I online recovery . & 2nd recovery using recovery disk..

Now option 1 online recovery is not working ..

Now is there any chances to loss data in D and E drive if get recovery disk EITHER from friend or at sony service center..
.

Pls help In any event, you should absolutely backup all data you want to preserve on EXTERNAL media (DVD or CD, flash drive, external hard drive, or cloud storage).

Regarding recovery, do you have a recovery partition on your computer? If not, then you should obtain a recovery disk from Sony, not your friend.

Solve : Run-time error '5'?

Answer»

Vista service pack 2
I am trying to install some family history software to read the 1881 Census on CDs. The people who published this no longer support this system so I can't get help there.
I have installed the Viewer but on trying to add Resource File (CD of Census) I get a box come up saying, "Run-time error '5' Invalid procedure or argument".

This has HAPPENED after reinstalling Vista after trying Ubuntu which I did not like. I have tried reinstalling Vista a couple of times with the same result and clicking on "Repair" during instillation.

Any suggestions how to fix this please? What OS version did this software run last correctly on? Id go with a virtual system and run the software in its intended OS as a possible solution.

Like some old software I have wont run on newer Windows 7 64-bit, but in a virtual environment it runs without issues. Games are hit and miss with this as for some virtual environments are not compatible with early games etc, but the software your running should just show statistical data and so its not graphically intense and so it should run.

As far as running it through ubuntu I am guessing you ran it through WINE?Thanks for your reply.
It last ran on this Vista laptop.
I have a Windows 7 computer that is 64 bit but the 1881 Census CDs need 32 bit. How could I run this on Windows 7 please? If you have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate, you can download and install Microsoft's free Windows XP Mode and Windows Virtual PC. This runs a COPY of XP in a 32-bit virtual machine. Unfortunately, if you're running a 64-bit version of Vista, Windows 8, or Windows 7 Home, that option is closed for you.

Its odd that the program is 32-bit and giving your troubles with 64-bit as for I run tons of 32-bit apps and programs in Windows 7 64-bit myself. If the program is 16 bit then there is a definite problem with 64-bit OS and it. A 32-bit OS supports both 16 and 32-bit, but 64-bit OS would have to USE virtualization to support 16 bit.Try running the program as Admin.Be nice to know what app this is...Thanks for the answers.
I have run as Administrator.
System on Windows 7 is Windows & Home Premium.
Not sure what you mean by what A[[ Patio? (Probably dimness of my old age. ) This is a collection of CDs that has the British 1881 Census on it. They used to be in every library around here. As I have difficulty getting out I purchased my own set. But now can't access them.
As: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1881-British-Census-National-Index-Family-Search-LDS-25-CD-set-Genealogy-/291844705782?hash=item43f34ccdf6:g:e8sAAOSwWnFWCFI5

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1881-British-Census-National-Index-Family-History-Resource-24-CD-Rom-Set-/371694640933?hash=item568aba1f25:g:u1sAAOSwRgJXmJq8

Reading through the adverts one mentions 16 Bit? But I plead ignorance there. It certainly used to run on Vista. If running as administrator doesn't work, there is likely no way to fix it. The Error message is coming from Visual Basic and is sufficiently generic of an error message to make it rather difficult to determine solutions. Best guess based on my former work with Visual Basic would be that it is trying to utilize a Library package that is no longer available on Windows 7.

As far as the software goes, it looks to have changed hands several times. It was originally "Folio Views" by Folio Software in 1990 when the 1881 Census project was started by the LDS. By 1999 it was effectively owned by "Open Market"; in 2001 NextPage purchased the product rights and they started to LICENSE (rather than sell) the software; they discontinued all Folio Products by 2007. A Norwegian company, "Fast Search & Transfer" Then purchased Folio Views, among other products from NextPage, they then released "ProPublish 4.1" in 2009, the "Fast Search and Transfer" company was purchased by Microsoft, who then turned around and sold it to Rocket Software.

Rocket Software is the current OWNER of the software and more importantly, they have released versions of Folio Software which support Windows 7.

Their product page for Folio Software 4.9 can be found here. It is likely if you can get a hold of the newer product version it could be used for the data on the CDs.

Thanks. Looks like I look out for a cheap used Vista machine.I found an answer! Started in Safe Mode and was able to load the 1881 Census. Restarted in normal mode and now I can view the census. Much happiness though realise I should have tried this earlier. I have learnt a little more.

Solve : Making the (whatever Windows uses for UID) the same on 2 virtual PCs?

Answer»

Hi,

I'm trying to share my D: drive (not simultaneously of course) between an XP VM and a Win7 VM. Even though the username is the same on both VMs, when I try to access the files Win7 says I have no PERMISSION to my files I created on XP.

How does Windows manage identities and file ownership (like Unix UIDs)? And how do I make Win7 give my user the same attributes as the same user on XP.

PS: I don't have an AD domain controller, so I can't use that to make the users the same.

PPS: Just had a thought.. I could get concurrent access and user control with Samba, but not sure how to do seamless user authentication without AD. Perhaps I could use a junction to LINK to the Samba drive. A Network share should work for both, assuming PRIVILEGES have been set correctly and firewall configured to allow. What i have done for my virtual machines is map a network share to a drive letter. Then reference that drive letter that is the share between all. Permissions can be set to EVERYONE if you working behind a firewall and no one else on your network to mess with your data. I use this configuration with it set to EVERYONE having Read/Write access on my private network which WORKS better than trying to match up users that are the same between varying OS versions. Setting to Everyone usually is the fix, but only a fix if used on a network that is safe to set to Everyone.Alternately you should be able to right clik the drive in the Admin account and select "take ownership"...Actually - I think the easiest solution is now that I already have a D: drive on the WinXP VM, just share it with CIFS to the Win7 VM.

The only remaining 2 issues are (1) that the Win7 VM is 95% busy CPU when it should be idle, and (2) working out how tp tell Win7 to use the network share as the user's home area. Junctions don't seem to cut the mustard for Win7 in the way they do on XP.

Solve : Unable to login now. Need to get in to fix problem?

Answer»

Things were starting to act up the other day. It would freeze, and I would get the unresponsive plugin box, so I had to keep stopping that. That's what I was originally going to post about. But then a you tube video wouldn't run, it said consider restarting your source. Tried to shut down, but "shutting down" remained on the screen but nothing happened. Did a hard shutdown and now when I enter ny password, it says "The user profile service service failed the logon" and "User profile cannot be loaded" I've shut it down and tried again but it's the same thing. So now what do I do? I have windows7 and the problems I was having was with Firefox.1. What happens when you try to boot in SAFE mode?
2. How about LAST known good configuration?
3. Post the brand and exact model of computer. Also Windows 32 bit or 64 bit? What version of Windows 7? (Home Premium, PRO or one of the others)
4. What sort of restore, recovery, backups, or Windows disks do you have?Boot to safemode...and run a repair on the user account...I was able to get in through safe mode and ran a system restore point from last WEEK. I also ran malwarebytes anti-malware program. Is there another repair program I should run? Anything I can do to prevent the unresponsive plugins to occur, causing things to freeze? Whats CRASHING ? ?...you mention plugins so i assume a browser...which one ? ?

Solve : Images on Craigslist now showing up as little "x"'s at work?

Answer»

I used to be able to browse Craigslist at work, now the IMAGES are appearing as little x's. I don't have any other issues on other sites with images that I am aware of. I'm using IE with windows7. Because I'm at work, I'm pretty restricted on any setting changes, like trying it on Firefox. Is there anything I can do or try? Ask your system administrator.
Wild guess...
The work server might have a filter that prevents workers from viewing porn images. Somehow it flags the images on Craigslis. It's highly likely they want your workload to increase....Quote

Contact the companies IT admin and see if they can help. There are ways around this block, but we cant share them here. Additionally depending on the company that you work for, you could be terminated from employment if you use a hack to defeat content blockers. A SUGGESTION on how to GET there from work would be to bring your tablet to work or use your phone with a internet service plan or free wifi connection if available. Portable devices that are the property of the employee is what IT Admins have little control over especially if not using the companies LAN to connect. Some BUSINESSES allow a limited amount of portable device use on the clock and others have strict rules against the use of portable devices in the work place.

Solve : Program to wipe my computer?

Answer» HI -
I have a Lenovo computer and am running Windows 7. I want to wipe the computer and get it back to factory conditions. I have "Dban.org" but I was wondering if there are others which might be better. THANKS for suggestions. BobWipe?
Bob, Do you want to:
A. Get the computer back to how it was when you first got it.
OR:
B. Destroy all data so nobody else can use the computer or see what it had

The debug.com is an old tool that dates back many years. You should not use it on a modern version of Windows.

I have at least 3 problems that no body has been able to fix. Microsoft put 2 men on my computer for 6 hours and never did any good. They even refunded my money!!! My computer is a Lenovo and they sent me 4 dvd which they say will reinstall Windows 7 if the computer is at factory condition. I am running Windows 7 now and I want to keep that. I want to wipe the computer clean and start over. Thanks for your reply. BobIt;s overkill...if you boot to the Recovery media...delete the C:\ partition...format and continue with the install all is good...patio -
You know I'm not to swift. Joke!! Thanks for your reply. I am going to take my computer and the disks to the Geeks at Best Buy. I went there a couple of days ago and they told me they would have to have the disk to reinstall Windows 7. I am going to have them do the change because I am afraid I will make a mistake. This is something I don't want to have a problem with. After all it is only money!!! It will be a couple of weeks before I get it done. I will let you know how things come out. Bob patio -
As I said I will let you know how things turn out. I went to the Geeks at Best Buy and had them wipe my computer and reinstall Windows 7, after I got 4 discs from Lenovo. The first time it would not run but they worked on it again. It still was not right so I got a tech from my provider and he said everything was OK from his side. I could not find Windows 7 even though the spec said I had Windows 7. I then got Google Chrome. I can do everything I want to do on Chrome so I am getting along , however I would still like to have Windows 7. To say this has been a bother is an understatement!! I am writing this just in case someone else has ideas of doing the same thing. Maybe I should have GONE to Windows 10. BobWindows 7 is the popular computer operating system by Microsoft.
Google Chrome more often means the browser but not the system.
You have the Chrome browser for use on Windows.

The above is for the b browser, the the system.

Thanks for your reply. I understand what Windows 7 is. The problem is that the specs show that Windows 7 and SP 1 is in the computer but I can not find it. I want to use Internet explorer as my browser but I can not find it. I am using Crome as my browser. This works pretty good but it is not what I want.

Solve : regedit to change page size in Win 7?

Answer»

I changed one REGISTRY entry to make the pages bigger. But now I can't see or move the page to see the sides.
Anyone know which part and sub-part I changed?? Feeling really bad I did not write this down

Yes, Regedit usually OPENS at the last place you were at. Also, if you got the reg hack from a web page, look at your browsing history. Thanks
Yes it was from a web page, but it is not in history. Regedit has been used since so can't just undo.
I think it was within HKCU and remember changing value from -15 to 0.I know this was very stupid to do, but does any one know how increase the size of the page using a change of a factor in the register. Really need help finding this part of the register so I can reverse this
change. The result was that the sides of some web pages do not display at all.
Any help I would be grateful for.Quote

The registry is huge. We can't "guess" what you changed.
Step 1: when "tweaking" the registry MAKE A BACKUP before you touch any entry.
Step 2: write down exactly what keys in what section you changed.
Step 3: if it doesn't work, use the reg backup you created to reverse the change.

As the other said, you'll need to go into your browsing history and try and figure out where you got the advice and what you changed to undo it.Did you try a System Restore? No luck with System Restore, Thanks anyway to allMessing around in the Registry is not a good idea. Do you have your DISKS?

Solve : So many probs. Not starting W7: BootMgr is Missing | No Bootable Device?

Answer»

Long story SHORT, Acer Laptop Win 7 Home Prem. X64 was working fine & then I dropped it five feet from the ground. Then when I started it hung on the Win 7 LOGO.

Then I inserted the reinstall USB & entered command prompts & now it's not even displaying a logo. I'm assuming SOMETHING in the hard disc got partially damaged.

There are 2 scenarios.

1] When I go to BIOS and leave the hard drive on AHCI mode & try to start up, I get the 'No bootable device -- insert boot disk & press enter' error.

2] When I go to BIOS and the hard drive on IDE mode & try to start up, I get the 'BootMgr is missing press any key to restart' error.

BIOS detects hard drive. EaseUS partition manager detects the drive but can't recover any boot partitions.

I already tried the Startup Repair many times over, no luck.

Here are some of the commands I entered in to the command prompt from the reinstall disc and still no luck.

Code: [Select]bootrec /FixMbr
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /RebuildBcd
chkdsk /f C:
chkdsk /r C:
chkdsk
Also did these :

Code: [Select]Command #1 – diskpart
Command #2 – list disk
Command #3 – select disk X
Command #4 – list partition
Command #5 – select partition 2
Command #6 – active
Command #7 – exit
And tried these but RAN into errors on one of these steps I believe so I didn't complete the steps...

Code: [Select]bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
c:
cd boot
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd
Nothing worked. Hard Drive is a Hitachi HTS545050B9A300 . I haven't formatted the disc as I have important files on there,

Any little bit of help is appreciated. Thanks!
[/size][/color]If you are lucky, the hard drive got damaged, and you could buy a new one and reinstall Windows. If you are less lucky, the motherboard got cracked or otherwise damaged, in which case the device is scrap. It might be worth taking the device to a repair shop in case RAM modules need reseating.
Well here's what the Windows installation looks like, it seems to be recognizing the windows partition but unsure as to how to proceed

There is no Win install showing in that pic...it's asking where you want to install to if you look at it...

It would help if it was a full screenshot.Quote

That is bad news.
Remove the hard drive from the laptop and place it in an external enclosure. The use another computer to see if any data can be RECOVERED.
Buy a new hard drive.

Yes, there is a place in the upper right corner where I can put an address I want to use. When I use the address space in the lower right corner the same address appears in the upper left corner. I can not send a screen shot as I don't know how. As I have told you I don't know too MUCH about computers because I did not have anybody to teach me. Was this reply intended for Salmon Trout? His POST was the last one before you made your post, and you had already replied to my last post.

Bob, i mean no offense but I don't think any of us forum members can make sense of your comments, which you say are about IE (Internet Explorer). I have IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Opera browsers installed, and none of them have two address boxes. And, none of them have the address box on the upper right, it is on the upper left. So, what you're saying in your posts simply does not make sense. It sounds like perhaps the Address Toolbar on the Windows Taskbar:

Sorry about the confusion on the name for the command prompt. I have known it as terminal, DOS Prompt, Command Prompt which are all the same thing.

Are you connecting to the internet via wire and or wireless?

If wireless then connect directly to the router and try again.
If no then connect directly to the modem and try what were the results.

Now if the modem and router are one in the same skip the stuff about routes.

You can also try rebooting the network.

Turn off the modem and router. Wait a few minutes
Turn on the modem once it is completely up turn on the router.
Once the route comes on then try the internet.

Try browsing the internet in safe mode with networking. When you power on the system tap the F8 key.
Understand that safe mode uses basic display drivers and no sound. Try a few sites and see if we can replicate the issue.

What Anti Virus and Firewall are you running?

This has gotten out of hand. When I said the address was in the right corner it was a mistake. The address space is in the upper LEFT and in the lower Right. That said I suggest we drop the whole thing. I can use Google Chrome and everything is fine.
Thanks for your time. BobWell, Bob, sometimes we like to get to the crux of the issue and not just QUIT and move on because the communication has become cumbersome. And, for the benefit of all forum visitors who might read this discussion, leaving a point unclear is not the best way to end the discussion.

So, you have acknowledged your mistake is saying the top address box is at the upper right or your screen; you've now admitted it is at the upper left.

Now, let's clear up the other point. No matter what browser you are using, it does not have an address box at the lower right. Please look again at BC_Programmer's post and the image he posted. Do you see that address box at the lower right of that screen? I'm sure that is what you are referring to. Is that correct? Do you not understand that that address box is not part of the browser window, that it is on the Windows taskbar? In other words, if you close your browser, you still see that address box in the lower right corner of your screen. Right? soybean -

Solve : 4 Bit display? Help please.?

Answer»

Hi,

My monitor wasn't staying on. I couldn't restart my computer so I hard booted it. When it comes back up, the display is 4 bit. I try to change it, it won't change. I updated the video card, nothing. I've restarted the computer and still nothing. Not sure what I need to do. I appreciate any help.

Thanks! What do you mean by "4 bit" colour? 4 bit greyscale or 16 color? Did you replace the video card, or update the drivers? Did you use the right ones and do it properly?I didn't replace or change anything on my computer. It was working fine until the monitor acted like it wasn't ATTACHED to my computer.

When I go to change the display under display settings, I'll try to set to resolution to high with the colors at "highest 32 bit", I will hit apply and then ok to "do you want to keep these display settings" and it just goes back to saying color "lowest 4 bit".

What is your system model? I can help finding correct video drivers?

DO NOT use Windows update to download / install drivers. Always go to the OEM website. Follow the link in Jason2074's post above.

My computer is an Emachine model T 5274 , Vista OS, it currently has the GeForce 8400 gs video card. I'm not sure what other info you would need or where I would find it on the computer. Here is the DLoad for your driver...

I went to the given website and downloaded that update. It's still doing what it was doing before.

Make sure to install the driver after downloading.

No, it isn't. the administrator account is hidden, you have to perform a registry tweak or start in safe mode to even see it. Your account is merely a member of the administrators group; it's still a separate account, though. It might not even have a password.

So, you cant start windows in Safe mode, or you can start safe mode but cannot see admin account!

You need to be more descriptive with your replies!i can boot in safe mode but cant get past login either. the dont show up.

So the @ dont show up in normal neither in safe mode. already tried with another keyboard everything works perfectly besides the alt codes

Solve : computer screen freeze?

while watching tv through my pc after 45 minutes or so the screen will suddenly FREEZE showing strange patterns of color and the keyboard and MOUSE are inoperable also, i have tried a different tuner stick to no avail, the only way i can get the pc GOING again is to shut it down on the tower and then restart it but, the problem will always occur again. my pc is only 5 months old and has already been BACK to where i purchased it from and has not been fixed. could the problem be a sound or graghics card issue? You might wanna think of using your warranty here before its too LATE to save you from the troubles of replacing any parts.I have the same problem... i think it has something to do with a driver error but im not sure

Solve : Emachine E8400 with OS Windows 7 not booting?

Answer»

I have looked through recent posts, but there isn't the same model as mine having this problem.
My CPU clicks and beeps about 6 times on start up(now it doesn't stop beeping!)
It then does either of the following things:
Shows a screen with 'American megatrends' on it with info about the computer, such as stepping, cache, auto detect etc on it which doesn't seem to let me do anything. Down the BOTTOM it has press F1 to continue... when I do I get ... reboot and select proper boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key.
I then can't do anything except turn it off.
I don't have any cd's or anything for the system.
It is still under MANUFACTURER's WARRANTY but I'm not sure if they will fix this?
I can get into the set up utility but I'm not sure what to do here?
If anyone has any advice, I would really appreciate it!
Thanks in advance...If under warranty I'd take advantage of that. If you break the seal to inspect the ISSUE you will void your warranty.
Thanks, yes I think that's the smart thing to do.
It would have to happen on the longest public weekend in history!!!(In Australia)

Solve : Printer software download?

Solve : Black Screen and Overheating??

Answer»

My computer screen goes black, and it seems to coincide with overheating. It only happens when I'm watching something online. The screen goes black and I can usually hear the sound for a while before the computer just goes to SLEEP. I cannot PULL it out of the "sleep" mode, I just have to shut it down manually and start it up again. I was wondering if this a video driver issue, or if it was possibly that because I have to keep my laptop plugged in all the time (dead battery) the constant electrical input overloads and overheats the computer and causes this. I have an HP G60 with Windows VISTA. Laptops are more susceptible to overheat than DESKTOP. An additional USB powered external cooling fan will help lower the overheat. However check your laptop for dust and internal fan if its running fine. You could use a free hardware temp. monitoring software to confirm the heat problem such a s SIW or HWMonitor. Check also any power options set and disable it. You could also TEST issue by running safemode.

Solve : Windows won't reconnaissance when I press a specific button?

Answer»

Win7 won't reconnaissance when I press a specific button (Ö) it will only type it if I hold it down, but then I get like you usually hold down a key. It's nothing wrong with my keyboard, if I use the virtual one that windows have by default it won't work there ether, I have been trying to find where Windows save the configuration for the keys, but haven't found anything yet. Any help would be great.

I don't understand your question. Whatever you think "reconnaissance" means, it doesn't. What is the problem you are having?I thought it was a little weird, but can only blame my self when I used google translate to find the right word...

Anyway, if I press a the button it will not type anything, but if I hold the button down it works but I get more then one of the same letter, so it's the same as if I would hold down a regular button on any keyboard. But there is nothing wrong with my keyboard, and If I use a virtual keyboard I get the same error, so there must be something wrong with windows.

So in short, my keyboard works, the button wont work if I press it, it only works if I hold it down.What happens in safe mode?It did work just fine in safe mode.Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still OCCUR? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming process, but it is the BEST way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.Ok, I did a Diagnostic Startup and then it was working, and then I turned on my Startup items still working, but then I turned on the System service, and I got the error again, after that I disable every Service I COULD except 4 things that I wasn't able to turn off;

ESET Service
Group Policy Client
RPC Endpoint Mapper
Task Sheduler

But even tho those was the only one that was checked I still saw that many other services said it was running, but I still get the error.Ok first off, try to ignore I said "reconnaissance" it is really bothering me, I can't edit so I can't remove it and you guys get mad if I start a new post, but back to topic.

After some time some more testing I saw I couldn't shutdown;

ekrn
enentlog
gpsvc
p2pimsvc
PlugPlay
Power
RpcEptMapper
RpcSs
SamSs
Schedule
Wudfsvc

So it had to be one of those, but every time I start my computer I can type the letter in the "enter password" thingy, so I made a new account and I was able to type the letter in the new account, so I looked on with of those service was not there, but all of them was there, so there is none of them who created the problem, so there must be something on my account that is starting something, but I just can't find it. Nothing in the autostart programs, none of the service as I can see, so I have no clue what is doing this.

So anyone know if you can see EVERYTHING that starts on the account or even BETTER, know where to look?

Solve : Windows 7.?

Answer»

Hi. TWO questions about windows 7.

Is it worth the upgrade from XP, and when it says ONE user only, does that mean you can only install it on one machine, or is it one desktop and one laptop?

Cheers, guys.

FeenixThere is no direct upgrade path from XP to Windows 7, so you would have to do a clean install of Windows 7. A single user license is for one machine. The one desktop/one laptop THING is for Microsoft Office. I went from XP to Windows 7 when I bought a new PC one year ago, and I am GLAD I did. 10 years old XP feels very old fashioned to me now.

Solve : MEU HP PAVILION PC ELITE M9665PT NÃO INICIALIZA E TENTA A REPARAÇÃO DO ARRANQUE?

Answer»

Ver detalhes do diagnóstico e reparação

Recuperação do arranque;
Restauro do sistema;
Recuperação da Imagem do sistema;
Diagnóstico de memória do Windows;
Linha de comando

Em tentativas anteriores da recuperação do arranque foi dada como causa raíz encontada um ficheiro ci.dll danificado.
Usando a linha de comando pude eliminar esse ficheiro;

No final desta opção aparece Encerrar e Reiniciar

ALGUÉM TEM NOVAS IDEIAS DA FORMA DE REPARAR ESTA SITUAÇÃO SEM UMA NOVA INSTALAÇÃO DO SISTEMA E A CORRESPONDENTE PERDA DE TODOS OS DADOS PESSOAIS FICHEIROS E INSTALAÇÕES?Este site só PERMITE Inglês.

If it came with Win7 x64 or Vista x64, the right driver would have been installed. There should be no "special" driver for the card reader - it is built into Win 7. If it is a desktop (you don't say), you can also replace the reader in under 5 MINUTES or pick up one for under $10 online that plugs into a USB port.

Solve : Recovery discs not working with new hard drive?

Answer»

Greetings, everyone.

I have an HP laptop (pavilion dv7-1245dx) with a copy of Windows Vista installed, and the hard drive recently died (Windows won't even boot up, and a hard drive diagnostic kept failing - I was able to retrieve most of my files using Knoppix as a bootable OS though). I had never gotten around to burning my recovery discs for the computer, so I ordered new ones from HP. When I installed the new hard drive and popped in the operating system recovery disc, it gave me the following error message:

"This PC is not supported by the System Recovery Discs. You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs."

Error code: 0100-30FC-3602-3603

The original hard drive was a Hitachi, 320 GB SATA
The new hard drive is a WD 500 GB SATA

If anyone knows why this error occurred or how I can fix it, any assistance that anyone can give would be lovely. :]

Thank you for your time,
C It seems the computers that HP is now shipping have a recovery partition that must be used to recover the system, even when using the recovery discs.
You need to contact HP for further information. They might say you have to have the exact same hard drive. Or the drive may need to be pre initialized by Vista before it can be used.
Otherwise, installing Vista on a new PC from ground zero is a hassle. Unless you have the actual materials the factory used.
You need the specific drivers plus all updates that have been issued.

All users should make a recommended backup right after the purchase of any new PC that does not INCLUDES a full install disc(s).

If you do it yourself, allow at least eight hours of your ATTENTION. Without the factory loader, it is a slow process. The factory does it with an image of a pee-installed Vista for that model. But you will have to go through the process of installing all the drivers.

(BTW, this applies to most new computers being sold now. The user has to make an image or other type of backup. And the failure rate of OEM hard drives seems to be higher than expected.)
That is... tremendously discouraging.

I called HP, and ESSENTIALLY I was told that there was nothing they could do, but if I wanted to spend a couple hundred dollars I could get the laptop in-warranty and they would fix it for me. Unfortunately, I do not have a few hundred dollars to spare, nor do I feel particularly fond of HP enough after this to hand over my money to them.

Is it possible to boot into the system with a live cd (like Knoppix - but preferably not Knoppix, as the computer doesn't seem to like it much), and then clone the hard drive in its entirety, put it on the new hard drive, and then use the recovery discs to start from scratch and install Vista?

Thank you for your response - I had no idea this kind of practice was common now.I hate this. I have a reply to you and Firefox lost it.

Short answer. Paying $200 to fix a PC that should last five years is a crime. Don't entourage them.

You have the legal right to fix this anyway you can, short of breaking into the HP factory and stealing a replacement.

Many here will object to this. What I am saying here is that you bought the PC and thou are entitled to repair it any way you can. Nothing in the EULA prevents you from doing that.

Do you understand d what I am saying? Do have nave to PM you and spell it out. Some here will object if I tell you in detail how to put ,legally put, Vista back onto a laptop with no backup and recover possible.

Hint: Find a friend that has the same model, or one of the same series. Maybe only screen size and CPU speed vary
Need I say more?

Let me know if you need the rest of the story...
I wanted to use the method you suggested as a last resort - thank you so much for OFFERING it. However, I decided to try to clone the drive first, and this is the sequence of events that worked for me:

- Cloned the old hard drive using Clonezilla (the LiveCD didn't work for some reason, so I used a USB stick instead)
- Put the image file on the new hard drive using Clonezilla
- Windows would not load - not even a little. The main partition was not mountable, even using PuppyLinux
- I put in the recovery discs that I received from HP, but it still said it wouldn't work with the hard drive
- Restarted the computer, hit escape and got to a menu of options
- Chose "recovery" from amongst the options, which included things like booting options, BIOS, etc.
- Followed the screens, and it used the recovery partition (which -WAS- mountable, even though the other partition that was C: was not)
- Reinstalled Vista flawlessly from the recovery partition

Hopefully this helps anyone else with the same problem, provided that their recovery partition is intact like mine was.

Thank you for your posts and assistance! This seems to indicate that the recovery discs you ordered from HP were the wrong ones. That's what I thought too - but I double checked the ordering information, and it's the one for my model. The one interesting thing, though? When I go on the HP website and enter in the model of my computer (Dv7-1245dx, as it says on the bottom of the laptop), it will bring up Dv7-1245dx. However, if I put in the product number on the bottom of the laptop, it brings me to a slightly different system instead of Dv7-1245dx.

Even more interesting? I am having some trouble connecting to the Internet wirelessly on the laptop. I went to HP and looked up the page for both dv7-1245dx, as well as the page for my precise product number, in order to REINSTALL the drivers to see if it would help. However, the drivers listed on the HP site for this product are for a wireless device that is not in my laptop. Weird. Still haven't found the right drivers yet. Perhaps this in and of itself is the problem that I - as well as a number of other people - have faced with HP systems and the recovery discs. Even if we order it to go with our product number/model it could still be the wrong one. o-oDon't sweat it. You can easily recover. You can use ANY FULL VISTA DISC FROM ANY PC TO INSTALL FROM. It is amazing how many people don't know this. The only limit is to make sure you use the appropriate x32 or x64 version. Use ANY Vista disk you can get. During install, DO NOT ENTER A CODE, and select "will activate later". Also, select the version of Vista you had installed, i.e. Home Premium and REMEMBER TO FORMAT THAT NEW DRIVE! Install VISTA - you may have to download a lot of drivers from the HP site - and it will prompt you to activate. When it does, use you existing COA (Certificate of Authenticity) from the label on your laptop. It may prompt you to call MS, but they will only ask for the code that comes up on your screen. It is usually an "interactive menu" voice now. Good luck!!!

What does that mean?
At one time it was tested to be legitimate, - Right?

There is an issue where if you do not use your PC or keep Vista updated over time you may get that message.

If you can not resolve the problem, contact Microsoft. The number thing that comes with the CD i have it as well. Its been awhile since i updated it so i guess maybe thats the problem? I can not resolve the problem thats why im here heh. Thanks for the adviceWithout the details, I can only guess.
This was a home built?
Wa the CD a standard retail item?
Actually, a full install of Vista is a DVD. There are different versions of it. It should have a part of the rim with a hologram.

Here is an idea. Find a good Hard drive in your spare stuff. Put it into your machine. Install Vista from the DVD by booting from the DVD. Use the number that came with the DVD. Even without the updates, it should give you some time to activate the new installation..

Look this over and see if it applies to you.

Solve : windows update killed windows 7?

well today i decided to upgrade to INTERNET explorer 9 so instead of downloading from ms website i ran windows UPDATE but windows update also recemended that i install some security updates and a driver updates along with ie 9 and when it was done it ask me to ask me to save my work and reboot but after restarting i got an error sating the bcd or boot config data is missing some information so i booted in to xp which i also have installed and ran easy bcd but easy bcd cant find the bcd file and explorer says that the c:\windows dir on my win 7 drive is unreadable but it still shows a couple gigs of stuff in the propreties diolog.
is windows 7 saveable or is it gone forever and has to be reinstalled http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2004518i tried using the diskpart but when accessing the windows folder it tells me that the drive is not ready You should easily be able to do a System Restore - unless you specifically turned it off. The "System Restore" point saves your Windows state (including the entire registry). Just click the "Start" button and type "system restore", it will pop up, hit "Enter" and restore to the point it automatically made before it installed Internet Explorer 9. Your PC will take a while, and then reboot. Make sure everything is working right for a day or so, then download the installer from the Microsoft website.

I second Allan on this. I've seen many a computer screwed up by a Windows Update driver update RECOMMENDATIONS. It's best to leave your drivers alone unless there's a specific need to upgrade them. If it ain't broke, don't FIX it. If it is broke, certainly don't let Microsoft Update try to fix it. Go to the hardware manufacture's website.Quote from: pugboy on April 28, 2011, 10:25:00 AM

system restore i will do, but don't u think that he should boot into safe mode to do, because i think he cannot boot into windows right? so if he just press F8 at boot then get into safe mode to do that, i think its much easier to do that in this instance if he does not have a recovery disk.Hi. I was, prehaps, mistaken that the PC boots, but is messed up. If it does not boot, you can use a "Repair Disc" or the Windows Install disc to boot, and then select "Repair". One of the options would be to do a System Restore.

I also agree re: Windows Update drivers. They suck. I have run into problems many times, so I turned off the "auto-search" driver installer from hardware options in System Properties.

Solve : Closing Down Windows 7?

Answer»

I have a relatively new PC (bought in Oct., 2010) with lots of CAPABILITY, running Windows 7 Pro 64 Bit.

Virtually every time I shut down for the evening I get the message (DO NOT UNPLUG OR SWITCH OFF COMPUTER. INSTALLING WINDOWS UPDATES. INSTALLING UPDATE 1 OF 1) or words to that effect. The the update is installed and the PC SHUTS off.

Do you other Windows 7 Pro users also see updates this often? Just wondering.

ArtFunny, the guy sitting next to me has the EXACT same problem on the Pro version. I have Home Premium and have not seen this issue (just SAYING, but not saying it's limited to Pro). Said he's been having it for a few weeks now.

This is true but what u can also do is, just change your windows updates settings in control panel and set them however u want them. Or you shut down by choosing a normal shut down: ctrl+alt+del and choose (shut down) from the drop down list when u shut down.

i was getting this message too by the way

Ignore this advice. It solves nothing. Thanks for the replies. I don't think of it so MUCH as a "problem", but being a retired engineer I was just curious as to the fact that Microsoft found something to correct almost every day. Initially I came across several program messages in other things I would run, to the effect that the program was not compattible with "64-bit", but now these seem to have ceased.

How do i take a crack at solving this annoying lag . . . thanks . .What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

I do wonder if i have to MUCH running or to much on msconfig.ex and who knows what ELSE - later . . Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem STILL occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming process, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.Ok and yepp v v v time consuming . . .All good things are worth waiting for...

Solve : Help needed with copying files with very long *pathnames* -- plz & thnx!?

Answer»

Hello folks:
I am trying to copy a folder to another disk -- on Windows 7.
The folder has subfolders and files, and this way there are many hierarchical subfolders. So the files down at the bottommost subfolders have really long path-names from the root folder. That is: the path-name, e.g., folder\sub-folder\sub-sub-folder\.....\file is quite long.

Now, the standard drag and drop (or copy and paste) does not work satisfactorily. It complains that the path-names are too long. I would rather not move the affected folders and files higher up in the hierarchy to shorten the path-names because logically they belong to where they are now.

So, the question is if someone really knows how to copy such hierarchically deep folders. I am not sure but someone told me that the *Copy/Paste* cannot handle path-names longer than 164 characters. My file path-names are much longer than 164 characters.

Also, I tried *Robocopy* (available from Microsoft tech. site) which supposedly copies files with long path-names. The problem I ran into here was that the *number* of folders and files in the destination drive is *not* the same (after copying) as that at source. So, I really have no faith that *EVERY* folder and file has been copied by *Robocopy*.

If someone has some tips for me I would greatly appreciate that.
THANKS very much.
nhmxxx

In Windows 7 and Vista one can synchronize two folders. Have you looked in this as a possible solution?
This may provide some helpful information.
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Sync-Center-frequently-asked-questions
Thanks Geek for your speedy reply; much appreciated.
So I have used *iomega* external drive and it had features to do a backup on the fly or at scheduled times.
This worked for folders and files there were not hierarchically deep (i.e., long paths). May times, I had to shorten file or folder names so that it would do the backup of these. Very frustrating ....

So, what I need is a tool that would copy my source folders and files, no matter how long the path names are, to the destination drive.
Now, *Robocopy* (http://www.sqlmag.com/article/sql-server/tool-tip-the-awesomeness-of-robocopy) I believe does that but the result shows that the number of folders and files in the source and destination are *not* the same after doing the Robocopy. Thus, my confidence is rather low that everything has been copies to the destination drive.

Any more ideas?
cheers and thanks for now!!!
nhmxxx No solution yet.

Cheers!!!More stuff.
http://download.cnet.com/Path-Copy/3000-2072_4-10036463.html

There is a solution to this, but it ,is beyond my abilities.
You need an stand alone application tat does not depend on Windows Explorer.
Either a convoluted SCRIPT or MAYBE a C++ program.
The issue is Windows Explorer.Any Application that call into the Windows Explorer stuff will fail on extreme long path/file names.

The path, I thin k, can be 255 chars, and the file name can be 67 chars. Not sure where I saw that. Depth beyond 4 is an issue.

Yet apparently the system can actually do very long paths. Duh?

read this Microsoft KB article regarding obtaining latest DirectX.

I guess you may have already tried, but maybe give the download that M'Soft's official KB page links to a try.DirectX10 was not meant to be uninstalled, especially not the way you were doing it. Since Vista, DirectX is part of the OS, unlike 9.0c and previous versions. Click this link, download the installer, run it, and it should repair whatever damage you've done to Dx10.

If your games won't run under Dx10, download the Dx9.0c redistributable and install it. You should also be able to find the exact same installer on one of your game CDs, as they usually attempt to install it if it's required.as i told previously isntaller gives me an error(i have tried that one too)DLoad and run the Windows Installer fix...Quote from: alluton on May 06, 2011, 08:12:26 AM

You said DirectX 9 failed. My first link was the installer for DirectX 10 and 11, since you've now deleted portions of that. DirectX 10 is part of Vista and you should repair it before trying to continue with installing Dx9c. That, or you can do it the hard way and reinstall your OS. Either way...

Solve : Computer freeze in sleep mode?

Answer»

I looked and this may have been covered before but I did not SEE it.

When I let my computer sit for several minutes the screensaver will come on and then after another few minutes the computer goes into sleep, When I move the mouse or hit a button to bring it awake, it goes to a black screen or background art and the only way to fix it is reset the computer. I have also tried bringing it awake with the power button but it is a 50/50 chance of working or getting the above mentioned screens.

Any thoughts??The first thing is to disable or change screensaver DISPLAYED and also close other/all programs running or open then CHECK sleep mode. Also check your power options SETTINGS. If this is a desktop, there is no reason whatsoever to use any power saving features.
