Solve : Windows Mail?

Answer»

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. Always have had trouble with the mail program (I've only been a computer user since December 07). When I started, I was on MSN dial-up service because I was also on web-tv. I've since cancelled web-tv and now am on high speed internet, cable modem, Grande Com. I've tried deleting everything having to do with dial-up, but i still GET a pop-up telling me to connect to my dial-up ACCOUNT when I try to use Windows Mail. I don't have one in the accounts SECTION. What the heck am I missing this time? It always defaults to Windows Mail when I try to forword a pic or something similar.

JimYour answer: http://ask-leo.com/why_does_my_computer_keep_wanting_to_dial_a_connection.htmlDid what the link says. Still getting the pop-up. Quote from: jtmt on September 01, 2008, 04:46:41 PM

... i still get a pop-up telling me to connect to my dial-up account when I try to use Windows Mail. I don't have one in the accounts section.
So, the only account you now have in Windows Mail is your NEW Grande Com email account?

I don't understand this part of your message. Is Windows Mail your default email program? If not, then what is?Grande is set up as my default under accounts in the windows e-mail program. It's the only account listed under accounts. When I try to forword something off a web page, it still goes through windows mail and then I get the pop-up saying to connect. I'm ALREADY connected.

Solve : Setting up user accounts, how to hide your personal files from those users?

Log into that account, can you still access your photos on your own account while logged in as the limited user? If so, something must be a bit off with your setup.

Yes, I can definitely still see every file and folder from that second account... I have set it up as limited, and I have passworded mine as protected. hmmmmm...

Did you log out of your account before acessing the new one?Try Magic FOLDERS - it's an awesome, easy program. Folders that are 'hidden' just don't show. Period.

Yes... I logged out. And I'm using Xp Pro.

It's not do-able... Windows says (above) that it can only hide files and folders to another user in ONE SINGLE FOLDER.... My Doc's. It says in Help that the option to make private is only available in this one single C-Drive folder! Good ol' MS.

I've just burnt/moved everything so thanks all for your imput...

Right click the file you don't want her to see and select properties.

Click the Advanced button and put a check mark next to "Encrypt contents to secure data"

This should make the file unreadable to other users.

Make sure by logging into her account and trying to access the file from there.

Hope this does it for ya.

If you are using XP Pro that was formatted using NTFS then that should have worked.
Did you try it?Chad - For futures, this program is awesome and will hide any and all folders.

FYI.

Not true for Magic Folders.O.K. I will accept that Magic Folders is superior to what I experienced.

My experience of whatever it was I had installed was that it worked on folders in the internal drive C:\, and also on any folders in the External USB connected partitions, BUT suddenly the external hidden folders became public - I then realised that investigating a problem on a totally unrelated product, I had examined exactly how that product operated "NOW" and then restored a disc image taken when I thought that product worked properly - and in the restored "OLD" state the external folders suddenly appeared - they were no longer hidden. That was when I realised that the "Folder Hider" software had NOT hidden my folders, it had merely blindfolded my LATEST version of the Operating System to ignore what should have been hidden, hence I deduced that anything "hidden" on my external drive, or anything hidden on a Flash drive, what NOT be hidden if that device was taken / stolen and plugged into any other computer.
I complained to the "Folder Hider" supplier (can't remember the exact name) and it was they who assured me that all such programs had this limitation.

Sorry to cast a slur on Magic Folders - I just wanted to warn others of an unexpected possible pitfall.

Sorry to cast a slur on Magic Folders - I just wanted to warn others of an unexpected possible pitfall.
I don't know that you did cast a slur; I have no interest in Magic Folders - have just used it for years and never had a problem with it.

I'm not sure I understand the sequence of events that you DESCRIBED above, but, I have not done a disk image with folders hidden; so, I don't know: a) if they would be imaged and b) if they are imaged, would they be visible after the image is copied.

Regardless, for the stated purposes of jj3000, to "hide" data on his computer from a snooping housesitter, Magic Folders would work great - and, I suspect that the program that you referenced would also.Short explanation in case anyone needs to know

Image is taken of System drive C:\
"Folder Hider" installed, and existing folder C:\Private is hidden
also create and hide folders C:\Secret and, on USB, F:\Keep_Out

Everything is hidden that should be hidden

From here on forwards, if drive F:\ is connected to a different computer, F:\Keep_Out is visible.

Restore previous image :-
C:\Private reappears exactly as it was before being hidden - as expected
C:\Secret just does not exist - no security breach.
Drive F:\ was not restored so \Keep_Out still exists, and is no longer hidden because the Operating System is no longer blindfolded.

OOPS
I wondered if magic Folders would work on FAT32 so I used your link.
I got no relevant information from XP help at http://www.pc-magic.com/mfxt.htm.

Relevant information from 95 help at http://pc-magic.com/emft.htm#t25
FAT32 - NO PROBLEM

Removable drives
You shouldn't use Magic Folders or EMF on removable drives. Although the files and filenames would remain encrypted and SCRAMBLED on other computers (if you're using EMF), the folders and files would not be hidden, for EMF or Magic Folders.
In addition, Magic Folders and EMF don't mark hidden folders, they just filter file requests against your list of hidden folders. Therefore any removable media with folders with the same name as the one you hid would have their folders hidden as well, and in the case of EMF, their files would be encrypted too. We may in a LATER version include the disk ID or volume name in the hidden folder list, but we haven't done that yet.

That supports my fears and warning.

NB Even Drive C:\ is removable, and hidden folders will be public, should it be taken out of your P.C. and connected to another - e.g. because you took it to a computer service man, or because your computer has been stolen.

Alan

This is still the case with MF. If it is contemplated that security will be needed if a drive is removed, then Encrypted Magic Folders is necessary. Then, in the event a drive is removed, the files will become "unhidden" but the contents will still be encrypted.

Some perspective is in order: I suggested this program for this OP's situation, which I would classify as a low threat situation. I do not mean to imply (and perhaps I did) that MF is a high security program for critical security or privacy applications, clearly it is not. For "paranoid" situations, I would use True Crypt. For normal, "I don't want the wife to see my picture collection," situations, or, "I don't want the boss to see my resume," I would use MF or EMF.Quote from: Zylstra on August 24, 2008, 10:14:05 PM

If you have a limited user account for the House Sitter why not just Hide the files you want privite? Right Click the Folder or File that you want privite, select Properties, and select Hidden from file attributes. Unless she logs in with your password, she won't be able to see the Hidden folders or files.
Unless, you simply go to:
Tools> Folder Options> the "View" tab, and select "Show Hidden and System Files"

Zylstra,
That's not true. Activate the "Guest" account on the computer and allow the sitter tho use that account. Your account on the other hand should be password protected to login, so no one can log into your user account. Any files, other than program files, in your user account can't be seen by anyone unless they log into your user account. You can't go to Explorer and see folders in other user accounts that are "Password Protected" Even if you try to go to C:\documents and settings you can veiw the accounts but you can't access them if they are "Password Protected"!!Still, its not secure to do that, I guess thats what I am trying to say.

It hides them, but, with effort, they can always be found.

Solve : Systray Icons missing after start-up - lonely Clock !!!?

Answer»

After the usual power-on start-up sequence I can apply may password and log on.
About 5 seconds later I get my desktop background, and another 4 seconds later the task bar complete with the clock icon arrives, and all the desktop shortcuts appear.

During the next 10 seconds - sometimes stretching to 60 Seconds, the Clocks neighbours appear ( "Volume", Safely Remove Hardware", etc. ) - or perhaps they don't.
After this the P.C. is ready for me to use.

My son tells me that this is a known issue with Windows XP. I believe him but am still not yet ready to follow his advice and use Vista.

Is there any advice or known fixes that you can suggest for this known issue ?

Additional information :-

I have XP Home edition. Whilst using SP2 it had a 90% chance of a full house upon start-up, and typically on the 10% when it failed there were still at least a random choice of at least 3 of the 5 that should arrive.

This week with SP3 there was only a 50% chance of a full house, and a 40% chance that some of the icons will appear, with a 10% chance that nothing will come and sit next to the clock.

I have significantly improved the chances of success by removing ERUNT from my start up folder, and arranging that it only performs its 50 MByte Registry backup AFTER all the icons have appeared.

My remaining problem could be my Antivirus ESET NOD32 version 2.7. On the few start-ups since I removed ERUNT from the start-up processing most of the icons appear and the system is ready 15 to 20 seconds after I log on, but twice it took up to 60 seconds with few if any icons APPEARING BESIDE the clock, and each time I got a message from ESET that it had downloaded AND INSTALLED a new virus signature update. Whenever the start-up was reasonably quick and most icons appeared it was because ESET found it was up to date and there was nothing to download and install.

I know that ESET problem will go away if I prohibit automatic updates, but that is only a partial solution should there be other things on start-up that are also variable.

I do not want to endanger my virus protection with what could be only a partial fix.

I would much rather do something to PROPERLY fix this, even if I have to hack the registry - just please don't tell me to install Vista !!!

Regards
Alan
do you see a large arrow pointing to the left near your clock? Something like this.... <

If you click on it you should see all the programs that you are talking about.

If you want them to be shown all the time right click on the task bar and pick properties than uncheck the box called "Hide Inactive Icons"

No - no such arrow.

Did as you say, and found the "Hide Inactive Icons" was already unchecked.

This evening I had a fairly quick start-up, and ESET NOD32 found nothing to update,
BUT I still suffered loss - the ESET icon and the Power/battery icon failed to appear.

The bottom of the screen now appears as attached

Alan

[recovering disk space -- attachment deleted by admin]It looks like you have another tool bar above the task bar. Can you tell me what that is?

Also you can try to right click the task bar ....properties and than next to the "Hide the Icons" box is a custom button. Click it and than pick what icons you want to show or just click restore defaults.

Thanks. You may be on the right track here.

To the right of the "Hide the Icons" box is a "Customize" button which I never considered because it was greyed out. I have just checked the "Hide ..." box and that has enabled the button.

Upon clicking I see a lot of items
Under Current Items it shows
Volume,
Comodo Firewall, and
Safely Remove hardware.
This correctly identifies what is sitting next to the clock right now.
Past Items has 23 members, including my absent friends
ESET NOD32, and
ON AC power

I was very excited to see that each were set to "Hide when inactive"
and that setting could be changed to "Always Show" or "Always Hide",
and thought that by using the "Always Show" option it would give double certainty
that together with UN-checking the "Hide ..." box these icons would have to appear.
Unfortunately upon closer examination only 25 of the 26 items were set to hide,
and the one item set "Always Show" is the ESET NOD32 icon,
and this is NOT showing even though task Manager can see both the ESET SYSTEM and ESET User interface processes - I am still protected - it is only the icon that failed.

So I think this is not much better than a no hoper after all,
but now you have introduced me to this facility I will set what I need to "Always Show" before I return the "Hide ..." box to unchecked state.
I will get back to report success if it works.

There is no tool bar above the task bar - what you can see is the bottom corner of the Firefox browser which was in use at the time.

Thank you for your efforts

Regards
Alan
Hi

The icons were better behaved and appeared correctly at start-up for two days, but I think that was just luck and/or no overnight anti-virus updates for ESET to catch up on.

It is now just as bad as it was previously, and I have seen only the Volume icon appearing beside the clock.

Further suggestions to fix this would be welcome.

ALTERNATIVELY :-

I could paste icons on the bottom right of the desktop immediately above systray,
and these icons could be short cuts needing a double click to launch whatever HAPPENS to be missing from systray.

I know what and how to do this for my anti-virus and Firewall.
I would appreciate help with the relevant path and file name as short cuts to :-
Safely Remove Hardware;
On AC Power
Volume

I could alternatively/additionally try adding such shortcuts to the conclusion of my supervisory batch file, and I would appreciate advise upon any additional option switches/modes etc that would avoid giving me a second set of the same icons when the INITIAL start-up has provided all that I needed.
Is there any way that my supervisory batch file could detect which icons are already in place, and which have not arrived ?

Alan

Solve : Removing Vista from old Hard Drive??

Answer»

Hello! I hope this hasn't been asked before, but if it has i couldn't find it. I am buying a new PC, which should arrive tomorrow. It will have WINDOWS 7 64 bit. I currently have a machine running Vista 32 bit. I would like to take the Hard Drive from my old computer and add it to my new one as long as there is ROOM for it. I've seen people online talking about a "Dual Boot" machine, which isn't what I want to do. I would actually want to uninstall Vista from the old Hard Drive.

Can this be done? If so, how? Also, how dangerous is it? I'm not a computer expert (obviously) and don't want to attempt to do something over my head and lose all my stuff! Thanks for your help. Are you PREPARED to lose EVERYTHING on the drive? If so, simply format it. Install the drive in the new system, boot up, open disk management, find the drive you want to format, right-click on it, format. Simple process. And don't worry, Windows will not allow you to format the drive to which you have booted. No, basically what I'm trying to do is avoid transferring all my files and re-installing all my games. New PC has a 1TB hard drive so space isn't the issue. Can't be done...all APPS need to be re-installed.

Solve : Help: cannot use my laptop because of vertical lines on screen?

Answer»

I have an HP pavilion dv5 laptop and I am experiencing vertical lines on the screen which do not go away, and return after rebooting. I have read some other threads with similar issues; however, my laptop becomes completely unusable after these lines appear. This same problem happened REGULARLY about 1 and a half months ago, but went away following a system restore. My battery is PRETTY much shot, and I don't know if that would have anything to do with this problem. When the lines appear I am FORCED to shut the laptop down and restart it, only to have it happen again. I took my battery out for most of the day yesterday, and I was able to use the laptop for an hour or two today before the lines returned. I have no idea what to do, and I have system RESTORED like 5 times in the past week, but nothings has worked. Please help.

Problem: BSOD only when connecting to a specific, unprotected wireless network in a matter of minutes (may vary between 1 minute to 15 minutes).

What I have tried: Before formatting: tried some free registry correctors and restoring system. After formatting, I updated the BIOS, and reinstalled/updated the following drivers: chipset, video, sata, ethernet and wlan. Minidump files from 3 BSODs are attached.

Safe mode with network: no BSOD so far (it has been 1 hour since I connected to the wifi network).

What says the BSOD: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"
3rd BSOD STOP code: 0x0000007F (0X0000000000000008, 0x0000000080050031, 0X00000000000006F8, 0xFFFFF80002A8C798)

Description: For 2 months since I got this laptop I had no problems using wired and wifi networks. But just when I BROUGHT my laptop to mom's place, where I will be living for 2 months, I'm getting
BSOD everytime I try to connect to the wifi network here. The last 2 BSODs occurred 1 minute after I connected to the wifi network, but the OTHERS time varied.
When my wifi adapter is on, but not connected to any network, everything works fine. I get no BSOD or any other errors.
Before formatting, and after the firsts BSODs I've got a file called mfewfpk.sys corrupted, that seems to be related to McAfee antivirus. No viruses were detected by it and Malware Bytes Antimalware.
As I couldn't find any solution, I formatted everything, but the problem still occurs.
Other laptops and computers connected to the wifi network, each with different OS (like the one I'm using, which is WinXP Home Edition SP2), work fine.

Whose network would that be?
It's the network from my mom's place. It's a private network, but has no password. My problem is solved. It was ZoneAlarm's fault.
I first tried some hotfixes. It seemed to work for a while, but when I updated ZoneAlarm, the BSODs started to flash again.
As I couldn't stay much on the net without getting a BSOD to install the 4th hotfix and then the SP1, I uninstalled the firewall. Since then, I've got no BSODs (couple hours ago). Nevertheless, I INSTALLED SP1 and changed my firewall to Comodo. The antivirus is still Avira, but I intend to change back to McAfee, as I acquired an year license.
Thank you very much!Good job

Solve : windows 7 Ultimate Error Message `Importer has Stoped Working`?

Answer»

I have a 4 core 32 bit machine RUNNING Windows 7. The software I am using is Pinnacle Studio 15 (Movie Maker ) EVERY time I try and open Pinnacle I get the error message
`Importer has STOPPED Working` Windows is searching to find the problem, it never does. Pinnacle say its not the programme and should try re installing Windows 7 !!!
Can't get any sense out of Windows any ideas would be most welcomeI have the same issue and am still looking for a solution. I opened it once and then it would not finish loading. Studio 12 now also has the same problem.Thank you for your reply. After a very frustrating backwards and forwards to Pinnacle they still would not acept that V14 & V15 are prone to lose Importer files, or can not access them.

I bit the bullets last weekend and reloaded Windows 7. I have to say that the Pinnacle is working OK. I have had another go at Pinnacle but they are not replying to my Emails.

It would be good idea to get someone to load Windows via BIOS it MEANS pressing F5 on start up. My computer friend then changes the start up drive to CD Rom this stops Windows picking up all bits it leaves behind when you just format the C drive in normal mode.

Sorry I have no quick solution to our problem.

Solve : win7 pop-up , help needed?

it says it will make my pc quicker

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]I think it means if you plug your USB device into specified usb ports, you should be able to read/write from it faster.

For example, if you have a USB 2.0 device, and you plug into a usb 1.0 port, usb device will still work fine but at the slower speed of the older port.

That's my take on it, if anybody else got any other ideas... thank you for that , but i need someone to tell me which port ( or other ) to plug it into USB (Universal Serial Buss) has two versions: the older 1.1, 12 megabit per second standard (mbs), and the newer 2.0 capable of 480mbs, Both USB devices, and the interfaces you might plug them into, are either version 1.1 or 2.0.
Windows is telling you: you have a 2.0 device plugged into a 1.1 interface. As a result it'll perform slower than it could. If you were able to plug it into a 2.0 interface then the device would be able to operate at full speed.
The difference between 1.1 and 2.0 is a difference in hardware
If you have a machine with USB 1.1 interfaces the only real alternative, SHORT of upgrading to a newer machine, is to purchase a USB 2.0 add-in card. The USB ports provided by that card will be the higher speed 2.0, while your older USB interfaces on your machine will remain 1.1.
Or try the ports. So as not to see the messagethanks moro, can you tell me where to GO in the pc and find out what i have , harryThe recommendation on the pop up says you are using a USB hub. I don't know why windows would think you have a hub if you don't.

Most External USB drives are "composite USB devices" which are the same as USB hubs. Basically if something SCREWS up while it's being detected it can be seen as a Hub.

Given Harry's system appears to only have USB 2.0 (Standard Enhanced PCI to USB as opposed to just PCI to USB controller) I think the message can be ignored.

Solve : How to install XP & Win7 exclusively??

Answer»

I would like to INSTALL both Windows XP & Windows 7 on the same PC, clean, vanilla, from scratch.

Problem is the setup.
Should I install XP in the first partition 0, then Win7 in partition 1 afterwards? Will Win7 put some boot files/folders into partition 0 in order for it to work/boot properly? I prefer if Win7 doesn't put boot files into the same partition as XP, since I want to IMAGE the partitions after installation and maybe swap about with XP & some other OS (linux or 98 or something else).

Should I CREATE a BOOT partition 0 first then install XP into partition 1 and Win7 into partition 2?

If I did this, then I could install my own boot loader (GRUB4DOS) in partition 0... and don't have to worry about Win7 boot files lingering in XP partition etc.

How to manage all this? Please ADVISE... ALWAYS install the older OS first. The bootloader will be taken care of with each subsequent OS installation.

Are you 100% sure you don't have a password for your EMAILS?

Have you tried entering a blank password, or getting in TOUCH with your email provider to find out what the password should be?

I never HEARD of an email account that requires no password. I suspect your account has always had a password and that you are not aware of it, PERHAPS because the account was setup for you in your software by someone else and you never encountered a need to know it until now. In other words, the password was saved in your email program, so you never needed to enter it.

How did you do email before getting the new computer?

Solve : Windows wont load.?

Answer»

So this is my problem. I am running Windows 7 ( A bought copy) with 4 GB RAM and using Nvidia GEForce 9600 GT as a video card, not sure about some other stuff though. My computer got stuck while playing a game so I restarted the computer, then it asked me if i want to launch startup repair or to start windows normally, if i choose "start windows normally" it would get me stuck on "starting windows" and show me the windows logo. The "busy" LED on my computer goes red and my computer gets stuck, and I cant do anything. If I chose startup repair it would go through some loading procedures and get stuck on a black screen, again I cant do anything and the "busy" LED goes red. I used NOD32 TRIAL version and I did scans pretty much daily. So I formatted my computer and reinstalled windows, This time I installed Kaspersky Internet Security (Yes, I did buy it), to make sure I dont have a virus. And after 1 day I turned my computer off for the night and on the next morning I got the same problem again. Im pretty sure its not a virus and my computer isnt so old, I bought it about 1 year AGO. Please help me!

Update:
OK this just happeded: I left my computer running for a few hours while its stuck at "Starting Windows" and it suddenly stated a disk check. The disk check failed, im not sure what was the error because it diappeared a few minutes later and a black screen appeared. Ofcourse Im now stuck at that black screen... Can anyone help me please? The symptoms you descibe, and ESPECIALLY this...

The disk check failed

... make me think that the hard drive containing the operating system has either failed or is in the process of doing so. All things considered, you should probably take it to a repair shop, unless you know somebody good at hardware stuff.

Thanks, I shall send it for repairs in a couple of days. If anyone has an easier/cheaper solution please tell me.I restarted my computer and this time after being stuck for a few hours on "Starting Windows" as usual, it began deleting index ENTRIES

deleting index entries

The deleting index entries message is from the Windows disk checking program, CHKDISK, which runs automatically at startup if a disk error flag has been set previously.

Both these things point to a damaged or faulty hard drive. I suppose you might have faulty RAM which is leading to file corruption but my money's on the HDD.

You could try praying, or maybe a magic spell... Or buy a new hard drive of a suitable type and fit it yourself.
Thanks, everyone.I solved it, the problem was connected to over-heating and a bunch of dust. Now this is a cheap solution... Though my computers still SEEMS to be abit strugling i would love getting an advise about lowering the power usage.Try a HD diagnostic. http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 Using the type you download and burn to CD are the best for running on the HD you have your operating system installed on.

If the Long/Extended test comes up OK then you can fairly confidently rule out a bad HD.

Also, it sounds like chkdsk may have never successfully completed. You could try running that again. Computer>right-click the C: drive and go with just the first box checked. Let it reboot and perform the test. If it checks out OK go back and do it again but check both boxes and see if it completes successfully.Problems again...
My computer worked perfectly for a few days but then i suddenly got the blue screen of death. Now when i try to turn on my computer it just says "A disk reading error hac occured, press Ctrl-Alt-Del to restart" or something familiar and the operating system wont load. Im going to try to format again unless anyone knows what to do and has a better idea.
Just replace the hard drive.

Solve : Checkdisk?

Answer»

Checkdisk comes up every time I boot up my computer even after it's been run. Any way I can turn this feature off? That's autocheck, and it's running because it has detected a dirty bit. Unfortunately, it does not run with the repair switch, so it serves no purpose (don't ask).

Right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r (then PRESS ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.
chkdsk /f is enough for most purposes, unless one is having severe hard drive problems.

particularly since the only reason you would ever want to run /r (it's for Recover, Not "Repair") is if you suspect bad sectors, in which case you either waste 2-5 hours determining that- no, you don't have bad sectors, or you find that you do have bad sectors and should replace the drive. /f on the other hand fixes the file system errors that prompt the message in question. interestingly the default chkdsk that runs in this case with XP and later uses the /f switch by default.

/r should only be used if one is having serious issues with a drive- refusal to boot, strange noises, files that take a long time to access, hang or even reboot the entire PC when accessed or give a bluescreen in NTFS.SYS. Using /R in any other circumstance is just a gigantic waste of time. The only real checks that would need to be done would be those that are performed by /f (fix) which involves security descriptors, File Records, indexes, checking for recursive hard-links in directory trees (which can hang badly written programs).

/R MERELY adds an additional (and overly long and arduous) phase to a set of checks that are already performed. without /f or /r, chkdsk runs in read-only mode, where it will tell you about file system errors but will not open the volume for writing and thus will not open them. This Serves a purpose quite plainly since opening a entire volume for write access requires that all handles to that volume be invalidated (force closed) and the volume essentially being "dismounted" from the system. Since not all people will have the PRIVILEGES (user account wise) nor the desire to do so, running without switches can be used to determine if a more thorough check needs to be done. the boot-time autochk does open the volume for writing and fix errors, though.

Autochk and Chkdsk are functionally identical.

Whatever the case, chkdsk always runs through at least 3 phases. In The first phase Chkdsk states that it is "verifying files" and counts a percentage completion. During this time, it examines each File Record segment in the Master File Table. All files and folders/Directories on an NTFS volume are uniquely identified by a FRS in the MFT, and the percent completion that is displayed during this phase is the percentage of those records that have been verified. Verification of each record entails chkdsk examining each FRS for internal consistency and builds two bitmaps- one representing those FRS's in use, and the other representing what clusters on a volume are currently in use. When chkdsk is finished with this phase, it now knows what space is in use and what space is available both within the MFT and on the volume itself. NTFS keeps track of this information in bitmaps of it's own that are stored on the disk; chkdsk compares what it has determined to be true and what the on-disk bitmap metadata says and corrects any issues it finds in the on-disk bitmap (of course it merely reports the discrepancy without /f). Issues of this sort are in cases such as if an FRS that had been in use is found to be corrupted, the disk clusters formerly associated with that FRS will end up being marked as available in CHKDSK's bitmap, but "in-use" according to the on-disk bitmap that NTFS maintains.

It's task still only just begun, Chkdsk displays that it is now "verifying indexes" and repeats the 0 through 100% progress. During this phase, it examines each of the indexes stores on the volume. An "Index" is essentially an NTFS directory and the percent completion that CHKDSK shows during this time is the percentage of the total number of directories on the volume that have been examined. It Examines each directory(index) on the volume for internal consistency and also makes sure that every file and directory represented by an FRS in the MFT is referenced by at least one directory. Since it's in the neighborhood it also CONFIRMS that the various timestamps and size information associated with the files are up to date in the directory listings for those files. When it completes this phase, CHKDSK has ensured that no "orphaned" files (files that exist on the drive but have no directory and thus are inaccessible) exist and that all the directory listings are for legitimate files. Orphaned files can often be restored to their rightful directory, provided that directory is still around. If the directory that should hold the file no longer exists, CHKDSK will create a directory in the root directory and place the file there (found.000, found.001, found.002, etc anybody?). If directory listings are found that reference FRSs that are no longer in use or that are in use but do not correspond to the file listed in the directory, the directory entry is simply removed.

The third phase verifies security descriptors. I imagine this merely makes sure there are no crazy values or corrupted entries.

All three of these phases take place regardless of the switches passed. /R does not need to be specified to invoke "repairs". /f is required for it to open the volume for writes and make the appropriate changes, otherwise it merely reports what it found.

/R only adds a fourth phase. The surface scan. Basically this simply finds bad sectors in the volume's free space. This is accomplished by chkdsk reading every single sector on the volume to confirm that the sector is usable. Sectors associated with metadata and FRS entries and so forth were read in the natural course of run chkdsk without /R; Sectors associated with user data are read during earlier phases(when convenient) if /R is specified. Either way, when an unreadable sector is located, NTFS with add the cluster containing that sector to it's list of bad clusters and, if the cluster was in use, allocate a new cluster to do the job of the old. If a proper Disk driver is being used, the new cluster is written with data that is recovered from the driver for the associated cluster; otherwise chkdsk just writes a bunch of 0xFF bytes. Note that this is hardly a function that is only unique for chkdsk; NTFS performs this exact same function during the course of normal operation and remaps them in exactly the same fashion; /R should therefore only be used if a volume is suspected of having bad sectors, not just because so many fallacy filled sites ascribe that "it's a good maintenance procedure". Bad sectors don't just appear out of nowhere; disk performance slows down as the disk itself has it's own remapping that is otherwise invisible to the operating system. As the hard disk uses up it's "reserve" space for remapping bad disk areas, only then do disk errors start becoming visible to the operating system, So if a modern drive has a single bad sector detected by /r (or any disk scan utility) you are almost guaranteed that that drive has tens, if not hundreds more that the disk itself had remapped during it's lifetime. Each time the disk itself has to remap some information there will be a perceivable delay- the entire system may even become unresponsive for a few moments. Performing a chkdsk /r at this time will tell you you have "no bad sectors" (after several hours of doing nothing, of course) which is patently false. So aside from being entirely unnecessary the /r switch can also give people with hard drives that are slowly failing a false sense of security that the drive is perfectly fine.

I ran Startup Repair and everything seems to be okay for now.BC: If autocheck continues on every boot the /r switch needs to be run to check for a physical issue and will, more often than not, solve the PROBLEM. Quote from: Allan on March 10, 2011, 05:48:49 AM

BC: If autocheck continues on every boot the /r switch needs to be run to check for a physical issue
No. It merely means that the dirty bit is set on the volume. chkdsk /f clears it, and it does so without wasting 2-3 hours for absolutely no reason.

You're not following me. If the dirty bit is set and autocheck runs (as it does with the /f switch) and continues to run on every boot, then there is also the likelihood of a physical issue with the /r switch will address. I've seen this happen dozens of times.

Firstly, I would recommend running a VIRUS scan, just to make sure that there's nothing infecting your machine. Following that, I would ALSO see if a system restore (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/products/features/system-restore) would bring your machine back to the capacity that you're used to it working at. At the very least, you can try to rule out that it's a software issue if it keeps happening.

Solve : Xbox not finding PC?

Hi all,
I'm really in a pickle!
My PC is running Vista Home premium, 32bit operating system.

I have spent the past 7 days trolling this great site and OTHERS for answers, but even though there is some great help, it doesn't seen to help me

Here's my problem

I have been streaming music, films & pic's to my xbox for over 2yrs. about a week ago this all stopped. The computer sees the xbox but not the other way ROUND...
I have tried everything from firewall to turning the reg' items to automatic. The xbox & PC are wired through same modem. Tried installing Tversity, but this also struggled to stay CONNECTED and find the sharing files. Also the basic bits i KNOW how to: ie: allow xbox in media sharing box, restart modem and the like. know theres no problem with the wires as i can still log into xbox live and use PC at same time.

What I have noticed is this: In the network place where it says view computer and devises, there is a devise missing. Its the media ONE (i cant explain it better then that). It was there when i installed Tversity, but now I uninstalled this its gone again. this was/is important i feel

Any other info needed please ask any ideas to help please that would be great

The enabling ''all program'' not works for me...

one way to add programs to start menu ... click on the program's icon (doesn't matter if it's already a shortcut or it's the actual program EXE itself), and click pin to start menu and you'll have it there. See sample screenshot below if you need help

at the end of the day, I need to add the deleted program 1 by 1. There's no shortcut to browse all program in once..

I chose never for everything in the power settings. I don't think its a power issue seems more like a driver or software issue but i have no CONFLICTS in device manager.

I built it myself probably only a little over a year old. Thermal issue i feel isn't a problem it's water cooled but no leaks thankfully. I went ahead and unplugged a few things and received no change in behavior. It just sleeps and then i lose the ability to use my keyboard. Even to select to start windows normally at boot the enter key doesn't work.
I went poking through my device manager and noticed that i have two keyboard drivers running simultaneously. Is this normal? It started working again. I guess I'll see how long it LASTS. Solve : How do I use internet connection sharing in windows 7?

Answer»

I have a LAPTOP running windows 7 ultimate that has wireless internet access. I want to share this internet access with a desktop (also running window 7 ultimate) that does not have a wireless adapter. What I did so far is: on the laptop, I went to network and sharing center, change adapter settings, highlight the wireless adapter icon and the LAN icon and then right click one of them and say bridge CONNECTIONS. I then CONNECTED the laptop to the desktop via an ethernet CABLE but the desktop doesnt have internet access still. What am I doing wrong
U did or did not bridge the connections ?I clicked on bridge connections, but that DIDNT work. I found out that the problem was that I was using a straight through ethernet cable and not a crossover. Anyway I made a crosover cable and connected the two computers, and used internet connection sharing, and all is well now, it works

By the way, what is the difference between network bridging and Internet connection sharing

Solve : Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit.?

I have Windows Ultimate 7 64 bit. I've been told that I can run 32-bit on it (most of my programs are 32 bit). But most of my programs won't even install. Is there some work-around?"Most of my programs" is most annoyingly vague. We don't know what "your programs" are. Maybe if you told us (exactly) which programs "won't even install" and how you are TRING to install them we might be able to help you. Solve : After uninstalling Steam, some Windows 7 control panel not accessible?

Answer»

My laptop: Gateway NV53A, WINDOWS 7 64bit, 4GB RAM (3.74 Usable)

Last Thursday, my computer slowed down to halt and would not do basic things LIKE open the start menu or even perform a right click on the desk top screen. Multiple times, I had to hold the power button down to turn it off and with past experiences from my last laptop I know this can corrupt your hard drive. Eventually a friend who lives across the hall from me (I'm currently in college) was able to get my Norton antivirus open and after scanning more than 1 million files in the full scan, Norton found no virus or problems. My friend and I believed that the computer was slow because there were too many processes opening and after checking the tasklist we found that Steam. *32 exe and oovoo *32.exe were taking up too much memory. I couldn't defragment the computer until the next morning because it took a whole night just to open the disk defragmenter but after defragmenting the computer was fine.

On Saturday, the computer once again slowed down to a halt and this time I got the blue screen of death. After rebooting I somehow found that Steam *32.exe was using the most memory and oovoo *32.exe was using the third most after explorer.exe. I somehow uninstalled oovoo and went online and found that the only way to truly get rid of Steam was to go into the registry and delete the Valve folders there. However after doing this, some things have gone missing on my laptop.

- USUALLY when I press any of the volume buttons, a indicator would show up on the screen showing the volume levels but now that doesnt show up

-The control panel is completely blank

-Every now and then the computer will slow down

-Some svchost.exe services are taking more than 100,000k of memory and I'm not sure if I can stop them.

Please help me fix my laptop, I only got it right before classes started last fall. I don't want to have to use the recovery cds because I have a few programs that would very difficult to acquire again. i think thats one of the only options, have you tried system restore and repair system?

Solve : Mouse and Keyboard problems.?

One of my USB ports broke and shorted my computer a while ago, but I got my computer to turn on and it didn't show any problems. But my mouse isn't working half the time and I just had to restart my computer because the keyboard wasn't working. But I'm not sure if it's connected to the short or not. I have started using a WIRELESS mouse and as long as that is connected the mouse on my computer works. Any advice? And I would just go have it looked at, but I don't have the MONEY right now.Nice paragraph...
Get a new mouse...It's a LAPTOP. And it's not the wireless mouse that doesn't work, it's the mouse that is built into my laptop.I THINK you mean touchpad not working too...

any advice?
Any help would be much appreciatedDoes it have a warranty? check if you can return it, it might be a hardware issue, have you DONE anything recently that could cause this? sometimes this will happen to COMPUTERS that have bad hardware when being made (Example i bought an MSI Wind net-book and the first time i TURNED it on it froze, i RESTARTED it and couldn't start assuming it was a hardware issue returned it and got an ACER ASPIRE 5517 and had no problems)

Solve : 6 gb of Ram Installed but Windows 7 x 64 says only 3.25 are usable????

Answer»

Hello and I hope I am asking in the right place!!

I built my PC several years back. It has an Intel D945PSN board with an Intel Pentium D processor. The board supports up to 4 gigs memory in a 32 bit system and supposedly more with a 64 bit. I recently upgraded my hard drive to a 500 GB sata drive and added a sparkle hd video card with 1 GB memory on it. I was running 2 gigs of ram when I was running XP pro. I purchased and installed Windows 7 pro and decided to upgrade my memory. I had 2 one GB sticks installed one in each dimm in the same channel. I added two 2 GB sticks, one in each of the dimms in the second channel. When I go to system info it says that there are 6 GB of memory but only 3.25 usable. My bios is also picking up the full 6 GB.

Does anyone know why this is or what I can do to fix it?? THANKS in advance for any help!! Quote from: turinj5677 on March 12, 2011, 10:26:26 AM

Does anyone know why this is or what I can do to fix it?

According to Intel, the maximum amount of RAM supported by the Intel D945PSN motherboard is 4 GB whatever OS you install. Both Intel and all the 3rd party memory upgrade suppliers I went to agree on this. I don't know where you got the idea that this could be changed by using a 64 bit OS. Even if the 6 GB is "seen" it seems you can only use 4 GB of it. You can't do anything to fix it.

System Memory Features
The board has four DIMM sockets and support the following memory features:

* 1.8 V (only) DDR2 SDRAM DIMMs with gold-plated contacts
* Unbuffered, single-sided or double-sided DIMMs with the following restriction: Double-sided DIMMs with x16 organization are not supported.
* 4 GB maximum total system memory

Either check that you definitely have 64-bit windows 7 installed or check your manufacturer motherboard. Also check for up to date bios updates on your manufacturer website as these can increase your ram usages. alternatively if you cant upgrade, you can use the full 4gb ram no matter whether 32 or 64bit by following these instructions: http://www.pallab.net/2009/12/30/enable-more-than-4gb-memory-in-windows-vista-7/Yeah because kernel patching is always a good idea.

Don't people realize that the 32-bit limit in windows is artificial? It's there for a reason, too- 32-bit drivers often aren't written in a manner that allows them to access addresses outside of 4GB; that is, while the 32-bit architecture does allow for the use of memory above 4GB, if you're drivers are going to be BLUE SCREENING it's not EXACTLY that good an advantage.

I still love it though- Hey, I'm using a 32-bit OS, I have 4GB or more of memory, INSTEAD of doing the sane thing and using a 64-bit version of windows to run on my obviously 64-bit computer, I'll hack around with kernel mode drivers using hex patches, it's so fail-proof! Nothing can go wrong!

None of that of course matters because

A:) they have a 64-bit OS
B:) the limitation is the Motherboard

Solve : Restore Point from .bat file??

Answer»

Under Windows 7 HOME Premium 64-bit, does anyone know if it's possible to create a restore point from a batch file? I run the same batch file at least once a day and would be very convenient to create a retore point at the same time.

Thanks in advance!
You'll need a VBScript to do the heavy LIFTING, but you can use a batch file wrapper if needed:

Code: [Select]Set sr = GetObject("winmgmts:\\.\root\default:Systemrestore")
If (sr.CreateRestorePoint("My Daily Restore Point", 0, 100)) <> 0 Then
MsgBox "My Daily Restore Point FAILED!"
End If

Save the script with a VBS extension. It can be run at the COMMAND LINE or from a separate batch file using this notation:

cscript scriptname.vbs

You may have to insert path information for the script location.

Good luck.

Solve : Registry Problem HELP!?

Answer»

I downloaded Microsoft Visual C++ Express. When I tried to create a new project it gave me an error saying that the project creation failed.

Somehow after a bit of looking for SOLUTIONS I was suggested to do this
http://www.brianpeek.com/blog/archiv...try-issue.aspx

At first my window looked like the second picture considered to be the "problem".

I changed it to match the first picture.

Now I can't open anything. When I try to open something I get this error: C/Windows/system32/CompMgmt.msc
"This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel".
(The only way I had firefox opened, was it was up when I changed all the permissions)

I tried opening Run to go back and change it to what it was orignally, but I can't even open that.

I'm running Windows Vista 32 Bit.

Save meI have no idea what you did and the link you POSTED goes nowhere, but try system restore to go back to before you messed up the works. This LOOKS like the full link http://www.brianpeek.com/blog/archive/2007/11/29/weird-vista-registry-issue.aspx

I agree with Allan that System Restore is the easiest solution to repair the registry. If you can't run System Restore from within Vista do you have a Vista installation disc?

Solve : Monitor has an orange color?

Answer»

Hello -
I am running Vista Home Basic 32 bit. My computor and monitor is about 3 years old. When I log on the name Microsoft with a bar that has moving marks comes up. This has an orange or red tint to it. Before it has always been white. If I leave the computer on and am gone for a while and come back and move the monse the screen will come up with an orange tint. This tint will fade away with 1 minute. I have changed the background color but that has no effect. Does this mean that the monitor is going bad and I will have to buy a new monitor? Does it mean ANYTHING? I have kept all my security up to date and run them every week or so. As far as I can tell everything works fine. Thanks for any suggestions. Bob Why not just borrow one to make sure its EITHER one, monitor or PC component is faulty? Just for testing.jason2074 -

Why not just borrow one to make sure its either one, monitor or PC component is faulty? Just for testing.

It sounds like your CRT monitor is shot, in other words it needs replacing. I would suggest an LCD display. That is the norm for the folk the work with computers.

If you need help with that then please let us know.

Mulreay -
Thanks for your reply. My neighbor is gone for 10 days. When she gets back I think I can use her monitor to help check the problem. The orange tint has not reached the problem stage yet but I am concerned that it might. By the time that the background picture comes up everything appears normal. BobMulreay -
The orange tint seems to be increasing in intensity and duration. Makes me wonder if I am going to lose my monitor without any more warning. Will you explain what you mean when you say I should get a LCD display. I need to be parpared. Thanks Bob Quote from: Bobh on February 19, 2011, 04:24:28 AM

This is a "CRT" (Cathode Ray Tube) monitor.

This is an "LCD" (Liquid Crystal Display) monitor.

Which type do you have?

Salmon Trout -
Thanks for your reply. I have an E Machine flat panel Monitor, which is an LCD. HOWEVER, I have solved my problem!! While checking the user guide I found out that there were 5 buttons on the side of the monitor. These buttons control the color and other operations. Apparently some time I accidentally pressed one of the bottons and changed the tint of the screen. When I read the directions I corrected the problem. I apologize for taking up your time. Consider the problem corrected. Thanks Bob Glad to hear you got the problem sorted Thanks also to Mulreay and Jason 2047. BobQuote from: Bobh on February 19, 2011, 07:30:24 AM

No need to apologize - glad to know you're OK now.
Hi -
Note that my first question was Feb. 16. Since then I have discovered that I did not solve the problem. I have tried a couple of things which did not help. At Jason 2074's suggestion today I took my monitor to my friends house and plugged it into his computor. When I turned it on the orange tint was still there. As usual the orange tint faded to the normal color after a minute or two. He suggested that what controls the balance of color might be weak and gets normal as it heats up. I suppose that over time the control will get weaker and will fail and I will need to buy a new monitor. Does this sound reasonable? At the present the problem is not a big one but I would like to be prepared. Thanks Bob Quote
Does this sound reasonable? At the present the problem is not a big one but I would like to be prepared
Yes and start on investing for a better monitor sooner and in the meantime while it is still usable. This is an LCD monitor. The image is formed by shining light from a "backlight" through the LCD panel. It is common for the backlight to TAKE a small amount of time to reach full stable brightness; a second or two. Seems like yours may be a bit sluggish. Like a COMPACT fluorescent bulb (similar technology). If it settles down after a minute I would not worry too much. If it starts to go pink that is a sign the backlight is failing. They can be REPLACED.

Do you mean a heavy orange tint, or just a slight warm effect, like when you change the color temperature towards "warm"?

Jason 2074 -
Thank you for your reply. I think you have the answer I was looking for. I will just keep on using what I have but stay prepared to get a new monitor.
Salmon Trout _
Thanks for your reply. I guess you could say what I get is just a slight warm effect. As I said I will just watch for more developments. At least I know the problem is the monitor and not the computer.
Thanks for your time. Bob

Also sometimes when I open a new window and try to max the size, it disappears. I can't even pull it up from the bottom, where it shows your open WINDOWS. I have to type in the address to get it up. Any suggetions? What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?A friend did something to find if there were any virus. I'm not sure the name of the program she down loaded, but for several days it would pop up reading my trial period is over. Then they were wanting me to pay to keep it. Do you think that might be the problem? By the way, I have a HP with windows vista.tamfronmtn,

have you been having the problem before your friend loaded that new program to your computer?

Is this guy still a friend ? ?
This is a new problem it started after he ran the clean-up program. The name is something like Avast. How do i remove it if I can't open control panel? please download CCleaner. Then try using the uninstaller part of the progam to see if it can uninstall programs for you. Should be similar to add/remove panel of control panel, but see this link direct from the ccleaner's official website for instructions on doing it.

OP said the following in one of the previous replies to this thread:

Was wondering if ccleaner's uninstaller panel is able to uninstall the program that the OP would like to remove (The Avast thing). It SEEMS control panel doesn't like the OP, so HOPEFULLY this may help.

However, if you got better ideas potentially more useful to OP, go for it
I see. Well, I'm not sure that's going to help with the problem, but now I understand why you suggested it
For uninstalling programs the preferred app is Revo Uninstaller. But the inability to open Control Panel without the Explorer fault is troubling.

Tammy - what do you mean "a cleanup program"? Avast is an anti virus utility. Did you mean to say that your friend ran a scan with Avast and then the problem appeared? If so, you probably have a malware issue. We can provide instructions for you if that's the case - but we need to know exactly what you are talking about. If that's now what you meant, we need to know what exactly did occur. Thanks. As far as I know, there's an AVAST Antivirus softwware and an AVAST virus cleaner tool.

Anyway ... Allan, I suppose I'll leave the rest of this help session to you, since you seem to have a handle on it.

Solve : Mic input on Toshiba laptop - mono or stereo??

Answer»

Can anybody tell me if the microphone input on a Toshiba laptop is mono or stereo? I want to use it to transfer some old cassettes to cd, but it's no good if it's only a mono input, which I suspect is the case.Read here -> http://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?title=Transferring_tapes_and_records_to_computer_or_CDMost mic ports that I have encountered are Mono, you need an audio input, if you want stereo Check the manual. There MAY be a way to specify stereo input. Which Toshiba? It's a Toshiba Satellite, Windows Vista. There's nothing in the manual about the mic input - at LEAST the printed one which came with the computer.Re: audio input, osmo, I don't have one on my laptop. Can I hook some device up & use the USB input? What should I use?
Maybe the website you have given me will tell me this, jason2074, but I haven't had chance to read it all yet. Thanks for the info tho'.There's an awful lotta different Toshiba Sattelites...I have a Toshiba Satellite 505 S6005. The mike input on the chassis is a mono input, but if you use the plug in adapter I'm pretty sure it will accept a stereo input. If not, you can try looking into a USB mike, with software driver support for a dual channel input.

Hope this helps.Quote
