Solve : Is there a way for a screen to physicaly power off when going to sleep??

Answer»

Some screens do turn off and everything is great, but some display a message like "no display" with screen still using LIGHTS or an annoying blinking light that makes you have to go turn off the screen yourself.

Is there a software or a configuration in windows that makes those screens shut off when when the display goes to sleep as if you actually pressed the off button that is on it?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]You can buy a wall TIMER and this way its dead between certain hours when you would never be using it. Those are around $10. One guy I know has his computer on one of these to get rid of the constant 15 watt trickle of his monitor and computer and speakers etc during hours when he would never be using it. The wall timers use only a couple watts of power for the mechanical type.

There are also modern power sense devices that cost more than $10 that DETECT when one thing is in use to turn other things on etc or do the opposite to shut things off and get rid of the constant power trickle. There must be a command to type in the registry...It's not a Windows configuration issue, the monitor itself is not putting itself to sleep when Windows switches off the display output. For the blinking light there is nothing you can do, that is what the monitor does when it's sleeping. For the message on screen I'd take a look in the monitor's menu for relevant options and if possible try a different cable/interface in case that's the issue. The only option i saw in the 1st screen menu was sleep timer, and it actualy does power the screen off after 5 to 240 min but once you turn the monitor on you have to set it up again so basicaly its easier to push the "off" button on the side.

For the blinking light a solution would be to open the screen case put some electric tape over the light surrounding the button therefore seeing no light at all. I just dont feel like opening a perfectly well working screen...By the way the one that says "no display" is a ViewSonic VT2042 and I went and tried to install the official unsigned x64 DRIVERS from the official site and it failed.
So maybe its a driver issue but technically windows 7 is supposed to be able to find those automatically.Monitor drivers stopped being useful long ago. The information in the "drivers" is basically the resolution/hz capabilities of the monitor, which are retrieved via the display Interface.

Solve : Win 7-can't access anything?

Answer»

I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 and right now all I can tell you is it's an i5 PROCESSOR, 8gb something, 1TB something - I can't look right now because that is the problem. My husband uses this and said, hey I don't get a little arrow on my desktop to click on anything, the little circle just keeps GOING around. So I started looking at it and it is more screwed up than he thinks. I cannot access anything on the desktop, nor can I access anything from the start page. It tells me "System call failed." I can click on Start and it will show me everything, but it ALWAYS says System call failed when I click on it. If you go to the taskbar at the bottom, you can get on IE. I tried to update Microsoft Essentials to start running a virus scan, same message. I am running a virus scan on it now, SEEMS to be working, and I'll see what it says when it finishes. If there is a virus, I know what to do, how to send all the info to you guys using CCleaner and Malwarebytes, etc. If there is no virus, I haven't a clue as what to do next. This computer is seldom used, maybe three times a week for an hour or two, so I'm not really all that FAMILIAR with it as he's the biggest user of it. I have my own computer which is what I'm typing to you on. Any suggestions if the virus scan shows nothing - what do I do next? Thanks!
You could try a System Restore to a date before this problem started.

Solve : Factory restore time?

Answer»

Hi,
I am currently doing a factory restore on a acer laptop. The "restoring system" part went really quick and smooth. took about 10 mins. the Updating System chugged along nicely but a lot slower. Now it is on 99% and seems to be stuck (been on 99 for nearly an hour). the whole process has taken 1 hour and 48 mins. Is this normal or do I have a bigger problem??? It is my first time doing a factory reset so dont know if this is the norm or not. What do I do now?? Ok its been over an hour that its stuck on 99% now I give up but what happens next if I turn off will I be able to get back on to do anything or do I need to do something now or is all lost Is the restore media on a USB STICK or Discs, or is it just using the partition with the recovery media on it without USB stick or Discs?

To get hung at 99% could be caused by a corrupt system recovery media, hardware failure such as a ill hard drive, as well as RAM issue, or system board failure.

If you have your recovery media on a USB stick or Discs that is better than if its only on the hard drive to rebuild itself.

What is the model # of the acer laptop?

* I have had hard drives that are ill mainly cause the LOCK up at an installation or forever display the same percentage but not MOVE onwards. The drive GOES to write to a damaged portion of the drive platters or the drive controller has issues after it heats up etc and the drive fails during installation.

if, like me you have had a machine sat there trying to update for hours.

I read this page in my SEARCH for a solution:
https://blog.krissmilne.tech/windows...ng-for-updates

Following suggestion #2 and updating the Windows Update CLIENT for Windows 7 sorted out my PROBLEM. Download the latest client for your version of Windows (32 or 64 BIT) here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3135445

Quote:
Note: You will need to stop windows from checking for updates before installing the update. it worked for mine.

also, if needed two 3MB hotfixes in sequence, KB3102810 and KB3135445, after which Windows Update only TAKES a few minutes.

Solve : Transfering data from internet to excel?

Answer»
Hi

1. Is the a way to have a web page and excel spread opened at the same time on the same screen?.

2.I would like to Be ABLE to get information from the web page and post it to the spread sheet while both are opened.

I don't know if it can be done. I thought I would ask.

Thank You
If you have both opened with sized WINDOWS you could potentially have excel using 1/2 the screen and the web browser using the other half. Transfer from ONE to the other you can manually copy/paste info across unless the content is protected from copy/paste or an image form where numbers are actually an image vs ascii.

Anything like this for large amounts of DATA, you either would program a keyboard/mouse macro to run through redundant process such as using jitbit Macro recorder or another macro creation software or you can write a C# program for EXAMPLE that parses a website for information and passes that information such as comma delimited to a CSV file to be opened in excel later as a raw data import. If you're using Windows 7, becoming familiar with the Snap feature might be quite helpful to you. It's an easy way to place open two windows side-by-side, with each using half of the monitor screen. For some a video on using Snap, see https://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=using+snap+in+windows+7&view=detail&&mid=18F44DB5E3DC6886D51718F44DB5E3DC6886D517&rvsmid=18F44DB5E3DC6886D51718F44DB5E3DC6886D517&fsscr=0 or do a search on using snap in windows 7 for more. Correction: It's an easy way to place open two windows side-by-side ... Or: It's an easy way to place open two windows side-by-side ...

Solve : Boot Time Inconsistency?

Answer»

Typically, my Win 7 boot time as measured by Glary varies from 11-15 sec. One boot out of every six boots or so the boot time is 30 sec. or longer. It seems each subsequent boot to the long boot is back to 11-15 sec. Does anyone have any idea why the inconsistency? I've checked scheduled tasks, startups and auotoruns, including services, and can't find anything there. INSTALLED is 360 Total Security, and a a dozen lightweight apps, plus Mozilla THUNDERBIRD, Maxthon Coud browser, and Rollback Rx Professional. There has not been, to my knowledge, an explanation of why Windows may vary in boot time. Some system housekeeping starts without the user being informed.

Now, having SAID that, here is a recent article from in PC World which CLAIMS to have some insight. Read it and see it a helps any.
How to speed up Windows 10 boot times with Fast Startup

Solve : Computer keeps powering off instantly - is it screwed??

Answer»

Hi, any advice at all much appreciated. PC specs: Novatech FX-8 8320, 120gb SSD + 2TB hard disk, 16gb ram, windows 7 64 bit, 2.5 years old.

Had the odd random power down in the past, but over the last 2 days my PC keeps powering off instantly with no warning, and when I TURN it back on it doesn't last very long until it powers off again (about 30 mins tops in safe mode).

Things tried already:

Ran a health report, said 'avg. disk queue length 3 - disk may be at maximum capacity due to throughput and disk seeks', but looked again after a temperamental system restore and wasn't there, yet still had the problem. It also said it didn't see an antivirus software installed, but I have Avast free version installed, and ran a virus check with this which didn't come back with any viruses (said vlc and adobe needed updating, and there were some performance issues but wouldn't resolve on free version).

I tried changing the power settings to balanced, disabled the antivirus TEMPORARILY, and dusted the inside the PC with that special computer spray stuff, but none of that HELPED.

I tried a system restore in startup repair which didn't work, and tried another one from a restore point a week ago, but the PC powered down before it got anywhere. I also tried one in safe mode and got the same result, and sometimes the PC powers down right after selecting startup repair when it's booting up.

I tried a disk cleanup on the SSD, but as soon as it's starting the PC powers down.

My friend thinks I should reformat the PC, but it came with windows 7 installed on the machine and I don't have an installation disk for it, so don't know what I should do there either.

If anyone has any advice with this it'd be really appreciated, I don't really have a clue now.

Cheers!
Reformatting won't help. You might want to try a new power supplyYou should check the BIOS settings, there are two BIOS settings that need to change, Deep sleep and block sleep. Go to BIOS Disable the Deep sleep and Enable the block sleep. Update the BIOS and keep your system in under observation, if ISSUE persists then check the system with any Known Good SMPS. If still the same issue with the Known Good SMPS then need to replace the Motherboard. How did you know which BIOS he has ? ?...just curios.
Not all BIOS's have those options...Cheers, but turned out to be a hidden layer of fluff between the processor fan and heat sink, thanks anyway!WOW...never heard that one...glad yer fixed up...

Solve : Sluggish Windows 7?

Answer»

I had Win 7 machines and worked fine when purchased. Installed all the applications I wanted and still worked well. As time passed, I religiously updated windows through windows update.
Slowly but surely, the computers were slowing down. Minimised windows TOOK ages (up to 30 seconds) to normal screen size. Clicking on the file menu would take 10 seconds. These machines would be frustrating to use. No viruses, registry cleaned with Ccleaner, no applications hogging the cpu in Task Manager.
I purchased another notebook for my WIFE. A low end machine with 2Gb of ram only. She just does web browsing and emailing. I asked the store people if the computer would be responsive for those tasks. Sure! Yes, the computer (Win 8.1) was responsive even after installing Firefox and Thunderbird. It was going fine. After 3 months, She noticed that it was slowing down. Sure enough, it appeared to be a different machine. It was updating automatically.
At this point, I decided that maybe the updating causes this slowing down. I turned off all windows updating an all 3 machines. I think the win 7 machines may have improved a little (I might be imagining this), but they do appear to be a little more responsive.
CPUs don't slow down, memory does not slow down, hard disks don't slow down. It can only be software.

Is there anything to this theory that windows updates actually slows the machines down?
Thanks
Your idea, windows updates actually slows the machines down has been repeated over and over gain hundreds of times.
Here are personal suggestions.
IGNORE most registry cleaners.
De fragment your hard drive.
Allow about 3 in. for Windows to boot.
If this is a problem, set the PC to turn on by itself and log in automatically before you start your work time.
Schedule your updates to happen in the early morning hours.
After your PC has run for several minutes, check the response time of important programs. Bear in mind, load time is not the same thing as productivity. In fact, some very old programs load very quickly. Because they are very Spartan.*

* showing the indifference to comfort or luxury traditionally associated with ancient Sparta.

Put another way, fast loading means less luxury.

Just launched de-fragmentation. I started to defrag drive C: on my win 7 machine before I realised that I could just analyse first. Drive D: is fragmented 4%. I need to use it now to find out if it has improved.
Checked the Win 8.1 machine and it is setup for weekly defrag. It now shows 1% for both drive C: and D:. I don't believe that 1% defragmentation will cause that sort of slow down.
I will defrag that machine too and see what happens. For what it is worth:
Optimize Windows for better performance
The above is from Microsoft and is a general coverage of the topic. Other aties say about the sane thing.
Quote

No matter how fast or shiny computers might be when they're new, they all seem to get slower over time. That state-of-the-art PC you bought last year might not feel like such a screamer after you install a dozen programs, load it with antispyware and antivirus tools, and download untold amounts of junk from the Internet. The slowdown might happen so gradually that you hardly notice it, until one day you're trying to open a program or file and wonder, "What happened to my poor PC?"
It happens.
Can you be more specific regarding how you are using your computer when you encounter such severe sluggishness? How many programs/apps do you have open at one time? If one or more web browsers are open, how many tabs do you have open for viewing different websites?

And, please go into more detail on the hardware specs of these computers you're talking about.

Also, what protection apps (anti-virus, malware, etc.) are you using? Are you keeping them updated and are you running regular scans?

The general consensus in the forum regarding use of registry cleaners is to avoid them. Some of them - indeed, probably most of them - can definitely cause more harm than good. CCleaner has a very good reputation but, keeping in LINE with the general consensus, I'll suggest you not use the registry cleaner. What I do suggest is that you use CCleaner's Cleaner utility. Or, alternatively, use your BROWSER(s)' menu option to clear browser cache and use the Disk Cleanup utility in Windows 7.

Are you using Task Manager to search for clues to what is slowing a computer? If not, then do so. It can be a useful tool in identifying programs that are hogging CPU and memory resources.

When Windows updates are installing, are you careful to not shutdown a computer while the updates are installing?

I"m also wondering whether your electricity supply might be a cause of computer hardware degradation. You used the plural form of computer. How many computers are you talking about and were all them at the same location, using the same power source?

Solve : What application??

Answer»

Hi -
When I turn my computer on and call up my home page I get the following message on a small panel: Application can not be started. Contact the application vender. I have no idea what the application is or who the vender is. Any body have any suggestions? Thanks BobWhat do you mean, "call up my home page"? Do you mean open the browser, or is the browser already open?

Please go to the following location and tell us if there are any folders there: C:\users\[username]\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\Allan -
I am using WINDOWS 7. When I click on the start button I get a BACKGROUND PICTURE and at the bottom left corner is an E which is for the Internet explorer. When I click on the E I get my home page. My selection of terms MAY not be too good. (called up home page.) Now how do I get to "c\users\[username]\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\". I have tried every THING I can think of but on luck. The problem may have cured its self as I have seen the panel today. Thanks Bob If the problem returns, open Windows Explorer and navigate to c\users\[username]\AppData\Local\Apps\2.0\

If you see a folder there, you can delete it Allan -
Thanks for your time. I will fallow your advice. Bob

Solve : Windows 7 installation can't detect hard drive?

Answer»

I had a windows 7 system on a 250gb partition and I wanted to dual boot with Debian. I removed another partition and got about 50 gb unallocated space that I was going to use for debian.

I restarted and tried to boot into windows again (hadnt installed debian yet), and I go a message like "BOOTMGR missing". I tried to reinstall windows but the dvd can't detect the hard drive. The message is "No drives were found"

Some posts said to go into diskpart, select the windows partition and MAKE it active, but I get an error message doing that, saying "disk may be invalid because it is offline".

I was able to boot with a linux mint LIVE CD and it shows 4 partitions with 2 of them listed as windows 7 loader. http://i.imgur.com/raojwo3.png

Any idea how to fix this?Try following these instructions.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104341-bootmgr-missing-fix.htm

Prior to doing this I will suggest that since you can boot to Live Linux back up you pictures, documents, spreed sheets, and so on just in case a destructive reinstall need to be preformed. The link doesn't work :/, it just sends me to the forums index, not to a post.

Yes, I backed up the important things alreadySorry about that for some reason it did not copy and paste correctly.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104341-bootmgr-missing-fix.html

Here is one that you can copy and paste in a browser.
Code: [Select]http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/104341-bootmgr-missing-fix.htmlIt didn't work. Startup repair didnt change anything, still says drivers missing. using the command prompt I couldnt switch to C: because the "system cannot find the drive specified"

Edit: Should I try running the commands without switching to C:? I'm on X:/Sources

Edit 2: If I delete one of the windows loader partitions and install linux for now, will I be able to reinstall windows in the FUTURE?Quote

Should I try running the commands without switching to C:? I'm on X:/Sources
No you should be under the C:boot>

Quote
If I delete one of the windows loader partitions and install linux for now, will I be able to reinstall windows in the future?
You could do it that way but it is rough to it. Does not always work correctly.

Best to install windows first then Linux.

I fixed it. Searching for fixing an invalid disk I found this tutorial http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26829-convert-dynamic-disk-basic-disk.html

After doing option one the drivers appeared when booting from dvd. I didn't reinstall windows but went back to system repair and did startup repair. It took longer this TIME but when it restarted it booted directly into my previous windows system.Glad to hear it.

Now you should be able if you still want to install and dual boot with Debian.

Code 101 usually points to hardware issues, especially overheating. If you are overclocking, revert to stock. Check all possible causes of overheating, including CPU heatsink for DUST, CPU fan for correct rotation, and heatsink compound for correct installation, All thse things apply specially if this is a new build.

Thank you for your assistance. However, it don't think the computer is overheating. It only happens when first starting the computer. Then when I reboot, it doesn't give me a BSOD. For instance, it has been running since this morning after the second reboot and it isn't overheating or shutting down.Based on that i WOULD suspect a flakey PSU.Quote from: patio on April 17, 2016, 05:25:32 PM

Would that create a BSOD?Bug check 0x101 is CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT triggered by a CPU watchdog timer; CPU unresponsive or deadlocked. The solution would be to investigate your hardware. For example, try a different power supply. I told you all this above on April 17th in Reply #1.

The PSU suggestion is entirely yours, Patio.

If a PSU is near its limits, sometimes setting HDD spinup delay in the BIOS to (say) 4 seconds might calm it down a bit at system boot time, maybe?

We don't know anything at all about this system, whether it worked OK and suddenly started doing this, or whether it is a new build, or a used one newly acquired, or what. Or its specs.

Solve : Windows backup "no disc" dialog box?

Answer»

I'm attempting to run windows backup with it set to save to CD/DVD drive. It's tells me there is no disc in the drive but I've put 3 separate DVD-R disc in it so far. All 3 disc are brand new bought at Wmart today. The PC is Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop / Win 7 home 64bit. I am sure the optical drive will burn a disc. I've never used Windows backup before. What am I doing wrong?

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Hard to say. It should work.
Back up and restore: frequently asked questions

The link above is from Microsoft and might be of some help.
But look at this:
Quote

We recommend that you save your backup on an external hard drive that can hold at least 200 GB.
This would indicate that the backup will not use a DVD for a system backup. Instead, you must use an external USB hard drive.

Myself, I have not use DVDs for backup for years. I always use a hard drive.

Borrow a few different brands of media from friends...
Some burners are finicky about which discs you use.Your drive is reporting as a CD-RW / DVD drive... It can only burn 650 or 700mb CD-R or CD-RW discs. It cant burn to DVD according to what I see here.

If you have a USB stick, I'd go that route. I have used the USB stick method myself which is better vs burning discs at a cost.

See pic which is a snippet from your screenshot.

Confirmed... its not gonna burn DVD-R's according to the make/model # of that optical drive ... http://www.cnet.com/products/sony-nec-optiarc-crx880a-cd-rw-dvd-rom-combo-drive-ide-series/specs/

* I have always found it interesting how a DVD disc cant be burned at capacity of a CD in a CD-RW drive similar to how 1.2MB HD Floppies could be formatted to SD 360k many years ago to use newer 5.25" floppy disks in older drives that only supported 360k. It probably has to do with an initialization stripe on the discs at the inner most track that come blank I am guessing for them to be identified as CD or DVD media when inserted into the drive. However it could be more involved than this. I havent researched the matter.

Yes I have an extra USB stick and the backup worked fine. I never noticed this optical drive is for burning CD's only, not DVD's. I have only used it burning music CD's. Thanks for the heads-up DaveLembke! Good CATCH Dave...Thanks Patio and good to hear that the thumb drive method worked for you LectrocrewQuote from: DaveLembke on December 28, 2015, 08:17:25 AM

Burnable Discs, both CDs and DVDs, are constructed similarly to stamped discs, but rather than having a master stamped onto them, they are instead stamped with a pre-groove that is effectively a single, massive land. These lands are the parts the lens sees- the laser is fired at it, and it reflects back to the lens because of the pregroove. One can OBSERVE this pregroove pretty easily, actually- just TAKE a blank disk and hold it to the light- notice the rainbow of colours? That's the diffraction resulting from the pregroove.

The discs are burned by basically focusing the laser on the dye layer above the pregroove, which causes it to crystallize and become opaque, stopping it from reflecting light. The pregroove is a necessary feature here- and of course CD and DVD disc grooves have widely different track pitch. The pregroove is also used by drives to identify burnable discs, since the pregroove has some very tiny AMPLITUDE modulation that is used to encode information about the disc. A Cd-R/RW drive with a DVD inserted basically sees nothing- it's looking for a pregroove or a groove at the appropriate track pitch for a CD, but it can't see one. Even if it could be forced forward to burn, there is no pregroove following the groove of a CD disc, which is necessary- the pregroove is one giant land, and the burned parts are the pits.

This is unlike magnetic media where there aren't really any pre-existing structures exist on the diskette, just diskette drive conventions about how sectors and tracks are laid out, so it's up to the drive. lower-density media tends not to work so well when used as high-density media, particularly for 5-1/4" diskettes, but you could use a 1.2MB drive to format a 360K Diskette as a 1.2MB Diskette. I know because I did it ages ago without even knowing the disks were 360K because the drive was silent on the matter and "Format A:" Formatted as 1.2MB by default.

Interestingly, there was a short time where it was profitable for COMPANIES selling diskettes to market 1.44MB Floppies as 720K Diskettes, so there is a surprisingly good chance that, with the appropriate modifications to the diskette drive or the disk itself, a 720K diskette can be formatted as used as a 1.44MB Floppy diskette. I had a floppy diskette drive modified for this purpose back when it was cost-effective to purchase cheaper 720K diskettes, the infrared detection mechanism which looked for the little hole in 1.44MB Diskettes was removed and instead routed to a front panel switch. Meaning I could flip the switch and have a 720K diskette be detected as a 1.44MB diskette.
Thanks BC for that info.... interesting read. And cool floppy mod.

Oh- before anybody thinks me capable of basic soldering, I should mention that I didn't actually mod it, when I received the PC the diskette drive was in (an old 386 Server that my High School CS teacher gave me), he had already modded it ages before.

I do have a soldering iron, wick, and solder spool, but the most complicated thing I've done so far is replace the save battery in a few game boy games.

Solve : Win 7 doesn't boot up, drives are a raid all of a sudden?

Answer»

Good morning everyone, am trying to describe my issue as good as possible, so please bear with me =)

Two days ago, I went into a game of League of Legends, on the swap to the loading SCREEN I alt tabbed which then caused a bluescreen to happen.

It gave me the message: KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR and asked me to check if I have any new hard- or software with the technical information: ***STOP: 0x0000007A (0x0000000000000020, 0xFFFFFFFFC000009D, 0xFFFFF x0000000000000000) Physical memory dump FAILED with status 0xc0000001.

Over the course of the next 2 days, I've had a few bluescreens with the same message, ran CHKDSK, let it fix something and then had three following popups from Marvell Event Message:

[WARNING] Physical disk 2 is plugged out

[INFO] Physical disk 2 is plugged in

[WARNING] Physical disk 2 is plugged out

A restart solved the issue, windows wanted to do an update which is fine by me, however, when it tried to restart it couldn't boot the OS. A look into the BIOS gave me some insight on what happened: It can still find both my SSD and my HDD, however, all of a sudden they're in a raid. At first, I was able to select the RAID as a boot priority, but later on even that option vanished, leaving me with only the following three as boot options.

Removable Dev.

USB: TDK TF10 (My USB stick with the windows 7 ISO)

ATAPI CD-ROM

My question is the following: Is it the Raid that appeared all of a sudden? Can I somehow undo it? Are my drives DAMAGED? Because they do show up when I start up my PC

I have uploaded the relevant images here http://picsurge.com/g/TNWC9C

Any help you can provide is greatly appreciated, if you NEED any additional information feel free to drop me a message here!Hi

The pictures really helped. First thing is to turn off raid in the storage configuration in the bios page Main It would normally be ACHI . Then set the SSD to be the first boot device. If it still blue screens the please post the error .
When you get it booting check the antivirus software is up to date and perhaps run a disk health check with HDtune pro. What you did shouldn't have caused the bios to change to raid mode. So am unsure what might have caused the problem.

Solve : System Image in Windows 7? from MS Windows 7 operating system?

Answer»

friends

if i use System Image in (MS Windows 7) will that only image (the systems and the UPDATES for the systems portion) and (not the data and the 3rd party programs installed)?? example my window 7 + windows updates is stored on C: drive and the (data) and (programs) elsewhere on D: and also some in C: because it is partitioned?

another words i want to image both the data and all the windows 7 programs and updates. I don't want to use clonzella because it is confusing and i might mess up and loose everthing

can i use System Image in Windows 7
to image
1) just windows 7 and any updates
2) data
3) just the programs

so i will have 3 images in case my computer crashes? i can put it back to the (right partition)

thanks you all so much, regardless
Hi

I know that windows system image will do what you want. It is limited in that the whole image needs to be restored and it needs to restored from with in windows i.e no recovery media that you can start the computer with and use to restore the whole drive or just some files. I like a 3rd party program either free or paid.
My pick at the moment is EaseUS Todo Backup there is free versions up to EXCHANGE server backup.
It has good documentation and is very EASY to use. I normally setup one full backup that remains on the USB harddrive or server and then 3 or 4 daily backups that keep rolling over.
The good thing about backup software is there is the option of making recovery media and restoring whole drives or just files. Also restoring backups to different hardware. Here is the link needed for EASEUS
http://www.easeus.com/
You don't havetobuy anytghing. The free software is more than enough for general use. It can backup either partitions or the wole disk. And it can readily read its own backup format using Windows. That is to say, it letrs the Windows Explorer see inside the EASESUS backup format. Highly recommended.

Note: For best RESULTS you shold ave sosme kind of external drive.

Hi
As far as I am concerned, how about creating a system repair disk at the same window you create system image if you want to do something in case your system crashes.
Also, you can set customized settings during the backup process. You are ABLE to backup each partition/volume at the process or just backup personal data in the library. Select Let me choose in some backup window.
If you are looking for some backup software, there are tons of them on the network, and some freeware is more than enough. Google one and you'll be surprised.
By the way, I am using AOMEI Backupper. With my best.

Solve : Windows 7 starting up very slowly on laptop?

Answer»

I have a four year OLD Acer laptop with Windows 7 loaded onto it.

Until now, it worked perfectly. But now, when I power it up it sits on a black screen for 10 - 40 minutes before booting into windows. Once I'm in Windows, everything is as fast as it's always been.

I've tried disk defragging and disk cleanup, as WELL as using CCleaner, as these were THINGS I've seen recommended for similar PROBLEMS. However, these changed nothing.

Does anyone have any idea what I could do to fix this?

Any insight is appreciated.

Solve : Cannot find the Optional Update Windows 7 Ultimate?

Answer»

My friend gave me a secondhand laptop. The display language is in Dutch and I don't speak Dutch, so everytime I am using this laptop I have to open Google Translate, and it is so tiring alt-tabbing just to understand a single sentence.

OBVIOUSLY, I REALLY want to change the display language to English. BUT the Windows 7 version installed here is Home Premium, which doesn't support MLI - which is available on Enterprise and Ultimate only. Fortunately, there is this Windows Anytime Upgrade, and I used that feature. But I didn't PURCHASE a key instead I browse for a free one. And it kind of works because when I checked on the System Information, under Windows Edition, it now says Windows 7 Ultimate/Copyright/SP1.

So my NEXT step is where I am now stuck. I cannot find the Optional Updates option. I already checked the View Update History and shows Windows Update-Agent 7.6.7600.320 as the recent update which was 10 days ago and after that was updates from 2014. Also checked the Restore Hidden Updates but nothing was in there. Also the Change Settings, I already checked the Recommended Updates. Nothing. Please help me. You are using an illegal key, we will not assist with it.

That said, your home premium key is not tied to Dutch as far as I'm aware. It just means that you can't change the language on the fly with home premium. You should however be able to reinstall Windows 7 home premium using the key in the machine and pick the correct language during the installation process.Topic CLOSED.

Solve : Issues after crash?

Answer»

So I was working in InDesign while I had both Photoshop and Illustrator up at the same time, which I know not to do since I only have 4gb of RAM, but I was in a hurry... Anyway, The computer froze, except for my mouse and so I hard rebooted it from the tower, and started up in safe mode to save my documents. It was then that I noticed that all my desktop icons were huge, and my task bar at the bottom was plain white instead of the STANDARD Windows 7 blue, as well as the the border of all my windows were boxy and white instead of the normal blue, furthermore any and all webpages had a white background.

I can live with the task bar and windows being different from the Windows 7 Standard, but I would really like help SOLVING the issue of my webpages being incomplete.

I saved my files and restarted the computer normally. The icons were the same size but problems with the toolbar, window borders, and webpage's continued. My computer crashed again, neither time giving me the "blue screen" but rather simply freezing except for the mouse, thought the second time the mouse wasn't as responsive and the caps lock button did not respond with a corresponding keyboard light. Again I started the computer up normally but all the issues remained.

That was about three weeks ago, and the issues have not resolved themselves. I was hoping that maybe someone here could help me out, or has had a similar problem and could let me know what they did to resolve the issue.

I have attached images of what I'm seeing to help identify the issue, I know it's kind of bad but I'll TRY to describe it. (Sorry I just used paint) So, what you're looking at is a webpage, and a window I copy pasted on top. As you can see the webpage background is missing, you can check the Yahoo! webpage right now as this is a current screen capture. You can clearly see what is missing. As well as the task bar being white. The window is also not the Windows 7 standard.

Thanks so much for your time!

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Your desktop icons are (were?) huge because Safe Mode uses a screen resolution of 800x600 pixels, which is usually LOWER than the resolution of the monitors/displays people use.

Safe mode also disables all themes. This leaves the "default" theme- Windows Classic. This is why your Windows and Taskbar look different.

Did you adjust any settings while in safe mode? The Personalization Window you pasted shows you are using the Classic theme. Switch it to "Windows 7 Default" which should re-enable themes and Desktop compositing. It's also possible that disk corruption has corrupted the files necessary to use the Aero theme.

When I go to Yahoo in any browser, the background is white. I'm not sure what you expect the background to be. Unless you are referring to the icons that appear next to each link, on the sidebar. It seems to look fine on the test system running Win7 when I booted into Safe mode and used Firefox, unless it is a Firefox configuration option of some sort.

One possible cause of the freezing issue would be that the system DRIVE is failing. Failing Hard Disks tend to hang actions dealing with the disk and then disappear from the system, in my experience. Taxing the system with applications that use more memory than you have in the system will cause a lot of disk swapping, and the disk is being used by low-level memory management processes so it tends to lead to the system hanging if the drive decides to stop cooperating. I've had similar behaviour occur on a few systems and the issues disappeared when replacing the system drive. (And, equally important, no data was lost)

Here is a short list of things I have not finished reading.

Can I stream from a windows 7 computer

http://www.pcmag.com/slideshow/story/331464/13-hidden-roku-tricks-for-streaming-success

This is what the Roku looks like:

I also have a Chrome cast thing:

Here is my problem. I have some education videos I have downloaded, legally, and I what my wife to see in in the bedroom. We have a TV there with a Roku. So I want to broadcast the videos from my PC to the Roku in the bedroom.
Any help welcome!

You can use Windows Media Player on your PC as a DLNA SERVER (see your first link). Install the Roku Media Player app on your Roku and it should be able to find the DLNA server and play videos from it.

Also, if your PC supports Miracast, you can enable it on the Roku and send the output from your PC to the Roku. GOOGLE Miracast on Roku for how to enable.

Personally, I use Plex media server coupled with the Plrx app on my Roku.

Solve : W7 UPDATE TO W10?

Answer»

I am intending to update from W7 to W10 using the automatic update routine that appears regularly (blue message box).

Will ALL of my existing settings come across without problems to W10 eg IE favourites, all of my (4) user accounts and passwords, Hotmail and G-mail settings and passwords and my other email accounts (waitrose just mail and 1&1) settings and passwords?

In short, is there anything that works fine and dandy now in W7 which might not come across to W10 (or appear in W10 but not work properly)?
You are only updating the OS, not other programs. You should be fine.In the last few days I have seen loads of YouTube videos extolling the wonders and virtues of w10!

However, I have also read loads of reviews from those who bitterly regretted upgrading from w7 to w10!

So I am tempted NOT to take the free upgrade to w10 and wait and SEE what happens after July. Maybe MS will extend the free upgrade period?

I have no issues or problems with my w7 system -it does everything I WANT. My only concern is that it will be totally unsupported after 2020 - sounds a long time away but is only around 3+ years!

Maybe the best option is to wait and eventually buy new hardware with w10 pre-installed. I will forfeit the free upgrade - but some who have upgraded to w10 have had so many problems which have then cost to fix - so they have then spent more than they saved on the free upgrade!

Thoughts on my proposed action would be welcome.
Nobody can tell you what to do. I can tell you I have W10 on two systems, W8 on several and W7 on a couple. I'm happy with all of them. It's just an operating system. Your best bet is to create an image of your system drive (Acronis True Image, Macrium Reflect, ETC) to an off-disc medium and then upgrade to W10. If you're happy, great. If not, restore the image.Thanks. As a non-techhie 'silver surfer' using w7 ONLY for e-mail, correspondence (Word) and web surfing (ie no games or videos and few piccies) - all of which w7 does well for me - I intend to stay with w7 - having read quite of lot of 'pro' and 'con- articles on whether or not to upgrade to w10.

If I upgraded to w10 I would not be able to deal with any problems so would have to call 'my man' in to fix - and pay!!

My only concern is what to do as 2020 draws nearer (when support for w7 will stop)? Time passes quickly! Any ideas? Quote

My only concern is what to do as 2020 draws nearer (when support for w7 will stop)? Time passes quickly! Any ideas?

In order to decide how to proceed, it's good to understand exactly what it means when Windows 7 will leave the Extended support phase in 2020.

The main thing worth considering is that it will no longer receive security updates. This is obviously not an altogether trivial concern, of course; having security updates is very useful for ensuring the system is secure.

One consideration is that- for the most part- security issues in Windows are not how people get malware or other undesirable software on their systems; typically the way that happens is not through a software exploit, but via user exploits- convincing you to "go ahead and run that program, it has exactly what you need, and yeah sure it's safe, just disable your AV" and the like. Many of the security updates released for Windows which sound scary are somewhat innocuous, and only cover very particular scenarios. occasionally there is a more major issue found that has wider implications or makes it easier for a system to be infected, but other than that, even without security updates one can usually be just fine continuing to use the unsupported Operating System. This is particularly true in the described use-case you provide; as long as you keep the browser up to date you should be no less safe over all than you are now in terms of security.

Beyond that, Win7 will continue to run without issue overall. Just as earlier Windows versions can still run today. That is, once the support date passes they won't give you error messages telling you you MUST upgrade.

Solve : Copy & Paste doesn't work properly?

Answer»

I can only copy and PASTE within documents by using manual keystrokes after clicking the mouse somewhere on the page. Will it help to reinstall my MICROSOFT Office Home and Student 2007 edition? Is it a mouse or driver problem. What do you think?Sounds like you might be trying to copy/paste a protected page where copy/paste is disabled for right-click MENU top copy/paste. You might be stuck to the keystroke method. Do other web pages not associated with the one giving you this TROUBLE have no issues?

Solve : Can I make a USB windows XP + 7 + 8 + 10 Installer AIO??

Answer»

I succesfully created a single iso for win7 that includes both 32bit +64BIT with english + french.
It works smoothly with rufus.
I would like to know if on a single usb i could have more versions of windows on it, and also create the same i did with win XP, 8 and 10 (single iso that has 32+64bit & english+french)
without having to wait for the long easy2boot menu, i work on slow computers and it takes a lot of time to boot.Yes, that t can be done. But why?
It would seem to be novelty that could undermine copyrights.

Commercial firms wish to MAKE their PRODUCES different and avoid anything that would be more useful that it needs to be.

I doubt anybody here wants to help you. The idea does not fill a great need.
I simply want a swiss knife usb drive, its as simple as that.
I already have one with all the dos related tools, and i want one with at least xp and win7 (both i have with my own official licence keys), i dont care MUCH for win 8 or 10.
I actually own 6 diffenrent pcs and some have issues i have yet resolved. Older ones need xp and newer one run on win7.

If you already built the one you speak of you should be able to build the rest...no ? ?Well i would like to merge win xp english/french in a single iso but so far i have one working with all separate isosThey cannot be merged...

Solve : Win 10 corrupts my windows 7?

Answer»

I had a look see and here's the meat of an article that describes it:

Quote

Now, after two weeks of TALKS with Microsoft, the company has admitted to me that the problem is very real…The symptoms follow two paths. For some they were using their computer as normal, were prompted for a restart due for standard updates and on reboot found the Window 10 installation was under way. For others they checked their Windows update history and found Windows 10 had tried but failed to install itself without permission over and over again. (screenshots at the link)

[...]

According to Microsoft the fault lies with a bug in an automatic update it began rolling out to Windows 7 and Windows 8 users in August which triggered the attempted installations. Microsoft didn’t disclose which specific update it was, but confirmed it left the error code ‘0×80240020’ (sometimes recorded as ‘080240020’) in Windows log files when upgrade attempts failed.

As the upgrade attempts all happened silently in the background, those affected would only know Windows 10 would attempt to update once they restarted their computer. For those computers where the update began but failed in the background (APPARENTLY a high proportion) they’d be none the wiser without checking their installation history between August and November.

[...]

So what’s the state of play now? Microsoft claims the bug has been fixed and there should be no further background attempts to install Windows 10 on unsuspecting users. The good news is those who contacted me have also confirmed the repeated installation attempts have now stopped.Of course the wider problem for Microsoft here is issue of crying wolf. Just last MONTH another bug in Windows Update for Windows 7 and Windows 8 automatically checked the optional tick box to upgrade PCs to Windows 10. Microsoft declared this ‘an accident’. (links at the site for more info)

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/11/10/microsoft-admits-windows-10-automatic-installs/
Hmmm...

I have 2 PC's runnin 7...and 1 with 8.1...how come it has happened on them ? ?Quote

"bug"

"an accident"

Interesting...I don't have log entries for it here - but software bugs can miss certain installations where some action/configuration was done which stopped the bug from triggering.

What GETS my GOAT is the total lack of a simple checkbox in Windows that says "Stop all attempts at Windows 10 integration" and Microsoft really do have ulterior motives here not to have such an option, and to be forcing this, and unhiding the hidden win 10 updates etc etc.
Was that meant to be a "has" re your Win 7 and 8.1 Patio?

I ask because I often type has when I mean hasn't, and can where I mean can't. It's a bizarrely nasty typo for me, as it turns the phrase right around.hasn't.....sorry.

Solve : Best way to set up RAID 0 on a new build??

Answer»

Id like to set up raid 0 on my new build (MSI x99a Raider motherboard and two 500gig SSDs) I'm wondering if I should do that somehow in Bios and then install windows (7 pro, 64 bit), or if I should install windows on one drive and then set it up AFTERWARDS?Its best to set it up first in hardware as a hardware controlled RAID as for when using Windows to set it up it then becomes a software simulated RAID which I would trust less. The software based RAID works most of the time, but there are also performance gains in using hardware based RAID with hardware that has built in RAID. This is why hardware based RAID is the best performance and reliability for servers. The only reason to go with using the OS for configuring a software based RAID would be if you have a system that doesnt have a RAID controller built into it.I'll just add to the above that if you install Windows on the drive, you can't then use Windows to create a RAID 0 array using that drive (as far as I know). So, you would NEED to set it up in the BIOS anyway unless these drives are not for the OS. Two caveats - the Intel onboard RAID is not true hardware RAID, this isn't really an ISSUE in most cases and as you're intending to use RAID 0, it won't matter much. However secondly, what is your use case for wanting to use RAID 0? RAIDing two SSDs will more than likely have no noticeable performance impact and you're doubling your chance of losing everything on the drives since if one fails, you can't recover the data from the other drive. I can't think of any good reasons to go with RAID 0 for the OS drive, if these are for a secondary drive then I would still struggle to think of many good uses.
I don't mean to RAIN on your parade at all, just making sure you know what you're letting yourself in for in terms of possible failures and the lack of increased usable/noticeable performance in almost all cases.

Solve : Problems with downloads dropping to 0kbps, have been trying to fix for ages. =)?

Answer»

Hi there everyone,

First of all this website is amazing and it's already helped me to no end, and until today i didn't EVEN have an account.

That being SAID i have spent the last month or so talking to my internet providers and friends and searching google for a fix, with as of yet no luck.
The problem is with me trying to download things from websites or updating installed programs. The thing is this problem does not occur with everything, so even as i write this i know it sounds a little dodgy from the get go, I'll explain further.

I have spoken to sky who are my ISP and they have sent me out a new router to try and solve the issue with no luck, ive been through everything they can suggest, including: turning everything off and on, changing my micro filter, using the master socket, using the test socket, changing the wifi channel (though the problem is still there with an Ethernet only connection), i have done there websites self help a few times and have no results. After talking to them over the past few weeks and letting them do line checks and everything else they can do on there end i have come to the conclusion its a problem with my laptop, as every check they have carried out has always come up ok.

The laptop is an Alienware M17xr3,
-intel core i7-2820QM CPU with 2.30GHz
-24g ddr3 ram
-running onboard graphics (amd card broken down a good while ago)
-has an ssd and a sata hdd

After looking for a few fixes and system restoring i have formatted my computer with a fresh installation of windows 7, hopefully ensuring nothing is wrong with my settings somehow that i may have overlooked. But still the problem persists, which i now have come to realise i haven't truly explained what the problem is. The problem occurs when im downloading something, the download will start and the speed will be fine for a few seconds, then the download rate will fall quickly and within a few seconds drop to 0 kbps, after leaving it to think even overnight it hasn't ever picked up a dropped download.

This problem does not occur with everything however, for example if i download a game from steam it normally downloads fine, sometimes a little slower than i would like but otherwise its been ok. and i have even tried a sky approved test download, just a random zipped file from a website i cant remember which was 200mb in size, it downloaded maybe a little slower than expected but it still downloaded just fine. But if i try to update league of legends for example, or a large handful of other random game clients or even skype it wont download, or at least it'll download only for a few seconds before it drops in speed and soon after stops completely.

I appreciate that this question is convoluted and it might just be that my laptop is now running on fumes because of its age, but if anyone has a suggestion i would be very grateful to hear it, thank you for getting this far down the post and sticking with my bad description of the problem. Do you have any internet security software running which can interfere with downloading?

Only time I ever ran into an issue with a game update it was one of the NCsoft games called Aion and I didnt want to be a SEED on the torrent network used for updates. I shut off the seed so I could only update but not share the update with others. I did this because I was on a lesser bandwidth internet package and didnt have any upload bandwidth to spare for others with VoIP and everyone else in home also needing to share what was then 5/1mbps bandwidth.

Messing around with Aion and WORLD of Warcraft and some others, I soon found myself unable to download updates. It would do just as you stated start to download and then the value for data communicating would get lesser and lesser until it was at 0 but it wouldnt error out. To fix this I had to uninstall and reinstall all games that I tampered with the update torrent with.

For fact that its affecting games and skype I am thinking it might be an internet security package maybe that needs to be turned off for a short while to see if that clears up the issue. If the problem clears up then you need to find a way to white list the games/programs that are getting choked off for bandwidth.

Also have you checked your system lately for virus's or MALWARE which can try to redirect the traffic on you breaking downloads?Do you room on your harddrive for the downloads?Heya guys,

I've tried turning off the firewall and even my antivirus for certain downloads, and also i've tried multiple places to download from, still cant update league even though friends have tried the same downloads as me to double check the sites are working correctly and theirs has worked. I have double checked for viruses and even installed my antivirus from a cd when i did the recent format, so that was in place from the moment i connected to the internet. =/

Also i have plenty of space, i wish it was that simple but still a good suggestion, having just formatted the computer to try and solve the problem that way.

Thank you for suggesting fixes though, especially so soon.I would call your ISP....they can do an onsite test...no charge.
Cause it certainly doesn't sound normal...unless of course these are torrent sites we're speaking of...if so all bets are off.I have spoken to my isp for hours and hours and they say everything from there point of view is fine, unfortunately that probably means the problem is with my computer. Also all the downloads that im speaking of are non torrent direct from site or server downloads such as game updates and client downloads. Thanks for the suggestion though all the same. Are you currently using a DLoad manager ? ?
If so disable and test again...One other test would be id you had another computer to try downloading the same content.... do they have same problem?

Invite a friend over to download and test with their computer if you dont have a second computer to test with. OR go to their place and use their internet connection and see if the problem is gone at their internet connection with your computer.Hey again guys,

I have no download manager or anything like that, i have tried using one to see if it will work but still no luck. also my friends come round and it works just fine for him but not me, and i have been to his and he can still download but not me. Thanks for the suggestions though, hopefully ill get to the bottom of this soon.

Solve : WINDOWS BACK-UP?

Answer»

I am intending to update from W7 to W10 and want to ensure that I first take a complete back-up.

At the moment, when I back up (to my external hard drive) a message comes up at the end to say that the back up completed successfully but that not all of my files were backed up! It doesn't tell me which files were excluded.

Why are some files not backed up? Is there any way I can 'force' a full back up or at least find out which files are not being backed up?Yes, you need to use another backup program.
An image file is a file that REPRESENTS the complete contents of your disk drive.
There are too many free backup programs. So it is hard for me to recommend one above another. Here is a LIST:
http://pcsupport.about.com/od/backup/tp/free-backup-software.htm
The one I use is EaseUS Todo Backup
But there are many others just as good.
If you want to insure you have a complete backup, use either Acronis True Image (not free) or Macrium Reflect (free) create a disc image.Quote from: Jeffrey on March 26, 2016, 02:10:02 PM

when I back up (to my external hard drive) a message comes up at the end to say that the back up completed successfully but that not all of my files were backed up!

I would suspect if a backup, described by the software as "successful", excluded some files these might be TEMPORARY files which are not necessary for a successful restore, such as hibernation and page files. These, if present in a restored OS partition, are going to be overwritten the first time it runs, or re-created if they aren't present, so it would be wasteful to include them in an ordinary image backup. They are sometimes desired in legal investigations so you generally have the choice to back them up or not.

I use Macrium Reflect, which has a free edition, and you have the choice in the SETTINGS to include these files or not. I think most image backup software has this option.

Solve : Windows 7 BSOD issues, are they Intel graphics related??

Answer»

Hi, can someone with a better eye dissect two recent BSOD minidumps for me? Specifically the 2016 one. For a while I've been experiencing BSOD problems, which later I realize it gets triggered only after using my machine a certain way, I'm suspecting part of the culprit could be opening a WebMIDI application in chrome, not sure. Essentially, I know they pretty much never happen if I avoid certain tasks, even over the course of several days of runtime, which is attainable. But then, I seem to randomly trigger these BSODs the quickest if I combine running a WebMIDI application with a good deal of webmidi and webaudio usage, a running virtual machine doing the same things, and doing things in the background like HD YouTube, just waiting for the crashes.

Also, I'm having suspicion that the bluescreen crashes are directly the fault of the Intel drivers I have, because the MiniDumps I have tend to mention Intel HD Graphics a lot, but not entirely sure.

I already started an Intel graphics forum topic about it (along with earlier minidumps, dxdiag.etc), where a intel employee responded saying they've updated the driver and I should test with the current version, which I did. I'm currently on 15.36.28.4332 (10.18.14.4332), and still getting the same issue. I'm just not sure if I should continue blaming it on that or not, and thus bother replying to the topic? Or, could this be an entirely different issue altogether?

I'm currently using a Sager NP4658, running a copy of Windows 7 Professional SP1 from college, all drivers came from the Sager website, except for the updates that came directly from GeForce Experience and Intel. I know for a fact that Malware is completely out of the picture as I'm aware of everything I put on my system, know how to avoid PUP, and Malwarebytes and MSE full scans don't find anything.

==================================================
I should also note that a couple of the semi-recent BSODs aren't being listed in there, mainly because I just found out it wasn't producing Minidump files when I had Kernel Memory Dump on, and I decided to change back to Small Memory Dump mode because I wasn't getting any output. I think could be related to either the set location (desktop/crashes), disk space I got left on C (62gb of 476gb), or the fact that bluescreens tend to show up as black on this laptop. You have multiple and varied errors. Typically this is caused by either hardware failure (anything from the motherboard to the cpu to the ram, etc) or malware. It could be something else, but these are the usual culprits.

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new SW, virus, error, etc)?

2) Do the errors occur when you are doing something specific or are they random?

3) Let's check the ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

4) Please run full system scans with BOTH your installed AV and with MalwareBytes

5) Look in device manager. Are there any yellow or red symbols?

1. Many of the earlier BSODs, specifically the ones with BazisVirtualCDBus.sys on them tended to be caused by the driver included by the program "WinCDEmu", which I later found out was a poorly written driver that's very prone to random BSODs. I uninstalled the program, as well as carefully removing the driver file and a few registry traces of the program/driver manually. After I did that, I NOTICED my random BSODs went down very significantly. I can't remember very well now, but I think for a while didn't have much of an issue.

2. I think it was around June, ironically around the same time period that one of my favorite websites added HTML5 WebMIDI INTEGRATION (but I didn't make that connection initially), when I noticed it becoming an issue again. I eventually found that these are much more likely to happen when I'm doing specific things, like going on a website that loads the WebMIDI engine or things related to that. Since that finding, I found myself only running that website on either another laptop or inside of a VMWare virtual machine that's also running Windows 7. In both cases, I found that I was able to sustain a much LONGER period of runtime without running into a BSOD, or none at all before I restart. This has prompted me to make a Chromium report about it just in case it's the fault of Chrome, in which I got no luck and someone agreeing that it could be caused by something within the Intel Graphics driver.

As a side note: I tend to be a user, who tends to open chrome with a lot of tabs, and keep it open for at least a days worth before I bother restarting my browser at all. Also, I restart my machine occasionally, just not very often, but it depends. I have 16GB of ram on my system, and this workload itself may or may not use up or 'exceed' my physical memory. That said, this doesn't seem to have anything to do with the problem nor does it seem to be causing the crashes, unless I'm doing the specific tasks that to me seems to re-produce the random BSODs reasonably quick.

3. While I'm a little doubtful this'll be the case, I'll run two full passes of Memtest just in case a bit later anyway.

4. Device Manager has zero yellow or red symbols, the only thing that it tries to bring to my attention is a white arrow next to my internal Bluetooth adapter, because I always keep that intentionally disabled when I'm not using it.So this happens mostly (if not exclusively) when using Chrome on certain sites? JUST FOR TESTING PURPOSES, please stop using Chrome for a day or 3 and use any other browser (Firefox, Opera, IE, whatever). Also, please try shutting down the machine more frequently. Let's see if either or both of these measures help at all.

You don't seem to have had any bsod's since December (and then only 1) and one in November. And again, the ones you did have are all over the place. That makes this a very difficult situation to troubleshoot.

Solve : Random BSOD error 0x124?

Answer»

I'm getting a random BSOD with the error code 0x124. This is just after formatting and reinstalling WINDOWS on my ssd. I'm attaching my .dmp file, so you can take a look. It's hal.dll that is causing the issue.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]UPDATE:
I think I KNOW what the problem is, will be back after I've tweaked something in the bios.Guessing you might have found this?

http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/250327-random-bsod-x124-caused-hal-dll.html

Hopefully your not looking at a CPU swap like this PERSON did. Very very rare to have a CPU the cause of the issue. Looks like they UPGRADED from AMD X6 to an x8 ( 6-core to an 8-core CPU and that fixed it.

What are you running for system specs and manufacture/part numbers of motherboard and anything else to share on this?

Did this error pop up after a recent CPU upgrade? A HAL issue is hardware related usually!

Solve : Opening FF Browser vs opening new tab?

Answer»

I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium OS.
When I open Firefox browser it goes to my homepage which is GOOGLE search. When I start to enter a search term it autocompletes several possible options in a dropdown menu.

When I open a new tab it shows a page with multiple choices of sites I have visited in history. And when I start to enter a search term it does not autocomplete any options.

Question is either how do I make it autocomplete options on the page that loads when I open a new tab?
or
How do I make it go straight to my 'Google' search homepage when I open a new tab?

Attached are examples of each page when entering the partial search term for 'american pharoh'

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]1st page of Options...Check "Don't load tabs until selected"...

This will open blank new tabs.I don't know if Patio's answer works with Firefox after version 41???

The new tab (the one with rows of thumbnails is the Firefox default for a new tab (the url is about:newtab). I know of at least 2 Firefox add-ons that allow changing this, there are probably others:

This is the one I use:

Classic Theme Restorer

Does lots of handy things including new tab choices

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-gb/firefox/addon/classicthemerestorer/

In its Options choose "Tabs (2)" and check (tick) "Custom new tab page url" and type the url of your desired page that you want to see when you open a new tab.

or just a new tab chooser add-on

New Tab Override

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/

In its Options, various choices for new tab: about:blank, about:home, about:newtab, Homepage, custom url, or LINK from clipboard

Or do nothing. Just select google in the page with history.
Screen shot attached.
I just click on the Google thing iin new tab page. The it behaves like you expect it would.

That is what he/she says they don't want to have to do.
Well, I am 78 years OLD -
and not to weak to do TWO mouse clicks. Patio: The "Don't load tabs until selected" BOX was already checked.

Salmon Trout: Using the 'Classic Theme Restorer' add-on and entering google.com as the"Custom new tab page url" solved my problem. Many thanks!

Geek-9pm: I'm only 55 but I've got 78 million hard miles on me and mouse clicks are getting to be a chore for me now days. lol

As usual, thanks to all 3 of you. You guys 'rock'!

Solve : KB3133977 Freezes ASUS comps, win7 64 bit?

Answer»

update KB3133977 Freezes ASUS computers that are running Win7 64bit

Read here:

http://news.softpedia.com/news/botch...s-503706.shtml
and here:
http://www.infoworld.com/article/30...us-pcs-to-freeze.html#tk.rss_microsoftwindows

The Microsoft article for this update admits this to be a known issue.

the update was also offered on Acer and Dell ... I checked... not needed.

this info CAME from another thread.
http://www.askwoody.com/2016/recomme...rds-to-freeze/hmm I have an ASUS X401A such as this one here http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834231360 and downgraded from 8 - 64 to 7-64 and no problems yet. Been running Windows 7 64 bit for over a year now on that ASUS laptop.its good to know you haven't had issues.

maybe like me, youve hidden the entry, as mentioned in my earlier post. I don't use BitLocker, so it isn't something I'd install but I want to be sure i don't install it. The monthly W10 Cumulative update prevents both of my HP W10 desktops from booting. I have to hide the update before it installs. I also make sure to create an IMAGE of my system partitions with Acronis True Image every Monday just in case.Quote

I also make sure to create an image of my system partitions with Acronis True Image every Monday just in case.

hmm never thought of using acronis on a more regular basis myself such as weekly. I kinda left that up to restore points and if a restore point is unavailable then refer to image as last hope before a manual rebuild of it all. With my data stored not on the system hard drive it allows me to rebuild without wiping out my data and that data on the data drive is also backed up to a group of 3 x 32GB USB sticks labelled A, B, C and I backup daily to them in a rotation. So I can go back up to 3 days if needed. I also for most important data back it up to a 3TB external HDD, but only connect that after running through the motions of a full system scan with latest definitions and then when I know the system is clean, connect the 3TB drive and back up data.

(*Note: I do this full scan before connection the 3TB drive out of what happened in the mid 1990s to me when I got bit by a virus that came bundled with free dos games I was downloading that spread like fire to all media attached to the system. Each floppy disk I mounted in the system was instantly infected. I didnt know I had a virus, but when reading disks and performing a DIR command it would report false capacity of disks and random ascii. I thought it was a dirty floppy drive, so I swapped the drive. That didnt change anything so I decided to wipe my system and reinstall the OS, well everything was ok until I went to add my data back to the build and reintroduced the infected disks and then the system was infected again and I finally suspected it must be a virus. I then got Norton and ran that and sure enough i had a virus and it cleaned it but all data on the disks was ruined. I threw away a pile of floppies that I knew were infected and scanned a bunch of OTHERS that I WANTED to attempt to save, but it hit my data pretty hard. So since then I get nervous when connecting an external with my backups as to make sure I am not going to ruin all my data. BUT I also run an antivirus these days whereas in years past, I didnt because computers were weaker and Norton for example showed a definite performance impact with its realtime scanner service on a Pentium II and III system back in the day.) Its nice that modern multiple core systems are powerful enough to JUGGLE a realtime scanner without impacting performance. I have a friend who is into optimization and he swears by not running an AV because he wants maximum performance. He also goes in and disables default services not needed etc to optimize. I dont need my system to be 1% faster etc, so I just run standard build. If I need more performance I might overclock or CPU, GPU, RAM, or SSD upgrade instead I disable system restore on all of my systems and use True Image in its place. I'm not suggesting others do this, only mentioning what I do Curious as to the benefit of not using system restore points? Hard Drive space conservation or other?Imaging can sometimes be quicker than the wonderful Win System Restore...

BTW i image weekly as well...Sunday at 2 AM...
On the few occasions over the years that I've needed system restore I've found it to be less than reliable. Never had any issues with True Image. So if I'm not going to rely on system restore there's no reason to enable it.

Solve : Windows 7 Install problems?

Answer»

Here's my question, I recently just built my new gaming PC, i have an I5 6500, a Gigabyte H170-Gaming 3 motherboard, stock heat sink for now, 16 gb corsair vengeance DDR4 ram, a western digital 1TB hard drive, and a GTX 680 by EVGA later to be UPGRADED. I have been trying to INSTALL windows 7 for the past couple hours to no avail. i have a genuine copy. I lost the disk but they GAVE me a copy to download and install from on a disk. so my problem is, the install GETS to about 50% of the "expanding windows files" part, stops going higher, then comes up with an error saying windows could not install files, they may be corrupt or missing.
whats wrong with this? can anyone help me please? i want to get my new build up and runningAre you sure the hard drive is healthy? A unhealthy hard drive can cause this.

If you have another hard drive to place into the system and try again that would be helpful. Additionally other option is to borrow someone elses Windows 7 DVD and install from that and then USE your key. If you get the same results with someone elses oem Windows 7 DVD. This DVD can not be a Recovery Set DVD, it has to be the one that was purchased as a new build installation. If you get the same results with the 1TB drive then the drive is suspect. If it works and gets past this point then the media you started with has an issue.

Solve : Can we use dos bootable tools in a "virtual dos" running on windows 7 64x?

Answer»

And if so, can it run equally fast or even faster? or is there nothing like the real dos for these TOOLS, such as hdd regenerator and low LEVEL formatting tools.
Also could it recognize THINGS that dos would not recognize such a 3.0 usb PORTS and such?
Thank youNo idea what virtual DOS in Win7 means...
If you mean compatibility mode No...it's not DOS.Like dosbox or VMware Player. You need to explain what is meant by 'bookable tools'.

The VM on a common PC does not visualize the boot up thing.geek, your parrot can't spell 'believe'.

Solve : Space on disk D constantly decreasing?!?

Answer»

So, a couple days ago, I used to have a little over 3 GB of free SPACE out of 125 GB on my D drive. I moved some stuff of about 1 GB from D to C, and while it TOOK up space in C, the move didn't clear any space on disk D. A little while later, after constantly refreshing the page, the amount of free space being shown on D dwindled down to 1.09 GB. And now, two days later, it shows that there is only 3.37 MB of free space left in D, even when I neither added, deleted, moved, copied or did anything with the files on D!

When I look up the total of the space taken up by the files in the drive, I find that they only use 102 GB. So where does the rest of the space go? And why does the free space keep decreasing when I'm doing practically NOTHING, and how can I make it stop?!

Also, my recycle bin is empty and restore POINTS for D are turned off. I've tried to run disk cleanup, but there's nothing to cleanup.I suggest you start by RUNNING tree size (https://www.jam-software.com/treesize_free/) to see where the space is being used. You also might want to run full scans with both your installed anti virus app as well as with MalwareBytes.

Solve : Compaq Presario SR5123WM turns off halfway through boot?

Answer» PC was working just fine a few days ago, then this happened.

First, I couldn't get it to turn on so I unplugged the power cord compressed the start button counted 50 times reattached the power cord and it started.

I was attempting to repair it once I figured out something was terribly wrong. Then five or so minutes into repairs the system shut down. I've tried this method six times and the same thing keep happening.

The power supply is showing green on the back on the PC.

Now I'm wondering if I need a new motherboard. The PC is and HP/Compaq SR5123WM and it's nine years old. And there is no support from HP for this unit.

But it works fine when it's working.

Please don't tell me I need to trash this PC. Every picture of my grandchildren and movies are stored in the pc. At this point I cannot RETRIEVE them.

Please tell me this can be fixed for a moderate repair cost. It's been the best pc I've ever had.

Thanks in advance for replies. Help.Based on the details you have given, the most COMMON problems are:
A. Failing power supply
B. Failing RAM stick
C. Failing hard drive.

The fact that the PSU has a green light has little value. There are a number of things the PSU has to do. The green light only means that part of it is on.

This PC is rather old. Have you ever cleaned out the dust? All of the dust?
I've kept the PC clean over the years.

So, there is no way to fix it, then? No, you can fix it if you find out what is wrong.
You test by SUBSTITUTION or elimination.
I forgot to mention, replace the CMOS cell.
Next, check the BIOS and see if the settings are correct.
Try a good power supply to see if it makes a difference.
Also try to start up with no hard drive.
And remove the DVD drive. Maybe it is failing.
Check the contacts of the RAM modules.
Even try no RAM and see what it does. It should start and turn on the beeper.

Above are the things most techs would do anyway.
Replacing the Motherboard is a last choice because of cost and time. And you might harm a new motherboard if thee was some other kind of problem.
OS is Windows Vista.

I figured out the problem - it's the Power Supply Box.

However, I can't get it out of the tower.

I unscrewed all the ones relating to the PSU but it won't budge out of the tower.

Any ideas? It is always the last screw you remove.
Look here:
http://www.manualguru.com/hp/compaq-presario-sr5123wm-desktop-pc/upgrade-and-service-guide
Find the page were then show how...I've looked through 32 pages and cannot find a page that states removal of the power supply unit.

Can you tell me which page, please? I guess I missed it. Sorry. Right. The show the back side, but never point out the screws that hold the PSU to the box. Sorry, I thought there would be a setter view on the read side.

This is best I can find:
http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-replace-your-desktop-pcs-power-supply.html
There are about four outer screws the hold the PSU up to that back of the case. The others hold the fan.On a few MODELS there t might be one interior screw to give more support.

You Tube;
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7OM3CzGxxyo
Does that help any?

There is a latch below the PSU that needs pressed after screws are removed...

See Here...Dismiss the prior post about not being able to get the box out.

That little screw was irrelevant.

I got the box out with a bit more tugging on it.

Hooray! I found a replacement and would appreciate you guys taking a look at it.

I'd like to hope I have the correct one that will work.

http://www.circotech.com/hp-d2537f3r-250w-hp-replacement-power-supply-part-number-5187-1098.html

Thanks.
