Solve : how can I safely check out a link?? |
Answer» http://veehd.com/video/4595542_PBS-Frontline-The-Spill-2010. This is a program I want to watch but, there's no ADDRESS when I float my mouse pointer over the download button that they say I need download. So, I can't see where the link leads. And I can't USE "SAVE file as" and then scan it because I don't get that option. It seems the only THING I can do is blindy click the link to see what happens - but that's not what I want to do. How can I check to see were it goes or scan it before I put it on my computer? If you click on the above link you see a SHIP carrying an oil rig and on that page I click the play button that takes me to the second page where it asks me to download something. The second page concerns my problem.Download link: http://install.secure-softwaremanager.com/installer/zcdownload/2a0c00bc27a71ee5ab9d24e27c785523c9f516f83f7a1fad5020403a3042cfb898501291ac:d803d86061eb8efbe4425246f65af457/?lp=http%3A%2F%2Fgalleries.secure-softwaremanager.com%2F874399c0b4%2F854098c4ba1a |

Solve : Processes using a lot of memory! Help!? |
Answer» Recently, my PC began allocating very large amounts of RAM for certain system processes. [had 8GB, removed faulty RAM within the past month or so] Sure you got the bad ones ? ? I'd run MemTest for 2 hours just to be certain...With today's computers rather large amount of RAM, RAM usage shouldn't be an issue at all. All you have to worry about is CPU usage, which in your case is barely over 1% (if I read it right from your screenshot). Not to mention, that Vista and 7 handle RAM in a very different way than previous Windows versions.Thank you for the replies! patio: I'm fairly sure, I ran memtest on each 2GB stick individually as well as in current and past configurations, though I did the 5 minute check. Broni: I only wonder why my PC's performance is taking a hit...? I have not had these processes using so much memory at any time in the past. Thanks again! What is actually wrong with your computer, aside from TASK Manager numbers?A noticeable drop in performance, increased load times. It might not sound like a dire problem, but this is a gaming computer built for high-end gaming and it can't run average games!Boot time has nothing to do with increased ram usage - nor is it anything with which you should concern yourself. As for a "drop in performance" - please explain EXACTLY what the issue is.Not boot time, load times in applications. I have never had frame rate issues in games before, and I am suddenly experiencing terrible frame stuttering. As I use my computer, I feel that it is constantly being taxed on memory. I have also never seen these processes use anywhere near this much RAM before.Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, REBOOTING after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem. You may also... Download Autoruns for Windows: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx No installation required. Simply unzip Autoruns.zip file, and double click on autoruns.exe file to run the program. Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location. You must select Text from drop-down menu as a file type: Attach the file to your next reply. |

Solve : Caps lock key opens my Microsoft Office Outlook.? |
Answer» ctrl + shift opens Outlook ctrl + shift opens OutlookNo, it does not. Egads... So what does it do if you don't have Outlook ? ? Actually Mrs.J i don't believe anyone has mentioned it but could it possibly be a setting in Outlook itself ? ? Worth a looksee...your keyboard may be fine...Quote from: patio on May 07, 2011, 01:28:07 PM Actually Mrs.J i don't believe anyone has mentioned it but could it possibly be a setting in Outlook itself ? ? How so? I don't see how a PROGRAM could start itself by detecting a keypress that happened before it started, if you see what I mean. Quote from: Salmon Trout on May 07, 2011, 01:35:19 PM How so? I don't see how a program could start itself by detecting a keypress that happened before it started, if you see what I mean.Welcome to Windows 7 Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 07, 2011, 02:53:40 PM Welcome to Windows 7 I have been using Windows 7 since December 2009 and its doesn't seem any different from its predecessors in this respect. Quote from: patio on May 07, 2011, 01:28:07 PM Actually Mrs.J i don't believe anyone has mentioned it but could it possibly be a setting in Outlook itself ? ? As far as I now, Outlook doesn't have such a function. Seeing as this started with water spilling, most likely the keyboard is sending out the signal for the shortcut KEY that many keyboards have that opens the default mail program. If she installed Mozilla Thunderbird and set it as the default mail program, I bet it'd open when she pushed caps.Quote from: quaxo on May 07, 2011, 05:14:29 PM If she installed Mozilla Thunderbird and set it as the default mail program, I bet it'd open when she pushed caps. So she should either disable whatever hot key processing application she is running, or go into its settings and disable the one that starts the email application. Or kill the Office Sidebar maybe? Quote from: Salmon Trout on May 07, 2011, 05:20:41 PM So she should either disable whatever hot key processing application she is running, or go into its settings and disable the one that starts the email application. Or kill the Office Sidebar maybe? Actually, that might work. If the full software package is installed for the keyboard (not just the generic Windows driver), there is usually an option there to change or disable hotkeys. If the mail key is disabled, theoretically it should ignore that signal, regardless of it comes from the hotkey itself of through this malfunction. The keyboard doesn't know the difference, which is why it's doing it in the first place. If the caps lock is still doing what it should do (toggling caps) and triggering the mail program, telling the keyboard to disable the mail shortcut should make it only toggle the caps again. It will of course still be sending out that mail signal, but it should be harmlessly ignored. Mrs. J, have you installed the software package that comes with that keyboard? If not, you might try that. If you lost the CD, look on the bottom of the keyboard for the name and model of that keyboard. The software should be available through Logitech. Solve : To Update or Not to Update, that is the question? |
Answer» My Computer works great with Vista. Several People have told me that Windows 7 is much more stable and is great looking also. My problem is this, how compatible will my software (Office 2003, Dreamweaver, etc) be with a new version of Windows. I lost a few things that were none essential to the Vista compatibility question and I don't want to lose more. Software is expensive. I am guessing I should just be satisfied with a computer that works fast and looks good and not try to keep up with the CompGeeks. What is the general feeling on this matter. Windows 7 is much more stable and is great looking also. People say this about almost every new OS release. I've got Vista on my laptop which I've had for two years now. I've never had a serious issue with it and have only twice seen a blue screen, both due to my actions of pushing too much, nothing to do with Vista. Windows 7 is nice looking though. I have one computer running Vista 32 bit, and one running Win7 64 bit.... I prefer Vista. I have a lot of compatibility issues. My son cannot play his online games with the Win 7. The games come up, but they run in ultra slow motion. Like about 5% of the SPEED they run at in Vista. I have used the compatibility function in Win 7 and set it to run as Vista compatible, but it does not help at all. I would downgrade to Vista if I knew how. Basically, I think Win 7 sucks.Quote from: bilklb on May 08, 2011, 01:45:34 AM My son cannot play his online games with the Win 7. The games come up, but they run in ultra slow motion. Like about 5% of the speed they run at in Vista. I have used the compatibility function in Win 7 and set it to run as Vista compatible, but it does not help at all. This isn't typical and there could be a lot of causes for it. I play several online games and MANY offline games and have had no issues with Windows 7. If you'd like help getting to the root of the problem, we'd be more than happy to help sort it out in another thread.I think Microsoft has mentioned that "Games for Windows" branded games will work on Vista, XP, and 7.... And @bilklb, just curious, what are these online games? One thing, if you have an older game that predates win7, then maybe that's why you get compatibility issues. And so maybe you want to run in compatibility mode in those cases?Quote from: 2x3i5x on May 09, 2011, 02:26:43 PM I think Microsoft has mentioned that "Games for Windows" branded games will work on Vista, XP, and 7.... I've never heard such a thing and if Microsoft ever made this claim it was a lie. Halo 2 was branded a "Games for Windows" game, but officially it will only run on Vista and 7. There are also several titles that are branded "Games for Windows", but are only officially supported on Windows XP and Vista, not Windows 7. Games for Windows, like Steam, is an annoying gimmick. They even try to compare themselves to Steam on their official GfW website. But there's no guarantee that a Games for Windows game will work across the BOARD. It depends on the game. This is the specific blurb for which I saw Microsoft's claim on Games for Windows Quote 2) Compatibility. Games for Windows branded titles work on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7-based PCs, including both 32 and 64 bit editions. Games for Windows titles that support controllers are also compatible with the Microsoft XBOX 360 controller for Windows, including the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows. They even support widescreen resolutions and more. But still ... anyway ... for the original poster (dhinds), if vista works fine on your pc and can do the things you would like to be doing on your pc, then why UPGRADE now?Quote from: 2x3i5x on May 09, 2011, 11:47:37 PM This is the specific blurb for which I saw Microsoft's claim on Games for Windows Oh well, Microsoft lied then. Like I said, Halo 2 and other titles won't run across the board. Just check the SYSTEM requirements of a lot of Games for Windows titles. |

Solve : Computer shut itself off now wont boot? |
Answer» Ok my computer was running fine when i was playing Arma2 and it SUDDENLY just shut off ( no shutdown sequence or ANYTHING) It proceeded to reboot like i hit the reset button, thought this was weird but thought watever. However, when it was rebooting, it suddenly shut off again, this time in a different time interval. I tried unplugging the power cord and swwitching off the pc with the switch on the back. But when i push the power button it just did the same thing, the light would turn on on the fan in the front panel of the pc, spin for awhile and then shut off. Sometimes it would make it all the way to the log in screen or even let me log on, before shutting off and trying to restart. This pc is only a few months old and havent had any problems with it. If its bought brand new and is still under warranty, I would seek that first. |

Same thing on iTunes won't let me import because you have to open a window for that , and it DOESNT come up. Someone please help Im running Vista and have no idea what to do Have you tried running in Safemode with Networking, Administrator? Also clearing your temp.files might help. Other than that, a corrupt .exe file or INFECTION might be the cause of the problem... |

Solve : batch script?? |
Answer» I have downloaded NotePad++, and, according to the ONLINE HELP (see page at http://npp-community.tuxfamily.org/documentation/notepad-user-manual/commands), it seems possible to run a command that would allow me to execute a scripted file. compile_a_java_program.bat $(FULL_CURRENT_PATH) If necessary, add path info for your batch file. You batch file might need a tweak or TWO: Code: [Select]@echo off javac %1 cd /d %~dp1 java %~n1 pause I threw in the pause so you can see the result before the WINDOW closes. I also added a CD command to navigate to the directory where the class file lives, just in case the directory is not on the classpath variable. Good luck. |

Solve : OE6 won't save password? |
Answer» I'm switching from an old desktop (XP) to a new laptop (WinXP operating under Win7). I have IE 8, OE 6. I can get online OK but when I go to get in my OE 6 for my emails, it won't let me save my password; the box is greyed out. USED to be my online service (bellsouth, i.e. AT&T) would walk me through the changes, but now they won't, it's not in their 'job description'. They tell me to call Microsoft and pay. Let me restate your post. Thanks, but the reason I want to continue using OE 6 is that I am so used to it, I have lots of important files in it, etc.OE6 CAME with IE6 (Internet Explorer 6), just as OE was bundled with versions of IE preceding 6, but after IE/OE6, OE was no longer bundled with IE (versions 7/8/9). IE7 was released in Oct. 2006; so, no new versions of OE have been released since IE 6, which was released back in 2001. You now have Windows 7 and it's time to move on to a newer email client too. Your OE messages can be imported into Windows Live Mail. Reference: Importing your e‑mail, contacts, and calendar into Windows Live Mail |

Solve : Password problem? |
Answer» Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and Windows Vista. One day I tried to log on as the "owner" and it asked me for a password. I don't remember creating a password. I can log on as a guest..but I can't download, upgrade, anything without the "Owner" password. I followed the steps to reseting the password. I created a password reset disc, then followed the steps to reset the password. It took me all the way through and asked me to create a new password. I created the new password and hit "finish" and I got an error message saying "an error occurred when reseting password" and that's it. I've tried it a dozen times and always the same thing. Yes and they walked me through the reset disc and all the way through to when I get that error message and they didn't know what to do at that point. I was just wondering if anyone thought it was worth it to take it in to a shop or if I should just wipe out Windows and reinstall it. And if so, how do I go about doing that? Well, a visit to a repair shop is one option, but if you have either a Windows install disk or a Dell recovery disk, you could try using those. Do you have either of these? Quote Have you tried calling Dell and asking for a "reset password" Don't rely on those support people so much, they don't help much. Tell me otherwise. I don't care. Quote What a charming guy.....If YOU took the time to read my post thoroughly you would see that what I'm asking is how to wipe out windows and reinstall it OR if someone AT A COMPUTER REPAIR SHOP could fix this...I did NOT ask for help in reseting my password. You said the password reset disk didn't work. You can try the one I posted in the link below. As for wiping and formatting, that's trivial. You can ask someone at a shop to do it for you. Quote I was just wondering if anyone thought it was worth it to take it in to a shop or if I should just wipe out Windows and reinstall it. Don't give up yet. Quote Yes and they walked me through the reset disc and all the way through to when I get that error message and they didn't know what to do at that point. Use this reset disk. It says it's for NT, but it works for XP, etc too. http://www.pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/ Scroll down to the Download part, and download the first zip. Burn it to CD. Reboot and change the boot order.Allow me to explain why I gave an answer that sounded rude. Based on his post: 1. There is no way to know who the OP is other that what he says. He is ready to wipe the entire disc clean. Would that not suggest he has not used the computer very much? 2. The owner of a new computer should have MADE a backup plan soon after the purchase. Vista has tools for making a suitable backup system. 3. By now most people are aware that computers need some kind of security. How could he forget a password if he was the one who did it recently? (Hint: try your nickname.) 4. Dell has very good support. But you have to spend some time on there web site. They know who is the registered owner. His bad mouthing appears to a subterfuge for not using the Dell resources. Dell would nail him. 5. This site gets get lots of requests for password reset and reasonable methods it can be found in a search on this site. 6. A well-trained technician who knows Dell laptops can install Vista on the laptop without the need to use a bootleg disc. The product key and the legit Dell recovery disc would be used to put the computer back to the original state. His reluctance to pay for his alleged mistake suggests that he may not be the real owner of the computer. A sorry owner should be willing to go to great lengths to recover his system. My critical observation is only from his post and his response. If indeed, he is the rightful owner, my apologies. Thank you! I'll try it. And I agree, I've never had much luck when taking my laptop to a shop. First off, I'm a woman. Secondly as I said in my original post I NEVER created a password this just started popping up when I tried to log on. I VERY much own my computer and I'm not very tech savvy so I had no idea I had to back anything up or even how to do it, I don't know anything about bootlegs..or that they even existed. And lastly, even had I forgotten the password, In this day and age where you need passwords for everything I HARDLY think I would be the first person...or an idiot...for for forgetting a password, which is why everything has the "forgot your password??" field. Apparently it's not such an uncommon thing. Anyway, @ Linux..thank you so much for your help. And by the way "geek after dark" thank you for making my first time in this forum such a pleasant experience. And for making me feel like an idiot. Quote from: mercy667 on May 16, 2011, 12:42:06 PM And by the way "geek after dark" thank you for making my first time in this forum such a pleasant experience. And for making me feel like an idiot. My apology. I failed to recall others have had the same problem and I should have been more helpful. In the future I will try to be less judgment of people. Loss of Vista password may happen after a Microsoft update. This is documented by Microsoft and I should have read that over before I posted. Again my apologies. I am the idiot, not you.To be fair to the ol' Geek, this site gets plenty of "how can I bypass a laptop password?" questions. They are often accompanied by the most outlandish supporting stories - the kids, wife, girlfriend, etc had been fiddling with it. Sometimes the original posters respond angrily and aggressively to our questions aimed at clarifying exactly what happened. We are aware that laptops are portable and easily acquired by other people than their legal owners. Sometimes they are sold on to unwitting third parties who may perhaps deserve sympathy but are still not going to get password cracking help. We are also aware that this site is indexed by Google so that others than the original poster and the repliers may come here to read threads. Therefore we feel we have a responsibility not only to the asker of the question, genuine or not (and we have no way of establishing this) but also to the owners of laptops in general. I share his attitude of caution about "forgotten password" stories. So don't feel too bad, Geek. Thank you Salmon-Trout for the words of encouragement. Now here is why I must be an idiot. Quote Re: *!NOT your usual Vista Password Problem - Incorrect Password even every time even after resetting This is a part of a thread that came from a post back in December 2008. It seems that it has gone on to become a popular topic on other forums. Here is a recent one: http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-systems-and/NOT-your-usual-Vista-Password-Problem-Incorrect-Password-every/td-p/36959 It might be the same poster, but others report that same thing. So it is not just one user going around and spreading a rumor. Microsoft has not given a CLEAR answer, even on forums linked with Microsoft. Until Microsoft gives an clear rebuttal, we have to assume that it is true. Checking other forums shows the issue has NOT been resolved for all cases. If it was a flaw, MS should have fixed it by now. What do you think?Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 16, 2011, 01:49:59 PM What do you think? I think the problem you read about was about 2 years ago, and I would try this: at the login screen, do control/alt/delete to access the screen where you can change the user name to Administrator. Assuming you didn't enter a password for the Administrator, simply tab to password and hit enter. This brings you to the administrator screen where you can hit start, run, control userpasswords2, and enter. This allows you to change your USERNAME password from whatever it's become back to blank or whatever you wish. Now restart and you'll be able to access your own stuff again. Another option is a System Restore from safe mode. Personally I think Vista owners should do themselves a favour and save up enough money to buy a Windows 7 upgrade. I guess this doesn't help people in the OP's position. |

It is not just the question of reading more memory. The Intel-AMD 64 bit instruction set is now a mature CISC that surpasses anything else widely available. It can lead to very powerful optimized code that can be much faster than anything up to now. Time will tell.64 bit Windows 7 is backwards compatible with 32 bit applications made for Windows 7. It may have problems running programs not built for Windows 7. Fear not, just install XP mode to run your application. XP Mode can be downloaded free from Microsoft. 64 bit is more favorable to users who are using applications heavy on system resources. I am running Adobe CS5 without any problems on my Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit. I was ABLE to add memory more than 3.2 Gb which helped alot in what I do. Thank you very much! |

Solve : After clearing the computer, ePSXe and other programs have stopped working.? |

Answer» My laptop used to run very smoothly with no flaws, and all of my programs were fully functional, but recently my friend decided to remove loads of stuff from my laptop in order to make it run faster. He claims to be a computer expert, so I let him do it. Once I got it back I can no longer run ePSXe (the only thing I ever even DO on my laptop, unfortunately)... Yes, they do boot faster. Actually SSDs are currently the choice of gamers and multimedia enthusiast. Here is a list of advantages: 1. Not Fragile Like Hard Disk Drives 2. Cooler and Quieter 3. I believe what timwil56 meant was Windows 7 64 bit. 64 bit Operating systems has been out since 2001 with Windows XP 64-Bit Edition .My apologies yes I meant Windows "7" 64 bit but the more important question is how much room does Windows "7" 64 bit take up on an SSD i.e. what is the minimum size drive that will run Windows "7" 64 bit?My current Win7 64bit install is right around 12G... Your mileage may vary...Just saying, despite the technology used in SSDs, the correct term for the 'room' taken up by a Windows installation is 'disk space', not 'memory'. That's something different. Having got that out of the way, my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit install, just over a year ago, into a 100 GB system partition, was about 12 GB at first, before I installed any programs, and copied my documents, pictures, etc from my older computer, but it now takes up 46 GB, so I would allow a serious amount of headroom in a real world setup. Like the others, I don't think the expense would be worth it. Just for clarification that 12G i show is just the Windows folder... I'd consider a 100G partition if your including installed apps... Course i use more apps than most.Quote from: Salmon Trout on May 18, 2011, 09:57:57 AM Just saying, despite the technology used in SSDs, the correct term for the 'room' taken up by a Windows installation is 'disk space', not 'memory'. Like the others, I don't think the expense would be worth it. 12GB is the initial space it would use. The more programs and updates you install, the more space it would consume from your storage device. If you are really into PC performance then SSD is for you. Most gamers prefers SSD due to performance. 100 Gb would be good enough for the OS to be in. I suggest have another hard drive for your data. There is a Crucial 128 GB SSD which is around $250 right now, although I have seen it on offer at $199. A 100 GB 7200 rpm rotating drive is around $100. As for the performance advantage, personally I feel that SSD's are still much slower than ram. all it really cuts time on is the time it takes to load data into RAM. but no matter if you use SSD or old fashioned hard drives, once the data is loaded into the RAM, it gets processed and used only as fast as the RAM and CPU will allow. So it really only speeds up the 'opening' of programs. many programs use the hard drive a little bit here and there after being loaded, but we're talking about mostly very small files that will load in far under 1 second no matter what type of hard drive. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2009/10/the-state-of-solid-state-hard-drives.html http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2010/09/revisiting-solid-state-hard-drives.htmlQuote from: BC_Programmer on May 18, 2011, 02:40:44 PM http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2009/10/the-state-of-solid-state-hard-drives.html Yes, I rate Jeff Attwood, so after I checked out those 2 items (I had read them before) I had a look at the most recent stuff on Coding Horror, and look what he wrote on 4 May 2011... Quote May 2, 2011 He mentions his friend who bought 8 because of his 2009 article, and they have all failed! He concludes, however... Quote Thing is, SSDs are so scorching hot that I'm willing to put up with their CRAZINESS. Consider that just in the last two years, their performance has doubled. Doubled! And the latest, fastest SSDs can even SATURATE existing SATA interfaces; they need brand new 6 Gbps interfaces to fully strut their stuff. No CPU or memory upgrade can come close to touching that kind of real world performance increase. http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/05/index.html I think that when he says a "good" backup plan he means a good backup plan. Daily image backups? Hourly if you are doing mission critical stuff e.g. development? RAID? To a platter drive? Not only that but i've read 3 articles that all stated they are hard to erase data completely from...if you're concerned about security... In my mind they are aways from being ready for prime time...I don't think I'd personally ever be able to justify the higher price point for a SSD, at least at the prices they are now compared to standard magnetic drives, regardless of the benefits. As for Atwood/codinghorror, I've always tended to take his blog posts with a grain of salt, especially after he started acting like he was a security expert. What I originally liked about Atwood wasn't his insight or knowledge, but his enthusiasm at learning new things. He was like a young coder documenting every cool new thing he found and it was a good blog up until the day he decided he had learned enough. But I digress. Quote from: patio on May 18, 2011, 02:53:22 PM Not only that but i've read 3 articles that all stated they are hard to erase data completely from...if you're concerned about security...arguably, if somebody was concerned about security enough for that to matter, they would already be using something like truecrypt. With brand name 1TB, SATA II drives selling for under $75, and coming down every day, and SATA III drives in the pipeline, SSD drives are still out of reach for the average user. I have over 3TB of storage, all on SATA II drives and there's no way in heck that I could ever afford to do that with SSD drives. Maybe some day, when the bugs have been worked out and the prices come down........ Eh? Cheers Mates! Shadow |

Solve : not enough space!!!!? |
Answer» Hi every1 , this is my first post in this website , i jus checked out this site , and i serously liked it , Now i ll come to my Problem Have you cleared out your old system restore points? CC cleaner can do it for you.So can disk cleanup - no need for a 3rd party app Quote from: Allan on May 18, 2011, 03:17:39 PM So can disk cleanup - no need for a 3rd party app I realize that, but I tend to like to use one app to do multiple THINGS, if they can do them all well. Personally i would not install Win7 on anything less than a 40-50G partition/drive... But thats just me...NO, it's "not just me". It's common sense. Of course Win-7 is bigger than XP. By a country MILE! It's actually HUGE! I used to backup my XP drive to a single DVD, with some compression, but with 7, I have to use a whole stack of DVD's to back up C:. Anyway your question should be "How do I increase the size of my C: Drive?" I've seen it told that Windows 7 can do that, but I'd rather use a third party program, like Easeus Partition Master. Leave at least 40gigs of HD space for Windows 7 and all its BS. Then put all non-essential stuff, like movies and music on a second partition, or just write them to DVD's, or an external hard drive. CCleaner? Ya gotta be kidding me. I used that twice over several years time and it destroyed my hard drive both times. If you'll run windows own "Disk Cleaner" in the Extended mode, it will take out a lot more junk than in the Default mode. Ever hear of that? Here's the shortcut that does that: %SystemRoot%\System32\Cmd.exe /c Cleanmgr /sageset:65535 & Cleanmgr /sagerun:65535 The first time you run Disk Cleanup like that, it asks you to select what you want it to delete. I always select everything BUT, Office Setup Files and 'Setup.log' files. Those need to remain. Everything else can GO! On my own PC, to save space and keep things running lean, mean and clean, I wrote a batch file to clean out all the stuff that other programs don't remove. I run that cleanup.bat program from my Startup folder, for a daily cleanup. I call that my FREE Maid Service. Yuk! Yuk! First, you have to start out with plenty of space for your OS, programs and data files, then you need to develope a plan for keeping it clean. Good Luck, Shadow thnx Fr the Help every1 , one thing more i needed to ask , i jus checked there's folder in C Drive MSOCache , its taking 800 Mb of the space , are these the the system files , if not then wot are they and can i delete them ?? also there's a folder PROGRAM DATA that includes folder like HP ,NOKIA Suite , Yahoo , temp ,can i delete them too ??Quote from: TheShadow on May 18, 2011, 06:18:29 PM CCleaner? Ya gotta be kidding me. I used that twice over several years time and it destroyed myI don't know what you were doing but CCleaner definitely does not destroy hard drives. If it did, millions of users would stop using it and that hasn't happened.Just avoid their registry cleaner module, as one should avoid ALL registry cleaners.http://bc-programming.com/blogs/2011/05/windows-disk-cleanup-in-depth/ PS: I think CCleaner also enumerates those keys so we can assume it runs the same cleanup logic found in the same DLL files, as well as WHATEVER it does on it's own. |

Solve : Duplicating display between laptops? |
Answer» I have a laptop with a SEVERELY messed up screen. It's BASICALLY unreadable. I was wondering if there was anyway I could use a VGA cable to connect the messed up laptop to my good laptop so that my good laptop shows the messed up laptop's screen. I know I can do it with a TV or a normal monitor, but right now all I have access to is my good laptop. No, that won't work. The laptops aren't designed to be USED as screens. I'm sure there's a program out there that could do this, but if you can't see anything in your bad laptop, I don't think there's anything you can do but to repair it. |

Solve : bat/vbs files? |
Answer» I was wondering how to MAKE a bat file run a vbs file. CALL it using the appropriate scripting engine, either CSCRIPT.exe or wscript.exe, using the //nologo SWITCH (unless you really want to see a message from Microsoft) If the visual basic engine is already installed on your PC, and it should be for any version of MS Windows, then just call the .vbs script from the batch file: There are two Visual Basic script engines usually installed in Windows, Wscript.exe and Cscript.exe. Your approach works, but it does not give control over which engine is chosen, you just get the current default (Wscript on a new install but it COULD have been changed to Cscript) and furthermore you are at the mercy of the current script engine settings such as Logo / Nologo. Of course this may not matter. Code: [Select]@ start "Path\to\yourfile.vbs" start cmd.exe and write: Code: [Select]start /? for more info |

Solve : BAD_POOL_CALLER BSoD? |
Answer» OS: Windows 7 Microsoft (R) Windows Debugger Version 6.12.0002.633 AMD64 [recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Quote IMAGE_NAME: memory_corruption A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting/running computer with one RAM stick at a time. NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A B. If you have only one RAM stick installed... ...run memtest... 1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip) 2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-....iso.zip file. 3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-....iso file. 4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ 5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive. 6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc 7. Click on Browse for a file... icon: 8. Locate memtest86+-....iso file, and click Open button. 9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD: 10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run. The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed: It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests. This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight. The FOLLOWING image is the test results area: The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you SEE ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM. This may be a dumb question but do I physically take one out RAM stick, start it up and then switch if there are no errors with that one? If not..what is the alternative?Exactly. Use the computer with that one stick for couple of hours, or so...OK, thank you! I will test that out today and see if there are any problems.Ok, haven't had time to do the RAM test, but am doing it now..I just had another BSoD crash not too long ago.. *sigh* I will let you know how the RAM test goes. Edit: Here is what WinDbg said about the dump file created from today's BSoD Quote
The IMAGE_NAME has changed from the first dump file I posted..it now says "IMAGE_NAME: Ntfs.sys" What exactly does that mean? That's a system file.....could be caused by almost anything. Let's see what you got from RAM test.Well, I've tested each stick of RAM, and I think I may have found the faulty one...The first one I tested, I ran the computer all day on it, and there was no problem and almost no difference in computer speed. I then changed sticks, and as soon as my computer had booted up and logged in, my computer started to run significantly slower and was extremely laggy. There was no error message, but the speed of the computer was different. What should I do now?Run the computer with the stick #1 only for a day, or so. See, if you'll be getting any more BSODs. If not, do the same with stick #2.I have been running the computer with #1 for the past 2-3 days. No BSoD'sVery well then. You can try running the computer on stick #2 only for couple of days and see how it goes, or simply replace it.Ok, I will do the switch tonight then, run it through the weekend and let you know. Thanks for all of the help so far! You're very welcome Ok, so I did the switch two nights ago, and so far, there has been no BSoD...so I guess I was wrong about the supposed "bad stick" being #2. Initially after boot up and logging in, it ran slow, but now it seems to be pretty normal speed. What should I do now?? Should I let it run another day on #2 or do something else? There are some cases, where the RAM may be not seated properly, or contacts were not properly working and reseating RAM may help. Put the other stick in and see how it goes. |

Solve : Batch file 'START' command issue? |
Answer» HI Everybody! This is my first post, and I'm not especially experienced with batch files, but here's my problem: I was trying to write a program that: 1. Checks to see if *****.exe is running 2. If it is running, notifies me 3. If it is not running, notifies me AND starts the program After spending an hour before realizing that the command 'TASKLIST /FI' has no errorlevel...I finally got it to run the logic perfectly so the program notifies me accordingly, BUT when the start command is run it starts a new command prompt window with the file's address as its name! Here is a copy of the script so FAR with asterisks in place of unnecessary INFORMATION: @echo off tasklist | find /i "*****" if not errorlevel 1 echo "*****************************" if errorlevel 1 echo "*****************************" & start "C:\Program Files (x86)\*****\*****.exe" Fairly simple methinks, but I can't figure out why it won't start the ACTUAL program, and instead creates a new command prompt instance with the name being the exact address (C:\Program Files (x86)\*****\*****.exe) including the .exe part. I hope it's an easily FIXED problem, and thanks for your help! |

Solve : Is there a way to block users from installing any programs in Win7?? |
Answer» I just finished installing Windows 7 on my Mom's PC. She has a lot of bad luck when it comes to computer problems, but I think most of the problems are the result of my brother (who STILL lives at home) thinking he knows what he's doing and then messing things up. Is there a way to set up the computer so that users will not be able to install or uninstall programs, etc? I'm thinking of how my PC at work is, if I attempted to download and install something, I get a message that I need admin rights to proceed. I have a FEELING the easiest way to do it would be to set up individual password protected accounts, and give him one that doesn't ALLOW installation or modification. Is there a way to set up the SYSTEM WITHOUT setting up separate accounts though? You'll need to set up limited user accounts. |

Solve : win 7 back to xp? |

Answer» I dont know why I did this but I thought the win 7 ultimate was a better PERFORMER I tried loading back the xp but it keeps going in circles back to formatting I really don't like this win 7 32 bit system, if anyone care to show me the steps to load back xp it would be appreciated ,My wifes computer has win 7 home edition and it has no problems with anything I put in, if I run the same programs on mine it tells me that its missing something.., soo I just want to go back to xp where it never gave me problems i know I need drivers but where do I find them ?First of all, any problems you are having with W7 are on your end, not the OS's. If you want help with W7 we will happily provide it. However, if you want to revert to XP you need to do the following: when I format the drive it goes thru the process and ends up in the same place, last time I did this win xp automatically takes over but not this time it keeps going to the same window that requires me to format again thats where Im stuckI don't know what this means. Please explain in detail. And you are BOOTING to the XP cd, correct (you aren't trying to run it from within Windows)? You cannot install Windows XP successfully after you use Windows Vista or Windows PE 2.0 to create partitions on a hard disk He has to DELETE the partition. If I turn the computer off ( win 7 is what I have before I turn off ) I am restarting booting with win xp cd ,I go thru the PROCEDURES of what it reccomends, 1 to set up windows press enter 2 to continue installing a fresh copy press esc thats what I do then it just ends up going back to the 2 no xpThen the previous post is correct. Before formatting, delete and recreate all partitions.Ok, finally I got thru I dont know but that was weird ,Im thinking maybe I got a bootleg version of win 7 ultimate, I bought this on ebay ,If I did ..does anyone know how to identify a bootleg , it looks like it should, I just don't understand why it was difficult to run programs on win 7 ultimate,All software did work on my wife 's computer and she has home edition, Well anyway Im back to XP and everything is running as it should no problems with any kind of software add on . Solve : Installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1, now hard drive red light keeps blinking? |
Answer» I Installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1, now hard drive red light keeps blinking red, is that normal or is my power supply going. If it is normally Green and now Blinking Red then yes your system is reporting an error. I'd check with your computer manufacturer to see what this means. And if its a system you built, look up the motherboard and the troubleshooting section to see what this error means. It could be that the system is detecting a FAILURE in the drives near future or soemthing else.the green light is on there is another light and it blinks red, the red light is the hard drive - it is blinking non-stop. There is no problem with the green light, it stays on all the time.I suspect more INFO here is needed... the green light is on there is another light and it blinks red, the red light is the hard drive - it is blinking non-stop. There is no problem with the green light, it stays on all the time. That could just be the HDD activity light. However, as Patio said some more information may be required. I know just enough to get myself in trouble and I do know that you have to be careful moving files around. Replacements for Media PlayerHowever. Microsoft says the WMP will handle the external drive properly... Monitor External Drive with Windows Media Player 11Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 22, 2011, 02:22:29 PM Windows Media Player may not be the best choice.maybe not. But it's not necessarily a bad choice. Quote Have you thought of using another player if needed? What reason do you have to suspect another player might be "needed" (and how exactly are you defining "needed" in that context?) Windows Media Player will play files that are on an external drive just as well as they would on a internal drive. Quote There a number of users who, for some time, have decided not to use the media player that comes with the Windows system. And most of those users feel they are fighting some kind of war against Microsoft and Internet Explorer. a 'la that toastytech idiot. I mean, really, if you don't like Microsoft, that's fine, but if you continue to use their products and just *censored* about everything instead of, you know- switching to Linux/BSD or another OS, you just like making noise. (Even better, the toastytech guy professes the superiority of... Windows 95! Haha). Quote Here is just one of such users what rant about why...Outdated. Site was last updated in 2003, it seems. Which explains why their "alternatives" are so utterly ridiculous. I particularly like how the only mention of anything BSD-based is lower down, all the "alternatives" that are Linux distros are defunct or generally not very popular or maintained anymore. I suppose this is a natural effect of having a site that hasn't been maintained in nearly 10 years though. Also: the information is wrong. IE wasn't first released in 1996.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 22, 2011, 02:22:29 PM Windows Media Player may not be the best choice. Have you thought of using another player if needed? Well, if you're happy with WMP or your Zune program's media player, then by all means go ahead and use those. I'd just use whatever you're most comfortable with that does what you need it to do. Though if you get the klite codec pack, you should be able to play most videos and audios straight off on your pc, it does come with a media player classic home cinema though it also lets you set WMP as default if you wish to do that instead. My point was that if you are not happy with WMP you can find alternatives. One that I like is the classic WinAmp, which a free download HERE.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 25, 2011, 01:04:34 PM My point was that if you are not happy with WMP you can find alternatives. Banshee is a great media player as well, which I use on my laptop. The OP asked about moving his files. If that includes burning them to Audio CD format he needs to understand a detail about WMP. Right now I am playing and AUDIO CD that I recently brunt fro a MP3 collection. Here are two images... Here is what you see with WMP Here the same CD with VLC: |
