Solve : Internet Explorer problem? |
|
Answer» When I am using internet explorer 7 (because my computer won't let me download IE8 from the MICROSOFT website) sometimes when I try to exit a window, the window i tried to exit will pop up continually. I have not found a solution to this problem short of turning off the computer. TASK manager will not work during these occurences. This has HAPPENED twice so far and is very aggravating.Could you please explain in a LITTLE more detail? Not sure I follow - and is it always the same site? Is it a tab or a new window? What exactly happens? You need to get LEGIT 1st...that's probably 1/2 the reason for any issues... |

Solve : Win vista with xp duel boot? |
|
Answer» What are the down sides for installing win xp on PC RUNNING VISTA for duel boot ? I just what to KNOW before doing it .Should I or not?The only downside is doing it. It's a bit more difficult to add an OLDER OS as a dual boot option than it is adding a NEWER OS. Once done, HOWEVER, there should be no downside whatsoever. |

Solve : Windows 7 Internet/Network Issue? |
|
Answer» I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on two computers, one is absolutely fine and working perfectly, the other has had some issues and still has a couple. ... the network cable being plugged in to the motherboard ...So, your network adapter is onboard, right? You presently have no add-iin network card installed? Have you visited the computer manufacturer's website to search for a driver? I have Win 7 RC installed on a Compaq d530 CMT, which I'd guess is older than your computer. The d530 has an onboard network adapter which was recognized by Win 7 during installation with no need for me to search for a driver. This computer also has a Linksys LNE100TX NIC in it; for that, I did have to go Linksys website and get a driver. it does not need a driver, but i have nvidia chipset drivers for it (the newest ones, around the 15.49 or SOMETHING) i have no extra network card, but as i said in the initial post i tried using one and could not find windows 7 compatible drivers.Quote from: Blade285 on November 07, 2009, 08:15:34 AM i have got the nvlddmkm.sys error AGAIN.Yes, I believe it's a drive issue. This might be helpful: http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic5276-21-1.aspxthanks for the link, but i've already tried all of the things in there. i've currently just deleted the .sys file and can use it without any nvidia drivers. (and therefore not on the nice aero theme) also, people in that topic seem to only have the problem intermittently, whereas i cannot enter windows at all, ever. it loads and then when the user logon screen is meant to appear it's either black or BSOD. do you think it's still worth buying a new network and/or wireless adaptor? For 15 Bucks...my answer would be Yes. |

Solve : Almost no input Windows Vista 32 bit? |
|
Answer» I have windows vista 32 bit sp2. I am running a HP s3300z system with an AMD Athlon LE-1620 processor. I have a NVIDIA internet card. I am recieving almost no input. My USB drives, internet, and audio are not WORKING. Please assist! What exactly do you mean you are receiving almost no input? And did this just start or is it a new installation? This just started yesterday. My no input comment was because the computer won't recognize the USB ports, any audio input/output, or my internet connection(which is WIRED).Okay - what led up to this? In other words, what happened between the LAST time the system worked PROPERLY and the first time it did not (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?Never mind. After about 7 total reboots, it decided to run CHKDSK, which fixed the problem. Thanks for trying! So now there is input ? ?Yes. Everything now responds correctly to input.:Quote from: patio on November 04, 2009, 06:21:31 PM So now there is input ? ? |

Solve : MARYBOO NEED HELP? |
|
Answer» I am getting the exact same problem, after install windows keeps configuring update stage 3 of 3 with 0%. Keeps REBOOTING, this is not good cause I need my LAPTOP for my job, I'm a field engineer. I went into safe mode and it continues to do the same thing, windows says everything is fine and no hardware and or software PROBLEMS detected. What next? windows says everything is fine and no hardware and or software problems detected. Does this mean the computer works in Safe Mode, but does not work when you get out of Safe Mode? You were supposed to try Last Good Configuration. This option is on the same menu as Safe Mode. Did you try it? What was the result? Did you try Disk to Disk Recovery? Is it something you don't want to do? If you tried it, what was the result? You have to do a better job of following instructions and giving DETAILED results of what happened when you tried it if you want help. ALLAN I am so sorry please for give me. GOD BLESSjkalak I try what you say it did not work not thing work. i do my best to say what is wrong with the computer it start up and go to that error and restart over. i can not do any thing on that acer. i am over to my sister on her computer. i need help please Thanks for getting back to me Maryboo. I put a note for you and michellezen in her thread. Follow the instructions in that article: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Get-Vista-Out-of-the-Infinite-Reboot-Loop-Configuring-Updates-Stage-3-of-3-0-with-Vista-SP1-78933.shtml This does require a Vista installation disk. I know you don't have one. You need to borrow one. Microsoft is giving them away for customer service issues, but I don't know if they will give you one because they expect Acer to take care of you. Acer will only sell you a restore disk for about $25. It will wipe your computer clean. The same as the Disk to Disk Recovery I told you to try. Did you try it?Quote from: jkolak on January 21, 2010, 12:19:00 PM Thanks for getting back to me Maryboo. yes ! do you no how much is a vista installation disk.Quote from: MARYBOO on January 21, 2010, 01:00:27 PM
jkalak am i doing this right to get back to you. i don't no what i am doing to replies to you.Yes, Maryboo, you are doing it correctly. When you are at the end of a thread, click on the Reply button at the bottom right to just add your comment. If you want to quote a post, click the Quote button at the upper right of the post. You can cut out whatever you don't want included in your quote. Here are some prices on Windows Vista. http://www.google.com/products?q=windows+vista&aq=f You have to have the same version as the version you are trying to repair. It is expensive. So you might want to open a Support Ticket at Microsoft and beg them for one. I had a different kind of failure on Service Pack 2 installation. They PRACTICALLY begged me - twice - to send me one. FREE. Borrow from a FRIEND - also FREE - but harder to find! |

Solve : My beloved keyboard? |
|
Answer» I found a lovely old NMB keyboard RT6856TW. (Don't like the little black one I got with my new Dell computer). BUT, it is made with a PS-2, so I bought a converter that has one end that plugs into the computer on a USB connection, and the other end branches in two to connect the keyboard and mouse. I have no need for a PS-2 mouse so I don't connect that in, at first the light came on on the keyboard, but it won't type. The light doesn't stay on either, but even with it on it still will not type. Is there something I can download that will make this great keyboard work? Thanks every so much. Not a good idea to use an e-mail addy as a User name... He or she is probably USED to it by now... Yeah, looks like beautiful work. Counterproductive, though, to have a Contact form to fill out while simultaneously displaying the email address.I just bought one of those converters for a computer and it had the same problem. The num LOCK turns on, and if I am lucky I can enter the BIOS, but it just dosen't work. Then I found out the ps/2 PORTS actually did work... A waste of $8.That's an interesting point. I am using a PS/2 to USB converter for a mouse with no problem. Maybe they aren't intended to use with a keyboard....Quote from: jkolak on January 17, 2010, 12:24:00 PM That's an interesting point. A waste of $8.I have used ten of them things and they did not fail. But maybe you got the wrong make or model.he probably plugged it into the wrong Y connector.Ah! I didn't think of that. Mine has just one PS/2 jack.Nope, I plugged it in right. I even tried reversing them too |

Solve : right mouse button? |

Answer» I am unable to use the right mouse button when on the internet. It works fine otherwise and the Control Panel SAYS it is working perfectly. For example, I can't cut, paste, or copy from the internet but I can in Word or any other such program.Have you tried reinstalling/updating the mouse driver? I am unable to use the right mouse button when on the internet. It works fine otherwise and the Control Panel says it is working perfectly. For example, I can't cut, paste, or copy from the internet but I can in Word or any other such program. which browser are you using?Hi, THANKS for your help. Info I missed out is as follows. I'm using a Logitech cordless mouse RX650. I use FIREFOX and WINDOWS7. Also I can't paste using the edit drop down menu either.Does it work in IE?And what ver/ of FireFox ? ? Help/About FireFox...Quote from: Allan on January 19, 2010, 06:54:07 AM Does it work in IE? I've just tried that after reading your question and the answer is: yes, it does. Thank you. Now how can I get to work in Firefox which is the latest version?Well, the only thing I can ghink of is there may be an add-on conflicting with the the mouse's proper operation. You might try Firefox Safe Mode and see what happens (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode). If everything works properly you'll have to FIGURE out which add-on is causing the problem. Thanks, Allan, I've gone into Safe Mode and disabled all the add-ons and things are working perfectly. I'll re-add the various add-ons one at a time and see what happens. Once again, thank you very much. Problem solved. |

At 100 yards clear line of site the signal is very weak and sometimes not at all, and thats from a local free wireless provider. How can I boost or increase that distance without going broke. Solve : Vista, brand new laptop and me? Suggestions to keep uninfected please.? |
|
Answer» Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my thread. Be sure you remove any existing anti-virus on your computer that you don't want. You cannot have two anti-virus programs installed.I believe you can have two anti-virus programs installed but you should not have two anti-virus programs running at the same time. So, as a general rule, it's best to only have one installed. That way, you don't need to fuss with settings to be sure one of them is not continuously running in the background while the other is.Thank you for your reply jkolak and soybean. jkolak, I have only just heard of that program from microsoft. It seems it has certain advantages over other free programs, in that it gets more of the newer viruses that the others miss. Although McAfee is a very trusted brand too. If my McAfee is paid for say, 60 days to 1 year and then I take over a payment, I may as well use that till their expiry period at least. Give it a test so as to speak. So is a firewall different to an antivirus program? and Is an Anti spyware different again? And I need all three? Then what is a firewall? Is McAfee not a firewall product? A LOT of the programs on my laptop seem to be trial optioned such as the Office Home/Student, that's a 60 day trial version. So with my recent history with MSoffice, I may as well just delete that from the drive then and get OpenOffice.org. as recommended in a previous post, and that way I wont have future issues. (Thanks soybean). Thank you ImnoGuruPardon me. Now if someone gave me tthree new laptops,... I would not put them on the internet. Instead, I would use a older computer for internet until I was confident that I had very good Anti-Virus and Backup software on the new machines. Like they say... An Lance of Prevention... Right now there is an inordinate amount of virus and orbiter evil activity going o on the internet. Mucho coming from distant lands. Right. Download the installation files on an older computer and copy them to a CD for the new computers. Problem is, I think Avira, Avast, and AVG now use installers that download the files from the internet. If the trial version of the Anti-virus program is active on the new computers, it would, of course, be safe to use them on the net. All that stuff that came on the new computer is called crapware. It's just propaganda to get you to spend more money. Also called foistware because I'm sure you didn't ask to have stuff put on there that will add to the price of your computers. Dump MS Office for OpenOffice, McAfee for Avira, etc. The recent Google-China stuff in the news has led me to read a lot of other articles about malware activity by the Chinese govt and military, but the BIGGEST spike in malware activity comes from the high profits of selling ROGUE (fake) anti-virus software hijacking your computer. I don't know if McAfee includes a firewall. Recommendations I have read on this forum are for Comodo Firewall, then 2 anti-spywares - Malwarebytes Anti-malware and SuperAntiSpyware - and then pick only one anti-virus between the three I listed above.Thank you Geek-9pm and jkolak for your comments, and thus I am here. I understand, very well the difficulties with the internet and virus's. I bought these laptops for work. What I didn't figure on was that I would have to set everything up from scratch. Windows Home was loaded on right to the stage that I had to agree to the EULA, so were other programs. I haven't been through the lot yet. So far, I got off the net and tried to figure out and set up the laptop to work. The lappies are all wireless and in looking at what they were and how to fly them, logged onto my home wireless network... (which was unprotected I might add ) and I realized that there would be some problems presented in a very short time if I continued with them on the net. This next time I fire them up, will be the 4th time I have opened them up. So I am cautious at the moment of even starting them, until I know a little bit more about them and security, for the home router too for that matter. ( I have made a separate post about that here). Unfortunately you have to start the computer to do that, and my main laptop (for me the Dell 1545) logs onto the network automatically. (I don't know why or how, but in fiddling with the settings of the laptop and the router, I got different results, from limited connectivity to none available, according to the laptop control panel). You see I don't know anything of Vista or how to go through the programs on it to set it up. In fact I don't even know how to delete anything on it yet! Crickey I don't even recognize the start menu, and all the balloons keep fading away before I can read them? Whats that about? and this big thing on the top center of screen? Anyway I digress... McAfee out, in with Super-antispy, AVG I'm familiar with. Comodo for firewall... Hmmm does that mean I have to get it off of the net? I'll have to see what McAfee is all about then.. ( that just means I have to try to connect with the new settings on the router... something about enable AP. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 18, 2010, 07:54:47 PM Pardon me. How do I back up (well anything actually), the software? How do I do that please? Thanks for the help my computer help mentors. I'll be back later I'm sure. Thanks again ImnoGuru I'm going to get off this thread since it is going off topic now. I looked at your other post in networking, and I'll leave that to others as well since networking has me pulling hair at times myself. I have been using my LAN for 2 years now, but didn't have an initial learning curve because everything just worked when I set it up. Only recently have neighbors gotten on wireless such that I noticed that I needed to learn about the router's security settings to keep them off because I kept seeing their computers on my network! (while I wondered why my throughput was going down....) I will mention that you don't delete programs with the trash can or the delete key. Go to the Control Panel and use Programs and Features to remove programs you don't want. You will get used to info balloons coming up on your System Tray and learn from them. A lot of your questions are answered in Help and Support on the Start Menu. Best of luck with your computers.Thank you jkolak, I found your posts enlightening. I found my router wasn't secure the same way... All of a sudden I had RUN out of data use available. Then found out neighbors had visitors with a wireless laptop that they downloaded heaps of games and cheats that weekend. Getting a bit more wise to it all now though. I am also getting use to using the help features as well thanks.Setting up WPAThe Mcafee protection you have is more than likely a trial. I bought a new dell laptop 32 days ago with windows 7 and it had Mcafee too. It was a 30 trial . I always use AVG free on all my machines, it works well and can be downloaded for free from "cnet downloads". As for spyware protection, a good free one is adaware and it is available from the same site. AdAware is NOT a good utility - it's pretty much obsolete in fact. MalwareBytes & SuperAntispyware are good replacements. I'm not a big AVG fan either, but it's certainly better than McAfee. |

Solve : Help setting up dual boot? |
|
Answer» Hello, PS does this look like a decent build?Looks great! And YES. use two drives for your dual boot. With Vista and Win 7 the third party HDD clone programs are near useless. Here is my current plan: 1 st Drive. IDE 160MB, partitions for Windows 2000, Windows XP, DATA, My Documents and Backup. 2 nd Drive. SATA 40 GB, partitions for Vista and Windows 7. I have spare 250 GB drive and some other drives I can put in the Mobile rack and tray if needed. And yes, the BIOS will let you boot many sources. I just discovered that mine will even find my new USB external DVD Burner and boot from it! And this is not a new machine at all! CHECK your BIOS. In my BIOS I can hit F8 and it will give me a boot menu. If I boot the first drive, I get the standard XP boot menu. When I boot the second drive I get the Windows 7 menu for either VISTA or Win 7 The 160 GB has nuff free space for backups. Windows 7 likes the backup to be on another physical HDD. Good idea. So far I have put Windows 7 as a dual-boot on two computers and it works fine. Hope this is of some help.My plan currently is Drive 0: 25 Gb partition for Xp / 30 Gb partition for 7 / 130 Gb Programs /130 Gb Data Drive 1: 100 Gb Music / 100 GB photos / 120 GB Misc. Does this sound like a good plan?Looks great. Remember that XP goes first. If you ever have to repair the XP portion, you will also have to fix the Windows 7 boot loader. Other people know how to do this, I am still learning. I think that is some way to make a backup of the boot sector. Not sure about that. I know nothing about the Mac. Wish I had one.Quote from: RudeDawg on November 01, 2009, 09:02:17 AM Drive 0: 25 Gb partition for Xp / 30 Gb partition for 7 / 130 Gb Programs /So, you're going to install programs for both XP and 7 on the 130 GB partition? I guess I see no problem with that, although I think I'd probably make the OS partitions larger and install programs on the same partition as the OS. That's just my opinion. Otherwise, the plan looks fine.Quote So, you're going to install programs for both XP and 7 on the 130 GB partition? Its worth a try. Some programs want the user data to be in the same directory tree as the program. So this would fix the problem of having two sets of user data for such programs.LOL, now I'm thoroughly confused...... Perhaps I would just be better off running 7 because Ultimate does have the XP Mode. My main concern is having my printer work and Office Xp (2002). Office 2002 I'm sure is a bit too old for Windows 7. Will XP Mode allow me to run Office XP?Sorry if I and Geek-9pm caused some confusion. Your partitioning plan would work fine if you want to dual boot. Per http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/GettingReadyforWindows7/thread/abbe2f98-569e-4123-b0c7-2eb785f13315, Office XP will run with Windows 7. What printer do you have? Not a problem, I are easily confused. (lol) I'm thinking I'll probably just run 7 Ultimate and save my XP Pro for my old machine. If Windows 7 will run Office XP that is great! Presently I have a Canon Pixma MP830 but I'm seriously considering going to a black and white laser printer since I rarely print anything in color and this thing seemingly evaporates the color ink in no time. Each toner cartridge costs about 2 dollars more than I pay for each of my 5 Canon cartridges and will last probably 5 times as long. Thank you for your input!!!That Canon printer is not very old, is it? You can get a Win 7 driver for it at http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=12804. Click the drop down box for OS and select Windows 7.Thanx Soybean, that'll make life bearable until I can afford a B/W Printer! |

Solve : Slow internet in windows 7? |
|
Answer» I just installed a dual BOOT of xp and 7 and my internet is very slow in windows 7. I have tried alot to fix it. I got the latest drivers, turned off automatic updates, turned off remote differential comparison. I also typed netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled in command promt which ACTUALLY made it normal for a little, but it then went BACK to slow shortly afterwards. My download speed in 7 is 30 kb/s and in xp its around 300 kb/s. My wireless is a usb-G802. Although the funny thing is that in 7 my signal is much better and I pick up more networks. I LIKE windows 7 a lot more then xp, so any help would be greatly appreciated. For reference, what is your Dload speed when you tie straight to the router with a cable? If it is about the same as XP, then that could mean an issue with the wireless driver in Windows 7. |

Solve : Want XP instead of Win 7? |
|
Answer» Quote from: jkolak on January 19, 2010, 04:21:26 AM I think PROTECTION of the OS is a big issue in today's security environment. Coming from the early days of computer where you were the master of your OS and hard drive, I first resented all the permissions problems, but since everyone else on the net wants to be master of my computer, I see that XP is more vulnerable. Yeah, I think a lot of people think of it like "protecting the user from themselves" like for changing settings; in fact it is protecting the user from, as you say, other programs and malware that wants to take control of the system. Actually, Linux has been a strong proponent of the same thing Vista is only introducing now; basically, you don't run the desktop as root (heck, you try to avoid running anything as root if you can get away with it) of course the Linux and Windows markets are are far DIFFERENT demographic and will be until the developers behind linux start adding serious features rather then making things they think might be fun to implement.Right. I've explored migration to Linux and find it still a long way from being a serious end-user tool in SPITE of it's dominance in professional IT work. Linux also touts itself as malware resistant, but I can't help but wonder on all the recent press on malware attacks on commercial and government systems which are bound to be a high percentage of Linux based networks.Quote from: jkolak on January 19, 2010, 06:01:20 AM Linux also touts itself as malware resistant, but I can't help but wonder on all the recent press on malware attacks on commercial and government systems which are bound to be a high percentage of Linux based networks. With Vista I'd say they are on a pretty even tier malware wise, excepting that there is far more malware created for Windows solely because the idea of malware is basically to infect as many machines as possible. Many Linux lovers who bash windows complain that UAC is the same as something on Linux called "graphical Sudo" of course, they forget the mention which of the kazillion distributions each of which can use one of around 10 or 20 different desktop environments Microsoft copied from. Not to mention that before Vista these same Linux heads were complaining that XP by default ran everybody as admin; now MS fixes that and they still complain. Same goes for compatibility; with XP, they worked harder on making sure win9x programs and even 3.1 apps ran alright; in fact, they patched around issues with popular programs, just to get them working. Since if you upgraded from win98 to XP and suddenly your word processor or something didn't work, you would blame the OS, not the crappy programmers of the word processor. This was essentially the "bloat" that people were complaining about for so long; so they pretty much removed all that for Vista, and people still complain. Yes, Vista installs are going to be bigger then XP installs. IS this surprising? Should we all call XP and win98 and win95 bloated because we can compare them to the 15MB it takes to install windows 3.1? Not really. I mentioned before that the ACTUAL "cost" of the space being used by Vista or 7 on a modern PC as opposed to to the cost of space on an older PC was less; we now have more disk space and it costs less then it did, and the OS install takes up a smaller fraction of a less expensive disk. All good points. I certainly don't want to return the (dis)favor and bash Linux - I can certainly respect anyone with the determination to master a complex OS just as being an OS operator has taught me to respect the intelligence and higher education of computer engineers, and being a successful home mechanic has taught me to respect the same in automotive engineers. And being on a budget, a free OS was certainly appealing - And with the Mac-like talk of Windows malware being a good reason to switch, I certainly considered it. I certainly have tried many times over the years. I bought Linux for Dummies around 1998 or so, but couldn't see learning new terms for the things I had already learned in DOS. I came into computers in 1984 and caught the tail end of DOS and the beginning of WIMP and started the latter with an Atari ST, called "Jackintosh" (after Jack Tramiel) since it was seen as an improvement over the Mac of 1985. OS on a ROM chip seemed like heaven at the time for user-friendliness. But you didn't learn till later that the rest of the OS was left out, and when GDOS came out it had to be loaded on the hard drive, and by the time all the boot-time utilities came out, it was just as hair-pulling as Windows on DOS, especially when the net got started and you had to write all the networking protocol scripts manually. After taking a good look at Linux and thinking M$ was getting too much of my budget, I had to admit that the thing about Windows is that 99% of the time, things just work without having to be a guru. In Linux when something didn't work, I submitted a bug report. Then someone from customer service would email me and ask if I had installed the flash plugin, and another if I had installed the mp4 codec. In Windows, if you are missing something, it will usually tell you and ask if you want to install it. So I suppose M$ deserves their compensation for bringing this degree of usability to the masses - yet as the help boards on this site show, computers of any kind are still a long way from being a true consumer appliance like a dishwasher or television. My personality is split between the need for an appliance that doesn't need attention, that I can operate without getting under the hood and do my tasks without distraction on the one side, and then the closet geek side of me wants to dig in and understand all of this. All of these thoughts are beginning to gel in my mind in a firm direction, and I am set to commit to Win7 on all machines. Exploring Linux and back-support for XP are going to be in VirtualBox. So there I am....I like to explore different Operating Systems as well, but I always seem to encounter issues installing linux on my older machines (to be fair I also have issues with most versions of windows on them too; I just am not very good with Linux, at least not quite enough to know all the ins and outs of the various commands. Back in the DOS days when CLI was the main interface and the real debate was really between Command.com and the various Linux shells, one thing that was hotly debated by the geeks on both sides was nearly a exercise in triviality; the way that wildcards were expanded. Most linux shells expanded, for example, * to be all files in a directory it passed it to a program; so the program would never actually see any wildcards at all. This had a benefit in that the program only had to handle lists of filenames, and not actually parse wildcards. However, the problem with this is that the program cannot really know when a wildcard was used; when you use, for example, del *.* on DOS, you get a warning (well, actually, that wasn't until DOS 5, IIRC) but with most linux shells, rm * gave no warning and deleted everything. Now, of course, this isn't really a bad thing in and of itself; just be sure of what your doing. the problem is that many seemingly minor typos in commands can cause an errant * to get into a destructive command, and POOF! the files are gone. Either way, it was extremely trivial and certainly not debated by the masses, just the hardcore nerds, and it was really not something that could be won for one side; they both had their strengths; Linux is mostly for the programmer, so making the creation of C programs easier is a pretty easy choice. Ubuntu and it's various desktop variants (Ubuntu itself uses GNOME; Kubuntu uses KDE, and there are a few others) are excellent operating Systems and would be even if they were near the price point of windows itself; the fact that it's free is just a great bonus. But when speaking of Linux, one cannot forget that Ubuntu isn't the only one; there are a lot of distros, and honestly I think this is the greatest weakness. It's hard to really know exactly what a distro is without a good explanation; heck, even I'm not 100% on the differences, like wether they are really different operating systems or wether they can run a number of different programs, etc. Seems like it's more or less a choice of what kernel, desktop environment, and what programs are included, rather then anything that would be seriously different amongst them; once you get past that, it really just boils down to ease of install; most distro's have a super-easy installer wizard. Quote from: jkolak on January 19, 2010, 08:13:14 AM All good points. Yes, this hits upon an important point; while lots of Linux evangelists, open source zealots and so forth seem to think that the open source route is BEST for everyone, that really is painting everybody with the same brush; not everybody finds editing config files with vi to get their display driver working as an effective use of their time; It certainly can be rewarding, but when all you want to do is get something done it's in the way. Basically; not every enjoys the whole configuration venture; many people just want to use their computer to write their reports for their job. And honestly, the Linux devs are catching onto this, and I think they are certainly trying (well, some of them, there are still those that go "wouldn't it be cool if" and then go on to describe an essentially useless feature). Many distros are certainly hitting the "no need to be a expert" level of usability. they still have a way to go, though. Not that windows is perfect in this regard. It's really a function of complexity; sure, MS-DOS isn't really user friendly, but it had pretty easy to understand syntax, rules, and so forth. Windows at first was just an additional level of complexity on top of that, and things kind of snowballed from there; Sure it's pretty easy to use; which is the point. but the learning curve from being a run of the mill user to being "in control" and knowing what's going on is far steeper in windows then DOS.When I was doing my recent research, I stumbled across The UNIX-HATERS Handbook. Skimming through it I saw a lot of the kinds of things you are talking about. Wikipedia says the book is semi-humorous. Some of the complaints seem quite legitimate, and others seem extremist, and others more clearly tongue-in-cheek. I read a review, too, that said that Linux needs more consolidation before it can make more inroads into the masses. While Linux freedom is nice, like democracy, too much freedom is anarchy. I tried to take some cues from Linux users on the distros and ended up with Ubuntu on one of my drives. Successfully loading to a desktop is a serious issue because of the ones I have tried, only it and Freespire will do that, and, again, the issue is not important enough for me to get it running if it doesn't install right on the first shot. If it was mission critical and my life depended on it, that would be a different story. So I have a collection of CDs laying around from different distros that didn't work out. This one got me thinking: Quote It's really a function of complexity; sure, MS-DOS isn't really user friendly, but it had pretty easy to understand syntax, rules, and so forth. Windows at first was just an additional level of complexity on top of that, and things kind of snowballed from there; Sure it's pretty easy to use; which is the point. but the learning curve from being a run of the mill user to being "in control" and knowing what's going on is far steeper in windows then DOS. I realized that you are really right. In the name of user friendliness, we have ended up with quite a complex piece of technology! Well, it would be an easy way to run a computer if the under-the-hood stuff worked right all the time and didn't send beginners over here looking for help. The other factor is that Windows today is a feature-rich set of complex technology, so that even if things always work right, there are a multitude of places to explore and find things you are trying to do. It's like the complexity of modern word processors. When I first learned how to use one, I was in heaven just being able to cut and paste to save on excessive retyping. Bold, italic, underline and all that were icing on the cake. And I really thought I had it made when Word Perfect 4 came out with automatic indexing. I thought I'm going to keep this program around for when I write my books. Well, I haven't written any books yet, and besides not having that copy of Word Perfect anymore, it won't run on any of my current computers! |

Solve : Need help with back up? |

Answer» Hi - Pardon me Bobh, for butting in. I saw in the thread that Broni suggested some free backup software and went there. Imnoguru: think about the name. password, if it was saving the passwords, would it be called that? I can see how one might see it as "protecting" your passwords from getting lost, but in common parlance "password protection" means that a password is issued onto something so that only somebody knowing that password can ACCESS whatever is protected. In this case, the image file. Thanks Bobh for the reply, I see that BC_Programmer has the answer I was looking for. Thank you BC_Programmer. I thought I was on the right track... but as they say the only silly question is the one you don't ask. Bobh, I was looking through post for answers to questions, that I had been thinking of myself since obtaining my laptops. Thank you all. |

Solve : Windows 7 Product Key Issues? |
|
Answer» Does Windows 7 ALSO have issues with the product key having to match the edition like it did in Windows XP? I also heard that you can install any version (Home - Pro - Ultimate... ) of Windows 7 from any DVD because all versions have the same data files and the version installed is only dependent on the type of product key you enter. Don't want to step on Patio's toes but... The product is on the CD it's not every product on every CD and then unlock with a key... that WOULD be madness. You get one product per CD be it home, premium or business etc. There not all inclusive.I think you may have misunderstood Mulreay...i may not have been clear. If you purchase Win7 Home retail for example...there are 2 DVD's included...32bit and 64bit. The liscense works on either depending on what you install. You can't install both. Retail Win7 only contains 1 version per purchase.Quote from: patio on January 22, 2010, 05:34:09 PM I think you may have misunderstood Mulreay...i may not have been clear. No I read back my fault sorry..I was gun happy there. My bad Nnooo....my bad.....I insist ! So thne you can not install both 32bit and 64 bit, even if it is on the same machine? You can only have 1 install at a time...according to MS.Thanks for all the input guys.
