Solve : Computer won't restart after updating anti-virus?

Answer»

I use Avast and had been getting an error message for the last few days whenever it tried to update itself, so I decided to go to the Avast website and download the latest version directly. It proceeded through the install and then SAID it needed to restart to complete it. I did that, but when it tried to restart, I got the blue screen of death displaying the following message:

*** STOP: 0X0000005C (0X00003000, 0X00000001, 0X00000008, 0X00000000)

I've tried hitting the reset button, got the same message, tried doing a hard shutdown and letting it sit for a few minutes and restarted, got the same message. Help!Tried it again today, still no luck. If it turns out my HD is wrecked, it's not a big deal, I've changed them before and all my important files are on two external HDs, but it would be nice if there was some WAY to fix this and avoid the hassle.
Most likely it is your hard drive again.
Good thing you have a backup of your important stuff. But here is what I would do if I were you. I'll go through my spare drives and see one of him that so may be suitable for a quick project.
Here's the plan. Wipe the drive was some kind of utility you can boot up off of the CD or a USB flash drive. Then format the drive and see if it done has a lot of bad stuff on it or if it looks pretty clean. Most often a really bad drive will cause the format program to crash.
Now the next step then is to install your Windows onto that hard drive. Don't worry about the activation. You will have 30 days to take care that. Next PUT on some of the essential programs you need and get connected to the Internet and put in one of your favorite ANTIVIRUS tools.
Yeah, this economy and all-day project, but it will give you a definitive answer to your problem. If you really can get the thing up and running pretty clean on the spare drive, you can be pretty sure that it really was a problem with the hard drive.
But now things are going wrong you might be wondering if you have something wrong with your motherboard or your RAM chips or even your power supply.
Anyway, that's what I would do. Hopefully you have a spare computer you can use in the meantime to watch your favorite TV shows and movies.
Hope this helps. Just out of curiosity, I took out one of my RAM chips and restarted. That did something, because then it took me to the 'launch repair mode' or 'launch windows normally' screen. I selected repair, so we'll see what happens...So it's back up and running and everything seems fine. Weird. OH well, not going to look this gift horse in the mouth...Just goes to show that failures come in many flavors.
Now is time to think about new RAM sticks. Just in case. You can run some tests on the harddrive and the Ram.

Run hard drive diagnostics: tacktech.com
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: imgburn to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba hard drives, see here:

Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here

That could be a problem with bad RAM. Please run this check just to eliminate that possibility.
Test your RAM here.

Solve : Acer Aspire One D260 Intel Atom N475 running very very slow!?

Answer»

Hello. I need help with my Acer Aspire One D260 Intel Atom N475, 2Gb DDR 3, with 320 GB HDD running on Windows 7 starter.

It's been running so slow! Often times I have to restart it or run CCleaner every once in a while.

I have TRIED running AVAST (Free) but it doesn't detect any virus.

I have a few questions:

1) will reformatting do me good? (I haven't tried reformatting since I bought this 5 years AGO)

2) Can I still upgrade my RAM and should I expect any improvement if I do that?

Thanks!I wouldn't expect miracles from an Atom-based machine but a reformat and fresh install will at least bring it back to as-new SPEED, assuming there are no hardware faults. Windows 7 starter is limited to 2GB of RAM so you won't be able to upgrade that unfortunately. You could CONSIDER changing the HDD for a small SSD which would IMPROVE bootup times, program load times, and so forth, but I'm not sure if it would be cost effective for a 5 year old netbook.

Solve : Computer drops into back up?

Answer»

I joined the Forum today because I have a problem I cannot find an answer to,
Gosh that sounds very grabby.
I have looked through the last 25 pages hoping the problem had already been answered.
I have a 5 year old + Packard Bell PC, the only non standard piece of hardware is a hardwired PCLINE LASER Mouse.
The machine is running Widows 7 home premium.
If I do not keep the mouse moving the computer drops out and reverts to the pretty picture I get to see on start up,
I have a fibre connection with "TALK TALK
I should love to be able to watch a film or a sports programme without having to constantly "STIR" my mouse.
I have tried every which way to resolve the issue with no success.
I fully expect that SOMEONE with rather more than my handful of brain cells has the "OBVIOUS" answer. Check mouse settings in Control Panel...Also power options in Control Panel.

Not exactly rave reviews for that mouse...just sayin...This is such a issue that some sell the -
Mouse Jiggler
Which can be either software or hardware.
(Search on Amazon. about $20 or less.)
http://www.amazon.com/CRU-Inc-30200-0100-0011-WiebeTech-Jiggler/dp/B000O3S0PK
The official Web Site is: https://mousejiggler.codeplex.com/
Really!
One pundit wrote:
The Mouse Jiggler, friend or foe?

When I opened a 10x6-inch box today to find a three-inch USB flash drive labeled "Mouse Jiggler" packed alongside a can of Sobe soda and sweet-tarts, I just scratched my head -- figuratively speaking.

Here is the inevitable Your Tube video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9g-3nIubR8
(I don't get it!)
There are some low tech alternatives. But I will let somebody else say that.

Thank you for your various answers,
I looked in the bottom drawer of the desk and right at the back and still wrapped up and never used was the original "MOUSE"
I unplugged the LAZER mouse and fitted the brand NEW, albeit many years old, original mouse,
I shut down and restarted and guess what?
No fanfare of trumpets and it still reverts to back up, and now it doesn't even show up as a hardware devise on the control panel. Unaccustomed as I am to bad language I may have to look in the thesaurus for a few ripe terms in Anglo Saxon,
Also when I tried to load the mouse into the relevant part of the control panel, nader, nix, nothing. You have a flakey USB slot then...Patio, Hi, I don't think there is anything wrong with the USB slot because whilst the PCLINE Mouse WAS plugged into a USB slot the Original Equipment Mouse has its OWN dedicated Multi-pin socket, Which of course is what I am now using.
I think the problem is with the software not the fixtures and fittings. Caution: The DIN connector is not a hot-swap device. It can kill a mouse
http://geek9pm.com/CH/ps20003.JPG

Windows 7 will allow either mouse to function. Provided that a mouse button is not stuck. The problem, IMO, not really the mouse.
Have you been able to boot into safe mode?
Have you already made a full BACKUP?
You can use the Windows 7 Install dis to do a repair job.

To use the system repair disc
Insert the system repair disc into your CD or DVD drive.
Restart your computer using the computer's power button.
If PROMPTED, press any KEY to start the computer from the system repair disc. ...
Choose your language settings, and then click Next.
Select a recovery option, and then click Next.

You also can make a repair disc.

Does that help any?
Uninstall the hardware mouse software using http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html then use the other working mouse and check the difference.

Solve : tinny distorted audio every couple minutes?

Answer»

Hello there,

could somebody out there help me out with this problem?

Here's what I know:

every couple minutes my external speakers generate this harsh tinny static. the static varies in intensity but typically lasts for 2-6 seconds. Even with audio muted out this distortion still occurs, but at a much FAINTER VOLUME. Switching to the on-board soundcard (SigmaTel?), this crackling seems to vanish. My speakers and external soundcard worked fine on a previous system (windows xp, if that is relevant).

What's the way to troubleshoot this? It's a persistent problem and hope to leave this fuzz behind me

Please provides some detail. What kind of external speakers?
It might be the speakers and its power supply are the source of the noise.

Photos shows speakers have power.

So, why do you need this?
Tascam Audio/Midi interface.

My guess is the noise is COMING from someplace other than the computer.

Solve : Infrequent but Regular BSODS: Cause??

Answer»

Some things to consider. When everything else fails.
Are all fans running?
Reduce the number of items that require POWER. Remove the CD.DVD drive.
Remove one or two sticks of RAM. Remove any USB devices that are not needed for most work. Such as a printer. A USB HUB. A smartphone charger..

Check to see if the default settings for the BIOS are right for the CPU and RAM type. Check to see if any settings seem odd.
Check to see if the CPU model is supported by the chaise.
*Explanation, RARE, but it is possible somebody replaced the CPU with a model that almost right FRO the chip-set. Verify the CPU is really in the chip set list.

All fans are running. Computer load has no effect on this, as it often will occur before there is even anything running, as with the last thing. The computer does have woring fans, though.

I will remove my phone charger and only plug it in when necessary. Good idea. It may have something to do with that!

Solve : Cloning Win 7?

Answer»

"The point overthehill is missing ". I don't feel that I'm missing anything. Rightly or wrongly I felt that what patio was indicating to me was that whatever Microsoft would tell me (after speaking in person) would be a deciding factor. That's what I believed and still believe. I got an answer from someone that supposedly knows what they're are talking about. As long as this Win 10 is running OK I suppose that I'll just wait for that rug. But,I won't be holding my breath.

And who's to say, perhaps the Win key that I have is from a previous pirated version of Win XP.or ?. Then what? .overthehillQuote from: overthehill on October 12, 2015, 04:54:15 PM

I don't feel that I'm missing anything.
You have been told the copy of Windows 7 you had is not genuine. I don't think anybody was necessarily suggesting a course of action, but rather it was meant to inform. You can continue to believe whatever you prefer. Just remember that since we know it is a pirated install, technically it violates forum rules to provide any assistance at all.

Some interesting information about the pirated Windows 7 "Extreme Edition"; it was created around ~2009, and the site can be found with a google search. The fellow selling it uses a yahoo E-mail and sells his pirate SOFTWARE as well as Volume License keys and Activation hacks from that website. Some portions of the site was DMCA'd by Microsoft, meaning many of the links have to go to web.archive.org. I find it hard to even contrive a scenario where it is above-board.

Now, that said, the main concern, IMO, with that version was less it's legal status (outside of course forum liability), and rather that those sorts of pirated installations tend to LEAVE lots of fun goodies such as Remote-Access Trojans, botnets, etc.

You've upgraded to Windows 10 now, which has a good chance of resolving some of those concerns with regards to malware. It is impossible to be certain, though, which is itself a concern. Most software can "survive" an upgrade- the entire upgrade process tries to preserve it, after all.

It appears that you are taking the approach of "If it let's me do it, it is totally legal". The Windows 10 Upgrade requires a legitimate copy of Windows 7, 8, or 8.1. You did not start with a legitimate copy of Windows 7. The Windows 10 upgrade was tricked by the pirated install in the same fashion as the online tool that you posted as 'evidence' that it was genuine.

You spoke to a MS representative of some description. Explained it, and they basically said it was fine. I get the feeling that when it inevitably is not fine they won't be around to clean up the mess, and the story with any representative will suddenly be different, and they will not believe you when you say "The last person I spoke to said it was fine".

Now whether you want to be concerned about the legal status is up to you. Whether you want to care that your system is probably harbouring any number of low-level remote access trojans that Windows has been modified to never reveal to software such as MBAM is your prerogative as well. If you want to continue to use a copy of Windows 10 upgraded illegitimately through the upgrade process by upgrading a demonstrably illegitimate copy of Windows 7 which may be harbouring innumerable pieces of malware, and for which the illegitimate volume license key used for the pirated Windows 7 installation may be discovered and blacklisted by Microsoft, causing your Windows 10 copy to realize it is illegitimate is, also, up to you.

If in the future you need to create a thread titled "Windows 10 claims it is non-genuine" or something similar, just remember that "I told you so" is not against forum rules. The Vostro and OS’s associated with this PC are no longer in my possession.

This decision came largely because of this thread. But, the knock out punch came from much closer to home. Quote. “If this latest computer is causing all this concern and if you will always be worried because it may give you unnecessary problems, Get Rid Of It !!. How many computers do you need?” Unquote.

The PC and the downloaded Win 10 (from Win 7 Extreme) and everything associated with the Vostro are now in the hands of a PC tech. I called him and he wanted to see the PC. He was impressed with how well that system ran. I informed him of the issues associated with this system. Now he can deal with it. Because,I got my money back. And no, he’s not a CH member .

This is a quote from Geek :"Overthehill swear on a three potato chips and I will believe you.
If you lie, the potato chips will make you choke".
Geek, I will not choke. I promise.

I have to admit that this thread was a little stressful and I suppose that I was a little stubborn but I came to CH to learn and this is another one of those learning experiences.

So now I’m back to “Vista” desktop (which I’m now using) and not concerned with piracy on this PC or my others. None of which has Win 7 or Win 10 by the way. And, the next PC that I purchase will not be at a garage sale unless it’s for parts other than OS’s. Like I mentioned a few times I never even gave the version of the OS a glance when I bought that thing. Now I know better.

Thanks to all. I wouldn't feel good if I didn't fit in at CH. overthehill

P.S. For what it's worth. My experience with Win 10 was very limited but I'm not going to upgrade my laptop from Win 8.1 anytime soon. Personally from my limited experience I wasn't that impressed. Perhaps it's what you are accustomed to ?.

That's great, you did the right thing!

Next time, if you are looking at a new PC, feel free to post on here with all details of it and we can take a look before you buy it.Let's keep in mind he's not the bad guy in all of this...
Great, This is good news. As I mentioned my own main concern would be that I wouldn't be able to trust the system. Any legal consideration I leave to forum rules for the most part. Especially as it was not willful.

Quote from: overthehill on October 14, 2015, 12:00:05 PM

Oh man you don't want to get me started. If you are running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 and have no intention of upgrading to Windows 10, I'd suggest getting rid of the 'KB3035583' Update. It should be listed in "Installed Updates" and my personal suggestion would be to hide it. Me and Patio, as I recall, butted heads about this one. I said it was fine, Patio said it was disgusting. Whatever it was then, it's certainly unethical (IMO) now. Now that Windows 10 is released, this update is forcibly downloading 6GB of data onto any and all systems it is installed on. I went over my ISP Data cap in August because the 5 computers I have that run Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 All downloaded 6GB- despite me saying "No thanks" to the upgrade. A few days ago, Microsoft re-issued these updates again, causing them to show up once more on systems (such as mine) that had been configured to not show or install the updates.

I've actually come to think less charitably towards Microsoft as a result, actually. I wouldn't be surprised if Windows 10 is MERELY a stepping stone to a new, subscription-based Windows. No need to advertise or promote it if all Windows 10 systems will accept and automatically download anything Microsoft wants. Thanks Everyone. Like I mentioned, it's been a lesson.
And, BC, when I get back on my laptop I'll deal with 'KB3035583' .overthehillIn regards to (kb3035583) I wanted to hide the file like was suggested. But the only options that I can find for this file are; if I go to VIEW Update History all I can do here is View or Copy Details. If I go to Installed Updates there I can delete the file. At this point I'm not shown any available updates for download all I'm shown is updates are ready to be installed(nothing listed). So the only option that I'm given is to restart the PC.
So my question is; how do I hide the file and if I delete it can I ever get it back if needed? Thanks. overthehillYou might need to have updates set to "Check for updates but let me choose when to download and install them" or "Check for and download updates, but let me choose when to install them", rather than automatic.

I have it set to one of those options on all my systems and as I recall I removes it by using the Installed Updates list and choosing "Uninstall" on the right-click menu for the update, then used Windows Update to check for updates again and found it in the list of "Important" updates and selected "Hide Update" from it's right click menu there. Thanks BC. Yea. I Googled the "hide" option and they showed actual files that could be downloaded for their demonstration. At this point I don't have that option. I'll download what I have and wait for further downloads to appear. I did set the options so that I can choose when to download. With your info. I'm sure I'll find the solution. Thks. overthehill

If it actually did that (re-enable) it would have been fine. For me it did not. After reading some of the links that Geek sent I found out that I was not the only one. Threads in the Macrium Reflect Forums had others having the same problem away back when. One fellow was so upset that he was going to reload Windows.

I was so sure that I tried all of the things mentioned in the previous links but I tried again with this link and this time it worked out perfectly. One thing that is different now, when the start button is clicked for( shut down options or?) the hibernate option is shown.

Within the sleep option in power settings, hibernate must be set to off. If the hibernate setting is set to on, the hibernate option does not appear with the start button. Sleep is shown(with start button) WHETHER hibernate is off or on ( in power settings) but again sleep will not work without hibernate showing?. Thanks so much. overthehill

overthehill,
Glad you found it.
So, in essence, you have to use a Vista option that t works for you. Apparently the issue is not in later versions of Windows. The back up that I have and used was from 2012 and that's where I read about others having the same problem at that time. I haven't backed up since then. I wonder if a newer version of Macrium would act the same way with Vista? I'll probably won't find out. If for some reason I have to re-install Vista from back up, I'll know what to do to put this puppy to sleep with the version that I have. Thanks again. overthehill

They don't have a file type nor an extension. I dare not delete them since they may/must be necessary. Solve : how to move files of a certain type* with folder??

Answer»

How can you move a file of certain type with its parent folder without taking the other FILES with it?

For short easy example I want to move all pictures INCLUDING (taking with) their direct parent folder to a new main parent folder.

For more SPECIFIC example I want to move my pictures out of every folder heres only one for example: (c:\oldpc\bob\something1\reallycool\users\desktop\fromoldpc\PICS) .
I want them to be moved with the last folder they are in (In that example its called pics. I do not want anything else to copy over with them when I move them to the Main Parent folder I want them to go in. For example if there are music files inside the picture folder I do not want the pictures.

Besides just manually searching in every single folder for *.jpg, *.BMP and then also manually creating every single folder again, how can I do this? Is there any commands via CMD I can try? Or Java scripts? Or possibly a free program for example Nexusfile or Multicommander?

TRY using IDE/ATA mode AKA: Compatability mode in your BIOS so the install CD knows what hard drive you have. It's asking for a driver to see your hard drive. It doesnt know what hard drive you have because it can not see it since the Install CD is trying to find a SATA or AHCI Hard drive. That is my guess with the little info provided. When I try to open disk DEFRAG a window opens up which says 'disk defragmenter was SCHEDULED using another program' I click on the bottom of the window on the 'remove settings' button but I still can't open disk defrag software. What can I do to make disk defrag run on my computer without doing system restore?

Regards, YanniOpen Task Scheduler and go to the "Microsoft" Heading. Click on "Windows" and look for "Defrag" and disable the task.

Solve : I cannot shrink my Windows 7 partition past a certain amount?

Answer»

I am TRYING to shrink my windows 7 partition in order to give my Ubuntu partition more space since I barely use windows anymore. But forget about that, this is a Windows 7 issue, has nothing to do with Ubuntu.

I am using Windows 7 Disc Management tool (diskmgmt.msc) to shrink my partition. When I go to shrink it - it says the maximum amount I can shrink by is about 30473 MB - 30GB. Yet I clearly have 300GB of free space on my disk. I read online something about hidden system files are locking that space so you can't use it - but I can easily download large files onto the drive to take up that space, so why can't I shrink it? Even if there is hidden system files using that space, would it really be using that much? I mean 270GB is a lot for system files is it not??

I ended up shrinking by just the 30GB it allowed me because I need more space ASAP on my Ubuntu partition, I was running out. But I would really like to get more than that and make use of that ~300GB that's doing nothing right now.

Thanks guys! Some files can not be moved.
My personal recommendation is to just go get another Hard Drive. That makes everything so much easier. You can buy a good 250 GB SATA for about $25 on eBay. And from other PLACES for close to that prince. from a proven vendor. And also from other stores on line for a little more.

Found on Amazon.
Find 250 GB Drive.

Otherwise, you would have to use a DIFFERENT trick to shrink the drive space. It is time consuming; you have to use a third PARTY utility.Review the procedure explained at https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/gg309169.aspx and try it again. I agree with you that it should allow you to shrink further. Have you tried a 3rd party tool such as Easus Partition Manager ? ?

Solve : IE in Windows 7?

Answer»

I'm TRYING to repair my sister-in-law's laptop with Win 7. There doesn't appear to be an IE on it. I tried downloading IE 11 but when I try to INSTALL it I get a message that there is a newer version on the computer. Presently, I have FF installed but she said it crashes many times.IE has to be there. Look in: "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.exe"

Or go to START - RUN and enter: iexplore.exe (press enter)

If you don't see iexplore in the above location, run Programs & Features and click on Turn Windows Features On & Off and look for IE there.

BTW, just as an ASIDE the FACT that Firefox crashes isn't a good thing. What causes it to crash and what form does the crash take? Uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox is worth a try.

Thanks Allan. I just a few minutes after she dropped off the laptop but a more intensive search located the IE. It appears to be working well now. I did try the uninstall and re-install of FF. I'll give it few more days of testing to see why it crashes.

Solve : What's wrong with my comp!?

Answer»

So the other day i was PLAYING games on my comp then i TURNED it off but i accidentally clicked shut down when i wanted to hibernate it, so i clicked hibernate right after and went to sleep. Honestly i didn't think that WOULD cause any PROBLEMS but I woke up the next day and then my computer wasn't able to play any games and has trouble running videos without lag as well which was never a problem.

All of the games are having errors to do with memory and they won't launch, anyone able to tell me what's going on or how to fix this problem?run memtest86 on system and see if there is a memory issue for REAL vs corruption.

I am sorry that you find my image annoying ST, Many people have opinions to the contrary though! I am not trying to fall out with anyone here!!! ?? Well, I mainly find it annoying because it is visually distracting, any ANIMATED picture would do that. That is the main reason. I do find animated GIFs and emoticons a bit childish.

This issue may be to do with my web storage place. I will be back ..as Arnie said. Please do not close this page yet. Not that I'm complaining but I don't see any image in GLOOPS signature. Not SURE if it has been removed since.I also don't see an image...I have removed the image until I can get my image site sorted out guys. I think that the problem may be there. Need to check it out. Solve : Page File - Windows 7 and 4GB RAM system?

Answer»

Ok 3 questions....

#1

A friend who is somewhat tech savy using this computer at work asked me why Windows 7 uses paging at all when there is plenty of free RAM. I was at a loss and so I am posting this question here?

It would make more sense if paging was 0MB until the system RAM was nearly completely consumed, but I never paid much attention to page file size, just mainly went with rule of thumb from ages ago and made it 1.5x whatever the system RAM size was so a system with 2GB RAM was 3GB page allocation or let Windows manage it to expand and shrink its allocation as needed on its own.

As for why this system is using 221MB of hard disk space for paging instead of 0MB when there is 2140MB Free ( available ).

#2

At what capacity of RAM does it make more sense to shut off paging for slightly better performance and have the system just run direct from RAM? My guess is that its OS version specific vs general. But with Windows 7 I have played with a system with paging shut off on a 4GB RAM system and had no troubles.

#3

Any Cons to having paging off with a system with adequate RAM?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]#1 It's faster. If the system needs memory it is far faster to evict pages that are already swapped to the pagefile than it is to evict pages that are currently in physical memory, because in the latter case, now that data needs to be swapped out.

#2 It doesn't. The only possible speed advantage you can get by disabling the pagefile is that now your programs will never be swapped out, so you will be able to switch to that photoshop instance you launched last week. The problem is that when you do run out of memory, EVERYTHING is going down very, very, hard, because ALL attempts to allocate memory will start to fail.

As far as how big it is, the "Rule of Thumb" you mentioned dates back to Windows 3.1, and APPLIES to the Swapfile (which isn't EVEN a proper pagefile) that can be configured in 386 Enhanced Mode, and since it required you to enter a size, people came up with "rules of thumb" of what size to use. a 8MB system got a 12MB pagefile, for example.

Now, the "Rule of thumb" should be to set it to system managed on the drives you want a pagefile on.

#3 Almost every memory allocation on a modern application and platform is going to be a VIRTUAL memory allocation.

A program can allocate 2GB, but until it actually accesses that memory in it's virtual address space, it won't be "faulted in"- it won't "exist", neither in the pagefile nor on disk. In Windows' case, it will fail the allocation if it cannot guarantee that allocation. The design approach there is that if a program receives the OK from the memory allocation function for a 2GB block, and then uses over 512MB, Windows can't change it's mind when it realizes it can't actually find a place to FAULT in more memory. Even if it could tell the application somehow "oh, remember that 2GB you allocated and I said "yep, 2GB shouldn't be a problem", yeah well, something came up...". For example, if a Program allocates 2GB and there isn't 2 GB free, it will fail if the pagefile is disabled- even if the program only would end up using 512MB of that space. More importantly, that physical memory MUST be contiguous, too. If there is no paging file, a virtual allocation will fail if Windows cannot guarantee that the program will be able to use the full size of the virtual allocation, Which without a pagefile requires Windows to actually allocate that physical Memory. With a pagefile, both of these problems are non-existent. Windows can guarantee a 2GB Virtual allocation even if there is only one physical page remaining because the additional pages of the virtual allocation can be faulted in as they are accessed, and the memory manager can evict other pages back to the pagefile.

Furthermore, while not having a pagefile eliminates Windows ability to guarantee the size of a Virtual Allocation (Which is all memory allocations, really) and thus means that larger allocations are more likely to fail even if the program would have only used a single byte of the block before freeing it, you still only eliminate one of the pagefiles that will be used- Every single executable file on-disk is used as the "pagefile" for the executable code pages of a program.

Or, in very simple terms, Windows was designed to page and it always will. You cannot disable paging, only your ability to manage it.Reference:

Solve : Laptop won't goto sign in screen?

Answer»

I have my sister in laws Toshiba Satellite l500-19z laptop , which would not connect to her internet .
I tried it on my own (different server) but still no connection. Even though it showed that it was connected to our internet ,we couldn't get on line .
I tried to scan the pc with a fix programme that she had on it , it said restart the pc after it had scanned it .
After I tried to restart it,it would not go to the sign in screen just stay blank with the cursor showing . You can move the cursor around the screen .
If you try to start in safe mode the whole thing freezes after about one and a half SCREENS or drivers.
It does say (forgot to mention ) that windows did not shut down successfully due to system not responding .
Also forgot to say os is windows 7 , its about 15 months old .
Thanks for any help , I'am very poor with computers but would like to learn more .
Are there any good books for beginners that people would recommend. A very similar thing happened to me not long ago. My PC Windows 7 refused to COMPLETE startup. In Safe Mode, the list of opening files would scroll by and then SUDDENLY stop and never continue.

I did a Google search with a phrase like “windows 7 hangs on boot” and found this article which fixed the problem.
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-performance/windows-7-hangs-on-startup/12b2cc64-bdaf-4183-9a0d-22a73b72f6d6

The article describes how to perform the built-in Startup Repair procedure.

It might also be helpful to note that the computer in the article always stopped, in Safe Mode, at the same FILE [in his case, classpnp.sys], so you might try searching for the particular file your computer stops at, for example, ‘windows 7 hangs on classpnp.sys’, or whatever file it might be. This article includes many comments from other people who had the same problem. You might want to read them if this solution doesn’t work for you.

I happened to have an installation disk on hand because I had upgraded from Windows XP, so I used that to run the Startup Repair. If you don’t have a disk try following the instructions for ‘To run the Startup Repair tool if the computer has preinstalled recovery options’ part way through the article. I hope it works for you too.
Thanks Bromide for the reply . When in safe mode it does stop at (classpnp.sys).
I viewed the link and it had some good points which makes it more a software/os ISSUE rather than the pc .
As I said before it's not my pc and I'am very new to this , so I choose not to mess with any settings.
I gave the pc to a bloke at work who likes messing ( and knows ) his way around a pc.
I know this defeats the object of learning about them but it's not mine to kill !!!
If he comes up with any good ideas or solutions I will post them here . NOT GOOD NEWS .
I have the laptop back from my friend at work . He was unable to do anything to get it working in the condition I gave it to him .
He did find a virus on it (one which steals passwords ) , if this had anything to do with it he doesn't know.
The only way he could fix it was to clear the hard drive and reinstall windows . He seems to know what he is doing and says reinstalling was the only way .
I hope this is of help .If he did a wipe and clean install not sure what his skill level is or was...
There were other avenues that could have been done without wiping all your data..
However if all is good then good news...If he did a wipe and clean install not sure what his skill level is or was...
There were other avenues that could have been done without wiping all your data..

I have this problem so would love to know what the other options are - I don't want to wipe my computer!

Solve : How can I create a multi tasked USB drive including Win7 x64+x86 installer?

Answer»

I am tired of formatting my usb drive each time i need to install windows on a different computer.
I would like both version of windows 7 ultimate (32bit+64bit) to be on the same key and if possible, many dos bootable tools, such a hiren boot cd, aomei backupper, linux, windows live, and many more, to choose from a menu.

Is it possible for a single usb drive to do all that?Yes, it has been done.
You can use parts of Linux to create a Multiboot Boot USB stick.
How to Create a EFI/UEFI GRUB2 Multiboot USB drive to boot ISO images
It can boot the Windows ISO. See the link for details.to be clear, linux is very last on my list of priorities(never tried it for more than 5 minutes), im more of a windows guyUnderstood. Here is the story. The GRUB boot loader is the most universal loader available for use plain folk. It has been polished and revised to that it can almost order Pizza to go. (They might have that by now.)

Otherwise, doing Windows only multi boot on a USB is a bit of a up long climb up a steep hill.
But his you Tube video makes it look easy. (Ignore the advertisement.)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOIn8c7gqNg
Hope that helps. Just Google for Grub4DOS. I have made a pen drive ("USB stick") which has Hiren, Knoppix, Macrium REFLECT, Acronis, GParted, Windows rescue and install disks... all are ISO files... You get a boot menu. It's easy, just read the instructions and follow them.
Quote from: sirgilmour on November 18, 2015, 01:57:30 PM

To be clear, Grub4DOS is a universal boot loader BASED on GNU GRUB. It can boot off DOS/LINUX, or via Windows boot manager/syslinux/lilo, or from MBR/CD. It also has builtin BIOS disk emulation, ATAPI CDROM driver, etc. You don't have to see any "Linux" at all if you choose Windows based ISOs to boot from.
I use one of these: http://www.zalman.com/global/product/Product_Read.php?Idx=750

At first glance it looks like an ordinary 2.5" disk enclosure. However, it can also emulate an Optical drive. You can copy ANY bootable ISO image to it and then boot from it. No need to follow any instructions on how to install the ISO and setup a menu. Simply copy the ISO to the FOLDER on the drive named _iso and it will automatically appear as a bootable entry on the LCD and then you can select and boot from it. My enclosure has a 160G drive in it and I have dozens of ISOs on it that I can boot from. If you have any old floppy disk images, it can boot from them as well.

Things like Grub4Dos are cheaper (free vs $60) but nothing has the Zalman enclosure beat in terms of being versatile and easy to use.

Solve : Windows 10 update nightmare?

Answer»

I revenly received an upgrade invite from Microsoft OFFERING a free download of 10 from my older but very reliable 7 version. System requirements all checked out, but but upon completion of the upgrade, my laptop was running noticeably slower. I limped it ALONG until the end of the quarter and out it away. 2 months later I go to start it up and I end up stuck on a blue screen with a spinning CIRCLE of dots unable to access even my login screen or anything else. This repeats every time I attempt to start up. I called Microsoft help and got nowhere because the agent must remotely access which is not possible because I can't sign on to an Internet connection eventhough I have found that the connections screen is the only screen I can get to from the blue screen with spinning circle. I I get there with ctrl+alt+del but not able to connect. I need help as I'm in the thick of winter quarter and do not have the funds for a new COMPUTER. PLEASE help.

Solve : f11 recovery won't work?

Answer»

I posted this elsewhere and thought I’d give it a try here also.

I've been working a lady's laptop that was brought to me in sorry, sorry shape (full of junk such as toolbars out the ying yang, P2Ps, malware, trojans, etc.). I've finally got it to a stage where I can, at least navigate around on it.

I found in BIOS that the original OS is supposed to be Vista, but this baby has Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit with the Microsoft COA partially torn off. Methinks someone is trying to pull a fast one for nothing moneywise.

My real problem is that I can't get f11 Recovery to work. There is no Recovery Mgr. in Programs List because, if I understand correctly, the f11 Recovery should do a recovery back to just like she came out of the box (which is what I'm trying to do).

I've tapped f11 til I'm tapped out, ctrl + f11, fn + f11--al to no avail. Disk Management shows the System Reserved partition to be healthy and active (but, at this stage, who knows for sure). I've run full system scans (not quick scans) and removed GBs of trash with:
Malwarebytes
Spybot S&D
Spywareblaster
Spywarehunter 4
online Trendmicro Housecall
Avast FREE 2016 (which I installed myself as all it had when I got it was MS Security Essentials)

I've read as many suggestions for a fix that work for everyone else, but not here. lol I'm sure I've forgotten to include some PERTINENT info, so if you need more, I'll be glad to submit it in further posts.

Would someone please hold my hand and tell me what I'm doing wrong? I'd appreciate it, and thank you in advance if a pc guru can help me solve this. (If it was possible to get away with it, I'd have already kicked this one to the curb, but I WANT to figure the problem out so I can use the solution on the next one that comes to me--if I decide to even work on one of these again).

Laptop is a Compaq CQ60-419WM
Disk Management shows a System Reserved partition (not Recovery) on Disk 0:
100MB NTFS (used space = 30.1MB)
Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)
Right click on that partition and “Make Partition As Active” is grayed out
**Don’t know much about this stuff, but it looks like someone has done away
with the Recovery partition?**

System reserved is from the last Win install...it's not a Recovery partition....
Look up the Manual Online on how to use the Recovery Partition...provided they didn't wipe it and it's still there.Used Compaq laptops in the model line are about $150 to $200 on eBay.

My thought is at some point it becomes futile to try to understand what somebody else did to the computer.

If your could get one of these, it could be used to find out what is wrong with the customer's laptop. Later, you might retell the laptop to recover your investment. You did say you are a non-profit - right?

Many thanks for the replies.

pato, u answered a queston I had, but not yet asked. It looks as tho someone before me has wiped the Recovery Partton making my decision to let her have this machine back, as is. I dd get enough junk out of it so that it's now useable. (But I'd rather have been able to get it back to Vsta as the BIOS shows it should be).

Geek9pm, I COMPLETELY agree that (in this case for sure) it's sometimes futile to try to figure out what the other guy has done to it. I've got a bad taste in my mouth about the MS COA sticker being partially torn off and the wrong OS in it anyway.

Thanks to all who read my post. Consider ths thread partly solved, but done. It wasn't a complete loss 'cuz I learned a couple of thngs from you that I can use in the future.

She has another option...order the Recovery Media from the laptop manuf. site...

She may get lucky.lol patio. It'll probably take an act of Congess to get her to pay ME after all the TME I've put n cleanng it up, let alone turning loose of any bucks for recovery dsks.

I've already mentoned that to her, but I detect that she's tght as bark on a tree when t comes to her money. She's gong to get ths machne back the way it is with a gentle piece of advice to keep her kds and every other heathen off it 'cuz I'm not touchng it agan.

Thanks again. Anytime...

Solve : i cant roll back from from Win10 to Win7 :(?

i just bought a 2nd hand HP 8200 series PC.

i noticed that win10 had this option to Roll Back from Win10 to Win7.
i'm not sure how he updated it, because there is no
back up image anywhere on the hard drive.(the win 10 app explained)
i tried some 3rd party software, same result.
so if i cant do it without a clean install of a win 7 image,
my question is then ,can i somehow extract the license/activation/serial
from the hard drive & then activate a win7 image i downloaded?Quote

He should have given you the original product key. Otherwise, the product key is somewhere on the chassis of the COMPUTER. Often the backside.
May I ask the issue with W10? You know that with a couple of simple tweaks you can get it to look and act almost exactly the same as W7, yes?main issue is, was i could not connect to the net. my wireless isp provider & 3rd party did not envisage the
arrival of win 10. hence the drivers only partially worked, then failed. they have recently revised a work around though.
besides that i felt totally overwhelmed by the interface. like my first day @ school.
for me, i need to know the infrastructure, the nuts the bolts ,where, why, how come.

to put things in perspective i only ever ran a win 7 for maybe 6 weeks or so & it was a priated copy from the net.
but at LEAST i understood part of the framework.
i wasn't much fussed on it either..in a nutshell no matter how derided, i'm still an xp old school kinda guy.

yeah the coa is on the side of the pc. my question should of been structured better.sorry.
the guy buys up liquidation items, ie: company insolvencies ,government 2nds at auction. refurbish them then sell them @ auctions,ie:ebay, etc.
in this CASE (and i'm perplexed by it) with all his supply of hp 8200 series (he had 35+ in his apartment) he decided to upgrade my one. there is no logical reason why he would do a clean install with a win 10 disk.
i understand that if you have a legit copy of win7 or 8 & are online microsoft will update you.
if you decide too & during the update ms will back up the old os,yeah.
well in my case there is no backup.
that's my bugbear.
so i will rephrase my ?
can i download a win 7 (i believe win 7 home prem) do a clean install and use the coa on the side of

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Just a side note...

main issue is, was i could not connect to the net. my wireless isp provider & 3rd party did not envisage the
arrival of win 10. hence the drivers only partially worked, then failed. they have recently revised a work around though.

This caught my eye and an ISP or service provider doesn't need "drivers" to provide service...

Just sayin.Quote from: oozyboy on November 23, 2015, 06:58:45 AM

Solve : Audio Volume/Mute shared between all users?

Answer»

Surprised I havent deal with this issue sooner than now. But There is a system running Windows 7 64-bit that has different profiles on it. And it appears that the audio properties are SHARED between all users vs written and saved to profile. So the last person to adjust the audio level in Windows, is what all others now have for a volume level as well as muted or enabled.

Trying to figure out if there is a way to fix this. The problem being that one person will log off and have their volume setting set to the max and the next person to logon has the audio cranked when they had it muted prior and inherrit the audio settings of the last user. Unfortunately its not as easy as removing the set of speakers and saying enough is enough no more sound, they need it as part of their job.

So sharing this here in case anyone knows of a way. I am tempted to take a set of speakers and set the volume to 50% with the knob and pour super glue into the potentiometer so that the speakers will never go to 100% max volume ever again however there has to be a better way at the system level to deal with fixing this half ... method that microsoft used to share the audio settings among all users and should have had the audio level setting and enabled or muted written to user profile when a user logs off so that when they log back on their settings are theirs and not the last persons. From what I can find, the only Audio settings stored per-user are the per-application mixer settings. These are stored here:

Code: [Select]HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\LowRegistry\Audio\PolicyConfig\PropertyStore

They aren't really stored in a user-readable format, but they are stored as ratios of the Master volume (which is why changing the master volume adjusts other sliders in the volume Mixer, I expect).

The Master Volume is a property of the sound device itself, and thus a setting of the local system, not the user. I suspect the reason is to avoid a very similar scenario to what you've described- if it was part of the user profile in the user hive, I believe it would roam, which means that a user's volume would APPLY to other machines they log into, which could be problematic in many of the same ways you've described.

There is a command-line tool, nircmd which appears to provide the ability to adjust the system volume. It doesn't provide a way to retrieve the current volume, but you could use it in a login script to set the volume to 50% at log-on, from what I can tell, this would work:

Code: [Select]nircmd.exe setsysvolume 32768

If only we could set the system volume, it would be possible to work up a script, I expect.

This got me thinking that surely it is possible for a program to do this itself- after all, Nircmd seems to be able to retrieve it. I did a few searches on that and found a few code samples that used the Vista and Later Core Audio APIs to retrieve the current sound level, but I wasn't able to determine how to add the ability to set the volume level. My searches, however, did lead me to this project.

I decided the subject struck my fancy, so I created Volume Slapper, which attempts to be a basic command line tool for setting and getting the volume level. For convenience I also put the installer on my website using my new download setup.

Some caveats:

The main caveat is that I wasn't able to GET it to work with .NET 3.5. That matters since if I was able to do so, Windows 7 comes with .NET 3.5 so nothing would need installed. As it is it needs .NET 4.0, which appears to be a requirement of the Core Audio library. A minor issue, really.

Note also that installation is only a convenience thing. Really you can take the executable and the Vannatech dll and put them wherever as is and the program will work (as long as .NET 4 is installed).

My thought process is that being able to set or get the volume on the command line should make it possible to create logon and logoff scripts that will restore and save the current master volume, respectively. logoff could redirect the output of the VolumeSlapper get to a file stored in the users profile (%APPDATA%\volume.dat for example):

Code: [Select]VolumeSlapper get > %APPDATA%\volume.dat

and logon could do something like:

Code: [Select]if not exist %APPDATA%\volume.data goto ending
type %APPDATA%\volume.dat | set /p volumelevel=
VolumeSlapper set %volumelevel%
:ending

That's an example, no idea if it works as I'm not much of a batch person. (the path to VolumeSlapper would presumably need to be changed) As I recall you're a bit of a weirdo (heh) and seem to prefer having everything hacked into one executable, more or less. I found a few results for C++ as well that use the same APIs (which are part of the windows API itself) but it didn't strike my fancy that much that I was going to muck about with C++

Thanks BC with assistance with this. Going to try that out.

Grins yes I suppose the code examples I have shared have been those that could be ADDED to a Rube Goldberg museum if there was one or would send me to an asylum of twisted minded programmers by mixing and matching instructions into a single compiled EXE such as using system(); calls in C++ as well as I have also done with Perl which just runs as the .PL to call to other stuff outside of itself at the command shell vs having it all run from within as a means to avoid reinventing the wheel at times and bend other executable functions to my needs.

Best system created so far in such a way of twisted programming and hardware hacking/modding was making a system that monitored my prior employers network for main location and 5 SATELLITE locations and when there was a problem it would call me on my cell phone and play prerecorded audio files to me as to where the problem was at in my own voice of predefined error conditions that could occur. And it kept calling me over an over until I reset it so if I was outside of a cell reception area and then got 1 bar I would get the call and see the unique phone number that was only used by my system a private fax line .... This worked really well, and I was able to act so fast on issues that end users thought that the infrastructure was running so much better than it has in years, when it was but it wasnt without me having to fix stuff behind the scenes as quickly as it was detected so that end users wouldnt detect it.... however a better method may have been to just pass the error condition to an e-mail and have the exchange server pass it off to me by an e-mail alert, but a phone ringing I would be more prone to be notified by vs an e-mail to self so I went the unusual route. I could go into pages and pages as to how it was designed and how it functioned, but that would put some people to sleep.

Solve : Microsoft product key on the back wont validate windows to upgrade to 10?

Answer»

i found a (ok) gateway laptop that someone had tried to reformat with 7. (thats what it had when it was new)
the disk (or something) wasnt complete or what ever so i used a old 7 OS i had on a disk and reformated it! It went great but now im done I cant validate it with the number on the STICKER! i tried at the end of the install...Where it says Product KEY? (and asks for it) THAT DIDNT WORK! I tried every number anyway it could e miss read! Then I started installing windows 10 and it asked for the key again... The install said the upgrade was free so its wanting the product key for 7? Windows 10 is free. With some limits.
Links like the one below can be sim-leading.
http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/get-windows-10-free

Now about your specific issue. If the number on the sticker will not validate, it is for another version of Windows 7.

You might be able to get the original Windows 7 disk from the Gateway company. Here is a link to Gateway:

Windows 10 will not accept a Windows 7 product key, you need to install Windows 7 using the key and then from within that install of 7 perform the upgrade to 10.Old laptop...
Found old Win7 CD and installed to laptop...
Updated to Win 10...

What did you expect to happen ? ?Quote from: camerongray on November 29, 2015, 04:24:56 PM
Windows 10 will not accept a Windows 7 product key, you need to install Windows 7 using the key and then from within that install of 7 perform the upgrade to 10.

The "Fall update" or Threshold 2, or whatever you want to call it, is actually supposed to take a Windows 7 or 8 product key to activate Windows 10, without having to perform an upgrade install from the earlier Windows version. From what I've read, the Media Creation Toolkit offered this as a download, it was then pulled, but it's supposedly been re-updated (if that's a word?) - I've just downloaded the tool and it reports it's version 10.0.10586.0 which is the latest including the new update. So in theory if you use the latest Windows 10 download from Microsoft, you should be able to just ENTER the Windows 7 product key - assuming you're using the right key. By this I mean you'd need to be using a Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic, or Home PREMIUM key to activate Windows 10 Home, or a Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate key to activate Windows 10 Pro.

Hope this makes sense and is of some help.

Solve : Two monitors, fullscreen game causes video on second screen to freeze?

Answer»

This is not a huge issue, just something I am wondering about. May get confusing.

OS Windows 7 64-bit
Video card GeForce GTX 660
Processor AMD A10 5800K processor
Ram 8GB
Motherboard ASUS F2 A85-M PRO
Power supply Raidmax RX-730SS

When I play fullscreen games (Vindictus, Skyrim, Mass Effect 1+2, etc.) on my main monitor (monitor 1) any video I have playing on monitor 2 (using an application, not a browser) freezes. The sound continues to play but the screen stays the same. I usually use VLC to play my videos.

Exactly what happen is, the game opens (monitor 1) and the video I am playing (monitor 2) is stuck on the frame it was showing when the game opened. The sound plays as if nothing is wrong. Closing/alt-tabbing out of the game causes the video to begin playing again.

I googled this issue and found many suggestions of changing the video overlay settings and the output in VLC's video options, like changing it to OpenGL or DirectX etc. But none of those options seem to change anything. The video still freezes once I open a fullscreen game.

I have found two workarounds, both of which are sort of annoying:

1. Use Windows Media Player. Although it does not have the video/subtitle support that VLC does, it does not freeze when a fullscreen game is opened on the other monitor. Because of this, I know it is at least possible to play video while playing a fullscreen game. So how does WMP handle video differently, and is there a way to make VLC work the same?

2. Play the game in Windowed mode. I hate doing this though, especially in some games where the mouse just floats out of the window (skyrim, vindictus) and when tabbing back in, it causes problems like the mouse cursor not disappearing (skyrim and vindictus again, yes I have tried the "disable windows themes" suggestion)

So to simplify,
-Why do videos play in WMP but not VLC when a game is in fullscreen mode on a separate monitor?
-Is there a way to fix VLC to play the video? I already tried changing the video settings.
-I have never been able to get this to work. Just wondering why now.

Thank you for any explanations/help on this.
The instinctive tendency (for me at least) is to suspect either an insufficient ram to handle the intensity of the demand from the 2 videos at the same time and/or the incapacity of the current video card to process the data of the 2 videos simultaneously. As to why the WMP can handle the 2 together and VLC cannot is somewhat beyond my pay grade. But i suspect it is a factor of how they handle video with regards to the processing methods used by them. May have something to do with a WMP app to integrate with a Windows O/S versus a third party app such as VLC (just guessing on that last bit). Have you ever tried to use 2 similar type videos (neither of which is a game) in the manner you are trying to use a game and another (like streaming) video simultaneously to see how it deals with that combination?truenorthQuote from: truenorth on January 01, 2013, 01:06:15 PM

As for using two videos, do you mean playing fullscreen videos in both VLC and WMP at the same time? I just tried that, and it works perfectly fine.

For a further test, I ran two fullsceen games, and my fps dropped to about 40 fps each game but both played fine. Must note here that getting a game to run on the secondary monitor fullscreen is a pain logistically.

Hmm if it was a RAM issue, would the sound continue perfectly like it does? I also get 60+ fps in game, so not sure if that matters. And the video plays if the game is in windowed mode, not fullscreen, with the same resolution. Can't help but think that it is putting both monitors into "fullscreen" mode, and just shutting off the video for the second monitor somehow. Not sure if this is even a thing that can happen though. I use COMPUTERS a lot, but know very little about how they actually work from a programming side.

Streaming video like Youtube works fine, I can watch fullscreen youtube videos while playing fullscreen games, no issues.

When I googled it, people say many things about things out of my pay grade as well...directX and OpenGL, for example in this thread :http://forums.ngemu.com/showthread.php?t=143076 But I tried changing the VLC output settings to opengl and it did not work.

It seems (from majority) that the issue has to do with video overlay (?) or video output modules (?) but no one seems to know why WMP works and VLC doesn't.

Seems funny that I switched to VLC because it works better/does more but in this one instance it fails, haha. Also, it seems multi-monitor support just doesn't quite exist yet. I consistently encounter issues using my two monitors."As for using two videos, do you mean playing fullscreen videos in both VLC and WMP at the same time? I just tried that, and it works perfectly fine.' Not quite i meant using VLC for both. Your RESULT seems to me to verify that it is a "demand" issue (where i used in my previous post =intensity). I have never used the combination you are using (absolutely NOT a game player) but there are many here that are. It occurs to me that in order to use the full screen mode you may need to upgrade your video card to something capable of handling 2 video processing simultaneously to the level that games today require. At this point i would welcome the participation of those members that have had to deal with your type of issue to give your some suggestions in that regard. Be patient i feel they shall soon come aboard. By the way are you using the max ram that the computer is capable of--i would tend to go that route before the video card route.truenorthThis is a bug in VLC. When another Application goes full screen it assumes nobody can see what it would display so it stops updating it's video.

Another manifestation of this bug can be seen with Aero Peek on Win7, actually.

Start VLC. Start a video. When the window is not minimized, you can see the video playback in the Aero Peek thumbnail.

If you minimize VLC, though, the video is "frozen" at the point you minimized, while the sound continues.

I imagine VLC has some logic to try to determine if it's video is visible, and if it isn't it doesn't bother to update it. Other fullscreen applications must trigger that logic.

BC, Given that information can you recommend to the O/P a single app that would allow that which is desired (video/game in full screen simultaneously)?truenorthQuote from: BC_Programmer on January 01, 2013, 02:03:48 PM

Thank you so much for this explanation. I really do like learning why things are what they are. So the issue here, is basically VLC does not know I can still "see" the video once a game goes fullscreen, right? That is kind of cool. Not really optimized for multiple monitors though.

WMP must work differently, as I can see the video in Aero peek and it plays when things are fullscreen. I guess I will suffer through WMP for now, until I can figure out something else.

I will maybe try asking on the VLC site if there may be support for this in later releases. Thank you for explaining this. You are always very helpful.Quote from: Mayuukosan on January 01, 2013, 02:22:33 PM

I'm not sure how WMP works, specifically, but I think it might always update it's image simply on the assumption that things like Aero Peek might be looking at it (It's also possible for third-party add-on programs to grab those thumbnail images and videos and "watch" them, too).

For VLC I don't know if there is a work-around. From what I can tell this is a well-known issue- there are SEVERAL bug reports regarding Multiple monitors and full-screen applications, but none of them are still open and most of them are just the developers arguing that not enough information was given even though there is plenty.

What makes this issue really odd is that more recent versions of VLC sport a little control bar within the Aero Peek pop-up, so it's odd that they never tested that feature when the program was minimized.

I just updated to 2.0.5 and it still seems to work the same here. I only have one monitor so I'm working on the assumption that the same problem that causes it to not work with full-screen programs is the same as the one that prevents it's Aero Peek preview from updating when it is minimized, which might not be the case, though. Google's show recommendations to change the option in Tools->Preferences and under "Video" and change "Output" to different modules, but I don't think this would solve the problem. (And you've probably already tried this from your own searches).Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 01, 2013, 02:51:03 PM

I am using 2.0.5 as well, should have mentioned that haha. Thanks for looking into this so in-depth for me! You may not remember, but you help me a lot.

You are right, I did change the output modules, and it did not help. I tried every option in the list. In fact, it did not seem to change anything at all, although I am not really sure what changing the output module even does.

There is an option under DirectX in video options that lets you choose a screen (it says display, \\.\Display1 and \\.\Display2) but this does not seem to change anything either. I put it back to Default, which was the original setting. I was sure it was just some setting I had wrong to start with, but now I can see it is VLC itself.

On a off-topic note, I love that control bar. I hated it when they took the WMP toolbar AWAY, that is what really switched me to VLC way back when. But then I just found this today here: http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/1232-63-windows-media-player-toolbar which lets me have the toolbar still. Doesn't help with unsupported file/sub types though.

I actually use DisplayFusion (purchased a year ago too) to do exactly what this program describes. I really like it, but I can not really find a way to *force* it to make VLC play the video, it is exactly as BC_Programmer says, once I open a fullscreen application VLC stops showing the frames of video.

Link for DisplayFusion here: http://www.displayfusion.com/

I actually got DF to get a multi monitor taskbar, but it has more options than that.

I was going to try the CMSST there, but I could not seem to find a download on the site you linked, should I trust the download from here?: http://www.softsea.com/review/CSMMT-ComroeStudios-Multi-Monitor-Tool.html or here: http://www.comroestudios.com/CMMT/CMMT_left.html

Neither sites look very polished so I want to make sure I do not get something....unsavory. Thank you for the suggestion though!

"Neither sites look very polished ----" . The link above comes as a result of my following some bread crumbs from a wikipedia site on the subject. As you will note it is a very bear bones site. It was from that site that i linked the "overview" link. I have wandered around within the company site and it does include far more technical information that is contained in the "overview'. As to the security aspect of the site i am not in a position of knowledge to comment on that. I may be in error but i was of the opinion that their program was NOT dependent on the use of another program to achieve your objective (such as VLC). Wish i could be more assuring but similar to you i am using your query as a learning experience.truenorth
i came across this forum while looking for and identical problem (mine actually crashed VLC). i also found a solution elsewhere that seems to work, so i thought i'd share it here.

go into tools, then preferences. under the videos settings, change the output to OpenGL Video Output instead of automatic.

this appears to have worked for me, hope it works for you too.Hey, (to anyone new having this problem) just had the same problem and figured it out: simply type in "vlc" in the "search programs and files" by your windows start icon...it will bring up some vlc files- simply click on the line that says "reset preferences and cache" it will then self repair, I believe the problem is caused when vlc thinks there is a second monitor attached to your computer.... it sometimes sends the vlc screen to that second (ghost) monitor even when it isnt attached. this can probably be prevented by dragging the vlc screen back to your original monitor before you turn it off. good luck!!

Solve : Downloads won't save..?

If you try to download the slim and portable versions of ccleaner http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/builds does the slim version disappear and the zipped version get through? (I'm trying to figure out if you can download a zipped version of an exe or if it is deleted) I know my antivirus will block an exe in a zip file. This is unreal... I went to your link, DL'd the ccsetup305.zip. Never saw the DL Manager box, but Bit Zipper opened up, and there it was! Sort of... The path BZ gave me was C:\Users\Ginny\AppData\Local\Temp\ccsetup305.zip. Listed 49 files - 1 ccleaner & 1 ccleaner64, both .exe files, 1 Licence.txt, 1 Portable.dat, and the rest were all lang-****.dll files. Made a folder on my desktop (ccsetup). Tried to select, then drag & drop the files. Didn't work. Tried to Copy them from the BZ menu. That didn't work either. Went to the C:\U\G\A\L\Temp dir. No Folder or File starting with cc, none containing a 305, and nothing with a .zip extension, but they are showing on Bit Zipper. There is, however a new folder in the Temp called bzdragdrop with today's date, I assume bz put it there when I tried to drag and drop the files... So - where *are* the files? Or did they delete, but BZ is still showing them? Can't run the *.exe file from BZ - I tried. In FireFox go to Options>Applications>scroll down to Zip Archive and highlight it. You will see a drop down on the right of the listing, Select Always Ask. Now try downloading the CCleaner.zip again and choose to Save the File. See if you can save it to your usual download folder.

If you can save it, then try unzipping it to a folder and see if both ccleaner.exe files are in that folder.Changed to Always Ask in Firefox, did the DL, nothing on my desktop, as usual... BTW, I didn't lose interest over the weekend - just had a death in the family and a kitchen fire, both on Sat., that's why it TOOK me so long to get back to you... I read all the posts and most were over my head.

For many months now I never know if a file will download or not from my browser. The problem ranges from just not being able to download an image to not being able to download a document or an exe file. I used to only use the Chrome browser until this happened. Now If Chrome or Firefox won't download it I copy the link and open the other browser. Usually, I can download it from there. Sometimes not and then I try IE. I can't remember if IE has failed or not, but I hate IE and hope that isn't the only answer. Before I got Firefox I noticed that it often happened after I installed a Windows update. Then if I kept rebooting and/or shutting down- 66 sec. wait - restart it would 'sometimes' fix it. A few times I fixed it by running ccleaner w/ or w/o the registry cleaner.

I right click/ save image as and the window that looks just like File Explorer opens and I chose where I want to save it. When it doesn't work as soon as I click 'anywhere' on that window, I get the spinning blue circle and the window dims. I can either wait a long time or click on the red 'X' to close that window. Either way a smaller window opens in that one TELLING me that 'name of browser' is not responding and asking if I want to wait or close the program. Waiting for up to two hours has never worked. So now I always choose the close program option. Then I get yet another window telling me that Windows is searching for a solution. It has never found one so I always click cancel and then the browser closes. Then it still will not save an image (any format) for an undetermined period of time. I have went weeks unable to save an image only to have it suddenly start saving them again when I have done nothing to make any changes to anything.

I am attaching a screenshot of my system info from CONTROL Panel. I keep Windows and my Chrome and Firefox browsers updated to the latest versions. "Version 47.0.2526.73 m

Google Chrome is up to date.", Firefox is 42.0 and up to date. IE is IE11 version 11.0 and the usual overlong string or Microsoft numbers that can't be copied. Install updates automatically is checked on it.

I can't tell from the preview if the image is attached or not. It is running Win 8.1 Pro w/ Media Center (which I have never used) it's 64 bit with a QUAD core 3.4 CPUs, a GeForce 9I think) 760 Graphics card. The case and everything inside it was purchased separately and installed by the people from whom I bought it. It was supposed to be a close to state of the art gamers computer. I don't game, but wanted something fast and that might not turn to crap in 2-3 years (LOL). It came with the full Windows OS from windows, not some chopped up version like I always had before. A lot of good it did me!

Solve : AIO_CDB Error Message?

Answer»

I have this recurring message (see attached) whenever I restart my computer. I think it has to do with and HP printer that I use to have but I don't have anymore. I can't seem to get this error message to go away. I thought if I could delete the path maybe it would go away but I don't have a clue of how to do that. It is like this phantom message that isn't connected to anything. Any help would be appreciated. Usually when it appears I can cancel through it but It comes up about 4 or 5 times and I cancel each one and than it goes away until I restart my computer again. There is nothing that I can see in Programs and features to Uninstall

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]If it is pat of a printer install, remove FULLY the printer drivers and software. Reboot and see .
Otherwise you will have to f ind the MSI thing that is associated with that thing. Edit the MSI so the program does not start up.Thanks for your help Geek. After struggling with this problem for a couple of years ( tried to address it a few times and gave up and just decided to LIVE with it) I sat down that night into the morning and just kept at it trying to locate the file by following the file path which wasn't as easy as it sounds. Several times I went to System Config start up. I felt SURE it had to be there but I wasn't sure how to identify it. It wasn't like it flashed at me indicating "this is your problem" so after a couple of hours I decided to "uncheck" a couple of HP Digital imaging boxes I noticed where the file path resembled the path I was looking for. I figured if it didn't work I could always go back and recheck them. I restarted my computer and the error message was gone. Of course I kept restarting my computer to make sure because I couldn't believe I solved it LOL ( by then it was 2am in the morning) My guess is I was getting the error message because it was trying to start up a program that didn't exist anymore. It just takes some of us longer to figure things out. As a general note.
Some printer software does not UN-install in a polite WAY. Not just HP. All of them have some odd software that MAY become independent of the printer hardware. But the manufacture site should have some help. One had to offer a special UN install program to former users!

Solve : Unzip Files?

Answer»

I am probably in the wrong website for this but I couldn't get an information at the Sandisk website. I have and old Sandisk e260 MP3 player. That is not working. I was instructed to DOWNLOAD two files then drag them over to the Sandisk MP3 icon in my computer. I did but this did not nothing at all. Was later instructed to unzip the files then drag them over. Did this but not sure if I unzipped them correctly because nothing happened ! !!?!??!..........the files are called

BL_SD_boardSupportSd its a ROM FILE ( Whatever that is )

and

PP5022 this one is a MI4 file ( Whatever that is )
To me it would seem that the flash UTILITY to reinitialize the DEVICE would require it to run on the healthy drive such as hard drive and then address the Sandisk device at a lower hardware level on he USB bus since if you cant see this device in windows then there is no drag and copy feature to get the files there.

Btw is the USB port on this device free of dust, dirt, corrosion or DAMAGE, and have you tried using a different USB cable or port to connect to it?Actually I can see the Sansa music device on the Computer its the F: drive. I just can drag the mentioned files to it or open them. What next ??

Thank You

Solve : NOT SURE?

Answer»

I've been having trouble for a fee months now. Did factory reset and got a lot of stuff that didn't come with my note book G72 and don't know what is going on since this. Also did the FREE Windows 10- but this didn't help. Computer is running slow takes quite awhile to boot up runs hot and if I go to a web page it pops up with windows drivers update. So can anyone figure out my problem or not? I have a desk top that isn't booting right either but that another time one problem at a time! I'm depressed it
's Christmas time have a new born grand daughter born on 9\11 of this year and have no money to fix computers or get Christmas presents. Also fighting cancer 4 second time since JULY 2014 do chemo once a week 4 the 3 tumors I've got from my mastectomy in 06. Sorry about this part of it but maybe someone can understand where I'm coming from now. I need some help PLEASE and thank you have a MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR Hello and I hope this information helps. Best suggestion I have is to create the recovery discs and perform the system recovery setting it back to factory new condition, ((( BUT BE SURE TO CHOSE THE ONE THAT DOES NOT DESTROY YOUR PERSONAL DATA ))) or else it will make it like it was when you first got it and pictures and any data you added to it since it was purchased would be gone.

Page 114 at this PDF shows step by step on how to create them and then use them. Sorry for your health problems and I hope this information helps. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well. You will need some blank DVDs to burn to or a thumb drive or two that are at least 8GB in size if that option is available. I always go the route of burning Discs myself, although I have had some computers like my Toshiba Netbook that doesnt have an optical drive require the creation of them onto two USB flash drive sticks.

Just Noticed Reading further the optical drive was an option for this... if you dont have one you will need to borrow a external DVD Drive or buy one. A USB external drive is around $20 or LESS. Here is one similar to what I use on netbooks and systems without a DVD Burner. Installation is as EASY as plugging in USB cable to drive and then to computer and then following instructions from HP. Drivers will be automatically installed so its plug and play. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136261&cm_re=external_dvd_drive-_-27-136-261-_-Product

The manual states:
Quote

NOTE:
Use an optional external optical drive (purchased separately) to create recovery discs, or purchase recovery discs for the computer from the HP Web site.

Solve : Dell Desktop boots half way and then stops. Please help?

Answer»

I have a 2007 Dell Windows 7 desktop that will start to boot, with the green bar moving half WAY across the SCREEN and stopping in the middle. This STARTED to occur after a power outage in the neighborhood. I took the computer in to the repair SHOP twice in one day, and the computer booted perfectly fine both times at the repair shop. I tried other outlets in the same room unsuccessfully, still GETTING the Dell screen and the green line half way across the screen. I moved the computer to another room and it worked for awhile. However, following another power outage, it started doing the same thing again. Another return trip to the repair shop yielded the same result-- it boots fine there but not at home. My newer HP laptop and other electrical items work fine. I bought a new battery backup and tried plugging it into that. Same result. This is my work computer and I am desperate to find the solution. Please help. Thank you.Can you check the voltage of the plugs in that room?
