Solve : rror code: 0x80070017".?

Answer»
I deleted all my hard drive partitions and formatted my hard drive to wipe it clean. Now when I try to install Windows 7 onto my computer, the DVD boots and the installation BEGINS. The installation will complete the "Copying windows files" task in SECONDS, but sticks at 0% on "Expanding files" for about 30 seconds. I will then receive an error that reads "Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the application. Error code: 0x80070017".

I researched this error but couldn't find a resolution. One suggestion was to download my hard drive's drivers onto a pen drive and load them in the installation, but this didn't help.

I also tried installing Windows Vista and received the same problem.

The error in this case has nothing to do with the copy. I have used many DIFFERENT Windows 7 builds, many different DVDs, burning at different speeds, all producing the same problem.

Only when using the Windows 7 RC disc I was asked to "load drivers" as a requirement. Other builds didn't require me to load drivers.

I really don't know what to do, I just want to get my computer up and running againDo you have a spare HDD to swap with this one to see if the system will take install to a different drive? I have had troubled hard drives act like this before.

For the fact that the OS at the install level detects and attempts to install Windows and its upon the expansion part that its FAILING, I dont believe it to be driver related, but related to the expansion failure in which a troubled drive is probably the cause.

Was this system crashed or having problems prior to this, and if so what problem specifically or was this just an attempt to wipe a system clean that was working perfectly fine prior? Why use Win RC ? ?

Solve : Unreadable extracted files?

Answer»

I can never read extracted files. I know how to extract them but they then APPEAR in a list of files that are full of html code not text like in Word. They all have XML extensions. How can I read just the text rather than the code.
I know there is a simple way to read extracted files but I can't fathom it.
Thank you"Extracted files" (from a compressed archive, presumably) can be any type of file, not just html. You can read html files in a web browser. Other types of file may need their own program. Give us something to work with. Names or descriptions of files, where did you get them etc.

Sounds like you are extracting a OOXML format document (office 2007+,OpenOffice) (xlsx, docx).

Don't. open it as docx or xlsx as you should be doing.More Information:
I've extracted the folder which now appears in three file folders - _rels, docProps, word and (another file on its own) [Content Types].
Now I just want to read the main file so I click on the word folder, because that has the BIGGEST file in it 39kb: Content document. This is an XML doxument. My question is not so much why this and all the other files in the unzipped folder is XML, but why can't I read it like I'm reading a WEBSITE or Word Document.

You didn't extract a folder. you extracted a Docx word document. a docx word document is simply a zip file. perhaps it got renamed incorrectly.

If you want to read the document, rename the "compressed folder" (ZIP file) to docx and open it in word.

Because it's XML. the XML in and various files that are packaged in the archive that is a docx include data on styles, embedded fonts, pasted linked objects, text, and so forth. Your question amounts to the same thing as asking why you can't read a binary .doc file in notepad like you do in word. Word knows how to translate the markup in the xml files so that it appears as a word document with proper formatting. If you read just the markup itself, you don't get any such translation.(SOLVED) i was getting same problem so i reinstalled the microsoft office and now my files are working....

Solve : File/Program Association oddity?

Answer»

Trying to figure out how to resolve this issue with a Windows 7 system. The other system that is connected to the NAS is Windows XP and doesnt have this issue.

On the Windows 7 system, when opening up a FileMaker Pro ( .fp5 ) file, it wants you to chose the default program all the time before opening. Yet it has a checkbox option displayed that is greyed out that would allow for this option to be set in stone to associate the file with the correct program, yet it doesnt allow for you to check the checkbox to make it a permanent default.

I went into the Default PROGRAMS listing and checked there to see if there was an option there to set this as permanent and no success there.

I also thought that maybe its because the user account is a user account instead of admin, and so I elevated the privileges to admin for this account and logged in as admin. As admin it also is greyed out and not able to set as permanent.

Anyone have any suggestions on how this could be resolved?

For now the work around is that each time a FileMaker project is opened the users have to select the FileMaker program to open the file with vs it opening automatically without prompting. On the Windows XP Home system in the office here it doesnt prompt and it opens when told to do so.

Images attached show the checkbox that is greyed no matter what is selected ( which i placed a red border around to point it out ), and the Default programs listing that shows the FileMaker Pro association to .fp5 files in which the system seems to want to double check with the user vs just opening the file.

*** NOTE: Looking back at the screenshot and reading it completely, i just realized that this might be Firefox asking and not Windows 7 asking what program to open this with. So maybe its a Firefox issue, although it smells LIKE a Windows 7 issue because this box looks more like Windows 7 prompting vs Firefox.

Additional Info: The users interact with a web page located on the NAS. From this web page there is a interface which has pointers to the files associated with the option selected. The user points and clicks on the interface for an option displayed and it calls for the system to go out and request this file from the NAS to open. The Windows XP system just simply opens the file, but the Windows 7 system I cant seem to find a way to set this as default and not prompt. So its either a Firefox or Windows 7 issue. No special settings were made to Firefox on both computers and both are running the latest version of Firefox which even though its Firefox complaining it seems to point the finger back at Windows 7 maybe.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Have a look at this, might help, as those dialogs are Firefox, not Windows, I'm pretty sure.

'do this automatically for files like this from now on' box greyed out'

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/971694

Thanks for your help with this... but tried those 2 add-on's SHARED in the url you provided and neither of them fixed the issue.

The strangest part about this is that the Windows XP Home SP3 system running Firefox 34.0.5 has no problems and the Filemaker Pro DOCUMENT opens right up without prompting, and on the Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 system it has this issue and the browser is the same exact version. Both also are default config with nothing special added other than the change to the home page from the default.

If it was an issue with the NAS causing a "Content-Disposition: attachment header" issue with Firefox, then the Windows XP Home SP3 system should have the same problem as the Windows 7 system, but it doesnt so this is an odd issue that seems to point the finger back at the Windows 7 box needing some sort of tweak. https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/live-http-headers/

You can see what the http headers are here. Note that a server can send different data based on the client headers sent to it.Tried that addon and shared the info captured... I dont see any header info being captured from the NAS to the Workstations, but decided to post the captured content here in CASE something stands out that I am not picking up on. I also thought that maybe showing exactly how I am interfacing with the NAS might point something out as well, and since the sensitive data is on the NAS, the interface and page source has no confidential info and can be shared.

Here is the capture from the XP system:

Here is the local path that the interface resides at with the .lnk shortcuts that point to the data location on the NAS at Z: drive as copy/pasted from browser window. ( Maybe because its not calling a HTTP or HTTPS this may be why its not being captured with that addon since its a local call to load page from, which then the targeted shortcut as referenced in hyperlink triggers to open the Filemaker Pro file associated with it at the NAS at Z: ):

Quote
file:///C:/New_GA_Interface/GrAssist1.htm

Attached Pics show the interface the user see's and interacts with point and click, as well as pic of the local directory tree and shortcut path info to the NAS at Z:

**Also, the reason for not using direct URL paths to the NAS at Z: and going with shortcut.lnk's is because when coded up with direct paths to Z:, then both systems wanted to download the file from the NAS, and this hyperlink path to shortcut was a trick to trick the system into thinking that the content was local, in which the shortcut to the NAS would trigger the file to open with no problems on the Windows XP system, BUT the Windows 7 system while the shortcut method avoids a download instruction from the NAS, prompts for File/Program association, even though the association is already defined in the shortcut in the "open with" under General Tab of the shortcut properties. As seen in last pic here.

It would have been a big problem if users were downloading individual copies of files and the data not written back to the NAS, so this was the method to avoid that.

Solve : Uninstall problem.?

Hi all

I can't uninstall MediaFire Desktop, "uninstall.dat file cannot be found" MESSAGE. When I double click the file in programs there is no uninstall file. When I right click the file then delete "can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program" message. Other third party uninstallers have same problem. Downloading it again and installing doesn't work either. Any help would be appreciated.Try Revo

Solve : anti-spyware software?

Answer»

Helo,

I have installed a anti-spyware software (spyhunter) on my computer.
So, after it was installed, I let it scan my whole computer. It ASKED me to restart my computer so I did it.
After a few MINUTES, there appeared a black screen, it asked to insert my Windows 7 CD for rebooting the system, first time that I saw this.
Few seconds later, after I inserted my Windows 7 disc, my pc stopped with working. I've tryed to restart it manual by pressing on the On/Off button, but my pc won't start.
While I was restarting my pc, I've forgot to UNINSTALL the previous anti-virus (Bullguard).
Can this be the problem?

Can anyone help me to solve this problem? I don't want to format my HDD.
I hope that someone can answer my questions!

Thanks!

Hi , i resolved the problem with CCleaner . Ty all

That is pretty funny, good luck with that 'resolution'. With all due respect, and I really mean that -- not just sticking it in to look cool and soften what's next -- I am not so sure the purpose of this site is served by just laughing at a beginner and not explaining to the beginner what you think is funny. I mean, isn't one purpose here to educate.

I suspect that there weren't too many folks hatched from the Great IT Egg with a head full of all the IT World's knowledge. Maybe I mean everybody was a beginner and maybe picked up bits and pieces of knowledge from mistakes because somebody didn't just chuckle, they also did a bit of teaching.

I'm not stating that there's any harm in snickering at the doings of some beginners or rookies, but throw in a little knowledge once your done snickering and you might just be helping the IT World in some form. And in some cases you might also be promoting some good will in the community where you reside at the moment. I mean the Net community where the chuckling producing incident takes place. Yes, some of us reside in many Net communities, but still ... Well, I suppose I've written enough, haven't I? Probably too much.

Hi, the joke comes from someone thinking they can solve a blue screen with CCleaner. If you don't know, that is actually maybe not impossible but highly improbable. Nobody is having a personal attack we just find it funny that somebody thought that was the answer and others may see this thread to solve there own problems. Before you jump in and judge us all maybe you should take a moment and think of the wider repercussions of making such statements.
we're all here to help but you may not know this a lot of us actually respect each other and see others as friends. Yes we have 'in jokes' but we never act unprofessional when it comes to true advise.

Maybe you need to chill your boots a little, friend. I'm glad you thought I needed to be told what the joke was. That means you haven't done your research and don't know who I am. I like that.

What I am wondering is why none of you explained that to the OP? I mean, didn't explain to the OP what you were snickering about.

Certainly you did understand the point of my post above?

Now how about I tell you why your last line caused me to snicker.

Solve : I am beset beset by offers of drivers?

Answer»

Quite often there appears on my desktop an offer for MANY drivers.
Sometimes the offer is couched as driver updates.

I am of the opinion that my drivers are fine as my machine, (THANKS to Super Dave and others) continues to run pretty good.

What sayest THOU?DLoad and run ADWcleaner...You should never get drivers from anywhere other than the manufacturer's website - Those ads that you are seeing are only there to try and get you to buy WORTHLESS "driver update" software.

Solve : Msconfig HP Digital Image issue?

Answer»

I have an HP PHOTOSMART C5180 printer that when I try too scan to the computer will not unless I have the HP software. So I downloaded the HP Print and scan DOCTOR. Now when I go to start my computer I get a windows installor and it tries to install HP DIGITAL Image so I went to MSCONFIG to shut it off and I can unclick it but the min I hit apply it checks itself. I cannot find the appdata folder. Is there a way besides uninstalling the HP program that I use to fix this?Step by step:

Uninstall the printer in Device Manager.
Uninstall any HP printer software in Add/Remove.
Power down and dis-connect the printer...do not connect it yet.
Power up and install the HP printer software...it will prompt you for when to connect it.

You should be all set...Using msconfig to run a device is just a bandaid and not suggested...I do not want the installer to run
All your issues here revolve around you NOT wanting to install the software required for a device to work properly...

Sorry, but i can no longer assist...Best of Luck.Reinstall something to have the same issue seems to me LIKE a waste of time but whatever you think. And I fixed it without uninstalling anything. TOPIC NEEDS CLOSEDReally ? ?

Solve : **COMPUTER CRASH**?

Answer»

I have a gateway all in one with windows7 home premium. I was downloading windows updates (5 of them) and after the first 2, it said restart comp...so I clicked ok. It was restarting but I have a blue screen with a message box saying..."the comp restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot PROCEED. To install windows, click "OK" to restart the comp, and then restart the application."...I tapped OK, it would restart and go right back to this message. I need some SERIOUS help.....PLEASE HELP ME!!!!!!!!Are you using a different computer to access this website?yesDo you have the computer that's messing up right there at the same work station? Or close enough that you just scoot over to it to follow any instructions we provide here?yes, its right next to meThat's excellent. Then you can provide feedback in a timely manner.

So here is the deal, in my view.

You want to sort of recycle that misbehaving computer, but do it in a way that isn't too much strain on it by loading the basic stuff and making sure that can be handled at this point in time.

You need to do the following, please.

Turn off that computer. Wait a few moments and turn it back on and immediately start tapping the F8 key. Find that key now so you know where it is and don't get all CONFUSED when this needs doing.

And don't go tapping like you are breaking into a bank. Just a light tapping will be fine until you see it go into an odd looking screen style and that should be showing you the Advanced Boot Options.

The three options shown for Safe MODE in the Advanced Boot Options are Safe Mode -- Safe Mode with Networking -- Safe Mode with Command Prompt.

Not sure if you've done this before, but use your keypad and choose just Safe Mode.

Now that computer will boot up in safe mode only and you'll even see a Microsoft help menu pop up, but except for reading it I'd appreciate it if you didn't do anything else with the options shown in that help window.

You see, all we want to do at this point is make sure there are no problems with that computer when it's in safe mode.

Okay, so the computer was in safe mode for about 5 minutes or so and then turn it off the normal way you always do.

Again, let it rest up a few minutes and turn it back on in the normal way without all the key tapping stuff and boot up and at any point if something looks weird post here and I'll see what I can make of it.Ok, I just started it in safe mode and it went to the blue screen and there's a message box that says "Windows cannot complete installation in safe mode. To continue installing windows, restart the computer" Well, that's cute, eh? Stubborn, eh? Okay, turn Mister Stubborn off and I'll get back to you in a moment. or is it Miss Stubborn?lmao...ok, got HER turned offI don't mean any disrespect to the site management here, but I would RECOMMEND you taking a look at some of the advice they offer over at Microsoft when you get in this sort of loop. I just looked at my NOTES and I see I had this link in there for this sort of problem.

Why not take a look at this page titled, Windows 7 reboot loop after installing Windows updates.

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-system/windows-7-reboot-loop-after-installing-windows/79def52a-50a6-4f19-8a9f-44bc197b3e8f

That mod person over there posted a bunch of useful links to Microsoft advice for various scenarios related to your type of problem.

And if I've just broken any rules, I apologize.I looked and didn't help. If you know anyone who might be able to help me, please let me know. ThamksWell, I still have a few other ideas.

Let's try something interesting.

How do you usually turn off Miss Stubborn? When she was working, I would use the shut down key. Now that it crashed, the only way is the off button....I'll try anything at this point before I throw it out the window...lolNow that "throwing out the window" idea will seriously upset Miss Stubborn. You probably think she isn't paying attention to what you write here, but I'll have you know these computers have ways of spying on us humans. That other computer you are using, for example. It's probably feeding all this to Miss Stubborn.

But if you really want to throw it someplace, do you think you can throw it over the Pacific Ocean and get it to land in my front yard?

No, no -- let's get serious.

So you hit the power button and it shuts down, yes? What happens when you hit that power button again?lol...don't think my arm is that good..but I think I could make it to lake michigan...lol. Anyways, I just restarted it and its back on that blue screen with that message box( same message as the first one when I posted this?

Solve : do not download from digital river?

Answer»

BEWARE THIS IS A WARNING

DOWNLOADED FROM DIGITAL RIVER 4 TIMES AND 4 TIMES EACH DOWNLOAD FAILED DO NOT USE LINKS FROM MICROSOFT COMMUNITY THERE LINKS ALSO PUT YOU AT DIGITAL RIVER.
THERE DOWNLOADS ARE OUT OF DATE AND NO GOOD I THOUGHT MY COMP WAS BAD WENT THROUGH A NIGHTMARE OF WIPING MY COMP CLEAN ALL THEY WAY DOWN TO NOTHING EXCEPT FOR BIOS. THIS WAS A WASTE OF ALOT DAYS TIME. I FINALLY GOT A DOWNLOAD FROM A REALLY UNKNOWN WEBSITE AND GOT MY CORRECT VERSION OF WINDOWS 7 FOR REINSTALL

DO NOT GO TO DIGITAL RIVERSorry about your problem, but DO NOT use this forum for your personal rants. Digital River is among the most reliable and respected GLOBAL commerce companies in the world.I've bought lots of software through Digital River and am curious as to what you exactly downloaded for an application that CAUSED you so much trouble?I think the OP was looking for free softwareWhatever he DLoaded it screwed up his capslock key...For what it's worth... I posted some bad news about Digital River today.. However, if they work out a new deal with Microsoft, the company can get back on track.
Quote

Whatever he DLoaded it screwed up his capslock key...

Thanks for the laugh patio Digital river is a respected company, I trust them a lot more than any other dodgy SOURCES that you are using. The download probably failed due to your connection. "Thier downloads are out of date?" - Err... Surely Microsoft's official distribution partner gets the newest versions of everything...

It is not Digital River's fault that you spent time reinstalling your machine, you misdiagnosed the issue and DECIDED to do that, surely the proper course of action would have been to test the download on a different computer and/or connection.

Solve : How to play 'full screen'(but not covering the task bar) in WMP??

Answer»

How to play 'full screen'(but not covering the task bar) in WMP?
Win 7, monitor-21' 1920X1080 native, NVIDIA card.
My videos used to play 'full screen'(but not covering the task bar)...the top of the video would go up to the top of my monitor, and the bottom of the video would go all the way down to the bottom of monitor(underneath the blue PLAYING 'progress bar'), or other words, the blue 'progress bar would over lay the bottom of the video when the mouse is on it, and would disappear when the mouse is not on it.
But suddenly, my videos are playing in reduced size, there's a one inch black bar across the top,
and the bottom only goes to the blue playing 'progress bar'(the video doesn't go beneath as before).
So, I've lost an inch on the top, and an inch on the bottom or screen real estate. And, of course
the sides have larger black bars now, also.
Normally, I use the 'Fit video to player on resize', and 'Fit player to video', at 200%.
I've played with those settings, trying various combinations, nothing seems to reset my
playing size. I've verified that my monitor resolution hasn't changed, it's still 1920X1080.
When I used to do 'full screen'(covering the task bar), the blue 'progress bar' would disappear, but now the blue 'progress bar' is showing.
Did Microsoft push an update that makes so the progress bar is ALWAYS visible, and reduces your
screen real estate?
Anyone know how to fix this? Is there a 'hidden setting' somewhere that I'm not aware of?
Thanks!

Solve : How to force specific usb drivers to try to resurect an android tablet?

Answer»

I installed incompatible drivers to a LePan II (tc979) android tablet. and it pretty much died instantly. i used to try many things with it knowing that i have the CORRECT usb drivers : AnyDATA_USB_Driver and the official firmware :Release_LePanII_v406_Secured_Fused_fast boot.
But that error made the tablet really BRICKED, and it WONT show any sign of life (wont power on) the only thing i have is "unknown device" in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers tab of device manager.
I tried several ways to update the drivers to the one that is made for the tablet and all i get is "the best driver software for your device is already installed - Unknown device"
even after uninstalling them and trying a few device drivers on my computer...
it just wont WORK and without being able to DETECT my tablet the firware cant restore life to it.
Can somebody help me?

Solve : December, 2014 Updates -- KB3004394?

Answer»

I had a problem with ONE of my Win7 units and after some research found out that this update is a problem -- KB3004394.

I also understand that it has been "pulled" by MICROSOFT. Placed in quote marks because that's the vocabulary used by one of the Microsoft help staff on their site.

And this is why I recommend that folks do not set their updating to the auto mode. Of course, if one isn't likely to keep up with patch Tuesday events every month then I go against my own advice and tell you to set your updates at auto, because these events aren't so common. But they do HAPPEN and it can SOMETIMES be a pain to set things right when an update needs identifying as a problem and then uninstalled. Thanks for the tip.
Here is the story from Microsoft.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/3004394
December 2014 update for Windows Root Certificate Program in Windows
Quote

Issue for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
We have found that this update is causing additional problem on computers that are running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. This includes the inability to install future updates.
The KB 3004394 update does not cause any known problems on the other systems for which it is released. We recommend that you install the update on the other systems.
An update is available to remove KB 3004394 from Windows 7 SP1-based and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1-based computers. For more information, see the FOLLOWING Microsoft Knowledge Base article

windflowerIt should be as simple as plugging the stick into a USB port on your computer. After a short delay, the stick should appear in WINDOWS EXPLORER as an ADDITIONAL drive on your computer. You can then copy the folder(s) with the photos from the stick to wherever you wish on your computer.

Solve : dual boot mgr gone, need to boot from 2nd hard drive?

Answer»

I had a dual boot system on my 2 hard drives, i had windows xp pro sp3 on the first drive and windows 7 32 sp1 bit on the 2ND hard drive. The 1st hard drive gave problems and i was forced to reinstall windows so i lost the dual boot mgr. What files do i need to copy to the 2nd hard drive so i can boot from it? It keeps asking for ntldr although it's a windows 7 32 bit, not xp. It's a dual core pc with 1 gig ram. I can't seem to find any info on the internet, the closest i found was editing the bcd or bootcfg I think it's called. Anyone know what to do? Thank you.Does noone have an answer or idea?

Yes. When you have a complex system it is imperative you have a spur backup and recovery system. Dual boot and triple boot systems should have image backups as well as file backups.
Window2s 7 should be able to recovery the b boot manager.
If not, you have to do a repair install, which may un-register some programs. This ARTICLE might help youIf the link GIVEN by jason2074 does not help, here is another reference:
http://www.partition-tool.com/resource/dual-boot-windows-7-xp-vista.htm
You don't have to buy the product, It is free for personal use.

Solve : Dual boot help needed?

Answer»

Hi
I've got a Toshiba satellite laptop that's got both windows xp (D) and windows 7 (C) in separate PARTITIONS on the same drive. At the moment when I turn the laptop on it comes up with a page asking which windows I want to use , what I WOULD like to do is to get rid of win xp , format that partition and use the whole drive for win 7 and just have it boot to that. I've had a look in the disk management section in win 7 but when I right click in the win xp partition the format section is greyed out.
Now I can put computers together and change bit's around and I can follow instructions but during 15 odd years of computing I've NEVER tried anything like this , can anyone help please ?

Thanks , AdamSure, many users here do that. But unless your are short on disk space, there is not much advantage removing something the works.

Likely Windows 7 has the XP partition as the boot device. Which means the removing it will prevent Windows 7 from starting.

One method is to create a backup of what you need and then just install Windows 7 again and use the whole drive. This is a custom installation.
Hi

I was sort of expecting that type of answer as xp was INSTALLED first , but hoping there was a work around without having to do a reinstall.

Thanks , Adam

Solve : Buy new computer or factory restore old one??

Answer»

I have an Asus K53E running Windows 7 and have been having the biggest headache with Microsoft updates for some time. I'm not computer savvy about what goes on behind the scenes on my machine -- I just want to use it, keep it safe, and carry on. I admit I have been a bit of an ostrich about the update issue.

The past weekend, I have probably spent 8 hours in trying to work out the problem.

I am not asking you to work out the problem, because I have decided, since the machine is 4 years old already, to do one of two things:
1) buy a new machine (whether Windows 7 or Windows 8, or -- gulp -- Mac, is a different question)
or
2) factory re-set the current machine and SEE if that clears up the update issue and lets me have a do-over.

It seems to me that buying a new computer will RELY on my moving all my desired programs and documents over ANYWAY through a back-up I can make on a terabyte external drive, so not sure buying a new computer or restoring my old one is any more trouble than the other.

Buying a new one will a) cost me a lot of time to research the one I want, b) tap into a virtually empty wallet, but keeping the old one, just restoring it, means I c) have a nice case and a new battery for my current laptop. I like its keyboard. I know its interface. I have some software for it like Office that I can install on it again.

So, what are your opinions? That's still a fairly modern and relevant laptop you have there, I wouldn't advise replacing it for what sounds essentially like a software issue. If you're set on not tracking down the issue and restoring anyway, I would go ahead and do that - if you've had it a little while then you'd benefit from a factory reset anyway, and you've already noted about backing up FILES and reinstalling programs etc so it sounds like you know what you need to do in that respect.
I would recommend taking an image backup of your machine before you reset it, just in case you miss some files or anything while you're backing up - you can do this with the free edition of Macrium Reflect found here - http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
This gives you a full disk backup which you can restore if anything goes wrong. Save it to your external drive and keep it safe, just in case. What sort of problem are you having with updates. Do you get an error? What EXACTLY is happening? Did you try running the Action Center?Keep in mind also if you resort to a factory restore you are back to square 1 RE: updates and would be starting over...I have had major problems in the past with updating windows 8, I found factory reset and correct installation works, I can maybe help you if you want.
Note: are you factory resetting from disk or harddrive because sometimes(though rarely) viruses and data corruption can cause damage to the hidden restore partition.

Solve : mouse or computer setting?

Answer»

how do I change the setting on my computer so the internet site updates without continually moving the mousewhat? Please explain further.

What site updates, and why do you need to keep moving the mouse for the updates to happen? Is the computer going to sleep if you dont move mouse?

Only thing I can COME up with with such limited info is a problem i had 20 years ago with dial-up in which my dial up modem was on Com 3 and my mouse was on Com 1 and in ORDER to maintain my internet connection i had to keep moving my mouse otherwise it would disconnect from AOL 3.0 on the 486 computer. The fix was putting the modem to Com 2 to not share same interrupt of Com 1 and Com 3, where Com 2 shares same interrupt as Com 4 With so many moved on to high speed internet I am assuming this is not your problem.thanks, unlike any computer I had before I must move either bluetooth or keypay mouse or the internet site stops updating. the computer is not going to sleep, everything like video stops. No issue with signal/connection to internet. Please explain which internet site so i may be able to check into the way the site functions in relation to your problem.Additional information. By moving the mouse I mean the cursor. It's every site. My "connecting" symbol stops until I move mouse.

It's frustrating with a BIG site or video. My laptop has touch pad but I USE bluetooth mouse and keyboard with same issue.Sorry for delay getting back to you.

So its a laptop... what is the make and model, and have you performed scans for malware or virus's and has it detected any problems to remove?

What type of internet connection do you have? ( Dial-up, Satellite, CELLULAR 3 or 4G, DSL, or Broadband )

When did this problem first show up?

Do you have the software to rebuild or restore this system back to factory default if needed?Try also using Adwcleaner to scan and clean PUPs and Adwares then follow-up with Free Malwarebytes Threat Scan only after updating the program scanner.

Solve : Event Viewer from a command prompt?

Answer»

Hello,

I set up a custom view to show the results of a Microsoft SECURITY Essentials scan.
It works as intended from Event Viewer.
I would like to execute it from a COMMAND prompt. When I try, the custom view is not found.
Does someone see my error by examining the attached screen shot?

Thanks
Frank C

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Just a THOUGHT. It's not Security Essentials but MicroSoft Security Essentials. It's msseces.exeThanks for the response SuperDave,
Security_Essentials is the name that I chose when I created the Custom view for Microsoft Security Essentials.
You can see it in the screen shot of the execution of Event Viewer under Custom Views - upper left. I added the undersore so that I didn't need double quotes in the command execution. It work fine when executed from the Event Viewer Custom View.

Patio, thank you also,
I don't understand your response of msseces.exe.
If you look at the help for C:\>eventvwr /?
it does define the required inputs for the command. The msseces.exe isn't mentioned.
Frank CThats the wording for the .exe for MSE...Event Viewer's /v argument requires an XML file. You need to export your custom view to create this XML file, then you can specify the exported file in the argument. the "Export Custom View" MENU option is in the right-click menu for the Custom View. Thanks BC_Programmer,
That worked.
Looking at the help for Eventvwr /? it wasn't clear that I needed the entire path in the /V: argument
That should have been obvious to me.
Eventvwr /V:C:\Users\Owner\Desktop\Security_Essentials.xml
Thanks

Solve : the enabling of cookies?

Answer»

I have a inspire dell 530 it originally ran windows XP professional it was taken to the shop for minor work and when it was returned it had windows 7 on it at the time it was a welcome CHANGE. But know when the wireless INTERNET is used I am unable to access my my outlook , MSN and yahoo mail accounts I receive error message telling me I must enable cookies in my browser. Now I have followed several diagrams to enable cookies but the computer is not responding. I have the XP professional reinstallation CD can I reinstall XP so that I can enable cookies for the purpose of accessing my varies mail accounts? That PC should have enough space for a dual-boot INSTALL of both Windows 7 and Windows XP. However, I will not recommend it. Yes, it works for me, but it is a hassle to do.
Instead, may I suggest you try different browsers. Besides IE, FIREFOX and Chrome, your could also try:
Opera
Lunascape 6
Sea-Monkey

And there are lots of others.
I think your problem is the browser, not the Operating System (OS).
My PREFERENCE is Firefox. I like version 33.1
http://filehippo.com/download_firefox/59294/

But if not, use Windows 7 to free up some space on the hard drive (shrink) and create a new primary partition for Windows XP. After you install XP, the Windows 7 will not boot uyntill you do a repair from a Windows 7 recovery disc. Which you would prepare ahead of time.

Did you pay the shop for this Windows 7 upgrade? A genuine copy of Windows 7 would cost the shop around $100, if you didn't pay this then they have likely installed a pirated copy.

Stop: 0x000000ED (0xFFFFFA80082649D0, 0xFFFFFFFC0000185, 0x0000000000000000

PLEASE HELP METhe Bluescreen code description usual causes points to : Hard drive problem, File system problem, Improper boot parameters
http://www.carrona.org/bsodindx.html#0x000000ED

If your computer is a laptop, check the BIOS drive fitness test and run the short and or long test. If the short test contains errors, no need to run the long DIAGNOSTIC as the drive is failing or the culprit. Let US know of the result in order to proceed with the next possible steps to take.

If it happens to be a desktop, check the hard drive manufacturer support site (Seagate, Western Digital, Toshiba) and download to create a DOS bootable diagnostic tool to check the hard drive health. The site has online tutorials on how to create the disc.Alright so i ran a bios trst on it and got "Hard disk 1 quick [303]" then the test stopeed so idk what that meansThe drive is failing...
DLoad and run the Free diagnostics from the HDD manuf. site to confirm...
Run the Long test.Hi,

Go to Control Panel > System (Windows Key+Pause/Break) and then under Advanced, you should see "Startup and recovery", click Settings and you can disable Automatic restart on system failure.

Next time a BSOD occurs, you can see what the cause is.

FYI - A CPU fan failure is very unlikely to cause a BSOD, it would simply cause a THERMAL error on the motherboard and an instant shutdown.

Also, you may want to see BlueScreenView(http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html) a very good tool to help you see previous Blue screen errors.Feel free to ignore the above post.

Solve : locked files on harddrive?

Answer» HI recently a friend gave me a HARDDRIVE with some files on it, some video , some picture, some documents, etc.
It worked fine and I played the video on my TV media player box by plugging the harddrive in unfortunately one of the video files now fails to show on the media player when I have a look on the computer the file shows but as a locked folder which can't be deleted it says new year party.avi now it show as a folder, this has happened before on several computers with several harddrives one of them did it to half the contents on the harddrive video and otherwise. The files can not be scanned after this by any scanning SOFTWARE they are noted as invalid directorys that dont exist or are compressed, whats strange is that it always starts of with a file a INDIVIDUAL file and turns into a invalid locked directory, wierd hay?.

Do you know what this problem is, a friend reckoned it may of been a virus but it has happened so many times on so many computers with so many different virus scanners I don't think their is enough odds of that anymore , if you can help that would be great and sorry to the administrator if this is in the wrong section its a confusing subject and I'm not sure where to put it.

Note: I am yet to try the harddrive on my windows 8 system.Never MIND I worked it out its a WDTV flaw.

Solve : trouble creating a script to find ifa folder hasnt been modified in the last day?

Answer» HI guys,

i really need HELP, i'm trying to create a script that finds if a FOLDER hasnt been MODIFIED in the last day and create a txt file in a location. however if it has been modified in the last day i want it to quit the script.

At the moment, i have only been able to create one (due to my basic knowledge of VBscripting) that finds if a folder exists and if so creates a script.

this however, doesnt work as the subfolder is created daily with a new name and obviously this means my script would have to be changed daily which is pointless.

can someone help me. i need to have the folder read and a txt created in another location if the last modified date isnt < 1 day.

this is the script so far;

Set objFSO = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
If objFSO.FolderExists("c:\test") Then
wsscript.quit
Else
dim filesys, filetxt, getname, path
Set filesys = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set filetxt = filesys.CreateTextFile("c:\test\test.txt", True)
path = filesys.GetAbsolutePathName("c:\test\test.txt")
getname = filesys.GetFileName(path)
filetxt.WriteLine("file doesnt exist.")
filetxt.Close
End If

i look forward to hearing anything!

thank you,

DL

Solve : Can Someone help Me?

i had a Anti Virus Software from my ISP.I decided to get rid of it but for some REASON I couldn't get it to uninstall using an online removal tool or Win ADD/Remove program I finally used a program to uninstall it but it still shows up in the Task bar even though it's not in the Win ADD/Removal window.
Now I got Microsoft Security Essentials but when I GO to update my virus definitions it wont update it says the virus update couldn't complete because of a internet or connectivity problem. Can someone please help me to fix this? Thanks. What anti-virus ? ?Thanks for the reply the Anti-Virus was Rogers Online Protection Suite Rogers. My ISP is also Rogers.ThanksDid you follow the steps as provided by the online support site? Thanks for response.Yes i did run the Rogers online removal tool but it did not take it off so I finally used Revo uninstaller to take it off .It's not showing in the Add/Remove window anymore but it's still showing in the Taskbar.Thanks. Right-click taskbar - Properties and then Customize - Hide notification - Ok.Thanks so much Jason.Really,I've never seen a uninstall like this.I can still see a ghost image of Rogers Online Protection on the deskstop when I click on the icon like it's still install.I somehow feel there is a virus involve some where. All of this strangeness started after I clicked on a link in a email, then after I saw a little screen popped up saying "now extracting" but I've done virus scans but haven't found anything.Sorry for the long post but I just feel something weird is going on.Steve. BTW...Rogers is an ISP...find out which A/V it is...that may help get rid of the remnants..."find out which A/V it is...that may help get rid of the remnants" Thank you but i went through all of these steps already and i can still see the ghost image of the Anti Virus on the Desktop even though it's been uninstalled.I'm just wondering how is that even possible? It just doesn't make any sense. Thanks for the suggestion though I'll go over it again. To: Can Someone Help me

The best uninstall program that I have had the best results is found at:

http://www.iobit.com/update/uninstaller/index.php

This link will give you the latest update, if you use the uninstall button and not the quick uninstall there is a clean up at the almost the end of extras and an option to shred these extras, after the uninstall you see in the taskbar the program name or anywhere else, do a restart and if there are still one or two of the names of the program, just delete them. I am new at the computer technology, but the IObit programs, Majorgeek's programs, How to Geek, eHow, and Tim FISHER at About.com are some of the best online help and program downloads that will not STEER you wrong.

I also suggest that on the security of the program properties is important to take a look at, and make your program 'administrator compatible' so that you have more control in the future. How to Geek gives FREE tutorials and are easy to follow.

Have fun!
Skierskiers

It's ridiculous you would promote any IoBit software here...just sayin...

It's also ridiculous how you made a huge empty 1/2 page Post...Thanks for the reply.I somehow think this is a virus related issue. Not a install/uninstall issue. Thanks

Solve : Browser won't open full screen in Windows 7 IE8?

Answer»

I've recently just started using Windows 7 and I've had a similar problem before in probably both XP and Vista. When I click on a link that opens a new window, it opens the full width of the screen but not the height. It only goes maybe 2/3 to the bottom. I fixed a similar problem before when a window wouldn't open full size and I just had to drag to fit the screen then maximize then close and reopen. Doesn't seem to work this time. Any suggestions? Thanks GUYS. Quote from: munkytown on January 11, 2010, 07:30:25 PM

Close the original window that you clicked on the link in before resizing the new window and it should work.Nope. That doesn't work either. Open the new window. Close the original window. Hold down the SHIFT key and close the new window. Now what happens? Quote from: Allan on January 12, 2010, 05:45:50 AM

The same thing.By the way, I should have said it won't open "MAXIMIZED" but I'm sure you all knew what I meant. Sorry. The FIX I was referring to in my post is dragging the window to fit the screen. I'm not sure how to make the new window open maximized, that may be what Allan's suggestion is supposed to do, I will have to try it.I FINALLY GOT it guys! When I "resized" the window I was just dragging it down from the bottom part of the window to fit the screen instead of dragging from the bottom right corner of the window. In the past, either way would work. Guess Microsoft had to make one more thing more confusing than it needed to be lol!
Thanks for taking the time to help guys! another way you can achieve what you were wanting is to right click the IE 7 or 8 icon and clikc properties and select start maximized from the run window Quote from: talontromper on January 14, 2010, 01:28:27 PM

Ummmm - no. That has nothing to do with the problem. The fix for this rather annoying problem is to open a new window which will not be the size that you want .Then close the original page and only then do you resize the new window .
Close it and reopen your browser ,all new windows will open maximized now .He fixed it 4 years ago...

No anti-virus/malware running or installed

So, I've had this specific hardware setup for about four months now and haven't had any problems with any game or program, up until the beginning of this week, where I was playing Minecraft, and I suddenly got blue screened. I don't remember the error, because it didn't stay on the screen for long enough. I figured maybe it was a one time fluke, because I had done very rigorous testing with much more intensive programs, such as HyperPi, Sony Vegas rendering 1080p, OCCT, FurMark, ect... to get a feel for my MAX temps and such, and they're all completely fine. Sony Vegas I actually use quite a bit for video rendering, and it pegs all 8 of the CPU cores at 95% or so, giving it a max temp of 71 Celsius.

Keep in mind that I run all games capped at 60 FPS, so my hardware doesn't run at max at any time, like it was when it got tested with the aforementioned programs. Well, a couple days later, I get blue screened again while playing Guild Wars 2. GW2 and Minecraft don't even use more than, like, two cores on the CPU, and Minecraft uses almost none of the GPU, while GW2 was using admittedly most of it on the ultra settings.

However, the third time I got blue screened was today, and while I was running GW2 at the lowest possible settings, because I was getting prepared for a huge boss fight with tons of players which crashes the game at ultra settings. The CPU and GPU were getting no where close to strenuous usage, so I can't help but wonder what would suddenly cause these almost random blue screens, when much more vigorous testing programs and games will run completely fine on it and have been doing so for several months of almost 24/7 use.

I have a Windows minidump file, but I don't know how to determine what's causing the blue screen in my games from reading it. Could anyone help with deciphering what this file means and get me started on a path to figure out where in Windows the ISSUE is coming from?

Minidump File: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hogj3d18sy59gfi/020615-4836-01.dmp?dl=1Do you overclocked the CPU processor during this time? It seems its the report found on the dump file while running GW. Quote from: jason2074 on February 06, 2015, 10:20:04 PM

Do you overclocked the CPU processor during this time? It seems its the report found on the dump file while running GW.

The processor has been set at the same speed and voltage listed at the top of the post since four months ago. I haven't changed it at all from that stable overclock. The processor would be 4.0 Ghz default base and uncore - 4.4 Ghz default core turbo, though. The first thing you need to do is download and install both a GOOD anti virus app and MalwareBytes. Then run full scans with both. Let's see what happens after that. Quote from: Allan on February 07, 2015, 06:37:52 AM

I only downloaded MalwareBytes, because I'd rather have a recommendation of an anti-virus than just search for some random one you guys might not agree with.
Here's the threat scan log: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lgbvhuis5myabov/MalwareBytesScanLog.txt?dl=1I would suggest MicroSoft Security Essentials or Comodo.

Remember to only install one antivirus!

1) Avast! Home Edition
2) AVG Free Edition
3) Avira AntiVir Personal
4) MicroSoft Security Essentials All versions and all languages.
5) Comodo Antivirus (Uncheck during installation "Install Comodo SafeSurf..", Make Comodo my default search provider" and "Make Comodo Search my homepage" if you choose this one)

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts. If you choose to install more than one antivirus program on your computer, then only one of them should be active in memory at a time. All of the above are excellent free choices. If you want to pay for a product, I'm a BIG fan of KasperskyAlright. So Microsoft Security Essentials isn't reporting anything to me as far as malicious activity, so where do I go from here to figure out the source causing these blue screens? Does the minidump file in my first post point out anything to you guys as far as a Windows service or specific hardware fault that made it blue screen during my game? The dump file is gibberish when I try to read it. You can post the contents if you like. More important, please do the following

Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Options and UNcheck "automatically restart". Now reboot. Next time the system gets a bsod it will remain on the screen. Please copy and post the entire contents of that screen in this thread. Quote from: Allan on February 07, 2015, 03:13:41 PM

Done and will do. Though, with its unpredictability, it may be a few days or more before I can get a capture of it.Any Yellow !!'s in Device Manager ? ? Quote from: patio on February 07, 2015, 06:38:42 PM

Nah. Everything is all good in the device manager. I've just disabled a sound driver from NVIDIA, because I only usually use the sound from my motherboard ports. Quote

Go back to default or stable clock and voltage output then check the difference.

I was hoping it'd be possible to tell from the dump, or when the blue screen comes up again and I get a capture of it, if it's any specific hardware OC, because the CPU core isn't the only thing overclocked. There's the uncore also at 4.5 Ghz, the 1866 Mhz memory is running over Intel's supported range for the CPU, which is listed at 1600 Mhz, and the command rate timing has been lowered by 1 from original spec. It could also just be a borked service running from Windows, so the unpredictable NATURE of the blue screen means I may not get conclusive evidence just from setting some things or one thing to default, because it may not happen by coincidence, or may be only a specific combination of any of these settings in BIOS together, instead of alone.

I'll wait for the next blue screen so I can get a capture of it, then if it can't be determined from that, I'll start setting defaults. The only question would be what to start with, or if it should be some sort of combination, and how long I need to wait for no blue screen to occur before deciding that isn't the problem. The minidumpfile log

Solve : How to access Recovery Partition (No Disc)?

Answer» HELLO!
I need to reinstall Windows Vista on my Dell Vostro. Somewhere along the way, I lost the recovery discs. But, there is a recovery partition on the computer. I have tried F8, F2, and CTRL+F12, none of these allowed me to access any kind of recovery options (or repair your computer). I have done a lot of reading and GOOGLING looking for a solution, but I have reached a dead end. Can anyone offer advice as to what is the easiest and most cost efficient way to get this accomplished?
Thank you in advance for your help!Welcome to CH.
On first post it is important to provide as much info as possible. Recovery partition methods vary by manufacturer. So we need to know the make and model of you computer. Is it a laptop? Is it a Toshiba? It makes a difference.

The recovery discs for Windows 7 and 8 will attempt to repair the present installation and patch over any bad places in the system. But it does not install additional material the comes for the OEM (Original Equipment Mmaker). That material, if present, is in the recovery partition.
What I mean to say is that the recovery partition is not a standard module of Windows. It is an option offered by the OEM.

If you have made radical changes to the computer system, the recovery partition might not be available. It is a non-standard partition. Also, extensive damage to the system may make it hard to use the recovery partition. You have to CHECK with the OEM.

Also, the version of Windows makes a difference. My remarks above apply to methods used by the OEM. Now here is some more information specific to Windows Vista. But I have not tried it and do not know if it works in all cases.

The author speculates that it should always work. But he did not prove it.

... To make matters worse I didn’t have the recovery DVDs for the laptop. Thankfully, after hours of Goggling and a lot of swearing and frustration I came across a METHOD in an article. This method should be useful for ALL machines with recovery partitions….
Maybe that will help.

As I mentioned in my initial post, I have a Dell Vostro running Windows Vista.

I will look at the LINK as you advised.

I just want a fresh install of Vista.

Thanks. Quote from: ambs on February 03, 2015, 07:29:52 PM
I have tried F8, F2, and CTRL+F12
Have you tried CTRL + F11, or F11?
See whether you can use this method: To Restore Your Computer From Within WindowsHello Salmon Trout! I tried CTRL+F11 and F11 as you advised. Neither one of them worked for me.

Hello Soybean! I read the article at the link you suggested, and my computer is so ancient that it is not compatible with the Dell Recovery Manager.

Thank you both for your help! I have spoken with Dell's customer service and cannot get anywhere. I think I'll just have to forget about it.Don't give up.
One can get a CD from Dell to install Vista on a Dell. Provided that the PC had been bought with Vista, the Dell OEM version of Vista is only for Dell machines that came with a Vita license.
Of course any attempt to use the OEM CD for non-licensed PCs is a violation of the license and may fail to work right.
I personally have used OEM CDs from Dell for emergency use on my Dell machines that did not come with a CD or DVD. Such disc are sold by Dell at a fraction of the cost of a retail disc, because they are for machines that already have a license.

Hi,

Check the below URL in-order to troubleshoot this issue;

https://neosmart.net/wiki/dell-recovery-partition/Hello everyone!
I am super pleased to say that I contacted Dell again and they sent me replacement backup discs for free as a one time courtesy! I almost fell over because the machine is obviously out of warranty at this point. I had to be persistent though, getting the right department on the phone was quite a task.
Thank you all for your help!

Solve : W8 SIDEBAR?

Answer»

Hiya Fellas'! I have a serious problem here. From some download or other, I have a program named "W8 Sidebar". I deliberately let it install because it sold itself as a handy desktop gadget, giving a lot of information at a glance from a small desktop MENU! It does this, but it causes other problems that are very irksome !

I have tried to uninstall it, but it does not show any installation file anywhere? None of my uninstallers can find it???

If it is the one patio linked, it has no installer or uninstaller, and doesn't appear to automatically set itself to boot with the system in any way. You just close it and it's GONE, and you can optionally delete the executable, which in your case I'd suspect of being in your downloads folder. It may also be in the Startup folder as well...THANKS fellas' I have had a response from the makers, there is a folder in my 'Documents' ... this just needs deleting! Heck, as simple as that eh!. Thanks again mates, I do so appreciate your response here.

As a matter of interest, what do you guys thing of the program yourselves???

Solve : IE11 not showing up.?

Was having problems with IE 11 so i uninstalled it by going to control panel/uninstall program/ turn Windows features on or off. Unchecked where it SAID IE11Shut down and then rebooted my computer. Used Google Chrome to download Ie 11 IE11 downloaded and installed flawlessly. Went back into control panel/ uninstall program/turn windows features on or off and put a checkmark CLIKED ok THEN SUTDOWN AND REBOOTED MY SYSTEM. Now it does not show the Ie ICON ON MY DESKTOP NOR DOES IT SHOW IN THE TASKBAR. nEED HELP
If it's on Windows 7, go to or click start orb and TYPE Internet EXPLORER then hover arrow key on top of search results then right-click - send to Desktop (create shortcut). You can also do a research with the search BAR of explorer (the widows where you browse your folder and LIBRARIES).

Solve : Win 7 - Ghost Watermark Scrolling Marquee caught my eye?

Answer»

Anyone know anything about Windows 7 scrolling hidden from view watermarks. I was working on my Windows 7 64-bit system working within MSPAINT to edit a screenshot that I was going to show a friend on a totally different subject and my left eye caught a STRANGE ripple in the pixels in the top left corner of my display. I thought at first that I had an eye spasm or something which caused this effect, and went back to editing the screenshot to blank out some info, but then about 5 minutes later once again something was drawing my left eye to a oddity in pixels having a slight ripple.

I then stared at the screen and waited and saw text appear and as soon as it appeared it vanished but it was moving from right to left. Its not always showing the same ghost marquee. Sometimes it appears to state Windows ( something ) Home Premium below it and other times its scrolling Microsoft, and other times its scrolling something that I am unable to make sense out of. As quickly as it is seen it vanishes and its just barely visible. If it were a stationary watermark it probably wouldnt be visible, but because its scrolling from right to left its CAUSING pixels on my old dell monitor to show a ripple with ghost text appearing and disappearing.

Here is another strange feature of this ghost in the machine watermark.... if you wait for it to appear and press the print screen key quickly to try to capture it, it doesnt seem to allow for it to be captured. It seems as though microsoft purposely made this watermark unable to be captured by a simple print screen.

I also tried to capture it using FRAPS and it also wont capture with that, so it protects itself from capture from that as well.

The only way I was able to capture this to show was to SET my digital camera to near focus and then record a section of the display that I had seen the text scroll marquee past and film this from about 12 inches away from monitor. And then when I saw it I saw that the camera saw it too.

I then played back the video through quick start/pause over and over to catch the frame where the ghost text watermark appears and vanishes as its moving across the screen from right to left.

Attached is the frame that shows it most defined. I am also going to post the video on youtube if anyone wants to watch what its doing in real time.

I am curious as to first of all... why the hidden watermark like ghost text to scroll across the screen like this. i know that some video games out there have been using this hidden watermarking as a way to collect information from screenshots. The FACT that MSPAINT doesnt seem to catch this with a Print Screen button keystroke to me is just very odd if its like the game companies that are looking for people to share information about their SYSTEMS unknowingly when sharing screenshots that have hidden from normal view info, but yet with the right tool discloses quite a bit about the computer and location etc.

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Sounds like an issue with the LCD, possibly signal interference or another issue with the signalling.

I can't observe anything similar in a VM.Ok.... I finally found the cause of the strange scrolling watermarks.

BC you were right on the money with signal interference. It seems as though the KVM that I have was allowing for a signal from my one laptop that is connected to it to interfere with the display of the desktop computer. I thought the laptop was off, but it was quietly running, and it is Windows 7, so the display info was ghosting to the other video selection.

I double checked on this by booting the laptop to Linux Mint 17.1 off DVD-R and the Linux Mint Logo was on the screen. When going back to the Windows 7 system and watching on the screen for the scrolling of ghost images I saw the Linux Mint logo scrolling across the bottom portion of the display.

I shut down the laptop and the interference is gone.

Thanks for your assistance with this and I feel kind of embarrassed that I jumped to conclusions thinking it was something going on with that Windows 7 build that I never seen before. I guess reading about that one MS developer a few years ago who was able to slip code past the QC process was in the back of my mind when this started happening and I thought that maybe due to some odd reason my hardware combination was bringing to surface something hidden from most users view.

This totally explains why FRAPS and Screenshots via Print Screen were not capturing this.

Well at least if this happens to anyone else in the future, they will find a google hit for this now and know to check their KVM setup to make sure no other systems are running idle or on to interfere.

Solve : How to reinstall windows 7 correctly ??

Answer»

Recently I installed a new windows 7 64 bit but after installation windows is kind of freezing sometimes.

What would be the best way, do I need to delete all drives and create a new one then format or I can just create a new drive without formatting ?The BEST way to reinstall from scratch is to delete and recreate the primary partition during the install process. After installing, be sure to download all of the appropriate drivers for your system starting with the chipset driver. For a laptop, you MUST get the drivers from the website of the laptop manufacturer. For desktop systems, you may get them from the desktop manufacturer or from the websites of the various component manufacturers. Here is a walkthrough of the installation process: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/operatingsystems/ss/windows-7-clean-install-part-1.htm Thanks for your reply.

Is there any software, for example if next time I want to reinstall my windows again, but during installation I would get all software and updates in one peace back, otherwise it takes time to install back everything and updates what takes ages..Yes, you can do a couple of things.

1) The best thing you can do is create an image of your drive immediately after installing the OS, drivers, and Windows Updates. This image can then be used to restore the system to that EXACT same state at any time. The two best products for imaging are Acronis True Image (not free) or Macrium Reflect (free).

2) You can create a custom installation disc with a utility such as RTsevenlite: http://www.howtogeek.com/124368/how-to-create-a-customized-windows-7-installation-disc-with-integrated-updates/

My personal recommendation is to use disc imaging software on a regular basis. You can create a "base" image immediately after installation if you like, and then additional images on a regular basis. Imaging is the best method of backing up your system.Updates always takes ages.. is there any website where I can download them straight AWAY ?

also if I will do backup, all software will be in backup as well same as files?

RegardsIf you use imaging software, it will create a snapshot of your hard drive - everything will be imaged and, when you need it, restored. That includes software, updates --- everything. That's why you should do it on a regular basis. What type of cd disk you would suggest me to use ?

So you are suggesting that I would need two discs, one with fresh windows and updates, second with installed updates and software ?Here's something I put together for another site a while ago. Maybe it will help:

Disk Imaging software takes a "snapshot" of your drive as it exists at the time you create the image. You can then restore the entire image or any file(s) or folder(s) you choose. It is a virtually foolproof way of backing up your system and providing a safe haven in the event of a catastrophe that requires you to blow away your system partition and restore it to a previous state. It also allows you to "TEST" various software and be confident that you have a the ability to return to the prior state any time you choose.

I use Acronis True Image. It is the best of breed, but it isn't free. The best free alternative is Macrium Reflect.

1) I create an image of my system partition once a week to a second hard drive and keep the 2 or 3 most recent images. I also image my other partitions about once a month. I always enable "verify image" in the OPTIONS. It takes a little longer, but insures a valid image.

2) I also create an image before performing any drive level function (IE, changing the size of a partition) or making any significant change to the OS (installing a service pack, upgrading IE, etc). Also sometimes before installing new software.

3) Images may be created on any medium (cd, dvd, external drive, etc). For obvious reasons they should not be stored on the same drive you are imaging. The best option is a second internal hd if you have one and, if you're really ambitious, to an external drive as well (one week to the internal, one week to the external). That's actually the procedure I follow.

4) Images may be created "in the background" within the OS. If you need to restore the system partition, that will need to be done before the OS loads. You can start the process within the application in the OS and it will then tell you it needs to reboot to finish the process. Alternatively, you can boot to a "recovery disk" which you can create when you first install the software (or to the application disk itself if you have one). Other partitions can be restored without a reboot.
Hi, thanks for replies!

I finally have time to reinstall. I have considered my self to install a new 8.1 windows.. can I use same software to do same as I would with windows 7?

Please answer these questions:
1. Do you have the Vista disc that came with the computer?
2. What is the full make and model of the computer?
3. What is the name of the disc that let you format the drive?
This will help volunteers offer some ideas.

You can order a recovery disc or USB recovery drive from HP. See Obtaining HP Recovery Discs or an HP USB Recovery Drive

Solve : No Internal Monitor, Using HDMI, Need to Access BIOS?

Answer»

I have no internal monitor on my laptop, it was severely damaged by someone stepping on it. One attempt to access BIOS using HDMI to factory reset was to disconnect the the monitor from the laptop. So I have no monitor on the laptop. Another attempt to see if I could access BIOS was using a VGA cable and I could not. I shut it off and turned it back on to find it installing a SERVICE pack. And I was extremely frustrated, having been trying to access BIOS through an external monitor for a long time and stupidly shut my computer off while it was installing this service pack. Then I connected it back through HDMI and now I get nothing. I have always been able to access the OS through HDMI and VGA before I shut it down during the service pack install. So, I'm guessing I fudged something up pretty bad. The thing is I can't see anything to know what I fudged up. So I'm at a complete loss.

I'm sure you need to know that it's a Sony Vaio VPC series. I'm sure you'll need to know more but seeing as I cannot see anything to find out, it will be difficult. But I am sure I can get the JOB done, just not really sure what I will need.

I also have the geek squad recovery discs, but I can not see these either through HDMI or VGA.

I have the feeling I'm pretty much out of LUCK unless I buy a new screen, which I'm not even sure I should do if I've completely messed the laptop up. So, really any suggestions would be great. I am honestly willing to try anything. How much to you think the laptop is worth?
Given that you have used VGA and HDMI before, likely you have something more that a smashed display. You should be able to connect to an external display just using the buttons on the keyboard.

Some of the Sony Vaio VPC series were made some time ago and are now worth very little. If yours is one of those, you might want to get a used replacement from eBay and transfer the files off the drive. Otherwise, the cost of a new screen may be almost the same. Depends on the MODEL number. But even with a new screen, you don''t know if that is the only problem.

Solve : XML Editor opens as Notebook and csrss.exe?

Answer»

I have tried Windows DOCTOR and reassociating .XML with other programs. Nothing has worked. I need to be able to view XML files and can no longer do so.

Does csrss.exe have something to do with this? There is no user name in the Processes tab of Windows TASK MANAGER. What is this exactly and is it fixable?

Solve : Can't Install New Fonts?

Answer»

1. If I select – Control Panel – Appearance and Personalization – Fonts – ALT – File, I find I have no Install Font option.
2. Search on the net and find FAQs answers for a SOLUTION. I found an MS-Dos option, where I could start – F8 – Repair – and then type: cd\windows (enter), attrib_-r_-a_-h_fonts (enter), attrib_+s_fonts (enter), Ctrl+Alt+Del.
3. I checked in my fonts folder and discovered that there were no fonts there.
4. I opened Microsoft Word and discovered that all the fonts were still available to use in the dropdown menu.
5. I did a system restore—on completion, it said that nothing had been restored.
6. I shut down and rebooted, and all the fonts in my font folder had been restored.
7. Last year, I switched from Open Office to Microsoft, and I’d installed a font into Open Office, and this font appears in the font folder but not in the Microsoft Office dropdown menu—which means it’s difficult to use, i.e., 1. Open the file with the font. 2. Highlight the font in the font field. 3. Copy. 4. Open NEW document. 5. Paste into the font field, and you’ve got it, but it’s still not selectable from the dropdown menu.
I would like to install some new fonts and to be able to use them. Could anyone offer any help?
My computer is an ASUS K53E. It is installed with Windows 7 x64. I have the latest version of Microsoft Office. (i.e., I installed it in June 2013, but I pay monthly, so I presume it gets updated.)
You should be able to just copy and paste to the fonts folder. Maybe you can't see them because hidden and system files are DISABLED?Right click on the font file which you want to install.

Then select install.

Thats all.

Solve : startup question?

Answer»

does anyone know how long should it take for startup and shutdown in windows 7 ? in other words what is the normal time for it 5 second,10secs etc.

thanks,
chrisIt really depends on your hardware and what you have loading at startup other than the OS. For a basic install with just Windows 7 on semi-modern hardware with a HDD, I'd expect somewhere around 30-60 seconds. With an SSD, probably 5-15 seconds. Once you have all your software installed and probably some programs loading at startup and running in the background like antivirus, with a HDD I'd expect 60+ seconds, with an SSD 10-30 seconds. Shutdown times would be around the same but again will vary.
Of course if you're running a machine with a slow HDD that barely meets the minimum requirements for Windows 7, then you could be looking at SEVERAL minutes, or if you have a motherboard that takes a long time to pass POST then that could add 20 or even 30 seconds to yourt overall boot time, so the above is really just a very rough estimate at best.

For reference, my machine (jn my specs if you hover over "Specs" on the left) takes around 30 seconds from hitting the power button to fully loading Windows 7 and being ready to start programs like Firefox or Office. My board takes a while to pass POST and I have a fair few programs running at startup (8 to be exact).thanks for the reply just I was wondering because my comp with anew overhaul I did of ram and hdd new partition and windows 7 my start and shutdown time is about 10 seconds but to event LOGS eyes I still get warning messages for startup and shutdown is this normal or is the event log a bunch of crapWhat messages do you get in the event log?Mine is 28 seconds...

And i actually never knew that...i turn on the PC and go make coffee so i don't care about startup times...actually my mistake in typing my comp is 20 seconds for shutdown and startup and the event log is always warning error 100 and 200 it says slow boot time and shutdown time. its really annoying SEEMS like event log is never happy. 1) Stay out of the event log.
2) Forgive me for asking, but what possible difference does it make how long it takes your system to boot or shut down? Does it work properly once it boots? If so, I suggest you move on look allen I spent a lot of time rebuilding this comp which works perfect I might add and you being a guru and all I am sure you would go back to everything and check that all is good maybe 2 times maybe 3 times to make sure you didn't miss something. I asked a simple question as to what is the normal startup time and shutdown time for a comp. I googled for the answer came up with nothing. I am really just wondering about the event log but I am really not paying to much mind to it. also it does make a difference as to how long it takes boot and shutdown. I really don't want to turn on my comp and sit there for 2 to 3 minutes waiting for it to boot up. because if that was the case I would be asking a different question.Allan is right.
But for what it is worth, here is what mine does.
About 30 seconds to shut down , if nothing is pending.
To stat up takes about 60 for the BIOS to do the POST and t hen almost 89 for Windows to load and do the start up TEAKS. This is on an older desktop ruining XP. Windows 8.1 does almost the same. I think. Not enough difference to bother timing it.
thanks geek-9pm all I really asked for is some kind of time frame I am running at start to shutdown a every time 21 seconds to be exact. that's all I wanted to know thankyou

Solve : Windows Disk Cleanup?

Answer»

Hello Forum: I am running a Dell Inspiron 560 with Win-7 SP1 , 64 bit, 2.70 GHz dual core processor, 4 GB RAM 500GB hard drive

The problem: I recently ran Disk Cleanup and Windows showed me deletable old files. OBTW, I never delete the SP1 service pack backup files (920 MB) but I usually delete any old Windows Update files and any other small files that Disk Cleanup identifies. On my last Disk Cleanup Windows showed an unusually high 452 MB of OLD Windows Update files. Since I have deleted them SUCCESSFULLY before I figured it must be OK if Windows says it is. I deleted the old Windows Update files. BAD move. All new Windows updates failed to install. I TRIED 5 times. I got the error code and went to Microsoft site and had to download the System Update Readiness Tool. Coincidentally(?) it was around 450 MB. Once the tool was installed I was able to download current updates. Now I am a little afraid to delete any old outdated updates with the Disk Cleanup function. Not looking to repeat the same mistake. I tested the Disk Cleanup utility after I successfully downloaded and installed the latest updates and it is now showing about 70 MB of old updates that I can delete. I have not done it yet since I don't want to delete something that is necessary. Looking back I guess I should have used System Restore back to my last successful updates. It probably would have been a quicker solution. Any opinions or ideas would be appreciated. Thank You Sounds like you made the right choices. Good job!
System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [October 2014] Geek-9PM: Thanks for your response. Do you think it was just a glitch and it is now OK to delete old Windows updates that Disk Cleanup discovers? Right now Disk Cleanup is showing me 70 MB of deletable old updates. And would it have been OK just to System Restore back to an earlier date hoping that the glitch might not recur. Thanks again.Disc cleanup does not uninstall your updates. I'm not sure what happened, but you should feel free to allow it to delete everything it suggest - including sp1 files Quote

70 MB of deletable
Not much to worry about. No HARM in leaving it.OK guys. Thanks for your help!
