I put a new memory in and CHECKED it, so it's not that.Sory Packard model UTOW/CUBis this the post beep going crazy? does it go past post? No, the computer won't even begin to boot up. Hi Broni, the pc just beeps continually. I put a new memory in and checked it, so it's not that.

Actually it could be that...how long since it was running properly and is RAM all you've added recently? ?About 6 weeks. I checked the memory using the windows recovery tool in maintenance, it was fine. Also got a firm to check and watched while they did and it was fine. This started after I downloaded Vista Service pack 1 (big mistake I think) though I've uninstalled it and restored the pc and it hasn't helped. Not my point...what RAM did you add and what RAM was already in there ? ?
Most machines want MATCHING RAM to run properly...
Not identical but at least the same speed...SORRY I misunderstood. It's the same RAM , the first one was definitely faulty

I have an acer aspire 3000 lap top. i don't know anything about it except when it comes on after the welcome it goes to a blank blue screen. It won't open in safe mode. I can only get to the dos page but I have no idea what to do with that blinking line. Is there any hope for me.You mentioned you can see the mouse cursor on the chat.

At the blue screen, can you get to the Task Manager when you press CTRL + ALT + Delete at the same time?

If so, start a new process called explorer.exe

What Windows Version is this? (xp, vista, ect...)i am not on that computer. the cursor is the only thing on the blue screen and it won't even start in safe mode. i think it is using xp and i saw something about group 3 or something like that

Can you try my suggestion at all?

Also, when did the problem start?control alt delete dosen't do anything and the problem started 2 days ago it started running slow did a VIRUS scan that fixed EVER so many problems then it restarted and after the welcome screen it is just a blue screen. the cursor is there and it moves but i can't do anything. if i hit f8 during the start i can get to the ms-dos prompt but then i don't know what to do.Hmmmm....What Operating System is this?

Do you have the Windows CD?windows xp home edition and no i don't have the cd. the computer was made for me and they gave me no cd'sCan you borrow a Windows XP Home CD? I think you will need it here.

Is there no option for Safe Mode when you keep pressing F8 on startup?i'm not SURE about the CD but yes there is a place to start in safe mode but when i do it says safe mode in all corners but there is nothing else on the screen except
Microsoft(R)Windows XP(R)(Build 2600.exsp.080413-2111:Service Pack 3) and the screen is blackThat's not right.

When in Safe Mode, can you bring up Task Manager?

If not, you will have to find someone with a Windows XP CD and borrow it.

Once you have it, I suggest performing a Repair Install.
(instructions here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm)
(note: no personal files will be deleted)I forgot this pretty important question.

What HAPPENED before the problem? (downloads, installs, hardware changes, ect...)i think a little of all of the above. my kids had it and told me it just starting running slow. is there any help possible

i have a toshiba LAPTOP with windows xp after some updates were installed it said it needed to restart but when it did it wouldnt go back to windows i tried to reformat the hard drive and install a fresh version of windows xp and it just keeps restarting over and overHow did you try to format the HD?

Did you boot from the Windows CD and format it from there?yes and all it does is say running setup and then restarts againSounds like it could be a overheating issue. When you go into setup does the MACHINE still restart?Go to BIOS and disable all ONBOARD devices not needed for basic install
before attempting the install.

Examples: onboard LAN, Audio, Serial port, Parallel Port, USB.More infomation please, does it load the bois before the restart? - or does the install restart .the only thing on in bios is boot from cd the COMPUTER goes to the black windows xp screec then a blue screen that says setup is being restarted then to a solid blue screen that says----STOP C0000135 {UNABLE TO LOCATE COMPONENTS} THIS APPLICATION HAS FAILED TO START. WINSRV WAS NOT FOUND RE-INSTALL THE APPLICATION MAY FIX THIS PROBLEM. after this is when it restarts. i've tried a new windows xp and vista disc and neither will work Just to make sure, are you sure you are booting from the CD?

Solve : My computer shuts itself off?

Answer»

My computer randomly shuts itself off, i don't get any error messages, all i get is (when i reboot my computer) it tells me that the computer was not properly shut down. I need help. I just built my computer a few days AGO and this problem has occurred a few times, twice while running 3D mark 05. So i uninstalled that program, but today it shut it self off with no warning while i was on the internet. i have a EVGA 780i MOBO, a Core 2 Quad Q9300, SLI 2 EVGA 9600 GT, a 800 Watt PSU, a 7200rpm HDD, 4 80mm Fans and a heat sink with no CPU fan on it, and i am running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. Can anyone help me FIGURE this out?Sounds like an over heating CPU. Did you check the adhesive that bonds the heatsink/cooling fan? You usually have to LOOSEN the cpu straps and if the heat sink is moving then you should take it off, clean and re-apply some thermal adhesive.

It may be the power, but usually when a power SUPPLY goes its gone.

Solve : internet connection on vista?

Answer»

when i try to connect to internet, message appears diagnose connection problems then turn on wireless capability then i can connect.how can i fix to connect STRAIGHT away Did you call your ISP?no i thought it was something to do with my laptop not the ispYou're right. It is your computer, not your ISP.

I've actually seen this problem on my aunt's laptop running Vista with no Service Pack. Apparently, her Internet connection got dropped in the MIDDLE of installing updates, which corrupted every update from then on out (including a hardware update for her wireless card). From that POINT on, she had to do, like you do now, "diagnose" connection problems, and then the wireless would work.

From there I tried to install Vista Service Pack 1. Service Pack 1 craps out about 3/4 of the way before the reboot into Stage 1. I tried to repair the corrupt updates--didn't work. Finally, I just backed up her data and reformatted, installed SP1 immediately afterward, reinstalled her APPS, and restored her data. Works fine now. To install ANY Windows service packs, one has to be 100% sure, the computer is clean. Thanks for the advice unfortunately you lost me once you started on reformatting etc I,m not not very good at computers as you may have guessedIn a nutshell: reformat = wipe everything and start over from when the computer was first purchased.thanks killerB i will try that.regards taxidriverI usually don't like giving that as advice, but sometimes the real solution to the problem is either too time-consuming, can potentially cause other problems, or that there is no existing real solution.

If Vista RTM's Windows Updater jacks up, Microsoft does have a tool for logging the updates that get corrupted, but when there are several corrupt updates, repairing all of those can be a pain...and even then, there's no guarantee that SP1 will even install or that the drivers for the wireless card will work properly to fix the original issue...

So if you're going to reformat, go ahead and do so (back up your data first!). Once Vista is reinstalled, IMMEDIATELY put SP1 on it! I find that its Windows Updater is a lot more stable...

Solve : recovering files from laptop?

Answer»

I have a sony viao laptop that has crashed and the guys told me that the hard drive had crashed. The operating system is windows vista. How can I recover the files on the hard drive? I have another laptop that runs windows XP if that may help somehow.
Grab one of these from any Computer store:

2.5" laptop HDD to IDE converter...
This will allow you to hook up the drive to any WORKING desktop MACHINE and retrieve your data...
Be prepared ahead of time...you may only get one shot at it.So what do I do, take the old hard drive out from the laptop, and then hook this adaptor up to the hardrive? Then I just plug in the USB to my other computer right?

Can I do the recovery by hooking up a laptop from a HD on a laptop(that had Vista) to a
laptop that run XP?

And do most of these laptops have regular IDE drives or do some of them have other drives?
Laptop HDD's are smaller than regular HDD's...
A HDD from another laptop will not boot properly in another laptop...that's why this is a wasted step and it should be hooked to a desktop system instead...
It doesn't hook up via USB...it uses a regular IDE HDD connector. The white plug is the power connector right, and the other end is the connector that plugs into the drive correct? How then do I transfer the data?

I was thinking also that if I got a 2.5 inch hard disk enclosure, then couldnt I put the HD (from the vista laptop) into the enclosure, and then plug the other end of the cable (that has the usb plug) into the USB ort on my XP laptop? Would that work
You're making this more complicated than it is...
The cable SHOWN is about 6 bucks...you certainly cannot get an enclosure for that price.
In the image yes the white plug is the Molex(power) connector...the other connector HOOKS both to the laptop drive and an IDE cable as a slave...

When rescuing Data i simply don't trust a USB connection but i'm old fashioned so yes your method would work...
Good Luck.youre right the cable is a lot cheaper. And if I find it in a store Ill get that. But I dont really want to open a desktop and have to fiddle about with the power and whatnot. In any case, I see how the moleconnector goes to the power. But does the other end hook up to the HD, and if so what do I connect to the IDE cable

Oh I get it, one side of the long connector hooks up to the HD and the other side is where the IDE cable hooks in , right? Sorry I have never seen this component before, so I didnt know.

But one more thing I wanted know is, is it possible for a machine that runs XP to read files from a drive that was on a machine that ran vista. Is there any problem with the file system.
No...no problem at all.
Unless of course the XP machine was formatted FAT32 which won't read NTFS ( Vista )what is the difference between ESATA and SATA hd? And are there just the three types of HD's: ESATA, SATA and PATA or IDE

Apparently the PATA interface doesnt FIT the SATA HDs and vic e versa

Solve : hard disk keeps losing space?

Answer»

Operating Vista on dual-boot (Ubuntu) lenovo with 104 gig hard drive. The free space on the HD keeps decreasing even after running disk cleanup and uninstalling PROGRAMS I don't need. I used to have about 50% free, now down to 20%. I ALSO use Mozy virtual back up. Ubuntu is running as a Windows app but only takes up about 15 gigs. I'm mystified ???.

Thanks for any ideas. Not sure what Mozy Virtual BackUp is do you think this may be the problem here?
PERHAPS it is constantly making backups and using your disk space.Mozy is a virtual b/u so it does not b/u on the HD. The program itself is about 17 MB. Thanks for looking though. BTW, Mozy will b/u up to 2 GB for free.

Thanks,

CHECK the volume for errors. Right click on it> properties>tools>check now. Thats all I can think of.Any Norton products on this machine ?
When did this start ?
What protection apps do you have and when were the last scans ?

Indexing service turned on in Vista ?

The more info provided the less guesswork on this end...Mozy is an online backup service.
This can help....

http://www.advexsoft.com/disk_space_inspector/disk_space_inspector_overview.html

They have a free trial. I think you will find that the backups are whats taking up your space. But until you run a reporting tool on folder sizes we won't know for sure.

Please tell us whether you also cleared the System Restore Points and Shadow Copies when you did the Disk Cleanup and removed unneeded programs.

I’ve noticed the same gradual loss of free space on my Vista machine and could often regain many gigabytes by clearing these automatically generated files.
The option to clear these files seems to be available only if you chose to run Disk Cleanup for all users of the computer instead of for only your own files.

Restore Points and Shadow Copies are valuable, so you may want to keep them, but they do build up in size.

Solve : Windows Search 4.0?

Thanks, that's what I suspected which is why I haven't downloaded it. I assume that your answer is for XP, any idea what it does for Vista?I believe there was a security update that actually removed it, at first. Kirk, Windows search sucks, no matter what.
Yeah, and I don't want a "search bar." And I suspected that in XP it would add a search bar; but, my recollection is that Windows Search 4.0 is also offered for Vista - what does it do in Vista?I don't know. I try to stay away from M$ add-ons as far, as possible. What do you mean by I don't want a "search bar."?I just booted into Vista, checked Windows Update and don't show it as a 'hidden' update - maybe I went ahead and downloaded it for Vista because Vista already has the search function.

I don't want a search bar or search function on my task bar. I also don't want the endless indexing, although, I must admit that I don't notice it with Vista. There was Vista update regarding search, but I don't remember, if it was called Search 4.0
Quote

If you're referring to SuperFinder, it's none of those. It just installs under right click menu (index), and it doesn't do any indexing,In XP, it add a "Search" field to the left of the system tray.

This doesn't happen in Vista because Vista already has the "Search" option in the Start Menu. It just simply updates the existing Windows Search.More info: http://windowsvistablog.com/blogs/windowsvista/archive/2008/03/27/announcing-the-windows-search-4-0-preview.aspx

Windows Search 4.0 introduces several improvements I'd like to call out making search even better in Windows Vista:

* With Windows Search 4.0, the Windows Search Team has fixed most of the reported bugs causing a majority of distractions users have seen since Windows Vista RTM - many of those bugs were reported by you.
* Great improvements have been made with regards to performance.Even now as Preview, Windows Search 4.0 has query response time about 33%faster than search queries in Windows Vista RTM.
* The Windows Search Team has extended Remote Index Discovery for PC-to-PC search to work onevery supported version of Windows. This makes finding information on other PCs running Windows Search 4.0 quick and less resource-consuming. Now Windows Search can find information shared on a remote PC by accessing an index on that PC - and you will open FILES only when relevant to your search. This will also work if the user's profile is redirected.
* The Windows Search Team has implemented Rollback Recovery where your search index will roll back to the last known good state (this is good in handling disc write errors). If an error occurs, your index isn't rebuilt from scratch; only the newly changed files are added to the index, making recovery from system errors not as disruptive to the machine or the user

Being able to find files isn't just important to consumers - it is also important to IT Professionals managing enterprise environments. The Windows Search Team has made some improvements in Windows Search 4.0 that IT Professionals should take note of:

* We have improved performance when indexing Exchange in online mode, sending fewer PACKETS and making less RPC calls. In this process we apply significantly less load on the Exchange server too.
* Support for Group Policy settings is extended and improved; per-user policy is supported now.
* We now support EFS - Windows Search 4.0 will index encrypted files, and user can search for them in the sane UI and through the same user experience as seen with regular, unencrypted files.

Disregard pep-talk sections...LOLQuote from: Broni on September 14, 2008, 06:36:28 PM

Solve : Saving to two devices Simultaneously?

Answer»

Hi everyone: I’m trying to figure out how to save a Word DOCUMENT or an image file to an external drive while saving to the internal drive simultaneously. Is there a way to accomplish this? I am using Windows XP PRO and either MS Word or PHOTOSHOP CS3. System specs: Dell XPS; Pentium (D) R; 3.2GZ; 4GB RAM; saving to a Seagate external HD. Thank you. I don't think that this can be done. Not the way your thinking that is....

You can use a program LIKE this....

http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/

and setup the 2 folders to be in "sync" this way when you write to one folder the program will copy the files to another place in the background.

I've never used it, but you may want to test this: RapidCopy

As with any software downloads...make sure you scan it with your malware software before installing. Also make sure you read the installation instructions carefully.

By the way...it's compatible with XP and Vista.

Solve : Unable to use mass storage device vis USB?

Answer»

A few weeks ago, I plugged my flash memory into the USB to back up some data as I had done every day. But, I got this message: The heading is: Restriction Warning.
Administrator has prohibited access to USB/1394 mass storage device.

If I continue and try to back up/restore I get this message:
Windows Explorer
G:\is not accessible. Access denied.

I have no idea where this came from and have been unable to circumvent it. Since then I have been unable to back up or restore any data.

The flash memory works perfectly fine in my lap top and other computers.

By the way, FYI--I am BARELY computer literate.
Thanks for your help.Welcome to the CH forums.

This seems to be a known Acer problem but it's very very difficult for us to do very much diagnostic work if you don't tell us what we're dealing with. Please read this and/or this.

You are right. It is an Acer .
I am running Windows XP Pro 5.1
Version 2002
Service Pack 3 (whatever this means)

It's an Acer Pentium R
CPU 3.0ghz

This problem came up about 2 months ago, and I think it coincided with a brief power failure that occurred due to a storm.

I use CA virus, anti spyware, firewall protection as well Microsoft virus, spyware and firewall protection.

I also have the free versions of Spybot and Adaware. These free versions have been on my computer for years.

Some friends suggested I restore my system back to a date prior to this problem happening. I am not sure what this would entail and how it would effect my existing programs and data.

I have all of my business info backed up on the flash drive as I am using my laptop (Acer Aspire) for my business. Initially, I was using the desk top Acer for my work stuff, backing up onto the flash drive and restoring the info onto my lap top. Therefore my desk top and lap top had the identical info. If I was traveling I could continue to do my work on the lap top and I would then transfer that data to my desk top. This way they were both always indentical.

I hope this gives you enough info to give me some help.
Thanks. Thanks for all that very clear info. Your problem appears the be associated with Acer Lanscope. Below is a reported cure:

Quote

A function called Acer Lanscope had an icon on the bottom line. This offers the information that USB storage devices, Cds, DVDs etc were all 'locked'. I could find no way of accessing this program to change the settings so uninstalled the function via Add or Remove programs option in Control Panel.

Here is a MS Technet forum discussion on the problem and altho' it REFERS specifically to Vista I think it will also apply to XP. Please read all of the contris before DECIDING if you want to use the ACER Elock Utility.

Please post back with your results for future reference.

BTW Spybot and Adaware have been updated!! If you System Restore to way-back-when you may be unable to run programs INSTALLED since then due to re-writing registry entries.

Good luckThanks for the help. I removed Acer Lanscope, that did not work. I screwed around with the Acer E-Lock, that did not work. I restored the system to a date I thought all was working well--THAT WORKED !!! Yea..

Looks like for the time being I am back in business as far as using my USB ports. I'm just wondering when will it crap out again. It seems this is an Acer problem.

But, that USELESS Incredi-mail Icon is still showing up. I swear it's screwing up the booting up process. Any ideas on how to get rid of this Icon. I don't have the program installed--only this darn Icon keeps showingup.

Thanks again for the help.Quote

Good news, and yes, it's an Acer problem but Acer has been less than helpful in continuing to fail to issue a fix for it.

Incredimail used to be a well supported program but fell into disuse when advertising became its main function, or so it seemed. Getting rid of it has become a major trial. One of these might help. Here's Microsoft on the subject.

As an aside, I recommend using the Revo uninstaller instead of Add/Remove programs as Revo will search Folders and the Registry and present options to delete entries.

Good luck.

We have loads of users who log there PCs onto domain A.
Are you talking about User Accounts?

Yes. Each user logs on to the server under their own user account on there own PC.What exactly do you want to do?Do you want to grant the domain group:

A\Backup Operators

local admin rights on the PCs?

Do this:

In 2000, XP, and Vista:

Start -> CONTROL Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Local Users and Groups -> Groups -> Double-click "Administrators" -> Add -> type in A\Backup Operators -> click OK -> Close Computer Management and everything else -> restart computer.

Rinse and repeat for the other PCs as appropriate.

Solve : Turn Tooltips off??

Answer»

We all know these

Is there any way to turn it off? I mean really, do we need to be told what they are for? This is for XP, but would like to do the same for Vista.I don't think so.

Why do you WANT to turn them off?Open Windows Explorer, then Tools > Folder Options > View, and uncheck "Show popup descriptions ETC... " near the bottom of the list. Click "Apply to all folders".

Maybe Doc Jellybean, like me, FINDS them irritating and non-informative...Regedit at MS KB307729 will stop all balloon tips.

Solve : Windows customisation.?

Answer»

I feel as though i've RUN out of things to customise in windows! Here is a few of the more obscure things i'm running:

Launchy
EmergeDesktop
Vista Logon studio

One of my goals is to make it as easy not to use the mouse at all. unfortunately you need the mouse for using webpages.

How AWESOME would it be to have a live webcam as your background.....

Here is a screenshot of my DESKTOP:

FB

EDIT: because i'm not using explorer you can't click the background or anything, the only way to do anything is to use launchy, or some other hotkeys.

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]Need sunglasses =>

LOL nice. Heh nice. I was looking for some recommendations from other people who like to customise windows? I'm going to check out nlite soon see how far i can get with that, but if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to post them here.

FBI installed WinLogic Visual Styler before on my PC - I got with a magazine - and it NEARLY wiped out my laptop. I don't know why, but I had to do a system restore to get it to work again.

So that's why I'll never try customising it again! I don't use any graphic customisations at all because I like things simple.
Winblinds tends to get a lot of negative press, causing instability and crashes, so I would say to steer clear of that.
I used to use Stardock BOOTSKIN which never caused me any issues, handy tool to change your boot screen.yer simple is always good, if you couldn't guess from my desktop! i think Bootskin is the XP version of vista logonstudio.

Solve : Code Purple Error?

Answer»

On my uncle's HP Pavilion a1600n(running windows XP media center edition), he recently got a code purple error after reinstalling windows with the manufacturers cds. I looked around and I found a good bit of information on it, but none of the WORK-a rounds could fix it. Now I could send it to HP, but it isn't under warranty, and I read that they charge you to just talk to a technician. My main question is, is it possible to go out and buy a fresh copy of windows and install it to never have this issue again? On a more specific note, would this (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2552182&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs),
work? Any pointers or help would be greatly appreciated! You may want to read here: http://www.billoblog.com/?p=152Yea, that was the first place I started when I found the error. It was very useful, but like some of the others on there, I couldn't find the files. I CHECKED through DOS with the ultimate boot disk they mentioned.

hi ,
we gotten a code purple too after restore on a a335w twice, called HP, said the MOTHERBOARD was dead, i told her that it was working fine before, then she said it had to be ‘tatooed’ , i told her ill get back to the HP girl later when i figured what to do,
looking in on google, found YUO guys too, i figured the best way was to install a fresh new windows XP, we went to Staples and got the xp upgrade,( i had the 98 cd to be the back up when doing the clean install )using my windows 98 boot i fdisk and deleted that restore partion and the NTFS partion part, and then created the whole harddrive as a partion, reset computer then formated c: from the 98 boot still in it,,
after all that, a fresh install via boot from cd,,
and this computer works great! seeming better and faster then before!

i guess the money we spend on a new XP cd , we could have gotton a Vista, but im not ready to take it on becouse of the mostly negitive stuff i HEARD about it,
maybe doing all this would be better in the long run, saving time and maybe money instead from having somebody “repair” your computer,

Solve : partitioning in vista?

Answer»

i am having single hard drive 200gb which has vista. i would like to install windows xp also. i WANTED to know whether i can PARTITION this single drive to two drives(100gb each) without removing vista..You're asking for trouble, putting two OS's on a single HD.
It's much better to just use two HD's. I'm doing that now on three systems of my own.

But yes, you CAN REPARTITION a Vista drive without damaging Vista.

I just did it a few days ago on a Vista drive of my own. I used "Partition Magic 8".
It worked like a charm. I CREATED a "Storage" partition for misc. data and Ghost backup files.

First you have to reduce the size of the Vista partition, which leaves "Free Space".
Then you have to "Create" a new drive in the 'Free Space'.

Everything must be done in precise order or you can wind up with a NON-Booting HD.

Proceed with Caution!

Solve : Issue with Vista screen -- flickering?

Answer»

Hi everyone,

So my roommate is having some trouble with laptop (HP Pavilion dv6000, OS: Windows Vista). She logged on this morning and her screen begin to flicker off and on. She automatically turned it off (manually). Now, when she turns the computer back on, nothing HAPPENS except all the KEYBOARD lights light up indicating that it actually powered up. (No, you can't LOG on in Safe Mode -- nothing happens.)

She'll be taking her computer to BEST Buy tonight, but in the meantime, if anyone has any suggestions, it'd be great to save a trip.Is the laptop under warranty? No, she isn't.

However, we managed to get the problem fixed -- it was a simple matter of her external monitor being activated. Thanks for posting back

It seems to happen alot with Yahoo sports sites, but then, I'm on there site a lot, too. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Mike1) Clear the Browser cache. From within IE: Tool>Delete Browsing History, Delete All; also, select "Delete files and settings stored by add-ons." Close and re-start IE.

2) If 1) doesn't help, try IE in No Add-ons Mode: Start>type Internet Explorer in the search box>select IE (No Add-ons).

3) If 1 & 2 don't help, reset IE: Start IE>Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>under Reset IE, select Reset.

Solve : Unable to get on the internet?

Answer»

I just bought an HP laptop running Vista. I am able to connect to the wireless network but when I try to get on the internet, I receive an ERROR STATING the DNS could not find the Website. I am trying to get onto AOL and Yahoo. If I am able to get on the internet, I am usually kicked off with a few minutes. I never LOSS the network connection. I have a desktop on the same network that does not lose the internet connection. I have Verizon DSL and use a Linksys router. I have contacted HP, Verizon, and Linksys and no one seems to know what the problem is. I have even trying a system restore with no luck. I have checked the drivers on the laptop and one has an ! next to it, but when I try to download UPDATES, it tells me that everything is up to date. I am unable to download anything from HP as the computer will not allow me to stay on the internet for long enough. I am also unable to have any tech support remote access the computer for the same reason. This is the second laptop that I have purchased in the past 2 weeks and I experienced this problem with both laptops. I have done everything tech support has advised. I went to the Vista website and tried their suggestions as well. Has anyone experienced this? Any suggestions on how to correct this problem? What is the Exclamation Mark next to? Is it the same for both computers?

You said that both computers have the same problem. Is there any other computer you can test it with?

Also, to MAKE sure it's not a problem with the computer itself, can you test them somewhere else with internet?

Solve : Problems with partitions?

Answer»

Hy!

I am new here and I need a little help. I HOPE you guys can help me out.
I have buyed a new computer, but it was having Linux installed with Linux partitions.
I have reformatted one of them in NTFS and installed Windows, but I don't KNOW what I have to do next.
I don't know what is with the SWAP file thing. I have to leave a 2GB partition for swap file? Or what?
And I want the 20GB one to be C, not E.
I don't like Paragon Partition Manager, it seems a little dumb. Is there any way I can do these with just Windows bootable CD?

Do you intend to keep Linux?
Is Windows functional?
What version of Windows do you have?
Are you experiencing errors?
You asked about a 2GB partition for a swap file. For what operating system?

You can change the drive letter assignment by going to (in Windows XP) Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management. The same tool also works in Vista, but I can't remember where it resides.

"Is there any way I can do these with just Windows bootable CD?" What are the these of which you speak? No, I don't want Linux.
Yes, Windows is functional, but is SP1, I just put it in 'till I find out what is with the partitions. I don't intend to keep it.
No, I don't have any errors. All works fine.
I understand now that the SWAP file is for Linux, is not needed for Windows.
These is changing partitions. I want C partition with 22GB and D partition with 130GB.Personally i would partition it as you want it FORMAT and re-install....re-assigning drive letters is fine after you have a working system but in this case you don't...

22G may be stingy for Vista...

Solve : No display once windows has started.?

Answer»

Hey. I got an Ati graphics card. The software i USE for it is called catalyst control center. One day i changed the display setting to tv and plugged my computer into the tv. It was fine until i changed the setting back to monitor and turned off my computer. Now there is no display for tv or monitor. I can see the boot and everything until windows starts up, then everything disappears as if the monitor goes on standby. I can see stuff when im in safe mode. I have tried system restore and i have tried to uninstall catalyst control center then reinstall but i cant uninstall it in safe mode. Also there is nothing in my startup folder and i tried disabling ati services in sysconfig.

Thanks for your time.

Btw im using vista.Quote

i tried disabling ati services in sysconfig.
First, re-enable these.

What Operating System is this?

What did you do when you were connected with the TV? (downloads, installs, ECT...)Services renabled.

Im using vista.

I played a game (worms 4 mayhem). Then i switch my settings back to monitor before turning off the computer. When did you try to restore to?

Also, in Safe Mode, Go to Start --> RUN --> type msconfig and press Enter
When you get to msconfig, click the Startup Tab and uncheck as many programs as you can (except antivirus software)
Press OK and see how this goes.I RESTORED to about a month ago (the restore point was the installation of a game). I dont have antivirus cause that computer isnt connected to the internet. Ill try what you said now.All right.

Also, if this doesn't work, run System Restore again but restore to a few days ago.Ok. Problem fixed. I disabled the services the restarted my computer. It was still black screen. I pressed ctrl alt delete and my gfx card fan turned on to the speed i set them to. After that i plugged my monitor into the second monitor port and it worked. The weird thing is it didnt work when i tried to swap ports before system restore. WELL at least the problem is fixed, now im gonna have to reinstall a few games though . THanks for the help! All right, glad it's working.

Solve : Vista Task Scheduler and other tools won't start!?

Answer»

I have Vista Basic x64. In Administrative Tools, I cannot get Task Scheduler, Event Viewer, Disk Management and Windows Firewall to open correctly. Actually they do eventually open, but not until a window pops up that's says "Adding snap-in console".

All of the other tools like SERVICES, Memory Diagnostics etc, open up just fine. Before I did a couple of System Restores, I was STILL having this problem and I read where I needed to have Windows Event log running for these tools to work. See I had turned it off.

So I re-enabled it and it solved the problem. But this time, Windows Event Log is already enabled, so I don't know what ELSE to do.

I tried playing a bit with the Microsoft Management Console, however I have little experience in working with it. Also when I opened it up the first time, there were no snap-ins present. So, I clicked on "Add/Remove Snap-In". At that point, a list came up in the left pane that listed all of the available snap-ins. Then I just added the ones that would not open for me. The ones listed above.

Funny thing though, when I went to enter the first snap-in, another window came up
that asked me "What computer do you want this snap-in to manage"? And there were two options, "This computer", which was already checked, or "The following computer". And greyed-out on that was MAINSYSTEM, which is the name of my computer

So I stuck with "This Computer", though one time I went the other route and checked "The following computer", just to see if that would help. It didn't. So then I continued to add the other tools that were not working. And each time that "Select computer..." option would come up.

Anyway when I got all four of them in the RIGHT pane, I closed MMC, but not before it asked me to SAVE what did. Then I rebooted and tried to open Tash Scheduler and others, but the same thing happened.

It's funny but I read in the MMC Help, that I should add a snap-in in a totally different way. Here's just some of what it said:

To create a new snap-in console from within MMC 3.0, do one of the following:
From within a snap-in console, on the File menu, click New. At a command line, type mmc /a. etc etc

First of all when I clicked "New" it didn't do anything but just open up Console2. Also, I don't know what it means about entering that info in the command line. What command line?

So regardless if I did this process right or wrong, none of the settings ever seemed to stick. I would close out MMC, then reopen it, and nothing was there in the right pane. None of the tools that I entered. That is until I went to file and opened up the file I saved. Then they were all there. But is that the way it's supposed to work?

I'm lost! And contemplating a reformat!

Solve : My right click has lost its send to compresssed file function.?

Answer»

Hi,
I tried to compress a folder a little while ago by right clicking the mouse and selecting the send to compressed file option, but it was not there in the menu. Is there any way I can get it back?

I am running Windows XP SP2.

ThanksWhat did you do before this problem started?

You didn't download any other software, did you?I'm not sure when it all started.

I probably did download some programs.

Sorry I can't be a little more PRECISE but I haven't used the function for a LONG time.

I can still create new zip files by right-clicking in an empty space and selecting new/zip file, but only from an administrator account.

Is there a quick fix for this one? There is no really quick fix for ADDING an ITEM back to a context menu that I know of - I know a couple, but it's a very involved procedure and a little risky (involves RegEdit). However, if I can be bold enough to make a suggestion, try 7-zip. It adds a context menu for adding files to archives. It's a bit more complicated, in that it has more options, but you probably will only ever use this one:

Or the one below, which is even faster ("Add to 'filename.zip'")Cheers!

7-Zip seems to be a good work around for the problem.

I would like to restore the send to option though!

Has anyone got any ways of doing this? I don't mind dealing with the registry (I'm either very foolish or very brave!).

Thanks

but, that being SAID- you might just need to re-register the zipped folders library.

not sure about Vista- but in XP, I know the zipped folders DLL is zipfldr.dll- re-registering it (which most likely adds the send to option as well) would involve running the command "regsvr32 zipfldr.dll"

on the other hand- I've heard there are problems with regsvr32 on Vista...Hi,
Yep, that worked thanks.

I used the command: -

regsvr32 zipfldr.dll

and, hey presto, my send to/compresssed (Zipped) Folder menu option returned.

Cheers Glad to hear it worked!

Solve : disappearing task bar??

Answer»

Hello,

I'm running Windows XP, SP2 on a Dell laptop. Just recently, my task bar (with the start menu to the left and the clock and ...ect on the right, incase of confusion) just disappeared. The bar will show during start-up after a reboot or whatever but disappears soon after. I believe it's a piece of malicious software or something but i've run full scans with Ad-Aware 6, S&D, and AVG as well and I've got nothing in return. Its very frustrating and I'm not sure as to why this happening...

Here is a screen shot:

http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/4530/desktopmp6.jpg

ANY help would be appriciated greatly. Thanks!does it show up if you run your mouse along the BOTTOM of the screen?I have mine set that way on purpose, so its likely that the settings were changed and not anything malicious. If the task bar appears when you mouse over it, then it has been set to auto hide. Mouse over it then right click and select properties, then check to see if "auto-hide the taskbar" is checked. If it is, and you don't want it to be, then un-check it and hit apply.I've checked to make sure auto-hide isn't on. I have it set on always up usually. I checked nonetheless with every combination and nothing. I've included a second screenshot to illustrate this:

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/9408/desktop2rf1.jpg

As you can see, if I hit the windows key, the start menu pops up -- without the bar. Hey, R6 Vegas, great game . Anyway, that's strange. Have you tried changing resolutions, just out of curiosity, or manually adjusting the screen size with the monitor controls? Just tried different resolutions, nothing.

This really sucks because it seems like I'll have to wipe my system...Well I wouldn't go to that extreme just yet. Just keep this topic bumped and eventually one of the real smart veterans will respond. One other thing I just thought of, and forgive me if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but did you check to see if the taskbar was collapsed? If it was then it wouldn't APPEAR at all. Move the mouse to the bottom of the screen and if you see the little two headed arrow, then just click and drag it up and it should be there. The only thing that would stop you from doing that would be if the taskbar is locked, so you'd have to unlock it first. If those don't work, then I'm out of ideas...Any response is better than no response. Thank you for your time!

Uninstall any add-on toolbars you have including but not limited to google and yahoo...

I've uninstalled google toolbar but hasn't done anything yet...

Although its interesting that you mention this because the problem started when my sister apparently installed something that I thought was a virus or malware. I found the yahoo tool bar on IE7 but got rid of it soon after. I never related the two however. What effect do these applications have in regards to the taskbar, if you don't mind me asking? How did you remove the Yahoo toolbar ? ?

In answer to your other question they are just poorly WRITTEN apps.Quote from: patio on August 17, 2007, 05:20:49 AM
How did you remove the Yahoo toolbar ? ?

In answer to your other question they are just poorly written apps.

I went through the control panel and searched for them in Add/Remove Programs and uninstalled through that. I've just quickly skimmed through the registry data and it seems like there are still some logs of yahoo even after deletion. Any significance of this?Download the Slim version of CCleaner and run it's Issue scan; that may remove some of that stuff from the registry. When you run the scan, it will prompt you to backup your registry. Do so, and then tell CCleaner to remove all that it finds. Repeat the scan, since it may find ADDITIONAL items upon a repeat scan.

I also suggest running CCleaner's Windows and/or Applications scan. It's a good disk cleanup utility.

I have had this problem myself so I send this information that is sure to help everyone that has this same problem with the disappearing taskbar. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, & have noticed my taskbar disappearing from time to time the last couple of weeks. I searched the web until I found the topic of "The Mystery of The Disappearing Taskbar" at http://www.windowsvistaplace.com/the-mystery-of-the-disappearing-taskbar/ . If you follow the short instruction to the letter, you'll get your taskbar back up & running in no time. best thing is, you don't have to restart your computer. I'm sure this will help everyone.

Solve : unwanted icons?

Answer»

I am RUNNING Vista on an E Machine. On my screen I have 2 icons. They are both: " desktop.ini". When I open them they both show what appears to me to be some KIND of CODED program but they are different. When I try to delete them I get a message that warns me not to. I do not want to delete any thing that is important but I would like to get them off my screen. I have no idea how they got there, I probably clicked on something I should not have. I do that sometimes. Can somebody tell me how to get them off the screen without losing them? ThanksOpen up Windows Explorer and then drag them into the Windows/system32 folder.

[Saving space - attachment deleted by admin]I am recalling this post to tell you how my problem was solved. The unwanted icons was not my real problem. My C disk was full and apparently nothing worked. I contacted E Machines and they could not help the situation so they suggested a factory restart. When they gave me the factory restart it put me back to when I purchased the computer. I then spent about three hours upgrading and getting things in order. Everything is fine now. Now if I can just keep from clicking on things I don't know about I will be OK.

Solve : Vista: System Restore not working?

I am using Vista Business.

I need to restore my system to the state it was in yesterday morning (having FOOLISHLY downloaded a program which created a Z: drive). When I run System Restore it goes through the motions, reboots, ETC., but finally tells me that "System Restore did not complete SUCCESSFULLY. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details: An unspecified error occurred during System Restore".

This is not a new problem. I have needed to use System Restore a number of times over the last year but always got the same message. I have tried different restore POINTS without success.Have you tried the system restore in Safe Mode?Try to run it from Safe Mode.Got beaten by 2 minutes....LOLBetter late than never, Broni, my friend... Thanks, I did what you suggested and it worked!Glad to hear it...

Solve : Why is Vista Bad??

Answer»

So I'm building myself a new computer, I've always used XP, and was wondering why Vista is supposedly so bad? If any of you'll could help me out on deciding it would help me out alot.

Here's some of the specs if they might help:

CPU- Intel Core 2 Duo PROCESSOR E8600 (2x 3.33GHz/6MB L2 Cache/1333FSB)

Mobo- Asus P5KPL-CM Intel G31 Chipset w/6-channels, Gb LAN, S-ATA 3Gb/s, USB 2.0, Single PCI-E
MB

2 GB [1 GB X2] DDR2-800 PC6400

Video Card- NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT 512mb

500gb hard drive

550 watt PSU

Vista is "Bad" because it's different. Sure, it has it's nuances, but so did XP when it came out.

Not that I'm using it. I'm stubborn. But at least I recognize my problem- also my computer is too slow for it.

I recommend the same thing some people did when all the other Windows versions came out- Dual boot between your current ver and the new one. Eventually, you'll spend all your time in the new one, and can simply remove the old one. That machine will run Vista fine...
If you are unsure you have the option of setting up a dual-boot XP/Vista system...

If you are unsure you have the option of setting up a dual-boot XP/Vista system...
Post back if you would like details on this...

More on this please...

There are numerous ways of accomplishing this but first a set of Guidelines:

1) For the BEST results both should be a brand new clean install with the older OS being installed first.
2) It can be done on seperate partitions on one drive but the cleanest method is for XP to be installed on one physical drive and Vista installed on another.
3) Any programs you install on XP will need to also be installed on the Vista drive/partition...NOTE: some will run without being installed on both OS's but for the most trouble-free setup it's best to do it on both.
4) Official MS CD's should be used for the best setup. This eliminates all the issues that come with using 'ahem" versions of the OS's...if you plan on doing this i'd suggest looking elsewhere because i don't have the patience to try and fix issues with bogus versions of software.

So decide whether you want this all on one drive or 2 seperate drives...give some THOUGHT to partitions/sizes AHEAD of time if you are installing on one drive as it's far easier to do it from the git go.
Let me know.

Solve : OHGODOHGOD Vista won't start up. Please help!?

Answer»

All my work was on it, and I really need it, the worst part was that I was just about to backup!!

I start up, VISTA says it's loading files, and then I can choose normal start or startup repair. Whatever I choose, after a long wait i come to a blue screen. With system repair options. I can also choose a variety of other options, including system restore - which tells me it can't work because the computer is offline.

I choose startup repair, and it cannot fix anything. I look at the log? It tells me this:

Everything is fine, apart from the REGISTRY is corrupt.
It tried registry roll back and it failed. Code 8x3e7
It also says load key failed error 999 STHIVEHO

I am on vista home pro, 2gb ram, er 2mz processer AMD, hp pavillion.

Before this happened, I ended Desktop Window Manager DWM, iin the processes, I know it was a stupid thing to do but my laptop was really slow, and I thought it was to do with aero, so at worst it should just STOP all the pretty effects? I blame it on having the flu.

But for about 5 minutes after I ended that it was fine!

Also for half an HOUR before my laptop was really really slow, more so than usual.

I downloaded 3 programs. 2 FLV players and one FLV converter. I can find the names if you need.

I also torrented a lot, but hadn't opened any of that yet.

Is there anything else I should tell you that would help?

Thanks so so so much, I really hope I can get my work back!!!Do you have Vista DVD?I do not have a cd. BUT on the back of my laptop there's some licence sticker with a key on it.

If I torrent it onto a cd then I should be able to use this key I guess?

Also yesterday I went to hp selfcheck from bios. And it told me the hard drive needed to be replaced.Find out the manuf. of that hard drive and get the Free diagnostics from the drive manuf. site...follow the instructions on creating a bootable diagnostic CD and run the long test...
If you're going to torrent Vista you will probably wind up with at least twice as many issues as you have now.
Let's find out the STATUS of the drive for now...For HD diagnostic, check here: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

Solve : returning pc to original format?

Answer»

Hi Guys, have Zoostorm pc with windows 7 preinstalled no actual disc ,I might have a virus on my pc in the PAST if all else failed I would have reformatted the hard DRIVE and started again but now the soft WARE has its own recovery system which is supposed to take it back to how it came to me but will this work if there is a virus on it?
thanks ,jabbaUnless it is a boot sector virus (which is relatively rare) yes, returning to as-shipped will eliminate the infection. It should be FINE...look up the Factory Restore info at the manuf. site...
Done properly it wipes the entire drive (C:\) and restores the PC to Day 1 status...

Note: You will lose all data and installed apps in this...so backup ACCORDINGLY.

Solve : File checking system??

Answer»

I turned my computer on this morning and found the following page...I did not get to complete everything it said, but I got most of it. I have never seen this before, ever. Can you TELL me what it means? Do I need to do something?

CHECKING file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.

One of your disks NEEDS to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended that you continue.
Windows will now check the desk.

CHKDSK is verifying files (1 of 3)
406592 file recording processed
939 large file records processed
0 bad file records processed
0 EA records processed
69 reparse records processed

CHKDSK is verifying indexes
463964 file

And that's as far as I got when it changed to normal Vista and I could continue

Should I be concerned over this? I just ran a complete Virus Scan. I use Microsoft Security Essentials, and I did a malware check with Malware Bytes. I have an older computer, Windows Vista, AMD Athlon 64 Processor 3500+ 2.21 GHz, 2.00 GB, 32 bit operating system. It's not a specific brand, someone built it for me.
Most computers will need to do a disk check occasionally because of some small disk error. You don't need to be concerned unless it starts doing it repeatedly. In that case you should think of backing up any important files you want to keep, because repeated disk errors are a SIGN of a failing hard drive, and one day Windows won't start and it will be too late to easily SAFEGUARD your data. In fact you should be thinking about this anyway.

Solve : Vista Install: Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria?

Answer»

So.. I decided to upgrade my old laptop from xp to vista. Made sure that it supported it, and went and got my iso flash drive for vista I made a long time ago. Well plugged it in started it up... Ran fine. Key check! Where do I want vista? Error...... Windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria for installation... WHAT?!
I have no clue what this problem means or how to fix it, any help is greatly apprecatied.

System Specs:
146.5 Hard drive, wiped and formatted to NTFS
1.6 Intel Processor
1 G ram
8 G mircobot usb flash drive, with vista and formatted to NTFS

Any thing else that is need to help me, I will try to give youIs there an OS already on the hard drive?
Did you read this:
How to Install Windows Vista

Vista needs 15 GB or more of free space.
Don't expect Vista to resize any partition.
Vista must find a way to create a primary partition. If the existing partition is a big logical drive, it won't work.
Use a partition tool to make sure Vista can create a primary partition.

SYMPTOMS
When you try to install Windows Vista, you may receive the following error message:
Windows is unable to find a system volume which meets its criteria for installation.
You experience this symptom if the following conditions are true:

In the BIOS, a universal serial bus (USB) removable device is set as the start device, or the USB removable device is set to a higher priority than the first hard DISK drive in the start order.

You attach a non-bootable USB device to a USB port before you start the computer.

You try to install Windows Vista from DVD installation media.

CAUSE
This issue occurs because the Windows Vista installation must be able to write to the boot volume of the computer, and the boot volume must be non-removable to prevent later removal of the boot device. If the boot device were removed, this WOULD make it IMPOSSIBLE for Windows Vista to start. A computer is restarted several times during installation. Because the BIOS reports the USB device as the boot device, and the USB device is removable, Windows Vista Installation cannot continue. This is by design.

RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, use one of the following methods.
Method 1
Remove the USB removable device before you turn on the system. You may insert the device after Windows Vista installation starts.
Method 2
Change the BIOS settings so that the USB removable device has a lower priority than the internal hard disk drive and the DVD drive.

STATUS
This behavior is by design.

I would not have come here if I didn't research first. The mircosoft way of fixing it didn't work. And I used a "nuke" program to wipe the hard drive first.

Does it have to do with the fact it does not have a cd-rom or dvd-rom?

I apologise for trying to help.
I am sorry, I was up all try to fix it, and I was just MAD at the world. I am very thankful for your help.

In that it said that a non boot able usb was plugged in could cause the problem... the only things that are plugged in are the power cable, and the bootable usb drive.. I have a camera on the top of the screen. And I believe it was usb. Could that cause my problem?Did you try step by step SALMON's advice above ? ?
If not i would do so...

Solve : Windows 10 upgrade on windows 7 system?

I installed windows 10 to upgrade windows 7. The upgrade GOT me to desktop but immediately says KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED. It says it will gather errors and restart. But it keeps doing that. It's been restarting for three days. How do I fix that?? Thanks in advance for any information.NOONE HAS AN IDEA?? Help! Please include more details about your installation.
Did you make some kind of backup that can restore you to where you were before the WIN 10 install?
What is the make and novel of your PC? Laptop? Desktop? AMD?
What versions of Windows 7 did you use? It matters.

Do you have another working PC?
Do you have an ISO of Windows 10?
Microsoft offers free Windows ISO files — if you know where to look.
How to Download Windows 10, 7, 8, and 8.1 Install Media ...
Yes, it is legal. You can make a Windows install media to either repair the installation or do a fresh install. You then will have a limited TIME to do the activation or otherwise get a license for Windows 10.

If the trouble PC does not work well with Windows 10, you should revert back to windows 7. In a few cases the Windows 10 drivers are not exactly right for some chip sets. This was said about AMD machines. Bu I do not have any exact information about hat.

EDIT: New post about Intel chip set trouble.
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2801754/windows-intel-chipset.html
1) Go to system properties - advanced - startup & recovery settings and UNCHECK "automatically restart"

2) Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded FILE and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE SELECTED Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Solve : Saving data, emails, anything?

Answer»

very often when I try to save whatever is on the screen it won't save. I believe it started with Linked and now it affects whatever may be on the screen. Ithought it was a virus or a lock but it doesn't make sense. Some stuff will save others not. I'm 73 and RELATIVELY new to this technology, so don't laugh!
What I've had to do is copy and paste onto word then save that.
ThanksHere you will find others that have the same problem.

Myself, for one. I am now 76 and have been classified as 'legally blind' for several years. So I can not drive a car and I get a slight bark on income tax. I need to use a computer in order to read without a lot of eye strain and neck pain.

I used to copy and paste stuff from the current view and paste into notepad. That way I could enlarge the TEXT for better visibility and not be hindered by pop ups and overlays.

Recently I notice some WEBSITE do something to make it very hard to copy and paste a part of a web page. To date I have not seen any explanation of this.

The only work around I have is to use the 'select all' option. I use ctl-A to select the whole page, including what is not in the current view. Then I have to paste into notepad and look for the part I wanted to read. Yes, the browser has a zoom feature that helps. But graphics and scripts do not work well with high zoom settings, Like a 4x zoom. It gets to be a mess.

When I paste into notepad, the graphics and scripts and special effects do not transfer. I get just the text. For some reason some websites do not allow me to select a portion of the ext. So I have to select all.

Maybe this would help you.

EDIT: Tthis search may help also:
why you cannot select text in a web pageYou could also try a "print screen" then paste it in a Word document.Make sure you are logged off of Linkedin...Thanks so far. I'll continue on! BTW-Geek-the new aol 9.8 has a mail setting that allows you to enlarge font to assist in reading EMAILS. This is great for me as I had lazer surgery after a double cataract lens replacement, then they noticed a hole in the retina-hmmm! Anyway, I now have vision in only one eye. changing font really helps from going nuts. I'll mess around with the other stuff and see if it helps, but there should be settings that allow you to do what you want on your computer and not dictated by someone else. My vision was A-ok but in the military in air traffic and radar stuff it was very COMMON for vision to go bad when watching a screen for hours on end. After 1 year I required glasses, now I have tri-focals

Patio-thanks! Linked does a lot of stuff that is questionable. Somehow they get into your computer and take your address book, next thing you know they're sending you friend request for everyone in it, even the dead ones that I left in to see what or who does these things. When you complain they start cutting you off and never get communiques any more from forums. Same thing happened on Facebook. Perhaps I'm being paranoid but I believe when you log on they have a program that allows them to enter your computer and insert language to this effect. As I understand, Linked is an American company but developed by Indian IT specialists. No criticism intended, but if the shoe fits!
I found it!! There is an add-in for Firefox called RightClick that ignores the JavaScript thing. With the right click enabled you can do the select and copy like before. It is in the Firefox stuff under tools.
It seems that some think you will steal their copyright materiel if you copy and paste. But turning off the right click is pointless. If I wanted to steal their work, I would not just select a part of it! I would steal the whole thing! Which you can do with select all.

Solve : Crashes, slow startups, myriad of problems?

Answer»

I have a feeling that MICROSOFT messed up a registry file?

Well, here goes:

About a week ago, my pc (windows 7 pro 64bit) wouldn't boot.
It would go to the screen that GAVE an indication that the boot manager was missing.
I was given the usual options, (restore, repair or reinstall).

I tried restore and "surprise" .. no restore points could be found!?
I ran the repair options .. multiple times and even though the claim that everything was fixed .. it wasn't and after starting up again and again, It would go back to that same repair, restore etc. etc. screen!

I had no other option than to use the reinstall feature.
There were two of the options: Reinstall but save all files to a backup partition or Reinstall with a complete erase.

Of course, I chose the restore with file backup and guess what?

I finally got to the desktop but "Bye Bye" files!
(Nothing was saved!)

I was willing to OVERLOOK that but here is my problem(s): I can't create any restore points, I can't get updates to work, (Updates wont even do a search).

Browsers either CRASH or take forever to load: Opera, IE, chrome.

(Even Task Manager freezes at times)

I have tried to download various tools to check for corrupted files or disk errors but even though I can download the tools .. I hit a wall when I try to run them!

I have had popups that read:
server execution failed 0x80080005 error and

error 0x80080002 (and possibly 0x80080003).

I need a way to install all of the updates from 2009 upwards, (This is a 2009 pc).
I can't even update my microsoft security essentials!!

Any help would make me forever in your debt!

You could try this.Quote from: SuperDave on September 21, 2015, 07:00:13 PM

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]This recommendation is a diagnostic. The onjective is to determine if the issue is software or hardware.
Try a Linux Live CD. This is a Linux version that can run from the CD and not require full installation. My favorite is Pippy Linux. You can put it on a USB or a CD. You will have to set you BIOS to boot from a CD or USB.
If the Linux system works good on the internet, you can know that it MUST be a software system issue and not your old hardware.
http://puppylinux.org/
If you are sure it is software, just ignore this post. Well Geek your idea was great. You are the Geek. I wish I would have thought of Linux.

I haven't used this OS in such a long time that I even forgot that I had loaded Ubuntu on this PC. Anyway Ubuntu ran without a hitch.
So, a number of years ago I had backed up my system using Paragon and last evening I did a restore and it certainly appears that things with Windows are back to normal. As long as I can get through a numerous amount of updates it looks like I'm OK.

Thank you so much, overthehill

I don't see how any issue with the CMOS battery could cause the SYMPTOMS you are experiencing. It can't make things worse, though and it is cheaper than a PSU or new RAM, so whether you want to give it a try is up to you. Thanks for helping me so far, I also think it's not from the cmos battery since I can boot my pc if I disable the graphic adapter so I think it's most likely a problem in the ram. Right. A home user seldom has all the tools needed for extensive testing. Therefore it makes sense to try the quick and economic steps first. You can finds the battery at a drug store, camera shop, or a local dollar tree. Physical damage creates "hard errors," which can cause hardware or software crashes whenever the affected memory cell is accessed. Unlike soft errors, hard errors are uncorrectable. Hard errors MAY occur as a result of the memory module experiencing EXTREME temperatures, incorrect installation, incompatibility or power surges, according to Cisco.

Solve : Help determining what I can safely delete on my hdd root directory?

Answer»

Hello, I have just done a fresh install of windows 7 professional, in order that I can back up what files I need and delete everything else. This process has gone great, but I've just now realized that the root directory (C drive) is completely cluttered with files from my previous installation of XP. So my question is what files can I safely delete, without affecting my current windows 7 installation, or any of the files I have already transferred across (documents, pictures). If someone could perhaps even send me a picture of what a fresh installation of windows 7 looks like on the HARDDRIVE root, I would really appreciate it!

Here's what my Cdrive root directory currently looks like.. horrible I know

Thanks!! FIRST, let me tell you why I would not even try.
You did an update to Windows 7 from Windows XP. RIGHT? That means some of the XP files have information needed by Windows 7. And some of those are updates and I an not sure the old updates are not important. Furthermore, the total size of all the old stuff does not add up to a whole lot of disk space. Unless you have a very small drive.

Second point. Yes, you could delete the files before a certain date on the dubious supposition such are not needed. There is a date field that shows when the file was last USED. Rather than delete then, try to move them to you backup device. If a file can not be moved, don't move it.

Now if later you see that file is missing, you can get it back from the backup.

This is not really my idea. Many IT professionals have learned to be very careful about deleting anything without have a backup of everything. I don't know who seed that.
Never delete anything -
Until you backup everything
Thats not your root directory...
Any of the files that have those strange alpha-numeric tags can safely be deleted....they are chkdsk log files...
LEAVE everything else intact.

How to update win 7 from 32 to 64 bit?You need to read about the CURRENT upgrade policy for Microsoft.
Alsop do you know your PC is 54 bit compliant?

Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Policy
Quote

A Windows Anytime Upgrade key might also be called a Windows Anytime Upgrade PRODUCT key.
Windows Anytime Upgrade is unavailable in some EDITIONS of Windows 7.
Also, see this article.
Install, upgrade, & activate

If your PC can not have more that 4 GB of RAM, the 64 bit OS may not give better performance than the 32 bit.If you are currently running a 32-bit version of Windows then you cannot upgrade directly to 64-bit Windows. Instead you will need to do a clean install of 64-bit Windows. If you purchased a retail version of Windows 7 or Windows 8, then a 64-bit version will be included; your key will unlock both. If your computer came with Windows 7 or Windows 8 already installed, on the other HAND, then you may or may not have a 64-bit version as part of the restore and install discs that are typically included with your computer; check the discs that came with your computer or contact your computer's manufacturer to be sure. If you don't have this option, visit the Microsoft Store.
