Solve : Black screen, white arrow; won't load log in screen?

Answer»

They told me to hit F8 when its starting up. It takes me to these set of options which allows me to choose Repair Computer. Then I choose System Restore, and then my laptop RESTARTS, asking me which mode to START up in. Prevx support told me to choose 'Safe mode with Networking'

I do so, but it still takes me to the black screen and white arrow
Try F8 again and choose 'Last Known good configuration'

You could ALSO try this
Unplug the POWER, remove the battery and then HOLD the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot.HAHAHA IT WORKED!!

Yeah I had to configure it to its last known good configuration lol

It then restored itself and started up fine!!

Thanks for your help!
Glad to help

Solve : Win 7 sp1 desktop icons changed to boxes?

Answer»

It's not complicated and it's not about fear of giving out email addresses. It just about the way things are done here.

While the link I posted shows how to get the picture in WINDOWS 7, Allan's shows how to upload it to an image host and post it on the forum. Or you could even just ATTACH the picture to your next reply:
1. Click "ADDITIONAL Options..."
2. Click "Browse..." and select the picture.
3. Click "Post"

Solve : UNIBLUE???

Answer»

hello everyone...I'm 49 and very new to computers, teaching an old dog and all that,I've even gone to the library and checked out" Computers for dummy's".I need a book 2 STEPS lower than that.Anyway here is my Dummy question. What is the deal with Uniblue?I've heard that its not so good but it's installed in my start-up section and sometimes a window will pop up asking if I want uniblue to make changes to my hard drive. Is this the same uniblue? Should I be clicking yes ?will appreciate an answer.Thanks. Uninstall it. It's a set of panacea tools - some of which can cause PROBLEMS. You should never use any sort of REGISTRY CLEANERS or boosters - the CAUSE problems, they don't cure them.I wouldn't hit a dog in the rear end with any of there products...

DISCLAIMER:
The above is a personal opinion and not meant to offend any of the fine STAFF at Uniblue including the programmers: Staff; and up to the guy who cleans out the lavatories...

Solve : re install win 7?

Answer»

Hi.
I have been helping a friend re install win 7 on her laptop, all went o.k. until the activation when we realised the label with the product key had faded so badly it was illegible.
I E-mailed Toshiba the serial number asking if they could supply a copy of the product key.
They reply was as follows:
Thank you for your email. We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble activating your operating system after REINSTALLING.
Our image of Windows 7 is a pre-activated OEM version, the sticker on the bottom of your notebook is proof that the copy is licensed you would not be able to activate your install with this key.
If you are installing your own version of windows this would have been supplied with an activation key of its own?
If you are reinstalling our image of windows, this will not require activation?
When you purchased your notebook you would have been prompted to create a set of recovery discs containing your operating system.
If you do not have access to these you can purchase replacements here.
Now correct me if I am wrong but I am sure I have done this before using a standard win 7 DISC and the code on the base of the laptop.
Is there a way of activating using the windows Old file?
Thanks.
What Windows Old file?Hi. Allen.
When I re installed windows it backed up the original windows as windows. Old.
I have looked in this file and it contains all the old o/s and the old registry, so I’m guessing that the original key would be stored here somewhere.
Why did you reinstall the OS - and why did you install it as a second OS?Hi.
When I got the machine it would only go as far as the boot option screen whatever option I chose resulted in blue screen

I REMOVED the H/drive and used a usb caddy to my computer and ran a virus scan which came back with lots of infections which the virus scanner removed.
I then replaced the H/drive back in the laptop and it still would not boot to windows just blue screen.

I then downloaded a win 7 disk and ran a windows repair which was unsuccessful, I then decided to re-install the o/s.

While the install was taking PLACE I got a message that the original o/s would be saved and stored as windows. Old, and that I would be able to access the files in the .old folder but the o/s in that folder would be unusable. My guess is that it does this so you can access your own old files as well as any third party drivers that may be needed.

So there is only ONE o/s on the machine and the backup of the old o/s.
Hope that makes sense.

You need to connect the drive back to your machine and copy off the data files. Next put the drive back into her machine and wipe the drive clean by formatting it. Then use microsofts disk or the laptops restore disks to do a fresh clean install. Do not use anything but an orginal disk and not something you downloaded. After you have installed a fresh install of windows then do all the updates and install a good antivirus software. Last copy the data files back onto the machine. But only after they have been scanned again to be sure they are clean.

Thanks, all working now.

Solve : No media on drive?

Answer»

I have Windows 7 and wish to do a backup to a CD. I get the MESSAGE
There is no media on the drive.
IA variety of causes are possible that can result in this message. Has this device ever been able to successfully BURN to disc? Is the type of disc compatible with the optical drive? What is the material and source of the media you are trying to backup? Is the proper burning drive selected (if there is more than one in the computer) for the project? truenorth I am beginning to think the drive might be faulty. I do have trouble burning. I think I'll PUT in a new drive and see what happens. ThanksWell that certainly is an option. However were it me i would try the problematic drive in another computer (providing we are talking about an internal drive within a desktop as opposed to a laptop) and see if the results are the same.truenorth
P.S. ASSUMING that indeed the drive being discussed is an optical drive capable of "burning"(it might SURPRISE you to know that some people believed they could "burn" with rom drives).I would ask if you are capable in "playing" discs on the drive? This could point to a problem with the "writing" laser only. Whereas if both reading and writing are problematic then it tends to point to a failing drive. Yes, I can play disks on it. But it is sometimes difficult to [pick up a diskWhile i believe it to be unlikely that it is your current burning software i am going to suggest a DVD and a separate CD burning software (i use both and both are free) just to see if that makes any difference.
DVD= http://www.sothinkmedia.com/movie-dvd-maker/download.htm Download the free version. I have not found it necessary to upgrade to the paid version. An added advantage with this program is that it will automatically adjust the video to fit a 4.7 gb dvd disc without any apparent limitation.
CD= http://cdburnerxp.se/download Very popular and easy to use with many features.
Goodluck and keep us informed as to your progress on your issue please. truenorth
P.S. Don't know what you mean here (do you mean detect the presence of a disc?). "But it is sometimes difficult to [pick up a disk"

Solve : rename documents?

Answer»

My problem is to rename library DOCUMENTS titles with larger TYPE FONTS and in color.
I am using win 7
Thanks
Eddie460
It is not exactly clear what you want to do. What "library documents" do you mean? Do you mean you want to change the size and colour of Windows Explorer fonts?
If you just want to rename them you can open Windows Explorer and right CLICK on a library at the left and click rename. In my DOCUMRNTS library I have SEVERAL files that I wish to rename (right click and choose rename) in a larger font and in color.
Thanks for your interest and response.

I have several files that I wish to rename (right click and choose rename) in a larger font and in color.

This is Windows Explorer, right? You may be able to get part of what you want. You can't have some files showing in different or larger fonts but you can have encrypted files showing in green and compressed files in blue.

Solve : youtube/skype crashes EVERY TIME!?

Answer»

Ok so here is the problem, and this has been HAPPENING for a very long time. When i start up my computer, i can use Skype and YouTube FINE for a while. Eventually i notice that my my Skype calls/chats have stopped working. Skype won't let me end calls, and it seems as if the PROGRAM has just frozen completely. Whenever this happens, i am also unable to use YouTube. Whenever i TRY to start a YouTube video, it just freezes. As i said before, both Skype and YouTube work fine when i startup, but always freeze soon after. These issues ALWAYS come together!!

I have tried everything from reinstalling flashplayer and skype in safe mode, to doing system restores. All of these temporarily fix the problem, but it eventually comes back.

Someone please give me some insight into this issue because if i can't skype or go on youtube on my computer, a lot of its' functionality is gone.

Thank you.

Ryan.Have you tried uninstalling/disabling any or other protection softwares installed such as system scanner, webscanner, anti malware, spyware to RULE out the problem? It could also be a hardware problem such as a RAM or PSU were as on other threads suggested an overclocking settings.

Solve : Computer Keeps Freezing?

Answer» PLEASE help!

Windows 7 Hp G62 Notebook

Pc keeps freezing within 5-15min of starting. Have to hold down the power button to restart. PC also runs hot!

I have tried RUNNING every diagnostic program on my pc. Also virus and malware. Every program says my pc is fine.

My pc WORKS IN SAFE MODE.

I don't have the disk to reinstall windows and only have 1 date (a few days ago) in my system recovery.

Please help. Any ideas? What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?No new hw or sw, no virus, no error messages. I THINK around the time it started happening my pc did an automatic update and I downloaded them but not sure.I'd like to try a clean boot since you say it runs fine in safe mode.

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective STARTUP" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the CAUSE of your problem.

Solve : Can't run videos on many sites - for example CNN?

Answer»

Hi Folks,

I can't run videos from many sites, for example CNN. This is a new problem and I can't pin down what caused it. I am running Windows 7 - 64-bit. Att CNN I can see the Play button (TRIANGLE in the center of the screen) but when I click it the video portion of the screen just displays a blank. The remainder of the screen is fine. This is true for all videos at CNN.

I am using IE 9. 64-bit version.

Any help WOULD be appreciated.
Cheers,

have you tested on other browsers?

I just tested Safari and it work just fine. Many SITE's videos do run, such as UTube. This has always worked in the past on the same system. I am running high speed DSL on a dual quad Mac Pro with 16MB of RAM, plenty of disk space (430 GB free) and no other application running.

Do you have Adobe Flash Player installed?
[/quote

There is no Adobe Flash Player 64-bit for Windows 7, so at the present time the answer is no.

TIA,
Shane
Chrome 11.0.696.71 has a version of flash built in and works fine with videos. I prefer firefox and use it most of the time, but for to be able to watch videos I keep two browsers open all the time. Adobe has a beta version for 64 bit OS's and browsers named square but I couldn't get it to work so I gave up and just use Chrome for videos.

Even though 64 bit operations systems have been around for a while, apparently nobody at Adobe has ever heard of them.Quote from: rthompson80819 on June 01, 2011, 11:26:18 PM

Solve : Which programs are necessary??

Answer»

Hi -
I have Windows Vista HOME Basic 32 bit. When I go to "msconfig" and click on "services" I get a listing of a LOT of services. I assume these are programs but I do not know what any of them do. Some are running and some are stopped. I am sure there are some I will never use as my use of my computer is very simple ( I don't play games, use facebook, etc). Is there any place that I can go to to find out what each program does so that I can either keep it or delete it? Thanks Bob http://www.blackviper.com/category/guides/windows-vista/Allan -
Thanks That appears to be what I was wanting. I"ll print it out and study it carefully. Thanks BobDon't fall down the rabbit hole reading too much into it...

Agreed. You asked a question and I answered it - but here's the rest...... If your system is working properly, LEAVE IT ALONE. I can't begin to tell you how MANY problems are caused by people "tweaking" the services.Allan -
I will take your advice and leave well enough alone. If it is not broke don't fix it. I could not understand a lot of Blackviper so I will stay where I am. Mark this solved. Thanks BobFor the nube, leaving it alone is probably the best advise, but for us tech's, Black Viper is a wealth of information.

I used his advise to disable 24 services in XP and about 40 in win-7. There's just a pot full of services that 99% of folks will never use or need in a million years. Stick with the services mentioned in the "SAFE" column.

It was pretty easy to find all the services I wanted to disable and then write them into a BATCH file.
It takes only about three seconds to run that batch file to disable every redundant service in the OS.
I have one for XP and one for Vista/Win-7.

Using MSCONFIG is great for minimizing the number of things starting up with Windows, but not good for
disabling services. For that, you need to run "Services.msc". (for tech's only)

* I've found that Windows 7, right out of the box, only runs at about 30-40% efficiency, due to all the overhead and SAFE DEFAULTS. It's a jungle in there!

Cheers MATES!
Bobh - I strongly urge you to just leave things as they are and NOT to follow the advice in the above post.http://www.overclockers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=410234&page=1&pp=30Hi -
Thanks for the replies even after saying I was going to stay with what I have. Somethings that were suggested were too complicated for me (I don't know much about computers). Another forum suggested that I Google each program to find out what it does but that didn't really help me decide if I could delete any. Once again I say thanks. You guys have helped me a lot over the months but in this case I'm going to stay where I am. Bob

EdYou MUST take the laptop back to the vendor. The longer you wait, you may go beyond the warranty or refund privileges that apply in your country. The retail refund RULE is not the same as the warranty of the manufacturing. The retail warranty maybe be very short, but gives you greater power to ask nor a full refund.I bought laptop in UK (pcworld.co.uk) what can I say is the most unfriendly employees which I saw in my life. I brought my laptop back to pc world and you know that was hard to tell they, please check my laptop, because they don't care about purchaser(I read this in review as well).
They checked battery life, fan (through bbc.com TV) and said everything is fine and looked at my like I am stupid and what I am doing here.. one of thing maybe they was unfriendly, perhaps my English wasn't good to tell they strong opinion

You think something is wrong with my laptop ? Sounds like I will contact with manufacture, but I don't now that will help, because I never had this problem. The laptop is guilty until proven innocent.
The fact is you just bought it and it failures under normal use. It is obvious to you that it is not working right. The bounden of proof is on the vendor, not the the new own er. The device must perform as represented. Any deviation on new equipment is cause for refund. This retail sales rule is in both North America and the EU and UK. If you had purchased it wholesale, the rules are different.

Whether or not you are an idiot has noting to do with it. You have rights as a consumer. The longer they put you off, the less chance you have have in a COURT of law. You need to file an action against immediately. Tell the manage of the store you want a replacement or refund. Having an non-certified salesman tell you it is alright is not the proper response to a complaint about a consumer electronic device. His judgement has no value in a court of law he he does not have certification.

Buying goods - your rights (uk)

I agree with you, tomorrow I will going to with my friend and ask for refund, hopefully everything will be fine, and I hope I don't have mistake, but Laptop fan and HDD is making me angry.Excellent!
Here is some information from the UK source I posted above

Buying goods - your rights

This information applies to England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

About this information
What are goods
Your legal rights when you buy goods
Your rights when things go wrong
..........

About this information

This information applies mainly to problems with goods bought from business traders based in the United Kingdom.
...
If the goods were bought from a private individual, see under heading Buying goods from a private seller.

For more information, in England and Wales, about goods bought in another European Union member state, see Buying goods and services in Europe in Consumer fact sheets.

What are goods
Examples of goods include:

clothing, furniture, and other household goods
food and drink
goods supplied as part of a service, for example a reconditioned engine
animals, for example some pets
crops that have been harvested.

Your legal rights when you buy goods

When you buy goods (including goods supplied as part of a service), the law gives you certain rights as a consumer. The law says that the goods must:

be of satisfactory quality. This means that the goods should be free of any faults, including minor ones. They should be of the quality that a reasonable person would expect given the description, PRICE and any other relevant circumstances. You can take into account the appearance and finish of the goods, and whether there are any defects (including minor ones). You can also take into account whether publicized information about specific features of the goods is accurate, and whether the goods are safe when used properly
be fit for the purpose. This means that you must be able to use them for the purposes that you would normally expect from this type of product, or any purpose that you have told the seller you want to use them for
match their description. This means that if there is a verbal or written description of the goods, it must be accurate. And if you choose goods after seeing a sample, your goods must match the sample.
And if things go awry...
Quote
Your rights when things go wrong

If you buy goods from a trader and they are not of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose or don't match their description, the trader will probably have to put things right. It is the trader who is responsible for this, and not the manufacturer. If a trader tells you the manufacturer is responsible, or that you have to make a claim on a manufacturers' guarantee, you do not have to accept this.

Depending on the circumstances, you may have one or more of the following rights:

to get all of your money back
to get some of your money back
to get the goods repaired
to get the goods replaced
to get compensation.

You will not have these rights if:

there is nothing wrong with the goods – you have just changed your mind about wanting them
you examined the goods, or a sample of the goods, when you were buying them, and the FAULT you want to complain about was so obvious that you should have noticed it
the trader pointed out the defect that you now want to complain about
you have damaged the goods yourself
the problem is the result of normal wear and tear
the goods have lasted for as long as could reasonably be expected.

In some situations, you only have limited rights when things go wrong with your goods. These include where you have bought ...

But if it is a normal Retail store, you have full rights.

Here is why members of this forum should not help you fix it.
Quote
You will not be able to get a full refund if you have:

continued to use the goods after you realized something was wrong
tried to repair the goods in any way
kept the goods for too long without telling the trader there is something wrong with them, or noticing the fault.
Know you rights as a consumer!
It does not matter if your are an idiot.
CONSUMERS can be idiots just like anybody else.I will print out this.. maybe I can print something more what else you can suggest ?
I know they will check one more time laptop and will say nothing wrong everything is fine , because my Laptop is getting crash and frozen after 3 hours..
and that's sounds like for they 'not me' (You will not have these rights if: there is nothing wrong with the goods – you have just changed your mind about wanting them)
but I will not give up.. what can you say about attached file, maybe you can see problem about no reason restarting ?)I was not able to get your attachment.
If you gave seen the laptop failure more that once after just doing very little for3 hours, that is reason enough. The maker of the laptop says that it will work in normal indoor environment. The vendor has to support this claim and can not modify it.

Answer»

I'm not trying to beat up or gang up on anyone. But I have a problem when highly inaccurate statements are presented as fact. And if I'm mistaken I'd just like to see some documentation. Certainly no offense is INTENDED to anyone - I just want to try to get at the truth.Quore by SHADOW:- * Never use Kingston ram. A high percentage of it is Refurbished ram*

I have had 2 UPGRADE's of my pc 1 small and the last a large upgrade and alway's used "Kingston" without any problem's. But to rubbish some thing that you may not have tried is wrong.
The piratical limit is sometimes call the 3GB limit with reference to 32 bit versions of Windows.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_GB_barrier

The OP indicates he has free space on the hard drive. One option is to install XP along with Windows 7 in a dual-boot configuration. After that he can try either OS and judge for himself which better.

Did he say he has 14 TABS open at once? Is there not a ten tab limit?

Did he say he has 14 tabs open at once? Is there not a ten tab limit?

Well, as I am currently using Firefox, I just did a tab test, and realized you could go way past ten, 20, 30 even!
So that answers that question.

Solve : Videos/moving ads not appearing where they should.?

Answer»

Hello. I have a rather odd problem with my computer. It's an Asus running WINDOWS 7 (not even a year old) and a few months ago whenever I turned on the computer I got a "GFXUI has stopped working error". I had stopped it by re- installing some .Net FRAMEWORK thing (not claiming to be a computer expert in the least) a few minutes ago (though the computer is running significantly slower now). But recently a new problem had arisen that I thought would be fixed when I got the error to go away. Videos and moving ads and generally anything flash- related on web pages are not showing up where they are meant to be. For example: say when I click on a video someone posted on Facebook or what have you. It disappears and shows up blinking unstably in the upper left- hand corner of my screen, leaving a white void on the page where it is supposed to be. But I cannot click any of the bottons where it shows up in the upper- left. I have to try to FIND the pause/stop/whatever bottons in the void it left. Ads on pages just BLINK all over my screen in pieces, usually in the upper portions of the screen. Anything flash- related will disappear visually from the screen if I move it down (if parts are click- able, I can STILL click on it - but it's a GUESSING game). I've never seen this problem before and was hoping someone could help me out.

Thank you for taking the TIME to read this.
- ErinHello,

Funny thing the exact same thing was happening to me just last week and it was making me crazy so I researched it and lo and behold I found out the solution , and it's an easy one here it is if you are running Windows 7, and Internet Explorer

1.Click on Internet tools icon ... top right hand corner of Internet Explorer
2. Click on Internet Options
3. Click on the Advanced Tab
4.Use Software rendering instead of GPU rendering which is the very top option needs to be checked , if not check that box check Apply and then you are done .. you may need to reboot ...

This was the solution that worked for me and when I actually did it all of my videos were playing properly , it may have something to do with the newest version of Flash , I tried removing it and then reinstalling it and nothing worked until I researched and found this solution ... Hope it works for you ...Oh my goodness, thank you so much! It totally worked, wow! < 3 Thank youuuu~! Hhahaa, that was so annoying!

Solve : how to stop update notices?

Answer»

for both ADOBE and ie I am getting daily update notices. I don't want to install these how do I stop them? thanks for the helpBoth programs should be kept up to date.
Any reason why you don't want to update them? For Adobe the last time I updated, the screen was too strong and hurt my eyes. For ie I don't like the NEW format, I deinstalled the update.I can only say one more time...
Both programs have to be kept up to date, because they're prone to all KIND of security vulnerabilities.

Alternatively, you can uninstall Adobe Reader (33.5 MB), download and install Foxit PDF Reader(3.5MB) from HERE.
It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.
Note: When installing FoxitReader, MAKE sure to UN-check any pre-checked toolbar, or any other garbage.

Solve : installing a webcam?

the instructions that came with my logitech webcam say to install the cd containing the software and plug in the USB when i am prompted to do so. when i put the cd in nothing happens and when i open it, there are about TEN folders that i have no idea what to do with. how do i install this?Quote from: mollmollmoll on June 24, 2011, 11:34:05 AM

when i put the cd in nothing happens ...
What software/app did you intend to use it with? With your webcam connected, open an app (Skype, YAHOO! Messenger, etc.) that you would use it with and see whether you now have video present in that app.

Solve : HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook?

Answer»

I have the notebook posted above and it's running windows vista home premium edition. It was performing an automatic update and now it won't start up. It gets to the screen where is says
"Configuring updates: Stage 3 of 3 - 0% complete"
Do not turn off your computer.
It hangs there for 20-30 seconds, no advancements in the 0%, then just automatically reboots itself. I've tried starting from last known good configuration, tried safe mode. It just does the same thing. Will system restore delete everything on my computer like my documents or photos??
HO Pavilion dv6700
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Pentium Dual CPU T2370
3 Gig MemoryHi

System restore will not EFFECT any of your photo's or data. it simply resets windows system settings and files. I would recommend you use system restore to repair this. instead start in safe mode and go to add remove programs select show updates, select show by date and remove the last update. This should allow you to start in normal mode. And then try windows update again.
As i said before , i've tried BOOTING using Last known good Configuration and using safe mode....both dont work or else i would have...ive gone into the bios and tried disabling the automatic update during the bootup process but there's no option for thatHi well i'm asking myself why the windows update didn't load, have you checked your not running low in hard disk space REMEMBER with vista about 20 gb's free is a good minimum.
yeah there's plenty of room on the drive. this is brutal...there is the option i press f10 which brings me to recovery manager...its tries to use system restore but there's not logged saved dates for it....then it says i can do a system recovery...will this delete files?Quote from: DPalmz on May 27, 2011, 06:30:28 PM

ive gone into the bios and tried disabling the automatic update during the bootup process but there's no option for that

The wouldn't be. The updates for the OS (Windows) are in no way related to a BIOS setting.

You said booting into Safe Mode didn't work. Could you explain what happens when you try? Going into safe mode, it shouldn't be trying to install updates.when trying to boot into safemode it does its usual way where you see all the dos commands loading...and then once it stops...its reverts itself back to where it just shows the window logo in the middle and the status bar below it...then it goes to the next screen where it tries to do the update thing....then rebootsTry the steps here:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358

Basically, it tells you to either A) Do a repair with your Windows disc or B) Do a system restore.

If that doesn't work, contact support.

Note: This is advice from one of the Microsoft TechNet guys. You need to boot to a Vista DVD. If you don't have one, you can download a Vista recovery disk here: http://neosmart.net/blog/2008/windows-vista-recovery-disc-download/

Use an image burning program to burn the file to a disk. If you don't have image burning software ImgBurn is a good program for this task. You can download it here: http://www.imgburn.com/

If you're not sure how to burn the disk, you can find a guide for burning the image here: http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/G/Burning+ISO+Images+with+ImgBurn

Now boot to the disk and choose Command Prompt from the list of recovery options.
At the C prompt type:
cd Windows\WinSXS
and press enter.

Then type:
del pending.xml
and press enter.

Restart the computer and boot to the hard drive. Same problem?so i did exactly what you said JJ 3000. After it loaded the disk, it came to a windows screen and its wanting to install windows. A splash screen shows up with 3 options.

Language to install:
Time and currency format:
Keyboard or input method:

NEXT

there was no option to choose command prompt??

Choose your language option, then click next. The repair option I believe is on the next screen if I remember right, bottom left corner. Says "Repair your computer" or something to that effect. It will search for your Vista installation (actually, all installations if you have more than one), then ask you which one you want to repair (since you only have one, it will only show you one option).

On the next screen, there will be an option for getting to the command prompt, as well as a number of other repair options.A walkthrough on how to use command prompt, vista -> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial147.htmlQuote from: quaxo on May 28, 2011, 09:30:29 PM

i did all this..it found no versions of windows installed?? so im guessing i need a full vista cd now to get this to install....since I'm assuming somehow everything is deleted?? I have windows XP pro on my desktop. Tried installing windows xp directly...its copying the files and then all of a sudden it says

Windows XP
Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer??? (WHAT THE???)

seems like things are worse off then when we started doing this.....Hi.
I just had the same problem with the same model machine.
My first thought was a dying H/drive if you hit f10 on start up you will enter the set up, select diagnostics, and run the H/drive test; mine came back o.k. although I do believe this model does suffer with h/drive problems.

I then borrowed a vista disc and re installed, I used the original key on the base of the laptop to ACTIVATE, and it worked fine.
The only thing is you must use the same vista installation that was originally on the machine (32-bit or 64-bit) to stay legal.
Then all that’s left is go into device manager and download any missing drivers.

Solve : I think my internet settings are messed up? (Win7)?

Answer»

Well on my LAPTOP, I get about 1.5 mbps on a speed test and on this computer, I get .25 mbps. It's obviously not my internet, so what is it? I might have accidentally changed some settings. Help is very much appreciated. Thanks! What do you mean you might have changed some settings? Well when I was using utorrent (legal purposes, I assure you) I messed with a bunch of settings foolishly trying to speed my download speeds. Idk if that would affect it, because I don't even use utorrent anymore.Oh jeez, never MIND. I opened utorrent for the first time in a long time and a long-forgotten torrent from months AGO was hogging the bandwidth. I feel pretty STUPID, sorry for wasting your time.No PROBLEM. Solve : Clean install problem with Windows 7?

Answer»

I'm trying to INSTALL Windows 7 ULTIMATE on a desktop.
I've installed Windows 7 a number of times before for others with no problems. This time it goes through to the pretty blue screen with the bird, (feathered variety) and leafy branch, but the install window doesn't appear. Instead I just get a low resolution mouse arrow and....nothing else.
Does anyone know what to do??It could be the Optical drive...
Swap in another and try.
Also check and see how many RAM sticks are in...if it's over 2G i have seen reports of issues installing although that was mostly with Vista 7 MAY do the same thing...
The EXTRA RAM can simply be added after the install is COMPLETED.

Solve : Logitech Extreme 3D Pro flight stick?

Answer»

I bought a Logitech Extreme 3D pro flight stick today so I can use it on Microsoft's flight simulator X. When I plugged it in to my computer today, it started to install the driver. After about 5 seconds it says that the installation failed and I get an error code of 43. I also tried to install the CD software that came with it first, but the same thing happens. I've tried EVERY port on my computer and I always get the same error, and sometimes saying that it's not recognized. I'm on Windows 7 32 bit.

Thanks. Are they Win7 Drivers ? ?

I hope it helps.

These are the latest. Thank you so much for helping me.What do you mean you "switched a few components"?

BTW, I cleaned up the thread a little and deleted the incorrect logs.Tank you allan. I wanted to delete the post, but didn't know how or if I even could.

What i meant with switching a few components is simply that, the specs i posted, are the ones i have right now.

I uppgrades the computer by first buying the graphic-card, REPLACING the old one because i had the same problem with the old one. But that didn't work, so I thought id buy a new motherboard and power-supply-thingie. And new RAM.

Everything resupplied, uppgraded windows to windows 7, installed all the drivers for the new stuff and installed a few games and boom. Nothing WORKED. Still the same problem as before, blue screen when I played.

I got no clue on what I'm gonna do, if the hardware is faulty or if they don't work well with each other, or if the processor has some problem, or even the hard-drive, cause that's the two peices I haven't replaced... can't really afford it...

I'm gonna try formating my hard-drive today, reinstalling win xp and se how that goes. If another bluescreen pops up, I'll make sure it gets posted.

Regards, RickardHello.

This is getting tiresome!

I've formatted my disks, trying to install win xp again. In the middle of installation, bluescreen appears:

PFN_LIST_CORRUPT

*** STOP: 0x0000004E (0x00000002,0x0002A722,0x000E7FAF,0x00004000)

Anotherone before that appeared, then i disabled onboard LAN in BIOS and this showed up.
It this a Hardware problem? Is something CORRUPT?
I'm thinking:
Motherboard
Processor
Hard-drive

Any of the above?

Regards, RickardAfter that, I Took out one of my RAM memories, and disabled what I thought could be the faulty hard-drive. No luck.

This time:

*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0x0000005,0x00000000,0xF796EB54,0x00000000)

i give up for now.

Solve : Microosoft Installer?

Answer»

Hi Guys

Newbie and hoping someone might be able to throw some light on a problem which is causing some concern.
My operating system is Windows 7 Home Edition 32-bit
Being what can be considered a novice, I don't quite know how to resolve the problem but I suspect that MSI is corrupt. I just don't quite know how to perform any operation in order to confirm whether it is installed or not. Where can I find any details which refer to MSI.

What task can I perform in an effort to check.
Any info required only too happy to forward.

Tks

Hi Allan

The problems which have caused me some problems recently.
1. Updating Skype latest version
2. Updating Real Player Plus latest version

With Skype the update completes and during process of installing the following occurs (as per attachment)
Furthermore I wrote to Skype informing them of the situation and rcvd response with some instructions which have not resolved situation.
Their response below
quote

*For Windows Vista and Windows 7***

3. Tick the BOX next to Run command and click OK > Apply.

4. Go to Start > Run...

5. In the Open box, type msiexec /unreg and click OK.

6. Your Windows Installer box will appear; click OK.

7. When this is complete, go to Start > Run..., type msiexec /regserver in the Open box and click OK.

8. Your Windows Installer box will appear; click OK.

9. When the process is complete, reinstall the update.

***For Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7***
If you are still having problems please try to reinstall and/or update your Windows Installer:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads

Attachment also shows what transpires when carrying out the process msiexec /unreg

unquote

As far as Real Player is concerned the situation is somewhat different but could also involve MSI

I got indication that there was an update and during the process of carrying out procedure, the following occurred
Download was no problem but during installation process it suddenly stopped at 50%. Low and behold everything disappeared.
Real Player icon on desktop was missing, also no indication of program in Programme Files.
I have been in contact with them but unable to resolve problem. I was informed that it might be a registry issue and they might not be able to assist further. I can either contact Microsoft or try to install former version of Realplayer.
Experiencing problems trying to install former version.

Hopefully you are able to get a clearer picture of my predicament.

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]The error says the Windows Installer SERVICE cannot be accessed. Go to Start - Run - and type: services.msc (press ENTER). Check to see if Windows Installer Service is set to either Automatic or Manual. If not, set it to one of those and then START the service. Then try to install something that needs the Windows Installer.

You can also download and install the latest Windows Installer (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/942288)Hi Allan

Unfortunately could not complete your request due to fact that Windows Installer Service not located in the list. I t/4 moved on to site mentioned for downloading the Installer.
Having perused the site I am of the opinion that I should be downloading Windows Installer 5.0 bearing in mind my system is windows 7 Home Edition 32-bit.
Before doing so can you be kind ENOUGH to confirm that is correct? I would hate to know that I have downloaded the incorrect version.

Awaiting
Tks

The fact that you don't have Windows Installer service is a problem. Yes, download and install 5.0Hello Allan

Apologies for being a nuisance but as of now I have not managed to do the installation. Reason is that I am having difficulty understanding certain things as mentioned in the quote/unquote below which I came across

quote

Windows Installer 5 is not available as a standalone version and you can either download Windows 7 SDK Web installer or the Windows 7 SDK ISO file. The advantage of the web installer is you can choose to install any subset of the SDK. It however requires you to be connected to the internet. The ISO file is a complete package and it can even be installed on a computer not connected to the internet

unquote

I get the opinion after reading thru the article that the program at some stage was installed but it is obviously no longer.

If possible can you explain what SDK / ISO mean and perhaps you can provide me with a link for the actual download.

Thanks
Xonkie
To be HONEST, I wasn't aware of that. You know what, let's try sfc /scannow (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833)Performed scan now and result as per attached. Honestly don't know but get the impression result is inconclusive . Don't know how to continue but I am somewhat stuck in understanding exactly how to enter the command syntax mentioned where it says to determine which files could not be repaired by the System File Checker tool, follow these steps.
e.g. findstr /C:''[SR] cannot repair member file'' %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >sfcdetails.txt
Hopefully you understand where I am mean

Solve : Fonts turned small?

Answer»

My fonts suddenly are really SMALL. The only thing that is normal size are the items in the toolbar. Using Windows 7 Home Edition.http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1175-fonts-change.htmlIt toldme to right click and SELECT Personalize, but it isn't showing up.Go to Control panel, display and change your desired appearance.
http://www.techtalkz.com/windows-7/516049-how-change-font-size-icon-size-windows-7-a.htmlI did that and it gave me just one option changing it to 125% but I clicked on it and it TOLD me to re-boot so I did. It increased the sizes on my Toolbar but not on email or facebook. I would like to change it to 100%, not 125%.after it changed my mouse started acting weird..it moves slightly all the time.I went to Control Panel/Fonts and delected to go back to the defaulted font, but I could not click on OK, it was grayed out. I am running Norton right now to see if I have a bug,Here is a suggestion.
Make a new user account.
Log into the new user.
What happens? Any different? If so, suspect your user profile has BECOME corrupted. That is an abnormal behavior and could mean some underlying problem.

Solve : HP m7760n with vista Status : 0xc00000e9?

Answer»

Hi guys I need help I have a HP m7760n with vista the computer was working fine last night I got the message status: 0xc00000e9, I have tried all the suggestions from the internet that is (REPAIR disk recover disk and all other suggestions ) but this computer just refuses to load my vista. So I removed the 2 west digital hard DRIVES and I installed one of the drives to my other computer and tried to format my hard drive through windows but the hard drive was kind of locked. So I thought to use Acronis True Image by wd but it did not work so I had to configure the program to allow me to clone my window 7 drive to this locked wd hard drive I did work after my modifications . so I took my clone hard drive and installed back to my HP m7760n and of course it works just fine .
So now I said let me re INSTALL my vista program that came with my HP computer when I INSERTED the recovery disk into my DVD it loaded the files and then I got the message again Status : 0xc00000e9 my question is as follow how the *censored* this computer refuses my vista program but it works fine with my clone program from my other computer can someone tell me how to fix this HP computer please
i thank you all for trying to help me
please note that i did read all the post on status 0xc00000e9 but no one has try to fix this problem yetAre you saying that you can still use the computer even after getting the 0xc00000e9 message?

From reading you post carefully, it looks like the error is from the DVD drive in your system.

A new external DVD drive is under $50 and much less that taking the laptop to a repair shop. And the eternal DVD drive might have usefulness beyond you present problem,. So I would suggest getting a external DVD drive. If Chou buy it locally, not on-line, you may be able to return it if it does not solve the problem.

Are these 2 physical backup drives for your system? And you want to use another external drive ? A backup drive can be INTERNAL or external. Its just a matter of time for your current backup drive BECOMES full, so you might wanna check on that first.

Solve : Constantly Checking Disk for Consistancy, IE8 freezes compuer, Runs HOT?

Answer»

Hello, I have had trouble off and on since I bought this thing. Please see below for specs:

HP Touchsmart Laptop
AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile RM-72 2.10 GHz
4.0 GB Ram(3.75GB usable)
64-bit Operating System
Pen and Touch Imput
Windows 7 Ultimate(upgraded- not clean install)
Ad-Aware
Java6 update 20
McAfee Security Center
Network Magic(Love it- want to keep)
Spybot

Almost everytime I shutdown completely, when starting up, will always ask to d a disk check... if allowed to count down and attempt the check 1 out of 10 time it Will run check, other times will freeze up and I have to hold power button, the remove power source and battery.... also IE8 always freezes up computer, but otherbrowsers wont... AMD runs hot I know, but this is on a chill mat with fans constantly and gets too hot to touch, all the while fan is running fast trying to cool.... Help is MUCH appreciated... we rely on this thing...It may appear to be freezing however you have to UNDERSTAND Windows creates some pretty large directories...

Let it run overnite...and report backAt which point should I leave it to run overnight? IE freeze or at the disk check freeze? Both are Very easy to get it to do.... And also fairly hard to avoid. Sorry i misunderstood...i was under the impression chkdsk was not completing...

Disregard the above.
Is your Warranty still active ? ? If so i'd be exercising it...Go to START - RUN and type chkdsk /r (then press enter). You'll be asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes. Then reboot and allow checkdisk to run.

Your system is detecting a dirty bit on the HD and is running autocheck. Unfortunately, autocheck does not run with the repair switch (I know it's moronic), so you have to do that manually to fix the error.I was not aware of that little tidbit Allan...Thanx for the heads up !

Why on Earth would MS set it up that way ? ?
Sometimes they manage to befuddle me...I have no idea - it makes absolutely no sense. But it's the reason folks say that checkdisk wants to run on every boot. You can either clear the autocheck by running chkntfs /x (which I RECOMMEND against because it doesn't fix anything) or you can run chkdsk /r "manually".Will try! I'll let u know if it happens again... that is really dumb for them to have done that! And no on the warranty... Just out a few mths ago...Quote from: patio on July 16, 2010, 05:44:54 AM

Why on Earth would MS set it up that way ? ?
Sometimes they manage to befuddle me...

it might be related to the fact that a /r scan of a drive can often take at least 45 minutes to an hour on the average drive. They sort of figured that people would want to use their computers, not watch it scan it's drives!

hairsplitting: the /r, according to the /? help, stands for "recover" (well, it says "scans for and attempts recovery of bad sectors") I'd go with "repair" at least in some sense, but at teh same time /f stands for fix and fixes most other errors relating to everything bad sectors.

Also, chkdsk /f will clear the dirty bit, and won't take a spinsters weekend to complete. by default a boot time autochk is passed the /f switch.

Lastly, you can query the dirty bit of a drive using fsutil:
Code: [Select]fsutil dirty query C:

you can set it, as well. but not unset- only chkdsk can turn off the dirty bit. (well, and of course disk editors and other utilities)OK, still having trouble with this. I hve just been dealing with it because it does not do this constantly... I have tried the ms CONFIG and the commands you said to type... but nothing happens. literally. It does not do anything and when I restart I am prompted for a diskcheck again...
Sorry for not being able to get on this sooner, but this past year has been aweful and i have not had the time to mess with it. Now i have to, because i need this computer for school. Thnk you for anything you think might help!!!!I havegone over and over these steps again and again.... I type in the run box:

chkdsk /f
chkdsk /r
chkdsk volume:/r

the only thing that happens is a FLASH of the black box you would expect to see and then it is gone, back to the screen you were working on, in this case this webpage. Any more suggestions to correct this?? I still have the diskcheck screen everytime I startup. Sometimes it allows bypass by hitting a button, and most times I have to force shutdown and try again and again to get it to bypass... it will get stuck on the black screen sayng to hit any button to STOP diskcheck, stuck on 1 second remaining, and the light showing the disk/computer is working(that blinks on and off during opperation) blinks every second on the second, and will not let me past that screen without forced shutdown.

Not sure what you MEAN here about what contents, but have you tried going to IE Tools, Internet options?
You could also try using another browser to check on the display or content problem.
I'm with jason2074. From your post i have no idea what you mean or what you are trying to do.

Can you be more specific and exact in your question ?Since I made this post I've tried a couple of different things and the box now no longer appears. I was going to try and get a screen shot of it to show you but I tried all the usual sites where it appears and NOTHING. One thing I did do is reset IE to default settings. It's funny, this has been happening for about a month and I've gotten so sick and tired of closing that box all the time and when I finally post about it, it's not a problem anymore. If It starts happening again I'll post of screen shot. THANKS for the replies though.

Just FIX all the hardware errors or remove the devices.

All devices, when active, impose upon the CPU resources to some degree. Any device not working well may impose an excessive burden ob the system, CAUSING other things to work poorly.

Solve : Automate deletion of duplicate and original line from csv?

Answer»

I am completely new to scripting but have been assigned the tasks of creating several batch files to manipulate data. My final task requires me to find lines that have certain duplicates present then delete not only the duplicate but the original as well and strip out the quotes at the same time as shown in the sample below:

"180222","1","8.5","1Z0E947355363450","9.49","UPAC","N"
"180223","1","7.3","1Z0E947357325461","6.53","UPAC","N"
"180225","1","3.9","1Z0E947355178080","4.77","UPAC","N"
"180223","1","7.3","1Z0E947357325461","6.53","UPAC","N"
"180222","1","8.5","1Z0E947355363450","9.49","UPAC","Y"

What needs to occur is when a line contains "Y" then that line and the original line (first line in this case) will need to be deleted. Lines 2 and 4 will remain because "Y" is not present. This information will then be put into a different file while preserving the original file. After the quotes are stripped the file will look as follows:

180223,1,7.3,1Z0E947E0357325461,6.53,UPAC,N
180225,1,7.3,1Z0E947E0355178080,9.49,UPAC,N
180223,1,7.3,1Z0E947E0357325461,6.53,UPAC,N

I know I am asking for quite a lot but any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.The problem is not too hard. But not so easy either.
Batch files, by nature, do not readily handle Coma Seperated Values format, or CSV. That is more easily don in Excel or a similar spreadsheet program.

Do you have the KILLS to do this, at LEST in part, in some other program? Do you know VBA? Or anything like hat?

A piratical solution is to make a hybrid. Part in 'batch' and part in a SCRIPT you already know.

Of COURSE, if needed, it can all be done in Batch. It is not very elegant.

The FOR statement can read lines from a text file ans separate the items in local variables that are used inside a block of a FOR construct.

Sorry I can not able to write such code, but just wait a bit, somebody ELSE can help you. The only way I could do this is by breaking in up into modules and or do some of the script in a general purpose programming language.
Thank you for responding Geek-9pm. Unfortunately, I do not have the skills for VBA and not sure how to automate this in Excel. I will look into it though. I do need to make a correction, however, to the expected output. Thanks again.

In the UNLIKELY event your drive is affected and you cannot access your data, the data still resides on the drive and there is no data loss associated with this issue. Seagate is working with customers to expedite a remedy.
This was not an isolated case, as the PR damage control above WOULD have you believe.
These are now past issues and do not represent the current sate of any of the hard drive OEMs. The problem was not foreseen by either Seagate or Western Digital. The firmware issue was not a mere error is the code, it was a fundamental design flaw. The products were not suitable for the mass market. In fact the firmware problem of Seagate and the firmware of WD were very different at the code level. It was how the users would use the drives, whether as external, internal USB or SATA. Blaming it on a chip maker was a straw man .

Computer world is regarded as a pro-industry rag, which I read. Still about the Seagate thing, it went much further.

Complaints flood Seagate over hard drive problems
Seagate offers free firmware upgrade
By Lucas Mearian
Computerworld - Seagate Technology LLC's online support forum has been riddled this week with complaints from owners of the high-capacity Barracuda 7200.11 hard drive, which in recent months had already drawn some complaints that the drive has been freezing up during data transfers or failing all together.

The Barracuda 7200.11 is the eleventh generation of Seagate's flagship drive for desktop PCs and comes in capacities ranging from 160GB to 1.5TB. Complaints have not been limited to Seagate's online support site. They have also weighed in on other forums. The complaints involve drives running Linux, Mac OS X and Windows Vista.

The company said in a statement Friday that indeed a problem has caused some drives to fail and, it said it isolated the issue to a firmware bug affecting not only the 7200.11 but several other models manufactured through December 2008. Those include the DiamondMax 22, the Barracuda ES.2 SATA and the SV35.

Seagate is offering a firmware upgrade that it says will fix the issue.

Western Digital also released a firmware fix for drives in its 'Green' line. When you understand that it was not a failing chip and not a bug in the software, you grasp the big picture. They do not really test they products on Personal computers.
Yes, the problem was with the 'Green' drives. And not the same problem as Seagate. Let me repeat, it was no a mechanical thing, not in the start. In both the case of Seagate and Western Digital they underestimated what trousers do with the drives. Whether internal or external.

The Pcgameshardware web site is pro-hardware and would bad mouth a company only if it did something bad.

Hard drives: Western Digital also got problems
There is a new firmware for Western Digital's Green Power hard drives that is supposed to solve problems related to the combination of energy saving mode and certain programs.

Western Digital's hard drives of the Green Power series have a feature similar to hard drives of notebooks. The Read/Write heads are run on energy saving mode if there hasn't been an activity for about eight seconds.

But certain applications like Speedfan or several Linux distributions access the hard drive in regular patterns - sometimes in a 10 seconds rhythm - and thus unnecessarily use the hard drive. A possible option to work around the problem would be not to use such software, but this definitely ins't practical.

Therefore Western Digital developed a new firmware for the models WD1000FYPS-01ZKB0, WD7500AYPS-01ZKB0 and WD7501AYPS-01ZKB0 that extends the timeframe from eight seconds up to five minutes. Alternatively the saving feature can be deactivated. Western Digital provides the required tool. As Silentpcreview reports the affected hard drives can be recognized by a high "load/unload cycle” via SMART. Some Green Power hard drives are supposed to have exceeded their specified 300,000 cycles in less than a year.

Western Digital frmware fix
WD and Seagate take steps to fix terabyte drives
Submitted by Devon Cooke on Thu, 2009-01-22 15:13.
Reaching the terabyte mark was an important symbolic step for hard drive makers — a way of saying, "Our drives are so big, we need a new word to describe how big they are!" But that was two years ago, and, as the drives have aged, some problems have come to light. Both Seagate and Western Digital are in the midst of dealing with unexpected problems in their terabyte drives. And both have now commented publicly on the problems. And, happily, both have offered fixes for their respective problems.

Wait, did I forget the Tom's Hardware post? Oh, it really was a firmware failure. But it did not help their PR any.

In the wake of freezing issues with Seagate's 1.5TB drives comes yet another problem with the Barracuda 7200.11 series. Failure rates of the 1TB drives in particular are abnormally high, but Seagate has not acknowledged the problem.

Now 11 pages long, the "official" problem discussion thread on the Seagate support forums is full of users reporting problems with the ST31000340AS, the 1TB Barracuda 7200.11 drive.

One user built a 6TB RAID array three months ago. In two months, one of the drives failed. A second drive failed about a month later, and a third eight days after that. Another user had four out of five of their drives fail within 12 days of purchase. Reports of failures can also be found on other forums as well. Some data recovery and RMA centers have reported failure rates of approximately 30 to 40 percent, but Seagate has not released any official information.

The issue lies with faulty microcode in firmware version SD15, found on drives manufactured in Thailand. Generally, the drive will operate normally until the time of failure and at some point will lock up and prevent detection by the BIOS, rendering it completely unusable.

While Seagate has not publicly acknowledged the problem as of yet, they have reportedly updated the firmware on all newly manufactured drives, however the firmware cannot be update on drives that have already failed because the BIOS does not even detect them. This means that owners of affected drives require data recovery services to save their critical data.

No recall on unsold drives with the affected firmware has been issued.

Update: Seagate has acknowledged the problem and is providing firmware updates through customer support. Additionally, if your hard drive has already failed, Seagate will provide free data recovery services, since the data is not actually affected.

Here is another user gripe about WD and the firmware update.

Caviar Green 1.5TB drives - problem with new firmware
12-08-2009 03:39 PM - last edited on 12-08-2009 03:43 PM
Synology support the WD15EADS FW rev 00R6B0. They do not support the same drive with rev 00P8B0. Sadly the only FW version available in the UK at present. What is the likelihood of a FW update to fix the issue? Just bought two that I thought were supported drives (I checked) but since they arrived they have been spurned by Synology and exhibit the very problems they describe. . .
That, of course, does not count. Even if 1,000 users complain, but the OEM says almost nothing, the OEM is always right! Besides, that user is in the UK. They always complain.

Can I go to now? It is 9:50 PM here I I want to watch 'House' on the telly. It comes on a 10. CUL.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 08, 2011, 10:48:41 PM
At this point, BC, the original issue of the OP was..err..I forgot now. What was the original issue?
The original issue was unrelated to the hard drive.

Quote
The problem the OP had will continue to be a problem till the issue is clearly understood. Did he find a solution?
The problem was the motherboard.

Unless the moderator stops this, I will start this with one authoritative statement which is really PR damage control. Bear with me. It is from Seagate. Western Digital later.
That addresses a problem in a upgrade version of firmware that was released on the site. That is, drives didn't come with that firmware, you had to manually upgrade to it. Additionally, they don't mention any specifics as to the problem.

Quote
This was not an isolated case, as the PR damage control above would have you believe.
What makes you think this? A few forum posts?

Quote
These are now past issues and do not represent the current sate of any of the hard drive OEMs.
So why bring it up? What was the point of that exercise?

Quote
The problem was not foreseen by either Seagate or Western Digital.
The quote refers to Seagate, you have yet to provide anything about WD.

Quote
The firmware issue was not a mere error is the code, it was a fundamental design flaw.
How do you know this? Did you fix it yourself, or are you making assumptions? That link doesn't even provide any specifics as to the possible symptoms.

Quote
The products were not suitable for the mass market.
The firmware wasn't- firmware which was only available by downloading from their site. At least, if I'm supposed to read the quote. Even if, for the sake of argument we say it was in the drives that came from the factory, there are a few things:
-It's a seagate drive. Again, not sure how this extends to WD, nor how it reaches 2 and a half years into the future with unrelated models.
-The effect? the drive would brick itself during hardware detection. A problem? Of course it was. However, you seem to take this a step further. Instead of THINKING "well, golly, I see you have a 7200.11 barracuda drive, and it doesn't appear at boot up, I suspect it might be this firmware issue I read about" you go

OMG... chkdsk takes 2 seconds longer when the hour hand is between numbers! It's a massive conspiracy! WHAT? your partitions keep messing up? MUST BE FIRMWARE ISSUES! You can't copy data to a write-protected floppy... oh... and you're using a seagate drive, there is your problem! Or in this case, "I see you are having issues seeing any devices at boot... OMG... you have a WD drive, there is your problem" as if that is a legitimate means of diagnosis.

Quote
In fact the firmware problem of Seagate and the firmware of WD were very different at the code level.
YOU BLEW MY MIND.

different manufacturers use different firmware? So is this your citation for WD? "they use different code than seagate but they still have the same problem?" Because that's pretty weak.

Quote
Blaming it on a chip maker was a straw man .
And being able to update the chipset driver and resolve the problem-

welll that was simply black magic!

Quote
Computer world is regarded as a pro-industry rag, which I read. Still about the Seagate thing, it went much further.
And you proceed to quote a PCWorld article, which basically redescribes the same thing. They claim it was part of the firmware on the drives as they came, but I think that may be journalistic imbellishment, as you are wont to find in a PC Magazine. Either way, they are rather specific that the drives were all "models manufactured through December 2008", Looking at the calendar, I see the date is May 2011. I suppose I can quote things about the FDIV bug and say Intel is unreliable too?

Quote
Western Digital also released a firmware fix for drives in its 'Green' line.
Yes, the GREEN line. a fact you never ask Original Posters about. you see WD and your eyes set fire and you go "OMG I KNOW THE PROBLEM! IT IS THE DRIVE!" regardless of whether the user is actually having issues with their hard drive or is just trying to download some attachments. It's never a WD Green drive, Just as when they say it's seagate you don't care if they have a Baracuda 7200.11 that was manufacturered before December 2008.

When you understand that it was not a failing chip and not a bug in the software, you grasp the big picture.
The big picture is: Companies and people are fallible. Well hot *censored* that is a huge revelation there, professor! Any other nuggets of wisdom you care to share with us? Perhaps that dogs and cats have four legs, flies have compound eyes, or computer memory comes in a stick format? Secondly, it WAS a bug in the software, because firmware is software, but I suppose that would be splitting hairs. Either way, these are problems, as you have said yourself that have passed. Do you somehow think that because those two companies have had some firmware issues in the past they are somehow more likely to have more in the future then other HD manufacturers? Do you also firmly believe that because Intel had the FDIV microcode issue in their Original Pentiums that any excel spreadsheets created on Intel processors should be double-checked by a mathematician?

Quote
They do not really test they products on Personal computers.
If the issues are sporadic and rare, there is a possibility that the problem can slip through the cracks. You can't read that there was a firmware issue on a few drives three years ago and suddenly conclude that any and all products made by that manufacturer aren't tested on the very PCs that they are designed for. That's a ludicrous and overbearing assumption.

Quote
Yes, the problem was with the 'Green' drives.

I pointed this out. Again, and I repeat, this is how people threads often go if they make the "mistake" of mentioning their drive is Seagate or WD.

OP: Hi, I'm having a problem, I can't seem to see any of my drives when I boot up"

Mr.Conspiracy: Are you using a WD hard-drive"

OP: yes

Mr. Conspiracy: Even though the problem to which I refer was something prevalent three years ago and with a sub-type of the brand you use that I can't be bothered to confirm you have, and even though the symptoms where you don't see the Optical drive either are wholly unrelated to the issue to which I refer, I think you should use another brand and see if that fixes the issue.

Quote
In both the case of Seagate and Western Digital they underestimated what trousers do with the drives. Whether internal or external.

So wait... they didn't expect users to boot up? It is a rare issue that occurs when the drive is first powered on. I see that as an oversight, but hardly underestimating what people do with drives, particularly since power up the drives is almost certainly something they would expect users to do at some point.

Similar articles can be found in other forums.

And I'm sure there can be posts found about people who think that their Intel chips are posessed by a dark wizard named agememnon who eats goats and makes macaroni pictures, that hardly means it has a factual basis, it just means those people are delusional.

Let me sum this up. I really don't give a flying crap what you believe. Really I don't. I already know you believe all sorts of conspirational nonsense that would make a 9/11 "truther" blush. My "problem" is that you are using these 3 year old citations as somehow proof that Seagate and WD drives have a rate of failure that is statistically higher than other brands. That's what I was asking for, so I assume that is what you are providing. Knowing you though I wouldn't have been surprised if your evidence consisted of a souffle recipe and a laundry list. In any case, All this confirms is that you base that entirely on two instances where there were firmware issues with said drive. This is the equivalent of the following:

Quote
OP: Hi, for some reason all my excel formulas are wrong, any help?

Poster: can you post the formulas you are using?

Conspirational crazy person: Are you using an Intel chip? Did you know that over 20 years ago there was a problem with one of their chips microcode that caused it to do math wrong? It was called the FDIV bug! Somehow this bug from 20 years ago translates into the cause of the problem on your i5 system! Apparently whenever a company has an issue with a single line of their products we must generalize that problem and make assumptions whenever that brand is mentioned!
I give up. I plead guilty as charged.
To finish this thread with some redeeming value, here is a 2007 report, which many have already read.
