Solve : How do you specify wep key for wireless??

Answer»

I am new to Windows 7 and I am trying to figure out how to connect to my older Wireless B access point which has 128-bit wep ENCRYPTION, and on the taskbar by the clock there is a wireless nic icon that I select and it tries to connect and says that it is unable to connect to the access point that IT SHOWS as my actual access point.

It does not prompt me for the wep key to be able to connect to the access point. Anyone know where I go to set this up in Windows 7 Home Premium?

I would have expected to be able to go to wireless configuration wizard like Windows XP and specify the hex key or passphrase, but I CANT seem to find it. I am guessing that it is burried somewhere and someone might be able to point out where.I would really suggest using WPA as it is far more secure than WEP(irregardless of how many bits it is). If your current router doesn't support WPA then I strongly suggest replacing it.Thanks for that suggestion. I am very low risk for wardrivers etc as for I live somewhat isolated from the main town and neighbors are more than a 1/4 mile away. So ALTHOUGH WEP is vulnerable, the old Wireless-B Access Point still works well and I will use it until there is a bottleneck with my broadband service. The 10mbps is about equal to broadband service out this way.

I ended up finding a way to get it connected, whereas, I could not find the area to setup the passphrase to my access point in Windows 7, but found a website that had a javascript that could take in a passphrase and output the 128-bit hex key needed for the connection to my wireless access point. I found where I could manually type in the 26 character hex key that was provided by that javascript at that website ((which I copied a copy of it for OFFLINE passphrase execution )) and the 26 character key starting with 77: was the key I remembered seeing a ways back and I got connected.

When I get home tonight I will link that site here for anyone else looking for a way to convert passphrases to the hex equivilant. At the corporate PC I cant get there from here right now.

ThanksIf you do not have the script at hand, you can use the old 'DEBUG' command in the DOS emulation. It converts ASCII to hex

Code: [Select]
D:\$A>echo 12345678901234567890123456>help

D:\$A>debug help
-d
0B0E:0100 31 32 33 34 35 36 37 38-39 30 31 32 33 34 35 36 1234567890123456
0B0E:0110 37 38 39 30 31 32 33 34-35 36 0D 0A 34 00 FD 0A 7890123456..4...
It ends with the 0D 0A, which is the end of line. So the 26 chars end just before that. Yes, if you are in a rural area then WEP is more than sufficient. I'm pretty sure that you would notice someone sitting in your driveway intercepting your signals.

Solve : Internet Explorer problem?

Answer»

When I am using internet explorer 7 (because my computer won't let me download IE8 from the MICROSOFT website) sometimes when I try to exit a window, the window i tried to exit will pop up continually. I have not found a solution to this problem short of turning off the computer. TASK manager will not work during these occurences. This has HAPPENED twice so far and is very aggravating.Could you please explain in a LITTLE more detail? Not sure I follow - and is it always the same site? Is it a tab or a new window? What exactly happens? You need to get LEGIT 1st...that's probably 1/2 the reason for any issues...

Solve : Win vista with xp duel boot?

Answer»

What are the down sides for installing win xp on PC RUNNING VISTA for duel boot ? I just what to KNOW before doing it .Should I or not?The only downside is doing it. It's a bit more difficult to add an OLDER OS as a dual boot option than it is adding a NEWER OS. Once done, HOWEVER, there should be no downside whatsoever.

How long should updating computer take?

The OS is Windows 7 Home Premium. It may take several MINUTES, depending on number of updates, but not over an hour.

Solve : Win 7 kernel uses Linux??

Answer»

Hello everyone

At work someone brought an article implying Win 7 is USING a Linux kernel. That's one REASON why the Win XP compatibility issue. There have been two groups the MS bashers and the MS group. Some say Win 7 is nothing more then a Visa upgrade. While others say MS must change the their kernel to survive. I know MS has will continue to have problems with their BACKWARD APPROACH to security in the Desktop and Sever market. Also the way they approach with giving and restricting permission. Any truth to the Linux kernel?

The engineers that designed 7 may have looked at the Linux Kernel for pointers on how to make the Win 7 OS better, but I doubt by far that Bill Gates would use Linux because it would be like Micro$oft Merging with Apple in a 50/50 DEAL offer. NOT GONNA HAPPEN! ha ha

I dont doubt however that the engineers looked at the Kernel of Linux for pointers to make their OS better. Micro$oft in the past has cheated by stealing other people and corporations designs and twisting them enough to change the original product to a different enough product to avoid pattent infringement lawsuits. Linux being open source however would allow Micro$oft to mold it or less mold the original kernel without the threat of a lawsuit.Whoever told you Win7 is based on a Linux kernel needs medication...
The sooner the better.

no it didn't post. well i tried another hard disk and STILL it won't come on. I just had 7 running for 1/2 the day then I put on XP on a different partittionI FIXED the problem it was the HDD it was hooked up to a SATA connection plug but it was bad so the ticking was from the bsd connection with hard driveDid you put XP on first? You need to put the oldest OS on first. Do you have Sata connection? My hard drive was Sata. I just had a molix power connector. I had the ticking noise because I had an extion to convert my power to a sata connection. I removed the power Molix /sata connectio and directly connected the molix power connecter to my hard drive the noise WENT awayThat drive is getting ready to fail...backup what you can immediately.

Solve : Windows 7 Internet/Network Issue?

Answer»

I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on two computers, one is absolutely fine and working perfectly, the other has had some issues and still has a couple.
At first everything worked fine, but then the nvlddmkm.sys failed and meant I couldn't use drivers.
To resolve this I had to do a proper hard drive wipe (not the Windows one) and reinstall.
Now I can't use the network or internet, it has the yellow ! at the bottom.
I've tried diagnostics, they say that I should reset the router (doesn't work) and then that my computer is having trouble resolving my IP address.
After attempting to set my IP many times to the correct one, there was still no success.
I tried using an old network CARD (3Com 3C905C-TX-M) but found no drivers that would work.
I then tried going back to vista, which had the same network issue so I'm back on 7. Every function of the computer works apart from the internet, and I do already have all the LATEST nVidia graphics and chipset drivers installed.
It's not an old computer, as you can see from the specs.

Any help is greatly APPRECIATED, thank you,
Simon
I would get a brand new NIC card for about 15 Bucks...one with Win7 drivers.i was considering that, and also getting a cheap wireless card or usb.
and while i was out just now, i have got the nvlddmkm.sys error AGAIN.
that should probably be posted in the drivers section though.

oh and just to let you know, the network cable being plugged in to the motherboard is detected properly, it knows it is there and attempts connection but can't.Quote from: Blade285 on November 07, 2009, 08:15:34 AM

... the network cable being plugged in to the motherboard ...
So, your network adapter is onboard, right? You presently have no add-iin network card installed?

Have you visited the computer manufacturer's website to search for a driver?

I have Win 7 RC installed on a Compaq d530 CMT, which I'd guess is older than your computer. The d530 has an onboard network adapter which was recognized by Win 7 during installation with no need for me to search for a driver. This computer also has a Linksys LNE100TX NIC in it; for that, I did have to go Linksys website and get a driver. it does not need a driver, but i have nvidia chipset drivers for it (the newest ones, around the 15.49 or SOMETHING)
i have no extra network card, but as i said in the initial post i tried using one and could not find windows 7 compatible drivers.Quote from: Blade285 on November 07, 2009, 08:15:34 AM

Yes, I believe it's a drive issue. This might be helpful: http://www.vistaforums.com/Forum/Topic5276-21-1.aspxthanks for the link, but i've already tried all of the things in there.
i've currently just deleted the .sys file and can use it without any nvidia drivers. (and therefore not on the nice aero theme)
also, people in that topic seem to only have the problem intermittently, whereas i cannot enter windows at all, ever. it loads and then when the user logon screen is meant to appear it's either black or BSOD.

do you think it's still worth buying a new network and/or wireless adaptor? For 15 Bucks...my answer would be Yes.

Solve : Brother finally releases drivers for Windows 7?

Answer»

incase some of you might have been having issues with your brother printers, MFC printers, so on not loading on WIN7 with the Vista drivers, well Brother released the drivers and full software packages for what looks like all Brother Printers and Hardware.

Check out http://www.brother-usa.com/Support/?WT.svl=support for your driver incase you haven't gotten it yetI have a Brother MFC-790CW installed with Win 7 RC. In my case, Win 7 installed a driver without me using CD or downloading anything. I was surprised to see that.

But, thanks for posting that info. It may be helpful to folks trying to install CERTAIN models of Brother printers. ya it installs the driver, but not the software, the control center 3 wasnt compatible on win7 before release, so you wouldnt be ABLE to scan docs and so on...well mine was a scanner issue, so i just waited for the software release. but ive always been able to printAh, you're quite right about that. I can print from Win 7 but do not have all features that the full software installation provides, which I do have installed on my Win XP system and my Vista laptop.

I went to Brothers site and found the Full Driver & Software Package for my model for Windows 7. Thanks again for the info.

Edit: to change URL in link.

My USB drives, internet, and audio are not WORKING. Please assist! What exactly do you mean you are receiving almost no input? And did this just start or is it a new installation? This just started yesterday. My no input comment was because the computer won't recognize the USB ports, any audio input/output, or my internet connection(which is WIRED).Okay - what led up to this? In other words, what happened between the LAST time the system worked PROPERLY and the first time it did not (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?Never mind. After about 7 total reboots, it decided to run CHKDSK, which fixed the problem. Thanks for trying! So now there is input ? ?Yes. Solve : Lost all MP3 and WMA files while album folders remain!?

Answer»

Dear all

Operating VISTA 64 bit. I was simply dragging a picture off a USB stick into my pictures which was in the EXPLORE list on the left of the screen. A bit of finger trouble and i realised that my entire MUSIC folder had moved into the PICTURES folder. I tried moving it BACK but was repeatedly asked if i wanted to replace ONE folder with another etc. I admit i made a real mess and ended up with MULTIPLE music cascading folders none of which held any music. See the attached file to see the same mess i made with the PICTURES folder.

I now have the music folder and inside are all of the standard album folders with names of artists and albums but when you look inside all of the tracks have gone. I have tried searching the whole computer to no avail. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Grum

Solve : Setting to open windows fit to screen ??

Answer»

I'm using windows Vista and can't remember where the setting is to allow each window to open fit to screen-vs-partial screen?
MAXIMIZE window and close it. Vista is much better with remembering, than previous Windows version.
If any problem, maximize the window and close it while holding CTRL key.we're talking internet explorer and windows explorer windows, I take it.Yes this is an online game site Pogo using Internet Explorer 8 (click on "play as a GUEST" to see the window size I'm reffering to). The main page fills my screen but when I select a game to play, it opens in a new window that fills about 1/3 of my screen. The maximize button does nothing - minimize button minimizes it to the system tray area. I can increase the window size some by setting the display resolution lower, but this lowers the PICTURE quality and still does no fill the screen completely.

Thanks for the help!
If the new window won't maximize, it must be the game set that way.I was affraid of that. Oh well, maybe now I'll go get some higher powered eye glasses for my old eyes.
ALT+ENTER doesn't work?ALT + ENTER has no effect in this case.
I tried ALT + ENTER on other windows and it produces full screen. Selecting ALT + ENTER again RETURNS the window to the previous configuration.
GOOD information but not the culprit in this case.
Thanks for the reply though killerb255!

Solve : Folder Issues?

Answer»

Running Vista 64 bit and just starting today I can't rename or move folders. I'm pretty sure that means it's a registery key ISSUE but I don't know how to fix it, wondering if someone could please point me in the right direction please.

Thank you.If they are system folders you won't be able to move them.

Can you provide some more information on what you wish to do.No just folders I created, I can't rename them or move them into other folders I've created. I can drag them over and when I release them on the folder I want them to go to it doesn't do ANYTHING. When I try to rename them the "New Folder" becomes highlighted but nothing else. I can't type anything new.

Does that help? Are you logged on as an Admin or a User account ?
AdminTake ownership: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/Thanks but as for clarification by installing that it lets me take ownership of the specific file that is giving me issues now not ACTUALLY fixing what is the problem in the first place.

I don't want to have to do this every time I create a new folder so, I NEED a fix that actually solves my problem.

Or did I completely misread how that works? Cause it told me to uninstall it after taking ownership of SAID file.

Sorry if I'm making this complicated just trying to understand.Let's clarify.
Don't uninstall the tool. It comes handy.

Now, if you take ownership, does rename, move, etc. work?Ok sorry for the delay had to pick up my daughter.

Just as I thought there is no change so the ownership of the folder isn't the problem. So once again how do I fix the problem? I can't rename or move folders I've created.

You were supposed to try Last Good Configuration. This option is on the same menu as Safe Mode. Did you try it? What was the result?

Did you try Disk to Disk Recovery? Is it something you don't want to do? If you tried it, what was the result?

You have to do a better job of following instructions and giving DETAILED results of what happened when you tried it if you want help.

This does require a Vista installation disk. I know you don't have one. You need to borrow one. Microsoft is giving them away for customer service issues, but I don't know if they will give you one because they expect Acer to take care of you.

Acer will only sell you a restore disk for about $25. It will wipe your computer clean. The same as the Disk to Disk Recovery I told you to try. Did you try it?Quote from: jkolak on January 21, 2010, 12:19:00 PM

You have to have the same version as the version you are trying to repair.

It is expensive. So you might want to open a Support Ticket at Microsoft and beg them for one. I had a different kind of failure on Service Pack 2 installation. They PRACTICALLY begged me - twice - to send me one. FREE.

Solve : My beloved keyboard?

Answer»

I found a lovely old NMB keyboard RT6856TW. (Don't like the little black one I got with my new Dell computer). BUT, it is made with a PS-2, so I bought a converter that has one end that plugs into the computer on a USB connection, and the other end branches in two to connect the keyboard and mouse. I have no need for a PS-2 mouse so I don't connect that in, at first the light came on on the keyboard, but it won't type. The light doesn't stay on either, but even with it on it still will not type. Is there something I can download that will make this great keyboard work? Thanks every so much.

Yeah, looks like beautiful work. Counterproductive, though, to have a Contact form to fill out while simultaneously displaying the email address.I just bought one of those converters for a computer and it had the same problem. 192.168.x.x is typically a home network, and in fact I think somehow someone changed your DNS settings by accident. Try changing. Your DNS to: 208.67.220.220. That is for www.opendns.com. If your router allows for a secondary DNS, use 208.67.222.222.

Good luck!

Solve : Computer Restarts Again & Again After Reaching Configuration Page?

Answer»

My computer is an ACER Extensa 4630Z. It has 3GB of RAM and has a Dual Core Processor.

My computer keeps restarting after reaching the Configuration update page. On the page, it says,

"Configuring updates stage 3 of 3: 0% completed, please do not turn off your computer"

It stays at that page for a short while, after chick it goes back to the beginning where it displays the acer logo and the whole process is repeated.

This keeps occurring indefinitely. I only just found out about it(12/12/2009, about 8.30pm, GMT +8) and I don't know what to do. I've tried turning it off then turning it on again, after which I follow the start-up repair process where I restore my computer. This does not solve the problem.

My last actions were downloading and installing League of Legends and letting it run a Windows update, but I have no idea what the updates were for.

Can someone please help me? It appears the Windows Updates are not installing properly. At boot press F8 REPEATEDLY until you get to the startup options screen, then choose "Last Known Good Configuration" and reboot. Does that work? And what is your OS please?oh yeah, sorry about that. Windows Vista.

I found this article...

http://news.softpedia.com/news/Get-Vista-Out-of-the-Infinite-Reboot-Loop-Configuring-Updates-Stage-3-of-3-0-with-Vista-SP1-78933.shtml

I think it's the problem I'm having now, or at least most LIKELY to be my problem.

I'll see what I can do.HI! MICHELLEZEN
I have a WINDOWS VISTA ACER it do the same thing. it ben doing it for about 2 WEEK. have you fix it if so will you LET me no how please.

Yes michellezen. That's it. Follow the instructions in that article.

Solve : Performance problem on Win7, CPU, "50% Maximum Frequency"?

Answer»

Hi!

I have an annoying problem on windows 7 x64 using a Siemens Amilo Pa 1510 notebook.
specs: AMD Turion64 X2 TL-50 (2*1600MHz), ATI Radeon Xpress 1100 (256MB), 2 GB RAM, 120GB HDD

These mobile AMD series has some kind of special FUNCTION to reduce energy consumption, in order to do that it runs only at half capacity (2*800MHz).
The problem is, that this function in win7 is always turned on, as the Resource Monitor shows "50% Maximum Frequency". I can not get the processor to operate on maximum output.

In windows vista I could somehow trick that, switched to High-performance scheme if I remember well. In win7 it does not work.
I already read a LOT of forums and even asked friends for HELP, forumers had DIFFERENT problems, friends do not have any idea and I still can not find where change this setting to use the CPU at 100% maximum frequency.

Once I succeeded, but I am not sure what change solved the problem. I have disabled some power saver function in the PHOENIX BIOS but after a restart the problem exists again, however the function I changed in the BIOS did not changed back to its default value, so that does not work either.

If you have any idea according to this issue, please let me know, I will try everything that you post here.

Thanks in advance,
SzabolcsAccidently I found a solution.
If anyone gets this problem switch to "High-performance" mode at Power Options, then reboot and disable Power -> Long Battery Life option in the BIOS.

I have recently installed TuneUp Utilities 2010, that should have messed up my SETTINGS.

Solve : Blank Blue Screen?

Answer»

Okay, I have a PROBLEM involving my computer.

It's a newly built machine, say, about 2 weeks old. Custom built of course.

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit ULTIMATE edition.

The problem is that whenever I turn my computer on in the morning/afternoon after it's been shutdown for the night it eventually crashes and brings up a blank light blue-ish screen. No TEXT, nothing.

This USUALLY happens 5-10 minutes after I've been doing something like browsing the internet. And when I turn my computer back on, I get the "Windows has shut down unexpectedly" and I'm given the option to run in safe mode, normal, etc.

When checking the event logs, I'm always given a critical error when this happens:
http://i47.tinypic.com/15oikiw.jpg

I assumed this was a motherboard chipset error. Which would make sense, since I forgot to use the installation disc that came with my motherboard. So, I dig out the disc and insert it and install everything it recommends. So, here I am thinking I'm all set to go.. But, when I turn my computer on this morning, while checking the weather (snow ), my computer once again crashes into this blue screen. I don't know what to do.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. And I will supply any more details if needed.

Thanks.

Edit: Oh, I forgot to add, the Computer works perfectly after I start it up after the crash. Everything works fine, until I shut it down and boot it back up several HOURS later.Motherboard standoffs installed correctly ? ?

Thermal paste is applied. And I have all standoffs but one installed when putting everything together. Nothing seems loose, so I didn't think much of it.

Solve : Boot and Nuke?

Answer»

In order to get rid of Win 7 and install XP I ran "Boot & Nuke". When I installed XP all the files installed and then when it SAID it was starting Windows it stopped and I got the BSOD saying there was a problem.

What did I miss here? Should I have run some sort of software to FDISK the drive and then some sort of software to format?

Actually no ...the Win XP CD should have handled that...
Did you get a Win setup screen ? ?
How far into the install was the error ?
What was the BSOD message ?
Where is this XP CD from ?

PS. Is this still the Compaq laptop ?It is still the Compaq laptop.
There was no Windows setup screen.
It just began installing "files".
It stopped after all the files were finished and it said it was starting windows.
Then the BSOD appeared and said something to the effect that it couldn't continue because of a problem and to check for virus's etc.
My XP CD was purchased at a LOCAL PC store a COUPLE of years ago and is an OEM COPY and I have the legal activation info.
Could my copy be corrupted? If your copy was corrupt then it would say something that it couldn't find files. You did do the regular format right? No quick format? You made a new partition too right?

Solve : right mouse button?

Answer»

I am unable to use the right mouse button when on the internet. It works fine otherwise and the Control Panel SAYS it is working perfectly. For example, I can't cut, paste, or copy from the internet but I can in Word or any other such program.Have you tried reinstalling/updating the mouse driver?

Click on the START button on the desktop, type "device manager", when you see it in the menu, click on it once... When device manager opens, look where it says, "mice and other pointing devices". Click on the "+" sign next to that, right-click on the mouse in the submenu, click "uninstall" and restart the computer... Test out the mouse, and if the problem remains, go back into device manager and click on the "update" option instead of the uninstall option... If there is a better driver than the one you have, M$ will install it... If there isn't you'll continue to use the same driver you have now...

what is the make/model of the mouse? Sometimes M$ update isn't reliable... You may be able to find a better driver for it from the manufacturer website..

Does it work in IE?

I've just tried that after reading your question and the answer is: yes, it does. Thank you. Now how can I get to work in Firefox which is the latest version?Well, the only thing I can ghink of is there may be an add-on conflicting with the the mouse's proper operation. You might try Firefox Safe Mode and see what happens (http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Safe+Mode). If everything works properly you'll have to FIGURE out which add-on is causing the problem. Thanks, Allan, I've gone into Safe Mode and disabled all the add-ons and things are working perfectly. I'll re-add the various add-ons one at a time and see what happens. Once again, thank you very much. Problem solved.

Solve : Vista, brand new laptop and me? Suggestions to keep uninfected please.?

Answer»

Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my thread.

I have recently purchased three (3) new Laptops with Vista preinstalled and a host of other Dell programs. None of which I am familiar.

I would like to keep them as pure as driven snow (as the saying goes), if I can and wish to set them up so that I can learn vista and keep them safe from virus intrusion from the net.

At this stage I don't know too much about Vista, Laptops or Dell.
Generally speaking they are all clean and have McAfee preloaded as their choice of antivirus protection. I don't know if that is free or costs, or if this INSTALLATION is a paid account for a period of time then I take over update payments.

I would like to keep them virus free and set them up correctly. Can someone make some recommendations as to the best way to set them up please?

The first one is a Dell Inspiron 1545 and has wireless internet available, (which I am having trouble with.... The next thread that one)
The 1545 seems as though it might be my primary unit.

I intend to use it to access the web wirelessly in my home but there is always the opportunity to access the web outside. Say at Mc Donalds or somewhere else.

The second is a Dell Inspiron 1425 also wireless and the third is a Dell Inspiron 1440 wireless internet. They all have different features like SD reader cards, bluetooth and so on.

If you need specifics I can break it up individually for you so that someone might be able to assist me.

Just generally right now I would like to know how to best set them up, so that I can learn to use each of them.
Mind you the UAC is giving me the irrates for now but I'll deal with that issue a little later.

Thank you ImnoGuru. Those computers at a minimum need an anti-virus and an anti-spyware program installed immediately before they are exposed to the internet.

Check your Start Menu and Control Panel (Programs and Features) to see if you already have them installed. Often new computers at least come with a trial version. You can use the search function on this forum to read about people's feelings about the various free and paid programs available.

For a quick fix while you look for your preferred product, you can download Microsoft Security Essentials which is both anti-virus and anti-malware:

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/?mkt=en-us

Be sure you remove any existing anti-virus on your computer that you don't want. You cannot have two anti-virus programs installed.Quote from: jkolak on January 18, 2010, 04:29:16 AM

Be sure you remove any existing anti-virus on your computer that you don't want. You cannot have two anti-virus programs installed.
I believe you can have two anti-virus programs installed but you should not have two anti-virus programs running at the same time. So, as a general rule, it's best to only have one installed. That way, you don't need to fuss with settings to be sure one of them is not continuously running in the background while the other is.Thank you for your reply jkolak and soybean.

jkolak, I have only just heard of that program from microsoft. It seems it has certain advantages over other free programs, in that it gets more of the newer viruses that the others miss. Although McAfee is a very trusted brand too. If my McAfee is paid for say, 60 days to 1 year and then I take over a payment, I may as well use that till their expiry period at least. Give it a test so as to speak.

So is a firewall different to an antivirus program? and Is an Anti spyware different again?
And I need all three?

Then what is a firewall? Is McAfee not a firewall product?

A LOT of the programs on my laptop seem to be trial optioned such as the Office Home/Student, that's a 60 day trial version. So with my recent history with MSoffice, I may as well just delete that from the drive then and get OpenOffice.org. as recommended in a previous post, and that way I wont have future issues. (Thanks soybean).

Thank you ImnoGuruPardon me.
Now if someone gave me tthree new laptops,...
I would not put them on the internet.
Instead, I would use a older computer for internet until I was confident that I had very good Anti-Virus and Backup software on the new machines.
Like they say...
An Lance of Prevention...

Right now there is an inordinate amount of virus and orbiter evil activity going o on the internet. Mucho coming from distant lands.

Right. Download the installation files on an older computer and copy them to a CD for the new computers. Problem is, I think Avira, Avast, and AVG now use installers that download the files from the internet. If the trial version of the Anti-virus program is active on the new computers, it would, of course, be safe to use them on the net.

All that stuff that came on the new computer is called crapware. It's just propaganda to get you to spend more money. Also called foistware because I'm sure you didn't ask to have stuff put on there that will add to the price of your computers. Dump MS Office for OpenOffice, McAfee for Avira, etc.

The recent Google-China stuff in the news has led me to read a lot of other articles about malware activity by the Chinese govt and military, but the BIGGEST spike in malware activity comes from the high profits of selling ROGUE (fake) anti-virus software hijacking your computer.

I don't know if McAfee includes a firewall. Recommendations I have read on this forum are for Comodo Firewall, then 2 anti-spywares - Malwarebytes Anti-malware and SuperAntiSpyware - and then pick only one anti-virus between the three I listed above.Thank you Geek-9pm and jkolak for your comments, and thus I am here.

I understand, very well the difficulties with the internet and virus's.

I bought these laptops for work. What I didn't figure on was that I would have to set everything up from scratch. Windows Home was loaded on right to the stage that I had to agree to the EULA, so were other programs. I haven't been through the lot yet.

So far, I got off the net and tried to figure out and set up the laptop to work.

The lappies are all wireless and in looking at what they were and how to fly them, logged onto my home wireless network... (which was unprotected I might add ) and I realized that there would be some problems presented in a very short time if I continued with them on the net.

This next time I fire them up, will be the 4th time I have opened them up. So I am cautious at the moment of even starting them, until I know a little bit more about them and security, for the home router too for that matter. ( I have made a separate post about that here).
Unfortunately you have to start the computer to do that, and my main laptop (for me the Dell 1545) logs onto the network automatically. (I don't know why or how, but in fiddling with the settings of the laptop and the router, I got different results, from limited connectivity to none available, according to the laptop control panel).
You see I don't know anything of Vista or how to go through the programs on it to set it up.
In fact I don't even know how to delete anything on it yet!

Crickey I don't even recognize the start menu, and all the balloons keep fading away before I can read them? Whats that about? and this big thing on the top center of screen?

Anyway I digress... McAfee out, in with Super-antispy, AVG I'm familiar with.
Comodo for firewall... Hmmm does that mean I have to get it off of the net? I'll have to see what McAfee is all about then.. ( that just means I have to try to connect with the new settings on the router... something about enable AP.

How do I back up (well anything actually), the software? How do I do that please?

Thanks for the help my computer help mentors.
I'll be back later I'm sure.

Thanks again ImnoGuru
I'm going to get off this thread since it is going off topic now. I looked at your other post in networking, and I'll leave that to others as well since networking has me pulling hair at times myself. I have been using my LAN for 2 years now, but didn't have an initial learning curve because everything just worked when I set it up. Only recently have neighbors gotten on wireless such that I noticed that I needed to learn about the router's security settings to keep them off because I kept seeing their computers on my network! (while I wondered why my throughput was going down....)

I will mention that you don't delete programs with the trash can or the delete key. Go to the Control Panel and use Programs and Features to remove programs you don't want. You will get used to info balloons coming up on your System Tray and learn from them. A lot of your questions are answered in Help and Support on the Start Menu.

Best of luck with your computers.Thank you jkolak, I found your posts enlightening.
I found my router wasn't secure the same way... All of a sudden I had RUN out of data use available. Then found out neighbors had visitors with a wireless laptop that they downloaded heaps of games and cheats that weekend.
Getting a bit more wise to it all now though.

I am also getting use to using the help features as well thanks.Setting up WPAThe Mcafee protection you have is more than likely a trial. I bought a new dell laptop 32 days ago with windows 7 and it had Mcafee too. It was a 30 trial . I always use AVG free on all my machines, it works well and can be downloaded for free from "cnet downloads". As for spyware protection, a good free one is adaware and it is available from the same site.
AdAware is NOT a good utility - it's pretty much obsolete in fact. MalwareBytes & SuperAntispyware are good replacements. I'm not a big AVG fan either, but it's certainly better than McAfee.

Solve : Help setting up dual boot?

Answer»

Hello,
I would like to set up a dual boot with XP/7. I will be doing a clean install on virgin (brand new) drives. If at all possible I would like for the 2nd HDD to be a bootable mirror of the 1st HDD. Is this possible? If so is it easy enough for a novice? Here is my system specs: PS this is my first time building a computer.

Case: Thermaltake Element G
Mobo: Gigabyte GA-MA790XT-UD4P
CPU: Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition 3.4 Gb
CPU Fan: Cooler MASTER Hyper 212 Plus
Memory: 2X Mushkin 2GB DDR3 1333
PSU: Thermaltake Toughpower XT 750
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 5750 1 GB GDDR5
ODD: 2X Samsung DVD-W Supermulti SATA 22X Lightscribe
HDD: 2X Western Digital Caviar Blue 320Gb
OS: Windows XP Professional 32 Bit,Windows 7 Ultimate 32 BitYes, you can do it. But not as easy as you might wish.
Do you have lots of free disk space?
Do you have a third drive available?
One method is to install XP first using about 25% or less of the space you have. Install Win7 next.
After that you can 'clone' the drive. But before you do that, make sure you have the recovery DVD for Windows 7. You make it inside of Windows 7. And backup Windows 7 onto PART of the third drive, if you have one.
The 'clone' process will likely fail. So you have to recovery the Win7 install using the recovery DVD.
This is based only on my very limited experience trying to do this.

I now have a system that boots Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Vista. I had to remove the Windows 7 install, but I will do it again later.

My other PC boots XP and Windows 7 after I did a repair from a 'clone' failure.
It gets complicated!
Hmmmm, definitely too complicated..... Would it still be feasible to just set up a plain old dual boot with the 2 hard drives ? PS I have plenty of space as both 320 Gb drives are brand new and haven't even been formatted yet. (All I have at this point is the case, one of the optical drives, both hard drives, the CPU fan and the video card. The PSU and the Mobo/CPU/Memory combo have all shipped but haven't arrived yet.)

PS does this look like a decent build?Quote

PS does this look like a decent build?
Looks great!
And YES. use two drives for your dual boot. With Vista and Win 7 the third party HDD clone programs are near useless.

Here is my current plan:
1 st Drive. IDE 160MB, partitions for Windows 2000, Windows XP, DATA, My Documents and Backup.
2 nd Drive. SATA 40 GB, partitions for Vista and Windows 7.

I have spare 250 GB drive and some other drives I can put in the Mobile rack and tray if needed. And yes, the BIOS will let you boot many sources. I just discovered that mine will even find my new USB external DVD Burner and boot from it! And this is not a new machine at all! CHECK your BIOS.

In my BIOS I can hit F8 and it will give me a boot menu.
If I boot the first drive, I get the standard XP boot menu.
When I boot the second drive I get the Windows 7 menu for
either VISTA or Win 7

The 160 GB has nuff free space for backups. Windows 7 likes the backup to be on another physical HDD. Good idea.

So far I have put Windows 7 as a dual-boot on two computers and it works fine.

Hope this is of some help.My plan currently is Drive 0: 25 Gb partition for Xp / 30 Gb partition for 7 / 130 Gb Programs /130 Gb Data
Drive 1: 100 Gb Music / 100 GB photos / 120 GB Misc. Does this sound like a good plan?Looks great. Remember that XP goes first. If you ever have to repair the XP portion, you will also have to fix the Windows 7 boot loader. Other people know how to do this, I am still learning. I think that is some way to make a backup of the boot sector. Not sure about that.

I know nothing about the Mac. Wish I had one.Quote from: RudeDawg on November 01, 2009, 09:02:17 AM
Drive 0: 25 Gb partition for Xp / 30 Gb partition for 7 / 130 Gb Programs /
So, you're going to install programs for both XP and 7 on the 130 GB partition? I guess I see no problem with that, although I think I'd probably make the OS partitions larger and install programs on the same partition as the OS. That's just my opinion. Otherwise, the plan looks fine.Quote
So, you're going to install programs for both XP and 7 on the 130 GB partition?
Its worth a try. Some programs want the user data to be in the same directory tree as the program. So this would fix the problem of having two sets of user data for such programs.LOL, now I'm thoroughly confused...... Perhaps I would just be better off running 7 because Ultimate does have the XP Mode. My main concern is having my printer work and Office Xp (2002). Office 2002 I'm sure is a bit too old for Windows 7. Will XP Mode allow me to run Office XP?Sorry if I and Geek-9pm caused some confusion. Your partitioning plan would work fine if you want to dual boot.

Per http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/GettingReadyforWindows7/thread/abbe2f98-569e-4123-b0c7-2eb785f13315, Office XP will run with Windows 7.

What printer do you have? Not a problem, I are easily confused. (lol) I'm thinking I'll probably just run 7 Ultimate and save my XP Pro for my old machine. If Windows 7 will run Office XP that is great! Presently I have a Canon Pixma MP830 but I'm seriously considering going to a black and white laser printer since I rarely print anything in color and this thing seemingly evaporates the color ink in no time. Each toner cartridge costs about 2 dollars more than I pay for each of my 5 Canon cartridges and will last probably 5 times as long.

Thank you for your input!!!That Canon printer is not very old, is it? You can get a Win 7 driver for it at http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&tabact=DownloadDetailTabAct&fcategoryid=334&modelid=12804. Click the drop down box for OS and select Windows 7.Thanx Soybean, that'll make life bearable until I can afford a B/W Printer!

Solve : Slow internet in windows 7?

Answer»

I just installed a dual BOOT of xp and 7 and my internet is very slow in windows 7. I have tried alot to fix it. I got the latest drivers, turned off automatic updates, turned off remote differential comparison. I also typed netsh int tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled in command promt which ACTUALLY made it normal for a little, but it then went BACK to slow shortly afterwards. My download speed in 7 is 30 kb/s and in xp its around 300 kb/s. My wireless is a usb-G802. Although the funny thing is that in 7 my signal is much better and I pick up more networks. I LIKE windows 7 a lot more then xp, so any help would be greatly appreciated. For reference, what is your Dload speed when you tie straight to the router with a cable? If it is about the same as XP, then that could mean an issue with the wireless driver in Windows 7.
Well the router is in my moms ROOM so I can't really hook it up.Why have you made all those random network settings changes ? ?

Remove the network connection and start over...Because I searched my problem and these where the solutions I found

Solve : Internet Stopped Working?

Answer»

Hi.

My internet stopped working on my Vista, but it's not the ACTUAL DSL's problem, because this computer obviously can connect to the internet.

The computer I'm talking about is a Gateway Netbook with Vista BASIC. I've gone through one of these internet problems before, which was solved within a few seconds with the commands "NETSH winsock reset" and "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt".

Now, neither is fixing the Vista. I have a system restore point before the internet problem, but I really do not want to resort to that until I've eliminated all other possibilities.

Interesting note: when I try "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt", it says "Access Denied" for the "Reset Echo" line, even when I run cmd.exe elevated.

So, help anyone?

Thanks. N o, I have no help. But may I ask a question?
Could you tell me if that is the method your DSL company recommends when vista will not connect?
My experience has been with XP. I just got Vista and Windows 7 and never had to do whet you did. But my system is not a net book. It is a plain old P4 system. But runs fine on Vista. I am surprised to hear you are having trouble with netbook. I would think by now those kind of problems would be a thing of the past Do you think there may be a hardware glitch on your machine? I have worked with electronics for years and know there is a small but real chance of new equipment having early problems due to manufacturing issues.
Scout2 -
I have no help either, however I had the same problem a few days ago. I did not know how to fix it so I just went to something else and the next day it had FIXED itself. At least it is now working. Bob Quote from: scout2 on October 31, 2009, 05:40:48 PM

How do you connect to the Internet with your netbook, wired or wireless? Do you have a wireless router?

Solve : Want XP instead of Win 7?

I think PROTECTION of the OS is a big issue in today's security environment. Coming from the early days of computer where you were the master of your OS and hard drive, I first resented all the permissions problems, but since everyone else on the net wants to be master of my computer, I see that XP is more vulnerable.

Yeah, I think a lot of people think of it like "protecting the user from themselves" like for changing settings; in fact it is protecting the user from, as you say, other programs and malware that wants to take control of the system.

Actually, Linux has been a strong proponent of the same thing Vista is only introducing now; basically, you don't run the desktop as root (heck, you try to avoid running anything as root if you can get away with it) of course the Linux and Windows markets are are far DIFFERENT demographic and will be until the developers behind linux start adding serious features rather then making things they think might be fun to implement.Right. I've explored migration to Linux and find it still a long way from being a serious end-user tool in SPITE of it's dominance in professional IT work.

Linux also touts itself as malware resistant, but I can't help but wonder on all the recent press on malware attacks on commercial and government systems which are bound to be a high percentage of Linux based networks.Quote from: jkolak on January 19, 2010, 06:01:20 AM
Linux also touts itself as malware resistant, but I can't help but wonder on all the recent press on malware attacks on commercial and government systems which are bound to be a high percentage of Linux based networks.

With Vista I'd say they are on a pretty even tier malware wise, excepting that there is far more malware created for Windows solely because the idea of malware is basically to infect as many machines as possible.

Many Linux lovers who bash windows complain that UAC is the same as something on Linux called "graphical Sudo" of course, they forget the mention which of the kazillion distributions each of which can use one of around 10 or 20 different desktop environments Microsoft copied from. Not to mention that before Vista these same Linux heads were complaining that XP by default ran everybody as admin; now MS fixes that and they still complain.

Same goes for compatibility; with XP, they worked harder on making sure win9x programs and even 3.1 apps ran alright; in fact, they patched around issues with popular programs, just to get them working. Since if you upgraded from win98 to XP and suddenly your word processor or something didn't work, you would blame the OS, not the crappy programmers of the word processor. This was essentially the "bloat" that people were complaining about for so long; so they pretty much removed all that for Vista, and people still complain.

Yes, Vista installs are going to be bigger then XP installs. IS this surprising? Should we all call XP and win98 and win95 bloated because we can compare them to the 15MB it takes to install windows 3.1? Not really. I mentioned before that the ACTUAL "cost" of the space being used by Vista or 7 on a modern PC as opposed to to the cost of space on an older PC was less; we now have more disk space and it costs less then it did, and the OS install takes up a smaller fraction of a less expensive disk. All good points. I certainly don't want to return the (dis)favor and bash Linux - I can certainly respect anyone with the determination to master a complex OS just as being an OS operator has taught me to respect the intelligence and higher education of computer engineers, and being a successful home mechanic has taught me to respect the same in automotive engineers.

And being on a budget, a free OS was certainly appealing - And with the Mac-like talk of Windows malware being a good reason to switch, I certainly considered it. I certainly have tried many times over the years. I bought Linux for Dummies around 1998 or so, but couldn't see learning new terms for the things I had already learned in DOS. I came into computers in 1984 and caught the tail end of DOS and the beginning of WIMP and started the latter with an Atari ST, called "Jackintosh" (after Jack Tramiel) since it was seen as an improvement over the Mac of 1985. OS on a ROM chip seemed like heaven at the time for user-friendliness. But you didn't learn till later that the rest of the OS was left out, and when GDOS came out it had to be loaded on the hard drive, and by the time all the boot-time utilities came out, it was just as hair-pulling as Windows on DOS, especially when the net got started and you had to write all the networking protocol scripts manually.

After taking a good look at Linux and thinking M$ was getting too much of my budget, I had to admit that the thing about Windows is that 99% of the time, things just work without having to be a guru. In Linux when something didn't work, I submitted a bug report. Then someone from customer service would email me and ask if I had installed the flash plugin, and another if I had installed the mp4 codec. In Windows, if you are missing something, it will usually tell you and ask if you want to install it. So I suppose M$ deserves their compensation for bringing this degree of usability to the masses - yet as the help boards on this site show, computers of any kind are still a long way from being a true consumer appliance like a dishwasher or television.

My personality is split between the need for an appliance that doesn't need attention, that I can operate without getting under the hood and do my tasks without distraction on the one side, and then the closet geek side of me wants to dig in and understand all of this. All of these thoughts are beginning to gel in my mind in a firm direction, and I am set to commit to Win7 on all machines. Exploring Linux and back-support for XP are going to be in VirtualBox. So there I am....I like to explore different Operating Systems as well, but I always seem to encounter issues installing linux on my older machines (to be fair I also have issues with most versions of windows on them too; I just am not very good with Linux, at least not quite enough to know all the ins and outs of the various commands.

Back in the DOS days when CLI was the main interface and the real debate was really between Command.com and the various Linux shells, one thing that was hotly debated by the geeks on both sides was nearly a exercise in triviality; the way that wildcards were expanded.

Most linux shells expanded, for example, * to be all files in a directory it passed it to a program; so the program would never actually see any wildcards at all. This had a benefit in that the program only had to handle lists of filenames, and not actually parse wildcards.

However, the problem with this is that the program cannot really know when a wildcard was used; when you use, for example, del *.* on DOS, you get a warning (well, actually, that wasn't until DOS 5, IIRC) but with most linux shells, rm * gave no warning and deleted everything.

Now, of course, this isn't really a bad thing in and of itself; just be sure of what your doing. the problem is that many seemingly minor typos in commands can cause an errant * to get into a destructive command, and POOF! the files are gone.

Either way, it was extremely trivial and certainly not debated by the masses, just the hardcore nerds, and it was really not something that could be won for one side; they both had their strengths; Linux is mostly for the programmer, so making the creation of C programs easier is a pretty easy choice.

Ubuntu and it's various desktop variants (Ubuntu itself uses GNOME; Kubuntu uses KDE, and there are a few others) are excellent operating Systems and would be even if they were near the price point of windows itself; the fact that it's free is just a great bonus. But when speaking of Linux, one cannot forget that Ubuntu isn't the only one; there are a lot of distros, and honestly I think this is the greatest weakness. It's hard to really know exactly what a distro is without a good explanation; heck, even I'm not 100% on the differences, like wether they are really different operating systems or wether they can run a number of different programs, etc. Seems like it's more or less a choice of what kernel, desktop environment, and what programs are included, rather then anything that would be seriously different amongst them; once you get past that, it really just boils down to ease of install; most distro's have a super-easy installer wizard.

Yes, this hits upon an important point; while lots of Linux evangelists, open source zealots and so forth seem to think that the open source route is BEST for everyone, that really is painting everybody with the same brush; not everybody finds editing config files with vi to get their display driver working as an effective use of their time; It certainly can be rewarding, but when all you want to do is get something done it's in the way. Basically; not every enjoys the whole configuration venture; many people just want to use their computer to write their reports for their job. And honestly, the Linux devs are catching onto this, and I think they are certainly trying (well, some of them, there are still those that go "wouldn't it be cool if" and then go on to describe an essentially useless feature). Many distros are certainly hitting the "no need to be a expert" level of usability. they still have a way to go, though. Not that windows is perfect in this regard.

It's really a function of complexity; sure, MS-DOS isn't really user friendly, but it had pretty easy to understand syntax, rules, and so forth. Windows at first was just an additional level of complexity on top of that, and things kind of snowballed from there; Sure it's pretty easy to use; which is the point. but the learning curve from being a run of the mill user to being "in control" and knowing what's going on is far steeper in windows then DOS.When I was doing my recent research, I stumbled across The UNIX-HATERS Handbook. Skimming through it I saw a lot of the kinds of things you are talking about. Wikipedia says the book is semi-humorous. Some of the complaints seem quite legitimate, and others seem extremist, and others more clearly tongue-in-cheek.

I read a review, too, that said that Linux needs more consolidation before it can make more inroads into the masses. While Linux freedom is nice, like democracy, too much freedom is anarchy. I tried to take some cues from Linux users on the distros and ended up with Ubuntu on one of my drives. Successfully loading to a desktop is a serious issue because of the ones I have tried, only it and Freespire will do that, and, again, the issue is not important enough for me to get it running if it doesn't install right on the first shot. If it was mission critical and my life depended on it, that would be a different story. So I have a collection of CDs laying around from different distros that didn't work out.

This one got me thinking:

Quote

I realized that you are really right. In the name of user friendliness, we have ended up with quite a complex piece of technology! Well, it would be an easy way to run a computer if the under-the-hood stuff worked right all the time and didn't send beginners over here looking for help. The other factor is that Windows today is a feature-rich set of complex technology, so that even if things always work right, there are a multitude of places to explore and find things you are trying to do. It's like the complexity of modern word processors. When I first learned how to use one, I was in heaven just being able to cut and paste to save on excessive retyping. Bold, italic, underline and all that were icing on the cake. And I really thought I had it made when Word Perfect 4 came out with automatic indexing. I thought I'm going to keep this program around for when I write my books. Well, I haven't written any books yet, and besides not having that copy of Word Perfect anymore, it won't run on any of my current computers!

Hi -
I followed the suggestions and downloaded Macrium Reflect. I have copied the instructions but they have some instructions that don't exactly match what comes up on my monitor. I get the idea and I think I can figure it out. But a couple of questions to get me started. I am running Vista Home Basic 32 bit. My hd has 2 partitions: C & D. Do I want to back up both of these? I guess I want the back up put on DVDs or is there someplace to put it? If I use DVDs should they be formated before inserting them (I'm assuming I will need several) or can I use non-formatted ones? Please bear with me, I'm on a learning curve. Thanks Bob Concentrate on backing up C: for now...D: may be a hidden recovery partition for restoring the machine back to DAY One status...if that's the case there is a different method for creating the Recovery CD's...Patio -
OK I will try C when I get through running my security. I want to make sure all the bad stuff is gone before I try a back up. Thanks Bob Good idea Bob...you're an astute Student !Patio -
I did it!!! I ran my security and called up Macrium Reflect and followed the instructions (guessing at a couple) and it ran a back up of "C". It took 3 discs. They need not be formatted before as the program will do it when you insert a new disc. I am not going to try to back up "D" as it is the registry and several people have told me to leave that alone. If anything happens to "D" I have a disc to use to start over. Thanks for your help and TIME. BobExcellent ! !

Hardware - Device driver recovery - eMachines User Guide
Applications and Drivers external media - Create Application and Drivers recovery disc

It sounds like I can GO to these programs to recover somethings. I have not tried any

Imnoguru: think about the name. password, if it was saving the passwords, would it be called that? Solve : Display problem help!!!?

Answer»

Ok so I have windows Vista. My monitor wouldn't turn on, so I had to send it in to get fixed. Instead, they sent me a new monitor. Pretty sure it's an HP 2009m...or something like that.

Now my problem is, webpages aren't displayed properly. For example, most colours are non-existent now, some tabs are invisible and I have to hover over them to find them etc.
To use a more specific example, I frequently go to www.mmaspot.net. If you go there, you'll notice that the website is mostly red, black and gray. It used to be like that for me as well. However, now it's just white, with missing tabs. I asked on their forums if anybody knew my computer problem, and unfortunately nobody could help. I found this forum, and I'm hoping it can be the solution to all of my problems

I tried to go to control panel > display > change resolution and all of those options, and NOTHING worked.
HELP PLEASE!Welcome to CH.
We are ready to help.
A question, Have you spoke to the PEOPLE that did the job?
They should have given you a CD with information about how to set up the new monitor. If so, did you try the install CD they gave you with the new monitor.
Can you please check and see what is the name of the monitor?

In Vista you can open the Device Manager and see if the new monitor is installed.
Screen Short of Device manager in Vista:

In my system it shows generic devises. But for the monitor you have it needs to be the specific monitor, a special driver is needed.
Well, I didn't talk to the people who did the job because when the new monitor was ready, I went and PICKED it up and installed it myself. I didn't mess with any of the details, I just plugged it in and connected it.

I followed your advice and checked the device manager, and it said that the monitor is properly installed.

Good, that is a new monitor and HP does not indicate any problem.
My GUESS is heat the driver for the Video card is not right.
First try other resolutions within the RANGER of the LCD monitor.
Does that help any? If not, next ask he Device manager to re - install the video driver.

Solve : fingerprint sensor not working on windows 7?

Answer»

I recently installed WINDOWS 7 on a dual BOOT configuration with Vista on the other partition on my HP dv4 1030ee laptop. Everything seems to work fine and win 7 is great, but there is one important problem. On vista the fingerprint sensor works fine and on windows 7 it is not recognized. i THINK the DRIVERS are not installed for win 7 and so i did try to find the drivers on hp's website but still it doesnt work. I really want the fingerprint sensor to work on 7 as i use that for logging in to windows...but cant find the Digital persona software and drivers for windows 7. can someone please help me fix this? thanks.Have u went to download.com and looked for the necessary drivers?yes i just checked but did not manage to find any...

Are vista drivers compatible with Win 7 drivers, you could try making a backup of the drivers from the vista install and installing them to Win 7. Search google for a program called Double Driver Double Driver did the trick! I also found the setup for digital persona on vista which helped as well!
Thanks nothlit!

Solve : Windows 7 Product Key Issues?

Answer»

Does Windows 7 ALSO have issues with the product key having to match the edition like it did in Windows XP?

I see some advertised as working with both Retail and Upgrade, as well as both 32 bit and 64 bit.

I also heard that you can install any version (Home - Pro - Ultimate... ) of Windows 7 from any DVD because all versions have the same data files and the version installed is only dependent on the type of product key you enter.

Is this INFORMATION correct?

Thanks.I can only speak for the 32/64bit scenario...1 product key works for both versions.
In the retail ver. there is 1 DVD for each but only 1 key is needed...

Don't want to step on Patio's toes but... The product is on the CD it's not every product on every CD and then unlock with a key... that WOULD be madness.
You get one product per CD be it home, premium or business etc. There not all inclusive.I think you may have misunderstood Mulreay...i may not have been clear.

If you purchase Win7 Home retail for example...there are 2 DVD's included...32bit and 64bit. The liscense works on either depending on what you install.
You can't install both.

Retail Win7 only contains 1 version per purchase.Quote from: patio on January 22, 2010, 05:34:09 PM
