Answer»

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 1545 for a CUSTOMER, vista basic. I have found no solution what so ever can anyone help? thanks in advanceYou may be INFECTED which is a common symptom if trying Windows Update...
Try this:
In IE go to Tools/Internet Options/Connections/LAN settings and uncheck "use PROXY"...
Reboot and try Windows Updates.

Other than that if it resets itself that WAY travel to our Virus and Spyware section...that was one of the first THINGS i checked, going hit the virus thing again with a different program and see what happens

Solve : Partioning hard drives?

Answer»

I am working on a dell vostro 1000. There are 2 partitioned drives, C & D. C has 31.2 gb.....D has 68.3 gb. I am doing a reinstall with the recovery disk. My prob is that when I do the reinstall, C is smaller than D, and once I add all the new updates and etc, C gets full. I need to make C drive partition bigger but when it via the recovery disks, thats the sizes it makes the drives. Can someone tell me how to partition them or maybe another option? Thanks! You can use a third party utility such as Easus Partition Manager: http://www.partition-tool.com/The Best Partition editor/resizer is GParted
It's bootable

what the *censored* is going on here? Are you going to continue to say "that's your opinion" and make other backwards and grammar-based logical attacks on everything anybody says?

First you said that GParted is the best partition editor/resizer.

Since that is clearly your view, Allan correctly said it was an opinion, since, by definition, an opinion is "a personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof".

You then REPLY that this statement that it's your opinion is also merely an opinion, when it was not. Since your view is clearly not based on any factual evidence other then your personal experience with gparted, It was an opinion, and that is a fact.

If Allan had said that GParted was not the best partition editor, that would have been an opinion as well, since it's not founded on proof.

Perhaps next TIME you try to derail a topic or present an argument using recursive logic you might want to look up the definitions of the words your using to make sure that they can even be used recursively and still remain in-context.

Regarding the original question, there are any number of partitioning tools that can be used, most of which can be run from within your Operating System as well as those which can be run from bootable discs. Easeus Partition Manager and GParted are only two possible choices.

Which one you choose is really inconsequential- support for resizing partitions without DATA loss is nearly ubiquitous.
I ABSOLUTELY Agree

Solve : PCI Input Device/Multimedia Audio Controller issue: Win 7 Ultimate?

Answer»

Hello everyone, I haven't been here in ages. It's good to see theres still a community here! ANYWAY, I am sitting here pulling my hair out trying to figure this one out!

I am Dual Booting XPsp3 and Windows 7. XP works perfectly. I recently installed windows 7 and started updating my drivers. THATS when i noticed my chipset doesn't seem to be installed. I have onboard 7.1 Realtec Audio that suddenly stopped WORKING last year so i disabled AC97 in the bios and popped in a pci soundcard(Creative Labs Model CT4670). The soundcard works perfect in XP, devices are installed in device Manager, but windows 7 DM doesn't see anything but
-PCI Input Device! and
-Multimedia Audio Controller !

Windows will not update these, I have been to MSI support for latest mobo\bios drivers, NVIDIA support for latest chipset drivers, Creative for the drivers to the soundcard, AND installed DriverMagic, and Driver Genius. Everything says I am fully updated, but I still dont see the chipset in Device Manager.

SPECS-
Custom Built
mobo- k8n neo4 platinum AMD NVIDIA Chipset
CPU- AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2.40 GHZ
RAM- 2.50Gb
Hdd- (5)
Audio Card- Creative Labs Model CT4670
Video Card- NVIDIA GeForce 6800
------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
I am Dual booting 32 bit windows xpsp3, and Windows 7 Ult 64x.
I cannot find ANY drivers pertaining to my hardware and Windows 7 64x.
so i tried
-x64 vista drivers (the setup failed because it claimed the installer was 32 bit.)
-Windows XP x64 drivers (said the same thing)
-32 bit XP and Vista drivers (failed because installer is 32???)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
When I run the Creative drivers (32bit? because the 64 setup claimed it was 32), it loads the installer successfully, but tells me there are no creative lab devices connected. This tells me that the soundcard is not an issue, but the pci slots are not recognized. I checked everything in the bios. and again,
Everything works fine when i boot into xp, so this problem is IN Windows 7!!

Please Help?!If you are running 53bit Win7 then if there are not Win7 64bit drivers you're next best choice would be Vista 64bit drivers...not XP.I am running 64 bit, but 64 bit installers are failing, 32 bit are not.
The 64 bit installers claim
" you are running a 32 bit application in a 64 environment"Then you mistakenly installed the 32bit ver. of Win7...Take a look at these pictures, let me know what you think

www.dtmidian.viviti.comWell according to the pics it is Win7 Ultimate and is 64bit ver....

But i know of no existing glitch in Win7 that blocks driver installs....this is provided they are the correct drivers.

Puzzling that it's more than one though...

1st thing i would do is try uninstalling both of those "driver tools" you have installed...re-boot and try agaim/The NForce 4 has been in Legacy support by manufacturers and Nvidia since before Windows 7's release. There are no Windows 7 drivers.

The Message you receive is actually not accurate. it's a catch all "version mismatch" error. The drivers were released for Windows Vista- and they check windows Vista. When they don't find Vista, they display that error (or so it would appear judging from people with similar problems). You could try setting compat mode on the installer to Windows Vista.

You were right on with the compatability mode, chipset installed, but pci input and multimedia are still in DM still no sound. I am beginning to think that i have tried everything i can but this audio card will not work with windows 7. guess i'll have to get a new one. Thanks for your input guys

Solve : Update BIOS??

Answer»

I'm pretty sure I found out why I had bluescreens, and how to fix it.

The thing is, I have to update my BIOS. I acquired this file "G60J207.T10".

Where the *censored* do I put that thing? There seems to be absolutely no info on google about this subject. I feel kind of stupid now.

Edit: Maybe this would need to be moved to "Drivers" section? You put it on a bootable DOS floppy along with a flashing program. There are about a zillion "how to flash your BIOS" sites out there, which explain the process much better than I can, but I will say that if you don't know what you are doing, or if you have the wrong file, you can easily brick your motherboard.
You usually are well advised to download the BIOS updating program from either your motherboard or BIOS manufacturer. Some MB's like ASUS have a crash free capability letting you recover from a botched flash, but if you're not sure what you're doing, get someone who does to do it.. That is unless it's a PC you can live without..Quote from: obchris on June 26, 2010, 01:04:13 PM

Oh stop. Flashing a bios is no more dangerous than than turning on a television.

You might be surprised at how MANY BIOS flash failures occur. Flashing the BIOS on a flaky system because you think it will put things right is asking for trouble. Using the wrong flashing tool or the wrong BIOS image also. Flashing from Windows is a well known cause of bad flashes. Some brands of motherboard are known to be prone to flash failures. PERSONALLY if the chip is socketed I would rather mail order a new chip flashed with the desired version. I had a Shuttle mini PC suffer a flash failure with the right image, the right program, everything done by the book. I AFTERWARDS found that many people have had problems with that board. Well, I have to respectfully disagree. In the old days yes, there were lots of stories about botched bios flashes. But these days, absent a power failure there is little danger - in my opinion. I just have a problem with people scaring others, warning them not to update the bios when a bios flash is clearly called for.I don't recommend BIOS flashes for those very reasons...

A) What issues is he having ? ?

And
B) Does the flash directly deal with those issues ? ?

If not it's best to not do it.Well, we've had this disagreement before. I do agree that if there is no specific reason to update the bios then it should not be done - same with updating drivers. But I don't agree with spreading fear over performing a bios upgrade. But okay - different opinoins. The BIOS version I have now is responsible for many bluescreens I've had, including BATTLEFIELD: Bad Company 2, so not flashing isn't really an option.

Read here: http://g51jbsod.wikia.com/wiki/ASUS_G51J-A1_0x124_BSOD

Now on the ASUS website, there was the file "AFLASH 2", I'm guessing that's the BIOS flashing program.

I've read a few articles on how to flash and most of them REFER to a floppy disk. However I'm on a laptop and I certainly don't have one. I'm guessing I can mount it as an image on a CD?Quote from: DivineRage002 on June 26, 2010, 02:00:31 PM

No, you don't mount it as an image on a CD.
If your BIOS has no option for flashing from within the BIOS, you will have to create a DOS Boot CD or a boot USB drive, with the flash program & the flash image copied to it. "AFLASH 2" is the flash program, "G60J207.T10" is the flash image. What was that again, Allan?
Well, I never said it would be easy Hey, just wanted to say that I successfully updated the BIOS.

Turns out that since I have an ASUS motherboard, I could use the "Easy Flash" utility in the BIOS.

Basically, I formatted a USB flash drive to FAT32, put the two BIOS update files on it, restarted computer, went in BIOS, and just used "Easy Flash". Whole process took about 5 minutes, and everything went smooth.

And I can also confirm that I no longer get blue screens in Battlefield, or any other game in which I used to get some.Way to go!

Solve : Install Question?

Answer»

This may be kind of a stupid question, but here it is anyway. My C drive just bit the dust. I have a 1TB drive that I was using to BACK up PHOTOS. My question is... if I install windows on that drive, will the files on the drive be bothered at all? I would think not as long as I don't format??Quote

will the files on the drive be bothered at all?
Yes.
They will be erased.
You will have to format to do an install.
format = erase
There is a way around this though. If the 1tb drive is split into different partitions you can install an operating system on a partition where there is no important data. Even if the 1TB drive is only one partition there are partition resizing programs that you can use to effectively shrink your partition. However, while usually pretty SAFE, these partition resizing programs can be dangerous and you may end up inadvertently erasing the data that you were trying to save in the first place.

What's wrong with the old hard drive?Quote from: bgphotoo on July 08, 2010, 05:15:14 PM

You are correct. Unless you format the drive during the selection phase you can easily install windows to a drive that already contains files.

It's obviously best to back them up first, but I've done it myself several times with no ill effects (of course, your mileage may vary). Thanks for the INFO. I thought I had that option BC, I just wasn't sure. I went ahead and partitioned the drive anyway. JJ, I had a NTLDR is Missing error the other day and after looking into it I realized the drive was not coming up at all. I'm gonna put it in a housing and SEE if I can salvage anything from it. Now I seem to be having a driver problem of some kind. when I boot up the screen goes black but I can hear it finish booting. If I boot in safe mode or low res mode everything is fine. I guess I have the wrong display driver or something.

Solve : Windows File Sorting Problem?

Answer»

Alright let me explain and give a example of my problem. For some reason my file sorting wont sort correctly with numbers Example: 1.mkv 11.mkv-19.mkv, 2.mkv, 20.mkv-29.mkv im sure you get the idea, this occurs for Explorer and programs like torrent clients EVEN Media Player Playlists. I try sorting in explorer and thats how it sorts the files, same thing when sorting by name also.

Please help me! my OS is Windows7 32Bit. Version 6.1.7600 Build 7600
Thanks to ANYONE who helps as per the filenames you give in your example, try changing the filenames 1.mkv to 01.mkv and also 2.mkv to 02.mkv. It should now be sorting as such:

01.mkv 02.mkv-11.mkv, 19.mkv, 20.mkv-29.mkv

THOUGH I'm using windows vista, I bet windows 7 works just the same.Quote

1.mkv 11.mkv-19.mkv, 2.mkv, 20.mkv-29.mkv

Isn't that the normal Windows sort order?

It's ASCII sort order, I think is the problem (the 2.mkv appears between 19 and 20).

Windows XP (and maybe Vista, can't remember) used this for sorting.

Windows 7 uses "Natural" sort order, which sorts values with corresponding numbers as one would expect. 2.mkv appears after 1.mkv, not between 19.mkv and 20.mkv.

That being said, when I first saw this topic I did a quick SEARCH to see if there was some sort of way to accidentally "turn off" this feature. I couldn't find anything that SEEMED like it could be the problem, though.

Solve : Want to improve computer performance.. Help??

Ok, i play World of Warcraft a good amount, and i wanna get a nice monitor and keyboard and mouse, that kind of thing, to make my DESK look nice, and that really has nothing to do with the questions, but i wanna make my computer run better in WoW, MEANING i wanna run it at higher SETTINGS, with less lag. I have a laptop btw, so I cant PERSONALLY put new parts in it, as im not farmiliar with opening laptops and stuff, So heres some information..
Specs for WoW.. http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/faq/technology.html

Specs for Laptop
HP pavillion dv6..
Intel core 2 DUO processor P7350 (2.0GHZ)
500GB harddrive..
6144MB DDR2 Ram (6.144 gigs)
Random on-board Video card..
Hope you guys can help! thanks in advance!! Looks like you and I run the same family of PC's

Unfortunately because it's an on-board video card you have little hope of upgrading it(dv6 = dv6000 series of laptops?) . But you can go to your BIOS and increase the amount of video memory for your video card to utilize. I increased my laptop from sixty something to 128MB of memory and it's doing a bit better on my MMO games.

Good luck!

Solve : Formatt and reinstall with out all the windows junk?

Answer»

Hello everyone,
first time poster long time reader...

I have Windows Vista INSTALLED on my Sony Vaio lap top and I am wanting to format to get rid of all the junk that came already installed.

I have already backed up all the media i want to save on an external hard drive, and im pretty sure i have two hard drives on my lap top but i have no start up disks (i do have blank disks though).

My questions are:

A: what is the easiest way to initialize a format on my hard drive?

B: How can i reinstall windows with out all the junk it came with? I have all the programs I would like backed up.

C: is this possible to do without a start up disk(s)? I have an extra hard drive on my lap top and also blank disks but i would like to do whatever is easiest.

Im pretty novice overall and I would appreciate speaking in lamens terms. There are only two ways to reinstall Windows:
1. Using Vista DVD - no junk, but you'll have to hunt for some drivers
2. Using recovery DVDs, or recovery partiiton - junk included; no need to look for driverslooking for drivers doesn't sound very fun but at the same time i have to get rid of all these different Vaio programs. I dont need all the EXCESS downloaded hidden junk either.

Do you think going through and manually removing all of them through add/remover programs and them maybe doing a defrag would give me some results?

i feel like im at a loss at this point. If i had to search for drivers i would be on this FORUM for the next 3 months. Hahaha....
If you want to use recovery PROCESS, so you don't have to look for drivers...
Download, and install Quick Startup: http://www.glarysoft.com/qs.html
It'll show you all startups.
Use these sites to determine, if you need particular startup, or not:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php
You can disable unneeded startups using Quick Startup.

On a top of it, go to "Programs & Features" and uninstall all garbage, you don't need.Quote from: Broni on June 24, 2010, 07:48:31 PM

On a top of it, go to "Programs & Features" and uninstall all garbage, you don't need.
That alone should be sufficient to get rid of unneeded stuff that will be installed if you use the recovery partition to restore your system to its original configuration. And, if you do this, take a look at your desktop. It may have icons for some of the unneeded stuff; some icons may be nothing more than shortcuts to a WEBSITE to subscribe to some service or buy something. For example, when I bought my Compaq laptop 3 years ago, it had a desktop shortcut to Vonage. But, my laptop also had numerous HP programs that I did not need or want, and I removed them.

And, of course, you could explore some cleanup now instead of proceeding with formatting and reinstalling via the recovery partition.

By the way, you do not have 2 hard drives in your laptop. You have 1 hard drive which is partitioned and Windows recognizes partitions as separate hard drives. But, again, it's just one physical hard drive. Quote

If you have a Windows CD, you could try using nlite/vlite to remove components/bloatware.
Unfortunately this doesn't work with recovery disks. As for formatting, you could do that with any decent USB/Floppy/DVD.CD medium. The Windows 7/Vista cd's themselves come with tools to format hard drives. But without start up disks, I cant think of any other way to remove it unless you do it manually.

The closest solution i can think of is start with a fresh factory reset of your laptop, remove all the bloatware, save any windows settings then create a system image through the built in Windows backup utility.

Solve : Windows Live Mail with windows 7?

Answer» HI,
I have a friend who was trying to send a bunch of photos one night...after a few too many. Anyway he tried to send a folder and not the files. The mail server didn't like it and sent back an error. I have looked at the mail folders...inbox, sent, delete...etc. and can't find the bad email anywhere but each time we open the program it tries to send the folder and gives us the same error. Does anyone know how to clear out the error?

The message could not be sent because its size exceeded the server's limit. You can use the option, located in Tools | Accounts | Properties | Advanced, to break messages into smaller parts.

Subject 'Emailing: New folder'
Server Error: 552
Server Response: 552 5.2.0 aN5W1e00J5BzEHi02N5W7p attachment extension is forbidden
Server: 'smtp.east.cox.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC6D
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 25
Secure(SSL): No

There are limits on all servers for file size. You could try compressing them using winzip or some other trusted software. Also try sending them individual and not as a folder. You may have better luck.
Hope that helps.

And try clearing out the browsers cache. Is there a Drafts or Unsent folder in Live Mail ? ?

I can try this inbox clean up. Maybe that has a shot at it.

Its strange. The program still works and he can get new mail and even send mail but each time he does he gets the same error which he clears and then things are back to normal until the next send and receive.

He may want to contact the ISP...I can try that also....

The machine has 2 users on it. His is the only account with the problem the other account works fine.

I was thinking about killing his email account and remaking it.

The file/folder is not going to EXIST in the inbox since it was something he attempted to send...so you can safely ignore that tip...

Solve : Selecting a modem?

Answer»

Hi I'm new to your forum. but I have an interesting question!
I own a Dell Dimensions 521 Computer with AMD 64 and windows Vista.
Last year my computer when turned on went right to Energy power save.
I just took her in to get her fixed and found out that I need a new mother board. The computer has hardly been used so I am get a new mother board for her. Now my question is when I get her HOME which modem should i get for internet access from my cable company?Your cable company can furnish one for you but there will be a MONTHLY fee. If it fails the cable company will generally replace it for free assuming normal use.

If you decide to buy one, I would find out what brand your cable system uses and be INCLINED to buy that brand. Otherwise, Motorola is a safe choice.

You just need to check modem prices versus the cable systems fees and SEE which way you want to go.

Solve : no driver for windows vista install?

Answer»

Hi i have a second hand DELL laptop in which my hard drive failed. Windows XP was installed on it.

I have just bought a new hard drive: Samsung IDE MODEL HM160HC

I have fitted the hard drive and im trying to install Windows VISTA

Im getting the error message : No drives were found. Click load driver to provide mass storage driver for installation.

Basically i think the computer is not recognising the hard drive

Does anyone have any answers, the hard drive type (IDE) is the CORRECT one as verified in a computer repair shop to the previous broken one??? So you have only one drive installed - the new one, correct? If so, boot to the Vista cd and begin the installation process.Yes just the basic new correct replacement internal laptop hard drive, for a DELL laptop that is capable of running vista.

The error message comes up shortly after loading the Vista CD ROM, just after you choose the required language & click install.

It will only allow me the custom option to install windows (pos because brand new drive). I click on this & it comes up with the error message:

"No drives were found. Click load driver to provide mass storage driver for installation".

Clicking on load driver doesnt seam to work either.

No driver disk came with the hard drive & i do not have the original laptop untility cd roms as its second hand.

I`ve done some basic checking on google & others have reported similar problems with SATA drives, fixed by changing the jumpers.
Being IDE without any jumpers this fix will not work in this situation.

This may be a hardware issue as well???Go into the bios and see if there is a setting called: SATA Configuration. If so, set it to IDE, save the change and reboot.chers i thought the answer could lay there,

Can you be more specific as to where on the BIOS screen i will find this please? It may be in the Advanced section - but just look around, you'll find it. Be CAREFUL not to make any other changes.Problem solved

It was a missing interposer board that connects to my hard drive that was missing.

The computer now recognises the hard drive

Chers Thanks for the update.Excellent !
\Glad to HEAR you're fixed

Solve : mail disappears?

Answer»

Mail disappears from in-box as soon as it is opened. It is completely gone, not in the deleted items, nowhere. What is wrong and how can this be fixed? I have Vista using WINDOWS mail...What mail app would help...I said in the post it was windows mail using Vista..Windows has a few mail apps...Outlook...Outlook Express...Live Mail etc.I'm not using my Windows Vista laptop now so I'm talking from a general point of view. Have you reviewed SETTINGS in Windows Mail? I don't recall whether it has a setting to delete messages as soon as they have been read, although I would THINK no such setting EXISTS.

Solve : laptop is bogged down ever since...?

That just means that the file is likely LOADED upon boot so when you try to delete it, it's actually open and in use by the operating system.

No. It isn't.

absolutely NONE of this makes any sense. The file is 10MB. So freaking what? you aren't going to save any space at all by futzing about deleting "large" DLL files, which aren't even a tenth of a % of the total disk space.

use Programs And Features to remove Applications you don't use. Perhaps move your data to another drive. Whatever the case, people have been trying to "free space" by deleting random program DLLs strewn about their disk and all they get in the end is two fistfuls of their own hair. Use WinDirStat to find out where your space is being consumed. You will find that a good chunk of it is in your own data folders. This is the same suggestion given days ago by Allan (treesize is the same type of program).

If that subdirectory will really get you a lot of space

94MB is not a lot of space.

Quote from: obchris on June 26, 2010, 01:28:50 PM
Sometimes badly written install routines do not conform to the standards, and they install their application in a subdirectory not under program files. As long as it seems that the files in there are all related to the moviemaker application and you don't see other obvious program names or directories, you should be ok per my last post.

Movie maker doesn't have an uninstaller. It installed into program files, and deleting it will orphan about 40 file associations and COM component registrations. And yet this is how you propose they "clean up".

Quote from: obchris on June 26, 2010, 01:16:18 PM
It sounds like you're system is in a bit of a death spiral.. I would 1st and foremost be totally sure you have all your data backed up because at this point, one of these times it just may not start up for you.
If it doesn't start up one day, I assure you it's because somebody gave them the idea it was ok to delete random DLL files.

Quote
Generally, because of how poorly windows cleans up after itself due to both windows and bad application deinstall routines, if you use your system heavily, especially if you install/deinstall programs somewhat often, it's just a good idea to re-core your system every couple of years, or more frequently.
Complete and utter nonsense. Especially considering "recore" isn't even a word any self-respecting tech would use.

Quote
As was posted earlier, if you're only running 2GB ram, your system is probably caching a good bit, and with the disk so full, if you don't regularly defrag, the caching will really bog down performance. To run windows with any decent performance, I never let the boot/caching disk get below 25GB free.
The pagefile is where data is swapped. It's not a cache. a cache is used to ACCESS data faster then it would otherwise be accessed, in this case since it's being stored on a slow medium (disk) rather then a fast one (RAM) it's not being "cached".

secondly, "cached" data is actually stored in low priority memory blocks by SuperFetch That is Cached data because it is being stored in RAM rather then on disk.

Quote
If you have not defragged, I would certainly try that, it alone may help the speed due to the above.

First:Defragmentation is not some magical panacea. You aren't going to see a computer go from "turtle slow" to blazing fast just because you moved a few clusters around on the disk. The fact that people actually believe to be the case this indicates that there is a lot of misunderstanding about what defragmentation actually does.
Second: Windows Vista & 7 automatically do some defragmentation during idle time. At least that what I suspect, considering I've had this install running for nearly a year and my fragmentation rate is 1% or less on all drives.

How do I move data from one drive to another? Thanks.Don't know about the space issue, but i have an idea about why your coputer says you only have 2 GB ram instead of 4. If you have a 32-bit OS, it can only read 2 GB ram(and only use 2 GB), so even if you have more than that, windows won't use it. ALSO, i dont think 10MB is a lot of space, its probably like 0.1 or something like that of your hard drive space, so deleting it wont help much. Someone experienced correct me if im wrong Quote from: maximdymok on June 27, 2010, 12:49:19 AM

a 32-bit OS can access around 3.5 to 4GB of RAM.

Actually, that's a lie, it has nothing to do with the operating system being 32-bit, although that is something many people draw from the issue. It's actually built into many versions of Windows to not recognize past a certain amount- it's listed somewhere in the EULA probably.(the fact that it varies is based on memory used by hardware) for example, Windows 2000 Server could access up to 16GB of RAM (well, I'm not 100% sure on the amount, but it was way past the "4GB barrier", and it's a 32-bit OS.

The common "explanation" is that a 32-bit OS can only access up to 2^32 bytes, which happens to be 4GB. However, that's sort of redundant, when you think about it. For example, the IBM XT was an 8-bit PC and ran MS-DOS, and it could use 1MB of memory- but by the logic put forth today to explain the "4GB barrier" the IBM XT should have only been able to access 2^8 bytes, or a scant 256 bytes. Same story with 16-bit operating systems and hardware, which could use a lot of memory (I ran windows 3.1 with 256MB of memory, which is far in excess to the 32KB (2^16) that I should have been able to access.

Just to be clear, I am of course not "attacking" you or anything, I'm just trying to clear up a common misconception. it's true that some versions of windows have a "limit" to how much memory they can use, but the limit itself is completely artificial and completely unrelated to the hardware capabilities. The reason was because many applications and drivers might have problems if they were mapped (loaded into memory) at addresses higher then about 4GB, so MS decided to artificially limit the amount of memory windows could recognize on 32-bit consumer Operating systems. Since the server operating systems almost always ran hardware specifically designed for server use, (and generally needed gobs of memory) they added no such limit. Same with 64-bit windows.

buy either an external hard drive or blank discs to burn. You may also have a virus attack running in the background that replicates thats why you have a fluctuation of memory space. You mention you have a current antivirus. You may try to download a free antivirus(Avira) and rescan your hard disk to make sure. Just diable temporarily your antivirus before installing your downloaded antivirus.Quote from: jason2074 on June 28, 2010, 06:36:42 AM

1) I'm not aware of any virus that would cause only half of installed ram to be recognized (and present NO other symptoms)
2) I would not install a second AV, but there's never any harm in running a full system scan with you current antivirus software AND with MalwareBytes (which can be installed along side of your av sw)How large is your HD, and how old is it? I haven't seen any mention of that since the beginning of the thread.

Instead of deleting random .dll files and possibly causing havoc in your computer, I would suggest running a cleanup program such as CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner). It will delete most of the useless/empty/temporary files, and may help free a bit of disk space, without sending your computer FUBAR.Quote from: Allan on June 28, 2010, 06:57:57 AM

YES you are not aware of any virus concerning the RAM. It's a different issue. What i'm concern is the fluctuation of his memory space from 10 to 20%. And Joepinger's current antivirus posted having some errors.

Solve : BSOD while gaming?

Answer»

I get a BSOD with the error code STOP: 0xC000021a with the PARAMETER 0xC0000006 while playing Civ IV.

I think a possible reason might be something to do with power issues, because my sister and I share an outlet (from a power bar in my room) and I have no problems after she's gone to BED. I wasn't sure, though, because I haven't found anything through Google search about this error with Windows 7 (Windows NT problem seems to be something to do with printers, but I don't have a printer connected). Any insight would be appreciated.

Of note, my power situation is a bit unusual. My sister's outlets are unfortunately two-prong, so she has an extension cable coming from my power bar to her room, which is plugged into another power bar itself. She runs a TV and a laptop off of that power bar, as well as a fan. My tower and monitor are both plugged into the power bar. Would this cause any difficulties? Strangely enough, I can usually play perfectly fine at night, when my sister is asleep; however, when she is gone to work, and takes her laptop wit her, I still have difficulties running without bluescreening. Could it just be that my house doesn't have the power necessary to supply my computer when there are other things running as well?OK, we have only one BSOD from today and the previous one is all the way back from 6/26
You're saying, you're getting BSODs all the time.

I don't know, what to tell you about that power setup. I simply have no opinion.

Most of your errors come from ntkrnlpa.exe, which is a system file, so the reason could be....anything....from overheating, through hardware (RAM, hard drive) to system files issue, or even some infection.

Try small experiment.
Buy your sister 2-prong to 3-prong adapter (couple of bucks), so she can use her outlet and see how it goes.
I've gotten more than a few bluescreens today, and many over the past month. I guess my computer's not dumping properly.

I'll see if my sister would be up for the adapter idea.

I've run quite a few scans over the past weeks with Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware scan. As well, a few weeks ago my dad's coworker in the IT department took a look at it and apparently the hardware is fine, and he ran a stress test without it bluescreening, which leads me to think it has to do with something exclusive to when I'm using it - my monitor, my keyboard/mouse, my house's electricity, and a few other minor things like a headset and the Ethernet cable. I hope that narrows it down a bit, since the hardware is mostly clean.Quote
I'll see if my sister would be up for the adapter idea.
Let's try this first, so we can eliminate one possible culprit.Turns out those adapters are illegal in Canada due to two-prong outlets being illegal as well.

I'm not sure what course of action to take though. I just bluescreened when my entire family was asleep and there was very little running. It was another 0x7a KERNAL_INPAGE_DATA_ERROR message.Alright, here's the deal...

Should my CPU frequency be that low? And the 5v rail is displaying my -5v rail's voltage, should it be -12.22?Quote from: enginex on July 08, 2010, 12:28:46 AM

2-Pronged outlets aren't illegal. If I understand it correctly, new buildings or renovations need to have grounded outlets, and outlets in the bathroom need to be failsafe (the buggers with "test" and "reset" buttons on them), but, if you are in an older house whose outlets are only two-prongs or where the bathroom outlets aren't the "special" fail-safe ones, it's not illegal. It is extremely annoying though.

I might point out that most devices that have a third prong require it- or more precisely, depend on it. In the case of a computer, often the voltages that are (or, if it actually is connected to a proper ground, aren't) present are used to determine the value of 0 bits... hard to explain, really. As we all know computers communicate throughout themselves using bits of 1 and zero, and these bits are represented by either the presence or the absence of voltage. Most electronic components within the computer will look the the power supply's "ground" wires to know what a 0 is.

Most Power supplies offer GROUNDING through the computer chassis- but they also use the grounding prong of their connection. The fact is, with a adapter, there is no ground connection- is a complete faux. So while the power supply thinks that that particular line is a ground wire that it can rely on as 0, it's not, and is subject to random fluctuations.

of course, you aren't plugging computer into a single pronged outlet, but is your power bar (or your extension cords, or whatever you have) plugged into a three pronged outlet?

Additionally, lectures about grounding aside, I have to believe that this is almost certainly caused by the large number of extension cords and power bars that you seem to have involved (an extension cord plugged into a power bar connected to yet another power bar? Are you serious?

What about plugging your PC and Monitor (or just the PC) directly into the wall instead of a power bar or extension cord? Extension cords, by the way, often have a shoddy or nonexistent ground.

Should my CPU frequency be that low?
Most CPU's downclock automatically when their extra horsepower isn't needed. my desktop and laptop both exhibit similar behaviour. I believe the technology is called speedstep.

Quote
And the 5v rail is displaying my -5v rail's voltage, should it be -12.22?

I'm no electronics expert or electrician, but this could be caused by a faulty ground. the Voltages the Computer reports is really more a matter of "how far away from ground (0) is it?" so if the ground is shoddy and therefore not actually zero the measurements it provides will be skewed.

Except, such skewing would occur with all of them. It's looking like you might want to try another PSU (first though... do any other programs report ~-12 volts for the +5v Rail?

Solve : My RAM is being used for nothing?

Answer»

Well, not really for nothing. So i have a laptop, and its kinda slow when playing GAMES. I have 2 GB ram but half of it is used for another user that's logged in-my brother. He does a lot of stuff and asks me not to log him off. But, he has so many programs open(usually just a lot of IE tabs+windows, like 20 tabs!!)that all of that takes near 1 GB RAM. Is there a way i can free that ram without logging the user off? Thanks.No...Kind of SOUNDS like you have two choices. Either GET more RAM or have your brother get his own computer.Windows VISTA... What can i say?

There is no way to free up RAM from your brothers User Account. Sorry

..::Merlyn::..Ok.. thats sad.. well i gues its sadder for my bro cuz im logging him off Another solution might be for your brother to use Firefox. When it launches, it can be SET to open all previously open tabs, Then you can log him off, and when he opens Firefox he is back to where he was before.

And you can use IE, or whatever you like. There is nothing wrong with Vista and 2GB of RAM is plenty.

Some posters need to do more reading: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2006/09/why-does-vista-use-all-my-memory.html

The USB memory sticks are the best way to transfer personal files. ALL your SYSTEM files are in place. USB sticks are easy to use and you MAY decide at the last second where to place the files on the new machine.

KISS ( Keep It Simple Sam )

Good luckI would recommend using an Ethernet crossover cable.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qp19bfe_eqk&feature=related

Or you could just share a folder on your new computer and copy all the files you need from the old computer to the newer one.

USB sticks work, but not that well. They can only transfer files up to a certain size, and you need to GET DRIVERS, which i could not in my case.Copy them to your backup media of choice. If you don't have a backup, now's a good time to start.

Solve : Should I switch to 64bit??

Answer»

My laptop (dv6647cl) came with a 32bit OS but I wanted to see if it's possible to run a 64bit OS on it. I checked with HP support and they gave me conflicting answers on it.

Here are my system specs:

System Model: HP PAVILION dv6500 Notebook PC
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor TK-55 (2 CPUs), ~1.8GHz
Memory: 2048MB RAM
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 7150M / nForce 630M

Would I get any better performance from my computer by switching to 64bit?Most if not all hardware from the last five years should support 64 bit, so hardware shouldn't be a problem. Some software might not support it HOWEVER. Go over the PROGRAMS you intend to use and do a search for it.Quote from: foxhound on June 28, 2010, 02:26:27 PM

NoMS recommends at least 4 GB of RAM for a 64 bit OS.I don't see a benefit of using a 64 bit OS (as of now)IMO, NO!
You only have 2GB of memory.Apparently my response was too ambiguous Thanks for the response guys. Fortunately, I'll be upgrading the ram soon( 4GB max ). I really do a lot of multitasking, hopefully 64bit will be of some use. Quote from: foxhound on June 28, 2010, 03:47:17 PM

Probably not. What do you mean probably not?

Surely there is a lot to gain by switching to 64bit. I may have issues with drivers/software but I'm sure there are workarounds for it.You will probably see a bigger performance increase in upgrading to 4 GB of RAM than upgrading to a 64 bit OS. Depending on how and where you buy your software, probably cheaper too. With Crysis' 32-bit executable I get about ~40fps on High settings. with the 64-bit executable I get a near constant 60fps.

If the software is written well to take advantage of 64-bit it will go faster. However, you can't run any 64-bit executable if you don't have a 64-bit OS. Also, since Windows x64 and it's many components are 64-bit executables and libraries they will largely run faster.

Windows x64 doesn't take any more memory then the 32-bit versions. As I've noted previously, the fact that handles take 64-bits rather the 32-bit is hardly even relevant. Many folks claim that the only reason to ever use a 64-bit OS is to access more the 3.5GB~ of RAM, but this is utter nonsense. you can access up to 32GB of RAM (or maybe it was 64, it was a lot, anyway) with Windows Server 2003, which is a 32-bit OS. But Windows Vista/7 x64 is both cheaper and still "in service" so to speak. Also, a 64-bit processor has the ability to handle 64-bit instructions, which have register sizes that are twice as large. This helps many games, which often use 64-bit data types (for some reason) which take 2-4 instructions to process on a 32-bit processor but only one on a 64-bit processor.

Also, many people would have you think that 32-bit programs run slower on a 64-bit OPERATING System. This is true for the Itanium processor, but with any consumer-oriented 64-bit system this is not true. the AMDX64 architecture in common use runs 32-bit code natively; the only "emulation layer" required is the WoW (Windows on Windows) set of libraries, which, like the 16-bit version of the same name that ran on 32-bit systems, is more designed so that you can do things like copy and paste and perform other operations between tasks; the actual instructions still run natively without any sort of "translation" by either the OS or the processor.

Either way, 2GB is PRETTY much the bottom rung for either the 32-bit or the x64 version of Vista or windows 7; Wether you stay with 32-bit or move to x64 is largely irrelevant because most of your speed is stifled by constant disk swapping. Therefore, as rthompson says, you would probably find a larger speed increase by adding more RAM.

On the other hand, upgrading to windows x64 shouldn't cost a dime. All windows licenses apply to both the x64 as well as the 32-bit version of the OS, from what I understand.Quote

Can't believe you said that.

It takes 8 bytes instead of 4. Each handle takes twice as much memory. but that pales in comparison to what the pointers are pointing AT which are almost always much larger blocks of memory regardless of the size of the pointer.

Solve : DirectX problem?

Answer»

My monitor is showing flickering lines. When I play Age of Empires the flickering CONTINUES and, after a while, the AOE screen disappears and is replaced by a black rectangle at the top left of the screen. Pressing the Windows BUTTON on the keyboard temporarily returns the AOE screen but the problem recurs a minute or so later.

This happened originally in January but I was able to fix it by DELETING a line in the registry and restarting the computer. Unfortunately I didn't KEEP a note of the line I deleted. I am assuming that Windows replaced the line when I REBOOTED. I should mention that in my attempts to fix the problem back in December I was able to determine that the problem related to DirectX 11 (I have Vista Business).

Solve : Windows Vista's disk cleanup not working?

Answer»

Hi, well today I was using disk cleanup, and it scanned for a long time. Then, the results showed up-and it SAID i could free up to 1.2 or something like that GB of memory on my hard drive. Well i thought thats weird because I only used disk cleanup 2-3 weeks ago, and usually in that time i get no more than 200 MB of space that can be freed. I looked through the checklist, and found that 1.0GB or something close to that is taken by "Hibernation Files". Most of the other files don't take much. Well, i remembered that I HAVE done hibernation in the last 2 weeks, but not more than 2 times- and both of those were because my battery was almost dead so it automatically hibernated.(its a laptop)Now I ticked all the boxes in disk cleanup, and clicked delete or something dont REMEMBER what.It CLEANED surprisingly fast.(10-20 SECONDS!!) Hmm, i thought that was strange, so not waiting i scanned it again. And it came up with "You can free up to 1 GB". So, 200 MB or something like that got deleted, which probably were the internet explorer files, and now only the hibernation files are left. I tried only ticking the hibernation files, cleaned but when scanned again it still said there was around one GB of hibernation files. How can I manually delete the hibernation files or why isn't disk cleanup doing the job? How can i fix it? Thanks for any help.Just delete the hiberfil.sys file in the root of c: driveHey can you give me the exact path? I can't seem to find it..You can't delete hiberfil.sys file in Vista.
You can remove that file by turning off hibernation: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/10/25/how-to-turn-off-and-disable-hibernation-in-windows-vista/Sorry - your are correct of course Broni - missed the Vista part.No problem

Solve : IPv6?

Answer»

Here is my problem, I have a desktop running Windows 7 home premium 64bit and a Samsung N140 netbook running Windows 7 home premium 32bit.
I set up a homegroup on the desktop and attempted to join it with the netbook so I COULD share the USB printer, after entering the password from the desktop homegroup into the netbook set up it says it cannot join.
So I read SEVERAL how-to's on various forums and found out that on the desktop IPv6 was disabled, but it has a tick in the box for it under properties and the only option is to install or uninstall, no enable option.
Am I missing the obvious, or is this a common problem.
Any help will be much appreciatedAre you FOLLOWING instructions like these?
http://www.home-network-help.com/disable-ipv6.htmlI have followed various instructions over two days, enabling SERVICES, registry alterations, and then I find after e-mailing Belkin that my router does not support IPv6 although it is only 6 months old.In the end I did it the old fashioned way through a Network and no problems, but It has TAUGHT me something new. Thanks for posting back

Solve : Crackly sound with online video playback?

Answer»

Hi
I'm inherited a dell inspiron 9400 laptop with 1gb Ram running Wondows vista, and i'm trying to get it running smoothly but running into loads of problems.

The most annoying one at the minute is video playback when trying to watch streaming videos and movies online. The files buffer REALLY quickly and seem to play ok but the SOUND is really choppy and crackly. If I scroll down so the video is still playing but not on the screen the sound is fine, but of course i can't watch anything.

I've run ccleaner and superantispyware but another thing is that I can't seem to update superantispyware.

Another annoyance is - I can't boot past the welcome screen without hitting ctr-alt-del

I know, one thing at a time.

I have another laptop running perfectly ok on the same internet connection so the speed my broadband shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for any advice or help you can offer me on this

CheersYou may want to try PRESSING CTRL-SHIFT-ESC and then looking at processes running whilst trying to play videos.
You may be running to much RAM especially if your running a web-browser like Firefox. They can be hogs when it comes to memory.. see what is taking up memory and work from there.Might be your audio card lacking performance. I remember having the same problem on my old Dell.

If you lower the volume, do you still get a CRACKLING sound? Try DIFFERENT volume levels and see if the problem persists.Quote from: DivineRage002 on June 28, 2010, 02:15:37 PM

If you lower the volume, do you still get a crackling sound? Try different volume levels and see if the problem persists.

One thinks not. It's nothing to do with volume, it never is. It's how your computer deals with sound with the available RAM.
As always my opinion is limited but my support is sincere.you might also want to check that you have the latest drivers for your sound card. it may help. Even though MS says Vista will run with 1 GB of RAM, I think the general consensus of users is that you need at least 2 GB.Thanks all

Sound card is external, pretty decent usb tascam so shouldnt be any worries there.
I'm pretty much resigned to the fact that it must be ram too. But why would they make and sell such a system?? How could dell sell a product that you can't even watch online videos with?

byeI had the same problem.
What I did is
1. open Control Panel
2. click on Hardware and sound
3. Click on Manage audio devices
4. Click on speakers
5. Click on Properties
6. Click on the Enhancements tab near the top of the window
7. Click on the Disable all sound effects check box
8. Click Apply
9. Click on OK
10. Click OK again
11. Clos Control Panel
12. Play a file
Good luckQuote from: mckiernan on June 29, 2010, 03:15:59 AM

I would be willing to bet the machine started out life with XP and somebody upgraded the OS.Hi,

Thanks for the comment rthompson, but the vista is the laptop's original os.

Carlos Medrano, tried that but to with no joy. I'm using an external usb soundcard so speakers shouldn't be a problem.

It seems like ram but I'm sure there are people out there running vista on 1gb and able to watch videos & movies online.

If there is a video playing, such as youtube, It cackles and stutters but when i scroll down or minimise the page the sound is fine. Some sort of video card/ram problem?

THanks againHow much memerry does your video card has? Quote from: Carlos Medrano on June 30, 2010, 07:26:47 AM

1. Click the start button
2. type system imfermation in the serch box
3. click system imfermation in the left pain
4. Expand components
5. click on display
6. look for adapter ram it should be thereI've plugged out my usb sound card and it seems to have sorted out the online video problem.

Solve : Win7-Computer shuts down and loses ALL memory?

Answer»

I have a Sony VGN-AW190U Laptop, running Windows 7. It came with Vista, but we installed 7 (the full version with license) in November when the computer crashed. Two weeks ago or so, Windows did an update, and when it restarted, everything was all wonky, my files were in a different place, some were missing, ITUNES was GONE, along with all of my music and videos. Some of my document for work were gone, etc. I had to set up Mozilla Thunderbird for my email again, and then when I shut the computer down and restarted it, it was like anything I had done was gone. I had to do it again.

The other thing that happens is that sometimes the computer won't even restart at all. It gets to the welcome screen and just waits and waits. It did that for thirty minutes before I got it to start today. I can't imagine what is wrong this time. I am running Avast Virus protection on it, and do not FIND any viruses. I also thought maybe I COULD restore to a previous DATE, before the update, but there aren't any restore points, it is like they were wiped out too.

Please, any advice will be appreciated!!!

Thank you so much!

Windows 7 doesn't have a welcome screen.... that's XP...When Windows is first starting, the screen is blue and it says "welcome" before it loads the windows icons....that is where it locks up. I don't know if I am using the correct terminology. But I double checked to make sure it hadn't reverted back to another form of Windows, because to be honest, I wouldn't be surprised at this point. But it says it is running Windows 7.

Solve : Mouse lag?

Answer»

OK. Just a few thoughts. They break down roughly into 2 categories

Human factors - psychology - it is a common human trait to refuse to believe unwelcome facts - that effort or time invested was wasted, e.g. this cool mouse that I spent three hours (!) choosing [for its appearance?] may be faulty. Or, I refuse to believe that this super pretty chick that I spent 3 weeks chasing might be dishonest, even though my bank ACCOUNT is now empty and my car is gone. Another human trait is what I call "hardware death denial SYNDROME". You usually find it with hard drives. "It can't be broken! There must be a magic software fix or some settings that need twiddling or - Hey! Reinstall the driver!". Yet another is "past performance syndrome" - "it worked OK for N days/weeks/months/years so why WOULD it fail now?" - Grandpa lived OK for 99 years so why would he DIE now?

Practical matters - I really hate wireless mice. They tend to go to sleep to conserve battery life and need to be woken up, either by a movement or sometimes by clicking a button. The RF link can be problematical. I have bought 2 and each time gone back to wired mice. The fact that it seems to be satisfactory in safe mode (when the driver isn't loaded) makes me wonder if you have some kind of setting enabled to do with time-before-sleep or similar. Or the RF receiver could be overloading the USB port, or the port or USB chipset could be faulty or marginal. We do not know your motherboard brand or model. Or if plugging the RF receiver into a powered hub puts things right. Or a different USB port. Or if you have recently added USB devices. Personally, I would get a $10 wired mouse and see if that worked how I wanted. If it did, I would conclude that something or other in the wireless mouse setup was dodgy.

I will note that we have had very little in the way of description of the problem. Just that there is a "lag", whatever that means. Do you mean that the mouse pointer on the screen does not move straight away when you move the mouse? Or that it is jerky? Or what? This is really not called for....Im not here to troll, im here for help. . . Im obviously not going to get any.Quote from: oneano on July 05, 2010, 09:04:51 AM

Solve : Windows 7 Speech Recognition (with Office 2003)?

Answer»

Hi everybody. I recently purchased a NEW HP Pavilion Elite 210 and it came with Windows 7 Home installed. So far everything has worked well. However, I'm using the Microsoft Office that was installed on my older computer, which is Office 2003. I want to use the Windows 7 speech recognition tool, but it does not seem to be working correctly for me.

I have successfully completed "Set up my microphone", "improve voice recognition", and the TUTORIAL. Everything worked fine, the computer understood me and completed all my commands inside the tutorial. However, when I went to use it in Microsoft Word 2003, the speech recognition BAR will show what I said, but it will not insert my words into Microsoft Word 2003. I began to think maybe there was a compatibility issue. However, the speech tool doesn't seem to work properly outside of Office programs either. For example, I should be able to say "Open Wordpad" and the Windows 7 edition of Wordpad, should open. However, instead I will just see the words "open wordpad" in the speech bar. In addition, after using my mouse to open wordpad, I'll try to dictate. Again, the same thing happens and what I dictate appears in the speech bar, but is not inserted into the program.

I'm really confused. My first idea that it was a compatibility problem may still be correct. However, if that was the case, wouldn't it work fine when I use in outside of Office 2003 situations? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Again, I have a:
HP Pavilion Elite 210
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium
Microsoft Office 2003

I apologize if I left out important information, if any other INFO is needed please respond and I will attempt to provide it. Thanks again.opps, sorry. I forgot to include some information. This may not be helpful, but better safe than sorry, RIGHT?

When you right click on the speech bar, a menu appears. Under the "options" tab there are 4 available selections:
--Play audible Feedback
--Rum at start-up
--Speak text in correction dialog
--Enable dictations scratchpad

I currently have the 1st and 4th options selected only. At one point I unclicked the last option (about the scratchpad) but it didn't seem to make a difference.

Thanks again!!!

Solve : Random slowness + issues?

Answer»

So I have WINDOWS Vista and a Dell ... Inspiron530s but I bought it about 2 years ago. At first it wasn't so slow, but recently it's occasionally gotten as slow as the computer which we owned for 6 or 7 years at that time. We use Spybot search and destroy and spyware doctor and both aren't finding anything serious. What actually happens is this.. just a few symptoms

-an online game i play doesn't load up (its java) and then it says not responding and I have to resort to unplugging it or powering down and restarting computer

-ms word and other programs randomly won't COME up (the ms word loadup screen appeared and then stayed that way, same happened to spybot search and destroy)

- interenet comes up very slow and navigation isn't very good

-some programs suddenly stop responding

And other THINGS LIKE this... I have no idea what the problem could be to be honest but if there's any typical solutions without paying someone it'd be greatly APPRECIATED When's the last time you did the housekeeping on that machine ? ?
Run Disk Cleanup from Control Panel...
Then defrag...let it finish...
Then re-boot and from a command prompt run chkdsk /r...
Let us know...all that stuff had been done

wait no the cmd part i cant do it because it says i dont have sufficient privliedges, but what does it doIt checks your HDD for errors...have someone log you on as Admin...

I have a Toshiba laptop, maybe 4 months old, running firefox on windows 7.I just booted up and I get the MESSAGE; Firefox is having trouble recovering your windows and tabs with 2 boxes to check: restore or start NEW session, neither of which helps. When I click on the icon for firefox, I get Yahoo to come on for about 2 seconds and then it's GONE. This happens no matter which box I check. What can I do to get back to the internet? What happens when you open IE?It works fine on IE.Then I suggest you reinstall Firefox.

Solve : Batch File Help D:?

Answer»

I need to write a batch file that CHECKS to see if a process is running, and then either kill it or close itself depending on if it is running.

Not just once though, say I have 10 Firefox's up, I would want it to close one, and then check, close, check, etc. until they are all closed, and then close itself.

Even though I don't know the actual commands and how the errorlevels read, I would think it would look something like this:

@echo off
:START
check firefox.exe
if ERRORLEVEL ==2 goto END
if errorlevel ==1 goto KILL
:KILL
taskkill /f /im firefox.exe
goto START
:END

Any suggestions are appreciated!taskill /f /im [imagename] kills all instances of imagename. So you would only need to run it once.

Code: [Select]@echo off
REM start 10 notepads
echo Starting 10 notepads...
for /L %%N in (1,1,10) do start /MIN "" "notepad"

echo Press a key to stop them all...
pause>nul

REM kill them all
taskkill /f /im "notepad.exe"

Code: [Select]Starting 10 notepads...
Press a key to stop them all...
SUCCESS: The process "notepad.exe" with PID 2208 has been terminated.
SUCCESS: The process "notepad.exe" with PID 1308 has been terminated.

SUCCESS: The process "notepad.exe" with PID 3528 has been terminated.
SUCCESS: The process "notepad.exe" with PID 1340 has been terminated.:O! You're right, I forgot it did it for all instances, but still.. say I wanted it to check to see if an .exe is running, and then open it if it isn't? Kinda the opposite, but I kinda wanna know how it works both ways. Code: [Select]tasklist /fi "imagename eq notepad.exe" /fi "status eq running" | find "No tasks are running which match the specified CRITERIA">nul
if %errorlevel% equ 0 start notepad.exe

Gunna go give it a whirl!

Edit: It opened another even if the first is still running. D:

It doesn't on my computer. If you run it and notepad is already running it does nothing, just exits.

I have vista 64-bit, and it checks if notepad is running, but whether it is or not, it says "there are no tasks running that meet the criteria." or similar. Are you sure you copied it CORRECTLY? Are you usng the CORRECT image name?

Solve : Computer extremely unresponsive after crash?

Answer»

I am using a Toshiba laptop and it crashed and gave a blue screen and after about 3 days have been slowly making PROGRESS recovering files using LIVECD's creating recovery discs and have finally got it to boot into windows, but in all safe modes and normal mode the computer is very unresponsive taking a very long time to log in and once loaded about 5mins just to load the start menu! so it is unusable, when i run SLAX (an operating system that boots of USB) it runs smoothly and i cannot restore the computer as i have no restore points and NONE of the options work, i created a recovery CD and the only option i have is to re-install windows but i need a Licence Key to do so, but i have lost it (has rubbed off the bottom of the laptop) so all i plan to do is use magicaljellybean key finder to find the key from the registry and re-install windows but cant as it is so slow, what is CAUSING this!

when windows is loading i will hear loading sounds from the HDD, but a repeated loading sound over and over again.

i really need help now, thankyou for your time.Run a virus scan and see what happens Do you have the receipt from when you purchased the laptop, as to prove you paid for the version of windows? If you have or not take it back to the place you purchased from and ask them to help.
If you did not get a CD with the laptop the recovery may be hidden on a partition on the HDD.
When booting press F8 repeatedly on start up before the Windows logo appears.

Go to ADVANCE Boot options

and then see if there is Repair your computer

If that does not exist then pls come back and we can try something else.

Solve : increasing the size of scanned picture?

Answer»

I am scanning a PAN Card which CONTAINS a PICTURE and text. How can I enlarge the contents so that I can SEND it via mail. I had simply scanned and sent it but to no avail. Plz, help me out.....Copy the contents to an empty directory and then use whatever editing tools are needed....SAVE the resized files with a new name.hi Sanrishra,
if you mean the actual size not the pixels, then it is fairly simple. Copy the scanned item into an editing programme such as picassa or windows word, crop out any unecessarry areas, borders ETC. click on the scanned image and drag it out from one corner until it is the correct size. then save it in a new name and copy it to your email as an attachment.
cheers,
babs

Solve : Windows Backup -- Various Failures?

Answer»

I am having a problem with one of my clients computers that I can not figure out.

Windows Backup is continuously failing.
(If you know of software that works just as well, for free, I think switching over may be worthwhile if the fix is not simple)

Two errors have occurred:
Catastrophic Failure -- a very general error.
After we changed the backup destination to a blank CD instead, this CAME up after "Preparing for backup" :
Incorrect Function 0x8007001

I have already taken the following actions:
Ran the following: sfc /SCANNOW, scandisk (or whatever the kids call it now), did a computer and registry clean out with CCleaner (I do that to all computers).
Entered the Computer Manager, changed the service to "Automatic" and started it, restarted the computer, and it still did not work.

SPECS:

Windows Vista. All updated installed. Whatever the latest SP for Vista is.
Dell. Antivirus installed and running (Avast).

I swear, I may kill if anyone gives me a LINK to lmgtfy... I already tried to find a descent solution that actually worked.

Thank you for your assistance in the matter
- Jesse ZylstraJesse great to see you again Bud...

I recently tried /tested3 or 4 Free backup solutions and out of them all Macrium Reflect came out way on top...
You may want to take it around the block for a spin...

seeya. The problem, well, actually it's not really a problem...
The case is: The person who uses this computer only has about 1.19GB of data total in their Pictures and Documents folder -- which is all that needs backing up.

What about software specifically made for backing up only certain directories? It just needs to be automated. The ability to automatically PUT it onto a blank CD (after prompting the user for a blank CD, of course) would also be very nice.

I'm considering getting one of those aimable wifi things and pointing it to my house and selling disk space on my server to him for backup.. It certainly sounds much easier!
