Solve : Windows Error Recovery...Done everything I know to do...?

Answer» COMPUTER: HP Pavilion m7750n
OS: Vista
I took a little trip & my 8 year old was the only person who spent any time on this computer. He plays an online MMO & he assures me he didn't do anything unusual.
Having said that, let's assume he goofed something up.
When I start my computer it comes up with the "Windows error recovery" screen. I have tried to "start windows normally" but it goes back to this screen after about 10 minutes. The other option is to "launch startup repair."
This takes me to a sreen entitled "System recovery options" where I select a keyboard layout (US) & hit NEXT.
Another 2 minutes or so...(the computer is going oomp click oomp click the whole time)...
Screen entitled "System recovery options" it says to select an OS to repair. Only Vista OS's are available. There are no files listed in the windows entitled "Operating System, Partition Size, Location." I can choose "LOAD DRIVERS" or "NEXT." I am able to pull up alot of drivers but they accomplish nothing & get me back to the same screen eventually.
"NEXT" Recovery Tool choice & gives me many options all of which I have tried.
Startup Repair, System Restore, Windows Complete PC Restore, Windows memory Diagnostic Tool, Command Prompt, Restore Application.
I can get to a command prompt using this method. Getting there through F8 does not work. (still hearing the oomp click of what I believe to be a hard drive on its last legs.
I have run chkdsk from the command prompt w/o specifiying an f parameter & got some results...not sure how to read them though.
I have tried to run rstrui.exe/OFFLINE:c:\windows but just get an immediate prompt again.
As mentioned, my computer is making a new noise that I suspect is the hard drive trying to read. I have a little hope because I am seeing it pull files from the partitioned drive.
Can anyone suggest other things I can try before I plug the hard drive into my laptop & try a check disc from there? I hope i am not to the point where I have to put it in the freezer (>.<)
Sounds like the drive is on it's last legs...the more you try to fix it the further away your salvageable data GETS...

Slave Drive Info,,,

Hurry. Thanks for the info. I have the necessary cables. Wish me luck! I will be trying to pull my wife's thousands of pictures off it tonight...that is all I am worried about at the moment.Well, I tried everything (even sticking the hard drive in the freezer).....HD kaput!....Now I am trying to INSTALL a new hard drive & I have received the recovery discs from HP. Once I get to the screen that tells me to load the supplemental recovery disc, after 3 hours, I still show 0% progress.

I have a 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda ST315005N4A1AS-RK PN: 9JB1AU-571. I don't believe I have to jumper pins 1 & 2 because my mother board is the following...A8M2N-LA (NodusM3). My computer is an HP m7750n.

Need additional info? Any ideas?

Thanks,
Kenny

Solve : drive won't read DVD's or CD's?

Answer»

Hello everybody, I have a problem, and I am wondering if you can help me.

My D drive is listed in "My Computer". According to my DEVICE manager, my drive is working properly and has been updated.

I've uninstalled both ITUNES and AnyDVD. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Nero. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drive. And I've tried the regedit steps that are on the Microsoft support site.

So basically what is happening is that when I put media into the drive, it starts trying to spin for about 30 seconds, and then it stops. I get the disc icon next to my cursor while the disc is spinning. It's all kinds of media, including DVD's, Cd's, DVD-r, DVD+r, and blank DVD's and blank CD-r's.

When I go to "my computer", and click on the DVD Drive, the disc tray opens and tells me to insert a disc. When I insert the disc, the drive tries to read it for several seconds, and then stops.

I don't know if this will help, but this problem started this morning when I tried to burn a DVD with a new spindle of discs.

I'm not technically savvy at all. When it comes to computers, I have the skill level of a kindergartener. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks! If the drive is 3+ years old chances are it is getting ready to fail...
Sounds like you've checked everything you could up to this point.Thanks. The drive is only about 1 year old.Would it be worth it for me to try a lens cleaner?I've seen them work...and seen them do nothing.if you are using vista then there is an known issue with i tunes trying to REPLACE the driver for the system.

try uninstalling the drive in device manager and then scanning for new hardware. Install the default driver again and see if you can burn then. If you can then the issue is with i tunes. Last time I checked there was no resolution for this issue. I tunes will still work but will not be able to burn CDs directly from it's self.

let us know if this is the case.Thanks. I've actually already uninstalled Itunes, and it didn't correct the problem. One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.
or...
2. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060
Restart computer.
or...
3. Download, and run Restore MISSING CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Solve : Can't find my Laptop,"CAMERA", Location.?

Answer»

I have a HP dv 9535nr Notebook.
I upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7.
When using Vista,I found the LOCATION of the Built in camera, and was ABLE to make a shortcut icon,to turn it on and off.
I could then use the camera to record the family at gatherings, etc. and RECORD them on my HD for later viewing.
Note: After MUCH searching I did find My Camera, and a way to record what it saw.
For the life of me,I can't recall Where I found it.

Now I have Windows 7,and again, I can NOT find my camera Location,so I can Make a Shortcut Icon.
If/when I do,I'll also be trying to Record what it sees.

Would APPRECIATE any HELP. Thanks.Right clik My Computer...
Find the camera...
Right clik it and select create shortcut...Thanks for your reply..I tried that. Didn't work.
I tried Control Panel, found the Icon for the camera. The Icon does NOT make the camera active.

Interesting though,My IM Programs DO cause my camera to BECOME active.

Side note: I also use a HP Desktop machine, and I use an usb Logitech camera.
By using the above Control Panel procedure doing the Icon ,it does in fact bring up Logitech's menu and it does work for me.

Thanks .Hmmmm

But GLAD you found a workaround...Well,I sure thank you for you time, but as you can see by my reply,It didn't fix my LAPTOP.
That is the computer I requested help with.

I'll see if anyone else has any ideas.
Thanks again.

Solve : Windows 7 and Intel issue?

Answer»

I just tried to install a copy of windows 7 home PREMIUM on my computer, and while doing so recieved a message that the installation could not continue and that I needed to uninstall my Intel Proset Wifi software. Well this made no sense to me because then I would not have internet access for the installation, but I just did what it said to do. When I tried an install again it of course said I needed an internet connection to continue. This makes no sense at all to me. Anyone have any ideas whats up with this

ThanksI don't know the answer regarding the WiFi issue but can't you connect to the Internet via cable, at least to complete your OS installation?check the microsoft win7 install db on their site, there might be a solution thereI thought I was going to have the same problem when I initially tried to install Win 7 on my WIFE's laptop - only to find-out I could do a fresh install - however, I did get as far as the part where the upgrade disc uninstalled my WiFi drivers, and a couple other things. Thank Dell for supplying the driver discs with the initial purchase!

Anyway, with the Upgrade discs I recieved the first one is the Upgrade "Compatibility and Set-up" Disc - this one is the culprit that uninstalls uncompatible drivers and programs. Before it told me that it was about to do this, it WARNED me of this and the fact that I would be told to put this disc in after the installation finished so that it could re-install the correct drivers for what it had removed.

Yes, this would leave you high and dry for the WiFi connection settings and your Validation of the Poduct KEY Code, but only until the "Compatibility" disc recovered your driver(s).

And, you could always just use the good old ethernet PORT with its proper cable - if you don't wish to wait that long.

Any home built computer project is a challenge. Even experienced builders find they come across unexpected problems.
With a manufactured product you have a CERTAIN amount of time to test it and be satisfied that it MEETS with the manufacturers specifications.
So, at this point let's put it this way.
Do you really enjoy building computers and trying new things?
Or would you rather play games and be entertained with programs and systems that of other people put together for you?
Now ten, if you answered yes to the first question, you will find many, many people here eager to help you resolve the issue at HAND. However, they will ask you to try to be very clear and concise in explaining what should have already tried. Most likely, your choice of hardware it is all right. Solve : Lost Vista Login Password?

Answer»

My friend has a little predicament. She was on her laptop last night, and SAID she was a little tired at the time. She changed her password, and when she woke up this morning she couldn't remember the password.

There are 3 accounts on her laptop: 1 admin (her account), 1 standard (her BF's), and 1 guest. If she goes into the standard account to reset the password it asks for her password. I've gone to Microsofts website, and they say you have to have a reset disk, or you have to re-install windows. I had her to try to go into the standard account and re-install...but it asks for the admin password.

Anyone have any suggestions??

I'll let you know what happens. The next to last entry on this forum, says to go into Safe Mode. As the computer was loading up, I constantly hit the F8 key and when the MENU came up there was no reference to Safe Mode. The only option I got was to boot into Windows Vista.

If I were to install any kind of software that would help to reset the password, I'm GOING to be prompted for that "password" that is lost.

I've also tried to re-install the OS and I have to put in that "password".

Solve : Microphone.. Windows 7?

Answer»

I have the Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5965. I'm trying to FIGURE out whether or not it has a built in microphone. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 from Vista so I have no idea if I had ONE that worked as some point or not. I am able to start a call with people on Windows Live but all they hear is STATIC. It shows that I have some sort of microphone but it's not detecting my voice at all. The volume on the microphone is turned all the way up. I'm so confused! Should I just get a regular mic and plug it in? No.
How do you know the volume of the microphone is turned up?
Somewhere in your stuff, inside of Windows 7, there is a voice recorder. BRING up the voice recorder and tried to MAKE a few recordings. If you can't get the voice recorder to work, then you've got something plugged in wrong or something turned off somewhere. Most of laptop and notebook computers now have a built-in microphone somewhere. Look in your user's guide.I tried the voice recorder and all I hear is static. When I go to Sound and click on Recording, two mics show up but they say the same thing. They say Microphone - High Definition Audio Device. When I switch the other one to the default it will not let me open voice recorder or speech recognition. So I keep the one it lets me use enabled but all I hear is static.

I have used it before on windows 7 (when it was still in one of the beta builds). I assume the official final released version of Windows 7 should be able to handle it.

I would make a clean system restore point before you start tinkering with that older Movie Maker, in the event that Movie Maker is not working, you can easily go back to previous state.Quote from: 2x3i5x on December 15, 2009, 01:54:04 PM

Solve : HP RECOVERY DISC ISSUE?

Answer» OS: Vista
Computer: Pavilion Desktop m7750n
Motherboard: ASUS A8M2N-LA or (HP Name) NodusM3-GL8E
Recovery Software/Build: 71NAV3PRA4 (I have verified that the s/w received from HP on two separate occasions are the correct recovery DISCS.)

My hard drive crashed. It is gone with the wind. I replaced it with a MUCH larger drive. Seagate 1.5TB/5900RPM ST315005N4A1AS-RK. I also added 2G of RAM to boost the RAM to 4G. This is the system limit according to HP. I can't get the recovery to take.

After not being able to get the recovery discs to work several TIMES I was able to load Windows XP without a problem so I know the hard drive is operating properly.

I have the monitor, mouse & keyboard CONNECTED to the computer. Nothing else. I have tried the recovery with the additional RAM added & without. I have tried it with the hard drive jumpered & without.

I turn on the computer, insert Recovery Disc 1. Turn off the computer. Turn it back on & several files load on a black screen then the recovery screen comes up. I am then told to load the supplemental disc. I insert it & press next or continue. It says it is loading the content. It remains at 0% forever. I get no error message.

I know there used to be an issue with XP machines from HP if you upgraded the hard drive to a different size. However, HP claims that increasing the hard drive size is acceptable on this machine because it is a Vista build.

I haven't been able to find any forum addressing this specific issue. My apologies if this has been addressed previously. Has anyone run into this issue? Help please?

Thanks,
Kenny

Solve : multiprocessor not working anymore??

ever since I upgraded to windows 7 (ultimate 64 bit) I had the idea one of my CPU's wasn't working, the same goes for my vista installation after that.
so now I ran "CPU identification utility" and it returned:

so now IM pretty sure it ain't working anymore.
so do you have any idea what could be causing this?

by the way, the type is core 2 duo E8200 of both and both the processors show up in device managerCPU Identification Utility showed that you have 1 physical cpu with 2 CORES. Are you saying you have 2 physical cpus? What make & model of motherboard?

yeah, I could only see 1 socket in the manual too, but system requirements lab always displayed 2 processors (before I installed windows 7) rated at about 8 GHZ, now it says 1 PROCESSOR rated at 4 GHZ

also, I was told at sale it had a quad core CPUokay, I found out the motherboard was in the wrong box, what I have is Foxconn G31MXQuote

Some hardware information apps describe a dual core cpu as 2 cpus. System requirements lab is known to misreport when dual core cpu is fitted.

So you knew it was 1 cpu already. Anyway, you were told wrongly about the number of cores. I cannot say whether it was a mistake or a lie. E8200 is 2 core cpu.

The board supports a single cpu with multiple cores.

Here is an image of a true "multiprocessor" board with 2 cpus.

I SUSPECT (although I am not sure!) that the OP was previously under the impression that he had a "multiprocessor" system and grew suspicious that one of them was not working when he noticed signs that there was only 1 physical cpu running.

Note how he says that the information from the CPU identification utility confirmed his suspicion that "one of his processors wasn't working" although that screendump shows a normal result for a dual core cpu.

but there are multiple processors running, it was always ranked higher on canyourunit.com
and device manager still says there are 2

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]A dual core CPU has 2 cores inside the package. They are identical and each one is a separate processor. A "multiprocessor" system has more than one CPU. Device manager on my P4 system shows 2 processors and there is only 1 cpu!

You have a single processor. It has two cores.

You have been told this about 4 times now.

Solve : Help, Laptop won't boot?

Answer»

Hello,

I am having trouble with my HPdv9000 laptop. I run Windows Vista Ultimate. Pentium Dual Core Processor, with 2 hard drives

Last night I got a blue screen of death, restarted ran on board diagnostics, came up with driver on my Nvidia Geforce 7600 was not up to date. Otherwise computer ran fine.

Left it on overnight, came out in the morning, noticed the computer had shut off and rebooted on it's own.

So I went to Nvidia's site downloaded and installed the latest driver. Restarted no problems. Did some surfing and had to leave for a couple of HOURS. Closed the lid, left it on, came back screen wouldn't return. I manually turned it off, and then pulled the battery.

It won't boot, I can hear the fans and the drives going, but it won't enter startup. All I get is a blank screen.

Please help!

It is not likely to be a software issue.

That's for sure

Thanks, I plugged it into a spare monitor and was able to boot in safe mode. My images are all distorted with vertical dashed lines through the display. It's beyond me on how to fix it.I did a system restore in safe mode and that is at least letting me use the laptop monitor again. However, now I can't even boot into safe mode. The primary harddrive failed the quick self test.

Any ideas?You need a new HDD...Quote from: patio on December 03, 2009, 06:48:10 AM
You need a new HDD...

That may be part of it but after some more messing with it, I was able to get it almost fully functional again.

Since then it crashed again with Video Card errors. I guess it was fool hard to try and WATCH videos on it.

Anyway, when it was running correctly (earlier today) all aspects of the C: drive worked correctly same with all the programs. The only trouble game when I "put stress" on the video card by running video or CADTrust me if the drive failed even the short test you don't have long before you lose everything...I do agree with you, I'm just saying that I believe it is a COMPOUND problem.

Is there anyway I can save my applications while I still have access with Safe Mode? Any repair or replaceement of the primary hard drive is going to cost me access to software that I don't have the discs or licenses to anymore.No.
Programs cannot simply be copied or transferred to another HDD...they won't work.

You may be out of luck with no installation CD's but you should regardless be backing up your important data immediately...So copying the hard drive is only going to copy my documents pictures etc. that I already have backed up?

I don't have access to applications and programs because the disks were never mine, the software was given to me because the startup I was working for couldn't afford to buy another pc, and so I offered up mine. I came to really like some of those applications, and I would like to find a way to keep them if at all possible.

All of my documents pictures everything, was already backed up on the SECONDARY hard drive. What I want are those applications and their dll files and everything. If there is a way to do that in windows vista that is what would really help me right now.

ThanksNo.
I was stating that an Application/Program cannot be simply copied from 1 drive to another...

You do have the option of "cloning" the old drive to the new drive and everything will be in place...

However that drive needs to run properly for the entire "clone" operation from start to finish otherwise if it is interrupted in the process you could lose everything which is 1 reason i suggested stop using it immediately...I was able to get the drive functioning last night and was attempting the clone, but I didn't have the new hard drive yet so I was trying to do it with a stack of dvd's it took so long I ended up falling asleep and the clone failed.

Any tips on how to get the drive to work properly just one last time?Or the computer working at all. The recovery partion I thought was on the 2nd hard drive. Now though when anything I try fails, all I can try are the BIOS options.

The repair options from the F8 menu don't do anything. Start up repair says there is an error it can't automatically repair. System Restore says there are no points to restore to, Complete PC Restore can't find anything, and that includes the Recovery partion on the 2nd harddrive.

Where do I go from here? I have a new hard drive on the way but without the factory installed OS on it, how do I get it to find and use the recovery partion?

Thanks for any help.Again this is why i suggested NOT using the drive...
Sometimes you only get 1 chance and by you insisting on running a failing HDD you may have hosed all your data...

Other than letting it rest completely til your new drive shows up i don't know how ELSE to sugarcoat things...That's fine, if I lost it, I lost it. What am I supposed to do when the new drive shows up?

Solve : New Laptop Help??

Answer»

Hah, no viruses this time.

So I just got the Toshiba Satelite L505D-S5983 laptop.
I installed everything and It works great, except the screen is super jumpy. EVERY time I open a browser, a video is playing, or basically I move any windo or menu, it jumpy around and it looks like it's glitching. I have no idea what to do.
Also, I have a dynadock, which is also TRYING to display 2 screens on my laptop, and I have to change it back to display on multiple monitors and pick my laptop. I dont know why it thinks I have 2 monitors when I only have one though.
But even when its not plugged into the dynadock, the sceen is super jumpy.
Ive TRIED uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, but that did nothing except kill my graphics performance (A windows update put it back to normal).
Anyone know whats wrong?
Im running Windows 7, 32-bit.
I just did some playing, and I turned off Aero by unchecking the "Enable desktop composition" button. When I turned that off, all was right again. But that doesnt give me the look that I want, or all the features the laptop provides.
So obviously the computer is having problems recognizing/running aero. So how do I fix this?

The only ones I have checked in performance options are:

-Enable desktop composition
-Smooth edges of screen fonts
-Use DROP shadows for icon labels on the desktop
-Use Visual Styles on windows and buttons How much RAM is in this machine ? ?Specs on Best Buy's website: Toshiba Satelite L505D-S5983. Well with 3G of RAM it should be able to handle AERO with no problem...
You may want to be exercising the Warranty on that machine...Do you think It could have ANYTHING to do with a clash of drivers between the dynadock and the video card one?FYI, at my local Best Buy that same computer model's graphic card on the display isnt workin too well either. May be a problem with that model? If it's a new machine, return it.

Solve : Windows security essentials and Defender.?

I have just installed Windows Sec. Essentials and it seems to be working just fine picking up a couple of trojans. I did UNINSTALL Avast and disabled Defender and Super Antispy as Microsoft suggested and am wondering if I can now enable Defender again, or Super Antispy, as Defender keeps popping up to TELL me that it is disabled and turn it on.
I have Vista home basic, 32 bit.
Many thanks in anticipation.

Q: Is Microsoft Security Essentials designed to replace Windows Defender?

A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windows Defender in ORDER to manage the PC’s real-time protection, including anti-virus, rootkits, Trojans and spyware.

Superantispyware is an essential antimalware tool, so keep running it once in a while.Hi Broni and thank you once again as you have actually helped me in the past.MSE is working well and I no longer need AVAST.Yes, Microsoft DISABLES Defender if one turns it on again so that problem is taken care of and I have not had any more notifications that it is turned off.

hello, recently, my computer that i have owned for about 3 years has been acting weird. sometimes, i cannot GET the pc to turn on right. when i press the POWER button, all i get is the light it shows on the power button.(not flashing) .. i also get a BLACK screen, and on top of that, a loud fan noise. i checked my computer for spyware using the program spyware DOCTOR. it removed all harmful programs but hours later, the computer crashed on its own. now i might know what is causing this but im not sure....sometimes when i'm playing pc games, it just freezes up so there is nothing i can do but hold the power button. i know i am not suppose to but i don't have a CHOICE. can that be the problem? please help me guys, i need you help. Overheating would be my first guess...
REMOVE a side panel and determine which is the offending fan...
If it's the PSU fan get a new PSU.i dont believe it is overheating. i cleaned all the fans out a while ago.. that was my recent problem. but now, when i restart the computer, i get a black screen. so im pretty sure it isn't overheating.Quote from: milkncheese on December 15, 2009, 09:44:38 PM

and on top of that, a loud fan noise.

You have a failing fan in there somewhere...if it was crashing, it would just shut down. and when it turns on, it wouldnt have a black screen...right? )= the only way i can get it to turn on is when i play with all the power outlets until it works.Quote from: patio on December 16, 2009, 07:12:36 AM

Solve : Screen Resolution isn't working properly?

Answer»

Around 2 days ago, my PC's screen resolution went haywire.
I normally have it set at 1280 by 1024, but the next day I logged on, the resolution was different. Not by a little amount, it looked like the PC was at 800 by 600. So I checked the resolution and... It was set at 1280 by 1024. I changed it around a couple of times, to 800 by 600, to 1600 by 1280, but no success. I restarted the computer as well, several times, and NADA (nothing).
Is there any WAY to fix this problem without having to reformat the computer?
The problem is not only affecting the desktop, but it's also affecting everywhere (Windows Explorer, any GAMES I play, etc.)

Thanks in advance,
Azka.

I managed to fix the problem.

Just checking on you, if we're still in sync 2 GB minimum, as stated by MS

2 GB minimum, as stated by MS
however in my experience 4GB is probably the minimum for vista, sometimes my computer's 6 GB isn't enough.

Vista doesn't really consume a lot more memory, on it's own, from XP. the major difference is it's file caching. XP's memory cache was often quite small, and in fact the concepts that SuperFetch implement were really only present in a concept stage- (the prefetch folders) and they were stored as files. SuperFetch basically stores these "prefetch" files in RAM, along with also prefetch data for data files and dlls. Right now, not counting SuperFetch, I'm USING around 25% of my physical memory; so 2GB of my 8GB. I'm running a good number of programs though, too, VB6, Apiviewer, firefox with around 20-30 tabs, Paint Shop Pro, an IRC client, etc.

Basically the "slowness" one experiences with Vista and 7 with less RAM is not really slowness but rather a lack of SPEED, if that makes sense. the "default" speed that Vista and 7 would go with that less amount of RAM, since SuperFetch has either less to work with or none to work with. The problem here is that many people then turn to a "RAM optimizer" such as RAMpage or AnalogX maxmem, these are great for displaying the memory usage, but their actual memory-freeing idea is somewhat misplaced. All it does is move most of what is in physical memory to Virtual Memory by allocating as much as possible. Additionally, this also happens to clear out Superfetch as the allocations incur on it's space.(the "free space" in RAM, that is).

The main thing that people forget is that a single CPU can only perform a single task at a time; more processes and fewer processors means more context switches between processes. the context switch is not instantaneous and can often incur almost 25% overhead when the timeslicing is to low and there are a lot of processes/threads running.

In Early versions of windows, multi-tasking was cooperative; that is, a program needed to actually relinquish control to other applications. This didn't necessarily need to be written into the application; the Default Window Procedure and GetMessage() would call the kernel "yield" function that would allow other programs to run their timeslices as well. However, if a long task occured in a program and that program did not explicitly call yield or a function that called yield itself (such as the Visual Basic "DoEvents" function) then the entire PC would be hung on the process.

With today's preemptive systems this is not the case; a Program can "seem" to take up 100% of the CPU, but really, it isn't- the pre-emptive task-switcher is still allowing other processes to run- (to allow for things such as window drawing* and mouse movement), but at a reduced timeslice. This is why we are still able to start task manager to close the process, or to even see that the process is using psuedo 100% (I mean, think about it- task manager obviously needs some CPU time to keep the listview updated, so for all intents and purposes there is no way you can both see 100% in task manager and have a process at 100%. The only time you can actually have a process at 100% is if it is able to hang a driver; this sometimes happens with Video drivers; you see this in the form that EVERYTHING stops, and you cannot do anything. With Vista, it can often recover from this state, and inform you of the issue. But until it recovers nothing at all happens- since the stuck code is in kernel mode and the pre-emptive task switching functionality only runs for user-mode, no pre-emptive task-switching can occur (driver code CAN relinquish control, but there is so much state information that then needs to be saved and restored it is not really worth it, especially since if the driver hangs your pretty much boned anyway).

footnote: * "to allow for things like window drawing" many might say, But BC! Why is it when Microsoft word is crashed, and I move the calculator window over it, do I see a lot of little calculators?

Ahh, this is an artifact of the way windows draws the desktop. You'll also notice that this behaviour does not happen with Vista's DWM.

With Pre-DWM desktop, every window was told to repaint when another window moved off of it; in this case, moving the calculator window made the window manager send the Word Window a WM_PAINT message. Under normal circumstances, word would oblige and repaint it's window. However, with word hung, the message is instead simply placed in the window's message queue; if and when Word recovers from whatever was causing it to be hung (perhaps an errant VBA script), then all these messages are retrieved and handled, and everything returns to normal.

Vista and Windows 7's DWM completely change this architecture (and it may be the new architecture is partially the cause of the increased base memory usage when Aero is being used, not necessarily the eye CANDY (which are really just bitmaps, no different from that of the Luna themes of XP) but rather the increased state information for the composition of the desktop as well as keeping to copies of every single window surface for compatibility reasons (after all, old applications were not necessarily written to, nor could they predict, the advent of a composited desktop). the new DWM basically takes the textures from every window and composites them together, so there is no change when a window hangs. However, the window texture of that window is "FADED out" as compared to the other window, and, due to the fact that the application is no longer drawing to it's texture(s) no longer changing, either. This is a far more intuitive visual cue to an application hang then having a bunch of little visual artifacts on the screen, especially since the pre-emptive multi-tasking is vastly improved and the heuristic detection for a hanged program as well; it is possible, but very unlikely that the "faded out" window effect will be seen simply on a program that is busy, rather then one that is actually hanged.Quote from: 10twenty on December 14, 2009, 02:53:05 PM

1st of all that is not the MS requirement...
Right on. M$ requirements can make you laugh: HTTP://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/system-requirements.aspxMy own personal recommendations are:

32-bit Vista: 1 GB will work okay, but 2 GB makes life easier. Before Service Pack 1, my advice was always "I wouldn't run Vista with less than 2 GB of RAM." The beta of Vista I ran on a Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 1 GB of RAM was absolutely dreadful...

64-bit Vista: Same as 32-bit, but why would you run 64-bit Vista if you're not going to take advantage of 4+ GB of RAM?

32-bit Windows 7: 1 GB of RAM works nicely, even on Netbooks.

64-bit Windows 7: Same as 64-bit Vista.

Solve : Windows vista problems?

Answer»

I've had this Acer Aspire 4330 for about a few months now and the programs on it started crashing and rebooting. After a while i thought it was a virus so i downloaded windows security essentials and secureIT to make sure that everything was ok. I was also downloading programs for a windows 7 86x OS OEM ISO so i could MOUNT it onto a 8gb usb. Some of the programs made me a little iffy so i started deleting them but it didnt seem to get rid of the errors. I even downloaded windows 7 DVD/USB iso mounter but everytime i clicked it, it said error bout some system files failing. So I redownloaded it and tryed repairing it but those did nothing.
Now thats not really the problem. The big problem is the fact that when I restarted the computer to see if it would fix anything doing that, but it said windows wasn't shut down correctly so it was asking me if i wanted to load in safe mode and I said no. When windows VISTA loaded I logged on and all i got was a black screen and my cursor. I restarted again into safe mode to see if it would make any difference but all it was saying when i logged into my extra user was login... then logging out... seconds later. I tryed logging in severaly times but nothing worked.
Before all of that happened I downloaded ophcrack usb version with vista_free and xp_free and thats now how im running my computer now. I decided to see if I could remove the PARTITION and split it into 2 so i could install something else and try to fix vista while im at it but all it did was remove all the hashes and now I've got 150gb of free space. I have no idea what kind of virus caused this to happen or what i can do to fix it. please help. You need to get legit 1st of all...

If anything, just reinstall the programs to the same location. And "pictures" should not be effected. But as I said, as long as you didn't delete anything there's no problem.the programs didnt work i couldnt open anything that want installed to the new profile so i jsut did it that way insteasdd of worrying with changing the PROGRAM locations and stuffhttp://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/122011-user-account-name.htmlYou did create a new user account with the new username, didn't you?ya i created a new user and username but when i went to try the programs all of them were installed to the other profile See the link above.im on windows 7No difference. Solve : No audio output device installed?

Answer»

I had a svchost.exe (dcomlaunch) problem recently. Along with this problem came no sound. At first, the speaker icon at the bottom right looked like it normally does, but I had no sound at all. Then I uninstalled Realtek audio and drivers, and tried to re-install, when I uninstalled it the speaker icon had an X on it. For some reason, under sound in the device manager, I have two "High Definition Audio Device" and one "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus". Before the LATTER read "Realtek Audio Device" I think.
I've uninstalled all of these and tried to re-install using drivers from the manufacturer of the computer (Gateway) and the manufacturer of the Motherboard. Every time I try to install using a driver the procedure times out or it will say it's been installed successfully even though the speaker icon in the bottom right has an X on it still and I have no sound still.

I can only think it would be a busted sound card. What should I do to determine exactly what the problem is? Thank you.And here are my Specs.

Thanks, I tried that though. Maybe a screen shot will help. For some reason I have three options for sound in the device manager. Two of them the same even though when only the bottom one is enabled will the speaker icon next to the clock go back to normal. I still have no sound even though the computer seems to think I do.

I'm guessing since the card doesn't work there wouldn't be any programs to determine that a sound card is busted. If it wasn't anything else then it has to be a busted card.

On-board as in integrated into the motherboard or as in how the computer was at time of purchase?

Also, is this normal for a 6 mo. old comp, what could have caused this, and how do I prevent it from happening again?

Now I have to find a decent vista 64Bit compatible sound card for $10-30. That's going to have to wait.

All right, thanks everyone. Your help is greatly appreciated. If it's 6 months old, you can always take ADVANTAGE of warranty.Quote from: Broni on December 06, 2009, 05:03:52 PM

You'd have to open the case and take a look, if it's on-board sound chip, or separate sound card.
Considering todays computers, I'd say, it's a chip.I don't mean to be a pain, but you missed these questions:

Also, is this normal for a 6 mo. old comp, what could have caused this, and how do I prevent it from happening again?

Thank you.
Surely, it's not normal, but it happens. When I bought new desktop, hard drive died on me after 6 WEEKS.
There is no way to prevent faulty hardware from dying.Okay, thanks. I really appreciate everyone's help. I'm glad the problem has been pinpointed, and I can start the process of getting it fixed.

Solve : Installing Windows 7?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm building a new computer very shortly, and I want to INSTALL Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on it. I had planned on buying a license from a friend who bought a 3-pack, and is only using 2.

Before I do, I wanted to verify a few things;

Firstly, 32-bit and 64-bit DVD's where included when he bought the 3-pack. He was given 3 codes. Can the codes be used interchangably with 32 and 64 Bit versions?

Secondly, Am I able to just pop in the 64 bit DVD and install Windows 7 Home Premiumm 64 bit edition? This is going on a new hard drive, with absolutley no prior OS.

(My friend had said something about needing an existing 64 bit edition to install the Windows 7 64 bit edition, but you don't need an existing 32 bit OS to install the Windows 7 32 bit OS. Is he correct? The License he bought is for a new installation, NOT an UPGRADE only license!)

Thanks for reading,
-NNJZ (formerly known as Image)Each key works for 1 copy of both the 32 and 64bit versions...you can install either but not both at the same time...

It is as simple as setting the CD to the 1st boot device in the BIOS...inserting the Win7 CD and re-booting the machine...setup will start automatically...

You are going to enjoy Win7...CONGRATS and keep us posted.
Your price for it should be around 50 Bucks as the 3Pack retails for $149.95.Thanks patio.

I am paying exactly 50 bucks..

I thought it was that simple, but my friend is insisting that you need a previous OS that runs in 64 bit to install the Windows 7 64 bit, otherwise you're stuck with 32 bit.

I understand now, I think he's confusing the "upgrade" option you can choose with windows vista.

I appreciate the help, and will keep you posted!
No problem....we'll be here. Before you begin the process of installing Windows 7 on your machine, DO NOT forget to save ALL of your files and settings to your new hard drive or ANYTHING else that will hold all of that, because if you lose your old hard drive without backing it up, you will lose all of that important data. Also, make sure your machine meets all of the system requirements and that you have all of your drivers updated to meet Windows 7's performance requirements. Good luck! I am using Windows 7 on my laptop and I love it. Hope you enjoy it as much as I do Quote from: timtim41 on December 07, 2009, 08:42:27 AM

Solve : Windows 7 max hard drive space??

Answer»

Hi, I have been wanting to replace my laptops hard drive which is 80GB to like 320GB or higher, and I am just curious if there is a maximum limit for how much hard drive SPACE Windows 7 will support. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron E1705/9400 and the current hard drive that I am using is a Fujitsu MHV2080BH SATA hard drive with 80 GB of memory. All comments are appreciated. Thanks NTFS supoorts up to 2TB without any special setup per drive so you have a WAYS to go...2TB! Wow, that's higher than I thought. Thanks patio Yepper...The only concern would be if the laptop was old; in this case, it's recent enough (considering it uses SATA) that all the previous BIOS hard drive SIZE limitations have been solved and bypassed; so as LONG as you can plug in the hard drive the laptop should detect and use it.

Solve : Windows Failed to Start- A Recent Hardware or Software Change may be the Cause?

Answer»

My friend has a Dell Inspiron 530 running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit (SP2) which he purchased in July 2008. Yesterday, he uniinstalled and reinstalled my Microsoft VX-3000's drivers. Today, it is giving me the error message, "Windows Failed to Start- A Recent Hardware or Software Change Might be the Cause."

It gives him:

/Windows/system32/winload.exe
Status: 0xc000000sF

The selected entry could not be loaded because the APPLICATION is missing or corrupt.

When he tries to repair using his Dell Repair Disk (for SP1), it gives

Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

Please note that he told me all of this over the phone, so there may be slight mistakes in the error codes. I have a feeling that because his repair disk is for SP1, and he is running SP2, it is not working. I vaguely remember something about "slipstreaming" Windows XP service PACKS on to older installation disks.

If you could please, along with diagnosing the problem, give me a download link for the Repair Console for Vista SP2 along with instructions on how to use it (as long as its legal)?

Every SINGLE time I come to this help community, I get tons of reliable assistance. Thanks a lot! Vista Slipstream Info...

This is indeed the source of the error messages...you need SP2 minimum. The slipstreaming looks really complicated...the partitioning, reinstalling Vista, burning ISO's, etc. Would this still work if he upgraded to Windows 7? Slipstreaming...although looking complicated at first is the way out of this dilemna...

If in fact he decides to just install Win 7 all his data and apps will be gone...

Only he can decide if this is the way to go...From the articles, it looks like he needs a working Vista OS to get this going. Currently, his computer is not booting in to Windows, and I believe that the single disk Dell gave him does not include the full version of Vista on it (so he can't reinstall on a new partition).

I'm running Windows 7 on my computer, and I remember that the setup screen has a recovery feature. Will this recover the Vista SP2? I'm just exploring options here. No.
He would have to borrow a Vista DVD...it needs to match the version he has installed.
Then he can run the Vista repair. When my XP computer had partitioning issues, I was told to download the Recovery Console for it. Is there a similar download for Vista? The NeoSmart download is a torrent...which is usually illegal. Is there a non-torrent download the ISO? My friend has no other computer in his house...so I will be doing the burning. Why would he think the Recovery Console would solve the issues ? ?

At any rate Here is the DLoad...Hi. I'm the friend that is having the computer issues. I downloaded the file and made the recovery disk. When I boot the disk, it takes me to maybe 5 different options. One of them is "Startup Repair." I pressed it and it searches for problems, but then it says "Startup Repair could not fix these problems automatically." I don't know what to do from here. By the way, the recovery disk looked exactly like the Vista disk that came with my Dell computer. Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.Quote

By the way, the recovery disk looked exactly like the Vista disk that came with my Dell computer.

How is this possible if it was a download ? ?

You need to borrow a Vista CD...it has to match your installed version. What I mean is that when I booted the CD, it took me to a Vista Installation screen, which looked exactly like the installation screen from the actual Vista CD. Also, is there even a CD that has Vista SP2? Also, I have been told by multiple PEOPLE that my computer can be fixed by removing the hard drive and inserting it into another computer to locate a bug. Is this an option? If yes, I can just take it to a repair shop or take it to someone who is Microsoft Certified.

Solve : Vista acting a bit weird....?

Answer»

No i didn't say, and unfortunately, I don't have a backup date far enough back..... guess i'm up a creek!! I do find it ridiculous a "critical UPDATE" from Microsoft can create such a mess on an unaltered system of theirs.... should have been marked "use at your own risk"!! I've found pages of nothing but people having trouble with IE8.... oh well..... I give up on em. How much of IE can you strip out without screwing up anything else??? Or am I now stuck leaving the "dead weight" on the Hard Drive Personally I review every update; IE8 appeared before, but I'm not sure why, but it no longer appears on my updates list, nor on my "hidden updates" list. Only a few updates for the MSRT show up in my critical updates.

I've also had updates make my network card stop working, too. Generally, I review the updates, and don't install new programs or drivers through them, regardless of vendor. this includes Internet Explorer and, since it happened any driver for my hardware. Mostly just security updates.

Since you cannot find a way ot remove the program, perhaps you can uninstall the update that installed it. You can find installed updates:

In the "programs and features" control panel, the task pane on the left posesses a link to "view installed updates"; there you can probably find Internet Explorer 8 and try to uninstall it that way.
Tried that, got error "some parts failed to uninstall"... so in MS wisdom, we leave everything THERE then! Functional or not... Tried to use the Vista disc to do a "system repair"... but it looks like they took that option out too!!! I went to try and got as far as it preparing to format the HD.. so I stopped!! what's up with them taking out USEFUL options and .... never mind. I'll run on Firefox and let er go frankly I don't have time to keep fiddling around fixing their nonsense.... Thank you for trying tho!!is your Vista disc an actual Vista disc? Mine still has System recovery options; it's far better then that offered by XP, actually. Although I do sort of prefer the recovery console, makes me feel smart. heh.

Personally I had updated to IE8 using windows update, but found that it broke my winamp lyrics plugin, so I uninstalled it- went along without incident, fortunately.

I haven't used Internet Explorer in ages for browsing; since IE6, in fact. I found it was the main vector that I kept getting infected with, and since switching to firefox have only had one infection that really affected me.

Does your computer only have problems running IE8? I was under the impression that FF was also experiencing symptoms as with the rest of the system (firefox works 98% of the time, should be 100%! ). My recommendation, since I'm not 100% sure exactly what is going on, is that the next time your working with a clean install is to review each update, MS likes to try to force Internet Explorer and a few other programs because they've made the case that they are "part of the operating system". In reality, IE includes a few components that upgrade the windows versions, IE could easily make an update that includes those updated Libraries but that would MEAN everybody won't get IE.

Microsoft Certainly makes a good number of good programs, such as office, and Visual studio, and so on; their paid offerings are for the most part of much higher quality then what they offer for free, but what they offer for free is by no means trash; personally, I don't like IE; but some of it's VERSION releases broke new ground with windows itself; perhaps only conceptually the whole idea of ActiveX controls, while horrible as a web-based technology, is extremely useful and powerful when developing applications.

I guess MS kind of lost interest when Netscape no longer offered much competition; and then they gave too little too late to prevent Firefox from becoming a powerful adversary.

of course Allan disagrees with me on many points here but I do hope that he can understand my position since I'm not really bashing IE itself but rather logically concluding that while it posessed a lot of potential MS kind of let it sit on IE6 for a bit too long.

We were thinking similar there!! Took the plunge... backed up to cd what I needed to save, wiped the drive and did a clean install....If you're gonna do it.....might as well go all the way! and yes, other programs acted off but only occasionally.... IE8 would lock almost as fast as it LOADED!! I'm running 7 now as it came on the Vista disc with no problems whatsover....thats what frosted me most... I had no issues with Vista UNTIL IE8 went on!! Then everything went to crap... I installed a new driver for my video board, it "seemed to help", for one night! but I still intend to use Firefox as My primary now.... both for Virus resistance...and it just seems to be less of a pain. reason I still wanted/needed IE is I'm going into setting up a Forum board, and wanted to see it on BOTH Browsers to make sure it looked and worked right. Wife does websites and she sometimes works on this one, and I wanted it 100% up to snuff... I'm also going to add new stuff more carefully and check each for any problems before ADDING another new program, AND plan to use the "restore points!! Had I done that, most of this stuff might have been minor instead.... Thanks for the helpful points ETC.. sure i'll be BACK!! Hank

Solve : Vista torrent?

Answer»

According to this site, if I own a 32-bit retail copy of Vista business, provided I use my license key, I can send in for an upgrade DVD (for 9 bucks) with the 64-bit version of the same OS.

However, since I already have a license key, is it legal to just download a torrent of the 64-bit DVD image? If I can save 9 bucks I'd rather do that. I'm a cheap skate There's no telling what you would get with that and we don't support torrents of illegal apps here...Sorry.If you are running Vista Business, maybe you are using Windows in a business? You'd have to be the shortsighted cheapskate of the century to prefer a Bit Torrent download of mission critical software when you can get a legal licenced pressed DVD for the sum of 9 dollars which you can return if it does not work. As patio says you do not know what you are getting. What you download could be full of Trojans or back doors or just plain corrupted files. And burned DVDs don't always last as long as pressed ones.

Anyhow, when you use Bit Torrent to download a file, it is split into chunks, and as the download proceeds, you are sharing all your chunks that you have downloaded so far with all the members of the swarm, and uploading them to some, so even disregarding the licensing question, you would be sharing copyright material illegally.

Quote from: patio on November 25, 2009, 06:56:37 AM

There's no telling what you would get

I kind of figured that, as SamTrout was also saying.....I think I'll just ORDER the DVDWere more than willing to send you 3 of the 9 Bucks....thx anyway... One will suffice

Anyway, I already ordered it Good for you Got my 64 bit Vista TODAY and installed it.. I've been messing with it for a little while now. It's the first 64 bit OS I've ever had on one of my machines, besides the TIME I installed a 64 bit version of Fedora/Linux for a brief period, to test the EM64T extensions of the Pent. 4 646 processor in the computer..

After using the 32 bit version of Vista Business for a while, this certainly seems smoother, most likely due to the obvious--64 bits of code per register.

I've got it dual-booted with my 32bit version so I also got to test out EASYbcd for the first time, besides only recommending it to others. Both names in the bcd file said "Microsoft Windows Vista" and I changed one to Vista 64 and the other to Vista 32 hee hee

Cool OS at the least

I currently run it side by side with Win7 64bit.....seems LIKE that would be an ideal setup for a tech. because if you must referrence one OS or the other you can switch over quickly. For the next 5 - 8 years that may just be perfect..My other benchtest machine has DOS/Win98SE/WinME/ and WinXP Pro on it.way to stay organized!

If I were you, I might put XP onto the machine with Vista and 7, just to keep the old Kernal OS's on one machine and the NT kernal OS's on the other But I'm just weird like that

Sometimes I feel like "Monk".

Solve : Help frequent freezing!!!?

press the start button, type "cmd". Right click "cmd.exe" and select run as administrator.

Command prompt should start; type "CHKDSK /r" and press enter. It will likely ask you if you want to dismount- SAY y. it will likely then say the volume is in use, yadda yadda, "do you want to schedule this disk check for when the system is rebooted?" or something along those lines. Say yes to that as well.

Once you FINISH that, reboot. Note this will take a LONG time, in the area of several hours, depending on hard drive size.yo guys thanks for everything but, I did factory reset and reseted everything like when i bought it. Oh well i didn't need does documents ANYWAYS...PROBLEM SOLVED!

Solve : Computer freeze up?

Answer»

After I am on my computer for awhile everything freezes up. I can't move my mouse and when I HIT ctrl alt del and doesn't work. What happened just before this started (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?Just had the same problem. Here is a short DIAGNOSTIC worklist where it is going wrong. After each step try doing something that would normally cause your computer to freeze. In my case it was trying to copy files over my home network, but it could freeze at any time tho.

1: Unplug/deactivate all unnecesary peripheral devices from your computer. (note: network, modem, sound, printer, television, bluetooth mouse, and all other usb devices)
2: Replug/activate them one by one to rule out involvement. (note: when a device causes your computer to freeze it can STILL be software related, so reinstall drivers first if the device gives problems)
3: Unplug/switch/replace RAM. (note: replace means borrow from someone )
4: Unplug unnecesary drives in your computer (note: DVD drives, etc)
5: Test/replace powersupply. (note: don't remove any hardware from your computer, just plug in the powercables in your motherboard, cpu-fan, videocard and primary HDD after unplugging the current powersupply)
6: Reinstall windows.
7: Test/replace harddisk. (note: this takes a while, so make sure you have a few hours atleast)
8: Cry because you have a major problem, atleast I would. (note: I guess your motherboard is not functioning properly anymore)

Good luck,

STuFF

I really hope this helped finding the problem

On my Laptop i have Visa Home Basic and today had a random advert for St. Trinians 2, and then some wierd - quite nice - atmospheric music playing on loop.
I looked at my Volume Mixer, and it showed the music was coming from a DEVICE called "Windows COM+ Manager. I then looked at Task Manager and sure enough, a program called complmgr.exe is active.
I ended the process and the music STOPPED. I don t know if its going to happen again or not.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what this is, how i got it and how i can stop it?

Solve : Recover files from a hard drive?

Answer»

PC would noT start, so I have removed hard DRIVE to recover some important files before doing a full re-set which will wipe clean.

I have done this with a lap top hard drive and I have a 'special' cable with USB (I think its a USB IDE cable?), which plugs in to another computer, then you simply read it as another drive and copy files over.

But, my cable does not fit seemingly fit the hard drive.

Does anyone know what cable to buy?

Hard drive is a Samsung SP2504C (250GB)You need a SATA connector likely.

Something like this below...

see image

Then you can look around on here for USB to IDE\SATA cables....

Newegg

Many thanks - I think I may have ONE of them 'enclosure' things kicking around somewhere!

Bought in error ages ago, but I never throw anything away I have GOT a Pluscom 2.5'' IDE/SAT to USB 2.0 aluminium enclosure.

I dont know what this thing does at all!

Am I right in thinking that I put the hard drive inside this enclosure, and then usb it to another pc? If this is the case I just cant see how the hard drive I am looking at will fit in!

Can anyone help Slave Drive Info...OK, its starting to make a bit of sense. So I put the hard drive actually into another pc......but

is there a way of doing this via a USB port? (like I did with my laptop hard drive using a IDE/USB cable)I dont trust a USB connection when it comes to retrieving valuable data...I have removed a Samsung hard drive from my Sons pc because the pc will not start.

I want to read the hard drive on another pc via a USB port to copy off a few picture files.

Is this possible?

What cables etc do I need?

many thanks - sorry if i'm repeating myself but just trying to find the easiest solution Quote from: patio on November 25, 2009, 03:28:47 PM

Slave Drive Info...

No extra cables needed...
5 minutes to hook up.

Then you can copy/move burn to cd all the data you want.OK - I have taken apart a 'good' pc (Dell Dimension 3100) and am trying to put in the other hard drive.

But the hard drive I want to slave (Samsung SP2504C) does not have little pins COMING out of it so I cant plug it in

My hard drive looks like this http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/307

Do I need a IDE to SATA connector cable??? If I do need something like this could a link be put up so I know what to buy

many thanksMy disk is a SATA 3.5'', and it is Windows Vista.

Using a USB 2.0 to SATA cable kit by Plexus - I am trying to read the disk from another PC which is Windows XP.

I get the message ''F:\ is not accessable. The file or directory is corrupted and unreadable''

Is this because Vista/XP not compatable or something definately wrong with hard drive.

If the latter - what can I do next to recover my data?

Solve : HP Laptop Keyboard Help?

Answer»

Hi, have i HP DV6833 laptop and it has been acting up recently.
It runs on Windows Vista

When I type on the top row of letters it also TYPES numbers, also when i type numbers it types the letters

for example

1q, 2w, 3e, 4r, 7u, 8i, 9o, 0p. also the arrows don't work left and right.

I thought it might be they keyboard so i bought a replacement one and turns out its still doing it. Number lock isnt on and i have searched but couldn't find any answers any HELP will be greatly appreciated.Have you run a full scan with BOTH your anti virus utility AND MalwareBytes?ok just did and Avira Antivirus Scan, and downloaded MalwareBytes and scanned it.

MalwareBytes found something and deleted it, but the problem is still here.any other ideas?Unfortunately I don't have an answer but wanted to post to say that I just started having the same problem on my HP 9500dv laptop two weeks ago. I also replaced the keyboard and reinstalled the driver but the same 1q 2w 3e 4r problem exists with the new one. An external keyboard works fine and I can't detect any other issues.

I noticed a handful of similar complaints after searchng the web but no fixes -- they all seem to involve HP laptops. My machine is 3 years old so out of warranty -- any suggestions would be appreciated !http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01458194&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3691785Thanks for the suggestion, but this is not a Num Lock problem and when I type "jump" I get j7um0p not *140

The weird thing is that the only keys that are affected are the top row of letters and numbers above them. Also, the directional arrow keys don't work (which is consistent with a COUPLE other posts).

Tried a BIOS update, no joy. Any other suggestions are welcome.Have you been to Control Panel-Regional And Language Options- Keyboards and Languages-Change Keyboard to make sure your default language is set on English? The characters you are typing appears to be a VARIATION of the Korean keyboard shown here http://hangulkeyboard.com/ Language is not the issue (I checked). I even went to the extreme step of totally reformatting my hard drive and re-installing the factory image and still had the same problem. By process of elimination, it would seem to be a MOTHERBOARD defect -- looks like my laptop is now a desktop with an external keyboard

When using any office application or OUTLOOK on my laptop I kept getting a message from microsoft telling me that the version I was using was pirated/unofficial, I made CONTACT with the store that I got the laptop from and was asvised that the copy of vista INSTALLED on the laptop was only for trial, so I purchased Office Home and STUDENT 2007 and had to uninstall the trial version first. I hope this helps!! Double/Triple Post...

Solve : installed windows 7 first, then windows xp?

Answer»

hi,

i recently decided to install windows 7 and removed window xp. been using it for a week and it works great.

however, because i need to develop a software which requires xp environment, i install an additional HARDDISK and installed windows xp pro.

after installation, there wasnt a choice to choose which OS to boot from but rather it boot from window xp as default.

so i unplug the window xp harddisk and now i cannot boot from windows 7. it says corrupted file in system 32

UPDATE
====================
okay i managed to get back windows 7 by repairing. but i dun see a boot selection during startup to choose which OS to boot from.

how should I install windows xp when I ALREADY have windows 7 installed. anyone??
what shall i do?Use the BIOS to determine which DRIVE you want to boot to.

There is no OPTION because you installed XP AFTER Win7 was installed.

Solve : How to delete searc history?

Answer»

How do I delete search history from Google 6.3 tool bar using WIN 7 and IE 8.0? There is no longer a "clear history" button.
Thanks, eddie460
Click the dropdown arrow on the Google Searchbox and the first item should be Clear Search HistoryThanks for the reply, ALLEN. Unfortanetly in Google 6.3 and IE 8.0 the "clear history" button is missing.Hang on....Okay, it's there. It's in the lower right CORNER when you dropdown - it looks like a blue hyperlinkYou are right, Thank you. There were so many there that the ,"clear history" was hidden below the last line. I was able to see just atiny piece of BLUE.
Thanks again

Solve : Need help coping from an e-mail?

Answer»

Hi -
I need instructions. I have received a long e-mail. I want to print only a small part. I know how to hi-light the part I want to print but what do I do next?
I am using Vista Home Basic on an E MACHINE 32 bit. I hope I given enough information. Thanks Bob Copy the TEXT and paste it to a text editor (notepad, MS Word, etc) and print it from there.Allan -
Thanks for your reply. I hi-light the part I want and you say paste it to a text editor. What is a text editor. I have used wordpad but when I bring up wordpad and click on "copy" it goes back to the part of the e-mail I have hi-lighted. Thanks for your help. You have HELPED me before and I APPRECIATE that. Bob I don't understand what you are doing. Just open the email and highlight the text you want to print. Then right click on it and choose COPY. Now open a new document in Word Pad and choose "PASTE".Or highlight ...then CTRL -C to copy...
Then open wordpad and CTRL-V to paste.Allan & Patio -
OK I got it. My MISTAKE was that I did not recognize the copy icon that was in the heading of Word Pad. Thanks BobBob - even if it wasn't, all you have to do is either right-click in the body of the message and then choose PASTE from the context menu or, as patio said, just press CTRL-V to paste. Anyway, glad you got it sorted out.Allan -
What I should have said was: I did not recognize the "paste" icon in the Word Pad heading. BobYes, I knew what you meant .
