Solve : Windows endless updates?

Answer»

I USUALLY update windows when I receive them via my auto update. The last update had an extensive list of RATHER large updates which included
.NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 7.5 mb
.NET Framework 4 Client Profile 45.8 mb
Windows Application Compatibility Update 3.8 mb.
and a few other thing dealing with Media Player.
After some RESEARCH, I am wondering if I need these updates. They sound very invasive and my computer is working great so I am hesitant to install these scary sounding updates. Do I need these THINGS?
Thanks in advance.
DMy XP has been doing a lot of .NET Framework updates, too. Another one popped up just now!! If you have System Restore enabled, let it do the updates; you can always roll them back.

Since these are off their normal 2nd Tuesday of the month schedule, they must be important.

This one did not require Restart. Those updates got me on my last nerv.
What happend is that my CD drive wood not be Seend by Windows.
if that ever happens to you RUN this tool for it could fix it.

Solve : Win XP .gif view to Win7??

Answer»

I was really sad when I saw that the Windows7 dose not support .gif VIEW, so I did a lite search and found you can open it with your browser or get Infraview, so I did some more search on if you can import the XP gif view to Win7 but didn't find anything.

So can you get the old Win XP .gif view into Win7? Also, do anyone know why they removed it?Windows Photo viewer still OPENS GIF files perfectly fine...You can open them but you can't watch them.Anyone?Quote from: Frejoh466 on July 01, 2010, 12:29:09 AM

You can open them but you can't watch them.
.gif files are normally just still images. Are you talking about an ANIMATED .gif? If so, you'll NEED a third-party software such as Infraview.

UMM, what is "the old Win XP .gif view". Windows XP had no tool to view animated .gif files. If you're saying it does, then what is the software you're talking about?
Ok, someone can close this, at this time I know none of you guys can help me.How about answering the questions in my previous post?

Solve : Bsod studio.exe fault??

Answer»

Hi, I have a computer running on Windows 7 with Intel Core i7 CPU, 6144MB of RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4600 Series Graphics card, and a 300gb hard drive, plus an added terabyte hard drive.

It has been crashing with a Management BSOD for a while now, and I ran WindDbg to TRY and figure it out. (I'm pasting the Windbg INFO at the bottom)
It seems that Pinnacle Studio is the problem, but I have redownloaded a couple times and it still crashes whenever I run it. (Although it works in safe mode)

Any ideas how I can get this to stop crashing?

Here's the crash dump.

It looks like you MAY have RAM issue.

A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try starting computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check listed above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look SOMETHING like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Solve : Can't open My Document folder-Win 7?

Answer»

My Acer laptop came with WINDOWS 7. My last computers are all with XP. My biggest surprise is my access to My Documents is denied, even though I am the only user, and presumably the administrator. What's the solution to that?Quote from: paulpingpong on July 22, 2010, 07:09:05 PM

My Acer laptop came with Windows 7. My last computers are all with XP. My biggest surprise is my access to My Documents is denied, even though I am the only user, and presumably the administrator. What's the solution to that?

So your saying you cannot access 'my documents'? This seems a little strange. Maybe a language barrier.Starting with Vista, the word "My" was removed from all of the personal folders for each user. In other words, XP's "My Documents" became Vista's "Documents." However, some programs were written to actually look for the words "My Documents" rather than a variable, which makes them scream bloody murder when installed in Vista. The workaround Microsoft implemented was to create JUNCTION points, which would allow the program to see the name it was used to and then route it to the correct PATH (a translator, if you will).

Windows 7 confuses things even further. Because of the addition of libraries, and the fact that it uses the name "Documents," the real "Documents" folder was given the alias "My Documents." Although it appears that Windows 7 went back to XP's naming convention, it really uses Vista's.

My guess is that you're double-clicking the junction point "My Documents," and getting the "Access denied" message. This is normal, as the junction point is not a real path--it's a way to get old programs to see the RIGHT spot when it's used to the XP way of things.

What you need to do is get to it by one of these methods:

a) The Start Menu, method 1:
Start -> your user name. Then click My Documents (this is an alias for the Documents folder).

NOTE: Start -> Documents won't get you to where you want to go. Start -> Documents is the library, not the folder.

b) From "Computer"
C:\Users\your username\My Documents (again, this is an alias--right-click the folder, go to Properties, and then click the Location tab to confirm this).Problem solved. I have to change the ownership from the default "Systems" to me in Properties. Thanks. No problem. Ownership was going to be my next suggestion.

What is your current antivirus that quarantined the file? and how many antivirus do you have INSTALLED? Do you have an anti-malware, spyware?I have trend micro antivirus plus antispyware thats my only antivirus its anti virus and anti spywareUnfortunately not all anti-spyware cleans everything. Some AV+AS links/website OFFER free download only to find out that later it could damage your system registry. Did AV+AS came with your computer or downloaded? Latest AVG antivirus + antispyware have much better fix and protection. Can you still BOOT to desktop?i bought my computer with it i bought it as a disk yes i can still boot to desktop only thing is an error message shows up saying that .dll file is missing which is in quarantine at the moment i tried cleaning it but my antivirus told me to wait until i have an update that can clean that virus so that i can restore the file back to its original location

I used to be pretty good with DOS but cannot remember what this means. I would appreciate your help.

something is a variable ( a LOCATION in RAM). A VALUE is stored at that location. 153 for example, could be stored there.

echo %something% will display the value 153.

RAM is Random Access Memory. All values stored in RAM, disappear when the MACHINE is shut down. IBM REFERS to RAM as working memory. The HDD ( Hard DISK Drive stores information while the machine runs and while the machine is shut down.

X is a variable. %X% extracts the value stored at X.

Not sure how that could be unless they have the exact same motherboard (or, at the very least, hard disk controller). Unless, of course, you were just looking for whether or not the computer could read the hard drive's data, rather than whether or not it can boot to the operating system installed on that hard drive?

Quote
so now I'm running out of ideas please help

I'm going to assume that the drive's data is accessible, but the operating system is damaged to the point where Startup Repair can't fix it.

Time for CHKDSK. Boot to the Windows 7 DVD like you did when you RAN Startup Repair, but this time, go to the command prompt, type in the following, and press Enter:

chkdsk c: /r

After CHKDSK finishes, look at the number of bad sectors it found. If that number isNOT zero (0), then you've got a failing hard drive. Do what you did to get the drive working on your friend's computer, and copy the data off of it before you lose it permanently!

Otherwise, if the number is 0, then the drive is likely fine, but you still need to do something about your jacked-up operating system. Do what you did to get the drive working on your friend's computer and copy the data off the drive. Or better yet, just install Windows 7 on that new drive you mentioned.-yea i tried another hard drive in my computer (just plugged it in the IDE port) and booted off of the and it got into windows and everything.. worked fine

-I'm not sure what you mean in "unless you had the exact same mother boared" i just plugged it in and it worked fine no problems...

-no error messages so far at all... when i used the windows 7 disk to restore it said restore done successfully and same thing with the fixing boot option in the windows 7 disk said it was all fine and still no dice

-running the disk check now thanks a lot for helping

OK i did the disk check and it said 0 in the bad sectors area.... anymore suggestions?Quote from: juicebox on July 20, 2010, 11:13:05 PM
-yea i tried another hard drive in my computer (just plugged it in the IDE port) and booted off of the and it got into windows and everything.. worked fine

You're still not telling me everything. Did you have BOTH the old AND the new drive connected when you did this or did you have ONLY the new drive connected? If you only had the new drive connected, then I don't see how your computer WOULD even start up! It has to find an operating system somewhere!

Quote
-I'm not sure what you mean in "unless you had the exact same mother boared" i just plugged it in and it worked fine no problems...

Then it sounds to me like you had both the old and the new plugged in.

You're troubleshooting this all wrong. If the problem is your old drive, leaving your old drive plugged in is not going to fix the problem. However...I can think of one scenario in which all of these conditions apply:

1) Plug in old drive only, won't boot.
2) Plug in new drive only, won't boot.
3) Plug in old and new drive, boots up fine.

In this scenario, your operating system's BCD database is all jacked up--meaning that BCD and BOOTMGR are on one drive, but yet it's pointing to the GUID of the other, so your computer will only start up with BOTH drives connected.

There's an easy way, a "work-if-you're-lucky" way, and a hard way to fix this.

Easy way: Back up your data, wipe, and format. Make sure ONLY ONE drive is connected while you format and reinstall Windows 7. Otherwise, this may happen again (BCD on one drive, the OS partition on another).

Work-if-you're-lucky way: Connect ONLY the boot drive to your computer, and boot from the Windows 7 DVD. Run the Repair My Computer wizard like you did last time. Hopefully, a working BCD will be restored to the proper location...

Hard way: Try to move the System/Boot partition and the BCD database to the C drive. Good luck with that one...sorry i wasn't very clear.... OK so my computer works if ANYOTHER hard drive is plugged into it... but it doesn't work if my hard drive is plugged in to my computer (the one I'm having problems with) but if i plug my hard drive into SOMEONE Else's computer it works fine.. so the only way my computer wont boot is if i have my hard drive in it but i know the hard drive boots because i have plugged it into another computer and it boots with no problems.....

so how would i go about moving the System/Boot partition and the BCD database to the C drive?or is there any good recovery programs that could fix my boot?and btw i have already tried both using the wizard on the windows 7 disk to fix my boot and also used system restore via the windows disk but still nothing Hard drives since WinME are not able to just be "swapped" from one machine to the next and expected to work properly as Windows "ties" the install performed to the current hardware the machine has...so you either got lucky trying it this way or the machines may have been similiar.
In a nutshell this approach is doomed to fail.

Slave Drive Tutorial

The above will allow you to retrieve any important data...

Then do a full wipe and a clean install of whatever flavors of Windows you plan to use.Thank yous for the help i reformatted and all seems to be going well... and it odd about the swapping hard drive thing cause i tried 2 different hard drive in my computer which booted fine :S one was similar to my computer but the other one was running xp and it booted fine

but anyways its all working again

Solve : Missing Volume Icon in Taskbar?

Answer»

For whatever reason, the Volume Icon in the Taskbar was missing when I booted up my Windows 7, 64 bit, yesterday. I looked in the Sound area of the Control Panel and there was nothing there that would help, then I posed a generalized question regarding missing sound icons in my Search Engine and found that the Icon for Sound was residing in the Clock in the Task Bar??? Who would have figured that one? Anyway, I right clicked on the Clock and clicked on Properties and there it was. However, I couldn't turn it back on as it was "GREYED" out. Have any of you run into this problem and solution? Thankshave you tried restoring the icons to default behavior? or turning the icon back on? what seems to be your problem?

1) no icon, no sound?

2) no icon and sound?

this is the way i was talking about restoring to default. first rt. click the program bar like you did. then go to turn system icons on/off. then select restore to default behaviors. hope this helpsThis is quite a common problem first of all have you tried restarting the pc.

If that doesn't help then you could try these steps.
1. Back up the Registry by creating a restore point.
2. Go to Start > Run (or Windows-key + R), type in regedit and hit OK.
3. Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \TrayNotify.
4. Delete the values IconStreams and PastIconsStream.
5. Open up the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Processes tab, select explorer.exe and click End Process.
6. Click New Task at the top-left of the window.
7. In the message box that pops up type in explorer.exe and hit OK.
8. Explorer.exe will RELOAD, and the missing icons should now be back in the system-tray where they belong.
9. Then if the volume bar isnt there, go to taskbar properties (where the volume was gray) and simply tick the box.
Well, a thunderstorm solved the problem for me. We lost power and when power was restored and I booted up my computer, the Sound Icon was right where it was supposed to be. Thanks to both of you for your replies. I should have tried rebooting BEFORE I went looking for help. Duh!!!Thank God for thunderboomers......

Solve : what is this program.exe that hacks up the CPU??

Answer»

My computer is somewhat slow today and I go to check the taskmanager and I see this program.exe listed and the description says Microsoft Seaport Search Engine. It was using 88 or so % of CPU.

Anybody know what this is???

I never seen this before, just happened today.Remove Microsoft SeaPort Search Enhancemet
Microsoft SeaPort Search Enhancemet is installed with Windows Live and some find that it slows down their computer significantly. To remove this enhancement, you can do the following:

Click Start.
Click Run.
Type: cmd
Hit the Enter Key.
Type: sc delete SeaPort
Reboot the computer.

Let me know if this solves your problem.I disagree with this statement while it is true that some computers are slowed by this, it is not necessary to remove the offending program, disabling serves the same job via the MSCONFIG interface.I ran my AV tool and it cleaned up some stuff and it's all OK again.good DEAL. thanks for posting BACK with good results. And NEVER use msconfig to make permantent changes to startup items.Quote from: Allan on July 26, 2010, 03:10:05 PM

Use whatever you like, but please don't suggest that others do the same on the forum.alright, but why say that msconfig is bad to use to make permanent changes to start-up programs? Yes, i do know that selecting the wrong programs can mess you system up, and I'm thinking right now that i just answered my own question.msconfig is a diagnostic / TROUBLESHOOTING utility. It is not intended to be used to do simple housekeeping chores. There are any number of good, very simple utilities for changing startup items - not the least of which is Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. Very true, i will refrain from posting that from now onGood news indeed...
Feel FREE to suggest Startup CPL from now on instead...

Solve : Windows-7 and internet connection?

Answer»

Sirs/ Friends,

I have Intel Core 2 Duo PC -E7500 2.93 GZ - 2GB RAM purchased last month and is installed with Windows 7 OS.
The LAN card for networking is Realtek PCI GBE Family Controller 811*..

MTNL, Mumbai (INDIA) is my service provider and I have a telephone line and router provided by MTNL.

The problem I am facing is -

Every time I put on the PC, I have to reinstall the setup file for netconnection provided by Win7. And while the PC and net connection is on and I do not use the connection for some time (say 20 minutes appx) and attend to MS office etc, my connection gets disabled and I have to again reinstall/repair.

Even this has not been useful for the last 2 days. Despite my best try to uninstall the driver, reinstall it etc.
All the four lights in the router are glowing and the PC shows "that the network driver is installed correctly.

When I try to troubleshoot, after running various tests, it says that "It could not identify the problem".

The engineer who provided me the equipment etc., is out of station and I have a desire to solve this of my own (for future knowledge) with the help of friends and Advisors in this forum.

ps. - The same router, connection and LAN card is working perfectly okay in Windows XP and it is through the XP(SP3) that I am sending this message.

Any guidance/ advice will be appreciated.

Thanks and regards.

RKR[I have vista so cannot give you the perfect path to what I am suggesting but hopefully will be similar.
Go into control panel and find device manager. Locate network adapters click on it. Check there are no yellow triangles with an exclamation mark in, if not then follow these instructions.
Click on the plus sign to open network adapters and locate the problematic hardware. Right click on this and choose Uninstall but DO NOT delete. Then when it is uninstalled reboot the COMPUTER, this should force the computer on restart to re-install the drivers.
Please try and get BACK to me if it does or does not work.Sir (Mr. Mulreay),

It is nice of you for the guidance provided. Luckily for the last 2 days the net connection is functioning fine (by reinstalling). So, when it next goes off, I shall follow your advice and carry out the instructions. Then I shall come back and report to you about the outcome.

Kindly await further communication from me.

Meanwhile, Thanks and regards,

I hard booted the computer because it refused to respond, upon next boot it prompted to run CHKDSK. CHKDSK has ran sucessfully before, but when I left the computer on overnight to let it do it's thing, I woke up a good 10 hours later to find it was stuck at 99 percent.

After it refused to show any sign of completion, I hard booted it again and ran CHKDSK. Now it has locked up completely - again - while checking my computer's free space.

I need this laptop for SCHOOL in a month, and I am at the end of my rope. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and would go a long way to ensure that said laptop doesn't end up as a pile of broken plastic and silicon after contact with my bedroom wall.

Thanks in advance.

~Zer0Go to START - RUN and TYPE: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, reboot, and let it finish.Ok, rebooted, went to load Windows normally, and typed that into the run screen. I had what looked like a command prompt window open for about a quarter of a second before it DISAPPEARED. Did this three times, same result. Then after about two minutes Vista locked up completely and I had to hard boot it again.Okay, sorry. Do this. Open a command prompt as admin and in the command prompt box type chkdsk /r and then as above.

Solve : Computer often freezes?

Answer»

I have several problems that may or may not be related.
My PC is an HP 8200 Media Center,
500gb hd, 3 gb mem

The PC had Vista pre-installed; I recently upgraded to Win 7, the problems began after the upgrade

Problem #1- The pc freezes,in order to get it working, i have to do a hard SHUTDOWN, i have had to do this repeatedly, i hope that i have not done too much damage to my hd. I have lost work a few times as a result of this.

Problem # 2 - The pc randomly will show a blue screen that mentions a memory dump

Problem # 3 - I have the pc connected to a 32" TV/monitor,sometimes the signal is lost between them, i bought a new cable but the problem still randomly occurs

Can someone please give me some ideas??

THANKS in advance You should start by going to HP support and installing the win7 drivers as needed for your model and operating system. (chipset being very important)

Then ADDRESS drivers for add on devices such as cards and such. Add on Graphics cards are important to update for win7.

If you NEED more advice please feel free to ask.Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Settings. UNCHECK "automatically restart". Next time there's an error the blue screen should remain up - post the entire contents of that screen here.

After installing W7, did you indeed install the correct drivers?

Once everything is straightened out you'll want to run chkdsk /r on the system drive to repair all the lost clusters you are causing with the hard shutdowns, but we'll worry about that later.Sorry to have taken so long to reply, i have been ill. I am ready to try your suggestions, i will let you know what happens
thanks again It may be video card overheating.

Let's see, what causes your BSODs...

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)
No installation required.
Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program.
When scanning is done, go Edit>Select All.
Go File>Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Solve : Strange screensaver behavior?

Answer»

I have a NEW, freshly built system, running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
In the past, when I've used a screensaver, the desktop is blanked and only the screensaver runs, against a black background.
With this system the screensaver activates, but the desktop is still displayed, ie the screensaver is applied over the desktop and I can see both. This sort of cancels out the point of having a screensaver.
The system is a Gigabyte GA-790XTA-UD4 motherboard, 4GB RAM, with an XFX ATI Radeon 4550 PCIe graphics card. I've updated the Gigabyte BIOS to the latest version (F3).
Everything is new and Windows was a fresh, full install on a new BLANK hard drive.

I'm a bit puzzled.Depends what Screensaver you have selected... some screensavers don't blank out the desktop image- for example, there were a few included in windows 95/98 that applied various distortions to the screen. Windows 7's "bubbles" screensaver I believe does something similiar. (draws above the desktop).

Quote

This sort of cancels out the point of having a screensaver.

Actually, there hasn't been a "point" to having a screensaver for nearly 20 years. Thanks for that.
I am USING the "Bubbles" screensaver. I suppose I should have checked by using one of the others (like the blank screen).
I've always understood that even with LCD screens there is still a risk of screen marking if they are left displaying a high contrast image for long periods.
Plus I don't always want people to see what I'm working on if a leave my DESK for a while.

Best regards,
Brian

You say you downloaded it. May I assume you then installed it or are you saying nothing happens when you try to install it? If the latter, try downloading again from a different location.

Don't apologize to the guy. Computer error messages need to be quoted exactly. Nearly won't do. If he can't get that idea in his head this thread is going nowhere. Spinning out threads with changing versions of error messages can begin to smell a bit troll-like. Not saying it is here (yet).
Part of the problem is most people don't generally deal with computer problems. So for most they think that close enough is good enough. Most people that have dealt with problems such as these clearly know that this is not the case. HOPEFULLY this gets resolved and he posts ALL of the error message.

Solve : unallocated space !!!! (windows 7)?

Answer»

hi,

i have a problem, i have shrink my c drive (win7) drive to create an new partition of 50gb
but this partition cannot be viewed on "my computer" but the same can be view on 'diskmgmt.msc' (attached)
now how can i use that unallocated space ?

can anybody help on this pls.....

[recovering disk space - old attachment deleted by admin]Is this a backup/partition of Win 7 itself? If so I don't think you can use/access it.You need to learn how partitions WORK. You are only allowed 4 primary partitions or 3 primary partitions & 1 extended partition. You already seem to have used the second type. Try making it a logical drive instead of a primary one. If that doesn't work you'll have to delete one of your partitions to create them the proper way.Quote from: drivenbywhat on July 30, 2010, 05:26:56 PM

Lets pretend they don't know what there doing.hi,

thx for your help, actually i have extended that 50gb back to my c drive now....

can u pls help me to create a new partition now ... i need to add 50gb to the partition where i have installed ubuntu..I don't like to extract information from a person. With that said make sure any follow up replies include the necessary & clarified information or don't expect a reply from me.

Do you WANT to ADD that 50gb to the linux partition or do you want to CREATE another partition in that 50gb? Both your posts conflict. You say one thing in one and another thing in the other.

As I said before, you currently have 3 primary partitions & 1 extended partition. The extended being backup (d). I said you can either have 4 primary partitions or 3 primary & 1 extended. By adding that 50gb to c you haven't changed anything for your partition situation. You are still where you were before.

I don't make a habit of extending & shrinking partitions. With that said why didn't you use those 50gb to EXTEND the linux partition? I'm going to assume you tried but got an error message? I think you can only shrink or extend partitions that are next to each other so you couldn't extend your linux partition with the 50gb because the windows partition was in between?

Is your linux partition very important to you? If not delete it. Then you can shrink your windows partition like before to have 50gb of unallocated space. You will now be ABLE to create that 50gb partition because you will have 2 primary partitions & 1 extended, leaving room for 1 more primary.

Also, do you know what that 118mb partition is? Did you create it or was it there when you installed windows? Chances are that if you have a pc from dell or hp then that partition is a recovery tools partition. You can delete this instead of the linux partition & be able to create that 50gb partition you want. However, I caution you that deleting this partition can possibly leave you UNABLE to boot to any OS if it holds the boot record. So if you're not sure what it has in it and you don't know how to recover it if you delete it then I suggest you leave it alone.

How can I fix this?

Assuming you want it to ask for your password again, delete your cookies. Don't worry, although it might not seem that way, your account is still password protected.

It is that way by design. The login is mainly for sending & receiving mail. Once you setup your account the first TIME and it PULLS your mail in, that mail will be viewable whenever you open windows live mail whether you login or not. If you just hit cancel you will see that mail but you will not be able to get new mail or SEND new mail. Get it? Windows live mail is assuming you have permission to open that account because it was created in your windows profile account. So it's not going to stop you from seeing emails that are already in it. If you login to windows with another profile account you shouldn't see your email from your other windows profile account. If you did then I would be worried. It has to do with "profiles" only insomuch as different profiles are going to have different cookies.

Solve : Vista Black Screen of Death?

Answer»

Bear with me as I'm not the most knowledgeable when it comes to these things and I truly appreciate any help that can be offered.

The issue is with my sister's laptop and I've been unable to get anywhere with it. First, it is a Sony VAIO that was purchased new from Best Buy and is just under a year and a half old but as far as I've been told, the warranty was one year. She is pretty much incapable of having done anything to it as far as screwing with any configuration. She's a college student and uses it for word, internet and email and thats about it.

She turned it on and windows would not load, the screen came up as a windows error and gave her the two choices of start windows normally or repair. Either choice leads to a black screen, sometimes with a movable mouse cursor, sometimes just black. Any amount of time waited has not resulted in anything further. This is still how it is when turned on now.

We can access F2 and we can hit F8. We seem to be able to do anything we would need to when we hit F2 but thats not much help. However if we choose ANY of the choices from F8, we then go to a black screen, and again no amount of waiting gets us further so using any of the safe mode options, command prompt, last working configuration, none of them are really even accessible.

Through my own research we found out about creating an ISO disk for Vista recovery and tried to boot from the disk as the computer did not come with and actual disk. The prompt to press a key to boot from disk comes up, and then is followed by "windows is loading files" and a status bar. After that completes, the microsoft corporation and the colored meter at the bottom pops up but no vista logo above it. Then it goes to a black screen again and the mouse cursor comes up a minute or 2 later. This has happened about 95% of the time and stayed there. On 3 occasions, the screen then turned to the blue background that would be the beginning of the install screen. 2 of the times it just stayed blue and did not go any further. One time the screen LOADED with the options of install or repair. We chose repair and then chose the language options and then the box popped up asking to select the operating system to repair, and the cursor turned to an hourglass. These SCREENS came up over the course of a half hour, not minutes. However, after leaving that final screen up for 2 hours, the hourglass never disappeared and the operating system did not pop up and we gave up. Only that one time did it get that far.

So basically, thats where we stand. I'm not sure if this is a lost cause at this point because we really can't do anything as far as I can tell. The latest thing we tried was a full vista disk to see if the repair would work from that but we were unable to even get where we got that one time with the burned ISO disk. I don't even see how we could accomplish a fresh install if we wanted to.

If anyone can offer any advice whatsoever, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
RonIt seems to me that the Vista OS needs to be reloaded. Since you have not provided the model of Vaio I can not research if it may have a restore command to reload the operating system with a command at boot up. I did look up that some Vaio's can restore with holding alt + F10 at boot and it will start the factory restore process. If you do this it will completely wipe the hard drive of all personal files, pictures, documents and such and programs loaded after it was purchased will be gone.

If you have not backed up these personal files and need them you may want to seek help by posting that info here and asking for ways to get it accomplished.

You will need to do all windows updates once this restore process is finished and I suggest you get Antivirus and Malware protection ASAP. We do have suggestions for free Antivirus and Malware programs if needed.

Please feel free to ask any questions about this before making a decision. Thanks for the response. The model number is PCG7153L. The computer had Norton 360 installed and up to date.

That restore command feature is something that we will certainly have to consider if its available for this model. Ideally of course we'd like to be able to salvage the personal stuff that was there which was mainly photos and school related papers, etc. as it was not backed up. However depending upon the degree of difficulty of what options there are to accomplish that, we may opt to forgo that. We would of course like to know what possibilities exist there if you or anyone else can provide them.

The main thing we wanted to know is if the computer was a complete lost cause or if it could be salvaged either with or without saving what was on it. If that restore command will work, then thats the first answer. It seems to me you have no option at this time to boot into windows and save the personal files so you will need to access the hard drive with a boot cd or remove the hard drive and install it in a external drive case and the recover files from a working computer by copying them.

Laptops need a 2.5 inch either SATA or IDE compatible external drive case depending what your system uses.

The option to boot and save files http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

I suggest you get files recovered and then try the restore command and if it does not work then you will need to order restore disks from Sony.

*TIP* Always be ready for a computer crash by backing up personal files to another hard drive internal/external or online storage. Some infections and corrupt windows issues can cause complete crashes and recovering the files then costs you un-needed time you could spend installing windows as new.

You can always wait for others suggestions before making a decision.I just had this problem recently. So unfortunately it sounds like the hard drive is dead, and you need a new one. Though there are a couple of things you can do to check this. Under the f8 options there is a "don't automatically restart upon failure" there you can actually see which blue screen error you are getting. Another thing you can do is check if you can actually read the hard drive by taking it out and connecting it to another computer.

Solve : Restore computer back to factory setting or 64 bit windows vista?

Answer»

I was trying to restore my Gateway computer back to original factory settings by using the internal reboot f8 option, but I accidentally shut the computer down while it was reformatting and then I just couldn't get back to that option of rebooting the computer. Therefore, I DECIDED to use the operating system disc that Gateway gave to me when I first purchased this product, and it worked. But, the only problem is I just can't SEEM to get the 64 bit VERSION of windows vista despite the fact that I clicked that I want the 64 bit version. I tried reinstalling the operating system 3 times clicking the 64 bit version all 3 times and yet I STILL get a 32 bit windows vista. How can I fix this? And, can I still somehow restore the computer back to original factory settings even though I reinstalled the operating system? This may seem a stupid QUESTION as my restore is on a partition so I have never seen the disk. What does it say on the boot disk? Does it say Vista 64bit on there? Or just 32?

What does that mean?Well, I figured it out. The router went bad and was only acting as a switch--it was allowing only one ip address in from the isp instead of assigning LAN ip addresses. That's twice now I have worked on a pc and something unrelated went wrong right after.

Thanks anyway

Solve : show pointer location?

Answer»

Anyone know if it's possible to change the color of the circles for the "show location of pointer" option in the mouse properties? If your talking of the 'ctrl' show pointer I don't think you can, not that I have seen (but maybe not SURE). It also seems a very random thing to change.Yes, that's the thing I'm wanting to change. I also completely agree that it's a very random thing to change.
It would also be a very helpful thing to change in my case. I have a WORKSTATION that has 56" of screen REAL estate (TWO 30" monitors). Finding the mouse pointer is a very difficult task at times, so I turned on the ctrl show pointer option to help. It's still a minor struggle to find the gray circles around the pointer. One could argue that changing the trails of your pointer to high and then running the mouse/touchpad around would solve the issue, but certainly not a PERFECT solution.

I have checked on the original issue and can find nothing 'trustworthy'.I've done a couple runs through of the registry for key words, but nothing seemed to fit, either.

Solve : Freeze/BSOD 0x00000116 Windows Vista?

If it comes to replacing video card, you won't need that wire at all.
You'll remove a metal plate, which covers the access to the card's "*censored*" and the card will have its own VGA slot, which will be sticking out through a hole in the back of your computer. But the wire isn't connected to the vga slot. Its connected to something on the motherboardYou know, I'm not sure here.
I'm not really a hardware guy and even if I was, I can't know every computer model.
This is some rather unusual setup.
Without really seeing it in person, it's hard to advice.
You may need to get an identical card...

In any case, try to remove it and put it back.
That's the first step, no matter what.Even a picture here doesn't show me connections:

Alright thanksSure thing Hey Broni, I was going to search to see if there was anything to help for taking out the card, but while I was searching my screen went black, and seconds LATER it said there was no vga input. I CHECKED if everything was connected. (they were) Does this mean that my GRAPHICS card is officially dead?
I am CURRENTLY on my older computerIt's getting more likely so.
Still, try to re-seat it.Oh wells, I bought a new graphics card today and installed it sucessfully

Thanks for all your help Broni!!
If problems start to appear again, I'll be back to haunt you.

It doesn't? Is this so? Not being able to Open The theme dialog, which is part of Windows Vista (I'm assuming this is what they mean by "properties->theme" since there is absolutely nothing even close in Vistaglazz) , has nothing to do with Vista? Alrighty then.

Seriously, the Original Poster is going to have to fill in a LOT of information.

Nothing as in it doesn't work, there's an error when you try, it shows up but it's blank, it doesn't show up at all, the LISTVIEW containing the VARIOUS theme choices are blank, etc.?

Solve : Unable to delete file and folders?

Answer»

I am USING windows vista and created or rather converted some video from flv format to a dvd mpg format using Any Video Converter. I was logged in with an administrator account but now I am unable to delete the folder that the application created. I've tried logging through the administrator account and same problem occurs.

I've tried taking ownership of the folder and files and get the access denied statement. I have also tried deleting through DOS the directory and folder and files created by Any Video Converter same access denied message.

When I check the USER account rights the file/folder full control with special permissions is checked.
What am I doing WRONG or what else is there for me to do in order to delete these files.Download, and install Unlocker: http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
Restart computer.
It'll install under right click menu.

Open Windows Explorer.
Navigate to offending folder/file.

Right click on a folder/file. Click Unlocker
Select Delete from drop-down menu:

Click OK.
A folder/file will refuse to be deleted, but Unlocker will give you an option to delete on reboot:

Click Yes.
Restart computer.

==============================================================

If the above doesn't work, try...

LockHunter: http://lockhunter.com/

FileASSASSIN: http://www.snapfiles.com/get/fileassassin.html
another thing, you can also try booting to safe mode and try deleting there. Thanks for all the assistance but it seems that re-booting was the issue, once I re-booted I was able to delete with no problems, strange if you ask me.

Thanks againprobably the files were in use by the 'parent' program or process. That's usually what I see as when something is safe to delete but is locked and therefore undeletable as a result.

Solve : Volume Control Problem?

But when I turn down the volume for WMP only it doesn't work, so I have to listen to the music really loud or else I won't hear my friend on Skype. And you don't THINK it's rude to have music playing on your system while speaking with someone via Skype? Solve : The colors on the screen are not the same that print.?

Answer»

I use mircrosoft office home and STUDENT 2007 with vista. I have a Dell computer and a canon printer. The colors I choose in my programs are not the colors that print. For example: my son is a scooby doo fanatic. I printed some things out for him and scooby came out bright pink. Grays come out lavendar, yellow is orange, green is brown........It is absolutely driving me crazy! I have spent hours and taking dozens of tips and much advice and NOTHING anyone tells me is working. I bought refurbished ink cartridges, went out and bought BRAND new and they are all the same......I am ready to pull my hair out. I have things to print that require color for a class at school. I can't keep BUGGING my NEIGHBOR for her computer!
It seems to me you need to try another printer on your comp and see if it's related to your comp or the printer. And/Or try your printer on another comp and see if it prints ok.

narrow down the possibilities.

Solve : Rough Gradients?

Sorry for the dumb questions( I have very few knowledge of hardware STUFF )...But I don't know how to connect my monitor to laptop..and I don't think I can..(I don't see the VGA port on it).......
And I think my monitor has the problem PROBABLY...Any Alternate or other way??Some laptops don't have a vga outlet. Why don't you tell US what make and model it is? I already asked you this about your desktop, video card and monitor but you have not told us.
Ok The Monitor is HANNspree BOSTON W19.The Desktop ( or CPU ) is Dell Inspiron.
Graphics Card is Nvidia GeForce 310 which has a 512 MB Memory. Is this enough?
And let me remind you again, with the same monitor I have used 7 and XP Before. But After I bought a New CPU, and when then I connected the monitor cable to it, this problem started.I asked about the laptop.
Oh Laptop? I dont remember it.But hey, it has no vga outlet and I am sure about it.So what do you think has the problem? The desktop computer video SETTINGS or the monitor or the desktop display card. You appear to have eliminated the first two.

So What can I do next?Contact the vendor of your new desktop computer and tell them it does not work properly and that you wish to exercise the warranty.

Solve : Can't download Windows Live?

Answer»

Recently I have been having PROBLEMS with windows messenger. OS is windows 7. Windows messenger will not open, it says Problem with windows messenger trying to fix the problem and it never does. Anyway i uninstalled messenger and reinstalled it. it worked for all of 2 MINUTES then jumped into the problem box again. So I uninstalled it again this time when i go to the download page it will not let me install windows LIVE because it says I already have it.This SEEMS to be a common problem with Windows 7. There also seems to be no quick fix. It may be worth waiting for Microsoft to pull there fingers out.Ok that explains that. I still need to FIND out how to dowload windows live. Its telling me I have all of Windows Live programs on the installation page but I don't.
Check all your programs closer, I can see it on my win7, you just have to expand programs to see them all.

Solve : odd partition on hard drive?

Answer»

My mother in law installed Windows 7 on an HP laptop (Vista was ORIGINALLY on there). There is a partition on the hard drive a little over 1 Gigabyte in SIZE, not being used by her. At first glance it appears that nothing is in it, but enabling hidden files to show up revelaed some operating system files in it.. I don't recall exactly what they were... $RecyclingBin and Some other file... I didn't want to delete the partition because I didn't want to mess up the Windows installation.. Does Windows 7 create this partition when being installed, for some reason ? I haven't any of the Windows 7 release documents. I know some Linux OSes create temporary partitions on the drive when being installed..No, Windows 7 does not create any partitions or install any "hidden files" on a separate partition. That was probably a recovery partition created by HP for the original Vista installation.hm, ok thanksSure.Quote from: Allan on August 02, 2010, 07:15:35 AM

No, Windows 7 does not create any partitions or install any "hidden files" on a separate partition. That was probably a recovery partition created by HP for the original Vista installation.
That notion occurred to me but 1GB does not seem correct for a recovery partition. On my Compaq laptop, which came with Windows Vista, the recovery partition is about 6.5GB.yes the laptop does have a separate recovery partition roughy 7 Gigabytes as you discribed. If it's not from Win 7, what is it ? Maybe I should have called this thread "The Phantom Menace"

I would do some googling on this, but I'm at my wit's end with this DIAL-up connection... I feel like over 50 percent of the time I sit in this chair I'm waiting for pages to download, it's far worse when encrypted sites are visited. It sucks going from dsl to dial up... We are moving tomorrow where we will have dsl again

You said the computer originally came with Vista. So, that recovery partition would be for the original configuration of the computer with Windows Vista.

And, why are you now acknowledging a recovery paritition of "roughy 7 Gigabytes"? You previously said "There is a partition on the hard drive a little over 1 Gigabyte in Size". Quote
If it's not from Win 7, what is it ?

I was reffering to the 1 Gig partition when I said this..
Sorry about the confusion...

There are three partitions on the drive.. The Active Partition C:\, the recovery partition (7 Gig), and the mystery 1 Gigabyte partition, which has hidden operating system files in it..What are the files in this partition?
I'm wondering if it is a boot partition. SEEMS pretty big for a boot partition, but I've seen some pretty large boot partitions before when os upgrades were involved.
In the 1 Gigabyte mystery partition, as I put it, there are only two files/folders... I'll try to get them and post back, I don't remember off hand what they were...

Solve : Vista 64 bit keeps freezing and programs keep not responding?

Answer»

Hi there. My Toshiba Portege Windows vista 64 bit keeps freezing and programs keep not responding. It just started happening two days ago. I've scanned for viruses using avira and MALWARE bytes, and nothing came up. I've also tried cleaning the registry with registry easy and it did, but nothing changed, and lastly I did a system restore to before this crap started happening and it still freezed and programs keep not responding. I need some help please. Using a registry cleaner will only compound your problems. Please, NEVER use a registry cleaner again.

Boot to safe MODE. Does the system freeze there? What happened just befor the problem arose (new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?I downloaded debut video capture software from the nchsoftware website, and SHORTLY after that this problem arose, the program would freeze as it was downloadng this codecs or something for the program, and then this problem arose. Sometimes windows freezes right away and sometimes after an hour. Also everytime I start my computer now it says something about daemon TOOLS error? I never remember downloading daemon tools.
So far my computer hasn't frozen in safe mode, although it has only been a few minutes. Google chrome doesn't work in safe mode but mozzilla firefox does. If the system doesn't freeze in safe mode it's probably something that's loading with your system. Open msconfig and choose "selective startup" (disable everything from loading) and reboot. Does the system still freeze? If it does, we'll have to look elsewhere, but if it doesn't, start adding startup items back one or two at a time in msconfig, rebooting each time, until the problem recurs and let's see which process is causing the problem.

BTW, the fact that this happened WHILE downloading something is a little suspicious. I'm concerned about malware even though you said your scans were NEGATIVE. But let's see what happens with the clean boot process above first.

And I'll be logging off shortly but I'm sure someone else will jump in to help. I'll be sure to check back in the morning to see how things are going.Okay so It hasn't frozen yet. Right now I have added 2 items to the start up in msconfig, and restarted. Just waiting to see if it's going to freeze. So far so good. onto 5 and 6. Just have a question, when should I enable the services? Because they are all disabled.Quote from: omarandbear on August 05, 2010, 04:59:10 PM

Solve : Win Vista home: copy & paste comes and goes?

Okay, Auto Fill is still not working.

Thanks for the Norton link - I was unable to find that. Now maybe I can ask some questions there.

I really appreciate all of the replies. Dixieflash

Auto fill generally runs off a master password.. is there a section in Norton that allows you to VIEW this.. sorry it's been a while but I know there is a master password.. possibly check your browser for Norton settings.I agree with lostcoast here re: the fact that Norton is far less then it once was. That being said, I've never actually been one of their customers so can only relate to the many horror stories that I've heard from friends/relatives/neighbors about it. Either way, this back and forth "Norton sucks", "does not" "Does to!" "Does not!" isn't really constructive regardless.

EDIT: curse all you, now my reply is 5 posts too late...

Quote
Seems like every time Norton Security downloads then auto-restarts, I can't copy say from Comcast email and paste to a Word Pad file.

When you say "Comcast email" is this a special client program that installed by your ISP, or are you accessing it via another browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc). If the latter, you could try another browser. If the former, it might be that you need to restart after an update because Norton hasn't properly closed it's Clipboard viewer hook chain which therefore busts pretty much all the other installed clipboard viewers, essentially rendering copy-paste inoperative.

If possible if you can find a way to do a complete "restart" of Norton (that is, all it's processes are stopped and restarted) then the clipboard viewer chain hook registered to Norton will no longer point to a loaded module and windows may automatically remove that particular item from the chain. I know this is the way it often works with other hooks, I have no reason not to believe it's the same for clipboard hooks as well.

Well, Comcast made a very positive move. She just accepted what Comcast issued.

By the way, dixieflash, you could, if you so choose, uninstall Norton and still use some other anti-virus or another internet security package. But, if Norton is working OK for you now, you might WANT to stick with it. I really haven't followed developments with Norton in recent years but I'm willing to give some credence to Allan's comments about the fall and rise (the coming back in recent years) of Norton.

On another note, unfortunately, this discussion provides no clue about why or how the issues have mysteriously corrected themselves.

I may or may not agree with you and I will not state here. But this kind of conversation should be carried out in the malware section of the forum. Then we can get some sage advice not just personal beliefs.
We risk giving conflicting (and dangerous) advice doing this here. That is why the Malware/virus experts exist. And there section. One thinks you have taken my comment personal which makes the thread even more poignant. I'm not saying you are wrong and in fact you could ask a well known member I was on your side for quite a while.
I have no idea why you have taken offence but you seem to be carrying on this issue. The OP and everyone apart from you has laid it to bed as in 'OK no problem'. 'At risk of giving advice' and 'giving fact' are two completely different things.
I may be out of turn and If I am, I truly apologise.. but I don't get your problem. Iam slightly distracted as I'm watching the sky's tonight for the British Aurora.

I just did some research myself, seems that the 2010 version has advanced by leaps and bounds. My experience with the pre-installed version of Norton 360 on my laptop was not particularly awe-inspiring. It tried to display a "YOU MUST REGISTER THIS PRODUCT" type of dialog every time I started the PC (and, it made the window on freaking top so I couldn't do anything else, either).

All Anti-Virus programs miss infections. I just cleaned my brothers PC a few hours ago that had AVG and it only found maybe a tenth of what was actually on there. malewarebytes, reboot, poof, it's clean. I was going to switch him to Avast! (he only installed AVG because he saw me using it many years ago), but he wouldn't let me. (he's one of those, "If I can use it, it's fine" type PEOPLE).

ALL Anti-virus programs are resource hogs. (compared to your average app) They use CPU time every time you access a file, they use memory all the time, etc. It pretty much comes with the territory, because they have a of data to compare and sort and so forth.

What makes this sort of thing sad is that the only reason there is any argument at all is simply because the OP happened to mention the AV they used. The problem is pretty much largely unrelated to the actual choice of AV to begin with, and the fact that cut/copy/paste stopped working was only slightly related. The "automatic password" thing was probably simply that they didn't enter their master password, so that was the AV/Suite working properly.

I imagine that the Cut/Copy/Paste returned at some point after the update, because the module responsible for monitoring the clipboard polls it's hook status every few minutes, so a few minutes after it started it found that it's hook was no longer installed and reinstalled it, which restored the clipboard view chain. Yes, the windows clipboard is a very odd ENTITY when it comes to hooks and views and their interactions.

Solve : Archived mail?

Answer»

I would like to copy my archived mail from aol, gmail and yahoo onto a flash drive. Is there any way to do this?

This is not really a win7/vista issue, please PAY attention to what heading you post in.aol, gmail and yahoo are all webmail services, right? In other words, your MESSAGES are stored on a web server or mail server somewhere, not on your computer. So, there's no way to backup your messages on a flash drive. If you want to do that, then you need to use an EMAIL client (Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Thunderbird, etc.), which is software installed on your computer and used to download messages to your hard drive. Gmail can be setup to work with an email client. Getting mail this way is called POP mail. [POP stands for Post Office Protocol.] The free Yahoo! Mail service can not be enabled to work with a POP email client, and I do not believe aol can either. So, of the three email services you mentioned, only gmail can be enabled to work with a POP email client.

You might also LOOK into using an email account PROVIDED by your ISP, since such accounts can usually be POP-enabled.

While it was circling I pressed and held space and f11 buttons it took to some MENU where I didn't know how to navigate and what to do. Now I can't get to that menu again. I'm not that GOOD with computers. Please help. Are you sure this Restore CD is for that MODEL Sony ? ?

I was trying to do restore on my laptop when in the middle of the process all of a sudden I get this message, "windows could not complete the installation to install Windows on this computer, restart the installation. When I click OK or I close that message Even if you shut down the laptop and turn it on again you can't break the circle it goes on and on.
While it was circling I pressed and held space and f11. Now I can't get to that menu again. I'm not that good with computers. Please help.

This is a truly epic fail, but as we think, it's maybe a 'proper' fail, can you start in safe mode? Probably not but can you atleast get some info from the bios start? Any info is useful.

Solve : help with win7 , please?

Answer»

is there anywhere i can go to read or see a video about win7 , because i may take it out and go back to XP its easy to use there are LOTS of videos on youtube about windows 7, though I'm not sure exactly what you want. Do you need guides on how to use it? How it compares to XP? Tips and tricks for Win7? All these kind of videos are on youtube, so just search for windows 7 and browse until you find what you need. If there is a particular thing about Win 7 you are having difficulties with, we may be able to help if you are more specific.

Good Luck.i upgraded my pc and got win7 i'm having trouble understanding it and i may go back to xpQuote from: harry 48 on August 06, 2010, 12:15:18 PM

Learning a new operating system is always fussy. I used to use XP before I used Vista, an I thought '*CENSORED* you Vista for not being easy' then I realised it was far more VALUABLE to switch to a new OS and learn the basics.
Now I wonder why I ever got stressed with Vista as it is 'very easy'.
I would suggest just use it and have a look around, you can't break it with what you ALREADY know.

I agree. I went from XP to Windows 7 and I'll never go back. Actually before I changed machines I used VMWare Converter to turn my old XP installation into a virtual machine and I now have it on my new machine as a VM. It seems so clunky, and well, nine years old in look and FEEL.

That's a very good idea, Trout. I may do the same when I bother to upgrade to 7.

Solve : Full page on start up?

Answer»

My wife's COMPUTER at her business boots up in full screen which she doesn't like. Being an XP guy and unfamiliar with Vista, how can I keep this from happening? It's a pain having to go to the tools menu and unchecking the full screen box after every boot. What do you mean exactly by "full screen"?The Address bar is hidden and has to be cursored to get it to drop down. It gets cursed every now and then too. Do you mean that when she logs in it starts a program? WINDOWS Explorer for example?
I'm not trying to be SMART here but, you know the address bar that is usually at the top of the page where you type an URL? This is what's hidden. Also, if you click on the tools icon at the upper section of the page it has options. One of the options is full screen and is always checked hence hiding the address bar or box as some may call it. I'm sure you were not trying to be smart. When Windows starts up normally, by default, you just get a desktop with a taskbar at the bottom. That's it. Your wifes computer evidently has a program starting up as well, I guess it could be Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer, both of which have an address bar at the top. You need to tell me (us) what this program is. Or give us a clue. Like is it the program for USING the web, or the one for working with documents that are on her computer? And what happens if she or you un-check that full screen option?

EDIT - I reckon that "Tools" menu you spoke of means that she has Internet Explorer 7 or 8 running at startup. If you either:

--- go to the Tools menu and uncheck the Full Screen option

OR

--- press the F11 key to bring it out of full screen

and then use it, it should come up NEXT time not in full screen.

So you're talking about Internet Explorer starting in full screen mode? The F11 key toggles full screen. Thanks for the responses and I know of the solutions you've mentioned. The problem is, even after unchecking the full screen box or clicking on F11 it still boots up with the full screen checkbox rechecked. I tried looking through the start up check list to see if I could find where it may be checked as a default situation but no luck. What is current browser and version? It's a fairly new computer and think it's IE8 but would have to check. I know I've went to IE8 on our home computer and think hers came with IE8. As I said in an earlier post in this topic that not working with Vista very much seemed to be the hangup for me. Although, both XP and Vista have the full screen checkbox in the tools section.Try this: get it out of full screen mode, then hold down the Ctrl key and at the same time close Internet Explorer.

Ok. Follow first Salmon's Post. If nothing still changes. Try removing current browser(IE8) by going to Control Panel. After removing, just download a new IE8 and install and see what comes up then. Will do, thanks for the responses.

Solve : Bad Links in Start Menu?

Answer»

Brand new Acer Aspire 5251-1513, Windows 7

When I click on the Start Menu, Getting Started>Tasks(8 choices, including Discover Windows 7, Back up your files ), every choice links to a window with this address: Computer>Acer(C:)> Windows>SYSTEM32 . All the other links in Start seem to go to the right applications.

Acer Help is telling me to pay them to fix this. Isn't it a defect(or sabotage?) in this copy of Windows? Is it fixable by me? I'm no expert, but I can follow step by step instructions.

This is returnable in the next 10 days, but otherwise it seems like it's fine for my uses, so I really don't want to.

Anybody KNOW of any other annoying "glitches" in this laptop?Well there are work-arounds for problems. Try this go to the CONTROL panel and select backup your computer. See if it lets you access the backup utility this way. Attached is what the window should look like if you infact get the utility to start up

[recovering disk space - OLD attachment deleted by admin]Great, that works. I can find some of the topics. The only one that isn't there that I'd like to find is the Discover Windows 7 tutorial. Not necessary, but I'd like to see it.It appears it's a simple matter of corrupt shortcuts. Just delete the shortcuts that don't work in the start menu and create new ones.I know how to put shortcuts on the desktop, but not on to a menu. If you can show me step by step that WOULD be great. Also how do I find the location these things are supposed to point to if they are not in the control panel?Feel free to create them on your desktop. Then right-click on the shortcut icon and drag it over the START button. The Start menu will open. Continue to drag the icon to the folder where you want it then release the right mouse button and choose "move here".Im pretty sure that these are the discover window 7 videos that you are looking for

Right clik an empty area of the Desktop and select Personalise...
Then on the bottom of the window that comes up click on "desktop backgrounds"I don't have WIN 7 Starter, but according to what I've READ, it doesn't support changing wallpaper the WAY higher versions do. Apparently, there are ways around this limitation. Search Google for something like "change wallpaper windows 7 starter" and see what you find.Hello, geek hoodlum

Ignore the posts of Allan and patio.

You can get the background changer here for free:
