Solve : Vista Help (Major) Needed. Autoshutoff, Restarting Issues?

Answer»

Hello.

OS - MIcrosoft Vista, Service Pack 2.

quadcore processor. Nvidea Geforce 8800GTS.

For some reason, I can't reboot my computer. Upon reboot, a blue screen of death appears each time with a new error code. I've run memory diagnostic and no errors came up.

It also shuts off after an hour or so for no reason when I do make it into the desktop. I make it to the desktop by shutting off the computer for roughly 20-30 minutes then rebooting it up.

Ive done a clean install of Windows Vista and still the errors persist.

I've run hmonitor to monitor the heat, the GPU is 80, CPU 100.

Ive already cleaned out the fans with dust remover, it helped slightly then didn't.

This happened about THREE weeks ago and has occured more rapidly (the shutdowns) over the past few days.

Using fanspeed, here are the results

Fan 1: 4021 RPM
fans 2: 2804
Fan3 :0 rpm

GPU 80c
TEMP 1 46c
TEMP 2 73c
TEMP 3 75 C
HD1 45C
HDQ 44c
TEMP1 65c
Core 0 87c
Core 1 84c

I need major help. Please, if anyone has any ideas of what to do let me know.The temps for your GPU/CPU that's fahrenheit, right? If not you have a severe problem with your cooling system fans. Also, have you tried to boot to safe mood?Nope, Celsius.

Safe Mode reboot works on occasion, but I'm not sure what to do when I get there. Most of the time when I try it the computer doesn't make it there and I get a blue screen and an error codeQuote

Core 0 87c
Core 1 84c
Is this a laptop?Desktop, sorry, should have said that.I wouldn't be using in this condition. You may be causing irreversible damage to your CPU.
What CPU is it?Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.40ghzYour processor max temp is listed at 60.3C: http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_2/Intel-Core%202%20Quad%20Q6600%20HH80562PH0568M%20%28BX80562Q6600%29.html, so your CPU is practically burning.Well that's not good... what's the quickest solution? Get a new fan installed?An extra fan should help, but you also may need to reapply thermal paste.Im guessing my computer has a spot for a third fan.. but I have no idea what thermal paste is.See here: http://www.arcticsilver.com/instructions.htmThanks Broni. So I guess just shut this down, get a new fan and some thermal paste, and HOPE for the best?Yeah, definitely, don't use it anymore.For a CPU to be running at that HOT, i don't think ambient temperature in the case is the problem. There MUST be virtually no contact between the CPU and hsf. It appears the fan on your processor is working (going by the speedfan readings) but it may be only working intermittently, which may be why you can boot on some occasions. You should leave the SIDE panel off your case, so you can be sure the fan is working and this will also help to lower temperatures until you find a permanent solution.

Get yourself some good quality thermal transfer compound and follow these brief instructions:
Remove power from computer.
Remove HSF by twisting the tabs at each corner of the fan.
Clean any old thermal compound off the top of the CPU CAREFULLY (don't spread it off the CPU onto the surrounding components) with a clean dry cloth. If there is still some remaining, you can use alcohol (not the drinkin' kind) to remove the remnants.
Place a SMALL dot of new thermal compound on the centre of the CPU. Remember - you only need a very small amount- usually around the size of a grain of rice.
Reinstall HSF. (the weight of the HSF should spread the dot of paste across the surface of the CPU evenly.)
Power-up and check your temps.

If you are STILL having high temps (and the fan is actually spinning), you may have a warped heat-sink, so you can replace this with an aftermarket HSF quite easily.

If you need further instruction, I'm sure there would be a guide on this website somewhere, or check my cpu-upgrade guide at my website.

Goodluck.

Solve : Paging Size?

Answer»

I'm running vista at the mo and just WONDERED if anyone could advice me on what my PAGING SIZE should be. I have 1GB of memory in total on my lappy.
PHYSICAL MEM
Total 952
Cachd 516
Free 21

KERNEL MEM
Total 134
Paged 96
Non Paged 37

I dont use my lappy for anything excessive, only for browsing and downloading. Any suggestions.There have been MANY theories on the best size to set your paging file over the years, the most popular probably being 1.5x your physical RAM (so 1.5GB in your case.) To be honest though, Vista is probably better at managing page file size than any person, so I suggest leaving vista to automatically manage your page file. Some people do prefer to have a set size, more to reduce disk fragmentation than to increase performance. In which case you can either go with the 1.5x theory or use window's built-in performace logs to find out how large a page-file windows is typically using and set the static size to a bit larger than that.Agreed. Just leave it as Windows Managed.

Solve : anyting i need to kno b4 buying w7?

Answer»

i just wanna kno before i upgrade from xp1) Know the specs of your computer, like RAM, CPU, etc. Failing that, know how old your computer is. If it's going on TEN years old or something, it's probably not a good idea to go to Windows 7.

2) Know if the programs you're running will actually work with Windows 7. Many do, many don't.

3) Know if you want to install 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 7. The main advantage of 64-bit is being able to use more than 4 GB of RAM in Windows without workarounds/hacks/etc. The disadvantage is that ALL of your hardware must have 64-bit drivers (scanners, printers, and whatnot). There is no direct upgrade path from XP To 7, so you'll have to do a clean install. Check the Windows 7 upgrade adviser before doing anything: http://windows.microsoft.com/upgradeadvisorYou should think about dual booting XP and win7. It has many advantages when it comes to games and software compatibility and such.

If you are a STUDENT you MAY be eligible for win7 ACADEMIC Licensed for $30.

Solve : toshiba vista laptop being really stupid at 'applying final configuration'?

Answer»

whatever. i guess we'll just have to call toshiba then. they will probably charge us through the nose for this, though..You need to run the test. And I'm deleting your other post.how do i run the test? i dont know how. enter doesnt do anything, there's nothing on the screen that says' run test', there's no mouse, the arrow keys dont do anything. what do i do here?I'm not sure if the diagnostic kicks in automatically or not. This may help: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic62524.htmlit didn't say anything about how to start the test. hm... maybe this means my ram IS broken.Your ram isn't broken. When you boot to the disc you created does the test begin?no, it doesn't begin. it says this:

you know what, ill just use the memory diagnostics that came with the toshiba recovery disc, since that one was MADE for this laptop.OKAY okay, i started the windows memory diagnostics tool, its running test pass 1 of 2, but at the bottom it says:

Windows will restart the computer automatically. Test results will be displayed again after you log on.

See, that's the problem- I can't log on. As soon as I try, the stupid Applying Final Configuration pops up and blanks the screen out and then i have to MANUALLY turn the laptop off and back on, so i can't see the results.@bearsafruit:

You're making this harder than it needs to be.

When you see the blue Memtest 86 screen, you don't have to do anything!!! It starts automatically!

Pay attention to the top of the Memtest 86 screen. It goes through a series of tests, and once the slower bar gets to 100%, it's gone through a "pass." If you see ANY red on the bottom of the screen, that means you have bad RAM. After about two passes or so, if you don't see any red, then your RAM should be good.to killerb: too late, i already started the windows memory diagnostics tool. but when i tried using that memtest, there was no bar at the top that WENT through tests. like i said, it showed and only showed this:

no, it doesn't begin. it says this:

i waited a few minutes, but it hadn't done anything, so i assumed it either didn't work on toshibas, or windows vista, or both. thanks for trying to help though.it's as i expected- the windows memory diagnostics tools finished, it rebooted vista, then showed the applying final config again and blanked out. i have no other option but to call toshiba.What Service Pack level is your Windows Vista Toshiba recovery disc at? If it's less than Service Pack 2, then have Toshiba send you updated discs...

Solve : usb to usb connection?

Answer»

hello i have a male to male usb connection and i would like to hook my computer to my stereo up with it as they both have usb connections but when i plug it in my stereo is saying no usb detected is there some sort of program i NEED to download for this to work ? any free ones? thanks for ur help in advance Check this site: http://www.ramelectronics.net/howto-pc-audio.ep#1that wasnt much help as i already have a usb connection that is both males...First off, we need more info. We're not psychic.

What's the model of your stereo?

I'm going to GO under the assumption that the USB ports on your stereo are for flash drives, IPODS, iPhones, MP3 players, etc, and not for PCs. Therefore, your computer is not going to detect your stereo or VICE versa. Quote from: brishuni on August 09, 2010, 09:07:08 PM

first of all you dont have to be rude about it so go *censored* urself
He was not rude.
Please read the documentation for your stereo.
We can not help you WITHOUT specific information.

Normally USB male to male is not how things are connected.
These special connectors are used by experimenters who fully understand what they are doing. Usually a conversation from RS232 to USB, which may have the wrong USB connector on some special devices.

Solve : changing CMOS configuration of installed OS from vista to windows 7?

Answer»

i had recently INSTALLED OS from vista upgraded to windows 7 but the problem is that the configured OS found in my laptop CMOS is still vista instead of windows 7.

so what will i do to change my CMOS configuration from vista to win7..

thank you..I really don't understand the problem. Could you please explain what you mean when you say "the OS found in your laptop CMOS"?There is no reason to need to change what the BIOS thinks is installed on your computer.
Unless you are having some other problem I would not worry what the BIOS thinks.Quote from: lonar23 on July 18, 2010, 05:06:50 AM

I think you're confusing your terminology here--like taking a laxative for a headache.

What you're looking for here is to default your boot LOADER to boot from Windows 7. Your CMOS has nothing to do with it (the CMOS is a battery on your motherboard that saves settings like the clock when your computer is unplugged from a power source).

It sounds like you didn't do the upgrade from Vista to 7 properly. If you installed 7 on top of Vista, then this can happen, as both operating SYSTEMS are now installed.

In any case, you've got a few options:

1) In Vista (or 7, whichever operating system you can get to), click Start, right-click "Computer", and left-click Properties.

2) Click "Advanced System Settings" on the left side of the screen.

3) Under "Startup and Recovery," click "Settings."

4) Select the operating system you want to start from. Change the timer to 0 seconds (unless you actually want a menu asking you to PICK every time you start your computer).

Now...if Windows 7 is not listed there, then you really didn't do it right. Start the upgrade install again, but this time, make sure Vista is up and running first. Click Start -> Computer. Double-click on the drive letter of your DVD-ROM drive and start the upgrade PROCESS from there.

The problem is that you started the "upgrade" by starting your computer (booting) directly from the Windows 7 DVD. That will not upgrade. That will install 7 either
a) on top of Vista
b) side-by-side with Vista (if you have another drive or partition to install it to)
c) in place of Vista...and everything else on your computer if you choose to format

There's a few caveats, of course:

1) You cannot do a cross-architecture upgrade. If your Vista is 32-bit and your 7 disc is 64-bit, no can do. You'll have to do a clean install.

2) You cannot upgrade to a "lesser" version of 7. For example, if you're running Vista Ultimate, you can't upgrade to any version of 7 lower than Ultimate. Period. thanks a lot killerbee...

No nothing that is 'too' much. Why would you need people to download straight off a URL can they not SEE a description or have an understanding of what they are downloading? Surely downloads should be as clear as day and not hide anything?

Quote from: yshua on August 09, 2010, 11:01:48 PM

Make the URL point to a file, first off.

Or, if you are using PHP, you can change the output header. This is the function I use for this:

Code: (php) [Select]function output_file($file, $NAME, $mime_type='')
{
/*
This function takes a path to a file to output ($file),
the filename that the browser will see ($name) and
the MIME type of the file ($mime_type, optional).

If you want to do something on download abort/finish,
register_shutdown_function('function_name');
*/
if(!is_readable($file)) die('File not found or inaccessible!' . $file);

$size = filesize($file);
$name = rawurldecode($name);

/* Figure out the MIME type (if not specified) */
$known_mime_types=array(
"pdf" => "application/pdf",
"TXT" => "text/plain",
"html" => "text/html",
"htm" => "text/html",
"exe" => "application/octet-stream",
"zip" => "application/zip",
"doc" => "application/msword",
"xls" => "application/vnd.ms-excel",
"ppt" => "application/vnd.ms-powerpoint",
"gif" => "image/gif",
"png" => "image/png",
"jpeg"=> "image/jpg",
"jpg" => "image/jpg",
"php" => "text/plain"
);

if($mime_type==''){
$file_extension = strtolower(substr(strrchr($file,"."),1));
if(array_key_exists($file_extension, $known_mime_types)){
$mime_type=$known_mime_types[$file_extension];
} else {
$mime_type="application/force-download";
};
};

@ob_end_clean(); //turn off output buffering to decrease cpu usage

// required for IE, otherwise Content-Disposition may be ignored
if(ini_get('zlib.output_compression'))
ini_set('zlib.output_compression', 'Off');

header('Content-Type: ' . $mime_type);
header('Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="'.$name.'"');
header("Content-Transfer-Encoding: binary");
header('Accept-Ranges: bytes');

/* The three lines below basically make the

header("Cache-control: private");
header('Pragma: private');
header("Expires: Mon, 26 Jul 1997 05:00:00 GMT");

// multipart-download and download resuming support
if(isset($_SERVER['HTTP_RANGE']))
{
list($a, $range) = explode("=",$_SERVER['HTTP_RANGE'],2);
list($range) = explode(",",$range,2);
list($range, $range_end) = explode("-", $range);
$range=intval($range);
if(!$range_end) {
$range_end=$size-1;
} else {
$range_end=intval($range_end);

$new_length = $range_end-$range+1;
header("HTTP/1.1 206 Partial Content");
header("Content-Length: $new_length");
header("Content-Range: bytes $range-$range_end/$size");
} else {
$new_length=$size;
header("Content-Length: ".$size);
}

/* output the file itself */
$chunksize = 1*(1024*1024); //you may want to change this
$bytes_send = 0;
if ($file = fopen($file, 'r'))
{
if(isset($_SERVER['HTTP_RANGE']))
fseek($file, $range);

while(!feof($file) &&
(!connection_aborted()) &&
($bytes_send<$new_length)
)
{
$buffer = fread($file, $chunksize);
print($buffer); //echo($buffer); // is also possible
flush();
$bytes_send += strlen($buffer);
}
fclose($file);
} else die('Error - can not open file.');

die();
}

/*********************************************
Example of use
**********************************************/

/*
Make sure script execution doesn't time out.
Set maximum execution time in seconds (0 means no limit).
set_time_limit(0);
$file_path='that_one_file.txt';
output_file($file_path, 'some file.txt', 'text/plain');
*/

Then you can cause the PHP to give back a "download" rather then an actual web page- the browser will prompt to download it.

If you are not using PHP or another Server Side Script, then you will almost certainly need to have the URL be complete and point to the file you want to be downloaded.

Solve : You Need Permission To Perform This Action??

Answer»

Hello,

I am currently trying to move a 18 GB Folder from one PC to Another both running Windows 7 64-Bit and when I TRY to move it from my laptop over to the other by going to Network and selecting the other computer and placing it in one of it's folders I have shared I get the MESSAGE You Need Permission To Perform This Action. I can place it in the MAIN area of the C: DRIVE where Program Files and Program Files (x86) is located however I don't want to place it there. If anyone can TELL me how to put folders and files wherever I want on that computer I would really appreciate it

Thanks!How did you share out the folder? Did you do it through Homegroups or did you do it the old fashioned way (right-click, Sharing, Advanced Sharing, assign permissions to the user account, and then the Security tab to assign permissions to the user account)?

If the old fashioned way, then you'll have to create the same user account on the destination PC.

Solve : i cant install the os help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

Quote from: ALLAN on August 11, 2010, 11:49:52 AM

Huh? Either the drive is working or it isn't. It's that simple.

I've had dirty CD DRIVES cause these errors before. They'll work for the most part, but when you try to install an OS they have trouble reading all of the data from the disk. I'd suggest that the OP try a laser lens cleaner as well as cleaning the disk, but I don't know how they'd get ONE of those to work WITHOUT an OS installed.

Solve : files?

Answer»

I have a folder on my portable hard drive named "my stuff" then inside that is a folder named "pictures" and when I CLICK on that the pics automatically show up. Now I deleted the pictures and replaced them with a animated gif w/sound that I took from the internet however when I dragged it into the "pictures" folder and open it I have to then click on a "e" icon to get it to play. How can I just click on the "pictures" folder and have it just automatically start playing? Is that possible?Try pointing the ARROW key to the folder and press right-click button. A certain software that usually opens up GIF pictures should appear such as the one you mention. If not, click option OPEN with and scroll/browse your certain software, highlight it and click OK. So everytime you use certain files, the software(media) file is already a PROMPT option for you. But usually, simultaneously playing all is a different issue here. Obviously you cannot play them all the same time. Its like saying i want to watch TWO movies from a hard drive and open them with a media player such as VLC. Anyway you can do open,play and watch but not a realistic way unless you want to test.Thanks Jason, I'll try that

2 year old hp g60-630 US, Factory installed OS Windows7,processor type Pentum (R) Dual core CPU [emailprotected] total memory: 3073MB, Bios version :F.63, hard drive 500GB hard drive, Intel (R) ac82GL40 Graphics Memory Controller Hub,starts with black screen, laptop fell on its power cord while in use, since then problems,with power light while connected, and battery went bad, error log 0601, I opened it to check power jack and appeared to be good, while open I cleaned the dust from fan,not clawed, but air exit screen covered with dust, but is clean now,I opened the power cord by the end where it connects to the laptop power jack and noticed it broken and separated connections, cleaned the hard clear plastic and soldered the connections has 3 and I soldered 2 broken and power light stays on now.At the time I powered up screen with 3 rows from hp showed.
I tried every step in every row of the 3, without being able to go past any of those 3 rows to next step(it just wouldn't get me to the next step, I forced shut dawn and started again with same results about 3 times, until black screen showed up).results ;stat up test 100% of the system memory tested OK 30,113,730,048 by test of system memory OK. From BAD To WORST. I tried the hard drive in a Toshiba laptop and worked, showed up with hp logo and ask to get to its' original state and did it. in the Toshiba laptop as the primary drive worked or on an external enclosure with USB worked fine. But confuses me because the laptop was not showing any problems other than battery or power cord/jack to begin with and before disassembling. How can I find what is wrong?
I thank you for reading and will appreciate any help.
It is very possible I grabbed the motherboard with my not grounded hands but don't know how to check for than or know what tool is used for it what it looks like or the cost if that could be my problem I will need help there too. Thanks.

Good evening

If you are still looking for an answer please read below.

#1. If i am understanding you correct when you plug the AC cord into the laptop the light stays white? and doesn't flicker on and off when you wiggle it?
#2. That model HP does not have the drive shock protection for the hard drive (this is some bad news)
#3. Even if you put the hard drive into an external hard drive case and you can access some files on it it doesnt mean the the sectors the OS needs to boot are not bad from the drop.
#4. If all you get is the white light next to the ac plug, and nothing on the screen than the VIDEO chip has broken free from the BGA grid and must be re-flowed / re-soldered

If i can help any more please let me know, Mike Mike, Thank you for the information.
#1 Yes it is the situation at the time of my fist post.(the light use to flicker but I cut open the end of power cord where it plugs and solder 2 broken contacts(out of three) and light stays on now and power button with continuous light meaning I have power in to the computer).
#2Yes is bad news. But also good news, because I had run out of ideas as to what the problem might be until you have giving me this information .Thank you.
I really appreciate you giving me an area to look for a problem and I will work on the video ship to resolder it. I will let you know the out come once I have work on it. Do you Know which is the best tool to do it, other than sending it to a professional?
I have seen videos 1).where a pencil torch is used to resolder, 2).also a hot air gun directed on the video ship to resolder, and 3).a replacement of the videoship using computer assisted machine, the temperature is controlled from top and bottom, a light concentrated on the video ship area. 3 must be the best, but also sounds most expensive.
I do not have any of those tools, and that is why I ask, so that I know which one to look for, pencil torch or hot air gun?
or a more efficient way?
#3 The hard drive I did install it in my Toshiba Satelite L300 and reformatted it to its original new state, and place it back in to the HP with no results on fixing the black screen, I used it on the external hard drive with the Toshiba lap top and hard drive is working but I have no idea how to find out, if it has bad blocks caused by the fall, "it is the video chip what I must concentrate on for now", and hard drive latter when the video chip is fixed but I have a fling I will have trouble recuperating the old data from it.

Something has broken in the fall. Probably best to take it to a professional.

Everything else you have stated is very difficult to understand, but it seems like you repaired the power cable successfully & the hard drive is functional.Good afternoon donoscar

OK I must give you credit on what you have done and what you want to do.

#1... Yes a lot of of folks have seen those video's on the "re-flowing" etc. when and if this is done is a very temporary fix and I do mean temporary.
#2... Honestly if the laptop is out of manufacture warranty and if in deed this is the issue the "real and long term fix" is to have a Pro either local to you or a company online and spend an average of 100 to get the video chip re-balled. I am speaking from experience nothing beats getting the MoBo Video chip re-balled vs re-flowing

The reason why at home this can not normally be done the MoBo must be heated slowing to about 200 - 225 deg and then a hot air unit (either HAND held or attached to machine) must heat the chip slowly to about 225 deg then the chip can be removed. But this is only part of it. Now the MoBo BGA grid (balls or solder) must be un-soldered / cleaned then if the same must be done for the video chip.

Then a stencil and holder need to be used for placement of the new solder balls. To give you can idea about the solder balls they range from "0.020 all the way up to 0.080" now depending on the video chip there will be from 100 to 700 hundred balls in that little chip. The video chip it self is only about 1.5" square and the spacing in-between the solder balls is about 0.075". There is no room for ERROR here. Now even when the chip has the new solder balls the MoBo heating and Video chip heating must be done again. Then the MoBo must be cooled down.

This just to give you an idea of the the process. I would not suggest doing this at home.

Hopefully this will help you Thank you for explaining how important it is to have it done right by a lab or equipped shop.
I personally appreciate the detail about the amount of pins size and separation between them,Thanks.
Coming from an experienced person I will take your advice.
Can I ask if a new mother board is considered as a good option in this case?
specially hence the computer was drooped while in use and prices do vary on the same product different sellers.

I better understand what my decisions should be focus on.
Thank you very much.

...At the time I powered up screen with 3 rows from hp showed...
From what you have stated, you have video, so why all this talk about reflowing the video chip?Hello again donoscar

In my opinion the video chip did brake free from the MoBo but I could be wrong but in order to give you an idea of cost for the board there is of your model 21 product numbers ie like wa574ua etc.

Look at the bottom of the laptop in the white label (not the MS sticker for windows) and you will see a Model number or product number like VU743AV or like WA574UA etc. Once I have that i should be able to find the MoBo part numbers.

Talk to you soon, Mike thank you .
I did try every one of the choices on the screen at the time I had video, and none of them will get me to the next step, it wouldn't take me pass that point, reason why I took it apart to clean and to see if I could find anything out of place, but it is after that, the black screen showed up and my limited knowledge will not take me any further. Only a black screen. But only that.

Your advise on taking it to a professional is holding very strong. But I'm also trying to learn which I'm doing with your help.
Thank you.product WA573UA#ABA

Thank youHi Again donoscar

I do have a couple more questions for you sorry it is so hard to get any king of description of a issue or fix thru a post.

#1... Do you have a monitor that you can plug into the laptops VGA port if so plug it in and turn on the laptop if you can see your normal desktop it is not the Video chip but the LCD screen or the inverter at the bottom of the screen.

#2... If you did take the laptop completely apart and after the LCD was screwed back down the laptop base do you remember plugging in a plug on the left SIDE on the laptop base (a lot of G60's have the LCD plug on the left

http://t1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcQgz4ej0e4-FTgCLkqTHtvl7feHJRpFZ8FHxgSwkyzAC_2121wRdw

#3... not being a wise guy but are you sure the screen is totally black if you look really close at the screen can you see faint images of your desktop?

#4... Out of curiosity when you turn the laptop on is the hardrive light blinking on and off like it is trying to boot or are you hearing windows sound(s) like normal.

But when you have a min please look on the bottom of the laptop for that sticker and get the PN / Model number.

Thanks a bunch Mike Hi Again

Ok Here is your systemboard / motherboard part number 578232-001 when Googlin it the prices range from about 120.00 on up (to buy) plus S&H companies that do the re-balling ave about 100.00 plus S&H

So it is pretty close in price, Even myself I have a G60 series here but just a different model and the better half has been very happy with it. I also have a DV7 and I like it, plus I have a Dell inspiron 1525 and this units works ok for my portable work PC.

But if you do decide to buy a MoBo just make sure you give them the G60 number, the product # and the MoBo part number so you can be sure you are getting the correct one.

But if you are looking for an opinion on fixing it / repairing it here is a way to look at it. Probably under (going higher in price) 200.00 if you like the PC and it has been good to you it is still cheaper than buying a new laptop. Even a cheapy laptop is going to be 350.00 +

Well hopefully this give you some to things to think about but I am curious to see if plugging in an external monitor worked or not from what you are describing it won't.

Mike thank you very much.
I will try to find the connector to plug in an external monitor.
it will not be today but very possible during the week and will get back to you.
Thank you very much for looking it up.
most likely I will end up buying a new MoBo.
Thanks for the info and tips. To every one Quote from: donoscar on July 22, 2012, 02:48:52 PM
...I will try to find the connector to plug in an external monitor...
Connector is standard 15-pin VGA connector, on every monitor made in the last 15+years.thank you again for telling me, the one fitting I have for desk top it looked to be bigger than the one in the laptop but you are right it did fit but screen is showing black.

Now I have try the external monitor with the same result black screen.

Thank you for pointing it out because I was going to look for it.

The fact that it doesn't have holes for screws must make it appear smaller.

Any ways now the only solution for me is going to be A new MoBo because it makes more sense than having it fixed with the chance of something else coming up wrong in the mother board.

And this also makes it as a solved trouble pending I get the new MoBo on it.

Guys you where a great help and I will post my result once I get the new one on the laptop.

Solve : Windows 7 has a black screen after coming out of hibernation **fix for some**?

Answer»

Hi all

I just joined your site and I wanted to post a fix that i know has been ALL over WWW. If you have a laptop and it has W7 (32 - 64bit)

Problem was on Some laptops with W7 HomePrem, Pro etc When the laptop is put to hibernation (ie closing the lid so it goes to sleep) and upon resuming (ie pushing the power button or on some laptops just OPENING the lid) and the LCD looks black but really the backlight just never kicks in but the fans are running, HD light is blinking etc. CHANGING sleep options NC, BIOS options (C3 etc) NC, power options, Hybrid Options NC, BIOS update NC etc. (And yes I know SLEEP and hibernation are different) but some people out there reference to both as the same thing. A good way to test this issue is when the laptop was in hibernation and you try to wake it up and it seems to be running just plug in a CRT or lcd into the video port on the laptop and bang both displays work! and when you unplug the external monitor your laptop screen is normal once again check any and all USB devices.

Here was the FIX and it has worked many laptops. Again it has to do with USB devices again. When the laptop is put to hibernation (closing the lid) but upon pushing the power button or opening the lid the screen stays black or seems black but really the backlight is just not kicking in. If the person has a "thumb drive" "usb stick" etc what EVER they ant to call them. DO NOT leave the thumb drive in the usb port and put the laptop into hibernation / sleep doing so will stop it from waking up. Wireless mice drivers help on some and external HD can cause the black screen issue also. *Plus keep one thing in mind removing a usb device when windows is doing it's hibernation/ going into hibernation thing DO NOT REMOVE it. Wait until the PC is off then remove the thumb drive.
I Know this will help a lot of people out there, the issue is some times a driver, or a device that is installed etc. It just is trial and error.
Thanks, and good luck Mike

Also: Most laptops have USB devices built-in- most notably things like webcams.Quote from: hartbeatmr on July 19, 2012, 09:08:58 PM

(And yes I know SLEEP and hibernation are different) but some people out there reference to both as the same thing.
If you know they are different, then why are you not making the distinction in your post? You are talking about them as though they are the same thing, even though acknowledge, in the above quote, that they are not.

If true hibernation was used, then the computer is fully powered down and will awake by opening the lid on a laptop or moving a mouse or touching the keyboard.

I can however suggest resetting the power settings to default.

To Reset and Restore All Power Plans

NOTE: This can be handy if you have a missing default power plan and would like to restore it, or would like to reset all default power plans back to their default settings.
1. Open the Start Menu.

2. In the Start Menu search box, type cmd and press Enter.

3. In the command prompt, copy and paste the command below and press Enter.
powercfg -restoredefaultschemes

4. Close the command prompt.Quote from: immental1200 on July 21, 2012, 05:59:09 AM

I would not make such an absolute statement. While having a thumb drive / usb drive plugged in should normally not cause such PROBLEMS, how can we say that this always holds true for all brands and models of computers? As a troubleshooting step, I think hartbeatmr's suggestions have some merit.

Solve : what is a good free malware program??

Answer»

Hi -
I have a new computer and when I put in Malwarebytes-antimalware they said I had 4 days trial. I have used that free for 5 years. Is it no longer free? If not what is a good free program? I am RUNNING windows 7 Home Premium. I also run Avast Antivirus and Superantispyware. THANKS for advise. Bob MalwareBytes absolutely has a free version - you downloaded the wrong one.
http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html?part=dl-10804572&subj=dl&tag=buttonGood evening Bobh

Most definitely maleware bytes does offer a free version, but the paid version does have some perks to it. But you cant go wrong with the free version even the free version has help my customers and a lot of end users countless times.
#1. Free version of MWB you don't get boot time scanning, you cant schedule scans and no support other than FAQ and googling for fixes etc

#2. Keep one thing in mind you cant have 2 antivirus's running at the same time. (active / running scanners - inactive / manual ones are different) If you run more than 1 active AV suite at a time you will have issues. ie BSOD, freezing or over all system performance etc.

#3. Great free AV is Avast, again free so you do loose some perks but you do get the ability to schedule scans, remote desktop feature, firewall, psh'ing filter etc.

#4. But if you want a great and CHEAP AV suite that I use my SELF and is the only paid AV suite that i offer to my Clients is "Vipre 2012 suite" they do have just a AV but really for a couple of buck more (i do mean under 10 difference) you can not beat features, cost per lic and per year and ILL not slow a PC up like Norton, McAfee, Trendmicro etc.
There tech support is second to none, HERE in the US, friendly and quick. Plus you can under stand what they are saying because they speak in English and no techy terms are used, oh ya the phone tech support is FREE for as long as you have a CURRENT lic.

If you need any further assistance please let me know, Mike Allan -
Thanks for the reply. I used the address you gave and got the Malware-antimalware program. Bob hartbeatmr -
Thanks for your reply. i will keep in mind what you wrote but right now I think I have what I need. Bob

Solve : linksys wireless internet help?

Answer»

Hello, I bought a new linksys router e1500 and i'm trying to use it to replace my older linksys router. My old one works just fine, I just wanted more speed. When I go to plug in my new one, the ETHERNET port light comes on, and of course the power light comes on, but not the internet light. All it will do is connect to the network then on my computer and laptop when I connect to the router it says I have limited internet access. But on my old one, everything works fine so it's not the routers or the computers. I'm pretty sure i've been through something like this before I just don't remember what to do. Any ANSWERS would be very helpful, and thank you for READING. By the way, I tried resetting it, and on the installation from the CD for the new router it gets a little % done then says some on the lines of "You don't have any internet access" well basically telling me the cord isn't plugged in to give me internet, but it is.Welcome to CH.

Quick answer: Just wait. Your modem takes a BIT to recognize you new router has a different LAN sublet. Read over the documentation for you DSL or Cable modem.

Try punting you PC directly on the modem and see what happens. You may have to poser down and power up again both modem and PC. Remember doing this about a year ago?

OK. Now again with the new tourer in place after the modem. Check with your IP. Some modems don't let the router to do DCHP. Depends.

Some modems want to find a MAC address that belongs to on e of your PCs. If so, tell your router to fake the MAC. Or just power down and power up everything ans see if the modem finally gets it right WITHOUT the need to change any settings.

The power down, power up, plug and unplug is actually the recommended procedure. Every time you unplug and plug in a cable, it makes the equipment do the thing again.

And you have to power done the PC and restart Windows sometimes.
Good evening

OK Here are some things to check but more info from you would be great

#1 Who is your ISP, Roadrunner, Verizon DSL
#2 In some areas DSL router new mac address needs to be givin to the ISP so they can change it and flush out the old mac.
#3 Again in some cases Roadrunner also wold need to be contacted to give them the new mac address.
#4 Make sure your modem (dsl or rr etc) nic cable is plugged into the WAN plug of your new router and your house network cables can go into the plugs on the router.
#5 Make sure you are suing your correct ip info (like if you have a static IP or dhcp)
#6 if you are dhcp after the new router is booted up un-plug the modem and wait a min and plug it back in.
#7 If you where dhcp coming in the house and if you where dhcp on your pc.
#8 (this is for testing if the router still doesnt work) Un-plug the net work cable from your modem and plug it into your pc if it works than the router is miss configured.

I hope this helps if you need more help just let me know. Mike

Solve : Need to select the default Windows 7 OS at boot, cannot get into windows?

so, there was a problem with the bootup, and i popped in the windows 7 installation DVD, and repaired it(via system repair). all went well, i was able to get into windows. the "select which os to boot from" message popped up, so i disabled that and chose the wrong OS to be the default, the corrupted one [which is called "windows 7 home premium (RECOVERED)]. i also, foolishly, set the timer to 0, so i can't even choose the "other" windows 7 os, the one that is not corrupt. also, bcedit does not work on DOS prompt. how can i get the default OS boot menu before bootup, again? thanks in advanceYou now have 2 installs of Win7...
That being said at bootup immediately strt tapping F8 which will bring up the advanced boot menu...
From there you should be able to undo the things you chose poorly on...Good evening

Solve : Windows 7 Pro in Domain PC screen saver will not come on / lock the PC?

Answer»

Hi all here is another fix that I am POSTING here that will help a lot of people.

Now if the PC is set up in a workgroup (home PC) the screen saver will WORK this write up is only for once the PC is joined into a domain and if the screen saver dose not work but has too for security reasons (ie like when you walk away from your desktop)

PROBLEM was on a Fresh install of W7 Pro (in a domain only) after W7 is all set up and all functions / options work (ie screen saver etc) Now when the PC was set up (in a workgroup) the screen saver would work normally and take the password and function normally but once joined into a domain the screen saver would never kick in and lock the PC as it should. Changing power options had NC, recreate profile NC etc etc.

Here was the FIX and it worked 2X. If the PC's have ANY USB wireless devices like MICE or keyboards etc. You must GET the drivers from the manufacture (including Microsoft ones) even knowing when you plug in a wireless mouse and W7 installs it and it functions but the PC will not lock (so it is at the crtl+alt+del screen) get the wireless device drivers install them and all is good.

Dual Boot OS Windows 7 64-bit, Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit
Video card ATI Radeon HD 7750 / ATI Radeon HD 5570
Processor AMD Phenom 2 quad core
Ram 16 gigs
Motherboard MSI 870A-G54
Power supply Corsair GS 600

I hope this one can be solved quickly. Full explanation is below.

Last night, I was copying a file to my external (my latest disc image backup, as a matter of fact) and it got stuck. The Copying... window had the loading bar fully green, and said 0 seconds remaining. It stayed like this for about 10 minutes, so I hit the Cancel button on the Copying... window.

After about 15 more minutes, it had not canceled, so I clicked the X in the top right corner, and the window grayed out. A new window appeared, it said "explorer.exe has stopped responding." and gave me three options, I clicked the one that said "Close this program" or something similar (the other options were Wait for this Program to respond and I forget the third.) Of course this make my desktop icons and start menu disappear. I used Ctrl alt del and selected Task Manager, chose Start new Task and typed in explorer.exe. This made the icons reappear on my desktop, and the start bar appeared, but for some reason I could not open any folders, start any programs, and right click did not open a menu. I decided to restart.

I could open the start menu using the super key, and selected Restart using the keyboard (for some reason my mouse would not select ANYTHING, even though I could move it freely.) It got to the Logging Off screen, and I WALKED away. 20 minutes later I came back and it was still Logging Off...

I did a hard restart (held in the Power button until the computer turned off and then turned it back on.) Now it will load past the bios, but never loads Windows, it says

"error: no such device: 8ef1b99b-8e16-4e16-97c4-4c02576d8a7f
grub rescue>_"

I tried my Installation disc and picked the Repair My Installation... option, but it ALTERNATED between telling me "Windows is not installed on this disc" and "This repair disc does not match this version of Windows, please insert the correct repair disc for this version of Windows." When I choose the Browse option, all my system files are under disc D:, and disc C: says "System Reserved" but has nothing inside of it.

I loaded Ubuntu, and I can still see the files and folders on the Windows disc, as if it is fine, but it will not boot to Windows.

The hard drive is less than a year old, and has not been acting up. No strange sound emanate from the hard drive.

Should I try to pull my things off the disc? Should I reinstall? Should I trash this hard drive? I am a little sad this happened on my Disc Image day, not sure if it really completed copying or not. Thanks for any help1Quote

You can still pick Ubuntu from the grub screen?

Have you tried Code: [Select]sudo update-grub

The thing is, I get the "no such device" message when booting to my Windows hard drive. I can boot to Ubuntu perfectly fine. I recently upgraded all the way from 10.04 to 12.04, but I have restarted since then without any problems. In fact, I booted up Windows just to do the Disc Image, and right away it started. Only after I had the problems with copying the disc image and explorer.exe crashing that it refused to start.

I have two different physical hard drives, both unpartitioned, one with windows (call it Drive 1) and one with Ubuntu(Drive 2).

I chose from the menu before start-up, it asks which OS I want to boot to. The menu includes Ubuntu, then Memtest 64, then Windows 7. When I choose Windows 7, I get the "No such device" message. I have tried unplugging the Ubuntu drive (removing the SATA cord from the drive) but I still get the "no such device" error and can not boot to Windows.

I have tried changing the boot order, but considering I still get the "Choose your OS" screen, I am guessing the boot order does not matter.

I typed in sudo update-grub, and pressed enter, but all it did was open the next line. So it looked like
Code: [Select]grub rescue> sudo update-grub
grub rescue>_

Now I find that occasionally, when trying to start Windows, I no longer get the "no such device/grub rescue" message, just the blinking underscore. I left it for two hours hoping it would load, but it did not.

Thank you.Quote

I assume you have other image backups. The quickest fix may be restoring to a good disk image. If there are other files that you have saved since the last CLEAN image back up, grab them from ubuntu before you restore.

Solve : License?

Hi All,

I recently purchased a family pack for Win 7 Home Premium, I have used it twice. On my laptop I updated it from Vista to Win7, if I do a FULL reinstall on the laptop, will I still be able to do this without using up another license?

Appreciate any assistance.

MeRead the EULA. Every PC or laptop is an instal.

The only possible exception is if the laptop already has a void upgrade option license for Windows 7. But if that were the case, you would have received the update DVD by now. That special deal was some time ago.What you need to do instead of burning up another liscens on the laptop just because of a clean install is use magicjellybean finder to retrieve the laptop #'s code...
Then when you re-install use that VALID # and you won't WASTE an install from the Family pak...

Solve : you need to format disk in drive F: before you can use it?

Answer»

HI All,

I have windows 7 install on DELL Latitude E6320, whenver I plug my 160 GB HDD its error out:you need to format disk in drive F: before you can use it..

BUt If i try to connect in another laptop HP its get connected.

Pls HELP..

Thanks & RegardsThis has come up before and I do not have a clear answer. It may have something to do with the adapter your are using.

Do y0ou need to use it as a portable backup device?
Can you not share files between the computers some other way?

Only ifs the data is NOT important, you can try formatting the drive and see it it then is compatible with both computers.
Otherwise, I would suggewt getting a new external backup from a major maker.

Here is a broad review of external drives.
http://external-hard-drive-review.toptenreviews.com/

Is the other HP laptop also running Windows?
By chance, did you attempt to use any encryption software that may have been included with the drive? Or attempt to encrypt using other software?
When you enter "My Computer" on the laptop with the issue (My Computer is found now under the Start Menu> "Computer", or you may type "Computer" into the start menu search to locate it), is there another device displayed that is the drive you are looking for?

Some drives come with multiple partitions, one for storage and one with special software. If the software drive is empty and does not have formatting, or if it is an unrecognized format, Windows will prompt you to format that part of the drive when it is connected.
If you happened to format the drive with a different file system (EXT in Linux, or even TrueCrypt, for example) that would also cause issues.

One possible solution if it is a dual partition issue:
http://superuser.com/questions/226307/prevent-windows-7-prompt-format-usb-hdd (delete the drive letter, more of a "quick fix" than a solution). yes another laptop alos running windwos 7yes another laptop also have windows 7If the HDD has an OS installed to it you cannot simply move it from laptop to laptop and expect it to work properly...
This is by design...Ridhwan,
Could you please clarify if this is a regular external HDD drive for backing up/storing data, or is it a drive you removed from a laptop? i.e., the kind of external hard drive you would BUY at a store?

I think Patio was thinking that you might be trying to boot off it.

If it is a regular external drive, not recovered from another computer, did you in fact look under your "My Computer" window to see if there might be two disks showing up? (One that is more or less blank, and one with the data that should be there?)
And could you confirm if you were attempting to use encryption or password protection software of any kind with the drive? Hi All,

I have external 160 GB transcend HDD. Dell Latitude E6320 model. Windows 7 OS Installed. I tried all posibilites but fail. Please Help me out!

ThanksI will assume the HDD is OK, but somehow the partition information can not be read by Windows 7 do to some kind of issue other than hardware failure. Use of a partition recovery tool may help. Or it may also DESTROY your date.
I will not recommend you buy this product. You can solve the problem without it. But you may wish to rad about what it does.
http://www.partition-recovery.com/

1. Instead, just plug it into the happy PC that can read it, save the data, then reformat the drive on the SAD PC. After that, restore data over your LAN.

Or
2. Consider a free partition tool. This one I have NOT used.
http://www.easeus.com/partition-recovery/

For reasons I don't comprehend, USB drives surfer some kind of identity crisis. The partition tool may help fix the problem.

This free tool has worked for me. Results may vary.
http://www.minitool-partitionrecovery.com/

Be ADVISED that partition recovery tools can also destroy data. Sorry, no warranty. Safe and sane is #1 above. (But I go for #2 because I have lots of backups already.)

Does this help any?

Solve : Ultimate Boot CD?

Answer»

i was recently recommended (on another forum) this download to help with a booting /HDD problem on a laptop (failing HDD on Asus laptop, discussed in another thread). I Downloaded the software and made the CD. Before using it on the problem MACHINE i decided to test it on my Win7 64 bit Packard Bell desktop, which as far as i know has no problems with windows booting. I didn't run any recovery utilities or anything from the disc but ever since running the disc on the machine it has displayed the Windows BOOT Manager screen in the bios whenever i switch it on. This gives me the options to load Windows 7 normally or run Windows 7 recovery tools. I do not need thse options as i just WANT the PC to boot normally. I cant see anywhere in the Bios setup where i can turn this screen off and return the machine to normal running/booting.

Can anyone help please? Have i messed the machine up with this disc.?The boot up things on Windows 7 64 bit is not the same as anything else. Use only the MS Windows 7 DVD to make any changes.

The CD you describe is based on a collection older utilities that are not compatible with Windows 7 64 bit. The is no resown to believe that such programs are safe. The 64 bit boot loader is very different. Very different. Older programs makes broad assumptions that no longer work.

EDIT:
The 64 bit compatibility issues have been documented elsewhere. The issues include the 64 bit boot up thing.
Use the original Windows 7 64 bit DVD to make repairs.
One question: Is the Ultimate Boot CD suitable for Win7 32 bit? This is the type of windows 7 i was recomended to use it for/on. Using it on a 64 bit machine was my error, did not need it for that. Was intended to hepl recover or at least test a HDD on a 32bit machine that appears to be failing. was given detailed instructions on another help forum (Bleeping Computer) as to how to use it. Contributor was convinced it was what i needed.

As for corecting the 'DAMAGE' to the 64bit system, i have the recovery discs i made when i got the machine plus a driver disc. How do i go about undoing the damage done by the Ultimate Boot CD?Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 13, 2012, 02:09:05 PM

Solve : Chicony USB 2.0 webcam will not work?

Answer»

Webcam says "please turn on the camera" but will not start. Correct driver identified but installation failed. Device manager states "This device cannot start. (Code 10) CLICK 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."

Hard drive was recently replaced due to some fault and webcam has not worked since.

Have a Toshiba P200-13Z Satellite LAPTOP.

Any ideas?Did you attempt to go to the MANUFACTURER website and download their drivers?
Windows may have identified the device as a webcam and installed a generic driver that may not work.

Also, is this a built-in webcam? If it is external, what brand and MODEL number is it?

Here is a link to the Toshiba P200-13Z Satellite laptop drivers page. Make sure to select the operating system you are using, and pay special attention to whether or not you need the 32 or 64 bit drivers, this varies by computer.
"Camera Software" is the listing you will need to locate after you enter your OS on that page. It is one zipped FILE, about 23MB or so.

Solve : A, S, and D keys don't work?

Answer»

Hello

I've been having a PROBLEM with my keyboard recently where the a, s and d keys don't respond to input. It happened out of the blue 3 days ago, when they just stopped working. I had no idea what would have caused it, and since this computer is mainly used for gaming, I thought that it was a problem developed from an OVERUSAGE of them. So I go the entire day using the onscreen keyboard, and the next day the keys are working perfectly. I then had to do the remove-the-battery-and-ac-for-x-amount-of-seconds thing (that apparently fixes lots of problems) to fix a hopefully unrelated issue with the keyboard yesterday, and now those keys don't work again!

I have a Compaq Presario CQ56 with W7 x64

Any help is appreciated, and I'll be happy to give any extra info needed.Try another keyboard with the computer or try the keyboard with another computer and see if you get the same results.A Compaq Presario CQ56

Try an EXTERNAL (desktop) type keyboard plugged into the usb port and if those keys work OK on that, you'll probably need to get and fit one of these:

Solve : How do i get rid of the "Press any key to continue..." on Windows 7?

Answer»

Hello,
I'm writing a batch script on windows, where i'm PERFORMING the FOLLOWING:

CALL abc.exe
call def.exe

After it runs the abc.exe, i get a message "Press any key to continue", and only after the key is pressed, it executes the def.exe.
How do i get rid of the "Press any key to continue" after abc.exe?

Regards,
MilindThe "Press any key to continue" message is generated by a pause statement in batch. You don't have one, so I'm THINKING the abc program is PUTTING out the message.

You might try piping a key into the abc program:

Code: [Select]echo. | abc
def

No guarantees, but stranger things have worked!

FWIW: call is used to tranfer control to other batch files with the expectation of returning to the original batch file (the caller). It's not necessary when running exe files.

Solve : Pop-ups?

I've suddenly started getting pop-ups ALTHOUGH I have my pop-up blocker on. I've run Malarebytes, Microsoft Security Essentials, Microtrend and AVG, but no threats are found. What could be causing this? Thanks MUCH!What type of popups? When and where do you get them?

And do you have both MSE and AVG installed?Yes, I do have both MSE and AVG installed. However, I only installed AVG after MSE didn't find anything. The popups are occuring on a sweeps site (onlinesweepsstakes.com) which does not use popups. I double-checked to make sure it wasn't something that had just recently been started with them. And they're occurring on the sweeps site itself, not one of the individual sweeps (if that makes sense). Does this help? And should I now uninstall AVG?
You should NEVER use more than one anti-virus !!

Uninstall the one you dont want from 'Uninstall Program' in the CONTROL Panel1) Please uninstall one of the two AV's. You only want to have one av app installed.

2) Are you saying the pop up issue is only on that site? If so, it SOUNDS more like a site related problem than a browser or system issue.Check mark the block pop-up windows in firefox from tools->content tab

What crashes, the Operating System or Safe Mode? What security are you trying to update? The people here thrive on details! What do you mean Windows Vista wants you to open in safe mode?Ok, going from the ERROR CODE (that for some reason, you've put in the TITLE !?!), you are attempting to install Microsoft Security Essentials in Safe Mode and it the PC gives an error. Is this correct ??

I removed the battery and left it DRYING, then I took it to a technician and told me that the motherboard was rusty. It turn on but the screen stays black. Is it completely fried? What can I do?What kind of soup ? ?Chikn soup, why?Just an attempt at lightening things up...
Depending on how long it sat LIKE that he may very well be correct...

Did he give you a price on the replacement ?

At any rate i would immediately remove the hard drive so you at least have a chance of saving rhe data...NO, he didn't but do I have to buy a new computer or just replace the motherboard?Thats why i asked if he gave you a price...only you can decide that...My advice would be. Given this statement by your "technician' "told me that the motherboard was rusty." that unless this was not the 1st instance of SPILLING some liquid on the laptop i would steer well clear of that particular technician. His portrayal of the cause and effect of the liquid incursion into the innards of the computer significantly exaggerates the process of oxidization. If you have the patience i would suggest you, within the limits of your ability, remove all covers/doors/access ports on the computer as well as any easily removable inner components and then give the unit time to dry (could be a couple of weeks). If you decide to use a device for accelerated drying such as a hair dryer. Use caution and use it only on LOW SPEED and hold it at least 2 feet away. If the Gods be kind and smile on you you may recover the computer. Competent repair shops can do this service but will need to be measured against the cost and possible negative result.good luck,truenorth

Solve : Re-installing a backup onto a new computer.....any issues??

Answer»

Hi a newbie here, I'm typing this on my iPad because my PC had died, I am currently waiting for my new PC to be delivered, fortunately I created a system image only a couple of weeks ago, has anyone any experience of restoring there image backup on a brand new PC? While googling I have noticed a few comments that sometimes there are some issues when not restoring back to The same hardware? Obviously I would prefer to simply restore it straight to the new PC but saying that if there is a chance of an issue I would rather reinstall everything manually as I do have separate backups of most of my important stuff. Thanks!Yes, you can! No, you can't!

An image backup is stable for restoring to the same hardware.

A file-by-file backup lets you pick the files to recover.

Here is a workaround. If you have enough dire space. You do an image restore to a spare hard drive, or a partition LARGE enough. Then you pick out the files you need.

Unfortunately, you can't easily restore program files, just data files. The exception is some programs that do not require installation, the just run. Few commercial programs are like that.

In short, you can GET interpersonal data back, but you have to re-install most of your programs.

Yeah, I know, there are some packages out there that claim they can transfer all your stuff. But I don't believe it.Quote from: Simmy on July 04, 2012, 02:56:50 AM

yes Geek -9pm is right you can and the same TIME you can't. I do use images on large scale, u can reinstall on different hardware BUT U WIL RUN INTO SOME TROUBLES for sure for eg; the drivers, i need to UPDATE all the drivers from manufacturer's website.

gud luk

Solve : Dynamic and basic disk issues?

Answer»

Hey all,

I'm setting up my first dual-boot system with Kubuntu from Windows 7 Pro x64 and Disk Management is only offering me the option of creating simple, spanned, striped, mirrored or RAID-5 volumes instead of primary partitions. My understanding was that those options only showed up on dynamic disks, and that dynamic disks didn't allow more than one OS. Got any advice?

As a sidenote, I'm looking Disk Management and I've got a 300 MB partition for "BDEDrive". Does this have something to do with Bitlocker? If so, why would it be on my Professional OS?Welcome to CH.

Dynamic Disks a re a great feature of the Windows OS.
However, I don't recall any compelling reason for a home USER to use this approach. IT people have need for it.

You are asking two or three questions at once.

Could we focus on on issue?
How about 'Install Windows 7 64 bit on RAID hardware?'
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/problems-installing-windows-7-ultimate-64-bit-with/72414fe1-261f-4796-9b9f-e001375241bc

If you have enough memory and a fast CPU, then, In my opinion, you would do well to install a Linux distro in a VM (Virtural Machine) after the Windows 7 64 bit install is finished.
Linux in a VM can perform useful work, but a bit SHORT of high performance games.Sounds good, I'll do that instead. Sorry if I was unclear about the situation, I've got Windows 7 installed just fine. I'm still seeing a partition called "BDEDrive", though, and I'm a little confused what it is. Google tells be it's associated with Bitlock encryption, but i'm not using Enterprise or Ultimate.Quote from: isuldi on July 03, 2012, 05:23:13 PM

It is not just you. Let's just say that Windows 7 is effortlessly sophisticated. Does that makes senses? Well look at this:
Quote
What are system partitions and boot partitions?

System partitions and boot partitions are names for partitions (or volumes) on a hard disk that Windows USES when starting. These terms can be confusing because the system partition actually contains the files used to boot Windows 7, while the boot partition contains the system files. Understanding these concepts is important if your computer is configured in one of the FOLLOWING ways:

Your computer has more than one operating system installed (often called a dual-boot or multiboot configuration). For more information, see Install more than one operating system (multiboot).

Your computer is set up to run BitLocker Drive Encryption. For more information, see Help protect your files using BitLocker Drive Encryption.

The system partition contains the hardware-related files and the Boot folder that tell a computer where to look to start Windows. By default, Windows 7 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch (as opposed to upgraded from a previous version of Windows) on an unpartitioned hard drive. This partition is 100 MB in size.

Also look at:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Install-more-than-one-operating-system-multiboot
It is not odd at all for Windows 7 to have two partitions that it needs. The addition partition might not be for the user, just for the internal stuff of the OS. This can vary by how the Windows 7 was s installed.

No ... I've been running Online Armer for about a year now. I don't know if Online armer is by Emsisoft. As for the antivirus, I'm running Microsoft SECURITY Essentials.

It is. That crash was caused by the online armor driver. If you get the same error again, you should try reinstalling the program and checking your hard drive for errors. It hasn't happend again. I'll post back if the same error appears again.

Solve : Taskeng.exe appearing at Startup sometimes??

Answer»

Hello
About a MONTH ago or two, I don't really remember, I started getting this dos window. Back then the dos window said:
Code: [Select]Taskeng.exe
c:\run.bat is not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file.
I don't remember the message exactly. So I made a batch file called run.bat with these LINES:
Code: [Select]@echo off
cls
exit
But now I'm not getting the error. Instead, I'm getting a BLANK Dos Screen.
The reason why I made the batch file was to see if the error would disappear. There was no such file as run.bat. until I made it.
I've TRIED looking in task scheduler to see if I could find ANYTHING that existed that pointed to a file called Run.bat.
Any Suggestions?

Carlos

Solve : takes up to 15 minutes for Internet explorer to start up?

Answer»

I have a two month old DELL Inspiron 620s, OS-Windows 7. Recently it has taken about five minutes to shut down. Also, it takes about 15 minutes for Internet Explorer to come on line! It boots up in about one minute.We'll address the shutdown issue later - right now let's figure out the problem with IE. Is IE the only app that doesn't open quickly? If so, please try any other browser (Firefox, Chrome, OPERA, etc) and see if they open quickly. Also:

1) What is NEW or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new HW, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Have you run full system scans with both your av AND with MalwareByates? If not, please to so now.All other browsers act the same. I have run anti-malware, nothing shows up.I ASKED if you scanned with BOTH your anti virus app AND an anti malware app. Do you have an AV installed and if so did you scan with it?
