Solve : Scanned w/Malwarebytes: Blue screen after restart?

Answer»

I scanned my computer with Malwarebytes (Anti-Malware 2.0.4.1028) db version 2015.03.09.03 today. I followed the recommendation(?) and quarantined a combination of 152 files, folders, registry data, registry values & registry keys.

I restarted my computer and the infamous "blue screen of death" appeared with 10-12 lines RUNNING across it.

Oops!

This is the first time the blue screen appeared on this computer which I have been using for about 3 years.

Coincidence or conspiracy? (Just kidding.)

I manually shutdown with the power button and powered up again. Everything started up just fine but I found the blue screen to be very unsettling.

I don't pretend to know what goes on inside computers. Is there ANYTHING specific I should restore (ie registry stuff) or should I restoring everything?

If it doesn't happen again, don't worry about it. If it does, do the following:

Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next replyOkay!

If I recall correctly blue screens come and go, but get worse over time. Is that your understanding also?

BTW, this is the only computer (other than a Tablet) I have available.

Thanks Allan. Quote from: Idjit BoB on March 09, 2015, 09:50:22 AM

No. FYI - This may not be the "blue screen of death" since it was solid blue with lines running across it with no text. You need to understand that we depend on you to present cogent facts with which we can work. In the future please don't describe a problem as something you've heard about -  just tell us EXACTLY what is happening, what it looks like, what led up to it, and what happens after it occurs - otherwise you'll end up wasting our time as well as your own..... Thank you.I apologize for wasting your time.

I thought I understood the problem. When I realized that it may not have been what I thought, I felt obligated to post it. It might still be the blue screen of death. I just don't know.

I realize we just changed over to Daylight Savings and statistics show that irritability goes up 25% on the Monday after the change.

Thanks to your comments next time I probably won't be so honest in my follow up descriptions.

A simple "ok" would have sufficed. We're trying to provide you support - sarcasm is not necessary.Your comments came across as if you were scolding a child.

We all know that the words we use in a forum or email sometimes do not come across as intended. Maybe you weren't scolding.

I was being SARCASTIC so at least I was effectively communicating. You on the other had were not effective in your communication.

Ok, you can have the last word and lock this thread if you wish. Here's a BSOD looks like. Was your's like that?

3.When your system BSODs, write down the STOP error code, as well as any written out error message back here. The STOP error will always APPEAR, but the message may not. You are looking for this:

Thanks for the screen shot.

I had a blue screen with no text but 8-12 lines running across it as if it was the old fashioned TV with a horizontal control problem. I changed a few vacuum tubes... just kidding. If there was text I may have not been able to see it because of these lines. I just don't know.

This problem has happened only once right after running Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 2.0.4.1028 (db version 2015.03.09.03) and rebooted my computer as I was prompted by the application.

I looked further into Anti-Malware settings and the Non-Malware Protection was set to show Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) and Potentially Unwanted Modification (PUM) detections as "Treat detections as malware". In HISTORY everything is tagged under Vendor column with a PUP prefix.

It is my assumption then that PUP and PUM is not truly malware.

I asked if I should look at the quarantined file and restore those "files" (not sure if they are files or lines of DOS type code) having to do with the computer's registry data, values, and keys. Can you tell me whether this is a good idea?

Thanks for replying.

Gotta' watch my grandkids. Be back later. PUP's and PUM's are unwanted programs. As for restoring items from quarantine; you can try but I don't think it will help much.I'm moving this out of the malware forum. As I said earlier - if it doesn't happen again don't worry about it.10-4

Solve : can't logon to Windows 7 professional sp1 32 bit on Lenovo T61p notebook 2g RAM?

Answer»

no user profile icons are displaying on Welcome screen, just blue with blue circling likebusy pointer butcan MOVE mouse pointer. the blue screen pops to almost as if it were going to cmd prompt screen but stays on blue screen. can't do anything to move from that condition. I am USING my SamsungGALAXYEXHIBIT Android to search solutions as I have nothing to click to login. Before this, I no longer had access or permission to use standard user says access denied then HELP said 'use group policy security to change how user accounts behave'.  so as much as I can remember I followed help directions something like this: GPMC=group policy mgmt console-simplified mgmt-something about personal-maybe security descriptors-and finally I ended up unchecking 'display user profiles on WELCOME SCREEN. I noticed it as I was leaving that screen but wasn't sure what happened. after going over a few other things that didn't change anything I was basically closing all my windows open THEN ASKED TO CHANGE  USERS and there it was a blank Windows login screen with no icons! Can I get them back? Problem I'm having is not having access to anything but blank blue screen spinning or busy pointer & popping screen to fake a possible changeto black screen. I hope this Iis enough to go on a lil. I didn't write down my steps on them occurring and I usually do to know what happened. this was about a month ago & I'm falling behind in my tasks as if I have no compuf2fer. Microsoft said I have a hacker & it would take detailed & long intricate work for them to remotely access a fix for it & they no longer provide free help even though I pay monthly for Office 365, they would only charge about $99 to look at it but don't have money for that. I told them I wonder if they are the hacker to  build revenue. it is very late now & this is how I make mistakes from being tired. I'll post n see if anyone is still on about 5-10 minutes.Do you have a Windows 7 Repair Disc. You might be able to fix the issues with that PERFORMING a repair to 7. If you dont have one, you can burn one using someone elses Windows 7 computer. You boot the system off of this disc and then perform a repair.I agree a Repair Install is the best bet...the Post is almost impossible to read however.

P.S.    i wonder how MS decided you were hacked....sounds like made up nonsense to me...Is that your phone number displayed on your profile? If so, why?

Solve : LAN connection not working suddenly?

Answer»

Hello All!

This issue is PRETTY complicated but I will start with this first -

I am in a dorm so I do NOT have access to the modem / router settings, unfortunately.

No one else on my floor has this issue. Plus, my laptop works connecting with the same port and wire, So I am very sure it is something on my computer. My computer is the same as in my specs/my profile witht he only difference being it runs only Windows 7 now, no longer Ubuntu.

First,

I have used the LAN in my dorm for about 2 months with no issues. Today, when I turned on my computer, the network is called "Unidentified Network" and I cannot connect to the internet.

I have gotten more and more desperate as this issue persists.

The steps I took:

1. Restarted (no change)
2. Changed ports in wall (no change)
3. Changed ethernet wires (no change)
4. Connected ethernet wire to laptop (LAN internet works fine there).

At this point I determined it is most likely my desktop that is having an issue.

5. Did ipconfig flush/release/renew and I get the following errors:

-On flush, EVERYTHING seems fine. On release, I get an error:"An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Psuedo-Interface 1 : The system cannot find the file specified". On renew, it hangs for quite some time then it says:"An error occurred while renewing interface Local AREA Connection: Unable to connect to your DCHP server. Request has timed out. An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Psuedo-Interface 1 : The systems can not find the file specified."

6. Uninstalled and reinstalled the same version of network adapter driver I have been using (using the disc that came with my motherboard)
7. Uninstalled and installed newest version of network adapter (From the manufacturer's site).
8. Reset the TCP/IP stack using this guide: http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/299357
9. Googled A LOT. Don't have McAfee service, so of course can't disable that. Few other things (like the ip release/renew) I did multiple times.
10. Did system restore, didn't change anything. Checked for Windows updates, there were 2, installed them, no changes.
11. There are NO yellow/red marks in Device manager. When I go into my network adapter, it says this device is working CORRECTLY.
12. Gave in, bought network card. Installed card, plugged in cord - NO CHANGE.

Here I decided it HAS to be some sort of setting issue.

13. Checked Internet settings, and all the IP/DNS stuff is set to "automatic".

Other notes:
- My ip is showing as 169.254.125.110 which I know it shouldn't be a 169.x.x.x address. however, I am not sure how to fix this. When I plug the ethernet cord into my laptop, it correctly configures with a different IP. Plug back into desktop, gives me a new 169 address.
- IPv4 Gateway, DNS Server, and Gateway server are all blank in my Networks Connections.
- Nothing new was installed / happened. I use this desktop for research/school work, so I rarely install anything new on it. No crashes, bluescreens, or anything.
- Since the new network card didn't work, I am leaning towards it being some setting issue - but I didn't change anything.
- I contacted network support at the dorms, but it will be after spring break before they can help me (a week from Monday).

Any help would be appreciated.

There were a few other things I did in my google research (mainly a lot of pinging with mixed results) but what I was pinging or what the results were have slipped my mind.

I have no trouble going trough these steps again, or posting screenshots - I just want internet

Thanks!

Solve : videos, games won't play?

Answer»

I can play a GAME, middle of game  a big grey Exclamation mark with a circle around it displays and there GOES game. Videos,  Youtube videos, news videos, sometimes play with no problem, and then , the mark just pops up.  I am running Windows 7, 8 mg ram, i5-2320 processor, hard drive is no where full , <25% used.  I have tried to update drivers and now at am a loss  as to what is causing this. My last GUESS is Cox is slowing/ limiting down my downloads but that is a guess and I have been a subscriber for  9 years with no problems till now. I hate to yell at them but anybody got an idea of what is happening.? Do you have any other devices that experience the same issue or is it just this one computer? You can request of Cox to perform a loopback test to your home modem which would be easy for them to perform and might point out an issue if there was one with your service to the home. Is this system connected via a Cat 5 or Cat 6 cable or wireless? Do you have any friends with a laptop that can come over and test your internet connection if you dont have a second computer or internet ready device to test with?Desktop is only computer I have. But will GET Cox to check internet,  not Wi-Fi, and cat5 or 6, don't know. But as I  wrote earlier, line is at LEAST 9 years old, good possibility it may be breaking down, been raining here for several days, and system has started working again. That is the problem. It comes and goes, but I think I know where to borrow a laptop and will try that.  Thanks for the ideas. Can you describe this mark, or take a picture of it?

Solve : Having issues with startup and chkdsk /f?

Answer»

My hard drive is failing and I regularly RUIN chkdsk /r to help manage it, today I decided to try chkdsk /f.  While that's normally all fine and DANDY, my computer screen is broken all to *censored* and I have no idea if it's actually running or not.  All I know is that it went to a blue screen (like it does in safe MODE) and there's POSSIBLY a black box, maybe chkdsk, running.  When it came up, if I hit escape a couple times it restarted my computer  but after hitting enter a couple of times the black screen came up.  So, can anyone tell me if this it's actually running?  I tried using F8 several times to restart my computer normally but it keeps coming back to this. If this is true, you have been living on borrowed time. If you know a hard disk is failing, you should replace it. If you do not have the money, then you will one day have a unuseable computer. It sounds like that day is here.
I SUPPOSE a better question might be this, as I believe that this is the case: How do I get a computer to stop launching in safe mode abs instead launch it normally, even when hitting f8 at and selecting the start Windows normally option seems to send it to safe mode.

I believe it's launched I safe mode due to the colors I see displaying on my monitor and the fact that the Wi-Fi doesn't activate (the button on my laptop stays orange, it never turns blue.)

This all started happening after I ran chkdsk /f C: in the administrator command prompt. You do not know if the OS is even running, in safe mode, or any mode. I suspect it is not.

Solve : Bulk addressing?

Answer»

When emailing a large list of persons, how do you get all the addresses in without having to type each one separately
(in Windows Live)Did you already READ what MS had to say about this?
How do I send a bulk email on Windows Live Mail
It seems that the limit is part of Live Mail. If so, you may wish to use an alternative e-mail service. A number of companies will offer free bulk  e-mail.

Is this for a limited number of recipients? Like  your extended family? If so, there are other ways to do it without breaking any rules.
The link below may HELP answer your question.
E-mail address limits.
Disclaimer. This information is subject to change.

Do your people want the e-mail?  Will they subscribe to a service you provide? If so, you can use a different method to keep them up-to-date.
Yes they do want the email as it is a NEWSLETTER I  have to send out each month.  To between 20 & 30 people.  So its not as tho I am sending out advertising material or anything to 1000s of people.

I had to type them in manually last month, surely there must be a quicker way.  I even have them slotted together under the club names, but that doesnt seem to work (for me, anyway)Here are a few work-around tricks.
Create serrate address books with factious categories.
Like this:
Buddies
Cousins
Friends
Guys
Humans
Jay-walkers
Kill-joys
Muskrats
Persons
Each list could have, say 10 e-mail address. You then send the  newsletter to the groups instead individuals. Saves sometime.

Also, set u p multiple email accounts for yourself. Each account would have its own limit as to how many outgoing message scan be sent in an hour.

Scheduled e-mail. If the limit is by number in an hours, use some kind of schedule to time groups to go out.

Get an economy web site that lets  you do RSS.
Here's an introduction to RSS.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RSS
As the name implies, it is as summary of the new contents of the website.
Your customers have to subscribe  to the site. Therefore, it is not unsolicited advertisement. A common practice is to send a new letter out every Thursday. Or what day you want. They get it in the e-mail as a desirable RSS feed.

You can get a economy web site for about $1 per month that can handle  your needs. No need to pay more.
Short list of cheap hosts:
List of 25  web jousts for $1 per month.
Read carefully!
Quote

“Your account has been abusing CPU resources for an extended period of time and has been disabled in order to ensure continued performance stability of the account and server. While we do limit each account to no more than 25% of a system’s CPU in our terms of service, we do not actively disable accounts until they greatly exceed that number, which is what happened in this case.”
Most will allow at least 1 GB per month bandwidth.
Hope that helps some.  Thanks Geek - I already had them listed under a category, but didn't know how to post all the names in one go.   It has been done by OTHERS in the past from the club, I'll ask them how they did it.

Thanks for your suggestions. Quote from: joodyanne on March 21, 2015, 05:21:56 PM

Do you have these persons, including their email address, entered into your Contacts in WLM (Windows Live Mail)?  If not, then you should do so.  That will eliminate the need to type the addresses each time you send.  And, besides entering individual contacts in your WLM Contacts, you can add Groups (of contacts).  Then, you can just select a Group and that will add the WHOLE group to the To: box in your outgoing emails.

Solve : Replace hardware or get new computer/.?

Answer»

I am no computer engineer should I replace my dis-functioning hardware driver or just get a new computer?. Which one of your hardware drivers is "dis-functioning"?Hello  thanks for your reply I should have mentioned I have a dell Inspiron 530 and the hard drive is needing replaced I only know this from the dell diagnosis I ran on the computer today. So my main problem is I have no sound coming from the computer even though the Realtek sound driver is GOOD.This is from dictation.
You say that something is wrong with your computer hardware. Please be more specific. Are you having trouble with a hard disk drive? Do you think your motherboard is overheating?
Is there something wrong with a video display? Have you recently added more hardware to your computer? Did you add unnecessary software to your computer?  Especially software that claims it can improve the performance of your software but in reality does NOTHING of the sort.
About buying a new computer. New computers are about $300 on up, unless you want to get just a very simple device that will log on to the Internet and not do much more. Are you talking about a laptop? Laptops are hard to repair. If you have a DESKTOP computer, the possibility of doing a suitable repair are very good if you can find the specific problem.
For people that are not mechanically inclined, or are afraid of trying to repair ELECTRONIC equipment, the better solution is to buy a used computer without the monitor and keyboard. This usually costs less and the shipping cost is much less because of the weight and size of the monitor. Is your monitor in good condition? If so, buying a used certified computer might be the best way to improve your computer experience.
But more details are needed before anyone here can give you good advice.
Many thanks for your reply. I myself think the best solution is to do the later part of your answer, as I said, I am no computer mechanic, the Screen moniter and key board and mouse all ok. I just believe that when you start opening computers then one problem can then lead to another if  you do something wrong.Kind regards firemountain.certified refurbished PC

Solve : Fixing a Sluggish Laptop?

Answer»

Hello everyone

I just "inherited" a used laptop from parts of my family and I'm trying to bringing it back to life. It's an old samsung rv711 with windows 7, and there is nothing major wrong with it; except that it is really slow. START up took a good 20+ minutes and even using it is still sluggish. I discussed this with a friend of mine and he suggested installing a new ssd hard drive and a fresh install of windows, but unfortunately I cannot get either of those at this time.

So I'm looking for other ways to improve. One idea I hit was trying to perform a factory reset. Would this be like reinstalling windows and perhaps fix the sluggish behavior? If replacing the Hard drive and/or performing a clean Windows Install are not options that are available to you, a factory reset will be the next best thing.

However the pre-installed software provided with many systems is, IMO, garbage. I have a Toshiba Satellite L300 which is significantly older and less POWERFUL than the system you have been given which I purchased new. The Windows Vista install it came with was completely unusable, and since it was Home Premium and I had an Ultimate License, I performed a clean install. The difference was collossal. Currently I have it running Windows 8.1 without issue and if I had to I could use it for my everyday computing tasks, whereas with the preinstalled software, it was practically unusable even for basic browsing. He might consider using Windows 8.1, but it would likely ruin the CURRENT installation.

Yeah, that is essentially what my friend said as well, about the woes of the preinstalled software. I might give the factory reset a go and if not, consider investing in a copy of Windows. Maybe leave the ssd drive out and just do a fresh install of windows without all the preinstalled stuff.

I do have one Windows 8 installation cd, which I bought for my current desktop, the first that I built from scratch, but just glancing at the terms of use it says quite explicitly that I can only run one copy of it, on one computer. Any idea if there is a way to extend the license? Like, buy the right to run it on a second computer, like my laptop? Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 27, 2015, 03:27:25 AM

That is not so much an issue, since nothing on the hard drive is ACTUALLY mine. I'm perfectly willing to wipe the hard drive but an evaluation version, in the END, needs to be turned into a full version anyway.I know this is the Windows thread, but did you consider trying a Linux distro? You can run it from the cd or from a flash drive without touching the hard drive. Zorin or Mint might be a perfect fit.I Didn't know about Zorin.

Zorin is considered light enough for laptops and older computers.
It looks like Windows 7, but you can readily change it.
A free download is available.

I did yes, and while I personally love linux, sadly I could not consider it a viable option, for a couple of reasons. For one, I am using MS Office on my desktop and I need the files I write, and have been writing for years now, to be compatible with the office on the laptop, and sadly there is always some incompatibility between Microsoft and free office files.

Secondly, I actually need and want to use the hard drive for various files, including documents and media, like music and images. A live CD or USB would let me run linux yes, but I actually need to also edit and copy files to and from the laptop, and that means I need the space of a real hard drive.

Solve : How to batch rename folders in Win 7??

Answer»

Does Win 7 have the ability to batch rename folders(not files, but folders), deleting the first 6 characters, and a space, but keeping the rest of the individual folder names?
For example:
Rename folders
000000 folder A
000001 folder B
000002 folder C
etc.....

to:
folder A
folder B
folder C
etc...

I know how to bulk rename, but it renames all the folders to the same base name, with increment numbers...which is not what I want.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks!

What technique are you familiar with (that you mention above)?Select all the files that you want to rename, right CLICK on one of them, change what you want to change, HIT enter. It will rename all your files to the SAME base name(that you just typed in), but add a       (1) after each file name, incrementing. So you end up with filename(1), filename(2), filename(3), etc.... which is not what I want. I want my base names to stay the same. Basically, I just want to remove the first 6 characters, and a space from each folder name. This reference might have something for you: HTTP://www.howtogeek.com/111859/how-to-batch-rename-files-in-windows-4-ways-to-rename-multiple-files/Thanks everyone, I got it all figured out.

Solve : Distribution of bginfo to domain PCs?

Answer»

Hi, I have been trying to come up with a way to distribute BGinfo to PCs and notebooks in my domain (total 500 units but for Windows 7 only).
We have 95% running on Windows 7, about 10 MACs and misc. For the BGinfo, I will only use on Windows 7.

I hope you can understand that I am very experienced in WinXP and THEREFORE some of my descriptions are WinXP based and do now know if it can be done in Win7.

1. Copy BGinfo into \\%hostname%\%windir%\resource\
2. copy "bginfo shortcut" into "all user" startup folder (in WinXP this was "C:\Documents and Settings\user\Start Menu\Programs\Startup"

I do not need this to be automated as I will run this manually but I hope to script can detect if BGinfo was previously copied and STOP if it detects.

I only have the following
- domain admin account credentials
- IP address of PCs and notebooks (obtain via HDCP, IP scanners etc)You may need to give more information.
What server type is the domain?
Is this something going to happen again? Every month? Every WEEK?
Can you physically do it from the domain server?

You may need to think about a distribution METHOD that is common to all platforms.
Is this something like a newsletter?  A Blog? A warning notice?
Do the users really want or need this?

BGinfo displays the system information on the desktop. It is much easier to get the information over the phone that way than to walk someone through it. We used it when I was tech support in a middle school. You can find more about it here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb897557.aspx.

What is the GOAL of why you are doing this ? ?
And as Geek stated more details...

Solve : Where did the sound go??

Answer»

Visiting daughter with Gateway NV75S32u LAPTOP, AMD Quad Core Proc A-3420M, Win 7, Norton Internet Security.

Yesterday the sound worked fine, both internal speakers, and a pair of logitech EXTERNAL speakers.

Last night I deleted several garbage programs that had gotten into her HD since my last visit.

This morning there was no sound at all, and the DVD wouldn't play movies.

I reset some things in the media player, MOVIE dvd's now play, but still no audio - from dvd's, from face book videos, from even WINDOWS sign on.

Any suggestions where to look next? I've been all over the various control panel icons.Cancel Cancel Cancel

Dumb guy here.

My daughter never logs off. She just shuts the top of the LAP top. I just did a proper shut down and restarted - known by all as REBOOTING.

Guess what - the sound is working fine again.

Thanks anyway.

Solve : Burn mp3 music files to CD for boom box?

Answer»

:'(I have 183 mp3 files on Win 7 hard drive. I purchased a Sony CFD-S50 boom BOX that plays MP3 files. I have used Nero 9 with Data CD selected for o/p. The first few files (about 12) played fine then started hearing a pop then in next song(s) pop, pause, bubbling sound, pop, pause, etc... this continued to next several songs till I got fed up and ejected the cd. So I tried using WIN7 Explorer and 'send to' my DVD/CD burner... played in boom box and got 2nd song 1st and then pauses. I'm very frustrated and don't KNOW what to try next. I thought maybe the boom box was faulty but played these o/p cds on the computer and got the same bad results as the boom box. I played the original MP3 files to make sure they were good and they were good. Any help WOULD be appreciated. I did a search for this topic and found one that turned into a wrestling match and the topic was closed.Your burner is failing...That is a good possibility but,  I've recently done back up of videos and pictures and the o/p is all OK. Hmmmm! The only other suspect then would be the media...try a different brand of CD/DVD's...Thank you HACKER, that seemed to be the problem. I used a Memorex and it's playing beautifully.

Solve : Default Email Not Installed Correctly?

Answer»

Trying to help my SIL. Have not had a chance to look for myself but here is what HAPPENED: she was trying to close an Excel spreadsheet and an IE 11 pop-up said it could not perform the operation because the default email client was not correctly installed. She clicked ok and shut down her PC. During shutdown, she got a message saying 47 programs had to be closed. After restart, she opened Excel and her changes had been saved so apparently everything worked ok despite the error message. I have no idea what the 47 open programs were. She does not have an email client on her PC as she does all of her email by logging onto her Verizon webmail account. She has Google Chrome set as her default browser. We had to do this because IE 11 will not communicate with Verizon for some unknown reason. Apparently this problem (IE 11/Verizon) is well known and discussed by both Verizon and MS. From what I have read, she will have to install an email client such as Win Live Mail and set that as default. However, what has changed that started this problem? Perhaps a recent Win 7 update? Also, do you think setting Chrome as default browser is causing the problem? Finally, what does IE 11 have to do with Excel? I am pretty sure she has MS Office 2010 Home and Student which does not have (I think) Outlook. Thanks. Quote

From what I have read, she will have to install an email client such as Win Live Mail and set that as default.
Why do you think that?  You said she accesses her mail via web browser, the webmail approach.  So, why do you think she needs to install an email client?

Nothing.

Was this a single occurrence or does it repeatedly happen?I was searching for an answer and several responses on the MS forums said you must have an email client installed in order to have a default client email. That made sense to me. I did ask her if any of the additions/changes she made on Excel involved an email address and one did. So, when I get my hands on her PC I will check to see what the mailto protocol default is. I am guessing the email correction she made in Excel prompted a mailto and IE went bonkers because it could not find it? For some reason she had 47 instances open...how PC savvy is she BTW ? ?

To be blunt, she knows absolutely nothing and her husband knows less. Her former SIL did everything and now I am trying to help. I do not know MUCH, but with the help I get here, I have been able to do some pretty amazing (to me, lol) stuff. Fortunately we both have the same OS. She has no EXTRA software installed so I can not imagine where the 47 open programs came from. If you opened a website and minimized it instead of closing it, would that be an open program?OK...just checkin...
She had alot of stuff runnin in the background it seems...however it could have simply been browser tabs and a bunch of Excel docs at once. Quote from: patio on April 02, 2015, 08:35:03 AM

Yes, but if Chrome is default, why is she getting an IE11 pop-up when she closes Excel? Quote from: artbuc on April 02, 2015, 08:14:37 AM

So, your SIL has email addresses in Excel, right?  That wasn't clear to me from your first post.

Right, I did not know when I made my first post. But after some research it seemed like manipulating emails in Excel might be relevant so I asked her about it. She told me the last batch of changes she had made just before the error message involved one email. Don't know exactly what she is doing but it has something to do with her HS reunion so I assume the Excel spreadsheet includes names, email addresses, etc.In that case (using Excel for an email list), installing an email client would probably be the best solution.  By installing an email program, i.e. client, Windows has an email-specific program to work with, a program it can recognize as the program needed when an email address in Excel, Word, etc. is clicked on.  Windows 7 did not come from Microsoft with a bundled email client, unlike previous version of Windows which had Outlook Express or Windows Mail (Windows Vista).  But, a free email client called Windows Live Mail can be downloaded from Microsoft.  A non-Microsoft alternative is an email client called Thunderbird, from Mozilla, the folks the make the Firefox browser.

Windows Live Mail is part of a larger package called Windows Essentials.  Thunderbird can be downloaded from https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/download.  Since your SIL is using MS Office Home and Student, I'm a bit inclined to recommend Windows Live Mail over Thunderbird.

If an email client is installed, the email account(s) will have to be set up in the email client.  In other words, simply installing the email client will not allow it to immediately start handling email. It does not know what email accounts you have until you tell it, i.e. setup the email account.  And, if she starts using an email client and continues to access the same email account via webmail (web browser), she needs to understand that sending email from webmail access will not cause those messages to appear in the email client since it is a separate program, assuming the email account is setup in the email client as a POP-type email account, which is quite common.  So, using the email client for all email activity might be the best approach, at least while she's involved in planning he HS class reunion.  Yes, I use Win Live and also have the same Verizon webmail as my SIL so I understand what you are saying. I suggested some time ago that she might WANT to try a client email on her desktop because it is much easier, imo, than having to log into Verizon. However, she wants everything to stay the same. I am concerned about Win Live on her PC as it is a very underpowered rig with only 512MB of RAM.

Not sure if this is important, but she was not trying to send an email from Excel. I believe she was just entering or changing an email address as an ENTRY on the spreadsheet. I was speculating that this prompted her PC to open email client and error message popped-up because she has no email client. Does this make sense?Solved with Win Live Mail and email account. Without the client email, clicking on an email link in Excel made the PC go wacky trying repeatedly to load IE. This is where the 47 programs came from. System becomes unresponsive and you have to force a shutdown. Thanks to all for your help.

Solve : Windows 7 logoff and restart issue (one user only)?

Answer»

I have recently got a strange issue that only affects one user (me!) on a Shuttle SFF PC running Windows 7 Professional. If,when LOGGED in as that user, I attempt to log off, hibernate or restart the PC, it shuts down instead (a hard shutdown). It is exactly as if I had selected 'Shut down' from the Start menu. This happens whether I do it from the Start Menu, or from a command PROMPT using shutdown.exe, also when a newly installed piece of software or Windows update asks to reboot the computer. I have to use the power button on the PC case front panel to bring the computer back up. If I want to hibernate or restart I can switch user and do it from another login.

I do not think it is a hardware issue because it does NOT happen:

When logged in as any of the other 3 users.
In the boot menu of a Grub4DOS bootable pen drive (can select restart and get a restart)
When running a Slax Linux LIVE CD (LIKEWISE can restart)

Any ideas? I have checked HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Shutdown and there are the 2 DWORDs I expect, LogoffSetting (=0) and ShutdownSetting (=3). I am not running Norton Antivirus!

Solve : Parallel windows installation?

What is Paralllel windows installation? Detail explaination is appreciated? Is this homework?
The term is not well understood. That is to say that a clear definition is not to be found. The term is not well used. The BEST answer is in your textook or your class notes. Or you can try to look it up on Google

What is Parallel windows installation?

Here is a video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ajv7tGDgwYs

It seems the term is used for MAC users who want to run Windows.

You should be aware that this kind of installation requires you to have a LEA gal version of Windows.
Geek - the term is VERY well understood. It means installing the same OS more than once on the same drive.Allean,
So then would this be the thing?

Or:
http://superuser.com/questions/203469/repair-and-parallel-installation-using-windows-7

These kinds of installation were possible before in Windows XP. Are they still possible with Windows 7? So far, all the websites I've seen say it requires at least that the OS be bootable (or maybe I misunderstood).
If it is possible, please enumerate the steps - my aim is to have a handy guide I can show to my colleagues if they ever need it. (So far we only have a few Windows 7 machines here in our office, and most of them are used by developers. EVERYONE else is still on XP.)
That  poster was TOLD that it is possible on Windows 7.

Therefore, more than one install of Windows on the same hard derive would be a parallel installation. - Right?

Solve : Samsung T1 Portable SSD not working as a boot drive?

Answer»

This is my first post and I'm not sure if this is the correct forum, but I can't find an alternative. It's not a hardware problem as the UNIT works perfectly. I just can't boot from my Samsung [USB] T1 Portable SSD.

I have always kept a cloned copy of my OS in a separate secure location away from my desktop. I have just cloned my copy of Windows 7 [Ultimate] to my new Samsung T1 SSD. The cloning with Macrium Reflect was no problem. I then altered the boot sequence in the BIOS to Samsung T1, CD, HDD. The T1 was easily recognised and I had no trouble in making it number 1 in the sequence. [I boot my Linux OS from a USB and have never had any problems with that procedure]

But, sadly, this is not the case with the T1. The boot sequence bypasses the USB option and goes straight through to an error screen where I can select a normal or SAFE boot for my Windows 7 OS.

So, my question, PLEASE, is what am I missing???

PS: I am aware of the Trim situation with a USB, but as I mentioned, this is not to be an active OS, just a static [safety backup] solution which will be overwritten every week or two. If I can ever get it to boot.
Did you have Macrium make the partition/drive active and bootable in the process ? ?...if not it won't work.Of interest...

While some versions of Linux may be booted from an external hard disk, no version of Windows except maybe PE support booting from an internal hard disk. This is by design. You won't be ABLE to do this.

Solve : Win7 HKU/HKCU Registry Issues?

Answer»

Hi All,

Looking for some help to a strange issue I'm experiencing.

To start with, I had a single user created on my WIN7 PC.

I have loaded on some software, where certain preferences SET within the software are stored in a registry key in HKU/HKCU.
I have set some values to '0' , both within the software and ALSO via RegEdit. I have confirmed the values are saved by checking RegEdit.

Each time I run the software however, It LOOKS as if the key is being re-created or overwritten and the values change back to '1'

I've checked permissions and ruled this out as being an issue, as I have full read and write access to this registry key.

If I run the software in compatibility mode for Vista SP2 or earlier, the issue does not occur.

If I create a new User account on the same PC and switch off compatibility mode, so it's running as a standard win7 app, the issue does not occur and any preferences I alter remain saved in the registry upon re-running the software. (confirmed in RegEdit)

What is going on with my User Account? Why will it work on my account only if I use Compatibility <=Vista SP2 ? Why does it work correctly on a different user account on same PC, without the need to run in compatibility mode?

Thanks in advance

Solve : Does such a redirection method exist - Win 7 64-bit?

Answer»

I have a game that I play on my Windows 7 system that wants to place large amounts of texture and other data into my user profile at C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle

While I specified specifically to install to my F: drive and leave C: free from game installation data, I confirmed that the game client was installed to my F: drive, but was NOTIFIED that C: was running low on disk space tonight when gaming and so I went to look for the cause. Finding my user profile to be huge, I dug deeper and found that the game client for the video game is saving texture and other large amounts of data here in my user profile and thats not good on a 40GB SSD that is jam packed to begin with Windows 7 64-bit eating up the MAJORITY of 40GB fully patched.

Looking at Google for a way to have the folder exist at C:\users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle for the game to run and be satisfied with a path that didnt really change but instead have any calls to files located at  C:\users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle to be directly passed to F:\GameTitle\GameTextures   the closest thing I could come up with was using the subst command , BUT this doesnt work the way I thought it would.

Here is what I tried with failure.

Moved the folder with all 1.6GB of data to F:\GameTitle\GameTextures
Created a local share to F:\GameTitle\GameTextures so it can be mapped
Mapped this share to Y: so when going to Y: its really F:\GameTitle\GameTextures
Tried to use Subst with
subst Y: C:\users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle
to bind C:\users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle to the destination path of Y: since subst doesnt ALLOW for you to basically state I want to join C:\users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle with F:\GameTitle\GameTextures

* Found out that I misinterpreted how subst works and so subst ACTUALLY needs to create a drive letter and can not use an already available drive letter as a redirect method

Anyone know of any work arounds for redirection like this?

Of course there is always the path of least resistance and basically rebuilding the system new with a larger SSD drive for C: but trying to avoid that on this system if POSSIBLE and find a redirection method if one exists even in 3rd party software form that I havent been able to locate yet but someone might be aware of here to share.

mklink is probably what you want.

Code: [Select]Creates a symbolic link.

MKLINK [[/D] | [/H] | [/J]] Link Target

/D      Creates a directory symbolic link.  Default is a file
                symbolic link.
/H      Creates a hard link instead of a symbolic link.
        /J      Creates a Directory Junction.
Link    specifies the new symbolic link name.
Target  specifies the path (relative or absolute) that the new link
                refers to.

In your case, you want to have the symbolic link as the folder in appdata. so you would move the "GameTitle" folder from C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local to somewhere else, say, F:\GameData\GameTitle. Then use:

Code: [Select]mklink /D "C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle" "F:\GameData\GameTitle"

The folder in Appdata should appear with a shortcut icon but it will be "transparent" to applications accessing anything inside C:\users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle that the real location is actually on another drive.

SWEET... Thanks BC

Btw to get this to work it required the command shell to be in admin mode. Also I had to delete the GameTitle folder at C:\Users\Dave\AppData\Local\GameTitle for the symbolic link to be created, otherwise it gives you an error message about unable to create a file. I should have copy/pasted it here to give exact syntax for the error, but the fix is to remove the GameTitle folder at the profile for the symbolic link to assume the identity of the folder location.

Now watching the size of F:\GameData\GameTitle to make sure that its writing changes to here. the more places you go to in the game the larger this gets. The game is a small install, but it caches artwork of the game and grows the more you explore and more unique textures in game etc which then get added to this local texture cache location.

Thanks so much man

Solve : Issue with reading a bootable windows 7 iso?

Answer»

Hi,

I have a windows 7 iso file which I burned on 2 dvd's, the first one using windows tool, and the second using imgburner.

Both CD's open up fine (on the laptop I'm using) and apparently contain all necessary files and folders :

The issue is that my new computer is unable to read either of those 2 cd's. I tried putting the CD reading in the top priority bracket on the BIOS, still didn't help.

All the newly built computer does is display a black screen with this text on it :
"Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key."

My mobo if that is of any help is a 970a-g46.

I'm really unsure about what to do next. Thanks in advance for anyone trying to help. What is 970a-g46?
What is the make and model of the target computer? (The one you what to boot with either DVD your made.)
Note: When you make a change to BIOS boot order, you have to SAVE it and exit. Then you may have to turn off the computer for 10 SECONDS and power on again. You see should see a message-
"Press any key to boot from DVD"
Press a key and wait.I built this computer myself, but I did make sure that all pieces were compatible with each other.

The motherboard is an msi 970a-g46 model. I can provide details about any other piece if that can help.

I forgot to mention the saving part in my topic starter, I did save and reset (pressing F10, and doing it manually through mobo settings).

I'm trying the reset after a 10 seconds shutdown right now. ...To no avail :/I assume the DVD for Windows 7 is a legit copy from a license. If it is not a licesed copy, the forum can not help you.
Are you able to boot any OS from DVD with y our new HOME assembled computer?
Have you any Linux CDs or DVDs ?

Windows 7, 8 and 10 must be put on DVDs or 4 GB flash drives.
There is a possibility that your DVD drive is not working right.
I have been assured by the guy from microbytes that the iso he provided me with is legit. I also bought the mentionned 2 dvds from there, both rw types and 4.7 Gb of capacity (the iso is 3.7 Gb).

No I do not have any other bootable CDs to test with at the time (except for the mobo and video card drivers, but they have nowhere to land without an OS).

I'm guessing that at this step into troubleshooting, it could be that it's the driver device itself that is causing the issue (as a very heplful user pointed out on chat, db100547) and the only way for me to test that is to borrow a bootable OS driver from someone. So...I'm trying to do that for the time being.I think the  MSI can boot from USB.
Many Linux dstros boot from CD or USB and are free.  That is an easy way to see if the build can boot up an OS. The Linux systems automatically find the best generic drives for Linux.
No, I do not mean to say you have to go Linux. Instead, it is an way way to test most of the hardware.
Here are some that can be put on a USB flash drive and do not write to the hard drive. They are all "live" versions that reside in RAM.

This video is now old, but it explains how to do it simply

It's interesting that all he gave you was an ISO since purchased copies of Windows 7 generally come with a DVD - How much did you pay for this copy of Windows and is there a Certificate of Authenticity sticker with a product key stuck to the PC CASE?

I don't know how it work and I don't know basics on my computer :pYour post is unclear. You don't format a computer, you format a hard drive - so it sounds as though you did want to perform a format. And it is virtually impossible to format your system drive accidentally - you have to verify / approve the command multiple TIMES before the system will do it. Please explain exactly what you did IN DETAIL and explain what it is you want to do now.I wanted to formate my computer, like I just bought it. So I used a USB key that I changed into a BOOTABLE device which I changed into my BIOS settings, in a part of the format windows ASKED me which hard drive I wanted to delete and I SELECTED them all by accident and as I remember one had the description named "System" after I changed the page my computer restarted and I kept getting stuck at the boot page, I removed my SATA and it started normally and than it freeze. I'm stuck there:/ALSO I don't have a second Pc.It's still not completely clear, but if I understand what you did you'll need to reinstall the OS. Boot to a Windows disc and start the installation procedure.

Solve : New Work Computer makes me press Ctrl+Alt+Del Before Login Screen?

Answer»

I have a brand new computer at work with Windows 7 Enterprise.  My old computer which I STILL have up and running is also W7 Enterprise.  Whenever I wake up my old computer from sleep or reboot, the first SCREEN it comes to is the login for my domain username and password.  On the new computer, the first screen is "press CTRL+ALT+DELTE to log on".  I do so, and it takes me to the login screen.

Why the difference?  It was suggested to me by a coworker that it is a security feature, but the screen tells me exactly how to GET to the logon screen, so how is that a security benefit?  The new pc's were already setup before they were given to us.  I have not been able to find the switch to control it in system properties or account properties. It is a security feature and it will probably be put in place by your system administrator across all machines on the network.

The idea is that a program could be built to run full screen on the PC and look exactly like the login BOX so you think that you are logging in but instead it STEALS your credentials.  Making you press Ctrl+Alt+Delete helps prevent this as if you were to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete at anything other than the login screen (i.e. this fake login screen program) it would cause Task Manager to appear.

In the end you'll get used to it very quickly, my PC at work does it and I pretty much press Ctrl+Alt+Delete without even thinking, often before I've even fully sat down!Okay, I see it now.  Thanks for the info.

Yes, I will get used to it quickly.  I used to love to press Ctrl+Alt+Del to reboot during the pure DOS days after I made changes to AUTOEXEC.BAT or other files at the command DOS prompt.

Solve : Unusually low FPS on Minecraft?

Answer»

On my brother's laptop Lenovo G570, like a month ago, Minecraft runned at 60 FPS. After 2 weeks, the FPS decreased at 30. Another 2 weeks, the FPS decreased at 10. He's using the same version every day. I tried updating Java, reinstalling video driver, reinstalling Minecraft and installing Optifine to decrease the settings. Nothing worked. What to do?Did he go in and alter the graphics settings in the game to be set to the max from the DEFAULT which would have been set at clean install?

I'd check to see if the settings have been set to the max to try to get better graphics in game with integrated gpu which sometimes dont work well. No, he didn't. The settings are the same as usual.I'd look in task manager when the game is running and see if anything else is hogging resources. Anything else running that is in the top 3 or 4 listed as consuming the most CPU. You can sort by percentage and have them listed from most to least. Any that are constantly a resource hog will stick in the top 4 usually with others below it shuffling as they are more or less a hog. Write down the name of the process that is eating up CPU etc.

Another thing to check into is that if the laptop runs hot it can throttle itself to stay cool so I would run speedfan on this and set a graph for CPU and GPU temps, play the game and then minimize of end game after 5 minutes and look back at the graph and make sure the temps are working in the cool enough zone. Any that spike up to beyond 65C usually indicate an issue with cooling. Laptops have been known to have cooling issues at times, however most of the newer ones are pretty good at remaining cool.

You already went for the #1 culprit most of the time which is video driver. Which as long as it was the correct one then this is not an issue. A resource hog other than Minecraft could be the cause of CPU latency that also would slow down the frame rate, or the laptop is heating up and due to modern electronics that try to PROTECT themselves from melt down, its Thermal Throttling itself ( lowering its own performance ) to avoid a melt down if running too hot.It can't run too hot! The laptop is capable of running the game ar 60 and over fps and in task manager are the normal processes. The coolers are OK. May it be malware?Malware is possible. When looking in task manager at processes you will want to make sure that you have clicked on the box "Show Processes from All Users" otherwise you can have something eating up CPU cycles that goes sight unseen. I'd suggest downloading and running malwarebytes from https://www.malwarebytes.org/lp/sem/5/?gclid=CLrfhMDfo8cCFcWPHwodf7AFXQ as well as what antivirus are you running on this SYSTEM and have you updated the definitions to be latest and performed a full system scan without any problems. As well as has this system ever been infected showing a positive detection for any problems within the last month to where other problems may be lurking from a trojan etc?

If temperatures are confirmed to be running cool with a tool like speedfan vs ASSUMED, video driver is correct, then its likely something that is stealing resources.

The quickest fix would be if you backup all data to an external drive or thumb drive and reload the system back to clean factory installation state in which its as clean as the day you took it out of the box to power it. This fixes the problems 99.999% of the time unless there is a hardware issue or MBR Virus etc.It had 44 viruses!!! And I told him to scan the computer at least once per month!Yup that would do it. If you have any problems cleaning out the problems let us know.

I am using Energenie UPS with AVR, 650 VA also - http://energenie.com/item.aspx?id=4780&lang=ro

I did memtest for 12 or 13 hours without errors, 14/15 passes.

Solve : Exe Crashes on Win7?

Answer»

Hello.

So the problem Im facing is almost the most .exe files crashing on Win7-32bit. It crashed for me and I reinstalled windows and motherboard drivers because I thought that was a problem. Everything was working fine on a new windows for 1 day, then the second day its happening again. What I've been using so far is Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer,Teamspeak 3,Counter Strike Global offensive. Shockwave in Chrome is crashing all the time and there is no way to fix it(tried all possible solutions to fix). Chrome is crashing time to time(once in an hour) so does the firefox and internet explorer too. Teamspeak 3 doesn't crashes very often but it does to once in day. And Counter Strike Global Offensive is crashing 1-2 time in an hour. Im not sure what to do fix this problem.

What I did so far and found no help/solution:
- Reinstalled Windows and let it automatically update and install my motherboard drivers(first time I installed it MANUALLY)
- Tested RAM's with windows Diagnostic Utility Tool and with Memtest86(no errors)
- Tested CPU with OCCT, pushed it to max and temperatures are OK.
- Tested GPU with MSI Afterburner and everything is fine
- Reinstalled GPU drivers but only switched between auto driver detect and manual download from NVIDIA site
- Scanned PC with Nortno and Anti Malware BYTES,nothing found
- Downclokced my CPU SINCE its clocked

What I think I might try:
- Install older version of GPU drivers
- Check HDD-s for bad sectors and errors
- Downgrading DirectX...I can see that installed DirectX on my OS is directx 11 and as far as I know my GPU doesnt support more than directx 10(I tried reinstalling the Windows again since there is no way to downgrade DirectX, and I checked the dxdiag and I already have DirectX11 on new windows.. I disconnected PC from internet before installing windows so I dont get how it installed directx automatically)
- Maybe try 64 bit windows!?

My PC specification:
- Gigabyte P35-DS3R Motherboard
- 3GB of RAM
- Nvidia GTS250 GPU
- Pentium R Dual Core CPU E5200 2.50GHz(clocked to 3.50Ghz)
- Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL 32bit 6.1(Build 7601)Remove overclocking & it won't crash anymore. Quote

Pentium R Dual Core CPU E5200 2.50GHz(clocked to 3.50Ghz)

WoW thats one extreme overclock for a Pentium E5200!!!!! I have a Pentium E5400 2.7Ghz system and best I could get was 3.1 Ghz without running into issues and I had to raise the memory voltage up to 2 Volts from 1.9V to get 3.1Ghz because with 1.9Volts I could only get 2.92Ghz and it would act up beyond that at 1.9Volts.

I agree to get rid of that overclock and as long as you didnt cook anything the issue should be gone. 3.5Ghz is greedy out of that E5200. Pushing it too hard and I am guessing you had to raise voltages a good amount to get there. Hopefully no damaged RAM sticks etc. Whats your temps running at that extreme overclock?

Solve : Vista reboots itself but not in safemode?

Answer»

Hi guys

Hoping someone can figure out my issue with my computer.  My Vista keeps rebooting itself.  I can do everything I want from safemode and its fine.
I doubt its a overheating issue because from a fresh start up after being off all night and in a very cool room it rebooted itself once it loaded the desktop screen. Its a Windows Vista Service pack 2
Dell Dimension DM061
Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz
Ram 5GB
32 bit OS Is your bios latest VERSION... I see here there is a bios fix http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=R157196.

NOTE: This is very dangerous if you have a failing power supply. For the fact that you stated its stable in safe mode I will assume the power supply is healthy. I'd verify your bios is the latest version and flash if your on an older version. This might fix your issue.

Additionally you claim to have 5GB RAM... is this really 3GB and a typo for 32-bit Vista?1) Go to System Properties - Advanced - Startup & Recovery Options and UNcheck "Automatically Restart"

2) Reboot

3) Download BlueScreenView:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html
unzip downloaded file and double CLICK on BlueScreenView.exe to run the program.
when scanning is done, go to EDIT - Select All
Go to FILE - SAVE Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all of the content, and paste it into your next reply

Thank you everyone for your speedy replies

I did upgrade the RAM a couple of years ago from 3 to 5gb

I will check what you told me to do and will come back as soon as its doneDave Im not sure about the BIOS update, it doesnt include Vista in the enviroments list even though it mentions my model number
 ALLAN
I followed your instructions but  no scanned occured.  The bluescreenview window is totally blank in both upper and lower box.Okay, just wanted to be sure the reboots weren't caused by blue screen errors.

If there is a bios upgrade available, go ahead and flash the bios as Dave suggested. Also, let's check the ram: download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.[/font]

If the results are good we'll move on to a selective startup and see if anything loading with Windows is the cause.
Ok I will reply back when its done  If it doesn't do it in safemode i'd suspect corrupt/improper drivers...INFO online suggests that going beyond 4GB while it might work is not really supported by Dells specs for this build. Here is info suggesting it might support up to 8GB.

memtest86 should really be run on this as Allan stated.

http://en.community.dell.com/what-do-i-buy/for_enterprise/f/4516/t/19034789

Additionally you stated:
Quote

Its a Windows Vista Service pack 2
Dell Dimension DM061
Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00 GHz 2.99 GHz
Ram 5GB
32 bit OS

So you aren't using all the RAM that might be addressed by system boards BIOS with a 32 bit OS.Ok I tried doing the BIOS update and making the reboot cd and it wont let me do it.  It just reboots.  Im going to try to make one on a friends laptop and try that unless you have any other suggestions to help meCheck Device Manager...any Yellow ??'s ? ?Yes there is under the Network Adapters

Microsoft 6to4 Adapter #39
Microsoft 6to4 Adapter #54

Solve : Frozen Laptop?

Answer»

Hi,

I have an HP Pavilion G6 Notebook running Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1.
It has a 64bit OS.
It's been working fine until all of a sudden it simply froze !
I waited for a few minutes for it to unfreeze but nothing happened so I just left if for about half an hour but it was still frozen when I returned.
The only way I was able to turn the laptop off was by holding down the power button which I was reluctant to do as I know this can cause problems to the HDD. (I had tried ctrl Alt Delete but this did not work)
I then turned on the laptop again, it rebooted but then eventually froze again so I had to force a shutdown.
After several attempts (some in safe mode) I was still unable to make the freeze go !
I tried BOOTING into recovery mode by pressing the ESC  key on bootup.
I tried to restore to a previous state but this did not work either.
After several attempts at this I decide to do a recovery back to factory defaults.
When rebooting it went to a black screen with text saying it was unable to load without the windows disk so Inserted this but it still showed the black screen with this same message.
I then did the recovery process again with the disk in the drive and it seemed to work but when I started to enter the details it asked for it froze again.
I left this over night but it was still frozen in the morning.
Can someone please help.
Thanks
Its either a bad HDD or RAM Problem I am guessing....

Do you have another computer to burn a CD or DVD or make a bootable thumb drive? If so I would boot this laptop off of memtest86 and make sure the RAM passed about 3 full tests... takes about an hour or so on most modern computers.

To test the HDD if you know the make of the HDD that is in this system you can make a bootable disc or usb drive to boot the system and test the HDD for errors. Since the system freezes up quickly you are unable to install any tools to it to test with that way.

If this system has a SSD instead of a HDD we need to know that as well as for there are other options with a SSD.I do have another laptop which I believe is the exact same spec (bought for my son)
How do I get a bootable thumb drive and how do I run the tests?
ThanksCan someone please tell me how to obtain and run memtest86.
Also how to check the HDD for errors. What do I need to do.
Thanks in advance
download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility.

Hard Drive Diagnostics:

http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure you select the tool which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), to make the CD bootable.
For Toshiba drives, see here: http://sdd.toshiba.com/main.aspx?Path=ServicesSupport/FujitsuDrivesUSandCanada/SoftwareUtilities#diagnostic
Hi Allan,
I started the memtest which lasted about 8mins and then the laptop simply switched off.
I noticed the core temp rising considerably and when I rebooted a message appeared saying that there was a thermal shutdown due to overheating.
Do you think this is the underlying problem?
I took the laptop into a new epair shop and the guy suggested he CLEANED the fan and then replace it if necessary. Is this SOMETHING I could do myself (with a bit of guidance). Is it possible the overheating has damaged other components..It usually shuts down before any other damage can happen. You can search YouTube about cleaning or changing the fan. Thanks Dave.
I have taken out the fan and it had about a 1cm thick layer of dust built up.
Is isopropanol the only cleaning liquid that can be used on the parts with thermal compound?
Is it imperative to clean these areas and reapply fresh compound ?
Thanks
Yes...Whilst I have the laptop open, is there anything else I should check?
Is it likely that the freezing was caused by a blocked fan or could there be something else causing it?I have just put the laptop back together, I went to turn it on but nothing happened ! The light on the laptop next to where the power cable goes into the laptop, turned red. I changed the battery but still the same thing happened.
What would cause this to happen. The error codes for the LED will be listed in the Manual...they are all different
Unfortunately the manual doesn't have anything of DETAIL about the power lights.
There is no mention of what  a red light means.  It only says when off its either off or hibernation. Great help that is 😉Solved the power issue. Simply RECONNECTED the internal cable which obviously wasn't put in properly.
Laptop boots up but still freezes after about 30 secs.
I did notice a message come up saying:

HP Battery Alert

The system has detected the storage capacity of the battery stated below to be very low. For optimal performance, this battery may need to be replaced.

Primary (internal)  battery (601)

Could this cause the laptop to freeze?

Solve : drivers for graphics card?

Answer»

My HDD packed up on my HP G56 laptop.
I put a new one in and installed WINDOWS 7 home.
The graphics card was detected as a standard VGA and the drivers were installed automatically as this.
How can I install the correct drivers for the graphic card. I don't know what card is in the laptop. Is there a WAY of finding this out without opening up the laptop?LOOK in Device Manager - Display Adapter

You should always obtain drivers for your laptop from the laptop's web site (HP in your case)Don't you still have the Driver CD that shipped with the laptop ? ?
If so re-install ALL drivers...chipset drivers 1st.

If you don't have the disc travel to the manuf. site...ENTER your Model # and OS...and grab them all.

Solve : Weirdly Slow PC?

Answer»

Helping someone out on their Win 7 64 bit.

It boots at a fairly normal speed, but apps take way forever to load. Like ten minutes to launch Firefox. Or a few minutes to open an Explorer WINDOW. Additionally, the little hard DRIVE light seems to never stop spinning.

Safe mode launches and runs super-fast and normal.

Ad Aware and Malware Bytes have found nothing.

I have disabled *censored* near everything in Startup and Services in MSCONFIG and have uninstalled a ton of STUFF, and still, no...

What do I need to look for?

First, what is the model of your Computer.
Is it a home built?
Desktop? Laptop?
Do you also have the 32 bit version of  Windows 7 on another hard drive?
If so, that would help with diagnostics by substitution.

It's a Compaq presario cq60 laptop about four or five years old. Don't think THERES a 32 bit on here... How would I know?Implore my remark about a 32 bit version.

Cam you isolate the problem?
You said it does  perform better in safe mode.
You say apps take long to load.
Have you done a check disk recently?

Run Check Disk from the Command Line to Find and Fix Errors. You can run Check Disk from the command line or within other utilities. At a command prompt, you can test the integrity of the E drive by typing the following command: chkdsk E:
Or for the main drive: chkdsk C:
If this takes a long time, you may have some issues with eh hard drive.
(On my PC it can take over a minute.  )

I have Vista, 64 processor, 3500+, 2.21 GHz, RAM 2 GB, 32-bit operating system.  I use Windows Photo Gallery for my pictures.  The problem I am having is when I try to EMAIL from Windows Photo Gallery, it sends 13 copies to I'm sending it to.  I have looked at help and they don't address this problem.  I've looked for any way to CHANGE the number of pictures that go out and I can't find it anywhere.  I will even copy the picture into Documents and email it from there, but still 13 go out.  Does anyone know how I can fix this besides getting a newer computer?

Thanks!

How do you know 13 copies of the picture go out?  Do you see 13 attachments to your email?  How do you do email?  Do you use Windows Mail, the email client, i.e. software, that came with Windows Vista, or some other email software, or do you do your email via web browser (e.g. Yahoo Mail, gmail, etc.)?

What virus and malware protection programs/apps are you using?  Why hello SOYBEAN, you always end up helping me!  I know 13 attachments to emails go out because who I send them to calls and tells me they get them 13 times but can open none of them.  I use Windows Mail that came on the computer with Vista.  When the screen comes up saying "Sending email", it will say then 4 of 13, 6 of 13, 9 of 13, are being sent.  This is a new thing, I haven't had this problem until just recently.  I use Microsoft Security Essentials and MalwareBytes on my computer.  I have done a thorough scan and malware scan within the last four days, so don't think that is it.  They both came up with no issues or ask to quarentine anything.
Well, I don't believe I have a good solution now.  Stay tuned; someone might have some ideas.

I did find a discussion of the same problem except the user was using Windows 7 and Windows Live Mail, which is very similar to Windows Mail (in Windows Vista).  See Windows live mail sending multiple copies Windows 7

With reference to a point in the above-cited reference, how large is that photo you want to send?  Do you know whether your email service has a limit on file size?  If your photo exceeds the file size limit, Windows Mail might be breaking the file into smaller parts.  As a test, try sending a substantially smaller photo file and see whether the same thing happens.

If you need to create a smaller photo file, you can open any photo in Paint and resize it (save the resized photo under a different name to avoid overwriting  your original).  And, you can probably do the same thing with Windows Photo Gallery. Thanks, I will try all those things.  I do know my server has a limit on file size, however, I send pictures and check "Best for Email" every time I send one.  This is a mess, wish I wasn't so computer illiterate!
Let me get this straight. The receiver gets 13 emails or the receiver gets one e-mail with 13 photos? How do you send these photos? Do you right-click and select Send to or to you create an e-mail and then insert the photo attachment?Sorry I haven't gotten back to you Super Dave, but a little under the weather.  Yes, I create a new email with an attachment, and the recipients are receiving 13 emails and they can't open them.  I have tried right-clicking to send, but the same thing happens.  I don't know how it got that way, but there should be some fix for this, I just cannot figure it out.
What are you using for your emails, Outlook, hotmail, gmail?Windows Mail through Comcast
How long has it been doing this? Please check your Address Book to make sure there are no duplication there. Did you try resetting the defaults.  Open MicroSoft Mail, click on tools, advanced and click on Restore Defaults.I did what you said.  I don't have duplicates in address book.  I clicked on Advanced and restored defaults, then sent an email.  I don't think it worked as it came up as sending 1 of 2, then 2 of 2, then said not CONNECTED.  I'll have to wait until tomorrow morning to ask my friend if she got 13 or more.  I'm about ready to throw this computer out.  All of a sudden it has started running slower, I've done all my virus and malware scans, found nothing and am just getting frustrated with it all.  It seems like some people "get it" with computers.  I must not be one of those people.  But I truly do appreciate the help you are giving me.  I'll get back in the morning after I talk to my friend. Please tell me exactly what scans you ran.Well, I talked to my friend and she got 13 emails with attachments she couldn't open.  She said it said MIME or something like that.  I use Microsoft Security Essentials, ran a full scan, took a long time.  Then I ran Malwarebytes anti-malware, full scan.  Both came  up with nothing.
Hi  debby,

I may have the answer for you since I'm also running Windows Mail (WinMail)
but on Win7 .

Check the following path
Menu Bar | Tools | Accounts | Mail Account | Properties | Advanced Tab. Uncheck: "Break apart messages.......".

(Mail Account is the one you're currently using - there may be more than 1 account listed)

Also check the total size of the pictures you're sending so that you don't exceed the limit of your ISP or mail provider or those of the recipient.
Leave room for email markup- about 15 % at least  eg  10 MB total- Pics no more than a little over 8 MB

A real gem of a picture resizer is RIOT   - single and batch operations

Good luck

Pete.

Windows Mail only came with the Windows Vista operating system; it came with no other version of Windows.  So, since you have Windows 7, you do not have Windows Mail.  You had to download and install your email program since Microsoft issued no email program as part of Windows 7.  Windows Live Mail is the email client that Windows 7 users could download and install, not Windows Mail.

This is not mean your advise about Windows Mail is worthless.  Some of the settings screens in Windows Mail and Windows Live Mail are very similar, perhaps even identical.

Solve : HELP! PC not booting after cat knocked it down!?

Answer»

It is a Lenovo ThinkPad W500 running Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit. My cat knocked it down while it was in sleep mode. No battery backup, as the laptop has a bad battery and I was using AC. The cat was running after getting freaked out, got caught on the charging cord, kept running, brought the charging cord down along with the the laptop it was plugged into. The laptop fell down on the ground covered with carpet about a fwithof where it was. Now, when I BOOT it up, it shows that classic command prompt black screen with that dash like character waiting until you enter a character, but since it is mid boot, it won't allow me to enter a character. I am behind 15 important Windows UPDATE, and my Windows Defender has been out of date for the past few weeks, but I did 8 Windows Updates today using my phone hotspot, 1 GB 3G data, and you can only do so much with that, partly used, even less. And some web browsing. I constantly put it in sleep mode at regular intervals when it was on to prevent overheating. I have a friend with a Win7 PC that shows that screen for 5-15 mins before boot up, hope that happened if anything happened to it and hope nothing got damaged, if anything at all. Nothing happening negaitive would be preferrable. CD or DVD fixes are out of the question, as I have had my DVD drive driver not working for the past few weeks. I do have access to USB flash drives, 8, 32, and 64 GB ones. USB 2.0-  my 8 GB, ONE 32 GB USB 3.0- one 32 GB, my 64 GB. Will try booting up later snd waiting longer in case it is a case of slow boot up. Please, HELP, as I need to do things on this computer! At least I have my data backed up, so I can use a friends computer. The computer is a laptop, if it helps. Scared to go into BIOS, s I do not know what to do in BIOS. Do I PRESS the blue ThinkVantage button to go into BIOS? I will try safe mode, etc., when I get instructions on how to.Sounds like the fall caused the HDD to fail.If you have an urgent job, borrow a computer from a friend. Or rent one.
The best advice I can give is to not be in a hurry.

If the  computer is important to you, you need to have a old computer for emergency use.  Older Lenovo ThinkPad laptops can be found on eBay for about $150. Some vendors even offer a 1 year warranty on a refurbished laptop.

If a vendor is near you, the shipping might be free and it swill get to you in  four to five days.

Or maybe you should have a old Desktop around for this kind of thing.

Also, if you backup ion a cloud storage, and is in a standard format,  you  can get to it using a tablet computer and a service like Google Docs. Or something like that. Like Microsoft AZURE Cloud. You can get a free account.

You can get a super cheap tablet with keyboard at Walmart or Stables. Like under $50 $70.. Good enough for doing documents in the cloud.

I really hope this is of some help.    My data is all backed up on flash drives, thank goodness. Because I have worled for a month on that project. Well, at least I have an old XP around for it. Should I try safe mode? How do I get into the BIOS to use safe mode? I would google it, but I am scared to in case I mess anything up further.I found something on the lenovo site. It said to press the Windows key and the R key, then press F8. When do I press it? Itms it advisiable? I want to get into BIOS and into sade mode. The computer has no antivirus besides an out of date Windows Defender, and Windows Firewall. And If I do a rental or borrow one, I have to be in a hurry! The project is due in a week! Thank goodness it is only a Wordpad one, which most Windows from 95 to the latest Win10 have. Correct me if I am wrong. Also, this paticular model of Thinkpad, it can run up to $2500 online. New. Woah. Used ones $50-$300. Pretty decent. But do they have Win7?It's more expensive because they aren't manufactured, and a "New" model means an unused or even unopened box system which is rather hard to find.

The "Windows Key R" instruction is a foldout which directs you to use that *within windows* to use msconfig to reboot into safe mode. Expand the "Press F8" Link and you'll see when you should press it.
How do I expand the press F8 link? What is misconfig and how do I use it to go ibto safe mode?Do I just press the F8 key alone? On another tech help site I am not a member of, if the F8 key wont work a member said in a thread that if the F8 key won't work, try pressing th F5 key. Alone still? Also, this was a diffrent model of lenovo, I think a newer one, and more RAM. So, is that sae?Your system isn't booting. you can't use MSConfig, as that is a procedure for when you can boot Windows.

On this page, "Press F8" has a arrow to it's left. If you click the link, that expands a large section describing what you actually do, including when you press F8.

Quote

Also, this was a diffrent model of lenovo, I think a newer one, and more RAM. So, is that sae?
It's a feature of Windows, not the laptop.

I don't think F5 does anything anymore. It certainly won't do anything if F8 doesn't.

It might not even be trying to boot into windows, because as I mentioned it's highly likely that the hard drive has been effectively destroyed. Fact is y ou almost certainly need a a new one. I don't see how Safe Mode would fix it. Neither will entering the BIOS and doing whatever it is you think you'd do there.

+ 1I just want to know how to get into safe mode and see if it will boot up. Sorry if there s an attitude, just frustrated.llfor WIn7, hitting F8 like a crazy person while the laptop boots should get you into Safe Mode.
you will need to work out if F8 is just F8 or Fn+F8.

but as stated early, if the machine won't boot, Safe Mode also will not be available as Safe Mode is a Windows thing, and Windows lives on the hard drive, and your hard drive is dead.

(PS, bet you wish the cat never came back.... just kidding....  but seriously, animals around PC's never end well. )If you have another PC with windows 10,  prepare a USB stick with Widows to go.
The Windows to go can boot up a system when the hard drive  will mot boot.
Of course, it the hard drive is badly damaged you will not get to your data.

Solve : Samsung TV being used as monitor via HDMI - suddenly changed resolution itself??

Answer»

Hi guys, I have searched and found the "Black borders on side of screen" help topic but no joy. I wondered if I could get some help.

I've been using this TV for a couple of years as a monitor for my PC as well as display for my Xbox with no problems, with the full display being used and sized correctly for 1366x768 all using HDMI connections. For some reason as I was just running Football Manager, I turned around for a second, turned back and my screen had changed resolution to show the black 3 inches or so at each side.

However the FM2014 game and Windows (7, Ultimate) seem to think the resolution is still set at 1366 x 768? I have just uninstalled the Nvidia driver and reinstalled to no effect, tried the stretch options in the Nvidia Control Panel and swapped HDMI ports on the TV too, all to no effect.

The TV uses all the display for the Xbox still too, so I don't think it's the TV. Graphics card is an old but trusty GeForce 610GT .

Really has me puzzled, and a little annoyed! Any ideas would be more than welcome. Cheers. Revert back to the card manuf. DRIVERS...what happens ? ?

Newer drivers are not always better drivers.Hi Patio. I don't have the original driver disc anymore, I think this driver is the only one available/compatible now as the graphics card and Windows 7 are getting pretty old.

But just to clarify - I'm running a whole new Windows 7 install from around 2 years ago, and it has been working fine with the same driver that I reinstalled tonight (I still had the download in my download folder!). I made no changes at all, the screen just changed itself in the blink of an eye.

Also I have Linux on a drive in this PC - I booted up Linux and it has the same screen size with the black edges as right now in Windows. I'm not very au fait with Linux but will also try changing the screen back from there tomorrow.    What is the model number of the TV? Quote

... just running Football Manager ...
Had you used this before?
Which Linux did you try?
What card ? ?BC_Programmer, TV is Samsung UE32F4000AW Worked fine with this exact set up and programs for almost 2 years. Is only at this screen resolution for the PC's HDMI connection - Xbox is full screen in all HDMI ports. THANKS.

Geek-9pm, Yes mate, have used that game with this Windows and exact set-up for years. Not used it with Linux. To be honest I've not done much with Linux, just had a LOOK and was thinking of learning the basics. Thanks.

patio, see original post - Nvidia Geforce 610GT. Thanks again.

While using the TV as the PC monitor in it's now squared view, if I press the source choice on the Tv remote it brings the menu up using the TV's full screen - NOT only the PC's limited square view. And the PC does this square view in both Windows and Linux, and Windows and Linux both think it's 1366 x 768 - NOT square!

This leads me to think it may probably be something on the video card? But no settings were changed etc, it just happened. And uninstalling/reinstalling/restarting etc has no effect.

It's beat me....  From what I can find some Graphics Cards straight-up don't support some resolutions directly and do unusual scaling.

Best I could find is to check Nvidia Control Panel => Adjust desktop size and position and then see what settings there are for "Scaling Settings" and what they are set to.Nvidia is not the card manuf...bc_programmer, yeah I tried all that already (sorry, I called it 'stretching' earlier) to no avail. When I try resizing the display, the width and height arrows are already at maximum, and scaling doesn't have any effect either no matter which option I choose.

Just cannot get my head around why it would suddenly change like this, totally unprompted, and it seems like I have no WAY to turn it back.

I'm gonna try it on another monitor/tv later and see what it does then. And, as you said before, the display resolution is being reported as 1366x768? There are a few very similar standard resolutions in that range such as 1360x768 as well as 1366x800 and 1360x800 as well so it is not entirely impossible you misread it.

The resolution ought to indicate "recommended" next to it as well, if the native resolution is being detected.

Solve : Unnacounted used space on Win7 laptop?

Answer»

Hello again. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad W500 running Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-bit. (Same one with overheating problem) My personal files account for about 10 - 20 GB used, th OS accounts for about 10 - 20 GB used also, so roughly I have 10 - 15 GB unaccounted for. What files are in this space, and where are they located?

HDD: 98 GB free out of 148 GB
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium SP1, 64-bit
RAM: 4 GB
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo T9400 2.53 Ghz
Graphics: ATI Mobility RADEON HD 3650 - 512 MB

Will try and provide additional specs if needed
What size is your page file... Paging/Virtual Memory can be a large value like that.... with 4GB of RAM your page file/virtual memory might be 6GB or more. Depends on if you set it to a custom value or if its windows managed size. Also if hibernation is enabled there will be a hiberfil.sys file equal to 75% or more of RAM size.there's a couple of great little utilities that may help TreeSize and WizTree.
I use and find WizTree that bit more user friendly, and definitely faster as it only goes as far a scanning the MFT rather than the whole drive.Um... I think the pagefile/hibernate.sys is Windows managed. Quote from: Coco423 on February 10, 2018, 10:11:48 AM

Um... I think the pagefile/hibernate.sys is Windows managed.

Pagefile can be set...

I turn hibernation off anyways...

You should also check System Restore points....that can be set as well...I notice you consider the OS and your personal files, but what about Programs?Programs? 0.5 - 1 GBThats a pretty low total for Programs...

At any rate nothin a new larger HDD won't fix...That is because I only have iTunes installed and a few iTunes optional components. Can't afford a larger HDD.Then turn off hibernation...and ADJUST the other components listed above accordingly.I use hibernation occasionaly to cool down the LAPTOP. I found what has been extra storage(more than it needs). I went into Windows Media Player, and found hundreds of duplicate tracks that I did not put on there. I know I son't have 14 GB of music. Hundreds of DUPLICATES somehow were created or got in there and used the storage! Somehow, wierdly, windows sounds in the Windows folder were recognized to be part ofmy music libary. Any ideas on how to get rid of the duplicate tracks? Any Windows sounds that were recognized are there to stay. Better safe than sorry.only you can decide which tracks are deemed 'duplicates'.
there are dup finder programs and if you trust those, then that's another option. And if he runs one of those on the entire HDD he will bork his Windows install...just sayin..

All this could be solved by learning the basics of file management...

Solve : How to 'release', or 'unlock' folders and files??

How to 'release', or 'unlock' FOLDERS and FILES?

Just recently, about 60% of the time,  I am unable to move and/or rename folders, I'm getting the following error msg:'The action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program. Close the folder or file and try again'.

1) I've closed/open Windows Explorer...same error.

2) I've closed all open programs, EXCEPT for Windows Explorer...same error.

3) I've rebooted...same error.

I haven't installed any new programs. I've checked my running programs in Task Manager, and found nothing that WOULD indicate that my folders or files are open in another program.

Is there a way of finding out if there are any program(s) being used on certain folders/files?
And, how to 'release', or 'unlock those folders and files?

Win7, 64bit.

Thanks!LockHunter is a program that can show you what programs have the file open which are preventing it from being moved or deleted.

Solve : Corrupted webio.dll?

My laptop can't go online (despite connected) and can't launch Google Chrome browser with the error message:

"C:\windows\system32\webio.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support."

I run the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) but it was not repaired:

"Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. Details are included in the CBS.Log %WINDIR%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."

I tried to replace the webio.dll from another computer but it said I need permission to replace the file. Are you an Administartor or in the Admin account on the computer?I'm logged in with the only user account on the laptop. As I checked from User Accounts, it's an Administrator. Are you running Win7 or Vista? You didn't state that in your first post. Anyways, do you have a Win7 or Vista CD depending on operating system to reinstall webio.dll?
I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium. It is an old laptop and I don't have the CD anymore. Tough luck. Are there any sources you know about that are reputable to redownload it? I suggest looking on Microsofts website and and your computer manufactures website. Not any of the other sites, unless abseloutely necessasary. Quote from: Coco423 on February 06, 2018, 07:16:05 PM

From what I have came across so far, Microsoft doesn't SEEM to offer that as a solution.  More tough luck. Have you tried reinstalling the driver for whatever networking device you are using if you are using one?Have you tried sfc /scannow?: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929833/use-the-system-file-checker-tool-to-repair-missing-or-corrupted-system Allan, I have, as mentioned in my original post.I would run sfc /scannow 3 or 4 times...re-booting after each.

Patio, I've run sfc/ scannow for no less than 10 times, with the same result.

I didn't restart after each run though. I'll try if that makes any difference. Quote from: Michael on February 07, 2018, 09:17:18 AM
Allan, I have, as mentioned in my original post.
Sorry - should have seen that. Do you by any chance have a restore point or, preferably, disc image from a time before the problem arose?

If not, try replacing the file in SAFE MODE. Quote from: Coco423 on February 06, 2018, 09:05:24 PM
Have you tried reinstalling the driver for whatever networking device you are using if you are using one?

The laptop was connected to wireless network all the time. So, I check the DELL website (the laptop is a Dell Inspiron 13) but there is only BIOS driver AVAILABLE for download. I found another driver by the adapter name Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, but during installation, it says no compatible HARDWARE is found.

System Restore was turned off before this, so no restore point, no disk image.

Replacing the file in Safe Mode still prompt for administrator permission.

Did you use safe mode with networking?

so its ten or nothing

No. You can use whatever version of Windows you want. They won't magically stop working. Over time NEWER software and hardware will EVENTUALLY no longer be compatible with it, but you aren't going to be blocked from using older releases.

Harry 48,
Good to see you again.

My current computer has Windows XP and Windows 10 , both 32 bit..
And my spare backup PC is Windows 7 and Window 10, 64 bit.

Amazon prime warms me that I have a outdated OS, but it5 still lets me WATCH vido with the right  browser. So I will keep using XP for awhile . The go to 7 if I need to.

The is one major App that only runs on Windows 10, so that is why I have Windows 10 on both machines.  Thank you, so I can keep using 7 for long enough thank you both for that I hate 10Harry, it is easy to change Windows 10 to look like Windows 7.Please me an easy way, I mean easy  It's as simple as downloading and installing Classic Shell. That will install your start button and from there everything will look like Windows 7. From the Start button you can access all your programs and important documents.
Classic Shell.

Solve : Can't log in because forgot password for Windows 7?

Answer»

This is my sisters laptop. My mom has am account on there. The PROBLEM is my mom forgot the password to her account so she can't log in to change the settings. My sisters account doesn't have a password but it's useless because my sister has a "restricted" account so in order to make any changes to the computer you need an administrator account which my mom has but forgot the password to. You can't unmute the sound let alone change the desktop wallpaper without it asking you for a password. My mom tried everything and eventually gave up trying to log in. I tried to reinstall the operating system but the CD/ DVD drive doesn't work. It makes noise when a CD is inserted but nothing loads not even a music CD will load up. Any ideas on how to get that password or how to reinstall the OS? My mom says to just reinstall the OS even if she loses everything but I can't with the CD drive not working. I tried the ISO to USB but that doesn't work either. Help is appreciated. We still don't know if it's a BIOS password...or a Win password...
It is a Windows password.
Quote

My sisters account doesn't have a password but it's useless
It is the parent that forgot here password. If it was BIOS password, nobody would log in. From the description the child has limited privileges. Smart Mom.
I would like to help, but it might be the child wanting to get into Mom's account.
Shall I call her Mom and be a tattle-tail?

i deleted your first POST Geek. Aside from anything else, it was completely illegible.

And there is nothing illegal about explaining how to reset a Windows password - if you Google it for Windows 7 you will get approximately 4 million (legal) results: https://www.google.com/search?q=forgot+windows+10+password&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8#q=forgot+windows+7+passwordOK. Fine by me.  Regardless of password or not I have been able to successfully install windows 7 on my old laptop many times. So does anyone have any idea why the CD drive on my sisters laptop makes noise when a CD is inserted but nothing pops up? I even searched in the my computer setting on Windows 7 and there is no CD icon there but the fact that it makes noise when a CD or DVD is inserted tells me there has to be a driver. Also since the CD drive is not working how do I force the computer to read my USB before loading up before the windows 7 loading SCREEN pops up? I've already checked the bios by pressing F10 but it doesn't show anything for USB. But the USB works once I'm on the desktop. If I could fix that or the CD drive problem I could reinstall the OS without any problems. I called HP and they verified the laptop but it's so old it came out with Windows Vista we've had it about 9 years so the warranty is done and they wanted $100 which I think is a bit much when I can fix the problem myself and save the money but anyhow it's an HP Pavilion dv6000 series laptop.Yes,that is too much to pay.
If you relay need the DVD player, you can buy an external model for about $25 or less from some vendors. They are small and run from the USB ports.
Also for about $160 you can buy a refurbished HP laptop that is as good or better than the HP model you have.
The most valuable thing about our HP laptop is that it has a license for Widows 7. The is no only my option, but there are many users who want to stick with windows 7 as longs then can.

Well I don't really need the DVD player I just need to reinstall Windows 7. I'm just trying to save buying a laptop as a last resort but since I know the laptop can be fixed I don't see the need at the moment to get a newer one.You also seem to misunderstand she's not a child anymore my mom is the one who asked me to unlock the computer in the first place so it wasn't my sister who's trying to log on. My mom gave her this computer during her freshmen highs Choo year so she could use it for school but my sister has graduated recently so she'll be using the laptop for college. Either way I'm just looking to reinstall the OS if possible so we don't have to shell out more money for another laptop.Other users have claimed success using F10 to adjust the BIOS boot options (system configurations->Boot Order) and adjusting USB HARDDRIVE to be the first in the list, where they've been successful booting a properly prepared USB Flash drive.(Allegedly there is a "USB DEVICE" option as well- this one doesn't work).

Does the Flash Drive you are trying to boot from properly on other systems? You should confirm it is bootable on another system just to make sure.

Regarding the disc drive problem:
Have you tried starting the computer with a bootable DVD/CD in the drive?

Note that the drive making sounds or spinning doesn't tell you much more other than the drive is getting power and the spindle motor is able to spin the drive. It could still have completely failed.

However, doing a bit of research, it seems that model of laptop is prone to an issue where the disc drive actually comes disconnected internally from the computer itself, so the system no longer sees it. It will still receive power so it will still do stuff if you insert or remove discs. At any rate, it may simply be a matter of reseating it. I found this straightforward video which covers it. It's mostly loosening one screw, extracting the drive, and then re-inserting it and refastening the screw. Well I tried to make USB Hard drive the first one in bios but that did not do anything for me. I unfortunately cannot test this on any other laptops because mines is the only one left and I am running Windows 10 on a Toshiba laptop. I can tell you this when you plug the USB in there is a red light that flashes on and off to let you know it is working and on the desktop it GIVES you a pop up with a list of options to view files and stuff. However when I plug the USB in and then power the laptop on the red light does not flash on and off until it reaches the log on screen for Windows 7. I tried my laptop same thing no red flashing light until I got to the Windows 10 log on screen.

At least I know the USB works since I am able to open it up on the desktop and see the files that are in there. As for the Bios in my Windows 10 laptop the startup screen did not give me any F2 or F10 or any of those F options to get into the bios screen. I tried them all one by one and it did not load the bios so I am not sure if Windows 10 just has no bios settings or what but either way I have no way of checking what you were saying about trying to load the OS using my USB on another computer.

As for the CD drive where did you see this video that shows you how to unscrew and screw in the CD/DVD drive? I am interested in trying that to see if that will fix the CD drive problem.I will change my optic.

Of course, I have not tried these. Just thought it would be easy rest the password rather that install over again.    Sorry I should have updated this last night. I was up until about 2 in the morning trying to get into the computer and about to bang my head up against a wall. But at about 2 in the morning I found a youtube video that shows you how to gain access to the locked account for when you forget the password. I was able to successfully get into the account without any problems. I was gonna try that Windows Password Recovery program but since the USB didn't want to load first thing when I power up the computer I didn't want to take my chances and pay for the program just in case so I found this guys youtube video that shows you how to do it without needing any software or programs and it worked so I am PLEASED and happy and better yet I didn't have to install the OS again so no one loses their files

Now about that CD/DVD drive. I'm still working on trying to fix it.Did you already specify the Make and Model?
You might find a free service manual somewhere on line.
Yes, it is better not to pay for something the might not work.

Glad to here you got back into an administrator account.

You're not going to fix a broken drive. Two ways to test it:

1) Within Windows, if you insert a CD does it show up in Explorer? If so, the drive works. If not:

2) Insert a bootable CD (and of course make sure the optical drive is the first device in the bios boot order) and reboot. Does the system see the cd at boot? If so, then there is a problem within the OS. If not, replace the drive
