Solve : Built-in camera?

Answer»

I have an Asus Eee Pc 1005HAG Win7/32bit with built-in camera, which is enabled in BIOS,i discovered the in-built camera was not operational about a month ago,i then sought for help from the manufacturer but i could not get a definite solution, advising me to check on the Asus support WEBSITE for a related problem, then i could get a clue to the solution, still i could not find one that addressed my case.
what i found out was that on my computer under Device manager camera does not show up,drop down Imaging device opening the flags,you find only Lexmark x422 driver with a yellow exclamation label,a problem indicator,you don't find USB 2.O ....webcam attachment which by my understanding DRIVERS for both these devices are missing and in that context and after consulting with Asus support again,i was referred to downloads site for my edition,i did download the camera drivers for edition Eee Pc 1005 HA but still they could not show up in Device manager and the camera did not function.when i tried to execute the COMPATIBILITY test for this camera driver,the compatibility wizard-shield crashed as indicated in the REPORT below;
An unexpected error has occurred. The troubleshooting wizard can't continue.
Package ID: PCW Diagnostic
Path: C:\windows\diagnostics\system\pcw

with these two issues i kindly need help.

Solve : ASUS Laptop not loading windows?

Answer»

I have a 3 year old ASUS X5DIJ series laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit sp1 (upgraded from vista equivalent). it runs IE 9 Norton 360 5.0 and has AOL 9.6 internet software installed.

For some time it has expereinced the random/intermittent problem of 'clicking fits' which freeze up the machine, requiring manual switch off and restart. various scans and virus checks came up with nothing and the machine can work fine for days sometimes between episodes. Today however after one such clicking episode it will no longer load/boot windows. The BIOS loads fine but after displaying 'Starting Windows' screen just goes to a black screen and mouse pointer (MOVEABLE). Nothing will change this (Control Alt Delete included) an the machine has to them be turned off manually.

I have tried loading the recovery discs i created when upgrading to Win7, the windows 7 installation disc and the original Vista recovery discs to no effect, the discs try to load but cannot and the same black screen returns.

I am wondering what the problem might be and how/if i can fix it. I am suspecting hard disc failure/problem, but as this has never happened to me before i do not know for sure. I am hoping it isnt as serious as this.

Please ask if you need any more info. Thanks. Do you mean you hear a clicking sound from the laptop when these freezes happen? This is often a sign of a failed hard disk. (The "click of death")

Do you mean you hear a clicking sound from the laptop when these freezes happen? This is often a sign of a failed hard disk. (The "click of death")

Yes the clicking started and the PC froze up. Could work again fine afterwards but not this time around. As Salmon Trout said, one would assume the clicking is coming from the hard drive. It has likely failed.

Sometimes they'll work for a bit after the clicking starts, then fail completely. This sounds like what you're describing. If the clicking is from the hard drive, it has failed.
So if the HDD has failed, i guess the only options would be to either replace the PC or the HDD. How easy would it be to replace the HDD and reload windows? As far as i can work out its a SATA type drive, 500GB. Seems a shame to chuck the whole machine if its just the HDD thats failed. The rest of the machine seems fine.

Thanks againWell, a quick Google shows used ones on Ebay for around $200. A 500 GB SATA drive for a laptop costs around $80. They are easy enough to fit, and if you have proper install disks you can reinstall Windows. Whether you want to rescue this machine or get a new one is your decision.
Thanks. Been looking at new HDDs. Not sure which make to go for. Any recomendations. Been on amazon and Toshiba HDDs have good reveiws.

So it should be fairly easy to load windows onto a new drive then? I have a manufacturers (asus) windows 7 upgrade disc as well as home produced recovery discs. I am guessing the Asus supplied windows disc will do the job?Quote from: richardf77 on June 14, 2012, 02:13:52 AM

An upgrade disk? Upgrade from what? To what? An upgrade disk generally will only work if it finds a qualifying product, for example a Windows 7 upgrade disk will look for a previous install of say Vista or XP. Not just that but there are "upgrade paths" so you cannot upgrade a Vista Home Basic install to Windows 7 Professional. If you have a blank disk it will ask for a qualifying product install disk. So what are these home produced recovery disks? Do they contain a system image (Windows 7 or what?) or do they work with a recovery partition (which won't be there anymore if you use a new disk).

To 'salmon Trout' Sorry i should have been more clear. The laptop originally came loaded with Vista but as this was just before 7 came out got a free upgrade to 7 later on. This is the 'upgrade disc' i referred to above. Looking at it again i am not so sure it is what i need to load 7 onto a new HDD, although when the OS got corrupted by virus last year and i used the disc to restore the OS, i recall clearly being given the option of recovering the existing installation or reformatting the drive and installing a fresh copy of 7 on the machine. I think this is what i was hoping would allow me to use it to install 7 on a new HDD.

I also have 3 sets of home made system recovery/system image discs. One for the original Vista OS, one for & made when i upgraded to 7 and a third made when i had to reload/recover the OS last year. I think these also allow for reformatting and fresh installation as well as reload/recovery of existing installation. If direct installation of 7 to a new hdd fails then might it be possible to go back and 'restore' vista to a new hdd and then upgrade to 7 as if it were the old hdd? In effect 'copying' the original HDD? I hope this makes sense. Still not quite 100% with the right terminology.Quote from: richardf77 on June 14, 2012, 09:03:32 AM

I believe it offered you the choice of installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 because it found a qualifying product (Windows 7 itself or Vista). This would not be present on a new (blank) hard drive. However it would not hurt to try this first.

I rather think this is the likeliest outcome. However try the recovery disk sets in reverse time order, i.e. the most recent one first, as it sounds as the 2 most recent ones may restore W7, and use the original Vista one as a last resort if the others don't work. Then you would apply the Windows 7 upgrade.

It makes perfect sense. Your grasp of the terminology SOUNDA absolutely fine to me.

I am suspecting hard disc failure/problem
I wonder if you have confirmed this by connecting the hard drive to another computer using a USB to IDE/SATA enclosure? Just to make sure the blackscreen are related or not.Quote from: jason2074 on June 14, 2012, 11:07:18 PM
I wonder if you have confirmed this by connecting the hard drive to another computer using a USB to IDE/SATA enclosure? Just to make sure the blackscreen are related or not.

No i havent as i dont have the required enclosure/connections. I am guessing what i would need is a standard case used to turn an internal HDD into an external HDD?Just wanted to give an update on the problem. Havent done much about it SINCE last posting but have recently got back to it again.

Current Situation; HDD aparently bust, recovery options no go. Bootable discs including manufacturer, home made recovery and a LINUX OS boot disc will not boot up the machine. Suspecting some other fault (with Optical Drive?).

Started looking into narrowing down the problems. Wanted to try in turn HDD and optical drives from another machine but both were incompatible. Thought about External Optical drives, either convering one from another machine or getting a ready made one. Got confused as to what to get so set aside idea for now.

I then remembered that Linux OS downloads could be installed on a USB stick drive and used to boot a PC. This would bypass the OD and get the machine booted. This i have done and it worked A1. The machine worked well booted from the stick and i was able to access the PC's HDD contents with no problem at all, so can easily recover the files at least.

This has left me confused though. If the HDD is kaput, how come i can access the files on it using USB booted Ubuntu OS? Does this mean the problem is not a HDD failure? What about the optical drive, does this test prove that is bust or again some other problem? Could the fault be software and not hardware?

Dont know what to do now. Should i try installing Ubuntu to the HDD and see what happens? Is there any WAY i can try to boot/reload windows without using the HDD or optical drive? Is it worth trying the drives (as external devices) on another machine?

Can anyone advise me please?

Solve : Application auto updating problem?

Answer»

Hello, hope you have an idea about this...
Up until about 2 months ago the following have been updating automatically, as I have set it to do: Java, Quicktime, ADOBE's Flashplayer & Air. For about past 3 months these updates download fine, but once get into installing they quit, saying Error Ocurred or Install was interupted, no real reasons stated. Tried saving the update and manually installing as Adminstrator, even though I am the Adminstrator, also tried in Safe Mode, got all the same results as above. Notified Java, Quicktime & Adobe, no help just said would look into it. Norton's FireWall is not the problem and SEES files as Safe. The Win7 Professional and Norton's INTERNET Security 2012 update automatically with no problems. No hardware or new software changes have been done & all drivers etc are up to date. I notice that you have the 64 bit version of win 7 installed. Are the versions of the programs that you are trying to update the 64 bit versions?truenorthThose application websites know what I have and tell me which one to use. Some are for both 32 & 64 bit. One says have to use 32 bit because my internet explorer is 32 bit. Also all these updated the products for 2 years that came on my PC. Haven't changed those products, just keeping them updated automatically, until now. Thanks anyway.Try temporarily disabling Norton to see if you can install an update. At the lower right of your screen next to your clock, right click the Norton icon and then click Disable AntiVirus Auto-Protect. Yes, of course I did that at the beginning of the problem and since. Solve : Automatic Minimizing of Game.?

What should i do in order to prevent this from happening???

What should i do in order to prevent this from happening???

Provide more INFORMATION.....Right-click the games shortcut, and choose the compatibility tab. Check off "Disable Desktop Composition".

Give that a try. I had that same problem with almost every single game until I started to change that option.I tried your idea of "Disable Desktop Composition" but yet no difference, still the game automatically minimizes.

For Example when i'm playing GTA Vice City on my PC, after around 20-30 second later the game just minimizes and the desktop appears.

So what do i NEED to do in order to prevent this from happening??Quote from: ahmedmuhs on July 01, 2012, 06:12:12 AM

Another cause could be malware, or some other background program. My backup program will cause any full-screen program to minimize regardless of the aforementioned setting, for example.Right click the game's shortcut and select properties. Under the shortcut tab make sure the run option is set to Normal window.

If that doesn't work, click start and type msconfig into the search box and press ENTER.
Click selective startup under the general tab.
Click to clear the load startup Items check box.
Click the services tab. Click on hide all microsoft services then click disable all then click OK.
Restart the computer and try launching your game.

"Item:" is the label of the dropdown. The "Selected items" is just what was highlighted on the image I found on the web. You do not have to choose that one. You choose the thing in the dropdown list that you wish to change. This could be "Icon" or "Menu" or "ToolTip" or whatever.

So I was going to write a program that lowers the volume of music when it SENSED incoming audio from skype, but then I learned that java doesn't do that. So I was wondering what does. Hate to sound uppity, but obviously some PROGRAMMING language does it, because mmsys.clp (windows sound control panel thingy) has an option for it. what language are the .clp's written in? \ how does it do that?

Thanks for the help mmsys.cpl is a control panel applet. It doesn't control anything...

The actual mixing is done at the kernel LEVEL. VOLUMES aren't changed

Solve : toshiba laptop sounds on but isnt?

Answer»

A couple weeks ago my computer stopped working. I closed it and when i opened it back up there was a black screen. It sounds like its on and the indicator lights are working. but the screen is black and when i plug it into an external screen like a tv it still does not work. I let it sit for a week or so and i plugged it back in to charge and it turned on. I used it for a couple minutes then closed it again. when i came back, it went back to not working again. Please help. Maybe the GPU CHIPSET is failing due to overheating as this intermittent problem from not booting or blackscreen indicates that its being faulty. The video chip means a motherboard or laptop replacement. If you can do further testing, TRY running a DIAGNOSTIC test for the hard DRIVE and memory modules since most laptop nowadays have these options.

Solve : How to format a drive without admin privileges - replacing vista with XP pro?

Answer»

Hello,

I've been given a tower that has vista installed on it. It's QUITE a FAST computer with 2Gb of ram. The person who GAVE it to me only knew the password of one of the users and I can't access the admin profile.

Ideally I want to flatten the drive and install XP PRO on it instead, as I plan to use the computer for audio/music making software only, absolutely nothing else. It'll be perfect for that as my software and music hardware works best with XP. It's also far more powerful than the software requires.

Could someone please tell me how I can access the drive and format/flatten it , either through the BIOS on in windows - if it's at all possible..? Baring in mind I can't log on as admin.

I only have basic PC knowledge and would need quite a simple, step-by-step guide.

Thanks for any help y'all can GIVE me.Boot to the XP CD and format it from setup. Thanks for that.

Do I need to interrupt normal set up and change the boot settings in BIOS to achieve that?In the bios you need to make the optical drive the first device in the boot order. Save the changes and exit bios.Great, thank you.

Gonna try that now...On behalf of BC Programmer and CH Forums, you're welcome

BTW, make sure you have all of the necessary XP drivers for your system (including the chipset driver).

Solve : No Sound On Windows Vista Home Premium?

1/ Checked if MUTE or not, but nothing was mute.
2/ Checked if volume is down, but volume was up.
3/ Checked if the jack has been plugged properly, again, everything was set properly.
4. I updated the driver, again, no sound.
5/ Tried Microsoft Fix It, again no problem detected.
6/ Went on device manager, no problem, the sound CARD is being detected correctly.

My motherboard is ASUS P5KPL-CM with onboard VIA sound card.

The back panels on my motherboard are, lime, black, pink, blue, black and violet in colors. I had Windows XP before, and I used the lime color one for my speaker cable. On Vista also I am doing the same. It should work, but why I am not having sound?

but info at wikihow was great.....

and patio you are as always right LIKE a rock. but politly i want to remind that my question was for win7 home basic not starter.

by the way jason as patio created some DOUBT in my mind....i wana clear it.....will all those stuffs mentioned above will be compatible with home basic edition. as there is no personalize options in right clik.and in same manner there may be others too.

or thae edition have itself boundations e.g. as aero effects are not for home basic. Some points:

Windows 7 is available in six different editions: Home Premium, Enterprise, Ultimate, Professional, Starter, and Home Basic.

Only Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate are widely available at retail.

The other editions focus on other markets, such as the developing world or enterprise use.

Windows 7 Starter is only available pre-installed on netbooks, basic laptops, etc. You can't buy it on a disk.

Windows 7 Home Basic is available in "emerging markets", in 141 different countries in the "developing world". Some Windows Aero options are excluded. Home Basic, along with other editions SOLD in emerging markets, include geographical activation restriction, which requires users to activate Windows within a certain region or country.

Customization options are missing from Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic edition. For example you can’t change your wallpapers and there is no “Personalize” option in the Desktop context menu.

There are 3rd party software apps which are described as allowing personalization of Starter and Home Basic. ONE example is "Personalization Panel for Windows 7 Starter and Windows 7 Home Basic". USING this may involve applying a patch to a Windows system file, uxtheme.dll. Such a patch will be reversed by a repair install or possibly by a Windows update. As with all unofficial patches and modifications, it should be done only by persons prepared to fix any problems encountered, and ideally after making a system backup.

Wow....thanks salmon trote.....
nice clearance......

Solve : flash player?

Help ! My flash player keeps crashing . I am not very good at this but ,I have Adobe flash 10 active x and flash 11 plugin ALSO I had to delete the adobe reader . I don't know what I am doing so please someone help .Internet Explorer or FIREFOX?
There was a PROBLEM with the v11 plugin for FF. The latest version has fixed it. 11.3.300.262
Thank You and do I need to reinstall reader ?Adobe Flash Player and Adobe Reader are separate things. Your issue is with Flash Player, so why are you now asking about Reader?

Since they are separate programs, you do not need to reinstall Reader unless have an issue directly related to it. I was asking because I don't know if I needed it !Do you not know what Adobe Reader is, what it's for? It's a PDF reader. Do you not know what PDF is and, therefore, not know whether you need a PDF reader? Here's an example of a document in PDF format: HTTP://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040.pdf?portlet=103 PDF is a common document format. So, I would think you want to have a PDF reader INSTALLED. Adobe Reader is commonly found on new computers, which leads many users to think it's the only PDF reader, just as they may think Internet Explorer is the only web browser. But, there are other PDF readers, just as there are other web browsers.

If Adobe Reader is working alright for you, then there's no need to change to another PDF reader. I use Foxit Reader and am pleased with it.

Solve : Low Vision Aid Windows 7?

Answer»

Ease of access in Windows 7 is very mediocre.
(It is the 32 BIT version. I suppose the 64 bit is the same.)
That is why I am so often using my old XP partition instead of Windows 7. I want to learn more about Windows 7, but the poor ease of access is not good enough for regular use. It creates eye and neck strain.
But with XP I can adjust everything until I am comfortable with it.

The Win 7 magnifier is mice, but not helpful when I do not have the other monitor running. Would be nice if there was a toggle for the magnifier son you could turn it on or off in one keystroke.

Windows 7 has big Icons. Nice. But the text under the icon is very tiny. I wound like to have larger icon text and just regular icons.

So, what could I do to make ease of access better in Windows 7 Home Premium? See here:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Make-the-text-on-your-screen-larger-or-smaller

Or instead of that, you could right click on your screen and choose personalize. At the bottom of the screen click on Window Color then click on advanced appearance settings. You will see a drop down box where you can choose whichever item you like and change the font, font size, color, bold or italic.

Press the Windows key along with the plus or minus key to zoom in or out.Magnifier shortcuts:

Windows key + the plus SIGN(+) Starts the magnifier

Windows key + plus sign(+) or minus sign(-) Zoom in or out

Ctrl+Alt+Space bar Preview the desktop in full-screen mode

Ctrl+Alt+F SWITCH to full-screen mode

Ctrl+Alt+L Switch to lens mode

Ctrl+Alt+D Switch to docked mode

Ctrl+Alt+I Invert colors

Ctrl+Alt+arrow keys Pan in the direction of the arrow keys

Ctrl+Alt+R Resize the lens

Windows key + ESC Exits Magnifier

1.Right-Click desktop->Personalize
2. Choose "Window Color" from along the bottom
3. Select "Advanced Appearance Settings".

You can change font sizes within this dialog. For example, if you wanted larger icon text, but wanted to leave the icons the same size, you would choose "Icon" from the "Item" combobox; then you can change the font and size. You can do this for quite a number of elements. You can also make caption buttons larger.

Just noticed JJ3000 already posted this.

Oh well. Also, it blabs about it not working for Aero, but that's a outright lie; most of the settings work for Aero (with only a few exceptions, such as setting the active/inactive title bar colour, for example)

I have a Microsoft Comfort Optical 3000 mouse which has a small red button on the left side where it can be pressed with the right thumb. Pressing it turns on Magnifier. Pressing it again turns Magnifier off.

I imagine some other mice have the feature or have a button which could be programmed to do this. Thanks to all! I didn't know you could do that in Windows 7.
Tonight I will TRY the suggestions and report back later.

Well you could do this two ways.
We could assume that your date is always the last 8 characters before the file extension and we could write a batch file to go off of that information.
We could also write a batch file based on the fact that you have an underscore before the date. So if that is the only underscore in the file name we could delimit the file name based on that commonality. Thanks for ur reply squashman .. can u give me some syntax or something ... so that i can build tat bat file... You need to tell me which example above is consistent with your data.if u give me a script with the second example.. i think i got a solution ...

then clearly i not read and understand ur post right. my appoligis on that. i want to tried to help. but since i'm bad in understand ur need. better stop trying now. but before i leave if u mean batch file renamer or such here a thing to do that. and please spare me if i'm wrong again this time.

this software can batch rename file. all u need to do is select the folder containing ur file n u can start the task by selecting method u want to use. it have delete word function that u can set from what to waht place u want to remove. it had preveiw that will showuthe end result before u finalize it. it easy to use.

Solve : Windows Aero...??

Hope I posted this under the right topic : I got a messsage about my PC being slow ; something about windows Aero & changing the color scheme, I think. The message disappeared before I got to read it again. Ok, my pc is slow sometimes, but it's dial-up !
Does this have something to do with the backgrounds I have installed ? They are Windows backgrounds.Dial-up shouldn't affect Windows behavior///however it will make the PC seem slow so perhaps you're equating one with another...Quote from: sherry! on June 09, 2012, 02:53:48 PM

I got a messsage about my pc being slow ; something about windows Aero & changing the color scheme, I think. ... Does this have something to do with the backgrounds I have installed ? They are Windows backgrounds.
Yes, it's a sign your computer is not quite capable of constantly running Aero. You can try changing backgrounds but it MIGHT not help since you are using Windows backgrounds, which are probably generally not as tasking as third-party backgrounds downloaded to your computer. So, you might need to keep Aero disabled.

I suspect you'll need to UPGRADE the graphics part of your system. Adding RAM might also help.

If you tell us more about your computer (make, model, hardware specs), the picture here may become clearer.

I have windows 7 Home Premium
64 Bit
RAM : 2.00GB
I had thought third-party backgounds could carry 'bugs' with it. How would I choose 'safe' ones ?
As for upgrading graphics, please EXPLAIN ?Windows Aero is the default Windows user interface in Vista and 7. Sometimes you'll get that notice if you have some of your Aero settings too high (Or if Windows thinks you have it too high) and will slow down your computer, because you computer has to "draw" a lot more special effects than the Windows Standard or Windows Classic user interface.
As for running slow, there is a difference between your dial up connection, and your computer's processing power. Your dial up connection connects you to the internet, where the speeds you will notice will be how fast a webpage loads, how fast images LOAD, ect ect. Even though your computer's processing power has a say on how fast those pages can load, your dial up connection will dictate most of it. Things where your dial up connection generally doesn't have a say in something (I.E: Browsing files on your computer) will be much faster than browsing the web, because dial up is very slow, but your computer isn't that slow.

AS FOR WINDOWS AERO.
Sorry, kinda lost track there for a bit. If you do think that your computer is slow, you can use the Windows Classic or Windows Standard interface design which will free up more resources for your computer to use elsewhere. If you want to change it, go to your task bar and click the Start button, go to Control Panel, click "Appearance and Personalization", then you can probably change some things there, but also click "Personalization". I would imagine you can figure out the rest . If this isn't right, sorry. I have Windows Vista, and it's slightly different in Windows 7.Shouldn't have hiccups with 2 G of RAM...something else is wrong...Quote

99.99% sure it's just a generic Windows notice message. I've gotten it before, so it wouldn't surprise me if it's the exact same thing this person got.

The Message is triggered when VRAM starts to run low.I've read all your answers, & will go from there regarding Windows backgrounds, etc. Thanks !

Solve : Batch File for Backing up User Folder and all the contents within?

Answer»

Hi!
I have Windows 7 Professional and I create a LOT of files. I have an on line business and I need to get a backup every night. I bought a $1400. Nas Black Hawk 8TB machine to do that for me but for some reason, there are always issues with it. I contacted the company Several times and I always end up having to delete the files and start over. I just can't do this anymore as it takes too much time. I am now just using it as a huge network drive to store me files on.
Here is what I need it to do:

1. I need is a batch file that I can run from the desktop to initially copy the entire User Folder, Diane-702X
2. Name it DianeBackUp folder with the date (ex. DianeBU 7-2012)
3. The modified files should be put in a new folder and named with the current date so that I can keep all the updated files day by day. (ex. BU 7-5-12)
4. I would LIKE to keep the modified files in their dated folder for at least 30 days and then the oldest of the modified files folder should be removed.
So after 30 days, the oldest folder will be removed and the others stay. This way I have 30 days of older files I can refer to if I need them.
5. Every 30 days, the entire folder, Diane-L702X, should be backed up again and the previous full backup folder should be deleted.
The modified files in their dated folders should not be effected by the full backup of the Diane-L702X folder.

My path to my folder is: C:/Users/Diane-L702X. There are several folder contained in the Diane-L702X folder and most of those have sub folders also.
I want it on the desktop so that I can click it everyday to run it but I would also like it to run as soon as my computer starts up.

The Network Server:
System Information
Device Name NAS-SERVER
LAN 1 IP Address 192.168.1.64
RAID5 RAID Type Raid 5

Path to the Network:
Network/NAS-SERVER/DataBackup
There is a user name and password to access the server

I hope someone out there can help me as the software from the expensive network backup does not work for me. You would think that there would be options to do a simple task. They do allow you to pick your folder and files but if they are oddly named or if it is a system file, it dies. It also does not allow some files. I think that I should be allowed to backup what files I want.

Diane

I think you would better off finding a better backup software. I have never heard of the one you have now. But there are plenty of really good free backup applications out there.

http://www.paragon-software.com/home/br-free/
http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html#freeware
http://www.cobiansoft.com/cobianbackup.htm

Doing what you want with a batch file is probably possible but would be very tedious.Really? I just thought it would be SOMETHING simple like this:
Copy c:\users\Diane-L702X to Network/nas-server/DianeBU with today date
user name: Password:
Copy c:\users\Diane-L702X to Network/nas-server/BU with todays date if the files were changed
Delete BU folder if older than 30 days
If DianeBU folder date is older than 30 days, delete it and then Copy c:\users\Diane-L702X to Network/nas-server/DianeBU with today date

I don't know the syntax but I thought it would be easy for a batch file pro. I will check out the software you listed.
Thanks!
DianeYou did ask for a batch file. Yet many here think that batch is not a wise choice when other tools are free and work so easy. Butch should be used for spacial cases with unusual conditions.

A free tool called 'Sync Toy' fro Microsoft makes regular automatic backups easy. It is used to copy one folder set into another folder set, possibly on a network server. It LOOKS for just the differences. The same in batch is rather involved. But you could if you would.

Solve : how to unschedule chkdsk on next boot??

ok so i accidently scheduled chkdsk on next boot a few DAYS ago

it says U have 10 seconds to press any KEY to skip chkdsk
but my keyboard doesnt light up... its weird but my keystrokes dont do anything, but the keyboard works on bios, but on chkdsk the lights are turned off. this is so freaking gay, help a bro out. win7 8gb ram 64x 500g hddTo stop it from happening, go to the start menu, hit run, type in "cmd" (Excluding the quotation marks) and type in

chkntfs /x c:

assuming C is your main hard drive, and the only hard drive that it's preforming CHKDSK on. If you have multiple drives, and it's preforming it on all of them, just add them in, so it looks like:

chkntfs /x c: d:

Hope it helps.well you can try this if you want to:

Go to your windows installed drive (hope it's C drive) Right CLICK go properties and tools and click the "Check Now" button it looks something like the Picture I attached.

Then check on the second options saying that "Scan for bad sectors and attempt to recover"

When you click start then it will ask for SCHEDULING on the next reboot then simply click "Cancel" it should stop your scheduled CHKDSK

hope it helps cause it helped me....

Solve : You do not Have Sufficient Access to yor Computer to Connect to Selected Printer?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

Just as the subject suggests that's the exact error a user get when he/she attempts to connect to a printer installed in a Print server running OS Windows Server 2008 R2 ENTERPRISE Edition. I asked our friend Google and I found this http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserverprint/thread/413acd5c-5606-4af6-b2d5-b903b806608d I followed the first STEP to no avail, but ignored the second step, reason being that I just CANT do that to 250 PCs in the NETWORK, so I am looking for a one time solution, instead of moving from one PC to the other, its quite tiresome and time consuming. Any help please is welcomed.

NOTE: All client PCs are running OS XP SP3.

Optionally, you could switch the host controller from AHCI/SATA to IDE/Compatible mode. You might get another idea in this thread as to switching to IDE when installing XP http://www.sevenforums.com/installation-setup/149065-dual-boot-windows-7-xp-installation-problem-2.html as gregrocker gave a link and 2 methods regarding installing AHCI.

XP x64 doesn't have an SP3.so what will happen if i put in a 32bit SP3 CD? it will update but convert to 32bit?Good afternoon comda and welcome back

No matter what your OS is XP, Vista, Windows 7 etc you never want to or force it to use any 32 bit updates / drivers etc when you have a 64 bit OS.

But more than likely it will not install because if you used / installed windows XP 64 bit and the update is 32 bit it will stop and not continue.

Hope this helps, Mike Quote from: comda on August 28, 2012, 12:20:37 PM
so what will happen if i put in a 32bit SP3 CD? it will update but convert to 32bit?

It won't work. Windows XP x64 doesn't have an SP3 because Windows XP x64 is not from the XP codebase, and is instead branched off from Windows Server 2003's codebase. (technically, Server 2003 SP1). XP x64 updates are distributed in unified packages with Server 2003 updates.

Latest SP for XP x64 (and 2003) is SP2. Solve : text very low to appear.?

Vista Home Premium. 2 Gig RAM
Perhaps you can help. I nightly do a crossword from an app for seniors on the computer. Over the last several nights, when the crossword is about three quarter COMPLETED, insertion of the text slows right down.It may be up to FIVE SECONDS prior to the inputted text appearing.
This doesn't happen with normal text input, as with typing this. Only with the crossword PROGRAM.
I ran a scan the other day and Malwarebytes located a Trojan , which I deleted.
Question is, have I got problems? or is this crossword program badly written.
I have also scanned with CC, Spybot and SuperantiSpyware and found no problems. Thank you in anticipation. It may be the program as you are not affected with other activities. I would check on task manager for any HIGH cpu usage when this happens. Thank you.H

Solve : Vaio Error?

Answer»

Hi everyone. I am running a Vaio VPCEB11FM laptop with Windows 7.

Yesterday after I did a big windows update I noticed a few errors on startup. They are:
Oobefcdregistration has stopped working.

SmartWi Utility Connection Error [exception from HRESULT: 0X8007007e] - this one pops up twice

I tried doing system restore but it was giving me a transient error. I was finally able to complete it in safe mode.

I ALSO have a problem with McAfee continuing to be deactivated (even though according to my online account it says it's CONNECTED fine).

Now that I did the system restore, I was able to finish reinstalling McAfee (but it won't let me activate it - maybe because I'm not connected to my home INTERNET network at the moment? I'll try again when I get home) but I'm still getting the errors on startup.

I did two virus scans and they both say the computer is clean. I'm also doing Vaio Care's "System Tuneup."

Thank you!
For this"exception from HRESULT: 0X8007007e" you might WANT to CHECK this out to see if it is applicable to your situation.

I have Windows 7..
I'm not good with computers, so that's why I'm here. Whenever I try to play a game (EXAMPLE: Sims 3) my computer works, but then suddenly it's like the screen shuts off. A variety of things have happened like the screen would go black, then it would come back on, or sometimes go black like three times in a row until it eventually shows the 'No Signal' block or sometimes 'Input not supported'. Or what has also happened is the screen went white and made a terrible sound, sometimes it's a bunch of colorful block stuff while it makes the noise. I've had the computer for about 6 years now and I've never 'upgraded' anything on it. Can someone help me out because it's driving me insane.

Computer system INFORMATION:
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E6550 @ 2.33GHz 2.33GHz

Failing or diminished RAM AVAILABILITY could also CAUSE this. What exactly do you want to do ? ?

To re-iterate, what kind of programming? Pretty MUCH any working computer can do programming... you don't exactly need a powerful system to program.

If you've NEVER programmed before, I suggest learning Python.

Solve : Booting new Netbook??

Answer»

(I'm not sure if this is the FORUM that this question fits in, please MOVE it if it isn't.)

I just bought an ACER Aspire ONE that's supposedly pre-installed with Windows 7. When I boot it (it's connected to ethernet) it says something about DHCP and then after a few seconds I get: PXE-E53 No boot filename received.

I believe that it's trying to boot from the internet. It doesn't do anything afterwards, just tells me to insert a boot disk and press any key to continue. I've pressed any key and the process just repeats.

What could be causing this problem? Can we assume that this is not a new machine?
Acer Aspire One, model # AO???Quote from: Computer_Commando on August 31, 2012, 05:12:05 PM

Can we assume that this is not a new machine?
Acer Aspire One, model # AO???

It's a 722.

(Is that the model #?)

Oh, and Inspire is a typo, FIXING thatOn most machines you would change the boot order in the BIOS, although, if it can't find the 1st boot (network), it should look for others. It's possible the the required boot partitions have been deleted by the previous owner.

Your netbook: http://support.acer.com/us/en/product/default.aspx?tab=1&modelId=3658

There is a Firmware PATCH (dated 5/15/12), listed under Patches, not BIOS. Doesn't say what it patches.

Probably best to contact Acer.

Solve : Samsung laptop only boots to Vista when disc is in the drive.?

Answer»

Hi all,

Here's hoping someone can help me please.

I have a Samsung R505 laptop that was brought to me for a simple Windows reinstall, I was even supplied with the original recovery media (always a bonus). The problem I am having is that after completing the Vista installation, which runs with no errors and goes to the desktop, and then rebooting the laptop, it will not boot without the Vista DISC in the DVD Drive. I have tried several HDD's, different CD Drive, different versions of Windows (original Vista and tried installing Win 7 and get exactly same result.), BIOS updates, swap tested RAM, nothing makes any difference, it will only boot to Windows if i leave the Vista, or other bootable disc, in the drive and ignore the 'Press any key to boot from CD' message. If the disc is ejected when the prompt is on screen, it will continue to boot normally, but will not boot if the disc is not in the drive when the laptop is 1st powered on.

There are no OPTIONS to change any relevant settings in BIOS. I have been repairing laptops for over 10 years and this is by far the biggest challenge to date.

If anyone else out there has any other ideas i would gladly try them, having exhausted everything i can think of.

Many thanks in advance.

TonyGood afternoon Saxon2012

Go into the bios and make sure the 1st boot device is the HD and then look and see if "network / pxe" booting is enabled if it is disable the PXE booting this will not disable the network devices it just will stop it from network booting.

Maybe the simple windows install was the reason of why you got it and there is a underlying issue that you were not made of.

If there is an OPTION for "booting from other devices"like e-sata. If they are there just disabling them also.

When you are booting is there any usb / Bluetooth devices plugged in.

Another thought is there any cards in the card reader?

If I can think of anything else I will let you know, Mike

So you are sure the mbr is correct (you've run fixboot and fixmbr?) and hd is first device in the bios boot order (I know it shouldn't matter, but given the circumstances of this problem......)?Vista Repair Install...Thanks for the responses guys,

However, none of the suggestions work. I have tried all of them before i resorted to asking for help (i hate being beat by a machine )

It has had 3 different HDD's fitted, so i can rule out a physical failure there, or even mbr issues. PXE boot is disabled by default, no eSata, no 'external' devices plugged in, even removed the DVD drive so there is only 1 physical device it can boot from, still fails.

Completely stumped and about to admit defeat

TonyModify the Boot Configuration Data (BCD) with BCDEdit.exe or Easy BCD.
Bootloader must be missing from HD.
http://neosmart.net/EasyBCD/

I suspect that you did not use the Recovery Partition & the recovery media corrupted the System Partition. Vista & Win7 do not have a boot.ini like XP had. They also have a System, Boot, (likely a Recovery), & Tools (maybe) Partitions.

[year+ old attachment deleted by admin]3 HDD's...probably part of the issue here...
Remove all but the Vista HDD and run the repair i linked to above....re-boot after.Quote from: patio on July 31, 2012, 07:15:05 PM

3 HDD's...probably part of the issue here...
Remove all but the Vista HDD and run the repair i linked to above....re-boot after.
It's a laptop, only 1 drive installed at a time.Commando,

Surely using 3 different HDD'S & different recovery media will rule out any problem with the BCD and/or recovery partition? but just to test the theory, i had already used Easy BCD, made no difference.

It's last chance saloon for this machine today, spent 4 days on it now and got nowhere. I am suspecting some kind of MB fault, just never seen anything like this before.

and Patio, Commando is right, it's a laptop so only ever ONE drive fitted at any one time.

If you haven't already done so, I would flash the BIOS with the latest version; 08VA, 5 Jan, 2010
http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/NP-R505-FA02UK-downloads

If you have, then try removing or disconnecting the CD drive.
Already updated BIOS to 08VA, and tried booting with DVD drive removed.

I've decided 4 days is enough and I'm giving up on it. Have come to the conclusion that there is some wierd kind of MB fault, so am giving it back to customer.

I'll give them the option that they can use it perfectly fine if they don't mind leaving the disc in the drive when booting.

Thanks for all your contributions and suggestions guys, and if anyone ever comes across a similar thing and finds a solution, please let me know just so I know what it was that beat me You are stating that the Vista Repair Install did not work ??Yes I am, Vista Install repair failed, as did Win 7 when i installed that.Hi Mate,

Did you manage to get this problem sorted ?

Are you talking about the windows dialog box to where you pick file name and save as in the next drop down

Please keep one thing in mind if the content is copyright protected that is against the law so just becareful.

Mike What EXACTLY does the box look like?

It is possible that you have some software installed on your laptop.

Usually like some downloading utilities like Internet download manager.

Is it,by any chance, a BLUE box with a green arrow, followed by text, "Download video from this page"?

Solve : I cloned my old hard drive to my new one?

Answer»

........but my pc is still booting under the old hard drive. How do I boot from the new drive? What changes need to be made to my BIOS etc.?
I've read that I need to make the new hard drive the 1st hard drive in the BIOS boot order??? Not sure how to do this....can someone provide me steps(SPECIFICS)

My PC:Dell
OS: Windows 7
Good evening Agent7573 and welcome to CH

Well I do not know what you used to clone the HD's and I do not know what style / interface your HD's are or what model the Dell PC is.

But if you have IDE hard drives make sure the jumpers are the same on both. Most common is master / SLAVE / CS (cable select). If the HD are CS move the OLD HD to the second connecter from the end and move the new HD from the second to the first connecter on the cable.

On ALL IDE drives the master has to be the last connecter on the cable the slave HD is always second one in from the end of the cable to avoid all issues.

If the HD are sata just plug in your new cloned HD to the sata connecter where the OLD HD was on the MoBo usally sata port 0 or 1 for boot drives. Sata device's will only have 1 device per cable. Leave the OLD HD disconnected go into the BIOS and make sure it is seen and then just boot up as normal when all is good shut down the PC and plug in your OLD HD to the sata connecter on the MoBo the BIOS will take care of the rest.

Please let us know how you make out, Mike

Good Evening and thanks for your REPLY; I cloned my HD's with Macrium Reflect-free edition; my Dell is a Optiplex GX280
The hard drives are SATAGood evening Agent7573 and welcome back to CH

Thank you for the info. I am all to familiar with the GX280.

If you are going to keep the old HD just switch the cables on the MoBo and then format your OLD HD if you are going to use it for data / back etc.

Hope this helps you, Mike

PS Kudos on doing this a lot of people would be gun SHY on this. One question to the thread starter, did you clone the whole C: to another physical HD or just an image on the same HD? And what programms have you used.Good morning Paci and welcome to CH

In the future if you have a suggestion / idea please contribute (just not in the AV / MALWARE section). But if you need to ask a question please do so by starting your own thread.

This way it is much easier to keep track of and will not be confusing to anyone on the forum.

Solve : Driver Backup?

Does anyone know if Win 7 will back up ones drivers please? I know there are gizmo's out there that will install and backup. Problem is you need to use the same gizmo everyti me. Which is ok if you stick to one gizmo. I don't think I've seen anyone use the word gizmo in three consecutive sentences.

System Restore will back up your driversI am not a lover of using the web to STORE mate. I would much rather store on my external hard drive. Is this the only way to backup drivers outside the various programs that are about bud? Good morning GLOOPS and welcome back to CH

Windows system restore is just what the name implies it is a tool (local tool / built into the OS) it allows you to restore your PC back to created restore points / older dates before major changes were made to the PC. So if something goes wrong you can roll the PC back in time.

To help you about system restore here is a link to MS http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/products/features/system-restore

Some PC manufactures will have a folder on the C drive that will contain PC drivers but I don't know what model PC you have so I REALLY can't tell you what it may be called. If you find that folder than you can save that folder if that is what you are talking about " Is this the only way to backup drivers outside the various programs that are about bud?"

Hope this helps you, Mike C:\WINDOWS\system32\Restore\rstrui.exe
Copy the Driver installation files to a external drive. Now you've successfully backed them up. yay.Well I do 'do' a system restore point quite frequently here, and I am pleased to say it has often been a great help to me. However, there have been occasions when the darned thing has refused, or said that it failed to do the restoration, which has left me not trusting it 100% i'm afraid guys!

Talking about this backing up and restoring divers. I would be interested to know if any of you guys have found a reliable gizmo? I use DriverMax myself .. the free version. I have tried one or two others but can't say that they impress me much. DriverMax doesn't but it delivers the goods albeit after a little time. Quote from: GLOOPS on August 27, 2012, 05:17:16 AM

You only need to read a couple pages of the doc.ok I am reading it now..I will let you knowOK does this mean I will loose all my programs and will have to reprogram like windows, Internet, etc..Config says it has Win7, correct?
Instructions are for Vista & XP, so expect some differences.

#2) System Restore returns your computer to an earlier operating state without
affecting data files. Use System Restore as the first solution for restoring
your operating system and preserving data files.

#3) Dell PC Restore by Symantec (available in Windows XP) and Dell Factory
Image Restore (available in Windows Vista) returns your hard drive to the
operating state it was in when you purchased the computer. Both
permanently delete all data on the hard drive and remove any programs
installed after you received the computer. Use Dell PC Restore or Dell
Factory Image Restore only if System Restore did not resolve your
operating system problem.Good evening egrace08

I do not know if you are aware of it the #6 option that you asked about the "Dell datasafe" usually give you 2 options 1 for local backup and 2 for online back up if you have a account with Dell when you bought the PC. If the Dell software partition is intact you can use the Datasafe to save your personal items (doc's / pictures / favorites etc) then IF you need to do a factory restore (considered a destructive restore) then you have all your stuff. This link will help explain it http://dslbdownload.datasafelocalbackup.com/dsldownload-en.html

Please KEEP in mind what "Computer_Commando" was telling on the different restore options that you have.

Hope this helps you, Mike Win7's Repair option leaves everything intact...including apps and data.
It's NOT restore.
Just a heads up.
