Solve : Repair Windows 7 installation?? |
Answer» This is my girlfriends Dell inspiron laptop which had so much malware / malicious programs etc. installed that it would barely function. ComboFix is a powerful tool and should not be used unless instructed to do so by an expert in malware removal. It could turn your computer into a expensive door stopper. Couldn't agree more...I wouldn't have SUGGESTED it if I was not prepared to support it. Quote from: patio on January 17, 2016, 04:19:28 PM The hidden partition would wipe everything and tale it back to Day 1 status...you sure this is what you want ? ?I did a repair install but I am still getting the same error message. I do not have any 'system restore' options. What now? Quote from: patio on January 17, 2016, 04:19:28 PM The hidden partition would wipe everything and tale it back to Day 1 status...you sure this is what you want ? ? I'd rather fix this if it's relatively simple but I have all the files backed up and I have the license codes for my paid version software so I can do an install from the partition if needed. I may need DIRECTIONS for doing that? At this point you may need the help of a local friend who has does this befosre. You can Google this: repair or restore Windows 7 And get this: https://www.google.com/search?q=repair+or+restsores+Winedows+7&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=repair+or+restore+Windows+7 Which will give a list of articles that have been published. If I were your local friend, I would try to 'clone' your hard drive to a spare hard drive and then try different things on the new copy. If best efforts fail, you still have the original disk drive to work with. The spare hard drive should be the same type and the same size. Or a little bigger. You will find the cost of a spare drive should be less that the cost of paying somebody to fix the computer. That Is the best I can offer. Quote from: lectrocrew on January 18, 2016, 02:53:24 PM I'd rather fix this if it's relatively simple but I have all the files backed up and I have the license codes for my paid version software so I can do an install from the partition if needed. I may need directions for doing that? No...it cannot be facilitated from the Recovery partition...as you read in the link provided you need a MS Win7 DVD that matches the ver. you currently have installed... Start askin around for 1... |

Solve : Need for Speed 5 Porsche 2000 Unleashed: no resolutions available and Dx7 error? |
Answer» When I bought my AMD R7 240 4GB, I firstly installed Windows 7. The first game that I installed was NFS 5 Porsche. I launched it and when I went to MAXIMIZE the settings, I saw that there were no resolutions available in the "Screen Size" list. I went furhter, maximized everything and when I launched a race, before the Loading screen to appear, it gave me an DX7 error. The same applies to Vista. XP is a bit different here, it has the 640x480 resolution, but it's the only one available. I was able to play this game on: GeForce MX4000, Intel Chipset 945 Graphics, Intel HD Graphics from Pentium B950 (but it wasn't able to display correctly the Speedometers in the car and the Number Board on the back of the car and the front), Intel HD Graphics from Intel Pentium G i-don't-remember-the-number 2.9 GHz (but having the same problem as the B950 one) and GeForce GT630 (but having the same problem as the Pentiums + repedeatly PRESSING the horn when horning and repedeatly animating the "changing gears" when... changing gears). This is the first graphics card that can't play the game, only on XP.Need for Speed Porsche UNLEASHED is designed for Windows 98. It also has some limited compatibility with newer hardware. In particular, like some of the other EA Racing games from around that time, It is necessary to run "3dSetup" in order for it to effectively save some information into the registry, such that you can select your hardware device. Otherwise, it defaults to the Software Renderer. Graphics hardware could not be initialized Did you install the R9's Graphics Card's Drivers, as well as DirectX 9.0c? Intel/AMD/NVidia/etc. doesn't really matter. It also works fine on my AMD 5350 with INTEGRATED R3 system running Windows 10, once all the proper software is installed and compatibility settings assigned.R7 Of course I installed the drivers. I have DirectX 11 installed.Oh, and I have problems with NFSHP2 too. When I launch a race, I hear a high noise from my speakers and the Loading progress never moves.Quote from: antoniu200 on January 19, 2016, 05:29:48 AM R7 If you didn't install DirectX 9.0c, you should do so. DirectX 10/11/etc. are not cumulative, so the games are likely using an install of DX7. But there are games and programs that need DirectX 11. If I install DirectX 9.0c will it downgrade to that version or just add more files?Quote from: antoniu200 on January 19, 2016, 09:19:21 AM But there are games and programs that need DirectX 11. If I install DirectX 9.0c will it downgrade to that version or just add more files? No, they are separate. Can you give me a link? I don't seem to find it anywhere.https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=34429Well, when I put the Essentials pack on Vista it can launch the game, but the same Dx7 error. With the Dx9.0c Pack installed, I still get the Dx7 error.Oh, and I tried the 3D setup, but it made no difference. i I think we should try this on XP SP3. I'll tell you the results.Only 640x480x16 is available with all the fixes that you gave me and I found-0. |

Solve : Windows 7 upgrade from Vista discs? |
Answer» I've just seen in a local charity shop cd rack what appears to be a genuine Windows 7 upgrade for XP/Vista pack - 2 cds (32 + 64 bit) - brand new looking, with the product key and other info stickers on the pack box, which has been opened (seal broken). I'm wondering if this is legal to buy and install - would it need MS registration or ok? I know there are lots of counterfeits around. Comments and advice appreciated. Its a gamble if it will work. It might be flagged as a bad key with microsofts database, especially if the key is out in the open for someone to snapshot the key with their camera and not even buy the upgrade at the store and multiple people try to illegally use the key. Interesting subject, though - the legality of buying something whose original owners are unknown. With a Operating systems Key that is like a VIN I suppose if it was ever actually registered vs just activated Microsoft would know. An inquiry to a key with Microsoft would likely black list that key though. Thank Goodness for no annual town/state registration fees and no bill of sale needed to legally own and use a computer like a car. If computers were taxed like automobiles in my state of New Hampshire for annual registration fees I'd probably be still sporting a Pentium 3. New Hampshire btw has a luxury tax system on autos where you pay heavily on registration fees the first 3 to 5 years of the AUTO's life, and then its DEPRECIATIVE in the cost for older automobiles until you get to a rock bottom fee based on weight and axles etc. I held out as long as I could with having to buy a new car. Drove a 1997 Mazda 626 and 1998 Honda Civic EX VTEC. Bought them when they were about 9 years old ( both of them southern cars that never seen much salt with Mazda from North Carolina and Honda a once stolen car from Florida. The Mazda 626 died due to rust rot of New England salt bath 5 months of every year at 15 years old and 6 of the years exposed to heavy salt, and the Honda Civic is 18 years old and might not make its way to the road again due to rot after its been exposed for 9 years to heavy salt bathing. When the brake lines and fuel lines rotted out after 17 years I was forced to get into a lease on a 2016 Hyundai Elantra and while I like the Elantra a lot. The state really liked getting me for almost $500. The 1997 Mazda was $103 a year and 1998 Honda Civic was like $114 a year. This year when the registration runs out it will be another $400-$500 registration. The Honda I just need to patch it up of holes, replace fuel line, and then try to SELL it for $1000 to some kid that wants a VTEC Civic 2 door with plenty of power still at the wheels who will likely put low profile wheels on it a huge muffler tip and sound system that exceeds the vehicles worth by about $2000. Already replaced the brake lines in it and then winter struck in which its too cold to work on cars out doors. But in a state with no income tax, I guess they have to get money from some other means. State motto is "Live Free or Die" ... the state is not that bad compared to others, but they get you with luxury taxation on your property. Ending it here since its gone off subject slightly... |

Solve : Multiple BSOD, failure to boot after each? |
Answer» Hello all, There are many good approaches for testing memory. However, many tests simply throw some patterns at memory without much thought or knowledge of memory architecture or how errors can best be detected. This works fine for hard memory failures but does little to find intermittent errors. BIOS based memory tests are useless for finding intermittent memory errors. Run the test for a long time. This helps verify the RAM is or is not the problem. Unfortunately I have no integrated graphics, so the graphics card will have to be included. I don't own an internal optical drive or a printer, so those aren't an issue. I attempted another memtest, the last attempt was with the old power supply, and it again stopped DISPLAYING again before the first pass was completed. However, I swapped RAM with a buddy of mine and it has been working fine in his computer. I borrowed his single stick of RAM and it is unreliable in all 4 of my slots. I did NOTICE a day or two ago that my RAM (2x 4Gb sticks) was not being read properly by my computer. It was showing that I had only 4Gb installed when both sticks were in. Because of that I suspect that if RAM is the issue, it's not in the sticks themselves but in the ports on the Motherboard. The single stick that I am still borrowing is plugged into a slot that was previously not in use. I was able to set the BIOS to default settings, and since the HDD was disconnected I booted into a Live USB of Ubuntu to see if a crash would happen there as well, which it did after some minutes. The computer continues to boot unreliably. I'm still assuming that the issue is in the Motherboard, but I am going to look into picking up a new CMOS battery from Walmart or whatever tomorrow if I don't have a spare somewhere in the house. Is there anything else I should attempt before ordering a new motherboard? Yes, borrow an old reliable graphics card and see if that makes a difference. Let Windows UNINSTALL a simple default driver. The problem just might be the graphics drive and/or the graphics card you have been using. |

Solve : Computer wont find updates? |
Answer» Greetings, Of course they know all this too but can't admit it since it makes their latest OSes look poor. Moving from a very simple and fast update mechanism that worked to a complex one that requires endless “configuring” and repair is a product engineering defect. Here is my personal suggestion. Sometime during the week leave your PC on overnight. Disable the hibernate nor sleep options. PERHAPS in the wee hours of the morning the traffic will go down and the update will finish before your morning coffee. Thanks for the help, both of you. This machine is sure making me work for it. But i know considering the hardware it has( 2 Quad Core Xeons X5450's) it worth it. The updates flew in despite my slow 5MBPS internet connection and the windows 10 icon has appeared. Now i have to MAYBE go back to the hardware section, as the Video card (AMD 4580) isnt happy. It booted with striped on both my screens, but after a BSOD and a reboot its doing fine. I stressed it even playing GTA V on it. Hopefully its SMOOTH sailing from here on out. |

Solve : HACKED ???? |
Answer» Hi there! I believe that I have been hacked in some way. Nothing major I hope, but my register is affected in some way although it is not giving any trouble?? Well fella's it sure was great you giving me all this help! I am absolutely knocked out buy your response here! lol Now I know that you guys 'aint a bad bunch a'fellas really ... so what's up then? A "corrupted registry" would prevent your system from booting. Registry Cleaners are a waste of time and cause more problems than they solve. You're basically walking into the DOCTORS office and saying "I've been throwing up a lot, I think I have anthrax!, can you recommend some chemo?" and wondering why nobody is recommending chemo. (The analogy breaks down I suppose in that chemotherapy actually has a long-term positive effect in many cases) OK guys I get the picture! When I say my Registry is corrupted, I mean that my normal access to is now denied. I can enter it, but I can no longer edit it??? Now I know what you all are going to say and I DON''T mess with my registry at all! I know what I am doing when I do edit, but by and large, I leave my Reg well alone!. However keys that I know I can change ( or could), I now can't! This worries me, HENCE my post. I am Win7 64 and have had the recent problem of losing my Steam account to some *censored* who is going around taking them from folk, so I am scouting for other problems as well. http://www.eset.co.uk/Antivirus-Utilities/Online-Scanner Try this scanner guys it is a good one! |

Solve : Which USB Driver is using in my computer?? |
Answer» Hi, I'm really havin trouble deciding what it is you are trying to do... Yes, I can move files right now between the phone and PC.Quote from: camerongray on May 31, 2016, 03:15:46 PM Have you enabled USB debugging on the Android device? The phone should say something along the lines of "USB Debugging Enabled" when it's connected to the computer. Yes, In my mobile, I set tick after "Developer options/Android debugging" and set tick after "Developer options/USB debugging notify" Thankd a lot!I have always used my own USB driver in my Vista WITHOUT any problem. But cannot link between Android Studio and my mobile. People said, to link Android Studio and mobile, we need Googles' USB driver. I downloaded it and after downloading, I have CHECKED Android -> SDK Manager -> "Default Settings" -> SDK Tools and found "Google USB Driver 11 Installed"! Why the Android Studio still say "No USB devices ...... detected" |

Solve : Netbook hangs and freezes? |
Answer» I have an Acer Aspire One that I purchased 11/09. 2gb memory, 250gb HD. Intel Atom Z520 processor, Vista Home Basic I will be leaving in 2 weeks to go abroad to take a class and will need a small computer. Is this something that can be fixed? Or should I be shopping for a newer netbook? ThanksShort answer is No, you will not fix it in time. You can buy a good computer from many outlets. Here in the USA you can get a good price on a computer at a Walmart store,. But if they do not have what you need in stock, then can pull it from another store with no shipping change. IMO, a refurbished laptop is your best option. You just want it to work and don't care about fashion. http://www.walmart.com/browse/electronics/refurbished-laptops/3944_3951_1089430_1230091_1230092 No, this is not a endorsement. Other discount vendors \have some of the same STUFF at about the same price. What matters in the kind of warranty they support. Quote Also, quite often once it is left alone, when I come back, it will not wake back up.... requiring a hard reboot. Back around that time period some systems were having issues with power management with hibernation. You can try setting it to never go to sleep. But the issue here is that the netbook is weak. I have a netbook myself with a 1.66Ghz Atom N280 ( 1 single physical core with 1 hyperthread acting like 2 cores ) and its quite slow. Its processing benchmark is the equivalent of a Pentium 4 2.53Ghz with Integrated graphics. Additionally back in the day i use to play youtube on it in 360p and it would be somewhat ok, but these days it chokes on video streaming etc. I bought my netbook around the same time November 2009 on a black friday deal. Modern computing is a bit much for it 7 years later for an already weak CPU then 7 years ago, its that much weaker today to handle todays processing needs as everything becomes more complex and CPU processor hungry. One thing you can try to get this laptop fixed if its more problems then it just freezing after walking away from it is, create restore media or use restore media on it and set it back to clean build just as the day you bought it and first turned it on, then perform all updates and maybe that will help. But when it comes to the Intel Atom processors, they are quite weak. You might want to buy a new computer or a refurb that is more powerful. What type of stuff do you need to run on the computer? ( Such as if you into graphic design or programming or CAD or anything requiring lots of computer use, you definitely will want to get a faster computer to make for better productivity of your time vs having to crawl on a slow computer.Thank you for the replies. I don't run anything super out of the ordinary on this machine.... yesterday I tried to check my yahoo mail and it just kept spinning and spinning... finally had to pull out a different devise. I just need to be able to check my online emails, use google docs/sheets, view the occasional youtube video etc. If I could run Microsoft products like Word as well, that would be a plus. When I first got the machine, it ran fine. I am not running anything different on it. What is restore media? Does that clean out all the "gunk" that might be somewhere hidden? Or is it more like a factory reset button?Vista has always been known as a resource hog. If I had that machine, I would get a copy of either Win 7, Win 8 or Win 10 and install it. I have owned a number of Acer Aspire One netbooks that originally came with XP installed. I have run Win 7, Win 8.x and Win 10 on all of them and they worked great. The Intel Atom processor is roughly equivalent to a Pentium 4 cpu in performance. Not particularly bad but much slower than any of the Intel Core i processors (i3, i5, i7). The Atom's main design goal was (and still is) power efficiency because it was designed for mobile devices (like netbooks). If you decide to look for a newer netbook because you want something small to carry around, I would recommend that you look into a Windows tablet. A Windows tablet is great as it can run all the same software as a netbook or laptop which an iPad or an Android tablet can't do. Most Windows tablets run a newer version of the Atom processor and do quite well running Windows 10. Many Windows tablets come with the Home/Student version of MS Office. Check out the Dell Venue 8 Pro 3000 for a decent Windows tablet for less than $200. Another option to consider would be a Chromebook. CHROMEBOOKS can't run MS Word like a Windows tablet can but they INTEGRATE really well with Google Docs.Thanks. I have a chromebook from work, and yes, it runs very smoothly. However, I will be traveling this summer and do not what to take something with me that is not really mine. Also, where I will be this summer, I will not always have internet available. So I am THINKING that if I got a new netbook (small, with a real keyboard and actual harddrive) then I can keep working. Any suggestions on a diagnostic tool I can use on my current one so I can know what the PROBLEM was before I use it for target practice?Ok, so I have been playing with this thing a bit and here are my updates: 1. apparently I must have upgraded at some point because it is running Win 7 Home Premium 2. I ran the memory diagnostic tool - all good 3. I ran the system file checker scan - all good 4. I tried to do the F8 Repair you computer option --- but couldn't remember the admin password 5. I am now trying to run the Windows Experience Index but when I try to get a recent rating it crashes to a black screen (2x) Give up the ghost...and prepare for your trip. |

I have a similar laptop with Core 2 Duo CPU that I had display driver issues with Mint 17.2 and Mint 17.2 is very much like Ubuntu ... I got mine working on Linux Mint 9 LTS . Although your data might be all gone now that you tampered with it from looks of it.Just curious - why are you posting in haiku?was thinking maybe a mobile device with line character limit that carried over with lots of returns.. |

Solve : No Operating System Found? |
Answer» Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 23, 2016, 02:54:59 PM IMHO, you shouldn't ha veto pay for anything.Agreed 100%. Quote A technician at Microsoft had to wipe the hard drive clean from the dreaded BLUE screen of death so there is currently no o/s on my COMPUTER.This idiot is the one responsible. The number of things wrong with almost everything that is being described as what they did is MIND boggling, but at the same time, I can actually believe that a Microsoft tech at one of their stores actually thinks literally wiping the computer and making it unbootable is a good solution to a blue screen issue. I'd be raising a fuss with the store. Aside from having idiot employees, it sounds like they refuse responsibility as well, then make up complete gibberish, (like how the CD would somehow change from being unbootable to being bootable because you have a product key...). This is irresponsible behaviour from people that are supposed to KNOW what they are doing that users who are not familiar with the inner workings of the system depend on for advice and support.I can't believe the incompetence of people at both Lenovo and Microsoft.. This should have been a simple fix however it wasn't due to all the inconsistent information that I have been given along the way... Turns out after another call to Lenovo today that they sent me the wrong RECOVERY discs. Had enough of this nonsense. I have requested a refund for them and will be looking on ebay for an authentic copy of windows 7.Good Luck with that...there's very few legit ones out there...Getting a bogus copy of Windows 7 is very risky. The pirate may have done a lot of dirty things to it. A better method is to get a real copy of Windows 7 in a legal way without paying anything for it. At the poin, this problem is just about getting a good product key without theft, deception or fraud. Example: A school has some old computers they want to scrap because of hardware problems. They may let you have the COA stickers if you will pay for the disposal at a proper recycle center. You might salvage some memory chips and CPUs and other items to help defray your cost of disposal. In that case, the COA is free. Of course that tastes work. Anything takes work. |

When I LOG on, however, the windows vista icon ( the one that circles around as the profile begins to load) looks odd - not smooth. My icons in the task bar look the same way. When I open programs, EVEN the tabs on the internet look the same way, odd, big, and not smooth. Things just look like the "safe mode" appearance. But the screen resolution has not changed. Nothing I did in the advanced properties helped either. What on earth could it be? The computer still works, but the visual is terrible. Solve : Temporary Profile when logging on? |
Answer» System I have been running without a rebuild since January 2013 today surprised me with upon selecting my profile and logging on it started with a Temporary Profile.... Windows detected your registry file is STILL in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards. XML View shows this info with EVENT_HIVE_LEAK catching my eye. Quote - <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> Online I didnt find anything helpful as to why this happened as for my system still has its profile there and no corruption detected. Nervous that it could have been a hard drive FAILURE I ran crystaldiskinfo and both hard drives show healthy. This morning when shutting the system down it shutdown normal. Additionally the desktop system is protected by being powered off of a battery backup so no dips or low voltage conditions from power to home would affect a write to hard drive etc. Figured I'd share this here to see if anyone has SEEN this before to know the exact cause. First time its happened and hopefully it wont happen again, but I am going to backup my important data off of the 750GB HDD as for thats the one that the profile is located on and the one that gets battered by heavy write cycles from FRAPS regularly for 30 minutes to 2 hours at a time when recording VIDEO game events. Attached is a screenshot from event viewer which pretty much shows same info that I pasted above. Here is Microsofts hit on this that isnt much help: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/being-logged-in-to-windows-7-with-a-temporary/95a4689d-e5b8-43b7-8fee-e87a01ae7acb?auth=1 [attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]The "hive leak" from what I understand is when a program has a registry handle open to your user hive when you log off or switch users. probably not related to how it logged into a temporary profile. There should be a log entry something like "Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile." Since you can log-in to the profile without ISSUE now it would appear to be related to a background program such as an AV (which runs under the local system account) happening to be looking at a registry key or file that Windows needed to use to log-in. It couldn't access it so freaked out and just used a temporary profile. Thanks for the info BC |

Solve : Predicting future purchases of intermittent customers? |
Answer» I have over 2700 customers that I need to analyze. It shows for each customer when in the last 5 years they made a purchase, based on months. It looks something like 0, 0, 100, 0, 0, 0, 0, 200, 0, 0, 0, 500 for a single YEAR for a single customer. I have a formula that get produce the sizes of the GAPS between each purchase. From the gap sizes I was able to find the mean gap size and the standard deviation of gap sizes. I then compared the time since the last purchase to find the standard deviations away from the mean gap size it is. This turned out to be a problem for a LOT of my customers since this will not work if there is less than 3 purchases and if every gap between purchases is the same. I've tried QUITE a few methods to predict this data and cannot find any way to do so. If anyone can find a better way to do so please let me know |

Solve : Windows 7 Installation Stalls? |

Answer» I have a T3400 and just put in a WD 250 SATA drive, the frist part of the install works fine but, then when it reboots for you to like name the machine and start WINDOWS the first time; it freezes or rather gets a black screen and see the mouse icon. When installing Windows you should not have any peripherals plugged into the USB other than the mouse and keyboard. And maybe a DVD drive., if needed. Windows 7 Starter, Home BASIC, and Home Premium will recognize only one physical processor. He needs to answer what the Dell disc was for...it's likely why it does NOT work...bob1286, here is an important detail you need to clarify. The computer, a T3400 , was working fine with an older version of Windows? Which Windows? ** The Windows 7 OS you are wanting to install is a retail version you bought for hat computer? If you answer 'NO' to either of the above, it becomes a guessing game as to what WENT wrong. You say that the Windows 7 home version works? OK, just stick with that. For any older PC there is little resewn to use a more expensive version of Windows 7. Why do you want to use that old PC? ** That Dell PC sells for : US $199.20 on eBay and has a warranty and a real legit version of Windows 7. At an earlier timed Windows 7 pro was near to tan that price level. A few retailers still ask $199 for Windows 7 pro in a retail package. |

Solve : Windows COA? |
Answer» Ok so i have 5 desktops i bought for cheap ($30) a piece. None of which have an OS installed but all have Win 7 COA. What would be the cheapest most efficient way to get them all working. Should i create a windows 7 install disk and get one computer working then clone the HDD with the rest? Will the licence still be ACTIVE if i clone them? Or should i start from scratch with every desktop. If they are identical you can clone them - Install Windows without a KEY (will give you a 30 day trial), clone this then enter the correct key on each machine then activate Windows. If they are different you will need to do a clean install on each.Ok thank you! How identical? Identical HARD drives or identical as in all PC specs. And also, do you recommend i create my own windows 7 startup disk? and if your aloud where do you recommend i do this. I am tempted to buy one so i dont have to worry about doing it wrong or getting a bad disc. I renamed your Topic and moved it to a more APPROPRIATE forum. Please don't use "HELP" as a topic / subject. This is a support forum - everyone is asking for help. Thank you. |

Solve : What is using 100% CPU not shown in Task Manager?? |
Answer» Punctuation is a lost art.Quote Rebooting your computer is the best thing you can do for a computer. I agree.. however there are also people out there that suggest that power & thermal hot/cold cycling is worse than leaving live. Personally if there is no need for the system to be on it should be off, as for why waste ELECTRIC, have it accumulate borked bits until a crash or leak type situation, as well as the mechanical wear on fans and hard drives, and shortening of electrolytic caps through thermal drying of electrolyte. I kind of have always treated my computers like cars with mileage sort of.... I will have a new computer and an old computer and if I dont want to put the mileage on my new computer and the old computer has no problem with the posted speed for the software, I will run that high mileage computer instead of the new one. However if you have a work load that requires more processing power ( sort of like more horse power for cars ), then use the newer system instead. By putting more mileage on the beaters, the better computers lasted longer before failure by limiting use to them to only when that much processing power is needed. However operating this way.... you also have to look at, at what point does it make SENSE to call it quits with an electron guzzling beater. Such as a Pentium 4 2.0Ghz made in 2002, its still going, but its actually not power efficient. So for example the Pentium 4 will run on say 120 watts, and a modern low cost low processing power build such as with AMD Kabini Sempron 3850 AM1 APU 1.3Ghz quadcore with a 25 watt TDP CPU, is more powerful and runs around 35 to 40 watts. So at some point the beater needs to get replaced with a more efficient beater system. My beater system is this low power Kabini Sempron Quadcore http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113366 So I mostly run between this Kabini 1.3Ghz Quadcore, Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz Quadcore ( with cool n quiet for 780Mhz idle ), and AMD FX-8350 x8 4.0Ghz 8-Core ( with coon n quiet for 1400Mhz idle ). And run them matched to the software or games I will be running to save electricity and balance out the mileage on them. * The middle system the Athlon II x4 620 gets the majority of the workload though because it fits more use scenarios such as I can be crunching game play video data with virtual dub to size down a recorded game event from 25GB to 800MB and playing a game at same time with minimal impact, yet the Kabini would choke on this multitask with the same game at the same time(yet the system can run the game flawless if the game is without background crunching ), and the 8core would run mostly idle with only 25% cpu usage etc because its overkill. For mobile computing I have a Toshiba Netbook with Atom 1.66Ghz and a ASUS Laptop with 1000M Celeron 1.8Ghz. Most of my gaming is on desktops. Although the Celeron 1000M with Intel HD GPU is not that bad for games I play on it. Solve : Windows Media Player & Avast issues (please help)? |
Answer» After MEETING with Geek Squad at my local Best Buy store... I am 99.9% sure it's hardware related. The symptoms do not point to a hardware issue. They are too specific to particular pieces of software for that to be the case, I think. Quote Plus, it's a 6 year old laptop that they don't make parts for anymore. Therefore making it unrepairable. If it was a hardware issue, It would be an issue on one of the system boards, and would likely be any of a number of components that can be easily found at a hardware store (Capacitor, transistor, etc.) "Geek Squad" doesn't do component-level board repair, though, and typically do not have the expertise needed to even determine that the issue is with a component in this fashion. A new laptop would likely have Win10 which won't have Windows Media Player, if that matters. Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 15, 2016, 05:11:15 PM The symptoms do not point to a hardware issue. They are too specific to particular pieces of software for that to be the case, I think. Well restoring it to factory settings didn't FIX the issue. That means it's hardware related. Tell me what the problem is then. Because I've TRIED EVERYTHING when I feel like I'm dealing with an unrepairable laptop. What does Windows 10 have then if not Windows Media Player? How are you supposed to play music on Windows 10?Sadly, WMP hasn’t been updated since Windows 7, which doesn’t mean it doesn’t work, but it’s not exactly the latest nor greatest app for playing your MP3s. In Windows 10, there’s a new music app called Groove Music. Google "Groove Music" without quotes. To find WMP in win 10, click Start and type: media player and select it from the results at the top. Alternately, you can right-click the Start button to bring up the hidden quick access menu and choose Run or use the keyboard shortcut Windows Key+R. Then type: wmplayer.exe and hit Enter. Note: Microsoft removed DVD playback support back in Windows 8, so you won’t be able to use WMP for them. However, there are plenty of third-party utilities (hint: VLC) Posting this from new laptop. I SEE. Well I'm getting a definitive answer from ASUS I will be sending it to them and we'll see what they say. |

Solve : New SSD, New system recovery CD's = Windows Update problems? |
Answer» I just replaced the hard drive in my HP2000-299wm laptop with a crucial SSD, ordered a recovery CD set from HP, and everything is running fine except Windows update searches for updates endlessly, for hours, WITHOUT ever listing any updates to install. The Installed Updates list is empty. I have let it run for 12 hours uninterrupted with no results. I've tried Microsoft Fix It tool, troubleshooter. Solve : PC frezzes every-night? |
Answer» Sorry about not being clearer. Its a tool you need to download, and run from this site. Be sure to run only the standard edition portable version to avoid any tag along unwanted installers. Looks like the C: Drive is ILL . I'd replace it with a healthy drive. It looks like its used up all of its free sectors, sectors that drives have to correct for damage, and so further damage will shrink the drive capacity or eventually the drive will completely fail and all data could be lost or further corrupted. Yes it has been turned off and on a lot I would turn it on in the afternoon and then off and back on at night. so it's a new drive I need, so beit. I have another drive in the pc should I move everything to it.Quote from: SuperDave on June 16, 2016, 03:54:57 PM Harry, I think he means this: http://crystalmark.info/software/CrystalDiskInfo/index-e.html Thank you Dave.I thought F: might have been an EXTERNAL drive. But yes you could repurpose internal drive F: as C:, but I would backup your data to an external drive before moving forward with repurposing the F: drive to be C: Then install WINDOWS clean and then copy data from external back to the new C: drive if needed etc. Then this should put an end to your troubles with the freeze ups. The damaged drive that is ill should be removed from the system in the end so that Windows no longer associates with it or if you dont want to remove it just remove the power and sata com cable from it so that its not connected to the system anymore. I have seen people leave ill drives into system and swap drives and then the system acts up because the ill drive is being used for paging etc. You dont want the drive to be in use any longer after getting your data off of it, and only the other drive to be used which should be healthy according to crystaldiskinfo. The ill drive has a bad sector count of 1BE which Hex to Decimal conversion shows as 446 bad sectors which is quite a few. I have one hard drive with just 2 bad sectors that I continue to use, but not use with important data. Previous owner likely bumped it when it was running. I got it free and use it still because 2 bad sectors isnt that bad. But this drive likely has a scuff mark on a platter from getting bumped when running which is the most common cause for damaged sectors.Would this happen to have anything to do with the fact that I do not wait for the PC to shut down properly, I shut down on screen and then turn the plug off when the PC is still running.Actually, that is REALLY bad.Quote from: Luigi master on June 17, 2016, 02:18:37 PM Actually, that is REALLY bad. I know and I should not be doing it but I didn't think I was doing lasting harm.Yes that is bad. When shutting down computer, just walk away and let it do its thing and shut down gracefully so that the hard drive is not trying to write to the drive and then you pull power and corrupt data or worse cause the hard drive to scratch a platter when it doesnt park itself before shutdown where the heads move away from the data sectors of the platter before spinning down.Quote from: DaveLembke on June 18, 2016, 05:22:25 AM Yes that is bad. When shutting down computer, just walk away and let it do its thing and shut down gracefully so that the hard drive is not trying to write to the drive and then you pull power and corrupt data or worse cause the hard drive to scratch a platter when it doesnt park itself before shutdown where the heads move away from the data sectors of the platter before spinning down.In fact, pc GO in sleep mode and the problem happens when waking up? possible cause could be the bios is configured for a deep sleep mode (s3) and the wakeup event is not handled via usb mouse/keyboard. is there hard drive activity during the "freeze"? if so, you're not frozen, it's just busy. how long do you wait till REBOOTING? If you've noticed that win 7 laptop can sometimes take 20 sec or more to fully wakeup when configured for hybrid sleep (automatically hybernating after extended sleep). the desktop will be visible but nothing responds... i assume the delay is from fully restoring memory state from hiberfile.sys. |

Solve : HELP. My Toshiba Laptop Auto Fills and Has a Long Beep On Enter Password Startup? |
Answer» HI everyone, I was hoping you geniuses can help me get my Toshiba Satellite C655-S5514, that's running Windows 7 Home Premium, up and running again. I looked over the other forum topics but couldn't find what I was looking for, so I thought it would be better to ask directly. Here's my issue, This laptop has sat in my closet for about a year. I haven't been using it since I also have a desk top. Anyway, I pulled the laptop out today and plugged in the power cord, opened the screen and then hit the power button. When I did, the screen showed the Toshiba logo screen and then immediately WENT to the black screen with the blue box that says Enter Password, BUT all of a sudden, the password box automatically filled up and then the laptop started a long, continuous beep. Not a beep, beep, beep, etc., but just one long beep. When I press the keyboard buttons, like the backspace or anything else, it doesn't do anything. Now, if I turn it off and then back on, it keeps doing the same thing EXCEPT, if I hold down any key and then turn on the laptop, the same screens will come up but the password window won't auto full and it doesn't beep. Once I let go of the keyboard key I'm holding down, the password window will only auto FILL 2 digits instead of filling up all the way and there's no beep at all on the times I try this. If anyone can help me, I would forever be in your debt. Thanks so much for reading my long post. Take care guys and gals. Shawnymike Sounds like you have a keyboard problem. Could be damaged or full of dust or DEBRIS, or have one or more stuck keys. It may need replacing. Consider a visit to a repair shop. It sounds like you may have a stuck key. You may be able to visually inspect the keyboard and find the key that's stuck. Often a sharp rap with your finger on the key is enough to free it. If you are somewhat handy, a laptop keyboard is fairly easy to replace, usually only 2 screws and a small ribbon cable. There's tutorials available to show you how to replace the keyboard. You should be able to buy a keyboard on Ebay for around $20 or so (slightly more if your keyboard is backlit). I'd also replace the CMOS battery.... |
