Solve : No e-mail from AOL?

Answer»

Hi -
I have 2 friends who use AOL. I use Verizon. For some reason they can not SEND me e-mail. They get a message that the e-mail is undeliverable. Is there anything I or they can do so that the e-mails will go through? Thanks BobWhat e=mail app do you use. ? ?
What filters are set in the app ? ?
Are you running a firewall app ? ?

If NONE of these CHECKS WORK contact your ISP.Patio -
I hope I can answer your questions. I use Vista Home Basic and Yahoo mail classic. I am not AWARE that there is any filters I can set in the e-mail app. How do I do that? I use Windows Firewall and in the settings under the general tab the recommended is on.
I hope this answers your questions. Thanks BobPatio -
I found the place where the mail filters are. It indicated that there were no filters being used. I don't know how to set any filters as the items asked meant nothing to me. I notice that a new version of mail is being offered. Maybe I should go to that. Do you think that would help? Thanks for your time. Bob You and your friends could try one of the free email programs like gmail and see what happens.

Almost always when an email doesn't go through it's got the wrong address. Sometimes it's something simple like using .com instead of .net.rthompson80819 -
Thanks for your reply. I think your suggestion is correct. I checked other friends that use AOL and found they have no problem. Therefore one must conclude that the two people that have a problem are doing something wrong. Sometimes the simplest answer is the best answer. I am checking this problem solved. Thanks Bob

Solve : Strangely I can't delete a folder and its file.?

Answer» SINCE I started to run Win 7 (Ultimate) on my PC, the following happaned for the first time:

I downloaded a free application (a DOS utility) that come to me zipped. I extracted the zip file in my "My Videos" folder.
I CHOSE this folder as being empty. The extraction process created subfolders there, each containing files. Next I included the extracted files as well as other files for creating of an image file (ISO) . I burned a bootable to DOS CD. Up to that point everything was OK - my boot CD and all included apps do work.
The problems strangely appeared when I returned back to the folder I used for extraction ("My Videos"), I wanted to delete the extracted source directories/files:

1. I started with deletion of the main directory (it contained all source subfolders and their files). The deletion has taken several seconds and passed without warning message.

2. After completion of the "delete" command I saw that one of the subfolders has left not deleted and it contains one of its original files:
- My Videos .................... ( system folder)
- Sample Videos ....(sub folder)
- Fdisk121..............(sub folder left after deletion, can't be deleted!)
- FDISK.LSM .... ( file of Fdisk121 folder. This file also can't be deleted!)

Really I discovered the sub folder Fdisk121 and its file FDISK.LSM left in their location after having cleared my "Recycle bin". I deleted what it contained because I assumed there was nothing important. (May be that was a mistake! If I could do a restore of the deleted files and folders I would do deletion again - starting first with files, then folders, as in DOS old times!?).

4. When I tray to delete either Fdisk121 sub folder or its FDISK.LSM file the following happens:

- at deletion of Fdisk121 folder : a pop window "Recycling" comes up Saying - saying "Recycling....", but nothing more happans - no deletion, no freezing, no additional messages, etc. I can close this window and continue to work. "Recycling...." can stay endlessly (I did not wait more than 5 min)
- at deletion of FDISK.LSM file : a pop up window "Preparing to recycle"comes up saying "Calculating...." and nothing more happans - no deletion, no freezing, no additional messages, etc. I can close this window and continue to work. "Calculating...." stays as long as "Recycling...."
- In each of the above processes I stared the Windows Task Manager to see what process was running: no process was engaged the CPU.

5. I tried to run FDISK.LSM file and ......it starts my ArchiCAD 10 application !!! Very strangely, isn't it?
ArchiCAD says "Can't open .LSM format file" and opens a new one. After CLOSING this application I noticed that if I click the "Computer" icon, the 'Windows Explorer" runs slowly and strangely (icons in the left pane are blinking and the address bar goes green). After nearly 15 min the Explorer is OK.

6. My antivirus app MS Security Essentials says there is no infection.

7. CCleaner Registry TOOL does not discover any registry issues.

As I use Win 7 since the last 2 months and I haven't enough experience, I don't understand what the problem is, what is its origin and how to solve it.
I will appreciate any advise or help.

Chris
I assume file still can't be deleted after a reboot of the pc?

Try using the unlocker software. This will unlock the file (if it is being used by some process and hence can't be deleted) and then you can re-attempt deletion of said file.

Good Luck2x3i5x,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, after REBOOTING the problem (impossible deletion) still exists.
Difficulties appeared only after trying to delete.

I'll try to do that once again following your advise,
first I have understand what the "locked files"are.

I wonder that Win 7 hasn't a built in unlocking tool !

Chrishave you tired deleting it in dos? not sure really how 7 works but sure you have to open command prompt as admin still to do this. once you have command prompt open as admin then just get to the file and type DEL filename /F /Q F being delete even if it is read only and q to to skip the confirm step. @2x3i5x

Hi, Unlocker 1.0.0.9 did its job in my case.
Thanks once again, regards.

@MrNeedHelp

Good idea! Your post came after I've had the success
with Unlocker app. and now I by default assume I have not any locked file
on my PC (in fact it's impossible to check all files/directories).
But your advise to use CMD is reasonable as Win 7 emulates DOS that can read
long file names!! See the following picture:

I used this method years ago when I was running Win NT 4.0 and often
had locked files. Nowadays I simply forgot DOS and CMD prompt of Win 7, but I
should not!!

@2x3i5x and @MrNeedHelp

Now, having the problem solved and 2 tools (Unlocker app and CMD) in hand,
I'm still thinking on the reason that caused it.

Thank you very much to both of you!
Chris

glad you solved your problem.

Did unlocker app tell you what process was preventing you from deleting the file (I am assuming that was the case for you.)?

For me, I rather use software if possible, instead of having to remember CMD command, but whatever works, I suppose @2x3i5x

Hi,

When I started Unlocker and selected the folder for deletion, Unlocker gave 3 processes involved.
I can't now quot exactly those, but remember that all of them read ".....explorer.exe" as a part of the
process' name. When the folder' file was selected, Unlocker gave 2 processes involved, also containing
explorer.exe in names. That made me a bit afraid and suspicious, but ....I hit the button to unlock anyway!

best,
ChrisHi, have you tried using http://*SPAM*? I have encountered the same problem too. and http://*SPAM* helped me. They can handle pathnames of any length, up to the internal Windows limit of 32,000 characters and it works on any Windows version (NT/2000/XP/Vista/Windows 7). You gotta try it.

You are using Vista on a laptop. Which laptop and how old is it?
Have you tied Thise?
1 Remove the battery with no AC.
2. Wait three minuestes.
3. Plug into MAIN POWER, but no battery.
4. Restart nthe computer.
Try booting to the Windows cd and running the startup repair options.Geek 9pm I tried tha but got the same results .
Allan I tried tha too but got the same results .

The reason why i was trying too fix it instead of doing a factory recovery is because my client
haves quickbooks and she doesn't have the disk too installed it again .But after talking to him
about the situation he agree on doing a factory recovery.
So now im doing the UPDATES and here soon about to installed MSE and removed norton

Its a Toshiba Satellite L3oo series Quote

Good for you!
If the data is important, the user has to you pay to protect it. Trying to recover important data without the right tools is very risky.
Hopefully your client will consider a backup plan suitable for quickbooks. There is a lot of information about how and why one must have a quickbooks backup plan. There is even online backup offered by different firms targeted to quickbooks users. Of course you already the official site is http://intuit.com and they have an 800 number.

Solve : Difference between 64bit & 32bit??

Answer»

What is the difference between a 32bit program and 64bit program? Which of them should I use? *sorry for my english.Based on the admittedly small SAMPLE so far provided, your English seems excellent. I think the answer you are seeking is probably something like this: 64 bit Windows programs are written to use the features of 64 bit PROCESSORS, WHEREAS 32 bit programs will only run on 32 bit processors.

I don't think there is any point in making this reply a complete description of 32 and 64 bit CPUs and programming for them, so I provide some of links below.

That'll teach me to be a wise guy! And to read my posts more carefully before clicking "Post".

A 32 bit program will run in:

a 32 bit operating system (which will run on a 32 or a 64 bit PROCESSOR)
a 64 bit operating system (which will only run on a 64 bit processor)

A 64 bit program will only run in:

a 64 bit operating system (which will only run on a 64 bit processor)

I think I've got that right?
Glad you got it right. Must bookmark this!

And in the future please use a more descriptive subject for your post. Thanks. Some punctuation would help too. LACKING details, the link below would only be a wild guess:

Internet goes out when viewing videos on you tube

As you are using a Windows 7 64-bit version you need as Flash player compatible with 64 bit operating system. You tube needs compatible flash player to play videos.

You have TWO versions of Internet Explorer 8 (IE8), IE8 64-bit and IE8 32-bit. IE8 64-bit is the default.
There isn't a 64-bit version of Flash Player (at least not yet). While IE8 64-bit is your default browser, Flash content should open in IE8 32-bit. If you know a page has Flash content (or is dependent on one or more ActiveX Controls), open an instance of IE8 32-bit to access the page.
That's probably NOT a function of Windows 7, but more a function of the browser you're using.

I use only Mozilla Firefox. I.E. is notorious for being a huge security risk.

After installing Firefox for one of my customers, I also install the latest version of both Flash Player and Shockwave.
They greatly enhance the browsing experience. If using Firefox, make sure you set it allow Active-X and Java.

Then to make Windows Media Player work for a greater number of file types, I install the latest version of the "K-Lite Codec PACK", for whatever version of Windows I'm dealing with. They are different for XP, Vista and Win-7.
I carry all three on my Utilities flash drive.

It also doesn't hurt to have the latest version of the "Java" run-time installed.

These things are just a few, of the PROGRAMS that greatly enhance the Windows experience.

Cheers mate!
Thanks shadow Ill try that

Thanks for your reply but it did not work. However on the page that came up was an address that gave help. I chatted with a Yahoo person who said they could not answer my question but they gave me a phone number for Verizon. After holding for a long time and GETTING a person her answer was "you can not go back to Yahoo Mail Classic". She indicated that a lot of people wanted to go back but Yahoo Mail Beta was so much better that EVERYBODY should use it. I don't agree but I have no CHOICE unless I go to another mail service which I don't want to do. Thanks again for your time. BobThere's no point in going back since they've announced everyone is moving to the new version by the end of the MONTH, anyway.

Solve : Bios failure! Please help.?

Answer»

I was using WINDOWS Vista Home Premium on Acer Aspire 5315. It was just out of curiosity that I went to the manufacturer website and downloaded its BIOS update and tried to update it. On the way however the laptop stacked for so long time that I tried to shut it down by pressing and hold the power button but it didn't shut down;later I removed the battery. When I started it again it didn't start and EVEN the power connectivity lights are off when connected to power.
I have tried all I can but since the screen doesn't communicate I have ended up in vain. Frankly speaking, I am very worried and I don't know what to do. Please anyone with any idea, I will be glad for your help.
Thanks in advance! You may have just created an expensive paperweight by flashing the BIOS and/or INTERRUPTING the process...
I'm afraid a trip to an authorised Service Center might be your only option...
Why did you need to flash the BIOS ? ?Quote from: PATIO on June 15, 2011, 08:48:48 AM

Why did you need to flash the BIOS?

Quote from: The OP
It was just out of curiosity

It's not just cats that are killed by curiosity, it seems.Well, it's obviously too late for the OP, but for the curious reader of this forum.....
Unless there is a VERY GOOD reason to flash your bios, , , DON'T.

Motherboard makers have a different BIOS for every model of mobo that they make. Each one is VERY specific to a particular Mobo and none other. Flashing a bios chip with the wrong code, will usually render it inoperable (DEAD)

Some bios chips have a backup copy of the original code.
Remove all power from the system (take out all batteries in a laptop) and remove the CMOS battery for at least 30 minutes.
Then replace the cmos battery, restore the power and try to boot up the PC. This may or may not work, but it's worth a try.

Good Luck Mate!

Solve : my computer is very sluggish/slow after reformat?

hey so my computer did a random reboot all of a sudden when i was trying to open Rift

but it didnt open the computer like it used to it went to a windows 7 automatet repair screen, and then it said that the automatet

repair failed, and i got a list with options on how to continue from there, i tried the repair a couple of times but it failed.

Then i tried system restore, and it said it was succesful and it rebooted again but it came right back to

the same screen, so i just gave up and reinstalled windows 7 and lost all my data.

I dont really mind that, but now my computer runs really slow and sluggish it takes 40 seconds or longer to reboot it from when i press

the restart button till it is shutting down, and it takes nearly 2 mins to start up again,

the error codes i got was 0x0, 0x4 and 0x490 and that ci.dll was corrupt, ofcause this means nothing to me.

Solve : left shift key minimizes programs?

Answer»

the left shift key on my keyboard is now acting like alt+shift when pressed. It minimizes the current program and will switch to whatever else is running. I am still able to use my right shift key. Any help is appreciated. Two or three things to try.
Another keyboard.
Switch User.
Boot in safe MODE.
...
Don't use two resident AV programs
So you have a AV program installed? Which?
Who is your service provider?
...
Don't use their AV program.I had AVG installed prior to this, but just installed EMSISOFT to see if AVG wasn't picking everything up. So now I have two AV programs. When using another user the same thing happened.

I tried it in safe mode and still, the same thing. I ran AVG for a virus scan while in safe mode, but NOTHING came up.It may be that the keyboard is DIRTY.
You should understand that disassemble of the keyboard is not suggested for users who have not be entrained.
This article, I thin k, is reasonable and conservative. It recommends rubbing alcohol and air under low pressure.
http://www.helpwithpcs.com/maintenance/cleaning-keyboard.htm

Also, there are a number of videos on You Tube about cleaning your keyboard.
It can't be that. My keyboard is in good condition. It's only about a month old.

The strange thing is when I unplug the keyboard and PLUG it back in, the keyboard will function properly for several seconds before returning to how it is now. Do you think my keyboard has been re-mapped? If so, how can I fix this? What happens in safe mode?Quote from: Allan on June 19, 2011, 12:30:41 PM

What happens in safe mode?

pressing the shift key causes the current program to minimize and switch to another program. Then the problem is with your keyboard.

Solve : Upgrade to Vista from XP causes problems with my disability solutions.?

Answer»

Hello,
I have long-standing problems with things like interface changes - particularly when they involve visual aspects. I have a MODERATE case of Asperger's Syndrome compounded by severe visual problems (Keratoconus, light and colour over-sensitivity, extreme myopia and astigmatism). Late last year i Killed my Motherboard and had to change to a new computer which came pre-installed with Vista. An attempt to revert the new machine to XP failed spectacularly and the only solution was to move up to Vista.

I need someone who understand the interface between Vista and the internet better than I do as I am not finding what I need to know by searching on-line, even in the Microsoft and Firefox forums.

As an example of just ONE of my problems.

I use Notepad windows all the time while I am working. Yesterday I had 13 of these files open at one time! I have the screen set to display pale aqua text on a dark purple background, which is what is most comfortable for my eyesight on screen. In XP, if I printed one of these files, it printed as black text on a white background. Now, in Vista, my B&W PRINTER (Brother Laser Printer HL-2040) tries to emulate these colours, resulting in a very dark grey background, with barely paler grey text: this is both illegible; and highly wasteful of toner!

I HAVE developed a kludgey and very time consuming work-around (closing the open file, reopening it in SWwriter, spending time adjusting the page format so it prints the way it would have in notepad, printing it, then going back to notepad for more edits etc.) but this really isn't a satisfactory solution for the long term.

All I want to do is to be able to print as I did before (on demand and in B&W!) surely it should not be so hard?

My Computer SPECIFICATIONS are:

Operating System - MS Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit SP1
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 @ 1.86GHz
RAM - 2.0GB DDR2

My primary productive Software Programs are:

Browser: Firefox 3.6.17
Email 1: Mailwasher (used for screening email only)
Email 2: Eudora (used for writing and sending email)
Office Software: Open Office 3.0
Photography: Kodak Easyshare, Picasa, Faststone Photo Resizer.

I also have a legacy DOS database program (Professional File) that mostly works OK (when using Tame to control some of DOS's more noxious behaviour) although, again, I am having printer issues, but that is a topic for a whole different thread.

Overall, I am getting more and more worried about the arbitrary changes which seem to be happening as software is updated. First it was Windows (I have been thoroughly warned away from Windows 7) and now it looks as if Firefox is going the same way as FF4 appears to be a disaster from my point of view. I REALLY cannot cope with constant interface changes, but I worry about security holes in out-of date programs and would like to access any improvements available in speed and memory handling as they become available.

My current custom scheme for the Windows (Standard Theme) is as follows:

Part One: Set by right clicking on the Desktop and selecting Personalise; then choose Window Colour and Appearance

Make sure that "Use Windows Colours" is Unchecked, then choose the "Accessibility" button and Check ONLY "Ignore colors" and
"Ignore font styles" - leave "Ignore font sizes" UNCHECKED!

THIS part 2 is what I think causes a lot of my problems, However; this is also the THING I really need to have - the visual disability OPTIONS that I have been able to find all seem to be about increasing contrast - whereas what I am trying to do is reduce the contrast between background and foreground and differentiate the two by means of colour only. I am hypersensitive to ANY really bright colours on screen, especially white, yellow, and red; which I try to avoid completely where possible. I also cannot cope with things like the Aero style "3D" themes. I am attaching a screen shot of my current scheme.

I am hoping for a two - part solution: Firstly, someone who can help me with my Printing issue, and then, later on any people who can guide me in fixing all of the other issues which this change of operating system has caused.

Yours Sincerely,

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]My problem is similar. My machines have both Vista and Windows 7, but I use Windows XP more often because of my visual disability it is just to hard to change things.

Here is something you may want to try, it you have a friend that will help you. There is a Virtual Machine that can run Windows XP inside of Vista. It is a bit slow, but not too bad. That way you can use your old settings. But you need a legal copy of XP. I think.Great! Now there are two of us!

I'm afraid that my "legal copy of XP" went to God along with the machine I fried back in October. I would REALLY like to progress with my computer capabilities, but as you state it is very difficult!

Thanks for the suggestion though.

Solve : Blue tint everywhere?

Answer»

So yesterday I had a problem with the blue TINT showing up on most lettering and white backgrounds on my computer (A Toshiba Satellite A505D laptop) but before I could figure out how to fix it, it ended up fixing itself.
A couple of hours ago, when I started my computer again, the blue tint appeared again but this TIME it's not leaving no matter what I try.

This is an example of what it looks like:

Okay, i checked that picture with my phone and apparently i can't printscreen to show you my problem but i promise you the blue tint is there.

I've searched for an answer across the web but all the remedies that's been given doesn't seem to work.

I've tried:

  • checking the power cord and making sure everything is connected
  • restarting the computer
  • changing the resolution
  • restoring to a previous timepoint
  • checking for a virus

None of these helped. I hope someone can help me out. Everything functions normally but the blue tint is extremely annoying.
Also I'm not too well-versed on computer mechanics and the lingo so if you do explain, please dumb it down?Does it come and go if you tilt the screen BACKWARDS and forwards?

No, it's just a clear aqua blue.

Here, I took a picture with my phone since printscreening it doesn't work:
1. When you start up the laptop, during the "DOS" screen where you see messages about memory check, etc, are the white characters bluish?
2. If you connect an external monitor to the VGA port on the laptop, is the display bluish on that also?
3. Has this laptop, to your knowledge been dropped or roughly handled or overheated recently?
4. What do you mean by this:

Quote from: DZee
apparently i can't printscreen to show you my problem

Do you mean a screen grab just looks normal (no blue tint?)

Please answer the above questions.

1. Yes, the letters themselves aren't blue but the background has the blue tint that's not supposed to be there.
2. I don't have any other monitor to test on so I can't test this, unfortunately.
3. No, I always store it in the same place and clean it frequently.
4. Yeah, when I checked the photo that I screen grabbed (printscreen whatever lol), it was completely normal (no hint of blue) compared to the picture I manually took with my phone (the picture above). From your answers I very much think that you have a hardware problem. Connecting an external monitor would have told us whether the problem lies in the screen or on the motherboard. In a way this does not matter because you need to take this laptop to a repair company.

Yeah, I wish I had another monitor to test out on but oh well.
Thanks for trying to help me.
I'll take it to a repair shop on Monday and see what the problem is and report back in CASE someone has the same problem in the future.DZee -
I am not an expert BUT I may cast some light on your problem. I had an E Machine monitor which got an orange tint not blue. I took the monitor to a FRIENDS house and plugged it into his computer and it stayed orange. This proved the monitor was at fault not my computer. Apparently what controls the color balance went bad. I bought a new monitor and the problem was fixed.
Hope this helps. BobQuote from: Bobh on June 12, 2011, 06:52:54 AM
I bought a new monitor and the problem was fixed.

This is a laptop. We already went over the trying an external monitor thing.

That just proves that only experts should reply. I will keep my mouth shut. BobQuote from: Bobh on June 12, 2011, 09:09:30 AM
I will keep my mouth shut.

Not at all. What you wrote backs up what I said, that he should try plugging a monitor in, to see if it is the screen that is faulty.

Solve : Drop in usable RAM in Win 7?

Answer»

HP Pavilion dv7 notebook
Intel i5 M450
ATI m5650/Intel HD integrated chip
Win 7 Home Premium 64bit SP1

My HP notebook, which I bought last summer, came installed with 4GB RAM, and has not been modified since. On the Control Panel System page under "Installed memory (RAM):" it said "4.00 GB (3.5 GB usable)", and I understood that the other .5 GB was how much Windows or other necessary background services were using. This was fine, and I had no problems with the notebook, but sometime around the last week of May, that line in the CP changed to "4.00 GB (2.43 GB usable)," and the sudden drop in usable RAM has severely affected performance. Literally overnight, my fps in games dropped from 40-60 at max settings, to 10-20 at min settings, and 0-5 fps whenever the graphics changed quickly. It took me awhile after that to finally realize I'd lost over 1 GB of RAM, but I'm at a loss as to what WOULD have dropped my usable memory by that much.

The HP Pavilion series do have the 'SWITCHABLE graphics' feature, with both a dedicated card and an integrated graphics chip, and usually some amount of RAM is dedicated to the integrated chip...however, I would have figured the amount needed for integrated graphics would be very small, and part of the .5 GB that was UNUSABLE up till last month. I'd been using both graphics options for about 8 months with 3.5 GB available (HP doesn't release new DRIVERS for switchable graphics sets, so it can't have been a graphics related update), so it doesn't seem like this feature was the culprit.

Until I get other advice, I don't have much of a guess if this is a hardware or software problem, but I thought and have been told the CP recognizing the drop in usable RAM usually indicates Win 7's memory USAGE, so I figured I'd post it here.

If anyone has any ideas or questions that might help me figure out what suddenly happened to another 27% of my RAM, please post!

ThanksAre you talking about a particular game on sudden change in performance? I would check first on your hardware temps. since you mention its a laptop for gaming...? Performance dropped on any/every game or program that uses a substantial amount of RAM (MMOs, FPS shooters, Photoshop, etc). Since I had to switch things to min settings, temps have actually fallen nearly 10° C (~75° average while gaming), but that made no difference in performance, and temps were always fine before.

While testing the problem out in a few games, I could still set settings back on high, and have high fps if I was just standing still...but if I turned around quickly, or something else came across my screen quickly, (increasing load on memory resources) my fps would drop below 10, so it seemed to be related to the sudden drop in usable memory while running Windows. You could have unwanted background processes running but yet we can't be sure here. Just a suspect. How about your CPU usage? Make sure to set your default resolutions first. A sudden drop in RAM usage would be when turning off other activities such as browsing or any applications.

Solve : Small office help?

Answer»

We currently have a small office staff of 4-5 PEOPLE. We track some of our call backs through Microsoft Access program. Is there any way we could set-up a wireless network that we could all use the program and update it with new clients information through real time? All the computers have Access we would just like it to update the file on everyone's computer when a new user enters informtion. Any information about the process to go about doing this or better options then this I would love to receive more information about. Thank you in ADVANCE for all your help.
I think a MIND shift to a centralized solution is what you need. Having a copy of the database in each and every machine requires COMPEX and error prone synchronization. Why don't you set up a database/web server, have it manage all data and update clients through an intranet, web-based application? Any type of network connection (wireless or not) SUITS this scenario.

Solve : Copying files to NAS freezes Windows 7?

Answer»

Currently running Windows 7 Ult X64.

I recently bought a Netgear Stora NAS and have had no problems with it till now.

Whenever I TRY to copy files to the NAS, whether with drag and DROP or by copying and pasting, the computer instantly freezes. I have to do a hard reset every time this happens.

I can transfer files to the NAS from another desktop in the network running XP.

Just to clarify, this is a NEW problem as I was able to moves files across until recently.

I have tried Windows restore to numerous points and have hard reset the NAS but all to no avail.

I AM able to read files from the NAS which is why I'm a LITTLE confused with this one.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!Quote

NETGEAR Product compatibility for Microsoft Windows 7

Windows 7 is the much anticipated new version of the Windows operating system produced by Microsoft Corporation. NETGEAR is collaborating with Microsoft to provide updates and support for the selected NETGEAR products.

The table below contains a current list of available NETGEAR drivers. NETGEAR will continue to offer additional product software as they become available and will update this list accordingly.

http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/11127/~/netgear-product-compatibility-for-microsoft-windows-7
Whilst I appreciate that post, there are no drivers available on their website for my Stora so that doesn't really solve my problem but thanks anyway...
Too bad the forum was not able to find a FIX. If you do get it to work, it would be much appreciated if nyou could COME back and provide the answer.
By the way, Have you tried it on another PC? Maybe one with the 32 bit Windows?

What is strange is that it was working and then quit. There has been some concern about external hard drives failing prematurely. Software/firmware drivers do not just 'wear out'. They will either get updated or deprecated..** Many here would like to kn ow more about this issue. Was it hardware? Was the firmware deprecated? Drivers?

**Deprecated in this context means the some other agent or service of the OS has been updated and left the once working drivers behind. Sadly, this is not easy to investigate.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deprecation

Please post again if you find any more information.I would be checking that the network card on the affected PC is working OK (by substitution if necessary) and that its drivers are correctly installed.

Solve : Vista loading problems (blue screen flash at startup)?

Answer» HI, yesterday, RATHER randomly i received a blue screen memory dump on my HP 64 vista laptop. After restarting, I am greeted after about 5 seconds of loading with a blue screen flash. (The blue screen literally pops up for about a fraction of a second, and i am UNABLE to make out what it specifies.) It then takes me to startup repair options, in which i have attempted to use system restore unsuccessfully. After a couple tries, a "restore" was declared successful, yet despite this the blue screen continues to pop up, only returning me to the system repair options. I also tried to start in safe mode, only to be greeted with the same blue screen flash and crash. So far, i have been completely unable to get through startup, and am unsure how to PROCEED. I have very valuable files that i would really like to rescue before i am forced to reformat, so any help would be great, even if it were to help me back up my files before i am forced to lose everything. Also, in case it helps, I have had this laptop for a while now, and up to this point it has proved reliable.

Solve : New member, log in screen disappeared?

Answer»

Hi, I'm Mike, and new here. HOPE someone can help! I hope this isn't too lengthy.

My problem started JULY 8th or so. I turned on my computer, and went to the log in screen. I had 2 users on my computer, one limited, and the other was me as administrator. I clicked on mine, and was about to sign in, when everything disappeared except for the background. I was able to sign in by typing my password and hitting enter as usual, even though it wasn't visible to me.

Next, I had a problem for a couple days, where when I clicked on my account to sign in, no matter that I typed the right password in, it said it wasn't right, and made me try again. It always worked the 2nd time.

That was no huge deal, but then the DISAPPEARING log in screen happened this weekend, and I have no idea what was wrong. I scanned for viruses, nothing there.

So far, the things I've done to fix this is
chkdsk
restore to a previous date – didn't work
uninstalling windows updates since June
uninstalling programs or programs I'd installed since June 10.
I reformatted.

I also left off passwords, and have only the one (administrator account. Now, I just go straight to the welcome screen. I'm getting flashing pop up windows when I try to do any random thing (check Windows Update, open Firefox, just anything really). Before I reformatted, it wouldn't let me download any new software (download page appears, no pop up for run, save, etc). It also shuts down any time it feels like it. I can't get to safe mode at all.....

What do you mean "flashing pop up windows"? Can you be a bit more specific? What I mean by flashing window is that the correct window comes up, but it flashes, and I have to close it (by hitting the X many times). Once it finally closes, I can sometimes reopen it and complete the task.

i looked at puppy Linux, and i want to try it out, just not on my computerAnother one is DSL or "*censored* Small Linux" I think they have recently released a new update that upgrade it quite a bit.i've heard of that before, i downloaded it, but i t wouldn't run on virtual box, it just SHOWED tux the penguin.. IDK what happenedSome linux has a HARD time identifing virtual computers. At the very least you should have 2 partitions set up and one of them 1-2GB for swap and formated as a swap partition.what's the swap partition supposed to do?My understanding, is it's the same as a swap file, but Linux reserves a entire partition for it. Much better, since it ensures it's always contiguous.Correct. swap should be 1.5x(your ram) there is a SPECIAL format for it. Some Linux will not run without a swap partition. Some live distros will notice if you have a swap partition and automaticaly mount and use it.

Can any expert PLEASE help?! well, let's look at the position of the keys in question.

c works, o makes a 6, m makes a 0, and u makes a 4.

I can guess, that i makes a 5, and J,K, and L make 1,2, and 3 respectively, as well?

If this is a laptop, it sounds like you mgiht have accidentally enabled the num-pad. keys. Look at the keys uio and jkl, you can probably see another set of labels, indicating numbers.

In EITHER case, the method for switching too and from is different with various laptops. It always involves your Fn key, however. common things to try include Fn+Shift+Numlock and fn+Ctrl+Numlock.

Solve : Windows wont load?

Hey everybody,

I just came back from my friends LAN party. I set up my COMPUTER again, and turn it on. Everything looks good, and then when the Windows Vista loading screen comes on (the one with the loading bar) it instantly freezes. The windows logo and the loading bar is ALSO slightly faided because i guess it didnt get a chance to fully display on the screen. The next day i turn on my computer, and i get the message saying windows didnt load properly, and theres been some sorta software or hardware change. I SELECT load using default loading configuration, and then the same problem happens, it freezes. I force shutdown, reboot then selece boot using last KNOWN good configuration. It still freezes. I didnt try safe mode yet, because i have no idea wut safemode is.

Solve : Anyone else feel this way about file search??

Answer»

As useful as the Search companion and search tools are in XP and Vista, is anybody else like me and sometimes want to use the good old File Search tool provided with windows 98?:

there is something just utilitarian about it that I like- and you don't necessarily have to click through a million balloons to find the right options, AND the search won't start over if you change files on the disk.

Anyway- I've decided to rebuild this tool (again, actually, I had a complete exact replica completely compatible with XP/Vista that looked and functioned almost exactly the same, but FASTER then the 98 version, and didn't have the limit on the number of files it could find.) and wanted to know if I would be the only person who used it, or wether I should bother to create an installer for the little fellow.

Agreed. Fashes whistles and farts sell a product. But it doesn't mean they make it better.I'll use it in a heartbeat...

How 'bout revising the Vista ( "jump thru 7 hoops to get to basic Explorer settings" ) while you're at it ? ?I will use it! But I think just all the file with a read me in a zip (RAR or else...)is enoughQuote from: xcharge50 on February 18, 2009, 01:54:05 PM

I will use it! But I think just all the file with a read me in a zip (RAR or else...)is enough

well, I would like to do it that way, But right now I'm just getting my "BCFile" File Object library to the point where I can use it for this type of project, (COM DLL) which will need to be registered, as with a few VBAccelerator Controls (for the Listview and so forth)

BUT- I could simply include a batch file with the appropriate regsvr32 commands. and simply specify that that should be run before the program is. On the other hand it would be nice to have an uninstaller.

Just finishing up the Search Classes that this would use. I remember my main hurdle with my previous attempts was that blasted Right-Click menu shown when you right click a file. I won't tell the horror story that is showing that in VB6... needless to say Pidls aren't fun to deal with in a Pointer-enabled language like C++. VB6 only makes things worse.

And once I finished that, I upgraded to XP... and none of the icons had alpha...

I lost the old version ages ago along with several other projects, but it might be hiding somewhere on my old CD-Rs. I've searched them a few times for old stuff and have come up with a few old treasures here and there, but annoyingly enough only projects I had already completely rewritten and improved ten-fold.

"obvious" improvements I should make likely include regular expression file specification matching as well as regular expressions for the containing text- but those are "trivial" to add compared to what I've already done re: the file search APIs.

I only count three hoops.

press alt.
press t.
press o.

folder options.

Or is that not it?OK... I cracked my own whip here, and finally created the "Search" Project for this. So far, this is what it looks like:

the only code I've written so far is the code to create the tabs, switch between the controls on each tab, and create the statusbar text.

The "Look In" combo only lists Drives right now- but I did have a control that would show the namespace stuff that the win98 Find dialog does.

Include Subfolders and Browse controls are MISSING too, and I haven't added the menus yet (toying with the idea of using VB accelerator Commandbar for that one, all the more appealing since I have already written a large module specifically to transform a XML document into a menu... but that is yet another reference to MSXML... grrr.

So far so good, all the search code is near completion, so soon it will be a matter of simply putting it to work, and trying to duplicate the positive nuances of the Win98 Search.Quote

folder options.

Or is that not it?

No.
I was speaking of getting to an Explorer window itself...
Not folder options once in.Ah, ok.

What about Windows key +E?

My new favourite shortcut.

Anyone tried Locate32 from http://www.locate32.net/ ? Opinion?I have not touched Windows search for a long time. It simply sucks.
I use SuperFinder: http://freewarewiki.com/SuperFinder, which installs under Explorer right click.blast you people, quit showing me the competition!

Although my FileSearch Class can already do everything those can do, it's merely making a bloody UI around it that pains me.

But the SuperFinder gave me another idea, Excluded masks. I did the same for attributes, since my "Directory" class needs to separate SubDirectories and Files, but it never occured to me to do the same for File masks. A useful feature with minimal effort.

Creating XP/Vista compatible UIs with VB6 is a huge pain but well worth the effort for no reason.
Waiting for your final product Some good progress has been made. Current Screenie:

Few obvious issues being that the EXCLUDE mask doesn't work, since it's testing it against the full path- for the same reason that the "Filename" column is showing the directory as well, this should be a separate column.

Icons are working perfectly, including the Alpha Channel, no issues there, which I was thinking was my main problem.

I am not surprisingly getting ERRORS (which are ignored in the code, so the file simply doesn't display) when trying to get the info (GetFileInformationByHandle) of some OS protected files, Like pagefile.sys.

Also random Folders keep sneaking into the results even though I'm masking FILE_ATTRIBUTE_DIRECTORY, which is annoying to say the least.

The thing is if it matches the search the file should be included, especially for mask/excludemask searches, since they don't *really* need the info that my CFile class so cleverly tries to retrieve automatically.

Might revise the "size" field, but I really can't think of a better method, right now it counts the number of times the total number of bytes must be divided by 1024 for it to go below 1024, and then uses that number as an index into a String ARRAY ( {"Bytes","KB","MB","GB"} for now), and tacks on the actual byte count in brackets.

And some UI changes that I'll make soon involving resizing, which works fairly well, but the Boxes should expand in width along with the rest of it.

So... it's a work in progress.

Keep going Thanks

say I noticed something in the above image...

the columnheaders from size onwards to the right are using the icon for a DLL/OCX...

I must examine this issue...

Also a thing that I really need to address would be the crash that occurs when trying to search more then once LOL

both of these related to that blasted ImageList...

Although the Right-click context menu is working seamlessly with this app, which is a bit of spoils from a long battle with PIDLs a few months back to get it to work.

UI design angers me. I prefer the coding portion... It's a necessary evil though...

EDIT:

fixed the icon bug. Also works for searches after the initial search.

Vista is a NEW GUI and TCP/IP. The new GUI is a RAM w***e, and the TC/IP causes many problems with gaming.

What does this mean ? ?
I have been trying to figure this out as wellAt least it's got TC / IP ......that feature alone was worth waiting for.

Solve : annoying pop-up on logon - Vista?

Answer»

With Vista Ultimate, I log on and after everything loads it pops up with Internet Explorer, with the address 'Http:///' already in the bar. It does this everytime I log on and is starting to get rather ANNOYING. I tried LOOKING in the 'Startup' menu, but there's nothing there. So I went into the 'Run>Msconfig' menu, and nowhere in the 'Startup' tab is there anything to do with IE.
I'm not SURE what started it, but it just started one day.
I'm suspecting that it could be a virus of some KIND, but I don't have a virus scanner (as stupid as it sounds - I just haven't gotten around to it)
If anyone suggests it sounds like a virus they've encountered before etc, then I'll make an effort to install one. (I will eventually... I'm sure I will )
Thanks,
LukeThere are many free antiviruses around.

The best free one is avg.It is not a virus...LOOK for the "autocomplete" option in IE and disable it if you wish...

Note: You will now get to type in http:// each time you want to enter a web address.Quote from: mylogon on April 12, 2007, 11:28:31 PM

You said it, so I will concur. It is just stupid to operate a computer without an antivirus. If you can pay $400 for Vista ultimate, you can probably afford a free antivirus. AVG works just fine.

Solve : Some Vista Annoyances?

Answer»

I recently imaged Vista onto my laptop through my school, and while almost all as gone well, there are some annoyances I haven't figured out how to deal with. The first is that in my room I have an LCD monitor that I use as a dual monitor setup. When I close the lid on my laptop however, the LCD becomes the default monitor, COMPLETE with Start bar and such, while the laptop SCREEN becomes secondary, and the only way to get it back is to restart with the LCD monitor unplugged.

The second annoyance is when trying to open multiple files of a CERTAIN type, specifically mp3's. I use foobar2000 for playing music, but if I select more than 15 mp3s in Windows Explorer and open them, they open in Windows Media Player. 15 songs or less and they open in foobar, and I can't figure out why.

Any help on either fronts?Correct Vista video drivers ? ?

As to the second ISSUE this sounds like a limitation of foobar itself, not Vista.I'll have to look into the driver idea, but after some more googling and experimenting, I found that trying to open more than 15 of any kind of file doesn't work. I get a different menu if I right click, say, 16 PDF files than when I have 14 selected files. With less than 15, I have the OPTION to Open them, while with more than 15 there is no Open option of any kind. Maybe its just something built into Vista that doesn't like large numbers of files.Hmm. I'd have a look in your folder options, if that exists anymore in Vista! Try tools > folder options. That's where it is in Vista at least.

Solve : Vista OS - Hardware Rating?

Answer»

Hello Everyone,

I took the leap to Vista Business Edition on my computer which is a HP/Compaq running a 3.0Ghz HT Pentium 4 w/ 1MB Cache - socket 478 CPU, 2GB Ram, NVidia GeForce FX5200 8x AGP w/128MB Ram, and 80GB SATA HD, and only got a rating of "2.0"

Made my jaw drop that it was only rated a 2.0, when I was expecting a 5.0 for the fact that its not new, but also not that old of hardware.

Those of you who have taken the leap to Vista or bought a system preinstalled with Vista, what does it report? Anyone reporting a higher rating with similar hardware to mine? Thinking my video card might be holding the rating down.

DaveHey Dave.
nothing to Worry about the Rating. Before the Rating is shown on ur system there are a lot of things which are taken into consideration which includes system processor speed, Video card capacity, FSB , L2 cache and every part which could perform...

Still 2.0 is a lil low...may be increasing a few thing might help Why do you want Vista ? ?Quote from: patio on April 14, 2007, 04:24:38 PM

Why do you want Vista ? ?

Since I will have to support it at my job, I FIGURED I should install it on one of my systems and familiarize myslef with it. A order of laptops are on their way for users with Vista Business, so I had the company buy a copy of Vista Business for me to install and work with.

Not very impressed with it so far, and I had to SWITCH it to classic view to not go insane since I use Start-> Run a lot.

I imaged my system before installing Vista, so I can revert back to XP Pro SP2 when done working with it.

Dave2.0 seems right to me for that system.
The RAM is fine. but the CPU is quite old, and the graphics card is not only old but low end, plus it is AGP.
But the RAM is fine.
The score is based on not only the speeds but the technologies, so a PCI-E card will score more than an AGP card (or so I've been told).
The GPU is a big part of the score now too, as is having a fast HDD.
Take a look here - that article explains a lot about the scores, including how and why you may score low.
The score also goes up to 5, not 10.The bottleneck on your system for multimedia usage is indeed your video card. I dont need a good GUI or background or effects in the toolbar or the sidebar thing, i just need something that can do my work.
That includes browsing CH, playing games and doing homework. I dont have the need for a fancy 3d toolbar.
I voted in the middle because i think Vista has a fair share of disappointment and approval. If you don't want a fancy 3d toolbar then don't use it. If you purposefully vote incorrectly on a poll just because you don't like the software it is going to cloud the results. The poll is what hardware rating you were given by the upgrade tool thing, not what you think of Vista.

OP, your graphics card is the main bottleneck I think. I wouldn't use an FX5200 to PLAY Solitaire

Callam or others, I'm a bit concerned about a 3Ghz processor being weak. I have an Athlon 64 3000+. I know it's not the top of the bunch but is my computer now *sniff* old?LOL - FX5200 for solitaire ... Funny thing is that when you go to games on this Vista OS system it scores so low with 2.0 that Solitaire isn't even an option....

Going to switch back to XP Soon!!!! Better performance and less troubles with software yet to support it like Norton Antivirus Corporate Edition 10.2.2002.

Also my appologies for setting the scale rating from 0 to 10, didnt know it was based on 0 to 5, makes me feel better I guess that It scores in the 40% range vs 20%.

Also thanks for the link to the ratings, now I understand it better.

I've never seen a machine score 5...just finished a new build with a Dual core Intel 6600 an MSI Platinum MBoard with 2G of matched pair RAM modules and it scored a 3...i honestly don't know what they expect.Quote

It's not 64 bit though and has only 1Mb of L2 cache, whereas newer CPUs have 2 or 4, which WOULD bring the rating down. It will also be a slower version as it is S478, which is rather old.
I said it was old, not weak.
And yes, your PC is old.
All of them are - as soon as you buy a PC, it is outdated.

What graphics card?
I bet that's what's holding it back.We put in the:

Video Adapter Properties
Device Description NVIDIA Quadro FX 3400/4400

He chose this for Autocad...not much gaming. That's equivalent to the GeForce 6800, so I don't SEE that card holding the rating back more than maybe 1 point.
The only other thing I can think of would be the HDD, if it was slow that would hold the rating back.Brand new SATA II Maxtor 200g partitioned in half....

Solve : Vista vs XP?

Answer»

This place has been invaluable to me in the past and I value your opinions.
Around holiday time I bought a new HP laptop (Pavillion DV2000) loaded with XP.
I also received a free certificate for a Vista ugrade , which should be arriving anyday, when it's released.

What are your FEELINGS on Vista and should I upgrade or give it time for all the bugs to be found and corrected.

Thanks in advance,
MP. Vista is already released.

XP is supported till 2011, it works and it's compatible with a lot of things.

Vista is new, buggy but still growing. It will eventually replace XP when it comes to compatability and support.

The only reason I'm sticking with XP is because A) I do not feel like upgrading since I got very accustomed to working with XP B) I'd settle for nothing less but "Ultimate" Vista. I would wait at least til they release the first Service Pack....since it doesn't time out on you just hold on to it til then and at that point you could go for it.

At the point you are ready i would suggest adding another HDD and setting up a dual-boot system so that if early on Vista gets cranky on you there is the option of booting to XP and having a running machine.
