Solve : BSOD After installing Windows 7 64 bit?

Answer» RECENTLY updated my P5QC w/a Core 2 Quad 9505 Processor. 8 GB of RAM *Patriot* G2 series PC3-10666 DDR3 2x4GB and GTX550 ti Graphics Card.
After upgrading the hardware and 'before' I BEGAN installing the new O/S to recognize the increased RAM I had np at all. As soon as I upgraded to the 64bit version,
BAM! BSOD anytime I try to run any TYPE of games and random freezing. Thought of course it was driver issues, made sure to update all drivers, all Windows7 updates incl SP1.
Made absolutely no difference. Anytime I try to run Rift or WOW it'll work great for a few min, then BAM freeze then BSOD. Also intermittent freezing on various apps etc. Thinking perhaps the HD Audio Drivers that Nvidia automatically installed might be conflicting w/the Onboard Realtek HD Audio? But no way of telling for sure if that's what's causing the BSOD.

Solve : Windows 7 is now not genuine..?

Answer»

Hello there all,
Basically, I installed Ubuntu by creating a new partition. All did not go well and my LAPTOP shut down halfway through installation.
This lead to my MBR becoming corrupt. Since my Windows 7 Home Premium disk image (completely legal, I get them free through my Uni/MSDN) I couldn't repair it. So I got a friends but it turns out that his was a Windows 7 Ultimate.
Now Windows keeps telling my my copy isnt legit, but it completely is. Ive tried reentering my CD Key on the activation screen but obviously because I repaired with Ultimate, and mine is Home Premium it isnt having any of this.
I could attempt a repair MBR with my Windows copy, now I can get onto my Windows DRIVE, but then id lose my new Ubuntu.
Anyone have any ideas please?!
Thank you

Chris

You seem to have contradicted yourself. First, you imply that the Ubuntu installation was not successful, then you say you don't want to lose your new Ubuntu. I'm confused. Well im an IT student studying Digital Forensics so I wanted to try and fix it myself rather then taking the easy optionAnd, what is the "easy option"?Soy, if your insinuating that im making up an excuse to cover up that im using an 'illegal version' of Windows then thats your shout, but im not.

Anyway, Patio. I used the Microsoft Live Chat feature today and gave them my serial code off the MSDN website (it was exact as I copy and pasted it) and he said that that wasnt the right key for Windows 7 Home Premium. Which it is as Ive used it for the past 6 months.
Think im just gonna bite the bullet and do a fresh install of the whole system.

Nope, I was not insinuating that. I was just asking for CLARIFICATION. By "easy option", did you mean repair the MBR, edit the Linux GRUB bootloader, reinstall Linux to see whether that would resolve this, do a fresh install of the whole system as you mentioned, or what?

Solve : Computer trouble!?

Answer»

Hey guys.
Would anyone be able to tell me what's wrong with ny computer?
It COMES up with a blue screen and the following message:
STOP: c000021a {fatal system error}
The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000034 0x0010037c).
The system has been shut down.

Any help on how to fix this? Experts are standing by to help you solve this problem. They know what that error message means. But before they can help you, there are some details they need.
Are you the only one that uses this computer?
What kind is it?
Make? Model? How old is it?
When did it start doing this?
Is it RUNNING Windows 7 ?
If you turn off the power, wait ten minutes and then turn it back on, - Then what happens? Same message?

Yes I am the only one who uses this computer, and the computer is a Dell inspiron 1545 with windows vista.
I got this back in august 09, and this has been happening for the past 3 months.
I'm not sure WHETHER windows 7 is running, and when I turn it on it comes up with ' windows has failed to start... ' and only gives me the option of safe mode and start windows normally. Starting windows normally brings me to a black screen and starting up in safe mode brings me to the blue screen. I can't actually get into the computer to download anything. Use another PC to download Bluescreenviewer and transfer it to your Dell. Run the exe to scan for DUMP files.
Save and paste the file on your next post. Use safemode.

Solve : better performances?

Answer»

Hi everyone,
I have an HP mini 210-2000 with an Intel Atom CPU N455 @ 1.66GHz , 1666 Mhz, 1 core,
1 GB ram
running W7 starter edition.

I love the little thing if it wasn't that it' s slow and does not like doing too many things at the same time...sometimes even 2 things!

I know it was DESIGNED to be soo... but is there any way to make faster and capable to handle more at the same time?
expanding to 2 GB ram?
going to back the lighter XP?
anything else I don't know that I could do ... and would work?
Thanks a lot.
g.!st you will need to see if that HP will RUN XP....some do not have XP drivers...
As always more RAM is usually a good thing....
Your limitation is the CPU though.I see my CPU...and I assume there not much, if anything at all, I can do about that?
from the performance ?CHART? (that line going up and down to show the actual ram and cpu usage in that specific moment) i normally can see :
about 750 memory and CPU 50 to 70 % ( if i am not using much).

however with a couple of web pages open (google ch.) - skype running - itunes playing a song and a word page on which i work : the same figures stay stable on 950 with an 85 to 95 cpu percentage?

Would you say from these figures that extra Ram will at least make a noticeable difference?
What i would truly love to see is quicker reactions to commands, and also, though not primarely, ability to handle multiple tasks...
thanks.
You guessed right ...those Atom CPU's can't be changed out...
All i do know is more RAM always helps...but don't expect miracles...just overall smoother performance...
What OS is preloaded ? ?
W7 starter
version: 6.1.7600 build 7600

DLoad install and run Startup CPL from Mike Lin...
I believe it runs on starter edition...
Use it to get your running background apps under control...NOTE dont turn anything off if you don't know what it does...
It will place an applet in your Control Panel for future access...It is also worth noting that as to what other softwares(Scanners, Protection softwares) were added and running that made your system slow. I use a Win 7 Starter 1Gb RAM netbook that displayed this symptoms. Removed all Unwanted Trial versions and installed system scanners and used a simple free antivirus, Windows Firewall with MBAM and SAS for a weekly PC check up. Using StartupCPL also helps improves booting system delays.Quote

CPU 50 to 70 %
Something WRONG there....

Download Process Explorer: HTTP://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Unzip ProcessExplorer.zip, and double click on procexp.exe to run the program.
Click on View > Select Colunms.
In addition to already pre-selected options, make sure, the Command Line is selected, and press OK.
Go File>Save As, and save the report as Procexp.txt.

Solve : New $4,000 Computer Crashing and Freezing?

Answer»

Quote from: Salmon Trout on March 12, 2011, 07:27:01 AM

At the risk of making myself appear stupid, I have to confess that there is something here I am not getting. A person has a computer under warranty, and has to pay $150 (one hundred and FIFTY dollars!) to call their warranty support? And then another one hundred and thirty-nine dollars because the first call didn't lead to the problem being solved? Is that right? If so, I'm glad I live in a country with consumer protection laws!

Actually, I was scratching my head about that when I first read it. If I ever dropped 4 grand on a machine that refused to work properly in the way that the OPs is I wouldn't be trying to fix it. As far as I'm concerned, at that point it's the Manufacturer's job to make sure that I'm satisfied. If they want an additional 150 dollars for me to have the "privilege" of that they can take the computer back and give me a refund and I'll find somebody more willing to take on the responsibility of making the customer satisfied that selling a product generally entails. This includes, you know, having warranties that aren't just words.

Er no I only had to pay $139 and that was for a service outside my warranty where they walk me through how to back up and restore my computer so that all the programs and files are where they are supposed to be. It saves time but I agree its overpriced.

What I am really ticked about is they never called me back yesterday. I will have to deal with them some other time and I am certainly not paying for them to replace my video card, I already paid for a working video card.Quote from: Seekster on March 12, 2011, 11:38:27 AM

I spent another $139.64 just to have a guy walk me through how to partition my harddrive and restore my computer

On my planet that makes $289.64, which, moreover, I would not have spent!

How nice it must be to have piles of spending cash.

I was refering to the same single payment. The first time I just gave a rounded figure and the second time I just gave the whole figure.

I did pay for a working computer but this was a service where they walked me through a partition back up and instant restore. That part worked well and now I have a partion for backups in the future so I can't argue with them on that.Quote from: Seekster on March 12, 2011, 02:41:40 PM

what did the DELL tech support do for you (if anything)? you mentioned that you were gonna talk with them regarding your pc's problems, specifically video card replacement...Quote from: Seekster on March 12, 2011, 08:19:50 PM
The fact that after all that the thing still freezes up randomly.

here's the thing. You paid 4 grand. they should have delivered the machine in working order. Wether they managed to scam you into believing that repartitioning the drives would somehow dissolve your issues is redundant.

Quote

There seems to be a bit of confusion here I think. If I bought a toaster that didn't work, I wouldn't be satisfied if their response to my inquiries was "well, here, let me walk you through setting up the different toast settings". because that is clearly wholly irrelevant to the issue (that the bloody thing doesn't work). Additionally, why did they make you go through all that? Did you ask them to take you through repartitioning your drive? Or did they somehow trick you into thinking it would fix the problem when it should be clear, at least to them, that it would not?

Basically what I'm seeing is somebody essentially being forced to forego their warranty by being sidebarred with irrelevant instructions by incompetent tech support that additionally has the GALL to charge for the irrelevant sidebars. The fact that even after giving them four grand you still have to resort to coming here to fix what appear to be rather major defects in the hardware as it came configured from the factory should be reason enough to give pause.Actually i'm leaning towards ths whole scenario not being what we've been led to believe...
But's thats just me...Quote from: patio on March 13, 2011, 06:55:24 PM

I would have to agree.

If they are are as concerned with their $4k machine as they sound why did they live with the problem for "months" before contacting Dell?

Since this mainly happens to be with games are these legit COPIES of the games, are they cracked, are they modded?

If I spent that much on a computer and it had this problem right out of the box I wouldn't wait so long to get in touch with the vendor. The problem was subtle at first and yes these are all legit copies. Really the whole problem is at worst a notable annoyance. Plus I spent the last few years in an abusive relationship with a bootcamped MacBook Pro that took an average of 30 minutes to start up Windows XP for some strange reason so I guess I am just used to stuff not working.

In any case Dell did not call me back like they said they would and I have really had it with their tech support. The good news is that I am now almost certain the video card is the main problem. The other day I encountered a variation of the sound freeze but this time the screen changed to several lines of small horizontal rectangles of different colors. I have never seen it do that before and it has never done it since but if that doesnt indicate some issue with the video card I don't know what does.

I intend to call up Dell as soon as I have a free day to waste on hold with them (so probably this weekend) and ask them politely to replace my video card. I will NOT pay for the video card. The main reason I am not raising a fuss about paying for the partion and restore was because I was dumb enough to pay them for it anyway (at least I didn't spend $250 for a year long plan like they wanted me to). Moral of the tale, as of so many others like it ---

Wondering if it would be better to contact the manufacturer of your graphics card if it's still got warranty attached to it, instead of going thru Dell. That is if you're certain that your graphics card is not working right and needs to be switched out.It could be a video card incompatibility problem too or perhaps you don't have an ideal video card for the games you're running. Also, have you updated Windows 7? When I bought my gaming system I had problems DOWNLOADING the Window 7 updates until I found out the update service was missing from my machine. Make sure your system is updating properly and get service pack 1 installed too.

Solve : Computer Freezes Randomly For No Reason?

Answer»

Hey guys,

I have a newer asus g73jh. The specs are:
Intel Core i7 Q720 1.3ghz
6GB DDR3 1033mhz ram
ATI mobility radeon 5870 HD
Windows 7 Home Premium

Now this problem occurs randomly and not always when I"m even using the pc. It will just be idle doing nothing and just totally lock up and can only be resolved by holding the power button. When it does happen when I'm doing something though, the sound FREEZES and sticks in a loop where the sound was at. Also, sometimes I wake up in the morning and it's at a black screen with words at the top that say something along the lines of "set the correct bootup device and restart" or something like that which makes no sense considering I have the only hard drive configured to boot. All of my drivers are up to date, I have AVG and run it consistently, I run ccleaner and clear the registry twice a week. Nothing malicious on my pc. Another thing to note, when the thing does freeze, the hard drive light stops blinking completely. Any help on this issue would be appreciated.1. Use safemode to check on driver or software issue.
2. Try running chkdsk or diagnose HD via manufacturer's diagnostic tool.
3. Monitor Hardware temps for any possible overheat and revert overclocking options(if any) to default.
4. Minimize or swap RAM usage to test on the issue.
5. Disable powersaving mode or options(Hibernate or Sleep)
6. Try removing screensaver to NONE when idling.Quote from: apple266 on March 14, 2011, 09:38:20 AM

First of all, NEVER use any registry CLEANERS. They cause problems, they do not cure them. There is no such thing as a good registry cleaner.

Second, drivers should only be updated if there is a specific need to do so. And then, all drivers should be obtained from the OEM websites, not from Windows Update.

At this point I suggest the following:

1) Right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.

2) To check the ram, download memtest (http://www.memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make SURE the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

3) Boot to your Windows disc and run startup repair options

Let's see where we are after that.

Solve : I get an error The system cannot find the file specified 0x8007002?

Answer»

I went and did an System backup on my Windows 7, and when it was DONE, it said Backup encountered a problem while backing up c:\Ringtones.
Error: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)
I once created a folder called Ringtones, i DELETED it and now it is not even in my c:\ hard drive.
But the Windows backup says it cannot find it. Is it somehow still in the Windows Registry? Can anyone help me
What backup program are you using?

Have you done a search for the folder ring tones? I know you deleted it but maybe you had another one? Have you done a full VIRUSE sweep?

I done a virus sweep and all is clear, i also did a search of folder Ringtones and no luck EITHER, I'm using Windows Backup and Restore that came with Windows 7You can give this a shot.....

Solve : External Hard Drive - Filename- mft table (i guess) weird problem!?

Answer»

First,
I don't even know it's a windows problem...

Know, let me explain what i did first,
I have an external hard drive, and 5 volumes in it. my music volume was full, so i downloaded paragon hard disk manager and tried to expand music volume - by shrinking game volume -
and when this action going on electric power gone off...
So when i started my computer and hard drive and paragon to resume action, paragon stucked! it was telling me it's resuming the action but it didn't
so all of my hard drive was unseen by windows and my all data -500gb- was unreachable..
I look around internet and found TestDisk software...
And i erased all my partition table, then used TestDisk partition search, and write it back.
It was cool. My songs and other volumes BECOME visible.
BUT then i discovered something wrong.
Some of my songs filenames and actual files are mixed.
I mean when i try to play song A from artist B it plays Song C from artist freaking Z...
It's TOTALLY WEIRD. Also some of my files are playing like they are on scracthed cd... with jumps and etc.

So i tried scandisk from windows... it sad found some problems and fixed them. but still lots of songs aren't right, filenames and files are totally mixed...

Are there any way to fix this?

-sorry for my language. i hope i explained it clearly. if not please ask me for more info- what you need to know- i will monitor this thread.

thank you...The lesson you should have learned here is that you should have appropriate backups of ALL data on a disk when you DECIDE to gp futzing about with it's partitions.
The only way to fix this btw is to go through all of your music and rename them. Or, you could (I think) use a program like MP3Tag to possibly rename files to their "Title" tag value, assuming that the files' ID3 tags are intact.Quote

and when this action going on electric power gone off...
Did you think this did not matter?

Too late now.. You should have got one of these...

Solve : Mouse Key Problems?

Answer»

If you turn off mouse keys and use the number pad to type numbers, do you get two numbers PER press?Hmm, an interesting thought, but I just tried it and I get single digits. I pressed the keys pretty firmly too. This is using relatively high repeat DELAY and acceleration.

Great forum!!! Thanks for the information guys. Now I know what to do when I encounter things like this.I have this exact same dilemma. However, I have solved it by creating a separate user on my computer (non-ADMIN). It works fine after that, but I would REALLY like to know what the problem is on my admin user. . .You are responding to an old thread. If you have a question of your own please start a new topic.Personally, I'd complain to the game creator. Even games shouldn't be allowed to get away with the lack of a keyboard interface.... (well, except console games for obvious reasons).

It doesn't immediately solve your problem but if enough people want it they may have "no choice" but to add a working keyboard interface.

In fact, they very well already have one. If you are able to navigate your "inventory" (if that is what it is) using the arrow keys, you might also be able to use the Application key to show the menu. I don't know, though-I think the menu shown would probably be the same menu you get from right-clicking the applet.

Also, this might sound crazy, but you could try an entirely different keyboard. the keyboard you are using could have something wrong with it or the bounce detection IC could have failed (so when you release the key from a "firm" press it registers a second "bounce" press. This would also ignore the keyboard repeat rate and delay settings since to the computer it appears as an entirely separate keypress. I'm more totally guessing, but it is feasible. And if you have an extra keyboard lying around it's free to try.having almost the same issue with my laptops touchpad...it just transfers things so i have to raise my wrist when i type and I can't just PUT my wrist on the sides of the pad...how do i turn it off so that i can just use a separate mouse

Solve : CODE ERROR 5 WIN7?

Answer»

hello

I have been getting this Cannot boot from disk: Code5 error...and apparently it has something to do with the .ISO file extention on the image file. how do i edit it or how i solve this code 5 error thing it had been goin on for days, i have changed up to 5 DVD drives it still doesnt work.
and this disk can boot on other PCs is it my mother board? because i have formatted my HDD on this PC that i have tested with and it booted and worked, and when i put it in my pc it did nt work.

what to do? I am not sure what you did....

Did you format your hard drive and load windows 7? Or did you try to format a DVD and write a copy of windows to it?

Please run down the steps so we can understand what you did to start getting the error code.

Not REALLY: I restarted my pc cause it froze, and i got a msg that: partition boot error...so i thot it was the HDD/MBR
*i ran a checkdisk(s) it didnt work and, so thats when i tried to run win7 Disc to perform some diagonistics and repair...it gave me that CODE 5 Error when the cd booted.
* So I wrote a new Win7 image into a clean DVD..and it booted in a pc that i was copying it from (pc1). But then when i used it in my PC (pc2) it gave me the same error as before.
* i decided to backup and format. I then formatted in pc1 to test what will happen, it formatted just fine i let it load and finish, and win7 was running perfectly fine. But then i took my HDD to plug it in pc2, nothing happend it needed a repair again. (i think it was different specs and configuration on pc2) Ja i just kinda gave up from there.

hope this was helpful. What file are you creating these Win7 images from ? ?hi

its .ISO file, its an image thts on our server, it is SAVED there. (ready to be written.lol)
and i tried to change it, i just cant get RIGHT the text and option. i used nero7 to write it.From Microsoft ? ?no our local server, at work. (sorry)He's asking if you have obtained that .ISO file from Microsoft. No we didnt, it was created internally. As i thought...

There's the source of your issues...My guess would be that your missing the boot-strapper that is on the original disk.I agree...try to get a real copy of windows 7 and load the machine from scratch.

Also you can't make an image of PC1 and then move the hard drive to another machine. Windows will error out and not run.

From this webpage, you can download official win 7 setup FILES from digitalriver.

This assumes you have the legal keys for windows 7 already, and the links seem to be working as ot now.Quote from: Spoiler on March 25, 2011, 11:59:16 AM

Thank you very much i tried with the real copy, but it was after i REINSTALLED XP SP3 and i later migrated to Win7 through windows (without booting with a cd ) and its working perfectly fine.

thank you all for the input and advice.

Solve : Please help. hard to explain here. (windows 7)?

Answer»

I will try and get as much detail as i can as this might somehow be of any help.

first off, i have had my cpu and graphics card overclocked for about a month now, and so far there has been no trouble/spikes etc.

I was playing dragon age 2, i minimized it, went for a walk with my dog (35 minutes) and when i came back i moved the mouse only for about 1 second and then my computer freeze'd. Then i pressed the "turn on button" and it shut down. then i started it again and i had bluescreen, and not only one. each time i tried to restart the computer i had different kinds of bluescreens, first i had something memory related, then something completely different, then page fault in non paged area, then the page fault again and then i tried to do the "recover and repair startup errors but it crashed halfway through. i then tried to restart my pc again and it actually BOOTED, except for the fact that when i pressed the start button it was only white (freezing) i did ctrl + alt + del and stopped the explorer.exe and then restartet it, but it wouldnt restart. so i restarted the computer and now i just can't see the icons in my little taskbar down in the right corner.

my guess is that when my pc froze it accidentally messed up some crucial windows files, but then again, I am no expert when it comes to errors/troubleshooting

I really hope you can help me out here. my system recovery doesn't work anymore (god KNOWS why).

Solve : My PC won't start up?

Answer»

I have a windows vista home premium package on my dell desktop. Since loading a windows update my computer will not start up properly. It gets to the screen with the option to either start windows repair or start windows normally. The first option can not repair the proble and the SECOND option does not get to the windows start up screen before re booting.

I have tried doing a system restore but am only given one restore date that will not cover the hard drive and therefore fails. I have tried starting in safe mode but again it crashes and re starts.

Can any one help or suggest what the problem may be?

ThanksYes you have a problem. Let's see if we can help you.

First, Find your windows vista cd. We are going to PUT it in and boot off of it. We are going to go past the boot or repair screen and it should come to the second boot or repair screen. Here it will display your windows INSTALL. At that point you select the windows directory DISPLAYED, usually 1 and hit enter. It may ask if you want to do a clean install or a repair again, select the repair and it will examine the install and then delete the /windows/system directory files and reinstall them. Then it will reboot. I FORGET if it does it once or twice.

Second, if the first isn't correct it's close. Don't click to re-format the drive or you will loose everything, but you'll have a freshly installed system. HA! Good luck.

Solve : Laptop CD Rom?

Answer»

My laptop is not completing reading the CD Rom drive. Under 'My computer' it does not show a CD/DVD drive, however, when I look at Device Manager, it shows DVD/CD-ROM drives, sub Slimtype DVD A DSBA 1H ATA Device but the icon on the left shows an exclamation point inside a yellow triangle.

Under Network adapters it shows Microsoft ISATAP adpter #2, ALSO with the exclamation point in a yellow triangle.

What is happening and how do I fix it?What is new or different since the last TIME everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, ERROR, etc)?jut downloaded Norton UPGRADE and it was done remote by Norton.

I looked on the internet to see if I needed to update the DRIVERS and it says, all drivers are already updated.

Thanks for your response. I hope you or someone can help me. WendyI would uninstall the Norton's and not connect to the internet for this test. Then see if you can read the cd. If not then open device manager and remove the cd rom drive. Then reboot let it be redetected and then try to read a disk. Make sure you remove the cd before you reboot though. Could be the cd is defective.

Solve : Can you access passwords with Vista??

Answer»

I had XP before my COMPUTER died and I could access the passwords and change them if they weren't correct anymore. When I try to do that on Vista, I GET Delete Passwords, I click Yes, a box comes up and asks if I'm sure I want to do that, Yes or No. Since I don't want to delete ALL my passwords, I just click No and when I go to the websites where I had to change my password, I just type the NEW one in, but it gets aggravating to have to do this, ESPECIALLY on websites I use frequently. Can the passwords be changed some other way?

Debby
You'll have to delete the cookie for the website. It's usually named with the websites name. Find it delete it and then go back to the website. SET the password and it shouldn't ask again.

Solve : Windows 7 renaming home space?

Answer»

HI
Ok, we have a network share for all USERS in the college.
So an example would be \\server1\users$\user1
This has been FINE while we have been using windows xp, but we are now testing Windows 7 and I have noticed that peoples homepace has now been changed from \user1 to my documents.
Any ideas.Maybe I don't understand what your trying to say. My Win7 x64 Ultimate user space is under C:\Users\NAME.

If you link your computer to other COMPUTERS it can be used as Public, Private, Work workgroup. Once you connect to the pc you are going to share, and have adapted it's workgroup name, then you can share any directory you want to creat directories for the users connecting. You may have to create indivual accounts on the Windows 7 machine.

Is that helpful?

and I haven't a clue what to do Please help.If it got knocked off, it probably jared something loose. It's better to take to some place LIKE Staples or Office Depot and let them check this out. They usually have a free service to do that. Barring that, have you tried pressing the F8 key on boot up. You have to start pressing it as soon as you press the power button. This should get you a boot up menu. Select Safe Mode. If you can get to a desktop check out Device Manager and see if something has been redlined or yellow exclaimed out. If so that is the likely thing. Looks like the network from your POST. that is a card that in installed on the laptops motherboard usually. The error is either because it got dislodged or because the part of the hard disk it resided on is damaged. If its the latter you need to get it to the manufacturer to have it replaced. If you cracked the motherboard, wo-oh. New laptop in the making. Hope it was under warrantee in any case.
The error given means reseating internal components. RAM module, Network card, CMOS battery, HD, cable connectors/plug. If you are not keen on doing this things, you may want to take it to a known TECHNICIAN to do the job.

Solve : Finding Lost/Deleted Files after Factory Reset?

Answer»

My computer has been acting a little weird lately and I've tried the system restore quite a few times, so a friend SUGGESTED I do a factory reset. So I saved my most important files on Dell Remote Access and Reset my computer. Upon reinstalling Dell Remote Access to my computer my files have mysteriously vanished. I am wondering if there is a low, LOW cost way or an absolutely free (*points to sell* Broke college student!) way to find the files I lost, on my computer somewhere. The ones I need most are just Notepad files of songs I've written out that I have no backups of. They are extremely important to me. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
CaitlinYour DATA is gone after a re-install....sorry.

Unless you want to take it to a data recovery specialist for approx 150 Bucks an hour...U.S. $
I'm wondering if that is true. I've gone to multiple sights where they've said there is a way to get my files back through safe mode, but no one goes into detail on how to do this. When you do a factory reinstall it wipes your computer clean and then INSTALLS a fresh new copy of windows. This process over writes everything on your machine. This also means that anything like your docs and pictures have been written over.

What was on your computer is gone unless you want to pay big money to have a company try to recover little bits and pieces of what maybe left in the free space on your hard drive.

Your data is gone. It's an ex-parrot.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vuW6tQ0218

Don't know anything about Dell Remote Access other than it states it's no longer offered. If you have uploaded to this service, then contact their support. If you check http://www.dellremoteaccess.com/ there is a new alternative. Again, I don't know but possibly this service has taken over DRA and just needs you to install this new software to gain access.

As for lost files and factory reset. There is the possibility to get some information back but the more you use the PC and save data to it the less likely that is.

http://www.active-undelete.com/
http://www.livecd.com/

Youtube will possibly help you use these tools, LiveCD being a good first choice to try and remember download to a friends PC and use the bootable versions as any new data written to your pc may overwrite the stuff you need.

There's also Hiren's BOOTCD if you'd like to look for that.

A factory reset requires partitions (usually) so if you do have partitions you may have C & D drives as well as a hidden restore partition. The Factory Reset will only restore to C leaving D if exists alone.

Anyway, always good to backup to external and incase of text or photos of importance - PRINT

Nah! That Parrot's just sleeping.... if you want a backup solution in the cloud, I'd go with adrive.com[/url. 50 GB of storage space for free users and I think they keep your files like forever. I checked my account recently and something I stuck there almost half a year ago still existed

Solve : Confused about how to partitiion after an install of windows 7?

Answer»

I installed windows 7 home premium 64bit (OEM) onto a new 2TB drive, but I didn't create a new partition during install.

I searched on GOOGLE but to no avail.

How do I partition the drive so that I have one primary partition for the OS that is about 100 GB and the rest of the drive is an extended partition which I will partition into logical drives of various sizes to store data.

Windows disk MANAGEMENT doesn't allow me to do the above. It seems to only shrink the drive into primary partitions.

Any help would be appreciated.I don't know much about Win7, but I was under the impression that it would grow & shrink partitions. But I'll take you at your word. This will SURELY work for you if Win7 won't: http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htmThanks for the link

What if I start over. Am I able to erase the whole disk reformat it and re-install an oem version with no dificulties.

1) You can manage partitions through Disk Management
2) You can use a 3rd party app such as (free) Easeus Partition Manager
3) Yes - if your start from scratch you'll be given the option to delete and create partitions as PART of the install process.

Solve : System Hangups?

Answer»

Hi All,
I have a windows 7 home machine. It keeps hanging up. What I mean is the hard drive will work fine for about 10 mins and then the activity light shows soild and the machine stops working. After about 2 mins everything is back to normal.

Things I have tried....
Full system scan with 3 antivirus programs.
Checked for malware and rootkits
Ran check disk
did a defrag

All of this came back clean or good.

I am wondering if the machine has a bad hard drive (WD10EADS00M2B0) or the data is corupt. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks
1) You do not currently have more than one AV installed, do you? If so, uninstall all but one.
2) What happens in safe mode?
3) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?I only have on AV program on the machine. After I ran one and it showed clean I uninstalled it and did another one because I though it was a virus and didn't believe the first one's scan.

I haven't tried safe mode. I will give it a shot.

Its not my machine so I don't know if they added anything to it as FAR as software. All the hardware is the same as when they bought it.

Looks like this is green drive. It also looks like I am not the only one with problems with it. I did a google and found a bunch of people having trouble with this drive.

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=609&sid=113

I've used wdidle3 to disable parking on WD Green drives that I USE in my Tivo's.

However, you're reporting a steady green light which means activity, not parking. I'm guessing something is running in the background which is why I asked you to try safe mode.I am at work right now. I will be going over my friend's house later today to check it out. I will try safe mode then. Thanks!

I plan on running a check on the drive and see if its bad...

http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=608&sid=3&lang=en

I tried to run the machine in safe mode. It didn't clear the problem. I then download and installed western digital's hard drive tool and ran a check. It passed all tests.

I am going to try to change the cable and also try another sata connection.

Just an update.

I changed the cable and it didn't help with the lockups. I then downloaded and ran the hard drive tool to check the drive. It passed all the tests.

I then changed the power setting so the drive never stops spinning. This seemed to help. I now notice that the drive can go for about 1 hour before it seems to dump a LOT of data that maybe cached.

I checked to be sure that the system is set to let windows manage the memory and it was.

Last night I downloaded and installed SP1 in a hope that it would help. I am still testing it so I am not sure if that did any good.

On a side note, the USER who owns the machine seems to use the switch users alot. I am wondering if the drive maxing out is really windows dumping data from the other open session.

Thanks

Solve : Computer restarts when I try to view a video or use my Sims 3 computer game?

Answer»

My computer, in the last 3 weeks, has become increasingly moody. When I try to watch a video (on a secure, safe, legal site, such as watching a tv show on CWTV.com), or try to use my computer game, The Sims 3, my computer will start to run it and then show the "Blue Screen of Death" (where at the bottom it says its dumping physical memory to disc) before crashing and restarting. I have tried restoring my computer to a time before I was having these problems, but errors have occurred and the restore is never successful. I have disc DEFRAGMENTED my computer, and even turned of my Norton Anti-virus to see if perhaps it was MESSING with my system. I just can't seem to get my computer to run a video, tv show, or my computer games!!! I have also run a scan to see if Norton could FIND anything wrong with my computer! No luck!
I'm trying to avoid doing a faculty restore on my computer, and I have a GUT feeling that wouldn't help with this problem anyway.

My computer/system information:
Windows System Home Basic 2007, Service Pack 2
Dell Inspiron I1420
Intel (r) Core (TM)2 Duo CPU T5250 @ 1.50 GHz
2.50 GB
32-bit Operating System

Also, while it seems un-related, I've also had problems with my Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007. I reloaded it, and re-entered my product key only to find that Word claimed that "selection is locked" While I don't see how this could be related, I figured I'd mention this as well.

I'm completely stuck and very frustrated. It WOULD be GREATLY appreciated if anyone could help me figure out WHY my computer is acting up LIKE this! Occasionally the blue screen does not occur and the screen just goes black and restarts, or locks up forcing ME to restart the computer by pressing the power button.

Thanks for any help!

Solve : Where should I install games on windows 7 ultimate 64??

Answer»

Where should I install my games to on WINDOWS 7 ultimate 64? I ask this question because a friend has told me that I shouldn't install games and NON OS programs in the OS partition. I have normally just installed games and things where windows 7 has decided to install them. My games are installed to C: program files x86, but is this guy right? Should I have them installed somewhere else and where exactly is the OS partition he talks about? Thankyou!!Quote

Installing in the default directory like you are is correct.

The only thing I would not put on the OS partition are files (music, documents, downloads...) or if I do keep them backed up in case they system hic-ups.

Quote

I would not you can install them sometimes they SOFTWARE may not work properly. The OS partition is you C drive where windows is installed. It is up to you really, the only reason that I don't like installing games on the same drive as the OS, is the fact, if you get a virus, or have to re-format, and reinstall windows, you will still have all your games. if you are like me, and have a TON of games, re-installing all of them takes a long time. so if you have it on another hard drive, you will lose your Save games and things, but you will not have to re-install all your games.
Also, I have Steam www.steampowered.com so the thought of downloading over 45gb of game data SEEMS insane

yes and no. Should you wipe windows you loose the referances (where the information is stored.) If you have not noticed we both stated some not all.He has just given me a bit more info on why he wouldn't install games on the OS drive of windows 7 64bit. He reckons that this section of the harddrive is always checking for viruses and malware and that this can give you a performance hit on games by slowing them down and things. @osmo - I have always used a hardrive backup program called Acronis, I would never be without ONE of these backup programs now. This program has save me the hassel of reinstalling everything many a time because it takes the computer back to a time before the problems began. Say I get a virus on my computer, or my windows becomes corrupt, or even if my harddrive dies, all I do is click on my backup file and sit back while my computer installs everything back the way it was.Put the games anywhere you like and stop listening to your friend. Put the games anywhere you like and stop listening to your friend. He has no idea what he's talking about.

Heh... my organization is so unorganized, half the time I have no idea where a given game/program is installed.

Originally, the idea was to put games in D:\games, so I have 88 folders there with different games/source ports/etc. but at the same time I have most "newer" games in the appropriate C:\Program Files folder, since they have both 64 bit and 32-bit editions and I have no idea how they would work if installed elsewhere. This in addition to the fact that Most of my C: was empty at the time.

As for reinstallation, though, I back up absolutely nothing but a few of my programming project folders. I've lost years worth of work that I have yet to "recover" and let me tell you, the inconvenience of having to reinstall a few programs pales in comparison to the prospect of rewriting an entire application.

Also, I have a sort of "redundancy" for older files, since they are also present on the drives from my older computers, in the exact same setup (since I just cloned their contents to whatever my new drive was).

Solve : What is this e-mail??

Answer»

Hello -
For several weeks I have been getting strange e-mails. They have my correct e-mail address and have a different sender. Today it is:
"Dann Roseanne"<[emailprotected] and the message is: 5sw
at the bottom below the reply, etc. there is : select message encoding and full headers
None of this means anything to me. In the past I have not opened these e-mails as I thought they were virus or something bad. However I opened this one today. Does ANYBODY have any idea what these e-mail are? Thank you BobWhat ANTIVIRUS protection are you using? Do you have any anti-spyware tools installed?

I believe one possibility here is that someone you KNOW, who has you in their address book, has a virus in their computer that's causing it to send emails without them knowing this is happening. And, the virus generates the random sender email address. Soybean -
Thanks for your reply. I have Avast antivirus which I run every couple of weeks. I have never found anything. I run Malwarebytes which once in a while deletes an item. I run SuperAntispyware
every week and it finds and deletes several tracking cookies.
Several people I know has my address but are not too smart about computers. What you say about one of them having a virus could easily be right.
Is there anything I can do, besides changing my address, to get rid of these emails? This is not a big thing with me just a bother. Thanks BobYou might send a message to people who you believe have you in their address book and EXPLAIN that you are receiving these strange messages, that you believe they may be coming from someone's computer without the owner's knowledge, due to a virus in their computer, and ask them to install an anti-virus program if they do not have one installed.

Other than that, I don't believe there is much you can do other than, as you said, change your email address. And, that might only be a temporary solution since you do not know exactly whose computer may be generating these messages and future email exchange with them could result in your new address getting retained in their system and in a resumption of these unwanted messages.

If these messages CONTAIN some common element that could be used in a message "rule" or "filter", you could create a rule or filter that sends these messages directly to the trash folder. Soybean -
Thanks - I think I will live with the emails. I don't have any idea who's computer might be infected. I do know some of them use geeks to help them once in a while. Maybe in time they will get their computer cleaned up. Consider this problem solved and thanks again. Bob

Solve : Slow & Jerky Videos on MS 7?

Answer»

My new laptop with Microsoft 7 will not play videos properly either online or downloaded. I am on dial-up, but even videos I have downloaded are not worth watching. The graphics move a few seconds, stop, go again, stop, etc. etc. Do I need Flash or some other driver COMPONENT to correct this? Suggestions welcomed!

Bill.Hi wilmsp,

1. what is model & manufacturer of your new laptop?

2. what is model of your graphics card or graphics chip on your laptop (if you know or can find out)

3. have you install latest drivers for your graphics card or chip?

4. what kind of video are you trying to watch? High Definition video or regular standard quality video? If the graphics are playing back on your laptop as if you're in serious traffic jam MAY mean that your graphics card may not be able to handle it .... don't now know if that's the case, just a thought.

THANKS --- The laptop is a Gateway NV53 which I bought in January. Its 6 bit, has 4 gig ram with 3.75 usable. It is AMD Athlon II Dual Core. I'm sorry and guess I should know, but can't find which drivers I need for my graphics card. I just want to see the occasional news video with reasonable quality. Any further suggestions?

Thanks again.6 BIT ? ? ?Quote from: PATIO on March 18, 2011, 03:28:19 PM

Not surprising if it's "slow and jerky" with only 6 bits under the hood...

Well, we can find out ... see the gateway NV53's specs from Gateway's official website listing here Hey people - I'm really sorry but that was a typo and I failed to proofread before posting. My Gateway laptop is 64 bit! A large oops on my part.

Solve : Windows Media Player 12 freezes after brief use?

Answer»

I'm running a 18 month old HP Pavilion a6750y with AMD Phenom X4 9650 Quad-Core processor 64 bit, 8GB system memory, 750GB HARD drive, ATI Radeon HD3200 GRAPHICS which came with Vista and a FREE upgrade to Windows 7 which I'm now running.
The Windows Media Player 12 has never WORKED properly - it will work after a fresh boot for a few minutes (sometimes longer) but will always eventually freeze, also freezing widows. A reboot will allow it to play again for a short while.
I've run the on-board troubleshooting and get this result: "Configuration settings might be set incorrectly. Detected

Unexpected Windows Media Player behavior might be due to configuration errors."

I've spent much time trying to find an answer at Microsoft's site and many searches to no avail. I have reinstalled the graphics system and drivers, ran Radeon Catalyst Control Center without any solution. I've worked around this with VLC Media Player and SMPlayer but I would prefer to have the windows PROGRAMS working.
Would appreciate any help I can get. Thank You.

Solve : Lag Issues.?

Answer» SPECS: ASUS Desktop PC with Windows 7 Home Premium
Pentium Dual-Core CPU E5400 @ 2.70GHz
6.00GB of RAM
64-bit Operating System

I've been having lag issues with my computer and I'm assuming it's a Windows 7 problem. Every 5 to 10 seconds my computer lags for about half a second. There's buzzing in my speaers when it happens. That whole screen freezes then goes back to normal. It's extrememly annoying espaically while gameing and playing music. At first I thought it was my speakers but I got new ones and they still did it. I think it might be something to do with PROGRAMS because when I have all programs closed and I'm on my desktop screen it either completly stops or it does it every 30ish seconds. Is there any way to fix this? Is this a Windows 7 problem?
I have like 5GB of memory left so it's not anything to do with too much stuff on my computer. I've scanned for viruses mutiple times. I've used the Disk Clea-up and Disk Defragmentor. What is new or different since the last time EVERYTHING worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)? The speakers are new. I tried changing the graphic card once but it didn't work out so I put back the old graphics card but by then it was lagging. I don't think anything else is new since the lag started. And the only difference is the lag really. The computer's only about a year old so not too much as been needed to fix or anything. Haven't had any viruses that I remember or errors. I've DOWNLOADED very few programs (Itunes and a few games). It's just really weird.Download Process Explorer: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
Attach the file to your next reply. Are there any errors in Event Viewer?

Solve : Turning off user account control? Vista Business x64?

Answer»

I'm renaming and moving ~200Gb of photo files on an external hard drive. This is time consuming enough without having to click "Continue" in 2 different access confirmation boxes (1= destination folder access denied) - (2=User Account Control).
Do I really need UAC on? And if not how do I disable it? Is it as simple as 'Control Panel > User Accounts > Turn User Account On or Off > then un-check "Use UAC to Protect Your computer"?

Seems like I remember a procedure a bit more complicated then this to fully disable UAC in Vista that was posted on here a few years ago, (although not reccomended).

I am the administrator on this pc with no other users allowed. I have Comodo firewall and my router is firewalled.
It's set up for power-on password, Windows user password and has fingerprint scanner. I have nobody in my house that would try to access my pc and even if they did/could, I have nothing on here I need hidden.
Do I really need UAC?
Thanks again,
Mike Yes, it's that simple. It's recommended that users do not disable UAC. Having said that, I always disable it. You can also use this simple utility to toggle the settings or, even better, set it to quite mode: http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/1st thing i do after a clean install is disable it...
I don't need MS to protect me from my machine...Thanks guys. I only have 1 confirmation box to tick now. That will help save time on this project.
I'm now not protected from my machine (or is it now not protected from me? lol).

I was wrong. I was thinking about a post in 2009. I searched and found it but it was about Vista hidden administrator account, and for a different purpose. But we'll leave that subject alone here.

I don't need MS to protect me from my machine...

This expresses a common misunderstanding of the underlying purpose of UAC, su/do, and equivalents. They aren't there to protect you from your machine, for one thing, any more then requiring security badges in a confidental military base is to protect the employees from the military base; It's there to protect the employees as well as the base from breeches in security. A person from the opposing side being able to waltz in without presenting ID can cause havoc, just like a software program that is able to run as a superuser merely because you've decided you don't want to be bothered with burdens of command. Can you be a careful user running with such settings? of course you can. Can you remain perfectly safe as a result of said behaviour? of course you can. But you can remain safe while building a wooden bridge across a volcanic crater if you follow the proper precautions, but considering you could simply present your security token to the bouncer and take the path around it's not exactly a logical choice.

Unless of course you are in it for the danger.

I'm fully confident in my abilities to build a wooden bridge over a lava flow...yes.

And the beauty of that approach is if the bridge burns down i won't be on here cryin about my luck or blaming the OS author...When I stated "misunderstanding" before, it was mostly in regards to the comment about being "protected from you're machine"; as I noted, you aren't being protected from you're machine, you're being protected from security flaws in the programs you run. It's not just about the prompts as people like to pretend. The request to elevate that UAC provides is in and of itself only of minor benefit; the major gain is that applications that do not require elevation, aren't running with the highest possible privileges; this is what they do when UAC is disabled, and on the default configurations of XP and earlier. The advantage is that you are running Word, MSN, Internet Explorer, Firefox, IRC clients, Outlook, Adobe Reader, Foxit, etc as a standard user by default; they don't get any special abilities.

Now, the point is that exploits exist for all of these programs. Even Word. if you have UAC disabled and visit a page that exploits a hole in IE or firefox or Opera or whichever and it is able to place a piece of binary code on your machine and execute it to try to install a rootkit, it's going to need admin privileges to run. Without UAC, it already has admin privileges- you get no prompt. But you do get a rootkit. With UAC; you can click cancel. Now, naturally, many people will click OK, but the more savvy users will stop and think, OK, *censored*, why do I need admin permissions for IE just to view whatever.com?

Thought experiment: having UAC disabled. Let's say you need to download a text file. Your favourite editor is of course associated with it. What you- or anybody really- doesn't know is that there is a flaw in that text editor that allows the syntax highlighting engine to be manipulated to allow custom pieces of text to be executed as native macro commands for the editor; let's say (for the sake of argument, and because it is hardly a corner case) this editor has a very rich scripting language that allows you to do *censored* near anything. Your BOSS, or whomever sent you this text file; you know the text file is "safe" because I mean, it's a text file right? Text Files aren't dangerous! So you download it. Of course, unbeknowest to you, the sender was infected with a rootkit that was configured to paste the exploit text at the end of the file whenever it was edited; and of course because they used the same text editor as you the malware changed it so the macros hide the presence of the text. So now when you go to open it, the exploit code is able to take over the editor, and works from WITHIN the editor process doing whatever it pleases. It basically perfectly fits the definition of a biological virus in that it reprograms a otherwise benign entity to do it's evil bidding. And since that process is running with full Admin/root permissions (because you trust this editor, and believe that all dangers are perfectly avoidable with safe browsing habits, etc) that exploit code has now owned you. it downloads DATA from the web to install rootkits and other nasties, and now all the text files you edit will have this exploit code. And it the crap just rolls downhill from there. With UAC enabled, all attempted automatic attacks that try to exploit flaws in a program's parsing routines would all fail and you would stand a far higher chance of not getting owned.

As far as windows is concerned, it's one of the least invasive implementations This sounds like a good thing. It's not. On Linux machines you have to SU or get prompted (in a similar fashion to UAC, via a graphical dialog) to run admin apps, utilities, etc. just like on Vista/7; the difference is that everytime, you have to enter your password. Other solutions such as a "suid bit" (trust) or the lock model that some systems implement are rather dangerous and exploitable programmatically.

People often say "ha... it's useless, people just learn to click OK all the time"; that's a non-argument. As I noted above, it has tremendous benefits. People should take the time to educate themselves- and their users; as to what UAC really is, and exactly what it is doing. None of this "well, I'll only judge it based on what I can see" nonsense.

Lastly, you can do everything right (not downloading suspicious apps, running a good AV, firewall, etc) but still get infected/owned through no fault of your own. it's not so much like building a wooden lava bridge over a volcanic crater as much as it is building a wooden lava bridge over a volcanic crater while a whole bunch of people are swinging it from side to side to try to get you to fall. Falling is not your fault; choosing to use the bridge rather then the path is; just because it's a tad faster doesn't mean it's the smartest option. Running applications with Super-User/admin permissions is equally dangerous on every platform.

Also, some may say "well that text file thing is made up" It's not; When I was running XP I was whalloped by virut simply by opening a text file (truly the editor program's fault) of course, the text file wasn't from a trusted source; and naturally it opens fine in notepad and you just see some goofy characters at the end; but open it in the text editor I was USING at the time (which I won't mention, the bug has since been fixed so it's nothing but finger-pointing, as they are hardly the only one with the issue) happened to misinterpret the BOM; additionally, the extension that was chosen meant that a specific syntax highlighter was selected for use which happened to contain a parsing flaw that caused a buffer overflow, allowing crafted pieces of the text file to be inserted into the stack of the text editor; for example, the stack frame pointer was corrupted to point to the start of what in notepad just looks like nothing but is in fact a "NOP sled" leading up to the malicious code (which just looks like garble). So the text file was able to execute MACHINE CODE because of a flaw in a text editor. This is not a backwater, unpopular text editor either; it's quite popular. Like I say, this isn't limited to text files, or text editor with syntax highlighters, or anything of that sort. Basically, the very act of dealing with files at all, for any purpose presents a risk. Especially when you CONSIDER that parsing a text document is relatively simple. new, similar flaws are found in web browsers all the time that cause similar conditions that allow them to change the in-memory execution context to do their evil bidding. If that application has full control, that evil code has full control. It doesn't matter how few bugs or how many fixes said application has had- it only takes one to lose your machine- and through no fault of your own, save not using UAC, which would cause the attempt to infect to fail silently, or possibly, in a second-to-worst case scenario, show a prompt (the worst case scenario is that it somehow bypasses UAC entirely, which is far less common).

The reason I state this is because I quite understand the sentiment; before I used Vista it was mine as well, and the first thing I did was disable UAC. But (as I was dealing with some files that were still infected from the XP machine) I got re-infected with the same thing, I reformatted, and decided "alright, I'll leave UAC on, just until I know I don't have any evil files here" And I haven't disabled it since. The example cited may seem to be a huge corner case that requires several coincidences and several correspondences to be present, but it is exactly that which the baddies take advantage of.

Update # 2.

Well whether this PC meets the requirements or not, at the moment it's running Vista just fine. I was finally able to find/download and install the SigmaTel driver that I required. Sound problem gone. Actually that was the last REAL problem that I was having with the installation. Still don't know what that FCDABIOS (2003) device EnumeratorOO (still with yellow flag) is though? In any case, as long as that notification doesn't keep popping up I'm not going to worry about it. So, if Vista keeps running as it is presently, that'll be great.

Thanks once more Allan. Much appreciated. overthehill

some info at http://driver-backup.com/driver_detail/?driver_id=56704 on FCDABIOS (2003) device Enumerator but I'm still not sure what device it relates to. If you click on System devices on that web page, the next page shows a long list. If you eventually notice something that doesn't SEEM to work right, that may be your clue to this mystery.

You might try letting Device Manager search the internet for a driver for that item. I'd bet chances are slim it will find a driver to resolve it but still worth a try. Quote from: soybean on March 26, 2011, 07:54:55 AM

Thanks soybean for your interest. And yes, Device Manager kept offering to search the web to find the correct driver but could find nothing. I followed your link and download the driver for FCDABIOS (2003) device EnumeratorOO, which btw was on the first page. But, it wasn't very fruitful, couldn't find driver or ? in that download. Didn't SEE anything either that I could relate to in that long list. Anyway, what I did then was go to the FCDABIOS (2003) device EnumeratorOO file in System Devices on my PC(the file that looked OK) and found that the manufacturer is Farstone. I went to the Farstone SITE and downloaded the driver (rather huge), from there. Their instructions are to "Add Driver" to Pre-Windows Recovery Manager ,which doesn't appear to be anywhere on my system.
If I understand this properly, Farstone is used for Virtual Drive / Back Ups, which I never use anyway. Assuming that I'm correct, if it gives me anymore concerns I can always delete Virtual Drive from Add/Remove programs.
btw, haven't been bothered with that pop up since early yesterday. Maybe it's gone

Well, the settings my look fine but I suspect there's SOMETHING not quite right in the settings. How did you create the account in WLM (Windows Live Mail)? Did you manually enter the account settings or did you use the automated account setup feature in WLM? If you did it manually, I suggest exporting the account to a .iaf file, deleting it, and then try creating the account again by letting WLM search for the account settings. When using this method, you simply enter your email address and your password; WLM then searches the internet to find the proper settings and sets up the account. This will not always work but, if it does, it's the easiest way to set up an account. If if does not work, you can delete that account and import the account you exported back into WLM.

Solve : Only one monitor shows up in Display control panel?

Hi,

I have a HP7700 desktop PC running Windows 7 Enterprise with a video CARD that has both a VGA _AND_ a DVI output. I connected two monitors to it, one to the VGA and the other to the DVI output. However, when I tried to CONFIGURE them as an extended desktop, I see next to the DISPLAY just the one option, "(Default Monitor) on" with a drop-down WINDOW. When I click on the drop-down window, I see the same identical option. Normally, I should see two options, the second one allowing me to choose multiple monitors. So, basically, I am stuck with the same display on both monitors. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.Unless the card supports multiple monitors it doesn't matter how many connectors it has...

Solve : I want every window on my vista os to open maximum?

Answer»

I know it's a dumb question, but I can't get windows to always open at "maximum". I've use XP OS on my laptop and Vista on my tower. I've tried unlocking and re locking the toolbar, searching help, and exploring advanced folder setting. I click 'maximum' in the UPPER right hand corner, and of course it stay maximum until I close that window, then right back to wherever it was the first time next time I open it... I've also tried stretching the screens out to 'max' with the cursor -- same thing.
Thanks for someones help... I know you'll laugh, but its really been frustrating for years. Target, there's really no such thing as a dumb question unless it were SOMETHING so simple that a five year old kid could do without assistance. So no laughing for you

Right click on an application's icon and make sure the settings under "Run" is set to maximized, that way the program should open maximized upon start. See following screenshot for a sample:

Also you can try changing MaximizeApps key in the Registry Setting the following:

I am not sure if this would apply the settings to all apps on your computer or just Windows Explorer but I know it does work with Windows Explorer. Make a system restore point before you tinker with the registry if you're worried something may go WRONG, that way if you're not happy the way things go, you can set yourself back to the non-changed state.

Code: [Select]1. Open the registry editor (type regedit into start menu search bar, then press enter)

2. Find this Key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

3. Add a new DWORD value named “MaximizeApps”

4. Set the value to 1To make things clearer for the OP on both Vista/XP or Win 7 suggested by 2x3i5x's screenshot, on your My Computer icon on your dekstop, right-click and choose create shortcut first then on the shortcut to My Computer icon, right-click again and choose properties then follow the image provided and click "Apply". By default if you right-click My Computer(original icon) and choose Properties, it will open System Properties and tabs but in the created shortcut icon will give you the option to run windows explorer option to maximized provided you choose the Shortcut to My Computer icon when opening Windows explorer. The two icons will differ upon opening(one is minimized and the other is max). On other Windows programs icons you could directly have this options by right-clicking to choose how it will run/open other than the My computer icon. 2x3i5x and Jason 2074, Thank you for your very clear answers, I understood both. Unfortunately what I'm trying to do is get all windows and folder to open "maximum". In other words, I know how to set the shortcut to launch at max size, but where I crash and burn is when: Say I'm on my internet browser I link to a second window, it comes up 'almost' max, so I try pulling it to max, or hitting the middle button upper right hand corner, and of course it goes to maximum, then if I close that window and reopen it or another one, it goes back to same size it was. Same thing happens when I open a folder like "my documents" I've somehow got it to default at about 3/4 of maximum on my screen. I pull, stretch, or hit the "max" in the upper right. Works fine until I close it, then bingo, the *censored* thing goes right back to the default size next time I open it.

Sorry, I know I've got something locked or CHECKED somewhere in my settings... but I don't know where? Thanks again, Targetimesten There has never been a clearer option or support to make folders, browsers under Win OS as a user interface to control or override this problem. Jason, is there a way to get a folder or window to "STAY" maximum size once you set it??? I"m thinking there must be because when I hit a highlighted URL and it opens a second window in my browser it always defaults to the same (almost full) size on my computer every time? Some tips here might be helpful:

P.First you said you wanted all your windows to open maximized.

Now it seems you only want IE windows to open maximized.

Either way, these settings are not something windows controls. An application decides how it opens it's window. Some programs save window locations, positions, and states, and others don't.

You can force IE6 to save window positions but really if you have multiple windows you ought to switch to a tabbed browser.Quote

This is the best solution to opening another link. In my part, I was never annoyed of clicking the restore or maximize page option since it just require little effort or a one-click to make a browser display in full-page. Who knows in the future we will have this a fully featured option for all users.Target, after you have stretched your second IE window close IE and make sure that the stretched window is the last one you close. Then restart IE.In a browser, the F11 key is my favourite...

Solve : SKYPE - They can't hear me?

Answer»

When I go to the Skype Test ...and flunk it, I go back to check the Master Volumn. The MIC was unchecked before I went to Skype but after I go to Skype it is checked, so Skype is causing it. Help I am supposed to get a skype call for a job today!

Found this for a old version....3.1 it may help

If this USB headset device created a Audio In device, you may NEED to change Skype to use it.

On the Skype CLIENT Window do: Tools -> Options -> Sound Devices. Change the Audio In device to the device used by the USB device, make sure you click the save button.

NOTE: You may need to manually change the Audio In device back to what it was when you are not using the USB device, check the vendor documentation for any Skype specific suggestions for use with Skype in case there is a way to automate this process.

Sorry I should have included that the sound is on my LAPTOP. Toshiba laptop. When I open Master Volume and click ADVANCED The Tone Controls are set at low and I cannot change them because they are GREYED out. There is Other Controls and 1 Microphone BOOST is checked.

I have an interview for a job tomorrow on Skype and I hope someone can help me.

Solve : Hoe do I prevent the installing of particular updates?

Answer»

and then make it so the computer never asks me to install them again?

I have windows 7, and occasionally the computer asks me to install windows 7 service pack 1 or a video driver or something. I have installed the windows 7 SP and also the video driver update. Everytime the video driver update happens, my video becomes low resolution, so how do I prevent this update from ever appearing in the updates list again? I havent had any problems since I downloaded the windows 7 SP, but if there ever is one, then Id like to uninstall it and prevent it from ever being installed again. How do I do that
1) NEVER install drivers from Windows Update. Drivers should always be obtained from the OEM websites.
2) Right-click on any update you don't WANT to see again and select "Hide"Also turn off Automatic Updates...
It will STILL notify you of new ones and you can review/reject them as you go...oh thanks GUYS. The right click of an update and CHOOSING hide worked.

It Was A Virus Attacked Which Cause This Issue
Why are people even bothering to post here? the OP CLEARLY can't follow instructions. This thread is just a journal of their futile attempts to fix it on their own. besides, it's Wednesday. Why they needed it FIXED by Tuesday I could only guess but I can SAY I really don't care for being told to "hurry" even IMPLICITLY, as if their immediate resolution is somehow our responsibility- this is only amplified by the fact that absolutely none of the suggestions GIVEN so far have been followed anyway except by pure coincidence, or what translates to "well I downloaded the file you told me to download onto a USB key and then did nothing with it, should I read the rest of your post" type reply.

I think it referring to pulling a train whistle. Oh, Thankyou so much, I had ALWAYS wondered what it meant.

And about windows, I'd like to read more on its features etc, I don't know much about it yet.I herd they made it for those MINI laptops and they cant run vista and they are worried about linuxhttp://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

That's an idea. Microsoft should make a very stable operating system specific for low spec computers.

From what it said when installing, the minimum for windows 7 was 1ghz cpu and 1gb of ram.Quote from: Briguy on January 10, 2009, 08:44:47 PM

From what it said when installing, the minimum for windows 7 was 1ghz cpu and 1gb of ram.

I've got it running on a computer with a 1.6 single core processor and 512MB RAM.
It's perfect. Everything I would expect from an Operating System.
It looks good, and it's speed isn't compromised by its graphics. Very fast, and very user-friendly.

Solve : Installing Windows 7 on virtual partition?

Answer»

Hello everyone, I'm just wondering how SAFE and possible it is for me to set up a virtual partition on my computer, and then install windows 7 on it? I have the 32 bit beta from the microsoft website.
I have never set up virtual partitions before.

I would install it on my backup machine, but its not powerful, so I'd like to try it on my more powerful but primary machine - and really don't want to screw it up.

How easy and how safe is it to do this? If it is very dangerous I won't try it, but I've gone to all the effort of downloading the beta now...

If you COULD, some kind of step-by-step guide would be rather useful. Here Ya Go...As awesome as that link is, can I just check something?
I'm running windows XP... should have mentioned that.install Virtual PC or something, then. that should work. And the windows 7 installer will recognize it? Ok, cool. I'll try it tomorrow. When you install Virtual PC, you don't NEED to burn it to a CD.
You can use the .ISO file and get Virtual PC to treat it as a CD.This is a coincidence because I just (yesterday) installed Windows 7 Public Beta (build 7000) using VMWare Workstation. First of all I downloaded the public beta ISO 2.5 GB file and burned it to a DVD-R and then I created a virtual machine in VMWare and booted it off the install DVD. The install halted and said it could not read install.wim. I did a bit of Googling and found that this most likely a bad burn. Apparently Microsoft say you should burn the disk at the slowest speed your DVD burner supports. I had used 8x but my burner goes down to 2x for that brand so that was my fault. Anyway, I then remembered that virtualizing apps like VMWare and Virtual PC support using the ISO file without having to burn it, as Carbon Dudeoxide said above. So I installed that way and it all WENT just fine. I am sure Virtual PC will be the same. I have a 3 GHz Pentium 4 (Prescott) with 1 GB of RAM. Windows 7 has 512 MB allocated and seems a little slow run like this, whereas OpenSuSe 11.0 (also with 512 MB) gives a very smooth and snappy experience.

There are very well seeded torrents around of ready made VMWare virtual machines of this Windows 7 Beta, but I like to do things the hard way...

I must say, at first look, I don't like the Windows 7 era GUI one little bit.

I had that happen to me too. It was the IDE cable on the dvd player that was bad. Try swapping it out.Quote from: Briguy on January 11, 2009, 08:42:11 AM

Apparently Microsoft says you should burn the install disk at the slowest speed your DVD burner supports. I had used 8x but my burner goes down to 2x for that brand so that was my fault. The funny thing is, I can burn audio CDs at 42x and DVDs (don't ask) at 16x and they play just fine. I have got a brand new 80 wire cable so maybe I'll swap it anyway.

I'm in the middle of solving similar problem.
I downloeded Win 7 two days ago from "Wired" link, burned it to DVD, and I attempted install today, using VMWare. The installation kept freezing at "Starting Windows", and actually it was even freezing my computer.
At first, I thought, maybe formatting virtual partition in SCSI was at fault ( I had this problem with installing 7 pre-beta), so I created new partition, using IDE.
Same problem.
I thought, bad download, so I started new download, before I saw this thread.
I'll try 3 things, when download is done:
1. Burn at normal speed
2. Burn at slower speed
3. Install from .iso on hard drive

P. S. With Win 7 pre-beta, switching from SCSI to IDE, solved the problem. Pre-beta DVD was burned at normal speed, and I installed pre-beta from DVD, not from .iso on hard drive.Quote from: BRONI on January 11, 2009, 01:53:35 PM

I used SCSI (it was recommended in the VMWare virtual machine setup)

THis is what I did.Quote

I know it is, but pre-beta installation was hanging no matter what until I switched from SCSI to IDE. I didn't try to install from .iso back then.
Stupid me. I tried to be a smart a**, and I set RAM for Win 7 installation in VMWare to 2048MB, not seeing VMWare note about not setting RAM to higher, than 1700MB.
I changed it to 1024MB, and it installed right away from the very same DVD.Quote

No problem at all. You are a experienced user.

There is no case ever in the history of beta testing that
a beta program will travel through the air and find the
backup HDD you keep in a locked vault.

Experienced users, like you of course, always have a
backup HDD made the day before.
So yes, you are safe. With a virtual partition or a virtual PC, i still need to be running XP, don't I? Is there a way of *just* having Windows 7 running?
