Solve : Windows7 Activate issue after replacing motherboard and CPU?

Answer»

I'm having activate windows now problem.
I had to rebuild my computer due to bad motherboard and CPU issue. So I had to replace my motherboard and CPU. I kept the same hard drive, so I didn't have to re-load Windows.

Now i get a message Activate windows now. When I try to use my product key, it associates the key to my old motherboard I assume, so it will not ACCEPT my product key.

What do i need to do to get my product key to work? You need to reformat. That is something that you have to always do when replacing your motherboard. Theres just no WAY around it.Quote from: rnnr4202001 on April 02, 2010, 03:15:02 PM

Solve : MS Security Essentials and other progs. Can they work together ????

Answer»

I run Vista,Spyware Blaster and Avast. Now MS has security "essentials" out and I would like to know if I can run them all or must I close one? (Maybe 2?).
What are the best programs to keep and what must I throw away ?

All the best;ERIC.

[recovering disk space - old ATTACHMENT deleted by admin]You should not have more than one Anti VIRUS utility resident / active at any given time. Other than that you're fine (I'm also a big fan of SpywareBlaster). So if I`m right I must shut down MS Security Essentials, keep Avast as my Anti-Virus program and keep Spy-ware blaster(Because it`s a spyware program and no a.v. program).I downloaded blaster because of your advice(A while ago!)and I love it !..Thanks..AGAIN....

Greetings;Eric.

MS again...Hard to remove,I`ll have to force remove it !!!You can have as MANY NON - RESIDENT apps as you like. For example, Spyware Blaster does not run resident, so it doesn't matter what else you have. And I've not used MS Essentials but if there is a way to keep the AV portion from running resident you can certainly keep it on your system and run Avast as your resident AV (or vice versa). I just have a computer for a bit of mail and so.(AND when I do SOMETHING stupid and have to ask you for help ! )For 99% of the time I run my studio on it,so I don`t have a clue about;"resident" and so.I very much appreciate the help but I have my hands full with Pro-Tools and so,even after a few years of working with a "soft-studio" I only know a few % of it all.I`ll learn from my mistakes and the stuff I`m tought on this forum but I would like (for now) to keep it as simple as possible. That is why I`m happy with your direct answers. It`s not that I don`t appreciate the help but I`ve made(until about 6 years ago)some "mistakes" in my life and my mind can get chaotic.

Thanks again;Eric.

PS;Might you know if I must set my open-GL to tripple buffering

Solve : Formating the rest of CD for use in all players.?

Answer»

I formatted part of a CD using Windows and mistakenly selected the "only will be read by this computer OPTION." Now, when I put the disk in and left click the mouse over the folder there is a format option but I don't KNOW what to select so that what I put on there now will be readable in my car(because what is on the disk now is not). How exactly do you format PART of CD?
Is it CDR, or CDRW?I believe he means "finalize"Quote

How exactly do you format PART of CD?

I guess that answered my question.

I'm prompted when I use a blank/new CD whether I want it to play on all computers and CD players, or if I want to use it to STORE INFO for just my computer. Which can only be read by my computer. I know one of these is called mastered but I don't know which one. Well, I accidentally choose the option to format for only my computer. Where it will not play in my car. From what I can figure there's lots of free space on the disk and my question was how to use the rest of the space the way I want to. Which is formated to play in my car.

You know what's funny is I'm a Petty Officer 2nd class. If that is analogous to computer knowlegde, then in the NAVY I wouldn't be able to find the boat. You didn't answer my other question, but if it's CD-R, once formatted and written to, you're done. It can't be undone. CD-R can be written to once.
You need new, blank CD.Yea-it's CD-R.As I said, you need new, blank CD.

Solve : speech recognition?

Answer»

I am going to talk about windows speech recognition.
In windows XP you could have speech recognition if you installed another program such as the ONE found in Microsoft office. Users who bought Windows Vista found that the speech recognition program incorporated into the operating system.
With the release of Windows seven speech recognition now is widely available in a stable and improved operating system . Here is my personal experience with the speech recognition software in Windows seven. I am using it now to make this post. Oops. %&^& Once in awhile I need to cough works are my throat and I have to remember what the command is to mute the microphone. When I said windows XP I use dragon naturally speaking. In fact, it even looks like this to program I'm using now is a copy of the dragon system. Some of the commands are little different, but otherwise it's just as easy to use as the dragon. I have yet to figure out how to get it to capitalize things. In the dragon you could just say capitalized something and it would do it. Anyway, that's not to import. You can figure out what I mean anyway even if I don't capitalize something.
So, I would like to know if other users are now going to voice recognition with windows seven. I never tried it in visa. So if things went wrong and the stuff that I never got that far. But, maybe that's a harsh judgment. Anyway, windows seven sure looks a lot more stable from my point of view.
Thanks for listing. I mean a reading.
http://www.microsoft.com/enable/products/windowsvista/speech.aspx

Windows XP had very limited speech recognition built in; but it was a huge PITA to set up. I remember because I messed around with it once... I just never got past the TRAINING wizard, because I *censored* near needed to recite a entire short story.

I actually set up Speech Recognition in Vista x64 for my parents.

My mother, in particular, is not much of a typist, and she always wanted to write a book.

So I set up Vista on the PC I built for my folks for that very reason.

I apologized to my mother when it didn't dictate certain words properly, but she insisted that it was just getting used to her.

So...I'm assuming that she still uses it to this very day. psh its nothing compared against win 7's. The good thing is that you dont even really have to train the thingThat statement is almost too innaccurate to even comment on...so i will.Quote from: Gin on December 15, 2009, 01:51:18 PM

psh its nothing compared against win 7's. The good thing is that you dont even really have to train the thing

pet peeve: when people say "its nothing compared to x" why? it doesn't make any sense.

you can't compare anything to nothing, because- it's nothing. anything compared to nothing is basically everything that the nothing is not and cannot be until it becomes something more then nothing which is also difficult since nothing can come from nothing except more nothing.

This is quite well illustrated with VB and "Null" and "Nothing"

Code: [Select]Dim X,Y,Z,A
Y=14,Z=12
X=Null
if X=Null then print "X is null" 'prints nothing.
A=Y+Z
Print A=Null 'prints Null again
Print A 'prints 26
A = Y*Z*X
Print IsNull(A) 'prints true
Print A*2 'prints Null

"Null" is semantically similar to the REAL-world definition of "nothing"; Null Propagates through expressions, much like nothing through english sentences- Any expression containing Null is itself Null and therefore false.

Additionally, comparing a existing something to nothing has grander mathematical implications; in this case, saying that the speech recognition is nothing compared to windows 7's is saying that windows 7's version is in fact infinitely better, (forgetting of course that comparing anything to nothing is itself a fruitless endeavor marked with 30-day RETURN policies and lost credit receipts that you could swear the waittress took), which is not exactly POSSIBLE, even as hyperbole.

I hope you have all learned not to compare something to nothing, since it's a weighted argument at the very least; additionally, to proclaim that something "is nothing" is nothing more then baseless metaphor and should be treated as such, not as a appropriate metric to determine worth.Quote

Worthy of the Archives...i say.
I forgot to turn the microphone on and I gave a nice little spiel, but it lacks nothing about this line. So the above line represents a null statement in speech recognition.sorry, I know the rules.

Any how I ment compared against xp an you were limited with what you really could do. In 7 you can just start dictating right off an it will give the expected results for the most part.Thread necromancy (replying to a topic that hasn't been replied to in a long period of time...usually three weeks or more) is typically frowned upon here.

The only exception is if the necromancy adds more information or a solution to the problem for the reference of others (i.e.: if someone is Googling for a solution to their problem and happens to run into the topic in question). Hello again, yes, no point in recycling something that's old. But for the benefit of others I will add some new content to this thread.
Here is a YouTube video done by a young man who has a good voice and appears to be a quick study and does real good with multi monitor setup. It's an experience just to watch him and see how he takes control of Windows 7 speech recognition. All I can add is that it is true, the window seven speech recognition is the easiest speech recognition program.

Solve : Connecting to a computer from an outside location?

Answer»

Hello,

I am not very familiar with computers but I will try to be as thorough as possible. I work out of an office in which all of our computers use Windows Vista. They are all HP as well (not sure if that is IMPORTANT).

We have a network set-up and a host computer that holds all of our important files. All of our computers access this computer's public folders to view these files.

I am moving into another office in a different city. I am trying to find out if there is any way to connect to the main offices network so I can access the files on my boss's public folders. I don't believe that a remote desktop connection will work as she uses the computer. I don't know where to begin.

Any information at all will help, even if it's a referral to someone that could set it up for us. We do not have an IT department - I am the closest thing to it and have no knowledge of computers.

Thank you in advance. I've never done this but I think it may be a solution for you: Setting up your VPN under Windows Vista. I'd say setting this up is not for the faint of heart. You may want to get outside assistance with this. Here's a link to MS on VPN for Vista. All seem to be for third party though. The "make it work" answer:

1) Purchase a router with VPN capabilities. Examples are the Linksys BEFVP41 (old) or the Linksys RV042.
2) Set up the VPN router in the office.
3) Create a tunnel on the router.
4) Download this and use it on your computer at your remote location:

http://forums.linksysbycisco.com/t5/Wired-Routers/Where-do-I-get-the-quick-VPN-client/m-p/254495

5) Connect using the VPN client software. From there, you should be able to map network drives and/or use a UNC path (looks like this: \\servername\sharename) to get to your files.

The "do it right," not-so simple answer (which requires spending time and money, and may even REQUIRE gaining a greater degree of additional computer/networking knowledge and/or an IT consultant to get involved (most likely the latter), but is beneficial in the long run):

1) Purchase a server.
2) Purchase and install Small Business Server (SBS) 2008 Standard on it. Read up on Microsoft documentation, as it's a fairly picky little bird.
3) Copy all of the files you want to share to the SBS instead of the workstation you're using. While you're at it, purchase a removable drive bay for that server and some SATA hard drives to back up your stuff so you don't lose all of it for whatever reason (i.e.: the public computer dies, the building burns down, somebody accidentally deletes something)
4) Join all your computers to the new SBS 2008 domain.
5) Configure Routing and Remote Access on it (Start -> Administrative Tools -> Routing and Remote Access). Right-click the server name, left click "Configure and enable Routing and Remote Access." Select "Custom," then "VPN," then your choice of static pool or DHCP (use DHCP for now) -> Finish.
6) Open up Port 1723 and Protocol 47 on your router (for PPTP VPNs...can't remember the ports for L2TP/IPSec). Point them to the internal IP address of the SBS 2008 server.
7) Grant your user account access rights to VPN (in Active Directory, under the Dial-In tab, select "Allow Access" and add yourself to the "Windows SBS Virtual Private Network Users" group.
From your satellite location, create a VPN connection. In Vista and 7, it's under "Network and Sharing Center" -> Set up a new connection or network -> Connect to a workplace -> use my Internet connection -> the external public IP address of your company (or external domain name i.e.: mail.something.com) -> your user name, password, and domain -> don't connect yet. Go into the PROPERTIES of the VPN connection -> Advanced tab -> Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IP v4) -> Properties button -> Advanced tab -> uncheck "Use default gateway on local network" -> DNS tab -> add the INTERNAL IP address of your SBS server -> WINS tab -> add the Internal IP address of your SBS server. Now try connecting.

Granted, an SBS sounds like overkill, but you get additional stuff with it:

1) Your own mail server. Added bonus if you have iPhones and/or Windows Mobile phones, as people can sync their Outlook e-mail, Calendar, Contacts, etc over the air from their phones to the mail server. Blackberries are a little more of a pain, though...
2) Your own Intranet (Sharepoint) site, in case internal communication is an issue. Just post stuff on the Sharepoint site and have everyone's Internet Explorer (or Firefox or whatever browser) have the Sharepoint site as the home page. Even better...post your documents on the Sharepoint site and grant outside access to the site. As long as it's secure, it then becomes a very easy way for you to get access to your documents from ANYWHERE with an Internet connection! At that point, you could pretty much skip #5-8 above!
3) CONTROL over user accounts and passwords on the network.
4) A way to back up everything centrally (including users' Desktops, Favorites, and Documents folders if you configure Roaming Profiles and folder redirection properly)...use SATA drive, schedule Windows Server Backup to backup everything at night, switch to another drive whenever you feel the need (at least once a week would be good...every day if the information is super-critical).
5) A way to lock people out of doing certain things (i.e.: changing their wallpaper to stupid stuff).
6) Centralized print queues. As an added bonus, either use Group Policy or a logon script to map printers whenever a new printer is installed or a new computer/user is added. No more manually installing them on every computer!

Solve : I cannot choose the language of the applications in Windows 7?

Answer»

Hi. I'm getting crazy with my new ThinkPad X301. I have just installed Windows 7. I chose English US for both the keyboard and OS language. I have selected Italy as location (I am Italian but I'm living in the Netherlands and did not want IE SUGGESTING me all Dutch sites first).
Now whenever I install applications (like SPSS), the system choose Italian as application language I followed the procedure described in "Change your display language". In "Region and Language" I CHANGED the location to UK. In "Keyboard and Languages" I removed the Italian Keyboard which for some reasons was shown below the US one However as soon as I click on the SPSS Setup, Windows takes for granted that I want to use Italian as installation language! Actually I have to have English applications.
Does somebody know whether it is possible to INFORM Windows 7 that would be polite provide the customers with the possibility to choose the language by themselves? How to do it (without installing the OS again)?
Thanks a lot.

I had AVG on another computer that had ISSUES. I have now switched to this PRODUCT and never looked back.
It was also recommended by one of our MALWARE specialists (1 in a few) so it stands up.

Make sure you have only one AV running at a time. As in uninstal AVG

Solve : Amilo L series laptop 1310(g) + windows 7 = fail drivers??

Answer»

I have amilo L series 1310 (or is it 1310g, not sure what's the difference) laptop. Default specs. It came with win xp, because it's designed for it, ALSO came the drivers & utilities cd with drivers for XP.

But now I want windows 7 on it. So I installed Windos 7 Ultimate 32-bit on it. Everything works fine (no lag, I'm impressed), BUT
it can't find the drivers. The cd that came with the laptop just fails to autoplay (something about activex). Even if I manage to open it manually it doesn't work. Tried installing those drivers while searching in cd's folders. Still doesn't work, tons of errors etc.

When it comes to display drivers, I only manage to install/update drivers (on xp) with ati mod tool. Otherwise it gives me an error (something like 'setup did not find a driver compatible with your os. setup will now exit'). Same happened in 7. And by the way, ATI radeon xpress 200M only has drivers for xp, none for windows 7.

Again, if someone shared his story or just could explain to me how to fully configure windows 7 ultimate on this laptop model, I would be very grateful.

I believe it might be model specific.

Thank you for any help.

PC specs:

Brand/model: fujitsu siemens amilo L series 1310(g) laptop (not sure if it's 1310 or 1310g, btw what's the difference?)
512mb ram (64mb shared for ATI radeon xpress 200M video card)
intel celeron m 1.6 ghz processorThose specs are barely enough for Win7...

However your real issues...especially if it's a laptop is you need to find Win7 drivers for that machine...
Otherwise you will continue to have problems.
These should come directly from the laptop manuf. SITE...if they haven't written them it's because it's an older machine and they probably don't intend to...According to Here... you don't have much of a chance.
Win2K would however run fine on that machine...even XP may have been a reach. My laptop was designed for XP and was shipped with it. Works perfectly. When I installed Win 7 (WITHOUT aero), everything was working fine, I experienced no lag - it was the same as in XP.

Only that I can't find the compatible drivers. I'm sure it's POSSIBLE for this model, because I've seen people who did it, but the didn't tell how. Also, I found some kind of a tutorial somewhere (I wish I remembered where), but it was kinda OLD and on one answered (not in this forum).Quote

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

*

1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
*

1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
*

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
*

DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

Additional requirements to use certain features:

*

Internet access (fees may apply)
*

DEPENDING on resolution, video playback may require additional memory and advanced graphics hardware
*

For some Windows Media Center functionality a TV tuner and additional hardware may be required

Solve : Problem with Away Mode System [Win7 Pro 64-bit]?

Answer»

I have been receiving the message:

"Address a problem with Away Mode System
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between your computer's Away Mode System and your 64-bit version of Windows. The Away Mode System is only compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows.

This problem is not CRITICAL, but you can prevent it from occurring again by disabling the Away Mode System in your computer's BIOS. Refer to the instructions that came with your computer that explain how to access the BIOS and turn off Away Mode System support.

Note
Changing BIOS settings requires moderate to advanced computer skills. If you are not experienced at changing BIOS settings, consider asking someone with more advanced skills to help you
."

Now this has been in the message center since I purchased the PC, but since it stated that it wasn't critical I thought nothing of it.

Now it's beginning to cause problems. If I leave the PC alone long enough it will go into a standby like state, but won't wake up from it when I shake the mouse. To get it to return to normal I have to turn off the computer, UNPLUG it from the wall, replug it in, and then turn it back on. When it starts back up it simply acts as if it were in sleep mode and returns to the desktop normally.

I am not familiar with Win7. In fact I just got it, so I'm not sure how to go about resolving this. I went into the POWER saving options and turned off sleep mode, but that message still remains.

The error STATES that I need to modify BIOS SOMEHOW. I'm hoping there's a more convenient way than that, but if there isn't I would appreciate some instructions.

Solve : Win7 PC Optimization??

Answer»

Good day and thank you for reading. I was just wondering how I can make my Windows 7 laptop PC APPLICATIONS (startup times) and games (Flight Simulator X, etc.) run faster and more smoothly. Are there applications that I can download and run?

I don't want to overclock anything (too WIMPY to TAKE the risk), and my laptop specs are:
AMD Athlon TF-20 ~1.6 Ghz
2.0GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD 3200

Thank you for reading and possibly responding.Your laptop is, by today's standards, a little below average in terms of specs. You can add ANOTHER gig of ram and/or use a usb drive for readyboost, but other than that no, there are certainly no apps that will help. And, I wouldn't be SURPRISED if he's maxed out on RAM.I'm not sure how much RAM the computer can hold, but it came with 2GBs installed.

I'll look into buying more. Thank you very much. You're most welcome.

Solve : AC_RunActiveContent.js error tele2?

Answer»

I am using a newly bought Compaq 615 laptop, with Windows 7 and IE 8.0 pre-installed by the supplier.
Everytime when I visit the site se.tele2.nl , I get a error message POP-up with the text: This page requires AC_RunActiveContent.js.
That site is the login site for my former private e-mail address via webmail. You can also go there via www.zonnet.nl.
I can still type in those boxes but logging in is no longer possible.
I tried the same on a COMPUTER of a colleague, with XP and IE 7, but there I had the same problem.
I downloaded and installed Firefox, but it did not solve it.
I downloaded Adobe flashplayer but it did not solve it either.
I called the tele2 help desk twice, but they say it is on my site, but the 2 people did not sound like computer technicians.
I have the idea that they should have installed this file on their website, but how can I try something from my site?
I did not know if my internet provider could be guilty, so I tried via the Vodafone mobile internet (I moved to Tanzania) but I still had the same problem.
For my internet settings, I cannot find " Active X controls" in IE8, but I placed this website in the trusted sites and via options>tools I set every setting as unsafe as possible for the trusted sites. (It is my only trusted site.)
Since I have not mch experience with Firefox, I did not try all those settings yet.
I installed a SP via Windows Update. I thought it was for IE8, but my help-about still shows 8.0, so maybe it was a Windows Service pack. I do not know where to check that.
I cannot e-mail the helpdesk of tele2, because I cannot access their website, so in case (I hope not) that that would be the only solution, could you e-mail them for me and let me know?
My computer comes with preinstalled McAfee Total protection Service, that I could ACTIVATE for a free 60 days trial, but I have not done that yet.
Thanks in advanceQuote

I downloaded and installed Firefox, but it did not solve it.
I downloaded Adobe FLASH player but it did not solve it either.
I called the tele2 help desk twice, but they say it is on my site, but the 2 people did not sound like computer technicians.

Using Windows 7 amd IE 8 I can go into the site and only a flash player plug in is missing.
Using my XP with Firefox th2 ere is no problem.

Web mail requires a specific port to pass the firewall.

So you have something in your area that blocks part of this site. In what region are you located?

Maybe your local ISP has this site on a black list.
Hoi Geek
Thanks for your counter questions.
I have asked your questions to the internet provider, but no answers yet.

I have found out something else, that might be useful:
I am using Windows 7 STARTER.
That also means that my administrator rights have been reduced.
They say that I am an admin but I am not.

I have made the invisible admin account visible, as advised in option 2 of
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/507-built-administrator-account-enable-disable.html
with an elevated command prompt.
After that, when I logged in as administrator, I could find
the ActiveX settings in my Internet Explorer Options,
but unfortunately, I am receiving the same error still.

I am in the city Arusha, in Tanzania.

Can the Starter version be causing more problems than the normal Windows 7?
Try Firefox and see what happens. Also, see this:
http://www.actionscript.org/forums/showthread.php3?t=142348Personally i would never use an e-mail account that requires Active X...Hoi Allen,
As I wrote, I tried firefox and I have the same problem.

Hoi Patio
It was caused historically, first I used this e-mail address
and the mail was downloaded to my C-drive every time
when I checked my mail (there is probably a word for these
kind of mail systems)
and now that I have moved to a different country, I have
switched to gmail, but I do like to check my old mail address
because some mail there is still useful.

But was is the disadvantage of a web mail that needs Active X?

Hoi everybody
It could still be related to this admin rights.
I will post a different thread in a few minutes, but after I have
saved changes in my Word 7 normal.dot, those changes
have "disappeared" if I open Word again.
Windows 7 STARTER seems a too restricted thing to me.Hello,

I'm wondering if you did find a solution, because I have the same problem!

I have XP, and tried with IE, Firefox and Opera and also moved to another country.

Hope to hear a solution from you! Hello NetNiet
Are you also Dutch and is it also about this same zonnet website?
Calling zonnet costs enormously much money and the non-technicians deny the problem.
I found a workaround, that works for private e-mail, but not for Paypal and zonnet itself.
My gmail allows me to "pretend that gmail is a computer" with the POP technology, so gmail downloads most of my zonnet mail to my gmail, and from Tanzania I can read my gmail without any problem.Hey Fedde, yes I'm Dutch ASWELL and it's the same website!

I hope it's fine if I go over in Dutch, because computer problems are terrible for me and to sort it out in English it's even worse

I did look in GMail and think I found the same solution as you have, because there are lots of emails, it will take some time I guess, but thanks!!!

But it stays a problem to reach the website the normal way.

Thanks again, you made me very happy! It looks like the tele2 (formerly zonnet) protects
IP addresses from Tanzania and Tunesia to
access the web-site?
I am in Tanzania now and the Dutch person NetNiet
who moved to Tunesia has precisely the same problem.

Solve : Can't Access Partitions From Other Computers (Win7)?

Answer»

Hello guys, I have a question about Windows 7's network.
I really can't stand this OPERATION system, but my sister just bought a new laptop with Windows 7 Starter so I'll avoid FORMATTING because it'd just cause problems.

So, my sister wanted me to allow her stationary COMPUTER to edit and read files in the new Laptop (the stationary computer has Windows 7 Ultimate installed). I MADE sure both computers are connected to our workgroup, although I avoid using these new "homegroups" (most of our computers are using Windows XP).
Then I went to Partition D's properties (in the laptop), ALLOWED sharing and editted the permission of "Everyone" to allow reading and editting.
I also made sure all the options in the Network and Sharing center allow all the file sharing modifications needed.

Apparently the laptop can access both the stationary computer of my sister and mine (which has XP on it). I remember I was the one who fixed all the sharing issues with her stationary computer but I completely forgot what have I done. If you need Screenshots the Laptop's configs I can give you those, and if not, can anyone please tell me what to do so other computers in the workgroup can read, and then edit filed on my sister's laptops?

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: By the way, there are 3 objects appearing when I view the Laptop through the network: "Users" folder, Partition C and Partition D. I can access Users folder. Can't do so to the others...that's the whole problem XD

Solve : Tried everything but still just a black screen?

Answer»

I have read several of the posts and have tried many options but I still can't get vista to boot up. An elderly friend of mine has a ML 6714 Gateway laptop that she bought from Best BUY and couple of years ago. It came with NO software disks and the recovery is in a separate partition on her hard drive. I don't think she has much computer knowledge and I don't know what happened but her laptop will not boot up. She has asked me if I could help. All there is is a black screen with a cursor in the left HAND corner. When you turn it on all it will let you do is an F2 for BIOS and an F10 for how it will boot. I have tried the following:
1. VISTA disks (that I did have with my laptop). It will let me go into the repair part but it does not see any operating system so it has nothing to repair.
2. At the DOS prompt it appears that the d: drive with the recovery software is OK but I don't know how to get it started.
3. I did a chkdsk of the c: drive where VISTA supposedly is but it cam back as saying there was a problem with the master file table.
4. I have tried alt f8 but all it does it get me back to the black screen and loud noises everytime I press a button.
5. I had downloaded just the VISTA recovery part from a website but again, it is not recognizing any operating system.

PLEASE, can anyone help me? At first I was hoping to save her data but at this point I just want her laptop to work. Sounds like a hard drive failure, if the computer beeps a sequence at you or led flashing, check the BIOS POST Error Code. These beeps are indicators of the problems. You will normally find them in the motherboard manual with the computer, however since you don't have that you should also be able to find them online from another computer.

You should enter recovery console and try use the command to repair the master file table: chkdsk /f
or use chkdsk /R, which will take longer, but locates bad sectors and recovers readable information.

If that is however failing you could try more advance software like TestDisk to recover: http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

IrishgurlI'm guessing if there is no problem when you use the keyboard then the problem should have to do with the mouse. Try a different mouse, MAYBE, to see if you can replicate the problem.Did this just start or has it always been this way? Is this a new installation?New batteries...

After installing Windows 7, I used DriveMax Agent to update as many drivers as I could. The one thing I didn't do was create a system restore point so I could backtrack in case something didn't work.

After one of the USB driver updates, all of my USB ports stopped working. I can still charge my phone, but I get no connectivity to my phone (ITunes, IPhone won't talk to each other / printer doesn't work / etc). Since I didn't create a system restore point to go back to an older driver, I THOUGHT MAYBE I could install an older driver, or maybe a universal driver.

I've tried all of the suggestions found online (uninstall all USB Host Controllers, REBOOT / etc) but nothing works and device manager says they're working correctly.

One strange thing that does happen is if I open DriveMax agent and reinstall the same USB driver that is currently installed, ITunes / IPhone will sync, but if I either close ITunes or reboot, it doesn't work.

Is there a way to go back to an older version for the USB drivers and get things working again?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

JoeYou should travel to Dell and enter your Service Tag #...
All your drivers will be listed there...
I'd suggest DLoading and installing the MBoard chipset Drivers 1st...Thanks for the info...how do I install a driver that is older than the current one? It tells me I have the most current and wont install.Go to device manager and right click on the usb controller. Choose Properties and in the properties window click on the driver tab. Now choose Roll Back Driver. You will be asked if you are sure. Click yes. The computer should automatically restart. If it doesn't, manually restart it.

Also, you should stay away from driver update programs. Most of them are junk. Never update a driver unless you need to. Solid advice JJ...i agree. Thanks JJ.

I did try the rollback option previously but my rollback button is grayed out which, according to searches, means there's no previous version to roll back to. Since I downloaded what I HOPE is a previous version (Dell website, Intel chipset), what folder does it need to be placed in so the driver dialogue box can 'see' it?

And thanks for the info on using driver update software. I thought it was a good thing!

JoeThe driver that you downloaded from dell should be self extracting. You just save it somewhere on your computer and click on it and then choose Run when you are prompted. I downloaded a zip version a month ago (R140595), started the setup.exe file, ran through the install, rebooted, and I still had the same problem. The most recent file I downloaded was an .exe file (same chipset utility though) which I installed, rebooted, and the same thing; no USB functionality (aside from being able to power my iPhone) and the rollback button is grayed out with the newer driver listed.Have you uninstalled that driver update program yet? That's the first thing I'd do.

Also, this may be a long shot and I doubt it will work but check bios to make sure that your usb ports are enabled.I did uninstall the driver update program and checked the bios for USB enable...all are enabled.

For whatever REASON, I was finally able to load previous drivers (from Vista) for the USB Host Controllers:

Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27CB
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27C8
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27C9
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Universal Host Controller 27CA
Intel(R)82801G (ICH7 Family) USB Enhanced Host Controller 27CC

And now, 'Rollback' is active. But My USB ports still don't work.

Any thoughts as to next steps?

Joe

Solve : System Prep. 3.14 Issue??

Answer»

Last year I SENT my LAPTOP to Dell after the hard drive failed. It's an Inspiron 1420 with Windows Vista Home Premium. I received it, and upon turning it on I was logged into the "Administrator" account and given the System Prep. Tool prompt:

Not really knowing what I was doing, I simply logged out of the account and created my own. Since then I have continued to log out of this account and into my own account every time I reboot.

From that point on, whenever I restart/shut down the computer, it logs into this "Administrator" account upon start-up. How can I get rid of this account, or hide it, and MAKE it so that my laptop will log into my own account upon start-up.

I'm afraid to use the system prep tool, because I think it might not work, or cause all my data to be wiped? But I'm honestly a complete N00B...

Solve : Cookies not saving on any browser?

Answer»

I have done intense research and still not have found a solution. Heres the deal:

My macaffee license expired. Since I have TWC, I downloaded their free antivirus(Which is terrible). This made my computer so sluggish I had to system RESTORE because I couldn't uninstall because I was having .0001 fps.(Exagerated). I then worked my way to AVG and downloaded that. I still have that and it works fine. I noticed that none of my cookies were being saved in any browser(Chrome, IE, Firefox). Any suggestions? I have tried for month to fix it and have not come up with a solution.

Specs:
Vista Home Premium SP2
Dell XPS 420
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.33 GHZ
32 Bit
4 GB of Ram
What other protection apps do you have ??

AVG from what i know does not randomly block/delete cookies...

Note: Good move getting rid of TWC's package THOUGH...are you sure it's gone ? ?Nothing besides the basic firewall pre-installed. I just did a system restore to a date before I installed the TWC package then installed AVG. Could it be issues in the registry? I tried the Macaffee uninstall tool just to make sure I got COMPLETELY rid of macaffee.

To no avail.

Solve : Trouble with "IE 8"?

Answer»

I have a Dell Studio Desktop computer with "Windows Vista Home Edition". It is a 32 Bit with "Internet Explorer 8".
I use the computer and my wife uses it. When we switch "User" from mine to hers, "IE 8" does not work.

When she clicks on IE , up comes a white screen with a window that says "Please wait while windows CONFIGURES SETTINGS 1.2.1". Then in a second another window comes up covering that window saying "Search settings will now close all instances of Internet Explorer before continuing".
Then it gives you a choice of continue or cancel. Cancel does nothing when you click on it. If she clicks Continue, the screen goes white.
We notice there is nothing above the TOOLBAR such as Google or MSN etc. Google is her "Default" setting as is mine. It is also her Default Setting in "Internet options". In getting back to the Toolbar, if we click on the Drop Down Arrow, there we see Google. we click on that and Google opens.
I'm about to pull my hair out. I've run CCleaner as well as try to do a "System Restore". It would not "Restore".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ptfitzy1) Forget ccleaner. It does not solve any problems whatsoever.
2) Have you scanned with both the anti virus utility AND MalwareBytes?
3) Try a clean boot (MSCONFIG - startup tab - prevent everything from loading with the system and reboot). What happensOne solution would be to install another browser for her. Doesn't solve the PROBLEM with IE but might less hassle than trying to resolve the problem with IE. Next to IE, Firefox is the most commonly used browser. Chrome and Opera are also fine browsers.

IMO, IE users may find Firefox the easiest to adapt to; I use it as my default browser. But, I recently tried Opera (which I'm typing this post from) and find it to be quite satisfactory.

Solve : Laptop Randomly Shuts Off?

Answer»

I am having a problem with my Satellite Laptop. It was bought about 3 YEARS ago and works fine except at random times during the day and night, WHETHER we are using it or not, the computer completely shuts down. We have Windows Vista. I'm not real computer savvy so if you need to know more info about the computer ASK and I will try and find out.

Thank You in Advance for your help. Based on the scant information you've provided it could be pretty much anything from a bad power supply to failing hardware to, well, pretty much any number of things. How old is that satellite laptop?

Certain satellite laptops with Mobile Pentium 4 Prescott CPUs were notorious for overheating (and shutting themselves off as a result).

If it's still under warranty (highly unlikely), call Toshiba.

If it's not...then try cleaning out the vent holes with canned air. You may have to go as far as removing and reseating the heat sink (using new thermal paste, of course). Even then, the P4 SATELLITES will still give you grief.

Otherwise, try one of those laptop COOLING pads and NEVER remove the laptop from it...Quote from: killerb255 on March 25, 2010, 11:51:08 AM

Solve : Anoying Crashes?

Answer»

Hi. I'm having some trouble with my computer. If you need any more details, please ask. I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum or anything.

Okay. Sometimes, when I'm using this PC, usually involving the DVD DRIVE, it crashes, and a greenish textured pattern appears on the screen, and a buzzing through the audio output. This is frustrating as I have to use the front power buttons to restart it, DISRUPTING my FOLDING, and everything else. I was wondering if I could do anything to fix it, or stop it?

Just incase it's needed I've attatched some system specifications.

Thanks in advance,
James.

Solve : genuine windows?

Morning all my problem is i had a genuine copy of windows7 on my computer but had a problem with two usb ports on front.
i took it back to the shop and they fixed it,but the motherboard was faulty so they changed it.now when i turn on my computer it tells me my copy of windows 7 is not genuine it tells me to activate it with my key but when i put it in it say's
you can't use this key on this computer. any suggstions.

thank you. Some info: Description of the Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications application. I believe the basic issue here is that the change of motherboard is making Windows think it has been INSTALLED on a different computer, which would be a violation of the software license agreement for an OEM version of Windows. So, you'll need to resolve this with Microsoft. I believe this can be done by telephone but I don't know the number. I believe it MAY appear somewhere if you run through the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification (KB905474) provided on the link I posted.

If you can wait awhile longer, patio may see this and post. I believe he KNOWS the PHONE number to contact at Microsoft. As Soybean ASKS...so shall he recieve...

North America : (800) 936-5800 Thanks chaps i realy appreciate you taking the time to reply.Hi Soybean/Patio.thanks once again for your help. i contacted Microsoft and they reactivated my windows7.

So, complete directories copying from XP to Win 7, is what i want, without the anoying ownership thing(security)It works the same in Win7...

Solve : Please help me switch from Ubuntu to Vista?

Answer»

Can someone walk me through the process of reinstalling Vista? I am not trying to dual boot or anything. I just want to get it back. I have all of the necessary drivers and the OS disk. I am stuck at the part where I need to choose which partition or hard drive I want to download the OS to. When I try to pick one, it says I need drivers, and when I tried to download them off the driver disk which was included when I bought my COMPUTER, it just was not working. Someone please help me. I am FAIRLY KNOWLEDGEABLE with computers, but this is just frustrating me. Thanks in advance for you assistance.

-ECR0Some would say haha.. but I won't..

repost in the linux sectionSystem specs please?

If there's a SATA hard drive involved on its own separate AHCI or RAID controller, then you'll need to put those drivers on a flash drive and load them during the time you're asked which hard drive (or partition) to install to.

Also, Linux uses other file SYSTEMS that Windows doesn't recognize. You may have to format the drive (once it's detected by the Vista installer) back to NTFS.

Solve : Intermittent shutdown when plugging in to USB post?

Answer»

I have Windows7 Ultimate - 32 bit for my OS. Every so often my computer will shut down when I insert a thumb drive or other device into any USB port. It occurs maybe once every 5 plug ins, and it doesn't matter which device I'm using.

I was told by the shop that built my system that the problem is with Win 7 and that Microsoft is aware of it, and has a 'fix' for affected machines.

I have been unable to locate the issue on the Microsoft website.

Can anyone help?To my knowledge this is not a Win7 issue or glitch...

Sounds like a bad port to me...
Is it just the one ? ?Quote from: patio on March 09, 2010, 09:01:46 AM

Thanks for the tips. SOMETHING to definitely consider. When it shuts down does it just suddenly switch off?

Sounds like either faulty hardware or software. I'd rule out software first really, check that all drivers are up-to-date and make sure there aren't any USB or general updates on the Manufacturer's support site for your PC.Yep, when it acts up, the computer just shuts off.

All drivers are up to date.Quote from: earlk on March 09, 2010, 08:56:40 AM

First, you said "any USB port", but later you refer to the "2 USB ports on the front". Does this happen with ports on back, also?

Thanks for catching me on that. The ports in the back are not a problem... they have my printer, scanner and keyboard (always plugged in). The two at the front is where I will plug in a card reader/camera, thumb drive or a phono unit. Any device into either of the 2 ports at the front will cause the problem. Again, most of the time there is no issue. Very intermittent.I have the same problem with my tower PC running Win XP. In my case, the computer restarts rather than just shutdown. It's as though I had hit reset button on front.

Based on observation, it seems to be more likely to happen when humidity is low. In other words, it seems as though the front USB ports have extreme sensitivity to the slightest electrical contact when the humidity is low and the chance of static electricity being generated by walking across the carpeted FLOOR is present.

So, I usually, although not always, avoid using the front ports. If you still have unused ports on back, a USB extension cord is a way to maintain the convenience of having access to them up front. Here's one: Nippon Labs Beige 3 ft. USB cable A/Male to A/Female extension USB cable Model USB-3-MF . If you don't have any more open ports on back without disconnecting a device you normally leave connected, additional ports can be added by installing a PCI USB card, such as ones listed here.

I had a similar problem, but with Windows XP. About two months ago I was restoring a friend's computer. It was an older Gateway desktop. Turned out it was a driver issue. I used the driver that Microsoft provided through Windows Update instead of the driver that came on the Gateway driver disc. When I restored the system for the second time, I used the Gateway driver disc first, then applied updates from Windows Update and never had a problem.

For what it's worth, it was all six ports - 4 on the back and 2 in front - that caused the issue. If I plugged in anything besides a keyboard and mouse, the computer just shut down immediately as if I pulled the plug.

You might try getting a powered USB hub for < $30 and plug it into one of the good read USB ports. Otherwise, if it is a new PURCHASE, I would return it or tell the shop where
you got it to fix it. If you still have a warranty, they should cover it. They should search for the fix for you since you are the customer.

Good luck! Thanks guys, I'll most likely take it back to the shop as the 'puter is new.Quote from: soybean on March 13, 2010, 12:59:36 PM

I haven't seen a reset button in years... do they still feel the same, that good ol' feeling of giving up and trashing Windows for Workgroups when it's really just got up and gone to the shops for some of Millie's cookies.

Solve : Search Box After Sleep?

Answer»

Whenever my Win 7 64-bit PC comes out of Sleep, I have a Windows Search BOX on my desktop. How do I stop this from appearing?WELL, my first suggestion would be to not use either Sleep or Hibernate. Neither function was truly perfected by Microsoft. They work fine for some FOLKS and cause problems for others. I'd suggest setting the hd & display to power down after a defined period of inactivity. I believe you'll find this a better method of saving power, wear & tear.

I recognize this doesn't actually answer your question, but I hope it does provide a workable alternative solution.I solved this by updating the software for my keyboard.

Solve : Windows 7 as an option??

Hey guys I need your input PLEASE. I am thinking of changing to windows 7?

Could someone please let me know how they find windows 7 and if they think it is a good move

My vista is getting a bit old and irritating now Time for a change Windows XP SP3 is the most stable, fastest for gaming of the Microsoft OS.

Windows 7 Ultimate is a great option, not as fast as WinXP SP3 but uses DirectX10+ and more media, effects.

Win7 is basically Vista, with all the bugs and crap removed from it.
Throw Vista out the window, seriously it is a memory hog and the worst of the three. All four of those are false.

It's none of those things. If you ask anybody when XP was released windows 98 was more stable. and it was faster for gaming. What the *censored* changed in the time frame since then? Oh, yeah, XP is no longer the latest one so it's no longer "slow and dopey" as was commonly said.

And neither one compares to windows 95 in speed today. What's your point?

If you even NOTICE a slowdown with windows 7 as compared to windows XP, then your hardware is too old to handle windows 7. end of story.

I'm REALLY REALLY REALLY sick of hearing this.

People say "bugs" and "crap" but they can name neither. they have absolutely no idea what they are talking about half the time. What bugs? what crap? Citations please.

Right now, guess what's using more then 5 times as much RAM as anything other then superfetch. It's not explorer. it's not anything that is part of windows.

it's firefox.

Should I dump firefox based on the fact that it consumes more memory then Internet Explorer or Opera? No.

Additionally, None of the memory management was changed between NT 6 and NT 6.1. anybody who says so is talking out their *censored*.

Anyway, I have Windows 7 on my laptop and Vista on my desktop and honestly there is nothing notable about windows 7. most of the enhancements are little "hey, neat" things, like dragging windows to the top of the screen maximizes them, and dragging to the side tiles, etc. I guess it really depends how much you'd have to pay for it.

Honestly? I find the differences between Windows 3.0 and 3.1 a *censored* of a lot more noticeable then the differences between Vista and 7.

Good post BC Most people who bash Vista used it for 2 weeks or less...
Or were asked to fix a Vista machine and quickly realised they didn't know as much as they think they did...I happened to have all three OS on separate desktops/laptop, WinXP SP3, Vista Home, and Win7 Ultimate. Vista use to be on the i7 Core, best specs, and the other two performed better (for gaming benchmarks). I have not bench them together as they are different specs, but did swap them over at one point.

None of the computers have had a crash or freeze except for Vista (due to compatiblity issues).

But don't believe me, go read some reviews comparing the three, go look at the benchmarks.

For example:

WinXP is clearly faster than the three, specially for gaming.
Win7 started off the slowest, but improving and uses less memory. Has better support for newer technologies.
Vista is more media, but Win7 is basically a patched version of Vista, they have taken feedback from Vista and removed what people hated so much about it. Vista Service Pack has fixed some of the problems, but still major issues.

I didn't compare the older OS because not MANY people would go for those options as they are discontinued and not supported. If you want the best OS, it could be even Linux depending on what you are wanting out of your computer.

Microsoft is actually trying to discontinue XP in the future and have people on Vista upgrade to Win7...

If you are really really sick of hearing Vista is utter crap, you either don't care about performance or haven't tried Win7 (which is a cleaner version of their mess up)!Quote from: Azzaboi on March 12, 2010, 10:23:57 AM

benchmarking tools are completely trivial and meaningless. Especially in this case. You'll note that the program is running on Windows XP 32-bit.

Notable? yes.

This means that the 64-bit windows versions are running the 32-bit benchmarking tool. obviously the writer is unaware that On 64-bit windows, all 32-bit programs run in a penalty box which virtualizes everything again. so the 64-bit windows benchmarks are WRONG, and I suspect the author is fully aware of this, actually. Now, the benchmarks are accurate for 32-bit games- at least partially- but most games nowadays also have 64-bit versions, and I know for a fact that my copy of crysis runs a lot faster with the 64-bit executable then the 32-bit executable. I also don't see how a analysis omitting an entire architecture point can still be regarded as any sort of evidence to anything. The author is just a crafty git who knows his readership (people such as yourself) are simply unaware of these things. The reason is simple- it's a lot easier to criticize something old that people are familiar with then something new that they are not.

Quote
"but Win7 is basically a patched version of Vista, they have taken feedback from Vista and removed what people hated so much about it".... "but still major issues".
And yet you still provide no actual citations of these things that "people hated" and the "major issues" that are still present that were fixed in Vista.

Quote

Windows XP isn't supported either. Which should come as no surprise. it was released 9 years ago. And you know what people were saying 9 years ago?

EXACTLY... and I'm not even exaggerating- replace the technology names, and the OS names in a 10 year old XP review and you've got a Vista review and vice versa.

Yeah, it's called a "product lifecycle" you might want to look it up sometime. And XP is far from the only product to get a extension on it's supported LIFESPAN, so did windows 98SE. And you know what? "In the future" they will discontinue Windows Vista and Windows 7! hardly reasons not to use them now.

Quote
and have people on Vista upgrade to Win7...
yeah! and you know what happened when they released windows 3.1, even though it was nearly the same as 3.0 in many ways?

They said people should upgrade! It's almost like- oh, I dunno- they're a company that wants you to buy their product! Dear gawd! It's a revelation!

Quote

perhaps you should read my post, namely the area where I note SPECIFICALLY my experience with windows 7:

Quote
Anyway, I have Windows 7 on my laptop and Vista on my desktop and honestly there is nothing notable about windows 7. most of the enhancements are little "hey, neat" things, like dragging windows to the top of the screen maximizes them, and dragging to the side tiles, etc. I guess it really depends how much you'd have to pay for it.

Another interesting "argument" that comes up is that "Windows 7 is totally different" and they base that claim Solely on the changed UI of the included applets.

I've noted this before, but calc.exe was completely rewritten for windows 2000- the calculation engine was completely revamped. Nobody cared. The program ran better but it didn't look better, so nobody gave a *censored*. Basically this is a case of people who haven't got a clue what they are talking about once again making vast hand-wavy generalizations based on what they see rather then actually researching the history of the applets themselves. You see- this is important, but when you don't change the insides, nobody notices.

And even when you follow that tenet, you notice discrepancies. For one thing- why was nobody tripping over themselves with happiness when Vista allowed command prompt windows to be themed, when XP did not? Why did nobody care?

Also, the biggest things people complain about are UI changes- the office ribbon, for example. or Aero- or Luna before that. They don't complain because it's inferior, they complain because it's different, any reasons they give are contrived. They can easily say "it reduces performance" but when your PC is adequate, neither Luna nor Aero have much of a performance impact at all. it's completely fabricated fodder based entirely on their own biassed perceptions. If somebody uses an OS they hate, they are going to notice things they dislike a *censored* of a lot easier then things that they do like, and whenever they find something they do like they will always rationalize it away somehow.

Anyway- I like windows 7, it's good. But it is by no means this "magical panacea" that fixed windows Vista's "bugs".

Which brings up, yet again, this issue of people simply saying "X is full of bugs". If I say your face is made of cheese, or that the world is square, does t hat make it true? No, I'd need a sampling of your nose Gouda or an analysis of vertices to prove it. This is called "evidence" and is presented when trying to "make a point" making meaningless generalizations merely reinforces the fact that you really don't know what your talking about and all your doing is regurgitating stuff you read elsewhere. Additionally, even if said bugs exist, we are of course forgetting that Windows XP, even after three service packs, still has bugs as well. Why don't these count? is XP somehow exempt from an attempt at contempt? XP has a heck of a lot more showstoppers then Windows Vista.

Oh hey, let's run some queries with ol' google!

Code: [Select]site:support.microsoft.com "BUG:" + "Windows XP"

hits:

2,600

Code: [Select]site:support.microsoft.com "BUG:" + "Windows Vista"

647

What's this? less then HALF the KB articles?

Windows 7 gives 196 for a similar query.

Additionally, most of these bugs are fixed. but XP was never this bugless wonder that people insist on making it out to be.Those have to be some of the finest posts I've seen so far on Windows 7 and the sickly attitude of those dogs that go around talking about 'vista but without the bugs'. Want Vista but without the bugs? Get Vista SP2, because that's the closest you're gonna get, and most of any 'bugs' to speak of no longer bother me in SP2, so it has to be reasonably 'bug-free'.

Really I give credit to BC_Programmer for the brilliant posts, but BC; what's this all about:

Erm, XP came out in 2001, Vista in 2007, and 7 in 2009. So that's 9 years of XP, 3 years of Vista, and about half a year of 7 to document bugs. If you look at the dates you'll see that most of XP's bugs were written reasonably evenly spread over 2001-2007, that's a period of 6 years. I think the reason there are less bugs in the db for Vista and 7 is partly down to the fact that they certainly haven't documented most 'bugs' yet; they haven't had the time.

Another reason I'm not keen on this evidence is that it was provided by Microsoft. Microsoft were very likely to tone down the number of bugs by writing less articles about problems, especially since even with XP it was rare your problem was documented, it just sat there making MS looking bad.

The worst part is that the search terms are pretty bad, try searching for just 'XP' and 'Vista', rather than 'Microsoft XP' and 'Microsoft Vista' and you'll get VERY different results:

Code: [Select]site:support.microsoft.com "BUG:" + "Vista"
about 9,170 hits

Code: [Select]site:support.microsoft.com "BUG:" + "XP"
about 3,240 hits, and most of these are for software with 'XP' in the name (Media Player XP, Office XP, etc.)

So it turns out MS has actually documented loads of bugs to do with Vista!

Oh, and no, I didn't do a search for '7', for obvious reasons...

I agree with what you're saying BC, but that just isn't a very good way of showing 'bugs'. Actually, I don't think there is one that would be very reliable. I was running out of idea at that point in the post.

there are a million other reasons it doesn't count bugs; it will pick up windows 98SE or 2000 bugs that say "this issue was fixed in windows XP" and so forth. Really all it said is that XP is older then the other two.

windows 98 brings up 2,080, heh, 95 gives 3 thousands something.

windows 3.1 only gives a few hundred, for some reason, but I know that's wrong because my MSDN discs from Apr 2000 have at least 600 pages of BUG: entries for it.

Quote

because the problem was almost never with windows itself in those cases. I think they had some sort of minimum amount of people that encountered the bug, then they would post a article. There are some pretty esoteric ones on there, that's for sure.

Additionally, there are even BUG: entries for non MS applications. Because people were phoning MS "d00d, yur OS is crashin Lotus Notes"
In any case- my main point was of course that XP wasn't any more bug free then Windows Vista or 7; the main reason people have a strong preference for it is simply because it's familar.

Quote

Yep, I've never used Vista RTM myself, it had a number of issues. Although if memory serves the XP RTM was no better. Windows 7's RTM is probably something like a "SP1" because of the public beta (that is, most RTM type bugs are fixed).

The main thing that pisses me off is that as evidence they will say something like "but my second cousin's best friend's dog's previous owner's STEPDAUGHTER's old boyfriend used Vista and it crashed all the time!" as some sort of evidence that Vista is buggy. It's like their trying to prove that Vista sucks just based on that whole "6 degrees of separation" rule.

Anyways, regarding the original question- it really depends how much you have to pay for it. All you'll see in Windows 7 compared to Vista are a few UI features, and unless you do a clean install any "slowness" you're experience will almost certainly remain after an upgrade.

Loved the informative posts as always BC, I for one have Vista and the only 'bugs' I have are ones I have created myself by accident.I've had no bugs at all in Vista and I have it with about 3 years. I have however had a few freezes here and there with Windows 7.disregardRegarding the second post, I find that Windows XP SP3 is actually slower than Windows 7. If I could; I would use Windows 7 on my old laptop (Athlon 2.0Ghz, 2GB RAM, 80GB HD). It's really speedy on it, I just can't find drivers for Windows 7 with such an old computer. HP doesn't support it. But Windows 7, any version except starter, is a very good choice for almost any computer, providing you can find drivers. Quote from: Azzaboi on March 12, 2010, 01:25:40 AM

Grrrr, I hate this crap about 'memory hogging'. I'm sorry but when my computer boots I give ownership of the RAM over to the OS (who else is gonna use it?). Vista is far more efficient with RAM, and as long as you have 1GB+ (which today most computers have) you won't experience constant Page File Writing and general memory lag. Vista uses a lot more RAM than XP, yes, so what? Take a look at the RAM requirements for all Windows OSs, and then you'll get the idea of the trend of what is to be expected if you don't underrstand the concept. I know certain games and programs use lots of RAM too, but this isn't an issue if you have 2GB+ of RAM (or 3GB+, depending on what you're playing). To be fair, if you have a computer with 1GB of RAM running Vista, it's not the best setup for running games. It might have worked with XP, so here's the choice plain and simple for people with low RAM: Vista or Games, not both.

Come on now, benchmarks are like IQ tests; they have nothing to do with the price of eggs.

A good analysis would show you that actually they all perform better under different conditions in terms of gaming.

XP favours single x86 processors and older games.
Vista was the best at running DX10 games until Win 7 came along, but it plays late-XP period games the fastest for some reason. It also runs a lot of games designed specifically for Vista fastest (but that really speaks for itself).
Windows 7 is probably the best for x64 processors (with x64 OS installed, obviously). I'd also go so far as to say it's the fastest for the latest games, and DX10 especially.
Both Vista and 7 work better with multiple processors/cores.

Microsoft is actually trying to discontinue XP in the future and have people on Vista upgrade to Win7...

Well yeah, what do you think happened to all the other Windows OSs?

Quote from: Azzaboi on March 12, 2010, 10:23:57 AM
If you are really really sick of hearing Vista is utter crap, you either don't care about performance or haven't tried Win7 (which is a cleaner version of their mess up)!

To be fair, I think BC knows quite a bit more about 'Performance' and Windows 7 than you do, because of the stuff you've been going on about benchmarking and the way you seem to think Windows 7 works. I don't think you understand either very well at all.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 12, 2010, 02:33:43 PM
because the problem was almost never with windows itself in those cases. I think they had some sort of minimum amount of people that encountered the bug, then they would post a article. There are some pretty esoteric ones on there, that's for sure.

I'm not so sure, I've had loads of probs with XP (the actual OS) in the past and there's never anything useful for it in the KB or anywhere on MS.com, I'm sure that part of that's to do with just plain bad luck, but MS has always been quite two-faced with 'support'; 'helping' on one side, but generally ignoring and only caring about $ on the other. In fact, MS is just plain awful with support, and I think pretty much everyone can vouch for that in some form.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 12, 2010, 02:33:43 PM
my main point was of course that XP wasn't any more bug free then Windows Vista or 7; the main reason people have a strong preference for it is simply because it's familar.

100% agreement.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 12, 2010, 02:33:43 PM
Windows 7's RTM is probably something like a "SP1" because of the public beta (that is, most RTM type bugs are fixed).

Too true, it's the only reason I didn't wait longer to get Windows 7.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 12, 2010, 02:33:43 PM
The main thing that pisses me off is that as evidence they will say something like "but my second cousin's best friend's dog's previous owner's Stepdaughter's old boyfriend used Vista and it crashed all the time!" as some sort of evidence that Vista is buggy. It's like their trying to prove that Vista sucks just based on that whole "6 degrees of separation" rule.

Personally I'm tired of explaining why Vista isn't *censored* to people who want Win 7, it's hard to prove it's not *censored* because I'm arguing against constant untrue axioms and general lies.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on March 12, 2010, 02:33:43 PM
Anyways, regarding the original question- it really depends how much you have to pay for it. All you'll see in Windows 7 compared to Vista are a few UI features, and unless you do a clean install any "slowness" you're experience will almost certainly remain after an upgrade.

I don't think it's worth the hassle netnerd, I think you'll find that there just aren't enough advantages for Windows 7 for it to be worth all the work, because installing a new OS is always a ton of work. Partitions, drivers, and getting used to the new *censored* thing, as well as reinstalling all your old programs (because upgrading is never going to be worth it). Please heed my advice and don't install Windows 7, it's only going to cause undue hassle.Anyone else getting a real sense of deja vu?

Solve : Windows 7 - Windows Media Player?

Answer»

I was thinking of upgrading my PC to Windows 7 Home Premium, I was wondering does the Windows MEDIA Player in Windows 7, rip and burn music to a CD pretty well or do you still need 3RD party software for that? Media player is generic to all windows VERSIONS.. what you can do in one OS is the same in any other.

Solve : Vista system does not start - User partition is corrupt or missing?

Answer»

I am using an alienware SYSTEM with a raid0 SETUP. This morning it was slow, so I went to the kitchen for a coffee. When i returned the screen was black / off. I restarted it then it said it could not find a bootable disk.

I was told by alienware to use the recovery dvd (seems to be their only answer). But as many others I do not have a backup. Is it possible to get the data of those disks?

I made a bootable CD (using vistaPE) but I am not familiar with all the tools. I can see both SSD (samsung DRIVES) and one shows a partition (disk) but i cant get it back to work.

Any help is welcome!

MarkCan you boot in safe mode?

Solve : safemode troubleshoot?

[my problem]
I have a problem with my trouble shooting. It would seem that being in safe mode for some time will cause my operating system to shut off suddenly. what happens first is that I'll start to hear my fan run very hard and loud and usually when that happens it indicates my LAPTOP is about to shut off. my operating system runs just fine in normal mode. I'm still trying to learn what I can to help fix my error.

antivirus: avast 5.0
antispyware: avast 5.0, malwarebytes, super antispyware

here's a overview of what I've tried to do so far.
[suggested things I've tried but still no resolve]
1) first I was suggested to download SafeBootKeyRepair.exe by sUBs to repair safe mode however the said program was not compatible with my operating system so I was not able to use that method.
2)second thing suggested to me was to run a sfc /scannow but I didn't find any errors in doing so and this did not solve my problem with safe mode shutting down after a while.
3)I did have some viruses at the time and was suggested to following a guide to removing them. some of the things I've done so far to try and fix this problem is checking for excess malware. I got rid of temporary files and cleaned with disk cleaner. I've used updated malwarebytes to scan my pc and also used avast 5.0 to scan to clean out viruses I had. I used super antispyware to help finish and got rid of some tracking cookies. I also used blacklight to scan for rootkits but found none. I was asked to post a hijack this log so someone could look at it. I was than asked to delete some entries in my hijack program after posting my log. after deleting specific entries in my hijack program I than turned off system restore and turned it back on so I could delete possible infected files in system restore. I ran avast and malwarebytes again to find anyting else. I followed up and posted another hijack this log for another evaluation and everything in the log seem to be okay.
after this whole process I tried to use safe mode and it seem to work for some time. safe mode ran much longer than it usually did so I suspected that it was possibly fixed. It ran for about 7 mins. I assumed it was working so I just rebooted into normal mode. usually it would run for about a couple MINUTES or just shut down before even loading when I noticed safe mode was shutting down. at this point I thought my safe mode troubleshoot had been solved.
days later after thinking my problem was solved. I noticed again I got another VIRUS so I cleaned it out with an updated malwarebytes. I scanned with avast. I also used super antispyware to get rid of tracking cookies after a full scan. the next morning I decided to boot in safe mode to quick scan with my malwarebytes for extra percaution. It ran for about 10-15 mins or so. the scan completed in safe mode and found nothing. I than closed my malwarebytes to open super antispyware to do a scan with that too but that's when I start to notice my fan starting to act up and working really hard. eventually my pc shut down before even finishing the scan. everything in normal mode seem to work just fine still.

I originally thought a virus was causing my laptop so shut down in safe mode but after going to all the steps to thoroughly purge my system of malwares and viruses my issue is still present. I have a feeling something else must be wrong.
can anyone offer me any more insight as to how I can resolve this.

I did a battery check but that seems to be in good condition.
I did a hp heath check to see If I could possible find a solution but I can't tell if any of these things on the list would be relevant to fixing my safe mode troubleshoot.

updates Frugal 1xSystem BIOS
updates Conexant HD FR Audio driver
updates HP wireless assistant
updates HP quick Play /DVD Play
Performance Informational: External display not detected when lid is closed
performance Informational: windows vista visual effects performance tuning
performance information: windows vista sound troubleshooting
performance Informational: windows vista Microphone troubleshooting.

do I need to Update my laptop's BIOS firmware? I don't quite know what the first item "furgal1xsystem bios" is.

do I need to check my fan setting for safe mode?
excuse any grammar errors, I'm proof reading here and there.
The only thing that comes to mind here is your normal fan control functions are loaded in Windows...but not in safe mode...
I wouldn't flash the BIOS for this condition...
Also it would be worth it to visit the Virus and Spyware section here and post the LOGS to see if they give you a clean bill of health.

PS. Why is it necessary to run in safemode so often ? ?Quote from: patio on March 16, 2010, 06:57:55 AM

alright thanks. I'm gonna check my fan settings. I just gonna figure out how to do that and what settings will keep it from shutting down so sudden. I wasn't sure if flashing my BIOS was gonna be helpful or not. I was hoping to get some insight about if I need to upgrade it or if my bios is affecting my condition. I'll also recheck and post another log just to be safe. I plan to try to install host files as soon as I become familiar with using them.

I just wanna be sure I have safe mode at hand because it's an extra tool I can use in case I need to use it when things aren't working normally in normal mode and can only work in safe mode. sometimes I'd come across some errors that required me to run a certain program in safe mode but I couldn't so I'd have to find an alternative. I'd like to be able to use safe mode also in case some functions become hijacked by a virus. I was told safe mode can disable some viruses functions like it's hijacking function. I'd like to have safe mode as an extra tool. someone told me that some viruses may hide in folders safe mode will MISS so I'll scan in normal mode first but I also read somewhere that safe mode can uncover some viruses hiding places in safe mode so I do scans in there too. This makes no sense.. as safe mode will or will not work dependant on the situation..Generally safe mode does work and you can learn nothing by utilising it continues or make it better.Quote from: Mulreay on March 16, 2010, 04:49:15 PM

It makes perfect sense. Read it again.

In either case, Safe mode is not safe from viruses at all. In fact, many strains make things worse when you boot in safe mode.

You need to stop listening to random someones. The only reason you'd be able to find something in safe mode and not normal mode is because a component of the virus that runs in normal mode wasn't running and you could now see what it was masking. However this is no longer quite so common since malware writers have stumbled upon the "safeboot" registry key enabling their rootkits to hide files even in safe mode.

"safe mode" applies to hardware issues with drivers; it is not designed to be a special virus busting mode of windows. Quote from: Mulreay on March 16, 2010, 04:49:15 PM

oh interesting. so do you suggest not running scans in safe mode at all? like for older viruses? aside from viruses, my biggest concern is when i'm trying to fix an error and I'm instructed to use a certain program in safe mode. I'm worried of my pc shutting off suddenly while a program is running and causing damage. Quote from: Mulreay on March 16, 2010, 05:13:49 PM

that's quite alright. Initially I'm just trying to resolve my issue. I don't mind absorbing any extra feedback or knowledge along the way. Well, if you have an up to date AV, you're only going to be getting new viruses, not old ones, and many of the new ones are designed to also be infectious/active when you boot into safe mode.

Anyway- If you can run a tool in normal mode, there usually isn't much more it would be able to do in safe mode.

Either way, since your problem appears hardware/driver related all I can suggest is to maybe update those drivers. Do NOT update the BIOS just because of this issue. a PC that won't boot into safe mode is a lot better then one that doesn't boot at all.

Solve : I need help!?

I recently renamed by administrator account from "Asima" to "Khawaja".

So now when I go to my computer, C drive, and "users", I see BOTH "Khawaja" and "Asima". Basically every file is duplicated. When I go to "Asima", it has all my pics, and when I go to "Khawaja", it has those same pics.

Would it be safe to delete "Asima"?

Thanks. You can try, but the system will not let you delete the default admin account. You can copy everything from that account to the new ONE and then ignore the first one. BTW, before messing with admin accounts you should always CREATE a disk image.Yeah hes right, i did that last week, itl ask you if you want to keep FILES, say yes and a file will appear on your desktop to the new user account, id keep that as a back up file on a cd or a flash drive just in case something happens

Solve : Windows Errors and Updates??

Every morning when I exit my screen saver and unlock my account, there's an application that wants to run, titled "Windows errors and updates". this wants to run every SINGLE morning. what is this? can i somehow make it so that i dont have to give it permission and it can automatically do its thing? If its windows updates then all you do is upen windows updates, go to settings and it should ask in a drag down bar if you WANT to install automatically, then you set the time it updates automatically.Quote

Mark HI there, can you post your hardware and laptop/desktop brand/model number PLEASE?If desktop, turn all power saving FEATURES off.
I don't expect those features working flawlessly even in Windows 27.Agreed. Sleep and Hibernate have ALWAYS been buggy (they work fine for some, not for others). A better solution is to set the hd and display to power down after a defined period of inactivity.

any other way to boot files off disk ? or whatUnfortunately with both a laptop and Norton Ghost you are going to need a working optical drive to repair this.

One thing you can try though since you are restoring an image would be to grab one of these:

You can then hook the drive up to a working Desktop and try it from there...
No guarantees though...i haven't used Ghost for years.
