Solve : weird font on websites via Firefox?

Answer»

i purchased some fonts from myfonts and it seems like it overrwrote my helvetica or i accidentally deleted it.

you can check out a screen shot here: http://img11.imageshack.us/i/googleapps.jpg/

not sure why it's not defaulting back to arial. i have all the helvetica fonts installed since i purchased them for illustrator but i don't have just normal windows Helvetica. not sure how it was overwritten but it is.

i have TRIED to even purchase regular helvetica but it doesn't seem to be for sale. always weird variations like Helvetica LT or something like that.

my default font is times new ROMAN which shows up fine.

i've analyzed the CSS for that web page and helvetica is the only font i don't have installed. it should just go to arial but i dunno.

i have it set to firefox to ignore my font settings and use what the webpage suggest which has always worked for me. i rather see what the webpage developer wants me to see than just the fonts i pick

any ideas?

PS. i am on win7 using FF. fonts look fine in IE. Windows 2000/XP use Tahoma, Windows Vista/7 use Segoe UI, and earlier versions use MS Sans Serif; Helvetica has not been a preinstalled font since Windows 3.0, actually.

On to the issue though; it would appear that the font SELECTED by the web page is using the wrong encoding; only thing I can suggest is to try running "sfc /scannow" in an administrator command prompt.
yep should have mentioned that i already have run scannow...didn't find or fix anythingreally annoying...wish i knew how to fix it besides reinstalling windowsPerhaps this will help: http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/fonts/f/helvetica_where.htm. I'm sure you can find a source from which to download it, although it may not be free.yep saw that, but i guess my main problem is that the version of helvetica i need comes STANDARD with windows/office. helvetica still shows up in my font list in word but when i select it, it automatically switches to another font.

i actually wouldn't mind purchasing helvetica but all the helvetica fonts for purchase i already own...no one seems to sell the normal "windows/office" standard HelveticaHelvetica does not come with any version of Windows Or Office that is in common use today- (at least, I don't have it on any of my PC's or virtual Machines)

I would try going to your fonts folder and deleting any helvetica font there; then see if you can view these pages that use it, it should use Arial instead.

Arial, for all intents and PURPOSES, is the same font as helvetica.

Solve : Blue screen with several white lines?

Answer»

Hello!
I have a Acer Aspire 5050 (POS)
It has VISTA Home BASIC
1GB RAM
AMD 2.2 Ghz

This is a basic laptop I bought a few years ago for my WIFE's business. Recently it has been crashing giving me a blue screen with what I would call white lines horizontally across the screen. It will stay on this screen until I turn off the power. I have to try to turn it on a few times to get it going again. When it crashes I can be surfing or not even in the room. Any ideas would be very helpful.
Thank You!Most likely overheating...

Solve : account access?

Answer»

Hello everyone. I have an HP desktop with Vista OS. 250 HD, 4GB Ram. The problem I have is that the only account that can be accessed is my account, I'm the acct Mgr. No one else can access the internet on their account. I have tried a lot of things. Is there anyway for me to reformat my PC is or is that a no no? Thanks for any help. If your account doesn't have admin rights, then no, you won't be ABLE to ALTER any settings to other users' accounts.

Your best BET is to contact whoever has an admin account on that computer and have him/her change those settings.

Solve : HP Network Devices Support could not start, Error 2: system cannot find file spe?

Answer»

The problem occurred in a WINDOWS Vista Home Premium PC HP Pavilion Elite d5000z that otherwise runs w/o any problems. The PC is connected to the LAN via a 1000Mbps Ethernet interface. Suddenly, the HP Solution Center can no longer access the network connected HP AIO C7280 which is connected through the gateway's Wi-Fi connection. The same software (HP Solution Center) on another PC continues without problem.

I can still ping to the AIO printer and I can open its portal page with the browser, the OS can still install a basic printer applet, and the HP Network Diagnostic program USERHPNDU_2017.exe can see the printer.

I have tried everything conceivable and inconceivable w/o SUCCESS. disabled Norton Internet Security. Gateway firewall opened, many times reinstalled after deep, complete uninstall of the HP Solution Center Software, using the HP supplied Uninstall_L*.bat files, etc. I noticed that when opening the services window (services.msc) there is HP Network Devices Support service on local computer marked for Automatic (delayed start-up) is not running and starting it manually is not possible. Setting this service to MANUAL start doesn't help either. Norton Internet Security does not find any bad stuff. During the countless re-installation attempts of HP Solution Center the process always fails when the the installer tries to find the printer. HP Solution Center version levels make not difference. At the failure point a message says:

Windows could not start the HP Network Devices Support service on Local Computer. Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

The properties of the HP network Devices Support service reports among other items:
Under "General" tab-- Service Name: HPSLPSVC, Path to executable: C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe -k HPService, Startup Type: Automatic (Delayed Start), and under the "Dependencies" tab-- This service depends on the following system components: >Remote Procedure CALL (RPC) >DCOM Server Process Launcher.

Bottom line: What is the problem with the HP Network Devices Support service, and how do I fix it?

Solve : Cannot open program-keeps restarting?

Answer»

Dell DM051
Intel Pentium 4 CPU 3.00 Ghz
Bus speed 800 Mhz
L2 Cache 2Mb
64 bit
SATA Maxtor hard drive 150gb hard drive

Purchased system used.
Was working fine.
Did not do anything other then plug into Ethernet.
Next time I tried to start it it gave me the following message-with the Vista Ultimate background;
"Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes" "shutting down computer do not turn off".

It does this over and over again. I have tried the following, with no success;

F8 and tried all choices there
unplugged all devices from computer including power and then plugged it all in again.
F12-did not know if there was anything I should change there.

Can you please tell me what I can try doing to get the program to open? I can then get on the internet and download "updates" that it needs.

Thanks you
So it was TURNED off in the middle of an update FINISHING ? ?Ouch!

It sounds like it really was turned off in the middle of an update finishing (as Patio said).

Do you have the Windows Vista 64-bit DVD? If so, boot from it (your F12 menu should HELP with this--select to boot from your CD/DVD). Time for STARTUP Repair:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial148.html

If you can't find the original disc or if, for some reason, the discs that came with it are not the actual Windows Vista DVD (i.e.: some TYPE of recovery disc that only formats and installs bloatware along with it), then you'll have to create a Windows RE disc.

What you'll need:

1) One blank CD
2) Someone else's PC running Windows Vista 64-bit and has a genuine Vista 64-bit DVD.

Solve : Paste from MS works cuts off internet?

Answer»

I copy some text from a MS works wordprocessor file (command C). Then try to paste it into an email I'm composing (command V) while online. Immediately the computer tells me I've lost internet connection, then reconnects me to the email, without the text I tried to copy in.

This is a refurbished Emachine with some other problems caused by WEIRD settings.

NEW: This problem occurs only if the text I copied was on a MS Works document. If I copied the text from Wordpad or from other internet forums, the paste function works just fine.

I'd like to think you mean CTRL-C and CTRL-V. If not, that's your problem.Yep. CTRL, not Command. Our other computer is a Mac.Okay, well you allude to other problems - can you tell US about them? You have some hotkeys or sticky key settings that are doing this...Currently, only one ohter problem. I'm REPLYING to an email and want to delete part of the email I'm replying to. So I highlight that part, press Delete key, and the entire email is deleted from the incoming list.I forgot to add that I don't know how/where to find hotkey settings or exactly what to do when I find them.Start (Vista Orb) > Control Panel

Check for ANYTHING like 'X Keyboard Settings', where X is the name of the keyboard manufacturer. (i.e Labtec, Microsoft, ...)

Solve : connecting to router?

Answer»

Im running XP on my desktop and Vista on laptop.I have a Netgear router wired to the desktop. When I connect router to laptop (wireless) I get half the speed I get on the desktop.Cannot figger out why.Turned off security SETTINGS no change.Any ideas?Welcome to CH.
Is your CONCERN about internet speed or local network speed?
What you describe may be normal for the equipment you use.
How are you reading the speed?
How fast is your internet service?
Typically the DSL SELDOM hits 1.5 mbs and Cable might do 3 mbs.
The laptop and desktop should be doing above 10mbs, so that is plenty fast ENOUGH to keep up with the the internet.

Solve : Mouse and keyboard work in blue screen mode but not when rebooting???

Answer»

Hi,

My mouse and keyboard just stopped working when a family member downloaded something for his IPOD. He shut the computer down and when you turn it back on it goes to the normal 'enter password' screen but the mouse and keyboard are frozen. If I restart the computer and hit F12 (blue screen) the mouse and keyboard work fine for these operations but not for normal computer operations. I have tried starting in safe mode and that does not work... any suggestions? Are you USING USB keyboards and mice?

Did your family member unplug the keyboard and/or mouse to make room for his/her iPod? If so, then your computer is simply trying to redetect your keyboard and mouse on startup. Thanks for the post- Yes I am using USB but already tried unplugging mouse and keyboard before rebooting. When I turn the computer on and hit F2 for menu or F12 for reboot the keyboard and mouse work fine. WHen the system goes to log on to windows the light on the mourse goes out and the keyboard does not work... I guess it is time to take it to the computer doctor. Appreciate your help! That's irrelevant.

It doesn't matter if your computer detects your keyboard and mouse during the POST screen (the black startup screen that detects your RAM, hard drives, and all that good stuff).

Windows doesn't care.

Let's say you have six USB ports. To make this easier, we'll label them 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6.

Let's say you had your keyboard plugged in USB port 1.

Let's say you had your mouse plugged in USB port 2.

Let's say that your family member decided to move your keyboard to USB port 3 and the mouse to USB port 4 because he/she thought their iPod was more important and NEEDED to be in USB port 1.

Windows goes "OMG, where's teh keyboard? where's teh mouse? Oh, okay...keyboard's in port 3 now...gotta change everything around..."

Normally when that happens and your computer's logged in, you'll see the "Found NEW hardware" window for that reason.

However, when you're not logged in, it usually happens in the background and you just have to WAIT about five minutes.

In other words...BE PATIENT!

...if, for some reason, you can't be patient, then grab a PS/2 keyboard, plug it in, log into your computer with that, and then plug in your keyboard/mouse, waiting for Windows to go through it's "OMG, where's teh keyboardz and mouze" phase.

Solve : deleting windows vista and upgrading to windows 7?

I currently own a HP Pavilion dv9000 64bit laptop computer with windows vista. It has GIVEN me many problems and I was wondering if windows 7 would function properly on my current computer. I have tried to do a system recovery to restore it to its factory settings, but it won't work. All I get is an error message. If anyone has any help/advice it would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.Where do you WANT to go from here ? ?

I am trying to RECOVER my system to factory settings and when I try to hit f11 (system recovery) at computer start up it does'nt do anything. I tried something that someone told me to do, which was changin a partition to "active", and now when I try to restart my computer I get an error message that says "boot mgr not supported". Any idea what I can do for that? I'm confused now...
I thought you stated you want a FRESH start ...I do want a fresh start, but when I try to start my computer I get that error message. Solve : dell laptop CPU Usage keeps going to 100?

Answer»

the past couple of days, my laptop has been lagging *censored*. i watch the task mgr and the cpu usage is maxed out to 100%. everthing just starts going sluggishly.

when this first happened, i restarted the laptop, and had to force it to restart, then it booted into a error MODE and it had to fix all these errors, doing a scan disk i guess.... i noticed this as i was actually watching a video on youtube the computer started to lag and hang.

after restart i didnt see the ISSUE untill i tested out some thing, so i decided to do a reinstall of windows 7. i did a regular install and made the windows.old folder and the problem was still there. so today i did a boot from disk install and formatted the c drive and reinstalled the win7 on the c, and the problem is still here.

i notice the problem happens when i start to do a computer task like disk cleanup for system files, or something pertaining to the computer itself...although it also did it when i ran AOL or IE.

what am i looking at here? possible hardware failure?Which PROCESS is eating the cycles?none. there is pretty much nothing running. i did the format today and fresh install, and had the problem right off the bat.

possible hard drive failure? If the cpu is running at 100% then ONE or more processes have to add up to 100%. Period.

Open Task Manager to the Processes Tab and sort on the cpu column with highest usage at the top (double-click on "CPU" at the top of the column). When the processor spikes, which process is causing the spike?ight im on the fresh install right now, and i have the laptop fully loaded with programs and so on, and im waiting to see if it does it again....

Solve : How restore functionality to Office2007 and Window Live mail 2011 in Win7 Ult 32?

Answer»

Randomly - but frequently recently - I am UNABLE to open either old or existing documents in WORD, Spreadsheets in Excel or emails in W.L.M. I have tried relaunching the programs, rebooting the PC and checkdisking the Hard Drive. Each time it SEEMS to be the solution, and then the problem returns. Emails DO open, but with the body content as attachments.Word and Excel files do not, and never have, OPENED "in" WLM. If you double click on such a file that is attached to an email, this should launch Word or Excel and the file should open in the applicable program, not in WLM.

Are you saying double clicking on an ATTACHMENT does not cause it to launch the applicable program and open the file?

Solve : 0 Disk Space : More I delete the less space I have Problem!?

Answer»

Hello,

Can SOMEONE please, please, please help me.

I have a Windows 7 Pro machine, with 500GB and recently it has been decreasing in hard drive capacity to the point I had only a few GBS left, so I decided to get RID of some large old files - it turns out - the MORE I DELETE THE LESS SPACE IS ACTUALLY FREED UP!

As illogical as it may seem, I'm not on crack!

Clearly this must be due to some sort of virus since I happened to have carried out a full scan scan my system (just felt like doing it, not suspecting anything - I have a good habit of scanning every couple of months!) yesterday using AVAST and nothing turned up. However when I did a preboot scan two or three trojans came up which I deleted - only for this problem to come up.

What do I do?

I now have 0 bits of free space - none whatsoever on my C drive.

I neither have a BACKUP copy or recover disk created because I was unable to create a HP Elitbook recovery disk due to some technical issues.

Any assistance would be kindly appreciated as I have some very important work to do and can't AFFORD to waste days on end trying to sort this out - I might just throw it out the window on to my car!

Thank you once again Without the Recovery CD your not in a good spot...
Order one from HP.You can delete all you want but a few things need to be considered with Windows 7.
If Volume Shadow Copy is enabled all your files including ones that are deleted still have old versions of them retained on the system. Plus System restore is part of that and that too is taking up space. So you can free up some space by throttling that back or off and emptying your recycle bin and running disk cleanup. Even turning off hibernation will free up disk space. There are a ton of things you can do. I am sure you Google searched for some ideas before you posted your question here.

Solve : Hardware or Software ????

Answer»

I am running Windows 7 Home Edition, an old celeron processor, about 3.06 ghz I believe and all updates are current. A month or so ago I started having issues when shutting down and restarting the computer. When I restart I have noticed that the Start Menu is open, stays open for a while, then disappears. I don't think this has always been the case. The biggest problem is that when I try to click on an icon on the desktop, like My Computer for instance, about 5 or more of the folder or icon will open up. The mouse does not function properly as well. For instance if you just happen to drag the mouse over an icon or folder, it tries to open up the folder many times. The only thing I have found that fixes this PROBLE is to type something into the search box on the start menu and let it search for it...it can be chkdsk, or you can type in jibberesh such as kkkkkkkkk and it will fix the problem of the multiple page/folders opening up when u click on them. It's like the search function needs to "do something" before things return to normal. I've also notice that there is a problem most of the time when trying to schedule chkdsk. Most of the time upon restarting the computer I get a message that chkdsk has been scheduler, and then below that it says it's been cancelled and it will not run. I think I've managed to get it to run once like that, and have no idea why it worked that time. Not sure if the two problems are connected or not. It's an old computer . I've tried lots of fixes...sfc, chkdsk, changes to the registry, with no results. Thanks in advance.!) What do you mean "changes to the registry"? EXACTLY what did you do?

2) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

3) Have you run a full system scan with both your AV and MalwareBytes? If not, please do so now.

4) How does it run in safe mode? The change to the registry had nothing to do with the problems since the problems were there already. I'm sure lots of changes have been made as far as programs and software since the problem first occured. I'm not sure of the exact date it started. I have removed all unneccary programs from my computer, run a full virus scan with AVG and MalwareBytes. No VIRUSES, some adware I removed, no help. Doesn't work any better in safe mode. Ran 2 free registry cleaners that revoved lots of unneccesary files in the registry..still no help. Is there nowhere I can go on here to stop the Start Menu from opening when the computer boots up? Any setting in the services area that controls that? That may solve my problem, since typing in that search box fixes the problem immediately.Registry cleaners CAUSE problems, they do not cure them. And I'd still like to know what registry changes you made. The likelihood is that your system is now in worse shape than before you started trying to fix it.

If you want to try to stop the start menu from opening you can try this procedure:

Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not USE msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

Ok I tried all the suggestions and none of them worked. Finally I started thinking about how the problem always immediately corrected when I TYPED something into the search box below the Start Menu. So I started thinking maybe it was keyboard related. Sure enough I sign on, and as usual the Start menu is popped up and if you try to do anything it goes nutso just like I stated in the first post. So I decided to press the "Search" button on the keyboard and see what happened. It fixed the problem immediately, just like the typing did. So then I decided to try another keyboard, booted up, no start menu popped up, everything worked perfectly. This also solved the problem of chkdsk not working when I had scheduled it at boot time. I have restarted several times, EVEN shut down completely and restarted, scheduling chkdsk a couple of those times and everything works perfectly.

Solve : Deleting files does not make the file disappear until I refresh?

Hi, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. The problem is when I try to delete a file (not a system file), the file would not disappear. Deleting it again would bring out a message, "Could not find this item. This is no longer located in E:/ or wherever the location of the file is." The deleted file would only disappear if I manually refresh, hit F5 or go out of the folder and return to it. Its getting to be annoying especially when I delete a lot of files. Can anyone help? Creating new files or folders doesnt PRODUCE same problem, only when deleting. There are more important things to WORRY about.

But maybe you can advertise for a personal assistant.
This would be a SKILLED person that can find the F5 key for you.

Wow, thanks for the sage advice. Just tell me if this is a normal occurrence and I'll just shut up. Do you need to always manually hit Refresh just to delete a file? The behavior is due to Windows Explorer. The file is deleted, but there is some latency for WE to refresh the directory.

Have you tried drag and droop to delete files?

EDIT: I can not duplicate what you describe. It only takes a fraction of a second, unless Windows is also doing another task very heavy on the CPU. In that case it can take longer, but eventually does refresh.

What conditions bring on this failure to auto-refresh the current directory display when you delete files? Do you have lots of other tasks RUNNING at the same time?
Go to Tools/Folder Options/ General Tab, and at the bottom, in the 'Navigation Pane', make sure 'Show all folders' and 'Automatically expand to current folder' are checked. I'm not running a lot of processes when this happens, maybe 1 or 2 programs that are open. Sometimes its just RANDOM. One day its fine, some days it happens. I tried this one solution in another forum which involves modifying this registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Wow6432Node\CLSID\{BDEADE7F-C265-11D0-BCED-00A0C90AB50F}\Instance]. For some people it works but for some it doesnt.I have something similar on my computer, not only when deleting but also when creating new files/folders it may take a few minutes for them to appear. I just use f5 or back-click and *refresh*. Just letting you know you are not alone. This happened to me, and i thought of it as just normal. I dismissed it, and just dealt with it

Solve : Upgrading Windows 7?

Answer»

I will be getting a refurbished Lenovo desktop, Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, as my 2.5 year old ASUS, after many crashes, finally bit the dust. The ASUS had a Vista OS that Best Buy upgraded to Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL and I have the upgrade disk. Would it be possible for me to use that disk to upgrade the new Lenovo to Windows 7 Professional from Home Premium? Also, if this is possible, would I make the backup disks AFTER installing the Windows 7 Pro or before while it is still Home Premium? Thank youwether you are allowed to install W7 Pro on another computer depends on wether it was a 1 PC version, in which case it has been used, or a full retail version.

If you have the codes then you can TRY it at your own risk

I would make backup disks whilst still W7 Home so I could get it back there if the upgrade didn't work and a set of W7 Pro afterwards if it did
I looked all over the box that it came in and I can't find anything that says that I can't install it on another computer. I have the Product Key sticker, a little handbook with installation instructions and 2 disks, 1 for 32 bit systems and 1 for 64 bit systems. It says that it was designed as an upgrade for Windows Vista, however there are also instructions for using it to upgrade from Windows XP, also. Where would I be able to find out whether I'd be doing something illegal or not? Thanks for your helphttp://www.pcworld.com/article/174710/microsoft_says_windows_7_install_workaround_is_legal.htmlThe EULA for Windows limits installation to one working computer. If you try to install it on a second system you will be in violation of that EULA. The link quoted above simply says you can use an upgrade disc to perform a clean install, but it does NOT allow installation to more than one system."One working computer". Is that the key? My old computer is no longer working, I've used Eraser on the Document files and I assume I could use it on the OS??? It is just so unstable that it would no longer be useful to anyone. It will be going to the local landfill recycling bin after I remove a few parts that I think I might need in the newer one.

I read the hyperlink provided by Jason2074, and felt like I'd just fallen down a rabbit hole to the IRS. One paragraph seems to contradict another, but you can't go by me because my comprehension isn't exactly stellar. If you uninstall Windows from the old system or trash the old system then YES, you can legally install Windows on a different system.Thank you, Allan. Can I get rid of the OS by going to Drives C & D (partitioned) and ask it to Reformat? I don't know what you mean "go to drives c & d". You cannot format the system partition from within the OS, only at boot using either a Windows disc or some SORT of utility disc with a format utilityIf you go to Computer and then Right click on say "C" drive it will bring up a small window that the last item is Properties and a few lines above that it says, "Format", so I assumed, like when we had to format floppies or reformat them to use them over, it would wipe out all information on that drive?? Other than thinking that was the way to do it, I'm not sure as to how to remove the Windows OS from the hard drive. Then why advise ?Quote

Solve : Windows programs in general.?

Answer»

Hey all, I have noticed that some programs will slow down over time. I tried doing a Google search on it, but there was only stuff about why Windows as a whole slows down. So I was wondering if anyone knew why individual programs may slow down after awhile?

    Examples:
    • I created an image in GIMP, rotated it by twelve degrees, and saved it as another image (I was creating a "Loading" type .gif @30FPS for a one second animation), and after a few times, it would slow down to the point where GIMP would crash.
    • Antivirus scans seem to slow down the longer they run

That's all I have from personal experiences that I've recently noticed, so if anyone else has noticed it too, it'd be nice to know that I'm not just going crazy or not thinking about it enough.

Additional information that someone may find useful: 3GB RAM, 2.20GHz dual core processor (Intel Core 2 Duo t7500), 32-bit Vista
Usually it's because of bad resource management. The typical cause is when a program has a "cache" of information.

A very good example of this is Firefox. FF's memory usage balloons like the girth of a pregnant sow after you start it. The primary cause is simply that FF cache's too much information- all the tabs keep track of a lot of information on previous pages, and keep that in memory, "just in case" you go back. GIMP keeps track of your actions for Undo buffers; usually every change you make can result in a complete copy of the bitmap itself being copied into RAM (Photoshop, in contrast, saves the specific occurrence that was performed in a reversible manner so it can be undone, but without requiring the entire image to be saved).

For AV scans, as the scan progresses the AV program will have loaded more data; as it looks through files, it has to load them all into memory, examine them, and remember anything it found as well as what it found in them, meaning their memory usage goes up.

Sometimes time isn't even the variable. For quite a long time I've had this issue with photoshop where every tool would take about 4 seconds before it would start to "work"; zooms, brushes, etc. I thought it was because of the above and PS was just being sluggish, since restarting it fixed the problem.

But I managed to figure out that the true cause was Photoshop's dealing with removable devices. Occasionally I would save to a removable device, and when you save to a drive Photoshop for whatever reason keeps a lock on the drive (in my case, "safely remove" would insist the drive was in use). if I removed the drive myself, Photoshop would become sluggish. I don't know why, specifically, but a guess would be that it was trying to access the removed device for whatever reason. Similar things might cause it in other applications.

For the most part though this type of thing is either because of a genuine bug (such as a memory leak in the program) or because of bad caching of data, which is really just another name for a memory leak.

Huh...interdasting. I should have watched how much memory the AV scan was using when it started, and how much it was using after it started noticeably slowing down. With GIMP, I checked it when it was slowing down, and again after a fresh restart of the program, and there was hardly a difference. So that was kinda odd. I didn't think about caching. And when you're consecutively making thirty copies of an uncompressed image, things will add up quick. I would think some programs would do a slightly better job at (What memory clean up is called in Java) garbage clean up.

I know I was going to say something more, but I don't remember; so I'll just leave this here.

Twilight is best pony. Re: memory usage, Task manager doesn't show you everything. Because of the way memory is managed there are quite a few values that one would need to inspect. Also, some programs "preallocate" a bunch of memory for some reason, but they will only really slow down when more of it is used. (the "fail" of this is that they are trying to do the task that the memory allocator is supposed to be doing).

A good tool for this sort of analysis is Process Explorer. It can provide columns for various memory information on each process- Minimum and Maximum Working Set, Current Working Set, Shared Bytes, Private Bytes, and the number of GDI and USER handles... which actually brings me to another common cause: leaked handles.

With Windows drawing, things are usually drawn using Pens and Brushes. When a APPLICATION uses a brush, it has to remember to delete it at some point; same with Pens, bitmaps, etc. If it doesn't clean it up, it leaks that handle. Pens and Brushes (and I believe Fonts) are GDI resources. In older versions of windows, there weren't very many handles to go around and you could easily tell when a program was misbehaving because everything would be affected (Windows might start drawing things in the default font, as one example).

The thing that makes restarting fix this is that With Windows NT, process TERMINATION will properly destroy all the leaked handles, too.

Leaked handles over time can cause slowdown because operations on other handles now cause GDI32 or User32 to sort through the leaked handles, because as far as they are concerned they weren't deleted and therefore they must still be being used for something.

Process Explorer can show GDI and user objects; I believe Task Manager can as well, so you can take a look at that next time and compare the numbers.

The Device thing for me has always been a common cause, though I've had Visual Studio become unresponsive after a few days of uptime that can only be fixed with a restart (though it is often using 1 or 2 GB of RAM in private bytes, too; probably something storing a lot of data (I blame Resharper).

Process Explorer. Not trying to be pedantic, just that there is a Process Viewer program too, but it's quite limited in it's capabilities.

Quite. We have continued on the discussion that REVOLVES around our preference regarding Neotenous multi-hued sapient female horses, unicorns and pegasi suffering from dwarfism, mixed most oddly with discussion about various lower-level windows semantics and various useful utilities that can be used to view such things.

Sort of like that time I explained the concepts of Object Oriented Programming using character references to cartooned equines. You know, the base class cEarthPony is specialized into both cUnicorn and cPegasus classes; which have composite cHorn and cWing aggregate classes respectively; cAlicorn naturally uses multiple derivation to be both a Unicorn and Pegasus, and having the composite members of both. This introduces something a problem since there could be some vtable confusion as the Alicorn class now has two copies of the virtual dispatch table from the base cEarthPony class, since both the cPegasus and cUnicorn classes hold a reference to the base classes virtual dispatch table, as well as holding duplicate member variables for each. In this case, the cAlicorn class inherits the indirect base class cEarthPony once through the cPegasus class and once through the Unicorn class. This can be ambiguous because two subobjects of the cEarthPony class exist and both are accessible from the cAlicorn class; meaning that the actual virtual dispatch table that is acquired can depend on the type of the variable being used to access it. For C++ (which is the only language in common use that supports multiple inheritance) the way this is mitigated is through the concept of a virtual base class. but this needs to be done with the cUnicorn and cPegasus classes:

Code: [Select]class cEarthPony { /* ...stuff... eye color, mane and tail color, etc */ };
class cPegasus : virtual public cEarthPony { /* ...aggregate wing composites, stuff like wing POWER, etc. */ };
class cUnicorn : virtual public cEarthPony { /* ...Unicorn specific stuff, Horn aggregate, magic aura colour, etc. */ };
class cAlicorn : public cPegasus, public cUnicorn { /* ... Alicorn specific stuff, like whether they have a crown or not.*/ };
this will ensure that the Alicorn only has one copy of the inherited members from the cEarthPony base class.

Naturally how some characters fit into this heirarchy raises a bit of a challenge, particularly Discord, but it's no worse than the common "Animal Kingdom" example that most tutorials use. And it's far less boring for those familiar with the subject.

Solve : desktop is scrambled, fragmented, broken-looking?

Answer»

Hi, I've tried searching both this forum and Google, and haven't come up with anything.

I've attached the images that hopefully illustrate the problem, but I'll describe it anyway.

I have installed Windows Vista SP1 onto an older system, though the system was originally built around the same time Vista was released (June 2006).

The specs are as follows:
AMD X2 3800+ s939
ASUS A8V-MX motherboard (with empty PCI-X slot, using onboard VGA);
2x512mb Kingston DDR 400 RAM
2x512mb DDR 400 RAM (another brand, unsure of type)
Creative Audigy Soundblaster 2Zs
80GB Seagate PATA hard drive
400w Sparkle power supply

The installation went fine. But as soon as it boots into Windows, for the first time and every time afterward, the desktop is totally scrambled looking. It's almost like there's a prism on it refracting the output in some places.

The weirdest part is that it's fine in SAFE Mode, as well as if I lock it, or hit CTRL ALT DELETE to bring up the task manager (though upon selecting the task manager and returning to the desktop the desktop is screwed up).

I put in the installation CD for the motherboard, but I can't view it on the desktop, and when I try in Safe Mode I get dialogue boxes telling me that it can't access a variety of registry-looking files. I don't know if this is a problem it WOULD have with Vista to begin with, because the CD was manufactured for XP. I checked the ASUS site, but there isn't much driver support for Vista.

Any suggestions or assistance would be sincerely appreciated, thanks.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Asus doesn't have vista drivers for your machine. Your motherboard has the VIA K8M800 chipset. Let's see if the driver from the chip manufacturer will work.

Go to this page:
http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp

Choose your version of windows, then under step 3 choose the Hyperion Pro (4 in 1) chipset driver. thanks JJ 3000, I've downloaded the file and put it on a USB stick, but I can't run the setup program.

It's impossible to see what I'm doing in "normal" Windows, so I'm booting to safe mode, but I'm getting this error message when I try to run the setup program:
"1607 UNABLE to install installshield scripting runtime"

I've tried right clicking and "Run as Administrator" but I get the same error message. I've tried enabling the Administrator account from the Command prompt, (using these instructions: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/enable-the-hidden-administrator-account-on-windows-vista/), but the option doesn't come up when I log off/switch user (I don't know if that's an issue with safe mode or not).

*** I just tried both of the above on a "normal" Windows boot, and neither worked. I tried to enable the Administrator account, which did not work. I then tried to run the driver Setup file, which returned the following message:
"Sorry, the install wizard can't find the supported hardware in your system. You should check your hardware and try again. Please press OK to terminate the install wizard."

It also returned a message saying that the Hyperion software installation was interrupted before it could COMPLETE, and did not complete successfully.

Did I fail to do something? This seems like a really absurd problem to be having ...

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Your graphics chipset is failing or there is a problem with the driver in 3-D modes. Aero glass uses the 3-D accelerated modes of your graphics adapter; the Control-Alt-Del and locked screens switch out of 3-D accelerated mode, which is likely why it appears fine to you.

I suspect it's a hardware problem. Drivers probably couldn't screw up Vertex Buffers this badly.

I would suggest disabling Aero. If you cannot do this because of the distortion, you can do it in safe mode:

1.Open Notepad
2.Paste the following into it:

Code: [Select]Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM]
"Composition"=dword:00000000

Choose to save this file. Change the "Save as type" drop down and choose "All files (*.*)" then give the file a .reg extension (eg. "disableglass.reg").

Double click the file, accept the confirmation, and Reboot normally. Aero Glass will be disabled, which should hopefully clear up your display problems.

BC_Programmer, thank you very much for the suggestion, but unfortunately it does not appear to have made a difference. I did as you outlined, and was informed that the instructions(? I paraphrase) had been added to the Registry, but when I rebooted it still looked the same (ie, distorted). Are you sure you have a ASUS A8V-MX?

Did you get any errors during the Vista installation?

Where did this Vista disk come from?

Solve : Application sound goes down when USB device plugged in?

Answer»

Hello!

My computer
Video card ATI Radeon HD 7750
Processor AMD Phenom 2 quad core
Ram 16 gigs
Motherboard MSI 870A-G54
Power supply Corsair GS 600
OS: DUAL Boot Windows 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 10.04

Clarification
There are three types of volume controls I will MENTION, so here I will clarify...Volume Mixer control is the one in the system tray....when you choose Open Volume Mixer it shows all programs that have sound has it's own volume control. Application Volume would be the volume control in the application...like the volume on YouTube videos or on VLC/WMP. Speaker/Headphone volume is the knob on the physical speakers/headphones. This problem only happens in Windows 7, not Ubuntu.

The Problem
This is another strange problem of mine. When listening to music, or watching movies, I usually keep the Speaker/Headphone volume knob turned all the way up. I also keep the Volume Mixer at 100%, except for System Sounds, which I keep at about 15%, otherwise the "plug in/unplug" sound or any other system sound is very loud. So I adjust the volume in the Application Window.

Under my Volume Mixer in the system tray, I have two sections, one labeled Devices and one Applications. Under Devices there is Speakers (100%), and under applications System Sounds (15%) and whatever I am playing (chrome 100%, VLC 100%, Steam 100%).

But when I plug in any USB item, (so far my 2 externals, my phone, my music player, and my tablet), the "plug in" system sound will go off quietly, but then any other sound playing, in the Volume Mixer Control, will move to 15%. I have to open the Volume Mixer and change the volume back to 100% for the application. Same for any system sound that may occur (like those error beeps or anything else).

So if I had Chrome, VLC, or Steam (or any combination) playing sounds, before a system sound, the Volume Mixer would show the volume at 100%, but after a system sound goes off, it moves to 15%, the System Volume.

I found This which says to change the OPTIONS under Communication in Sound Properties window to "Do Nothing" which I have done, but the problem persists.

The past
This started happening just two days ago, my computer restarted while I was gone, and it no longer recognized my externals. In the Computer window, it would show the drive letter, but not the space it had, and I could not access the device. I unplugged and replugged the externals, and they appeared properly. I did a disc check on both the externals (made sure to check "Fix file system Errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors") and nothing bad came up, and nothing changed. This is when the system sounds began really loud, plugging in the externals. So I lowered the volume in the Volume Mixer, and now any other sounds lower to the System sound settings when the system plays a sound.

A weird bit : When I start the computer, it shows all USB devices plugged in, on the BIOS screen before I boot into a OS. The externals now no longer display the name properly(They used to say WD Mass Storage or something similar), it is just a set of random letters and numbers. The letters change each time. For example, the last time I restarted they were ô2gūǫ and ǵõj4: . It has not changed start-up in any other way, and I can still access and use the drives.

Other bits of information
The external names do not display properly in BIOS start-up on my other computer. My other computer is a Copaq Presario C700 laptop running Windows 7 64bit.
Even when the drives are not plugged in the sounds go weird.
When I plug the drives into the computer with the sound error, they say I must format the drive to use it. I do not get that message on my laptop.
I am not sure if the drives are even part of the problem, it just seems coincidental that the drives went weird the same day the sound did.
The sound does not go weird in Ubuntu, only in Windows. I do not really want to reinstall if I do not need to.
Uninstalled/reinstalled audio drivers, no change.
I have an old Motherboard that is unused for other error reasons, switched that in and it still reads the external names weird in start up.
Switched out the USB cords used on the externals, no change.

My main questions
So! Anyway to change the system sounds to quiet, like before? Or to get the application Volume Mixer to stay the same? If there is some sort of way to turn off all system sounds, I would go for that.
Also, should I format the drives? Or just let them be?

Thank you for any help!
Reformatted the hard drives, and now they display correctly in the BIOS screen, but the sound problem persists.

Until I went to System Sounds (where you can change the sound scheme) and selected No Sounds. Now no sounds play, and the Volume Mixer stays at the number I place it.

Yay! Sort of! Still have no idea what happened. And if I enable sounds, it still does the same error...but I do not mind having no Windows beeps anymore.

Marking as (sort of) solved.Quote

That is not the way to solve most PROBLEMS. Unless you really need to reset the hard drive.

You can change the system sounds. You can create hour own, or import a set of sounds. You can lower the volume of each sound by used a sound editor, such as Aucacity, to reduce the level of all the important system sounds. First make a backup of each sound first.

Look at this:

Maybe you can find a softer set of sounds.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 10, 2012, 06:59:01 PM

Thanks! I never thought of changing the sounds using Audacity. When I get the time, I think that is what I will do.

Not sure why they suddenly became loud in the first place, THOUGH. Or why the volume control would change when one sounds.

I know, but I could not really find any other way...the drives would tell me I needed to "format before I could use it" each time I plugged them in, and the names were displaying weird in the BIOS screen. I figured, why not? If the external drives no longer have any problem, you did the right thing.

but when the win updates is not started after making internet connection....i manually checked it.......
the below attached box opens......

i didn't done any install or uninstall.....or any other change in startup since last successful updates.......
i am using a dial up connection...and think that it can't affect at least on speed prospective......
please help...

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]As i'm sure you know dial up is a seldom used internet connection anymore (except where no other option exists). Undoubtedly the slowness of the DATA transfer plus random connection interruptions common to dial up can be very adverse to large downloads (which updates often are), Add to that that i believe modern operating systems such as win 7 are not designed around using dial up. Also there are issues with certain modems when it comes to integration with certain operating systems. If you do have an option to go to some form of high speed service that would be my 1st recommendation. However failing that here is an anecdote from another web site involving the same issue and how it got resolved. It may or may not be applicable to your SITUATION. good luck.truenorth
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1423135You're infected...
Visit our Malware section for a cleanup.thanks truenorth and patio.....
but in my thinking service can not be launched means something messed the registries.....and dial up modem is not a big prob as per my needs.....it worked well with other requirments.....other than this wiered day.......

normally i am not a messer of registry values.....
but i think my pc optimizer so called advance system care 5.4 do it when it performs scans.....as reg cleaning and reg defrag.....

may be there will be a problam....if so please guide me to the exact registry value......
thanks in advance.....I do not think many (if any) CH members are going to assist you with alterations to the O/S registry. The prevailing feeling by experienced members (particularly for most computer users) would be to NOT fool around in the registry. That would also include NOT using any programs that tout part or all of their actions to be in regards to registry "cleaners". If you have such a program installed were i you i would remove it forthwith or even fifthwith. truenorthTry removing AVG and Iobit as suggested by truenorth. Download and Install Microsoft Security Essential as your antivirus and Malwarebytes and then use a full system scan alternately on both. Make sure they are updated before scanning. RPC local service startup service just needed to be SET to Manual. Sory for being so lazy.......in fact it was my work which let me do so.....
thx guys i hav uninstalled the avg internet security 2011....problam not solved....again installed mse ....updated scanned full system....problam was same.....
uninstalled advance system care as suggested......none good......downloaded malwarebyte scanned ........no more to help myself......

So i again installed advance system care ....used it's win fix menu......fix windows update menu......and all gone too smooth.......
all things are going too well.......

But one noticable thing ....i got that my system is running much smoother from before..........perheps that's effect of removing AVG .........the system resourses are now more free.......
but on security aspects.......mse is much less than avg internet security........but more handy.....

Thanks xperts.....Glad to see your up and running well again.Would really urge you if it is available (particularly DSL from a cost point of view) to get high speed if you can. It will greatly enhance your computer experience and once you have it you will never want to go back to dial-up.truenorththanks for your warm advice truenorth....
i'll look for that....
but i am not glad at mse at least for it's slow speed scaning......tooo slow than avg....

else is good.......
Quote

but i am not glad at mse at least for it's slow speed scaning
I've used MSE on my Win 7 system and seems to be far better to their predecessor and more likely to AVG. You might want to install on-demand scanners - malwarebytes and superantispyware. i have already downloaded malwarebyte....
that's nice
and going on well....
yup 1st time scan was too slow.....but after first scan ,when the FILES are cached with it, it's comparabl to the avg.....yes sir yuo are right......
thanks for advice.....

Solve : Video audio problems?

Answer»

I have a Kodak EASY share M575 camera that I use to film videos with. It has always worked well for me, except for last NIGHT. I uploaded some video to my laptop as always, but when I went to edit them, the audio was basically GONE on all of them. I hear it fine when I watch them on my camera, but not after I UPLOAD it. I know it's my laptop because i can hear the audio on another laptop. Do you know why my laptop won't play the new video audio? I have a Compaq laptop with Vista. The old files all work in everything. It is only the new files that are MUTED. I connect the camera with a usb, like i did for the working old files. The new files are muted in everything, not just the editor. The audio is automatically muted on the new ones when I upload them.

Solve : Icon changed on Microsoft Outlook?

Answer»

I'm not sure how this has happened (probably by one of my sons) but the Microsoft Outlook icon (which was on the bottom toolbar on the desktop) disappeared.
When I tried to find the icon it was nowhere to be seen so I looked in the office folder, with in programs (from the start menu).
To my surprise the orange icon had gone and in its place was the icon that denotes NOTHING is associated with the program (see attachment below).
I have no idea how to restore this.
Can anyone help?
Thanks

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]Have you tried this

Right click each faulty icon
select "Properties"
click "Change icon"
in the file browse dialog that OPENS, navigate to the Microsoft Office folder under Program Files
select Outlook.exe as the source of the icon, and then select the right icon from the set that appears in a box.

Hi Salmon,

I tried this but the button to 'change icon' is greyed out and I can not click it.
I also notied that 'start in' box is empty ?

Are you using an administrative account? The 'start in' box is on the shortcut tab within properties
Yes, I am an administrator.Quote from: dgreen on June 10, 2012, 09:14:13 AM

OK, I believe that's normal. I have Office 2007 installed on my Windows 7 system and my Start in box for Outlook is empty. For some info on this, see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/283065Thanks.
Any idea how to get the icon back?If you have a Restore Point from a date before this happened, you could restore your system from it. Here's a reference on this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/system-restore

Another option: http://www.intowindows.com/how-to-rebuild-icon-cache-in-windows-7-to-repair-icons/I just did a system restore but the icon is still wrong !
I also tried deleting the iconcache but nothing changed..... For some strange and unknown reason the icon has come back.... spooky !
Thanks everyone for your help!

Solve : I5- 2500K overclocking problems?

Answer»

Hello,
I am having problems overclocking my processor and would like any one's opinion about the matter.

Gigabyte z68XP-UD3
i5 2500K
8GB 1333MHZ ram
gigabyte ODIN GT 550W
ATI HD 7850

my problem is this:

Whenever i try to overclock the processor, i cannot do so without it saying "the sytem ecountered a problem because of overclocking or changing of the voltages" (something similar to that). If i overlock from 3.3-3.4, it WILL give me this error no matter what. i CANNOT change the voltage without encountering this error, UNLESS i set the voltage to "auto". If i set the voltage "auto" then i can change the multiplier to whatever i please and it will not give me this error message. HOWEVER, upon restarting the pc again, (this could be days later, or hours later)- but upon the NEXT restart, the PC will have reverted to its original voltage and frequency settings, suggesting that it was infact NOT stable at the prevoius settings, even though it did not give me error messages.

WEIRd thing is, if I set the voltage manually, and simply pretend not to see the error messages when restarting after overlcocking, the computer will run PRIME95 and other stress tests perfectly for the required time.

EXAMPLE: i set voltage to 1.32 and frequency to 4.5GHZ and was given the error message, but then ran prime for and hour and a half with no problems and another stress test too. was called burner or something. HOWEVER, upon the NEXT restart of my pc, the settings have reverted again to default.

the ONLY way i can force my PC to remember what i have set the frequency and voltage to is if I enable "turbo-core" and individually overclock each core to 4.5, and leave the overall multiplier at 3.3. i then manually set the voltage to 1.32, and im given error message upon restart, but then stress tests are fine and settings are saved upon next restart.

Now i wouldnt really care but, i experiencing STUTTERING problems in quite a few games. if the fps drops below 60, many games stutter and appear much worse than the FPS suggests. in WoW ill have 50fps but it will look like 20. in skyrim its simply unplayable.

Note: dont think its cmos battery cause it remembers all other settings i change, just not frq and volt.

any opinions and help would be greatly appreciated!

thank you Quote

I am having problems overclocking my processor and would like any one's opinion about the matter.
Really! Who ever told you that overclocking is a easy, safe pursuit.
With any electronic device, including personal computers, there are about 4 or 5 main choices to make. Here is a List:

1. Low entry COST
2. Long life.
3. High performance
4. Easy to use
5. Very reliable

Many times one gets 3 out of 5. If one were to get 4 out of 5, that good.

But are you looking for 5 out of 5? I can't do nit. So I will be watching this thread to see if the experts can do 5 out of 5 and violate the rules set by the manufacturer.

What I am saying is that overclocking is, by definition, and experimental use of a motherboard. Not a normal use. Yet you talk like you want everything else to remain the same as to reliability, ease of use and so on.

Maybe somebody will prove me wrong.

@ geek.

I'm sorry if my post was long and confusing, I don't mean to suggest that everything should work perfectly in my overclocked system, and I understand the implications of overclocking.

In a nutshell, I want to know why my particular processor cannot be overclocked if turbo-boost is disabled, when, according to most guides, turbo-boost is usually to be disabled when overclocking.

Perhaps the OP wants to overclock in order to maximize the potential of his system... low entry cost, high performance... Some people can't afford higher end systems and thus find a good incentive to overclock if the chances are high that they will be able to overclock to a decent performance level...

You mention the BIOS not saving settings on reboot... I have a hunch it's related to the infamous http://www.overclock.net/t/1034724/gigabyte-p67-z68-boot-cycling-problem P67/Z68 boot cycling problem, where settings are not saved after reboot and where sometimes the system will just fail to POST out of the blue..

I've had stuttering issues before when I overclocked my E3200 to 3.6 GHz, at 1.392 VCore, and I assumed it was RAM/Mobo limited because I have tested it in a P43 board which pushed it well over 4 GHz without issues... BTW my RAM dividers would only go down to 3:5

http://isiforums.net/f/showthread.php/4831-Finally-stopped-the-stutters-i7-2600k/page2
Perhaps this may help too... I'm honestly not sure too about turbo boost, because usually one doesn't want turbo-boost interfering with your overclocked settings and throttling your processor...Some more detail is needed. What CPU is installed?
Quote
Gigabyte z68XP-UD3
Some new Intel CPU's can not really be overclocked. So to answer your question we need the documentation for both the mobo and the CPU.
Geek.. er.. at the risk of sounding impertinent, have you read the topic? i5-2500K... the K is supposed to be an enthusiast version (unlocked CPU multiplier) which allows it to be overclocked without raising the FSB...

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3892
Here's the OP's motherboard, it does provide documentation for all the features that you would need....

Also, turbocabbage, try SETTING Load Line Calibration to 10, it eliminates VDroop that may contribute to your system instability...Transfusion, Thank you. My ignorance. Does that mean it will overclock any CPU that can run in the motherboard.
I thought a Sandy Bridge should not overclock. But I am often wrong.transfusion thanks very much for the help. I try the load line calibration setting at 10, but still error message:(.
what is very strange is that when i run stress tests, they do not fail. which implies that the error message is infact incorrect, because the PC apprently IS stable at the current voltage and frequency!

Its all very confusing hah.

@ geek. Well the sandybridges with the 'k' letter are the ones that can be overclocked. Although im not 100% clued up about it, my understanding is that the procesors with the 'K' are aimed at those buyers who want to overclock their processors much further than the stock frequency. the i5-2500K is renowned for being one of the best overclocking chips around. Some people are even able to increase the frequency to 4.0GHZ without incresing the voltage at all and achieve a stable system. that's why im a bit upset that mine is giving me error messages when i try to overclock, because i FEEL that I have not got value for money if I cant overclock it.

thank you for the input GUYS. continuing to try solve this! It's okay, we all make mistakes sometime....
No, of course not *all* sandy bridge CPUs are overclockable... like the i3 2120 for example, where one can only increase the base clock by a tiny 4 points at most. Any further will definitely cause instability. Not all mobos support overclocking either...
With the i5 2400, people have had mixed results.
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cpus/2011/01/03/intel-sandy-bridge-review/14 Why do you need to OC an i5 should be the question ? ?
Is it because people say it can be done ? ? Or is it regret over not getting the i7 ? ?@ Patio.

I built a gaming PC. the i5 is a faster chip than the i7 for gaming.
the i7 is more expensive because of other features (such as hyper threading) that do not affect gaming performance.

WHY do i want to overclock the i5-2500K?
If you did some basic research on the i5-2500k i think you would see why i want to overclock it.

turbocabbage, I would suggest going to overclockers.com if you want to get to know more of the performance computing community, and I hate to sound disparaging but seems like some aren't really in favor of overclocking because of instability... truth is, other parts will wear out long before an OC'ed CPU will, provided you don't do a ridiculous >=1.4V overclock without adequate cooling.
With that over, I do think we should try to help turbocabbage to the best of our efforts, he does sound pretty reasonable.... the i7 is just minutely more powerful in terms of gaming http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/287?vs=288 because of superior single threaded performance. If not, Intel would be cannibalizing sales from itself!

I would suggest checking the simplest things, such as whether your motherboard BIOS is up to the latest revision, whether your 12V rail(s) are stable with a multimeter (http://www.techrepublic.com/article/power-supply-troubleshooting-with-a-multimeter/1056686), do a few more stress tests on your system (while overclocked), such as Memtest86+/Furmark, and if possible, compare results with a known working motherboard of the same chipset.thanks for the help transfusion Footnote.
Intel is now using overclocking as a market thing. They even have an insurance policy in case the CPU burns itself to death.

Intel offers CPU insurance, will replace your burnt-out overclocked ...

Solve : Converting JCL to Windows Batch Script (DOS)?

Answer»

Hi Team,

I am converting JCL to Windows Batch Script (DOS prompt). Can you please let me know how to proceed for it.
Also, I would like to know the Windows Batch Script (DOS) equivalent command for:

1. SORT
2. IEBCOPY
3. IEBGENER
4. IDCAMS
5. IEFBR14
6. IKJFT01
7. Passing the PARM parameters
8. Symbolic parameters etc...

If some one has done it earlier then can you please give the sample JCL to Windows Batch Script.

Thanks in advance for your kind help.I have been working on a Mainframe for 13 years and hav ebeen writing batch files for about the same amount of time and what you are asking would be a very extreme challenge if not impossible. Some of the those programs I don't even recognize so it is probably specific to your system.Hi Squashman,

The programs which I have asked are very common in Mainframe JCL.
Quote

IEBCOPY is a data set utility that is used to copy or merge members between one or more partitioned data sets, or partitioned data sets extended (PDSEs), in FULL or in part.

More specifically, this utility is commonly used for several purposes:

To copy selected (or all) members from one partitioned data set to ANOTHER.
To copy a partitioned data set into a unique sequential format known as an unloaded partitioned data set. As a sequential data set it can be WRITTEN on tape, sent by FTP, or manipulated as a simple sequential data set.
To read an unloaded partitioned data set (which is a sequential file) and recreate the original partitioned data set. Optionally, only selected members might be used.
To compress partitioned data sets (in place) to recover lost space.

Just one example: Programming is not Lego. You can't just find equivalents at the "command" level. A PC is not a mainframe, and the notion of a "partitioned data set" is not something that PC PROGRAMMERS are likely to be familiar with.
Hi Salmon,

What you said is very true...as it is difficult to find out the euivalent command for these on windows DOS. But what I need is the work around of these utilities on windows command prompt.

Thanks.

Solve : Need help with BSOD?

Answer»

I've been at my computer for 20 HOURS and I'm about to throw it away..

so yesterday I bought an Intel 520, 120gb SSD, I took out my regular harddrive put in the SSD which showed up as it was suppose to, and I installed Win7 Home Premium on it..

Here are my current specs:

AMD Athlon Phenom II x4 3.2ghz black edition
X-FI soundcard something
DFI lanParty DK 790FXB-M3H5 motherboard
4x2gh DDR3

this is where happiness turns into 20 hours of crying and screaming..

as expected Win7 found 80 something updates, and everything started out fine, I even experienced the improved speed of SSD but then at update 51, can't remember which but KB21045 something it stalls, for 50-60 minutes it just can't seem to finish that update, only result was to reboot
alright weird.. so I didn't want a faulty win7 on my machine so I formatted the drive and installed again, and went back to windows update
this time while updating I get a BSOD, saying "an error has occured that has forced your computer to shutdown"
and then it SUGGEST I do 'silly' things LIKE uninstall Antivirus which I of course don't even have as its a fresh install..

When I try to install updates, like e.g. tried to install Framework Net4, it freezes and gives me a BSOD..
I'm actually writing from that computer right now, from a half broken windows that refuses to update anything, but gives me constant freezes and BSOD.

-----------------------------------------
So what have I already tried?

*I did the memory test during startup, and it said my memory was fine..
*I downloaded the latest firmware for the SSD I bought and made sure I had the same version, which i do
*I ASSUME my windows DVD is fine as I used it on a laptop before, and it installed the entire thing WITHOUT it complaining.
-----------------------------------------

I have no idea if I have a faulty BIOS, if my windows is broken or my memory stick isn't working.. I have no idea what is wrong,
I need help to move me closer as to what is the problem.. I need someone to tell me "if you do this and this, then I can tell you for sure the DVD is working fine, or your memory is fine"
so I can figure out what the problem is..

Welcome, Digg visitors. Wow, twice in three days an old post of mine gets picked up and Dugg like crazy. Just to be clear: If you have a specific problem with removing a specific program, a registry cleaning utility might be able to identify keys that will HELP you solve that specific problem. But that’s a rare scenario. Most people I know USE registry cleaners as part of their magic cleanup routine, and I see very little upside and a lot of potential downside in this sort of routine use. Specifically, as I write below, I have never seen any evidence that routine “cleaning” of the registry has any positive effect. I stand behind that statement.

SourceIt MAY fix problems on your PC and that's about it I guess. It sort of increases your performance a bit if you were having registry issues of that kind.

BUT other than that worry about how much ram you got, what video card you using and what processor you got! That's the meat of your PC anyway. Registry is just for the windows operating system. Quote
I absolutely agree with everything said in this thread, I mean these so-called "registry cleaners" are totally useless, and as others have said they can even be quite dangerous; you see, in these various "orphaned" keys/values surely make registry files (and their respective backups) a bit bigger, but the sizes of registry-files themselves certainly don't degrade computer's performance, meaning that they don't have any impact on the the speed of registry operations nomather how many of them were left after some program was un-installed etc.

That's simply because the registry is demand-paged, and also because registry operations (like queries e.g. searching/reads, and writes) are not a linear process (I am quoting DriverGuru here so believe me that it's true)

SourceQuote
The Windows registry is a massive database of almost every setting imaginable for every application on your system. It only makes sense that cleaning it out would improve performance, right? Sadly it’s just a marketing gimmick designed to sell registry cleaner products, as the reality is quite different… registry cleaners only remove a very small number of unused keys, which won’t help performance when you consider the hundreds of thousands of keys in the registry.

SourceQuote
The myth about Registry Cleaning was busted and yeah, it's true you won't see a big improvement after using those cleaners but they're good for general cleaning (like recently used files which or temporary stored in different folders even registry values).

WARNING: It's good to add that some Registry Cleaners or dangerous, since they try to clean what they shouldn't and that could make you OS unstable. With XP most of them were harmless but with Vista even those could be dangerous.

"WinXSX" is one of the causes behind this danger. That directory is a massive library of .dll files which they constantly update whith every new application installed (that why it grows in size) for compatibility purpose. Some registry cleaners aren't capable of understating that and they delete the registry value of old or recently installed .dll files. That could lead to applications incompatibility or SO instability.

SourceQuote
There's a wide variety of opinion on registry cleaners. Many people believe that they're important tools to keep your system running smoothly.

My opinion's a little different.

I rarely use a registry cleaner. In fact, I've never actually felt that I've needed to use a registry cleaner. And I definitely install and play with random things on my machine on a regular basis.

My fundamental belief is that the best registry cleaner is no registry cleaner at all. Most people simply don't need it, and don't need to run one.
"My fundamental belief is that the best registry cleaner is no registry cleaner at all."

Many people reach for a registry cleaner when an application is having problems, or when Windows is misbehaving. The problem is that these types of situations rarely respond to registry "cleaning" - it often requires application or Windows-specific resolution.

So when is registry cleaning appropriate? Besides rarely?

I would identify two cases:

*

As one of the last steps in an attempt to speed up Windows or if nothing else has really helped.
*

As one of the last steps in an attempt to resolve Windows or applications crashes that nothing else has helped.

In both cases, I consider it one of the last resorts because while it might help, it's just not that likely to help much.

But as I said, there are those that disagree with this position. And, to be honest, registry cleaners are unlikely to do any damage. Naturally you should take care to always be backed up properly, but unless you explicitly select advanced or aggressive options meant for the more advanced (or aggressive) users, you're unlikely to hurt anything with one of the recommended registry cleaners. It can happen, but it's rare.

SourceI could have sworn you said you weren't going to go down this road....
See Here...
There's more...just ask.the "registry cleaning" myth is just companies/software developers taking advantage of consumers insecurity regarding something they don't understand.

If I recall there was a similar myth regarding cleaning INI files, except back in that day it was justified since they were limited to 64K.Quote from: m_260 on February 24, 2009, 05:11:10 PM

alright- define what a "registry issue" is.

what makes a registry issue? a key that isn't referenced by programs? a key with wrong but still valid data?

the registry having an "issue" by any definition will only affect those applications who use the key having the "issue". Most programs ignore invalid values and use defaults, and those defaults overwrite the invalid value when the application SAVES it's settings, which means that scanning for and fixing these "issues" is merely a waste of time. (and, in the case if paid registry cleaners money as well).BC_Programmer:

Solve : Disc space and defrag problems?

Answer»

I need to free up more space on my hard drive. I am running a Dell Dimension 8200, Windows XP service pack 2,pentium4 1.8ghz,256 megs of RAM.
I have run disc cleanup on all the accounts and have run defrag and still have only 19% free space. The files are badly fragmented. I have put all documents on CD and deleted them from my hard drive and have done the same with most photos. I have also removed several programs that I do not use anymore.
After running defrag the report lists 30 files that cannot be defragmented. They are of course of varying fragment and file sizes. The majority of these files are "\Program files\ Common Files\Symantec Shared\ VirusDefs\" etc. What can I do to free up more space and get these files defragged or removed? I have so little space I can't even get my updates anymore not to mention that is is slowing the computer down. I have just replaced the power supply and the CD Rom drive and I would like to be able to install the software but am afraid I have too little space to do so.
Can any one help me PLZ?!?!?!?Hi, Mr. DANDY,

You don't have a big powerful machine. Your 256 MB of RAM is really minimal. So you are not a great candidate for running Norton Anti-Virus on that machine. Now, this is never going to be an item that will get 100% agreement, but in my humble opinion, you should

(1) Go to FileHippo and download AVG Free. Don't install it. Just download the file to your desktop (or wherever) for now.
(1a) While you're at it, download CCleaner from FileHippo, and just sit it on your desktop too.
(1b) While you're at it, download Ad-Aware from FileHippo, and just sit it on your desktop too.

(2) Use Add or Remove Programs to get rid of Norton (Symantec and Norton are the same thing). You might have two of their files on Add or Remove, and you will be told if you get the removal sequence wrong. Anyway, I'd take them, or it, off. Take off everything, including all the bad guys they might mention.

As soon as you've dumped Norton, put on AVG.
—Then get AVG to do an update, immediately.

Welcome to the world of freeware. Is AVG, which is free, not as good as Symantec? Well, quite a few people think AVG is actually better. The internet works in mysterious ways.

Okay, install those other two programs and run them too. (Run CCleaner every day, especially after long internet sessions.)

You can also right-click My Computer onto your (C) Drive (so you get a diagram showing your disk usage), and go for
>Properties >Disk Cleanup, but notice >More Options, where you can choose to kill every System Restore Point except your last one.

Now: clean up your system and see what it looks like. It will run faster, too.

And, lastly—be careful, here—you can also use a registry cleaning app, and for your XP I recommend RegSeeker 1.55 from Hover Desk or Major Geeks or SnapFiles. Now, please listen: There are numerous registry cleaners. I've used RegSeeker thousands of times on XP (32-bit XP, like yours, only—it wipes out 64-bit XP). But registry cleaners wipe out files in your registry, so they are use-at-your-own-risk programs. On a dirty machine, RegSeeker will take out more than 1,000 files. You might have to run it three or four times to get it down to taking out only a dozen or so.

—So, will your computer even start after that? Well, it is not absolutely for sure that it will. It should. Mine always have. But it's your call. Once you're in the clear, then RegSeeker will typically take out maybe a dozen files if you use it about once a week.

There you go. Have fun with your system. You want it lean and mean.

1. Do NOT run any registry cleaner, under any circumstances. It won't speed up your computer, but there is a good chance, it'll mess it up.
2. Defrag doesn't create more space. It just put files pieces together, so the computer can access them quickly. Running defrag is always a good idea, though. Some files won't be defragged, and it's normal.
3. Getting rid of Norton is a good idea. If you want go for it, use Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039, instead of Add\Remove.
4. Don't replace Norton with AVG 8.0, which has been having problems. Try ONE of these:

- Avast! free antivirus: http://filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/
- Avira free antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/en/download/index.html

- free Comodo Internet Security (firewall + AV): http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

If you decide to install Avast, or Avira, make sure, Windows firewall is turned on.
If you decide to install Comodo, make sure, Windows firewall is turned off.

5. You need more RAM. XP will run much better with 512MB of RAM, and even better yet with 1GB of RAM.
6. You simply may need bigger hard drive.(1) Please do upgrade your RAM. 256 MB is really pushing it. Try to install atleast 1 GB, as that is the baseline these days.

(2) Uninstall Norton. Try Avast or AVG 8 Free. (I've had problems with Avira before, so I can't recommend it).

(3) Run disk cleanup. Right click the drive in My Computer, select Properties followed by Tools. You'll then see the button for disk cleanup. Delete the types of files you dont need. You can also run Ccleaner, but the in-built windows disk cleanup is the safest of all.

(4) You can also delete older system restore points you dont need.

(5) Grab the free trial version of Diskeeper 2009 from the Diskeeper site. Install it and set it to automatic defrag. Since the Diskeeper trial version is actually a time limited fully functional version, it works just as good the original. It will defrag properly even with less than 10% free space and with fragmented system files. Run a boot-time defrag if required. The Windows defragger will not work properly in low space conditions.

Hope this helps to fix the problem.

Poor Norton. Three replies, each one different.

The only point in which they agree is: dump Norton. Oh dear. THANKS for the info! It seems to be clear that I don't have enough RAM and that the Security package I have with my ISP is insufficient to say the least. I have had problems with Norton before and discontinued it with some difficulty. Norton was part of the programs that were installed on my computer when it was delivered. I tried to get rid of it later and It was like the program was superglued into my system. Now it is what my ISP offers with it's package deal.
RAM is directly related to my memory if I am not mistaken. I have been told that the only way to add memory to this machine affordably is to go to EBay and buy a dead machine with memory sticks, etc. intact.
It seems that the more I learn about computers the more I realize how little I know. It sucks!!!!!!
When I bought this thing everyone told me 256MB of RAM would be all I would ever need. What has HAPPENED since 2002 to change all that? I need a GURU!!!!!!!!!

Registry cleaners should NOT delete ANY files.

the registry is composed of two files. SYSTEM.DAT and NTUSER.DAT, (with others loaded if "switch users" functionality is enabled)

each Hive is stored in a separate file- there are really only two hives, HKEY_USERS and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is just a reference to keys elsewhere in the registry, be them in the system or user hives).

HKEY_CURRENT_USER, of course, is just another alias to the HKEY_USERS key that holds the current users registry data.

registry cleaners work by deleted what they deem to be unused registry entries. the problem lies in determining just what an "unused entry" or obsolete entry is. most will scan the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT alias for references to COM objects whose executables no longer exist, and delete those entries.

the same steps are taken with other entries; (non-existent files, executables, etc).

each entry is not a file or folder, of course- there are registry keys and registry values. registry keys can hold any number of other keys and values as well as a default value (which shows up in the values pane).

As an example- take ProgID lookup for object names such as "Word.Application".

First, the Com Loader needs to get the CLSID of the concrete class to instantiate. to do so, it searches for Word.Application as a key under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT (which we've already established as an alias to elsewhere in the registry). finding this, it retrieves the CLSID, and performs a similar lookup, and looks inside and sees the InProcServer32 (or other COM key) and finds the path to the DLL/EXE, which it subsequently loads and uses.

If anything along this line is messed up due to some hueristical bug in the registry cleaner- for example, if it references a DLL file name that it deems "invalid" because it doesn't end with EXE,OCX, or DLL... then the entire Component will not load. Word would still start, and re-add the appropriate entries; but any attempt to automate word via OLE would fail miserably.

For Me; I'll use a registry cleaner, but only because every single time I compile one of my components, VB6 insists on making a NEW set of COM keys; they inEvitably become obsolete, when I abort the project or erase the DLL or move it, or whatnot.

That's true- with 256MB you could get by quite well. I got by with a scant 128MB for almost a YEAR myself.

I have a Dell dimension 4400 with a 1.6Ghz processor, likely older then your machine; I upgraded from the 512 that was installed to 1GB when I got it with a simple visit to my local london drugs. best price? probably not. Affordable? yes.

I also have a recently purchased laptop, and toshiba decided to place Norton on that as well. needless to say that was the first thing to go...1. The only way to get rid of Norton, fully, is to use Norton Removal Tool: http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039, instead of Add\Remove.
2. Never buy used RAM.
3. According to www.crucial.com: http://crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Dimension%208200%20Series%20(400MHz%20FSB), your computer can take up to 2GB of RAM, but crucial doesn't have it, and it must be installed in PAIRS (now, you have 2x128MB=256MB installed)
I found another place, but it's not cheap.
- http://www.memorystock.com/DellDimension8200400MHzFSB-512MBKit-Memory-RAM.html - 2x256MB=512MB (sufficient for XP) @ $65
- http://www.memorystock.com/DellDimension8200400MHzFSB-1GBKit-RAMBUS-Memory-RAM.html - 2x512MB=1GB (great for XP) @ ~$200 (out of question)

5. All together, you can get your computer back to decency for about $120.
6. On the other hand, you can get brand new computer, like this one: http://shop3.frys.com/product/5723792#detailed for $400:
* Model Number: Lenovo H3424U
* CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200
* Memory: 2GB PC2-5300
* Video: Integrated Intel GMA3100
* Hard Drive: 500GB, SATA II, 7200rpm
* Optical Drive: DVDRW DL RAM/ Drive
* Network: 10/100 Ethernet network
* Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
* Warranty: 1 year limited warranty I disagree with you again, Broni. I have been the owner of computers like that, and I have friends who have them too. The idea is not to spend $120, and not to buy a new computer. Not for the time being, at least.

The idea is this: "I need to free up more space on my hard drive." That was the question, and those are the parameters. The power supply and the CD—the CD, note; not the DVD—have just been replaced. Now, if we refrain from saying, "oh, he probably means. . . ." and we simply accept that the CD-R has been replaced [with a CD-RW, because things were subsequently burned], then those are the con$traints.

Solve : VISTA RECOVERY PROBLEM (HP LAPTOP DV2500)?

Answer»

I recently ordered some recovery cd's from HP for my DV2500 laptop, I had formatted the hard DRIVE & was not able to locate the originals.

The problem I have is a "recovery attempt failed" message I get each time which pops up after about 3 hours. I've tried this 3 times now. When I click the details log everything passes except for a VIDEO log file which says failed. This machine was in for service a few months ago for a video problem in which some parts were replaced so it makes me wonder if this problem is connected to that.

I know SOMEONE posted a similar problem here last month but nothing was resolved in the messages. Would purchasing then loading a new copy of Vista solve this or would it also fail to load?

Any suggestions?

Yes, that is the most likely problem. If they didn't use identical parts then the disk wont work. The recovery disk that HP sent you will only work with the particular hardware that that computer shipped with.

You should contact HP and explain your situation. Quote from: JJ 3000 on November 08, 2009, 10:29:06 PM

Solve : Problem w/refresh rate. HP Pavilion dv2500?

I have a windows vista operating SYSTEM and a generic pnp monitor on NVIDIA GeForce 7150M/630M. I am wanting to change my refresh rate. It is set on 60 and I can't find a way to change it to maybe a 75 or higher. My eyes always start to hurt about 5 minutes after I have been on the computer. I have tried to update the drivers, but it says that they are all up to date. Can the refresh rate be changed? You may NEED to change your screen resolution before changing the refresh rate because not every screen resolution will SUPPORT all of the same refresh rates. The available rate and resolution options are based on the video adapter and it's driver, and of course your monitor.Quote from: j.keaton25 on November 08, 2009, 09:18:22 PM

If it is a LCD monitor then leave it at 60. The refresh rates were an issue with older CRT TECHNOLOGY, but they don't AFFECT the redraw rate on LCD.

Solve : Randomly Freezes, Improves After Standby?

Answer»

I have had my laptop for several months now and since the beginning it randomly freezes (usually while I am on the internet) 1-3 times an evening. Task manager shows shows 100% CPU and all the applications stop responding (or goes very slow). To recover, I will go standby (could be very slow) and after couple of seconds I switch computer on again and it works fine. I have run a virus scan and nothing turns up.

Here are the specs:
Manufacturer: Acer
Model: Aspire 5810t
OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
CPU/Ram: 1.3 GHz / 3001 MB
Video Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series EXPRESS
Chipset Family
Sound Card: Realtek High Definition Audio

Any thoughts? Is it still under warranty?Welcome to CH....

What virus scans did you run?Thank you for the welcome! I have an extended service plan for it but am not sure how I would survive without a computer for a week or two while they service it I am also afraid I will take it in and they will take a quick look at it and not find anything since it only freezes a couple times a day.

I have BitDefender Antivirus 2009 as my antivirus program. Well, I'd check out the malware FORUM , run the scans and if nothing shows up with those scans, go with your warranty. You don't want to do anything physical to void it.

You can also download speedfan and check your temps.

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.phpDownload, and install SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Post your computer temperatures:

===================================================

Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and DOUBLE click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.
Attach the file to your next reply.
Sorry for the delay in responding. I was in bed by the time you all posted so I couldn't do anything until after work today. So here is the info you request (assuming I did it correctly.

First, Speed Fan gave an error message when opening but it did load. I don't know if it gave good information though. Here are the screen shots.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Here is the Process Explorer information...

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]Temperature looks fine and I don't see 100% CPU usage.
System Idle Process (CPU not used) is at 77.23%, which is not great, but acceptable. No PARTICULAR program is using any significant chunk of CPU.The computer has been acting pretty good today... no freezes. But it is like that. It may act fine for a day or two and then freeze three times the next night. It is very random.Keep Process Explorer handy and try to get a snapshot, when CPU spikes. I can see from your SpeedFan screenshot, that CPU was at 93% at the moment.
Something is going on there.
You may also want to check for an infection, as Karnac said.I wanted to give you all an update as I am sure many are very concerned I received my Windows 7 update in the mail yesterday and installed it on my computer last night. While I am less than a day into Windows 7, I have not had any freezes since moving to the new OS. I hope that my problem was just from something in Vista and has been solved. I will let you know if I discover anything so hopefully someone can benefit from it. Thank you for posting back Another update... since installing Windows 7 on my computer there have been NO MORE freezing problems that I described in this post. No idea what the cause what, but Windows 7 seems to have fixed it. I will post again if the problem comes back, but otherwise it looks like it is all better Cool:)

Solve : Win 7 cant connect to wireless router Linksys WRT160Nv2?

Answer»

This week I upgraded my desktop from Vista to 7.
My wireless always worked flawless with Vista, but 7 is giving me problems.

It sees the various networks in the neighborhood, and when I SELECT mine, I need to enter my passphrase.
When I enter it it says that its not correct.

On my Vista laptop I enter the same passphrase, and it works fine. Same as with my desktop when I had Vista on it.

Does anyone know what this can be??? Help will be very much appreciated Do you have a KEY for the encryption that you need to enter?Quote from: QUANTOS on November 06, 2009, 12:40:44 PM

Do you have a key for the encryption that you need to enter?

Is what you mean the same as the passphrase?Yes, by key I mean passphrase.Yes I do have the passphrase. It's my router, and I use the same passphrase for my Vista laptop.Perhaps you forgot to setup the passphrase on the Desktop machine...
It's not going to AUTOMATICALLY see it just because it's on the laptop...
This is by design.Uhmmm no I didnt forget to set it up.

When I select my wireless network on the desktop, it asks me for the passphrase.
I than enter the passphrase (the one I created when I set up the router) and than I get a message SAYING that the passphrase is incorrect. However, when I connect to my network with the Vista laptop, I enter the exact same passphrase, and it connects.

Remember, it connected fine to the wireless when I had Vista on the desktop. It changed after I upgraded to Windows 7.Ummmm since you changed OS's it needs to be setup again ...from the beginning. What needs to be set up again? The router or the desktop?Your connection...

Solve : Windows Vista? 7? Premium? Home? What??

Answer»

I'm confused. I'm building myself a new computer soon but hopefully it will be finished before October 22 therefore I want to put an OS on it, a windows one as I will probably be using it to play a few games and don't want to have to use wine, beer or whatever it is called. On amazon (usually a good price) I see:

Vista:
Windows Vista, Home Premium EDITION with Service Pack 1 (PC) - £124.53
Windows Vista, Ultimate Edition with Service Pack 1 (32-bit CD and 64-bit DVD) (PC) - £160.67

Windows 7:
Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, Full Version (PC DVD) - £169.78
Microsoft Windows 7 Professional, Full Version (PC DVD) - £148.00
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium, Full Version (PC DVD) - £64.68

Now I was orginally looking at Windows 7 home edition as the only extra for the other editions that looks quite nice is the XP compatibility mode but I'm sure most games will be windows 7 compatible. But now the windows Vista home premium edition costs £124.53 but the windows 7 only costs £64.68? So if I wait I save £60 but I don't really want to wait. This is all assuming:

Vista Home -> Windows 7 Home
Vista Ultimate -> Windows 7 Ultimate

Don't know what happened to Vista Prof. ?

Any ideas on what to do? Or just go screw it and buy Vista Ultimate as at least that seems a good idea but then im paying £100 for useless crap I don't need.

WINE is the windows API implementation on Linux.

I would get Home Premium, should be enough, unless you do find a need for the extra stuff coming with the more expensive versions.
those Windows 7 prices are mad.

im a dutchman so we got euro's. but still it's mad.

Windows 7 full home = 200,00
Windows 7 pro = 299,00
Windows 7 ultimate = 320,00
That is all in Euro's,

now comes the best part.
Windows 7 full home = $199,00
Windows 7 pro = $299,00
Windows 7 ultimate = $399,00
Accoriding to microsoft.

Windows 7 pro is the same in dollars and euro's !!!! while
1 euro = 1,41..... dollar
could someone explain that..

and it doesnt matter which vista you have installed, you get the windows 7 you buy on it.... so
windows vista home -> windows 7 ultimate is possible as a upgrade. That prices is in UK pounds.
Windows 7 Home Premium is a basic version for people who just surf the net, write word documents, play games, and watch movies.
Windows 7 Professional is for people who want to back up their computers on the network which can get useful, use remote desktop host, so you don't need VNC, use Presentation Mode for business travelers, Windows Server Domain support, and Location Aware Printing.
Windows 7 Ultimate can use Aero GLASS while remoting, use BitLocker Drive Encryption, Subsystem for Unix-based Applications, and some enterprise features from Professional.Quote from: notme on September 29, 2009, 05:30:04 PM

Aesthetics-wise, personally i refer windows 7.
Performance-wise, for windows 7 there is no difference between what version you purchase. Only difference is features. (additional features aren't core windows components so they don't have an effect on performance).

It all comes down to what you're going to use it for.

If you have some special tie to Vista, then go ahead.
However by purely logical judgement i would recommend windows 7. (price and performance accounted for)

As for what version of 7 to use, well if you're interested in ultimate-exclusive features such as 'bit-lock' then sure to ultimate.
If you PLAN on using it for normal home-purposes or gaming, i would go with home premium. Best bang for buck. Quote from: Crinale819 on November 07, 2009, 10:54:34 PM

Solve : PC Down Service Pack 1?

Answer»

I have an HP 8120n Media Center PC w/Vista Home Premium. I was trying to upgrade to Win 7 and when I went to the compatibility CHECK I was told I needed Service Pack 1 to upgrade to 7. I downloaded and attempted to install SP1 and my PC stopped in the middle of the install and I can't do a thing with it. I have tried everything, system restore, system repair, boot from Safe Mode, boot directly from the WIN7 disk and nothing gets past the point where it is stuck. My questions, is there a fix for this and if not is there a way to copy my DATA from my HARD DRIVE to another drive and/or DVD disks so I don't lose all my files? I think I can bring the system back using my recovery disks but I will lose all data that way. Please help I have to much stuff to lose.
Thank you,
BGYour best bet is to back up your data and go for clean install (ALWAYS recommended) of Windows 7.

Solve : Install 7 w/o Anti Virus!?

Answer»

I just got my real Windows 7 upgrade today!
It says in the enclosed booklet that you can Install 7 without Anti Virus!
I was going to install it...
until I read the instructions.
(Sometimes I do read the instructions.)
It recommends that you connect to the Internet...
and install it without any Anti Virus
.
Need to read that over again. I must have missed sometime.

I think there may be a bit of flawed logic there... So you go online and get a cracked VERSION without the anti virus?Hmm, I wasn't aware of that. But, I've been using Win 7 RC here and, once you're using it, Win 7 gives an ALERT that no anti-virus is installed in the same manner that Win Vista does. I have Avast Anti-virus installed.Do not use ANY OS without adding a 3rd party AV. Windows 7 is no exception (unless you never go online or transfer files among computers)This is the recommended method for INSTALLING only...

Yes, That is what the instructions say.
Patio, do you think that Windows 7 has some kind of firewall or filter during the install process only that prevents unsolicited things coming into the system?
I Never thought of that.It doesn't matter, it's an installation routine. You are not connecting to the web during the install. Once installed you need to add an av.Allan,
The instructions explicitly say that I need to have an Internet connection during install. I use DSL and it is into the Ethernet card. I get the idea that Windows 7 will look for updates during the install process. I don not recall that being the case for XP or Vista.
I have not done it YET, later in the week I will give it a try. Lots of family things to do right now. And I am still waiting for a sata cable to arrive. It WILL check for updates at some POINT, but don't worry about it - you can't install an AV until after the install is finished anyway. Really - not an issue. Just do the install and when it's done add an AV.

Bottom line, you can't install an av until after the OS is installed anyway, so I'm not even sure what it is you're instructions are telling you. Not that you ASKED, but what I do is:

format
install the OS
install the chipset driver
install an av
install all other drivers
connect to Windows Update
go from there

Solve : 64 bit OS, 32 bit programs?

Answer»

I have a new computer with Windows 7 installed. My older 32bit programs WONT load. Is there any way to install and run a 32 bit program on a 64bit OS?32-bit programs work on 64-bit OPERATING systems.

Did you install these 32-bit programs to your Windows 7 computer, or did you just copy the Program Files?I tried to install a very old Lotus Approach program and I assumed it was a 32-bit, 64-bit problem. I found a newer copy on EBAY but the disclaimer states that it didn't work on 64-bit Vista, so I'm assuming that it wont work on 7. That could be a 16 bit application then. They won't run on a X64 system.I AGREE, it's almost surely a 16-bit program, or has 16-bit components.
Since it was last upgraded for WinME i'd also have to agree...
