Solve : want xp?

Answer»

i bought this dell laptop used and it came with windows vista basic...but i want windows xp. can this b done? if so..how?Find out if your hardware is COMPATIBLE. If so, purchase Windows XP.

If your system runs with Vista then it will run with XP. You'll need to purchase an XP CD. Then format your hd. Then boot to the XP CD and install.may need SATA drivers.
I've seen many of the newer laptops that came factory installed with Vista and have non-existent XP drivers...so it won't always work.
Best bet is to check with Dell.
If you enter your Service Tag # it will list all available drivers for that machine...if there are no XP drivers then you're outta luck.Quote from: patio on October 24, 2009, 07:39:07 AM

This is why I wrote what I did before.http://cgi.ebay.com/New-Microsoft-OEM-Software-WIN-XP-PRO-MUI-SP3-OEM-CD-1P_W0QQitemZ130334740652QQcategoryZ88433QQcmdZViewItem?VER=single&POS=viewandbid&viewandbid=130334740652GoTTi,
That eBay item is, IMO, overpriced.

Here is a possible idea that would be a dark LEGAL solution.
Go buy an old junk Dell that has the original COA and OEM disk of XP.
Junk the old PC and install the XP on your new machine.
I believe this is legal, but it is on the dark side.

Be aware that, as Patio said, new Laptops have hardware that is not XP compatible. I did a rant on this awhile back. I suggest you borrow a Dell OEM XP from a friend and see if it works. You can buy a COA Product KEY for a Dell for much less that the Retail XP.Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 24, 2009, 04:06:04 PM

No. It's legal. There is nothing binding a particular copy of windows to any particular Computer, just so long as the number of installations does not exceed the number of licenses (MS MAKES no distinction over the particulars of the machines running them)Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 25, 2009, 09:27:45 AM

I tend to disagree - but I certainly wouldn't bet a lot of money one way or the other. All this is irrelevant if the OP does not take the time to find out if the machine has XP Drivers...
This is especially critical on laptops for them to run properly...if at all.that first ebay link was for pro edition...

home is usually $100 or less...

http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=m38&_nkw=winxp+home+oem

use that link and just buy a winxp oem from there, and your good. or goto your local Fry's or any computer store and ask them for a WinXP Home OEM

Solve : Monitor issue?

Answer»

Hi,

I have Windows 7 PC, the video card is a nVidia 7300 GT, it has a DVI, VGA and a S-video output.
Both DVI and VGA work great in my dual SCREEN configuration. I found a S-video to VGA ADAPTOR so I hooked it up to the S-video output in the hope that I can have a third monitor, but I don't seem to get any SIGNAL from the S-video out. My question is is it even possible to have a three monitor system on a single video card?

Thanks. That's going to be according to the capabilities of the video card. I would suggest you visit the nVidia web site and read the features on the card. Your card's manual may tell too. If you don't have it, you can likely download a manual there too.

Also check your card's driver utility software. On my dual monitor card, all the configuration settings were there, but the default was one screen.

Solve : Sound spoilt in fullscreen mode?

Answer»

On a friend's compter who has installed win 7, it wortks fine the only problem she is having is that when she plays videos online e.g. youtube, googlevidoes the sound becomes fuzzy. The sound plays fine outside of vidoes online, she can listen to music in WMP and watch movies and the sound is fine.

The sound in youtube plays fine in normal mode but when she switches to fullscreen it becomes fuzzy and when she switches back into normal size the sound works fine again.

I have uninstalled the flash player and reinstalled but nothing and I have checked her sound card in device MANAGER and that looks fine, I tried to see if there was updates for her onboard soundcard but WINDOWS could not FIND any.

She is using the LATEST firefox and she tried videos in IE but still the sound is bad in fullscreen.Okay I solved it, I disaled hardware acceleration and that seemed to do the trick

Solve : Please explain to me how IP works?

Answer»

Just wondering how an IP ADDY really works.

If I create a hotmail address on my laptop, then I am on another computer using a hotels wireless i send an e-mail from the hotmail account how does the IP get tracked?

Can it get traced to my laptop the second laptop or the wireless feed from a hotel.

We are having this debate at work today and I would like some light on the subject??google is your friend:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address

http://www.wikihow.com/Trace-an-IP-Address

and others I'm sure...

hotmail needs to no your IP for you to receive any web page from it's servers. the browser SENDS this. The server logs it when you send a message. So hotmail keeps track of it when it is sent from the computer not the wireless feed?? What if you are using hotmail from multiple computers? Does it keep track of IP's from each computer?the "wireless feed" or whatever you are using for a connection SERVES as the conduit between the browser and the Web Server.

An E-mail has a header, which contains the IP address it was sent from. Hotmail gathers this when you send an e-mail. Nothing is "kept track of", but rather the IP is in the E-mail and the E-mail is sent, so it's source is known.Another debate we are having....can an IP number be changed on a computer??Anyone??Read here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address#Static_and_dynamic_IP_addressesLooking for english terms...... It is written in English. Gee THANKS....Here are a few videos you can watch to help you understand networking.

http://www.professormesser.com/2009/01/24/professor-messers-free-comptia-a-certification-training-course-networking/At one time the IP address was the only thing we cavemen had to USE the internet. Then somebody invented the alphabet and somebody said 'why not just use names on the internet'.

So nowadays the can have lots of stuff on just one IP address.

And then there are proxies. Let's not talk about that!

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and NOTIFY you if a solution is available." I can print other things from the screen but not email. One thing I notice is that the email I am TRYING to print is that it is so big it runs off the right side of the screen. I don't know how to reduce the size so that the entire email will be on the screen. As far as I can tell the Internet explorer is working except this one item. Any help is appreciated. Solve : Windows 7 Downgrade To XP - Hard Drive Not Found?!?!?!?

Answer»

Since the other mod closed the other thread for "copyed software" and Did not give me a change to reply, Im having to create a new thread.

To the Mod: How in the name of hells flaming bells is paying for a download and downloading the operating system LEGALLY FROM MICROSOFT copying?

To the person who thinks this is in the wrong Place: I dont think its in the wrong place, As it works fine with windows 7, and im downgrading from windows 7, If it is wrong, Please move to XP.

To the Helper:

I recently had some troubles - Wondering why windows XP was not a Install option when opening the wizard - I needed to run as an admin.
Now, Another issue, It says it CANT find a hard drive! So, I wiped the hard drive so it has no trace of windows on it, Run the XP wizard from cd and it says it cant find it again! I know its there - Windows 7 wizard picks it up!

Help = How can i get XP install wizard to find my hard drive?

Thanks groovyPlease start again from the beginning and tell us what your problem is. THANK you.Hello, OK.

- I put in the windows XP install disk i burnt from the download i payed for (MODS: LEGALLY FROM MICROSOFT!).

- It scans thru some files on the bottom and loads things like windows executable, ECT

- It tells me it cannot detect the hard drive

Is it a driver problem?1st post you stated it was an .iso from your buddy...
Now it's 1 you paid for.

Which is it ? ?

No need to rant about the Forum Rules. They are there for a reason.

And yes it was me who closed the original Topic.Okay, I'm going to stay away until you guys resolve this issue I paid my mate to get it > He made it into a ISO > Sent it to me > I BURNED it onto disk, Still being VALID and Genuine.

No cracks or whatever there CALLED or invalid rubbish - My Computer geek freind said its ok as its from the real valid download and its still valid just a different way to use it.

Lol Allan, Might be a long time, Moderators unless on a specific forum, Monitor the whole forum so could be a while before He comes back to this thread patio's good - he's watching. And to be honest, I'm sorry to say this does not sound like a legitimate disc to me either.Well my mate might be a liar but i did not know did i!

I dont see how changing a exe into a iso and back again is not legal??

Still the exact thingFeel free to PM me with the details of where this .iso is from...you can't even DLoad an XP from MS anymore so i'd be interested in the full details.

patio. But you could download it in 2002 lol this ISO is many years old - Just got a new hard drive, SATA and it dont like to work on it :/

What do i need to put in this PM?AFAIK, you need drivers for the XP setup to detect SATA drives.

Try looking on your motherboard manufacturers website. The hard drive is discontinued and on manufacturers website it does not have the driver - So it MUST be motherboard, After this, what then?

Solve : Problems accessing website?

Answer»

My father has set up a security system and wants me to be able to view/access his private webpage for this system. HOWEVER, when I type in the IP address it either gives me "page cannot be displayed" or it gives me a list of sites to choose from.

We have gone in and enabled Active X functions but it still won't bring me to the page I need. I also turned off the FIREWALL and still no luck. When I make these changes my computer also doesn't like it and almost forces me to disable everything again GIVING me security warnings.

I am running Windows Vista and using an EMachines computer. Don't know what to do as I am sure there is something blocking the access within my computer.
My father set up all three of his computers with no PROBLEM so I am confused.....Please Help!!!
Thank you;Are you running off a router? Is his website through a VPN?

Solve : My URL bar still shows addresses I deleted. Have tried everything!?

Answer»

OK, so I have no idea where my question should go.... so I apologize if its in the wrong section. I also apologize because my terminology is not going to be correct, I'm not much of a computer gur.

My computer:
HP Pavillion Notebook PC
Windows Vista
IE 7

My problem:

My ADDRESS bar still shows addresses that were DELETED LONG ago. As in when I start to type a similar address they still show up. They are just completely randomn URL's also...LIKE google.com/search:cmt top 20. and such.

Also, for some reason when I type in "c" in my address bar, it comes up with a list of some things n my C drive. C/users/Adam/ etc.....is what they look like. Why on earth would my address bar show stuff in my C drive? Is it because they are all things I have downloaded? Anyway.... I deleted these files from my documents, but they still show up in my address bar!

How can I completely clear out my address bar?

I have cleared history and cookies/temp. folder, I run a spamware program, and I downloaded a CC cleaner program to try to KILL these pesky URL's with no luck. I can't find them anywhere on my computer except in the address bar either.Your problem is that your using Internet Explorer. That is always an issue. It acts weird all the time. I do know that Internet Explorer has a backup of the cache that is hidden. That could be your issue. Try finding that folder and delete everything in that folder. Maybe it is loading the backup cache.

Other wise use a different browser like k-meleon.

Solve : How long for Vista Updates??

Answer»

How long for Vista Updates?
I have DSL and it is 760 kilo bits per second.
I got my new copy of Vista from egghead.
INSTALLED it Sunday, but did not get all the updates.
Most of today, Monday, has been spent on the updates.
I was thinking I should just leave the MACHINE on and the wife and I could take two days and go somewhere. And maybe Vista updates would be almost done when we get home.
But I hive not done this before. Would it be done in two days?
So I am asking, should we just go off on a five day CRUISE?

Any suggestions. On a fresh install at those DLoad speeds i wouldn't be suprised at 3 - 4 hours...not counting the re-boots...
I agree it should not take more than a few hours, but barring the POTENTIAL for power outages there is no HARM in leaving your system on for as long as you like.Today is Tuesday. So far no new updates.
So now I will start installing programs.
Thanks, I will do the cruise later. What cruise ? ?

Some Info For you:
A GRAPHICAL user interface (GUI) is a type of user interface item that allows people to interact with programs in more ways than typing such as COMPUTERS; hand-held devices such as MP3 Players, Portable Media Players or Gaming devices; household appliances and office equipment with IMAGES rather than text commands. A GUI offers graphical icons, and visual indicators, as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation to fully represent the information and actions available to a user. The actions are usually performed through direct manipulation of the graphical elements.

The term GUI is HISTORICALLY restricted to the scope of two-dimensional display screens with display resolutions capable of describing generic information, in the tradition of the computer science research at Palo Alto Research Center (PARC). The term GUI earlier might have been applicable to other high-resolution types of interfaces that are non-generic, such as videogames, or not restricted to flat screens, like volumetric displays.[

Solve : VISTA security issue?

Answer»

Hi guys, Im using Windows Vista Business in our office and Im connected to a shared printer through network but there is a problem, I cant print everytime I restart my PC. I tried to [Test Print] and the error message was

so the only way to connect to the printer is to reconnect my pc to the host printer by installing the necessary driver, that is the only time i can able to print again.

At first, I thought that the problem was with the printer driver but I found out that one of my officemate can print even if she restarted her PC and she can print with no error or problem. we have the same PC and OS.
I think there is a difference between the two PC security settings. When I first encountered this situation and tried to connect to the host printer there's a dialog box LIKE this

note: We can connect to the PC even if we enter only the username [no PASSWORD then enter] and when inputing username it can connect to the printer without the need of installing the printer driver. On the other hand, no dialog box appears and easily enables the connection to the host printer even when restarting the PC. But that makes it more tedious i will always need to open the host computer and the login screen to print a document. Most likely is has to do with vista sharing permission but i dont know where?

How can we solve this kind of ISSUE?!

We are using LENOVO ThinkCentre M58 with windows vista business OS.
thank you in advance.Your post is hard to understand.

Do you have THREE computers in a local network?
Are all the PCs running the same version of Windows?
Does the printer hool directly to the network?
Is this a wireless network?
Are you using a router, HUB or switch?
How many users are there?
Do all users have normal permissions on all computers?

The error message you show is when a user is not know to the host machine.
In some cases this shows when there is another kind of problem.
But it is most of the time a security question. The network does not know who you are.
Do you have three computers in a local network? nope, we have multiple pc in local network.

Are all the PCs running the same version of Windows? - yup, we are using windows vista

Does the printer hool directly to the network? -yup
Is this a wireless network? - nope.

Are you using a router, hub or switch? - we using hub or switch in every division

How many users are there? - i think more than 12 users in our division

Do all users have normal permissions on all computers? - yup

i think this is all about the settings of vista that we have to modify.
this is not printer issue anymore. this is all bout vista security

Solve : Vista will not start?

Answer»

Computer Maxdata Favorit with Vista.

I cant get windows to start. From the windows error recovery screen I have tried:

- Start Up Repair, get message 'cannot repair, then it RUNS Windows repair and I get message 'windows cannot repair'

System Recovery Options
- Restore to last know configuration does not work, screen just goes blank

CHKDSK runs, but then screen goes blank

Is there anything else I can try? Some background please. What led up to this? What happened between the last time the system started normally and the first time it didn't (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc?)As far as I know, nothing new added, full anti virus has always been up and running.

Did a system restore about a year ago which worked fine.

This problem just seemed to occur suddenly, and I am at a loss to explain why we can't do a restore as before

There are pictures on the hard disk that I must not loose!

I have the CD that come with the computer - I wonder if it can be repaired from the cd?

or

Is it possible to remove the hard drive and then read it from another computer so I can get the stuff I need? (I have done this before from a laptop, but is it as easy I wonder?)

Slave Drive Tutorial...

This would be a better option until you get your data off that drive as many Factory Restore discs will WIPE all the data on the drive during the restore process...I am having a similar problem. I left my computer on the went for a walk. All that was up was my email and a game factory installed on the computer. When I came home, 20 minutes later, this error message was up on my computer. Windows has been SHUT down to prevent damage to your computer. It says to disconnect any newly installed software. None was connected. It than says: Stop: 0X0000C1F5 (0X00000000, 0X00000000, 0X00000000, 0X00000000) It will not start in safe mode either. Any guesses as to whats going on. This is a 2007 Hewitt Packard computer with Windows Vista. I am asking this question on my husband's laptop. Brufunka,

It would be helpful if you started your own thread. There are many reasons why things don't work and what MAY work for KerryE may not work for you.

Solve : Error msg: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE?

Answer»

Problem: Blue SCREEN error msg: DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE

I was wondering if anyone else has seen this error message or had any insight on it. The Microsoft info is a little ambiguous at best. I am seeing it about once per day.

Background: I am running a clean install of WINDOWS 7 on a new, out-of-the-box WD Caviar hard drive. The MOTHERBOARD is a Gigabyte G31M-ES2L with the Intel E7400 Processor, both also new. At this point, still running with onboard graphics and sound. 4GB Kingston RAM installed. I have started uninstalling some recently installed programs to see if that helps.

Just looking to see if anyone else has had any EXPERIENCE with this one.

Jason

You may find some answers here .

Thank you. I hadn't seen that post when I was searching Microsoft before. Well, I wouldn't have found it I guess as that is not a MS site, sorry.Download BlueScreenView
No installation required.
Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply. Here it is, although I may have the same problem as mentioned in the previous link as I also have an M-Audio USB product. The driver in my error messages is different from that situation though. I have uninstalled the M-Audio software just in case.

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]All errors come from ntkrnlpa.exe

I'd test RAM...

A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 PASSES. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Ok, I'll check it out. Right now I have two 2GB Kingston sticks in. I haven't had a shutdown in a couple of days now, so I may wait to pull one out to see if that helps.

I have used memtest in the past. Just curious, why would I not want to try that first? Not trying to ask too many questions, I just don't know.Quote

All errors come from ntkrnlpa.exe
The above error often (not always) indicates RAM problem.

Solve : Setup.exe not working?

Hi everyone. I have purchased a new Nortons 2010 disc for my laptop but when I go to install it on my Toshiba I get an error message which reads "Setup, exec has stopped WORKING" and it WONT install. It is a three PC VERSION Nortons and installed fine on my HP laptop running Windows XP. Can anyone help please?Try installing in safe mode and see what happens.Which OS? Try running it as an administrator and see what happens. Safe mode would be a better GUESS though. Let us know how it goes Just an opinion but i would walk away from Norton altogether and install Avast Free or AVG Free...

Solve : COMPLEAT SYSTEM RESTORE?

Answer»

can some ONE tell me how to PREFORM a compleat system restore so that my computer is basically back to the out of the box condition. i have all my files backed up externally i do not have a restore disk but i know there are ways around this. i have vista and i have a Toshiba satellite E105 s1042 i doubt the model helps that much but just in CASE i provided it.

plez help If your model has recovery partition...
Hold down the 0 (zero) key and turn the laptop on. Keep holding down the zero key until the TOSHIBA logo appears, where you should START tapping the zero key repeatedly. Stop if the unit beeps or when the TOSHIBA logo disappears. The screen should flash ** HDD RECOVERY MODE ** for a split second, then load the Toshiba recovery program RIGHT from the hard drive.

Solve : Restarts before I can even log in?

Answer»

After I turn it on I'm given the windows error recovery screen. With the "Launch Startup Repair" and "Start Normally" OPTIONS.
While in Startup Repair I receive a notification that it can't be repaired automatically. So I enter system recovery options.
I've tried system restore but no checkpoints have been recorded. I have no backup to restore my computer and I've run the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool with no memory hardware errors found. There is an option to run command prompt but I'm not sure what I can enter to fix this.
When I "Start Normally" it's fine for a while but blue screens before the log in screen. I can see there's an error CODE on the blue screen but it's only there for a fraction of a second and I can't read it. I've tried recording it and pausing but it's too blurry.

I've ALSO started it in safe mode with the same results. One of those options at the boot screen should be "auto restart on errors"....disable it.
You will now be able to see your BSOD's.

Post the entire message including the gibberish.I found the option you mentioned and disabled it. This is the error message:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000034 0x0010040c).
The system has been SHUT down.

Doesn't sound too good...http://support.microsoft.com/kb/317189The link couldn't help in my case, unfortunately.
The first thing it asks is to make a back-up of the registry and I wasn't able to do that because apparently 'rstui.exe' doesn't exist. Also, I wasn't given the Windows Vista INSTALLATION CD with my laptop, it was already installed and I was given XP just in case I wanted to downgrade. So I can't make the parallel version of Windows as it asks.

I've heard an option is to format the hard drive, but I'd rather not. Is there another solution? It's really not a common error and I don't know of an alternative to what MS suggest. But perhaps someone else can think of something - stay tuned.

Solve : Blank Screen on Laptop w/ Vista?

Answer»

I have an HP Pavillion dv6000 laptop that is almost 2 yrs old. It came with Windows Vista. The computer was working fine LAST night but when I went to use it this morning the SCREEN had two error messages. One was about Internet Explorer not being able to work and the other was about Windows not being able to work. It was then looking to solve the problem but just kept going until it closed. At this point, my wallpaper was up and the Widgets on the right side of my screen (date, calendar, etc.) but the bar at the bottom of my screen w/ the Start button and any shortcuts on my desktop were gone. So I restarted my computer but it came up as the same thing. Then I turned my computer completely off and came back an hour later and turned it back on. It said Windows hadn't been shut down properly and what did I want to do. I clicked to restart normally. I entered my unlock password but now I just get to a black screen. I do have a mouse on the screen and I can move it around, there just isn't anything to click or anything. My computer automatically updates Vista so THATS the only thing I can think that happened in the night. Is there anything I can do to fix this? I don't know how to do much to fix things so I'd need a step-by-step account. Thanks and sorry this is so long.First, what was the exact error message? Second, if I were you I'd download a boot time virus scanner and run it.I can't remember the exact messages b/c they closed on their own but I'm pretty sure it was Windows Internet Explorer is currently not working and to wait while it is gathering information. And there was the progressing green lighted bar beneath it. It was the same message for Windows Vista too. As for downloading a virus scanner, is that something I can get in CD form? I tried PUTTING a DVD into the laptop to see if it'd play but the screen stayed black with the mouse. I can't get on the internet and the screen doesn't have anything pop up that I could click so I'm not sure if it'd even download the CD. You'd have to download and burn it on another system, but if you can't boot to it on yours that would be a problem. So I restarted and got on "safe mode" and all of the desktop icons show up there but it is really slow. I should be able to go on the internet in this mode, right? If so, do you suggest I just download a Windows-made virus scanner or is there another one that is better? You don't have any AV program currently installed?

Solve : Windows 7 product key?

My copy of WIN 7 had 2 DVD's one for 32 BIT software and for 64 bit software. Does the product key work for both DVD's if you want to run the 32 bit on one machine and the 64 bit on another? Or do you just have the CHOICE of running one or the other using the one key? The Key works for both Editions...
However according to the EULA you can only have 1 installed /running at the same time...

Solve : Windows vista - performance monitor?

Answer»

Hello guys

OK i got readyboost up and working, i am now trying to understand a little of how you know its actually doing something or is actually boosting your performance.

I now have to understand a little of how to use the performance and reliability monitor or the performace monitor.
I have been LOOKING at the help pages and it helps to some extent, but as a start when you are looking at the performance monitor on the ( change graph type) tab and you set it to LINE view, what do the horizontal numbers MEAN along the side.

I have added the counters, "bytes cached" "cache reads/sec" "hit read bytes/sec"
"total read bytes/sec" "total write bytes/sec"

Though i dont really know what is the best view to have this in.
Line view

I tried ReadyBoost but did not find much gain from using it. However, this reference indicates the gain realized may vary depending on the APPLICATION you're running. See ReadyBoost Performance

Solve : Black Screen Flashing Cursor?

Answer»

Hi please help I have been at this ALL day. My Laptop HP 11 months old (no idea what sort it has Vista)...wish it didn't after reading everyone hates it, worked great all last week for work. Suddenly though last night it shut down and when I tried to reboot it was fine, but left me with the flashing cursor and a black screen. I have tried-
Start up in safe mode.....loads files fine then nothing.
Start up in safe mode with some other instruction...nothing after loading files
Sticky key jobby....nothing but a few odd sounds
I am absolutely stumped...being a half wit doesn't help.

Please, if there is anyone out there who can help I would very much appreciate it. I have loads of work to send tonight/tomorrow and am now in panic mode!!

First, try performing a Microsoft System Restore, boot up the unit, hit F11 on POST and see if it does load the HP Recovery Manager (Beware it can take up to 3 minutes before it actually displays something!). If it does, click the ADVANCED Options in the BOTTOM left screen, and then click "Microsoft System Restore", and then hit next, after it tells you it needs to shut down the HP Recovery Manager.

In the next screen, after loading for 30 seconds, click next, and choose a System Restore Point. Click on next two or three more times (all options are default and you do not need to change those) and then wait untill it is done and asks you to reboot.

If all the above fails, reboot, GO into your BIOS using F10 (click it a few times on your POST screen), then, click "Diagnostics" at the top, and perform the Hard Disk Short Self Test (You might need to click on Smart Support first, but normally not with a notebook from HP). Let the system scan the hard drive, and if it is giving any errors, you might be looking at a defective hard drive and you need to call HP so they can send you a new one, and also some restore discs if you not already have them. Let me know how this turns out.Hi I don't know who you are but I have done exactly as you said and it is doing something as I WRITE, I had chosen a day at the beginning of January to restore, but it didnt like it and said there was an error, I am now attempting yesterdays date and will see what happens. i thought that by choosing an earlier date it would help, just in case I had done somthing stupid.
I will keep you informed...
Ann
xMy name is Ron, and I am an employee for HP at the moment, so I know almost everything there is with HP notebooks and desktops, that is why I could also give you detailed information about your HP.

The problem is, if this does not work, you need to find an original Vista disc (And not the recovery discs from HP, if you DID burn them) to restore your MBR (fixboot, fixmbr, those kind of things). But let's first wait and see what yesterday's date does, if it doesn't work, let me know what kind of error you're getting and also perform the HDD test in the BIOS, just in case.Hi Ron, I have just sent you a massive THANK YOU but I cant find it on the screen. You are a GENIUS and I very much appreciate your help.
Thanks so much. I just need to SAY that I do lots of things to help people out and my mum says it comes back in other ways....and it just has so thanks.
AnnDid the Microsoft System Restore work for you? If so, I'm glad, because that was the fastest and easiest fix. Glad I could help btw

Solve : Do I need all these processes??

Answer»

So basically I can't stand waiting for a computer to do something, and I'm OCD as well, so all these processes my computer is running are bothering me.

I realize a LOT of the processes are "NEEDED" based on who the user is, but there might be a few that just aren't useful, or maybe someone could explain what a few of the processes do so I can decide if they're needed.

So which processes can I/should I disable? I don't expect one person to go through and tell me what EVERYTHING means, but maybe just pick a few and we can solve this issue by committee :-D

I have a Toshiba Satellite that I got in the Summer of '08. Its 64-bit & 4 GB RAM. Not really sure what else is relevantDepending on you RAM SIZE there is nothing there that NEEDS to be removed You have some unneeded processes running, but they're triggered by unnecessary startups.
I can help you sort them out.

0x0000001E (0xFFFFFFFFC0000005, 0xFFFFF88007AE7ED0, 0x0000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

I checked my RAM with memtest, didn't come up with any errors.

I run on a Q6600 quad-core intel, a 8800GTX graphics card, an ASUS P5N32E-SLI motherboard and Windows 7 x64.

Don't. Ever.

Now, did the BSOD happen only twice (two log items)?
Under what circumstances does BSOD happen?I just upgraded to Windows 7, so I'm pretty SURE it erased all the previous ones I had, but SINCE upgrading, only twice, yes.

And so far it happened while gaming mostly, but then again I'm gaming most of the time. It's hard to diagnose anything from two BSODs, but....
nvm62x64.sys is part of NVIDIA nForce hardware firewall, which is known for causing problems.
Try to uninstall it (you don't need it anyway)...

I recommend, you remove NVIDIA ActiveArmor hardware firewall built into nVidia nForce motherboard chipsets.
It's known for causing a LOT of problems.

Open Notepad.
Copy, and paste text below:

Quote
c:
cd %windir%\system32\wbem\
net stop winmgmt /y
ping -n 10 127.0.0.1
rmdir /s /q repository
rmdir /s /q Logs
mkdir Logs
net start winmgm
ping -n 10 127.0.0.1
exit

Save it as nvidia.bat

Run it, by doubleclicking on nvidia.bat

Restart computer. Will try that when I get back home, and post update to let you know if it fixed the problem.

Solve : weird error?

Answer»

hey guys im very new to this forum please bear with me.

im using a fujitsu siemens li1818 notebook on windows vista home premium sp1. i have a 10mb INTERNET connection.
there seems to be something wrong with my network card, ethernet port or my router.

if i use my wireless network card and download over around 500kb/s my network crashes. i tried this on another wireless laptop it worked fine and reached speeds of 1.2mb/s.

then i thought why not just use a ethernet wire for the internet. when i plugged it in, it was working fine and when i was downloading it reached full speed and everything was just fine until i got the BLUESCREEN of death saying:

does anyone know how to FIX these errors?

any sort of help would be appreciated!

thanks so much

Solve : Run batch file from right click menu?

Answer»

I'm using ProEngineer CAD which generates many report and log files which need to be deleted in order to tidy up the working DIRECTORY. I have this batch file which which worked in the right click menu on my previous XP machine but cannot get it to work in windows 7. If I copy the file into the folder and double click it the it does the job suggesting that there is something wrong with the way I edited the REGISTRY which was a straight copy from the old machine.

Question - how do I get this to run through the right context menu?

Solve : Can't view web pages?

Answer»

hi,

I SEEM to have a problem viewing web pages. Sometimes i can view them but then if i try to go to another one it just stays on the page im on (no loading or anything) Sometimes i cant even start viewing pages, it jsut opens up the blank-untitled page in my browser (DOESNT show the "cannot connect to the internet" message).

What i've done:

Tried multiple networks had the problem on both so its on my end.

I CAN connect to the internet. I pinged certain websites with cmd prompt with no lost packets and a low latency ~20ms.

The DNS servers listed in ipconfig are the same as those for a friends computer and hes not having any problems, so i dont think its a dns server problem.

i can PLAY online games perfectly fine, it's just browsing sites thats the problem.

I've deleted temporary internet files and cookies as well as disabling/enabling my network adapter
(drivers are up to date)

any help would be greatly appreciatedupdate: So i found, what i think is a transponder virus (i was LOOKING for something else when i saw the file aion2010.dll, a KNOWN keylogger)

deleting the file wouldnt work (in use by another program) so i booted into safe mode w/ cmd prompt and deleted the file. Now when i reboot i get an error message aion2010.dll was not found, so i havent taken the harmful program off my comp but the harmfull keylogger is off, so its a temporary fix.

At the moment i can view pages fine and am having no problems so hopefully this fixes the problem.

For anyone interested aion2010.dll is a common keylogging program associated with the game aion. From what i understand its a modified version of a common world of warcraft keylogger. Go to the malware forum on this site and follow the instructions at the top of that forum.

Solve : application not found message/24562?

Answer»

Hope this is the right place to ask this. I have VISTA, IE7 (I think), laptop dell. Yesterday I downloaded Google CHROME (no reason why) and it seemed way to much at the moment so I went to control panel and deleted the program.

Problem: I use Windows Mail...every time I go to open a LINK I get a red x and a message that says "application not found/message 24562

What did I do wrong in deleting Google Chrome...why would I get that message? Thank you for your kindness, SuzanneOpen Control Panel and double-click Internet Options.
Click the Programs tab.
Click to select the Internet Explorer should check to SEE whether it is the default browser check box.
Click OK.
Start Internet Explorer and when you are prompted to make it the default browser, click Yes.On answer to your question at the end...google chrome probably set itself as the default browser.
Allan's fix above will TAKE care of that.

Solve : Windows Genuine Advantage Fails Again.?

Answer»

Windows Genuine Advantage Fails Again.
Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade from Vista.

This is like deja vu all over again.

We had that in Windows XP. Sometimes it would fail or legal installs.

Yeah, I know what you want to say. Where did you get you copy of Windows 7?
Answer: From Microsoft.

I bought Windows Vista from Newegg.

Installed it on my machine and applied for the update to Windows 7. In less that two weeks it was here. Installed it. Used it.
That was a while back. Now today It tells me that it is not legal.

Oh, BTW. I made a backup install on a hard DRIVE. I plugged in the backup drive today and got online and then after an update it tells me I am not legal. I was legal a few weeks ago. KIs this how MS starts the new year? It is the same machine, only difference is I am testing my backup drive, which is also a 40GB SATA.
Well, I am going going through the hoops with this again. I know it was a legitimate DVD, it came from Microsoft.
Nut it does not have the exact logo that WGA says I sould have.
No My questions.
1. Am I the only person that would ever test a backup drive?
2. Or has thisnever happended to ANYBODY else?
Am I going crazy. Don't answer that, just the two questions above. Thank you.Call MS using the Free #800 number...
They will issue you a new activation #Patio has the right solution, but I understand your frustration. Microsoft.com has a list of things you can do without triggering WGA. I don't have it handy, but changing one piece of hardware is not supposed to trigger it. They probably are protecting themselves against cloned disk images being distributed to different computers, and whoever wrote the routine didn't think about considering whether the original drive was still present, and whether Windows was actually installed on the drive, instead of just detecting the presence of another drive serial number. I know. M$ is getting tight. Just a little too tight. In trying to stop the pirates, they are causing inconvenience and annoyance to the legit customers. But who ya gonna call? Ghostbusters? This kind of thing gives boost to Mac and Linux promoters, but face it, Windows is too established to make a change for most people.jkolak, You are right on!
Got it fixed.
It was a combo of thugs, including a hardware change.
Just had to do things in the right order.
Kind of strange.
They was not attempt hee to cheat MS. I just did not pay enough attention and forgot that I made some major changes, I backtracked and found the way to fix it.
But I wail not share this with you for two reasons.
1. It really will embarrass me to explain how I forgot what I did and did not do.
2. It will most likely not apply to others. Our readers are not that dumb.

Well, I know of at least one other: JGSoft.

had the same experience with Editpad Pro; refused to recognize as "activated/registered" when I replaced my secondary HD it was installed on.

I was able to use norton diskedit to literally change the serial number to be the same as the old one, before the 30-day "evaluation" was up. of course if I had internet at the time I could have simply downloaded a fresh copy off the site and installed it with no issues; and a text editor isn't nearly as important as an OS.Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 24, 2010, 03:14:03 PM

Solve : document printing out with large blank areas?

Answer»

Help!
Okay, yesterday morning I decided to un-install all this game software that my son likes to download onto my computer. I dont know if I accidentally un-installed something important. vista.
I opened an adobe document which I can view normally, but when I print it out, it prints only the header and the checked boxes.
So I un-installed and re-installed my printer software AND adobe, with no sucess. Its doing it intermittently on several other adobe documents which I know printed out normally in the past.
Anyone have a clue? I tried the help at DELL, no luck. I cant seem to google and find anyone with a similar problem. I can e-mail the document and then scan and e-mail what prints out, if that would help. All other documents, such as a webpage, a word document, printing fine? Thanks for asking.
Web pages print out normally.
Microsoft word documents print out normally.
Adobe documents that dont have the little square boxes for checkmarks print normally.
Adobe documents that have little square boxes so you can check (like on a form to fill out and check appropriate boxes) only print the little boxes and randomly other areas of the document.
Both adobe documents that have printed out normally in the past, AND new adobe documents that I just downloaded are doing this.

Any clue?

If I had printed out a document normally in the past and now it prints out wierd like this......... that would lead you to conclude that its not a corrupted file right? It must be something in my computer missing or corrupted, right? I dont know if a file can be corrupted after its ALREADY been downloaded normally or not.Normally, no, when you download a file which isn't corrupted, it will not become corrupted by itself, so I highly doubt it's because of a corrupted file. Mind sending me that file via PM so I can test if it works with my printer? If it doesn't work, the file is probably corrupted, if it does work, then obviously it's something else and we need to find out what that is, but first I want to test out that file myself.sure! absolutely. I really appreciate it. Let me figure out how to send that to you real quick
I sent it to your hotmail address, did you get it?I've got it, thanks.

I just ACTUALLY figured out my own printer isn't working, so I will have to check this tomorrow when I fixed it. I will get back to you tomorrow.no problem! I am going to go to the library tomorrow and print it out to see if it works also, I suspect that it will work at the library though. Have you tried selecting "print as IMAGE" on the print options screen?
There is also an option to Print "document" or "document and MARKUPS".Brilliant!
That worked! The box, for print as image was not checked so I checked it and it works now. Now the box remains checked. Is it suppose to be checked? Is there something wrong with my computer because I never checked that box before. Print as image. How about printing regular word documents? Can I print as image? Is there something malicious about leaving it on print as image?
Thank you!Leaving the print as image box checked won't hurt anything but it shouldn't have to be checked. It will take a little longer to print and may use a little more ink. This was just a test to see if it worked. The first thing to try is open up the document that won't print and click on "save as" and rename the document and see if the new document will print without the print as image checked. If so it was just a corrupted file. If that doesn't work the problem is most likely due to your printer drivers. Did you have your printer unplugged from the computer when you uninstalled and reinstalled your printer software and drivers?Im pretty sure I had the printer unconnected when I re-installed but it was probably connected when I initially un-installed.
I did try saving it to the desktop and under documents, neither one of them printed normally.
should I try to uninstal and re-instal it again. What about the drivers that came with my computer, I have a seperate disc for the drivers. Will it harm anything or loose any files if I re-install the Dell drivers? You don't want to re-install your drivers from the Dell CD unless it's a Dell printer CD your talking about. If you still have the CD that came with the printer I would unplug the printer from the computer, uninstall the printer, then insert the cd to install the printer software and drivers, then plug the printer back in.Thanks I am going to do that. I will let you know if it works!

Solve : I/O card parity interrupt at F000:F188?

Answer»

I have a Dell XPS420 and thought that my hard drive was GIVING out. The system would boot up if I tilted the computer at a 45 degree angle and tilt it a little to the right. Sounds STRANGE but I found this out when I picked the front part up the get a speaker wire free.

I got a new hard drive WD green SATA 500 WD5000AADS. I took out the old hard drive and installed the new one.

Now the fun begins - I replaced a hard drive on my old Deminision computer prior to giving it to my daughter - no problems at all. I was silly to think that type of luck would hit twice.

I put the new hard drive in the XPS and turned on the computer - I had to do the same tilting routine to get it to even turn on. After it turned on I got the message I/O card parity interupt at F000/F1888. The I/O card is the same one that came with the system - no add ons.

I think I may have purchased a new hard drive that I didn't need.

Any suggestions of how I can get the computer to run without the tilting and slanting?

In the mean time - since I don't think it is the hard drive, I guess I will put the old hard drive in and restart the computer with the slant/tilt method. Check the connections between the power supply and the motherboard.I did all the checks and everything is plugged in tight and running.

I replaced the hard drive and trying to get everything back to normal - hopefully, just forgot to back up my favorites for web BROWSING so now I guess I have to access the human computer to try to remember all my favorites sites.

The new hard drive seems to be doing fine. I ran it through a number of boots along with shutting down and turning on. I didn't get any failure notes, etc so I guess it was the hard drive.

Thank you for your HELP. Quote from: dlnc on January 25, 2010, 09:18:24 PM

I did all the checks and everything is plugged in tight and running.

That's probably what did it. Pushing things to see if they are in tight can often be all it takes to CLEAN a contact. Works a little better if you pull items all the way out and push them back on.

I show no default scheduled tasks in a brand new install of Win7 64bit.

Task Scheduler (LOCAL)-> Task Scheduler Library->Microsoft->Windows->Defrag

It's there all right...

I disabled it just now. Defragmentation is a huge waste of computer resources for very little gain. If we didn't need defragmentation when access times were >85ms I don't see why we need it for <10ms access times.

Allan is pretty much correct wth regards to "optimizing" versus simply defragmenting. However one can defragment without "optimizing" so I don't think the terms are as interchangable as they once were.

My opinion: Defragmentation is a waste of time, and Optimization even more so. How much time do you save by putting certain files in the "faster accessed" portion of the disc. hardly any. average access time for most drives is less then 10ms, all your doing is moving the data to the outside of the platter (it spins by faster) so if you move a file from the middle of the disk to the outter edge:

for a 3.5 inch hard disk, we are moving the data from 1.75" to all the way to the outside, or 3.5". I work better with metric though so those measurements are 8.89cm and 4.445 cm respectively: what we are doing is increasing the amount of data the DRIVE can access; but by how much?

circumference is measured using the formula PI*D (diameter) so:

PI*8.80cm*2 = 55.8575173808265cm

PI*4.445cm*2= 27.9287586904133cm

now, assuming we have a speed of 7200rpm, this means that we are increasing the speed the data goes by from
covering 3351.45 cm every second to 6702.90208569918cm, which approximately doubles the amount of data passing under the read head. However, this doesn't take into account the fact that the drive motor has to move the heads to be at the edge of the disk; depending on where they are they might take longer then moving ot the middle of the disk, and can actually decrease the access time (while increasing the BURST rate, which is pretty pointless when your dealing with files that take up as much space on the disk as a PINHEAD). This type of "optimization" can only really show good results when dealing with streaming media, like high-resolution video. For more clandestine operation it's pretty pointless.

And then we have people who are newer to computers that don't quite understand what defragmenting does, and think it will resolve issues they are having with the disk.
Quote from: BC_Programmer on January 26, 2010, 07:42:35 AM

Agreed, the terms were once interchangeable but now there is a bit of a difference between the two. My error.

Solve : I need some advice on managing two hard drives?

Answer»

Mine is a desktop running Vista Ultimate. I have a 500gb and a 40gb hard drive. They are both sata drives and plugged into two sata sockets on an Intel MB.
I presently have two partitions on each and there are boot sectors on each one.
I can presently boot from either of the two as the bios seems to give me a choice on start up.
I want to use one drive for everday operation and the other for storage.
The bios on this machine seems to recognize each PARTITION with an active boot sector.
I don't clearly understand the best arrangement for this and am hoping someone can CLARIFY it for me.
Any thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Ivan CopasSounds like you have it set up fine.

You can MANUALLY save your data on the second drive, or you can use Explorer to move My Documents to the storage drive.

Or you can move My Documents to the second partition on the first drive and use the second copy to KEEP a backup copy of My Documents. You stated how it's setup quite clearly.
But i'm not quite sure what your goal is and/or what you want to change here...Thanks so much for your response.
I'm not too clear as to what I want to do.
I'm without experience as to how this set up should behave and sometimes it seems cumbersome.
I have two partitions on each drive and sometimes I lose track of which partition I am looking at.
I can't always send a file to the partition I would like. I know this is all my fault, but:
I have found if one is not clear on what they want the computer to do; it sort of has a mind of it's own and sometimes gives unexpected results.
I have in the past, lost some files due to hardware/software failure. (Or mine)
I think I want to use the second disk as a temporary back up.
I am using a disk partition program that I downloaded from the net. It sometimes leaves me flying blind.
Thanks again for your time.
Ivan Copas I have 2 PC's setup this way so i'll try and explain what i've done to keep track.

When you use the BIOS to select which OS to boot to and each is installed seperately on seperate drives here's what happens:
Whatever OS you boot to the 1st partition of that drive becomes C; no matter what...
CONSEQUENTLY the 1st partition of the drive you did Not boot to becomes D:

So lets say XP is on drive 1 and Vista is on drive 2...the following will happen
Boot to XP the XP drive is C: the 1st partition on the Vista drive is D:
Boot to Vista the Vista drive is C: the 1st partition on the XP drive is now D:
====================================

Now that that's clear as mud...
To help keep additional partitions sorted i use a main volume label for each drive and name the other partitions accordingly.

For example each drive in the above scenario has an OS installed and 3 partitions on each drive.
So the XP drive being drive 1 is Alpha
partition2 on that drive is Apha2...and so on.

The 2nd Drive volume label is Beta...
partition2 is Beta2 and so on.

This way no matter how the drive letters move around i still am aware of what and where each partition is.That's really smart, Patio. I am just starting to go that direction with my first multi-drive, multi-boot system.

So far I've not been confused just because I am generally aware of how big my partitions are and what the contents are, but I really like your idea. Not really smart...just logical really.
Came out of neccessity back when i only had 1 running benchtest machine with 3 HDD's and 6 OS's installed....

It was self-preservation at that point...I can see that! Wow! 3 HDD and 6 OS!

Solve : WIN 7 RAM?

Answer»

How much ram is use by windows 7 after being BOOTING. Without lanching any application.Look at the Performance Tab in Task Manager. Windows will manage the SYSTEM according to how much RAM you have AVAILABLE before it starts paging.Superfetch uses up RAM as well, but in Windows 7, Superfetch doesn't do its THING until about 5-6 MINUTES after startup.Ummmmmmm.....

He's gone.And none too soon.
