Solve : Reducing Volume of "Windows Sounds"?

Answer»

Whenever WINDOWS 7 makes a sound (like an error message or something like that) it seems entirely too loud relative to other programs that make sounds. Is there any way I can make Windows 7 play quieter sounds when it's giving me error messages?

I checked the Mixer and I didn't see anything there, and I also checked control panel -> sounds, and only FOUND a way to CHANGE the sounds Windows 7 made, but not exactly make them quieter. In the mixer Reduce the "Windows sounds" slider.

Or, you could raise all the other sliders and reduce your speaker volume, if that's possible.http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/6267/01272010200441.jpg

i dont see "windows sounds"?

is it SYSTEM sounds?weird. There is something wrong there... this is what I get:

Oh never mind. I just checked on my laptop; they changed the "windows sounds" item into "system sounds".

So, yeah, that one.

Solve : Windows Media Player /Rhaposdy keep closing?

Answer»

I had to REPLACE both my motherboard and processor a few days ago.

Since then both Windows Media player and Rhapsody open but then I get error message stating " not working and must close ".

All other software programs and the computer itself seem to be working fine.

I just find it strange that both Media players are not working.

I uninstalled and reinstalled both programs but it did not correct the problem

I have HP Desktop 1730n
OS Windows 7

Thanks to anyone who has any help out there

Did you remember to re-install the MBoard chipset drivers ? ?

They will be on the driver CD that shipped with the MBoard. The motherboard and the processor were REPLACED by my warranty service " City ASSURE"

I know for a fact that there was no CD with MBoard chipset drivers .

The just installed new Heat sink FAN, processor and motherboard.

All new hardware was HP parts

Is there anyway to obtain the chipset drivers? From the HP website...
You will need make and model # info...Thank You.

I was not aware that was required.

This nighmare story involved a defective Heat sink fan and a totally inexperienced tech who had no idea how to repair computers who ended up damaging my processor, processor socket and the motherboard. I certainly hope you didn't have to foot that bill...

Anytime the OS is re-installed for whatever reason all drivers need to be re-installed afterwards.
I'd burn the ones you get from the site to a CD for future reference...I contacted HP who ran a scan of my computer and determined the correct chipset drivers were installed on the Motherboard.

I am not sure how because as I said the tech did not have any cd nor did he download any from the internet once the computer was up and running.

I know he did have to enter information I believe in the BIOS before starting the computer.

I mentioned that this problem started with a defective Heat sink fan. Well you would not believe it but when I started the computer tonight it had error message that " System Fan has failed " At this point I hope the the entire system fails I have a two year full replacement warranty.

I should tell you that I was able to correct both issues with Windows Media player and Rhapsody. I found from searching the internet that by deleting the DRM files in the registry and restarting the computer both program both WORK without crashing.

Thanks for all your help, take care

Solve : Vista's fault??

Answer»

I got my PSU yesterday. I hooked everything up and booted. Vista went about good the first boot but i booted again it had some drivers failing. I beleive it was a NETWORK driver. I used my UPGRADE disc and upgraded to Windows 7 and have only restarted the machine twice and that was to install the updates. So far everything has worked fine. Anything i should do?I turned my computer off last night before heading to bed. I went to school and came back after a basket ball game. I came up to my room pressed the power button went through the normal for me. The a black screen pops up saying no operating system found.... I took a video of everything around it and the messege i receive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1SOSALU6M30FALSE ALARM

For some REASON my boot priority was set differently and when i tried to set the boot priority my hard drive wasn't showing up. I found the solution and my pc is now in proper working condition. I thank all who have HELPED me with my issues. My problem was a bad stick of ram. I used the tools in the boot menu of Kubuntu to test my hard drive and memory. I let the memory test run over night i woke up to 173,489 errors. I went threw the proccess of elimination and found the bad stick of memory. Thanks very much guys.Get your money back for that memory...and glad to hear you are sorted ! !Can i get my money back even if i bought it about 6 months ago?Probably can't get your money back but it most likely has a lifetime warranty. You will probably have to go through the manufacture for a replacement and not where you bought it.

Solve : Can't setup Outlook (iPhone Issues)?

Answer»

I recently did a clean install of Windows 7 and began reinstalling my programs. I have an Office 2000 CD and upgraded via the Microsoft patch/download. Everything INSTALLED FINE, but when opening Outlook for the first time, regardless of the setup option I choose (e-mail, no e-mail, etc), it throws a "Outlook has stopped working" error and Windows fails to find a solution, only allowing you to close the APPLICATION. Through my research, this seems to be a common problem (possibly due to add ons?) but I can't seem to find a solution for my particular issue:

I do not USE Outlook for mail, but I do use it to back up the contacts on my iPhone. I wanted to set up Outlook, import the contacts from my phone (which I'm not even sure how to go about, but I *think* a 2-way sync will move the contacts from the phone to Outlook without deleting them), and be done with it.

I have not updated with any of the Windows updates yet, so I don't think that is the problem --it has to be something particular to the 2000 software or Windows 7 itself. I'm not a complete idiot but I'm certainly no techie, I'd prefer not to mess with the REGISTRY or download random software, but I'm desperate for a solution so that I can have a backup.

Anyone have any ideas?

Running a 32-bit Home Pro version of Windows 7. Let me know if you need any additional information.

Thank you,
Laura

Solve : Error in Windows file system?

Answer»

I received an HP G60-235dx for my birthday in JUNE 2009. It was running smoothly until around the beginning of November 2009. From then on out, my computer has been LAGGING a ridiculous amount. Even after ending unnecessary tasks, running one program can cut it really close. I've been looking for solutions for the past few months but nothing seems to do the trick. I've done nearly everything there is to do from an unexperienced Windows user's perspective:

- Installed various anti-spyware/malware programs
- Defragmented the disks
- Cleaned up the disks
- Cleaned the registry

I looked at my problem REPORTS and solutions and the following errors have been reported since November:

- Diagnostic Policy Service (3)
- Driver software installation (2)
- Host Process for Windows Services (7)
- hpqddsvc (137)
- Windows Search Indexer (14)
- Microsoft WPD FileSystem Volume Driver (2)
- Windows (9)
- Windows Defender Command Line Utility (
- Reliability analysis metrics calculation executable (4)
- Windows SQM Consolidator (1)

After looking at the solution to each of these problems, the following solution was common to nearly all of them:

Quote

"Troubleshoot a problem with your computer's hard disk
Windows isn't able to open a file on your computer's hard disk. This might be a temporary condition that could go away after restarting your computer, or it could be a more serious problem with your hard disk or its driver.

To troubleshoot this problem, follow these steps:

Restart your computer

Run the hard disk error-checking tool

What you can do if the problem is being caused by the Windows file system"

I've restarted my computer and run error-checking multiple TIMES. After looking up various solutions, I ran ComboFix this morning on my computer to no avail. I kept the LOG on my computer if that is any help. The specs for my computer are as follows, transcribed accordingly from Windows Welcome Center:

HP G60-235DX
Windows Vista 32-bit Home Premium with SP2
Pentium Dual-Core Processor @ 2.00 GHz
3.0 GB RAM

I have a genuine copy of Windows and have been receiving updates just fine for my computer. Any ideas as to what exactly is going on with my laptop? You say you've installed various malware programs. I assume that means you've run scans as well. If not, run a full scan with BOTH your AV and MalwareBytes.

What AV are you using?

Have you done a clean boot? If not, do so now (msconfig - selective startup - disable everything) and let's see how the system runs.

Solve : Where and how do I create a PTR record on Windows Vista??

Answer»

If you no PLEASE reply thanks means alot! Humor me...
What the heck is a PTR record ? ?http://hosting.intermedia.net/support/kb/default.asp?id=1317C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Thanks, but what do I do next if you don't mind me asking ?edit the file. add a hosts entry for an IP address.

this is the closest you can come, since the PTR is actually on a remote server; that is, you cannot create a PTR record on your PC since none exist on your PC.

the hosts file can be used to "EMULATE" a reverse lookup;

each line is in the form

IPaddress hostname

I you might be able to do something like:

hostname ipaddress or two IP addresses, but I'm not sure. What BC_Programmer and everyone else said.

A PTR (or "Pointer") record is something that you would put on a DNS ("Domain Name Services") server for reverse DNS purposes (resolving an IP address to a host name).

One of the most common reasons for having a pointer record would be if you have your own mail server and other mail servers are blocking you because your IP address doesn't resolve to your domain name (which is now a common way to check for spam). I see, Well i don't no. I been doing my research on the problem I have which is A DNS problems which looks like this when I run CMD

Default Server: Unknown
Address: 192.168.1.1

And when I run ipconfig/all

it says my DNS servers is 192.168.1.1

So I don't no if I have to do A PTR record or A Pointer, But on most problems I saw from everyone else on the web had A different computer like Windows 2003, The funny part is I still don't no how to heck im GETTING on the Internet, and I get this message when i cut off " Windows failed to find well known host www. Microsoft.com, DNS server may be down, and oh how do you mean edit the file? You can do one of three things, depending on how your network is set up (i.e.: if it's your own home network or if it's a company or university network):

1) Log into your router. If ipconfig /all shows your Default Gateway as 192.168.1.1, then open up a browser window and type in http://192.168.1.1. Enter your user name and password for the router. Go into the section that shows DHCP addresses assigned to your network and find out if there is a section for DNS. If there is, then add real DNS server addresses there. If you don't know any DNS addresses, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

2) Same as #1, EXCEPT add the DNS addresses to the WAN section.

3) Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections (XP) or Network and Sharing Center (Vista/7)/Manage Network Connections (Vista)/Change Adapter Settings (7) -> right-click your "Local Area Connection" (or whatever it's named) -> left-click "Properties" -> click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" (XP) or "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP)" (Vista/7) -> click Properties button -> add DNS servers in manually.Ok Killerb255 I replying to the first advice you gave me I got onto it. On my router status its says im using this DNS on my router status 194.168.4.100 and 194.168.8.100 And yes there is A section for DNS but im not sure what to do its called "Dynamic DNS " its looks like this

Use a dynamic DNS service

Service Provider www.DynDNS.org
Host Name
User name
Password

Thats what it looks like I thought il ask you before i did anything silly.

Thanks for helping me so far Killerb255 I really aprecciate it and thanks for everyone support that they have given me Don't worry about the dyndns stuff. That's only used if you're hosting a website from your own network, don't have a static public IP address, and/or don't want to pay for a formal domain name.

Anyway, the two DNS addresses LOOK like they're pointing to internal servers. Who set up your router initially?

Change those two addresses to the DNS addresses supplied by your Internet Service Provider. Again, if you don't know what those are, you'll need to contact your provider.Yeah but that DNS im using is Virgin cable I managed to find that on here http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/dns.htm and Virgin is my Internet Service Provider. So really its just Virgin with its rubbish DNS servers maybe LolIf you are on Virgin then that is where you need to get your info from...no matter what it says on kitz...

Solve : PCIE Video Card Stopped Working After Windows Update?

Answer»

Alright so here is the story/problem. I was going to BED a couple nights ago and everything was working fine, I saw that windows was doing an update so I put the computer in hibernate and went to bed, woke up and turned the computer on...All of the sudden my computer is running off of my ONBOARD graphics instead of my video card. So I researched the problem and found that I had to disable it in bios, disable it in device manager and switch around my ram slots...did that..restarted the computer..nothing...so I decided to restart the computer again and then windows said it couldn't configure an update so it's reverting back...after that my video card magically started working again...BUT I FORGOT to turn automatic UPDATES off so the next time I restarted my computer the updates went forth and now it's running off of my onboard graphics card again. I have not been able to revert it. I have tried uninstalling the updates but that doesn't work either. I don't have windows install discs so I can't re install windows. Any ideas? Thanks Quote

So I researched the problem and found that I had to disable it in bios, disable it in device manager

If this didn't work, then you should undo the changes made in the bios..If not you're just making the problem more difficult to troubleshoot..

Why did you do this?

What's the make/model of the computer and what the make/model of the video card?

Solve : "Sleep" Issue?

Answer»

hi, i recently upgraded from XP to 7. In Xp, i'd put the COMPUTER to sleep and it would wake up normally. now, it will wake up, my monitor will come on, but instead of displaying the windows 7 desktop, the monitor simply says "no signal" and powers down, like its still in sleep mode. i know it has woken up, because my power light stops blinking, and i can hear my processor kick on. some help would be appreciated. thanks.Desktop? Disable all power saving features. Period.it is a desktop. i would like to be able to use stand-by, b/c i heard that constantly turning a computer on and off is hard on the power supply. if i cannot, thats okay.Simply turn it off, when you're not planning to use it for a longer time, like for the night.Disabling all the power-saving features is more of a workaround than a fix.

Having said that, it may still be the best course of action, assuming that this particular PC's motherboard/chipset may not have UPDATED drivers to take advantage of Windows 7's various power states properly...Surely, the machine may have some other issues, but disabling power features is a good start.
It's not a workaround, but a solution to Windows power features, which unfortunately were never mastered by Microsoft (I can see, Windows 7 is having very same problems).
It's not me bashing MS, but me stating a fact. Two schools of thought on turning the system off each day.

1) The biggest shock to a system is when it is first powered up. True, but if you do it only once or twice a day the system should still not be negatively affected. I've had systems 8 or more years that were powered off and on daily with no problems at all.

2) The hd will wear down more quickly if the system isn't shut down overnight if not in use. True, but the hd will eventually park or, if you set it to do so, go to sleep. The hd will wear down over time no matter what you do.

I know true computer experts who leave there systems on 24/7 and others who turn them off daily. It's strictly a personal choice.I concur with Allan.

To add, think about servers for EXAMPLE. They stay on 24/7 because they have to...even entry-level servers that are USING standard PC-grade components.hi, i am unsure if intel released an updated driver for my particular chipset. i went directly through dell's website and downloaded drivers specifically for my computer (dimension 5100c). beleive me, there are a lot of problems i have just fixed; this is just one more check on the list.

Solve : computer only plays some burnt cd's?

Answer»

Hey all,

First off, I am basically computer illiterate. Now onto my problem, not sure if this is where I was supposed to post it but, I have some burnt cd's that I made when I updated my computer from Windows XP to Windows 7. Of the cd's I made, 1 of them works on my computer, however all of the cd's work on my friends computers. Any ideas as to what would make this happen.

Thanks,
DanWhat type of CDs are they? Audio? DATA? Mixed-mode?

What program(s) did you use to burn them? Roxio? NERO? ImgBurn?

Were they burned to CD-Rs? CD-RWs?

Make and model of your computer's OPTICAL drive?the cd's are audio cd's on CD-R's, they were burnt off of a mac computer. I'm not sure how to figure out what my optical drive is any help on that one??Were the tunes downloaded from iTunes and burned to CD? If so, there could be DRM preventing the disc from being readable on anything but the Mac (I could be wrong on this one--someone familiar with Mac/iTunes please feel free to correct me).

Optical drive = drive that plays and burns CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, and other stuff. There were 6 cd's total burnt from the same Mac computer. Out of the 6 one of them plays on my computer, the other 5 show up as blank discs. All 6 cd's play on my friends computers. This is what confuses me, 1 of 6 from the same source play on my computer, 6 of 6 play on my friends. Sorry if this is all pretty STUPID, I'm lucky I know how to turn my computer on haha.I could be mistaken here but since MAC's use a different OS these CD's will probably never be recognised on a Windows PC without some SORT of conversion software...Are all your friends' computers Macs?Quote from: killerb255 on February 01, 2010, 10:48:25 AM

Are all your friends' computers Macs?

If so i'd suggest extending your sphere of influence.....
Sorry...couldn't resist.

Solve : Browsers work, then stop and "Load" forever?

Answer»

New guy here, with an annoying problem...

No matter whether I'm using Firefox, Opera, or IE, everything works fine for a while (sometimes a few minutes, sometimes quite a while), and whether I'm doing email, surfing the web, whatever, and UPON opening a new window, hitting refresh, attempting to open an email...with no warning the little circling "Loading" INDICATOR begins and never stops.

If I try and open a different browser, that one will no longer load either. It's like I've been booted off the router connection, although the connection still shows up as strong.

This machine is one of two notebooks connected wirelessly, and there is a third computer in the house (desktop) that is connected to the router via an ethernet cable. What can be causing this?

THANKS!

System: HP notebook running Vista Home PREMIUM, 2GB RAM; fiber optic internet, wireless router.Power on the computer and tap the F8 button until you get to Advanced Boot Options... Select Safe Mode with Networking

Try browsing around for a while and doing whatever it is you do, and see if the problem is any better...

If it is better, then we'll have to do some software/virus MAINTENANCE to get it to work in normal mode...Thanks, EEVIAC. I'll try that this evening and report the results asap.

Solve : email "To" and "Subject" lines?

Answer»

I'm using Windows 7, Outlook 2003, and I.E.8 and Firefox
My wife's web site has an EMAIL link that auto inserts predefined "Subject" content depending on which link is used. When I click on a link, a new BLANK email pops up as usual but instead of the subject being in the "Subject" line, it's inserted into the "To" line (as "?subject=blabla") right behind the recipient's address. Trying to send the email then results in a failure. Using another computer with Outlook Express installed works properly.
I then checked other web sites and encounter the same problem. I've searched everywhere in Outlook for a setting to change but have found nothing that RESOLVES the problem. I tried running Outlook in compatibility mode but then I can't even get a blank email to come up.
I've posted the question in an Outlook Forum and a Windows 7 forum but have received no answers. I'm hoping for better luck here! ThanksThat sounds more like a website problem than an Outlook problem.

The website's HTML/PHP/ASP/whatever code needs to be written to detect Outlook 2003 (and, while you're at it, 2007 and 2010) and insert the fields in the right spots.

You might as well INCLUDE Outlook Express 6, Vista's Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird as well.

Solve : Move file from one user account to another?

Answer»

This is probably one of those noob type questions, but i'm cool with that considering i am a noob at this type of stuff.

I have Vista. I downloaded a file off the internet on my admin. account, and I want to copy it over to another users account. For some reason, (noob), I can't FIGURE out how, or if it's even possible. Thanks. You could always just copy it to a central location that both users can access.

You might need to take ownership with the second account.I could do that, but I never have to access anything on the other account, and they never have to access anything from mine. They just wanted this one file.

I just went into Windows Explorer and copied the file into a public folder. Then LOGGED on to the other account, moved it to the desktop, and installed it. Not sure if that was the easiest way, but it didn't take but a second to do and it got the job done.Yeah. Maybe that might be why they call it the public folder. Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 27, 2010, 11:12:28 PM

Yeah. Maybe that might be why they call it the public folder.

Refer to original POST. In Vista you can also share the public area on the NETWORK. But for security you have to indicate which users on the network are allowed to read and write in the public Ara. In XP this was called Shaded Documents. Not sure why the name change.

Anyway glad you got it solved and it seems that it was the right thing to do.The only network I have is my PS3 that's connected to the internet via wireless router. No other PC's/users.I FIND it much easier instead of going to My Documents, just go to Computer -> Local Disk C: -> Users.

Then you will see the folders for the different users on your system. Don't click on the folders with a "shortcut" arrow on the icon. Those will give you "Access Denied".

Instead click on the folder with the name of the User. That will open a window with a bunch of green folders that you can get into, like Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, etc.

Solve : Internet Cutting on and off?

Answer»

The problem started about at the beginning of the year when my browsers wouldn't work internet was fine just the browsers. Then after i reinstalled Vista my internet wouldn't connect, and to this day LAN won't work so i got wireless, but it didn't work at first it would disconnect within 5 min. A somehow fixed it. Then just earlier today after leaving a game on all night my internet wouldn't work. So after fooling around a bit and reconnecting the wireless receiver from it "hub" to directly into my PC i got internet. But now the problem is that it disconnects if I'm not on for a while or if i start this online game. What i have to do to fix it is pull it out then plug it back in then i works again. It's like to much bandwidth and it crashes, but what's weird is if it hasn't crashed it has 4/5 to 5/5 bars of connectivity.... or what ever those bars in network connections are called. What's wrong and how can i fix this?!?Need moar info:

1) Type of Internet Service: Cable, DSL, fiber, satellite?
2) Brand of wireless router?
3) Brand of wireless network adapter?

Particularly, with some DSL providers, they use something called "PPPoE," which often requires a user name and password to connect. It MAY even time out after a while if you don't have "Keep Alive" settings enabled (if you're using a router).

Also, you may need to download updated drivers for your PC's wired network adapter and/or your wireless adapter. This is how the connection goes
1. Phone Jack
2. Westell DSL brigde (i think)
3. TRENDnet 54Mbps Wireless Firewall Router --TEW432BRP--
4. TRENDnet TEW-645UB (Directly pluged into comp.)
5. Computer (Vista 32bit)Bypass the router temporarily...
What happens ?How would i bypass the router....its probably a good time to say there are 4 COMPUTERES in this house 2 desktops 2 laptops and mines the only one with this problem.Quote from: _TRAGIC_ on January 27, 2010, 12:02:21 PM

How would i bypass the router....its probably a good time to say there are 4 computeres in this house 2 desktops 2 laptops and mines the only one with this problem.

Since the problem is happening only with your PC, there's no need to bypass the router (at least for now).

Honestly, I've never been a FAN of TRENDNet products. With those, you get what you pay for.

My own bias aside, your best bet would be to install an updated driver for your TRENDnet TEW-645UB.

However, just for ****s and giggles, if that doesn't work, bypass the router anyway and see what happens. To do so, either:

a) Move your computer closer the DSL modem and connect an Ethernet cable from your PC to the modem.
b) Move the DSL modem to an unfiltered phone jack near your PC and connect an Ethernet cable directly from your PC to the modem.
or
c) Run a ginormous Ethernet cable from your PC to the DSL modem.

With either option, if your DSL uses PPPoE (a user name and a password), make sure that info is STORED either in the modem (if the modem can do so) or create a PPPoE dial-up connection on your PC.The thing is my computer won't recognize the cable....its like its not there but when hooked up to our laptop it works just not on my computer so pretty much its like there isn't a driver for using cableOpen Device Manager ? ?
See any Yellow !'s or ?'s ? ?

If so list them.Ya there 2 yellow !s they are
1.Ethernet Controller
2.SM Bus controllerQuote from: _TRAGIC_ on January 28, 2010, 08:11:30 PM
Ya there 2 yellow !s they are
1.Ethernet Controller
2.SM Bus controller

This is why you can't connect directly with a cable to the router/modem.

Solve : Vista (Basic) - COM port problem??

Answer»

Trying to update my Camera Detection unit on my Vista basic EMachines G720 (Dual Core, 2GB memory) without success. The laptop has 4 usb ports - when i try the DEVICE on each USB port they identify as COM 4,5,7 or 8. after the driver is successfully picked up. When i run the Updater software, it finds the device on whichever Com port is generated by whichever USB i plug it into; on every occasion it fails to detect and gives an error: 'Error 14: Flash detection software download failure'. I have used the recommended Flash uninstall program, reloaded and installed the latest Flash version recommended ; uninstalled & reinstalled the device software & driver but still the same result. Tried it out on a pal's PC (XP(Pro) and the device is detected and downloads ok (still gets the same error message thru another COM port) - same scenario on another Vista laptop (ie same error but picks it up via another COM port). I understand that Vista allocates the COM port dynamically but can't understand the problem with my laptop. I did notice in Device Manager that the advanced tab for the COM ports shows a number of Ports as 'In Use' but if i try to allocate a blank port there is no change. Anyone any ideas? 1) Name of camera detection unit please?
2) Are you using a USB to serial adapter?(1) TALEX unit
(2) No adapter - direct into the USB port(s) from the TALEX unit.

Thanks. Is this what you're TALKING about?

http://www.talex.co.uk/

If so, you'll need to contact their support to find out if they have a proper Vista driver...Yes,thats the one......but did contact their Support Team in the first place and they assured me that the unit, software &SUPPLIED driver were ok and that the problem lay with my laptop COM port settings. This was proved when the Talex unit & supplied software/driver worked ok on my pal's Vista laptop as i mentioned in my post - i have tried to compare settings on both laptops but not sure what i should be looking for....no COM ports identified in Device Manager on either laptop until the device is plugged into a USB port (when the device driver is detected and pops up in Device Manager)...run software and it searches for the device....finds device Serial No.ok on my mate's but Error 14 on mine.Hmmm...I can only think of a few other things from here:

1) The USB ports on your laptop MAY not be supplying enough power. Does this TALEX have its own AC adapter, or is it powered strictly by the USB cable?
2) Something else is conflicting with COM1. Try changing your actual 9-pin serial port to a different COM port and have the TALEX take COM1.
3) Are you running 64-bit Vista? 64-bit Vista Home Basic does exist (as pointless as it is, as its artificial/licensing limit on RAM is 4 GB)...

Solve : Ethernet port not detected....?

Answer»

HI

I was just wondering if anyone would help me. I have a MODEM which I have been using for 6 years but the last 2 years, using it on my laptop. Last month I did a factory RESTORE on my laptop but havent since then tried using the modem. Only yesterday I tried to set up the modem again i started getting this message (i think it might have deleted by accident during the restore process?):

No Ethernet ports have been found and an Ethernet CONNECTION was selected An Ethernet port is required to connect the modem to the computer.

I went into device manager all it had was microsoft 6to4 adaptor with a yellow exclamation mark next to it when I went to investigate further it said that it could not load drivers or something.

Anyways trying to take the initiative to fix it myself I uninstalled the driver thinking I can install it again but no such luck.
I went into the toshiba australia website downloaded a driver which looked like the right one (wired LAN) but it didnt work.

Tried doing a system restore but it wouldnt let me go further back than 9 january 2010. have tried downloading other drivers but i think theyre the wrong ones becuase it says ethernet network card? or do they just mean ethernet card component in the laptop?

All i know and i can remember is that it was realtek family fast ethernet LAN with some other NUMBERS. its not even showing up under LAN networks in network manager.

SO basically whenever I hook up the ethernet cable to my ethernet port no lights are flashing like it used to, neither on the computer nor the modem. Any suggestions pls.. am getting frustrated.

I am using Windows vista 32bit sp1 on toshiba satellite L300/302.

Much appreciated

Solve : Windows 7 and Legacy Software?

Answer»

Is anybody aware of a website that lists which older software programs - designed to run in Windows XP - can still be used successfully in Windows 7 and whether or not they require the XP Compatability Mode ?

I would like to know if Adobe Premiere Pro 1 and Syntrillium's COOL Edit Pro 2 will function fully.

I don't think they can be used with Vista.MICROSOFT says Win7 is designed to run as much XP software as possible. Because it is not 100% COMPATIBLE, they have provided XP Mode, which is a free download from Microsoft if you own Win7 Professional or better.

It is best to contact Adobe and Syntrillium for updated information on their readiness for Windows 7.

Maybe someone else here can refer you to a reference web site as you mentioned.http://www.microsoft.com/Windows/compatibility/windows-7/en-us/default.aspxCool Edit Pro = "Information COMING Soon"

Only Adobe Premiere "Elements" is listed.

VERSION 7 - Action Recommended = Get paid upgrade

Version 8 - Compatible

Cool Edit Pro is now Adobe Audition. When you have an old version, they usually want you to pay for an upgrade. For example, I have Nero 6 on XP. It is very full featured. It doesn't run on Vista. I have Nero Essentials in a later version for Vista, but it is very stripped down. Solution offered me - buy the upgrade!
All of Adobe CS4 works with Win7.Thanks everyone.

Solve : No internet access??

Answer»

Have now booted up in safe mode with networking, and i can connect to the internet and use my browser just like normal! works FINE with both cable and wireless while in safe mode!.... Now how can i solve the problem so that it works while not in safe mode? excellent progress..

We've now confirmed that this is a software issue.. Whether it be viruses or some RUN away driver/service/app, we should remove the possibility of viruses first..

What I would do now, is while in Safe Mode with Networking, download and install MALWAREBYTES (it's free)... Click on the "update" tab and update to make sure your using the latest definitions...Run the scan.. Download, install, update, and run "Spybot Search and DESTROY" (do not install the "tea timer" when you install spybot).... Run both of these, and if it finds/removes malware, try browsing again in normal mode and see what you get... If the anti-virus software doesn't find any malware, just post back...No need for anything more now! just solved the problem, i read on another website that norton sometimes occurs this problem, so i uninstalled Norton antivirus and rebooted. When i started my browser everything was back to normal!
Thanks a lot for all the help!good news

Safe Mode obviously disabled Norton services, which ALLOWED unrestricted browsing.. however it would be prudent to reinstall norton but just scale back the intrusivness of the AV software

Solve : Help with opening my programs?

Answer»

Recently I got the 'Vista Antivirus 2010' scam come up on my computer, I didn't choose to purchase the system. I went on to a different computer from my own and downloaded Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware to a usb, installed it on my own computer and ran the full scan. Once it had finished, I got it to remove all the infections. It then said that it couldn't remove some of the infections and told me to restart my computer. I did that but when it loaded my desktop it was a completely blank screen. I did ctrl + alt + delete and restarted my compter again. This time it loaded normally but the vista antivirus 2010 warnings were still coming up so i did the malware full scan again. This time it finished saying there were no infections, but because there had been no vista antivirus warnings coming up since the second full scan, i choose to leave it.
I haven't had any of these warnings since that last scan BUT now when i go to my desktop and try to double click on at shortcuts or if i go to the start menu and choose to click on any of my programs it will come up with this MESSAGE, "Windows cannot access the SPECIFIED device, path, or file. You may not have the appropiate permissions to access the item,"
This message happens to EVERYTHING. Firefox, itunes, paint, windows live messenger etc. The only way to open them is to right click the program and scroll down to 'start' instead of 'open'.
The 'start' looks quite dodgey aswell as it has no capital letter as the rest of the options do and to be honest i've never seen it before. But I may be mistaken with this, i'm not sure.

I have tried searching this topic but have only found ones where they can't open explorer and in my circumstance i cannot open anything. If there is a topic such as this one, then i am sorry for writing this topic and could you please send me in the right direction.
I also don't know if im in the right section of the forum either, this is my first time on this website.

Any help with my problem will be greatly appreciated. I suggest you go to the malware section of this forum and follow the instructions in the post at the top of that page.Oh thankyou, So it's a virus that I have then?Well, from your first post it sounds as though you may not have completely rid your system of the malware you had. One way or the other, let's make sure. Once we know for certain that your system is "clean" we can move forward to address any other issues that may remain.Well using the AVG anti-virus check and the anti-malware check they both say that there are no infections on my computer.Quote from: Geodudee on January 30, 2010, 06:24:27 AM

It's because of this that I suggested what I did. There is no harm in making sure - but it's up to you.Urgh, I don't know what I've done now but when i click on the programs it comes up with 'open with' and then it has recommended programs which includes itunes and firefox. If i click on firefox it will open firefox, same if i click on itunes it will open itunes.
I just want it to open whatever program i click on without all this hassle, it's really frustrating me. I'm sorry if what i'm asking sounds really stupid and simple to fix but my brother used to deal with all my computer problems but he's now moved country.Instead of complaining, go do what I suggested.okay, well I assume you mean the "Read this before requesting Malware removal help" Thread.

"AVG Users Only: If you still use AVG 7.5 you should update to the new AVG 9.0 now before continuing. AVG 7.5 is no longer supported by Grisoft so your PC is at risk! AVG 7.5 Free - Support ends 02/28/2009"

I did this, I downloaded the AVG 9.0. BUT as i said before I CANNOT OPEN PROGRAMS there fore it will not let me open the download.
Because I have AVG 8.5 I THOUGHT i would be okay, so i moved on.

"Step 2: House Cleaning

Download CCleaner Slim and save it to your Desktop"

AGAIN: IT will not let me open anything, It comes up with a warning saying Application not found.

I have no idea what I am doing right now, I do not understand any of these programs or what they are doing. I suggest you start posting your problem(s) with following those instructions in the malware forum and someone there will help you.thank youYep. Good luck.

When did this problem start? What if you turn off sleep mode?Try updating you video card drivers and windows update first.
Check if your video card has VPU recover (dont remember the exact name - it helps recover from
video card ERRORS) . Disable it and restart.Make sure your computer's power settings are correct and your computer isn't losing power from running on an extension cord. my computer does that every now and then and it does that because either there is a power problem somewhere(low power flow) or a video cars problem. Hi, This has happened since first use. I have latest drivers for Video card (GForce 7100GS) It crashes waking from sleep mode. I must admit I am new to Vista, but in Start Menu there is (L to R) the brown power button which says 'Puts your PC in low powermode etc. ( which I find ODD as this is the Standard Power Icon for ON/Off??) Then the 'Lock' button, then the arrow button which gives various options, which I use to either shut down, or sleep the PC. If I 'wake' it (after ENTERING sleep mode) it just crashes!!. Another point which may be connected is that on startup I get a dialogue box from IE saying there is a 'Scipt error, do I WANT to run with scripts?Yes or No' I select 'Yes' & carry on. I hope I have explained this adequately. AlexDon't use sleep mode. Period.
...or any of that kind of crap, for that matter. Thanks Broni, really helpful.........You're welcome

Solve : Windows Won't let me Select more than one item at a time in windows vista??

Answer»

okay, so you all know how you can move your mouse over several files and select them by holding in the left mouse button, or use ctrl + click, GO to the "EDIT" Menu and click "select all". well, Windows VISTA Won't let me do that, but only on my account, it works fine on other accounts. I Had the same problem several months ago and I got fed up with it to the point where I just made a new account and moved all my files over. that fixed the problem. but no it came back. if I try to go to the edit menu and click "select all" it won't let me because it is greyed out. I haven't changed anything. I don't want to have to go through creating a new account again because I have ALOT of files on my profile. I tried searching for anyone else who had the same problem, but nothing. it doesn't stop when i restart my computer. I've tried resetting all of the FOLDER settings but that didn't fix it. I Have windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit, if that has anything to do with it.Look at reply #3. Other posters said that the script solved their problem.

Best of luck.

Solve : Computer Shuts Off But Not Overheated?

Answer»

Anyone who could help I would greatly appreciate it!

I recently bought an ACER AST180-UA381B.
I run Windows Vista and it originally CAME with 1 GB of DDR2 RAM
The computer is expandable up to 4 GB, so I went to the local best buy and purchased 3 GIGA Bytes of RAM. I removed the original 1 GB and put in just 2 GB.

When using the computer for an hour or so, it will shut down. As I try to restart it will work for about 10-15 min. Then it will shut down again, then for only about 5 min. Eventually it won't run. I have to let it sit for SEVERAL hours to get back up to the 1 hour. I have let it sit in the BIOS menu and watched the temperature and it never rose more than 38 Degrees CELSIUS. I understand this can either be a power supply issue or a RAM issue, however I do not know how to dianose this and/or fix this. Can anyone help with any other suggestions as well? Thank you!Could be the new RAM overheating I guess. The BIOS temp display is only for the CPU I think. Or it could be faulty in some other way, like one or both modules not seated PROPERLY. It is simple to check if the RAM is causing the problem. Remove the new RAM, put the original RAM back, run the PC, see if the problem goes away. Did you get cheap RAM or RAM guaranteed to be compatible with your system?Try windows vista memory test (better then nothing

http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/test-your-computers-memory-using-windows-vista-memory-diagnostic-tool/

You could also put back in your old RAM and run it. If it doesn't shut down that that would tell you that you have some bad RAM.

Solve : Vista SP1 issues?

Answer»

This may already be a topic. If it is, please give me a link to it if it has been resolved.

I have been trying to update to SP1 for about a week now. I REALLY haven't TRIED anything different, like i've heard of on other forums. It gets to "stage 3", and then says it was unsuccessful. Then it TAKES about another half an hour to revert back to previous settings or something. If anyone knows of a way to completely update successfully, that would be great. Thanks.Try to disable your AV program.I'm chating with support now. We'll see how LONG this takes.

I will TRY that. Is there any way to replace the files from the VISTA disk? You sure can, but first, I'd like to see, if this IS Sidebar problem.I will turn it off. I have to tell you that I have had no problems SENSE I ran the FSC scan. Is it possible that the FSC scan fixed it. I UNDERSTAND that the file still has a problem. I was just wondering if the scan could have fixed the start butten and it locking up. It didn't happen a lot to start with but it hasn't happened for some TIME now. Just wondering.Quote

Is it possible that the FSC scan fixed it.

So, what's your current computer status? It is working fine now. As I said from the start this only happens every now and then. I turned off gadgets.I hope, it's gonna stay that way

Huh?Cheers,

Problem is I gopt the laptop as a "Free Gift" with a phone contact as such I have to PAY the postage to return it. If possible to fix at home will save me the postage cost If you fool with it you may make the warranty invalid. Those "free laptop" phone contracts are not exactly a scam, but they do contain traps and pitfalls for the unwary. For example, if you do anything to invalidate the phone contract, for example miss a certain number of payments, you then become liable for the whole price (as specified by the phone company!) of the laptop and the phone. Generally (check the contract) the laptop does not actually become your property until the end of the contract period -- which can be up to 3 years! -- and until then you are forced to play by the phone company rules as far as care of the machine, repairs and warranty cover are concerned.

As it is, you may have found a lucky getout, since they supplied you with a broken laptop. It may not be too late to get out of the contract. At any rate, if you fool around with it you may well find yourself in a difficult situation trying to prove it was faulty. It is too much of a risk in my opinion. Send it back, and consider the price of the postage the first lesson in a study course entitled "There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch".

Nice explanation, Dias. I had no idea that the phone companies were "giving away" LAPTOPS - what country?

irehs - Just curious - what laptop did you receive; make, model, specs, etc?

I had no idea that the phone companies were "giving away" laptops - what country?

They are becoming widespread in Great Britain to my knowledge. The British mobile phone market has been saturated for some while -- that is, practically everybody in the country has at least one, and the companies are desperate to get people to change their phone.

An increasing number of countries, particularly in Europe, now have more mobile phones than people. According to the figures from Eurostat, the European Union's in-house statistical office, Luxembourg had the highest mobile phone penetration rate at 158 mobile subscriptions per 100 people (158%), closely FOLLOWED by Lithuania and Italy. In Hong Kong the penetration rate reached 139.8% of the population in July 2007. Over 50 countries have mobile phone subscription penetration rates higher than that of the population and the Western European average penetration rate was 110% in 2007. The U.S. currently has one of the lowest rates of mobile phone penetrations in the industrialized world at 85%.

All the offers on this page are 18 month contracts, but some others are up to 3 years:

http://www.best-mobile-contracts.co.uk/gifts/laptops.aspx

Other "gifts" offered by mobile phone companies include: Sony PS3, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS Lite, Microsoft Xbox 360, LCD TV, Apple iPod Touch, Apple iPod NANO, Apple iPod Shuffle, Apple iPod Classic.

The truth is you are in effect renting the phone and laptop as a package for 18 months and at the end of that period you get an option to purchase the laptop for a nominal sum like £0.01.

They are all very well if everything goes OK but you could wind up with a heavy bill. You can generally get a better deal by buying a laptop and phone separately but for that you need cash up front or good credit and this is where these deals TEMPT some people, especially the financially naive.I suspect that you are right - pick the right plan, buy your own computer, save money = too simple, or, probably, too complicated.

Solve : Somehow running 2 .NET's in Vista services!?

Answer»

Hello

I RUN Vista Basic x64. I ran into a problem the other day where I could not open some of the tools in Administrative Tools, like Task Scheduler, Event Viewer, Computer Management, the Windows Firewall etc. I was ABLE to open services though.

Also, every time I tried to open one of these Tools, there was a brief pause, then a little Window would pop up saying, something to the effect of "Snap in CONSOLE is now installing"

It did this for all of the tools I mentioned, and it did it every time. It also never really fixed the problem. I still can't figure out what could have caused all of this and I about pulled my hair out searching on Google, trying to find an answer.

Finally I ran into an article that said something about updating the .NET framework to fix the problem. It said that maybe it's FILES might have gotten corrupted or something. So I figured "sounds good to me. I'll try it". And it worked!

After I installed .NET 3.5, I was now able to access all of those Administrative Tools. However I never thought about checking to see if I needed to run a x64 bit version of it or not. On the page of the version I downloaded, it said nothing about it being x64 bit or that it was designed to work in x64 bit.

But that's almost another issue. When I install a new or updated program or driver, I always try to remove the previous version through add/remove. But for some reason, this time, I didn't think about doing that. I just installed the new version right over everything.

I also forgot to check and see what folders for .NET were already in C drive.
The reason I'm telling you this, is because right after I installed this new .NET, I found that I now had two listings of it in services, and of course. we all know, there should only be one.

To give you the specific details. One entry says "Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_x64. The other says: "Microsoft .NET Framework NGEN v2.0.50727_x86"
No mention of any version 3.5 or whatever.

Then I went into C:\Program Files and I found a .NET folder that had only three .DLL's in it. I figure it must have been there awhile and that it's probably safe to get rid of (I still have it saved, just in case) so I deleted it. However I imagine your not going to agree with that action!!

Then I go to Windows and I find a .NET folder that I know was just put in there, because it had the same date that I installed the 3.5 version on. Now this is where it get's interesting. Inside this folder are two more folders. One says "Framework" and the other says "Framework64"

Now if you open up Framework, inside are five sub folders, each with version listings. Two of them are version 1's, one is a version 2 and the other two are version 3's, with that last folder, actually being 3.5. Also in that folder, along with the five sub folders, are a whole bunch of .DLL's

Now if you open up the Framework64 folder, things are a little different. There's only 3 sub folders. 1 version 2 folder and two version 3 folders, with, once again, the last one being 3.5. Also there's only about 4 .DLL's in there and that's it.

So that's the story. My system is actually working fine, but obviously something needs to be done to get rid of the wrong entry in services. And get the right .NET folders in the right place too and make sure everything works right.

I also need to find out if I should have installed a x64 bit version of .NET Framework or not. I CHECKED, and there are x64 bit versions available. I also need to find out what the default .NET is in Vista Basic x64. Is it x32 or x64?

But all I do know, is that by downloading this 3.5 version, it fixed my Administrative Tools problem. I worry now, that if I uninstall it, that I'll have the same problem again. And by the way, this one is now listed in the add\remove programs.

My final theory is that the .NET that was first in there may just have been corrupted and maybe needed a reinstall or a slight upgrade, or both. I think I should just uninstall everything I can related to .NET, registry entries and all, then find out the correct version to download and install it. Then check to see if I still have that original problem with Administrative Tools.

However I have a feeling you're going to have a different solution for me and that's fine.

Anxiously awaiting your response.

After plugging in all my equipment (monitor, tower, speakers, etc) Boots up, display works, graphics work, all data is there. I come to find out that the sound doesn't work however. Nothing is muted, the drivers have the most recent updates and the speakers work fine when plugged into my laptop. Tested a pair of working headphones as WELL and they work fine on other machines except for my desktop. Went through and uninstalled the sound driver and reinstalled the latest one, still no sound. Even removing the onboard sound driver data and installing the latest one directly from their website, still no sound. Went through my BIOS setup and turn the sound off and back on after a restart, still no sound. My father (a computer manager) mentioned that there could possibly be a blown fuse on the motherboard preventing the sound from working.

The only other thing that HAPPENED during my setup was that the plug for my surge protector was hit by me as i was moving about. My computer was on and in working order and when i hit the plug, it lost power to everything plugged in, however, it came back on without having to restart. My desktop display was still the same and everything was still working (besides my sound which wasn't working)

Second issue now. Shut down everything and wake up the next morning to find my computer wont turn on. Checked all the wires, all the plugs were in, the power switch on the back was turned on. No lights, no indication it was receiving power. My speakers, clock, and monitor plugged into the same surge protector as my desktop were still receiving power. Attempted different ports on the surge protector, still no power. Plugged directly into a working outlet, no power to my desktop.

After reading a different topic about my Power Issue, it seems to me that my power supply died (for whatever reason).

Now, I'm hoping that there might be some answers out there so any help would be appreciated.Did you actually replace power supply, already? Not yet, but I'm planning on doing so to test that out.
Ok, a techy friend of mine came over to have a look at my computer. Turns out, the battery on the motherboard came loose. So, popped it off, waited a few seconds, and then put it back on. Computer started up like nothing was wrong (though it did reload the default BIOS settings and somehow mistook what happened as a failed overclocking. Never tried to overclock my desktop at all.)

So anyway, what I'm probably going to do now is go and get a sound card for my desktop and see if that fixes the issue with the onboard sound of the motherboard not working (yet the drivers are recognized, and the device is "working PROPERLY")You may try to reinstall sound driver.

Solve : laptop screen black on start up after crashing?

Answer»

Yesterday, I purchased a Toshiba Satellite M305D-S4830 laptop. I loaded my previous computer's files onto it, and then wanted to see how Half Life 2 would look on it. After playing for about 30 MINUTES (it worked fine, looked awesome, no lag at all, etc.), my screen randomly turned into a small checkerboard pattern of red, green and other colored squares, the SOUND stopped and nothing worked. I turned it off and on again, and now on start up, the power button and BUTTONS at the top light up but the screen stays black. Tried letting it cool down for a while (put it next to the air conditioner for a minute), took the battery/ power cord out and put them back in... but nothing.

What in the world happened and how can I fix it? I'm going to return it to Best Buy today and, because of this, have decided to get a better laptop instead (the Toshiba A305-S6858). However, I'd like to fix it before then if possible so I can REMOVE my files, etc, because I used my brother's Steam account to set up Half Life and don't want to risk his account being hacked, lol.

Specs:
-Windows Vista Home Premium Edition OS, 64-bit
-AMD Turion X2 Ultra dual-core processor ZM-80 at 2.1GHz
-4GB of DDR2 memory
-250GB hard drive
-integrated ATI RADEON 3100 graphics

Any help is greatly appreciated!! Thanks! If I were in your shoes, I would just hand it over to Best Buy (seeing as you just bought it and it crashed on you).
Personally, I wouldn't TRY to recover data if the computer cannot boot anymore. (it might void your warranty)Ah, alrighty, thanks for the warning about the warranty issue. I'll just have my brother change the password for his Steam account, then. Thanks very much for the quick response! No problem. Good Luck!

Solve : BSOD Whenever New Programs Are Installed??

Answer»

My desktop running Windows Vista Home Premium gets the dreaded Blue Screen of Death every time I install something and reboot. Startup repair won't fix it, and I don't know what to do. Help? System restore won't work, I've detached all the PERIPHERALS from the computers, and system repair can't find anything to do. A little more info would help....

How long has this been going on?
Does it matter what you install? IE microsoft or other guys stuff....
How do you correct it? Reboot again? Uninstall? etc....
What does the error say? Exactly....can you copy and post it here?

What are the specs on your machine?

This happened for the first time about a month ago, a tech guy came over, and took off the peripherals and it worked. That fix won't solve it now. The last time it happened, it was with a Windows Update. This time a Canon camera program. I haven't corrected it, that's why I'm posting here....The error flashes too quickly for me to see exactly, but it says something like "IRQL_". That only happens when I select start normally, when I do system repair it says it can't repair anything. Can you reseat the RAM and than do a memeory test?

http://www.memtest86.com/

1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. Click Advanced system settings.

3. Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

4. Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

5. Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

6. Post exact error, you're getting.Sorry for the late REPLY, I've been really busy the last two days.
Anyway, the error is IRQL_LESS_OR_EQUAL
The specs are just your general crappy computer bought from BEST Buy. Hp Pavilion, 1GB of RAM, 100GB hard drive. Decent processor. If I unplug the printer and wireless picker-upper it will boot, but if they're plugged in when I boot, i get the error. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=314063&sd=RMVPIt's running Windows Vista Home Premium. Would just doing a re-install fix the issue? I've been thinking of doing one for a while now because of all the crapware on it.It would fix things if you don't have any hardware issues. It doesn't sound like you do.

I would try to uninstall some of the crapware. You MAY find that has fixed your problem. Many times memeory problems can happen with BAD software.

Ok, I think I figured it out. My Linksys Wireless receiver's drivers are messing it up.Did you fix it?What programs are these..win16/32 fat
I haven't gotten over to where the computer is today, but I'll let ya'll know. Not sure about Merlin's question.Nor is anyone else...

lol, i have obviously asked here because google was no good to me.

I don't understand how people can't use google effectively.

First result of googling "Windows 7"I happen to know a lot about Windows 7, then again, I am also sitting in the dark...

Okay, so, not the greatest amount of information, but a considerable amount.

The Windows 7 kernel architecture is based on Vista's Kernel Architecture... personally, I dont think Vista sucks.
They will be sorting quite a few THINGS out based on Vista's user input... one thing I must stress:
If a program doesnt work in Vista, it will NOT work in Windows 7 or ANY OS after it.

I do believe they are working to make Windows 7 less resource INTENSIVE, and are also redoing quite a bit of the interface, and improving tablet input. Sounds alrite, its true when you say vista eats at resources a fair bit. It consumes to much memory and eats at your ram.

Maybe windows 7 wont be the answer to our vista problems.Quote from: kizza1645 on August 27, 2008, 02:21:18 AM
Sounds alrite, its true when you say vista eats at resources a fair bit. It consumes to much memory and eats at your ram.
Thats because of the caching technology.

This is one article that explains it extremely well:
http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/archives/000688.html
It's beyond me, why people keep crying about RAM.
Oh, it's eating my RAM, oh, I'm low on RAM, etc., etc.
You want your computer to replace home entertainment center, have all those colors, aero, video, music, run 25 programs at the same time, and you still want new operating system to use 128MB of RAM like Windows 98, 15 years ago?
It's not gonna happen.
What's the big deal here?
You can work at McDonald for minimum wage, and you can buy 2GB of RAM for one day of work.
Not long time ago, you'd have to be Bill Gate$ to do so.
Maybe, someone will explain it to me.
Anyone who states openly that Vista is a RAM hog has absolutely no idea how Vista was designed to handle RAM...

It's a good point. But anyone has freedom of speech to say what they feel is wrong or right?
so who cares.I have to admit when Vista first came around I initially thought of it as an uber resouce hog too.
But then I used this handy thing called "The Internet" (anyone heard of it??) to do some research and read about the SuperFetch process.

Vista does manage your system memory a *censored* of a lot better than XP.

That's true, people do have freedom of speech, but you need to ask yourself, "am I forming an opinion based on facts or based on how things have been done in the past?"

Just because things were done a certain way in the past doesn't make it the "right" way or the most efficient.I will say this:
There is definitely no need to upgrade to Vista from XP. If you have XP now, I dont see reason to upgrade everything unless Vista offers something you really need.
If you get a computer with Vista, STAY with Vista. There isnt any reason to downgrade to XP.

You know, when I got XP, I had some program that worked in 98 that no longer worked in XP. My poor home DESIGN software... why has thou forsaken me with outdated DirectX API?

Solve : Vista SP1 and realtek High definition audio?

Answer»

prob: No SOUND at all.

Steps taken include removal of Sound driver, reinstallation of sound driver, fruitless web searches leading to the very same driver that was attempted to install several times, and general hair-pulling.

System is an Acer Am1100-E1203A. RealTek High Definition AUDIO On-board.

Apparently Windows Update installed SP1, (and/or a different driver) and now refuses to play sounds. Sound programs still detect that there is a sound device and gleefully USE it,but no output is heard.

Speaker connections have been checked and re-checked (and then checked again).

System restore has been of little use. only two items are shown, a System restore Undo point, and another one. Neither one works however, usually with system restore complaining simply that it failed after reboot.

Searches on the net have turned up (as I said) essentially fruitless solutions, but has illustrated quite readily how common this problem is.

Any thoughts?

(Also, I'm not the one personally experiencing this- I'll try to get them to COME in here themselves however, so they can be... um... directly interrogated)I would've recommended rolling back the driver from Device Manager properties, but that may be moot since the driver was removed and/or reinstalled.

Is this the driver you were looking for?

http://www.acerpanam.com/synapse/data/7117/documents/RealTek Audio Driver Vista.zipthanks- I'll get my friend to try that one- will post back with results
GRRRRRRRRRR.

After over a half hour if simply getting them to unzip it and run setup.exe, finally installing it, and rebooting. It still didn't work for them

strange, I thought

very strange.

So I had them doublecheck all the connections, AND use a different cord.

response: "i got it goin"

almost a week of troubleshooting to fix it, and when it's finally fixed, the exciting climax, where everything comes together was:

"i got it goin"

.... Anyway, it turned out that he used a different cord for the speakers and now it works. All this after going through services (WIndows Audio Service), installing,REINSTALLING ,uninstalling drivers, attempting to uninstall Vista SP1.... THe problem was the bloody cord.

Last time I make assumptions about stuff people check before getting outside help.

GRRRRRRRRRRR.

(oh well, at least he has the manufacturers driver rather then the generic RealTek one...)

Solve : Problem saving an old document?

Answer»

I have a Dell INSPIRON 1501 running on Microsoft Vista home basic, with Microsoft office 2007. Occasionally when I open a document and make some changes I cannot save the document. I must save the document with another name. For example I have a CLIENT list with addresses and email addresses. If I open the document, "CLIENT LIST 2008", and make some changes when I hit the save icon it asks for another name of the current document. So I end up having to save it as CLIENT LIST 2008A and then delete the original document CLIENT LIST 2008 and then rename CLIENT LIST 2008A to CLIENT LIST 2008, the original document. It's a pain in the a**. What must I do to just save my documents to the original name.

PeterI don't use 2007 - still make do with OLD 2000.

Occurs to me tho that MAYBE somewhere the file is being seen and regarded as read only - and so need for file change because write is not allowed for a save. I can only think of plowing thru your preferences/options in relevant application to see if there is some SETTING available to change.

Or even the original file attributes. Also, you may need to take ownership of a directory, you're saving those files to.

Solve : installed wrong recovery disk?

Answer»

Our COMPUTER crashed - fried motherboard. We are Americans living in Africa so couldn't buy new parts here, had to order from States. When it got here, we realized we didn't have our recovery disk for Windows XP media center edition for our HP desktop. We ordered a new recovery disk from HP, but would take a month to get here. We remembered our friend had left a recovery disk with us for his Everex laptop running Windows Vista. We didn't know anything about Vista so thought we could just USE it for the month while waiting XP recovery disks to get here. That was really stupid! Now we cannot get Vista off the computer. At first it wouldn't let us format the partition. We used KillDisk to WIPE the partition, but still cannot get Vista off. When we try to copy the KillDisk to a DVD to be used in DOS to wipe the other partition, Vista will not allow us to burn it. We've tried about a million DIFFERENT things - it's like Vista has a mind of it's own and doesn't want to be removed! Please help!

Solve : Help removing a second Vista operating system from my computer.?

Answer»

I am running Vista on my computer but somehow ended up with two operation systems when I did a new install. I have a new one on my C drive that I want to KEEP and an old one on my D drive that I want to remove. How do I remove the second operating system? Do you have any DATA or programs on D:? If not, reformat the drive.I have tried to reformat through Acronis and Vista. I keep getting messages that the drive in UNABLE to be formatted. I can't seem to gain access or permissions to reformat the drive. If you have windows disk full install, you can just use it to delete D drive's data.

When I did that a long while back, I had installer MAKE a new partition, which was in other drive.

I don't know / remember what would happen if you simply deleted the unwanted partition and rebooted as is.Thanks for the suggestions

I should make clear that both my operating systems (C, the one I'm using and, D, the one I want to remove) are in separate partitions on the same disk.

I have tried to delete D, but again, I am told I am not allowed to delete system files or am just unable to do so. Also since trying that, I am getting boot errors ("bootmgr is missing"). Consequently I have been having to use the installation disk to repair and boot up. There was no poblem with it until I started trying to remove the unwanted operating system. The system is now acting LIKE it is on its way to crashing. I do have backups fortunately.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.
Nothing difficult is ever easy

Since you have backups, why not re-partition and re-install Windows.

Download the 'tools' from your hard drive manufacturer's website and re-partition and re-format.

Best of luck!Try this partition manager. It worked for me.

Solve : Getting Access....?

I just did a SYSTEM upgrade to vista from xp home. Eveything went PRETTY smooth except for in "my documents" folder, when I try to open "my music" folder it say I don't have permission to access this folder. I am the only admin on the ACCOUNT. I tried to allow access but it won't let me. How can I change this so I can access my music?I found this. It looks like he's having the same problem that you're having. Perhaps, it might help.

http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/118340-folder-access-denied-unable-display-current-owner.htmlFrom Our Archives...I read the articles and tried a couple things to no avail. I am the only user on my computer. I own the folder YET I can't access that and it only happen after an os upgrade. Do you think the folder is just currupt?Tried taking ownership of the FILE?

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308421
(in Patios link)you could log on as an admin and then change the permissions to block your user profile from the folder and then save it. Then go back in and give your user profile full control (make sure all the other correct boxes are ticked/unticked. If this dont work log on as another use try access the folder and if you can then copy all the music to a pen drive or what ever. then on your blocked account make a new my music folder and copy all the music over.

Solve : Black screensaver ??? keeps popping up?

Answer»

I have a black screen after IDLING for a few minutes.

It used to be a firedog ad (from Circuit City) screensaver, but I managed to delete that file (fdscreensaver.exe) by going through safe mode. I thought that WOULD cure the problem, but now I get a black screen as a screensaver. I keep searching through the files but can't seem to figure out what to delete. It's not in the programs and features area or in the list of screen savers.

If someone could please help me, I'd really appreciate it.

By the way, I have Windows Vista if that helps any.

Thanks. you will need to CHANGE your screensaver serttings to a screensaver that is on your computerI did change my screensaver to that bubbles one and set it to come on after 30 minutes. Windows Update Failure

This is a not uncommon problem, particularly after either a major hardware upgrade or a Windows reinstall. There are 3 probable causes for the problem:

1. The Windows Update Temporary folder is corrupted.

2. Update Agent 3.0 is not installed properly.

3. Installer 3.1 is corrupted.

Here’s how to fix them:

1. Clean up Windows Update temporary folder

1.1. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net stop WuAuServ

1.2. Click Start, Run, type: %windir% and press Enter.

1.3. In the opened folder, rename the folder SoftwareDistribution to Sdold. You will loose your history but not important.
1.4. Click Start, Run, type: cmd and press Enter. Please run the following command in the opened window.

Net start WuAuServ

2. Reinstall Windows Update Agent 3.0

2.1. Download the file from the following link:

http://download.windowsupdate.com/v7/windowsupdate/redist/standalone/WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe

2.2. Save the file to C: drive Root (C:)

2.3. Click Start, Run, type: "C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce" (without quotations) and then press Enter to install the Windows Update engine. (There is a space between "C:WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe" and "/wuforce")
Note: If you are using Windows Vista, please save the downloaded file to the D: drive, because the file cannot be LAUNCHED directly from the C: root directory.

3. Reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 (important)

3.1. Press Start and choose Run.

3.2. Type in "cmd" (without quotation marks) and press OK.

3.3. In the command line, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /unregister (Note: there is a space before the “/”)

3.4. Then, type in the following command and press Enter:
MSIexec /regserver (Note: there is a space before the “/”)

4. Now, try running updates again. If they still fail, then you’ll need to do a reinstall of Windows Installer:

4.1. Start, click Control Panel, and click Add/Remove Programs to check if Windows Installer 3.1 has been installed.

4.2. If it has, highlight and remove it.

4.3. After that, reinstall Windows Installer 3.1 from the following link.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&DisplayLang=en

This should fix the problem

Try all of the above, for me it was REINSTALLING Windows Installer 3.1. When you try the deferent choices close all windows before doing the other ones. That was my problem the first time and if it doesn’t fix it then look at Microsoft’s support site. It should be a free email dealing with Windows Update problems. When I emailed them they gave to other options but they were for research purpose and they were for my email address and topic number. Quote from: tomshope on September 12, 2007, 04:52:41 PM

This worked for me I was having the same problem!Toms method worked very well on my PC but as the posting was a few months old please be aware you might need to download a windows installer for Update pack 3 of XP as this refers to update pack 2How it going with this one? I assume your knowledgeable. If it's still not fixed, Perhaps their is something goofed in the auto update configuration. I stumbled upon this utility, Dial-a-fix when I was looking to help you. Dial-a-fix is a collection of known fixes gleaned from Microsoft Knowledgebase articles, Microsoft MVPs, and other important support forums, that will assist you in repairing problems with your SYSTEM. Although this tool is ordinarily meant for power users, technicians, and administrators, it is quite safe to use even without technical guidance (although it is recommended). Simply choose the solutions you wish to apply via checkmarks, and click GO. There are other BUTTONS and tools present on the main dialog as well, such as the policy scanner. All tools and checkmarks identify their purpose when you mouse over them. I can't guarentee anything but I would try this for your problem and see if you can get anywhere.
