Solve : Second Quick Launch Toolbar?

Answer»

I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium on an Alienware laptop, hardware doesn't really matter for this though...

I'm a web developer, and I'd like to have easy access to the six browsers I regularly test my site out on. I'd prefer not to clutter up my desktop with their icons, and PLACING them in my Quick Launch Toolbar would make it too long.

I've TRIED dealing with MAKING folders into toolbars, but that just wastes a huge amount of space on the screen.

Is there a way I could have a second quick-launch-esk toolbar that is more to the right side of the TASKBAR to only have the six browser icons in them?make a toolbar menu

create a folder in explorer with all your shortcuts in it.

right click on taskbar -toolbars-new toolbar

then find your folder with all your icons in it

then select folder and your done

you have a neat wee menu to the right of your taskbar with all your program shortuts in it. :-D

Solve : C:\ drive redirecting elsewhere?

Answer»

So he does have issues....YES. Please, follow the advice from my post #9.Well, I'm kinda lazy to go through installing anything right now. Maybe I'll use the guide later D= but thanks again!Well, it's your computer....If you're lazy to do it you will continue to have issues...
That's how these machines work.Well, what I meant was, not right now lol, but eventually, I'll do it.Best of Luck to ya...You really have some nasty stuff in that log.......it will only GET worse.

You PLAY, you pay.the whole "I'll do it later" thing works fine for homework, but DELAYING a malware clean-up will probably result in the loss of the first PIECE of homework you didn't procrastinate on.

Solve : i can't log onto Windows?

BREAKING NEWS:

Niezle = not bad?
That's it

Quote
i am logged in Safe Mode with networking and typing this message
i was actually able to log off and then back on again (in Safe Mode) with no problems!
Is this after running HD test, or....?i had done a repair install, and now i can log in using Safe Modeok i ran the drive scanner, and nothing bad came up
i did an advanced scan and also the quick scan
afterwards, i clicked on Drive info, and the S.M.A.R.T. status said GOOD and everything else seemed to look okDid you run HD diagnostic?yes i made a disk and booted my bad computer with itDid it run? Did it FIND any errors?like i said, nothing popped up
yes i did the scan and everythingWhile in Safe Mode....

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

Were you able to boot into Normal Mode?did not work
the same problems occurred, and i had to do the repair install
but at least now i'm back on the computer

ok i'm pretty certain that degragging my computer really messed it up
it makes sense that files are missing or not found, and it can't load my accounts in normal mode

is there any way to be certain of this? can i somehow undo a defrag?Defragging is highly unlikely reason for any computer problem.

Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System FILE Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD.
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows RESOURCE protection did not find any integrity violations".

For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it here: http://www.flyupload.com/, and post download link.

If you don't have Windows CD....
(this applies mostly to Windows XP, since Vista rarely requires use of its DVD while running "sfc")
Note This method will not necessarily work as well, as when using Windows CD, because not always ALL system files are backed up on your hard drive. Also, backed up files may be corrupted as well.

Go Start>Run, type in:
regedit
Click OK.

Navigate to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup

You will see various entries (Values) on the right hand side.

The one we want is called: SourcePath

It probably has an entry pointing to your CD-ROM drive,(usually D:) and that is why it is asking for the XP CD. All we need to do is change it to: C:
Now, double click the SourcePatch setting and a new box will pop up.
Change the drive LETTER from your CD drive to your root drive, usually C:
Close Registry Editor.

Now restart your computer and try sfc /scannow again!it only flashes the command box very quickly
nothing happensTry repair: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.htmlumm i'm pretty sure i just did that
i've been doing that this whole time just to be able to log on to WindowsI guess, your last option is to backup your data, and go for clean install, then.

Solve : New OS install Is that my problem??

Answer»

I have a pent lll 750 mb of ram. I just loaded a new xp os on a new hard drive, I also loaded Kaspersky 09. I loaded my old Win2000 when I went to update security and load updates I got the message Expected verision was not found on your machine. when I do a scan with Kaspersky I get postives for detections for anything from dangerous to moderate. Tjis may be related I went into Admistrative tools SERVICES to find a file named Superfetch and couldn't find it to do a tweak I read about. Thanks for any consideration.

For everyone's benefit here, can clarify what you've done? Do have a dual-boot configuration with Win 2000 and Win XP?Thanks Soybean I have one hard drive no dual boot that I know of I didn't set up a dual boot. I have only one partition.
Sooo, which one did you install then, a little clarity wouldn't go amiss!Hey Soybean

Geeez. That would be "Office" 2000. Big typo/brain lock.

Superfetch is a Vista feature, but not an XP feature.

Where did you get your Win XP OS?Hey Soybean Your message got truncated, And there you go the article said that the superfetch was an up date to xp "prefetcher". Well that solved some confusion.Quote from: jestersflunky on April 07, 2009, 06:47:39 PM
Hey Soybean Your message got truncated ...
I hit the Post button too soon, then edited to COMPLETE the post.

Is your new OS a genuine Microsoft WINDOWS CD? Did you successfully register Windows online after installing it?Hey Soybean, I got it at Newegg. I know there were two things one other then register and I don't know which I did unless one of the two requirements were the part to fill in your name before the registering a password, then I did both, and I haven't been notified to register SINCE I loaded it -04 02 09-.

Solve : Computer is in use and locked by administrator ???

Answer»

Hello and thank you for looking at this problem.

I have an AMD Athalon, 2 gig ram, 250 gig drive, running WIN XP Pro.
The drive had a CLEAN install of xp.

It has developed a habit of turning off and not restarting by moving the mouse or tapping KEYS on the keyboard.
I tried to hit the reset button but again nothing happens. It has shut down altogether.

Then when I restart with the power button the computer fires up and comes up with the log on screen but has a message in it that says, " the computer is in use and has been locked by the administrator?

Ive never seen this sort of message before.
Can someone please suggest as to what may be goin on here and how I might be able to fix this issue.

Thank you ImnoGuru. Could either of these be true?

Quote

This behavior can occur for either of the following reasons:

* When the default screen saver is set to use a non-existent screen saver program.
* When you use a corrupted screen saver that is password protected.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/242917

You could be having DISK corruption and/or hardware malfunction e.g. hard drive / motherboard / PSU. You say your cpu is an "Athalon", what kind of Athlon is it? On what motherboard?

Try resetting first. Turning it off normally and then hold the power button in for 5 seconds as you turn on. This fixes a lot, but your settings might need to be reset.

Did you mess with anything or download something prior this happening? If so...Delete it from uninstall programs through the control panel or it's uninstall link. If it's a download do a scan on it and delete it. Restart and try again.

Someone else might have control of your computer... if you didn't lock yourself out somehow. Are you on a home network? Parents can do that.JezztT, did you even read his post? If he can't log in, how can he uninstall or scan anything? Thank you for the reply Dias de verano.
This behavior started suddenly from a working computer, say at least three months of working well.
The computer had a corrupt drive previously, invaded by a mystery popping on the C: Drive. That drive was uninstalled and removed totally.

Then I made the next drive, (there were four in it), the C: Drive, a 250 gig seagate and loaded a fresh install of XP Pro on it as the O/S.

Then the fan on the chip died and I replaced it. It was about this time that it started with this problem.

I had been thinking that it might have overheated and had a safety setting that will turn the computer off altogether (like my Dell).

Someone else might have control of your computer... if you didn't lock yourself out somehow. Are you on a home network?

Thank you for your entry JezztT. This is my highest concern. That the previous drive had a mystery infection of some kind that even withe help of CH experts run a clean BILL of health, yet the popping continued, so I removed the old drive altogether and reloaded a new O/S. (Although there was nothing of any note on the new drive the 250 Seagate, I didnt format it, I just loaded Win XP pro to it).
Yes there are three computers on the same ADSL modem.
I am of advanced years so mum or dad dont come into this senario, and I enjoy the peace and quiet of living alone now, so interfrence from others would not apply either.
Quote from: Dias de verano on March 29, 2009, 07:26:15 AM
If he can't log in,
Now, and thank you for your thoughts Dias de verano. Actually I can log in as I know the passwordsequence.
That isnt an issue, so thanks for the concern.
My concern is that it seems to go to the windows screensaver for a time then just switches off altogether, and to restart it you literally have to restart it complete with a new log in screen, and when that screen appears it has a message that says... (as above) the computer will lock when it goes to sleep... the power button simply wakes it up.

Nothing mysterious here. Vista does this by default, actually. Thanks BC_Programmer, I can UNDERSTAND that this is a standard FEATURE, IF it were set to do it.
However I havent set it and it was all systems go before hand.

So lets say it has reset itself.
How do I unset this please. Is there a place where I can unset this (say) hibernate feature.
I have already looked in the control panel at display properties and all seems to be correct. A most interesting developement.
Now it seems the computer is refusing to restart AT ALL.
Please hold your thinking caps while I test a few things , like the power supply and spo on. Many thanks to all involved.ImnoGuru Ok. Taking out the power cord for a few minutes seems to have things back to ... well Ok at least.

Solve : won't update vista?

Answer»

My updates are piling up. No error message. Just a little box telling me to reboot because the updates were not INSTALLED. Followed a number of ADVICE PATHS, but no updates will install. I now have 22 updates stacked up. I am a beginner, embarrased and humiliated. Even just a link to the solution will help.

TderoseI'm gonna ask a very pretty SIMPLE question,GENUINE WINDOWS??
Absolutely. Came with the Dell.
TderoseHave you tried to go to Microsoft update and downloading and installing one of the updates manually?

If this works I would keep doing it one at a time until you find the update that FAILS than post the update number here.

I have to pick up children from school. Will try this on return.

Solve : My Comp(HP MEdia Center) cuts off/shuts down Automatically?

Answer»

Thanks for the help, see attached...
I believe the files are zipped right,..the computer turned off/crashed when i tired to restart 1st time..i wait 5mins, then cut back on for mini dump files...Please advise going forth, thanks again!

This is the only error that KEEPS poppin up(maybe unrelated)
KBD.EXE has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

There is only one dump file.
It reveals IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL at SYMEVENT.SYS file, which is Norton file.
Do you use Norton?

Download HijackThis:
http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/tools/security_tools/hijackthis/download
by clicking on Download HijackThis Installer
Install, and run it.
Post HijackTHis log.

NOTE. If you're using Vista, right click on HijackThis, and click Run as Administratoryes i use norton 360. I know there is only one file, my system shutoff the first time I tried to restart..should i restart my computer and try to post files again to see if more dmp files are FOUND in minidump folder??
I will download Hijack and post log...

Why do you think this problem has gotten progressively worse? Before I could at least stream VIDEO or browse pages without the system shutting down. It only did this when I ran video thru media center...thanks again!
Please do post new dmp files, if any.

I have no answer to your problems, yet. We're still in the middle of investigating, but one thing, I know for sure: with Norton, you never know what kind of problems lay ahead of you.see attached for log..

You said, you had some new dmp files?

I'm pasting the log for better view...

Solve : 8 small versions of my desktop ^^^now with pics?

Answer»

My problems started with a pop-up "hpzsetup.exe" This thing would pop up whenever I started or closed a program as well as plugging or unplugging from the usb.

I contact hp by email and they said the pop-up was from them but I should:

#1 Reinstall Usb Drivers
#2 Reinstall Chipset Drivers
#3 BIOS Update

As I finished #3 my computer went into Matrix mode. Green vertical lines then mixed with red occasionally. I have to shut down and when I start back up I have 8 little working versions of my desktop.

I contact hp by phone and the tech say I should :

restart > F11 > Microsoft system restore to a date when life was great and no computer problems, so I did. My computer worked great again, the birds where singing and the sun was warm on my face, life was good. I shut down my PC and all was good.

Next day (today): Start up the PC and within 5 minutes it was Matrix time again > BAM! > Right back into the 8 small desktop on my screen. Well atleast I know how to fix it now with out hours of wonderful conversation between someone from Mississippi trying to talk to some one from India. So I restore the same way I did before and my computer works normal for about 5 more minutes and directly back into Matrix>8 Desktop time.

What is going on? I have searched and found nothing of the sort on the web. Help!

HP dv2500
Vista Home Premium
Nvidia 8400?
120 GB
Intel Centrino DuoSo you updated the BIOS?

Do you know what version you had and what version you updated it to?

Did you use the correct update to FLASH the BIOS? (did you look for your computer model number in HP's site?)here is the link for the BIOS updated provided by hp in the email:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41501-42000/sp41959.exe

Update: I TOOK my computer over to my father-in-laws to show him the problem and my computer worked fine all day. But, now my problem is back. I took some pictures of the process.

Wow.

Look through your BIOS and make sure everything checks out, specifically anything regarding your Screen or Video Adapter.

However, I strongly suggest flashing your BIOS with your original version, getting rid of this update.Replicated or offset multiple images
Multiple images on the screen horizontally or vertically indicate that the scan rate is way off (by a factor equal to the number of complete pictures.) This could be a fault in the monitor or you could be running way outside of the monitor's specifications. Even slightly exceeding these for the horizontal or vertical may confuse the scan rate selection logic and result in the monitor setting itself with incorrect scan rate settings.
A situation where successive sweeps alternate position slightly resulting in double or triple images may be caused by a incorrect or out of range video timing, a bad component, or improper SYNC signals.

Found the above info at this website:

http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/monfaq.htm#monhodegI cannot tell from the pics- is this an LCD or CRT monitor? DERR. Centrino means laptop and laptop implies LCD.

can you try another monitor[/s] can you try an external monitor (assuming there is a VGA or DVI plug on the laptop).

since this occured when performing a BIOS update, that is our first clue. Although it will be DIFFICULT you will need to try to get the BIOS version back down- or perhaps try reinstalling your Video card drivers.

Also as karnac said the laptop could now be driving it's LCD using clock settings that are too high- the best way to check this would be to enter the Display properties and try lower resolutions.

Right on BC....

My handy dandy video failure flowchart says the problem is a resolution mismatch between the monitor and the video driver....Try selecting a different resolution for the screen.how would I go about changing back to the old BIOS version?Quote from: satisfied on April 07, 2009, 01:22:20 PM

Getting a new computer...How do I TRANSFER data or files that I have on my old computer( stuff I want to save) to the new one? And, how do make sure that data on old computer is deleted before I DISPOSE of it? Thanks, JoeJoe...

What's the OPERATING system of the old computer and what's the operating system of the new computer?old system is Windows XP... new is Vista SP1 Home PremiumUse the File Transfer Wizard to transfer data to your new machine...

You'll NEED a null modem serial cable to do this transfer.

When you've finished the transfer and have all of the data over to the new machine, you can low-level format the new drive to wipe it CLEAN of any data, including the operating system.Sorry...the above information is for Windows XP.

Solve : Problem with supported resolutions in Vista?

Answer»

I just upgraded to Vista today, and I cannot get 1240 x 1024 resolution. After installing I was able to set the resolution to 1240 x 1024 and even higher. After installing all the updates and my most recent video drivers my highest sported resolution is now 1024 x 768. I have a 19 INCH CRT monitor and 2X Gforce 8600 GT going SLI. Please help, I have tried to reinstall my drivers a couple of times, and also have tried to set a custom resolution with my Nvidia control panel where 1240 x 1024 recalled as an error. If anyone knows how to force an unsupported resolution that WOULD be fine, but I would like to fix this problem. Just to make sure, are you installing Vista drivers for your Video card? What about your Motherboard Chipset drivers?

If you look in Device Manager, are there any Yellow Question or Exclamation Marks?

Solve : Windows Vista Home basic wont boot?

Answer»

Yesterday, I WENT to turn on my desktop and just before it could boot into windows, it shut down and a message on the monitor say "ower saving enabled. The computer will shut down in a few seconds" then monitor went blank but the power button kept blinking. I tried restarting several time but get the same message.

Any idea what's happening and how to fix it?Not a LOT to go on.

How old is the machine? Any problems with it recently? New hardware or software installed? Give us something to work with....Sorry about that brundle. The computer is about 16 months old. There have been no recent updates to software ( not counting NORTON 360 trial) in the last two weeks. Everythings has been working FINE until Friday evening when the system suddenly will not boot into Windows. I am not able to start in safe mode nor initiate the repair mode in Vista, consequently, I am unable to check for the problem. I have some important files that I want to save. Incidently, I tried to used th restore disk to atleat get into the OS but that too quit just before Windows could boot up. I can't think of anything else. If you have specific questions, I will try to PROVIDE information.

Thank you.If you have important files to save hook up your drive as a slave in a working machine and backup your data...Vista does not need to be running to do this.

Slave Drive TutorialThanks for the input Patio. I understand that process. I will do that if no other solution is recommended. I do want to solve the problem with the computer not booting up, however.Quote

"ower saving enabled
Say again? If you can get into BIOS setup, look for the screen with 'Power Saving Features' listed and change it to 'Disabled' ....... Don't forget to 'Save Changes' when you exit the BIOS setup screen.

Solve : Zipped Files - PLEASE HELP :(?

Answer» HI, this is really anoying and is most likely really easy to solve but here GOES....

I BOUGHT a new computer (The one I am on now), it's Windows Vista and has 3 user acounts on here.
One for me, one for my sister and one for my mother.

My mother and sister can download, extract and create zipped files by simpily right clicking on it and selecting it on the drop down menu that appears, yet files that are zipped/compressed on my ACOUNT are shown as word documents which are then unable to be opened or read. I also can not create zipped files.

I have another computer and laptop in the house that both work with zipped files with no problems, one being vista and one being XP, so i do not understand why zipped fiels do not work for only one account on one computer.

So my question is: How can I get zipped files to be reconised on my account?

Please Help if you can, Any ideas are welcome, Thank you xWelcome First off, are you an administrator of the computer? In other words, do you or do you not have a limited account? If it is limited, thats probably what it is. Post back whether or not your account is limited. Both me and my sister are administrators while my mother isn't.

xxYou said that the zipped folder is being shown as a word document? If you double click it, what happens? It trys to open it in word and then an error message comes up telling me that the FILE can not be opened in word. Ive tryed opening it in something else but, again, it won't let me.
I also tryed to change the 'file type' but I can't do that either.

xxYou mean that you tried to right-click it and tried from there? The only other thing I can think of is that your flie association for zipped files is damaged/gone. The only place I found is here:
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.html
where you can get a fix for it. However, you need to unzip a folder to acces it. Which it sounds like you cant do. The instructions to use it are provided in the link.XP's inbuilt zip handling really annoys me. (Haven't tried Vista yet).
I used to be one of those people that had to solve everything.
I have learned that I would have to live till 1,000, if I kept doing that.
If you are not intending to live to 1,000 -
Try the free 7Zip
http://www.7-zip.org/
It has nice right click options, such as the one I use all the time -
'Extract here'

Solve : how do I set up an Ext hard drive??

Answer»

I have a Western Digital ext hard drive. How do I automatically save all documents etc to the E drive as well as the internal drive?

The only options I see in the SAVE AS utility save documents in the floppy drive, not the E drive.Do you just want to back up your whole system, and then if you add anything else extra it will be saved auomatically on a scheduled task? Or do you mean as soon as you save a file, that it saves into 2 locations? Both. I would like to save everything already on the main drive, all documents etc and then everything saved from now on , saved to both at the same timeYou should look into an imaging program such as ACRONIS True Image or Ghost.
There is a FREE VERSION of MACRIUM Reflect that ACTUALLY works rather well but is missing some bells and whistles such as network backups and scheduling...

Full Review of Macrium Reflect Here...what I found was software for XP or Vista. I am running 2000pro. If there is no software program for 2000 to set up automatic saving on both drives, how do I set up the ext hard drive to save and can that drive option (E drive) be substituted in the save as MENU for saving to a floppy? (A drive)

Solve : indexing options in vista?

Hi.

Ok. Vista. I go into indexing options (which I assume ALLOWS you to determine search parameters, right?) and I can't get programdata to be INCLUDED in the search under local disk (its saying that its exempted by DEFAULT). It says that I need the administrators PERMISSION to deselect it as an exemption - I am the administrator and I can't get it to work.

Any help will be great - cheers, guys.

Solve : Download Manager History Removal?

Answer»

I run Vista Home Premium on a Dell insperon 530, and all updates are installed. I use MSN DIAL up as my ISP. I always delete my brouser history and temporary internet files, and I run Cc CLEANER, and Zdelete. And, I always delete all downloads in Download Manager.

But when I open the Download Manager screen and click on "View History", there is a list of everything that I have ever downloaded. Each entry says that it is located in temporary internet files, which of course have been deleted.

If I right click on these entries nothing happens. How can I delete this list?

Thanks.
0708

What Download Manager are you talking about? As I said, I use MSN dial up as my ISP (MSN Explorer). The pull down menu under "View" includes "Download Manager". That is the Download Manager that I am REFERRING to.

Soybean, I am sorry that I don't have better way of explaining this.

Thanks.
0708OK, I'm not familiar enough with MSN Explorer (never used MSN as my ISP) to help. Let's see whether SOMEONE else, someone familiar with it, will chime in here. Thanks for trying, Soybean. BTW I got an answer from MSN. They said that my user ACCOUNT settings have been corrupted. And, they gave me a procedure to reestablish the settings.

Can't say that I understand this as everything except the clearing of this file has been working just fine.

Thanks again.

Solve : Computer won't boot in safe mode!?

Answer»

I am in desperate need of help!!!

Tonight, TRYING to be the smart person that I should be, read an article on Yahoo about the Conficker worm and what to do in order to avoid it.

It suggested to MAKE sure that you have Microsoft updates.... check
Make sureyou have updated antivirus, etc.... check
Then it suggested, if you were still concerned, to try to boot into safe mode. Well, genius me, opened msconfig and changed, went into boot, and changed it to safe mode.

Now, it seems that I did have problems after all. When I restarted my computer into safe mode, it will not boot - NOTHING.... nothing at all comes up..... Can someone PLEASE, PLEASE help me?!?!?!?!hey!

I need more information:

Do you see BIOS screen, Do you see anything on monitor?

If you press F8 at start-up, what happens. Do you see Advanced Boot menu?

Please give us more information.

Sykes

Sykes

I set the system configurations to RESTART in safe mode - minimal. Then, I restarted my computer and absolutely nothing comes up on the screen. I can hear it processing, but nothing happens. When I press F8 it only beeps, there is absolutlely nothing on the screen. I even tried running the Windows Vista operating system disc, still nothing - just a blank screen.

I had heard that the conficker worm prevents your computer from restarting in safe mode, so I am worried that I set system config. to restart in safe mode that I will never get it to restart in normal mode....

I just don't know! I can see my thesis and dissertation going down the drain.....

Please helpHi,

If you could not see anything on the on the monitor, then the issue related to Hardware, because: Msconfig is related to Windows only. Changing any settings in msconfig should not AFFECT BIOS screen etc etc.

You may need to try Connecting another Monitor first, if the issue PERSISTS, reseating all hardware may help

Thank you

Sykes

Solve : Firefox?

Answer»

Being a total newbie can someone EXPLAIN Firefox to me and do I have it on my system, everyone goes on about it but I don't think I've ever used it. Vista home pro 36.its a superior replacement to internet explorer which comes with your pc

google firefox and download it then install like a regular program
then use it instead of ie cause its better :-DSo I should replace internet explorer for Firefox? Is that better?i wouldnt replace. just use instead of. some websites are still not up to date with firefox and can only be viewed in ie so keep both but use firefox as your default browserNEVER remove IE. I dont even know if it can actually be fully removed. Sometimes you will get some issues if you get rid of IE. I myself prefer IE over firefox, but usually firefox is a little safer since most ATTACKS are on IE.I have Norton which seems to pick up most problems.... seem to get a trojan a day at the moment lol. Will firefox PUT me in a better, safer position guy's? THANKS for the help by the way!Usually what sites you visit will give u VIRUSES, but all in all firefox is the safer bet.

Solve : 100% CPU Usage from World of Warcraft??

Answer»

Alright, here it goes. This computer is a gateway laptop, brand new. 4GB RAM, Centrino2 Duo processor running Windows Vista 62 bit.

One would think that such a decent computer would be able to handle a 500k memory program like World of Warcraft. In fact, it ran like a dream when I first picked the computer up. However recently the graphics have been lagging terribly, and I finally found out why. When I open the game, I go from 6% to ANYWHERE from 80-100% CPU Usage in the snap of a finger. Now, on the processes page, the biggest process right beneath Warcraft is dwm.exe, which is the computer itself as a friend told me. Why it's working so hard to run itself doesn't really make sense to me. I've tried defragging, I've tried clearing up space on the drives. The only thing I haven't tried is re-installing the game, which if I can avoid it would be great.

Any ideas?DWM.exe is the Desktop Windows Managment...the program that shows those pretty 3-d kind taskbars and such.

You should not kill this proccess, but instead you can switch it to Classic mode that removes the Glass/3d look of the taskbars, windows and stuff.

That will increase your performance. That definately helped lower the numbers a bit, but when the game is running and active, I'm still sitting at 50%+, which I would think is still unnecessarily high.

The graphics are at their lowest setting for the game. I tried setting it to fullscreen mode, and the huge CPU usage problem still exists. It's not at 100% anymore, but 85% is still pretty insane.

Just thought of something. Would it make a difference if WoW was run on the D drive instead of C? I'm not very computer savvy, the IDEA just popped into my head, heheh.

Also think I should add that the graphics card in the computer is NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS. I'm wondering if there's a way to adjust the card to better handle the grapics aspect. Perhaps having it on its HIGHEST setting is hurting more than helping? Can you scan your system with HijackThis and post the logs here? It's a game. It's designed to use the CPU as much as possible. That is fair mate. Games do eat up usage but there ment to. If it's pulling in 85% usage what else do you need your playing a game!! If your playing the game and TRYING to use some other programme then... it will never work the way you hope it will.Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 01, 2009, 07:41:36 PM

It's a game. It's designed to use the CPU as much as possible.

Metal Gear Solid on my computer doesn't even use but 45% of CPU time

Solve : Is this fixable? Partitioned main HDD by accident.?

Answer»

So here's what happened. I tried to format my EXTERNAL HDD with partition magic to FAT32, but ACCIDENTALLY I THINK I partitioned my main hard drive. As soon as I click OKAY to start, my computer crashed.

Now, whenever I start it up, either I get a BSOD with "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" or it just reboots itself.

I use my Vista disk in an attempt to restore it, but no luck, it doesn't even show under "Select an operating system to restore." When I go into "My Computer" through the recovery menu, I see my Recovery partition, that's it. fixboot and chkdsk /r didn't work either.

How can I fix this while at the same time retaining all my files?
try this

good luckHow exactly do you use it? I looked for tutorials but am still kind of confused.

I put it on a flash drive but there's no way to run exe from system restore window.Further detail on the problem:

sorry about your problem.
I have a simple solution. unplug computer, load into your transport of choice. Take to one of those wonderful creatures commonly known as "IT techs" or computer techs'. Thank heavens that you wonderful folk exist or I would be finished.

So what you mean is your PC can't register your HD? Has this HD ever been removed? How old is this HD?

So you got in the Vista repair... not console any more =(... window? and it does not recognize an OS?
If you try to install Vista (don't fully-complete it, just go to the partition window) -- does vista recognize a HD of some sort? (make sure it isn't a USB stick =P)

Take out the hard drive, load it into ANOTHER computer, back up files, get [emailprotected] killdisk, burn dos version, wipe disk, REINSTALL windows =)Quote from: liambiscuit on March 29, 2009, 08:11:37 AM

Thanks for the reply, I can get into the Error Recovery screen where one of the options is command prompt (if that's what you were referring to.) The other options are startup repair, system recovery, etc. But BEFORE that screen, I am supposed to pick which partition to continue on, but the problem is, NONE shows up. I just click next with no partition selected, so that's why the startup repair and command prompt don't work.

I think it acknowledges that Vista is on the hard drive, thats why I can get into error recovery, but I can't actually boot into Vista nor see it as one of the available partitions. I think I might have messed up the boot table/sector or whatever from based on what I googled, but I can't find anything to fix it from startup (alot of the available programs run IN windows.)

And to mrdoe, how do I do that? I was thinking about getting an external enclosure and then pull the info out that way, but will it work?

Keep in mind my computer is a laptop with a 2.5" drive.

Solve : problem installing printer driver?

Answer»

I just did a fresh install of Windows Vista and Service Pack 1, including all other updates. I downloaded the driver for my Lexmark z730 printer from Lexmark's website. Upon installing the driver, it tells me that it has detected an older version of the driver on my system and it NEEDS to uninstall it before PROCEEDING.....Whatever the he** that means........ok so I uninstall, restart, TRY installing again and it does the same thing... Do I need to completely ZERO my harddrive before reinstalling? What's the deal here?I am by and large no expert mate but if you mean completly format you drive then NO! Don't do that at all. The answer is coming from one of these wizz kids! May be..Travel to Device Manager and right clik the printer and select "remove or uninstall".
Then go to Add/Remove programs and uninstall any Lexmark Apps you see...
Power down and unhook the printer.
Power up and re-install the printer drivers...it will tell you when to hook up the printer...

Let us know how it goes. The printer is NOT attached to this computer. It is attached to another computer (windows XP) on the network.

I't not attached to the computer? Have you tried to connect it? I know the answer already but got to ASK!Quote from: hot dog on April 01, 2009, 09:01:49 PM

The printer is NOT attached to this computer. It is attached to another computer (windows XP) on the network.

There is absolutely nothing in your original Post that mentions this being a networked printer...

Start Over.sorry...

There is a USB printer (Lexmark z730) attached to a computer with Windows XP installed. The printer works on that computer just FINE. My Vista Computer and the XP computer are networked together through an AT&T 2Wire Gateway.

However, I just reinstalled Vista today and when I try to install the printer driver, it tells me that an older version of the driver is already installed and needs to be uninstalled. So I say "OK" to uninstall it, restart, try again and it tells me the same thing... How could there be an older version of the driver installed when this is a fresh install?

Solve : Restore Failure?

Answer»

Hi people NEED some help if you can, I've been having problems with my DVD drive where it stopped functioning I could run normal data discs games etc but not DVDs (very similar to someone else's post). With "help" from the Microsoft website I backed up my registry through 'systempropertiesprotection' and then went into 'regedit' to delete UPPER and lower filters. Only the lower filter was there so I removed that and restarted. The DVD drive then took a complete nose dive and stopped functioning. So I attempted to restore the registry and everything works fine until it reboots then it has an 'unknown error, unable to restore' message. I have managed to get partial use back out of the drive but it is in no way working PROPERLY. I scoured Microsoft help online and left some choice messages with them but.. well I'm stuck. Anybody can help please. Thanks in advance. Is the drive listed in Windows Explorer, and Device Manager?Yeah the drive is still listed. But won't play DVD's anymore. I think it's died!XP doesn't come with a DVD codec, btw.using Vista. pro home 36Did it play DVDs before? Does it play CDs? How old is the drive? The drive is 1yr 3mths old... I't kind of plays cd's but not the way it use to.. does that make sense? It takes twice as long and then asks me what programme I should use. The hard drive runs for ages and then the message comes up. Cheers Broni your advice is appreciated. It really sounds like failing drive.
New one goes for about 30 bucks.Yeah I think it's had it's DAY. I have burnt about 200 dvd's on it. Is there a LIFE on how many burns you can do?No.Yeah. Optical drives are totally unpredictable. Probably the worst computer part...LOL

Solve : Taskbar has disappeared?

Answer»

My son has a 3 year old Dell Laptop with Windows XP.
WITHOUT a taskbar he can't shut the computer down properly.
A picture takes up the whole screen.
He can use 'ctl, alt, del' to get at the task manager but not the task bar.

That's all I know.

Thanks. You need to do a search for 'Taskbar and start menu'. On there you should be able to click on 'lock the taskbar' and 'taskbar always on top' I'm using Vista so not that up on XP but similar set up. That should sort it.Do you see the desktop icons at all? Or is just the task bar missing? For the time being he can use Ctrl+Alt+Delete and shut down from the Task Manager until he GETS it sorted. Thanks to all.
The icons are gone too.
Nothing shows but the picture used as the background.Press START on the keyboard then go to the control panel, search for TASKBAR & STARTMENU

For the desktop ICON, RIGHT CLICK - then ARRANGE - select SHOW DESKTOP ICON

Control+Alt+Delete

task manager-

File->New Task

type, "Explorer.exe"

the taskbar and desktop icons should appear.

If they appear and then dissapear, my guess would be a malware issue. If this is the CASE I recommend visiting the malware forum for more assistance. (note that you can start a web browser via the new Task by typing in "Firefox" or "iexplore".

ignore this. explorer isn't loaded and as such it hasn't hooked the Windows key to show the start menu, which wouldn't show anyway since it is part of the previously mentioned not loaded explorer.

Also for the same reason explorer hasn't run and hasn't made the screen-sized invisible listview control that it then subclasses and intercepts mouse clicks to show the menu you describe.

Without explorer, the desktop is simply a picture. Or in the most drab scenario a single colour. Thanks BC_Programmer. Looks like that will take care of it.

Solve : computer wont boot properly?

Answer»

Ok, this happend right after i scheduled a disk check, it was going through it and it got stuck, it stayed in the same place and didnt mov so i restarted my computer and now it always says a disk check has been scheduled and it will not complete the check and when i try to skip it it says windows is now booting but stays on that screen and doesnt boot. i have tried safe mode and it will not load, it gets stuck like halfway through loading the drivers, i have also tried using my installation disk to repair it but to no avail. there were no recovery points set either so i dont know what to do.

specs: windows vista 2gbRAM intel core2duo extreame 1.8 GHz processor nivida geforce 9600 video card or something like that and i think i have a 320gig western digital HD

any help would be greatly appreciated, if there is a way to recover the data from the drive without having to boot or a way to like temp. boot it so i can backup stuff onto a portable hard drive and then i can reformat that would be great.

thankyou

Ill give switching EM a try....hope it works :Sjust tried it, my hard drive is a SATA drive not IDE and i dont know how to switch it to slave and lots of cables are BLOCKING it so i grabed a spare IDE cable i had in another computer, pugged it in, grabbed the HD from the computer i took the IDE cable from (the hard drive has xp installed) plugged the IDE into one of the IDE ports on my mobo took the power supply from the dvd drive and plugged it into my Other HD, it is already set to master so i started my computer up, but it just gets stuck on the intel splash screen at the start, doesnt even load, maybe because i have two drives selected as master? if so how do i make the SATA one into a slave?
Im assuming its a sata drive cause ive only ever used IDE and my parents bought me this computer. The drive has a thick red cable going from mobo to drive and another wierd cable that PLUGS into these long thin pins on the drive.

~EDIT~ just tried all the jumper setings but to no avail

I do have a portable HD 500 gig, can i install an os onto that and maybe boot from it?on the harddrive there will be a table that shows everything from cable select to slave. its just a 2 prong pin where its position is, is how its mode is determined. i know not everyone has money to waste/use, but if i were in that situation i would buy a larger sata hard drive and use it as my drive that i back-up to. IDE is a thing of the past, its all sata now, so to me its worth it, if you can find a deal on something like a 250gig hd for $100. if money is an issue, see if a friend has a spare drive you can borrow, or just bring your harddrive with a sata cable and just do it at their place.

Solve : Vista Administartive Tools not working!?

Answer»

Most of them anyway. I run Vista Basic x64 and I went to Control Panel, System and Maintenance and Administrative Tools to open up task Scheduler. It would not open right away. Instead a window popped up that said "Adding snap in console". Then after about 10 seconds , it opened.

Most of the other items in Administrative Tools wouldn't open right away either, though I have had Event Viewer turned off for awhile, so I hope that didn't contribute to the problem. I did start it up again, in hopes of it solving the main problem with the other tools. It didn't.

Computer Management, Data Sources, Event Viewer, the ISCSI Initiator seemed to wanat to work and asked me if I wanted to connect to the Internet. I said no. Also the Task Scheduler and the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security would not open. But the Memory Diagnostics tool, Reliability and Performance Monitor, System Configuration, Memory Diagnostics Tool and Services opened up just fine.

I have had some scheduled tasks and services turned off for awhile and I hope that hasn't contributed to the problem. I always have done that with Vista to save on resources and I've never had a problem. Besides the ones I turned off or disabled have always been things that are not that important.

I should also note, though I do not know if this connected to the problem or not, that sometimes System Restore loses restore points, all by itself. And I had trouble opening it today, but now it seems fine. Also, when I run System File Checker, nothing ever shows up as having an error or being fixed, and I've always had things show up before on SFC.

So I don't know what's going on. I did run a diagnostic. I generated a Health System Report. All it showed that was that Remote Access Connection Manager or RasMan, had abnormally stopped, but it didn't say anything about how to fix it. By the way it LISTED the path for that as C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs, which sounds a little fishy to me. But what do I know!

I did go into services after that to try to start it again, but when I did, I received an error message that said "Windows could not start the Remote Connection Manager. Error 1068. The dependency service or group failed to start." Same goes for the Remote Access AUTO Connection Manager. It would also not start.

The only other thing that showed up in the Health System Report was that User Account Control was disabled. I knew that already, SINCE it normally is the first thing I turn off after I install Vista.

So that's it. In my opinion, I know much of this sounds like it could be a virus. However I am only running AVG Free for antivirus and a-squared for SPYWARE, both of which are average or slightly better at the most. So I may put back on my Kaspersky Internet Security TOMORROW to see if that picks up anything.

I have not always used it because I have noticed some system and internet slow down with it.

Hope we can work together well and solve this mess!

Make sure that you save any and all DATA first Thanks, I just bought a back up drive from BB....and Im starting to back up everything.1) If you are mega paranoid, use Patio's suggestion in reply #1, above.

2) If you are very paranoid, a) make backup of your data (as you are doing; VERIFY that the backup is good), b) make a set of Recovery Disks (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00809678&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3559331#WhenCreate), c) download and run Darik's Boot & Nuke, d) use Recovery Disks to restore computer to 'factory fresh.'

You forgot Option #4...Don't Sell. There is an addendum to option #1..

And melt the drive.

You'll laugh at me, but...Once, when dealing with a mega paranoid drive, I took it apart, broke the electronics into pieces and broke the platters up with pliers; when I got the glass fragments in my eyes was the first time that I realized that many platters use a glass substrate instead of metal

So, caution alert: WEAR EYE PROTECTION WHEN DESTROYING HARD DRIVE PLATTERS.

Or, leave the drive assembled and use Broni's sledgehammer - then melt the drive!

Solve : I hate Windows Vista!!!?

I got a Dell laptop for Christmas last year and I am having issues with Vista. We tried to take it off and add Windows XP but it didn't work. Does anybody KNOW how to do this? All help is APPRECIATED. You've had Vista for 9 months or so. What sort of problems are you having?

What are your COMPUTER specs: RAM, video card, CPU, etc?You have have problems installing XP on a new computer, theres a good reason for this:
XP is OLD
Yes, Vista is different, but, if you set your MIND to having problems with it, your going to have problems.

What sort of problems are you having? We can try and help you sort them out... but, going back to XP isnt really a great option. If you do want to go back to XP the first step you should take is to visit Dell's site and enter the laptops service tag # and see if there are XP drivers available for EVERY component in the machine...
If so we can proceed.
You will need an official Windows XP CD...copies of all those drivers from the Dell site and some tools for wiping that drive.
In the meantime spend some time backing up any data you need from the laptop and then when you've collected the above post back and we can walk you through it...

Solve : CD/DVD drive.?

Answer»

Gday from OZ,
Just a MINOR problem, but an irritant.
System is Vista Home Premium, 2.0 rating, Pentium DC PU 2.8 Ghz, Ram 1015, 32 bit.
For info, a reminder that I am a computer MORON so any reply would need to be in basic English .
When I insert a flash drive (ancient model, no brand ,62 meg) into the machine it stays mute and does not "autorun" or show a list of the files existing on the flash drive.
To open the thing, one has to go into "my computer", and select the last listed drive shown e.g. "I drive" or go to the navigation pane of an open file, and click on the appropriate drive from there. Not a great drama, but I miss it opening when plugging a flash drive in, as used to occur in XP.
I also have a later flash drive, that does put an icon in the system tray to allow you to open it from there.
DVD's etc will autorun.
Question. Would it be the case that the original flash drive is so old it is not set to self open?
Cheers
H

What format are the two Flash Drives in?Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't know a format if I FELL over it. I inserted the flash drive and right clicked properties and came up with this.
Type-- Removable disc--File System FAT- Capacity 62 mb- disc Drive ST3250620AS - ATA device.
All double dutch to me. (Told you I was a computer moron, but I am trying.)
Hope this helps unscramble it.
Cheers
Henell
PS I have no paperwork or manual for it.Right Click the drive in My Computer and go to Properties.
Then in the Autoplay tab, make sure you select 'Prompt me to make a selection'

I'm assuming this will be kind of pointless in XP, correct?I tried that registry hack on XP, but it didn't work for me.

Solve : Windows Vista blue screening problem?

Answer»

Your processor max TEMP is listed as 61.4° C, so I think, I was right, when I didn't like those mid 40s while idle.
BTW, what is the room temp around your place? Is it hot weather?no idea about the room temp = but at the moment is is not that hot round here - it can get very hot during a sunny day, but no weather like that for at least a week if not more (posting from UK - Suffolk area - that lump on the east side )OK. So let's say, room temp is about average.
My dual core AMD (which is usually little bit hotter, than Intel) with several programs RUNNING, and an average room temperature, is listed at 23C, right now.
Start with cleaning inside, and we'll see from there.Dedusted - though not as much as I WOULD like, I lack a really good point to get into all the tiny gaps - will try to get hold of one. It was also far more dusty in there than I have had before - either its this computer or the fact that my room is far more stuffed with stuff leading to a larger ambiant dust buildup. Ran the computer with the side off and all fans are turning.

temps whilst idle:

system 34C
CPU 29C
AUX 127C
HD0 30C
Core 0 36C
core 1 39C

Some reduction so I think dust is certainly a contributing factor - though with still high temps.Temps WENT down little bit.
Now, try to run IE again, and see what happens.
No error with Opera?
no error with opera - though it is erractic - heat buildup though could be the cause as the computer will run fine for a good while (hours) and then hit a patch of blue screens.
Running IE7 now - will see what happensIf the error occurs again, turn computer off, get a house fan, point it toward open case.
Turn computer on, and try IE again.will do
thanks!I'll be here. And so will I. appoligies for not comming back sooner to reply (lost the link to this place!)
In the end I think this problem is somehow linked to an update from Mircrosoft - I have heard of one or two others who had similar bluescreening problems and then the problem "just went away" or got updated and fixed - I think its also a limited area problem hence why its not more well known about the place - possibly a software and/or hardware configurationCongrats on getting it working.

So exactly what did you do?just kept UPDATING windows as normal. I can't even be sure which or when the update fixed the problem. As long as it's working.

thankyouI don't see Vista drivers listed for your motherboard (http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/gc/gc_drive.htm).

What motherboard drivers did you install after installing Vista? This:
C:\Windows\Minidump\Mini091808-01.dmp
C:\Users\nithesh\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-69812-0.sysdata.xml
C:\Users\nithesh\AppData\Local\Temp\WER68A8.tmp.version.txt
may indicate system files corruption.
Do you have Vista DVD?

I'm also curious about your computer temperatures.
