Solve : How do you get rid of spam??

Answer»

Hi -
I am running Vista Home Basic 32 bit. I use Yahoo mail and get a lot of spam. I think my SpamGuard is a Yahoo mail program or maybe it is a Windows program. I was told that I should use Spybot Search & Destory. Is this a good choice? Thanks BobSpamGuard and Search & Destory don't do the same thing.

When using a web email like yahoo mail you are limited to use the tools they offer you. You have to make sure that they are set how you want them to BLOCK as much spam as possible.

Spoiler -
Thanks for the REPLY. I will check my settings for SpamGuard. The PERSON who wanted me to use Spybot must get e-mail some way other than Yahoo.
Thanks BobIn Y! Mail, make sure to mark any spam messages in your Inbox, as Spam.

See picture:

When they are in the Spam box, leave them there.

===========

If SpamGuard is not on, then do the following: (Assuming All-New Yahoo! Mail)

Click Options > Mail Options

Then, on the left, click Spam.

Right beside Control Spamguard, PLACE a check next to Automatically Send Suspected Spam to my Spam Folder.

Click Save Changes button. Then, click the Back to mail button.Jay -
Thanks I have my Spam Guard on but I still get some spam. This is not a big thing. I can live with it. Bob You cannot get rid of spam messages it's a horrible fact.

All you can do is make sure they get sent to your spam folder... then as I and most people do delete them.
Do not try to to use there link to stop messages as this just fuels them to send more to you as it's now considered a monitored account.
It's a crappy situation but easily managed if you just click on 'this is spam' on your yahoo account then like me and most people delete the spam folder every day.

These people are scum and will keep sending you crap if you respond to them.
^^ Oh give me a break. I've gone without spam for a long time now. Quote from: DragonMaster Jay on March 16, 2010, 09:34:23 PM

^^ Oh give me a break. I've gone without spam for a long time now.

You must be really lucky, or you must have detected spam deleted by default or something.

Does spam taste good? I'm just wondering.... I think what mulreay means, is you cannot really them from sending you messages.

There are a lot of ways of SIMPLY not receiving them- nowadays most spam filtering is actually done by the mail server. Outlook/Thunderbird's spam filters just deal with whatever get's through that.Hi -
Thanks everybody. I think I have the best settings for what I have and I have learned to live with it. Bob

Solve : Hard Drive and free space?

Answer»

This is not really a problem compared to REAL PROBLEMS people have on here but has anyone ever seen your hard drive free space fluctuate without making any changes? Mine goes up and down between 5 to 10 gigs every two to five days on my laptop and my desktop. Should I be worried?

My specs on the desktop Specs on the laptop
320 GB Seagate Barracuda SATA 120 GB WD BEVS ATA
Nvidia 8600 GTS Nvidia GForce 7150m
4GB DDR2 RAM 667 MHz 3GB DDR2 soDimm
AMD Live 64x2 4400 2.3 GHz AMD Turion 64x2 2.0 GHzSounds like VOLUME shadow copy/previous versions and/or system restore, saving NEW checkpoints/copies and deleting older checkpoints/shadow copies.Yeah Thanks, I forgot about about that. It just seemed like a bit much and the fact I had NEVER seen it fluctuate in such large amounts before. So it had me kind of baffled.

I bought a laptop with W7. it has a wireless card that works fine. however, i TRY to hardwire it to my network and it will not connect. how do i do that? i try to connect to network and it automatically tries to go to the wireless.Go to Network Settings and select the connection you wantWell, I found out that you cant connect to the INTERNET by cat5 unless the wire is physically connected to the router.

.ahem...

*blink

*blink

Thank you for replying anyway. I APPRECIATE it. How were you trying to connect if you weren't connected to the router or modem? NEVER mind - as long as you have it working.HAHA...no i was saying i connected the cable to my laptop but not to the router. dumb mistake. lolbetter off then me.

my router manual had a typo where the 5 was missing.

So, after some struggling I managed to get the CAT sedated and plug his tail into the ethernet port, and whaddya know! nothing happened! It was about that time I passed out from blood loss (cat's are very scratchy when you try to put there tail in a ethernet port for some reason).

Solve : Windows 7 OS Install?

Answer»

I have a Dell Dimension 5100 computer that has recently been Killed in action. The Hard drive is dead. I went ahead and replaced it with a NEW one. Only now whenever I try to install my WINDOWS 7 install disk it does not work. I have already GONE into BIOS and selected ''Boot Sequence'' then made sure that the Onboard or USB CD-Rom Device boots first from the CD. I keep getting the ''Floppy diskette failure'' message. Oh and yes, I DO have the Windows 7 Home Premium Software, I just purchased it from Amazon.com. I need help!!!! Does your computer have a floppy drive?
Is it listed in BIOS?
When you make BIOS boot order changes, do you press F10 on exit to SAVE changes?Well, when I go into BIOS it lists the following:

1 Onboard or USB CD-ROM Drive
2 Onboard or USB Floppy Drive (not present)
3 Onboard or SATA Hard Drive
4 Onboard or IDE Hard Drive
5 USB Device

And whenever I hit the Esc button it asks me whether or not I want to make:
More Changes, Save or Discard

Thanks for the help, I may have a faulty DVD Rom or CD-Rom drive I'm not sure.
Possible.
Move floppy drive to very last position and disable/remove it, if your BIOS allows it.
Press F10 to save changes.

Quote

And whenever I hit the Esc button it asks me whether or not I want to make:
More Changes, Save or Discard
Why exactly do you hit Esc button?

I assume, you put Win 7 DVD into the drive and you restart computer. Correct?Remove the floppy disk in the drive, and try it. Your PC is very low end to today's standards too.

Solve : Restarting problem. Power on = ok. Power off = ok. Restart = Freeze?

Answer»

I'm a newbie at this site- first post.

Since I BOUGHT the computer, about a year ago, the restart option has been a problem. When I click restart computer, the computer seems to shut down normally, PAUSE for a moment, as it should, and then when it would normally restart- it maintains a black screen and you can hear the motor running very hard. More notably, the motor makes a loud noise cyclically every three/four seconds. It will never stop. I have left it in the state (plugged in) for about 20 hours and it never restarts.

Interestingly, if i click START, shutdown- the computer shuts down properly and then will power on properly as well. The problem only arises when the restart function is used. Also, the problem occurs when a program prompts me to restart as well. (when you update something and it says "to finish update your computer must restart"...)

Toshiba Satellite M305D- S4830.
Vista Operating system
AMD Turion X2 Ultra 64

I'm not sure if any other info/specs would be helpful. Everything is "stock".

Any help would be appreciated GREATLY.

- JJDo you have the latest BIOS (v1.7 BIOS for M305-S4830)? If not, get it from the Toshiba website, flash it, and see if that fixes it.

Solve : Re:font of OS?

Answer»

hi guyz!!
cant we change the font of our OS? and why???
pls dont say its default..i want a good answer...yes. You can change the system font.

MAC OS 6 and 7 USE a font called "CHICAGO"
Mac OS 8 and 9... I can't remember, either Chicago or Charcoal... Charcoal is used on OSX I think.

Windows <=3.1 used a font simply called "System". Many people say it uses TERMINAL but they simply have bad vision and couldn't see the obvious fact that Terminal is Serif and System is not.

Windows 95,98, and ME used MS Sans Serif for most dialogs and windows.

Windows 2000 and XP use "Tahoma".

Windows Vista and 7 Use Segoe UI.hii...but where can i change it??? See How to Change the Default Fonts in Windows 7

Solve : Home page does not come up.?

Answer»

Hi -
I am running Vista Home Basic 32 bit. When I TURN on my computer it goes through the usual procedure until it gets to the panel where the home page is supposed to appear. At this point the panel that is showing has the 2 top lines but the bottom part where the home page is supposed to be, that is blank. I can STILL see my pointer and I can still move it. If I double click on the home icon the home page comes up. This just recently started. I have not done anything unusual. I have ran SuperSpyware and Malwarebyte but it had no effect. Any suggestions for a fix? Thanks Bob Home page (internet) or desktop?Allan -
Thanks for the REPLY. This occurs on the desk top before I get on the internet. After I click on the home page icon and the home page then the problem does not happen until the next time cut the power off and then restore the power and turn the computer on. I hope I am saying everthing clear enough. Thanks BobUnfortunately no, I do not understand what you are talking about. Please define what you mean by home page and describe EXACTLY what happens. Just to clarify, a home page is what opens when you open your browser. Also, what led up to this (what is different since the last time there were no problems - new hw, sw, virus, error, etc)?Allan -
I am not too swift. When I turn the power on (in the morning) I then turn the computer on, The computer automatically goes through a process and brings up my background picture. Then it brings up a panel which has the title bar and the menu bar. On the menu bar is the Home icon. The rest of the panel is blank. It will stay blank until I click on the Home icon. Then the rest of the panel fills in with things like mail, news, stock market, adds, etc. This used to fill in automatically. I can not think of anything I have done to cause this problem. This has only recently started and I am sure the best way to solve it is to do a restore but I am wondering what caused it and an easy way to fix it. Does that explain BETTER? Thanks Bob You're saying that your desktop, taskbar and notification area do not finish loading until you click on what you refer to as your "home icon" . I'd love to know what that "home icon" is - what exactly is the Home Icon?. And no, there is no way for us to know what caused this with the information you (haven't) provided.

You said you scanned with Super AntiSpyware and MalwareBytes. What about your anti virus utility? Did you do a full scan with that?

I can also walk you through a clean boot and we can see what happens, but I'd first like the answers to the above TWO questions.Allan -
In the Menu bar there is a house and the word Home. That is what I call the home icon. When I am doing anything on the computer (such as checking mail) and I want to go back to my home page all I do is click on this icon. It is an icon isn't it? I have not ran an avast anti virus scan. Any other suggestions? BobOkay, that icon should be in IE. Either I'm confused or I'm confusing you, so I'm going to back out and perhaps someone else will know what you're talking about. Sorry Bob, I just don't want to confuse the issue any further.Allan -
You are right of course . When I turn my computer on I get a background picture. Down at the bottom is the IE icon which I click on. This brings up a panel (I guess it is called a panel) which has the title bar and the menu bar. The rest I have described. Never the less I will just do a restore back for a week or so and I am sure that will solve the problem. As I said before I was just hoping for a better way. Thanks for your time. Bob

Solve : Vista BSoD 0x000000f4?

Answer»

Okay, you know what? Let's start all this over, because the problem finally seems to be stabilizing into, well, one problem, instead of many. I recently installed a 500gb Western Digital into my laptop. It worked for a while, but I started having a problem. Every time I try to boot up my laptop, I get a BSoD. Error code 0x000000f4. It restarts my COMPUTER AUTOMATICALLY after the error, and tells me WINDOWS was shut down improperly. It then runs a chkdsk. These two processes are fixed every single time: taskkill.exe and taskeng.exe. If I attempt to boot up in safe mode, it just stops at the loading screen, and eventually restarts. I already did a system restore to before this was happening, it didn't help.

This BSoD always happens at the login screen. I click my account, type in my password, and hit enter. It goes to the welcome screen, and after a minute the screen turns black, though the mouse is still visible and movable. Then I get the error. I already checked my HDD's connection the laptop, and it is not loose. I highly doubt that this is another component of my laptop, because I had completely different problems before. Reinstalling Vista does not appear to help. I would prefer to not have to try it again.

I'm running Vista 64 Home on a HP Pavilion dv5. 500 gb Western Digital HDD.hmmmm...If you have reinstalled vista you've ruled that out. that error code is for an OS thread, and the fact that you can't boot into safe mode, leads me to think maybe it's the physical drive. is that a new drive, and what problems were you having before?Torrent Vista...

Sorry but i'll pass on this one.The problem I had with the last hard drive (250gb Hitachi) was that it would freeze constantly and all over the place. Especially if I was doing installs. No MATTER how many times I reinstalled vista, this happened. I was told (on this forum, actually) that it was most likely a bad hard drive. So I replaced it with my WD 500 gb. This drive is not new, but it is less than 8 months (though the hard drive in the computer was less than 18). When I first installed this drive, I had the same error code right away. So, naturally, I reinstalled it, since this was the first I had seen of the thing. The laptop would not boot up. It would freeze right before the Vista loading bar. This happened well over 20 times. Then, it just... started leading me to a command prompt. A command prompt that did not accept any commands, like chkdsk. So I reinstalled Vista again... And it worked. Everything was perfect and beautiful. For nine hours, perfect. Then I closed the laptop when I went to sleep, opened it up when I woke up, restarted it (since I had installed a mouse) and, lo-and-behold, freezing. I restarted it, and error screen. It did a chkdsk, but that didn't help. Then, the chkdsks started freezing. It said my master file table on my recovery drive (which was empty) was corrupt. So, I did a system restore to before I installed the mouse, and now I get only the error screen.

Sorry about the wall of text, and thank you for responding.

@Patio - I think you may be right on this one. And PLUS, I would be happy to no longer have to deal with all this HP crapware they supplied me with.

Solve : microsoft outlook email?

Answer»

I'm interested in finding out how I can view my emails in Outlook without the emails ever opening up. I was able to do this with Outlook Express but I can't seem to figure out how to do it in Microsoft Outlook. Is this possible and if so how? Any help would be greatly appreciated. ThanksWhy are you concerned about this? What is your key issue? You want to view an email without it opening up? What are you talking about? My guess is he's talking about turning off Preview Pane in Outlook Express. If this is not done, the body of the message is displayed in a separate pane when a message is selected from the part of the OE window that shows the list of messages in the Inbox or other OE folder. Turning off the Preview Pane may be VIEWED as a security step. It allows you to select a message and delete it without the body of the message being displayed.

bassin101, we're WAITING for you to clarify your question. Ok, let me explain. In Outlook Express I can single click an email and I am able to read it in the preview pane without actually opening the email. To open the email, I would have to double click it, which I never have to do. If possible, I want to do the same thing in Microsoft Outlook. Not receiving a virus is my main goal here.Again, I guess I'm not following. Once you read it, it's "open". As long as there are no attachments that you are opening you're fine.Quote from: bassin101 on March 20, 2010, 12:47:14 PM

If you see it in Preview Pane, then it's been opened. The only difference, with double clicking on a message, is that it's then opened in separate window. But, again, either way, it's been opened. Again, I thought you were talking about having Preview Pane turned off.

I THINK your worries about using Outlook are not based on a good understanding of security features in Outlook. For example, unless you've disabled certain features in Outlook, it will not display images in an HTML email unless you tell it to do so. I really appreciate everyones responses. Maybe I'm not understanding Outlook Express. I assumed that when you see that you GOT an email there is a small closed envelope next to the new email (meaning that it is not open). When you highlight this mail by single clicking on it, it would show up in the preview pane. But when you double click on it, the envelope will be in the open position (meaning that it has now been opened). I know you can manually set up Outlook Express to do this. I was wanting to set up Microsoft Outlook to do the same.Quote from: Allan on March 20, 2010, 12:49:20 PM

Im using the newest internet explorer. Recently a problem occured where facebook, aim, youtube, online GAMES, online flash games, some email, and ads would not work. Most pages wouldn't DISPLAY the entire page. The attatched file picture shows this on my facebook page. I downloaded adobe flash player 10 and i updated all of the programs i have tied with internet explorer. What should i do ?can you reattach your picture or paste it here?

I do not see your attachment link anywhere here, sorry about that, the size was to big, i had to make the picture have a lower quality so id fit 700kb

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]I'd attempt to start with resetting internet explorer, for instructions, see this link.

It should not erase your bookmarked list, but I'd back them up anyway if they're important to you.

This can tell you if it were only a software error (something to do with IE only) or whether or not problem was caused by some other REASON.
Well a few things come to mind when I look at the picture.

1) What is the speed of your internet connection? Sometimes my browser does this too because my speed is 768kbps and when I'm browsing a lot some of the pages I'm visiting don't finish loading completely because they time out.

2) Have you recently installed any "plugins" to IE? If so try starting IE in safe mode. To do this go to START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > SYSTEM TOOLS > IE (NO ADDONS).

3) It's also possible some type of malware might have infected your pc and is causing this. Have you already tried scanning your pc?OMG !!! Dude your the greatest, IT WORKS !!!!

Solve : Shortcut problem?

Answer»

Hello there.
I've got a problem. My Windows 7 computer, which has had Windows 7 for about 3 MONTHS, has begun to show all the shortcuts(and i mean ALL, in start, on the desktop, i can open nothing but when i GO to the source of the program), as the same program. They are all opened with the same program, in this case it is VLC media player.
The problem started when i changed my icons to show what type they were, like .xls .EXE etc. I've changed that setting back, but it did not help.

I really don't know how to configure this back.
Can somebody help me?http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950505Are you saying that if you click on the VLC player icon it doesn't start the player but takes you to the folder where the program resides? And then you can start the program from there. The point I don't get in the help article is where it says the icon opens a different program.Quote from: Doug on March 13, 2010, 07:50:15 AM

That is not the problem. File associations are messed up.Hello again.
I tried to follow the directions, but it says that there is something wrong with the folder. I double checked, and the exe.reg folder is SPELLED correctly, everything in it is written as it should be written. It just can't find it in the commandoprompt.

Solve : Running a program from BAT file make the dos window stuck and open?

Answer»

I am writing a batch file but I am stuck at a (hope) simple step; if I write into the batch file:

"c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe"
echo done!

and I double click it, IE opens well, but the line echo done!! is not executed ... the window remains stuck at the IEXPLORE line ...

Example ------ > http://i42.tinypic.com/2r5t5af.gif

How can I do to run a program and continue the execution ?

I tried >nul , start ... , but nothing worked.

Thanks for help.

[Saving space, attachment DELETED by admin]To help you understand the issue, try this more simple thing:

TEST.BAT
Code: [Select]START NOTEPAD.EXE
echo all done
pause
exit
That will not do what you might expect. The command line is not the way to start windows programs unless you wish to stay in the command line.
If you wish to start a Windows program from a script, you need to use another form of script other that batch. Maybe VBScript
But if you really want to, it can be done in BATCH. But it is very awkward.
I will let somebody else explain it.Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 18, 2010, 09:08:48 AM

The command line is not the way to start windows programs unless you wish to stay in the command line.

That's not really TRUE. In fact it's not true at all. You are mistaking your lack of knowledge for a Windows limitation.

Quote

It's not "very awkward". At least that's my opinion. You just have to study the documentation of the START command. You can see this by opening a command window and typing START /? and hitting the ENTER key.

You will probably want to use this command if you want to start Internet Explorer and immediately return to the batch file

Code: [Select]start "" "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
Unless you need special options (namely, waiting for the program to FINISH) , you can just start them without using "start". control returns to the batch file immediately, as it would in the case of start.

EDIT:

nevermind that... start appears to work differently wether it's run within a batch or at the prompt itself.First of all make sure you are running it with Admin rights....

Quote
@echo off
echo starting IE
cd "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\"
call iexplore.exe
echo all done
pause

The 'call' will wait until the program has finished/closed before executing the rest of the batch file. It is waiting for any parameters/changes first.
The pause will leave it open until the user presses a key, so you can view your 'all done' message or any exceptions that occured.

Rather than calling you can use 'start' to not wait and continue the batch file while it's running as well:
Quote
start iexplore.exe

Yeah, like that time I totally separated my user interface thread from my worker threads in order to create a consistent and responsive User Interface, I was so totally using techniques used for making viruses.

Solve : Ridiculous Vista Freezing?

Answer»

I just did a clean install of Vista Home Premium (which had this problem before, though not nearly as severely).
I have no clue what I'm running, since this was a gift. I know I'm SP2 64 bit, fully updated.

So, I'm going about my business, installing Zune software, when Vista freezes. This freeze means my computer stops doing things, but I can still move the mouse, and it even changes things as I hover over them with the mouse. But, should I click anything, it will freeze that too. ctrl+alt+delete does nothing, nor does any other command. I held the power button and forced a shutdown. (This has happened many, many, many times before, usually while doing an install, though not always)

I turn on the computer, and it asks what I want to boot in. I choose boot normally, and it asks if I want to do a disk check. I say no, since the time I did do a disk check did nothing. I get to the login, click on my username... And it freezes. The same way. Angrily, I restart. FOUR times. Each time I get caught at roughly the same area. (Once I managed to log in, but never get past the welcome screen.) I restart it again and let it run the disk check... Except, as soon as it says "Windows will now check your disk" it stops. And freezes. In a fit of rage I restart, and try again. Same thing. I boot up in safe mode. It works, but I'm really not sure what to do, so I restart. I get my install DISKS out, and try to go for a system restore. It says it can't restore the system until I do a disk check. So I let it schedule one, hoping that a normal restart might help things. It gets stuck again. I restart, and decide to give it one more try. It does the diskcheck. I cry happily for a few seconds, and then get back down to business. It recovers some orphaned files and fixes a few things, and begins booting. It comes to the login screen. It loaded with my username already clicked, so I cautiously type in my password, and hit enter. It freezes. I restart. Try again. It starts to log me in (welcome screen) and freezes.

I would really appreciate a few ideas to help here, and I'll try to find out what the laptop is running.

How is that possible if this computer came with the problem? Was it just a faulty harddrive?

Possibly. If it's still under warranty I'd invoke that warranty.Swear word.

I'm a bit desperate, so I gotta ask. Are there any other potential causes for this besides a faulty hard drive?HOLY BALLS.

Okay, I managed to do a system restore (god knows how).

I logged in.. I let it sit, and three minutes later, it LOGGED ON. So holy balls I'm excited.

Okay, okay. So does this mean the problem is not my HD? If so, could you tell me any other potential problems? To check the HDD dload the Free diagnostics from the drive manuf. site and follow the info on creating a bootable CD...

I choose boot normally, and it asks if I want to do a disk check. I say no, since the time I did do a disk check did nothing.
Then you are not using the repair switch. You need to run chkdsk /r (just running "chkdsk" serves absolutely no purpose). When properly run, checkdisk will ALWAYS report that it found and repaired one or more errors.Quote from: GalinKinlin on February 22, 2010, 08:51:50 PM

I would follow Allan's advice. Your hd may not be failing but rather have some corrupt system files. The easiest way to check it is by opening MY COMPUTER > RIGHT CLICK THE C:\ DRIVE > SELECT PROPERTIES > CLICK ON THE TOOLS TAB > CLICK CHECK NOW UNDER ERROR CHECKING > CLICK CONTINUE > CHECK BOTH BOXES THAT COME UP. Restart your pc and let it do the check disk. Quote from: drivenbywhat on February 23, 2010, 08:30:20 AM

Well, actually the easiest way is to go to START - RUN and type: chkdsk c: /r then press enter. You'll be asked if you want to run it on the next boot - say yes, then reboot. The "Run" command is not on the Vista (or 7) Start Menu by default. ALSO if User Account Control is on, then it has to be run from an elevated command prompt.

So in this case, Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> right-click "Command Prompt" -> left-click "Run as Administrator" -> beep -> click Accept -> type chkdsk c: /r

I forget about this a lot as well. my favourite way to get to an elevated command prompt is faster- just use the search bar-

Windows Key, type "CMD" press the Application key, and then press "a".

Just thought I'd mention that, since I start it that way a lot.

Solve : AVG Update Messed Up Computer?

Answer»

I have AVG Internet Security, and I've had it since October (after switching from KASPERSKY).
Recently, it did an update that required me to reboot. After rebooting, a black screen and the mouse POINTER shows up where the login screen usually comes up. The screen stays that way until I power off my computer (laptop, rather) by holding the power button. I've troubleshooted this 3 times since the most RECENT update; system restores and whatnot. But just today, my restore points are "magically" gone (auto-delete?). Anyways, I can only run Windows [7] in Safe Mode until the problem is fixed with AVG. Any recommended steps I should TAKE?

Also, I find it weird how the Fn+F10 and Fn+F11 (increase/decrease) keys work in Safe Mode, but not on normal boot... I have to use a third-party app to control my brightness... any tips?UNINSTALLED AVG from Safe Mode. System is working fine.

Solve : Reinstalling computer problem'?

Answer»

Hello, please help me. I have been trying for 4 hours with no success

After I boosted from my Vista 64 bit Home CD, I tried to format my disc( due to virus). INSTEAD HOWEVER, it restarted my PC.

The next TIME, I deleted the whole C drive and tried to install Vista,
But the installation process would not go past the "expanding files" part ( the part after copying files).

After a while being stuck at expanding files, the screen will go black and remain that way. I have to turn off the PC power supply and repop in my disc in order to restart properly.

I have tried formatting the C drive, even though it was blank.

Thank You.
- Dissevered

Edit:

It takes QUITE a while for the PC to get to the Enter PRODUCT key part. It dwells a long time before with the Mouse clicker and an entirely blue screen.

The PC sometimes goes black screen even before the Expanding files part, forcing me to restart. bump1) Boot to a boot time AV and scan the drive to eliminate any lingering viruses.
2) Then boot to your OS DVD and begin the install process. Delete any and all partitions, create the new partition(s), format, and install.

Solve : Bluetooth disappeared from my Windows 7??

Hi all. I'm not sure what has happened but I can't get any bluetooth devices to pair with my COMPUTER. It won't recognize anything. I have a Gateway DX4710 desktop and it came with bluetooth installed and it has worked in the past but I don't know what has happened to prevent it from working now. I tried searching for and installing a couple of different bluetooth drivers but no luck. I'm not so much concerned about how I lost it but rather what I can do to get it installed again. Thanks in advance.Re-install your MBoard CHIPSET drivers from the Driver CD that shipped with the machine...Do you mean the Restore DVD(s) that came with it? That's all I have.No.
The restore CD's will WIPE everything and take the machine back to Day One status...
All your data and apps will be gone.

Travel to the manuf. site to track down the proper drivers...My PC came with Vista but I've since upgraded to 7. When I search for drivers on the Gateway site using my PC's serial number it only gives drivers for Windows Vista 32 and 64 bit and for Windows XP. Will the Vista drivers be ok to try? I'm running 64 bit by the way.Try the Vista 64 bit drivers...
I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya ...Well I tried the Vista driver and I also downloaded and installed a bluetooth stack for Windows 7. Still can't get it to work. I have no idea what else needs to be done. I know it has worked before without any bluetooth usb adapters. Just not sure what happened to SCREW it up now. Solve : windows 7 not recognizing hard drive format?

Just purchased a new computer with windows 7 and having an issue.

Back Story......
Old computer wouldnt boot. It would go through the MB screen and it woudl like the matrix got it. Shorted the bios and everythign looked good but windows would not start. Tried to format the main drive 250gig a few times and it would ALWAYS stop. I wanted a faster COMP anyway so i ordered up a new computer

asus m4a78 board
phenom 2 X4 965
windows 64 bit
160gig drive

I put the 250 gig (had XP on it) and my 400gig (pics, vids and music) into the new computer. The computer IMMEDIATELY tells me there is a problem with teh 250gig which i expected but it does its thing and as far as i can tell everything is there (not expected). The 400 gig THOUGH it says it needs to format and does not recognize the file format. Really dont want to have to format this drive any help is appreciated. Doubled in size?

Did everything GO kind of blurry but larger?

Or all the text got bigger?

Or is it just all bigger, and the definition is still the same?

It sounds like the resolution has gone lower for whatever reason, try:

Right-click on Desktop > Personalise > Display Settings

Change the resolution (screen size) to the highest, apply it, and then wait and see. Either everything should go back to normal (in which case you will have to click OK and tell the PC that your resolution is fine). Or if it's too high a resolution the screen will go black for a bit and then go back to being large but visible, in which case you should try a lower screen size.Yes

When I right click it doesn't give me Personalize or display setting?

EDIT

I FOUND it. It is Ctrl + to make it bigger and Ctrl - to make it smaller.

Solve : Bluetooth Speaker Icon keeps vanishing?

Answer» HELLO from a newbie.

I have a Sony bluetooth speaker SRS-BT100. which worked fine with my Sony Laptop when I had Vista installed. I have recently upgraded to Windows 7, and now every time I want to use the speaker I have to remove it from Devices & Printers, and then reinstall it.

When I reinstall the speaker, it APPEARS in the Sound - Playback window, and at the same time the Bluetooth speaker window opens allowing me to click on connect, and link the speaker to the Laptop.

However when I have finished LISTENING , and close this Speaker Connection Window , the speaker icon vanishes from the Sound-Playback window. I then have to remove the speaker and reinstall it, next time I want to use it.

In Vista the speaker icon was permanently located in Sound - Playback, so I could set it as default or select it every time I wanted to use it.

How do I get the Speaker Icon to remain permanently in Sound Playback

Advice would be much appreciated, Thank you, Anthony
Further investigation makes me think my ignorance may have CONFUSED the issue.

It is now clear to me that if I break the bluetooth connection by either switching off the power to the speaker, or closing the Laptop , then there will be no automatic connection when I next try to play some music.

Also the speaker icon in " Sound .... Playback " will be missing, until I remove the speaker from" Devices & Printers " and then put it back using "Find a Device"

All will then work ok, until the next time I break the bluetooth connection between Laptop and Speaker/

Solve : Remove a second OS from computer setup and config?

Answer»

I am stuck in an interesting situation with my computer. About three months ago I made an upgrade on my system from Vista to Windows 7. At the time when I did it, I did not do an over the top install of Windows 7 on my hard drive that has Vista installed on it. I installed Windows 7 to another new hard drive in my system.

So when my system boots I have the ability to boot to either OS. I have Norton Ghost 15.0 on my system for doing backups. I want to now fully get rid of the Vista hard drive and reformat the drive. For some reason I cannot reformat the drive from within Windows. Another thing, when I try to specify the type of backup job I want Ghost to do for my main Windows 7 drive, it keeps telling me that I have to include a backup of the drive that has Vista installed on it, otherwise if I have to restore my Windows 7 drive it might not work correctly.

So how do I go about removing any attachment issues of Vista from my Windows 7 drive so that I can now delete and reformat the drive? Attached is a screen shot of my HDD setup just in case. Any ideas what I need to do to solve this?

[Saving space, attachment deleted by admin]What OS are you in when you try to FORMAT the vista drive? Tell me it's win7 because if you're trying to format the vista drive from vista itself then we have bigger problems to deal with, lol. The other issue here is the boot sector. It is located in your vista drive. Yes, I know it doesn't say "boot" in the picture next to the vista drive. Windows mixes up the term system with boot. If you were to achieve formatting the drive you will have issues booting into win7 because you would wipe the boot info that tells the pc which drive to boot from first which in turn tells it which drive has what OS. This is seen in the "active" word next to the vista drive. As far as ghost goes, it may be telling you the message to include vista for the reasons I've already stated or because vista is where you installed it.

So that you know the pitfalls of succeeding with formatting the drive here's the answer to your question. Search for "darik's boot and nuke". It's a program that wipes hard drives. This will wipe your vista drive and then you'll have to format it to get windows to see it again. Win7 should have a backup feature to backup the whole drive. I would use this to replace ghost before wiping vista. Then after you've wiped vista and have the problems of booting into the right drive, I would use the win7 disc to boot into the recovery tools and possibly use the "startup repair" tool to possibly fix the boot issue. Good luck.Quote from: drivenbywhat on March 10, 2010, 09:57:16 PM

Window style suggests it's Windows 7 to me, there's a slight difference in the size of the caption buttons.Yes I am in Windows 7 when doing everything I mentioned above. I will work on ideas presented above and then I will get back with the results of what happened. Hopefully I have no adverse issues and can manage this without having to re-ghost my drives after I make the changes. Thanks for the ideas.Vista is taking up space on your computer and you want to get rid of it. That's understandable, but in a few cases you might want to have theOS in your computer anyway.
Please allow me to share my practical experience. My computer is a multiboot computer and I have finally decided not to bother removing systems I don't use. Nowadays hard drives are cheap, at least the common IDE drives. I normally have two drives installed in my system and I believe the poor performance is a little bit better than when I had just one drive. My power supply has more than enough power to supply my hard drives and my GRAPHICS card. So I see no point in removing one of the drives. As for drive space, Windows Vista is a hog, but it can reduce down to about 10 GB. One of my drives is a 250 GB drive, so I did not bother to remove the stuff from the system.
My reasoning for this is because in times past I have tried to move my operating systems from one place to another and repair the system and it was just a big hassle and then I would have some doubt as to what about the system would be reliable after doing so many changes and mutations to it.

Now for the theoretical problem. It may be that many users don't understand that once you install an operating system in a certain configuration it can be very hard to change it. With regard to how the system boots up.

If you wish to have just Windows 7 as the operating system, you would need to do a repair of Windows 7 so that it will boot by itself and not depend on the other operating system to do this start up. As for myself, I have done that and I don't like it. I prefer to do a fresh install rather than try to do a repair. But in my case, it is my practice to have backups of everything and that makes it easier to do a clean install been rather than trying to repair a defective install.

Anyway, I just wanted to share that with you. Of course it really is possible just to repair the window seven installation and it is quite a learning experience and it may work out well for you. But just in case, be sure you have some kind of backup of any thing that is IMPORTANT to you.

Please EXCUSE spelling and grammar errors, a I have limited ability to proofread my own stuff. This is from speech dictation.
Another thing I just thought of is the following:

Do you have an external usb drive kit? You could remove the vista drive from your pc and put in the kit. Then attach the usb drive to the pc and you should be able to format it.

Also, to help you see the "boot error" I referred to you can do a simple test to see it. Unplug the vista drive from your pc. Turn the pc on and you should see the error that you will get when you format vista. Now turn your pc off and plug the drive back in. You should be able to boot again. In case you can't then use the vista/7 disc to boot to the recovery tools and use the startup repair tool.

So you've got a new motherboard, new PSU, and new CPU... basically you've bot a brand new computer and it's giving you the same problom?

Out of the things you've already tried, the only things left to try that I can think of are:

Have you tried a different cable for the monitor?

Are you sure the PSU has sufficient power (what the make/model of it?)?

How many ram modules do you have installed (have you tried removing one of the ram modules, you might have a bad ram MODULE) Try starting the computer with only one ram module at a time.Quote
The PC turns on but has no video signal

This is actually kind of vague, so, your problem could also be related to a bad windows installion, for all I know at this point.

Also:

You'll have to reinstall Windows if you replaced the motherboard. Absolutely necessary, if you want windows to boot.

Sometimes a repair install can do the trick too.I dropped my computer and now there is no video.

No video? Is your monitor turned on? Are you sure the PC is turning on? Can you give some DETAILS about what 'no video' means?

Also, I think the dog knocking the computer off the couch is a sign, and has two morals:
1. Your dog doesn't think you are using the PC a healthy amount.
2. Why did you leave it on the couch?

Solve : Laptop not booting?

Answer»

Hi, my laptop has the windows/system32/config/software so I knew i needed a install disc to repair my computer but I tried using the windows vista ULTIMATE from my main PC to repair the laptop which has windows vista HOME and all i got was a black screen with a flashing cursor. Does this mean I cant repair my laptop with ultimate(also I don't know if this means anything but on the back of windows vista ultimate case it says OEM software)? Any help appreciated! I would think Vista would include a backup partition you can recover from? Do you see any prompts at startup taht say something like "Press 'R' for recovery" or "Press F12 for help?" Have you tried using F8 to boot to safe mode? How far can you boot before it won't go any further?

Is your BIOS set to boot to CD first? If it is reading the disk, at the very least you would get a "Press Any key to boot from CD" instead of just a blinking cursor.Only things that pop up are press esc to CHANGE boot order and press f10 to enter setup. Also I did CHECK the bios and it is set to boot to cd first but I decided to check if any other cds would work so I put in my old windows XP recovery disc and sure enough it showed the "Press Any key to boot from CD"(but doesnt let me do anything else since this laptop is vista lol) so I guess my other disc MUST be faulty or something.

Solve : The Sims 2 Uninstall Problems....?

I need some help! I have a Windows Vista and I am not that familiar with it as I am with Macs...

I had The Sims 2 Deluxe Edition and The Sims 2 University installed on my computer for a while. Well the game screwed up and I decided to completely reinstall it. However, in a moment of stupidity, I "uninstalled" the game by DELETING the entire folder containing all the files for it to run and emptying the trash, without running the uninstall program. Now I am unable to install the game again, since the computer says it is still installed.

How can this situation be remedied so that the game is uninstalled and there is absolutely no trace of it EVER being on my computer, so that I can reinstall it?

Thank you!Quote

You said it!
If you have a good backup system already in place, yourcould go back to a time when the program was still working.
Without that option, you would have to rid the registry of references to the program. Not a simple task.

You can try some of the free or trial uninstaller programs that will work on Vista.

I can see why you would think so but in my experiences windows completely ignores the deleted content because it still removes the registration files. And therefor still does it job.

Solve : Can't boot computer?

Answer»

I can not BOOT my computer I can only access the setup (F2) and boot menu (F12). I have tried using a recovery disk, but nothing has worked. Please help. What do you mean it won't boot? WITHOUT PRESSING anything at the POST screen, what happens next?

After the POST completes, it will attempt to find a bootable device ATTACHED (hard drive, CD/DVD drive, floppy, USB). If it fails to find bootable media, it will generate an error message.

If it won't see the recovery media when you boot, you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS settings or PRESS F12 for the boot menu and select the device you want to boot from.

Solve : Computer running EXTREMLY slowly?

Answer»

Hi there,

as the subject says, my computer started RUNNING extremely slowly in normal mode (appears completely fine in safe mode with networking though) by extremely slowly I mean it takes about 2mins to close the screensaver, 5ish mins to open firefox and about a minute when you click on the start menu...and that is on a good day.

It was working fine and seems to have happened literally over night. I have run Spybot, Ccleaner, ESET, repaired from DOS and tried to do a defrag and apart from a virus that has since been deleted I can not for the life of me figure out what is wrong!

any help anyone can offer is really appreciated!Try disabling real-time protection for both ESET and Spybot. You could also uninstall Spybot and use a much better alternative to work with your current antivirus for free. http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free and http://www.superantispyware.com/ (Free edition).Did you recently make any hardware changes or updates to software? Typically when there is slowness, reversing any recent changes to the computer should do the trick (system restore?)

If not, and it is just slow for no reason, I would suggest backing up files and doing a clean install of the OS. Normally when something is causing your device to slow down, it is never just one thing, but multiple things. Sometimes they can be tricky, and not all virus scans can DETECT all things. For peace of mind, and an effective solution, I would do just that.Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the OFFENDING process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.
Hey guys,

thanks for all of your replies, unfortunately none of them have worked so far...I have not reinstalled the OS as I have a number of things on my computer which would require me to re download them and where I am currently at I only have 10GB internet allowance p/m (should be fixed soon, but not for a month or so.) for the same reason I have not done a system restore.

I have stopped all the startup items and it did nothing. I don't believe that ESET or spybot are the problem as ESET was installed after the problem happened and I have had Spybot on the computer for as long as I can remember. This problem seems to have happened in the space of an hour or so. The computer was on and working completely fine one minute, and then about 3ish hours later it crashed as I was playing wow and has not worked since.

I do not understand this statement. If you have 'things on your computer' you can back them up without internet connection. (personally, i would not recommend a System Restore as the first thing to do, never mind a clean install. That is a bit overkill so far, so forget them for a bit)

You disabled ALL the startup items. Did you follow Allan instructions to the letter ?

In your first post you say 'tried to de-frag', what actually happened

Also, more information would be helpful. What OS are you using. How much RAM ? What size is the hard drive and how much space is on it ? What other programs do you have running?Quote

The 'msconfig' tells you how many programs you have running. If you'd done what Allan said, you'd know !he actually told me to only start re-enabling the programs if disabling them fixed the problem

as stated above I have done what Allan has asked me to do, there were 25 different programs that start up at when I turn my computer on, however I turn alot of them off if I am planning on having my computer on for extended amounts of times, thus I stand by not being 100% sure as to which of these was running at the time the problem occurred, if you think it will help I am happy to type them out for you here, however they are all fairly standard programs

OK, what are your specs ?? As 25 programs running consecutively seems excessive.

Does the problem still occur in Safe mode ??

In your initial post your said you 'repaired from DOS', what did you do ??were you after specs other then the ones that I have already listed? if so which ones?

runs completly fine in all the safe modes and the repair in DOS was the option that comes up when your computer doesnt start correctly and it is the first of the options that you are given when you get to the 'open in safe mode' screen ...... I am not sure what it doesRun a software to post your hardware temperature. Have you done house cleaning lately? The reason I suggested removing spybot as a troubleshooter is or other protection software is some features enabled that tends to make the system slow. Documents is where your word processing, SPREADSHEET, and other files are saved by default. Pictures and Music are other special folders. NONE of these special folders have folders inside them until create and add folders, which can be called sub-folders, to them.

Solve : admin help?

Answer»

I have win 7. and I have two accounts setup on it.

One account is a Limited account and I have an account and it had ADMIN.

But what is the diferance between the hidden ADMIN account and my account that I gave ADMIN.

I THOUGHT an Administrator account is the same as an account you made Admin??in Vista/7, when you are a standard user (by which I mean any user-created account) Windows strips your Security token of all administrator privileges when you log on. If you run as the actual "Administrator" account, it doesn't. UAC elevates you by rebuilding your Security Token with the proper administrator privileges and running the software by running it under that Security Token. That means that running a application "as Administrator" is really just running it as your own account with admin privileges, if your account has been given those privileges. Otherwise, the UAC prompt will appear and request PASSWORD authentication for the ELEVATION process.Well I have an Account I made for myself and in the Account type you can pick Limited or Administrator.

I picked Administrator.

This is not the same as the Administrator account that is Hidden in the computer?

This is what I ment soory?Quote from: NYMPH4 on November 18, 2011, 10:05:52 PM

I tend to think that the motherboard is toast. Maybe it overheated. If the motherboard was able to start up properly it would at least be able to see and attempt to boot the hard drive (and if it were the hard drive that was DEFECTIVE, you would get a message like "DISK BOOT FAILURE: INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER" or "No boot device available - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility").Thanks for the reply Doug! I was kinda thinking in that direction............ She has an ACER disk, but the bios will not see the DVD dr either..........Funny but the Bios shows both in hardware I'm sure the Southbridge is toast............ I have an AsRock K10 that will run all her Hardware & CPU.............. Thanks for the Heads UP!

Solve : HDD Partition to Fat32 - Erases Everything or only Partition Data??

Answer»

Sorry to post so frequently on so MANY issues, but I sadly have the occasion to do a lot of computer-related maintenance with my systems as of late...

Anyway, what I plan to do is this: I have an external HDD (a desktop HDD in an enclosure) that I have cleared out enough room for about a 50 gig partition. I want to give this a partition in order that I might copy all my files from my PS3 onto the Fat32 partition I will create (it is required to be Fat32). I have two concerns, though:

1. Will making a new partition in a new file system cause any loss of data on the areas not so partitioned? That is, obviously the partition area itself will be reformatted, but will the -rest- of the disk be reformatted, too? Or am I safe to go ahead?

2. Can I partition an external HDD?

I run Vista on the computer which the HDD will be connected to.Always back up your data before doing any partition editing/formatting.

You can create a new partition in the unpartitioned space and the other partitions will not be effected by it. The data on the other partitions will be the same. You can FORMAT just the one partition leaving the others unaffected.

Quote
2. Can I partition an external HDD?

Yes.

Usually external hard DRIVES are just one big partition. Does yours have unpartitioned space or do you plan on SHRINKING the existing volume in order to make room for your new partition?

Also, what software are you planning on using to perform these operations? Windows Disk Management?Quote from: JJ 3000 on November 17, 2011, 04:01:39 AM

There are two partitions on the external HD (it used to be a desktop HDD): The main partition and the recovery partition for it's XP installation prior to being turned into an enclosed HD.

I have space I cleared in order to make a partition in that space.

Yes, WIndows Disk Management due to Norton's Partition Magic being discontinued.

Solve : Windows 7 - No sound?

Answer»

As I 'play' news videos or Youtube videos, no sound is coming out. It is an intermittent problem that comes and goes.
Speakers are working fine.
Thank you in advance for your help! Since I'm a newbie, simple language in instructions appreciated. My sincere thanks! This isn't BAD. it is either your speakers or your sound DEVICE. If it is your speakers, TRYING a new pair should resolve the issue (they're CHEAP these days, around 20 bucks for a simple set). If the problem continues, if you have a front heatphone jack, that should work, if you don't have a headphone jack elsewhere on the device, buying a simple sound card (again, cheap) for a PCI slot - it should come with a installation disc and you can put the new drivers on for the new hardware and that will take care of the issue. What browser do you often use when the problem occurs? Did you try checking on another browser?

Solve : Four-Picture Icon View in Windows 7??

Answer»

I recently purchased a laptop with Windows 7 pre-installed. Due to changes in the interface, I can't seem to figure out how to make the Windows-XP-esque four-picture icon view for some photo albums. Is there anyway to do this?

I do not mean the icon view that looks like an open folder with certain files stuffed into it. But the folder imposed with four pictures from inside the folder. Is there a way to get that view in Windows 7?

SORRY for such an ELEMENTARY question, but I'm not used to Windows 7 and I wasn't able to find information about it in an internet search made earlier.

Thank you kindly.I think on Win 7 that certain thumbnail view/preview feature is removed. Instead you could customize by right-clicking folder, Properties - Customize tab - Folder Pictures then choose a file or image WITHIN the folder. Quote from: jason2074 on November 15, 2011, 01:13:46 AM

Solve : ATT41DF Stuff?

Hi guys!

I got a stiff one for yer here lads (LOL)

Like a lot of you I guess, I get a fair amout of 'Fun Stuff' mail sent by my freinds. Most of it is OK, but some come to me in an attached foulder labeled 'ATT41DF'.
I am given the choice of opening the folder or saving it. If I open the document, I only get a load of 'gobbly' writing! I can pick out the written content if I look hard enough, but any pictures that are supposed to be there are just in writing and lost to me!

Any of you guys know the answer to this problem please? ATT means its an attachment... and ATT41DF is just the name of the file(s) that your friends sent you.

Do you MEAN an attached zip file? You can't send folders over the internet without first putting them into an archive...
Have you tried opening the file with various common programs, i.e. Adobe Reader, Word, etc. You are probably opening the file in Notepad, which CAUSES a bunch of gibberish to show up.Yes, but what I want to know is how to be able to read it properly bud? I only get a lot of writing when I open it, what is the correct format to be able to se it properly is what I mean my freind Try opening the file with various common programs-somehow the file lost its file extension before or after your friend MAILED it to you. You should ask your friend with what program he managed to open or create the file with.Yes I have solved this problem guys! As you say, you have to find out which program reads the file properly. I found out that 'word' does read the doc fine. The different choice of opening documents in Windows is great.

So if anyone has this problem with this particular format Microsoft Word is the answer guys!

MANY thanx again fellas1
