Solve : Buying a Product Key? |

Answer» I have an Update Win 7 pack. I have USED the 64 bit disc, and Prod. Key. Now I want to use the 'other' disc (32 bit) on a different PC, so will need to buy another Key. Is this the way to go, or will it be better/easier to just purchase another Win 7 'Upgrade'? If so, how do I go about getting another key? Solve : SMART report?? |
Answer» Last night I tried to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7 only to get stuck in a continual cycle of rebooting because it said the install hadn't succeeded. Anyway, I repaired it by booting from the Win7 disk, and moving some files to a TEMP file LOCATION, and am back to Vista (no data lost). Sadly, it seems that there are plenty of others who have been through this, and Microsoft is telling people like us that it is better to do a clean install rather than trying to custom install. |

Solve : .pst Outlook and Windows7? |
Answer» After a NEW install of Windows 7, I copied my archive.pst file from the XP drive to the 7 drive. Installed Office 2007 (which was on the XP drive). I tried to add the data file and am told "File access is denied. You do not have the permission required to access the file C:\archive.pst." I have made sure that I am the owner of the file. The only other thing I can think of is that the attributes didn't transfer. The only attribute I see is A (archive) and it won't let me add R or S. any suggestions?First of all, you don't want to USE the archive.pst, you want to copy the original (default name is Outlook.pst). SECOND, after doing so you should not have the same problem but if you do, take ownership (http://www.blogsdna.com/2173/add-take-ownership-option-in-right-click-context-menu-of-windows-7.htm)Only Elevated Applications can Access C:\, C:\windows, and C:\program files folders, regardless of the security set on those files. You get Easy Transfer Software Use In win Xp. |

Answer» on start up computer starts check disk, it locks up at 53%. NORTON 360 is installed, locks up when trying trying to clean registry. Virus scan locks up also. Diagnostics show problem with 6 to 4 ADAPTER. Is this a windows problem, or Norton , or possibly hard drive?Norton does interfere with the normal actions of some programs. In particular, Norton will not let some programs LATER the registry. This is a known issue. on start up computer starts check disk, it locks up at 53%. Norton 360 is installed, locks up when trying trying to clean registry. Virus scan locks up also. Diagnostics show problem with 6 to 4 adapter. Is this a windows problem, or Norton , or possibly hard drive? The problems you decide are almost certainly not related to Norton software. You said the system boots to autocheck which will not complete, is that correct? I'd like you to boot to checkdisk with error correction. In Windows 7 RUN a command prompt as administrator and enter the command chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command window and reboot. If checkdisk does not complete your HD is on the way out. You want to back up all critical data to off disk media as soon as possible. |

Solve : Windows 7 Boot Crash? |
Answer» So I installed a SCREEN capture driver on my laptop....... successfully, and it required me to restart to complete the installation. I chose to "Restart Later". My laptop fell off my bed and shut off (how did it shut off, I have no idea). So when I tried to boot, it said "Starting Windows.." for a few seconds, then the BSoD flashed and then it shut off; process repeats. So I installed a screen capture driver on my laptop Link? Here: http://www.splitmedialabs.com/vh-video-sdk/vh-screen-capture I had it before I upgraded to the RTM, and it worked fine. I GUESS the pending reboot screwed me over. Can you use F8 while booting Windows 7 and select "Disable automatic Reboot on System Failure"? This will allow you to see the BSOD- report back on what it says. Will do. Uhh I'm just curious, but is there a way to take a screenshot of it? **EDIT** So, wow. While scrolling to select "Disable automatic reboot on system failure," I noticed "Use last known good boot configuration" (or whatever). I chose the option you told me to first, and on the BSoD, there was an error relating to "vidstub.sys"; its quite obvious that that driver error was an effect of the pending reboot before. So then I [manually] rebooted and selected "Use last known good boot configuration" and it booted normally. My custom theme was a little screwed up (patched files were restored) but I re-did it. I required a reboot for AVG UPDATES and the patching of the theme files, so yeah. It rebooted without error after that too. So I'm all good Thanks a million, though! I totally didn't attempt that yesterday xDwell that's good news then! Excellent |

Solve : 64 bit OS? |
Answer» Quote from: killerb255 on March 02, 2010, 06:35:23 PM Actually, you can install unsigned drivers in Vista/7 x86. You can't install them in x64 unless you restart in unsigned driver mode (F8 startup menu, "Disable Driver Signature enforcement..."--granted this option is on the x86 F8 menu, it still lets users install unsigned drivers). Really? I didn't know that. I haven't used the 32-bit version of Vista or 7, though, only the 64-bit version, so I figured it was a OS feature that covered both platforms. Overall, malware writers are pretty crafty; For the most part the malware finds the new infection vector, and then a anti-malware tool is created to detect infections of that nature. Stuff like limited user accounts really helps prevent a lot of these potential "new" infection methods, since all the good elevation methods were plugged LONG ago.Quote from: drivenbywhat on March 01, 2010, 04:49:43 PM The main thing that is most noticeable in a 64bit os is that you can add more memory. I have one 64 bit machine running 32 bit Windows. I am thinking about changing it to 64 bit soon. I have 2 1GB memory modules installed, which in win32 shows as 2GB of memory. If I switch to 64 bit, does that mean I will have only 1GB of 64 bit memory? Quote from: jkolak on March 03, 2010, 04:56:54 AM I have one 64 bit machine running 32 bit Windows. I am thinking about changing it to 64 bit soon. haha no. the bit-width of the memory doesn't change the size of a byte. a byte is 8-bits. 32-bit processors since the 386 have been able to address a total RAM size of 2TB; however, chipset limitations prevented this (most 386's maxed out at 8MB or 16MB). The Win32 Limit of 4GB is more artificial then it is related to the actual ARCHITECTURE- it was a design decision based on the fact that hardly any hardware companies knew how to write a driver properly- and they crashed when LOADED at an address higher then 4GB (or something like that, I don't have my SysInternals Winternals book handy)- in order to make things work the best (and since even one GB at the time cost about a grand) they set a limit of 4GB for recognized memory. Linux has no issues with a 32-bit machine and more then 4GB of RAM, either. Since 64-bit meant hardware manufacturers had to rewrite their drivers anyway, MS changed the RULES so they actually had to pay attention- 64-bit operating System can handle any conceivable amount of RAM at this point (I think it goes into the Exabyte range).Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 03, 2010, 05:09:14 AM haha Sold! Switch to 64 it is! (as soon as I can get my apps and task load organized.... thanks for the info!)Quote from: jkolak on March 03, 2010, 07:16:52 AM Sold! Switch to 64 it is! (as soon as I can get my apps and task load organized.... thanks for the info!) Just make sure your apps can cope with x64 (about 95% of them can in WOW64). Drivers have to be 64-bit or else the stuff in QUESTION just won't work.64bit will depend on your motherboard support. You can check the manual if it's there or not. If you have 3GB RAM or less, upgrading to 64bit is a waste. Plus you will need to double it pretty much for an 32bit apps, 6GB RAM or more. So unless you are planning to buy more memory or have spares. You will have to update the OS to 64bit and also you will need updating all your windows drivers, some older network cards, sound cards, etc, might not support 64bit software (because of the so-called cost developing double) and have to be replaced. Check the websites for drivers first! My wireless network card refused to work on 64bit. The way the 32bit applications will work is just use the first half 32bit and leave the next half blank. Only 64bit apps and games will use the entire memory slot. I have Windows XP SP3 32bit (3GB RAM) and Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (6GB RAM). Both tweaked for gaming. The Windows XP SP3 32bit has better performance for gaming, Windows 7 is more multitasking applications.Quote The way the 32bit applications will work is just use the first half 32bit and leave the next half blank. Only 64bit apps and games will use the entire memory slot. This is pretty innaccurate...Quote from: Azzaboi on March 04, 2010, 12:26:31 PM If you have 3GB RAM or less, upgrading to 64bit is a waste. Plus you will need to double it pretty much for an 32bit apps, 6GB RAM or more. So unless you are planning to buy more memory or have spares. As is thisOk that was my misconception, 64-bit processes will take a little extra memory, that is a result of the memory pointers being a little bigger to address the larger amount of RAM, but not actual double in size. Vista doubles memory usage requirements over WinXP and Win7 uses much less. What will increase with 64-bit Windows is the amount of drive space needed for the operating system with a compatibility layer in place.Quote from: Azzaboi on March 05, 2010, 12:57:11 AM Ok that was my misconception, 64-bit processes will take a little extra memory, that is a result of the memory pointers being a little bigger to address the larger amount of RAM, but not actual double in size. saying it uses a "little" extra is an overstatement. Also, last time I checked, the new handle size of 64 bits is double the old one of 32-bits. These are the pointers- NOT the actual data. the actual data being pointed to will still consume the same amount. that 512MB that Office applications allocate for no reason when you start them will still be 512MB. (heh) Sure, each handle is now 4 bytes larger. Woopdee doo. AND- this only applies to programs that are compiled to 64-bit. 32-bit programs, which still constitute a vast majority of programs (Office is still purely 32-bit, for example) still use 32-bit handles as they did before, and consume no extra memory then they would running on win32. Also- Disk space being consumed by a 64-bit compiled application compared to the same application compiled as 32-bit is negligible, except in cases where the author has huge blocks within "#IF WIN32" or #IF WIN64", which would vary the compiled code size. the PE32+ format (which is used for 64-bit compiled Windows applications) is exactly the same as the PE format; in fact, the PE32+ format has a lot more in common with the PE format then the PE format did with the NE format. Quote In contrast to the Win32 exception handling, Win64 (both x64 and Itanium versions) uses table-based exception handling. No linked list of try data blocks is built on the stack. Instead, each Win64 executable contains a runtime function table. Each function table entry contains both the starting and ending address for the function, as well as the location of a rich set of data about exception-handling code in the function and the function's stack frame layout. See the IMAGE_RUNTIME_FUNCTION_ENTRY structure in WINNT.H and in the x64 SDK for the nitty-gritty on these structures. The table-based format used for SEH in win64 is both faster and consumes less memory then the win32 version. Source:http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/cc300794.aspx Here's the interesting bit; Any properly written Win32 program should be able to compile as a 64-bit application with no changes. The problem is the same as it was when 32-bit came around- moron programmers who decide, "well, golly gee, this pointer is the same as an INT type, so I'll save myself some typing by using INT instead of HWND or HDC or HANDLE..." and then, big surprise, 32-bit came around MS changed the HWND, HDC, and so on typedefs to now be 32-bit integer types, and whaddya know, the program stopped working. And at least then they had an excuse- it was the first major switch between bit widths (earlier versions switched between 8-bit and 16-bit, but nobody really cared then), and, the addition of hundreds of new APIs, a completely new interface, and so forth. the win32 to win64 switch has no such things. they added two functions though- and they are purely to determine if your running on a 64-bit machine from a 32-bit program (IsWOW64Process()). Quote Vista doubles memory usage requirements over WinXP and Win7 uses much less. That has absolutely nothing to do with win32 versus win64 memory consumption. And Windows 7 does not use much less then windows Vista. Quote from: Azzaboi on March 05, 2010, 12:57:11 AM What will increase with 64-bit Windows is the amount of drive space needed for the operating system with a compatibility layer in place.Yeah, almost 0.1 percent of my hard drive is consumed by my syswow64 folder. Hard drive space consumption is completely inconsequential. the disk space used by windows has increased a lot from the early days, but people seem to ignore the fact that nowadays games are coming on 3 disc-DVD sets and taking upwards of 60GB of disk space when they used to fit on a floppy disk. Dunno why the creators of those games don't get yelled at. On the other hand, consider that all the compatibility stuff for 16-bit applications has now been completely eradicated. Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 05, 2010, 01:37:24 AM Also, last time I checked, the new handle size of 64 bits is double the old one of 32-bits. These are the pointers- NOT the actual data. Thank you for clearing that up with me, as I always thought it was more. The reason being, I was planning to upgrade WinXP 32bit to Vista 64bit ages back but was informed not to by a professional as it will double your memory size. I mistook this as an issue with 64bit rather than system requirements for Vista. I'd stop taking his advice...I corrected what I said was wrong and why I said it... Your so wise, a guru, and would never make a mistake in your life patio... oh wait your using Vista (check the back of any game box for the system requirements - what you know double memory required over running it on WinXP).Quote oh wait your using VistaAnd....? I think you need to leave the attitude at the door. Not sure why you're taking it out on me... All i suggested was to stop listening to someone that gives innaccurate advice...period. |

Solve : Real batch scripting? |
Answer» for the past week I can not seem to find one site or any help on writing a script that will launch an exe. My only success was to create a batch file to open notepad. This is beyond frustrating I know there has to be a way to open other programs but nothing I do works. I keep getting the specified path is invalid or incorrect or there is no location etc all BS ANSWERS. ive got right file path drive folders names everything but nothing but notepad will open any program on my pc nothing with an exe will work other then that will someone help please. I need to figure this out cause I need to auto mate a floppy to reflash my bios but will be doing it blindly there will be no screen to see what is GOING on and there for need to know what are proper command lines to launch exe so whenboots and reads disk will autoexec the flash utility and install biosIt's probably due to UAC. I haven't tested it myself. However, if you're SAYING that notepad opens up, and notepad is an exe itself, then I see no reason why other exe's wouldn't open other than UAC stopping you. Obviously letting batch files run exe's on your pc without your approval wouldn't be very secured. Why do you want to flash the BIOS ? ? Hehe Patio.. a Boat anchor or a doorstop.. honestly I'm not on the lingo... well just ask anyone. Can you elaborate?Laptops that no longer function become doorstops... Desktops become boat anchors... |

Solve : CANNOT INSTALL NET 3.5 FRAMEWORK ON VISTA? |
Answer» I have been trying to install the net 3.5 or 4.5 framework in my Vista home premium 64 bit for about 2 weeks. I am trying to install a tax program and it requires it. I have been emailing a microsoft tech and it TAKES a week to respond back to me. I have tried all 3 of his suggestions WITHOUT success. The setup just stopps and give a generic 1603 error. Does anyone KNOW where the best support option is for me?Have you followed all the steps here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923100 ?yes, I have...Is it necessary to have alll the versions installed?Unless I'm mistaken, .net framework releases are NOT cumulative. Solve : Issues upgrading to Windows 7 Pro? |

Answer» Hi, Dont boot from dvd insert disc after you are in vista, then you can upgrade,or clean install,LOL - right you are - good catch When I try to boot the DVD the computer goes to a black screen, the DVD drive makes a "rough" sound, pauses, then BOOTS from the hard drive. I tried inserting the disk after going into my admin account, the program starts up for a split second, I see a blip of the front page for the upgrade disk, then the program completely shuts down. Thanks for all your responses so far too! Maybe your DVD drive is bad, or the DVD disk is bad.I have not had any other issues with the drive to date, so I guess you're right about the DVD. Solve : Copying stuff from Windows XP 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit? |
Answer» I'm upgrading. I have a program with associated files that only loads on Windows XP. The NEW VERSION will run on 64 bit Windows 7. How do I get the 'stuff' on my Windows XP over to the 64 bit platform so I can upgrade it? Alternatively, if I upgrade it on the XP platform, how do I then transfer it over to the 64 bit platform?1) Install the software into the new OS You might want to contact the software provider and see if they want to sell you the original 64 bit version at a discount since you have the upgrade.Guess you and I were posting at the same time.May I ask a question. The 32 bit version of the program can not be installed in the 64 bit windows 7. Is that right? That is CORRECT. Won't install on any OS after Windows XP. In fact, when I BOUGHT it, I had to drag out an old computer that still had XP on it.1) Install newer version of program on Windows 7 x64. 2) Find the data files or data directory that the older program uses on your Windows XP x86 PC. 3) Copy that data directory to a flash drive or some other device. 4) Unplug flash drive or said other device. 5) Plug flash drive/other device in question into your Windows 7 x64 machine. 6) Find the equivalent data directory for your new program. 7) Copy files from flash drive/device to the new directory. Launch program 9) 10) Hope for profit! For steps 3-8, you'll probably have to contact the program vendor for assistance if migration goes beyond copying the data directories or data files from one PC to another (i.e.: If there are SQL or other databases involved). Also, step one will not work- if I understand the issue correctly, the new version is an "upgrade" and requires the older version to be installed, first.IN Windows 7 Professional and Ultimate you get a free download of "XP Mode" which is (1) Microsoft Virtual PC and (2) a preactivated installation of XP Professional on a vhd virtual disk. I have this and am running lots of XP-only software. If you GO this route, you can go to vmlite.com and use "My Old PC" to make a virtual hard drive from your current XP drive and use that instead of Microsoft's Virtual Hard Drive. If your CPU does not support MS XP Mode hardware virtualization requirements, you can also use VMLite's XP Mode instead of Microsoft's. VMLite is a derivative of VirtualBox. Installation is really easy.Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 02, 2010, 07:24:56 PM Also, step one will not work- if I understand the issue correctly, the new version is an "upgrade" and requires the older version to be installed, first. The steps I've posted assumed that CowboyDoc has two separate machines: one x86 Windows XP machine, and one new machine in which he is going to install (or has installed) Windows 7 x64 on. To address the upgrade issue, you can't do an upgrade-install from Windows XP to Windows 7, nor can you do an upgrade install from x86 to x64 or vice versa. However, you can start a clean install with the upgrade disc and feed it the product key from a previous XP or Vista install to make it work. Once that's done, then proceed with the steps I posted previously. |

Solve : Open With prompt for programs Like IE, not for files? |
Answer» No matter what I open even programs my computer asks me what to open it with such as virus scan, IE, AIM, FIREFOX. These are programs and therefore need no program to open them. I tried to restart it in safemode and I lose my wireless internet and still get the prompt for "open with" and thus can not run my virus scan. I can get on the internet still if not in safe mode but not on AIM and can't open virus scan. but is it possible I deleted something on my computer that could cause this?I don't know. What did you do just before the problem arose? This particular problem cannot occur spontaneously. If it's not malware then you did something - what did you do?BTW, if it's just .exe files that can't open (programs) download the .exe file fix and run it: http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/105/1/File-association-fixes-for-Windows-Vista.htmlI do not remember doing anything, I am running virus scan, malware and adaware now again hoping it helps somehow this time. AdAware is useless. Download and run MalwareBytes. And did you see my last post above re: .exe file?I have both programs on my computer, malwarebytes really slows down and messes with my copmuter when its running so I don't like to USE it too much. The exe fix fixed the problem it would appear though!!!!! Thanks so much! You're welcome. But DO use MalwareBytes for scanning your system. Let it run when you're not sitting in front of it. Again, AdAware is useless. MalwareBytes works!!! |

Solve : new 1TB HDD won't show up in Bios/W7? |
Answer» It all started LAST week when I didn't USE my PC for a few days... all the sudden my 640gb WD internal disappeared from Windows Vista 64... came to the conclusion maybe my HDD had failed, so this week I bought a new WD 1TB HDD internal, and a copy of Windows 7, formatted my existing Samsung 160gb, installed Windows 7-64 on it, but my 1TB drive won't show up in bios, windows, anything. I'm confused? When I also have the 1TB connected Windows 7 takes forever to load up on my comp. When I unplug it my PC works just fine. HELP? I've even swapped the 2 SATA CABLES I have and same problem. Both drives are powered, it will detect the 1TB right when I turn on the PC but then says 3rd master fail, and doesn't show up in BIOS if that makes sense? You did not say what make of computer you have. |

Solve : Turning off McAfee trial version firewall and turning on Windows 7 firewall? |
Answer» What Reimage? Regarding downloads, first I mistakenly downloaded the Spware Doctor. If you click on the link you provided in your response, you first see a large headline: McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 3.0.128.8. Just below it, to the right you see a blue Download icon. WRONG!! It's the SpyDoctor program.Internet may be a dangerous place. You have to check 3 times, before you click on anything. Quote Error 109: Not able to extract InCompatSw.iniAgain, same issue. Watch what you click on. The above error indicates, you downloaded wrong Comodo version. 32-bit, instead of 64-bit, or vice versa: http://forums.comodo.com/report-comodo-forum-web-site-issues/error-109not-able-to-extract-incompactswini-t47488.0.html;msg341768#msg341768What does it mean "32 bit" as compared to "64 bit" and how do I determine which one I need?Click Start and in "Start search" type in: winver Press Enter. Pop-up window will open. If it DOES NOT say 64-bit, you have 32-bit Windows version.Ok. I have 32-bit. I downloaded 32-bit version. I have Internet Explorer. Still get the same error message.Forget Comodo then and go for Avira, or Avast, plus Windows firewall. It turns out I have a 64-bit system. While there is no mention of it in the pop-up you mentioned Quote from: Broni on March 03, 2010, 12:01:30 PM Click Start and in "Start search" type in: When I went into CONTROL PANEL and then System it shows I have a 64-bit OS. Solve : Won't connect to internet? |
Answer» Hey. I've had my laptop for about a year, and it's RUNNING vista home premium. It's never really had a problem before, but recently, after I had logged into windows, it wouldn't connect to the internet. This has happened about 4 times now. I'm also on a wireless connection. When I go to "NETWORK" in the start menu and check it out, it SAYS there's a cable unplugged, but I go down and check my router, and nothing is unplugged. So I have to unplug the router, wait 10 seconds, then plug it back in. THEN my internet will work. |

Solve : Programs Won't Uninstall...too many apps? |
Answer» Then what makes you think all these apps are installed ? ? If I double-click an entry in the P&Fs it doesn't do anything How do you mean "doesn't do anything"? do you LITERALLY mean that nothing happens? try right-clicking and selecting "uninstall". Additionally- what do you hope to gain by uninstalling anything- note at the bottom it says "currently installed programs 104 programs installed, total size 2.11GB" so you probably won't get very much free space simply by uninstalling programs anyway. BC - I'm GUESSING they are left over entries of apps that are not installed. Not sure how it HAPPENED for so many apps, but I think he just wants to "clean out" the phantom entries.Quote from: Allan on March 03, 2010, 05:51:48 AM BC - I'm guessing they are left over entries of apps that are not installed. Not sure how it happened for so many apps, but I think he just wants to "clean out" the phantom entries. Ahh... well, if that's the case, ccleaner posesses a "tools" item labelled "uninstall" that allows you to do everything you can do in the uninstall applet, including removing orphaned entries. Yep - he said he tried ccleaner. I POSTED a link to several methods including direct registry editing as a last option. |

Solve : Windows Media Player Network ...? |

Answer» I recently upgraded some hardware in my mom's computer, and since then, whenever Windows is started up she gets this message: same way it's described in the steps you gave... steps 2 through 6. Quote from: t_blake07 on February 28, 2010, 08:23:08 AM The problem is that i'm having trouble finding the ProgramData folder and anything that follows. If anyone knows how I can get to this folder through another route, fill me in please. Thanks.Quote 2) Go to tools\Folder OptionsTools->Folder Options: Press Alt if your menubar is not visible. Quote 3) Select the View Tab Quote 4) select Show Hidden Files and Folders I revised step 6 here on account of pressing Apply and OK being redundant. Also you can just type the FULL path into the breadcrumb/address bar. You won't be able to see anything until you show the hidden files though.I ran a search for the ProgramData folder and nothing came up. That's the first obstacle I guess; finding that folder. Edit* I had to enable my menu bar first. Now I can see the ProgramData folder after showing hidden folders. Thanks BC.Quote from: t_blake07 on March 02, 2010, 07:26:49 PM I ran a search for the ProgramData folder and nothing came up. That's the first obstacle I guess; finding that folder. The menus are still present. you need to show hidden files and folders first. Here, I'll make it simple- change the options in folder options, close EXPLORER, and then run this command: explorer C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\DRM Ok, now that I have access to these files, I was wondering if anyone knows what they are, and whether or not it's safe to delete them. There's a reason this DRM folder is protected, and I can't mess up this PC seeing that it isn't my personal PC. These are the files: Cache (folder) blackbox.bin drmstore.hds Indivbox.key v2ksndv.bla v3ks.bla v3ks.sec Cache folder contains: Indiv01.bla Indiv01.key Indiv01.tmp |

Solve : Windows 7 home premium 64-bit or 32-bit?? |
Answer» hi this is my first post, I hope what seems to be a fairly simple question will have an equally simple answer Ok, so there is enough 64 bit drivers out there for hardware that needs it and enough 32 bit programs working without problems on a 64 bit windows?OH? I was under the impression... that Windows 8 ... would be 8 bit computing!Quote from: patio on December 03, 2009, 05:30:02 PM I've had zero buggy issues with Win7 64bit and i've been running it from the BETA thru the RC and finally the final version...You're gone all day and now that you're back this is the best you could do? just to clarify that the notebook already had windows 7 home premium 64-Bit pre-installed when I bought it Would a possible work around be to set up a dual-boot system with both the 64-Bit & the 32-Bit versions of the OS? I think the general response is along the lines of "if its not BROKE, dont fix it" so I will leave the status quo as is for now and deal with any problems if and when they arrive thanks for your help and advice Merry Christmas to each and EVERY one!If you really want to try the 32 bit ver. it can be installed. You will need to do a clean install however so backup your data... You can run 1 or the other...but not both under the Liscense agreement.I'm dual-booting Vista 64-bit with Win 7 64-bit on my wife's new Dell Inspiron 1545 - though she's noted to me probably 4 times in the past week about some odd video occurrances (blacked-out screen portions, mis-appropriated background designs, that kind-of thing). The Win 7 disc I used was sent-out by Dell "to be used as Upgrade only," though I had been told these upgrade discs will allow for a fresh install (which is why I opted for the fresh install). I'm thinking that it may be possible that having the two OS's on the same HDD is responsible for the graphics problems, and another DVD drive issue that I've personally noticed. Any ideas on this would be much appreciated. I do plan on re-formatting the Vista partition once I'm satisfied that Win 7 is actually as stable and as great as it's stated to be . . . I will then use G-parted to re-group those partions back into the one that they used to be, just fyi. Check for the latest release of the 64 bit driver for your specific video card for the 7 install.I got rid of the Vista partition in early January - though G-Parted wouldn't do anything for me b/c the Vista partition was set as the Boot drive, even though the default boot drive was Windows 7 according to how it actually booted w/o personal selection input. The built-in Windows Partitioning tool wouldn't touch the Vista partition either - for the same reason I'm assuming. What finally got the job done was to use the Windows 7 install disc to reformat all but the OEM partition into one again, then do a fresh install . . . This gave me/us more than just the extra elbowroom, but a seemingly smoother running OS - imagine that, right? Thanks for the advice guys! |

Sometimes I have to repeat this OPERATION 3 or 4 times to get them to disappear. Please help. Try a different monitor. If the dots do not appear, you'll need to replace or REPAIR the monitor. |

Solve : question about the way a window can open? |
Answer» this question isn't really a problem but more of a annoyance. i use windows gadgets and i like to see them (I.E. network monitor and CPU monitor and some others) but every time i open a window it COVERS the gadgets up...... yes i know that they can be set to stay on top of all windows. i guess my question is.... is it possible to modify how far the maximize goes on the maximization. could the maximize stop like it did in vista. What do you mean "could the maximize stop like it did in Vista"? Maximize is maximize. You can change the size and position a window will open by dragging it to the size and location you want and closing it. It should then open in the same spot. If it doesn't, try holding down either the CTRL or SHIFT key when closing the window.what i meant by the vista maximization is.... is it possible to PARTITION off the right side of the computer desktop where the win 7 gadgets are located? In win vista if you selected the option to keep the gadgets on top of all other windows it WOULD basically make the left side of the gadgets the end of your screen. I'm wondering if the same is possible in windows 7. |

Solve : Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot Media in selected? |
Answer» Two months ago I had trouble booting into Windows XP. After much troubleshooting I decided it was time to SIMPLY START from scratch and reinstall the OS. I purchased Windows 7 and installed it (along with a new motherboard to expand my options with peripherals). Long story short, it worked fine for two months. This two days ago I got the "Select proper BOOT device..." message. I have three hard drives in my COMPUTER (all SATA). The primary drive is for software only... no personal files. The second drive is my primary storage drive. The third drive is a mirrored backup of the storage drive. When I unplug the storage drives Windows boots right up without altering any BIOS settings. The problem is persistent. Each time I reboot it's the same thing. If all three drives are plugged in, it won't boot to Windows. If I unplug the other two drives, it boots just fine but I'm minus my data. |

Solve : Help!!! My Vista pc seems doomed!!!? |
Answer» The 1st thing to happen to it was the dreaded blue screen that says: 'unmountable boot volume' along with a few things to try such as booting with the VISTA disk, etc. So then I did try the disk to no avail! And so then I went into the bios at boot & messed around in there a BIT, but I don't think I really changed anything tho. Now I have a black screen (no cursor even!) and I cannot boot from ANYWHERE or get into the bios - NOTHING! Can someone please tell me I havent lost all my FAMILY photographs & videos??? Please modify your post so we can at least read it. Preferably black font. Then maybe we can assist you better. Thanks.Ahh, much better. Thank you. I know, I realize that but I thought I could try the suggestions the blue screen was suggesting. But thank you for the battery reset idea - i'm gonna try that. Odds are, resetting the CMOS/BIOS will get you to a point that you can then fix the "Unmountable Boot Volume" issue. LET us know when you've completed the battery step.okay, I reset it after taking out the battery & I still get the same thing as before. It makes 3 LONG beeps and the moniter tries to come on but just flashes then shuts completly off but the pc stays running. Any ideas? This is the first time you mentioned the beeps. Go to the website of your bios provider and see what 3 beeps means.ok I went to the Intel website to where they told me these things to try; 1.) download a bios recovery cd & boot with it. that didnt work. 2.) take out the bios config jumper pin & boot with that same cd that didnt work. All hope of recovering family pics on that hard drive should be gone right? Is there anything else to try? If you have tried everything and you still can't recover windows then there is still hope for your files. As long as its just the operating system and not your hard drive that is physically damaged then you should be able to put that hard drive in another computer and copy your files over with no problems. When considering recovery of data the HDD has nothing to do with the system being able to boot or not... Slave Drive Info... The drive does NOT need to be bootable for you to retrieve your data... |

Solve : win 7 problems? |
Answer» I'm not very computer literate but I have a Dell Inspirion ONE running win 7...brand new with a lot of problems. One is that at the top of some of the web pages I'm on, particularly my google mail...at the end of the address box where the refresh and X buttons are there is a picture of a 'broken page' and when I right click on it it says "compatibility view: websites designed for older BROWSERS will often look better and problems such as out of place menus, images or text will be corrected". Does that mean there is a problem with the web site and can I get RID of it? The next problem is that I had an epson printer that was compatible with win 7 but would not install no matter what I did. I was on the phone with epson and dell for a week and it ended up with Dell saying it's a software issue with the pc. This is a brand new pc out of the box how can there be software issues so fast? ...thanks for any help I can get.Microsoft in making a major revamp of IE has offered Compatibility View for those web SITES that are not working right in the new IE. |
