivers would be my first GUESS, but Control Center did not find any of them outdated.

And a fun fact: The screen also goes black while VIEWING this youtube video in full screen:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIMLoLxmTDw&channel=CandRfun
And no - not because the video is just black, neither the mouse nor the bottom youtube bar shows. Only videos showing black, all other youtube videos are fine in full screen.

Any assistance is appreciated!Welcome to the forum.

What is control center - is that a third party program that downloads and installs drivers for you? There is no such thing as an outdated driver and you should never allow ANY program to install drivers for you.

Please open device manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?

Please go to the AMD website and download and install the latest driver for your display adapter.

I'll wait to hear the answers before going any further. My mistake, it is device manager I have used to check for driver updates.
For some reason I thought it was called Control Center and not Control Panel (in the start menu)

I have installed the newest drivers from AMD and restarted the computer with no effect. Please boot to safe mode and see if the problem exists there

And you didn't answer my question - are there any yellow or red symbols in device manager? In the limited range of programs I could start in Safe Mode, the problem was still present.
No red or yellow symbols showing in device manager.Well, if the issue persists in safe mode it is likely a hardware issue since only the generic drivers and no 3rd party apps are loaded. If you have another display adapter you can try, that would be my recommendation.Found the solution

After doing some random testing around the blank screen, it turns out my Fujitsu 27" monitor was the problem.

The monitor has some general "modes" for color and contrast. When in "game" mode, full screen, and with dark screen colors or too low brightness the monitor for some bizarre reason chooses to show a blank / completely dark screen. So I basically choose another mode and mess around with the colors and brightness to get the same visuals but with everything working as intended.

Very strange function. Fujitsu is definitely no longer an option for my next monitor.

Thank you ALLAN for your attention!Glad you got it sorted out. Thanks for letting us know.

As I really don't know what is relevant and what is not please disregard what is not relevant and let me know if I have missed anything essential.
My problem is the screen often goes black for a moment - just enough time generally to register that it has happened and then comes back. I have changed screens without solving the problem.
I have noticed that it tends to happen when I have clicked on something to change the screen display or when the program I am running changes the display. It certainly does not do it every time however. It would probably occur about 5 or 6 time an hour. It also seems to occur when the display has lots of images. I can't remember it ever happening when showing only text.
As the computer is still under warranty, but would be a great inconvience to have to return it, I would like to know if anyone has an idea what might be wrong and whether it is likely to become worse or cause the computer to fail completely.
In other words - should I bite the bullet and return it, or go along with what is at the moment merely a slight annoyance.
Thanks
DanSince swapping DISPLAYS didnt fix it... then I'd swap video cards, but first update the driver to latest and see if that helps. I feel you have a video card that is having issues. Also for the fact that this system has the APU, you should be able to remove the video card and run on the APU's GPU portion to see if this issue goes away. Yes, the performance wouldnt be there, but if it goes away for a problem then you know to blame the video card, and if it remains you know its a system problem and not video card.Hi Dave,
Thanks for the advice. However, I should have pointed out that I'm rapidly approaching 80 years of age, and whereas I've been using computers since 1983 I've never tried to fix, add, or adjust hardware, and I wouldn't know a video card if I fell over one.
I'm also wary of attempting to move things LEST I make it worse, or negate the warranty. Sadly I've no teenage grand children who would probably have been a great help, and the only nephew I have that is really into computers is a couple of thousand ks away if he is still working in this country.
Cheers,
Dan

I turned the UAC off. This seems to have cut down the number of occurrences and for a while I thought the problem was solved. However, just a few minutes ago there were two extremely brief flashes of black - almost too fast to register.
What actually does UAC do and can I afford to leave it off. If it is essential for security I'd rather put up with the blackouts.
Cheers,
DanUAC set on as default in Windows 7 are for security measures as explained from the previous link. Not quite sure of the brief flashes but by the looks of it seems to be a flash blackout on screen or a flash black square box?

Solve : '?A Program Not Found - Skipping Autocheck'?

Answer»

In the last two days, I've noticed I'm getting this message - very briefly - right before Windows loads:
Code: [Select]?A Program Not Found - Skipping Autocheck
I've done a System Restore (my corp IT only keeps one restore point), and that has not fixed it.

All my Googling shows areas where either a) They can't boot at all, or b) it comes after a HD/partition; neither of which is my case.

Everything boots fine, just a weird message.

Which Windows version?   Did you do anything that could have caused the loss of files such as delete old data etc or did this show up on its own unexpectedly?
Define "delete old data".... If you mean documents, files, etc., probably/likely. I don't recall running any undeletes or anything before first seeing this (I have undeleted a plug-in to my old Palm Desktop since then...) Quote from: patio on October 18, 2014, 06:58:21 AM
Did you use a Registry Cleaner app recently ? ?
Since first seeing this, but not before that.

(I do have backups of my registry... I guess I could drop them into Word and do a "Compare Changes"?)

rjbLeave registry cleaners alone...they do more harm than good.

I suspect you'll find something in the compare.I keep receiving conflicting advice on that, patio. Not here...we're pretty much all on board with reg cleaners being useless...

Did the app you used automatically create a backup ? ?
If so revert to the backup and see if the error goes away...    Registry cleaners are extremely powerful applications that can DAMAGE the registry by using aggressive cleaning routines and cause your computer to become unbootable.
The Windows registry is a central repository (database) for storing configuration data, user settings and machine-dependent settings, and options for the operating system. It contains information and settings for all HARDWARE, SOFTWARE, users, and preferences. Whenever a user makes changes to settings, file associations, system policies, or installed software, the changes are reflected and stored in this repository. The registry is a crucial component because it is where Windows "remembers" all this information, how it works together, how Windows boots the system and what files it uses when it does. The registry is also a vulnerable subsystem, in that relatively small changes done incorrectly can render the system inoperable. For a more detailed explanation, read Understanding The Registry.
Not all registry cleaners are created equal. There are a number of them available but they do not all work entirely the same way. Each vendor uses different criteria as to what constitutes a "bad entry". One cleaner may find entries on your system that will not cause problems when removed, another may not find the same entries, and still another may want to remove entries required for a program to work.
Not all registry cleaners create a backup of the registry before making changes. If the changes prevent the system from booting up, then there is no backup available to restore it in order to regain functionality. A backup of the registry is essential BEFORE making any changes to the registry.
Improperly removing registry entries can hamper malware disinfection and make the removal process more difficult if your computer becomes infected. For example, removing malware related registry entries before the infection is properly identified can contribute to system instability and even make the malware undetectable to removal tools.
The usefulness of cleaning the registry is highly overrated and can be dangerous. In most cases, using a cleaner to remove obsolete, invalid, and erroneous entries does not affect system performance but it can result in "unpredictable results".

Unless you have a particular problem that requires a registry edit to correct it, I would suggest you leave the registry alone. Using registry cleaning tools unnecessarily or incorrectly could lead to disastrous effects on your operating system such as preventing it from ever starting again. For routine use, the benefits to your computer are negligible while the potential risks are great.

http://www.edbott.com/weblog/2005/04/why-i-dont-use-registry-cleaners/
http://www.whatthetech.com/2007/11/25/do-i-need-a-registry-cleaner/Well, like I said, I ran CCleaner after I'd noticed the text pop up on screen. (I was trying to clean up after a bad uninstall of something that went awry after I'd noticed it, as well).

I noticed it for the first time last Thursday, but I don't spend a lot of time watching my computer boot, so I have no idea when it actually first started appearing.

I TYPICALLY do not have CCleaner save registry copies, because I run an incremental backup nearly every night. That said, I won't have access to them until next Monday, so I will run the compare next week and see what comes up - and post it here.

Thanks.

Solve : More efficient way to print a set of PDF files?

Answer»

Every week i need to print a set of floor plans (in pdf FORMAT). The files change from week to week.  Is there an easy way to specify the files i WANT to print, the print settings (one vs double side, 8.5x11 vs 12x18, etc) and then execute? Instead of opening manually, each file and printing?  this becomes a bit tedious. I don't have the quick answer. But I think you may find it here:
Five Best PDF Readers
You want a program that has OPTIONS that can load from a shortcut or batch.
Each file WOULD have its own shortcut or batch file to PASS parameters to the PDF printer program.

Solve : Hibernation Question in regards to Windows 7 and registry?

Answer»

Was wondering if Windows writes to and FLAGS somewhere in registry that the system was brought down prior into a hibernation mode, so that on boot from hibernation it knows then to read in the hiberfil.sys file to memory to restore back to the original desktop environment. Or if the Hiberfil.sys simply exists and is found by Windows at boot if it just finds this file and runs with it as knowing that the system was last brought down into a hibernation state.

Only info I found on google search was talking about it writing memory to disk and then restoring on the next POWER up to the original environment that was saved. But it doesnt go into detail as to how Windows knows to bring it back up from Hibernation state -or- bring it up totally fresh boot.

Working on a laptop that hibernation is enabled and it works sometimes and doesnt work other times and while I should just reinstall 7 clean, I figured I'd play with this laptop a little further to better understand this process to PINPOINT the cause rather than just taking the easy way out of setting it back to a clean build state.

I feel that the registry may be troubled and so if there is a flag in the registry that should be set that is not, then upon boot of the laptop from hibernation, it will totally skip over loading the hiberfil.sys file and bringing the laptop back up to where it was prior to hibernation. If there is a registry location to inspect, I'd like to know its location in there to inspect it and SEE what I find. When hibernating, the Power Manager saves the compressed contents of memory to a hibernation file, hiberfil.sys, which is large enough to hold the uncompressed contents of memory, in the root directory of the system volume. Compression is used to minimize disk I/O and improve hibernation and resume-from-hibernation performance. When that finishes, it shuts off the computer. When the PC is turned back on a normal boot process occurs, except that Bootmgr checks for and detects a valid memory images stored in the hibernation file. if it contains saved system state, bootmgr will launch "Winresume" which reads the contents of the file into memory and then resumes execution at the point in memory recorded in the hibernation file.

Source: Windows Internals, Fifth EditionSweet!!!

Thanks for all the info BC on this. So its a lower level boot manager that looks at the Hiberfil.sys and based on this decides to boot normally or boot from the hiberfil.sys then.

So on this laptop there may be an issue with the RAM writing to the HDD on shutdown, in which the hiberfil.sys file if corrupted for some reason or another could cause the boot manager to skip over the hiberfil.sys file and boot normally as is the random case here.

I am going to run memtest86 on this laptop since I already ran crystaldiskinfo on it and the HDD came up as healthy. Maybe the RAM is acting up somehow when performing the memory dump to disk into this hiberfil.sys file.

I'll be back to report my findings once I dig out that CD with memtest86 to run on it for a few passes.Well memtest86 came back with some red memory addresses. Removed 1 of the 2 sticks and tested and determined that the one stick seems to be troublesome. Going to see if it behaves on the single 2GB stick and order a replacement stick.

I bet that troubled stick was the cause of the hibernation issue with a scrambled dump or something. I also tested the laptop with going back and forth to hibernation and booting back up and it hasnt acted up yet since removing that 2nd stick that failed with memtest86.

Strange that that stick didnt cause any other stability issues.

Solve : Windows 7 Install Partition Merge across 2 drives?

Answer»

Hello!

So my machine is a bit of a Frankenstein; my graduation gift from high school that has had literally every component but the keyboard and the chassis replaced in its eight years of existence.  6 months ago, the original hard drive was starting to give out, so I decided to get a replacement.  I put my FANCY new drive in, installed windows 7 on it, switched out the drives so the new one was C: and the old one is D:.  On start, it takes me to a screen where I choose which Windows 7 install I want to boot, I pick the first one, and we're all good.  Unfortunately I can't REMOVE the old one, because when I do, the machine stops recognizing that C: has a valid Windows 7 install.  When I first found this, I shrugged, put the old hard drive back inside, and thought nothing more of it.
That is, until my angel of an IT guru blanched upon hearing the tale.  She took a look in my computer manager and found that the functions of the partition seem to be split across the two drives.  I've attached an image of the division of labor as described by my Computer Management program to this post.  I've also included a fresh dxdiag for good measure.  Is there any WAY to merge the install, such that I'm able to boot SOLELY from the C: drive, and can remove the D: drive entirely?

  Thank you for your time

First things first.
Do you have a working backup plan?
Have you saved are your own relevant work, including e-mails and photos?
Do you have the DVDs needed to install all your programs again?
If so...
Second things.
Next, put out the old drive.
Do a full install of Windows 7 again.
Install drivers.
Get the updates.
Install programs.
Restore from backups your stuff.
Third thing.
You can get a enclosure to make your old drive into a backup device.

I have most stuff backed up.  I can do the rest pretty readily.  As for the install discs, I can't seem to find mine, and might just need them shipped across the country if I was the chucklehead I think I was and didn't prioritize them in the move.  Whatever the case, I'll certainly give it a shot whenever I get my hands on the discs.  I was just hoping there was a way to transfer the relevant files from D: to C:, giving C: the whole set and letting me axe D: with IMPUNITY.  If nobody has a way of doing that, I'll take this path as soon as I'm able, and let you know how it turns out.Well, thee is  another way. But what I outlined above is, IMO,  the more conservative way to fix the problem.
Do you w ant the other method?  If so, here is comes....
You get a suitable partition manager program and split the C: in to two partitions. Then use the tool to duplicate the old drive onto the new partition.  The tricky thing is to re assign the drive letters. That can ruin your day.  I have not done this ever, so I an reluctant to even suggest it.

Solve : Help With Some System Requirements?

Answer»

Hi, I know someone asked a question about the Elgato Game Capture but not much was said that could help me out.

I bought an Elgato Game Capture HD 60 to RECORD my games from my Xbox ONE but the laptop I have right now can't really handle it so I'm looking to buy a new desktop computer. I'm not really familiar with computer specifications though.

The system requirements for Elgato are

- Windows 7, Windows 8 or later
- 2.0 Ghz (or higher) dual core CPU, or 2.0 Ghz (or higher) multi-core i3, i5 or i7 CPU
- Sound card
- 4GB Total Installed RAM (or higher)
- Built-in USB 2.0 port

I found a desktop but I wanted to make sure that the one I was looking at can handle these system requirements so if anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

The Key Specs for the desktop I'm looking at are

Processor: 2.0GHz AMD quad-core Accelerated Processor (A8-6410)
Memory: 4GB DDR3 (expandable to 16GB)
Hard Drive: 1TB SATA 7200RPMYou recieved good feedback under your other User name...

That wasn't me. Plus I wanted to know if the desktop I was looking to buy would work. Also, I'm not going to be gaming with the computer, just using the game capture to record my gameplays from my Xbox One.

Solve : DVD boots UBUNTU but not Windows in any form?

Answer»

Trying to fix a Toshiba that wont boot off the HD.  Bios finds both HD and DVD.  When I put in any version of windows boot disk (xp/W7), I get a "media failed" MESSAGE and no boot.  The machine obviously spends some time reading the dvd.  I had a couple of versions of Ubuntu installation disks.  BOTH of these disks will boot the machine.

I am ASSUMING I have some strange problem with the DVD, but have never SEEN something like this before.  I have ordered a replacement DVD for this LAPTOP, but am baffled how it could boot one OS and not the other.

Any ideas.  I'm just curious since I have never seen anything like this.Do these windows discs work fine in other computers? ( this will test if its a DAMAGED disc etc )

Do you have an external optical drive to bypass the (could be troubled) internal optical laptop drive and try to boot off the windows discs with if the discs are good? What exactly does it say on these Win CD's...or are they the "Sharpie" versions ? ?

Solve : Baffled what to do to get my ASUS with Windows 7 Home Premium to work again!?

Answer»

I ran across this website when I was SEARCHING the net for an ASUS Preload Wizard Recovery CD download.  I have an ASUS with Windows 7 Home Premium I purchased in about mid June 2012.  I am teaching in China and the first part of the year, late Feb. to early Aug., 2014 was not having problems with it like I have since I came back to China on Sept. 6, 2014.

I'll give my stats on the ASUS.  It is a 64 bit machine.  It came with a standard Office starter package when I bought it.  I had a downloadable Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus link that I got in May 2013 when I was taking a class and qualified as a student for a good rate on that package.

I downloaded that software onto my ASUS and haven't had problems with it until recently.

My ASUS accidentally got wet in Jan. 2013.  I was able to pull out the hard drive and it was not damaged.  I kept the remains of the computer.

I had bought a used HP Mini from a former roommate and had got tired of its being slow (it only has 1 GB of RAM), so I pulled the ASUS hard drive out in early Jan. 2014 and put it back into the casing, and thankfully it worked.  I took it with me to China.  It was working fine until about May and went blank.

One of my students was techy and he looked at it.  We took it to a campus computer shop.  They said it was shorting and cleaned the insides up with some cleaning solution.  I didn't have any problems with the remaining time I was in China, when I went back for a month in Aug. or most of the time I've been back here since Sept. 6.

A few weeks ago it was loading up okay, but I couldn't use the pad; it doesn't have a mouse.  It has 4 GB of RAM.  I booted it into the Safe Mode and believe I got into some repairs and then it had been working fine until Oct. 24.

On Oct. 24th I was just using some files not the DVD drive like I had been using to show a Connect With English video series.  I had clicked on a PDF which phonetics, and that worked fine.  However, when I tried to click on a Word document, Word wouldn't load up.  It said it had to locate some file and CLAIMED I wasn't a registered Office user and SHUT down out of Office.

I was running diagnostics on it the weekend of Oct. 24 and they were not working in the Safe Mode as they did a few weeks ago when I used a restore point prior to the problem.  This time in the Safe Mode initially it showed restore points but now show none.  I can't get any of the things in Safe Mode to work to find out the problem.

Fortunately I have Open Office on my ASUS and can take old Power Point files into it and convert them to an ODF format and show them to my students in Open Office.

Yesterday I tried to show the DVD in my class in the safe mode and it had the sound greyed out.  I couldn't even see the sound in the Control Panel.

Today, Nov. 1, I have continued trying to troubleshoot.  Last weekend it said one option was resetting it to the factory start.  I am concerned about that because although it shows a Catalog in the Data drive with the original Windows, I am not getting my Office to run.  When I go to the original link, it has you get some downloader but doesn't show the files you need to reload Office.  An original executable Office file is not working.

I got into F9 when I was trying to get it to boot into Safe Mode and it did some kind of system repair.  I was booting it with F8 before it went into Windows and putting it into where I could set it to Safe Mode.  But it was staying along time in loading essential files and going to the standard mode.

I have been noticing what looks like some little character in the tray with kind of an owl head that looks suspicious.  I do have the Panda Cloud Virus on it, Iobit Malware Fighter, something called Advanced System Care 7 and Tune Up Utilities that have seemed to be working fine.

When I was in the Safe Mode last weekend, I tested all the programs which were working except when I got to the Office suite so that's why I feel they are suspect.  My CONCERN as I said if I reset to factory specs will I get Office 2010 Professional Plus to reload.  I don't have an CD with me.

I finally got back into Safe Mode, so I'm backing everything up on an external hard drive while I can.

Help!  Thanks.I'd contact ASUS to purchase the system recovery media. This will set the laptop back to factory settings and software. It sounds like you have many potential issues with this laptop. Also there is concern that while a cleaning solution was used to clean out corrosion from the laptop getting wet, from my own experience, its very difficult to get rid of the white lead film /oxide, especially under surface mount components. If the hardware is still running ok, then maybe your ok. But your going to need restore media.

Solve : Win-8u4ghctp1qn?

Answer»

Hi all - I'm not that smart on computers - but I do understand a little bit.

For the past few months, I've had vista trying to locate Win-8u4ghctp1qn (see attached photo). If you can't see the photo: It shows up in the system notification area on the taskbar as  a square yellow icon with a SMALL red x over it.

I've tried to search for what it is and how to fix it on 3 major search engines but I cannot find the answers. I've tried the System Restore over the last few months but that hasn't helped.   I've cleaned the computer, fixed the register, ran chkdsk & scans, I've made sure all malware (and such) has been removed, defragmented, you name it I've done all of it (I think). About the only thing I have left to do is to update all software and drivers.

The computer is running fine - everything seems to be completely fine. I just do not know what Win-8u4ghctp1qn is or how to begin to go about fixing it. I finally decided to break down and post my question here on the forums.

Thanks in ADVANCE,
Rainey_Dawn

What happens when you right click on that yellow icon?
SalmonTrout - nothing happens. It will not GIVE me a balloon nor a menu. Right or left clicking does nothing. It's kinda WEIRD lol This is all I COULD find about that item. You can look in your installed programs to see if you have the program. Also, try doing a search for the item on your computer.Solved the "mystery" - it is from WeatherBug! I found the missing file(?) at MediaFire Trend, holding my breath I just downloaded it and installed it. I used the first link and not only downloaded Weatherbug but it also came with EZ Downloader (which I now have to uninstall). lol

Solve : BSOD: Driver_irql_not_les_or_equal?

Answer»

Hello everyone.

Since the day I've gotten my computer, I've been getting this Blue Screen of Death error every once in a while. It just says the following error in the top when it happens: Driver_irql_not_les_or_equal

Now, usually I could just restart my computer and it would be no issue, but this morning I've gotten the BSOD error 15 times in a row, and I'm unable to really use my computer for anything. The problem really only occurs if I open some game or have 2 browser tabs open at once. Right now I'm posting from a single tab, which seems to work fairly alright so far.

Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky antivirus and have cleaned my registry today, to see if that was the issue. I've also set my computer to use a system managed page file, to manage my memory usage. The problem also persists in Safe Mode.

When the computer starts and I get the issue report, this is what I'm given:

Problemsignatur:

1. The problem became really bad after uninstalling Kaspersky. Why would I need to reinstall one, when I can't even access the internet? I also most likely would just get BSOD when trying.

2. *censored*.

3. I'll try, but it's possible I just get BSOD when installing it.If you have a network connection (whether or not you can access it) or if you EVER transfer files to your computer, you MUST have an anti virus app installed and resident.

The fact that it also happens in safe mode points to a hardware problem. LET's check the ram and the hd first:

To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd USING a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

To check the hd, go to the website of your hd manufacturer, download their dos based diagnostic utility, burn it to cd and boot to it.

Solve : Factory Settings?

Answer»

I have a Dell netbook Inspiron and I would like to get it back to factory settings.  I have tried F8.  I have used the repair computer and nothing happens.  It does not show factory reset.  What can I do?Have you already went to the Dell web site? The online help is very good, but you have to wade through the documentation. You need the service tag and model number.
www.dell.com/support
Even if you computer is beyond warranty, the web site still is very helpful.
You may have to inquire Dell about getting the restore media SENT to you ether on a USB stick or DVD's. The process then involves booting off the media and performing the restore. Some vendors will send this free of charge ( usually when under warranty TIMELINE ), and usually charge as little as $35 for the restore media set for systems that they still offer restore media for that is outside of warranty coverage.Your computer might have a recovery partition on the hard drive.  This would allow you to restore the system to its original configuration without ordering restore media from Dell.  Try the procedure explained at http://www.ehow.com/how_7692685_recover-inspiron-mini-10-netbook.html

Solve : Where the heck do you find email specs??

Answer»

I have a Dell Inspirion 5520, i5-3210M CPU 2.50 GHz RAM: 8.00 GB, Win 7 Home Premium. The most use this computer gets is surfing the web.  However, I did try to send an email with it and the email won't go.  It says there is an error that says: The connection to the server has failed

Subject "Consumer inquiry from scorpionusa.com"
Server: 'smtp connect net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC0DE
Protocol: SMTP
Port 25
Secure (SSL): No
Socket Error:  10060

I assume this means I need to set up the numbers Comcast gave me for the port numbers (?) but where the heck do you find them?  Win 7 is way more different than my XP and I cannot seem to navigate it.  Thanks for any help in advance.

Debby
Sorry, I said I had an XP, I have a Vista.  Also would like to know how to put my files, doc., etc. on the laptop, Win 7?
See this: http://customer.comcast.com/help-and-support/internet/email-client-programs-with-xfinity-email/   I had to do a Google search to find this.  I first went to Comcast's WEBSITE and that was fruitless.  Glad I don't use them.

Hi Debby

Do you still have the windows Vista computer ? If you do and it still runs Microsoft includes a program in all windows versions since Windows XP called Windows Easy Transfer , In windows XP it was called File and settings transfer wizard.

Here is information on how it works   http://windows.microsoft.com/en-nz/windows/transfer-files-settings-from-another-computer#1TC=windows-7

That will also transfer your email settings if you were using a microsoft email program like outlook or outlook EXPRESS for other email programs Google for a description of how to transfer their settings.

Solve : instantaneous redirection from a website?

Answer»

I am using Windows Vista and Firefox on a Dell Vostro.  There have been a couple of websites that have redirected me to advertising sites without having the chance to get back to the requested site.  It appears for a fraction of a second, then the ad site comes up.  HITTING the back arrow doesn't help.  Is this just some kind of scam and the requested site doesn't really exist or can I get to it somehow?  Thanks in advanceDepending on where on the web you are going, redirection sites do exist. GENERALLY this type of problem happens more frequently with QUESTIONABLE content sites... If otherwise your computer browses FINE and is otherwise not redirected until visiting a specific site, then it can be assumed that its a redirector out there that is fishing for someone to click on it to redirect you elsewhere.

Is the website you are having this problem with appropriate to share here for us to test to see if its really a redirection site or if your system itself is INFECTED somehow with adware? Thanks for replying Dave.  I don't even remember the websites that did this.  It was not something that I was searching for.  It was a hyperlink.  Hyperlink---I think that's the correct term.If it was a one time occurrence then it was likely a redirection site and not malware.

Solve : window keeps dimming and unable to carry on typing until i click back on window?

I'm having problems, when I'm on the internet or any page the window like
dims at the top (where the minimize,Close buttons are) and I'm unable to type and i have to click back on the window to carry on typing, its as if there's something on the computer trying to access another program while I'm on a DIFFERENT program and its stopping me from using the program I'm on to access the one it's after and i haven't got a clue what it could be anyone got any suggestions?

and also i keep losing internet connection every 10-20 mins

i have the HP Compaq dx2300 Microtower running on windows 7 ultimate x86Have you performed a full scan for malware or virus's with a good Antivirus and Malwarebytes?

An annoyance program ( malware or gag program ) could be crafted to set window priority so that taking away the priority from where you are at with a window that is say far off in the corner off the screen from view etc.

My thoughts are that something like this is stealing the focus on you.

There are a bunch of programs out there that a friend could even add to your system to drive you crazy etc such as drunken mouse etc where you try to SELECT stuff and it is not very COOPERATIVE etc. So if anyone else uses this system check with them to see if they are playing a gag on you etc.

If the Window you are in though fades and it says instead that the program is no longer responding then its a totally different issue than a gag program etc. Do you GET any program is no longer responding issues?yeah IVE ran constant virus/malware scans and the results come up clear no viruses or malware and nobody else using the network in my house is playing a joke on my or anything like that i just dont know what it could be??

Solve : 2 windows and 1 is preventing me from starting my computer?

Answer» HI, as the title says, I have two WINDOWS installed and one is screwing me over.

Awhile back my old primary hdd had my windows on it. It was getting suuuuper slow and I knew its time was coming. I made the upgrade to an ssd and installed windows on it. When I did that I had the option from booting from two windows. It didn't really bother me and I just used the ssd boot. Finally as I had suspected, my old hdd failed. I still had it in my computer and one day I just couldn't ACCESS it from the My Computer window. I didn't really think about it, but when I turned my computer off and got back on, my computer would tell me to install a proper boot drive and restart. This was preventing me from getting anywhere and I on a whim decided to unplug and plug back in the old hdd. I restarted and it loaded normally. The weird thing was that I couldn't access the hdd even THOUGH it started up. If I have the hdd unplugged the computer gives me the same message. I even set my 1st boot option to my working ssd. If the computer doesn't recognize the old hdd than it won't work. I have no idea how to fix this other that unplugging and plugging back in the hdd, but that tricks not even working.

Random info I dont have any windows cds or a CD drive. I have access to another laptop and thumb DRIVES

I've tried this solutions:
1) I check my External IP address using whoer.net

Still I can't connect to the server but I discovered something after several workout to see it working!
1- I discovered I can ping any other domain address like google and yahoo but I can't ping
- my External IP address
- the remote DNS address which I setup with (no-ip.com)
I've tried:

Conclusion:
- I can't connect to the remote server because my computer can't ping/connect to my external and remote dns address!
I'll be happy if I can get an absolute solution to this problem i've been facing for weeks despite all my effort but no good outcome

Solve : Scroll and restore problems?

Answer»

When I try to scroll down in windows explorer, the bar will pop BACK to the original position.  I cannot access drop down windows.  In web pages if i hit the control  key (not ctrl +) the page will get larger.  ctrl - does not work to make it smaller.  I tried to RESTORE to an earlier time and get a message saying the this is only a function the administrator can do.  My husband was the administrator and he recently passed away.  I tried to log on as him by switching users and that option is not available.  If it was I don't know his password.  The restore disk is lost.  It is a Toshiba Satellite laptop.  Any HELP will be greatly appreciated. You likely can restore the laptop to the condition it was when it was purchased.  There is a hidden partition usually accessible by one of the "F" keys at power up.  Try F11 or F12.  You will lose all personal docs & all Windows updates & any user installed programs, so save personal files to a flash drive.  You cannot save installed programs, they will have to be reinstalled.

What is the model number of the Toshiba Satellite laptop?
What VERSION of Windows, Vista or 7?  There will be a Widows Product ID attached to the laptop.  Need to know if it was upgraded because the restore partition (if it exists) will match the PID.If the restore procedure mentioned by Computer_Commando does not work, i.e. your laptop does not have a recovery partition on the hard drive, you can order recovery media from https://support.toshiba.com/repair

Solve : Vista does not recover to the out of factory status?

Answer» DESKTOP machine
Windows Vista Home Prem. 32b.
Hard disk drive 500GB partitioned C & D.
And a 20GB hidden partition keeping the recovery system.

What happened:
About a week ago, the PC shut down & restarted by itself while a large folder 1.7GB was copying from my PC to several flash sticks of my friends.  After copying 3 or 4 times, the shut down & restart happened during the copying process.

Many functions were DISABLED after the automatic restart, browser, for example, could not be opened.

Recovery:
A recovery back to its factory status was performed by the function keys.  Everything went on smoothly but the last part of the recovery, the part that configures the time & the PC name & internet and so on was not carried out.  The recovery ended by a restart.

Then, recovery CDs were used to PERFORM the recovery.  And it ended the same way.

The message:
The following message shows up after the restart.
And the system does not boot into Windows.

"Windows could not configure one or more system components. To install Windows, restart the computer and then restart the installation."

Please help.
What seems to be the problem and how to solve it?

Thanks.
What follows is only a guess and is the least invasive method.

My guess is the CD/DVD Rom drive is dirt an the CDs set has dirt or grime. In that case  you NEED to simply blow dust out of the CD-Drive and clean the CDSs.
A DVD/CD should be cleaned with a dry SOFT cloth using a radial motion. Do not wipe in a circular motion. Examine the surface for fingerprints of smudge marks. Wipe gently until the smudge  is gone.

Use the CD set again to restore the system. It might  work the second time.
This is base on experience, mot theory.

So, the first attempt involved restoring from the recovery partition on the hard drive, right?  When the screen(s) appeared prompting you to enter/select "the time & the PC name & internet and so on", how did you respond?  Exactly what happened? I am positive that the DVD's are clean and in good conditions.
And besides, the result is the same if the recovery is carried out by the recovery hot keys. Quote from: soybean on November 16, 2014, 11:10:08 AM

That is exactly the trouble.  This part of the recovery process DID NOT APPEAR.  And the recovery process ended before this part and restarted the system and showed a message saying that Windows could not configure one or more system components.   And it stuck here and could not boot.

Solve : Windows freezing constantly (mostly while downloading or installing software)?

Answer»

Hello, so as the title states I get a LOT of freezes (described below next to **) on Windows 7 (also 8.1) and I'm at my wits end. The freezes become absolutely unbearable while I'm installing new software or while downloading something, also while watching movies (VLC, WMP, you name it...), tho the freezes are happening even when I'm not really PUTTING much stress on my computer.

**whole system hangs for 10-90sec after control unresponsiveness then I hear my HDD start spinning again and the system resumes work, even EXECUTES commands 'qued' during the 5-10sec unresponsiveness period before the freeze.

So far I've tried:

-- 3 different hard drives (first 2 had bad sectors the current one has 0)
-- several different RAM cards in different slots (1-2gb, single on both RAM slots and multiple at a time on both slots)
-- changing thermal PASTE on CPU and GPU (hey what if, right?)
-- drivers (from ASUS support, AMD for GPU and "Driver Pack Solutions" mostly to touch up drivers not covered by ASUS support)
-- 4 different Windows 7 and 8.1 installations (also tried Linux Mint and Ubuntu but used it too little to notice a difference)
-- disk check via CMD (0 errors)
-- deleting ATA channels in Device Manager, letting windows install again and THEN installing all my drivers (seemed to have helped for a -couple of days then back to freeze town, no more "EVENT ID 11 atapi" errors on Event Viewer since tho)

If there's some more info You NEED, pelase let me know.
I'm on an ASUS K52JE laptop.
Also I got frozen 4 times while writing this post, I'm currently downloading stuff and watching YouTube in 720p...

Solve : error code 0x80004005?

Answer»

Hi everyone

I'm trying to transfer a zip FILE to my android tablet via a USB cable.  The original file was 4.4gb which would not transfer.  I used Windows "send to zipped folder" method.  When I zipped it, it became 337.456kb. Because of Windows 4gb file transfer limit I thought if I compressed the file it would transfer.  It starts transferring then before completion the error code 0x80004005 pops up.  I've ran SAS, MAM, SpyHunter and Ccleaner, nothing turned up.  I've ran the Command Prompt and typed in "regsvr32jscript.dll" and "regsvr32vbscript.dll", their alright.  I've done pc scans with Regutility, Regcure, RegServo and SmartPCFixer, they all came up with tons of problems.  Do I need to invest in one of these to fix the error code problem?  Any help would be gratefully received.Instead of transferring this file through USB... you could do go through a cloud storage method eliminating the POSSIBILITY of an issue with transfer via USB.

The 4.4GB also works within the parameters of storage from google drive and amazon. This way you would upload it over high speed internet connection to your cloud storage location and then download it from this cloud storage location to the tablet.Thxs for your reply.

Getting error code "0x80004005" means there is something wrong with my pc.  I want to try and fix it if I can.  I have a funny feeling that Windows file size limit is still 4gb for a zipped file.  When I right click the 4.4gb file and go to properties, the file size reads 337.456kb but on the actual Windows thumbnail, it still reads 4.4gb.  So I don't know if the file size has been reduced or not.  Regarding Cloud Storage: what is the max individual file size that can be stored because I have Bluray movie files that are 5, 10, 15gb in size that I want to transfer to my tablet.Found this here on google search for comparison of all hosts and max file sizes. Also another link below in regards to the error code.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_file_hosting_services

Is this PC Windows XP or a newer PC that is connecting to device that is getting this error? If its xp then this link here might help.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914232/en-usThxs again

I'm running Windows 7.  The error code only happens when I try to transfer a zip file.  The 4.4gb file when zipped is 337.456kb, being below Windows 4gb threshold it should transfer but it doesn't.  I've tried different WIFI transfer methods, they stop just over 4gig as well.  Each of the afore mentioned register software states they will fix the error code problem.  Should I invest in oneA zipped file is almost 4G ? ?
wHAT IS IT ? ? Quote

I've done pc scans with Regutility, Regcure, RegServo and SmartPCFixer, they all came up with tons of problems.  Do I need to invest in one of these to fix the error code problem?  Any help would be gratefully received.

Stay away from PC Optimizers and Registry Cleaners as they can do more harm in contrast to what they advertised.  The 4.4gb file is a Bluray movie.  When I zipped it, it was compressed to 337.456kb, but Windows still reads it at 4.4gb so it will not copy to my tablet.  I'm gonna try an ftp client next.Hi all

I've come to the CONCLUSION that windows will not copy/move any file over 4gb with any method.  My last hope is to use a Cloud Storage medium.  There's so many out there to choose from, I don't know where to begin.  Looks like i'll have to pay to transfer my bluray film files to my tablet.Use TeraCopy instead...Free.P.S. it may be the tablet that has the limitations...look at the Owner's MANUAL...Thxs for your recommendation.

A few questions about TeraCopy.

1) Is this not just for transferring files between internal and external drives?
2) If this can transfer files to external media devices will it over-ride Windows 4GB limit?
3) I believe the TeraCopy interface is quite difficult to understand for a beginner, is that right?I've just tried Teracopy.  It wont work on any files greater than 4gb.  One of the reasons for "error code 0x80004005" could be permissions.  Does anyone know anything about this.

Solve : unable to find keymanager on windows 7?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm wondering if I can get some help with the keymanager on my laptop running windows 7 32bits.

The reason I'm ASKING this QUESTION is that I was trying out a 30 days trial version of a software before purchasing it. Then, before the license got EXPIRED, I was asking the sales to see if I can still use the copy of the trial version after I have purchased the license. This way, instead of uninstalling the software, I can just punch in the new paid license and start using it.

Anyway, I was told that if I want to use the copy of the trial version, I may need to run KeyManager.exe.

I was told it's on my pc. I was trying to find it using search but to no avail. I was LOOKING it up on the NET, and haven't found the one that could help explain it to me clearly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you A brief search does not find a match to what your describe.
The KeyManager.exe is NOT identified as a license key manager. So the sales person may have been talking about some other program.

You said it.
At this point that is the more logical deduction.
Blue screen codes may not correctly identify hardware failures.
IMO you should find what options are available in your area. In some places there are great technicians that can troubleshoot down to chip and components. But hard to find such MEN elsewhere.

The Dell Inspiration M5010 is rather old. -Right? It is maybe worth about $110 in good condition. Maybe you can swap or trade yours plus some money for a unit in better condition. That could be cheaper than t a costly  repair.

I bought it in march 2011. Im not interested in putting anymore money into an old laptop, I can buy a new pc if need be but im just looking to find out if what I suspect is really going on with it and then ill take it from there.

A few questions:

1) Is the Windows 7 disk you used an original, retail version or a copy?

2) Did you install SP1?

3) After installing Windows did you install all appropriate drivers, including the chipset driver?

4) Please open Device Manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?

5) Does the error occur randomly or when you are doing something specific?I don't think Sp1 is installed, i can't update windows now for some reason though, WindowsUpdate_800B0100 I get that error.

1) retail version,
2)I can't seem to update but i may have already installed SP1
3,4)There are yellow symbols but only under the Other devices tab, they are as follows Ethernet Controller, SM Bus Controller, Universal Serial Bus (USB) Controller x2
5) This error occurs pretty much randomly sometimes I'll be on the web, sometimes I'll be browsing DOCUMENTS on computer or typing a letter. And sometimes it will just restart by itself when it's just sitting idle on desktop.

Sorry for the late response I appreciate the quick help You need to download and install the correct chipset driver for your system. If it's a laptop, get the driver from the website of the laptop manufacturer.

After you've done that, make sure you have SP1 installed (Control Panel - System Properties - it will tell you the version of W7 you are running). If it's not installed and if you can't get it through Windows Update, download and install the standalone update version. As I was going to update the chipset my computer BSOD again and now it won't boot up. Here is what I get.

EDIT: It is not a laptop it is a custom built desktop. Motherboard is a Gigabyte H81M-HD3

That HDD may be failing....how old is it ? ?
DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site...

Follow their guide for creating a bootable CD...and run the Long test. This computer isn't more than 3 months old. Been having problems since the build now that I think about it. I'll run the test and get back here asap. Thanks.

EDIT: Windows is actually installed onto an SSD for that computerDouble check all your internal connections with ALL power unplugged...The error you are getting can be caused by anything from a damaged MBR to a major hardware failure. After doing as patio suggests above, the first thing I suggest is that you check the ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso BURNING utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

Second thing is to download the dos level diagnostic utility from the website of your hd manufacturer, burn it to disc, boot to it and run it.

And you will still need to install the chipset driver when you are able TOI believe the lack of proper chipset drivers...after re-reading this are causing the issue...
They are neccessary...especially with an SSD HDD...So i have been searching all over for a driver for my SSD but it doesn't seem to have one its a PNY SSD, I think i'll have to reformat and reinstall windows now because i can't even login for more than a few minutes before i get BSOD and restartHard drives do not require drivers. You just need the correct chipset driver.Alright after fresh install of windows 7 I am still getting frequent BSOD. I found the chipset drivers for my motherboard and installed them and to no avail still.. could this be a cause of faulty hardware? If so what could be not working or dieing on me

Solve : Formatted sd card.?

Answer»

Hi all

I have a strange problem with my SanDisk 128GB card.  I formatted it to NTFS using the Command Prompt.  Now it wont mount up in my tablet.  During the formatting process I got the message "Data error (CYCLIC redundancy check)".  Is this the reason why it wont mount up?  My tablet supports NTFS access.  A 65GB NTFS card mounts up OK.  A 128GB FAT32 card mounts up OK.  I've tried formatting the conventional way e.g. RIGHT click drive>format>NTFS but I get the message "Windows was unable to complete the format".  Any help would be appreciated. Is it in a front slot ? ?...if so try 1 in the rear...or re-do it on another PC...Hi there

Thxs for your advice.  My pc has only one card READER slot.  Is there any other hard/software that can format to NTFS?  I don't KNOW what the "cyclic redundancy check" means.  Is there a problem with formatting a 128GB to NTFS?CRC errors mean the 2 devices arent reading in synch...
Not sure about NTFS but i dont think it's used for SD cards...
There are some card REPAIR tools out there...

Here's One...Just to add to this...if the tool doesn't work it could be the reader itself has gone bad...hence the suggestion to try on another PC.
